The Safe House (AU, M/L, Adult) Ch 38, 11/27/12

Fics using the characters from Roswell, but where the plot does not have anything to do with aliens, nor are any of the characters "not of this Earth."

Title: The Safe House
Author: Ilonka.Green
Disclaimer: I own nothing from Roswell (characters, etc.).
Pairings: Mainly M/L
Rating: Adult
Category: AU without aliens

Summary:

Growing up in Roswell Liz Parker was anything but popular… Always standing in the shadows of everyone else, fantasizing about her so-called secret crush, the most popular boy in school, Max Evans.

Like most kids, Liz couldn’t wait to leave town and at the age of eighteen with the encouragement of her family and friends, Maria and Alex, Liz applied to and was accepted into the School of the Arts in New York where she hoped to achieve her dream.

Four years later, Liz is a successful theater actress and professional dancer. Having starred in several Broadway productions and performed in several Vegas shows, she is anything but happy. With the stress of her career and the dwindling relationship with her boyfriend, Sean it’s time for a change.

Maria and Alex suggest applying for a job at The Safe House, one of the trendiest clubs in Vegas… A place unlike no other that has something for everyone including Max Evans.

Desperate to create a new life for herself, Liz will do anything. But, how far will she go?

Author’s Note: This is my first story, so let me know what you think. I’m rating it adult mainly due to content. This story also contains small sections pertaining to abuse (physical, emotional, verbal)… As some may find this difficult to read about, I will indicate this at the beginning of those chapters.

The Safe House

A Matter of Opinion…

Max Evans:

Owning the Safe House with my sister Isabel is a dream come true. Not only is it one of the trendiest club settings on the Vegas strip, it’s a place that has something to offer everyone and sometimes a place where dreams come true. So, what makes it different from the other clubs? The Safe House has everything from a tattoo parlor, wedding chapel and gift shop to strip clubs, bars, a casino, restaurant, and dance club along with live entertainment and a VIP lounge; all which was made possible with the help of my family and friends from Roswell.

Isabel Evans-Whitman:

Owning the Safe House with my brother is awesome… It’s a dream come true. With something to offer everyone, it’s become one of the trendiest clubs on the strip. It’s also a real pleasure to be working with everyone because we’ve become a family of sorts… A family who keeps an eye out for one another.

Ava Delaney:

I love working behind the scenes at the Safe House as Max and Isabel’s personal assistant. I am the eyes and ears of the place and know about everything that goes on. Max and Isabel are both awesome to work for because they encourage employee morale and treat everyone as equals giving them the respect that they deserve.

Alex Whitman:

What can I say? If it weren’t for Max hiring me, I wouldn’t have met my wife, Isabel; Max’s sister. The Safe House is an awesome place to work. And as the Manager of the casino, I have to say, it’s an awesome place to hang out.

Maria DeLuca:

The Safe House… It’s an amazing place to work and I love it because working here has given me the opportunity to expand my horizons in the entertainment industry as the entertainment coordinator. Not only that, I’m working with my friends from Roswell and through the years, we’ve become a family of sorts. How awesome is that? Totally awesome… But what’s more awesome is the fact that I work here with my boyfriend, Michael.

Michael Guerin:

Working at the Safe House has been a life saver… Still is. Not only was being hired as the Restaurant Manager and Executive Chef fresh out of culinary school is a dream come true, but it keeps me out of trouble. Max and Isabel see to it. Everyone here is a family of sorts… A family of misfits who look after one another. I guess that’s why I fit in so well. Did I mention I work here with my girlfriend, Maria? Another added perk if you ask me.

Kyle Valenti:

The Safe House has something for everyone which is what I like about the place. It makes it unique. And being one of the trendiest clubs on the strip, being a security guard keeps me busy. I especially enjoy working the floors catching glimpses of my wife, Serena serving drinks at the bar while ensuring nobody steps out of line.

Courtney Pasgel:

Omigod… I love bartending here at the Safe House. With flexible hours, the pay is great and the tips are better. And most everyone is so nice. From the outside, it looks like a typical club on the Vegas strip, but once inside… Wow, it’s amazing. There’s so much to see and do. A person can spend all day here and not get bored… And some do while my friend Kyle keeps an eye on things ensuring everyone’s safety.

Serena Valenti:

As Bar Manager, I can honestly say the Safe House is the place to be. Everyone that’s anyone hangs out here thus making it one of the trendiest clubs on the Vegas strip. My favorite part? The fact that I’m working here with all my friends from Roswell… We make such a great team.

Pam Troy:

Being a stripper at the Safe House is amazing because I’m given the opportunity to be creative with my dance moves on stage; creating my own routines. I even get to design my own costumes if I want. How cool is that? The men in the audience are respectable for the most part and are more than happy to part with their money. Safety is also not an issue as security is tight… Another plus.

Tess Harding:

I consider myself fortunate to be working as a stripper at the Safe House. Max and Isabella not only provide a clean environment, but a safe one as well. I like it here because I’m not frowned upon because of my profession. In fact, everyone is treated equally with the respect they deserve no matter what their job is.

Prologue

New York: Lund Fontanne Theater, 2 months ago…

The curtain closed. The audience stood applauding. “Bravo… Bravo…” A few audience members shouted out. The curtain opened again and the cast members came forward to take their bows.
********************************************
Trudging back to her dressing room backstage, Liz was bombarded by her friends Kenya and Jackye. “Great show, Liz! Did you see the two bombshells sitting in the second row?”

“No, I wasn’t paying attention.” Following Liz into her dressing room, the trio lounged on the couch taking a moment to rest. She sighed. It was typical of Kenya and Jackye to notice the gorgeous, unobtainable guys. “They’re probably gay… Either that engaged or married.”

“There you are, Liz… You were fantastic out there on stage.” Not taking notice of their audience, Liz’s boyfriend Sean pulled her out of her seat, wrapping his arms around her waist claiming her lips for a sloppy kiss.

Pushing at his chest, Liz broke away. “Um… Thanks, Sean. So were you and all the others.”

Stepping into the bathroom, she changed out of her costume, as her mind began to wander. If only Max Evans could see me now. Lost in thought Liz remembered the last time she was home visiting her parents. Hanging out with her friends, Maria and Alex at the Crash Down, they spotted Max Evans and his sister, Isabel sitting in a booth. Max looked over at them with questioning eyes, but said nothing.
******************************************
Later that Night: Liz’s condo…

Exhausted, Liz sat down at her computer desk and stared at the computer monitor as she checked her e-mail. Just then, she realized she hadn’t sent a reply to her friend, Maria’s e-mail. Without giving it much thought, she began to compose her message to Maria.

Hey, Maria.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you… I’ve just been so busy with “Statue Maker.” Tonight was opening night and it was an absolute success! Despite the fact that “Statue Maker” is a new musical, everybody loved it. The characters are so realistic that everyone can relate to them in one way or another. The plot… Makes the audience believe that anything is possible, including true love. And the scenery… Absolutely breath taking.

Only two more months to go… Two more months of singing, dancing, acting, and performing my own stunts. I truly love the character I portray, but I will be extremely glad when the play comes to an end because I’m getting too old to be doing my own stunts (which I’m known for). When the show comes to an end, I can put my theater career behind me and move on with my life.

I’ve portrayed so many characters during my career that I no longer know who I am as a person anymore. It seems like I don’t have a life anymore. Although I have friends here in New York and the surrounding area, I seldom have the time to see any of them except for Kenya, a fellow actress who lives in my building. I feel so alone sometimes. I need a change… Change is a good thing, or so I’m told. It’s time I move on with my life and try new things. What? I don’t know. I guess I’d like to start by just being myself and for once live a normal life.

I know what you’re thinking. What about Sean? Sean’s always thrived off of my success using our relationship as a way to boost his career. I’m thinking it’s time to break things off with him too but I’m afraid to. He does after all have a bit of a temper and God knows how he’d react. Oh well, I gotta do what’s best for me.

Talk to you again soon,

- Liz -

Just then, Liz’s phone rang, but was too tired to answer it. Who would be calling at this hour? she wondered looking at the clock on her nightstand. She listened for the machine. “Hello, you’ve reached my machine. You know the routine. At the beep.” The caller hung up. Why can’t I just sit at home without being interrupted?

Sending her e-mail and turning off her computer, she reached up and pulled the long, black wig off her head before heading off to bed.

Tossing and turning, Liz tried desperately to fall asleep but images of Max Evans kept appearing in her mind. Glancing at the clock, she noticed it was already 3:00 am and sighed. Why can’t I stop thinking of him? He doesn’t even know I exist.

Pacing into the home office, Liz sat down and turned on her computer. “You’ve got mail.” the computerized voice announced. She smiled. Opening her e-mail, Liz found an e-mail from Maria.

Subject: RE: My so-called life

Hey, Chica.

You’re still with Sean! I thought you dropped that loser months ago. Why are you still with him? He’s doing nothing but bringing you down. Believe me when I say you can do so much better… Even Alex would agree.

Congrats on the success of your new theater production. Wish I could have been there to see you steal the show (lol!). Did you get the flowers Alex and I sent?

