Part 51

Post by Double Trouble »

Eva: Michael does have everything covered. Now we just have to see how he handles facing off with Carson.

They’re very ready to pursue a serious relationship. They’ve spent the past two years apart so they know what they’re missing and they’re not willing to let anymore time pass by.

Keep those fingers crossed because Carson is coming out of the gate with his opinion of Michael and his relationship with Maria firmly in place.

Earth2Mother: Well, lol, it wasn’t exactly a question, but it’s doubtful that he’s going to listen.

mary mary: A sidewinder would be a good description for him right now. Until he reaches a place where he can accept Michael is going to be a part of Maria’s life he’s definitely running the risk of losing his daughter.

begonia9508: Well, if he doesn’t straighten up and quickly, Maria might just be the one to tell him that.

They have lots of plans to make. :)

Alien_Friend:
And so it begins.
Lol, that just sounded so ominous… and so right at the same time! ;)

If they can just get past this dinner we’ll see what happens.

And never more so than when you’re having fun! Something we have a lot of working on our fics together!

killjoy: Any chance you’ve got a prediction for this week’s winning lottery numbers? ;)

kismet: The storm definitely won’t last for long…

Part 51

Kyle parked in the movie theater parking lot and they all piled out of his truck. They had wanted to get out of the cabin for a while and during dinner at the lodge they had decided to catch a movie. They had settled on one only after Max and Liz lost the coin toss.

“We’ll get the tickets an’ you guys grab the munchies,” Tess said as they walked up to stand in line for the tickets.

Liz shook her head. “No way.” She pulled her credit card out of her wallet and motioned for Tess to do the same. “Let’s go, Harding, hand it over.”

The blonde rolled her eyes and they exchanged cards.

“We’re goin’ to see the sucky movie you picked out so we’re not payin’ for your food too.” She smiled sweetly. “Make sure you get my receipt.”

“Hey, make sure they put extra butter on my popcorn,” Kyle yelled when they went inside to stand in line at the concession stands.

Max rolled his eyes as he wrapped his arms around Liz and pulled her back to lean against his chest. “We could ditch ‘em and hit a different movie.”

“We could but goin’ to the same movie was kinda the point of us all goin’ out together.”

“And who’s idea was that again?” he growled against her neck. “Now we’re goin’ to see some crappy film that they picked out.”

“I agreed to go to the movie,” she whispered as she turned her head to kiss him. “I didn’t say a word about actually watching it.”

He laughed as they moved forward a few feet. “That’s my girl.”

They settled into their seats a short while later and it was just a few more minutes when the others joined them.

“Move, Evans,” Tess bumped his leg slightly with hers when he sat there with his widespread legs taking up all the room in front of him.

Max shifted back and pulled his legs in as close as possible. “Y’know, there’re plenty of other seats out here. It’s not like you just have to sit on the other side in this row right here.”

“That’s my seat,” she pointed between a seat on the other side of the couple and her ticket. “If ya want more space then go sit in a seat that someone else might’ve already paid for.” She stuck her tongue out at him.

“Who knew they’d have assigned seating?” Liz said as she put her drink in the holder and then checked the armrest between her and Max. “Hey, check it out...” she pulled it upright and tucked it between their seats.

“Nice,” Max grinned and leaned in closer without having to worry about a stupid armrest between them.

Kyle shoved a handful of popcorn in his mouth as he dropped down in one of the seats and then wiped his greasy hand on his jeans. “Hey, this’s nice.” He glanced at the empty seats on either side of them. “I hope they don’t sell out ‘cause I don’t wanna be stuck next to these two while they’re makin’ out.”

“Sell out?” Liz stuck her tongue out at him. “I’ll bet they’d be happy to sell a couple dozen tickets to this piece of crap movie.”

“Yeah, right. Like the one you two had picked was any better,” Tess rolled her eyes and leaned over to grab some popcorn herself.

“At least the one we picked out has some action,” Max pointed out.

“Shhhhh,” someone from behind hissed.

Tess turned her head to glare at the person. “What? There’re just commercials on the screen!”

“Let the good times roll,” Max said. There was always someone who actually shushed people who talked during the commercials.

“Killjoy,” Liz muttered.

Kyle turned his head in an effort to see the person who had complained, pegging the person immediately. “Why do people care about the stupid commercials?” he muttered around a mouthful of popcorn. He glanced down at the fluffy white treat in his hand and then back at the complainer.

“Don’t waste the food,” Tess warned.

He shrugged and slouched down in his seat as he held the bucket out to her. “Wan’ fum?” he asked.

“You’re disgusting sometimes,” she shook her head and brushed some pieces of popcorn from his mouth.

“He is kind of a pig,” Liz commented.

Someone in front of them groaned loudly at their banter but didn’t turn around.

“You guys just had to pick a movie that was gonna have avid commercial-watchers,” Max complained.

“I doubt this’s a movie thing, more a local thing,” Liz thought loudly.

“Tourists,” someone muttered behind them.

The room suddenly turned dark, an indicator that the movie was finally showing. “Shhhhhhhh,” Tess said, deliberately being loud.

“Damn,” Kyle muttered when he reached for his drink and nearly dropped it because it slid in his greasy grasp.

His girlfriend giggled. “You are such a dork.”

He just grinned and shrugged. It was true... sometimes. “Where’d you put the chocolate?”

She glanced down at her lap where it was resting between her legs.

He grinned. “So tempting...” he glanced around them, “and so public.”

Liz leaned against Max’ side while her hand slipped under his shirt to caress his bare abandon. She loved how his muscles tightened under her touch.

The movie held Max’s attention for all of a matter of seconds when she decided to get a little bit daring. He leaned in and just as his mouth settled over hers someone kicked the back of his seat.

Liz smiled. “Breathe.”

“Breathin’,” he muttered, his fingers playing against her neck as he leaned in for another kiss. It was just as short-lived as the first when his seat received another kick. “Okay,” he growled, “the first one could easily be an accident, but the second?”

Liz glanced up slightly to look at who was sitting behind Max. It was a boy, probably 15 or 16, no problem for her boyfriend to concern himself with.

Kyle glanced over at them and he chuckled when he caught the annoyed look on Max’s face. “I think Evans is runnin’ into some difficulties over there.”

Liz let her hand wander further down to distract her boyfriend, not really looking forward to a why-did-ya-kick-my-seat discussion.

Max forgot all about the annoying little snot behind him when her fingernails dragged over his inseam teasingly. “Where were we?” he rasped against her lips.

“I think you were just about to kiss me again,” she whispered.

“Think you’re right.” He was agreeable as he pulled her close and his lips settled over hers.

Her hand moved over the bulge in his jeans and squeezed it slightly. She chuckled when he groaned into her mouth in response.

Max’s hand slid under her shirt and he let his fingers trail over her skin, feeling her shudder at his touch.

“Are we watchin’ a porn here or what?” Someone from behind asked, sounding annoyed.

Kyle flicked a piece of popcorn in the direction of the voice. It only took the other guy a few seconds to react and the popcorn was tossed back.

Max jerked back when a piece of soggy popcorn hit his cheek. “Okay, that’s it,” he muttered, using his sleeve to rub the offended area.

“Shhhhhh,” was heard again from various directions now. Tess was starting to get annoyed with the people telling them to be quiet. They weren’t bothering anyone, so what was the big deal?

“If ya wanna make out then go find a hotel room,” a man from the last row said.

“Hey, man, why don’t you just watch the action on the screen?” Kyle snapped.

None of them noticed the little beam of light bouncing along the aisle as an usher hurried to put an end to the disturbance.

“You four,” he pointed to Max, Liz, Tess and Kyle, “you need to leave the cinema, please.”

“Us?” Liz questioned with a frown. “We’re not the ones makin’ all the noise.”

“Yes they are,” someone said.

Kyle shrugged as he reached for Tess’ hand. “Movie’s not that good anyway... bet we can find somethin’ better to do at the cabin.”

“We want our money back,” Liz insisted.

“Think that’s a lost cause, darlin’,” Max said with an amused snort of laughter.

“Uh-huh, not leaving before,” she said loudly, glaring at the usher.

“I don’t think we’re gonna get our money back, Parker.” Kyle said as he nudged her from behind. “Hey, make sure you bring your popcorn though. What?” he asked when Tess stared at him. “It’s really good.”

“Enjoy the movie, loser,” Liz hissed at the guy who had made the porn comment and flipped him off.

“No problem... should be easy to do without you two goin’ down on each other while people are tryin’ to watch a movie,” the guy smarted off.

Max was enjoying watching his girl go back and forth with the guy but he knew if the guy kept pushing he’d end up with a majorly pissed off Liz on his hands and he didn’t intend to spend his evening trying to calm her down. He reached for her hand and tugged her up against him. “C’mon, let’s go.”

Liz shot one more glare at the ass that had started things before taking Max’s hand and allowing him to lead her out of the theater.

*****

The living room was silent when Amy left and Maria wished it was time for dinner. Carson picked at the material on the arm of the chair he was sitting in as he watched his daughter and her... he gritted his teeth. Her boyfriend. “So, Michael, you’ve been working up here for a while now?”

“Close to two years now.”

“Have you been with the same outfit since you got into this line of work?”

“Yeah, I came here and met my boss on my first evening here. He was looking for a new guide and I had just come from school, so the next day I had the job.”

“Um-hmm. Do you have much downtime?”

“Mostly I do the climbs to the summit and back. It takes between 5 and 7 days, after that Devin gives us downtime of at least 4 days. It’s our choice if we take them or not.”

“And do you take much time off?”

“Not in the past no,” he said honestly.

Carson frowned. The young man at the office that afternoon had made it sound like they took quite a bit of time off. “So, you intend to start taking time off now?”

“I told my boss I’ll be out for probably a month,” Michael nodded.

“A month,” he mused. “That seems to be an excessive amount of time to take off.” He leaned back in his seat and accepted the glass of Scotch his wife handed him. “Especially if my daughter intends to follow through with her intentions to shack up with you.”

“Dad,” Maria complained.

“Carson,” Amy chastised.

“Amy, I have every right to know what his intentions are.”

“My intentions toward your daughter are the same as they’ve always been, Mr. DeLuca,” Michael interrupted before anything else could be said. “I love her, always have, and I’m not gonna stand here while you talk about our relationship like it’s nothin’ more than a passing thing.”

Maria smiled at Michael’s words. “Why’re you askin’ all these questions about Michael’s job, Dad? What’s that got to do with anything?”

“I think I have a right to know whether or not he can take care of you.”

“All you’re doin’ is lookin’ for somethin’ that you can use against us,” she muttered.

“There’s nothin’ he can use against us,” Michael said quietly.

“Why don’t we go into the dining room?” Amy stood up. “Dinner will be ready in a few minutes.” She recognized the tension in the room and her daughter as well as her husband needed to calm down before continuing this.

They went into the dining room, standing together on one side of the large table. Amy had held Carson back, allowing the younger couple a few minutes alone.

“Your dad’s doin’ his best to start an argument,” Michael muttered.

“I know,” she leaned her head against his shoulder. “I’m proud of you.”

“Why? I haven’t done anything.”

“Yeah, if I were you I would’ve already kicked my Dad’s ass,” she snickered slightly.

He snorted. “Yeah, well, as much as I’d like to do that... probably wouldn’t help matters much.”

She sighed. “At least he didn’t start with somethin’ like: How’re you gonna take care of my daughter? What’re your plans for the future?” She made a face. “Pretty sure those questions will still come out though.”

He shrugged. “S’okay, I’ve got the answer for every single one of those questions.”

“Gimme a kiss,” she grabbed his collar and pulled him down.

Michael’s right hand cradled her neck as he indulged her demand and kissed her thoroughly.

“I never wanna miss this again,” she breathed before her parents came into the room.

“You never will,” he promised.

“Sooo,” Amy smiled at the young couple. “Have a seat.”

Maria glanced at Michael and gave him an encouraging slight shove towards his chair.

Carson made a sound of impatience as he took his own seat.

“This looks good, Mom.” Maria glanced over the table and her stomach rumbled at the smell of dinner, even if she didn’t feel very hungry.

Michael nodded silently. It did look good, he thought. He was hungry but somehow he had a feeling that anything he ate was just going to feel like lead in his stomach.

Everyone was quiet while Amy was busy filling their plates with the dinner she had prepared during the day. The tension in the room was almost palpable and she didn’t know what to do about it. Hopefully easting together peacefully was possible.

Maria looked at her dad, wondering if he was ever going to accept Michael and her together. “So, how long are you guys gonna stay up here?” she asked.

“We haven’t decided. Your father’s off from work for two weeks.”

“How’s work, Dad?”

“The same as usual. A lot of sick people out there.”

Michael looked at Carson and forced himself to participate in the conversation. The man was an FBI agent and he had worked in the violent crimes division before Michael had left. “You’re still workin’ violent crimes?” he asked.

“Somebody has to do the dirty jobs,” the man answered coldly. He had seen a lot of shit in his life and it was just another reason why he didn’t want to be her daughter in the wrong hands.

Michael’s right hand clenched into a fist at the man’s taunt. “Just because I’m not out chasin’ down criminals doesn’t make my job any less important, Mr. DeLuca,” he said, forcing his voice to stay calm.

“Oh, yeah, and you think guiding people up a mountain where no one should be anyway is really necessary?” Carson said back with a growl.

“Dad, stop it!” Maria hissed. “His job is important. And if it weren’t for him Mark would’ve fallen off of that mountain.”

“Why go up there anyway? It’s dangerous, cold and uncomfortable. You can get that view from anywhere else.”

“Actually, you can’t get that view anywhere else. As for why people climb... it’s a challenge that pits them against Mother Nature. And there’s nothin’ like that last day of a climb when you reach the summit and you’re standin’ on top of the world,” Michael said.

Carson snorted. “On the top of the world.”

“It’s an amazing feeling, Dad,” Maria said. “You guys should try it some time.”

Amy smiled at her daughter. “I doubt I’d be able to do that.”

“No, Mom, you could! You’d love it if you just gave it a shot.”

Michael nodded. “Yeah, and there’re easier routes to climb too.”

Carson shook his head. “We’re not participating in this nonsense.”

Maria glanced at Michael as he has dismissed again. Even if he pretended to be calm and cool, she could see how much her father’s words hurt him and she hated it. “No one will force you I guess,” she mumbled and concentrated on her food since everything they talked about was turned around on Michael by her father.

“No one forces me to do a damn thing,” Carson said as he ignored his food to stare at the younger man seated across from him. “Do you intend to find a job more suited to an adult anytime soon?”

Maria let her fork fall to her plate with a clattering sound and got up from her seat. “Okay, that’s it! You wanna sit here all night and tell me how you don’t approve of our relationship then do that, Dad. But I’m not just gonna sit here and let you talk to and about Michael the way you do.”

Carson’s gaze didn’t waver at the racket or his daughter’s outburst. “I’m waitin’, Michael. Explain to me how exactly you intend to take care of my daughter and provide her with things that you know will never be within your means?”

Michael lifted his head slowly to meet the older man’s steely gaze. “No, Mr. DeLuca, I’ll never be able to give her the things someone like Mark can give her. I’m never gonna have money like you have or like he has. But I can love your daughter more than anyone else. I can care for her and I can be man enough to know when she needs to do things for herself. I can’t promise to ever be able to give her anything money can buy, but I can give her everything that money CAN’T buy. I look at her and I can see the future, I can see someone that loves me for the boy I was, the man I am, and the man I will be. She believes in me, I believe in her, and together we believe in each other and our ability to make a life together. Maybe to you that isn’t much, but it’s all I have to offer.”

Amy’s heard melted at the words the boy dedicated to her daughter. There was no doubt he loved her unconditionally.

“We are not livin’ in a fairytale here,” Carson said, slamming his flat hand on the table, making both women flinch. “I don’t doubt your love for her boy, but your feelings won’t get you anywhere if you’re not able to keep up a life worthy of her.”

“Who said anything about a friggin’ fairytale?” Michael snapped. “Maybe you need to take a better look at what your daughter’s lookin’ for ‘cause I can damn well assure you it’s not a fairytale. I have a job, I work hard and I make a decent living. I’ve never made myself out to be more than what I am.”

Carson shook his head, laughing ironically. “You did that the moment you showed interest in my daughter.”

“Why? Because you don’t think I’m good enough for her?”

Maria placed a hand on Michael's shoulder. “We’re leavin’!” She couldn’t stand the yelling and accusations any longer and it would only get worse with every passing second.

“Young lady, I insist you sit down at this table, right now!” Carson demanded.

Michael shook his head as he stood up. “You might be her father, but you have no right to speak to her like that.”

“I may still be young, Dad, but I’m not too young to live my own life.”

“You’re too emotional to be involved in this conversation. I’m doin’ what’s best for you, Maria. You can’t see that right now, but one day when you have children of your own you’ll understand.”

She just shook her head at her father sadly. She was not the one who was too emotionally involved here. “C’mon,” she said to Michael, “let’s get outta here.”

“Carson, do something before she walks out that door,” Amy insisted quietly. “You’re pushing her away and if you don’t watch it we’re gonna lose her.”

Carson glanced at his wife while his brain was busy running over the possibilities. “Maria,” he stepped in the hallway, “don’t you dare to leave like this.”

She stopped at the front door and turned to look at her father. “Are you willing to accept Michael into our family?”

He straightened up to his full height and his face started to turn red as the vein in his forehead began to throb. “We can discuss that later,” he hedged.

She shook her head. “There is no later, Dad.”

Michael could feel the guilt pushing at him when she turned to the front door once more. “Don’t do this, Mr. DeLuca,” he said. “Don’t make her choose between us.”

“Me?” Carson yelled. “You’re the reason for this mess!”

“Maria...” Amy called her daughter.

“Sorry, Mom,” she mumbled, feeling wave of sadness wash over her as she saw her mother’s face. Maria forced her gaze back to her father. “If you’re not willing to accept him then you can consider yourself childless from now on.” With that she stormed out of the cabin.

Michael glanced at her mother and he smiled sadly. “I’m sorry, Mrs. DeLuca.” He turned and followed Maria without another word.

Amy stared at the closed front door in shock as she tried to process what had just happened. “Oh my God,” she stuttered.

Carson reached out to touch her and he frowned when she pulled away from him. “She’ll be back, Amy.”

“No,” she shook her head furiously. “She won’t come back, Carson.”

“It’s only a matter of time,” he said.

“No!” she yelled. “Can’t you see it? We’re losing her!”

“We are not losing her,” he insisted angrily. “That boy won’t stick around.”

“That boy loves her more than anyone else, Carson. Why is that so hard for you to accept?”

“He’s not good enough for her!” he shouted.

“He’s the only one she wants, that makes him good enough,” she shouted back.

“And what happens when she realizes he can’t take care of her? What happens when his pathetic little job won’t pay the bills? Or when he loses his temper and hits her? I see that shit all the time in my job... I do not want to see it happen to my daughter!”

“And you think a different man is a guarantee that those things won’t happen?”

“There are no guarantees in life, Amy, but there are more suitable men out there.”

“I’m not willing to lose my daughter because you’re too stubborn,” she growled as she started to head back in the dining room to clean up.

Carson threw his hands up in the air as he growled in frustration. She was being irrational and too emotional; she couldn’t see the situation the way he did. He ignored that little voice telling him that she was right.

“I insist you sleep on the couch tonight,” she told him when he had followed her into the room.

He sighed. “Amy... she’ll come around.”

“She doesn’t need to. I’ll go and see her, tell her she has at least one parent who’s willing to support her.”

