Chapter 5
"Ready to go Mr. Evans?" Liz asked Max as they met up after school the following Monday. Max was going to take her to the Crashdown where she was going to meet Michael.
"I think I am, Miss Parker," he said as she linked arms with him, heading over to his car.
"Hey, Liz!" Kyle exclaimed from behind. Liz turned her head around and smiled at him.
"Hey Kyle, what's up?" she asked as Max helped her into his car.
Kyle gave Max a dirty look before turning back to Liz, "We have plans, or have you forgotten?"
"...Oh my God, that's right...we were going to go to the park...I'm sorry Kyle, but Max was going to take me to meet his brother, Michael today," Liz said.
"Why do you keep blowing me off for this guy? You did it on Saturday and now you're doing it again," Kyle said angrily.
"Kyle!" Liz exclaimed before dragging him away from the car, "That was really embarrassing you know. Max is my best friend. I haven't seen him in 3 years! I've never even MET his brother!"
"Maybe we can do something after my shift...but now...I can't even look at you," she said, glaring at him before walking back over to Max's car.
"Just...don't say anything Max, and drive," she whispered under her breath.
"You got it," he replied, not even looking back at Kyle before starting the car and driving away.
"That was so embarrassing," she moaned, putting her face in her hands, "I'm so sorry."
"Don't worry about it, Liz," he said, glancing over at her before returning his eyes to the road,
"Listen...we need to talk about what happened last night, because I don't want it to get in the way of our friendship, Max," Liz said, glancing over at him as the wind blew in her face.
"I know, same here," he told her. "So we...forget it ever happened?"
"No...why did you kiss me Max?" Liz asked him.
He didn't say anything, concentrating on the road and not looking over at her.
"Max?" she persisted.
"I don't know why Liz...it was like an impulse, I just did it...And I don't regret it...unless it could get in the way of our friendship," Max said.
"You...didn't regret it?" she asked quietly as they pulled up in front of the Crashdown.
"No, Liz. You're my best friend, I can tell you absolutely anything without thinking that you will judge me, I kissed you and it just felt...right Liz, so I don't regret it, but I know it can't go any further, so I would just like it to be buried...I don't want to be the reason why you and Kyle are having relationship problems," Max explained.
She nodded. "I understand, Max...consider it buried," she told him, smiling as they got out of the car.
"Ok, good," he replied, wrapping his arm around her neck and giving her a noogie really quick before they went into the restaurant.
"Lizzie, is that you?" her dad called from the kitchen. "Yeah, and I brought a friend," she called back, grinning over at Max as they sat down at the counter.
"How are you doing Max?" Jeff asked as the sound of an opening door brought Michael into the restaurant a moment later.
"Doin' great, Jeff, how about you?" Max replied as Michael sat down beside him.
"I'm great as well...and I guess this is your brother?" he asked, looking over at Michael and shaking his hand.
"Michael Guerin," Michael said. "It's nice to meet you."
"You too Michael. I'll let you all catch up, see you later boys, and Lizzie you have to study for that AP test tonight, remember," her dad said, pointing the spatula at her as he returned to the kitchen.
Liz laughed and looked over at Michael. "Hey, Michael, I'm Liz...Max has told me all about you," she said, smiling at him.
"Should I be scared?" Michael asked, glancing at Max briefly before giving her a half smile.
"Nah, little ol' Liz here is harmless," Max said, putting his arm around her.
"Hey, I am not little anymore Max, I've worked hard to get as tall as I am now!" Liz exclaimed, laughing a bit, "Let's go to a booth, that way it'll be easier to talk."
They all went over to the corner booth and sat down, Max and Liz on one side and Michael on the other. "So, Michael...I hear you've got a hot date with my friend Maria," she said.
"Oh...right, I'm not usually one to date girls who I've just met, but she wouldn't take no for an answer, so I said what the heck, you know?" Michael replied.
"Well, Maria's great, she really is," Liz told him.
"She's sort of hyper, I don't really know if she's my type, so we'll have to see I guess," Michael said nonchalantly.
Liz gave him a half smile and nodded, looking over at Max who shrugged.
"So...you guys really don't look alike," Liz said to break the silence.
"Different moms," Michael explained.
"Oh," Liz mumbled, staring down at her hands.
"Listen...I've got to get to work...it was nice meeting you Liz," Michael said, smiling at her and standing up.
"Nice meeting you too Michael...we should all hang out some night, see a movie at the drive in or something," Liz suggested.