What’s this about you retiring from the theater? It’s your life… You’re lifelong dream. But, it’s your choice. Just be sure to do some serious thinking about it and weighing the pros and cons before doing so.

Have you given any thought to moving out here to Vegas? Max and Isabel are always looking to hire new people to join the staff here at the Safe House; and with your background, you’d be a total asset to the club. If you haven’t, you should seriously consider it because it’s an amazing place to work.

No matter what you decide, YOU NEED TO TOSS SEAN TO THE CURB!

Keep me posted as to what’s going on.

Take care,

- Maria –

P.S. Be sure to watch ‘Night Life’ tomorrow night… Leslie Gutenberg’s interview with Max and Isabel should be airing along with the tour segment of the Safe House. (Hint, hint…)

She rolled her eyes. Could Maria be any more obvious? Her and Alex had been trying for years to get her to come for a visit them at the Safe House, but something always came up. And now, she had no excuse not to. Or did she?

Another Liz chapter. I promise though, Liz & Max will be meeting up within the next few chapters.

Chapter 1 / Part 1

(Interview)

New York: Lund Fontanne Theater, the following afternoon…

Leslie Gutenberg arrived at the Lund Fontanne Theater earlier than expected and following the news truck and camera crew behind the building, parked her car next to a green Impala near what appeared to be the backstage door. Surveying the surrounding area, she sighed. Why is it that I always get the theater jobs? I don’t even like the performing arts.

Stepping out of her car with microphone in hand, she called to the camera man. “Let’s get going. The sooner we get started, the sooner we can go back to the hotel.”

Bustling from the equipment truck on command, the camera man grabbed his hand held camera and double checked to make sure it was loaded and ready to go. “Ready when you are, Leslie.”

“Great. Here’s what we’re going to do… I’m going to do the introduction from this door,” she started pointing behind her to the backstage door. “Then, you’re going to follow me inside as I give a brief history about the theater walking towards the stage…” She paused. “Any questions so far?” Not waiting for an answer, she continued. “From there, I’m going to interview the entire cast in order of appearance, talking briefly about their personal lives, the characters they portray, and their thoughts about the play. After that, we’re going outside to the front of the building to redo the introduction…”

It didn’t make sense. “Um… Why are we redoing the introduction after the interview segment? Wouldn’t it be easier to just begin filming from the front of the building?”

“No! We’re parked by the backstage door. We start here.”

“Okay… Sorry I said anything. Let’s get started…”

“Leslie Gutenberg here reporting to you live from outside the Lund Fontanne Theater here in New York where in just a few minutes I will be sitting down to talk with none other than the cast of ‘Statue Maker’, the new Broadway production that became an instant sensation overnight…”

Entering via the backstage door with her camera man, the duo walked through a dimly lit corridor towards the theater as Leslie kept talking about the history of the theater. Suddenly, she stopped as the camera man turned his camera on the stage. There on stage was Liz Parker doing a handstand and back flip on a wooden straight back chair while some of her fellow cast members talked quietly amongst themselves. Omigod… What is Liz Parker doing? Is that… Omigod… She’s doing what appears to be a stripper dance fully clothed! What the?!?

An uneasy feeling came upon Liz. They were early. Dismounting from the chair, she pushed it aside. God, I hope that didn’t get this on camera. Maria and Alex will never let me live it down. “Um… Sorry you had to see that. We weren’t expecting you until a bit later…”

“Leslie Gutenberg from Night Life…”

“Liz Parker. Allow me to introduce you to my fellow cast members…” One by one the cast members approached Leslie introducing themselves welcoming her to the theater.

“Some of us arrived early to set everything up. All you need to do is set up your equipment. We even brought old videos and photos in case you need extra material.” Liz mentioned nervously. Why am I so nervous? Were Max and Isabel this nervous when they were interviewed?

“Great. I’ll be interviewing everyone in order of appearance in the play, except for you and Sean. Both of you are last because you’re the stars.” Leslie stated walking around the stage looking for the best camera angle. Stepping up onto the stage, she began giving orders to the camera man. “Is there a way for some of the props to be incorporated into the photo shoot?”

Liz thought for a minute. “Everything is already set up for the next show. My only suggestion would be to use the furniture from that scene instead of the chairs you had originally requested.”

“Hmmm… I suppose that is doable.”
*******************************************************
The interviews went quicker than anticipated. The cast discussed everything from their acting careers, their thoughts on “Statue Maker” and the characters they played. They also joked around a bit with each other. To add interest, Leslie asked them perform small portions of the first scene utilizing the props available. Finally, it was time for the last interview… Liz Parker.

“Are you ready to go, Liz?”

“I guess so. What do you want me to do first? Sing… Dance… Recite a few lines,” Liz asked walking out on stage a bit nervous being it was her first interview for a popular national entertainment TV program.

Sensing her nervousness, the camera man offered her words of encouragement. “Everything’s going to be okay. For the time being, just sit on the chair by the end table and wait for Leslie’s introduction. Then, look at Leslie and tell her about yourself.” Still nervous, Liz took a seat in the chair and waited for further instruction. “Okay, Liz. Wait for Leslie’s introduction and the first question…”

As if on cue, Leslie introduced Liz Parker mentioning the character she portrayed. “It’s public knowledge that you grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. Tell me, how did you get into dancing and acting?”

Liz smiled. It was a typical question that was asked over and over during newspaper and magazine interviews. One would think it would be public knowledge. Obviously, it wasn't. “Growing up in Roswell, I took up dancing at the age of four when I was enrolled in my first class, which was ballet. Although I kept up with ballet through the years, I expanded my horizons by also taking tap, jazz, ballroom and street dancing classes…” she started.

But, Leslie interrupted. “Impressive. But, did you see yourself becoming a professional?”

“Although dancing is a passion of mine, my real dream was to become a theater actress.”

“Interesting… Most kids dream of becoming doctors, a professional athlete, etc., yet you dreamed of becoming a theater actress. Where did this dream stem from?”

“I was about twelve years old when I fell in love with the theater. A good friend and I snuck into a local community theater to see a performance of ‘Cats’. From that day on, I was hooked… I dreamed of being on stage performing for large crowds with my name in lights.”

“You landed your first role as Juliet in the Broadway production of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ shortly after graduating from the School of the Arts here in New York. What was that like?”

“Normally, the leading rolls are given to well-known actors and actresses, so I was honored to have been cast as the lead in that production. Being on stage for the first time is an experience I’ll never forget.”

“Out of all the characters you portrayed, which is the most memorable and why?”

Liz chuckled. “The most memorable was definitely being cast as the show girl, Roxie in ‘Dancing Queen’ two years ago.” She paused. “Out of all the characters I’ve portrayed, it’s the most memorable because not only did I have to learn to dance like a show girl, I had to talk with professional show girls and watch a show to get a real feel for the character I was to be portraying. It was interesting to say the least.”

“Aside from acting, you’ve also performed in a few shows in Las Vegas. How did you get involved in that?"

“Shortly after ‘Dancing Queen’ came to an end, my agent was approached by a casting director from a theater in Vegas. Having seen me in ‘Dancing Queen’, the director was impressed with my dancing ability and asked if I would be interested in preforming in a show with a short run. One show led to another and before I know it, I performed in four different shows.”

“Yet, you returned to acting. Why?”

“Acting has always been my real passion.”

Talking with Leslie Gutenberg for a bit longer, the camera man gave the two minute signal as Leslie finished up the interview thanking Liz for her time.

“And that’s a wrap,” the camera man stated. “You did great, Liz.”

“Thanks.”

Backstage…

Seeing Leslie Gutenberg and the camera man out, Liz thanked them for stopping by the theater before walking backstage to her dressing room to change back into her street clothes. Closing the door, she stepped into the bathroom to remove her make-up and fix her hair.

Suddenly the dressing room door flew open.

“How could you!” Sean shouted.

“How could I what?” Liz shouted back. “I did what everyone else did… Participated in yet another interview.”

“You know very well what I’m talking about,” Sean replied pushing Liz back against a wall. Hitting the wall, she crumbled to the floor.

“No, I don’t,” Liz shouted back.

Lashing out in rage, Sean raised his hand slapping Liz across the face leaving a red handprint on her cheek. He continued shouting, “Yes you do, Liz… You were flirting with the camera guy!”

“I was not,” Liz stuttered as tears began to well up in her eyes.

“You are such a liar, Liz. You know you were and you enjoyed every minute of it,” Sean added kicking Liz several times before opening the door. “It’s over, Liz. Run to your lover… He’s nothing compared to me. You were lucky to have me.” And with that, Sean flung the door open, stormed down the hall and out the backstage door leaving. Crying, Liz sat up clutching her stomach in pain.
****************************************************
“Hey, Liz… Are you ready to head…” Kenya asked poking her head in. “Omigod, Liz! Are you okay? What happened?” Hurrying across the room to where Liz sat clutching her stomach, she embraced her friend.

“Is he gone?” Liz quietly asked as if afraid to speak.

“Is who gone?”

“Sean…s Is he gone?”