“We have to present a united front.”

“That doesn’t seem possible here.”

“If you do things my way it is.”

“I won’t sit back and wait, Carson. Not this time.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Only one of us thinks you’re right… and it isn’t me.”

He sighed at her stubborn tone but he knew better than to argue with her in this mood. He had already been banished to the couch for the night so there was no reason to push her to add anything to that. “I’m going to the study.”

Amy watched him leave and shook her head sadly.

Carson walked into the smaller room on the other side of the hallway and sat down in the comfortable chair behind the wooden desk. He leaned back and took in some deep breaths as he went over the evening again. His gaze wandered over the empty desk in front of him and stopped on his cell. He bit his bottom lip, considering his next move for a moment before he nodded to himself and picked the phone up to dial the number.

His left hand moved over the armrest of the chair as she waited for the other person to pick up.

“Rita Jamison speaking,” a woman’s voice came over the line.

“Rita,” he greeted her, “Carson DeLuca here.”

“What’s up, Carson? I thought you were on vacation?”

“I need you to get me some information about someone,” he said, ignoring her question.

She rolled her eyes at his behavior. Carson wasn’t exactly known as Mr. Equality around the office. “Gimme the details and I’ll get you the info ASAP.”

“It’s Guerin, Michael. I don’t know his exact birthday, but he’s 21, born in Roswell, New Mexico.”

“Probably don’t have too many guys with that name in Roswell. It won’t take long to run his background. You want me to pull anything else on him? Credit report, maybe?”

“I want every bit of information you can get.”

“No problem. I’ll call you back as soon as I’ve got the information unless you want it faxed to you?”

“No, call me on my cell,” he told her. The last thing he needed was proof of his actions.

“Got it. Give me a couple of hours and I’ll give ya a call back.”

Carson nodded to himself. “I’ll wait to hear from you.” With that he disconnected the call. There was plenty of time to get his bed for the night ready before she called back.

Part 51

Post by Double Trouble »

Eva: True, he did nothing to show himself in a better light, did he?

Michael had to keep a tight rein on his temper because what it all came down to was exactly what he wanted to avoid: Maria choosing between them. We were proud of him. 

Carson will find something… but, what?

keepsmiling7: Max always knows, lol.

begonia9508: Carson knows better, but he’s stuck on thinking lots of money makes all the difference and he can protect his daughter from everything. Maria knows exactly who and what she wants.

Earth2Mother: Lol, he definitely took it up a level.

We’ll find out what happens from his nosing around in Michael’s business.

Thanks!

mary mary: Carson doesn’t necessarily think he’s so much better that everyone around him… he simply believes his daughter can do better. Well, he could do that… but it would just be so messy.

The other four, lol… yeah, Michael and Maria really could’ve done with an enjoyable night out.

Natalie36: Perhaps Carson will eat crow for a different reason…

Alien_Friend: Yup, it was bound to happen. It’s likely that Carson will have to drop this insanity soon. Amy is on the side of our Candy couple.

Leave it to the four of them to get kicked out of the theater, lol.

Thanks!

We’ll do our best… we’re just following where the characters lead us. ;)

sarammlover: Possibly… but don’t forget, there’s Amy to consider in that equation.  Well, if we could convince him to get up on that mountain and take a little fall we’d be happy to have Michael come to his rescue. Thanks!

kismet: They did indeed, lol. Somehow, we’re pretty sure there was no refund. You’re right, it wasn’t a very professional thing for Carson to do… but you just never know what he’ll learn from his actions.

killjoy: Yes… yes, he was.

No, that’s true. And if he pushes it much farther we’ve got a feeling we might not hear from Carson again.

Lol, well… we’ll never know if they would’ve talked through the movie itself. Chances are good though that they would’ve quickly lost all interest in verbalization. ;)

Part 52

The silence in the truck had been deafening as Michael drove back to his apartment. He glanced at Maria as he pulled into his parking space and killed the engine. He cleared his throat as he pulled the key from the ignition. “So...” he said, unsure about his next move.

“Why don’t you go and stoke up the fire while I run to the store and get us a bottle of wine?” she asked, not really wanting to talk about dinner. Or dinner that wasn’t much of a dinner.

He nodded as he looked around. It wasn’t completely dark yet, but it was getting close. “You wanna take the truck?”

“No, I’ll be faster on my own two feet,” she said. Besides that a little cold wind in her face was probably a good idea right now.

“Okay.” He pulled his wallet out of his back pocket and dug around in one of the compartments to pull out his spare key. He handed it to her with a small smile.

She took it from him and closed her hand around it as she looked up at him. “I’ll be back in a few. Make sure you put a soft blanket in front of the fireplace for when I get home.”

“Plannin’ on spendin’ the night there?”

She shrugged. “Probably.”

He leaned over to kiss her cheek. “Be careful and don’t be gone long.”

“I won’t,” she promised and climbed out of the truck.

Michael walked up to his apartment, hating the fact that once again he felt like he was coming between Maria and her parents. He unlocked his front door and stepped inside, kicking the door closed and looking around at his meager furnishings. She deserved more than this. “Cut it out, Guerin,” he muttered to himself as he crossed the room to get a fire going. He knew he was better than what Carson DeLuca thought of him.

Maria reached the shop in just a few minutes and decided to buy something to eat as well. She collected some things that they could just tear open and eat as well as the bottle of wine.

God, the dinner had been awful and she felt kind of numb right now. She didn’t want to think about it, but she knew she had to. Her father had been the asshole she had expected him to be. She shook her head and snorted ironically. Why had she even had allowed herself to get her hopes up that he would accept Michael into their family? It had been so clear he wouldn’t.

“Everything okay?” the teenager behind the counter asked as a tear slipped down her cheek.

She glanced at him, surprised that she hadn’t even been thinking about the fact she was still in public. Her hand came up to brush the tear away. “Yeah, thanks.”

She waited until he told her the price of all things and she placed a bill on the counter, telling him to keep the change and leaving quickly.

It took her only a few minutes to get back to Michael’s apartment and she pulled the key out of her jeans pocket and unlocked the door.

Michael glanced up from his position crouched in front of the fireplace. He had thrown a couple of the pillows from the couch down on top of the blankets he had layered to make a pallet, hoping to make it more comfortable.

“Hey,” she said quietly. “That looks comfy.”

He smiled slightly. “Hope so.”

She kicked the door shut behind her and walked further into the room, placing all the things she had bought on the floor. “Grabbed somethin’ to eat since we didn’t eat much and your fridge is in very sad shape.”

“Yeah, guess we’ll have to do somethin’ about that,” he said quietly.

“You got glasses?” She held the wine bottle up with a questioning face.

“Just regular drinking glasses,” he answered with a self-conscious shrug.

She glanced at him sadly and got up to her feet to walk towards him. “Don’t let his words get to you Michael,” she begged. She was scared he would think too much about what her father had said and start to doubt himself again. That wasn’t supposed to happen.

“I just...” he backed away, shaking his head. “I’ll get a couple glasses.”

She sighed, but let him have his space for now as she went back to sit in front of the fireplace. “Bring somethin’ to open the bottle,” she told him and started to rip the food open.

Michael braced his hands on the counter as he let his head hang low between his shoulders. “Damn it,” he muttered under his breath. “You’re not what he thinks you are... you’re better than that.” The words were meant to convince him but it wasn’t working. He pulled a couple of glasses down and then paused as he looked around for something to open a bottle of wine with. Corkscrew, right? He checked his pockets and pulled his pocket knife out. It had plenty of different uses and he was sure one of the blades was a corkscrew. Yep, there it was. He picked the glasses up and walked back out into the living room.

Maria glanced up when he finally joined her, sitting as far away as possible though. “Don’t do this, Michael!”

“Do what?” he asked, allowing his irritation with the situation creep into his tone. He didn’t know why he was doing this, trying to pick a fight, but he couldn’t stop himself.

“This,” she gestured at the space between them.

He got to his feet and started to pace, his agitation clearly visible. “Look, I’m not goin’ anywhere or anything, but you’ve gotta understand that this’s what I was tryin’ to avoid two years ago.”

“Yeah, and remember how well that went the first time,” she muttered sarcastically because she was hurt by his rejection.

“Maria, look... I don’t wanna hurt you. I’m just tryin’ to work this out in my head. I thought I was ready to walk in there and have your dad dump on me again, but I guess I wasn’t as ready as I thought I was.”

“Why can’t you do that while you’re over here with me?” She wrapped her arms around herself and stared into the fire. She wanted him to hold her, needed to be close to him right now.

Michael took a deep breath as he reached up to rub his eyes. “I’m sorry, Maria, I don’t mean to take it out on you.” He could see that he was putting distance between them and the look on her face made that painfully clear to him. He moved back across the room to sit down beside her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

“I need you right now,” she sobbed against his chest, her feelings overwhelming her when he pulled her close. She didn’t want to cry, especially not in front of him because it would make him even more miserable, but she couldn’t hold it back.

“Aww, hell, Maria,” he whispered against her hair as he rocked her back and forth. “It’s gonna be okay.” He forced his own thoughts away, not wanting to think about what her dad had said. The man had managed to argue every point he had made.

“I hate him,” she mumbled after starting to calm down.

His right hand was wrapped around her neck, his fingertips massaging her tense muscles. “Don’t waste the energy on hatin’ him, baby.” He couldn’t find it in himself to defend her dad’s actions any longer.

She nodded. “You’re right. I’m just sorry that it’s my fault my parents are gonna have a major fight now.”

“It’s not your fault,” he insisted fiercely. “Your dad started this by refusing to accept us together. If they’re gonna argue because your mom’s finally accepted us... let ‘em argue, maybe she’ll knock some sense into his thick skull.”

She snorted. “He lost his sense a long time ago.” She turned her head to look at the items in front of the fireplace. “How about we drown my dad’s words with some wine?”

Michael felt himself beginning to relax and he nodded. “Sure, let’s give it a shot.”

“Okay, let the air out of the glasses then.”

Michael got up to grab the glasses and the bottle of wine, placing them within easier reach and then pulling his pocketknife out before sitting back down. He settled behind her and stretched his legs out on either side of her as he uncorked the bottle. He poured wine in the first glass and held it out to her, waiting until she had accepted it before filling the second. “Put wine glasses on your list,” he said as he leaned forward to kiss her shoulder.

“Already did that,” she tapped her temple. “All in here.”

He snorted. “I can just imagine what that list is startin’ to look like.”

“Well, she’ll be pretty long, buddy.”

“Uh-huh... we won’t be getting that list in one trip, will we?” he teased, relaxing when she just laughed quietly and leaned back into him.

“Since you’re probably gonna have a month off, I think we can take our time with it.”

He took a sip of his wine and stared into the fireplace for a moment. “I’m not that excited about shoppin’, but I might actually enjoy this.”

She leaned her head back to look at him. “Stuff like wine glasses aren’t really important right now. I can get little things like that while you’re up on the mountain, baby.”

He chuckled. “One set of wine glasses won’t set us back. Besides, we’re gonna run across ‘em while we’re pickin’ up everything else.”

“When ya wanna start with all this?”

“We can start whenever you wanna get started. You think we should bring your stuff up here first? I guess there’s probably some stuff we could pick up before then.”

She sighed. “Why don’t we plan this tomorrow? I have to go back to the devil’s cabin to get my stuff.”

“Sounds good.” He fell silent as he thought back over the evening, wondering if there was anything he could’ve said or done differently that would’ve changed her dad’s view of him and their relationship.

Maria sipped on her wine, lost in thoughts about the evening. Her dad hadn’t even planned to TRY to accept Michael.

Michael knew where her thoughts were and it was hard to try to distract her when his thoughts were in a very similar place.

“Imagine when we’re sitting in front of the fireplace at the cabin sometime in the future,” she whispered to pull her thoughts towards something good.

He smiled at that thought. “It’s gorgeous up at the cabin when it snows.”

“And it’ll be even better with our little puppy dog,” she teased. “The black Labrador.”

“Um-hmm, got your heart set on that dog, don’t you?” he asked with a smile.

“On you and the dog,” she insisted with a wink.

He chuckled. “Well, I suppose if that’s what you want...”

She placed her glass aside and turned halfway around to rest her side against his chest. “In the first place, I wanna be with you.”

“I know that,” he said quietly. “I’ve never had a single doubt about whether or not you wanted to be with me.”

She smiled slightly and took his hand in her hers, letting her fingers trace over his palm. “Some things never change.”

“Me leavin’ had nothin’ to do with wantin’ to be with you, Maria. There’s nothin’ I’ve ever wanted more and I hope to God you know that.”

“Do you believe we’ll still feel that way as the years go by?”

“Yeah,” he answered without hesitating.

“Then marry me, Michael,” she blurted out.

He choked on the drink of wine he had just taken and he quickly covered his mouth as he started to cough. “What?” he asked hoarsely.

She sat up straighter, pulling her lower legs towards her. “I’m asking you to marry me,” she said, blushing a little.

“Marry you...” he cleared his throat as he shifted away from her, unintentionally creating distance between them. “No! I mean...” he shoved himself to his feet as he started to pace. “Yeah, one day, but...” Her father’s words echoed in his head, reminding him that he had nothing to offer her. He did have something to offer her. He did. He shoved those thoughts aside. She loved him and she wanted him, what else really mattered? “But, not now, Maria. Not yet.”

“Why not?” she asked, confused. She stayed were she was. “You just said you were so sure you’ll still feel the same for me in a few years. So why not now?”

“It’s too soon! Hell, Maria, we just found each other again.” And you’ve already chosen me over your parents, he added silently.

She turned away from him to hide her hurt and embarrassment that she had just asked him that. But she had been so sure... “Fine.”

Fine. A single word in the female language that meant things were anything but fine. “Hey, I want that, but one day in the future, ya know? When I’ve got more to off... when we’re a little more settled.” He winced, knowing there was no way she had missed that slip.

She got to her feet quickly and faced him. “For God’s sake, Michael, when will you finally stop thinking you’re not good enough for me?” she asked him angrily. “You said you were ready to face my parents, you PROMISED me you wouldn’t make the same mistake again.”

“Damn it, Maria, I’m not runnin’! I’m standin’ right here!” He ran a hand through his hair as he inhaled raggedly. “This isn’t about bein’ good enough for you. It’s about... it’s about...” He shook his head and crossed to the door, grabbing his jacket on the way. “I’ve gotta get some air.”

“Don’t just leave like this, Michael,” she half screamed, half begged.

“I just need to clear my head. I’ll be back.”

“Yeah, and maybe I’ll be gone then,” she muttered as she went in the direction of the bathroom.

Michael started to say something else, but he didn’t want this to turn into a big fight. He just needed to get out and walk for a while, shake off the dinner and the things her father had said to him. He didn’t know if she could understand that, but he knew he needed to work some things out before he could sit down and talk to her about this. He pulled the door open and stepped out into the hall.

“Jerk!” Maria yelled as she slammed the bathroom door shut behind her.

Michael winced when her voice carried through the front door. Great, he had gone from ‘marry me’ to ‘jerk’ in less than five minutes.

Carson stared at his glass of whisky. The brown liquid glistened from the reflection of the fire in the fireplace. His wife hadn’t talked to him after the fight and she had been gone upstairs right after the kitchen was cleaned up again.

He glanced at his watch. It was already after 10pm. Rita should be calling him back anytime now. He knew he was stretching the patience of everyone right now, especially Amy, but he couldn’t help it. That boy meant trouble, he was sure of it. Rita would give him something... anything that would prove him right and everyone would thank him for investigating.

He winced when his cell started to ring loudly and he picked it up quickly before Amy would hear it and got suspicious. “What took you so long?”

Rita rolled her eyes at his irritable question. “Personal requests do not take precedence over official requests, Carson. Not even when you’re the requestor.”

“Tell me what you’ve got.”

“I don’t have much,” she said, knowing that would piss him off. “He’s got a couple things on his record from his teens, but nothing serious. No red flags since then. Not so much as a parking ticket.” She sighed and glanced over the folder in front of her. “His credit report’s clean. It looks like he and two other young men have been making inquiries into opening their own business.” She scanned over the report she held. “They spoke with a banker in Mount Rainier about a loan recently and from everything I can see it looks like the banker’s report was favorable. Um, his credit cards are all well under their limit, his bills are paid on time, his checking and savings accounts are both substantial and from everything I can see this guy’s clean.”

Carson frowned. He wanted to open up his own business? His boss hadn’t said anything about that. “How much money has he saved up?”

“His savings account is sitting right at $37,000. This guy doesn’t spend much; it looks like the majority of his earnings go into savings. His checking account is sitting right below $9,000. He must be serious about this business because I don’t know any guys his age who make money like that and have these kinda numbers in the bank.”

“Yeah, well, the boy obviously knows what he wants,” Carson admitted grudgingly.

She snorted derisively. “Ya think? I don’t know the guy, but just from checking him out I’d say chances are good he’s gonna get what he wants.”

He growled something unintelligible into the phone that Rita couldn’t decipher. “Anything else? You said there’re a few things in his teens, what’re we talkin’ about?”

She shook her head. What was his issue with this guy? “What is this guy doin’ to piss you off, Carson? Dating your daughter?” She shook her head and continued without waiting for a response. “Just your basic teenage boy stuff... he was picked up for bein’ out past curfew, skipping school and a few counts of underage drinking. There were a couple of reports filed by neighbors for suspicion of abuse, but it doesn’t look like anything ever came of the reports.”

Yeah, he knew that much, the boy’s foster father had been a bastard by every definition. “No criminal report? No hidden secret?”

“Hell, Carson, I know how to run a background check. There were no red flags in his file. He doesn’t have a history of criminal behavior, no warrants, and nothing suspicious shows up.”

He sighed. “Alright. Thanks anyway.”

She rolled her eyes as she disconnected the call. He could be such an ass.

“You can’t stop yourself, can you?” Amy asked, as she leaned in the doorframe. She had been listening to his call for a while now.

Carson grimaced when his wife spoke up from behind him. He slowly turned around to look at her. “I have a right to know what kind of man he is.”

She lifted one eyebrow doubtfully. “And? Did you find out now that he’s secretly a serial killer?”

He shifted uncomfortably under her disapproving gaze. “No.”

“Did you find something else? Something that will justify your behavior towards that boy?”

“Amy, you have to see where I’m coming from!”

“I understood it when they were back in high school, Carson, and I understood it when he just showed up in our lives here again. But you have no reason to think about that boy the way you do! He’s a good boy and he cares about our daughter.”

“He should’ve said he was plannin’ to go into business, that he was financially stable! Not as stable as Mark is obviously, but he could’ve stood up for himself.”

She snorted. “You didn’t even give him a chance to say anything, Carson. Every time they said something you came up with something to turn them down.”

“Well, how was I supposed to know that he could take care of her?” He took a drink from the glass in his hand. “He didn’t say a word to defend himself!”

She ran her hand through her hair. “What the hell is your problem with taking care of our daughter?” she yelled. “We have enough money to support them financially if they ever needed it, so do this family a favor and stop putting his issue into the foreground. We don’t live in the dark ages anymore, Carson.”

“That boy’s bull-headed. He’d never take money from us!” He took a step back when he realized what he had just said.

Amy lifted an eyebrow in question as her hands rested on her hips. “Sooo?”

He sat down and stared into his glass. “She’s got her heart set on bein’ with him and I’m runnin’ outta reasons to try and stop it.”

“Took you long enough,” Amy muttered as she sat down beside him.

