Title: Forever Your Love (by Lindsay)
Rating: ADULT
Category: AU M/L
Disclaimer: I own nada!
Summary: Max and Liz met when they were younger and were then torn apart. So what happens when they meet again years down the road?

Author's Note: Okay folks, Forever Your Love is next on my long list of fics to be completed. Considering it's the second one I ever posted, I'd say it's beyond time to get back to it, eh? Well, I will be reposting the existing parts over the next few weeks, to get us back in the groove and also to allow new readers to become familiar with the story. As I look back, I'm finding many things I want to revise, so even if you have read this before, take a minute to read it again. With that said, I hope you'll join me on this romantic adventure of youthful love restored...

<center>Prologue: Summer of ‘97</center>

“I’ll never forget you, Lizzie! How could I? You’re my bestest friend in the whole world!”

Liz Parker smiled brightly, even though her ten year-old heart was breaking. “You’re my bestest friend, too, Max. I’m going to miss you so much!”

Max Evans frowned as he saw her lower lip quiver and her big brown eyes tear up. “Oh… please don’t cry, Lizzie. I’m going to miss you, too!”

Liz nodded her understanding, trying hard to be brave like Max had said she would need to be.

It was the last night of the summer session at Camp Canyon Creek, one of the most prestigious kids camps in the nation, and Max still couldn’t believe how much of a blast he’d ended up having, especially since he hadn’t wanted to come in the first place.

However, his twin sister Isabel had wanted to come, and since she pretty much got everything she wanted, his parent’s had signed her up for the session. Then they had decided that it would be fun for Max to go along, and he had reluctantly agreed, only after being persuaded by Isabel, who always got what she wanted.

A faint smile crossed his lips as he remembered his first day at the camp…

“Come on, Max! Let’s go find out which cabin we’re in!” Isabel squealed, practically dragging her brother by the arm.

“Ow, slow down Izzy! You’re gonna tear my arm off!”

Isabel turned and pouted her lips. “Don’t be such a poop, Max! This is supposed to be fun! Maybe if you got out more instead of playing Ninja in the backyard with Michael all the time…”

“And what exactly is wrong with Ninjas?” Max asked, annoyed.

Isabel rolled her pretty brown eyes. “Puh-lease! You think tying black t-shirts around your face and hanging from tree limbs is cool?”

Max’s face flushed. “Oh, and I suppose I should be playing Barbie-prom-fashion show with you?”

Isabel stuck out her tongue in retort.

Just then, Max caught sight of a dark-haired girl sitting by herself next to a huge suitcase. He couldn’t tell from where he was standing, but he thought she might be crying.

He didn’t know why, but he felt drawn to the petite girl, and felt himself walking over to her.

“Are you okay?”

Liz looked up when she heard a soft voice speak to her and found herself staring into a pair of warm amber eyes.

Max sucked in his breath as the girl lifted her head and he caught sight of her tear-stained face. Her eyes were a deep chocolate, like the soft tresses that spilled over her shoulders.

Liz wiped a hand across her eyes and sniffled. “I… I guess so. This is my first time away from home,” she explained in response to Max’s question.

Max nodded and tentatively took a seat next to her. “Me too. This wasn’t my idea, my sister wanted to come so I got stuck coming, too.”

Liz gave a small smile, and Max felt his heart leap. She was certainly very pretty…

“My name is Liz,” the girl said shyly, pushing a few strands of hair behind her ear.

“It’s nice to meet you Liz. I'm Max,” Max smiled back, reaching his hand out to her.

Liz smiled broadly. “It’s nice to meet you, too…”

Max sighed as he remembered the day he met this special person. Liz was like no one else he had ever known. Even though she was a girl, she still liked to play with the boys and had proven she was quite good at it, too.

He grinned, remembering the way Liz had stuck up for herself when being teased about playing football during recreation time. She had ended up playing better than some of the guys.

“Max, will you write me?” Liz asked hopefully, her sweet voice breaking Max out of his daze.

“Of course I will, Lizzie. How could I forget my girl?” Max said, without thinking about how that sounded.

Liz’s eyes shone at the comment. “I’m… your girl?” she asked in awe.

Max gulped as he looked down at her pretty face. “Um… I mean… well… yeah. I guess. I mean, if you want to be…?”

Liz gave him another heart-stopping smile and nodded. “Yeah! I wanna be your girl!”

Max smiled back, shoving his hands in his jeans pockets. “So… if you’re my girl, then that would mean we have to, like, make it official.”

Liz frowned. “What, like shake hands or somethin’?”

Max shook his head. “Nah, in movies when a guy and a girl make it official, they usually… kiss…”

He glanced at Liz carefully from under his lashes, trying to determine her reaction to his words. To his relief and delight, her smile brightened.

“Okay… so what? We have to kiss?”

“Yeah… I mean, if that’s okay with you.”

“Sure, after all, I’m your girl and everything,” Liz said innocently.

They stood there staring at each other. Max coughed and Liz nervously tucked her hair behind her ear.

“So…” Liz began.

“So…” Max answered.

They leaned forward and closed their eyes as their tiny lips met in the sweetest of tiny kisses.

A second later, a noise broke them apart.

“Ewww!!!!! They’re kissing! Max and Liz sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!!!”

Max scowled at the figure. “Aw, shut up, Craig!”

Craig Miller laughed. “Man, that was gross! Why you kissing Parker, Max?”

“Knock it off, Craig!” Liz frowned. “Leave us alone!”

“Yeah, well, you two lovebirds had better get back to the cabins or else you’re gonna miss curfew!” Craig sang as he bounded away.

Max turned back to Liz, meeting her eyes shyly. “Sorry about Craig… he’s a real jerk sometimes.”

Liz nodded, smiling at Max. “S’okay.”

They stood there for another minute, each of them a little nervous. Finally Max broke the silence.

“Well, I guess we’d better go…”

“Yeah,” Liz said sadly. She wished she didn’t have to leave tomorrow. She wanted to stay with Max forever. But their camp session was ending and all the parents would be there tomorrow to take the kids back to their respective homes.

Max’s expression echoed Liz’s sentiments. He was surprised that he actually felt himself wanting to stay at the camp, when he had not wanted to come in the first place.

Silently, he took Liz’s tiny hand in his and walked her back to her cabin. As they stood on the porch, he gently pushed her hair behind her ear.

“You had a, uh…”

“Hair thing?” Liz replied breathlessly.

Max nodded. Then he kissed her lightly on the cheek and smiled before turning to head to his own cabin.

Liz watched as he left, her hand touching the spot where his lips had touched her. She sighed, turning and walking into the cabin.

Somehow, she knew she would never forget this night.

<center>Chapter 1: Present Day, 2004</center>

Liz Parker stared out the window of her parents’ car, lost in thought as she watched the sunny California landscape flash by.

She thought of her old room, her old house. She thought of her friends that she had spent seventeen years of her life with.

She was leaving it all behind to start a new life in some small town out in the middle of the desert.

When her parents had come to tell her the news that Liz’s grandmother had passed away from a stroke, she had been saddened over the knowledge but since she had never really known her grandmother, she couldn’t be as upset as she supposed she should have been.

That’s when they had lowered the boom on her.

Apparently, Liz’s grandma had owned a small café/apartment in her town of Roswell, New Mexico. And upon her death, she had left it to her son Jeff Parker and his family.

Jeff explained to Liz that in order to receive the benefits that came with owning the café, they would have to live close enough to control what was going on.

Thus, the move from her comfortable home in Calabasa to some desert town where they worshipped aliens.

Although Liz was a little upset at her parents for deciding to uproot her in the middle of her junior year in high school, she couldn’t help but feel a tiny glimmer of hope.

He lived in New Mexico.

Liz sighed and leaned her forehead against the cool glass, her eyes closing as memories of the past filled her mind. She could still feel the touch of his lips against hers all those years ago…

After returning to California from camp that summer, Liz and Max had begun to write each other frequently. Liz’s parents had assumed it was a harmless penpalship, however, Liz considered it more of a long-term relationship.

But as the months went on, Max’s letters came less frequently and were shorter in length. Liz began to wonder if he was forgetting about her.

The next summer, Liz begged her parents to let her go back to Camp Canyon Creek on the slim chance that Max might be there.

But her parents couldn’t afford the cost, so she had ended up staying in California, pining away while thinking of Max.

After that, the letters had stopped coming and Liz knew that the inevitable had finally happened.

He had forgotten her.

She couldn’t necessarily blame him – he was growing into a teenage boy and had a life of his own.

One that she wasn’t a part of.

And the thought hurt her more than she cared to let on.

So she decided to put the thought of Max Evans behind her and focus on her own blossoming adulthood. And she succeeded in forgetting about her old childhood sweetheart... for awhile.

But when her parents had announced their sudden decision move to Roswell, the first thought in Liz’s mind was of a dark-haired, golden-eyed boy she’d met seven years ago.

She knew he lived out there somewhere, and the idea that she could possibly find him again was … exhilarating.

“Liz, are you okay back there?”

Liz snapped out of her daze when she heard her mother call her name. “What? Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Only a few more hours,” Liz’s father announced happily, and Liz mustered up a smile before turning to look out the window again.

She was leaving her normal, and she hoped that no matter whatever… whoever was out there waiting for her, that she would be ready.

<center>***********************************</center>

Max Evans walked down the hallway of West Roswell High school with the ease of a man who knew he was on top.

He was greeted by everyone he saw and his face began to hurt from smiling so much. It was what was to be expected from the big-man-on-campus. And Max was definitely that.

As a freshman he had won a spot on the varsity football, wrestling, and basketball teams, often leading said teams to victory. As a sophomore, he had already been named to the New Mexico All-American football team – a feat that was not easy to accomplish. And he had started out his junior year with a bang as well – winning the coveted spot of first-string quarterback.

Okay, so he was good at sports. No biggie. That wasn’t all that made him number one in the eyes of the students.

No, the fact that Max Evans was a super-jock only added to his already extroidinary appeal.

Ask any female that attended West Roswell and she could give you a list of Max’s attributes.

Short dark hair that curled at the nape of his neck, rich olive skin, strong defining muscles, full lips that put a woman to shame, and his eyes…

Warm amber with flecks of gold.

The female body positively drooled at the mere mention of Max Evans. And the fact that he was open and friendly made him even more attractive.

Of course, no female dared say this out loud for fear of the Wicked Bitch of the SouthWest, otherwise known as Tess Harding.

Tess was one of the most popular girls at school – blonde curly hair, bright blue eyes, and a body to kill for. She was co-head of the cheerleading squad along with Max’s sister Isabel, and had been dating Max since the end of their sophomore year.

To say she was possessive would have been the understatement of the century. She had a known reputation of ruining the lives of any girl who so much as smiled at Max, and felt no shame in using underhanded tactics to do it.

Just last semester she had caught Max talking after class with Shelley Powell, a cute junior who Tess knew from the swim team. Even though it had turned out that she was Max’s lab partner and he was tutoring her for a biology test, Tess had gone berserk and spread a rumor that Shelley was taking stereoids to help with her swimming.

In the end, Shelley ended up moving to another state, her swimming career over.

Max wasn’t even sure why he put up with Tess anymore. It certainly wasn’t because he wanted to be with her. No, it was more like it was expected.

As he walked by a set of lockers, he smiled at Debbie Mosely, a girl from his English class. She gulped, looking around for any signs of the witch before smiling back.

He headed toward his locker and expertly spun the dial, opening the metal door and reaching inside for his needed materials. A hand clapped down on his back and Max knew who it was before he turned around.

“Hey, Mike. What’s up?” he asked from inside his locker. He frowned as he sifted through the notebooks in search of his Trig book.

“How many times have I told you not to call me Mike, Maxwell?” Michael smirked, adding emphasis on the last word.

“Yeah, well how many times have I told you not to leave your dirty gym stuff in my locker?” Max asked, scowling as he held up a pair of old socks.

Michael scratched his head and feigned innocence. “Gee… how did those get in there?”

Max raised an eyebrow, obviously not buying it. “I swear, Michael. My locker is not your room. Don’t throw your shit in there and expect to find it again.”

Deciding a subject change was needed, Michael asked, “So… what are your plans for the weekend?”

Max sighed, retrieving his books and securing them in his bookbag before shutting his locker and turning to face his best friend. “I don’t know. After the game Friday, there’s that dance… “

Michael scrunched his nose in disgust. “You’re not taking the Wicked Bitch are you?”

Max hid the smile on his face, then frowned at the fact that Michael’s statement didn’t bother him. It should, shouldn’t it? After all, he had insulted his girlfriend.

Michael took Max’s silence as a confirmation. “I don’t know what you see in her, man.”

Max sighed and muttered under his breath, “Me either.”

As if on cue, Tess and her band of rodents, as Michael liked to refer to them as, walked down the hallway, their noses up in the air and glaring at anyone who got in their way.

“Let’s get out of here… I’m not in the mood for this right now,” Max said, grabbing Michael’s arm and making an attempt to escape before Tess saw him.

No such luck.

“MAX!!!” a high-pitched voice called out and Max stopped dead in his tracks, plastering a smile on his handsome face before turning around.

“There you are! I’ve been looking all over for you,” Tess purred, sidling up to him and linking her arm through his.

“Hey, Tess. What’s up?” Max asked, trying to ignore the disgusted look on Michael’s face.

“What, no good morning kiss?” Tess pouted, and Michael made a gagging noise behind her.

Tess turned around and glared at him as Michael put his hands in his pockets and stared at the ceiling, whistling innocently.

Tess rolled her eyes and turned back to Max. “Anyway… where were we?” she asked, leaning in to kiss Max when the bell rang overhead.

Saved by the bell, Max thought in relief. He pulled away from Tess’s grip and backed away. “Well… can’t be late. I’ll see you later, Tess.”

He grabbed Michael’s arm and headed towards their classroom, leaving Tess behind.

As they entered the classroom, Michael folded his arms and gave Max a look, demanding an explanation.

Max caught the look and sighed, sinking into his chair. “What?” he asked, knowing full well what Michael wanted to know.

“What’s going on with you and Tess? Trouble in paradise?” he joked.

Max gave him a look. “What paradise?” he mumbled.

Michael sighed and took his seat next to Max. “Max, you obviously have no feelings for the girl. Why even bother to pretend?”

Max thought about his words before finally answering. “I guess it’s easier to be with her than not to be. I mean, this is better than before…”

He trailed off, both boys knowing what he was referring to.

Before Max had finally agreed to go out with Tess, she had pursued him relentlessly, showing up in all his classes, his practices, and even at his home. After repeatedly telling her no, Max finally gave up and agreed to go out on a date with her.

“Yeah, well you shouldn’t stay with her just because she may stalk you if you don’t,” Michael replied. Max gave a small smile at his words. Michael had never cared much for Tess, and he had no problem letting everyone know that.

“Yeah, you’re right. I guess I’m just waiting for the right time to break it off with her,” Max answered.

“Well, you better hurry up because for all you know, Miss Perfect is out there waiting but unable to find you because some blonde bimbo, who shall remain nameless, has got her hooks, I mean claws, in you.”

Miss Perfect.

Max’s mind suddenly conjured up the image of a dark haired, doe eyed girl from long ago.

He didn’t know why he was so surprised. He thought about her all the time, but managed to keep it hidden far beneath his football and school and family life.

He hadn’t heard from her in over seven years.

After that one glorious summer, they had started writing each other, but as the weeks went on, Max began doing other things like playing peewee football and hanging out with new friends and hadn’t had as much time to write.

The next summer he had been very excited to return to Camp Canyon Creek, hoping to reconcile with Liz and refresh his memory of her. He had missed her terribly and couldn’t wait to see how much, if any, she had changed.

But she had never shown up. And after feeling his heart break into a million pieces, he realized that Liz had finally forgotten him.

He moved on with his life, but still thought about her off and on whenever he would see a girl with long chocolate hair come running down the street, or when he would catch a whiff of jasmine in the local flower shop.

No, Max Evans had definitely not forgotten about Liz Parker. Which is why he couldn’t understand why he was surprised when her image came to his mind after hearing Michael speak of the perfect girl.

It had been so long ago… but in his mind she still was. Perfect.

He sighed and looked out the window, wondering where she was and what she was doing and if he would ever lay eyes on Elizabeth Parker again.

<center>Chapter 2</center>

Beep, beep, beep!

A hand snaked out from under a set of blankets and hit the snooze button on the incessant alarm clock.

“Just a few more minutes…” Liz mumbled sleepily, as she pulled a pillow over her face to block the early morning sun rays from her tired eyes.

“Lizzie! Are you awake yet?”

Liz groaned at the sound of her mother’s perky voice. How did that woman manage to be so damn happy at seven in the morning??

No!” she shouted in response, burying herself deeper beneath the safety of the covers.

“Come on, honey! We have a lot to do today… besides, you’re going to miss breakfast! I made your favorite - chocolate chip pancakes!!” Nancy sang from below.

An eye popped open. Pancakes? Hmm… she was feeling a little hungry. Maybe she could eat and still manage to sneak back and catch a few winks before doing whatever her mother had planned for the day.

Be right down!” she yelled, sitting upright in bed as the smell of bacon and eggs wafted into her room. She took a deep sniff and sighed dramatically. For a person who wasn’t a morning person, she sure loved breakfast.

She threw her legs over the bed, yawning as she stretched her delicate arms over her head. She blinked furiously as the light filled her vision, and looked around her new room.

There were several boxes scattered all over the floor, and pieces of furniture placed in weird locations. She would definitely have to take care of that later, she thought as she saw a chair perched on top of her dresser.

She stood and walked into her bathroom, one of the many perks this room had to offer. She remembered how pleasantly surprised she had been the night before when she saw her new living arrangements.

Although living above a restaurant wasn’t exactly the dream she may have chosen for herself, the apartment was actually pretty nice. Her room was a lot larger than her old one in California, and she had her own bathroom and a huge balcony just outside her window.

That was her favorite part.

She could already imagine sitting out there in a lawn chair, reading or stargazing… she could put Christmas lights up… the possibilities were endless.

Liz!

Quickly she grabbed her robe and slid it on before running her fingers through her long hair and headed for the downstairs kitchen.

<center>*****************************</center>

“Well, I’m off to practice. See you guys later!” Max called as he grabbed a bagel and his car keys.

“Wait, honey… Isn't today a school holiday? I didn’t know you had football practice?” Diane Evans said as her son ran through the kitchen.

“Basketball,” Max corrected her, his mouth full of bagel. “It’s only till noon.”

“You’re still going to take me to the mall, aren’t you?” Isabel asked as she entered the kitchen clad in a pair of silk pajamas.

Max sighed, not looking forward to a spending all afternoon with his sister at the mall while she searched for “the perfect dress” for the dance that weekend.

“Why do I have to take you? Can’t you catch a ride with Tess or Stacey or someone?” he whined, giving his sister a pleading look.

Isabel scrunched her nose. “Ick! I can hardly stand being around Tess during cheer practice… much less spend any actual time with her away from school. I don’t know how you do it, Max.”

Max gave her a look and Isabel smirked.

“Why don’t I just meet you at the Crashdown for lunch and you can have the Jeep?” he offered.

“But how will you get home?” Isabel asked curiously.

“I’ll tell Michael to meet me there or something. Don’t worry… just please don’t make me sit through another one of your fashion shows.”

“Ha ha, very funny. I suppose you and Michael are planning on wearing your football jersies to the dance?” she asked sarcastically.

Max gave her a grin before stepping out of the door. “Nah… we thought our wrestling uniforms would be more appropriate.”

Isabel rolled her eyes.

<center>**************************</center>

Liz stared in disgust at the green uniform in her hand, complete with silver antenna.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” she said, giving her father a look. “Dad, these uniforms are ridiculous! What was grandma Claudia thinking??”

Mr. Parker chuckled. “Well, she did always have a thing for William Shatner…”

Liz rolled her eyes, giving the uniform another once-over.

It was aqua with a silver collar and an extremely short skirt. A tiny alien head was stitched right above her left breast.

“Oh wait, that’s not all,” Mr. Parker announced as he handed her a silver apron, complete with a huge alien head.

Liz groaned. “Dad, do I really have to wear this?”

She couldn’t believe it!

At first glance, she had thought the CrashDown café held a bit of appeal – strange appeal, but appeal nonetheless.

From the flying saucer-shaped booths to the menu filled with intergalactic food choices, Liz had cracked a smile at the alien obsession that surrounded this town.

But she had to draw a line somewhere, and it was at the idea of wearing these retro Star-Trek uniforms.

“Liz, I think it’s important that the whole family be involved in this project, don’t you?” Jeff Parker asked seriously.

Liz wrinkled her nose. “Then how come you don’t have to wear the goofy outfit?" she asked.

Looking from her father’s pleading expression back to the offending uniform, Liz sighed. “Okay… I’ll do it. But you owe me big time.”

Jeff just laughed and hugged his daughter closer. “That’s the spirit, Lizzie! I know you’re going to be the best waitress here!”

I sure hope so, Liz thought. She could already tell that this place was a popular hangout for the teens as well as the adults.

Glancing at the kids scattered around the small café, Liz only hoped she didn’t do something incredibly stupid and embarrass herself.

Just then, a pixie-ish blonde dressed in the alien uniform came bustling through the doors while straightening her silver antenna, her pretty face flushed.

“I’m so sorry I’m late. You must be Mr. Parker,” she said, looking slightly embarrassed as she approached the counter.

“Yes, and you must be Maria DeLuca. I was told you’d be coming in. Don’t worry about the time, I remember what it’s like to be a busy teenager.”

Maria smiled thankfully. “Thank you, sir. It won’t happen again.”

Mr. Parker smiled and nodded towards Liz. “This is my daughter Liz. She’s going to be a waitress and I was hoping you could show her the ropes.”

Maria glanced from the tall man to the petite brunette standing next to him. She was very pretty and something about her made Maria instantly like her.

“Sure! I’d be glad to!” she said eagerly, giving the brunette a smile.

Liz smiled tentatively in return. The blonde seemed nice enough… but she also carried herself in such a way that Liz knew she was somebody important.

Probably a cheerleader or something, she thought offhandedly.

“Well, I’ll leave you two to get acquainted and I’m going to go do some inventory,” Jeff announced, smiling at the two girls once more before turning and leaving.

“So, Liz, how do you like Roswell so far?" Maria asked in a friendly tone. She was curious to learn more about the dark-haired beauty.

“Oh, it’s okay, I guess. It’s nothing like California,” she added as an afterthought.

