Part 20
Liz sat at a table in the corner of the cafeteria picking at her breakfast of a toasted bagel with cream cheese and an apple. She wasn't really hungry but knew she had to eat something. She was lost in thought and didn't notice when someone came up to her until they spoke.
"Elizabeth Parker?"
Liz looked up to see Miss Toloposki standing by the table.
"Yes." Said Liz
"I'm Miss Toloposki."
"I know who you are ma'am."
"Then you also know that I am one of the councilors here."
"Yes."
"I was informed of what happened last night."
"The whole school seems to know."
"Well, I was wondering if you would like to go to my office and talk about it?"
"Uh, I should. But there are some other things that I need to talk about with you too."
"OK. What do you say an hour from now my office?"
"Sure."
"Liz, anything you tell me in my office unless it could harm you or others will stay between us."
"I understand."
"Ok see you in an hour. You know where my office is right?"
"Yes Miss Toloposki."
Miss Toloposki left and Liz started to get ready to leave. She had just pulled on her coat when Max walked up to her.
"Hey you ok?" Asked Max
"Yeah. Thanks again for helping me last night."
"No problem."
"Max, I got to go."
"Wait Liz?"
"What Max?"
"I was wondering if we could meet up for lunch later?"
"Max, while I am greatful that you protected me last night, I am still mad about your bet."
"I am sorry about that."
"I know and I do forgive you. But you still have to prove to me that I am not just some conquest. That if I were to give myself to you that you wouldn't just dump me after you got what you wanted."
"Well Miss Parker, I guess I will have to find away to prove it to you."
Liz looked at him and could see that he had a very determined look in his very soulful eyes. But it didn't scare her. She gave him a smile and hoped that he really did mean it.
"Oh by the way Happy New Year Liz." Max then turn and walked off to get his breakfast.
"Happy New Year Max."
*******
Liz walked into Miss Toloposki's office. Her heavy winter coat unzipped and pulling off her knit hat.
"Come on in Liz." Said Miss Toloposki
Liz came in and took off her coat. She sat down in one of the big over stuffed chairs. Miss Toloposki sat in the one across from her.
"I read in your file that after your sister died you went to a psychologist."
"Yeah. Could talk to them though."
"Why is that?"
"My father wouldn't leave me alone with him. All he wanted was me to be drugged."
"You really believe that?"
"Yeah. He has never been proud of me for anything. I have won all kinds of awards in school for my writing and he has never been happy for me. He couldn't stop praising my sister for what she did."
"How has this made you feel?"
"It hurts. I don't understand how he could love my sister but not me. How Jess could do no wrong in his eyes but I could do no right."
"Your father has never given you any praise?"
"No. My mom and sister were always proud of things I did."
"So were you and your sister close?"
"Very. Jess, was great. She was three years older then me. But she never saw me as a pest. In fact there were times she would take me with her to her friend's house when the only choice was to leave me with my father."
"What did her friends say about it?"
"They weren't happy. But they put up with it cause they knew that Jess would go off alone with me then stay with them."
"How did you feel when Jessica died?"
"I was hurt, angry, upset. She was my best friend. The one person I knew would always be there for me. She was the one I asked about boys when I started to like them. Don't get me wrong. My mom she always showed me love and support. She would stand up to my father when he put me down."
Liz spent the next hour talking about her home life with Miss Toloposki.