“I didn’t see him anywhere around. He must have left…” Then it dawned on her. “Sean did this to you, didn’t he?”

“He did,” Liz whispered.

Everyone knew Sean had a temper. Yet he seemed in good spirits earlier, so what happened? “Talk to me… What happened?”

“He… He accused me of flirting with the camera guy.” Liz stated wiping the tears from her eyes.

“It’s okay, he’s gone. Let’s get you up.” Standing up, Kenya helped Liz to her feet. “Now, let’s get you in the bathroom to check for bruises… Do you need help with your make-up and hair?”

“Don’t bother. I’m just going to sit around and watch TV tonight.”

“Okay. Do you need help with anything else?”

“I don’t think so. But, can you grab my clothes for me?”

“Sure. You get dressed then and I’ll drive you home.”

“Thanks, Kenya.”

Chapter 1, Part 2

(The Plan)

Liz’s condo: That evening…

Helping Liz into her condo, Kenya tossed Liz’s tote bag and purse onto the floor by the table in the foyer. “Why don’t you go take a hot shower and change your clothes? It’ll make you feel better.”

“No, I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not fine. Need I remind you that Sean kicked you in the stomach? You need to relax and take something for the pain. Now, off you go to the bathroom…” Gently turning Liz, she nudged her in the direction of the bathroom. “Oh, and Liz… I’m going to make you something to eat. What are you in the mood for?”

Liz wasn’t hungry, but Kenya was determined so it was pointless to argue. ”Just order in… Menus are in the same spot as always. Whatever you want is fine with me.”

“Okay… Pizza it is…”

“Yeah, whatever… I’ll be back in five…”

“Make that fifteen. You need to unwind.”

Popping out from around a corner, Liz stuck her tongue out at her. Kenya chuckled. “Don’t go sticking your tongue out at me, Parker… Save it for prince charming.”
*****************************************************
An hour later, Kenya and Liz were sitting in front of the TV eating the veggie pizza Kenya had ordered waiting for ‘Night Life’ to come on. “So, what’s the location this time?”

“According to my friend, Maria it should be the segment Leslie Gutenberg did on the Safe House out in Vegas.”

“Isn’t that were your friends work?”

“It is…”
*****************************************************
Coming up on Night Life…Leslie Gutenberg visits the Safe House and sits down to talk business with Max Evans and his sister, Isabel Evans-Whitman...

“Leslie Gutenberg here reporting to you live from outside the Safe House here in downtown Las Vegas where in just a few minutes I will be sitting down to talk with none other than Max Evans and his sister, Isabel Evans-Whitman, owners of one of the trendiest clubs here on the strip…”

Walking up to the doors to the main entrance, she’s greeted by Kyle who checks everyone’s guest passes before admitting them inside where everyone is greeted by none other than Max and Isabel Evans.

“Max, Isabel… Leslie Gutenberg from Night Life…”

“Welcome to the Safe House, Leslie.” Isabel greeted her. “Why don’t we go sit in the restaurant,” she suggested.

Sitting down at a table near the bar, the trio was immediately served a pitcher of ice water with chilled glasses while waiting for the camera crew to set up.

“Ready when you are, Leslie…” the camera man stated. She smiled signaling they were ready.

“I’m sitting here at the infamous El Flamingo restaurant with none other than Max and Isabel Evans, owners of the Safe House…” she paused. “Max, Isabel… The Safe House is an unusual name for a club on the strip. How did it get its name?”

Isabel smiled. “The building itself actually dates back to the mid 1940’s when the mob ruled the city from the underground and organized crime was the talk of the city. Originally owned by the mob the building got its name the Safe House because it was designed with sex, drugs, drinking, and gambling in mind… Everything that Sin City was known for that many despised…”

Max continued. “But, because it was owned by the mob, the building was also designed as a hideout of sorts containing underground tunnels, hidden passageways and rooms off limits to the public where mob members met to discuss and plan their next crime spree, stolen goods were sorted and money was often counted; thus, making it a safe house to conduct business.”

“Wow, what a history the building has. Now, the building stood empty for five years before it was condemned and scheduled to be torn down four years ago. Yet, knowing this, you purchased the building. Why?”

Both Max and Isabel smiled. “The Safe House was legendary back in the day… It was the place where men and women could let loose, have fun and do so freely.” Isabel started.

“We were saddened when the Safe House closed its doors because it played an important role in making Sin City what it once was…” Taking a sip of his water, Max paused. “Owning a club on the Vegas strip has always been a dream of ours, so we purchased the building.”

“But why wait until the building was condemned and scheduled to be raised?”

“We were in college at the time the Safe House closed,” Isabel started to explain. “Hearing the Safe House was condemned and scheduled to be raised was a heartbreaker because we always envisioned owning a club like how it once was…”

“It would have been next to impossible to design and build a structure to replicate what once was, since we wanted our club to have the same vibe the Safe House did back in the day. So, after much talk, we risked everything and purchased the building,” Max added.

“Since the building was purchased, you’ve obviously remodeled to include modern amenities but kept the history of the building intact. What was added to make your club unique compared to the other clubs?”

“In keeping with the history of the building, we have two strip clubs, a restaurant/bar, casino, and entertainment hall where we bring in live acts daily,” Isabel paused taking a sip of her water. “During the remodeling process, we’ve added a tattoo parlor, wedding chapel, gift shop, dance club, and VIP lounge…”

“The rooms upstairs were turned into condos and penthouses,” Max added but was quick to point out the lack of a hotel. “Would you like a tour?”

“That would be great…”

Walking around on each floor, Max and Isabel opened doors to businesses that were closed giving Leslie and the camera man a peek inside each before moving on to those that were already open for the day.

- First Floor: The El Flamingo (bar/restaurant), The Viper Room (tattoo parlor), Pure (gift shop), The Love Shack (wedding chapel) & Deuces Wild (casino/bar)
- Second Floor: The Rave (entertainment hall/bar), & Club Anything (dance club/bar w/ DJ)
- Third Floor: 69 (Gentlemen’s Club), & Perfect Poison (Women’s Club)
- Fourth Floor: Cloud 9 (VIP Lounge/bar)
- Fifth Floor: (4 condos)
- Sixth – Seventh Floors: (2 Penthouses)

“I’m impressed. But I gotta know… Are either of you actively involved in running the businesses in this amazing building?”

Both Isabel and Max smiled. “Besides walking the floors mingling with visitors, I’m also the Manager of both 69 (gentlemen’s club) and the Viper Room (tattoo parlor) and a tattoo artist,” Max explained.

“And I’m the Manager of both Perfect Poison (ladies club) and Pure (gift shop),” Isabel added.

“Sounds like you’re always busy…”

“That we are, but we like it that way.”
*****************************************************
Liz was impressed. It was everything Maria and Alex described and so much more. But could she see herself working in an establishment like that?

Kenya let out a low whistle. “That’s some club, isn’t it? Maybe we should take a weekend trip out to Vegas. Do you think your friends could get us a personal invite?”

Liz smiled. “They’ve been trying to get me to come out and visit them in Vegas for years...”

“So, why didn’t you? They are your friends after all…”

“I know. But, I have my reasons.”

Sensing Liz’s sudden discomfort, Kenya changed the subject. “So, have you given any thought about what you’re going to do about Sean?”

“There’s nothing I can do. I report him to the cops and he sweet talks his way out of things every time. And I can’t file for a restraining order because we’re both starring in the same theater production.” She sighed.

Kenya thought for a minute. “Wait a minute… Weren’t you thinking of retiring when the run of ‘Statue Maker’ comes to an end?”

“Not thinking about it… I am. Why?”

“Why don’t you move to Vegas? I’m sure if you talked to your friends they could even get you a job at the club either bartending or dancing… You’d be rid of Sean and if planned right, he’d have no idea where you moved to.”

“That’s what Maria suggested the other night. According to her, Max and Isabel are always looking for new people to join their staff at the club.”

“Well, there you go then… The perfect solution.”

“You are forgetting a few things… I haven’t tended bar since college and I’m only licensed here in New York, so bartending in Las Vegas would be out of the question. The last time I danced in a show in Vegas was years ago. Then, there’s my condo… I’d still need to lease out or sell my condo and find a place to live in Vegas.”

Kenya frowned. Liz was afraid of being carefree and living her own life… Sean saw to that. “No problem… You could always enroll in Bartending School in Las Vegas. As for dancing, you’re a professional. With a little practice, you could be back in the lime light in no time…” she explained. “And I’m sure if you talked with Maria and Alex, they could help you find a place to live.”

“I don’t know, Kenya. It’s an awful lot to ask of everyone… Besides, how would I go about clearing out my condo without anyone noticing?”

“You have almost two months. Rent a storage locker under my name, then pack and move a little bit at a time into storage. Then, when the time comes and you have a place to live, give me a call and I’ll arrange to have it all shipped to you under my name. Nobody would have a clue.”

“And then what? I’d have nothing but an empty condo here in New York…”

“I could help you with that as well… You’d just need to decide if you want to lease it out or sell it.”

Just a fluff chapter in which the friends discuss Liz's future plans.