Maria’s eyes grew wide. “Wow.. you’re from Cali? I’ve always wanted to go there! What’s it like? Have you seen any movie stars? Do you know any movie stars?”

Liz laughed at the awestruck tone in Maria’s voice. “Well, one time I thought I saw Tom Cruise at a grocery store, but it turned out to be a well-built midget.”

Maria snorted at that and the two girls started laughing.

As they continued to talk, and Maria explained the way everything in Roswell worked, Liz found herself thoroughly enjoying the girl’s company.

Well, Liz. It looks like you just made your first friend, she thought in satisfaction.

“Oh, and you’ll have to meet my boyfriend, Michael Guerin. He’s spacey at times, but I love him,” she sighed.

Liz wistfully studied the love-struck look on Maria’s face. She remembered a time when her own expression was filled with longing and a child’s love.

She quickly drew her attention back to Maria as she continued to babble.

“Anyway, you’ll just have to let me show you around school. When are you starting?” she asked curiously.

Liz thought for a moment. “Oh, tomorrow I think. If the school can get my transcripts in. Probably tomorrow.”

Maria squealed. “Great! I can’t wait to introduce you to everyone… oh, Liz! I just know we’re going to be best friends!”

Liz smiled at the blonde as she bounced up and down, her antenna bobbing on her head.

Maybe Roswell wouldn’t be as bad as she had thought.

<center>******************************</center>

Max pushed through the doors of the CrashDown Café, the familiar door jingle filling the air. He walked over to his usual booth in the corner and began scanning through a menu.

“Max, I have one thing to say to you,” Maria DeLuca wrinkled her nose as she headed over to her friend’s table to take his order.

Max raised an brow, not lifting his eyes from the lunch menu. “It better not include the words ‘cedar oil’.”

Maria smirked. “Ha ha… but really, you should consider taking a shower before coming into this place. You smell like three day old garbage!”

“Gee… thanks a lot, Maria. For your information, the school shut off the plumbing for the next few days and I couldn’t get home to shower before coming to meet Michael.”

Maria’s face perked up. “Where is my Mikey G? I thought you guys had practice?”

Max gave her a duh look. “Yeah, it ended a few minutes ago. Michael’s just out parking his car.”

“Oh, well what can I get you while you’re waiting?” Maria asked, pulling out her order pad.

“Uh… just a cherry coke for now. All that running circles around Michael made me lose my appetite,” Max joked.

“Very funny, Maxwell,” Michael grumbled as he slumped into the booth across from his friend.

“Bad day?” Maria asked, running her hand over the spikes that consisted of Michael’s hair.

“Coach is just a nut case, that’s all. Thinks everyone on the team is as good as wonder-boy here,” he replied, gesturing in Max’s direction.

Maria murmured, “Aw, poor baby,” and leaned down to kiss him hello.

“So, you picking me up tomorrow morning?” Michael asked, pulling Maria into his lap, nuzzling her neck softly.

Max couldn’t help but be a little envious at the happiness of Maria and Michael’s relationship. He thought of his own screwed up one and sighed deeply.

“Oh, I can’t. I promised the new girl I would pick her up and show her around school,” Maria remembered.

“What new girl?” Michael asked, bringing Max back to the conversation.

“Oh, you know the family that’s taking over the café? They have a daughter our age. She’s really nice and really pretty. Reminds me of an Italian princess…” Maria sighed dramatically.

Really? That hot, huh?” Max joked.

“Don’t even think about it, Max. Besides, you have your own adorable gerbil to deal with,” Maria said sarcastically. She too, didn’t approve of Max and Tess’s relationship.

In fact, the only person who did was Tess.

“Yeah, well, don’t remind me,” Max muttered.

“I really wish you guys could have met her, but she just left to go register for school. Oh, well, you can meet her tomorrow,” Maria said flippantly, changing the subject.

Max half-listened to the conversation and sipped at his cherry coke. After Maria finally left to go get their orders, he turned to Michael.

“So, sounds like Maria has found herself a new best friend. Probably won’t have time for poor old you anymore,” Max teased.

“Naw, she can’t get enough of what I have to give,” Michael puffed out his chest. “Hey, maybe this girl will provide a pleasant distraction from Tess. You never know…” he sang.

“Yeah, well, don’t get your hopes up. I’m not looking for love,” Max said, downing his drink in one gulp, wiping a hand across his lips.

Michael thought he detected a hint of disappointment in Max’s voice, but decided not to say anything.

<center>*******************************</center>

The next morning, Liz stared at herself in the mirror, giving herself a pep talk before heading down to the café to wait for Maria.

She thanked her lucky stars that Roswell had pretty much the same climate as California. All her clothes would still be comfortable and in season.

She had decided to wear a form-fitting white sundress from D&B. She liked the way it showed off her deep California tan and her long legs, which she considered her best feature.

Her skin was so clear that she had only ever had to wear a little blush and lip gloss, but today Liz had added a little eyeliner to further draw out her huge brown eyes. After much consideration, she had also decided to leave her hair loose and wavy, spilling over her bare shoulders in a chocolate waterfall.

Pleased with the effects, Liz grabbed her purse and her bookbag and headed downstairs.

Maria was sitting on one of the swivel chairs at the bar, her fingers tapping the counter as she bobbed her head to the music playing overhead.

Liz had to smile as she saw the outfit Maria was decked out in.

She was wearing a pair of black leather pants and a fuzzy purple tank top, complete with black platform sandals. Her blonde hair was pinned up with a million barrettes and it seemed that all her makeup contained some form of glitter.

She reminded Liz of a rocker girl. But Liz had to admit that while the look would be completely ridiculous on her, Maria managed to pull it off with much style.

As she caught sight of Liz, her bright green eyes lit up and she hopped off the seat.

“Hi!” she chirped, giving Liz a once-over. “Wow, chica! You are one hot tamale! Lookin good!”

Liz laughed and the two girls joined arms as they headed for Maria’s red Jetta.

Liz couldn't remember the last time she'd had this much fun with another girl. She and Maria joked during the drive to school, singing along with the radio and gossiping.

“So this is it!” Maria said as the two girls stood outside the school building a few minutes later. “Probably not as big as your last school, huh?”

Liz took in the sprawling campus and the students who were scattered along the lawn, talking and laughing. “Actually, it’s a lot like it. Calabasa is just a small suburb of LA.”

“Well, come on! I’ll give you a tour of the campus,” Maria said, leading Liz up the stairs towards the main building.

Liz was so intent on listening to the stories Maria was telling her about the student body, that she didn’t notice the many stares thrown her way.

“Wow… who is that?”

“I don’t think I remember seeing her before..”

“Must be new…”

“Damn, she’s fine!”

The male population of West Roswell High practically drooled as Liz walked by, tossing her brown hair over her shoulder as she laughed at something Maria said.

The females glared at her considering her new competition for their men.

“Good morning, ladies,” a voice sounded from behind them and Liz turned around to see it’s owner.

Maria sighed. “What do you want, Kyle?” she asked irritably.

Kyle ignored her and his eyes widened as he took in Liz’s countenance. “Well… you must be the new girl! I’m Kyle Valenti, and I would be glad to service you in… any way you need,” he finished smoothly.

“Whatever, Kyle. Liz, ignore him. We have many more important people to meet to be wasting time on this miscreant,” she shot Kyle a pointed look and he held his hands up.

“Hey, is that anyway to speak to your dear old brother?” he teased, watching the sparks flying in Maria’s verdant eyes.

Liz looked at Maria in surprise. “He’s your brother?” Funny, they didn’t look alike.

She had to admit, Kyle was extremely handsome with his All-American good looks and muscled body.

Step-brother,” Maria corrected. “Just because your father married my mother doesn’t make us relatives.”

“Actually, DeLuca, that’s exactly what it means,” Kyle rolled his eyes.

“Whatever, listen… what do I have to do to get you to leave?” Maria asked in annoyance.

Kyle flashed her a smile and his eyes fell on Liz. “How about an introduction?”

Maria did not like the way he was looking at her new friend… or the way Liz smiled back, obviously flattered. But if this would get him to leave…

“Fine, fine, fine. Kyle Valenti, this is Liz Parker. Newest arrival to Roswell. Liz Parker, this is Kyle Valenti. Football jock with a low IQ.”

Kyle glared at her and Liz stifled a laugh at the interaction between the two. They certainly had that sibling-rivalry thing going on…

“It’s nice to meet you, Kyle,” Liz said sincerely, holding out her hand as Maria snorted.

Kyle smiled and shook it. “Nice to meet you, too. I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty more of each other, huh, sis?”

Maria was about to reply, when the overhead bell rang. Liz took this opportunity to change the subject.

“I guess we’d better go. I don’t want to be late my first day,” she said, taking Maria’s arm.

“Right, well take care Liz. See ya later,” Kyle said, smiling before he turned and headed towards his class.

“He seems nice,” Liz mused, and Maria scowled.

“Yeah, try living with him a little while and you’ll change your mind. Unless hearing someone burp the alphabet forwards and backwards is your idea of a rockin' good time.”

Liz laughed.

“So what do you have first?” Maria asked curiously.

Liz consulted her schedule. “Oh, um… biology. Miss Hardy?”

“Damn. I have English first. Oh well, I’ll just show you to your room.”

As the two girls headed through the crowd of bustling students, Liz listened as Maria blathered something about lunch.

She was so intent on her conversation that she didn’t pay attention to where she was going as she turned the corner, and ran right into a wall.

A wall of rock hard, muscled flesh.

“Oh my God! I am so sorry!” she gasped as she felt the person grab her shoulders to prevent them both from falling over.

Her face flushed in embarrassment. Had she already made a complete moron of herself?

“It’s alright,” a deep voice rumbled above her and Liz sucked in a breath as she realized she was still in the arms of the person she had nearly steam-rolled.

She gulped, feeling the warm hands grip her bare arms and she caught a scent of crisp cologne. Mmm… heavenly…

She looked up, preparing to apologize and offer her thanks, when she found herself staring into a pair of warm golden orbs.

She didn’t even have to look the rest of him over to know who was holding her.

She would know those eyes anywhere.

And they widened in realization as they gazed into her own. His hands gripped her harder.

“L..Liz?”

“Max…” she whispered softly.

<center>Chapter 3</center>

“Michael, I told you we were going to be late!” Max said irritably as he hurried through the halls of West Roswell.

“Hey, don’t get your boxers in a twist, Maxwell. I couldn’t find my English book,” Michael stated defensively.

“Now I can see why Maria blew you off today,” Max mumbled under his breath. Michael may be his best friend, but the guy apparently had no sense of time.

“Whatever, Max. Just remember, my apartment tonight. Bring the munchies,” Michael clapped his hand on Max’s back as they headed rounded a corner.

Max was about to reply, when he felt a small body slam into him. He rocked backwards from the force of the impact and immediately reached out and grabbed the person’s shoulders to steady himself.

And came into contact with the softest skin he had ever felt.

“Oh my God! I am so sorry!” a sweet voice apologized.

“It’s alright,” Max responded warmly, realizing the person was probably beyond embarrassed at having practically knocked him down.

He opened his mouth to speak again, when said person lifted her eyes to meet his gaze.

Max’s own eyes widened as he found himself staring into a pair of velvety chocolate orbs that he’d thought he’d never see again.

Breath catching in his throat and heart beating wildly, he stared in shock at the face of his childhood love.

“L… Liz?” he croaked, his mind a whirling mix of shock and confusion.

“Max…” she whispered back, confirming his suspicions, although he had already known it was true.

As he stared down at her, he suddenly realized he was still holding her in his arms and that his grip had grown increasingly tighter.

He immediately dropped his hands, shoving a hand through his hair as he felt his face flush.

Liz’s face had also turned a pretty shade of pink as she straightened her dress, avoiding eye contact with Max.

She couldn’t believe this! In all her wildest dreams of seeing Max Evans again, never did she think they would end up at the same school, or that she would end up in his arms after practically running him over.

“Liz… is it really you?” Max asked as he stared at her in disbelief.

He definitely wasn’t prepared for this.

Of all the ways he’d dreamed of coming back into her life, he had never imagined she would just... show up at his school.

“Yeah, surprise!” Liz laughed nervously, pushing her hair back behind her ears, causing Max to grin broadly at the gesture he remembered from so long ago.

“Liz Parker! God, it’s great to see you! You look… you look great!” he breathed, taking in her appearance with hungry eyes.

She had become even more beautiful over the years. Her hair was a little longer than he remembered, but still just as silky and smooth as it cascaded over her bare shoulders.

Max’s mouth went dry as his eyes fell lower. The temperature heated up about ten degrees as his gaze slid over the soft curves of her body, down to her long shapely legs.

She was gorgeous.

In the meantime, Liz had been doing her own observing.

She stared in awe at the well-developed muscles that covered Max’s body, practically bulging out of his black v-neck t-shirt. As her eyes traveled further, she gulped at the muscles she could practically see through his jeans.

“You look… great, too,” she managed to say through the drool that had suddenly puddled in her mouth.

“So what are you doing here? I thought you were living in California?” he said, his eyes questioning.

“Oh, yeah… well, after what happened to grandma, we moved out here to take care of the CrashDown Café,” Liz answered, her body burning from the way Max’s eyes practically devoured her.

The CrashDown? She was the Italian Princess Maria had been talking about? Max could certainly see why his friend would have said that, even though he personally thought the reference didn’t do her justice.

She was more like a… goddess. Like that Greek god of beauty… Aphrodite? Whatever, she was that.

The two were so lost in their own little world that they forgot they were standing in the middle of a crowded hallway. That is, until someone cleared their throat.

“You two know each other?” Maria asked, a smile forming on her lips. Whew! Was it hot in here, or was it just her?

The sparks flying between Max and Liz were as obvious as Pam Troy’s latest attempt at getting into bed with Tommy Bates.

Max and Liz broke their staring contest and looked over to see a smiling Maria and an extremely confused Michael.

“Uh, Liz and I went to the same summer camp when we were ten,” Max explained, hesitating to say anything more.

“And you still remember her after all this time? Wow, she must have done a number on you, Maxwell,” Michael whistled, causing a deep blush to crawl up both Max and Liz’s face.

“So, did you guys have like a childhood crush on each other?” Maria asked, trying to pry the information she wanted to know out of her two friends.

Max met Liz’s eyes. Is that all it was? A childhood crush? He certainly hadn’t thought so at the time. But maybe that’s what Liz had thought. Maybe that’s why she had forgotten him…

“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” Max laughed, scratching his head in embarrassment.

Liz felt her heart sink when Maria referred to what she and Max had shared as a childhood crush and then Max confirmed it. Maybe that was why he had stopped writing her all those years ago.

Maybe all she had been to him was a childhood crush.

“Yeah, just a childhood crush,” she whispered, trying to blink back the tears that were forming behind her brown eyes.

Max noticed the disappointment in her tone and his wanted to kick himself when he saw the gleam of unshed tears she was trying so desperately to hide.

He had hurt her, belittling what they had shared. He knew it was more than just a case of puppy love… but he hadn’t wanted to admit it in front of Michael and Maria’s prying eyes.

Not until he could talk with Liz first.

“Liz…” he said softly, causing her to look in his direction. She mustered up a small smile and shook her head.

“Max and I were good friends. That’s all it was,” she said, unknowingly breaking Max’s heart all over again.

Maria raised an eyebrow. Good friends her ass. She wasn’t sure exactly what was going on, but there was nothing friendly about it.

Max and Liz were wearing love-struck expressions on their faces, clouded by sadness. She would get to the bottom of this and when she did…

“Max! Where have you been? I called you like, five times! Weren’t you at home last night?”

All four friends turned and stared as Tess Harding stomped up, her hands on her hips.

When she got to Max’s side, she looked up and batted her eyelashes at him, hooking her arm through his.

Tess turned and glared at the brunette standing next to Max. Her eyes narrowed in distaste as she gave a fake smile.

“I don’t believe we’ve met yet. I’m Tess Harding, Max’s girlfriend. And you are?” Tess asked, turning her nose up at Liz.

Liz’s eyes shifted from Tess’s grip on Max’s arm to Max’s uncomfortable look, to Maria’s annoyed one.

“I’m Liz Parker. My parent’s own the CrashDown. We just moved here from California,” Liz answered, trying not to get upset at the fact that Max had a girlfriend.

“Oh, you’re old Claudia Parker’s granddaughter? Charming. Too bad about her, though,” Tess replied in a snide voice.

Max bristled at her tone. He didn’t like the way she was treating Liz and he was not going to let her get away with it. He pulled away from her and gave her a sharp look. “Cut it out, Tess.”

Tess caught the look that passed between Max and the new girl and her eyes flashed. How dare this girl try and take her man?

She eyed Liz Parker carefully. Okay, so the girl was pretty, but she wasn’t any prettier than Tess herself.

But something about the way Max was looking at her made Tess’s blood boil. She became determined then and there that she would make Liz Parker understand that Max Evans belonged to her.

And if she tried anything… well, Tess would just have to make sure Liz was on the first plane back to California.

She smiled smugly and reached up to cup Max’s cheek, pulling his face down into a kiss before he could protest.

Max fought the urge to recoil as Tess’s tongue snaked into his mouth, and he pulled away abruptly.

“See you later, Maxie,” she winked, giving Max a sultry look before glaring at Liz and walking off, her heels clicking down the hallway.

Liz could still feel the icy glares that Tess had been shooting her way and had to swallow the bile that rose to her throat at the sight of Max kissing her.

“God, Max! Why do you put up with her? I swear, one of these days…” Michael held his fist up and Max cut him off.

“Can it, Michael.”

He caught the disappointed look in Liz’s eyes and in that moment he wanted nothing more than to run after Tess and break it off with her once and for all.

That, or grab Liz in his arms and kiss her passionately the way he had been wanting to do since she had literally stumbled back into his life.

“I’m just saying…” Michael mumbled, and Maria put her hand on his arm, realizing a subject change was in order.

She would have plenty of time to figure out a way to get Max and Liz together later.

“Well, now that you’ve met the gerbil, it’s time to introduce you to the most important guy in my life. Liz, this is my boyfriend, Michael Guerin,” Maria smiled, gazing up at Michael adoringly.

“It’s nice to meet you, Michael. Maria’s told me all about you,” Liz smiled genuinely, glad to be able to think about something besides Max and Tess.

Michael smiled and nodded his head. “Likewise. Any friend of Maria’s…. or Max… is cool in my book.”

Another awkward silence fell on the foursome.

Suddenly, the five minute warning bell rang, snapping them out of their daze.

“Oh come on Michael! I cannot be late to Seligman’s class or else he’ll call my mom and she’ll ground me from the car again!” Maria squealed, taking Michael’s arm and dragging him off.

“Bye Max, Liz!” she threw over her shoulder and Michael managed a wave before they rounded the corner.

Max cleared his throat and looked down at his shoes. “So…”

“So…” Liz repeated, feeling her face flush for what had to be the millionth time since laying eyes on Max Evans again.

“So, who do you have first?” Max asked, hoping to relieve some of the awkward tension between them.

“AP Bio,” Liz answered.

A broad smile broke out over Max’s face. “With Hardy?” At Liz’s nod, he smiled even wider. “I have that class too. Come on, I’ll walk with you.”

Liz smiled and nodded, and the two walked off together, not noticing the whispers or looks they were getting from the other students.

One pair of blue eyes in particular watched the couple as a plan formed in her head.

<center>***************************</center>

Max pulled Liz into the biology room just as the late bell sounded overhead.

He noticed that Miss Hardy wasn’t there yet, and breathed a sigh of relief for small favors.

As soon as the couple walked in, the whispering had started about who the mystery girl with Max Evans was.

The males stared at her in appreciation as the females glared at her enviously.

“So, I guess we better find somewhere to sit,” Liz said, oblivious to the whispering going on around her. She was too aware of the fact that Max still had his hand circled around her wrist.

“Yeah…” Max replied, getting lost in her eyes again. He made no move, and Liz giggled nervously.

“Um, Max? Seat?”

Max gave her a confused look and then his eyes widened in realization. “Oh, Oh! Yeah, you’re right.”

He led Liz back to the back of the classroom and gestured to the empty seat at his table.

Liz smiled as she placed her bookbag on the floor next to her and settled herself into her seat, tossing her brown hair over her shoulder.

Max gulped at the innocent act and quickly sat down before he did something that wouldn’t be appropriate in front of a class full of students.

He opened his mouth to say something, when Miss Hardy walked into the classroom.

“Good morning, everyone. Sorry I was late, but I’m glad to see none of you went ahead and invoked the ten minute rule,” she said looking pointedly at Kyle, who smiled brightly as the class laughed.

The ‘ten minute rule’ was an old joke for the students of West Roswell: if the teacher was more than ten minutes late, then it was deemed perfectly okay for the students to leave.

Kyle Valenti was well known for putting this rule into effect.

After the class had quieted down, Miss Hardy looked up and announced, “Okay, class. It seems we have a new future scientist in our midst. Liz Parker, would you mind standing up and introducing yourself to everyone?”

Liz smiled nervously and stood up, locking eyes with Max before turning to the rest of the class. “Um, I’m Liz and I just moved here from Calabasa, California...”

The guys stared as she spoke and Max fumed at the way they all seemed to be undressing her with their eyes.

“… really enjoying it here in Roswell so far,” Liz finished and she sat down, her face a pretty shade of pink.

“Great, Liz we’re glad to have you here,” Miss Hardy replied, smiling at the pretty dark-haired girl. “And since you already seem to be pretty comfortable back there with Mr. Evans, we’ll just leave you two as lab partners, okay?”

Liz flushed even more as she nodded while Max grinned. This was perfect! Him and Liz… all year…

“Okay, open up your books and turn to page 33. We’re going to be discussing the differences between plant and animal cells today so please pay attention as this will be on your test Friday…”

Pam Troy watched as Max smiled at the new girl and leaned over to whisper in her ear. Liz smiled and nodded, whispering something back which made Max chuckle.

Oh boy, Tess was not going to be happy when she heard about this.

<center>*********************</center>

“What do you mean… laughing together?” Tess snapped, her blue eyes flashing angrily.

Pam sighed. She really couldn’t stand Tess, she just had to be nice to her because Tess was the captain of the cheerleading squad and could have Pam dropped in an instant.

So when Tess had come to her and asked, well, demanded that Pam tell her everything that went on between Max and the new girl during biology, Pam had no choice but to comply.

“I mean that they were laughing. You know, ha ha,” Pam snapped back. God, this girl was irritating.