"Yeah, then afterwards we could all grab an egg cream down at the soc hop," Michael mumbled before leaving.
Liz blinked at him before shaking her head, having no clue what he was talking about, "Uhm, well, you heard the boss, I have to study," she said quietly.
"Ok," Max said as they stood. "I'm sorry about him...he isn't exactly adjusting to the whole small town thing."
"So he hasn't always been the brooding type?" Liz asked.
"Oh, he has...he's just even more brooding now, if that makes any sense," Max said, laughing.
"Yeah, I guess it does. Well, unless you want to watch me study for AP Calculus, I'll see you tomorrow morning for my ride Mr. Evans," Liz said to him before hugging him.
"Bye Liz," he said, kissing her on the cheek before leaving.
She smiled before heading upstairs after grabbing a bag of Fritos, quickly disrobing once in her room and changing into a large t-shirt.
After about an hour of studying, the phone rang. "Hello?" she said, picking it up.
"Liz?" a deep voice asked and she rolled over onto her back, twirling the phone cord around her finger as she debated whether to hang up or not, "Listen...I'm sorry about earlier baby...I won't let it happen again, I promise. Forgive me?" Kyle asked.
"Of course, Kyle...just, please, don't let it happen again," she replied. "Good...so, what are you doing right now?" he asked.
"I'm studying for the AP Calc test," she said, moving the phone to the crook of her neck so that she could write something down.
"Oh well...what if I told you I was on the balcony," he said and she looked up, seeing him at the window.
"Kyle! You can't just go up on my balcony like that! You could've scared me!" Liz exclaimed, though she was laughing as she stood up.
She hung up the phone as did he and she climbed out onto the balcony.
"I like this look on you," Kyle said, laughing as he tugged at the large t-shirt.
She giggled and wrapped her arms around him, leaning in to kiss him.
He met her kiss, making it simple at first, but then increasing the passion, sliding his arms around his waist, "I've missed you, you know," he whispered.
"I've missed you too," she said, smiling and running a hand through his hair.
"I have to go back inside before my dad catches us out here and kills you," Liz said, kissing him once more.
"If you must," he said, sighing before kissing her again. "See you tomorrow."
"Bye," she said before walking back into her room, shutting the window behind her before going back to the books.

"Max, come be my strong man!" Liz called from the kitchen of the Crashdown where she was helping her dad lift boxes.
"What if I'm too lazy?" Max replied, pulling off his jacket.
"Wouldn't surprise me," she said, smirking as he came into the kitchen,
He grinned at her and picked up a box, following Jeff to where he needed the box. It was November now, and just starting to get chilly.
Fifteen minutes later, they were done and Liz's shift ended. "Wanna go do something?" Max asked her after she changed.
"What do you have in mind?" Liz asked him, looking up at him.
He shrugged and leaned against the wall. "I don't know...how about we go down to the park, just like old times?" he asked.
"Sounds like a plan," Liz said, linking her arm in his and resting her head on his arm.
"I'll be back in a little while, dad!" she called to her father before she and Max left the Crashdown.
"Give me a piggy back ride, Mr. Muscles!" Liz exclaimed, tugging on his shirt and laughing.
"My pleasure, Miss Lazy Butt," he said, grinning as she jumped up on his back.
"So, Mr. Muscles, how are you doing in school?" Liz asked him, resting her chin on his shoulder.
"Pretty good...especially in AP biology," he said, laughing a little.
"Well, that's because you have the best partner in the world!" she exclaimed, giggling. A week after he'd arrived at school, their biology teacher assigned them partners.
Maria had been a bit bummed out at first, having been Liz's partner in everything for the longest time, but Liz assured her that she was still one of her best friends, and there was nothing to worry about.
"This is our stop," he said when they reached the park, abruptly dropping her.
"I'll race you to the swing sets! Loser has to buy dinner!" Liz exclaimed, immediately racing off.
Max grinned and ran after her, easily beating her to the swings. "Man, you run fast!" she exclaimed, plopping onto the swing next to him.
"Well, I have been working out you know," Max said, twisting his swing around and around and then spinning in fast circles as he let go, Liz doing the same.
"God, I haven't been down here in ages," she sighed, leaning her head against the chain on the swing.
"What's been keeping you away?" Max asked her, slowing moving the swing back and forth as the sun began to set.
"School...work...Kyle," she said softly, swinging in time with him.
"Why would Kyle keep you away from the park?" Max asked her softly, glancing over at her, frowning as she sat on the swing.
She shrugged and said, "We're usually at his house or parties or something."