Chapter 2:

Subject: NEWS FLASH

Hi, guys.

My friend, Kenya and I watched the segment on the Safe House on ‘Night Life’ earlier this evening. I knew the building was old, but had no clue as to the actual history of the building. All I can say is WOW! The video clips during the tour segment were exactly how you described it and then some. Have either of you been through the secret passage ways and underground tunnels? I bet they’re just as awesome!

So what’s new and exciting? For starters, Leslie Gutenberg from ‘Night Life’ was at the Lund Fontanne Theater earlier today interviewing us (the cast) of ‘Statue Maker’ and filming a tour of the theater. According to Leslie, the segment should be airing next week, so be sure to watch it.

In other news, Sean and I had another fight. He accused me of flirting with the camera man shortly after everyone left (unbelievable!)… To make a long story short, we’re through. I DIDN’T HAVE TO KICK HIM TO THE CURB because he broke up with me! Can you believe it? All because I supposedly flirted with the camera man from ‘Night Life’ (which by the way, I did not).

On the retirement front, I’ve reached a decision but I’m going to need a little help from my friends – You, Alex, & Kenya (does this sound like a Beatle’s song or what? j/k)… After much thinking, I’ve decided to move to Las Vegas! That’s right… VEGAS BABY! (okay, I’m over it). Anyways, as I’m crunched for time and cannot leave New York due to the show, I was wondering if you could start scouting out places to live and keep an eye out (ears open) for anyone looking to hire a dancer or cocktail waitress… I could also bartend, but I’d have to first get licensed in Las Vegas (currently, I’m only licensed in New York). If either of you need a copy of my resume, drop me a line. I can e-mail or fax it to you. And if anyone requests setting up an interview, contact me immediately so I can check my schedule (as my arrival date might change) before setting anything up for me.

So, what’s the initial game plan? As I have two months left before the show ends, I’ll start clearing out the condo packing things for storage as I go. Then, with the help of Kenya, I’ll rent a storage locker and move my belongings to the locker. I figure I’ll probably be driving out to Vegas within the first week after the show ends and hotel it for a while. Once I find a place to live, I’ll either call or e-mail Kenya who will then make the necessary arrangements for my belongings to be shipped. In the meantime, Kenya has agreed to either find someone to lease my condo or put it up for sale (my choice) in my absence.

Phew… That’s a lot. My head is spinning thinking about all that I have to accomplish within the next few weeks.

Not much else new and exciting here.

Take care,

Liz

Omigod! Did you read the e-mail from Liz? SHE’S MOVING TO VEGAS! I’m so psyched. Are you thinking Poker night or is it just me?

Anyways, she’s going to be needing a place to live and a place to work. What do you think about mentioning to Max & Isabel that Liz is moving to Vegas & looking for a job?

Maria

Maria-

Yes, I read the e-mail and I think it’s great that’s she’s moving out here. However, I think there’s more to the story than what she’s letting on… I’m guessing it has something to do with Sean.

As for talking to Max and Isabel about Liz looking for a job, I think it’s a great idea. With her experience and talent, she’d be a great asset to the club. We’ll just need to find the time to sit down with them (preferably both at the same time).

Are you going to be calling Liz anytime soon? If yes, then I won’t call. Either way, we’re going to need more details regarding the type of place (condo or apartment), price range, & location before we begin searching for her.

Alex

P.S. Poker night is a must! Maybe I’ll talk to Max & Isabel to see if we could use the casino during the off time (when it’s closed). Wouldn’t that be awesome? Think of all the possibilities for outlandish bets (lol!)

I’ll call her sometime next week for the details.

Hmmm… Now that you mention it, I think you may be on to something. And if anyone can get her to talk, it’s me. So, I’m on it. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

As for Poker night, why didn’t I think of using the casino (probably because I’m not the Casino Manager – lol!) The possibility of outlandish bets is endless. Hmmm… Maybe we could even get Liz to go down to the Viper Room and have Max give her a tattoo?

Omigod! I’m so excited! Alex and I can hardly wait to see you again. We’ll have to have a Poker night sometime soon after you move… It’ll be like old times (outlandish bets and all).

I talked with Alex and he said searching for a place for you will be no problem. Either he or I will call you sometime next week for details (i.e. condo/apartment, price range, location, etc.). We’ll also keep our eyes and ears out for anyone with job openings.

Question? Would it be okay if Alex and I mention to Max & Isabel that you’re moving to town and looking for a job? If anyone would have a job opening for a dancer / cocktail waitress (maybe even bartender), the Safe House would. Let me know.

Is there anything else you need us to do for you? I’m only asking because I know you’re lacking in home economic skills (that is after all why you have a cleaning lady & cook at your condo in NY). If you want, I can ask my boyfriend, Michael to teach you the basics of cooking (he’s the Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager here at the Safe House) and if you need help unpacking, we (Alex & I) could easily ask some of our friends to help (the more, the merrier).

I’m psyched that you’re going to be on ‘Night Life’ next week. Alex and I will be sure to have at least one TV (probably in a bar) tuned in so we can watch the segment and then brag that we know you.

Take care,

Maria

I’m happy to hear that you’re moving out here to Vegas. It’ll be like old times (except for the fact that we’re not in Roswell & we’re now of legal age). With that said, I think we need to have a Poker night sometime soon after you arrive… Maybe I can convince Max & Isabel to let us have use of the casino during an off time (when it’s closed).

Searching for a place for you shouldn’t be a problem. Either Maria or I will call you sometime next week for more details. We’ll also scout out possible job openings for you, although I think Maria and I could talk Max & Isabel into talking with you… They are after all always looking to hire new people to add to the staff and with all your experience; you’d be a real asset to the club.

You mentioned you’ll be on ‘Night Life’ with your fellow cast members from ‘Statue Maker’… Your first TV interview! Congrats. Maria and I will be sure to watch it and knowing Maria the patrons in at least one bar will be too.

Talk to you soon,

Alex

Kenya-

Just an e-mail to let you know I e-mailed both Maria and Alex in Vegas to let them know about the upcoming move. Both are godsends… They’ve agreed to start searching for a place for me and scouting out possible jobs. Maria even offered to talk to her boyfriend (Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager at the Safe House) to see if he could teach me the basics of cooking if I’m interested in learning. She even mentioned her & Alex could ask some of their friends to help me unpack when my things arrive… The more the merrier she says. Personally, I’m not so sure about that.

I’m laughing because both have decided we need to have a Poker night soon after my arrival… Alex is thinking of asking Max & Isabel for use of the casino at the Safe House during the off time (when it’s closed for business). I’M SCARED because years ago, we always made outlandish bets while playing in which the loser had to do whatever the bet was (lol!).

Speaking of Max & Isabel, Maria asked if it would be okay for her & Alex to mention to them that I’m moving to Vegas and looking for a job… Although I have experience working at Ivanhoe’s (bar) and in clubs, I’m not sure if the Safe House is someplace I’d want to work. But, a job is a job and from my understanding Max & Isabel are always looking to add new people to their staff.

With that said, all that’s left is to rent a storage locker and start packing. As our theater schedules are both the same, I was wondering if you would be able to come over some nights to help me pack. It would be appreciated.

Liz

Happy to hear you e-mailed your friends Maria and Alex. I told you they would help out if you asked them! I would definitely take Maria up on the cooking lessons if she can arrange them… Lord knows, your cooking leaves something to be desired (no offense). As for a move-in party… If they plan it, I AM SO THERE (even if I have to fly out to Vegas on my own, I’m there).

Poker night sounds like a blast… I might have to consider traveling with you out to Vegas to join in the fun. You know me… Always up for a party. The outlandish bets sound hilarious. I can only imagine how many times you’ve lost in the past.

In regards to the Safe House… I think it’s a great idea for Maria and Alex to talk to Max & Isabel because if they don’t have any jobs available for you, they might know someone who does (a perk if you ask me).

I’ll call tomorrow to rent the storage locker and get back to you with the details (location, size of unit, etc.). The only thing you’ll need to do is purchase a pad lock if you don’t already have one. In regards to packing, I’m more than happy to assist. Just let me know what nights work best for you.

Chapter 3

One week later: The Safe House / Cloud 9 (VIP Lounge/Bar)…

Taking a break from their busy schedule, Maria, Alex, Max and Isabel sat at the bar waiting for Serena to pour their drinks. Looking at the clock behind the bar Maria motioned Courtney over. “Hey, Courtney can you turn on ‘Night Life’.

“No problem...” Reaching for a remote, she turned on the TV and changed the channel. “Any idea where Leslie Gutenberg was for this segment?”

“The Lund Fontanne Theater in New York,” Alex replied. “The segment should be the interview she did with the cast of that new Broadway musical, ‘Statue Maker’.”

Maria’s cell phone rang. The ID showed kitchen. “Hey… It’ll be on after the commercial break,” Maria simply stated not giving Michael chance to speak.

“On my way…”

“Serena, Michael’s on his way up. Can you pour him a Pilsner?”

“As soon as he arrives.”
**************************************************
Coming up on Night Life…Leslie Gutenberg visits the Lund Fontanne Theater in New York and sits down to talk with the cast of the new musical ‘Statue Maker’...