Tess fumed. She had known this girl would be a problem. Oh well. She would just have to nip this in the bud before it got out of hand. There was no way she, Tess Harding, was about to be shown up by a mousy brunette with no taste.

“Well, I think it’s time to give Liz Parker an appropriate welcome to Roswell,” Tess smiled smugly, tapping a long nail on her chin.

Pam felt sorry for the new girl, because it looked like whatever Tess had planned was not going to be good.

<center>***************************</center>

“So, you’re living at the Crashdown now?” Max asked as he and Liz made their way through the halls after biology.

“Yeah, it’s kind of strange. I mean, I’m not used to being able to just go downstairs and actually have a restaurant's worth of food to choose from when I want a midnight snack, you know?” Liz laughed.

“Yeah… must be nice. All we have is that health food junk Isabel likes. You know, anything and everything possibly made out of tofu?” Max grinned.

They shared another laugh and Max marveled at how everything felt right in the world at that moment.

He glanced over at Liz, his breath catching as he took in her smiling face and glowing eyes.

As they reached Liz’s next class, Liz turned and faced him. “Well, thanks for showing me around…” she said shyly.

Max only nodded, transfixed by her beauty. He still couldn’t believe she was actually here, standing in front of him.

It was as if all his prayers had been answered.

Without thinking, he reached out and tucked a wayward strand of hair behind Liz’s ear, his fingers lightly grazing her cheek as he pulled back.

Liz’s eyes fluttered shut as she felt his soft caress. When she opened them again, she found Max staring at her, a look of complete adoration on his handsome face.

“You had a … um…”

“Hair thing…” Liz finished, and they both smiled at the remembrance of a memory from long ago.

“Yeah…” he answered softly, unable to tear his eyes away from hers.

They stood in the middle of the deserted hallway, staring at each other, when Max began to lean towards her.

Liz’s breath quickened as she saw Max’s eyes turn from golden amber to a much darker hue as his lips neared her own.

Her eyes were just closing when the sound of a locker being slammed down the hall broke brought them back to reality.

Max straightened, his body humming with unfulfilled desire. As he glanced back at Liz, he could see her battling back her own emotions.

“Well… I better get inside. Don’t want to make a bad impression on the first day,” Liz murmured, breaking the silence.

Max nodded, kicking himself for not just going for it and kissing the girl of his dreams.

It was all he could think about.

Liz gave him a small smile before finally turning around and heading towards her next class.

Max watched as she began to walk away, and he suddenly felt a desperate need to make sure she didn’t walk out on his life again.

“Liz!”

Liz immediately turned, her brown eyes searching his expectantly. “Yes, Max?” she asked hopefully.

Max took a step forward, his heart pounding in his chest. “Would you… I mean… do you have a ride home from school?” he blurted out, immediately wanting to smack himself in the head.

Since when did Max Evans, Mr. Suave, sound like such a pathetic dork?

That’s easy, when the girl of his dreams crashed into him, and back into his life.

“Well, Maria gave me a ride here…” Liz trailed off, unsure if he was going to ask her or not.

She didn’t want to appear desperate, but if he asked, she definitely wanted to be able to say yes.

“Well, Michael has been complaining about wanting to spend time with her, so why don’t you let me take you?” Max replied. Nice save, Evans. You didn’t sound too desperate to spend more time with her.

“Um, well… sure Max,” Liz smiled, and Max felt a smile break out on his own face.

“Great… then I’ll meet you at your locker at last bell?”

Liz nodded, her brown hair falling around her face as she did so. Max ached to run his fingers through it again, to feel the silkiness of it sliding through his fingertips…

“Well, I’ll see you then, Liz,” he gulped. Lord, why couldn’t he think around her? It was as if his mind became a big pile of mush.

“Okay, see you then,” Liz echoed, giving him another smile, before opening the classroom door and slipping in.

Max stared after her as she left and felt himself sigh as when she closed the door after her.

Oh yeah, he was a goner.

<center>Chapter 4</center>

Liz frowned in irritation as she tried to get her locker open for what seemed like the tenth time in the past two minutes.

“Dammit!” she muttered, glancing down at her combination. She bit her lip, then spun the dial again.

Taking a deep breath, she attempted to unlock the door, but it stayed fast.

Argh!” she moaned, slamming her fist into the locker in frustration.

“Hey, be careful! Those things bite back!” a teasing voice sounded from behind her.

Liz turned her head to find a tall, lanky brown-haired boy smiling at her. She gave a tentative smile in return as he stepped forward.

“Alex Whitman, at your service,” he bowed dramatically and Liz giggled despite her bad mood.

“Hi, I’m Liz. Liz Parker,” she smiled. “Just moved from California.”

“Ahh… then you haven’t been properly instructed on the mechanics of West Roswell school property,” he joked.

“I guess not,” Liz admitted, glaring at her locker in disgust. “I know I’m putting in the right combination, but for some reason, it just doesn’t want to open.”

Alex took the piece of paper from Liz’s hand and studied it, then glanced at her locker. “Have you tried spinning it a whole revolution past thirteen?” he inquired.

Liz frowned. “No, I thought it said a half-turn?”

“Ah, you see… the mechanics of West Roswell school property. Nothing is ever as it seems. Take the heating system for example – we get air conditioner in the winter and heat in the summer! Lovely, huh?”

Liz giggled again. Alex seemed really nice, and she watched in amazement as he spun the dial on her locker and pulled it open with flourish.

“There you go!” he smiled happily. “Anything else I can do for you?”

Liz shook her head. “No, I think I’m good. Thank you though!”

“Anytime. So, how are you liking Roswell? Met any aliens?” he teased, causing Liz to laugh.

“No, you guys are really hung up on that stuff, huh?”

“Oh, just wait until the Crash Festival. That’s when the real loonies come out of their bins,” Alex replied, wiggling his eyebrows.

Liz scrunched her nose. “The Crash Festival?”

Alex feigned shock. “What? You mean you haven’t heard of the annual Roswell Crash Festival? Well, pal, that’s when everyone dresses up as their favorite version of an extra-terrestrial and gathers out in the desert to celebrate the infamous crash landing of ’47. Complete with live bands and hot dog stands.”

Liz cracked up. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Oh, no! Oh, and then there’s the Alien SmackDown – think WWF with little green men - and the UFO museum usually has some kind of gathering for all the sci-fi-nuts who come to Roswell, and then there’s the – “

Liz held up a hand. “Okay, I get the idea!”

The two new friends laughed as they commiserated on the craziness that surrounded Roswell, New Mexico.

“Alex! What are you doing? Everyone’s waiting for us in the quad!”

Liz turned around and saw a tall, leggy blonde walking towards them. She was beautiful, with her golden brown eyes and flawless skin.

“Oh, hey Isabel. I was just getting to know the newest arrival to West Roswell,” Alex explained, gesturing towards Liz.

Isabel glanced from Alex to Liz, her eyes narrowing as she checked out the brunette talking to her boyfriend. “Hi, I’m Isabel Evans,” she said curtly, running a perfectly manicured hand through her hair.

Liz’s eyes widened. “Isabel Evans!”

Isabel frowned. There was something about this girl that seemed familiar… and apparently she seemed to recognize her. But from where? “Do I know you?”

A smile broke out over Liz’s face as she nodded. “Think back a few years… summer… Camp Canyon Creek?”

Isabel frowned deeper. What the hell was she talking about? And how did she know about…

She gasped as she suddenly recognized the petite girl in front of her. “Oh my God! Liz Parker? Is that you?”

Liz laughed and nodded and the two girls started squealing, hugging each other. Alex looked at them in astonishment.

“Um, what’s going on Isabel? You two already know each other?”

“Alex, Liz and I went to summer camp together a long time ago. God, I can’t believe you’re here! Wait, does Max know?” she demanded.

Liz nodded. “Yeah, I sort of… ran into him this morning.” Literally.

Isabel’s face brightened even more. “Oh my God! This is perfect! I mean, now you two can get back together and Max can finally dump that stupid gerbil and…”

“Hold it!” Alex interupted, pinching the bridge of his nose, his mind on overload. “What do you mean, get back together? Liz, you and Max used to go out?”

“No,” Liz answered at the same time that Isabel answered, “Yes!”

Alex looked at them in confusion. “Um, okay?”

“Liz was Max’s first kiss,” Isabel explained, frowning at Liz.

Alex raised an eyebrow. “Really? Hmm… and here I thought that super-cool Maxwell Evans was just born knowing all that stuff. Kind of makes me feel better… how old were you guys again? Fourteen, fifteen?”

Liz looked a little sheepish, avoiding Alex’s gaze as she answered. “Um… ten.”

Alex’s eyes practically bugged out of his head. “Ten? Dammit! There goes that theory!”

Isabel ignored Alex’s comment, studying Liz carefully. She seemed a little nervous talking about Max, but there was no denying the sparkle in her eye. Oh, yes, Isabel knew that look well.

She had seen it in Max’s eyes everyday since they had left camp that summer. Which meant one thing.

Liz Parker was just as much in love with her brother as he was with her.

Isabel’s mind began to whirl with possible ways to set them up. But first things first…

She had to get Tess Harding out of the way.

Isabel knew that Tess was not going to be happy once she caught wind of Max and Liz’s prior relationship and Isabel only hoped she hadn’t heard about it already.

She needed time to put her plan into action.

She made a mental note to find Maria immediately and get her friend’s help on her little match-making scheme.

“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starving. What do you say we go get some food?” Alex suggested, tired of trying to process whatever the hell was going on.

Girls. He would never begin to pretend he understood them.

“Great idea, honey. What do you say, Liz? We have a lot of catching up to do,” Isabel said, smiling at her old friend. “Besides, Max and everyone will be there.”

Liz’s eyes lit up at the thought of seeing Max again and Isabel smiled smugly as she caught the look.

Oh yeah, this was gonna be cake.

“Yeah, sure. Just let me get my bag,” Liz replied, shutting her locker and retrieving her bookbag from the tile floor. She turned towards Isabel and Alex and smiled.

“Let’s go,” Isabel said, leading the way.

<center>*******************************</center>

Max sat at his usual lunch table in the quad of West Roswell High, chewing thoughtfully on a granola bar.

Students laughed and talked around him, many of them often stopping to say a word of greeting to the popular football player.

Max smiled politely, but couldn’t find it in him to strike up a conversation. He was too engrossed in his thoughts of a certain dark-haired beauty. That is, until…

Max! Hello, are you listening to me?”

Max looked up to find an irritated Maria DeLuca waving a hand in his face, her eyes accusing. He took a swig of his cherry coke and nodded. “Yeah, sure, Maria.”

Maria rolled her eyes. Max was a terrible liar. But she wasn’t in the mood to question his silence. At the moment, more important things were on her mind.

“So, when are you going to tell us the real deal about you and Liz Parker?”

Max choked on his drink and erupted in a coughing fit, which ceased only when Michael punched him hard in the back.

“Thanks,” Max sputtered, glaring at Michael as he rubbed the now sore spot on his back.

Michael took a bite from his sandwich and shrugged. “No problemo, Maxwell,” he replied cheerfully, unaware of Max’s look.

Maria cleared her throat and repeated her question. “Well, Max?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Maria,” Max sighed, hoping to hell that she would drop it.

No such luck.

“Oh, come on Max. You’re an awful liar. I saw the way you two were looking at each other, so spill! Unless you’d rather I asked Liz myself…”

No!” Max practically shouted, his face turning red as everyone in the quad stopped and stared at him.

Michael snorted and Max glared at him again.

Maria raised an eyebrow. “You were saying?”

“Look, Maria, we’re friends. We knew each other way back in the day and haven’t seen each other in a long time,” Max said, avoiding Maria’s gaze.

“Uh, huh. And that’s why you both were playing the modern version of Romeo and Juliet back there?” Maria continued.

Max bit his lip. “Okay! Maybe we were a little more than friends…” he admitted, grimacing when Maria squealed and began bouncing up and down in her seat.

“Geez, Maria! Some of us would like to have our hearing ten years from now!” Michael grumbled, holding his hands over his ears.

Maria shot him a death glare and Michael swallowed hard, suddenly becoming engrossed in his bag of potato chips. She turned back to Max.

“I knew it! I sooo knew it! The way you two were acting… So what, you both fell desperately in love at the tender age of ten and were parted by scheming, manipulative parents?” Maria sighed, leaning towards Max in excitement.

Michael snorted. "This isn't one of your Gothic romance books, Mar."

Max began to smile dreamily, his eyes lighting up as memories filled his head. “She was my first kiss…”

Maria and Max sighed at the same time and Michael just stared at the two of them in bewilderment. “What the hell is up with you two? Maxwell? Are you alright?”

“Oh, shut up, Mikey G!” Maria snapped. “Can’t you see we’re having an important conversation!”

Michael grinned. “Have I ever told you how much of a turn on it is when you call me that?”

Maria stuck out her tongue and Michael growled playfully.

“So, what happened?” Maria prodded, turning her attention back to Max.

Max swallowed, his eyes glazing over with a faint sadness. “We never saw each other again after that summer. I came back the next session, but she never showed up. After that we just… lost contact.”

Maria listened to the emotion in Max’s voice and decided it would be a good time to implement phase one of her plan. “Well, she’s here now. Doesn’t that have to mean something? Like a sign?”

Max frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Max, some things that happen in life happen for a reason. Maybe you and Liz met all those years ago and fell in love only to meet up again later down the road when you both were ready for a relationship. It’s called Fate.”

Max thought about that. As much as he wanted what Maria was saying to be true, he couldn’t help but wonder what Liz thought about everything.

Was she feeling the same way as he was right now? Had she spent seven years of her life wondering about him and what he was doing?

As if on cue, Max suddenly heard the sound of his sister approaching the table. And behind her was Liz Parker.

<center>Chapter Five</center>

Liz waved goodbye to Maria as she headed for her locker at the end of the day. She spun the dial and smiled as it opened the first time.

Thank God for Alex, she thought wryly, her mood much lighter than it had been before lunch.

Of course, that had nothing to do with her locker and everything to do with a certain dark-haired dream boat that had sat next to her the whole hour, making her laugh as he recanted the times they had shared during camp with the rest of the group.

She could still see Max laughing as Isabel mentioned the three-legged race Max and Liz had won, his amber eyes sparkling with humor and his lips curved into an infectious smile.

He'd reached under the table at one point and touched her hand, his eyes meeting hers for a brief moment as Maria was blabbing on about the new aroma-therapy store that had just opened in town.

Although he quickly pulled away when Maria directed a question towards him, his face flushed and his eyes a darker hue than usual, the feel of electric energy that coursed through her body at his light touch was forever emblazoned in her mind.

She knew what that meant. She was still head over heels in love with one Max Evans.

Big surprise.

But the question was, what did Max feel for her? At times Liz felt that she was the only person in the world when he looked at her. But the moment always seemed to get interrupted, and then they would act as if nothing had happened.

And there was Tess…. she was Max’s girlfriend. Even though no one in the group seemed to care for her very much, and Liz could certainly understand why, Max must because he was still dating her.

“Liz! How nice to see you again!”

Liz frowned at the sugary sweet voice that sounded behind her, and she looked over her shoulder to see the she-devil herself sauntering towards her, swaying her hips ina way Liz assumed was meant to be sexy.

“Oh, hi Tess,” Liz said uncertainly. What in the world did Tess Harding want with her?

Probably to warn me to stay away from her man, Liz thought. Well, she wouldn't have to worry. Max didn't want her. Not anymore.

Tess smiled falsely and cocked her head, studying Liz. Liz felt like she was naked under the spotlight in front of a million people the way Tess was looking at her.

“So, Liz! We haven’t been properly introduced. I’m Tess Harding, and I’m the captain of the West Roswell cheerleading squad and Max’s girlfriend… Oh but enough about me, tell me about you!” Tess chirped, eyeing Liz with interest.

Liz opened her mouth to respond when another voice caught her attention.

“Hey, Liz! Ready to go?” Max asked, his eyes searching through his bookbag as he approached the two girls.

“MAX!” Tess squealed, immediately hurrying over to him and wrapping her ams around his waist.

Max looked up in surprise as he realized Tess was standing there with Liz. His eyes flickered to Liz’s and she shrugged her shoulders, avoiding eye contact with the two.

“Max, I’m so glad you’re here sweetie! I was just getting better acquainted with your friend,” Tess didn't bother to keep the contempt out of her voice, snuggling closer to Max. Then her eyes narrowed. “Wait, where were you two going?”

Max glanced at Liz, and saw the blank look in her eyes as she watched Tess hang all over him. He suddenly realized that it must appear that he didn’t mind. He extricated himself from Tess’s death grip and ran a hand through his hair, trying not to appear frustrated with Tess. “Tess, we were just…”

“Max was just giving me a ride home,” Liz stated bluntly. She saw no reason to lie. After all, as she had just proven, Tess was Max’s girlfriend. She deserved to know what he was going on.

No matter what her feelings for Max were, Liz was not the kind of person to try to steal someone’s boyfriend away.

Tess smiled brightly. “Oh, that’s so sweet of you Max!” she purred, running a hand up his chest. “Let me just grab my bag and we’ll be off!”

Max stared at her incredulously. “What are you talking about, Tess? You drove to school, remember?”

Tess racked her brain for an excuse. After seeing the way Max had looked at Liz when he first walked up, there was no way in hell she was leaving the two of them alone. “Oh, well, I had to take it to the garage during lunch, so now I’m stuck without a ride. Don’t worry honey, I knew you’d take me!”

Max tried not to look angry. He knew Tess was lying, but how was he going to prove it without looking like a jerk in front of Liz? He knew he wanted to break up with her, but now was not the time or the place.

“Fine,” he mumbled, shooting Liz an apologetic look.

“Great!” Tess smiled smugly.

She'd show Liz Parker who held Max's attention. And when it was over, Liz would wish she had never set foot in Roswell, New Mexico.

<center>*******************************</center>

Liz sat in the back of Max’s Jeep, staring out the window as Tess rambled on about something or another in the front passenger seat.

Max was having a hard time concentrating on driving while looking at Liz in the rearview mirror.

He glanced up again and managed to catch her eye as she turned back towards the front. They gazed at each other longingly for a moment before Tess spoke again.

“Don’t you think, sweetie?”

Max cleared his throat, and tore his gaze away from Liz. “Um, what Tess?”

Tess huffed. “I was saying that we should go check out that new horror movie that's opening tonight. Dawn of the Dead?”

“I can’t Tess,” Max responded immediately.

Tess laughed. “Oh, come on Max! You love those cheesy movies! Why don’t you just pick me up at seven and we’ll…”

“Tess, I said I can’t,” Max snapped, then an awkward silence fell on the three as Tess was momentarily startled. “I mean, Michael and I already have plans.”

“Oh!” Tess replied, her voice returning to its normal, annoyingly chirpy tone. “Well, tomorrow then?”

Max sighed. The girl just didn’t take a hint. “I don’t know, Tess.”

Liz watched the interaction in silent observation. Interesting… Max sure didn’t seem very eager to take his girlfriend out on a date.

Oh shut up, she told herself firmly. That doesn’t mean that Max likes you. Maybe he’s just sick of Tess. And with that annoying voice of hers, it’s no surprise why.

Just then, Max turned onto Tess’s street and Tess gasped in surprise.

“What… where are you going?” she asked as Max continued down the road she lived on.

Max gave her a strange look. “I’m taking you home, Tess. Remember?”

Tess bit her lip in frustration. “But… but… I thought you were going to take Liz home first?” she said, glancing at the girl in irritation.

Somehow she knew that Liz was behind this and it made her even more determined to show Liz exactly who she was dealing with.

Max laughed. “Why would I do that? Your house is much closer to the school and Liz lives near me. Besides, I told Michael I would meet him at the Crashdown,” Max lied, glancing at Liz out of the corner of his eye.

She had a faint smile on her lips, as if she knew exactly what he was doing.

Tess opened her mouth to respond, fuming, as Max pulled up to the Harding home. He got out the Jeep and walked over to open Tess’s door.

“Well, see you tomorrow Tess,” he said cheerfully, a bright smile on his face.

Tess glared at Liz and reluctantly stepped out of the car. Then a malicious smile broke over her face and she threw herself at Max, her lips covering his in a fierce kiss as she continued to stare at Liz triumphantly.

Liz swallowed and looked away, unnerved by the look in Tess’s eyes. Something was really wrong with that girl.

Max yanked himself out of Tess’s grasp and glared at her. “Goodbye, Tess,” he said firmly, walking back to the Jeep and gesturing for Liz to take the front passenger seat.

Liz complied, not looking at Tess once while doing so.

As Max revved the engine, Tess called out, “I’ll call you Max! Maybe we can get together after you and Michael’s little thing is over and have our own little… thing,” she said meaningfully.

Max ignored her and shifted the Jeep in gear, pulling out of Tess’s driveway.

When they were back on their way to the CrashDown, he looked over and found Liz looking at him in curiosity.

“What?” he asked, amused as she flushed at being caught staring at him.

Liz averted her eyes immediately. “Nothing… I was just thinking…”

“About what?”

Liz glanced back at him, wondering if she should say what she was actually thinking. At the last second she chickened out.

“Oh, I was thinking that I would like to see that movie, too. I love horror movies,” she said lamely.

“Oh. Then we should go see it sometime,” Max replied, smiling at her.

Liz wasn’t sure how to take that. Did he mean we as in him and her, or we as in the whole group? Or…

“We need to catch up anyway,” Max continued and Liz understood that he was talking about the two of them.

The thought made her smile. So, Max wanted to spend time with her. Even if it was just as friends.

“Yeah, sure. That would be fun,” she said shyly.

“Great! It’s a date!” Max said enthusiastically. “How about this weekend?”

Liz hadn’t heard anything past date. “What?”

“Are you busy Saturday night?”

Liz shook her head no and Max smiled. “Saturday it is.”

The two fell into a comfortable silence as Max continued to drive towards the Crashdown.

As he pulled into the parking lot, he turned to Liz. “So… the group is getting together tonight over at Michael’s new apartment…” he began

Liz raised an eyebrow. “Michael has his own apartment?”

“Yeah, he’s kind of an emancipated minor. His last foster father was a little…” Max hesitated to say anything more and Liz nodded.

“Oh.”

“Anyway, I’m sure everyone would want you to come,” Max continued, looking in her eyes.

Liz thought she heard him mumble something under his breath along the lines of “Especially me", but she could have been mistaken.

“I’d love to come. If it’s not a problem,” she added, smiling brightly.