“She’s my baby girl, Amy.” He rubbed his eyes tiredly. “I just don’t wanna see her end up with a guy who isn’t good enough for her.” Not that any guy would ever be good enough, he thought.

“No guy will ever be good enough for her in your eyes,” Amy said aloud what he had thought.

“Is this where you tell me I’ve been short-sighted and narrow-minded and an assortment of other things?”

“Guess you already know that,” she said with a small smile.

He winced. “So, how do I fix this?” He sighed as he recalled the words Maria had thrown at him before storming out earlier. “How do I make it right and get my daughter back?”

“How about talking to her? Just tell her what you told me right now.” She chewed on her lip. “And you might wanna make an attempt to talk to her boyfriend as well.”

He growled at that and reached up to rub his eyes.

“She’s not the one who didn’t try, Carson.”

“She’s not gonna wanna talk to me,” he said, hurting inside as he realized just how true that was.

“She will.”

“After the way she ran outta here?” He shook his head.

“Just give her a little time to cool off. She’s so much like you talking to her tonight would be a waste of time. Was she pissed? Oh yeah, but she also loves you too much to just walk away.”

He nodded. “I really screwed this one up.”

She kissed his temple and rubbed his shoulder. “It’s not too late to fix things, honey.”

He turned his head to look at her. “You really believe that?”

“Yeah, I do.”

He nodded. “Should I go see her tomorrow?”

Amy nodded. “Sounds good. You’ll wanna wait until later in the day though.”

“Why?”

“Give her some time to think about things first. And give them a little time as well.”

“It was never my intention to push her away. I was just doin’ what I thought was best for her.”

“I know that, but now it’s time for you to admit that you made a mistake.”

“To Maria?” His back teeth started to grind together because he just knew she was gonna tell him he needed to admit it to Michael too.

She smiled and laid a hand on his shoulder. “To both of them.”

*****

Maria moved around the apartment restlessly after Michael took off, her mind moving in a dozen different directions. She wasn’t exactly sure what had just happened. All she knew was that Michael was gone and she needed someone to talk to. She had no idea where Michael had gone to ‘clear his head’ or when he would be back and she wasn’t going to just sit here and wait.

She glanced around and her gaze landed on the counter and his keys. He wouldn’t care if she took his truck, she thought. It wasn’t like she was running back to California, she was just going to see her friends. She took the time to put the fire out before she snatched his keys up and grabbed her jacket on her way out the door. The evening air was cool and she shivered slightly as she hurried out to his truck, unlocking the door and quickly climbing inside.

It took about 20 minutes to get back to the lodge because she got turned around a couple of times and another 10 to get to the cabin. She reached up to wipe away the few tears that had escaped her eyes before she pushed the door open and ran up to the front door of the cabin.

Max was in the kitchen making coffee when he heard someone crossing the porch and his eyebrows lifted in surprise when he heard a key turning in the lock and then the door was pushed open.

“Uh-oh,” he muttered under his breath when he noticed her upset features. “Maria? What’s wrong?”

“Where’s Liz?” she asked, ignoring his question.

He turned slightly and pointed to one of the bedrooms. “Okay, it’s gotta be bad then,” he mumbled as he went back to making coffee. They’d let him know if his input was needed.

Post by Double Trouble »

Earth2Mother: True… but Michael’s not running here. He just needs to think and he’ll be back.

There are definite similarities between the two of them. They both care about and love Maria a great deal.

keepsmiling7: We’ll see soon. ;)

Eva: Doubts can be very damaging but Michael is in a much better place than he was before so hopefully this won’t cause any lasting problems.

We’ll find out soon.

Natalie36: You can expect more of those parts, lol.

begonia9508: C’mon, they’re men, lol, what’s to understand? ;) Do they ever make anything easy?

mary mary: One word, so many meanings, lol.

Oh, Carson hasn’t been exonerated by any means. And he still has to face his daughter.

Alien_Friend: It’s true, and while Michael’s managed to work past a lot of his issues, facing someone like Carson certainly brings all of those old doubts rushing to the surface. He’ll be coming back soon, he just needed to get his thoughts in order.

We’ll see how the talk between the girls goes in this next part.

Ya like the sound of that, huh?

killjoy: You’re right, he definitely jumped the gun here.

XAF RU208: Thanks for reading!

Part 53

Liz glanced up when there was a quiet knock at the door but before she could answer it was opened and Maria stepped inside. “Okay, you’re not Max with my coffee,” she mused with a smile that quickly faded when she realized something was wrong. “Maria? What happened?”

The blonde shrugged when new tears welled up her eyes and she wasn’t able to talk past the lump in her throat.

“Your dad? Or Michael?” Liz asked, knowing it had to be one of them.

“Both,” Maria sobbed.

“Oh, Maria,” she whispered as she got up and wrapped her arms around her friend. “Dinner didn’t go well?”

Maria welcomed the hug from her best friend. She shook her head. “It was pretty much horrible.”

“Did you get in an argument with your dad?”

“An argument? No, it was pretty much just a lot of yelling and then at the end I told him to consider himself childless if he’s not gonna accept Michael.”

“Oh... ouch. Maria, he’s gonna come around.” He would, right? Her dad was pretty rigid, but he did love his daughter. “How did Michael do at dinner?”

“As well as he could I guess.”

“Okay, you’re not this upset about your dad ‘cause he pretty much acted like you thought he would.” She let go of Maria and took her hand, pulling her over to sit on the couch against the wall. “Where’s Michael?”

She snorted. “I don’t know. Somewhere to... CLEAR his head.”

“Because of your dad’s behavior at dinner?” She studied Maria’s expression. “You guys got into a fight afterwards?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

“Tell me what happened. What were you fighting about?”

“About the way he pulls away from me and how my father’s words affect him and...” Maria avoided looking at Liz, it was so embarrassing, “somethin’ else.”

Liz zeroed in on that. “What? You know you can tell me, Maria.”

“But it’s sooo... embarrassing.”

“Embarrassing? Wait, you did something embarrassing?”

“It’s embarrassing considering his answer to it.”

“Okay, now you’re just draggin’ it out... what was the question?”

Maria stared at her hands in her lap. Hands where no ring would be seen anytime soon. “I asked him to marry me.”

Liz’s mouth dropped open in shock. “You asked him to... Whoa, wait just a minute, Maria! You guys just got back together after two years apart!” She paused to inhale a deep, calming breath. “You’re that sure of him?”

Maria glanced at her friend sadly. “I thought he was too.”

“You know me, I’m not a big mushy romantic or anything, but... maybe he just needs time to process what happened tonight, ya know? I mean, if it was me I’d be running too, but I have commitment issues.” She shook her head and met Maria’s gaze directly. “I don’t think commitment’s a problem with him.”

Maria sighed deeply. “I am such a fool.”

“Um...” Liz was confused. “Why?”

“Because I popped the question. You’re right, it’s probably way too soon.”

“Well, I don’t know about for you guys... I mean you’ve got serious history together and you want a future with him.” She shrugged her shoulders when Maria just gave her a look. “Yeah, okay, I think it’s too soon, but that’s me and I have issues.”

“I wish I could take it back.”

“What if he’d said yes?”

Maria snorted. “He said NO pretty clearly.”

“Just no? That’s all he said?” She doubted that was all he had said.

“He said no, not yet, or something like that…” Maria shrugged. “Felt like a NO.”

“Okay, ‘no, not yet’ is NOT the same as an outright ‘no’.” Liz snorted and shook her head. “C’mon, Maria, think... what else did he say?”

The other girl tried to remember anything else, but she couldn’t. “Guess I was too shocked to really listen.”

Liz fell silent as she tried to think up another angle. “I’m not exactly an expert with this stuff, but even I could see that he’s completely in love with you. Maybe you should just let things sit overnight and see what happens tomorrow.”

“Can I stay here tonight?”

Liz just rolled her eyes. “Like you have to ask!”

Maria smirked. “Where’re Kyle and Tess?”

“Another question with an obvious answer? Do you see what time it is?” She snorted. “They’re probably passed out cold by now.”

“Passed out...” Maria wiggled her eyebrows, trying to push her negative thoughts aside. “So, did you and Max get it on yet?”

Liz actually blushed and glanced away before a huge grin broke out on her face. “Yeah.”

“And? C’mon, ya gotta share!”

“Okay, I’m not exactly new to sex,” she wrinkled her nose and stuck her tongue out at Maria when she just snorted. “Anyway, it was... I don’t know, it was more, ya know? It was different with Max and I’m not exactly sure why.”

“Maybe because it was your first time with feelings involved?”

“Yeah, probably. I wasn’t expecting that... it’s like there was more intensity because there’s a connection between us. Does that make sense?” She shrugged. “I’m not explaining it very well.”

“No,” Maria shook her head, “it makes a lot of sense, believe me.”

“You should’ve seen him walkin’ around here this mornin’,” she said with a laugh.

“Big satisfied grin on his face, huh?”

“Yeah, major grin.”

“He’s just happy to finally get what he’s dreamed of for so long now.”

“Now I’m kickin’ myself... do you have any idea how long I’ve been missing out on this?”

“Well, I’ve known you two for a while and to be honest I was pretty sure from the start that Max was hiding something.”

“No more hiding,” Liz said with a smile. “For the first time in my life I can actually see something down the road with a guy, ya know?”

Maria hugged her friend. “I’m happy for you.”

“Thanks, girl. Now we’ve just gotta figure out what’s goin’ on with your guy.”

“I know what’s going on with him. He’s once again doubting that he’s good enough for me.”

“Are you sure that's what it is?”

“I’m still hoping it’s not...”

“What do your instincts tell you?”

“They tell me to not be too sure of anything in life.”

“I don’t think he’s – “

They looked up when the door opened and Tess stuck her head in. “What’s goin’ on in here?”

“You’re still up?” Liz asked, shocked.

“No, but Max is pacin’ the floor out there like crazy and he keeps steppin’ on that one creaky board and it woke me up so I figured I’d better come out and find out if you’d already kicked him outta bed.”

“It’s my fault he hasn’t been allowed to come to bed, yet,” Maria admitted.

Tess snorted as she closed the door and joined them on the couch. “Priceless. The guy’s finally getting some action and it’s a girl’s night in his room.”

“Don’t be so tactless, girl,” Liz slapped her on the shoulder.

“Seriously, Liz? You’re the person with the least amount of tact in this group.”

“Maybe I should just, ya know...” Maria pointed at the door, “make room for Max now.”

“Don’t really think he’s into foursomes,” Liz said with a teasing grin.

“Are you kidding? Any man would kill for it,” Tess said but winkled her nose. “Probably shouldn’t be the best friends though.”

“Yeah, well, Max isn’t every other man and while I’m still getting used to this... I’m not sharing him.”

“Uh-huh,” Maria stood up. “I think I’ll go and prepare my bed on the couch.”

“But, I just got here,” Tess pouted. She stomped her foot on the floor. “Someone tell me why you’re here and not with Michael.”

“Okay, short story: We got into a fight with my dad, went back to his apartment, snuggled up in front of the fireplace, I asked him to marry me and he said no.”

“Whoa, wait just a minute. Let’s back it up... you asked him to marry you?” She turned to look at Liz. “He said no?” she asked in a stage whisper.

“Come on,” Maria took her friend’s hand. “We can talk in the living room. Leave the two love birds alone now and you can get me something to drink out there. Something that’ll knock my thoughts off track, preferably. “

“Hey, I’ve already given her some good advice,” Liz said.

“Yes you did,” Maria smiled. “And now you’ll get some from me: Get it on with your boy but be quiet.”

Tess just rolled her eyes. “Are you kidding? It sounded like we had a pack of howling monkeys in the cabin last night.”

“You’re one to talk,” Liz rolled her eyes.

“So basically I can look forward to a night at the zoo?” Maria asked with a smirk.

*****

Michael entered the apartment and he knew before the door had closed behind him that Maria was gone. The place felt empty without her energetic presence there and he sighed as he crossed to the kitchen to get a beer from the refrigerator. He slammed the door and uncapped the bottle, taking a long drink as he wandered through the silent rooms.

He had spent nearly three hours just walking around, trying to clear his head. He had promised her he wouldn’t run again and he had a bad feeling she had mistaken his need to get his thoughts in order for running from the situation. He walked over to the couch, kneeling on it so he could look out into the parking lot when he noticed his keys weren’t on the counter where he had left them.

Maria had thrown him off balance with the marriage proposal. It wasn’t the thought of getting married that had caused him to balk, it was the timing. It was so close on the heels of the dinner where her father had attempted once more to make him feel worthless. He had walked away from that with his head held high, finally feeling as if the man was wrong about him. It was Maria’s parting words to her father that was bothering him so badly.

He had felt responsible for the divide between her and her parents. The walk had helped him to clear his mind though and he had remembered one of their conversations on the mountain. She had told him that her parents were the ones who would choose whether to maintain their relationship but she was the one who had thrown the gauntlet down. Her father was a stubborn man and she came by that trait honestly, but he couldn’t say which one would hold out longer.

He didn’t have any family to speak of so that parental connection wasn’t as important to him, but in spite of Maria’s words he knew she would hurt over the separation. He shifted around to lie back on the couch and stare up at the ceiling. He had to at least try to fix this mess. No, it wasn’t his fault that her father refused to accept him, but he loved her enough to try to make the man change his mind. He reached up to rub the bridge of his nose as he closed his eyes and sighed loudly. He checked his watch and decided it was too late to do anything about it tonight; her father already couldn’t stand him so waking him up at almost midnight wasn’t likely to help his case any.

He shifted to pull his phone out of his pocket and he made a call to the lodge so he could get the phone number for the cabin Maria’s friends were staying at. He punched in the number and then waited for someone to answer.

“Hello,” a male voice answered.

“Max,” Michael said, quickly identifying him, “this’s Michael. I was callin’ to see if Maria’s over there.”

“She’s here.”

He winced. Max’s voice was a bit frosty. “She okay?”

“She’s been talkin’ to Liz since she got here. What the fuck did you do to her?”

Michael cleared his throat. “I appreciate your concern for her, but that’s between us.”

Max snorted. “Buddy, it was between the two of you before she started talkin’ to Liz… if I were you I’d avoid Liz in the near future. Kidding aside, we’re a tight group and hurtin’ Maria is a surefire way to get shut out.”

“And like I said, it’s between us.”

“She’s just recently started to calm down so I’m not gonna go in there and upset her all over again. From what I overheard earlier it sounded like she’ll be stayin’ here tonight.”

Michael nodded. “I’ll talk to her tomorrow then. Just… take care of her.” He ignored the smart remark that Max shot back at him and disconnected the call. He tossed the phone on the coffee table and dropped back against the couch, rubbing his eyes tiredly.

Damn it, he hadn’t meant to upset her so badly. He wondered if it was her belief that he was running out again or if it was his response to her proposal that had done it. He should’ve reacted better, he thought. If it hadn’t been so soon after that disaster of a dinner he would’ve been better prepared for her proposal. Was it really that surprising that she had suggested they get married? Hell, they had known they wanted to be together since they were 16 years old. They still wanted to be together and they still loved each other, neither of those things had changed.

He had to prove to Maria that he was the man she believed him to be. He sat up suddenly as an idea began to form in his mind. He smiled to himself and got to his feet, grabbing a notepad and pen off of the counter. He grabbed a bag of chips out of one of the cabinets and settled down on one of the bar stools. It was time to put his past to rest and show her once and for all that he was ready to move forward and make a life with her.

*****

It was early in the morning, shortly after eight, when Michael got up after a night of restless sleep and bad dreams. He had taken his cell twice to call Maria, but then had decided to wait until morning. It had been 6am when he hadn’t had felt strong enough to wait any longer and he had punched in a text message for her, a single line that had said: I miss you.

As he was getting ready to leave his apartment it suddenly occurred to him that Maria had taken his truck. He cursed under his breath as he dialed Tony’s number.

“What the fuck, Guerin?” A grumbling Tony answered the phone.

“Can I borrow your truck?”

“NOW?” the other man asked in disbelief. “We’re off from work for once, why the hell are you already up?”

“NOW,” Michael replied simply.

“Fine, I’ll be here.”

“Keys?”

“Just knock when ya get here.”

Michael disconnected the call and was already out of his own apartment. The other guide only lived about half a mile away from him and he reached his place pretty quickly.

Tony opened the door before he could knock and threw the keys at him, mumbling a “bring it back before tonight,” before closing the door again.

Michael shook his head at his behavior and walked back to the parking lot to get Tony’s truck, which was similar to his own. He got behind the steering wheel and took some deep breathes before starting the engine. Alright, he better get this day started, there was a lot to do.

The drive to the cabin where Maria’s parents were staying didn’t take very long at this time of the day. It was still too early for the tourists to be filling the streets and getting in the way. He parked the truck right in front and walked up to the front door with long strong steps before he could think twice. He raised his hand and knocked on the door, feeling his nerves pick at him while he waited.

Amy pulled the door open and quickly hid her surprise when she saw the young man standing there. She smiled slowly and took a step back, motioning for him to enter. “Good morning, Michael.”

“Good morning, Mrs. Deluca,” he said back as he stepped in slowly.

“You’re here to speak with Carson,” she guessed, watching him as he shifted from one foot to the other.

Michael nodded. “Maria doesn’t know I’m here.”

She wasn’t surprised by that bit of information. “How is she?” Amy asked.

Michael tried to decide if he should be honest or not right now. Should he admit the fight?

“Michael?” She studied him when he didn’t answer. “Please tell me the two of you didn’t get into an argument because of what happened at dinner last night.”

“Well…”

Amy winced. “Are the two of you alright?”

“I haven’t talked to her yet. Gonna go see her after this.”

“She spent the night with her friends,” she guessed. She reached out to pat his arm. “You’ll work it out.”

“I hope,” he said quietly.

“Have a seat and I’ll get Carson for you.”

“Alright, thanks.” He glanced around the room and took the armchair next to the fireplace as Amy disappeared.

Carson walked down the hall, rolling his sleeves up and mentally preparing to face Michael. Amy had warned him in no uncertain terms that he was in for it if he didn’t try to work things out. He was out of reasons to run the boy off and he had to face the fact that his daughter’s mind wasn’t going to be changed. He entered the living room and stared hard at the younger man sitting near the fireplace. “Michael,” he said by way of greeting.

“Hello, Mr. Deluca,” he got up to offer his hand to the older man.

Carson shook his hand and waved him back to his seat. “What can I do for you, Michael?” he asked as he took the chair facing the other man.

“I’m here to ask you to hold onto your daughter even if you don’t approve of our relationship,” Michael said straight up. He was fed up with trying to prove to the man he was worthy of Maria and he finally had to resign himself to the fact that he would probably never be good enough in the man’s eyes. But maybe he wasn’t too stubborn to still stay in contact with his daughter even if she was with him.

“You came here... for her,” he said slowly.

“I know you’re not gonna accept me for whatever reason,” Michael shrugged. “I also know Maria loves you though and I don’t wanna be the reason why you two aren’t talking anymore.”

Carson was tempted to let it go at that but he caught his wife watching from the doorway and he cleared his throat when he caught the pointed look she shot at him. “Um, look, Michael... I think there’s somethin’ I need to explain to you,” he said slowly.

Michael studied the man, trying to decide if this was a good sign or not.