“Leslie Gutenberg here reporting to you live from outside the Lund Fontanne Theater here in New York City where in just a few minutes I will be sitting down to talk with the cast of the new musical ‘Statue Maker’…”

Because the segment was about the theater and the new musical, the program format was slightly different; divided into segments, one for each cast member with each segment starting with clips of video footage of each member performing. Watching the program, the group listened intently to each interview when suddenly the video clip of Liz aired.

Omigod… What is Liz Parker doing? Omigod!?! It looks like she’s doing a stripper chair dance routine fully clothed. Courtney, Serena, and Maria’s mouths gaped open. Alex and Isabel’s eyes got as wide as saucers. Max and Michael were dumbfounded. What was she thinking?

Slamming his martini glass down on the bar, he reached for his cell; handing it over to Maria. “Maria… Get Parker on the phone.”

“What!?! Why?”

“Just do it.”

“Um… Okay…” Dialing the number she knew from memory, she handed his cell phone back.
***********************************************
Meanwhile at rehearsal at the Lund Fontanne Theater in New York…

Liz and her friends Kenya and Jackye sat in front of the TV in her dressing room watching ‘Night Life’ when suddenly the video clip of Liz appeared on the screen. Omigod! Embarrassed, Liz’s face turned seven shades of red. Her friends laughed. “What were you thinking?”

“That was filmed before the interviews even started. How was I supposed to know they would arrive early that day?”

Her friends laughed harder. “You’ll be lucky if you ever live this one down. You do know that, don’t you?”

Liz’s cell phone rang from the end table near where Kenya sat. “It’s an unfamiliar number; do you want me to answer it?”

“Please do. Tell whoever it is I’m unavailable…”

“Liz’s phone… This is Kenya…” Kenya greeted the caller when suddenly the dressing room door flew open. “WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING, LIZ?” Sean bellowed as he crossed the room to where they sat.

Knowing his temper, Jackye split leaving Kenya in his path. Unable to hear the caller, Kenya hurried out into the hall leaving the door open to keep an eye on the situation.

Someone was yelling at Liz in the background about what sounded like the video clip that aired on TV. He could hear it. “Um… Kenya, is Liz there?” Max asked trying to remain calm. She’s in New York… There’s nothing you can do.

The yelling got louder. Liz panicked. Curling herself into a ball on the couch, she mentally prepared for the hit. He had her cornered and anticipating her next move; waited for Kenya to turn her back. “Um… Now is not a good time. Can she call you back?”

“Definitely… Tell her that Max called. She can call either Maria or Alex for the number.” As if reading Kenya’s mind, he paused. “She’ll know who I am.”

“Will do, Max.” Ending the call, Kenya frantically dialed 222 for the theater security. “I need security in Liz Parker’s dressing room A-Stat!” she ordered stepping back into the room just as Sean took a swing at Liz.

“BACK OFF, SEAN.” Kenya yelled at him.

Fuming, he turned stalking towards her. “Says who?”

“Me… Security’s been called, so if you know what’s good for you, you’ll get the fuck out of here.”

He stopped within a foot of where Kenya stood by the door. “Yeah, right… You were talking to Liz’s lover…”

That’s all he got out before two burly men stormed into the room. “SECURITY… EVERYONE, FREEZE!” The one yelled.

Panicking, Sean tried to make a run for the door but was caught by the officer standing closest to the door. Fighting in the officer’s arms, he tried to break free but the grip on him tightened. “Let’s go,” he stated leading Sean out the door.

Taking out a notepad, the other officer pulled out the vanity chair and sat down. “Please, have a seat Miss.” he ordered Kenya pointing over to the couch. Taking down their names, he began questioning the two ladies. “Now, would someone care to explain what happened?”

Within fifteen minutes, the officer closed his notepad, thanked the ladies for their time suggesting Liz press charges and that Kenya take Liz to the hospital to be examined.
*******************************************
At the Safe House / Cloud 9…

“Maria… Alex… My office, now.” Max ordered in a professional businesslike manner. Saying their ‘goodbyes’ Maria and Alex parted heading off to Max’s office. Oh, God… What did she say to him?

Finishing his martini, he tipped Serena and Courtney before saying ‘goodbye’ to his sister and friends.

“Is everything okay, Max?” Isabel questioned.

He sighed. “I don’t know. But, I’m about to find out.
*********************************************
Max’s office…

“Take a seat guys.” Max invited them to sit down. “What we’re about to discuss does not leave this room, understood?” Seldom seeing this side of Max, they both silently nodded. “Good. Now, I just had a very disturbing conversation with someone named Kenya who answered Liz’s phone…”

“Care to fill me in on who Kenya is and what’s going on?”

Maria and Alex looked puzzled. Why would Kenya be answering Liz’s cell? Rehearsal should have been still going on. “Kenya is a fellow actress within the theater and a good friend of Liz’s,” Maria started.

“Do either of you know if there’s anyone with a vendetta against Liz?” Silence. Max continued. “Look… When Kenya answered the phone I heard what sounded like someone yelling at Liz. Kenya said it wasn’t a good time and asked if Liz could call back.” He paused. “So, what’s going on?”

“Um, it’s not our story to tell Max,” Alex started.

“We don’t even know all that’s going on,” Maria added.

Max sighed. Something didn’t add up. Why wouldn’t Liz say anything to her friends? “Something’s obviously going on or else Liz would’ve answered her phone. Am I right?” Silently, Maria and Alex nodded. “Do you think she’s in any real danger? Do I need to call the NYPD?” Max tried again hoping to get a better answer.

Maria sighed. She really didn’t want to say anything, but maybe Max could help her out once she moved to Vegas. Forgive me, Liz. “Her ex-boyfriend… He’s obsessed with her…” she started.

Alex continued. “Yeah… Has a real bad temper too.” Alex paused. “Kenya keeps an eye on things though, or at least that’s what Liz always says.”

“Personally, I think he’s afraid of her because according to Liz, Kenya doesn’t take shit from anyone.”

Max remembered the conversation he had a few days ago with Maria and Alex. Liz was a successful theater actress and professional dancer yet was retiring from the theater when ‘Statue Maker’ ended and moving out to Vegas without a place to live or a new job lined up. They (Maria and Alex) had asked him if either he or Isabel could meet with her to discuss job possibilities and have use of the casino during an off time for a Poker night sometime after Liz moved to Vegas. And now this… An obsessive ex-boyfriend with a bad temper. Could Liz be leaving town to escape the ex?

Max listened intently. “I understand your concern, you guys… With that said, this is what we’re going to do. You guys are going to follow through with Liz’s request, except try to find a condo or apartment near here in case she has issues with the ex-boyfriend after she moves…” he paused. “I told Kenya to have Liz call either of you for my phone number. Give it to her because I wanted to discuss having her come in for a job interview and to discuss possible job openings…”

“No problem, but Liz asked us to schedule job interviews for her as she’s busy with rehearsals and performances. We can inquire about her schedule if you’d like,” Maria chimed in.

“Do that and get back to me. I still however need to talk to Liz.” He paused. “Oh, yeah… Find out if she’ll need a hotel room upon her arrival. If she does, I have connections so let me make the reservation.” He paused. “That’s all.”

“Um, Max?”

“Yeah, Alex.”

“Why are you so concerned for Liz’s well-being?”

Max sighed. “Aggressive men shouldn’t be beating up on innocent women. That and the fact that Liz is moving into an unfamiliar city knowing only a few people with next to nothing. She’s going to need all the help she can get.”

Although this chapter isn't much, it's a turning point as a new friendship starts to bloom.

Chapter 4 / Part 1

New York: Lincoln Memorial Hospital...

Sitting quietly in the corner of the examining room, Kenya listened intently as the doctor discussed with Liz the internal and external damage Sean inflicted on her and stated she was being admitted so her condition could be monitored and further evaluated.

Liz was saddened. Her career was crumbling because of Sean. “Will I be able to use my cell phone to make calls? I need to call the theater director and inform him where I am and why…”

“Once you’re situated in your room, you should be able to as long as you’re not hooked up to any monitors.”
***********************************************
Helping Liz get situated in her room on the second floor, Kenya rummaged through Liz’s purse handing her cell phone to her. “After you call the theater, you need to call Max Evans at the Safe House. He called earlier when we were watching ‘Night Life’.” She stated.

Liz frowned. Why does Max want to talk to me? We seldom talked in high school. “Um, okay.”

Dialing a number she knew by heart, Liz called the theater director explaining she fell in her condo and after being examined by a doctor was admitted to the hospital for observation. Unsure of when she’d be released, she promised to call the theater when she was ready to return. It was a believable lie, but Liz hated lying. She didn’t have a choice though if she wanted to keep her personal life private.

Ending her call to the theater, she sighed. She needed to call someone to get Max’s number. Who would be better to call… Maria or Alex? Maria would panic, insist on needing details, and make a huge production of things before insisting on flying out to New York. Alex on the other hand, would remain relatively calm but still insist on needing details before insisting she check in with him every day to ensure she was doing okay.