Max looked relieved. “Great! I’ll pick you up around six-thirty?”

Liz nodded, then frowned. “But what about Tess?”

Max froze. What was she bringing Tess up for? “What about her?”

“Well, I thought you told her that it was a guy night between you and Michael.”

Max looked down guiltily. “Yeah... well, the rest of the group doesn’t really like Tess all that much. Besides, she can be a little…”

“Clingy?” Liz finished, then clapped a hand over her lips as she realized she had just insulted his girlfriend. “Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to…”

Max silenced her by placing a finger to her lips. “It’s okay. I know what you mean.”

Liz nodded, Max’s finger still against her lips.

Max stared down at her and the temperature heated as his gaze fell to his finger. Liz’s breath quickened as he began to trace the contours of her mouth, eyes following his every move.

Their eyes met as he spoke in a husky voice, “Liz… I haven’t had the chance to tell you how glad I am to see you again.”

Liz’s heart leapt. “Me too, Max. I mean, I’m glad to see you again, too…”

Max’s head leaned closer as his burning gaze raised the tempature another few degrees. “I really missed you…” he added, voice barely above a whisper.

Liz opened her mouth to answer, when her cell phone began to ring crazily.

She silently cursed whoever was on the other end as she fumbled through her purse in search of the offending object.

The mood broken, Max closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths to try to calm himself down. Damn! Another distraction.

His eyes filled with amusement as the jingling sound of her phone continued to ring. “Susie Q?”

Liz smiled, pulling out her tiny purple cell. “What can I say? I love the oldies.”

Max laughed, nodding his approval. “Can’t go wrong with CCR.”

Liz smiled and pressed the talk button. “Hello?”

Max watched as she continued to smile, a dopey grin stretching across his own lips. She was so beautiful…

“Yes, Maria, I’m coming tonight........ Oh, Max already told me about it....... Yes, I will....... No, I’ve got a ride,” she said, giving Max a shy smile.

Max rolled his eyes as Maria rambled on.

“…Uh, huh… Sure! We will… Don’t worry… Okay, bye!”

She clicked off the phone and turned to Max, catching him making a yapping gesture with his hands.

“Maria wants us to pick up some charcoal on our way over. I guess they’re planning on grilling out,” she said, looking at Max suspiciously. “What were you doing?”

Max tried to look innocent. “What do you mean?”

She gave him a pointed look. “What were you doing with your hands?”

Max smiled sheepishly. “Oh, that… well, Maria has a tendency to yammer on about stuff, so…”

Liz began to laugh. “Oh, I’m soo gonna tell her you said that!” she teased.

“You wouldn’t dare!” Max proclaimed assuredly.

Liz raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? Shows how well you know me, Mr. Evans,” she bantered back.

Max grinned. “Oh, I think I know you better than you think,” he replied.

Liz cocked her head. “How so?”

Max’s eyes twinkled. “Well, for one, I know you love to roast marshmallows until the whole outside is burnt…”

Liz smiled. “That’s the only way to eat them,” she said airily.

Max smiled. “And I know that you prefer the brown M’M’s to all the other colors because you think it has less artificial flavoring and therefore tastes more like chocolate…”

“Yeah, can you believe they stole that idea for that movie? I should have sued,” Liz joked. “Go ahead, continue,” she waved her hand, totally caught up in the game.

Max took a deep breath, did he have the nerve? “And I know…” he began, looking deep into her eyes… “that you are incredibly sweet and beautiful...”

The smile on Liz’s face disappeared as Max’s words sunk in. Suddenly the game wasn’t a joke anymore.

“Max…” she started. “I better go,” she said softly, unable to meet his eyes. She didn’t know what to think.

Max nodded his head sadly, her reaction not what he had hoped. “Sure. I’ll see you later.”

Liz forced a smile on her face. “Yeah! I’ll be waiting.”

She met his eyes one last time and they both looked away out of nervousness.

Liz hopped out the Jeep, thanking Max for the ride as she began walking to the Crashdown.

After she was gone, Max banged his head against the steering wheel.

“Nice job, Evans. Why don’t you just get a tattoo on your forehead that says Property of Liz Parker? That wouldn’t scare her half as much as you just did,” he muttered.

Sighing, he started the engine and drove home to get ready for the evening.

<center>Slight NC-17 Warning...</center>

<center>Chapter 6</center>

Liz stepped out of the steam-filled bathroom, wrapping herself in a soft, terry-cloth towel. Heading for the closet, she pulled out the outfit she had chosen to wear that night.

After sliding on a pair of lacy purple underwear and matching bra, she rubbed strawberry lotion on her smooth legs and the rest of her body.

Next she pulled on her favorite pair of jean cut-offs. They were impossibly short, but she liked the way they showed off her legs. She topped it off with a baby blue crop top.

She began to blow-dry her hair, her mind returning to earlier in the afternoon. She and Max had a date… well, not a date, more like a meeting, at the movies this Saturday night.

She personally couldn’t wait. The idea of spending more time with Max left her feeling elated. But on the other hand, she kept picturing Tess in her mind, kissing Max senseless.

That’s when Liz realized the phone was ringing. She turned off her hair dryer and ran to grab the phone, stubbing her toe in the process.

“Ow! Dammit!” she muttered, jumping on one foot while grabbing for the phone.

“Hello?” she muttered through clenched teeth.

“Um… Liz?”

Liz immediately dropped her foot and sat down on her bed. “Max?” she asked, the pain in her toe forgotten.

“Yeah, how did you know?” he asked, his voice sounding surprised.

Because I would know your voice anywhere, she thought automatically. Somehow she didn’t think it would be wise to say that out loud, so she quickly thought up an alternative answer.

Oh, um… caller ID!” she explained, laughing nervously.

“Oh, okay. Liz, listen,” Max began, and Liz braced herself for disappointment.

He must be calling to cancel for tonight. Or worse, for this Saturday.

“I’m going to be a little late picking you up,” Max finished breathlessly.

Liz perked up. He wasn’t cancelling? “Oh, okay. Is everything alright?” she asked in concern.

Max was silent for a moment. When he answered his voice sounded a little… strained. “Yeah... why wouldn’t it be?”

Liz frowned. He sure did sound strange. “Um, no reason. Well, what time will you be here?”

“Give me another twenty minutes,” Max replied, his voice taking on an apologetic tone. “I’m so sorry, Liz. Something just… came up.”

“No problem, Max. Just come whenever you’re ready. Besides, I think Maria’s the one you should be apologizing to,” Liz giggled.

Max groaned over the line. “Oh, yeah. Man she’s gonna kill me for being late! Okay, I’ve gotta go! The sooner we get there with her charcoal the more limbs I will be able to keep.”

Liz laughed again. “Sure thing. I’ll meet you in the Crash?”

“Okay, see you in a few.”

“Bye, Max,” Liz said softly.

“Goodbye, Liz,” Max answered just as softly.

Both of them were reluctant to hang up.

After talking to Max, Liz turned back to the mirror. Her hair was completely dry now.

She grabbed a scrunchie and pulled it back into a ponytail. All she had left to do was put on her make-up, and that would take all of five minutes.

She glanced at the clock. She still had a while before Max showed up. She walked over to the nightstand and picked up the familiar book laying on top.

Opening it, a smile came to her face.

Two young kids smiled back, their faces and bodies covered in dirt as they posed.

The boy had his arm slung around the girl’s shoulders, his dark-hair sticking up every which way from the mud and water. The girl was laughing, pointing a finger at him, a streak of mud running down her small nose.

The next picture was of the two along with a little blonde girl who looked thoroughly disgusted by being covered with mud. Her mouth was open as she yelled at the boy who was trying to give her a hug.

Liz’s smile turned wistful as she looked through the rest of the pictures from that summer.

She had been so happy.

As she looked at the last picture where the little boy was placing a kiss on the brown-haired girl’s cheek, Liz began to wonder.

Would she ever have the chance to feel that way again?

<center>********************************</center>

Max knocked tentatively on the door leading to Liz’s apartment. He tried to calm his frazzled nerves as he prepared himself for the possible event that one of Liz’s parents may answer the door.

He wanted to make a good impression. Especially since he was hoping to be more than friends with their daughter soon.

To his surprise, Liz answered the door, smiling at him in greeting.

“Hey, Max! Come on in, I just need to grab my purse,” she said warmly, opening the door wider so that he could step in.

Max nodded, the words caught in his throat as he stared at her.

She was wearing a silky yellow sundress that was so short Max was sure she wouldn’t be able to sit down without giving everyone a full glimpse of what was underneath.

She smiled again, and turned to walk back into the house, giving Max a view of her backside.

His mouth fell open.

Oh. God.

She wasn’t wearing any underwear, either, as Max could tell from the smooth cheeks that peeked out at him tantalizingly from under the dress.

“Uh, Liz…” he began, his body becoming increasingly more tense as he stared at her curves.

Liz turned towards him, cocking her head. “Are you coming?”

Definitely about to, Max thought wryly as he stepped into the house.

“I’ll just be a minute,” Liz replied, wandering into the kitchen, leaving Max alone in the living room.

He stuck his hands in his pockets, taking in his surroundings while trying to will his body back under control.

One part of him was refusing to obey, as evident from the bulge in the front of his jeans.

“So… where are your parents?” Max blurted out, needing to say something… anything to break the quiet.

“Oh, they left this morning for Albequerque. Some kind of weekend thing for the restaurant,” Liz called from somewhere.

Max nodded, then his eyes bugged out. Wait. They were by themselves? Oh God, he so didn’t need to hear that…

“Besides, do you think I would have invited you here if I thought we would be interrupted?” Liz added, and Max looked over to the kitchen doorway.

And his heart stopped.

Liz was leaning against the doorway, a lazy yet seductive smile on her beautiful face as her eyes burned into his.

Wearing nothing but smooth, sun-kissed skin.

Max knew he was staring but he couldn’t help himself. His eyes slid from the perky breasts that were topped with dusky, ripe nipples, down her smooth flat stomach, to the soft crevice between her thighs.

He felt a tightening in his groin and his mouth went dry. The words Oh, God kept flying through his mind as she stepped forward.

“What’s wrong, Max? You don’t like what you see?” Liz purred, her lower lip poking out in a delectable pout.

She wanted him to say something? Did she actually think he would be able to answer her?

“Liz…” he croaked out as she reached him, and his eyes dropped as her finger slid down her chest lazily, stroking her rigid nipple.

She kneaded each breast in turn, offering him the plump mounds like a sacrifice. “Do you want to touch me?” she asked silkily.

“Liz… what are you doing?” Max finally managed to get out.

She smiled again and took another step closer, and Max wondered idly if she could hear the pounding of his blood.

“I missed you,” she whispered in his ear, her tongue snaking out to gently lick his earlobe. “Didn’t you miss me?”

Max groaned. "You know I did," he answered harshly, caught in the silky web of passion. The feel of her tongue on him was doing wonders to his already hard flesh.

Liz smiled in satisfaction and stepped back, walking over to the couch where she laid herself down and looked back up at Max.

“Show me,” she demanded.

Max couldn’t believe his ears.

She beckoned him over, a seductive smile on her face. “I want you to make love to me, Max Evans. I want to feel you inside me…”

Max lost his control as he flung himself upon her, his tongue seeking out the sweet peaks of her breasts.

Liz moaned as she flung her head back, melting under Max’s minstrations.

Max moaned himself as he tasted Liz’s skin. He licked the valley in between her breasts desperately, delighting as goosebumps appeared under her skin.

“Oh God, Max…” she whispered, her fingers sliding through his hair as his lips trailed over her breast and then grazed her sensitive nipple.

“Yes! Oh, God… don’t stop…” she thrashed, holding his head closer as he began to suckle her, his tongue flicking the hard nub against the roof of his mouth.

A little groan escaped him as he went to work on her other breast. He couldn’t believe this was happening.

For years he had dreamed of seeing Liz again and what he would do if he did, but never, in his wildest imagination did he dream it would be this sweet…

His eyes fell open as he suddenly felt a hand sliding down his pants, grasping his hardness.

“Liz!” he gasped, feeling his hard cock twitch at her touch. His tongue trailed down her stomach, licking and kissing as he felt her fumble with the button on his jeans.

She unsnapped it and jerked his zipper down along with his jeans and boxers. He sucked in a breath as he was released from the confines of his clothing.

Liz reached up and slid his shirt off as he sat partway up and their eyes met in a blazing gaze.

“I need you now,” they both said at the same time, and Max lifted her in his arms as he laid her longways on the couch.

Liz whimpered as she felt his warmth momentarily leave her, but was satisfied when he immediately laid himself above her.

She gasped as his strong body fit to the contours of her own, and ran her hands over his back, purring in contentment at the feel of his strong muscles.

Max hissed as his throbbing erection came into contact with her wet center. He glanced down at Liz to find her moaning softly as she rubbed herself against him.

Max gulped and slid himself into her hot, welcoming core.

They both moaned aloud.

“Keep going,” Liz said, arching her back against the couch.

He began thrusting inside her tight walls, each time receiving a loud moan from Liz and a gutteral groan from deep within him.

“Harder! Give it to me harder, Max!” Liz panted and Max grunted as he sped up the pace.

He pumped for all he was worth into her silken walls, feeling himself nearing the edge.

He wasn’t going to last much longer.

In desperation, he reached down and rubbed the swollen bud at the apex of Liz’s sex as he pumped furiously.

Closer, he was so close….

Beep, beep, beep!

Max jerked awake at the sound of his alarm clock going off wildly.

“What the hell?” he thought to himself. He could still feel Liz all around him and he glanced down and saw a tent in his pants.

Shit. It had only been a dream.

A great dream at that, but still a dream.

Hegroaned, running a hand through his hair as he blinked his eyes, adjusting to the dark that now filled the room.

Wait. Dark?

He looked at the clock and cursed when he read that there was only about ten minutes until he was supposed to pick up Liz.

How long had his alarm been going off, anyway?

When he had gotten home, Isabel had been on her way out to Alex’s, saying they’d meet everyone later on.

Max then remembered reading the letter his parents had left them, stating that they had had to leave for Carlsbad to settle a case and would be gone until the following week.

He had decided to take advantage of the quiet house and take a short nap before getting ready to go pick up Liz.

He had gotten much more than that.

Max couldn’t remember the last time he had felt this sexually frustrated.

Suddenly, he realized he had better call and let Liz know he wasn’t going to be able to pick her up on time.

He reached over and dialed her number, taking deep breaths so he wouldn’t sound too strained over the phone.

After a few rings, a female voice answered.

“Hello?”

Max swallowed, hearing her voice. It reminded him of his dream…

“Um… Liz?” he stammered.

“Max?” she answered right away, as if she was expecting his call.

“Yeah, how did you know?” he asked, trying to get his mind off the image of Liz naked.

“Um, caller ID,” Liz answered, bringing Max back to the conversation.

“Oh, okay. Liz, listen…” he began, remembering his reason for calling her, “I’m going to be a little late picking you up.”

Liz paused, then answered. “Oh, okay. Is everything alright?”

Max’s breath caught. What did she mean by that? Why would she think something was wrong? Did she know? No, how could she? “Yeah,” he answered quickly, his voice strangled. “Why wouldn’t it be?”

“Um, no reason,” Liz replied. “Well, what time will you be here?”

Max sighed in relief. She wasn’t going to push the subject. Gratefully he answered, “Give me another twenty minutes. I’m so sorry, Liz. Something just… came up,” he added, glancing down at his lap.

They continued to talk for a moment, then they hung up and Max looked back at his erection.

“What am I going to do with you?” he muttered, standing up and walking towards his bathroom to take a shower.

<center>************************************</center>

Liz bit her lip as she glanced over at Max, who was driving them to Michael’s apartment. She studied him in the dim lights cast by the twinkling street lamps and store-fronts of Main Street.

His eyes were trained on the road ahead and his mouth set in a tight line. As she glanced down at his hands, she realized his knuckles were practically turning white from the death grip he had on the steering wheel.

She frowned. Max had hardly spoken two words to her since picking her up in the CrashDown.

Had she done something? She racked her brain trying to remember whether or not she had said something that might have upset him.

She came up with nothing.

Crossing her legs, she turned to Max. “Max… are you all right?”

He swerved slightly as she spoke and then cursed as he regained control of the Jeep. “What?”

Liz raised an eyebrow. “I asked if you were okay. I mean… I didn’t… do anything…?” she trailed off, her eyes beginning to tear as he still refused to look at her.

Her words broke through the fuzziness in Max’s head and he shot her a surprised look. “What? Oh, God, no Liz! No… you didn’t do anything.”

Liz released her breath, relaxing a little. “Oh, okay. Well, then what’s the matter? You seem a little... tense.”

Max swallowed, the image of his dream popping back into his head. “Nothing, I was just thinking about… football. You know, we play East Roswell this Friday and it’s a really important game for the season,” he finished lamely.

Liz seemed to accept his answer, as she nodded and turned back to look out the window.

Max spared her another look, his eyes lingering on her shapely legs that were exposed from her shorts.

God. Did she have to wear that? After his dream that afternoon, Max had had to take a cold shower to get himself under control enough to go pick Liz up.

But upon walking into the Crashdown, all his control slipped away as he caught sight of her leaning against the bar, swinging her hips to the music playing in the café.

He still couldn't dispel the image of way her tiny shirt had ridden up, exposing a glimpse of her midriff. And her shorts…. he wasn’t even going to dwell on that thought if he planned on making it all night without attacking her.

The thing that was driving him the craziest was the innocence in which she carried herself. It was as if she had no idea how incredibly sexy she was.

When they pulled into the parking lot of Michael’s apartment complex, Liz hopped out of the Jeep, stretching her arms languidly over her head.

Max stepped out, almost falling on the pavement as he stared at the expanse of smooth skin that rode up as she did so.

She brought her arms back down, and reached to pull out the bag of charcoal from the backseat.

He swallowed and shook his head, trying to get himself back under control. Finally, he walked over to stand next to Liz and helped her get the grocery bag to take it inside.

“So… this seems pretty nice,” Liz said, taking in the cozy building nestled in a grove of trees. “I bet Michael likes living here.”

“Yeah… he has to work two jobs to pay for it, but he says it’s worth it to have a nice place to bring Maria,” Max said, then blushed as he realized how that sounded. “I mean… not like that…”

Liz laughed, reaching out and lightly touching Max’s arm. “It’s okay, Max. I know what you meant. And I agree. It seems perfectly quaint here,” she sighed, smiling at him.

Max smiled back as they walked up the steps to Michael’s apartment floor.

He knocked on the door and it was immediately opened by a scowling Maria.

“Well, it’s about time, Max! Where have you two been? We wanted to start the grill a half-hour ago!” she declared, her hands on her hips.

Max rolled his eyes. “Chill out, Maria. I ran a little late. Besides, you could have gone and gotten the charcoal yourself and then I would have been here earlier,” he pointed out, smiling sweetly.

Liz giggled and Maria sighed. “Whatever, just get in here you two! I am ready to par-tay!”

Liz followed Max into the small, but comfy living room. “So what’s for dinner?” she asked, raising her voice to be heard over the Metallica music coming from the radio outside on the balcony.

“That would be hamburgers a’la Guerin,” Michael announced, walking inside from the balcony.

He spied the bag in Max’s hands and grinned. “Ah… now we can begin! That meat has been marinating for about six hours, so it’ll be nice and juicy!”

Liz watched as the two guys headed outside to start the grill. She turned to Maria, raising an impressed eyebrow. “Wow… so he can cook?”

Maria’s eyes twinkled as she nodded. “Among other talents…” she said, and the two girls burst into giggles.

“Hey! Are we missing the party?” a voice broke in, and the two girls looked over to see Alex coming out of the back bedroom carrying Isabel on his back.

“Hey Liz! When did you get here? Is my brother here, too?” Isabel asked, hopping off Alex as they reached the two girls.

Liz nodded, smiling at the blonde. “Yeah, he gave me a ride.”

Isabel raised a perfectly arched eyebrow, glancing at Maria in interest. “Oh, really? He did…”

“Hey Liz! How’s it going?” Alex asked in a friendly tone. “Had any close encounters yet?”

Liz shook her head. “Nah… but it’s only seven o-clock!” she said brightly.

Isabel gave them a weird look. “What are you two talking about? Aliens?”

She gave an involuntary shiver as she thought about it. “Ick.”

<center>*****************************</center>

The gang laughed and talked together as they ate around Michael’s living room.

Liz was having the best time she could remember. She smiled as Maria began gossiping about the latest news around West Roswell High.

She glanced over to the left of her and found Max gazing at her, a faraway look on his handsome face. She smiled at him and his eyes widened as his face flushed slightly.

“So, these burgers are great, Michael!” Liz said enthusiastically as she took another bite of the delicious sandwich.

“Yeah, all those years of being a cook at the Crashdown did do something for me, I guess,” he joked and everyone laughed.

“Hey, guys! Who wants to go swimming?” Maria asked, her brows wiggling up and down.

A chorus of the affirmative filled the room as everyone ran to their cars to pull out their bathing suits.

Liz turned to Maria. “Oh, I didn’t know there was a pool… I didn’t – “

Maria silenced her with a hand. “Don’t worry about it, chica! I brought an extra for you! I knew Max would probably forget to mention it to you.”

Liz smiled in thanks as Maria left the room, returning with a black bikini that made Liz’s eyes pop.

“Maria! I can’t wear this!” Liz gasped, holding out the skimpy suit. “I don’t even think there would be a point to it!”

“Oh, come on Liz! I happen to think it would look great on you, with your coloring.”

Liz frowned uncertainly. “You really think so?”

Maria smiled broadly. “Oh yeah! Go try it on.”

Liz nodded in resignation and headed for the bathroom. Once inside, she shed her clothing and began to pull on the teeny top.

It was a triangle cup that barely covered anything worth covering, but Liz had to admit that it did appear to heighten her cleavage.

It had a single string that tied at her back and Liz carefully knotted it in case something were to happen.

As much as she liked her new friends, she just wasn’t ready to show them the bod.

After pulling on the even skimpier bottoms, she checked herself in the mirror. Hmm… maybe Maria was right.

A knock on the door sounded and Liz opened it to find Maria waiting. Her eyes widened and a smile broke out over her face as she looked at Liz.

“Oh my God, girl! Max is gonna flip!”

Liz frowned, her heart racing. “Max? What do you mean? Why would you think…”

Maria gave her a knowing look. “Liz, I know you like Max. You don’t have to hide it from me. And I am totally in support! I think Max really likes you, too, but he’s just too shy to say anything.”