“A father’s love for his child isn’t somethin’ that can really be explained... it’s somethin’ you’ll only understand when you hold your newborn baby in your arms for the first time. You’ll know what I’m talkin’ about when it happens to you, Michael.” He ran his right hand through his hair. “You just know that you’ll do anything you can to protect that child, to make sure he or she is taken care of, and that no one hurts them. In some ways it’s unrealistic and I know that. It’s different with a daughter. You want her to marry a man that’ll take care of her – and yeah, I know how outdated that sounds, but it doesn’t stop you from wantin’ that for her. And no guy will ever be good enough for her no matter who he is.” He sighed. “I’m not a man who cares to admit when he’s wrong, but I don’t wanna lose my daughter over this. I judged you unfairly and I know I’m in this position now because I’ve been too stubborn to really listen to what she’s had to say. I should’ve at least given you the opportunity to talk without going on the attack and I apologize for that.”

Michael swallowed hard, shocked by the sudden change in the man in front of him. What had happened since last night? He glanced at the woman in the doorframe and was pretty sure that she had a lot to do with it. He finally nodded. “Thanks...” he ran his hands through his hair. “I know that this wasn’t just about money,” Michael admitted, smirking a little. “I’m not stupid. I think you already checked every existing file and report in existence on me by now.”

Carson shifted uncomfortably. “Well, it pays to have access to certain things.”

“Found something you didn’t know already?”

“I will admit that learning of your business plans and that your finances are stable eased my mind. I don’t apologize for that. Perhaps I could’ve gone about it differently, but... I didn’t.” He nodded to himself. “And you’re right, it’s not just about how much money you make – although I do feel it’s important. There’s also the fact that your childhood was less than ideal. I have a fair idea of what you were dealing with and as a father yes, there is a concern that somewhere down the line my daughter could be dealing with the same thing. Maybe that’s not the case, maybe that cruelty you faced is well and truly in your past, I don’t know. What I do know is that if you were ever to raise a hand to her,” his eyes turned hard as he stared at Michael, “it would be the last thing you ever did.”

The younger man’s mouth opened and closed several times, unable to speak. The man’s words hurt, but he had to admit that there were reasons... He had studied the statistics of people like him and they weren’t promising. “I could never do that,” he shook his head. “I know what it means to not be wanted and to be....” he swallowed, “abused, and I would never put someone, not Maria or my children or anyone else through that.”

Carson got up and walked over to one of the windows to look outside, his thoughts running over everything he had learned about the boy. “Alright,” he said, resigning himself to the fact that he wasn’t getting rid of Michael. “Let’s talk about your plans for my daughter.” He turned around to face the younger man, pinning him with his piercing gaze. “I assume you have a plan?”

“I have plans,” Michael started. “Your daughter’s very stubborn though and I’m pretty sure she has her own plans. There’s a good university nearby. It’s not too far to drive and they also offer online classes. You already know about my own business plans I guess.”

“Um-hmm,” he said, his tone non-committal. “I’m familiar with my daughter’s stubbornness and I can tell you she comes by that honestly. Her mother is the most stubborn woman I’ve ever known.” He paused as he sat down once more. “What about your other plans? You’ve mentioned my daughter and children in the same sentence so I’d imagine you’re thinking far into the future. Have you considered marriage anywhere in there?”

Michael swallowed. Hell, of course he had to ask that question NOW. “Of course,” he answered honestly.

Carson could see the nervousness enter the boy’s expression and he crossed his arms over his chest as he stared at him. “And?”

“And pretty soon,” Michael told him, preparing for the upcoming storm. Damn, and it had all gone so well until now.

Why was he hedging his answers? The man suddenly realized why and he leaned forward, forearms braced on his knees as he studied Michael’s expression. “You intend to ask her right away,” he guessed.

The younger man scratched his eyebrow. “Actually she asked me.”

“What?”

“Last night, she asked me last night.” Now it was out.

He snorted. “And of course you jumped on that and agreed. Do you have any idea what it takes to make a marriage work, Michael? You’re 21 years old, you’re just starting out with plans for a business that you hope will make it, and Maria’s just come back into your life. What makes you think a marriage will survive?”

“First off, I did not jump on it and agree,” Michael started. “And I think I’m old enough to know that a marriage isn’t all fun and games.”

“You said no?”

“I said not yet,” he ran his hand through his hair. “I wasn’t really ready to deal with that after dinner last night.”

Carson couldn’t help the smirk that settled on his features as he leaned back in his chair. “You said ‘not yet’,” he said with a disbelieving chuckle. “You’re an idiot!”

“Carson!” Amy chastised.

He shook his head and waved her off. “’Not yet’ might as well have been a straight up ‘no’, boy. Don’t you know anything about my daughter?”

“I know her and she knows me well enough to know I won’t agree to something I’m not completely comfortable with.”

“Did you at least explain yourself?”

Michael frowned. “Of course I did. I’m not an asshole.”

“And did she hear what you were sayin’?”

“We fought, okay?” Michael said, offended. “Is that what you wanna hear? She spent the night with her friends instead of me.”

“If you fought and she went back to her friends then she was hurt, so no, that’s not what I wanted to hear. What do you intend to do about it?” Maria wasn’t going to let him off of the hook that easily, he thought.

“I’m gonna talk to her,” Michael answered simply.

“After you turned her down?” He held a hand up when the boy started to protest. “You may not think you turned her down, but she thinks you did.”

“She’ll listen to me,” he said, convinced. “And I didn’t turn her down.”

“And you think you can make a marriage work?”

Michael nodded silently.

Carson was amused. “I hope you know what kind of battle you’re in for.” He shook his head. “You said your big plan is to talk to her... what’re you gonna do? Turn the tables and ask her to marry you?”

Michael leaned backwards to pull something out of his pants pocket. He handed a small velvet box to Carson.

Carson slowly lifted the lid up and stared at the engagement ring inside. It was a simple ring, but he had to admit it wasn’t bad. White gold with a princess cut diamond set in the solitaire mounting. He lifted it out of the box and held it up to the light, sizing it up. “She’ll like it,” he said, knowing it was true. He carefully placed it back inside and closed the lid before handing it back to Michael. “It’s a good choice.”

“I wasn’t the one who picked it out,” the younger man admitted.

Carson frowned. “You let someone else pick the ring out?”

Michael stared down at the little box in his large hands. “It’s the only thing I have from my real parents,” he said quietly.

That immediately had Carson’s attention. “You know who your real parents are?”

He nodded, swallowing,

“But... I don’t understand. Where are your parents?”

Michael glanced up to look at Carson. “They died.”

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that. I had just assumed you had always been with... Anyway, I’m sorry.”

“I was always with Hank,” Michael said. “My dad died in a car accident shortly after I was born.”

Carson shifted uncomfortably. He wasn’t sure what to say in response to that. “What about your mother?”

“She was very sick at the time. They took me away from her because she wasn’t able to care for a baby at the time. She died just a few weeks later.”

Hell, the kid had been dealt one shitty hand after the other, Carson thought. “That’s rough. I know they say life’s not fair, but...” He mentally shook himself when he realized he was talking himself into a corner.

“She’ll love the ring, Michael,” Amy said softly.

Carson nodded, reaching up and taking his wife’s hand when she stepped in and saved him from making a fool of himself.

Michael nodded and forced a small smile when he put the ring back in his pocket. “First I have to get her to talk to me.”

“Then I wouldn’t let it wait long, boy. The longer you wait to talk to her the worse it’s gonna be.”

“Yeah, I’d better go.” He got up from where he was sitting as he glanced uncertainly at Amy and Carson. Where would they go from here?

“What’s on your mind, Michael?” Amy asked, seeing his hesitation.

“Just...” he shrugged, “wondering how to go on from here.”

She wasn’t sure what he was referring to. “With Maria?”

He shook his head. “No, no, I’m pretty sure about what I want with your daughter. It’s more like, what will her family do?” He glanced back and forth between Carson and Amy. “I know I’m not the son-in-aw you want.”

Carson cleared his throat when his wife squeezed his hand in warning. “Michael, do you remember what I was sayin’ earlier about no one being good enough for Maria?”

“Yeah.”

“You probably think that Mark made it past that particular rule, but the only thing that made him more suitable was his financial status.” God, it actually sounded bad when said aloud, he realized. “It’s been a difficult thing to come to terms with but no one’s ever gonna make her as happy as you do, so I suppose if you can convince her to marry you,” he gritted his teeth, “I’ll accept her decision.”

Michael nodded. Well, he hadn’t said he would accept him and it was doubtful he would ever say it, but this was a start.

“Make her happy, Michael,” he said as he stood and offered his hand to the younger man. “If you don’t make her happy then you and I are gonna have problems.”

Michael couldn’t hide the small smirk as he took the offered hand. “I’ll do my best.”

Carson nodded. “If she says yes...” he bit his lip, knowing he probably had no right to ask his next question. “We’d like to be invited to the wedding.”

“Of course. I think it’d be cool to surprise her… ya know? Since if she says yes, the wedding will be the day after tomorrow.”

The older man’s eyes widened in surprise. “Excuse me? You can’t possibly expect to marry my daughter at the courthouse. At the very least she deserves a proper wedding.”

“It won’t be at a courthouse,” Michael denied.

“You can’t put a wedding together that quickly unless you’re getting married at the courthouse or in Vegas,” he denied.

“The lodge has a wedding chapel. Maybe you’ve heard of it. It’s pretty famous around here. There’re big ceremonies, live bands, a large garden...”

Carson glanced at Amy, his expression clueless. He hadn’t paid much attention to anything much beyond the hunting and seeing his daughter.

“I think I saw some flyers and placards around the lodge.” She thought back, trying to remember anything else. “But those places are booked months in advance, aren’t they?”

Michael smiled and shrugged. “I pulled a few strings and called in a few favors. It’s an advantage of bein’ employed here. She mentioned once that she’d like a wedding by the lake with the mountains in the distance. The chapel fits her requirements perfectly, so...” he shrugged again.

“I think you’d better go and ask her first,” Cason said.

He cleared his throat and nodded as they walked outside. “Yeah, I should probably do that.”

“Wait,” Amy ran back into the house and came out a minute later, placing a small paper in his hand. “Call us tonight, will you?”

“Call you?” he asked.

“Yeah, we wanna know if we’re preparing for a wedding here.”

“Oh, right. I know how stubborn Maria is and I know it’s not easy to change her mind once she’s made it up, but... she’d regret it if you weren’t there to walk her down the aisle, Mr. DeLuca.” He looked at Amy. “I’ll call you tonight...” he smiled, “after she says yes.”

Amy and Carson watched him leave.

“I can’t believe this,” the man growled.

She turned to look at her husband. “You can’t believe what? That he loves our daughter? That he wants to marry her and make a life with her? That he’s good enough for her? What is it exactly that you don’t believe, Carson?” She was growing tired of this.

He shrugged. “Just can’t believe our daughter’s grown up so quickly that we’re talkin’ about her marriage already.”

“It was bound to happen sooner or later, honey. You do realize if she says yes Michael will be our son-in-law don’t you?”

He looked at her seriously. “Just twist the knife, would ya? He hung his head. “Need some time to get used to that thought.”

“There’s another thought you might wanna get used to.”

“Huh?”

“Maria’s gonna want you to tell her you’ve accepted Michael before she allows you to walk her down the aisle.”

He leaned in the doorframe of the open front door and stared out into the woods. “As long as he treats her right and she loves him I don’t have any reason to not accept him, do I?”

“No, you don’t,” she agreed, sliding her arm around his waist. “And it would make Maria happy, Carson.”

Part 54

Post by Double Trouble »

Earth2Mother: Hmm… how he got the ring is a story we won’t explain, so it’s up to your own imagination. :)

Would be a shame if Maria missed the chance at his proposal, huh? We’re sure he’ll make her listen.

Natalie36: Thanks for reading!

Alien_Friend: No, he’s definitely jumping in with both feet! We’ll find out what she says soon!

Michael knows how important Maria’s family is to her and he knows that she needs them in her life. We might just see more between the two of them.

These girls will always be there for each other.

Yep, another fic. :) We’re gonna miss MSH too. We’ve got about 10 parts left to post… and since CR has two more parts you’re getting an extra long update for this week too!

keepsmiling7: Lol, yeah, we’re thinking things look pretty good for them too. :)

mary mary: A triple wedding… well, Tess is pretty dedicated to her wedding plans and the mere mention of a wedding sends Liz scurrying off to hide somewhere until there’s a topic change, so we’re thinking that’s not too likely.

We’ve still got a couple months and some change worth of posting for MSH. :)

Eva: It’s just the kinda luck Max has had here, lol.

Michael definitely has a plan and we’ll see in this next part if he gets her to listen to him. The ring means a lot to Michael and there’s only one girl he’d ever consider giving it to.

sarammlover: Took him long enough, didn’t it? Lol, hey, we’re not even gonna make ya suffer this time out! We’ll see if Maria forgives Michael in this next part.

begonia9508: Thanks!

Michael definitely knows what he wants and he’s grown into a man who’s ready to confront any obstacle standing in their way… including Carson.

He’s not wasting any time with that wedding, is he? Lol.

Oh, we’ll see in this next part how understanding she’ll be and what she has to say to that proposal.

kismet: Liz does have good advice… sometimes she’s just not that good at following her own advice. But with Max’s help, we think she’ll get better at it.

Carson isn’t an easy man to convince. Michael knows how important Maria’s family is to her and he knows for her to be really happy, that relationship needs to remain intact.

Hmm… expecting a “YES” in this next part, huh? Let’s go find out…

killjoy: We’re glad you’re enjoying Tess here… you can look for more of her in upcoming chapters. These three girls are great friends and they have quite a bit more to do before this fic runs its course.

Part 54

Tess glanced over her shoulder when Kyle wrapped his arms around her from behind. “You can’t rush perfection,” she said as she turned the chicken over once more, making sure it was the same golden color on both sides.

“C’mon, Harding, we’re hungry,” Liz insisted, tapping her fork against her plate.

“Then you should’ve brought your ass in here and given me a hand.”

“Uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but I came in and offered and you told me to get the hell out of your way,” she tossed back.

“Well, you were making the mashed potatoes all wrong.”

“I was stirring the mashed potatoes.” Liz turned to look at Max. “How the fuck do you stir mashed potatoes wrong?”

“No clue,” he muttered around a mouthful of potato chips. He had gotten tired of waiting and started to snack. “I think she’s got brain damage, but that’s just my opinion.”

“Just for that I oughta burn your lunch, Evans.”

“Go ahead, Harding, how would that be any different from any other food you’ve ever given me?”

Liz rolled her eyes and turned to look at Maria, elbowing Max when she realized that the other girl was staring at an open magazine without reading it. “Say somethin’,” she hissed.

“Hey, Maria, you okay?” Max asked obediently.

“Huh?” Maria glanced up, wondering if someone had called her or not.

“Max was just askin’ if you’re okay,” Liz said.

“Yeah,” she answered, very aware that it hadn’t sounded anywhere near convincing.

Tess handed Kyle the platter of fried chicken, smacking his hand when he reached for a piece. “Take it to the table.”

Max watched Maria as she set the magazine aside when Tess and Kyle started putting the food on the table. He wondered if he should mention that Michael had called the night before. “Have you heard anything from – Ow!” he yelled when Liz kicked him and Tess elbowed him in the back of the head.

Maria trolled her eyes at Max, as she glanced over the set table, realizing that she wasn’t the slightest bit hungry.

Kyle snickered, glad he wasn’t the one who had made that mistake. “Hey, Maria, you oughta try the chicken. Tess has this new recipe she made up to make it hot an’ spicy.”

“Yeah, sure,” she said and sat down, already knowing that she wouldn’t be able to eat more than a few bites.

Liz looked at the mashed potatoes when Tess put the dish on the table. “Okay, they don’t look any different than they did when I was stirring them.”

Max reached over to rest his hand on her thigh. “You might as well let it go. She bitches about help in the kitchen and then she chases out anyone who dares to enter her domain.”

“Not me,” Kyle bragged.

Liz rolled her eyes. “Yeah, well, we all know what you do to stay on her good side. Totally not goin’ there.”

Maria watched her friends as the two couples bickered over the food and she felt lonely at this moment. It was ridiculous because she knew she wasn’t, but her heart was telling her differently.

They all glanced up when they heard a car door slam and a few seconds later the sound of footsteps could be heard crossing the porch. They glanced at each other when Maria turned to stare at the door.

“Hey, you wanna get that, Maria?” Max asked, certain it was Michael.

“Um, me? Why?”

Kyle grinned. “’Cause if Guerin knows what’s good for him, he’s standin’ on the other side of that door. And somehow I doubt he’s here to see any of us.”

“Yeah, fine,” Maria got up again. “Wasn’t hungry anyway.”

Tess snorted. “His ass is in sooo much trouble.”

“They just need to talk about stuff,” Liz said.

“Yeah, and he’d better do most of the talkin’. Men can be so stupid sometimes.”

Kyle shook his head. “Stupidity is not somethin’ only the male of the species suffers from.”

“Why don’t you shut up an’ eat, Kyle,” Liz suggested sweetly.

*****

Michael was leaning back against the railing that bordered the porch, arms crossed over his chest, fingers of his right hand drumming against his left arm as he waited for someone to answer the door. He hoped Maria was the one who came to the door because he really wasn’t ready to deal with her friends right now. He was glad that she had found a group of friends who were so protective of her but he didn’t need their interfering or meddling. He just needed to talk to Maria and hope that she was willing to listen to what he had to say.

Maria glanced at her reflection in the mirror right next to the front door. Ungh, her face showed the sleepless night she’d had. She ran her hands through her hair and brushed over the pullover she was wearing to straighten it, before she took a deep breath and opened the door. Both relief and nervousness ran through her veins when she saw him on the opposite side where he leaned against the railing.

Michael cleared his throat nervously when his wish was granted and Maria stood before him. She didn’t move any further than the doorway and his eyes moved over her, taking in her appearance. “Didn’t get much sleep last night either, huh?” he asked quietly.

She shook her head quietly, still feeling embarrassed about asking him to marry her. She should have known he wasn’t ready for that so soon.

He nodded. He hadn’t needed an answer to that question, hadn’t even needed to ask it, but he needed something to get the conversation going. That hadn’t worked all that well though. “I thought maybe we could take a walk.” He hesitated when she just stared at him, waiting for something more. “I need to talk to you, explain about last night.”

She nodded weakly. “Okay, let me just borrow some clothes from Liz and get my jacket.”

He waited on the porch while she went to get ready, walking from one end to the other several times as he went over what he wanted to say to her. He decided not to say anything about his visit to her parents. If everything went the way he wanted... the way he hoped it would go, her parents being there day after tomorrow would be a surprise for her. Now he just had to get her to listen to him. She had agreed to go for a walk with him but if he had pushed her too far away because of his actions the night before she wouldn’t give him a chance to plead his case. He straightened up when the door opened again and he mentally rolled his eyes when Tess stepped out on the porch and pulled the door closed behind her.

“This’s your last chance, Guerin,” she said as she approached him without the slightest bit of hesitation in her steps.

He shook his head at her. “This doesn’t involve you.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. Maria is our friend and that automatically involves us. I don’t know what kinda friends she had when you two were in Roswell, but we’re not gonna just stand by and watch her get hurt.” She glared at him. “You hurt her. Again. Make it right or don’t bother comin’ around to see her again.”

As much as Michael wanted to be mad at her he couldn’t find it in him. She was protecting Maria and how could he fault her for that? “I’ll tell you the same thing I told Evans last night, Harding. This’s between me an’ Maria.”

“Then fix it before you damage it to a point where it can no longer be fixed, you moron.”

They both looked up when the door opened and Maria stepped outside, pausing when she saw the two of them facing each other.