Flipping a coin, she decided it would be better to call Alex. She looked at the clock. Alex would be in his office. Dialing the direct number for his office, she let the phone ring… Pick up already.

“Alex Whitman…”

“Hi, Alex. It’s Liz… Do you have a minute to talk?”

“Um, sure. What’s up?”

“Two things… First, I need to return a phone call to Max, but he didn’t leave his number. Can I have it?” Grabbing a pen from Kenya, she wrote the number down that Alex gave her. “Thanks.”

“What else is on your mind, Liz?”

She sighed. “I’m in the hospital, Alex…”

“What?!? What happened?”

“You know my ex-boyfriend, Sean? Well he saw the clip of me on ‘Night Life’ last night and well…”

“Well what, Liz?”

“He stormed in on my friends and me watching the show in my dressing room at the theater yelling and screaming at me. He hit me, Alex…”

“Oh, God Liz. Are you okay?”

“I will be…” Liz stated going on to explain what happened. Informing Alex she’d keep him up to date on her condition she said ‘goodbye’ promising to call Maria later that night.

Looking over at Kenya for encouragement, Liz sighed. She didn’t want to, but she knew she had to return Max’s call. “How did Max sound when you talked to him?”

“He sounded like a nice person…”

Liz raised an eyebrow. That wasn’t what she meant. “No I mean his mood.”

“He sounded like a typical guy looking to make small talk. Why does it matter?”

“No reason in particular…”

“I don’t mean to pry, Liz but he said you knew who he was. So, who is he?”

“He’s Max Evans… Part owner of the Safe House.” She paused. “Maria, Alex and I attended the same school as him, his sister and their friends… They were part of the popular crowd, I wasn’t…”

“Wow, sorry I asked. Any idea why he called?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “Maria and Alex said they would talk to him to see if there were any job openings at the club, so that’s probably why he called.”
*********************************************
Nervously dialing the number Alex gave her, Liz silently prayed Max wouldn’t answer opting to instead leave a message. He answered on the second ring.

“Max Evans…”

“This is Liz Parker returning your call from earlier. Am I calling too late?”

“No, not at all… The reason I called was because Maria and Alex mentioned to me you were moving out here to Vegas and looking for a job…”

“I will be in about two months…”

“Isabel and I are always looking for people are always looking for people to join our staff. But, Maria and Alex failed to mention what type of job you’re looking for.”

“In all honesty, I never gave it much thought.” She paused. “I’m a professional dancer and theater actress, but I’m not sure if I want to continue pursuing this. While I was in college, I worked as a cocktail waitress and bartender at a local bar two blocks from the college and in high school, I was a waitress at the Crash Down…”

Interesting… Who would’ve guessed Liz was a bartender at one time. “When you were bartending, how frequently did you make mixed drinks?”

“Mixed drinks were a specialty at Ivanhoe’s. Being a licensed bartender, I can mix just about anything and know a thing or two about wine and beer. I’ve also attended numerous beer and wine tastings so I also know a thing or two about domestics and imports.”

“I’d love to have you come in for an interview sometime. Does any particular day and week work best for you?”

Liz panicked. Her planner was at home. “Um… I don’t have my planner with me at the moment. Can I check my calendar and call you back?

“No problem…” Taking a pen, Max noted this on a Post-It note. “Um, I have a question for you…”

Oh God. He saw the video clip on ‘Night Life’. “Sure. What’s the question?”

“I know we really didn’t talk much in high school, but as you’re friends with Maria and Alex we’re bound to see each other frequently once you move out here. So, I was wondering if there’s any chance we could forget about the past and start over.”

Liz smiled. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she’d ever think Max Evans would give her the time of day. “I don’t see why not… But, you have to realize I’m not the same person I was all those years ago…”

“Everybody’s changed since high school. Believe me I know… I work with ten of our fellow classmates here at the Safe House. Speaking of which, the others were wondering the same thing…”

“That would be great…” The door opened and a nurse walked in to check up on her. “I hate to cut this short, Max but I need to go. I’ll call you after I have the chance to look at my calendar.”

“Great. I’ll talk to you then.”

Chapter 4 / Part 2

New York: Days later in Liz’s condo…

The telephone rang. Groaning, Liz rolled over in her bed feeling around the table for the phone. “Hello…”

It was Kenya calling from the theater. “Did I wake you?”

“Yes…”

“Sorry. I was just wondering how you’re feeling.”

Liz sat up looking over at the clock. Ow. “I’m feeling the same as I was the other ten times you called. How’s rehearsal going today?”

Kenya couldn’t help but smile. “Word has it that Sean is doing jail time…”

Liz frowned. “That’s only for the time being. He’ll find a way to talk himself out, he always does.”

“God, let’s hope not. It’s actually nice having a non-eventful rehearsal for once. Sean’s alternative is a really nice guy.” Kenya changed the subject. “Have you given any thought to what the doctor said?”

Liz sighed. According to Doctor Steinberg, she was not to return to work for at least three weeks instead using the time to recover from her injuries. ‘Statue Maker’ would be half over. Thus, she had a tough decision to make. What to do? “I started to, but it’s a tough decision.”

“So what are you going to do with your time off?”

“I don’t know. According to Doctor Steinberg, I can travel as long as I have someone with me. I was thinking of maybe giving Max a call to see about rescheduling our meeting.”

“That’s a great idea, Liz except neither Jackye nor I will be able to travel with you.”

“I know. That’s why I was going to call Maria to see if either her or Alex could fly out here for a visit and then fly back with me.”
********************************************
Hours later…

… Liz grabbed the phone dialing a number she knew by heart. The phone rang. Silently, Liz prayed Maria would pick up. She answered on the second ring.

“Maria Deluca…”

“Maria, its Liz…”

“Liz… How are you doing?”

“As good as I’m going to be. Doctor Steinberg said I needed to take three weeks off to recuperate…”

“Wow… That’s a long time to take off.”

“I know…” She paused. “And I’ve been doing some thinking…”

“Really…”

“Yeah… I was wondering if either you or Alex could do me a favor…”

“Sure what’s up?”

“I’m incredibly bored being cooped up around here doing nothing. I was thinking of calling Max to see if I could reschedule my meeting with him…”

“Okay…”

“But, there’s a problem. According to Doctor Steinberg I’m not supposed to be traveling by myself due to the medications I’m on. Kenya isn’t able to because she’s still actively involved with ‘Statue Maker’, so I’d need someone to fly out here for a visit and to bring me back with them.”

Pulling out her planner, Maria checked her schedule. “My schedule’s wide open. When were you thinking of flying out?”

“I’m not sure yet. I still have to call Max.”

“Go ahead and call him. Let me know what’s going on and I’ll book the flight.”

“Thanks, Maria.”
********************************************
Paging through her planner, Liz found the piece of paper Max’s number was written on. Removing the paper clip, she checked her now wide open schedule. Follow up appointment with Doctor Steinberg in three weeks. That was the only appointment scheduled.

God, I hope he doesn’t ask any questions. What would I tell him? Picking up the phone she dialed Max’s number. He answered on the third ring.

“Max Evans…”

“Hi, Max, it’s Liz…”

Wasn’t she supposed to be at rehearsal or something? “Liz, hi… What’s going on?”

“Um… There’s been a change in my schedule and I was wondering if we could reschedule our meeting.”

Reaching for his planner, Max checked his schedule for two months out. “When were you looking to reschedule?”

“Do you have any time this week or the following?”

Puzzled, Max flipped the calendar back to the current month. “I’m booked with meetings for the next three days. After that, my schedule is wide open for the next three weeks. Do you have any specific day and time in mind?”

“Whatever works for you.” Max suggested a day and time which worked for Liz, so she made a note to call Maria with the information.

“Is everything okay Liz? You don’t sound like your normal self.”

She sighed. “I had a bit of an accident at the theater a few days ago. I was told by my doctor I needed to take time off to recuperate…”

Accident at the theater my ass. “So you decided to come to Vegas for a few days.”

She tried to smile. It hurt. “You could say that.”

“Will you be staying in a hotel?”

“I’m planning on it. I just need to call for reservations.”

“The World Poker Championship is going on this week and next. Getting a reservation will be difficult. I have connections. Would you like me to book the reservation for you?

“Could you? It would be one less headache for me. I haven’t scheduled the flight yet, but I’ll call you with the information on my arrival.”

“No problem. Hey, do Maria and Alex know you’re coming?”

“Maria does, but she doesn’t know when. I haven’t had the chance to tell Alex, but I’m sure Maria will so I’m not worried.”

Looking at his watch Max laughed. Typical Maria. “It’s getting late, Liz. As much as I’d love to continue talking with you I have a meeting I need to go to.”

“No problem, Max. I’ll see you in a few days.”

Maria-

I just got off the phone with Max. Our appointment is rescheduled for this Friday at 11:00.

Due to the World Poker Championship going on this week and next, Max agreed to take care of the hotel reservation for me. I just need to let him know our flight schedule.

I really appreciate you flying out here to New York to pick me up. It means a lot to me. I’m totally psyched that you’re coming for a visit (although short).