Liz’s mind was racing from Maria’s words. She didn’t bother denying what Maria said – it was true. Well, about her anyway. “But, what about Tess?” she asked, biting her lip.

Maria snorted. “What about her? Max doesn’t like her! The only reason he's still with her is because she would follow him around if he broke it off!”

Liz’s brow furrowed. “Follow him? Isn’t that a little…”

“Psycho?” Maria offered and Liz nodded. “Yeah, but I wouldn’t worry about Tess. She’ll be out of the picture by tomorrow if I have anything to say about it.”

Liz shook her head. “No, Maria. If Max really wants to be with me, I want him to come to me on his own. I don’t want it to be an elaborate set-up.”

Maria looked at the girl, impressed. Here she was, offering to help her get Max and she was turning her down! Maria couldn’t think of any girl in Roswell who would do that. Which just confirmed her beliefs.

Liz Parker was really someone special.

“Well, we’d better get out there so Prince Charming can get a good look at you,” Maria teased.

Liz blushed. “I’m not sure I can do this, Maria. I’ve never worn something this…”

“Sexy?”

“Actually I was going to say small. But I guess you’re right.”

“Don’t worry about it, Liz. You look great. I just better not catch Michael staring at you or it’s gonna be a long night for my little Mikey G!” Maria joked, wrapping her arm around the girl who was quickly becoming her best friend.

Liz giggled and the two headed for the front door of Michael’s apartment.

They found everyone else already in the pool, the three guys ganging up on Isabel as they tried to dunk her.

Isabel shrieked and cried something about not getting her hair wet.

“Hey Iz! Looks like you could use a hand there!” Maria called, alerting everyone to their presence.

Max’s heart stopped as he saw Liz standing in what looked like nothing more than a pair of teeny underwear.

“Whoa… Liz, looking good!” Alex teased, earning himself a thump in the head from Isabel.

Liz smiled shyly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Well, it’s Maria’s suit…”

“Yeah, I thought that looked familiar,” Michael said, wiggling his eyebrows at his girlfriend.

Maria rolled her eyes and dove into the pool, resurfacing next to Michael. “Come on in, Liz! The water’s great!” she called, then was distracted as Michael came up behind her and pulled her flush against his chest.

Liz bit her lip as she glanced at Max, and her legs began to tremble from the sizzling look in his eyes.

He gazed at her hungrily, his eyes sliding over her slender body leaving trails of fire in their wake.

“Hi…” he murmured, his eyes meeting hers again with an intensity that made Liz’s heart thump.

“Hi,” she said softly, unable to break their gaze. God… why was he looking at her like that?

“Aren’t you coming in?” he asked, his voice husky, deep.

She nodded and walked slowly over to the edge of the pool. She stepped carefully down the ladder, feeling the cool water surround her languidly.

Once in the pool, she turned and faced Max, who had waded closer to her. “So… you forgot to tell me about the whole swimming thing,” she laughed nervously.

Max stepped closer, his eyes devouring her. “Must have slipped my mind…” he murmured.

Liz nodded, her eyes falling on the opposite end of the pool where Alex and Isabel were presently in each other’s arms, kissing passionately.

A similar scene was unfolding in the far corner of the pool between Michael and Maria.

Liz swallowed and chanced another look in Max’s direction. He had the strangest look on his face.

His lips were curled in an almost feral smile and his normally golden eyes burned like fire.

She felt as if she might melt under his intense gaze.

“Are you having a good time?” he asked, his voice a gentle caress to Liz’s ears.

God, he's too sexy, Liz thought as she stared in appreciation at the man in front of her.

His short hair was sticking up slightly from the water and gave him a disheveled appearance. Her gaze drifted lower to his broad, tanned chest and tapered waist that was visible above the water.

She sucked in a breath at the sight of the hard, definite muscles. Oh good lord…

“Um… I’m having fun,” she responded absently. Not as much fun as I could be having, her body screamed in protest.

Max lips curled further. “I’m very pleased to hear that.”

Liz could hardly believe that this was the same sweet, shy guy in front of her. Not that she minded.

Max didn’t fully understand his actions, either. All he knew was that the moment he had caught sight of Liz wearing that bathing suit, his mind had gone on overload.

He was acting purely on instinct. And all his instincts told him to take this gorgeous creature in his arms and show her the meaning of true passion.

He took another step towards her, practically backing her up against the side of the pool. “Liz…” he breathed, his eyes burning into hers.

Her eyes closed as his face came closer to her own. She could feel his warm breath on her face and she gasped in surprise when she felt his lips tentatively cover her own.

His lips felt cool from the water and yet they were intoxicating as they brushed her own. A small moan of protest escaped her throat as he pulled back.

Her eyes fluttered open and she found herself staring into Max’s questioning gaze.

“I’m sorry, Liz. I didn’t mean to – “

Liz cut him off by wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling his lips back to hers. They both moaned as their mouths met again, this time with more insistence.

Max pulled her closer to him, one hand buried in her hair while his other rested lightly on her hip.

Liz gasped as she felt his tongue begging entrance into her mouth. She complied and almost melted when she it caressed the insides, sliding over her own, tangling together.

The kiss became more passionate, their arms tightening around each other as they lost themselves.

A sudden shriek brought them out of their sexual haze and they broke apart, gasping for breath.

Alex! I told you I didn’t want my hair to get wet!” Isabel shouted, glaring at her boyfriend in anger.

Alex smiled sheepishly at her, backing away from the menacing expression on her face. “I’m sorry Izzy… it wasn’t my fault…”

Max gazed down at Liz, his eyes clouded with passion as he struggled to regain control of his body.

Liz, too, was having a hard time breathing. She stared at Max, not believing what had just taken place.

She had kissed Max.

Suddenly, the realization sunk in and her eyes widened in panic. Oh God... what had she done?

Max watched as Liz’s expression went from dazed to… disgusted. He frowned, reaching out to touch her.

“Liz?” he asked, and was shocked when she jumped away from his touch like it had burned.

Liz couldn’t look at him. She couldn’t believe she had been so stupid! What had happened to her? The guy still had a girlfriend and here she was, throwing herself at him like a shameless hussy!

“I… I’m sorry, Max,” she whispered,. “I don’t know what got into me.”

Max’s face fell as she began to apologize, avoiding his eyes as she turned to the ladder. “What? Why are you apologizing to me? Liz?” he asked desperately.

Liz froze at the tone in his voice, and she turned back around to look at him. Her heart jumped at the confused look in his eyes.

“Liz, about what happened…”

“It was a mistake, Max,” she answered quickly. “You… have a girlfriend. I had no right…”

She gulped, tears filling her eyes as she watched the hurt look pass over his face. But she knew she was doing the right thing.

After a moment’s silence, she turned and headed up the ladder, grabbing a towel and wrapping herself off as she headed back to the apartment.

Max stared after her. He knew what he had to do. And as soon as he got to school tomorrow, he wasn’t going to waste any time.

This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot. Liz Parker wasn’t going to know what hit her…

<center>Chapter 7</center>

Liz held her head high as she walked through the busy halls of West Roswell, ignoring the stares and whispers that were thrown in her direction. Everyone was in an uproar over the new girl who had captured the attention of Max Evans.

Liz herself was trying not to think about it, especially after the incident at Michael’s apartment the night before. Whenever she did, she tended to end up in tears.

Running off after what she now referred to in her mind as The Kiss, she had avoided him at all costs, begging a ride home from a confused Maria.

Maria had inquired why she didn’t just leave with Max, but Liz had refused to say anything. Maria had finally changed the subject after seeing she had no intentions of talking.

Max called seven times after she had gotten home, and Liz had finally had to unplug her phone, lest she give into the overwhelming temptation to pick up.

She just couldn’t face him yet. Not after making a complete fool of herself by throwing herself at him.

The thought still made her cringe. What had she been thinking? To go after a guy who wasn’t available? She had become one of those girls she despised.

Well, she wouldn’t let it happen again, that she had promised herself. No matter how much she felt for Max, as long as he was with Tess she was not going to give herself the opportunity for temptation.

Thus, the avoidance tactic.

Of course, since she was his lab partner first period, she wasn’t sure how long she could avoid him for.

Oh well, she would only talk to him about biology. She wouldn’t laugh with him, or let herself get caught up in the moment when he would look at her with those incredible eyes…

She groaned as the image of Max from the night before filled her mind. She could still feel his lips on hers. The way they caressed and fit hers perfectly, as if they were made to match.

Who was she kidding? One molten look from Max Evans and she would go up in flames.

She began to wonder what Max thought about the whole thing. When she'd left, she had seen the hurt and confusion on his handsome face.

And then he had called her all night.

But after getting some sleep and time to think, was he regretting it? Did he wish he had never made the mistake of kissing her?

As she rounded the corner, the answer to that question stared her in the face.

At the end of the hall stood Max Evans. And wrapped around him in what seemed to be an intimate moment, was Tess Harding.

<center>**********************************</center>

Max strode through the school doors, a look of pure determination on his face.

He ignored all the greetings and comments sent his way as he headed towards his destination. As he approached Liz’s locker, he noticed she was nowhere in sight. Sighing, he realized she was probably still avoiding him. No matter, he would just wait for her.

Planting himself next to her locker, he crossed his arms and glanced up and down the hallway.

There was no way she was getting past him again. She had gotten a ride home from Maria and avoided all his phone calls, but she would not get away from him here.

He had to talk to her. Had to let her know how he felt about her. He could sense the confusion and disgust coming from her after she realized what they’d done the night before, and he wanted to lay those fears to rest.

He wanted to tell her he loved her.

A female voice entered his thoughts, but not the one he was expecting or hoping for.

He looked up to find Tess walking towards him, a smile on her face. He groaned inwardly at his luck, then stiffened his back. He might as well go ahead and kill two birds with one stone.

Turning towards her, he grimaced as Tess walked up and wrapped her arms around his waist, practically smothering him in an attempt to get close.

“Good morning, Maxie,” she purred, running her hands over his body.

Max stopped her hand just as it was reaching to cup the front of his jeans. Shaking his head, he said, “I need to talk to you.”

She pouted as he stepped out of her embrace. “What is it, Maxie?” she asked, taking a step closer.

Max sighed, wishing he had never gotten himself in this position. “My name’s Max. Not Maxie,” he said harshly. “How many times have I told you that, Tess?”

Tess looked a little taken aback, then smiled again. “I thought you were just teasing, sweetie. It’s just a pet name.” Giggling, she once again attempted to crawl into his arms. Max backed away, causing Tess to trip over her ridiculously tall heels.

Ack! God, Max!! What did you do that for?” she snapped, trying to regain her balance with grace and failing miserably.

“Look Tess. I don’t know what I was thinking when I agreed to go out with you, but I do know I can’t do this any longer. It’s over,” Max said, his voice resonating with finality.

Her eyes widened and she shook her head. “You… you don’t mean that!”

Several people stopped to watch as the scene progressed.

Max smirked. “Oh, but I do, Tess. Maybe if you weren’t so blind as to what’s actually going on, you would have realized by now that I don't like you.”

Someone snickered and Tess’s eyes flamed. “This is about that bitch isn’t it!” she accused angrily. “I saw the way you were looking at her. She’s no good for you, Max! She’s nothing but a stupid slut with no taste in clothing!”

“No, that would be you, Tess,” a voice called out and everyone turned to see Maria and Isabel walk up, smirking at the petite blonde.

Tess glared at Maria, then turned back to Max. “You’re going to regret this, Max. So help me God, you and that little bitch!”

“I wouldn’t call her that if I were you,” Isabel said icily, stepping up to stand next to Max, offering her support. “My brother has put up with your shit long enough, and as far as I’m concerned, so have I. Therefore, I’m happy to say we won’t be needing you anymore during cheering practice.”

What? You… you can’t drop me! I’m the captain!” Tess screamed shrilly, blue eyes glittering with anger.

Co-captain. And since I’ve been on the squad longer than you, I have more authority. And I choose to have you dropped,” Isabel smiled.

Tess shrieked, causing everyone to laugh.

“Shut up! All of you!” she snapped, turning in circles as she threatened the crowd. Turning back to Max, she said, “This is your last chance, Max. Then I’m walking away.”

Max smiled and wagged his fingers. “Bye Tess. Oh, and please… try not to talk to me ever again.”

Tess let out another shriek and glared at Isabel and Maria. “You will all pay! I will get you for this!”

“You and your little dog, too!” Maria called as Tess stormed off, and the three cracked up.

After the laughter died down, Maria glanced to where everyone was still staring at them with wide eyes. “What, what, what? There’s nothing to see here!”

Reluctantly, everyone began dispersing, shooting awed looks at Max over their shoulders.

Maria turned back and grinned at Max, slinging an arm through his. “So… how does it feel to be single again?”

Max grinned back. “Pretty damn good. Although, I’m hoping not to be single for very long,” he added impishly.

Maria and Isabel looked at each other and squealed. They turned back to Max and said at the same time, “Go get her, Max!”

Max saluted them, and took off in the direction of his first period class. There was no way he was going to let anything stand in his way now.

<center>*********************************</center>

Liz wiped her eyes and glanced at herself in the bathroom mirror. Her eyes were slightly red, but unless you were really looking you couldn’t tell she had been crying.

After seeing Max and Tess together again, a part of her had withered as she realized the truth she had been trying so hard to deny.

Max didn’t love her. He was with Tess, and that didn’t seem like it was going to change anytime soon.

She grabbed her books and resigned herself to the fact that she and Max would not be together as she walked out the bathroom, and almost ran into Kyle Valenti.

“Whoa… hey, Liz. Where’s the fire?” he teased, reaching out to steady her.

“Kyle! I am so sorry, I really need to watch where I’m going,” she laughed, then the smile faded as she remembered the last time she had run into someone.

Kyle noticed her downcast expression. “Hey… what’s wrong? You look like you lost your best friend.”

Liz looked up into his concerned green eyes and forced a smile. “I… I’m fine. Thank you for asking… but I’m fine.”

Kyle didn’t buy it for a second, but he could tell she didn’t want to talk about it, so he changed the subject. “So, how’s life in Roswell treating you?”

Liz groaned and Kyle smirked. “That bad, huh? Oh well, don’t worry. It gets worse,” he smiled and Liz laughed despite herself.

They talked for a little while longer and Liz found herself thoroughly enjoying his company.

He was funny and cheerful and Liz couldn’t deny he was good-looking. He may not be as sexy as a certain someone she was not going to think about, but he had a boyish charm that made him appealing.

“So… listen, Liz. I know you don’t really know me very well and everything… but I… I would really like to change that,” Kyle said suddenly. “I mean… you seem like a really nice girl and I would just really like the chance to get to know you better.”

Liz was surprised into silence. Was Kyle asking her out?

He continued on, his voice taking on an uncertain tone. “I mean, it doesn’t have to be anything serious… unless you want it to be. We could just hang out, go to the movies or something…”

“Are you asking me out, Kyle?” Liz interrupted, and Kyle’s face reddened.

“No! I mean… well, yeah, I guess so. Unless you don’t want to go out with me. I mean, why would you? Like I said, you don’t know me and – “

Liz smiled as he continued to ramble. He really was sweet. And she felt she would have fun with him. Which is why she finally placed a hand on his arm and spoke, “Kyle, I’d love to go on a date with you.”

Kyle broke off and looked at her. Did he hear her correctly? He studied her smiling face and all he saw was genuine interest. He smiled back, “Really?”

Liz nodded. “Sure… I mean, after all. How else would we get to know each other?”

Kyle nodded, and a huge smile broke out over his face. “Great! How about this Saturday? We can go see that new horror movie. Unless you’d rather go see something else?”

Liz hesitated. She was supposed to go see a movie with Max, Saturday. Of course, they were just going as friends. To catch up. And from the way he was all over Tess this morning, Liz didn’t think he’d mind if she took Kyle instead.

Turning to Kyle, she smiled. “Saturday’s fine. Meet me at the Crashdown at eight, okay?”

Kyle nodded and then smiled broadly. He had a date with Liz Parker.

Not that Kyle Valenti never had dates. Actually quite the opposite. Kyle was almost as popular with the ladies as Max Evans. Okay, so that was stretching it, but he did date a lot.

But he had never felt an instant attraction to anyone like he had the moment he’d seen Liz Parker.

Not only was she beautiful, but she seemed very nice as well.

Kyle only hoped the rumors he’d heard about her and Max were wrong. Because Kyle wanted Liz for himself. And he certainly wasn’t about to let Max ruin it.

As if to stake his claim, he reached over and slung his arm over Liz as they headed to class. She gave him a surprised look, but didn’t pull away.

Kyle smiled inwardly and pulled her a little closer.

Yes, Liz Parker was his and he wanted everyone to know it.

Liz glanced at Kyle and wondered if she should ask him to remove his arm. After all, they hadn’t even been on a date yet!

But then she realized that it didn’t matter. Even if they hadn't been on their date, it was inevitable, and she guessed it was okay for Kyle to show affection.

As long as he didn’t try anything else, she would let him hold her.

As they walked on to class, she didn’t see the pair of amber eyes watching their every move, hurt etching across his handsome face.

<center>*********************************</center>

Liz glanced around her first period class, eyes crinkling in worry as she searched the room for him.

She had entered the classroom expecting to find Max already there waiting, but to her surprise there was no sign of him and the last bell had rung ten minutes ago.

Luckily, Miss Hardy was late again, so he still had time to arrive. But his absence had Liz worried.

Her eyes met Kyle’s and he smiled brightly at her. Liz forced herself to smile back, despite her concern for Max.

Just then, the door opened and Max walked in. She felt a wave of relief wash over her until his eyes met hers.

She almost gasped at the hurt that emanated from his golden gaze, and the bleak expression on his face as he walked over and took his seat next to her.

At the sight of him in pain, Liz forgot her vow to distance herself from him. She gently laid a hand on his arm.

“Max? Are you alright?”

He turned towards her, his gaze penetrating. “You never answered my calls,” he replied softly, so that Liz barely heard what he said.

But she did, and guilt filled her as he continued to stare at her with his wounded puppy-dog expression. “I… I’m sorry Max. I know I owe you an explanation…”

“I broke up with Tess,” he blurted out, looking away from her and fixing his gaze on the wall instead.

Liz gasped, her mind spinning in confusion. He broke up with Tess? “You… did? But why?”

He turned back towards her, a ghost of a smile on his lips. “You know why,” he murmured and her heart swelled at the pure affection shining in his eyes.

She didn’t know what to say. A part of her was jumping in happiness, another part of her wanted to kiss him senseless, while yet another part of her needed time to think.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

“Hey, Liz. About Saturday night… I was thinking we could go to dinner before the movie. What do you think?” Kyle asked, and the color drained from her face as she looked up to find Kyle hovering over her and Max’s lab table.

She glanced at Max and saw him looking at her in devastation.

You… you’re going out with Kyle Saturday?” Max asked, the hurt in his voice evident.

Kyle smirked at Max as he spoke before Liz could answer. “Yeah, we’re going to go see Dawn of the Dead.”

Max took a ragged breath and nodded, looking away. Liz felt the tears welling in her eyes. She turned to Kyle and said shortly, “I’ll talk to you later, Kyle.”

Kyle hesitated at her tone, then shrugged and headed back to his own desk.

She turned back to Max. "Max..."

He held up a hand to stop her awkward explanation. “No need to explain, Liz. I understand… after all, why would you want to hang out with a… friend… “he almost choked on the words, “when you could be with the one you really like?”

Liz frowned. “No, Max. It’s not like that. I just thought… I mean, you and Tess…”

He looked up and the firm look in his eyes snared her. “There was never any me and Tess, Liz. I never liked her. I’ve been in love with someone else my entire life.”

Her eyes widened at this confession, her mind filling with a million questions. But before she could speak, Miss Hardy burst into the room.

Max held her gaze for a long minute and then looked away and concentrated on the lesson being taught.

Liz kept looking at him throughout the period, thinking about everything she wanted to say to him after the class ended, when the bell rang.

Max stood and gathered his books, glancing quickly at Liz as he headed out the door. She grabbed her bag in an attempt to follow him when she felt an arm slung around her shoulders.

She looked over in annoyance to find Kyle smiling at her.

“I’ll walk you to your next class,” he offered and Liz stifled a groan as she glanced down the hallway to find Max already gone.

Sighing, she extricated herself from Kyle’s grip. “Listen Kyle. Just because we have a date this weekend doesn’t mean I’m ready to have a relationship,” she began, making sure to look him in the eyes.

Kyle looked taken aback as he tried not to appear hurt. “Oh… well, that’s all I wanted too, Liz,” he lied.

She stared at him doubtfully. “Are you sure? I don’t want to hurt you Kyle, but I’m just not ready for a commitment yet.”

At least not from you, she thought sadly.

Kyle forced a smile. “Yeah, Liz. I’m just looking to have a good time. Don’t worry. We’ll keep it casual.”

Liz smiled, feeling bad that she had to say that to him. But she couldn’t have Kyle walking around like he owned her. “Great. I’ll see you later?”

“Yeah, later,” Kyle echoed, and Liz forced a bright smile before heading down the hall and becoming lost in the crowd.

Kyle stared after her, his heart aching as he realized she didn’t really want him. Sure, she liked him as a friend, but apparently nothing more.

As he thought back to the exchange between Liz and Max before he had walked up, his eyes flared.

Evans.

This was all his fault. Somehow, he had gotten to Liz and now she was fawning all over him.

Kyle frowned angrily. Max Evans already had the admiration of every girl in the school. Plus, he had a girlfriend. What did he need Liz for? Kyle could only think of one thing and it made his blood boil.

A protective sense arose in him as he pictured Max taking advantage of a sweet and innocent Liz.

No way in hell would he allow that to happen.

He really cared for Liz and he would not allow some over-sexed jock to take advantage of her.

Kyle made a promise to himself then and there. He would keep an eye out on Evans. And if he so much as flashed a seductive smile in Liz’s direction, Kyle would beat the living shit out of him.

“She what?”

Max cringed at Maria’s voice, and several people stopped to stare at them curiously.

Everyone had heard about what had gone down that morning between Max and Tess and were intrigued to see if it would happen again.

“Max, are you sure? I mean, Liz and Kyle…” Isabel trailed off as she stared at Max uncertainly.

She knew Liz couldn’t like Kyle. She knew it with every ounce of her being. So Max had to be mistaken.

But from her brother's miserable expression, Isabel knew something had happened to make him believe it.