“I was just giving him the facts,” Tess said and shrugged.

Maria almost grinned at her friend’s behavior. “I think I can handle it from here, girl.”

The other girl nodded and slapped Michael on the back, glaring at him to make sure he knew she had meant every word. “We’ll be at the cabin for a while before we go out.”

He waited until Tess and her evil glare retreated into the cabin before he motioned to the woods surrounding the cabin on three sides. “There’s a path around back.” He smiled faintly. “Might give us some privacy in case your friends decide to involve themselves any further.”

“We look out for each other,” she defended them.

He shook his head and glanced at her as they walked around the cabin. “I wasn’t tryin’ to be smart or say anything bad about ‘em, Maria.” He shrugged. “Hell, I’m glad you’ve got friends who’ll stand up for you like that. They’re not shy about makin’ sure people know they’ve got your back and I can appreciate that.”

“I know my friends say what they think. Sometimes it can be nerve racking, but at least they don’t pretend anything.” She shrugged and fell into the same walking rhythm beside him.

He chuckled quietly and reached out to push a low-hanging branch out of the way so she could pass. “Maria, I wanted to talk to you about last night, but would you mind tellin’ me what you’re thinkin’ first? ‘Cause I think you may have taken some of the things I said and did the wrong way.” He held his hands up when she turned to look at him and he could see the rant building up. “Hey, I’m not sayin’ that’s your fault. I should’ve thought a little more before I did anything but I didn’t and I think that made you think some things that just aren’t true. So, please, tell me what you’re thinkin’ about last night and...” he swallowed hard, “and about us, where we stand right now.”

“Where we stand right now,” she mumbled quietly and stared at the ground. “I really can’t tell you... I don’t know what to think about what happened, about how you took off.” She ran her hand through her hair. “I mean, I can understand why you don’t wanna marry me... I really do and yeah, I know it was probably a stupid idea to ask at all. It was too soon. The thing is... instead of talking to me, you ran! We had this problem before... if you’ll remember.”

“Okay, that’s an honest start I guess.” He motioned to a picnic table set back off of the main path and he followed her over to it, swinging one leg over the bench and sitting down across from her. “When I took off last night I wasn’t runnin’, Maria. I told you I needed to clear my head and that’s honest to God what I was doin’. The thought of runnin’ away and lettin’ you go again never entered my mind. It’s just... a lot happened last night and I needed to get my head straight before I could sit down and talk about it with you.” He didn’t know if she could understand the difference, but he hoped she’d at least try. He reached across the table and took one of her hands, squeezing it lightly to get her to look at him. “And I never said I didn’t wanna marry you, girl.” He smiled as he shook his head. “Never once said that. Yeah, you blindsided me with the proposal, but if you’ll recall I said ‘not yet’ not ‘no’.”

“How was I supposed to know you really meant what you said?” She sighed. “In the past you left without a word, I didn’t even have a clue you were planning to leave, so of course I was scared when you left last night.”

That hurt, but what defense did he really have against her words? His past actions spoke loudly and the only way to prove that he had changed was to change those behaviors. “Look, Maria...” he sighed and ran his free hand over his face as he took a moment to think. Her anger he could deal with, but fear was a different subject altogether. “I never meant to scare you. I came back last night and I was ready to talk this thing out, fight it out, whatever it took, but I got back and you were gone.” He smiled slightly. “I guess the difference would be that I knew where you’d go. I called over here to make sure you were safe and ended up getting chewed out by Evans,” he said with a grimace. “I’ve always taken off when I feel like I’m too on edge to be rational, you know that. When I get like that clearin’ my head is the only thing that helps. I thought I told you I’d be back so it didn’t occur to me that you’d think I wouldn’t come back.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I told you I wasn’t thinkin’ clearly,” he said with a sheepish smile.

“Next time you need to clear your head we should try something new. Maybe a slap on the back of your head would help,” she said dryly.

He tried not to smile at her remark and just barely succeeded. “So... does that mean you’ll be around to smack me upside my head?” he asked, unable to contain the smile this time.

She snorted. “Where else would I be now that my father hates me and my friends have already started to google the best apartments around here?”

“Your dad doesn’t hate you, Maria. Maybe you sayin’ what you said last night made him stop and think about things.” Great, he thought, her meddling friends were serious about moving up to his neck of the woods. He bit back a smile. “Okay, so, about last night,” he said as he rubbed her knuckles with his thumb. “Yeah, some of the things your dad said hit a little too close to home. Not about me not bein’ good enough for you and not about me basically goin’ nowhere in life... but when it comes to my past with Hank, that’s a wound that’s still a little bit raw. Me an’ you talked about that in the past so you know what my concerns are there. It’s not somethin’ that can just be brushed aside. Am I afraid of losin’ my temper and hurtin’ you or any kids we have? No. At one time that would’ve been a concern, but...” he shook his head. “How many times back in high school did you provoke me just to prove to me that I’d never hurt you that way? You can push my buttons like no one else and you know that... you knew you were safe with me long before I knew it.”

“Okay, my Dad maybe doesn’t HATE me, but he’s not supporting us and I don’t forgive him for that. He has no reason to hate you or to not accept you. I mean, he didn’t even give you a chance and you never did anything to make him doubt you’re good for me. I mean, like said: You never hurt me, you were never impolite or anything towards him, you’re not a criminal...” Her eyes widened. “You don’t have any criminal records, right? You know my Dad... he’s probably already checked every existing file on you.”

He laughed at her expression. “No, no criminal record that I’ve been keepin’ secret.” He shrugged. “And I hope your dad has checked my records ‘cause all he’s gonna find is stuff that might maybe make him see me a little differently.”

She snorted. “I doubt that wonder will happen.”

“You never know,” he said and shrugged. “Stranger things have happened. Well... probably.”

She leaned in closer so to him. “We’re gonna build our own family.”

“Yeah, about that...” He scratched his head and looked at her.

She looked at him, frowning. “I told you to forget my question, remember? Don’t worry about it,” she waved him off. It still hurt, yeah, but she would just wait and one day – she was pretty sure of it – he would ask her.

“Yeah, but here’s the thing, Maria, I don’t wanna forget about it.” He smiled at her and shook his head. “My reaction last night was all wrong and if I could I’d do it differently.”

“How differently?” she asked slowly.

“Well, I would’ve said yes for one thing. But I’m pretty sure after last night I won’t be getting another proposal, so...” He shifted to reach into his pocket, smiling nervously at her as he placed the tiny velvet box on the table before her. “I thought maybe if I asked...”

She stared at the small box in front of her with wide eyes while her heart was beating a mile a minute. “Are you...?” She swallowed hard.

“Marry me, Maria,” he said simply.

“M... marry you,” she stuttered, her eyes still looked at the box.

Michael wasn’t sure if her shock, surprise, he wasn’t sure which it was but he didn’t know if it was a bad sign or not. He reached for the box and opened it, lifting the ring out. “I love you, Maria. More than anything in this world. I wanna marry you and spend a lifetime lovin’ you.”

“Oh my God,” she whispered when she recognized the ring. She lifted her head and blinked a few times, trying to hold back her tears. “Michael this’s your mom’s ring.”

He nodded and swallowed hard. “I’d be honored if you’d wear it, Maria.” He smiled slowly. “I’m not superstitious or anything but from what I’ve heard about them they were really happy together.”

Maria smiled sadly. “I’m sure they were.” She held her hand out to him. “Wanna put it on?”

He gave her a teasing smile that was tinged with relief. “That a yes?” he asked as he reached for her left hand.

“It’s a HELL YES!”

He laughed and slid the ring on her finger. “It looks like it was made for you.”

She glanced at her hand for several long moments. “It’s beautiful.”

“There’s one thing... I hope you’re not wanting a long engagement ‘cause I was kinda thinkin’ shorter’s better.”

Her heart made a flip flop at his comment. “How short?”

He bit his lip and then cleared his throat. “What if I told you day after tomorrow?” he asked hesitantly. This was either gonna go over really good or really bad.

“W-what?” she asked, shocked. “That's... really short.”

“Too short?”

She chewed on her lip. Was that too short? Her friends were all here right now, so maybe this was the best opportunity they would get. “I’d marry you tonight if you wanted Michael.”

“Yeah?” He grinned. “But the little chapel by the lake with the mountains in the background won’t be available tonight.”

“Are you serious?” she yelped. “I thought it would be booked out for months and months.”

“Well, I pulled some strings and it’s ours for the evening. How do you feel about a wedding in the early evening?”

“I think I love it,” she said, overwhelmed as she stood up to go and sit back in his lap. “Thanks.”

She shrugged. “Well, neither of us have any family to invite, right? And our friends are all here, so what else do we need?”

He could see the slightest hint of sadness in her eyes even though she was trying to hide it. “Yeah. You gonna make me wear a monkey suit?”

“I don’t know. It depends on what I’m wearing I guess.”

“What d’you wanna wear? I just assumed you’d wanna wear a weddin’ dress.”

“I doubt that there’s any available so quickly. And it’s too expensive to buy.”

He shook his head. “I may not be rich but we can afford for you to get a nice dress, baby. I can rent a tux,” he said with a shrug.

“You obviously have no idea HOW much those dresses cost, baby,” she told him, amused.

He shrugged. “It’s a dress, how much could it cost?”

“Well, $1,000 dollars and more for the good ones.”

“Okay, we can swing that,” he said with a grin. “If we could keep it under $1,500 we’ll be doin’ good.” He paused. “That’d buy a nice dress, right?” Jeez, a couple hundred bucks would take care of the tux rental.

“I don’t know, we could save the money for something that lasts longer than a day.”

“The weddin’ might last a day but our marriage is gonna last a lifetime, so I want you to have a nice dress. We can afford it, I promise.”

“Then you’re gonna wear a monkey suit, yep.” She smiled and glanced at the ring again.

He grimaced internally. Ungh, he hated getting all dressed up. But, hell, it was just the one day so he was pretty sure he would survive it. He watched her for a moment, smiling at the look of happiness on her face. “So, is there anything else we need to talk about concernin’ last night?”

“Don’t leave me alone again,” she mumbled and hugged him.

His arms tightened around her and he pressed his forehead against her shoulder. “I won’t,” he promised.

He’s all the family I have now, she thought sadly, but didn’t say it aloud. She didn’t want him to feel responsible. “We’re getting married,” she said instead and the smile broke through her voice. “I’m gonna be Mrs. Guerin.”

Michael knew she was trying to hide how upset she was over her dad’s refusal to accept him as worthy of her and them as a couple and he let it go without mentioning it. He had to find a way to bridge that gap before their wedding. Good grief, he was getting married! He grinned as he leaned back to look at her. “’Bout time you made an honest man of me,” he teased.

“I can’t wait to tell my friends. Tess will be pissed she won’t be the first to get married now.”

He snickered. That's what that little blonde got for getting all up in his face, he thought. “Yeah, that’s a real shame. Oh, well... wanna go tell ‘em now?”

“Yeah, sure,” she got up from his lap. “They’re gonna be shocked.”

He smiled at the anticipation he could hear in her voice. “Let’s go then.”

*****

“Who’s gonna do the dishes with me?” Kyle asked as they were finishing lunch.

“I cooked,” Tess said, crossing her arms over her chest.

Max rolled his eyes at her. “Getting outta this easy, huh, Harding?”

Tess just tossed her hair back over her shoulder and shot a look at Liz.

The brunette was leaning back in her chair studying one of her fingernails when she felt Tess’ stare. She shook her head as she looked at the other girl. “Huh-uh, no way, don’t even look at me.”

Max laughed at her annoyed expression. Doing the dishes in her world meant loading the dishwasher, nothing more. “C’mon, Parker, I’ll give ya a hand. I’ll even wash the dishes so all you have to do is dry and put ‘em up.”

“You just have to dry and put ‘em up,” she mocked and stuck her tongue out at him. “Fine, we’ll do the dishes!”

He grinned as he got to his feet. “C’mon then, let’s get this done.”

“For dinner we’re goin’ out,” she growled.

He leaned over and kissed her. “I think that’s a very good idea.”

“Yeah, because it was my idea,” she teased.

“Hey, Parker, why don’t you two quit talkin’ about it and get it done so we can go out and do somethin’ fun this afternoon,” Kyle said with a grin.

She pushed him off and grabbed some of the plates to take them into the kitchen. “Jerk.”

Kyle just grinned at her. “Hey, Tess was checkin’ out some of the stuff we can do around here and – “

“I found a great place for shoppin’ and it’s only about an hour away,” she said enthusiastically.

“We are not goin’ shoppin’,” Max said, shaking his head.

“Yeah, I was kinda talkin’ about goin’ raftin’ or somethin’,” Kyle muttered.

Liz made a face. “Rafting? It’s cold, I don’t wanna freeze to death.”

“Yeah, see?” Tess chimed in. “Shoppin’ just makes more sense.”

“I don’t know...” Max exchanged a quick glance with Kyle. “I don’t mind a little cold water.”

Liz snorts. “A little cold water. You obviously have no clue HOW cold it is right now.” She shook her head. “Isn’t there a theme park around or somethin’?”

Kyle snorted. “Afraid of a little cold water, Parker?”

“Ooh, I think there was a theme park listed in one of the brochures...” Tess went into the living room to snatch up the stack of brochures from the coffee table. “That could be fun and it wasn’t that far from where I wanna go shoppin’!”

“No shopping if we go to that park,” Max said.

“You are not the boss, Max Evans,” Tess complained.

Kyle nodded. “That’s right, I’m the boss.” He looked at his fiancé as he crossed his arms over his chest. “And we’re not goin’ shoppin’ on vacation.”

Tess’ mouth opened and closed several times but not a word came out.

Liz giggled. “C’mon, Evans, let’s disappear into the kitchen before she starts givin’ him hell.”

“Think that’s a good idea, Parker.” Max grabbed the last of the dishes off of the table and followed her. Kyle was right to put his foot down with Tess, but boy, was he in for a major fit, he thought with a grin.

“I’m not really in the mood for shopping either,” Liz admitted when Tess was out of earshot.

Max snorted. “You’re never in the mood to shop with Tess when she’s in mall-attack mode.” And he didn’t blame her.

“Before we decide what we do we should wait to see how it goes with Maria and Michael,” she said as she hopped up on the counter while Max filled the sink with water.

“Yeah,” he agreed as reached for the first stack of dishes and started to wash them. “I was just agreein’ with Kyle ‘cause I know it drives Tess crazy. Believe me, I’ve been more than enough cold water to last me a lifetime.” He shot a meaningful look at her and then winked to let her know he was just teasing.

“Awww, poor boy,” she touched his shoulder sympathetically. “No more need of cold showers now though.”

“Ungh, TMI,” Kyle grumbled as he came into the kitchen in time to overhear Liz’ comment. “Jeez, you two!” He grabbed a soda from the refrigerator and took a long drink. “Ya know, that woman of mine can be seriously mule-headed when she wants to be. You do know that to avoid shoppin’ on our vacation I’m gonna get roped into some seriously major shoppin’ when we get back, don’t you?” He rolled his eyes when Max just looked at him unsympathetically. “Yeah, I know, you don't care as long as you don’t have to go.”

“You asked her to marry her. What d’you thinks gonna happen when she finally starts with the organization?” Liz shook her head. “She’ll be furious.”

He shook his head at her. “The wedding’s hers to plan and shop for and whatever else… that part of the wedding has nothing’ to do with me,” he denied.

“Yeah,” Max said doubtfully.

“You wish,” Liz added.

They snickered when Tess’ voice floated in from the other room. “Oh, he’ll be involved.”

“Hey, did you not hear me in there? Boss… Me… I’m the boss. I don’t shop for weddings and that’s final.”

“Then you can marry yourself,” Tess yelled.

“See what you started, Liz?” He shook his head and took another long drink of his soda. “Guess I’d better go see if I can soothe the savage shopping beast,” he said and grinned.

“I didn’t start anything,” she yelled after him when he left the room. “I didn’t start anything,” she said again to Max in a calmer tone.

He grinned. “I know.”

“Why’re we friends with them again?” Liz asked, grinning.

He laughed and shrugged. “They probably ask themselves the same thing at times. What ya think he’s gonna have to do to get outta the hole he’s dug for himself this time?”

Liz made a face. “I refuse to think about it.”

“Probably the smartest thing to do.” He nodded at the dishes piling up in the drain. “You gonna dry those or ya just waitin’ for ‘em to air dry?”

“Hmm.... tempting...”

“Uh-huh… I’ll bet.” He paused and shifted to the side when he caught movement outside. “Hey, looks like Maria and Michael made up.” He motioned to the couple as they walked past the window, towards the front of the cabin.

Liz used his slight distraction to dip her finger into the dish water and splash some water into his face.

“Hey, what’re ya...”

She silenced him with a passionate kiss, pulling him towards her by his collar. “What’d ya wanna say?” she asked innocently.

“Nothin’,” he mumbled, forgetting all about the dishes in favor of kissing her.

“How about we go out for dinner all alone tonight?” Liz mumbled.

“I’m good with that... found a nice quiet little place about half an hour from here.” He smiled. “Tess isn’t the only one who’s been browsin’ through those brochures.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and grinned. “I knew there was a reason why I chose you to be my best friend and boyfriend. I just like the way you think.”

“You chose me, huh? You sure ‘bout that?” His eyes gleamed teasingly. “Nah, I think it was the other way around.”

“You two done suckin’ face?” Kyle stood in the doorframe. “Maria and Michael are here,” he pointed over his shoulder. “They ask us to come to the living room.”

“Just for the record,” Max muttered, “I don’t think we ever interrupted them as much as they interrupt us.”

Liz giggled. “Probably not. But come on,” she jumped from the counter, “I wanna know what they have to say.”

He growled under his breath. “Can’t be all that important.” He shook his head when she just rolled her eyes at him and pulled him after her.

Maria glanced up from where she was sitting on the couch next to Michael when the other couple entered the room. She smiled at her best friend widely.

“Okay, what’s goin’ on?” Liz asked.

“Oh my God,” Tess whispered under her breath. She elbowed Kyle when he glanced at her and she nodded towards Maria’s left hand.

Max followed their gazes and he hurried to wrap his arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders and covered her mouth with his hand before she could blurt out the news before Maria got a chance to say it.

Maria couldn’t suppress the big grin on her lips. She lifted her left hand to her friends. “We’re getting married.”

Tess emitted a high-pitched shriek that had Kyle wishing he had been sitting anywhere but right beside her but he wisely kept that thought to himself as she jumped up and grabbed Maria’s hands, pulling her to her feet so she could gush over the ring. Liz glanced at Max uncertainly and she felt herself begin to relax when he nodded and gave her a reassuring smile.

“It’ll be okay,” he whispered. “Just let ‘er know you’re happy for them.” He knew she had her reservations about marriage and she didn’t get all goofy over weddings the way most of the female population did. She was happy for Maria but she wasn’t a gusher like Tess.

She nodded. “Right.”

He stood and offered his hand to Michael when she finally went over to congratulate their friend. “Congratulations, man.”

“Yeah, welcome to the family,” Kyle said, grinning. “We’re a little dysfunctional at times, but the way I look at it that makes us pretty freakin’ normal, so you’re just gonna have to deal with it.”

Michael snorted. “Dysfunctional families are my specialty. Thanks!”

“The ring’s beautiful,” Liz said quietly as she looked at it.

Tess was practically hopping up and down she was so excited. “Oooh, now we have two weddings to plan! This’ll be so fun!”

Kyle shook his head at Michael. “Dude, seriously, she was crazy enough when it was just our weddin’.”