"Ohh," Max replied, just staring off into the distance before suddenly getting up, "May I have this dance Mademoiselle?"
"Dance? But there's no music," she said, smiling softly as he pulled her up off of the swing.
"Of course there is," Max said, taking her hand in his, "Just listen. There are the crickets, and the frogs, and the stars."
She laughed and rested her hand on his shoulder as he slid his arm around her waist, pulling her closer.
"So, Max, have you set your eyes on a special someone?" Liz asked him as they swayed to the sounds of nature.
He shrugged and said, "Oh, not really...still getting the lay of the land."
"Lay of the land? Max you lived here nearly all of your life," she said, raising her eyebrows at him.
"Yeah, but a lot of people have changed in the 3 years that I've been gone," Max told her.
"Hmm? Like who?" she asked.
"Everyone. You to name one of them," Max said, raising his eyebrows at her.
"Yeah, well..." she began, trailing off and frowning.
"What, did I say something wrong?" Max asked, taking her chin in one of his hands and making her look at him.
"No," she said, shaking her head. "I'm sorry...you didn't do anything wrong, Max."
"You sure Liz?" he asked her, "You can tell me absolutely anything missie."
She sighed and shook her head. "Nothing's wrong, Max," she said, though he didn't look convinced.
Max sighed before leaning down and picking up Liz, throwing her over his shoulder, "Max put me down!" she exclaimed, laughing. "Not until you tell me what's wrong!" he replied.
"Ok ok ok, let me doooown, I'll tell you!" she exclaimed and he set her down on the ground. "You remember the night you slept over a few months ago...and I told you that I haven't changed for the better?" she began and he nodded. "Well...it's Kyle that's caused that change...and I don't like it, Max."
"Liz...what has he done?" Max asked her warily.
She swallowed and whispered, "He wants to...take the next step."
"...Liz, are you ready for that?" Max asked her softly, "Is that all? Because that won't change who you are."
She shook her head. "He's wanted to for a while and...I don't know, I'm babbling but I've been keeping it in and I don't want to, Max, I don't," she whispered, tears starting to fill her eyes.
"Shhh, it's alright Liz...it's alright. Just...if he ever...pressures you, just come to me," Max said softly.
She nodded as he slid his arms around her. "Thank you, Max," she whispered.
"No problem at all Liz, I'm here for you," Max whispered, smiling his goofy smile at her.
She laughed and leaned up to kiss his cheek. "I think we should head back...it's getting a little chilly," she said softly.
"Ok," he replied, pulling back and wrapping his arm around her as they made their way back to the Crashdown.
They stopped in front of the entrance to the Crashdown and she turned to him. "Thanks again, Max...I don't know where I'd be without you," she said, hugging him tightly.
"No problem Liz...do you think it would be okay if I crashed here tonight?" Max asked her.
"No problem, come on up," she said, taking his hand as they entered the Crashdown.
"Dad, Max is spending the night," Liz said to her father, "Can I order a pizza for dinner?"
"Sure, honey," he said, smiling up at them. "Hello, Max."
"Hey Jeff," Max replied before following Liz upstairs to her bedroom.
"I've still got a load of studying to do tonight, I hope you're not too bored," she said, grinning after she ordered the pizza.
"I'll find a way to amuse myself I suppose," he said, pulling off his shirt and pants, walking over to her stack of magazines and bending over, Liz admiring him secretly from behind.
He turned around and laughed. "Like what you see, Parker?" he asked.
"Oh yeah, you know it," she replied, laughing, before looking away, blushing lightly.
After their dinner, they stayed up nearly all night talking until Jeff came in at about 3 in the morning, telling them to go to sleep.
Max laughed lightly and got down onto the floor, Liz slipping into her bed, looking up at the ceiling before looking down at him, "You're going to have a backache and you're going to freeze your ass off Max Evans," she told him, "You know my dad doesn't believe in heat, and it's freezing tonight."
"Why doesn't your dad believe in heat again?" he asked her, laughing a little.
"Because we're in New Mexico?" Liz said, laughing as it came out as a question, "Get up here, I won't be responsible for your moaning and groaning in the morning."
"If you insist," he said, standing up and climbing into bed with her, pulling the covers up over both of them.
Liz let out a deep sigh, rolling over onto her stomach and looking at Max, "Night Max," she said quietly.
"Night, Liz," he whispered, smiling at her before turning off the light.
She scooted ever so closer to him, resting her head against his chest as he wrapped his toned arms around her securely.
He kissed her head softly before they both drifted off to sleep.