“Listen, I know what I saw, okay?” he snapped. Then he sighed. “Besides, she pretty much confirmed it when he walked over and asked her to dinner.”

Maria was busy sniffing a vial of cedar oil. “Kyle? Kyle Valenti? No, no, no. No way!

Isabel rolled her eyes in annoyance. “Maria! Would you chill out? There’s got to be a good explanation for this. We all know Liz would never agree to go out with Kyle unless she thought she could never have Max.”

They all looked at each other.

Tess.

“But I broke up with her!” Max said, shaking his head in confusion.

Maria smacked him lightly in the head. “But she didn’t know that! It’s so obvious! Kyle’s a rebound guy because she doesn’t think she could have you.”

Max snorted and mumbled, “She could have me even if I was still with Tess.”

“Argh! Don’t you get it? Liz is too good of a person to try to get between you and your… girlfriend. Even if she is in love with you!”

His whole face brightened, his back straightening. “You think she’s in love with me?” he asked in an endearingly hopeful voice.

Isabel and Maria looked at each other and rolled their eyes. “Men,” they mumbled.

“Now that Tess is out of the picture, we need to figure out a way to get rid of Kyle…” Maria mused, tapping her chin with her fingers.

Isabel nodded. “Yeah… wait. I know! What is Liz’s biggest weakness?” she asked excitedly.

Max frowned. “Um… chocolate?”

Isabel gave him an impatient look. “No, moron! You!”

Max nodded, “Oh…” Then he looked confused. "What do you mean?"

“God, sometimes I wonder how you manage to keep a 4.0 GPA,” Isabel muttered. “Anyway… I think Max should just continue pursuing her. Relentlessly. You know… giving her those sexy smirks or whatever makes all those girls grovel at his feet,” Isabel wrinkled her nose in disgust.

Max grinned. “Now that I can do!”

“Okay! So it’s settled! Max will take care of Liz… and you and I will keep an eye out on Kyle. Make sure he doesn’t get in the way of loverboy’s scheme!” Maria giggled.

Max smiled broader. “I like this plan.”

The two girls glanced at his smitten expression and began laughing.

Tess slid further back behind a set of lockers, her blue eyes sparkling with malicious interest. “Hmm… interesting…” she murmured.

<center>*********************************</center>

Liz sighed as she walked towards the quad at lunch hour. She had spent all morning searching for Max and avoiding Kyle.

She was deeply regretting ever saying yes to Kyle. Especially now that it turned out that Max never even liked Tess.

Then she felt guilty. Kyle was a nice guy and he obviously liked her. Why couldn’t she give him a chance?

Because he wasn’t Max.

The answer was that simple.

She sighed again, her pretty face marred by a frown. How come things always seemed to get so messed up?

She continued out the doors until she caught sight of Isabel and Maria at a table in the middle of the lawn.

She walked over to them, a smile on her face. “Hey guys! How’s it going?”

Isabel and Maria looked at each other before smiling.

“Hey, Liz. What have you been up to lately?” Isabel asked sweetly, taking a bite of her low-fat granola bar.

“Oh, nothing much… still trying to find my way around this place,” Liz answered, taking a seat across from the two girls.

“Oh, don’t worry. It gets easier,” Maria assured her.

Just then, the group of girls sitting at the table next to them began talking excitedly.

“Oh my God! There he is!”

“Yeah, can you believe he dumped Tess? And right before the dance, too!”

“You should have seen Tess’s face! It was classic! Hmm… so that means he’s single now...”

“Don’t even think about it, Vicky! I soo call dibs!”

Liz swallowed hard and looked over her shoulder to find Max walking towards their table, Michael and Alex in tow.

His eyes caught hers and he smiled, a slow and sexy spreading of his lips that made her gulp. Her heart quickened as he reached them and took the seat next to her.

“Hey, guys!” Max greeted the group, then trained his gaze upon Liz as his voice grew deeper. More intimate. “Hi, Liz.”

“Um, hi Max,” she replied uncertainly. He sure was acting different than he had that morning. “Are you okay?”

He cocked his head, resting his cheek on one fist as he continued staring into her eyes. “I’m great. You?” he asked, flashing her one of his devilishly handsome half-smiles.

Liz frowned. What was going on? “I’m okay… listen, I wanted to talk to you about this morning. About Kyle…”

Max waved his hand. “No problem, Liz. I understand that you made those plans with Kyle before you knew the truth. It’s perfectly okay.”

Her frown deepened. “The truth?”

“That I had broken up with Tess. I can’t blame you, I should have never gone out with her in the first place. If I hadn’t, things would be the way they are supposed to be,” Max answered casually, taking a bite of his pizza.

Liz cocked an eyebrow. “And exactly how are things supposed to be?”

He looked at her, giving her another devastating smile. “Oh, I think you know the answer to that, Liz,” he replied in a husky tone, looking her up and down and not bothering to hide his interest.

Liz blushed under his scrutiny. “No, why don’t you explain it to me?” she replied stiffly.

Max gazed at her for a moment, his warm amber eyes scalding her deep brown ones. Then he grinned slowly. “All in good time,” he murmured.

Her mouth fell open at the look of pure lust in his gorgeous eyes. Max turned back to the group and began talking as if nothing had happened.

Liz couldn’t speak, she was so surprised.

Okay, what had just happened? She had come to lunch expecting to spend the hour trying to convince Max that she only liked Kyle as a friend, but then he had totally turned the tables on her by practically telling her that!

She began to get annoyed as she watched Max laughing. Who did he think he was? First he tells her that he broke up with Tess, then dropped a bomb that he had been in love with someone else the entire time, then left seemingly upset, only to show up acting as if he wanted to devour her alive?

Max glanced at Liz who was pouting prettily beside him and smiled inwardly. Oh yeah, he was getting under her skin all right.

Which was precisely what he had planned.

He reached under the table and placed his hand lightly on her thigh, squeezing gently.

Liz squeaked, glancing at him in surprise. Max just smiled as he continued talking to Michael.

<center>Chapter 8</center>

Max opened his locker and placed his books inside.

“Hi, Max,” a female voice behind him called.

He turned to find himself staring at five smiling girls. He raised an eyebrow and smiled back at the one who had said his name.

“Hi, Courtney. What’s going on?” he asked, raising a brow questioningly.

Courtney smiled seductively, taking a step forward as she tossed her long blonde hair over her shoulders.

“Well… I heard you broke up with Tess this morning, Max. I have to say, I definitely approve,” she purred.

“Yeah, I can’t believe you stayed with her that long!” Vickie Delanie piped up, then closed her mouth when Courtney glared at her.

Max smiled in confusion. “Oh… okay. Well, I’m glad you guys are happy about it. It was something that was long overdue.”

Courtney giggled and cocked her head flirtatiously. “You’re so funny Max!” she teased, reaching out to stroke his arm

Max frowned at her obvious flirting. “Thanks. So… was there anything else I can do for you, Courtney?”

Her mouth curled. “Actually, Max, the question is… is there anything I can do for you?” she corrected in a suggestive purr.

Max stared at her in surprise as she pulled a slip of paper from her bra and handed it to him.

“Give me a call,” Courtney winked, then turned and walked off.

He shook his head as he looked from the girls' retreating figures to the slip of paper. Sighing, he tossed it into the nearest trash can, turning back to his locker.

Ever since the news of his breakup with Tess had drifted through the school, the females of West Roswell seeme to be on the prowl.

With the exception of the one female he actually wanted.

As if on cue, a throat was cleared.

Max pulled his head out of his locker to see Liz standing next to him, arms crossed over her chest and her eyes staring into his.

A smile of pleasure broke over his face as he shut his locker door. “Liz. What a pleasant surprise,” he said warmly.

She frowned suspiciously. “What’s going on with you?”

Max’s smile faltered, then returned full force as he cocked an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“Oh… cut the bull!” she said, dropping her arms as she glared at him. “What’s your game, Evans? Hmm?”

Max grinned as he watched her get flustered. “Evans? What happened to Max?”

“Yeah, well, I’m not sure I know where Max is, so until then, you’re just Evans!”

Max sighed. “Liz, what are you talking about?”

“How about the way you’ve been acting all day?” Liz snapped in annoyance. “First you were calling my house all night, and then I get here and you tell me you broke up with Tess and that you love someone else, then you just leave and practically avoid me till lunchtime where you proceed to act like an egotistical –“ her voice rose as her irritation increased.

“Liz,” Max tried to break in, but bit his lip as she ignored him and continued rambling.

“- jerk and then you leave again and I just don’t understand what is going on and why did you kiss me last night?” she finished, her pretty face flushed with anger.

Max raised an eyebrow in amusement. “Um… actually, I think you kissed me.”

Liz’s mouth opened to protest, then realized he was right. She tossed her hair and glared at him. “Well… you kissed me back!”

Max’s lips curled and he took a step forward. “Yes… I did.”

Liz stepped back. “And then… you broke up with Tess.”

His smile broadened as he stepped forward again, his voice lowering. “Hmm… so I did…”

Liz continued backing up until she felt the wall behind her. Max stepped closer until he was practically pushing her against the wall.

“W… why did you break up with her?” Liz whispered, her eyes burning into his as her breath came heavily.

“Because she wasn’t you, Liz,” he answered honestly.

Liz’s mouth fell open and she gazed into Max’s eyes, searching for any sign that he was still teasing.

All she found was truth in his warm golden eyes.

“Really?” she asked, hope staining her voice.

He smiled gently. “Liz… I’ve been in love with you since the moment I saw you all those years ago… a little brown-haired girl with big brown eyes, crying because she was homesick.”

Liz inhaled. “You remember that?” she whispered, eyes shining with surprise.

“I remember everything, Liz Parker. Every smile… every laugh… every word you ever spoke to me…” Max murmured, reaching out to cup her soft cheek.

Liz’s lip trembled. “Why… why did you stop writing me?” she responded, asking the question that had plagued her mind over the last seven years.

Max stared deeply into her eyes. “I… thought you’d forgotten me. When you didn’t return to camp the following summer, I thought you’d just… forgotten…”

Liz shook her head. “No. I remembered, too, Max. Every moment… every feeling… every… kiss…”

Max pulled her closer and his lips covered hers as Liz wrapped her arms around him.

“I love you, Liz Parker,” he murmured against her mouth and Liz choked on a sob as a tear slid down her cheek.

“And I don’t intend to let you go again,” Max answered, pulling back to stare her in the eyes as he made his vow. “Ever.”

“I love you, too Max,” Liz replied, smiling through her tears before pulling Max back to her.

<center>**********************************</center>

Kyle walked out to his car, grumbling to himself along the way. He couldn’t believe how unlucky he was.

He had finally met the perfect girl, but she was in love with that jerk-off Max Evans.

“Isn’t it enough that every girl in the whole damn school is under his charms?” Kyle snapped aloud, then shook his head.

“Kyle Valenti.”

A smug voice caused Kyle to turn his head and his mouth dropped open as he caught sight of Tess Harding lounging against his red Mustang.

Scowling, he walked over to her. “What do you want, Tess?”

Tess laughed, but to Kyle it sounded more like a cackle. “Why, what’s with the frown, Kyle? Things not been going your way today?” Tess grinned sarcastically.

Kyle smirked and crossed his arms over his chest. “I should be asking you the same thing, Tess. Especially after what I heard about Evans dumping you.”

Her smile dissolved into a malicious sneer and she glared at Kyle, blue eyes smoldering. “Yeah, well, that won’t last long,” she snapped.

Kyle laughed, shaking his head at her in mock sympathy. “Oh, Tess… you really are blind, aren’t you? Evans doesn’t want you. He’s way too wrapped up in his latest conquest…”

“What, you mean the Little Miss Perfect Liz Parker?” Tess interrupted.

Kyle smirked. “So maybe you aren’t as blind as I thought. Now, if you’ll get the fuck away from my car so I can get out of this hell-hole-“

“Would you shut up!” Tess snapped. “Do you want to hear my plan or not?”

Kyle gave her a look. “No, Tess. I don’t. I don’t want to be involved in anything that has to do with you.”

As he climbed into his car, he placed the keys into the ignition and was about to turn it on when Tess spoke again.

“So, I guess you wouldn’t be interested in getting Liz Parker, then?”

He froze and turned to Tess, his eyes narrowing. “What does Liz have to do with this?”

Tess smiled innocently. “What if I told you that I knew a way for us both to get what we want?”

Kyle frowned. He didn’t trust Tess as far as he could throw her, but she had caught his attention... reluctantly. “Go on.”

Tess smiled as she realized she had gained his interest. “You are going to help me get Max back.”

Kyle raised an eyebrow. “And what do I get?”

“If you help me, I will make sure Liz Parker ends up in your arms, though why you’d want her is beyond me.”

Kyle glared at her. “And if I don’t help you?”

Tess smirked. “Oh, I think you will. Unless you want your precious Liz to end up with Max. God knows what he’ll… do… to her,” she said suggestively and Kyle stiffened.

He stared at Tess for a long moment, debating whether or not he should agree.

On the one hand, anything that had to do with Tess Harding was bad news. But on the other, she was right. If he didn’t do something, Liz would inevitably fall for Max’s slick charms, and he would no doubt take advantage of her.

Kyle turned towards Tess, hoping he wasn’t about to make the biggest mistake of his life. “What do I have to do?”

Tess smiled triumphantly.

<center>*********************************</center>

Max sighed heavily as he headed for his Jeep. He wasn't sure how much longer he was going to be able to keep up with this plan of Isabel and Maria’s.

It had only been a few hours since said plan had been established and Max was already ready to throw in the towel. His daydreams were getting out of control.

This last one had been a doozy.

He had been standing at his locker minding his own business after the Courtney fiasco, and Liz had approached him, demanding to know why he had acted so strange at lunch.

Max’s over-zealous brain had immediately conjured up some kind of romantic reunion between the two of them, complete with the admission of shared love.

In reality, he had just sort of stood there until she had walked off in a huff, grumbling about him under her breath.

After shaking himself out of his fantasy, he had caught a glimpse of Liz’s petite form heading out to the parking lot and had followed after her, only to see her get into Kyle Valenti’s red Mustang.

Damn. He had blown that one. He would just have to be more careful in the future around Liz.

He wasn’t sure if acting all cocky around her was doing any good, but Maria had insisted that he had to show Liz what she was missing.

But Max only thought he was the one missing out, as he watched Liz laugh at something Kyle said as they drove off.

Yeah, he was going to have a little talk with Maria and Isabel after school and they were going to have to come up with something else.

Maybe he could serenade Liz outside her balcony window…

Smiling, he made a mental note to see Mr. Delgado at the hardware store as soon as possible. That guy knew practically every romantic song ever written, and he also knew a mariachi band….

Hey! What are you doing just standing around? I’ve been waiting for like, ten minutes!”

Max broke out of his thoughts to find Isabel staring at him, a frown on her perfect face and hands on her hips. “Oh, sorry… I was just thinking…”

Isabel’s face softened slightly. “About Liz? Listen, Max… why don’t you just tell her how you feel? I mean, all these games and everything… it’s just getting in the way of what’s really important.”

Max’s eyes fell as a sad look crossed his face. “I know. But it’s not that simple, Isabel. There’s a lot of things that have happened that Liz and I need to work through…”

“Like what?” Isabel snorted. “You two obviously have feelings for each other. You just need to sit down and discuss them.”

Max rolled his eyes. “Didn’t I just say that?” he asked, but Isabel wasn’t listening.

“And I know the perfect way!” she continued excitedly. “There’s a party tonight at that old factory. You should ask Liz to go so the two of you can talk.”

Max looked doubtful. “I don’t think that a bunch of people drinking and throwing up would be the best atmosphere for me to tell Liz that I’m in love with her. Besides… she and Kyle are apparently pretty close now…” his voice trailed off as a pained look crept into his eyes.

“Actually, I heard from Lucy who heard from Paige that she overheard Liz telling Kyle that she only wanted to be friends,” Isabel said slyly.

Max looked hopeful again. “Really?”

Isabel nodded. “Yeah, now let’s get home so you can call her and I can start getting ready.”

With that, she grabbed Max’s arm and yanked him through parking lot.

<center>**************************************</center>

Kyle swallowed nervously as he glanced at Liz who was sitting next to him, staring out the window deep in her own thoughts.

He thought back to the plan Tess had filled him in on and he wavered.

He didn’t really want to do this… did he? After all, Liz was a really nice girl and he didn’t want to see her get hurt.

Yeah, but that’s what will happen if she gets entangled with Evans, a little devil said in his ear.

But how do you know that? You don’t actually know for sure if Max is a jerk… he can’t help it if all the girls fawn all over him, another voice said.

Do you want Liz or not? You have to get rid of Max Evans!

This isn’t the way to get her, the second voice argued. You should tell her the truth. If she doesn’t want to be with you… you should just accept it.

Kyle gripped the steering wheel tighter. “Have you heard about that party tonight?” he suddenly blurted out, trying to chase the voices away.

Liz looked up. “Um, yeah. Maria mentioned something about a rave at the old… shoe factory?” she wrinkled her nose in question.

Kyle chuckled. “Soap factory,” he corrected and Liz giggled at her own mistake. She and Kyle shared a small smile.

Kyle took a deep breath. “Do you… would you like to go with me?” he asked carefully. “As friends of course,” he added resentfully as he saw the cautious look pass over Liz’s face.

Liz bit her lip in thought. She wasn’t really into the rave scene. But then again… Maria would be there and it could be fun. And Kyle was a nice guy, she really did want to be friends and get to know him better…

Kyle awaited her response with trepidation. She had to say yes. Otherwise Tess was going kill him for not getting her there to see whatever scheme Tess had devised to break her and Max apart.

“Okay. What time are you going pick me up?” Liz asked brightly, smiling at him.

Kyle looked at her in surprise. He hadn't thought she was actually going to agree. Or was it really that a part of him had been hoping? “Um… how about seven?’ he asked, feeling guilty as he saw the trust on Liz’s face.

You are doing this for her… for the two of you, he thought trying to make himself feel better.

Another stab of guilt pierced him as Liz flashed him another smile.

“Great! I’ll be waiting,” she replied as they pulled into the Crashdown parking lot. She grabbed her bag and thanked Kyle for the ride before getting out and heading for her apartment.

Kyle watched her go, thoughts racing through his head. He thought about getting out and warning Liz about what was going to happen that night – not to believe anything she saw.

But the selfish part of him, the part that wanted her for himself, refused to let him move.

As he watched her enter the café, his hand slammed down on the steering wheel.

Damn Tess for knowing his weakness.

<center>************************************</center>

“Hey, Liz! Order up!”

Liz smiled at Jose as she grabbed two platters of steaming food and made her way through the restaurant to serve the famished customers.

She was beginning to actually like her job at the Crashdown… despite the ridiculous uniforms.

“Hey, Liz! Got you working today?” Alex called as he and Isabel walked through the café doors.

Liz set down a plate of food and smiled in their direction. “Yep! I’m only working a half-shift, though, so I should be off in about ten minutes.”

Alex and Isabel sat down in a nearby booth as Liz walked over.

“So, you’re free tonight?” Isabel asked innocently as she studied the menu.

“Well, I was thinking of going to that rave thing later,” Liz sighed, dropping into the booth next to her and yanking off her antenna headband.

“Really? Cool, yeah, we’re all going!” Alex grinned and Liz perked up.

“All? As in everyone?” she asked, biting her lip in thought. Did that mean Max was going…?

“Yeah, me, Izzy, Maria and Michael, and Max.”

“Hey, if you need a ride I’m sure Max would give you one,” Isabel smiled.

“Oh, well… um… actually..” Liz stammered, then blushed furiously as the object of their conversation walked through the doors.

“Hey, Max! Over here, my man!” Alex called, waving his hands frantically.

Max met Liz’s eyes as he headed over to the booth. Sitting next to Alex, he inclined his head in greeting.

“Hey, guys.”

“Max, we were just talking about that rave tonight,” Isabel said pointedly and Max shot her an irritated look. She returned it, then Max sighed.

“Oh, yeah… it sounds like fun,” he mumbled, his eyes returning to Liz as she stared at the table.

“You going?” he added casually, and her head shot up.

“Um… yeah, actually… Kyle asked me if I wanted to...” Liz trailed off as Max’s jaw tightened.

“Oh… Kyle,” he muttered dejectedly and Isabel and Alex looked at Liz.

“Well, we’re just friends anyway, so it should be fun,” Liz smiled, although it didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“Yeah… well, maybe I’ll see you there,” Max said, standing up and shoving his hands in his pockets.

Liz bit her lip as he turned and headed out the Crashdown, jumping in his Jeep and driving off.

“Jeez… what’s his problem?” Alex asked, earning him a kick in the shin from Isabel. “Ouch!”

Isabel shot Liz a questioning look, but she was staring out the window after Max, her eyes sad.

“Liz…” Isabel began, breaking her friend out of her daze. Liz jumped up and readjusted her headband, not meeting their eyes.

“Well… I’ve still got a few minutes before I get off, so I’m just going to go…” with that she rushed off.

Alex looked at Isabel with raised eyebrows. “Um… did I miss something?”

Isabel rolled her eyes, but a sympathetic look was on her face. “Don’t ask.”

<center>**************************************</center>

Isabel opened the door to her house and kissed her mother hello as she made her way to her room.

As she entered the hallway, she cringed as the meloncholy sounds of Counting Crows resonated from behind Max’s closed door.

Isabel walked over and knocked lightly, expecting to hear Max tell her to go away. But nothing happened, the music just got louder.

Frowning, Isabel pushed the door open and found her brother laying on his bed, one arm slung over his face.

He was wearing one shoe and the other had apparently been flung across the spacious room, landing next to a heap of clothes in his closet.

He wasn’t wearing a shirt, but his jeans were still on, so Isabel thanked God for small favors.

She put her hands on her hips and walked over to the stereo, pressing stop.

As the music cut off, Max raised his head and glared at her.

“What did you do that for?”

Isabel glared back. “So what? Are you just going to sit here on your bum ass and let Kyle Valenti go off with the love of your life?”

Max sighed and fell back against the bed, staring at the ceiling. “Why do you care, Isabel?”

“Why do I care? Max, you’re my brother! Of course I care!” Isabel said incredulously. “Besides, Liz is my friend, and I don’t particularly want her to end up with Kyle. Not when she so obviously is in love with you!”

Max snorted, rolling over onto his stomach and burying his head in his pillow. “She’s hardly in love with me. She can’t even look at me anymore.”