“Oh, Maria, you have to let me help! I’m sure we’ll have what? At least a year and that’s plenty of time…” she trailed off when Maria started shaking her head. “You want a longer engagement?” She smiled and waved dismissively. “That’s alright, it’s just more time for us to plan.” She frowned. “Why are you shaking your head again?”

“We agreed to a short engagement,” Michael told her and wrapped his arm around Maria.

“Okay… so less than a year,” Tess mused. “Well, that’s totally doable.” She nodded to herself. “Yeah, we can still do that. So, what kinda wedding do you want?”

“We’re getting married the day after tomorrow,” Maria blurted out.

“Day after tomorrow?” Tess echoed, gaping at them. “No, you can’t get married in like 48 hours… what is this some backwoods shotgun wedding?” She shook her head at them when they just nodded. “Seriously?”

“Wow, that’s um… that’s fast,” Liz said. “What’re you gonna do? Like a courthouse wedding?”

Personally Max was impressed, but then again he was a big romantic and he made no apologies for it. He wrapped his arms around Liz from behind and pulled her back to lean against his chest. “Your old man take the news okay? ‘Cause if he’s bein’ a jerk about it I’ll walk ya down the aisle.”

“Hey, technically we met her first, so I think if one of us is gonna be walkin’ her down the aisle it should be me,” Kyle insisted.

“It’s nice that you’re both in such a hurry to give her away,” Tess said, shaking her head, “but let’s take one thing at a time.” She turned back to Maria. “Ignore them. Nevermind, you’re familiar with that particular necessity. Anyway, what about your parents?” Surely her parents wouldn’t just not go to the wedding? That would be unreal… it would be cruel!

“I guess I’ll tell them tomorrow,” Maria glanced at Michael briefly and smiled sadly. “But I don’t think they’re gonna be part of the wedding, at least not my dad for sure.”

Michael kissed her temple. “It’ll be okay,” he said quietly.

The other four exchanged glances. They all knew how badly it would hurt Maria if either of her parents refused to show for her wedding.

“Maybe they will, Maria,” Liz said after a couple of minutes. She shrugged when everyone turned to look at her. “What? I can be positive,” she muttered.

“I don’t care,” Maria said. “If my dad doesn’t accept Michael into our family then I don’t want him at my wedding.”

Michael didn’t comment on her statement. She would care no matter how much she denied it and they all knew it.

“Okay, let’s not worry about your dad and how stupid he’s gonna be if he doesn’t do the right thing here,” Max said, switching the conversation away from the unpleasant topic. “How’re you gonna pull a wedding together in 48 hours?”

“I’ve got some people who owe me big,” Michael said with a wink at his girlfriend.

“Yeah, and you guys are all here and you’re the only important people I want to be there for the wedding, so it's perfect,” Maria added.

“So, what, you’ve got the wedding all planned already?” Tess asked.

“No, of course not. I’ll need your help. But at least we already have the location, right?” She glanced at Michael.

He nodded. “Um-hmm, the chapel’s on the lake.” He glanced at Tess. “Mountains in the background,” he said smugly.

Tess’ eyes grew larger as she ran through the room and came back with a flyer only seconds later. “This one?”

Michael barely glanced at the flyer. “Yeah, why?” There was only one chapel on the lake at the resort so he knew it would be the right one.

“How’d you get an appointment so soon?” she asked, shocked. “I called them yesterday and they said they’re booked out for the next 15 months.”

He just shrugged with a grin. “Told ya, I called in a few favors.”

“Think you can call in another favor for US like in a year?” she asked with a grin.

“Thought you wanted a beach wedding?” he asked. He shrugged when she gave him a look. “Hey, I can see what I can do but it’s not the ocean.”

“Well, we don’t have to decide this today, right?” Kyle asked.

“Right, and I think if the wedding is the day after tomorrow we should get started with the organization,” Tess said excitedly.

Liz muttered several choice words under her breath. She loved Tess like a sister, but when it came to organizing anything it was just a matter before everyone around her was being driven crazy.

Kyle slapped Michael on the back. “Hey, organizing a wedding is no place for us guys… let’s talk bachelor party!”

“Um…” Tess cleared her throat. “Kyle, you do remember what we discussed about bachelor parties?”

He grinned. “Look but don’t touch?”

“So, if he gets a bachelor party then Maria gets a bachelorette party,” Liz mused with a grin. This was more like it, she thought with a glance at Max. Her eyes were teasing as she asked, “I suppose there’s gonna be a stripper?”

Max and Kyle both snorted. “That’s a real question?” they asked at the same time.

Maria rolled her eyes. “Great.”

Michael chuckled and pinched her side gently. “You had nothin’ to worry about two years ago and I can promise you… you have nothin’ to worry about now.”

“I’m not worried,” she said and meant it. She knew there was no reason to worry; he had never given her any reason to not trust him when it came to other women.

She shrugged. “Another night we’re gonna spend apart from each other.”

“At the risk of losin’ major guy points here, I really don’t need a bachelor party.”

Kyle groaned. “Aww, what’d ya do to him, Maria?”

“Yeah, c’mon,” Liz pulled her friend aside. “What’s one more night apart from each other? I mean, hey, you’re getting married, so you’re gonna spend the rest of your lives together. Us girls go out and have fun tomorrow night and the boys can do... whatever.”

“Whatever,” Max snorted.

Kyle rolled his eyes and shoved his friend’s shoulder. “Man, you know girls don’t party as hard as we do.”

“Ya think so?” Liz asked with a lifted eyebrow. “We’ll see!”

“Yeah, I’m not sure that’s a challenge we should throw out there… last time we did that we all ended up in jail overnight.” Max grinned and shrugged. “Then again, we did win that challenge.”

“You cheated,” Tess accused.

“Okay, stop that!” Maria said. “Remember, I wanna get married the day after tomorrow, so nobody’s goin’ to jail and nobody’s gonna be sufferin’ from a major hangover.”

“Aww, Maria, you just delivered a major blow to the party,” Kyle complained.

“Oh, boo-hoo,” she told him with an eye roll as she glanced at Michael. “Ya wanna go see Nick and Tony?”

“Yeah, gotta take Tony’s truck back to him and ask him a question.”

She nodded, pretty sure she knew what that question was.

“Why don’t you go and do whatever ya gotta do and us girls will talk about wedding stuff,” Tess suggested.

Max and Kyle exchanged a quick look.

“I don’t wanna hang around and talk about wedding stuff,” Max said.

“Huh-uh, no way,” Kyle agreed. “We’ve got a bachelor party to plan. Michael, why don’t we meet you and your friends over at the lodge after you guys talk and we’ll get down to some serious plannin’?”

Michael glanced at his girlfriend questioningly.

She nodded with a soft smile. “Go, but make sure ya pick me up for a romantic dinner so we can celebrate our engagement before it’s over.”

“You might have to pick me up… you’ve got my truck,” he reminded her.

She nodded. “We’ll meet at the lodge then.”

He smiled and gave her a kiss. “Sounds like a good plan.”

Post by Double Trouble »

kismet: We’re glad that made ya happy. :)

Oh, we’ll see how they get it pulled together… they’ve got a lot of help. ;)

Earth2Mother: Lol, getting nervous about Tess? Well, she can be a little demanding sometimes, lol.

We’ll know about Maria’s stand up person soon. ;)

Eva: *celebration dance* :)

If Carson stays his course and attends the wedding, it will absolutely be the best present she could get.

begonia9508: Lol, they do have their work cut out for them.

Thanks!

mary mary: There is something to be said for this hectic 48-hour schedule, lol.

Alien_Friend: They’re doing very well with the open communication part of their relationship. Michael will do his best to make sure everything goes well.

Maria’s ‘family’ will definitely be there to make sure Michael stays in line, lol. But you’re right, they’re gonna be one big happy family. :)

Oh, we’ll find out what Michael’s friends say here in this next part. We’re pretty fond of Tony too. :)

We’re back in our normal rotation… so, weekly updates for all three fics!

keepsmiling7: Lol, there’s just no satisfying some people… and Tess in the kitchen is one of them.

Moving along…

Natalie36: Thanks for reading!

sarammlover: Thanks! Michael has matured in the time he and Maria have been apart. We’ll see whether or not Carson makes it that far.

killjoy: Well, we can’t really argue that point, lol, so we won’t even attempt it. On the other hand, whitewater rafting would be more fun.

You know Tess… she likes it spicy. ;)

Lol, well, if they made it too easy they wouldn’t be M&M!

Lover of Metallica: Lol, well, they’re not quite so turbulent as they were in Double Trouble. Her parents being at her wedding will definitely be a relief for Maria. You’re right, and if at all possible, Michael will do everything in his power to keep her from going through that kind of pain again. Well, now that Cupid’s Revenge is finished we’re back to posting on our regular rotation… all three fics every Sunday. :)

Part 55

Tony pulled the zipper of his jeans closed and walked barefooted and shirtless into his kitchen to get something to drink. He was still tired at this time of day; even the shower hadn’t helped at all. Damn Guerin and his early morning interruptions. He had been out with Vanessa last night and it had been really late by the time he had gotten back home. Alone, sadly. He respected her wish to take things slow... but damn.

A knock on his front door got his attention and he glanced up from the open refrigerator. There were two possibilities. Either it was Michael to give his truck back... or it was Vanessa, who wanted to take him out for a late lunch. He grinned, knowing which one he would prefer.

Tony closed the refrigerator door again and walked over to the door, not bothering to pull on a shirt. He opened the front door and hid his disappointment when the person in front of him wasn’t long-haired and beautiful. “Leave my truck in one piece?”

“No, I left the bumper over on Main Street,” Michael muttered, shaking his head at the question. “Why do you always ask that question? I’m not the one who borrowed your truck and then got in a fender bender with a dump truck ‘cause I was busy starin’ at a girl. If memory serves that was Nick.” He walked inside when Tony stepped back and motioned for him to enter the apartment. He glanced around, trying not to grin when he saw that his buddy had cleaned up. Looked like he was doing his best to impress Vanessa. “Sheesh, hope you didn’t go to all this trouble for me.”

“No need to impress you.” Tony threw the door shut and walked back into the kitchen. “So, what’d you need my truck for?”

“Needed to go see Maria,” he answered as he followed Tony.

The other man frowned. “Thought she was with you.”

“Well, she was... and then she... wasn’t.”

Tony glanced at his friend doubtfully. “You managed to fuck it up only one day back from the mountain?”

“Fucked it up… and then fixed it up.”

“Okay, good. I don’t wanna deal with a moody Guerin again.”

Michael just rolled his eyes. “So, whatcha doin’ the next couple of days?”

“Enjoying my vacation,” Tony said carefully. It was obvious that Guerin had something in mind and he wasn’t sure if he would like it.

“So... no plans for the day after tomorrow? Say in the evening?”

“Depends...” he said slowly.

Michael ran his right hand through his hair. “I’m getting married and I’d like for you to be my best man.”

“W... what?” Tony gulped and chuckled. “Repeat that, I think I heard you say you’re getting married.”

“You heard right,” he said. “I’m getting married in 48 hours or so.”

“Seriously? I mean, this isn’t a joke, right?”

Michael frowned at him. “Why would I joke about somethin’ like this?”

Tony shrugged. “Well, I’m just shocked. Wasn’t expectin’ somethin’ like that, but...” he shrugged and fisted his friend’s arm. “Congratulations.”

Michael smiled slowly. “So, you’ll do it then?”

“Of course I will.”

“Okay, cool. For a second there I thought you were gonna say no.”

Tony snorted. “C’mon. I feel honored to be your best man, Guerin.”

Michael nodded. “Thanks, man.”

“So, ya gotta explain that.” Tony took a bottle of water out of the refrigerator and tossed it to Michael before taking another bottle for himself. “Marriage... already?”

“It’s marriage...I asked, she said yes... what’s to explain?” He grinned when Tony just rolled his eyes and gestured impatiently. “It’s right for us. I love ‘er and I wanna spend the rest of my life with ‘er.” He shrugged. “I don’t know how else to explain it.”

“And it’s the day after tomorrow... you’re not wastin’ any time, are ya?”

He took a drink of his water. “Why wait when ya know it’s right?”

Tony snorted. “We’re gonna have to come up with a bachelor party pretty quickly then.”

“Yeah, that’s what Max an’ Kyle were sayin’. But I think as best man you’re in charge of that. They wanted to meet up with us over at the lodge to start figurin’ it out.”

Tony grinned. “Great, got nothing to do this afternoon anyway.”

“No plans with Vanessa?”

“Not until after dinner, she wanted to hang out with Courtney.”

He nodded. “Okay, well, I’m free until dinner time and then you guys are on your own.”

“What do her parents say about this?”

“I went to see them this mornin’.” He nodded when Tony’s eyes widened in surprise. “Uh-huh, it was… different. I don’t think her old man’s ever gonna like that she’s with me.” He shrugged carelessly. “She doesn’t know I’ve seen them so keep it to yourself. It’s just… it’s important to her that they be there, ya know?” He sighed. “It’s important to her that her parents accept me. Things are actually pretty cool with her mom, but her dad… he’s a different story. I think we’ve kinda reached an understanding, but… now I’ve gotta figure out a way to smooth things over and get them to our wedding. If they’re not there and at least semi-accepting of me she’s not gonna be happy and that’s just not acceptable.”

“Her Dad made a pretty intimidating impression the other day, so good luck with that.”

“I just hope luck’s gonna be enough,” Michael muttered. “Her dad’s not an easy guy to impress. Not that I care about impressing him,” he added quickly. “If it were about me I wouldn’t bother, but...” he shook his head.

“But it matters to her.”

“Yeah. She won’t admit it ‘cause she doesn’t want me to feel like she’s choosin’ me over her parents, but it matters to her.”

“When’re you gonna talk to the parents again and invite them?”

“Well, I figure Maria’s gonna be shoppin’ this afternoon whether she wants to or not... Tess will see to that without my interference, so that’ll free up my afternoon to go over and see her parents again.” He shrugged when Tony glanced at him. “Well, you guys don’t need my help plannin’ MY bachelor party and if I don’t go see them today there won’t be a party ‘cause this has to be taken care of.”

“Well ya could just call?” Tony suggested.

Michael snorted. “You obviously don’t know her father... you don’t just call Carson DeLuca.”

“We’d better get movin’ then, huh? You’re obviously gonna be short on time today.”

“Yeah, and we’ve still gotta round Nick up too... he’d never forgive us if he missed out on the fun.”

“You’re probably gonna hear an ARE YOU INSANE?! from him first.”

“S’okay, I’m ready for him,” Michael said with a grin.

*****

Nick hurried into the lodge, shrugging out of his jacket as the door closed behind him. He glanced up when the woman standing behind the counter called his name and he started to wave her off when she raised an eyebrow at him.

“What, Jessie?” he asked, exasperated at being held up.

“Where’re you off to in such a hurry?”

“Gotta save Guerin from makin’ a huge mistake.”

She smirked at him. “What mistake would that be?”

“Attaching a ball and chain to his nuts. Now do you mind?” he huffed as he rushed back to the corner he and the guys usually staked a claim on when they were hanging out. He rolled his eyes when he saw that they were there and they had company. Kyle and Max had joined them and they were all laughing and having a good time… without him.

He grabbed a chair from a nearby table and unceremoniously shoved it in between Michael and Tony. “Hey, I got here as fast as I could,” he said breathlessly and threw himself into the chair. “Now, what’s with this marriage bullshit?” he demanded.

Tony grinned and started to explain, “Marriage is when two people – “

Nick shoved Tony and shot a glare at him. “Look, don’t give me any shit. I know what marriage is. What I wanna know is what the fuck he’s thinkin’.” He turned back to Michael, annoyed when he saw the smirk on his friend’s face. “I know you guys have met up again and you’re like all… totally into each other or whatever, but, dude, seriously, now you’re talkin’ about takin’ vows and committing for the rest of your life.” He reached out to place his hand on Michael’s shoulder. “Look, I know you’re like all happy about this an’ shit, but if you’re with her like that, man, you can’t be with anyone else… like… like… EVER!”

Michael just grinned. “I know.”

“You know,” Nick said slowly. “Okay,” he looked at Tony. “You’ve gotta talk to him, make him understand what he’s doin’.”

“Nicky, my boy, I think he knows exactly what he’s doin’,” Tony said.

“And you all agree to this?” The young man’s gaze swept over all the guys at the table. “None of you thinks this is... I don’t know... TOO FAST?”

Kyle just grinned. “Already engaged here, man. I’m the wrong one to ask.”

Max laughed. “You’re not gonna get an agreement outta me either.”

“Can’t believe it,” Nick muttered to himself. “They have all time in the world.”

“Yeah, so why waste it?” Michael agreed and nudged Nick with his shoulder. “Quit actin’ like it’s the end of the world. No one’s tryin’ to marry you off.”

“Yeah, but marriage is the beginning of the end, man. You’re not gonna be any fun anymore.”

“What?” Michael snorted. “What the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“Uh-huh. No more parties, no more flirting. You’re gonna be either up on the mountain or home with her.”

“Look, Nick, getting married doesn’t mean I’m gonna suddenly shrivel up an’ die. Trust me on this, Maria isn’t gonna be expectin’ me to stop hangin’ out with my friends just ‘cause we’re getting married. Yeah, it probably won’t be as often and flirtin’ is out the window unless it’s with her, but hell... that just means you’ve got a better chance of scorin’ now.”

“Hmm, I hadn’t looked at it from that angle yet.”

“See? And hell, with Tony hookin’ up with Vanessa... even more of an available selection now.”

“Did I hear my name?” a woman asked as she approached them.

“Vanessa,” Nick said, placing his hand on Tony’s shoulder and shoving himself to his feet. “Maybe you can talk some sense into Guerin.”

She frowned and leaned to the side to glance at the others. “What’s wrong with him?”

“He’s getting married! Day after tomorrow! Now, tell me that isn’t too fast.”

Her eyes shot open wide and she looked at the man in question. “Seriously?”

Michael nodded, wondering which side she was going to take. He knew once Nick calmed down and saw that it was what he wanted the guy would accept it and deal with it.

“Wow,” she dropped down in Tony’s lap and wrapped an arm around him to rest it on the back of the chair.

Nick rolled his eyes and threw himself back into his chair. “Wow,” he muttered. “You realize you were my last shot of makin’ him see reason, right?” He shook his head at her before turning back to Michael. “Alright, be straight with me... this’s what you really want?”

“Of course it’s what he really wants,” Vanessa interrupted.

“You’re a chick,” he snarked without looking at her. “Of course you think it’s what he wants.”

Michael met Nick’s gaze evenly. “Yeah, Nick, it’s what I want.”

Nick sighed in defeat. “Alright, I give up. If you wanna do this I’m not gonna try to stop you. Let’s talk bachelor party,” he said, switching gears. “There’s gonna be a stripper, right? There has to be a stripper! Please don’t take that away from me!”

“A stripper?” Vanessa glanced at Tony, amused.

“Hey, it’s like a bachelor party rule,” he said, holding his hands up. “I didn’t make it up an’ besides... it’d just break Nick’s heart if there wasn’t a stripper. An’ we’ve gotta give him somethin’. He’s the only bachelor left in our ranks.” He nodded at Nick. “Just look at him... it’s just sad.”

“We don’t know if we’re gonna have one, though,” Max considered. “Not easy to plan stuff like this in such a short amount of time.”

