board weirdness

Hey everyone,

I've been reading about the trouble you've been having. The problem is, I can't make *any* machine I own/have access to do that. I was having a problem going into the main fic board and having to refresh, but not the other problems everyone else had.

Is this still going on? Can someone that's having these problems post what kind of computer/internet connection/web brower&version they have so that I can try to recreate it?

I'm really at a loss here...

the good news is, i have to restart the server A LOT less. which is a good thing. and i haven't seen a "too many connections" error in almost 24 hours. woo!

ok. so, i have no idea why the board was acting weird, but it's behaving a lot better for me now.

i modified some of the code, cleared my cache, closed down my web browser, opening it back up, and my problems are gone.

i'd suggest anyone having problems like taffycat clear their cache (post if you don't know how) and reload the page. see if that helps.

Hey Heidi,

Thanx for thread , I've been up all night with MAJOR problems which have gotten worse (you probably won't even get this) I can't post and when I do it disappears.
I can't view any upto date FB on my fics:

Back 2 U
Crossing time 4 U
Without You

I edit and it goes, only not to have changed .I've got threads every where and they mix between opening pages of days
23 /24/ 25 oct, every time having to go to 'last days' thread. Its just getting worse and I'm at a loss....PLEASE
advise or steer me in the right direction to solving this.
Can I repost (don't even know how to do that, ditzy or what)old parts, trying to post new ones and delting old threads? Can I/you reboot anything that might help in any way. Can you take look for me when you have the time?
PLEASE HELP..I'm totally at a loss here.
Forever gratefully for any help?advice that you can give me.
BTW Probably being ditzy here but what does cache mean?

hehe

you're welcome.

yeah, see, here's the explaination. when you go to a website, your computer oh-so-helpfully stores a copy of it on your hard drive. it keeps a "cache" of these pages, so that should you go to that page a lot, it should theoretically be faster to display that page that's on your hard drive instead of downloading a new one. But. Sites like these that are dynamic and change all the time can't really be cached because you need to be able to see all the changes all the time. but your computer can't tell the difference between a plain site and a dynamic site, so it always uses the cached page when it can.

so. i fooled it into never making a cached page. so now it will always HAVE to download the newest page from the site. hence, no more crazy-making problems

the short version of that... i made it so that your computer can't be so damn helpful. heh.

Ok, that seems to have worked but why do I get a white background when I hit refresh? That was another problem I was having and still am. Anything you can do to fix that?

First of all I'd like to thanks you all for the enormous work you invest into providing this community with a home!!!{grin]

THANKS VERY MUCH !!!
We all can't appreciate it enough!!!

I also have this strange white background problem since a few days! I don't know what causes it, but every time I refresh a page the browser sems to have real problem with the code. The background is all white and the table formats are lost, and the page starts with the alt text "search the forums..." of the search image on top of the page. the strange thing however is that when i save the page's code an load it locally everthing seems ok.

I knwo that's weird and usually I'd say that a local computer problem, but since some other people seem to have the same problem...

My config: Win98se, ie60 (i had it before things got strange)

Thanks in advance for all of your effords

Ok, I still get the white background problem, had it since last night. And also I have to constantly cleanout my cache in order to see new posts or edits that I have done to my own posts. There is something not right here. I have never had to do this before.

I also wanted to say thank you for all of your hard work!

Maybe you could try inserting a

meta http-equiv="expires" content="0"

tag into the header of each template.

This should force the browser to reload the page from the server whenever accessing it. This gives the page an expirytime of 0 seconds in the cache and makes it useless for the browser.

Maybe that could help!

i've got both a nocache and a meta expires (only mine make it looks like the page expired monday). i'll try re-working the meta experies tag and see what happens.

this just started happening 2 days ago when i took down the firewall. hrm.