If you’re interested, I can get us theater tickets to see ‘Statue Maker’. The show is excellent (and I’m not just saying that because I’m a part of it). If not, there are plenty of other things we could do. Let me know what you want to do.

See you soon,

Liz

Alex-

Just an e-mail to let you know there’s been a change in my schedule due to the incident at the theater.

According to my doctor, I need to take three weeks off from the theater to recuperate. Being cooped up in my condo I’m incredibly bored. Not sure what to do with myself so I called Max to see about rescheduling our appointment. It’s rescheduled for this Friday at 11:00.

As I’m unable to travel alone (doctor’s orders); Maria has agreed to fly out here to visit for a day or two before flying back (to Vegas) with me. Max said he’d take care of the hotel reservation because the World Poker Championship is this week and next (which I’m sure you’ll be sneaking out to attend as a spectator) mentioning he has numerous connections within the city. Is there anyone in Vegas he doesn’t know?

See you soon.

Liz

Just an e-mail to let you know there was a change in Liz’s schedule due to the incident at the theater. Her doctor said she needed to take three weeks off from the theater, so she called Max to reschedule their appointment. It’s rescheduled for this Friday at 11:00.

As Liz isn’t able to travel alone (doctor’s orders); I’ll be flying out to NY for a short visit before flying back here with Liz.

Liz beat you to it (lol!). I received an e-mail from her earlier today explaining what’s going on.

By the way, when are you flying out to New York? If you need someone to pick you up at the airport when you arrive back, let me know because my schedule is wide open this week.

Kenya-

I talked to Maria and Max… Everything is all set.

My appointment with Max is rescheduled for this Friday at 11:00.

Because the World Poker Championship will is going on this week and next, Max said he’d take care of the hotel reservation as he has numerous connections within the city (go figure). All that I’m waiting for is for Maria to get back to me with the flight information and I should be all set.

I was wondering if you wanted to get together when Maria’s in town. You two would get along fabulously.

Talk to you tonight.

Liz

A fluff, but somewhat funny chapter. Maria arrives in New York and the truth comes out.

Chapter 5

New York: Illy Café, two days later…

Sitting at a small table in the back corner by a bank of windows, Liz and Maria sat catching up on each other’s lives. Liz went on to talk about her insecurities of starting her life over in a new city and how indecisive she was about whether or not to retire from the theater early. She looked tired and worn out. Life was definitely taking a toll on her.

For the time in her life, Maria didn’t know what to say. Saddened, she tried to focus on the positive pointing out all opportunities Liz would have to experience life once she left the theater, the places she could go, and the amazing people she would meet. She took a sip of her latte. “So, what’s going on with you and Max?”

“What? There’s nothing going on…” Liz took a bite of her biscotti.

“Yeah, right… Then why has he always been interested in hearing about your exploits through the years whenever you’d e-mail Alex and me? Why did he drag everyone across town to your shows in Vegas? The reaction on his face seeing that video clip of you on ‘Night Life’ was priceless… He insisted on calling you immediately after that…”

Liz was dumbfounded. Why had he indeed? They never moved in the same social circles and seldom talked the few times they did see each other. “I don’t know. What I do know is what I told you and Alex. He’s interested in meeting with me to discuss job opportunities…”

“And…”

“And… He asked if we could be put the past behind us and start over.”

“And why do you think he wants to do that?”

Liz sighed. “According to Max, we’d be seeing each other around frequently because we’re both friends of yours and Alex’s.”

“Uh-huh. What if I told you that he overheard Sean yelling at you about the video clip when he was talking to Kenya on the phone that night? Worried for your well-being, he literally hauled our asses into his office asking us if we had any clue what was going on…”

Max Evans had feelings for her. Liz choked on her latte. “Omigod… Please don’t tell me you told him…”

“Relax, Chica. Your secret is safe with Alex and I. Max will never know about your crush on him unless you say something.
*********************************************
Lund Fontanne Theater that evening…

Liz walked backstage with Maria down a dimly lit corridor towards the dressing rooms. “I want to introduce you to my friend, Kenya…” Approaching the second to the last dressing room, Liz knocked gently on the door.

Opening the door a crack, Kenya looked out from behind the door. Seeing Liz, the door flung open. “Liz! Omigod… You made it!” Gently, she embraced her in a friendly hug. “Please, come in…” she invited. Seeing Maria, she smiled. “And you must be Maria. It’s so nice to finally meet you… Liz has told me so much about you…”

Maria smiled. “Same here…” Maria looked around the room. Framed posters from several Broadway shows lined the walls. Several framed photos were strategically placed throughout the room on end tables and on the vanity. Costumes hung neatly on a clothing rack by the bathroom. “So, how long have you been acting on Broadway?”

Picking up a framed picture, she handed it to Maria. “Liz and I both got our big break starring in ‘Romeo & Juliet’ four years ago. That’s us during our first dress rehearsal…”

Liz blushed. It was not one of her best photos. “Omigod… You still have that picture?”

Kenya smiled smugly. “I also have the photos from our days in the dorms at The School of the Arts.” Taking the picture back from Maria, she placed it back on the vanity glancing at the clock. Show time in thirty minutes.

Knowing the ‘look’, Liz suggested they head back into the auditorium. “Stop by later after the show. I’ll order pizza,” Liz invited.

“See you guys then.”

As always, the show was a huge success. Liz and Maria stood applauding with the rest of the audience as the performers took their bows. “Wow, what an amazing show. Thanks for bringing me, Liz.”
*******************************************
Hours later in Liz’s condo…

Kenya, Maria and Liz sat lounging in the living room eating pizza while watching ‘The Tattooist’. “Do you think there’s any real sex appeal receiving a tattoo? Liz wondered out loud.

Maria chuckled. “I don’t know, Liz. Maybe you should ask Max when you see him.” Liz blushed. Kenya looked confused as Maria explained. “Not only does Max own the Safe House with his sister, Isabel he also manages the Viper Room and is one of the most sought after tattoo artists…”

“Maybe you could get a tattoo once you retire,” Kenya suggested knowing Liz contemplated doing so through the years but always chickened out.

“Oooh, you should. We could even stop by the Viper Room and have Max design one for you,” Maria suggested.

“Um, no…”

“Let’s take a vote,” Maria suggested taking out her cell phone.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling Alex…” Maria turned on the speaker phone.

Alex answered on the second ring. “Alex, this is Maria. I’m taking a vote to see who all thinks Liz should get a tattoo…”

“What?!? Why?” Alex wondered out loud.

“Doesn’t matter… I just need an opinion. Thus, the poll…”

“Be a rebel, Liz. Get the tattoo. You know you want to,” Alex teased.

“Go for it, Liz,” Isabel chimed in from the background.

“Thank you guys…” Saying their ‘goodbyes’ to Alex with the promise of seeing him soon, they ended the call. “Okay, that’s two… And I’m with Alex on this one. What about you, Kenya? What do you think?”

“Definitely… You’ve been contemplating getting one for years. I think you should go for it.”

Liz rolled her eyes and sighed. “I can’t believe we’re having this conversation.”

Chapter 6
New York: Illy Café the following morning…

Maria, Kenya, and Liz sat around a round table in a corner by the bank of windows drinking lattes; eating muffins and biscotti discussing the travel plans and what would be accomplished in Liz’s absence. Maria and Liz were flying out that afternoon. Kenya would be at the theater.

Kenya would be looking after Liz’s condo while she was gone. “… I e-mailed you a reminder about watering the plants and bringing in the mail, a copy of my travel itinerary along with a list of things that can be packed. Did I forget anything?” Liz asked.

“Relax, Liz… I have all the lists and everything will be fine. If there’s anything else, I’ll call you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive…” She paused. “Don’t forget to take pictures,” Kenya emphasized having never been to Vegas.

Maria smiled. “Not only will I make sure that she does, but I’ll make sure that she buys you something as well.” Maria took a sip of her latte hesitant to change the subject. “I’m curious. You mentioned last night that Sean was removed from the show. Is it true that he was arrested?”

“That’s what we heard… But, that doesn’t mean he won’t post bail,” Kenya stating a matter of fact.

Liz sighed. She hated talking about Sean but knew it was for the best that her friends knew about him and all that he was capable of in case he caused problems in the future. “He’s notorious for talking his way out of things, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he convinces the police he’s innocent,” she chimed in.

“What? How could he do that? He’s guilty as hell.”

Both Liz and Kenya rolled their eyes. Maria obviously never met anyone like Sean. “Oh, but he can. And he does. He can be very convincing when he wants to be,” Liz commented.
**********************************************
JFK International Airport that afternoon…

Waiting in line to check their luggage, Maria began talking about their plans for the evening. Alex and Isabel would be waiting for them at the airport to take Liz to the hotel to drop off her luggage. After that, they would be heading off to the Safe House for dinner at the El Flamingo where Michael was preparing a special meal for them.

The line moved forward as Maria stepped aside to wait for Liz. Liz set her suitcase on the scale. It was five pounds overweight. “I’m sorry Miss, but your bag is overweight…”

“What? That can’t be. I weighed it before we left…”

“Um, Liz… Where’s your purse?”