“Don’t know...” Nick shook his head. “No, no, no, there has to be a stripper.” He looked between Tony and Michael. “Look, guys, the stripper is non-negotiable. Just ‘cause the four of you are ready to be tied to the old ball an’ chain doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have any fun!”

Vanessa smacked him on the back of his neck as she got up again. “Shut up.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Hey! You don’t care if there’s a stripper there, right?”

“As long as it makes you shut up,” she shrugged.

“See? Vanessa doesn’t care if there’s a stripper. C’mon, you guys,” he begged. “We can’t have a bachelor party without a stripper.”

Michael glanced at his watch. “Well, stripper or not, I’ll leave the decision to you, ‘cause I’ve gotta go.”

“What? But I just got here,” Nick complained. “See, it’s already happening.”

“Nothing’s happening,” Michael assured him.

Nick rolled his eyes. “You’re ditchin’ us for your wife,” he muttered. “Oh, hey, you know what would be cool? Two strippers... I saw an ad a while back for these two strippers... tall, blonde, and twins!”

Michael rolled his eyes and he glanced at Tony. “Ya gotta take control of things.” Then he turned to Max and Kyle. “And you guys distract Maria today as long as necessary, okay?”

“Gotcha, Chief,” Kyle said with a thumbs-up.

Max nodded. “We’ve got it covered.”

Tony shook his head at Nick. “No twin strippers. I can get away with one, but two’s pushin’ it.”

“He’s right about that,” Vanessa said warningly and leaned down to steal a quick kiss from her new boyfriend’s lips.

“Hey, I don’t know what time I’m gonna be free tonight,” he said, wrapping his hand around her neck to hold her close.

“It’s okay. Guess Michael’s wedding has to come first, huh?”

“Well, he did spring it on us with no warnin’,” he said with a grin. “And I think Nick needs some attention... he’s feelin’ a little neglected right now.”

“Poor Nicky,” she said with no sympathy.

He chuckled when Nick turned and shot an annoyed look at Vanessa. “We’ll just have to find Nick a girlfriend.”

“You will do no such thing,” Nick growled.

Vanessa glanced at her cell when it started to buzz. Courtney, she thought. She could be a potential girlfriend... one day, when she was over Michael and Nick had grown up. “Gotta answer this.”

“Okay, now that YOUR ball an’ chain’s gone,” he said with a look at Tony, “maybe we can get down to some serious plannin’.”

“Shut up and get a phone book.”

Vanessa walked away from the group in a hurry before her friend could hang up. “Hello?” she greeted when she found a quiet place.

“Hey, I wanted to call and let you know I’m on my way. I’m runnin’ a few minutes behind,” Courtney apologized.

“Hey, why don’t we go to town instead of the lodge?” Vanessa suggested.

“Sure, that sounds good.” She snorted. “Since I do spend most of my time at the lodge anyway.” She paused. “Any reason why we’re gonna go into town?”

“Tony’s here with some guys and I don’t wanna be distracted.”

“Uh-huh,” Courtney said, not buying it. Okay, yes, Vanessa could be a little distracted when Tony was around, but she had a feeling that wasn’t it. “Michael’s there, huh?”

“No, he left already.”

So he had been there but Vanessa didn’t want to talk about it. “Alright, ya wanna just meet somewhere then?”

“Yeah, we could go to that nice little café near the lake.”

“Cool, it’ll take me about 15 minutes to get there.”

“Alright, I’ll see ya soon then.”

Tony glanced up when Vanessa came up behind him and put her hands on his shoulders, squeezing lightly to get his attention. “What’s up?”

“Gotta go meet Courtney in town.”

“She doin’ okay?” he asked quietly. He knew she and Courtney were really good friends and she wanted to be there for the other girl while she was going through this rough patch.

“Yeah for now. Not sure how she’s gonna react to the latest news.”

“You gonna tell ‘er?”

“She’d better hear it from me than from someone else. You know this’ll be THE news around here in no time.”

“Yeah, that’s true. Guerin getting hitched after 10 days in the mountains,” he snickered.

She shrugged. “I’m not even really surprised, ya know?”

“Yeah, well, why do I think you knew more about his history with Maria than we did?”

She smiled secretly.

“Uh-huh, you knew.” He took one of her hands and tugged her closer so he could kiss her. “I’ll call ya if it isn’t too late tonight.”

“Okay, but ya know it’s never too late.”

“Never, huh?” he asked with a grin.

“Hell, say goodbye and let her go,” Nick muttered and rolled his eyes.

Vanessa laughed and kissed Tony once more before straightening up and smacking the back of Nick’s head. “Keep it up, Nicky, and I’m gonna make it my goal in life to find you a girlfriend,” she warned.

“Get the hell outta here, Morgan,” he said, but grinned.

“I’m gone,” she said. She caught Tony’s eye and lifted her hand up. ‘Call me tonight,’ she mouthed silently.

He nodded with a wink, which made Vanessa’s heart do a little flip flop. How had she been able to stay away from him for so long?

“Oh, great,” Nick muttered, “we just got rid of one chick.”

“Huh?” Kyle and Max glanced up from their talk about the plans for the party.

“Your girlfriends,” the guide muttered and pointed to the other end of the lodge. “And the holy bride.”

Kyle grinned when Tess spotted him and grabbed Maria’s hand to drag her along behind her. Maria was quick to grab Liz’s hand and the three of them made their way over to the guys’ table.

“Why’re you draggin’ me around?” Liz asked, frowning as she tried to figure out what was going on. She had been minding her own business and looking around for Max when she had been grabbed and dragged.

Max pulled her down to his lap as soon as they reached their table. “Hey. You look like you’ve spent an exhausting afternoon with Tess,” he teased.

“You have no idea,” she muttered, running her fingers over his goatee. She couldn’t explain her fascination with it and she had never cared for facial hair on guys but on him it was different. Maybe it was the way it tickled when he kissed her or the way it rasped against her skin when they were making love... she flushed hotly and ran her thumb over his bottom lip. Making love, she mused, not having sex. There really was a difference.

“But maybe somethin’ else happened? Somethin’ good,” he said as he studied her. “You look excited about... somethin’.”

She looked into his eyes and smiled. “Yeah, you could say that.” But she didn’t want to share her epiphany with everyone else sitting around them. She shifted to pull her iPhone out and she ran through several applications before she found the one she was looking for. “I was checkin’ out apartments around here while we were shoppin’ and I found one I thought maybe we could go look at.” She bit her bottom lip as the pictures loaded and she handed it to him.

He grinned when he took the cell from her. “Makin’ plans, huh?”

“Keeping options open,” she said.

He glanced at the pic and nodded. “Looks good. When ya wanna go over there?”

“We could go this afternoon if you can get away for a couple of hours. I know tomorrow’s gonna be pretty busy and you guys don’t really have to do anything until tonight, right? I mean the guys can pick out a stripper or whatever without your help.”

“Uh-huh,” he glanced to the side to make sure everyone, especially the bride, was distracted. “Michael asked us to distract Maria until dinner.”

“Oh, well... maybe the agent would be willin’ to show the place a little later in the day. I could call her back,” she said, not realizing she had just admitted that she’d already called the agent to check on the apartment.

Max chuckled. “Knew you’d already made a call.”

She opened her mouth to protest but paused to go over what she had just said. “Oh. Well, how long do you really think it’s gonna be on the market?”

“Probably not all too long.”

“So... if she’s willin’ to show it later you wanna go check it out?” she asked.

“Sure,” he leaned in to kiss her. “I know ya wanna stay close to Maria.”

“You promise you wouldn’t mind movin’ up here?”

“Promise,” he nodded.

“Okay.” She settled back in his arms, happily scrolling through the pictures the agent had sent her for the apartment.

Part 56

Post by Double Trouble »

begonia9508: Poor Nick… guy’s still got some growing up to do.

keepsmiling7: Love that, huh? Maybe we should follow them over to that apartment, take a look at it with them.

Sounds like the kinda trouble Nick’s trying to get into, lol.

Earth2Mother: Lol, don’t tell him, he might get impatient then. ;)

mary mary: The wedding is still a few parts off, but it’s coming.

Alien_Friend: Just don’t tell Nicky that… he’d run.

This gang is very supportive of their friends… even Nick as you’ll soon see.  He might mumble and grumble, but as long as his friend’s happy, he’s happy.

We’ll see how Carson does.

Glad you’re enjoying Max and Liz here… why don’t we follow them and take a look at that apartment.

That is a lot to take in for Courtney… and in such a short time! But, she also has great friends and her best friend will be there for her.

sarammlover: Lol, Liz has definitely left that behind. Things are looking bright for these two. Michael is doing his best to make it happen. Shh… you’re gonna make Nick run!

Rodney: Lol… yeah, guys do seem to like that terminology. ;)

Yes, that’s what Nick’s been telling us. He’s very insistent about that stripper.

Eva: These boys do know how to make us laugh, don’t they?

True, there is a difference between living together as friends and as lovers. Liz is wasting no time in working to keep them all together though.

Part 56

Kyle glanced at Max while Tess went on and on about the cutest outfits at the last store they had been in. “You guys are gonna go look at an apartment?” he asked quietly.

The other man nodded silently.

Tess cleared her throat. “Kyle, I’m talking about somethin’ very important here.”

“Bridesmaid dresses, yeah, very interesting, babe.”

“This’s very important and you might as well get used to it because for our wedding you’re gonna be involved in these things,” she threatened.

Kyle frowned and gently pushed her from his lap so he could turn to Liz and Max. “So where is it?”

“Kyle Valenti,” she huffed indignantly.

He ignored his girlfriend and looked at the other couple questioningly.

Max nudged Liz. “Hey, Kyle wants to know where the apartment is.”

Liz rattled off the address. “I don’t know where it is exactly, but the agent said it’s not far from the lake. It’s a newer building but the apartment has a large floorplan.”

“That’s not far from where I live,” Nick said, recognizing the address. “It’s a good neighborhood and most everything’s within walkin’ distance.”

That finally got Tess’ attention as well. “Is there enough room for all of us?”

“You wanna live together?” Max asked, glancing at Liz. Was that something she’d even be interested in?

“Well, the agent said it’s a new complex, so there might be more empty apartments.”

“Yeah, you don’t wanna live with the new couple, babe,” Kyle said with a grin. “They’re in that annoying ‘new couple’ stage. Besides, you’re gonna want lots of room to spread out all the wedding stuff when you get down to really getting started with the organizing and stuff.”

“Awww, it’d be so cool if you guys lived here,” Maria said, touched by her friends’ way of thinking.

“Well, we can’t just have you runnin’ off to the wilds of Washington state all alone,” Tess scoffed. “Besides, the area’s kinda growin’ on me.” She paused for a beat before throwing her arms around her friend. “And we’d miss you too much with that many miles between us.”

Maria smiled and hugged her back tightly. “I don’t wanna be separated from you either.” She knew she wouldn’t change her decision of moving up here no matter what her friends did but it would really, really hurt to be without them.

Liz snorted. “Yeah, who would settle arguments between me an’ Tess on movie night? Or keep her from drivin’ me totally insane when we go shoppin’?”

“You?” Tess complained. “We need Maria to mediate when we go shopping because you have no sense of style or fashion. Ungh, and we won’t even talk about your taste in movies!”

“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with my style or the movies I watch.” She turned to look at Max. “Tell ‘er.”

“Yeah, I’m pretty fond of her style and I have no complaints about her movie choices.”

“Well, of course he’s gonna agree with you,” Tess grumbled. “He knows better than to piss you off.”

“Stop bickering, you two,” Maria demanded. “I like both of your styles, got it? Where the hell is Michael?”

Max and Kyle exchanged a look but before either of them could say anything Tony spoke up. “Said somethin’ ‘bout talkin’ to the boss this afternoon... needin’ to take some extended time off or somethin’.” He silently congratulated himself on his quick thinking. He knew Michael had already cleared the time off, but as far as he knew Maria wasn’t aware of it yet.

She frowned. “I thought he already talked to his boss.” She shrugged. “Must’ve misunderstood him.”

Nick shrugged. “Maybe he had to go in to go over his schedule... Boss knows we won’t work with just anyone.”

“Did he say when he’ll be back?”

“By the time he gets back the three of you will probably be on your way to another store,” Kyle said. “Unless you’ve already gone through the best that Mount Rainier has to offer.”

“We found really nice bridesmaid dresses, but what about the dress for the bride?” Liz wondered aloud and glanced at Tess.

“Nice?” Tess scoffed. “They were better than nice, Parker. Don’t worry, Maria, we’ll find something wonderful.”

Maria nodded and forced a smile. “Yeah, I know.” She had always imagined her mom would be involved when it came time for her to need a wedding dress.

Max glanced at Liz when she nudged him and motioned to Maria. “Anyone want somethin’ to drink?” he asked in an attempt to redirect their friend’s thoughts.

Liz got up and walked over to the blonde. “Maria and I will take a hot chocolate,” she said and nudged the other girl to take half of her seat.

It was slow in the restaurant so he stood to go place their order. He looked at Tess as he stood. “What about you, Harding?”

“Coffee, black,” she answered.

“One coffee and two hot chocolates comin’ up.” He shook his head when Kyle opened his mouth. “I’m not a waiter, Valenti. You want somethin’ to drink, get your ass up and get it yourself.”

“Sucker,” the other guy muttered and got up. “Hey, distract Maria from thoughts of her family, will ya?” he mumbled to his girlfriend before following Max.

Tess rolled her eyes at her boyfriend’s back. Sometimes he just thought he was so smart. “Have you guys already made plans for the bachelor party?” she asked Tony and Nick.

“You’re chicks,” Nick pointed out. “We can’t tell you what’s gonna happen! It’s for men only!”

“It’s for men only,” she mocked and stuck her tongue out. “You are aware that we’ll find out if there’s anything... perverse goin’ on, aren’t you?”

“Perverse?” he asked, affronted. “Seriously? What the hell do you really think we’re gonna get up to?”

“Ya never know.”

“Kyle and Max wouldn’t do anything perverted,” Liz told her.

“Michael neither,” Maria added with certainty.

“What is with everyone today?” Nick complained. “I get picked on ‘cause I’m single and now you guys think I’m some kinda pervert.”

“Well, that idea about the twin strippers has a certain tendency ya know...” Max said as he came back with the drinks.

“Okay, ya know what? I wasn’t plannin’ a three-way with ‘em or anything... I just thought it’d be more entertaining.” He slouched down and crossed his arms over his chest. “Jeez, you’d think you guys had never seen a chick take her clothes off to music.”

“Hello, we’re from California, ya know?” Kyle said.

“Yeah,” Max nodded. “There’re plenty of girls who’re willin’ to take their clothes off at every party.”

“Well, you guys are all,” he held his hands up and made quotes with his fingers, “coupled up and it’s suckin’ the fun out of you. I’ve still got my vote for the twins.”

Tony just shook his head. “Vanessa would kill me.”

“She doesn’t even have to know,” Nick suggested.

He snorted. “She doesn’t even have to know,” he said mockingly.

*****

Vanessa stopped her car in the parking lot next to the café she and Courtney had agreed to meet. She smiled when she saw her friend already waiting at the entry. She saw the other girl hopping from one foot to the other because she was cold. The afternoons had already started to cool off and it wouldn’t be too much longer before the cold was there to stay for a while.

She turned around to grab her bag from the back seat and the blinking of her cell caught her attention, telling her there was an unread message. She opened the phone and smiled when she saw that Tony had texted, telling her to drive safe. He could be so sweet when he wanted to be.

“Alright,” she mumbled to herself and shoved the cell back into her bag as she opened the door to climb out. A shiver ran over her back when the cold wind brushed against her neck. Ungh, she should be used to the weather, but somehow it was different down here in her street clothes than up there on the mountain with all of her professional gear.

“What took you so long?” Courtney called from the other side of the street. “I’m freezing my ass off out here.”

“Hey, I’m here,” Vanessa said and she made it across the street quickly to hug her friend. “Hi, c’mon, let’s get inside.” She held the door open for both of them.

“I don’t know how you guides can stand that cold up on the mountain all the time,” Courtney said and walked over to the little table in the corner where they had a great view of the lake.

“It’s all about the right clothes,” Vanessa told her and shrugged out of her jacket before taking a seat.

“I disagree,” Courtney said, shaking her head. “It rains more than it snows down here, but damn when it starts getting cold that wind cuts right through you.”

They both ordered a hot chocolate when the waitress arrived. “I’ll have a slice of your special cake of the day as well,” Vanessa added.

Courtney lifted an eyebrow. “You must be really happy. You never eat cake!”

The other girl shrugged with a grin. “Maybe.”

“Just ‘maybe’? There’s more behind that grin than that. Tony must be makin’ you very happy, girl.”

Vanessa didn’t want to brag about her newly discovered feelings for the other guide, especially not in front of Courtney after the last couple of days. “I think it can become something serious.”

She smiled. “That’s great. I’m happy for you. Really, Vanessa,” she assured her friend. “Yeah, my love life sucks right now, but it’ll get better... someday.”

“Thanks. I really wanna try something with him, he seems to be the right man for me, ya know?”

Courtney snorted. “Yeah? And how much have you ‘tried’ with him?”

“We’ve just kissed, girl.”

“Well, it’s a start,” she said with a grin.

“He’s a great kisser.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet.” She snickered. “So, what’s Mr. Perfect doin’ tonight while you’re out?”

Ungh, and there it was. The uncomfortable topic she was trying to avoid, but also knowing she had to get it out. “He’s hanging out with the boys.”

“Guys night, huh?” She shook her head and laughed. “They could get up to anything.”

“Yeah, never trust a guy, right?”

“So, are they doin’ anything or just hangin’ out at Nick’s place playin’ video games and drinking beer all night?” She didn’t understand how they could just hang out and play games for hours on end.

Vanessa nodded when the waitress brought their drinks and waited until the other woman had left again. “Alright, there’s something I need to tell you, Court.”

“Why does that make me nervous? That’s the same tone you had when you told me that Michael was on the mountain with his ex and things between them weren’t exactly platonic.”

Her friend smiled sadly. “It’s about Michael again.”

“Of course it is. Well, just hit me with it... I can’t imagine how much worse it could be.”

“Tony and the others are hanging out tonight because they’re planning a bachelor party...” she started.

“Okay,” she said slowly. “Who’s getting mar...” she shook her head when Vanessa bit her bottom lip. “Don’t you dare tell me Michael’s getting married.”

“Sorry,” Vanessa mumbled.

Courtney’s mouth dropped open in shock. “What?” She hadn’t actually thought Vanessa would say it was true.

“I just found out about it a few hours ago.”

“Wow... I thought I was in shock a few days ago. For a guy who’s so commitment-shy he’s suddenly jumped into it with his whole heart, hasn’t he?”

“The wedding will be the day after tomorrow.”

“He’s not wasting any time,” Courtney said.

“He’s really in love with her,” Vanessa said softly.

She nodded. “And one day I’ll be able to say I hope they’re very happy together and mean it,” she said with a sad smile.

“I know this has to be hard for you, but I wanted to tell you before you heard rumors.”

“Thanks,” she smiled weakly. “Yeah, that news will be almost as big as it would be if Nick suddenly decided to get married.”

Vanessa snorted. “I doubt that’ll happen any time soon.”

“I’ll bet Nick freaked out, didn’t he?”

“Oh, yeah,” the girl laughed. “Totally.”

Courtney shook her head. “The poor guy’s probably going crazy with his two best friends suddenly being serious about their girls.”

“He’ll get no sympathy from me.”

She snorted. “Not even a little?”

“Nope. He needs to grow up.”