Isabel sighed and sat down on his bed. “Max, that’s the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. It’s so obvious she loves you. I mean, Maria told me what happened when you two saw each other for the first time. Plus, I was there at camp! I saw how she looked at you.”

“Yeah, well… whatever she felt then, she doesn’t feel that way anymore. She thinks I like Tess or something,” he cringed.

Tess?” Isabel cried, “Ew! Max, I told you that you would end up regretting getting involved with that gerbil! And I was so right!”

He sat up and rolled his eyes. “Blah, blah, blah… all right Isabel! You were right! But it doesn’t really matter now.”

“Oh yes it does! You are going to get up off your stinky ass and take a shower. Then you are getting dressed and coming to that party and you are going to tell Liz how you feel and end this!” Isabel declared vehemently. “So get up!”

With that, she pushed Max off the bed and he landed with an umph on the floor.

“Ouch! Damn, Isabel! This is my room! You can’t just walk in here and start demanding things! I’m not Alex!” Max fumed as he stood up, brushing his jeans.

Isabel stood next to him, a good few inches taller and stared him down.

He finally looked away. “God, you're scary,” he admitted, then sighed as he headed for his bathroom.

Isabel smirked proudly, then headed for her room to call Maria.

They had some planning to do…

<center>Chapter 9</center>

“I don’t know about this, Tess…”

“Don’t you even think about backing out now, you are a part of this whether you like it or not. You want the girl, right?”

“Yeah, but I don’t know if this is a good idea..”

“No buts, Kyle. We’re going through with the plan. Don’t make me regret asking you for help. You understand?”

“Yes..”

Kyle walked up to the Crashdown, rubbing his hands together nervously as he recalled his earlier phone conversation with Tess.

This whole idea was just sounding worse and worse the more he thought about it.

Maybe he should just let Liz decide if she wanted him or Max.

But didn’t she already tell you? She wants Max.

He opened the door and spotted Liz sitting at the counter waiting for him.

He stopped and almost turned and ran, but then she caught sight of him, and she smiled and began making her way towards him.

“Hey! You ready to go?” she asked sweetly, flipping her hair over her bare shoulders.

“Wow… you look great, Liz,” Kyle said honestly, forgetting his guilt for a moment as he took in her countenance.

Liz smiled and twirled playfully for him. “What? You like?” she teased, gesturing to her outfit.

She was decked out in a form-fitting black dress that flared at the bottom and a pair of black heeled-sandals.

Kyle laughed and nodded his head. “Like? Oh yeah!”

I more than like it, he thought wistfully. Too bad she thought of him as only a friend.

Isn’t that what you and Tess are going to change tonight?

“Kyle? Are you ready to go?” Liz asked, breaking Kyle out of his thoughts.

“Huh? Oh yeah… let’s get going,” Kyle said quietly. He took Liz’s hand and led her towards his car.

<center>*************************************************</center>

“Do you see her anywhere?” Maria asked, looking over Max’s shoulder as he scanned the smoky room anxiously.

Max jumped slightly then shook his head. “No. I can’t see a damn thing in here,” he frowned, squinting his eyes at the doorway again.

“I know… where the hell is all that smoke coming from-“ Maria began, then stopped as two people walked by with a fog machine. “Oh. Never mind.”

“Still no sign Maxwell?” Michael asked as he approached the two, handing Maria a cup of red liquid.

“What is this?” Maria asked, looking suspiciously at the drink.

Michael shrugged and downed a similar glass in one sip. Then he let out a loud burp, wiping his mouth, “Mmm… good.”

Maria rolled her eyes as Max smiled at his friend.

Taking a dainty sip of the drink, Maria said, “So, you finally decided to go after her? What changed your mind?”

“As if you didn’t already know,” Max said wryly, raising an eyebrow at his friend. “I know you and Isabel were in this together.”

Maria scoffed, but didn’t deny anything. Just then, a snotty voice interrupted their thoughts.

“Max! What a surprise! I didn’t expect to see you here!” Tess said in a saccharine sweet voice, sashaying up to Max’s side.

Max visibly grimaced. “What do you want, Tess?”

She pouted and ran a hand down his arm. “Oh come on, Maxie. You can’t still be serious about breaking up with me. Let’s dance.”

Max yanked himself from Tess’s grip, shooting her a frown. “I was dead serious, Tess. And considering the fact that we are broken up, I think you should find someone else to dance with. I’m waiting for someone.”

At this, Tess’s lips curled. “Oh? You wouldn’t be speaking of Liz Parker would you? Because if that’s the case then you'll just be disappointed,” she sneered.

Max frowned, but his attention was now on Tess. “What's that supposed to mean?”

“Oh nothing… just the fact that I heard that Liz and Kyle Valenti were now an item,” Tess said nonchalantly. “And I don’t think Kyle would take to nicely to you trying to take his girlfriend.”

At the word girlfriend, Max’s shoulders tensed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Maria said angrily, stepping up to the shorter blonde with vehemence.

Tess simply shrugged her shoulders and turned. “If you say so. I’ll be seeing you later, Max. Definitely.”

After she left, Maria turned to Max, who was wearing a sad expression on his handsome face.

“Max… don’t listen to anything that stupid skank said,” Maria said.

“But what if she’s right, Maria? What if I am too late?” he asked sadly. “Why didn’t I tell her how I felt sooner?”

Maria opened her mouth to speak, but then her eyes lit up and she gestured with her head towards the door.

“Well… here’s your chance.”

Max turned and his eyes fell on Liz, who was just entering the doorway to the abandoned factory.

The music slowed and a slow song began playing in the background as Max watched Kyle step out from behind Liz, his hand on the small of her back.

Max frowned and took a step forward, when Liz turned from him and wrapped her arms around Kyle, a smile on her face as the two began dancing.

<center>*****************************</center>

“Are you having fun?” Kyle asked over the sound of Kelly Rowland and Nelly singing back and forth.

“Hmm?” Liz asked distractedly, as her eyes scanned the building.

“I asked if you were having a good time,” Kyle repeated, taking note of Liz’s lack of attention. “Are you expecting someone?”

Liz’s gaze snapped towards him and her face flushed slightly. “What? No! I mean… I was just looking around…”

She averted her eyes guiltily. Truthfully, she had been trying to spot Max ever since she and Kyle had shown up.

She felt bad about not paying attention to Kyle, but she just couldn’t get Max off her mind.

She kept replaying the defeated expression that had been in his eyes earlier that afternoon when she had admitted she was going to the rave with Kyle.

Kyle watched as Liz drifted back into la-la land. No doubt thinking of Max. Sighing in frustration, he ran a hand through his hair.

“You want some punch?” he asked finally, receiving a nod from Liz.

As he walked off to get her a glass, Liz looked around and took in her surroundings.

Strobe lights, disco balls, and smoke filtered throughout the huge factory and kids were dancing and mingling and doing other things that Liz wasn’t sure she wanted to know about.

As she looked around, her gaze locked with a guy standing not too far from her, leaning against a wall.

He was dressed all in black, tattoos covering every inch of skin that was exposed through his ripped clothing.

His lips curled in a leering grin and Liz instantly looked away. Unfortunately, the kid didn’t take a hint.

“Wanna Jell-O shot?” he asked, and Liz jumped as she spun around to find him standing next to her.

He grinned again and held out a small shot glass containing green gelatin.

Liz smiled uncertainly. “Uh… no thanks.”

Turning away from him, she hoped he would take the hint.

No such luck.

“Oh come on! Maybe it’ll loosen you up and then maybe you and I…” he trailed off and ran a hand down Liz’s arm.

Liz attempted to jerk her arm away, but he grabbed it and held her firm to him.

She contemplated screaming, but a sudden voice caused them both to jump.

“She said no, thank you very much! Now get outta here!”

Liz gazed in wonder as Max stared down the shorter boy and gave him an intimidating glare.

The kid backed up, holding his hands up in the air. “Hey, relax, dude! I didn’t know she was taken!”

Max glanced at Liz as the kid wandered off, muttering, “Cock tease.”

Liz swallowed as Max continued to stare at her, his eyes softening back to their normal honey gold.

“Are you alright?” he asked in concern.

“Yes, thank you… Max,” Liz breathed as his gaze made her heart jump.

Suddenly a song came on with a slow, sensual beat and Max and Liz became aware how close they were.

“So… you came…” Liz said to break the silence.

“Yeah… where’s Kyle?” Max asked, holding his breath hopefully.

“Somebody say my name?” Kyle asked with false cheer as he walked up and scrutinized the scene before him.

He handed Liz a drink and placed his arm casually around her tense frame as he stared challengingly at Max.

Max held his gaze unhindered, and took a step closer to Liz.

Liz watched the silent battle before her until she couldn’t take it anymore. “Kyle, could you leave Max and I alone for a moment? I need to talk to him.”

“But Liz…”

“Please, Kyle?” Liz asked softly and Kyle reluctantly stepped back, feeling his blood boil at the triumphant look Max shot him.

“Let’s go outside,” Liz suggested, taking hold of Max’s arm and practically dragging him away.

Kyle watched as Liz and Max disappeared and any reservations of what he was about to do to Max disappeared with them.

<center>*************************************</center>

“So… you wanted to talk to me?” Max asked as he and Liz walked through the parking lot in front of the old factory.

Liz shivered from the cool night air and Max immediately shed his leather coat and draped it around her shoulders.

“Better?”

Liz smiled up at him, Max’s scent enveloping her. “Yes, thank you.”

They reached a bench and Liz sat down, patting the spot next to her. “Come on, Max. I won’t bite,” she teased.

Max smiled and took the seat.

“So, I thought we needed to catch up.…things have been kinda weird lately,” Liz began.

Max nodded understandingly. “Yeah…”

Liz took a deep breath and glanced at him. “Max… what’s going on between us?”

Max hesitated. “What do you mean?”

Liz sighed and stared down at her new sandals, her fingers fiddling anxiously with her bracelet as she asked the question that had been plaguing her ever since Max Evans came back into her life.. “I mean… are we friends? Old acquaintances? Or… are we something… more?”

Max reached over and laid his hand on top of Liz’s, stilling her actions. “Liz,” he began softly, “are you asking me what I want?”

“I… yes,” she admitted nervously.

What if he told her he only felt friendship for her? What if she really had lost her chance all those years ago?

“Liz… look at me,” Max murmured, tucking a finger under her chin.

Liz risked looking up at him, and the emotion in his warm eyes caused her breath to hitch.

“I’ve been in love with you since that first time I saw you, a beautiful little girl sitting next to a suitcase. You took my breath away even then,” Max whispered, running chocolate tresses through his fingers.

Liz’s eyes filled with tears as she listened to Max’s confession. “You… you have? I did?”

Max chuckled lightly, leaning closer to her. “God, I’ve missed you so much…” he murmured, closing his eyes as their noses brushed against each others.

“Oh Max…” Liz breathed as he leaned his forehead against hers, her heart beating rapidly. “I missed you too… and I love you… so very, very much…”

A full blown smile crossed his handsome face and tears of joy filmed his amber eyes. “Liz…” Max whispered.

“Yes, Max?” Liz whispered in return, her tiny hands encased in his much larger ones.

“I’m going to kiss you now,” Max said seriously, staring deep into her eyes.

“Please,” Liz begged softly. She gazed up at Max under heavy lids and it was Max’s undoing.

Groaning slightly, Max finally captured Liz’s lips with his own and the two moaned in satisfaction.

Liz wrapped her arms around Max’s neck, pulling him closer as Max’s hands pulled her over into his lap.

His lips began a gentle caress until Liz’s mouth opened to welcome Max’s beckoning tongue.

As their tongues met, the gentle kiss burst into a fiery consummation as the suppressed feelings of the last week, heck the last seven years erupted in a passionate haze.

When they finally broke for air, their eyes met and Max gazed at her in wonder.

“You’re really here… you didn’t run…” he mumured in awe, running his hands adoringly through her hair.

Liz nodded, holding a hand up to cup his cheek. “No more running, Max. Never again.”

<center>**********************************</center>

Maria bobbed her head to the vigorous beat blaring through the warehouse, when a pair of strong arms came around her.

Jumping slightly, she spun around yelling, “Back off! I have pepper spray and I ain’t afraid to use it!”

With that, she let loose a steady stream of the mace onto the unsuspecting person.

Ouch! Dammit, Maria! Shit, that stings! What the hell are you doing?!” Michael yelled, clutching his eyes in pain.

“Omigod, Mikey!” Maria shrieked, dropping her can of spray and reaching out to touch Michael. “I am soo sorry, honey! I thought you were a mugger or something!”

Michael managed to open one eye to glare at her incredulously. Then his eyes filled with tears as the pepper began to work its way more solidly into his eyes.

“Oh, babe, you’re crying!” Maria wailed as she began to dab at his eyes with a tissue.

“Water,” Michael managed to croak out as Maria continued to flurry about him.

“Water? You’re thirsty?” Maria asked, not catching on. “Oh! For your eyes! Okay, hold on Mikey G!”

With that, she went running as fast as her five-inch platforms would carry her towards the punch bowl.

Michael sat down on a nearby stool and held a tissue over his now swollen eyes.

Despite his current condition, he had to bite back a grin at Maria’s actions.

His girlfriend was definitely a spitfire.

He looked up as Max and Liz came walking towards him, holding hands tightly.

“Hey, Mike! Whoa... you okay?” Max asked, surveying his best friend’s face curiously.

“Hmm… let me think… no! Maria sprayed me, all right?” he bit out in annoyance.

“Sprayed you?” Max asked in confusion. He shared a glance with Liz, who merely shrugged her shoulders.

“Yeah, sprayed me with Mace!”

Max stifled the laugh that was bubbling in his throat. “She… she what?? Why did… why did she do that?”

“Because I mistook him for a no good scoundrel,” Maria piped in, rushing back to hand Michael a wet napkin and a glass of water. “Maybe if he didn’t look so scraggly…”

“Mar, this is hardly the time or the place,” Michael warned and Maria had the decency to keep quiet.

Michael applied the napkin to his eyes and sighed happily as the sting began to slowly wear off.

Maria’s eyes narrowed as she watched Max and Liz more closely, taking note of their still joined hands.

“So, kiddies… is there something you’d like to share with the rest of the class?” Maria asked, arching her brows.

Max glanced at Liz and she smiled.

“Why, whatever do you mean, Maria?” she replied, batting her eyelashes innocently.

“Oh… cut the crap, Lizzie! Are you two finally together or what, huh, huh, huh?”

Liz giggled and leaned into Max’s embrace. “Yes, we are together.”

Maria squealed and engulfed them both in a huge hug, “Omigod! I am soo happy for you guys!! I soo knew it would happen!”

“Maria, that’s really sweet, but you’re cutting off our air supply,” Max choked, patting Maria on the back.

“What? Oh! I’m sorry! I’m just soo happy for you guys!” she reiterated, flashing a huge grin.

“Yeah, but what about Whitebread Valenti over there?” Michael piped in, jabbing a thumb towards Kyle, who sat sulking.

Liz felt a stab of guilt pierce her and she pulled away from Max. “I should go talk to him,” she said, glancing to Max.

“Sure… I’ll be waiting here,” Max gave her an encouraging smile and let her go, his eyes following her as she made her way across the room.

Liz walked up to Kyle, watching as he kicked aimlessly at the ground. “Drawing pictures in the dirt?” she asked teasingly.

Kyle looked up at her and gave a forced smile. “Hey… I wasn’t sure if you were coming back.”

Liz took a deep breath and sat down, gesturing for Kyle to take a seat next to her. “Kyle… I really like you a lot, and if things weren’t so complicated… listen, you’re going to make a girl out there really happy someday. I just… I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship with you.”

“But you’re ready for a relationship with Evans, right?” Kyle asked mockingly. “After all, that’s what this is about. You’re dumping me for him. I knew it!”

He jumped up and ran a hand through his short hair.

“Kyle… it’s not like that! I really do like you! It’s just that… Max and I… look, it’s really complicated, okay?” Liz fought to explain. “I feel awful about this, but-“

Kyle held a hand up. “Save it, Liz. I’m not a charity case. I don’t need your pity or your lies.”

“Please, Kyle. Just listen to me!” Liz exclaimed. “You’re a great guy! Any girl would be lucky to have you! I’m… I’m just not that girl…” Liz finished softly.

Kyle stared into her sincere eyes and his shoulders slumped as realization hit him. “You’re in love with him, aren’t you?”

Liz looked down. “I’m sorry.”

Kyle sighed and sat down next to her again. Neither one of them spoke for a moment, and then Kyle realized what he had to do.

Managing a smile, he broke the silence. “Max is a lucky guy.”

Liz glanced at him. “Kyle… I would really like… no, I would love … is there any way we could still be friends?”

Although it killed him to do it, Kyle nodded. “Of course, Parker. I’d rather have you as my friend then nothing at all.”

And he meant it.

Liz’s eyes shone brightly and she launched herself into Kyle’s unsuspecting arms.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” she whispered, squeezing him tightly.

Kyle laughed, wrapping his arms around her awkwardly. “Easy there, Liz. I don’t think it would do much good to make Romeo over there jealous,” he teased, noticing the way Max was watching the scene unfold.

Liz sat up, wiping her eyes and smiling. “You’re right. How about a friendly handshake?”

Kyle smiled and shook her outstretched hand.

The two stood up and Kyle walked Liz back over to the group, who were busily trying not to stare in curiosity.

As he met Max’s eyes, Kyle gave him a friendly pat on the back and murmured in a low voice, “Take good care of her, Evans. Or else.”

With that he walked off, leaving a bewildered Max.

Kyle walked around the room until he found what he was looking for.

Walking up behind her, he grabbed Tess’s arm and pulled her into the shadows. “I need to talk to you,” he murmured.

“What is it? Is everything going as planned?” Tess asked, smoothing her dress from Kyle’s rough attentions.

“That’s just it. There is no plan. Not anymore,” Kyle said, watching as Tess’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?” she asked, folding her arms over her chest.

“I mean I’m done. Out. I don’t want to be a part of this sick joke of yours any longer,” Kyle hissed, glaring her in the eye.

Tess’s mouth fell open. “What do you mean you’re out? You... you can’t! You cannot do that to me!”

Kyle smirked. “Oh but I am, Tess. And it feels oh, so good.”

“Well, what about Liz, huh? Are you planning on just letting Max have his way with her?” Tess snapped.

“For your information, Max and Liz happen to love each other and even I’m not stupid enough to screw with that,” Kyle admitted.

Ha! They don’t know what love is!” Tess fumed. “You are not backing out, Valenti!”

“Oh get over it, Tess! Evan’s doesn’t want you, and it’s no surprise why! You’re nothing but an evil, manipulative bitch! Why don’t you freaking grow up!” Kyle retorted angrily.

Tess gasped and held her hand over her mouth in shock. “How dare you! I offered to help you and this is how you repay me??” she shrieked. “You are going to regret this, Kyle Valenti! So help me God!”

“Yeah, whatever! I’m out of here,” Kyle muttered, throwing Tess another disgusted look before walking off.

Tess watched him go, sputtering in disbelief. Then she threw her glass down and screamed.

“No one walks out on Tess Harding,” she declared, her eyes glittering coldly, then a wicked smile crossed her face.

Fine, Kyle had chosen his side. Which meant when it all hit the fan, she would make sure he had the pleasure of going down as well.

“… And then Pam Troy got totally trashed and ended up making out with Anna Stevenson’s little brother!” Maria laughed loudly as she chomped on a carrot stick.

The group chuckled as they recalled the memory.

Liz smiled at Max as he nuzzled her neck. He gave her a sexy grin and leaned over to catch her lips, much to her delight.

“Man... I can’t believe I missed that!” Isabel complained, following her statement with several sneezes. “Of all the nights to come down with a cold. I still can’t believe Mom wouldn’t let me out of the house. But what, it’s all right to go to school? Jeez… my nose looks like Rudolph."

Alex rubbed her back affectionately. “Don’t worry, sweetie. For someone who spent the night blowing snot rockets, you look absolutely beautiful.”

Isabel smiled and batted her eyelashes, leaning over towards Alex.

“Hey, that doesn’t mean I want to catch it! I have to play at the dance tomorrow night!”

Isabel frowned and smacked him on the head before crossing her arms with a humph.

“Speaking of the dance… everyone’s going right?” Maria asked excitedly.

Max and Liz met each other’s eyes and smiled shyly. They were both thinking of last night’s events when Max asked her.

“Yeah, we’ll be there,” Max replied, wrapping his arms firmly around Liz as she continued eating her lunch.

“Isn’t there some kind of theme?” Liz asked curiously.

“Yeah… Great Loves Over Time or something like that,” Alex replied, his mouth full of Cheeto’s.

“Ew, Alex! Swallow, then speak!” Maria shook her head disapprovingly. “Anyway… I can’t wait! Stacy Sheinen thinks she is getting most creative costume? I don’t think so!”

The bell rang and the group said their goodbyes, pairing off and heading towards their respective class.

Max kept his arm around Liz’s shoulders as they walked across the quad.

Liz noticed the whispering and stares they were receiving. It had been happening ever since she and Max arrived together at the campus that morning.

Several girls glared at her as they passed and batted their eyes at an oblivious Max.

“Do you get the feeling we’re being watched?” Liz joked, watching as every head turned when they entered the school.

Max had also noticed the commotion and shrugged his shoulders. “They’re just jealous that I have the most beautiful girl in the world in my arms.”

Liz beamed at him as he placed a kiss on her cheek. “That one earned you some points, Mr. Evans.”

“Did it? Well, then what do I get for this?” Max grinned, lifting Liz off her feet and closer to him as he kissed her.

A throat cleared behind them and Max and Liz turned to see Mr. Seligman frowning disapprovingly at them.

Max lowered Liz to the floor, giving his teacher a sheepish smile. “Um.. Good afternoon, Mr. Seligman! We were just on our way to class to, um…learn about parabola’s and… stuff.”

Mr. Seligman raised an eyebrow, piercing the couple with a doubtful expression. “I can see that. Well, you better get inside before you both are late.”

With that, he turned and walked into the classroom, stopping at the door, obviously waiting for them to follow him.

Max glanced at Liz’s red face and chuckled. “Sorry about that… it’s just hard to control myself around you sometimes.”

Liz gave a half-smile and took his hand, leading him inside. “We’ll finish this later…” she promised, winking as she stepped in front.

Max’s eyes widened at the flirtatious expression on his girlfriend’s face. Swallowing, he followed in a slight daze. “Um... we will…?”