Liz panicked. Where is it? “Omigod…”

“Did you put it in your suitcase,” Maria inquired.

Zipping open the front compartment of her luggage, Liz blushed pulling out her purse handing it over to Maria. “Try weighing it again.” The suitcase was one pound underweight.

“Geez, Liz. What do you all have in here?” Maria asked handing Liz her purse back.

“Just the essentials…”

Grabbing their claim tickets, Liz led Maria down towards the concourse where they passed a Hare Krishna in an orange robe playing the melody of Kumbaya on a guitar. “What the…”

“Don’t ask, Maria. Just keep walking. If we’re lucky, he won’t follow us.” The man didn’t, instead playing to the group of people surrounding him.

Finding their gate, the ladies sat down picking magazines up off a chair that someone had left behind. “Okay, that was weird…” Maria stated.

“Not that weird. I’ve seen worse.” Liz commented.
****************************************
Their flight was called and showing their tickets, they boarded the plane. Maria and Liz flipped a coin for the window seat. Liz won the toss. Storing their carry-on bags under the seats, the ladies sat down and buckled their seat belts. “Are you nervous?”

“Nervous? Not really because I’m to the point in life where I honestly don’t care what people think. I am who I am.” Liar.

The flight attendants began their safety spiel as the plane began to taxi down the runway. It stopped and the flight attendants took their seats as the plane prepared for take-off.

Once the plane was up in the air, the seatbelt sign went off. Unbuckling her seatbelt, Liz leaned down to reach for her purse. Ow. “Let me get it for you.” Reaching down, Maria found her purse wedged under the seat and handed it to her flagging a flight attendant down for a bottle of water. “Time for your meds?”

Rummaging through her purse, Liz pulled out a bottle of Codeine. Taking two pills from the bottle, she tossed it back into her purse. Taking a sip of water, she swallowed the pills. “Pain pills… I only take them as needed.” And within fifteen minutes she was asleep.

“Liz… Liz…” Maria gently nudged her friend.

Liz groaned. “So tired… Let me sleep…”

“You need to wake up. We’ve arrived in Vegas…”

Groaning again, Liz took off her seatbelt and stretched. Ow. “Okay, I’m awake. Let’s go…” Standing up, her head began to spin. Oh, God… Grabbing the seats as she walked, Liz headed down the aisle with Maria following close behind.
******************************************
Las Vegas: McCarran International Airport…

Disembarking from the plane, Maria scanned the terminal searching for Alex and Isabel who were nowhere to be found. Liz checked her watch. They were late. Pulling her cell phone out of her purse, Maria spotted Michael and Max entering the terminal. What are they doing here? “Michael… Max… Over here.” Maria called out waving her arms.

Turning, the guys hurried over to where Maria and Liz waited. Liz looked like she was going to collapse. “Hey…” Michael greeted them grabbing the carry-on bags.

“Liz, are you okay?” Max asked.

She groaned. “So tired…” Her body started swaying. Reaching out, Max took her arm in his to hold her up.

“Liz is a little groggy from her meds,” Maria was quick to point out. “She’ll be fine once they wear off.” Taking Liz’s purse from her, Maria slung it over her shoulder.

“Why don’t you take Liz out to the car, Max? Maria and I will grab the luggage. We’ll meet you guys out front.”

“Okay. See you in a bit.” Watching Michael and Maria walk off towards the baggage claim, Max carefully scooped Liz up in his muscular arms. Liz was so tired, she didn’t fuss.

“Where are we going?”

“I’m taking you to the car. Michael and Maria are getting the bags.”
*****************************************
In the car…

Carefully shifting Liz in his arms, Max opened the back car door. Gently placing her sleeping form in the back seat, he buckled her in before climbing behind the wheel. Cursing Michael for adjusting the seat and mirrors, he fired up the engine. Taking one last look back at Liz, he drove off exiting the parking garage driving around to the pick-up point.

Michael and Maria were waiting for him. Putting the car in Park, Max stepped out helping Michael load the bags in the trunk. Seeing Max’s concern for Liz, Michael offered to drive and Maria offered to ride shot gun in the front leaving Max to sit in the back seat with Liz.

“So, what happened with Alex and Isabel?” Maria asked sitting down in the front seat.

“Alex caught someone counting cards in ‘Deuces Wild’ and Isabel had an issue with inappropriate behavior in ‘Perfect Poison’. Ava called my office asking if Michael and I could pick you up,” Max explained as they drove off.

Maria rolled her eyes. When isn’t there something going on someplace in the Safe House? “What about dinner?”

Michael smiled. “Fear not… I had all the prep work done this morning, so all the Sous Chef has to do is cook the food. Serena’s taking care of beverages, so everything should be set.” Michael looked in the rear view mirror back at Liz’s sleeping form. “Should we stop at the hotel first or head right to the Safe House?”

“Why don’t we head back to our place, Michael? Liz can nap on the couch until dinnertime.” Maria suggested. It was not a bad idea.

The guys agreed and so they drove to the Safe House where Alex and Isabel would be waiting for them.

Just a fluff chapter.

Chapter 7

The Safe House: Hours later in Michael and Maria’s condo…

Liz groaned and stretched. Her eyes fluttered open taking in the surroundings. “Where am I?”

“We’re in my condo, Chica.” Maria pointed out. “How are you feeling?”

“Okay… Still a bit groggy, but at least my head’s not spinning anymore. Where is everyone?”

Happy Liz remembered Max and Michael being at the airport, Maria smiled. “Everyone’s in the kitchen.”

Oh crap, dinner. “I hope you didn’t wait dinner…”

“Alex suggested we let you sleep so we ate dinner without you. Michael fixed you a plate though which is in the refrigerator. I can have it heated up for you if you’re hungry.”

“That would be great.” Slowly, Liz sat up. Ow. Grabbing the arm of the couch, Liz stood up and followed Maria into the kitchen.

“Hey, guys. Look who’s decided to join us.” Maria greeted her friends sitting around the large oak rectangular table.

Alex crossed the room giving Liz a hug. “Liz… You’re awake. How are you feeling?” He asked concerned for his friend.

“Sorry, everyone,” Liz apologized. “I’m a still a bit under the weather…”

“No need to apologize. We understand,” Michael said. “Have a seat and I’ll heat up dinner for you.”

“Thank you.”

Max stood pulling out the chair next to his helping Liz sit down. Pushing her closer to the table, he sat back down. “Liz, I don’t believe you’ve met my sister Isabel and friends Kyle and his wife, Serena. You met Michael at the airport,” he reminded her.

“Thursday night is usually our movie night, are you up for it,” Isabel asked.

Liz smiled. “I am. But, can we watch something other than a horror or suspense/thriller movie? The last one gave me the creeps.”

Kyle looked over at Max and Michael. “What was the last thriller you saw?”

“’The Tattooist’,” Maria chimed in. Liz glared at her.

Then it hit Alex. “So, that’s why you called last night.” Having seen the movie, Isabel choked on the water she was drinking. Embarrassed, Liz blushed.

“Why so embarrassed, Liz?” Max asked. “Suspense/Thriller and horror movies are made to scare people.”

“It’s personal.”

“Oh, it’s personal alright,” Maria muttered under her breath shooting Alex and Isabel a dirty look.
***************************************
Handing Maria her plate to put in the dishwasher, Liz followed the others into the living room where everyone coupled off leaving her to sit next to Max on the love seat. Serena suggested watching ‘Crazy, Stupid Love’ and the guys groaned. “That’s fine, sweetheart, but next time Max, Michael, Alex or I get to pick,” Kyle replied handing the movie to Maria to put in the DVD player.

Michael reached for the lights as Maria started the movie. As the opening credits flashed across the TV screen, Liz subconsciously leaned up against Max resting her head on his chest. Grinning into the darkness, Max draped an arm around her shoulders gently pulling her closer; holding her hand in his.

As the movie played on, everyone laughed. Looking around the room at his friends cuddled up on each other’s laps, Max sighed. They all had found their soul mate except him. Sure women threw themselves at him and some he even casually dated, but none of them seemed ‘special’ to him. He wanted more. He wanted to be loved and to love someone in return.

Something was gently rubbing his arm. Curious, he glanced down. Liz was gazing down at his arm outlining the tattoos with her small, dainty fingers. Closing his eyes, he groaned. What is her fascination with tattoos?

An hour later, the ending credits scrolled across the screen. Reaching up against the wall, Michael flipped the lights on. Everyone squinted to adjust to the light cursing him. Liz was asleep curled up against Max. “Um… Guys…”

Michael walked over to where Max was sitting. Reaching out, he scooped up Liz in his arms careful not to wake her. Max stretched his legs and stood up.

“You’re tired, Max. Why don’t you go back upstairs to your place and go to bed,” Isabel suggested.

“But…” He started to protest.

“Maria and I will take Liz over to the hotel and get her situated,” Michael explained.

“She shouldn’t be alone in her condition,” Max was quick to point out.

“No, she shouldn’t. That’s why I’ll be spending the night at the hotel with her,” Maria chimed in. “Alex will pick us up in the morning.”