<center>*********************************</center>

“So, you have a band?” Liz asked, sucking on a Popsicle as she sat on a stool outside Alex’s garage after school.

Alex nodded, studying his bass as he tuned the strings. “Yeah, I started The Whit’s back in junior high.”

Liz grinned, swinging her legs back and forth. “Hmm… nice name!” she teased.

Alex gave her a cocky grin. “Yeah... Maria likes to say it’s just an S away from what we really are. Of course, that didn’t stop her from becoming the new lead singer after Wendy left.”

“Maria sings with you guys?” Liz asked curiously. “Wow… what does Michael think about that?”

Alex snorted. “At first he was pretty indifferent. In fact, the first time Maria sang with us, Michael didn’t even show up.”

Liz gasped, then laughed. “Oh, you’re kidding! And he’s still alive to tell the tale?”

“Yeah… Maria was pretty upset, although she tried to act like it was no big deal at the time. But when she found out that Michael had gone to Max’s to watch a hockey game instead…” Alex gave a long whistle.

“What was his excuse?” Liz asked in amazement.

“Oh, that he head heard her sing a million times and he didn’t think she would care,” Alex explained. “Well, needless to say, Maria punched him in the head and refused to speak to him for a week.”

“She punched him?” Liz squealed.

“Yeah… you should have seen the shiner she gave him!” Alex shook his head proudly. “Let’s just say that Michael has never missed another DeLuca performance since.”

He and Liz glanced at each other and cracked up, then were interrupted by the ringing of Liz’s cell-phone.

Still laughing, Liz pulled it out of her purse. “Hello?”

“Beautiful…” a deep voice purred through the receiver.

Liz’s eyes lit up as she jumped from the stool. “Max?”

“Hey baby, how you doing?”

“Mmm… I miss you,” Liz answered truthfully. She turned to Alex and he nodded understandingly.

She walked inside the garage as Alex began playing outside.

“I miss you, too,” Max murmured. “What are you doing?”

“I’m at Alex’s listening to him practice,” Liz giggled. “He was just telling me about Maria’s first performance with The Whit’s.”

A groan sounded over the phone. “Oh, man! I guess he told you about Michael then?”

“Oh, yeah.”

“He can be pretty clueless sometimes,” Max chuckled.

“Where are you?” Liz smiled.

“Just getting off practice. Coach kept us late because he decided that we needed extra preparation for the game tomorrow.”

“I can’t wait to see you in action,” Liz teased. “I’m gonna be there screaming your name.”

“Hmm… we don’t need a football game for that, you know,” Max teased.

“Max!” Liz blushed, but inside her stomach flopped at the images of her screaming Max’s name under different circumstances.

“Liz!”

“You are such a guy,” Liz laughed, twirling a strand of hair around her finger.

“But that’s why you love me… listen, I was just calling to ask what time you wanted me to pick you up for the dance tomorrow night?”

“Well, why don’t I just meet you after the game and we can drive to your house? I’ll bring my costume and get ready with Isabel.”

“Are you sure? I mean, you might have to wait a bit before Coach releases me. He likes to debrief the team after each game.”

“Sure! I’ll just hang with Isabel and Maria till you get out,” Liz replied.

“Okay… well, I gotta get to work. Are you staying at Alex’s for awhile?” Max asked.

“Nah, I got to get back before my shift starts,” Liz said.

“Cool… maybe I’ll come see you on my breaks. For the food of course,” Max teased.

Liz laughed. “Right… well, I’ll let you go. Wouldn’t want you to get in trouble with your boss.”

“Brody? Ha! He’s hardly ever there. That’s why I’m manager.”

Liz giggled in response.

“Well… I love you Liz.”

Liz smiled again. “I love you, too, Max…” she replied softly.

Neither wanted to hang up, but after a few seconds, Liz added, “I’ll see you in a while.”

“Yeah… in awhile. Bye,” Max replied, then hesitantly hung up.

Liz clicked her phone off and sighed happily. She walked back out and flopped down on the stool.

“Lover Boy?” Alex joked.

Another sigh from Liz was his answer.

“So, want a drink or anything?” Alex asked, wiping his brow from the New Mexico heat.

Liz shook her head, standing up. “I can’t. I have to get back to the Crashdown for work.”

“Cool. Maria's working, too, and I could use a Blood of Alien smoothie. You need a ride?” Alex asked, unplugging his bass from the amp.

Liz shrugged. “Sure!”

She waited for Alex to inform his parents of his departure, then followed him out to his car.

<center>Chapter 10</center>

“You mean you’ve never seen Max in action?” Maria asked incredulously as she and Liz headed up the packed stadium bleachers.

Liz shook her head, brown eyes twinkling. “No! Well… I saw him when we were at camp. But that was such a long time ago!”

Maria chuckled. “Oh man. You are in for a treat, girl! Just wait until you see him in uniform!”

“Maria!” Liz giggled, then bit her lip in thought. “Hmm… maybe you’re right…”

As they reached the seats that Alex had saved for them, Liz plopped down in excitement, tugging on the blue and gold Comet’s baseball cap that sat on top of her ponytail.

The cheerleading squad, led by Isabel, were already on the sidelines getting the arriving guests in the victory spirit with several lively cheers.

“Wow, look at Izzy! I never knew she was that flexible!” Liz stared in amazement as their friend ended a cheer with a round-off-back-handspring-back-tuck, ended with a split.

I did,” Alex replied smugly, then was pelted with popcorn by the two disgusted girls.

When the opposing team from East Roswell took the field for practice, Maria jumped up, the pompon she had stuck in her hair fluttering in the light breeze.

“Prepare to be crushed, ya sissies!” she shouted, followed by a loud cheering from the West Roswell side.

Isabel shot her a look and then jumped into a pyramid move.

Liz laughed as Maria pumped her fist in the air, taunting the other team. “Careful, Mar! I don’t think Isabel appreciates you leading the cheers around here.”

Maria rolled her eyes. “Puh-lease! Izzy doesn’t appreciate anyone taking away from her spotlight!”

Liz laughed again, then shivered slightly as the cool October air hit her. She reached over and grabbed Max’s varsity jacket he had given her and pulled it on, smiling as his cologne wafted to her nose.

Suddenly, a loud cheering sounded and Liz craned her neck to see what the commotion was.

She looked over to ask Maria and Alex, when she saw them on their feet yelling happily.

She looked back at the field and her eyes widened when she saw the Comet’s taking the field, led by Michael.

“That’s my baby!” Maria yelled proudly, bouncing up and down as Michael rolled his eyes good-naturedly towards the stands.

Liz looked for Max, but frowned when the players continued pouring out of the locker room, no Max in sight.

“Hey, guys… where’s Max? I thought he was the captain?” Liz asked curiously.

“Yeah, he comes out last, right before the coach’s,” Alex explained. “Don’t worry… you’ll know when.”

Liz opened her mouth to ask him how, but was silenced when a deafening roar sounded up.

The cheerleaders began chanting #14! over and over again, urging the crowd to join suit.

Liz looked again and saw Max run out onto the field, then turn around and search the stands.

When they eyes met, his face lit up in a smile and he waved. Liz smiled back and gave a wave in return. Then she boldly blew him a kiss, which he made a show of grabbing out of the air and then mouthed, “I love you.”

Evans! On the field!”

Max blushed slightly, then headed for the rest of the team.

“God, you were right, Maria,” Liz said as she watched the offense head for the sidelines while the defense took the field.

“About what, hun?” Maria asked, too busy trying to catch Michael’s eye as he took a sip of Gatorade from the water cooler.

Liz stared in fascination as Max pulled his helmet off, hair tousled and soaked with sweat.

He stretched his arms over his head, standing on his toes as he shook off the effects of the last quarter.

Her mouth watered as she stared at his cute, muscled butt encased in the tight pants he wore.

“The uniform…” she breathed, drooling as Max and Michael began a heated conversation.

Maria winked at her. “I know! They look grimy as hell… but damn if I don’t want to just run down there and rip those pants right off his-“

Alex clapped a hand over Maria’s mouth, his eyes wide. “Please don’t finish that sentence! Ever!”

Liz laughed, then turned her attention back to the field.

<center>*************************************</center>

“They’re too fast, Maxwell!” Michael gasped, taking another sip of his drink. “#22 is running all over me!”

Max shook his head. “Nah… they’re getting tired, I can tell. I give it one more possession before they’re falling on the ground, crying like babies.”

“I hope you’re right. I don’t particularly enjoy being sat on by someone twice my size! I don’t know how much more I can take!”

Max smirked. “Come on, Mike! Didn’t those laps help you out any?” he taunted. Then a thought struck him. “Hey, did you notice that guy checking out Maria?”

He watched as Michael’s face turned red and then he glared at the opposing player across the field. “I’ll knock him on his ass!”

Max smiled and silently patted himself on the back for knowing how to handle Michael.

As the ref whistled, signaling the 4th down ending, Max and Michael ran back on the field.

Blue 22! Blue 22! Hut! Hut, hut!” Max called, holding his arms out to receive the snap.

As soon as the center released the ball, Max fell back into the protection of the pocket.

He danced around, looking for an open man down the field. Spotting Michael at the 40, he let the ball loose with a perfectly aimed toss, just as two opponents broke through the offensive line and tackled him.

Michael caught the ball and began sprinting down the field, dodging defenders left and right.

The crowd cheered and Max stared after his friend from his prone position on the ground, holding his breath as Michael gained more yardage.

Suddenly, a huge defensive linebacker appeared in front of Michael’s path and their eyes locked.

Michael growled and ran full force at the guy, tucking the ball deeper in his arms as he approached.

Just as #22 leapt to tackle him to the ground, Michael jumped over him and landed safely on the other side.

He trotted the remaining yards and slammed the ball to the ground as he reached the touchdown line.

Max threw his arms in the air and whooped, falling on his back as the West Roswell stands erupted in cheers.

Isabel and the rest of the cheerleaders ran to the end zone and began doing push-ups for the amount of points West Roswell had accumulated.

Michael ran back to the bench as the special team took the field for the extra point, receiving slaps on the back from his teammates.

When he reached Max, the two friends threw their arms around each other and hugged fiercely.

“Nice job, Mike!” Max grinned, punching his best friend playfully in the shoulder.

“Nice toss, Maxwell,” Michael smirked back, slapping him on the back.

Maria, Liz and Alex shouted for their friends as they jumped up and down, hugging each other.

That's my boyfriend!” Maria shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth. “Mik-ey!

The rest of the game went quickly, with Roswell scoring two more touchdowns, one from a quarterback sneak by Max and another with Kyle intercepting the ball and running for another six points.

At the sound of the buzzer, the score was W. Roswell 56 – E. Roswell 42.

The Comet’s had won!

The students and fans rushed the field and began congratulating the team as the losing team sulked their way back to the locker rooms.

Liz ran right into Max’s arms. “Max! You were great!” she laughed, hugging him tightly.

“I don’t know… I remember how good you used to be! I bet you could give some of those guys a run for their money!” he teased, lifting her off the ground so that her legs wrapped around his middle.

“Ha ha!” Liz giggled. “But I think I like you better in the pants anyway,” she added, giggling as Max placed a kiss on her neck.

Max’s eyes widened and then a huge grin crossed his face as Liz smiled down at him.

“Max! Good job!” Isabel called as she headed over to her brother and Liz, a smile on her face.

Maria and Alex followed close behind.

Max let Liz on the ground as he and his sister embraced. “Thanks, Iz.”

Liz gave Michael a quick hug, then caught a glimpse of a figure watching them silently, before turning to head towards the locker room.

“Kyle!” she called, breaking free of the group and following after him. “Kyle, wait!”

Kyle stopped, but didn’t turn around. Liz reached him and panted softly. “Hey, Kyle.”

Kyle slowly turned to face her and gave her a small smile. “Hey, nice jacket,” he nodded towards her.

Liz glanced down and blushed slightly as Max’s letterman jacket stared back at her. “Um… thanks. Listen, Kyle… I just wanted to make sure you’re okay. I mean, I haven’t really gotten to talk to you and I said we’d be friends and everything and-“

“I understand, Liz, really. Don’t worry about it,” Kyle interrupted. “I’ve had some time to think and I’ve come to the conclusion that you and I wouldn’t have worked, anyway.”

Liz raised an eyebrow. “You did?”

Kyle smiled. “Yeah! I’ve been studying some of Buddha’s teachings and I’ve figured some things out that have been bothering me.”

Liz simply nodded, indicating for him to continue.

“Well, Buddhist’s believe in The Four Noble Truths. And one of those Truth’s is that suffering arises from the attachment to desires. I’ve been meditating on why it bothered me so much that you chose Evans over me and then it dawned on me. You were a desire.”

Liz frowned in confusion. “Okay…”

“I was attached to you, and desired you, and that’s why I suffered after you dumped me!”

“Kyle,” Liz interrupted with a small smile, but he didn’t listen to her.

“Therefore, Buddha teaches that in order to cease my suffering, I must cease my attachment to my desire. Once I was able to do that, I was that much closer to living in harmony.”

Liz sighed, shaking her head. “Right. Okay, well, I’m glad for you! It seems like Buddhism... agrees with you.”

“Thanks, Liz. You know, it really does! I haven’t felt more enlightened since I took a moment to really think about my life and where it’s going,” Kyle admitted.

“Well that’s great, Kyle!” Liz smiled. “I’m happy for you! And you definitely seem happy so that makes me even more glad!”

She gave him a friendly hug before hearing her name being called. She turned to find Maria gesturing her to join them.

“Well, I just wanted to see how you were doing and congratulate you on the game,” Liz said.

Kyle smiled. “Thanks, I guess I’ll see you at the dance?”

“Yep, I’ll be there!”

“Cool. Well… later I guess.”

“Right…” Liz replied, backing up as she smiled. “Bye Kyle!”

She turned and started heading towards her friends when Kyle called her name. She turned and looked at him expectantly. “Yes, Kyle?”

His expression had turned serious and worried. “Um, Liz… has Tess… said anything to you lately?”

Liz made a face. “No, I haven’t seen her the last few days, thankfully. Why?” she asked curiously.

“Oh, no reason…” Kyle replied, his mind racing. Did that mean Tess had possibly given up her insane quest of getting Max back?

“Okay, well I gotta go!” Liz called.

“Sure, bye Liz.”

Kyle watched as Liz ran back to the group, cuddling up in Max’s arms as he placed a kiss on her forehead.

Maybe he should check up on Miss Harding… just in case.

“So, you and Alex are going as Kate and Leo?” Liz asked, watching as Isabel secured a red, curly wig to her head. “I thought he hated Titanic?”

“Yeah… it took some convincing, but I was able to get him to agree with me, if you know what I mean,” Isabel grinned as she ran her fingers through the long hair.

“Does it bother you that he’s going to be playing tonight?” Liz asked curiously. Somehow she didn’t think Isabel would like her boyfriend not paying attention to her during a dance.

“Yeah, it does. But it’s only for half the night and he promised me he’d dedicate a song to me so I can’t really be mad,” Isabel admitted. “Besides, I love watching him perform. He’s really talented.”

Liz nodded, thinking back to the previous day when she had witnessed Alex’s practice. “Yeah.. he is. How long has he been playing guitar?”

“Oh, well, he’s played the bass for as long as I remember… but he only started playing acoustic the past few years.”

“That’s cool. I wish I could play an instrument,” Liz sighed. “I’m really tone deaf.”

Isabel snorted as she pulled on her lacy red and black dress. “You and me both, babe! Max is definitely the one with the musical talent in this family.”

Liz perked up. “Max can play an instrument?”

“Yeah, he used to play the guitar when we were little and he can sing better than most of these pop stars, although that may not be saying much!” Isabel laughed.

Liz smiled, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. “Reeeaally. That’s interesting. I wonder why he never mentioned it to me?”

“Probably because he hates it. He absolutely refuses to get up and sing in front of people!” Isabel stopped and chuckled. “I remember when Maria found out about his singing, she drug him with her to this Karaoke bar and wanted him sing to I Feel Pretty!”

Liz gasped. “Now that’s just mean!” Then she started cracking up at the picture. Isabel soon joined her and the two were only interrupted by a loud knocking on the door.

“Are you two ready yet?” Max’s muffled voice sounded through the door.

“Sure!” Isabel called.

Liz laughed again at the thought and pulled on her jacket over her costume.

When the three reached the gymnasium, they were greeted with the sight of students decked out in various costumes all dancing wildly.

“See you guys later!” Isabel called as she headed over to where Alex and the rest of The Whit’s were setting up.

Max and Liz smiled at each other and looked around. “So… this is the infamous theme dance?” she asked, watching as a couple dressed as Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky walked by.

She and Max exchanged a look then they shrugged.

“Yep, this is the one,” Max replied, taking her hand. “Wanna dance?”

Liz smiled up at him. “Sure!”

“Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?” Max murmured as he held Liz close to him.

Liz smiled demurely, wrapping her arms tighter around his neck as she leaned in to whisper into Max’s ear.

“No, I don’t believe you have, Mr. Evans..”

Max sighed as a pleasant tingle shot through his body. “Mmm… well, you do. In fact, you look positively... scrumptious.”

Liz raised an eyebrow. “My, my…. Are you saying you want to… eat me?” She blinked innocently, sure that she had just shocked the hell out of him.

Max’s eyes widened, but he recovered nicely, flashing her a devilishly sexy smile. “Why, yes I do, Miss Parker. In fact… I think I’ll start now.”

With that, he began to nibble teasingly at her earlobe, dipping his tongue tantalizingly into her tiny cavity.

Liz shivered in pleasure as she arched her head closer to Max’s ministrations. “Oh, God, Max…”

“Whoa, whoa… let’s keep it PG here, eh kids?” Maria’s voice broke through their sexual fog. “Come on… this is a dance floor. Either dance or get the heck off!”

Max groaned in frustration at his friend. Then an idea sprang to mind. “Oh, you want to see dancing?”

With that, he pulled Liz closer to him and they began to dance provocatively as Sean Paul's Get Busy began vibrating through the gymnasium.

“Oh, my eyes, my eyes!” Maria made a show of covering her face as the two continued dirty dancing.

Liz giggled and gave Max a naughty look. “Now look what you’ve done, Max. You’ve rendered Maria speechless!”

“Enjoy it while you can, it won’t last long” he teased, then got a good look at Maria’s outfit. “Um.. Maria, where’s your costume?”

Maria blinked innocently. “What do you mean? I’m wearing it.” she replied.

Max shook his head, staring at her purple glitter pants and tie-dye shirt with the word Maria airbrushed across it. “No… that’s the shirt you got that summer in Florida. And you’ve had those pants forever! What’s up? And where’s Michael?”

Liz made a choking noise as she pointed at something over Max’s shoulder. Max’s brows furrowed and he turned, catching the smile on Maria’s face as he did so.

His eyes widened at the sight before him.

Michael was trudging towards them, dressed as a giant Hershey kiss… foil wrapper and all.

When he reached the group, he shot them all a glare, lingering on Max. “Not a damn word, Maxwell,” he threatened in a low voice.

Max’s mouth sealed tightly, though he couldn’t hide the mirth in his eyes.

“Um, guys, I thought the theme was great loves over time?” Liz asked, trying not to laugh as she stared at the Hershey Kiss label sticking out of the top of Michael’s costume.

“It is! And what greater love has there ever been than that between Maria and chocolate?” Maria asked.

Max couldn’t take it anymore. He burst out laughing, holding his sides as Michael’s face turned red.

Liz tried to hold back a chuckle, but the look on Michael’s face was too funny. She eventually cracked, too, and Michael stomped off muttering.

“Oh, look! You guys scared him away!” Maria chided, grinning widely. “I’ll be back later!”

With that, she ran off after Michael, leaving Max and Liz wheezing for breath.

“She’s gonna be the end of me!” Liz laughed.

“Did… did you see.. his face?” Max gasped. “Oh man!”

“What’s so funny, guys?” Isabel asked as she and Alex walked up. She looked at her brother and Liz in confusion as they leaned on each other trying to regain their breath.

“Oh, nothing… you’ll see,” Max assured her.

“Hey, nice costumes guys! Han and Leia?” Alex asked, nodding in approval.

Max and Liz nodded.

Just then, Michael and Maria rejoined them, only this time Michael was wearing normal clothes and Maria was pouting.

“Hey, Mike! Where’s the-“

“Don’t even think about finishing that sentence, Max,” Michael warned.

“So Max… where’s your light-saber?” Maria teased, eyeing Max’s tight black pants and vest.

Max rolled his eyes. “It’s a blaster, Maria. I don’t have a light-saber. I’m Han Solo.”

Maria nodded, then looked confused. “Oh… why not? I thought all the Jedi’s had light-sabers?”

“I’m not a Jedi! I’m Han So-“

“Forget it, Max, she’s never seen Star Wars,” Michael smirked.

“I have too!” Maria said indignantly. “I’ve seen the one with the big fat lard guy!”

“Return of the Jedi?” Liz supplied helpfully.

“Yes! That one, see there!” Maria cried triumphantly.

“Yeah, and you fell asleep ten minutes into the movie,” Michael shot back, folding his arms over his chest.

“Fine! So I’m not Miss Science Fiction Fan, Michael! Gimme a break!” Maria frowned.

“Well, I think Liz looks great as the lovely Princess Leia,” Alex grinned. “In fact, the hair weaves over the ears suits you.”

Liz smiled. “Why, thank you, Leo.”

Alex bowed low. “No problem… and if we’re ever on a sinking ship, I would give my spare piece of driftwood to you any day!”

“Hey, Alex…. I need to talk to you about that… thing… I needed to talk to you about,” Max broke in suddenly.

Alex gave him a weird look. “Huh?”

“You know… the thing…” Max wiggled his eyebrows up and down and Alex’s eyes widened in understanding.

“Oh… Oh! Right! Um… follow me. We’re about to start anyway,” Alex motioned for Max to follow him as he headed towards the stage.

“Well, I guess that’s my cue!” Maria chirped, as she planted a kiss on Michael’s cheek then trotted off to join the rest of the Whit’s on stage.

“Is everything ready for tonight?” Max asked nervously, rubbing his hands together.

“Yeah… when you give the word,” Alex replied, tuning his bass. “Max… are you sure you want to do this? I mean, I heard about that time-“

“I’m sure,” Max interrupted, his eyes lighting up as he caught sight of Liz and his sister laughing together. “I’m definitely sure.”

Alex chuckled as he saw the star-struck look in his friend’s eye. “Man, you’ve got it bad!”

Max smiled broadly. “That I do, Alex. That I do.”