“I’ll bet he wants strippers,” she guessed. “And probably more than one if I know Nick.”

“Twins,” Vanessa agreed. “Can you believe that?”

Courtney laughed and nodded. “Yeah, I can. Hey, at least he hasn’t convinced them to spend the evening at a strip club.”

“Oh, God, shhhh! Don’t let him hear that idea.”

“I’m sure he’s already got it in mind but he knows if he can’t get two strippers instead of one he’s never gonna get the guys to a club where strippers are the entertainment.”

“You two lucked out. This apartment was actually being held over for another couple but things fell through at the last minute,” the leasing agent said as she unlocked the door to the apartment. “May I ask what brings you to Mount Rainier?”

“We’re lookin’ into colleges here,” Max answered. The woman had been chatting them up since meeting them at the building’s entrance. He held up the thin folder she had handed him and he smiled at her. “We don’t mind lookin’ around on our own if you’d like to go check on our friends.”

She smiled as she let her fingertips graze his arm. “Well, if you wouldn’t mind I’d appreciate that. I wasn’t expecting to show both apartments so I didn’t have an information packet for them. But if you’re alright on your own I’ll just run over to the apartment upstairs and show them the highlights.”

“No, not at all,” he assured her.

“She couldn’t have been any more obvious if she’d taken her clothes off and asked if you’d like sex with the keys,” Liz muttered as she snatched the folder out of his hands.

Max pushed the door shut and snatched the folder right back. “Hey, was I showin’ any interest in her?” He sighed when she just shrugged and wandered further into the large living room. He leaned back against the wall and opened the folder to browse through the floorplan, giving her a few minutes to cool off. Jealousy was a relatively new emotion for her where he was concerned and there was no reason to let it turn into an argument between them.

He reached up to scratch his chin as he glanced over the paper and after turning the folder around so that it was in the correct position he turned and walked in the opposite direction. The bedroom was on the west end of the apartment and across from it was a room that could be used as an office or a den. It wasn’t really big enough to be used for a guestroom, so they would probably use it for a den.

He stepped down into the ‘den’ and walked over to the large windows on the far wall. Part of the lake was visible which meant the bedroom probably had the better view of the water. It was definitely a better view than the one he had of the freeway back home. He looked down at the floorplan again. The master bedroom had a bathroom and there was a half bath off of the hallway near the living room for company.

“Hey,” Liz said as she came up behind him to slide her arms around his waist.

Max covered her hands with one of his. “You okay now?” he asked.

“I was okay all the time,” she denied her jealousy. “Whatcha think?”

“I think you’re ignorin’ the obvious,” he said, shaking his head. “I haven’t checked the bedroom yet.”

“Let’s go then.”

Okay, he thought, they weren’t gonna talk about the jealousy thing. “Floorplan shows a balcony off the master.”

She grabbed his hand and dragged him along the apartment until they reached the bedroom. “Max,” she breathed as she walked to the windows. “Look at this view.”

He smiled and wrapped his arms around her. “It’s a gorgeous view,” he said agreeably.

Liz reached out to open one of the large doors to step out on the balcony. “Wow, it’s big.”

“Yup, room for a table out here... or maybe a swing.”

“So?” She turned around to look at him. “Whatcha think?” she asked again, impatiently. Somehow the idea of moving up here was getting more and more exciting! It wasn’t just the fact that she would miss Maria, it had become more than that. It was also the idea of the sudden new life that was right in front of them. A life as Max’ girlfriend and not only his best friend.

Max could see that she loved it and he had to admit that it was a cool apartment. “How’s the kitchen?” he asked, making her wait for an answer.

She frowned. “I haven’t looked at it yet.”

“We should probably do that, huh? Kitchen and bathroom... best way to gauge whether or not an apartment’s even worth it.”

“Probably right,” she admitted and stepped back inside to look at the bathroom first.

Max followed her, stepping into the room and looking around. The spacious floorplan carried over to the bathroom and he moved past her to check out the shower. It was enclosed with glass bricks and boasted multiple shower heads on the walls. “This would be worth it just for the shower,” he said, nodding in approval.

“Penny for your thoughts,” she teased when she saw his heated gaze after looking at the shower.

“Did you check out this shower?” he growled, pinning her to the wall with his body. “Lots of room to play.”

“Play?” she teased.

“Wanna preview?” he asked and followed up with a passionate kiss.

She grabbed his collar with both hands and dragged him fully into the shower. “Why just a preview?”

He grinned. “Soak me in here and it’s gonna be a cold ride home.”

“We’ll leave the water out for today,” she told him as her hands wandered to his belt.

He hurried to get with the program when she started unbuckling his belt. “Yeah, save the water for later,” he rasped gruffly as his hands moved over her body.

Liz groaned when he brushed against the side of her breasts. She pulled the zipper of his jeans down and ran her hand over his hard length.

“You couldn’t have chosen a better outfit today,” he growled as he reached the hem of her skirt and started tugging it up, sliding his hands over her soft skin.

“Well, you never know what could happen, right?” she breathed against his mouth as her grip around him got tighter.

“Um-hmm,” he mumbled as he lifted her up.

Her free hand came up to rest on his shoulder for support while she tried to shove his jeans and boxers down as much as necessary.

“S’good,” he whispered huskily. He turned to press her back against the glass bricks, using his weight to hold her in place so he could free himself up to shove her panties out of the way. “Oh, God,” he groaned as he entered her and her wet heat surrounded him.

Liz wrapped both of her arms around his neck as she felt her body weaken in response to his actions. It felt like her cheeks were glowing; her whole body seemed to react to him and his touches. “Never known anyone who made me feel like this,” she groaned into his ear when he sped up his trusts.

“I hope not,” he huffed and turned his head to take her mouth in a heated kiss.

“Almost there,” she breathed when she felt her orgasm building in her lower body.

He grunted, incapable of speech because he was already seconds away. Damn it! He moved his right hand between them, teasing her mercilessly to push her over the edge before he completely lost it.

“Fuck,” she hissed as she came faster than expected. Her nails dug into his tee shirt-covered back.

He chuckled breathlessly, ridiculously relieved when she came first. His eyes squeezed shut and every thought fled as his body went rigid. “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he chanted against her shoulder.

Liz chuckled quietly when they both started to relax again.

“What’s so funny?”

“Just thinking about what the agent’s face would look like if she had come down too early.”

He grinned. “Would’ve given her an eyeful, huh?”

They heard the front door being opened and glanced at each other in shock. Liz giggled as she watched Max pulling himself back together.

“Hey, no laughing,” he whispered. “That woman was lookin’ at me like she wanted a piece of me... no need to let her get any more ideas.”

That reminded Liz of her jealousy and she hurried to help Max to get fully dressed again.

“Okay,” he hissed, sucking a breath in when she pulled his belt a notch further than where he normally had it. “I think I’m good now.”

The door to the bathroom was pushed open just as they finished straightening themselves up and the agent glanced at both of them with a suspicious look on her face. “Everything okay?”

Max tried not to grin but it slipped. “Yeah, we’re good,” he answered, doing his best not to laugh.

“Uh-huh,” the woman said, checking the shower behind the couple for any... changes. “So, do you have any questions?”

Max glanced at Liz, one eyebrow quirked in question. He was sold on the apartment and he was pretty sure she was too.

“When can we move in?” Liz blurted out.

The agent glanced between them. “The apartment has a move-in date for the end of the month.”

“End of the month,” Liz mumbled slowly, glancing at Max in question.

He smiled and nodded. “We can always do the paperwork and take care of the deposits and first an’ last month’s rent so we know it’s ours,” he said. “It’s gonna take us a little time to get everything back home packed up and settled so we can move, but it would save us the worries on this end.”

She squealed happily and jumped up and down. “We’re moving!”

Max grinned at her and then glanced at the agent. “You can draw the papers up and we’ll get everything filled out and handle the deposits so we can get the ball rolling.” He took Liz’ hand and nodded at the doorway. “We should probably check on our friends.”

“They’re still up in the other apartment,” the agent said.

“What number was that again?” Liz asked.

“124. Just one floor above.”

Max nodded. “Alright, you have our number and if you’ll email us the applications and everything we’ll get it back to you tomorrow mornin’.”

“I’ll do that.”

“C’mon, Liz, let’s check out the kitchen an’ then go find Kyle and Tess.”

“Sure.” She waved goodbye to the agent and followed Max, still weak in the knees.

Earth2Mother: Courtney is really in a tough position right now. Hooking her up with Nick? Well, it would be a possibility, lol.

We’ll see K&T’s reaction to the apartment today.

Lol, think M&L and K&T will survive under one roof?

begonia9508: Thanks! Yeah, they didn’t waste any time, did they?

Eva: Lol, well, as far as they were concerned it was theirs.

Poor Maria, that is a big moment in any girl’s life and she really does want her mom there.

keepsmiling7: We think you’re right about that. Max just doesn’t want it to become a problem between them.

Natalie36: Well… technically they were in… the apartment, lol.

Cardinal: Lol, Max agrees with you.

Oh, we’re pretty sure Nick will settle down eventually.

True, but she’s got Michael at her side and he’s doing everything he can to work things out on that front.

Alien_Friend: Yeah, lol, too bad it doesn’t work like that in RL, huh?

Courtney’s trying and it helps that she has a good friend in Vanessa.

We’ll have more of those M&L moments. ;)

mary mary: They did seem to be pretty happy about that.

Lol, we suggested that to Nick and he said he didn’t think that was very funny. He’s pretty dedicated to those twin strippers.

sarammlover: Yeah, it’s hard to not feel bad for Courtney here. She’s lucky to have Vanessa. M&L… those two aren’t wasting any time now that they’re on the same page, huh?

Rodney: LOL. Nick happens to agree with you.

Part 57

Kyle was wandering around the apartment, checking out the important things like cable connections, outlets, and the distance between the kitchen, the bathroom, and where the television would be.

“Oh my God, the tub is large, babe,” Tess called from the bathroom.

“What?” he yelled back from the balcony off of the living room. Yup, looked like the previous occupants had had a satellite hooked up. Perfect, that meant the connections were already there and he wouldn’t have to pay extra for them.

“The tub,” she repeated. “It’s huge.”

“Oh, yeah, that’s great!” he hollered as he leaned further out over the railing. /i]He could see the lake from here[/i], he thought. Excellent.

“What do you think?” Tess called again, from the kitchen this time.

It had an awesome view, satellite connections were in place, it was an acceptable distance between the three most important rooms... hell yeah, he was in! “I like it!”

“Yeah?” She appeared in the doorway and looked at him. “Can you imagine living here?”

“Yeah, definitely,” he said as he turned to look at her. “What apartment number were Max an’ Liz checkin’ out? ‘Cause I’m wonderin’ if it’s directly under ours.”

“I think it’s 24.”

“24... and we’re in 124... so does that mean they’re gonna be right under us?”

She shrugged. “Could be.”

“Yeah, well, the floorplan’s different,” Max was saying as he and Liz joined them. “So, what’re you guys thinkin’?”

“We think it’s pretty cool,” Kyle said. “And the apartment’s got satellite connection, no damn cable.”

Tess grabbed Liz’ hand. “C’mon, you have to see the rest of the apartment,” she squealed as she dragged her friend out of the room.

“So... what’s the verdict?” Kyle asked when the girls had left.

“We’re takin’ it,” Max said with a grin.

“Damn,” Kyle leaned back against the balcony railing. “We’re really gonna do this, huh?”

“Think so... could you imagine separatin’ the girls?”

“Not really. I doubt we’d survive that.”

Max snorted. “You doubt it? Can you imagine what kinda bills we’d be lookin’ at? All the traveling back and forth?”

“Yeah, and the cranky moods they’d be in most of the time? No fun!”

“Oh, hell... and imagine... we wouldn’t get a damn break when PMS strikes.”

Tess watched her friend while they wandered around the apartment. “You had sex!” she suddenly said matter-of-factly.

“What?” Liz pretended interest in the walk-in closet.

“Look at me, Parker.”

Liz inwardly rolled her eyes and tried to make her expression as bored as possible as she turned to look at Tess.

“Uh-huh. Flushed cheeks, glistening eyes and weird hair.... ya look... fucked.”

The grin appeared without her permission. “Well, that would be the word for it,” she said. “Good job distracting the agent for a few minutes.”

Tess’ eyes widened. “Oh my God, first ya need years to get it on with Evans and then ya do him HERE?”

Liz laughed so hard she snorted. “Like you’ve never done Kyle someplace out of the ordinary. Besides, we’re taking the apartment, so technically we were just breakin’ it in.”

That made Tess frown. “You already made the decision.”

“You haven’t?”

The blonde shrugged and sat down on the steps that connected bedroom and living room.

Liz frowned. “You’re havin’ second thoughts about movin’?” she asked quietly.

Tess sighed. “It’s just all happening so fast. Moving here means a totally new life.”

She sat down next to Tess and leaned her shoulder against her friend. “You need to slow it down, take some time to think about it?”

“But what would that mean, Liz? The apartment won’t be available anymore and classes will start soon again too.”

“Yeah, but if you’re not sure... I mean, hey, I want you to move here and I want us all to be together. It just feels right, ya know? I mean, Max has been my best friend forever, but you an’ me, we’ve been best friends since you found out about my situation at home when I was 12 and you didn’t make me feel like a loser over it. Life up here wouldn’t be the same without you... and then who would you have to bully into shoppin’? Maria loves to shop with you. Or what about bullyin’ me into talkin’ sometimes? You guys have two totally different approaches.”

That made Tess smile a little. “Yeah, I can’t really leave you two girls alone here, what would you do all day without me?”

“See? Besides you’ll listen to me bitch about the mountain of homework we always get and then join in... Max just sends me to another room until I chill out.”

“You won’t have to call anymore. You could just come up here...”

“Really?” Liz asked slowly. “You’re gonna do it?”

“As much as I love Cali, I would miss you guys too much. And what’s the sense in getting married in Cali on the beach, if you all live up here?”

“You know we’d be there, Tess.”

“Yeah, I know... but you wouldn’t be there to.... Ya know, be happy with me during the whole organization and I need you and Maria for this.”

Liz grinned. “Well, I’m not gonna try to talk ya out of it.” She nudged Tess with her knee. “I heard Seattle’s got some pretty badass malls.” Oh, she’d live to regret that one, she just knew it.

Nick eyed the settings on the dining room table critically. Something wasn’t right but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. “You’ve got the forks all mixed up,” he said finally and rearranged the silverware at one of the settings. “They go like that, dummy,” he said, shaking his head at Tony.

Tony just rolled his eyes at Nick. “Not all of us grew up suckin’ on a silver spoon, kid,” he teased. Nick’s family wasn’t poor but they weren’t at the wealthy end of the scale either. He had an aunt who had married very well and been widowed early, leaving her childless and lonely. The woman had never remarried and he had spent every summer with her being spoiled and schooled in the social graces. It was information he didn’t share with many people, preferring to let people think what they wanted to about him.

“Just fix the silverware while I unpack the rest of the stuff in the kitchen. It would’ve been a lot easier and gone a lot quicker if your girlfriend would’ve just gone to the store for us.”

“Yeah, it would’ve but she’s kinda in a sensitive spot right now,” Tony said as he fixed the silverware. “Her an’ Guerin are friends and her an’ Court are best friends, so…”

Nick just grumbled under his breath as he unpacked the crate of dishes and cookware they had borrowed from the lodge. “Supposed to be plannin’ a bachelor party and instead I’m haulin’ furniture and getting the kitchen ready…”

“What’s that?” Tony called.

“Nothin’.”

Tony chuckled under his breath and straightened the arrangement of fresh flowers in the center of the table. Lena Holt, the manager of the lodge, had gone all out as soon as they had confided in her and shared their mission. It was probably a little fancier than Guerin had been expecting, but saying ‘no’ to Lena just didn’t happen. He glanced around the cabin and wondered what his friend would say when he saw it.

Michael had called them after leaving his soon-to-be in-law’s place, talking a mile a minute as he explained what he wanted to do and asked for their help. Tony wasn’t sure if this was going to help or not, but he’d do anything he could to give them a hand with swaying the parents over to Michael and Maria’s side.

He winced when he heard a loud crash come from the kitchen followed by a lengthy episode of creative cursing. “Hey, you okay in there?” he asked as he walked into the other room.

“Yeah,” Nick muttered as he leaned over to pick up several pots and pans. “Take those crates over there and stick ‘em in one of the bedrooms. The food’s put away, table’s set, cookin’ stuff’s put away with the exception of the stuff I just dropped on the floor… was there anything else we were supposed to do?”

Tony shook his head as he set the lid back on one of the crates and picked it up. “Nope, I think that’s it. Lena did us a major favor sendin’ her crew out with us.”

“True,” Nick agreed. “Guerin’s gonna flip his lid when he sees this setup.”

“Well, I wasn’t about to tell ‘er no.”

“Huh-uh, me either. Last time I did that she told the kitchen crew not to feed me for a week which was cruel ‘cause that’s where I eat most of my meals when we’re not on the mountain.” He shook his head. “Alright, get those crates outta the way so we can scram. I don’t wanna be here when Guerin gets here with his in-laws.”

“Yeah, me either.”

They worked together to get everything finished, giving the place a last check before turning the lights out, leaving the porch light on, and leaving.

*****

Maria smiled when Michael turned off of the main road and she realized he was taking them to the cabin. When he had suggested going out for dinner she had asked him what he had in mind but he had just smiled and shrugged. She’d had to dig around for more information because going out could mean many things and a girl had to know how to dress for the evening. Guys had it easy, she thought with a mental roll of her eyes. A pair of jeans and a tee shirt or a pair of jeans and a nice shirt… casual or dressy… the difference was all about the shirt.

He had finally told her the place they were going wasn’t fancy and casual would work just fine. Which was nice since it was raining lightly and the temperature had dropped considerably as evening had approached. She wondered how they were having dinner at the cabin when there was nothing there but empty rooms and building supplies. She knew the kitchen was finished and new appliances had been installed but the refrigerator and pantry weren’t stocked and she hadn’t seen him carrying anything when they had left the apartment.

The porch light was on, illuminating the area in front of the porch and she wondered when he’d had time to come out and… She glanced at him and smiled. Oh, right, this afternoon when Tony had said he was talking to their boss. She had known he had already taken care of arranging his time off.

“What?” Michael asked, turning to look at her when he felt her gaze on him.

“Nothing,” she denied, unable to stop smiling.

“Uh-huh…” He pulled up in front of the cabin, parking so that her side was close to the steps. “Don’t get out or you’ll get your feet wet.” He pulled the hood of his jacket over his head and got out, running around to her side just as she opened the door. “What’d I just tell you?” he asked, shaking his head at her as scooped her up in his arms and shoved the door shut. “There’s a major mud puddle under your side of the truck,” he said as he took a big step to miss the hole. He set her on her feet on the porch and handed her the keys as he turned to unlace his boots so he could kick them off as soon as they got inside.

“Next time we come here, you’re gonna have to carry me over the threshold,” she teased. Next time they came here she would be Maria Guerin, she added in her thoughts.

“Next time we come out here you’re gonna be carryin’ my last name,” he said as he straightened up and kicked his boots off. He picked them up and watched her for a minute. He smiled suddenly, realizing that no matter what happened tonight they were taking another step towards their future. “Get that door unlocked before that rain comes any further up on the porch and my feet get wet.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t mind if you started undressing before we got something to eat,” she teased as she opened the door. Her eyes widened when she saw the living room. “Oh my God, Michael, this looks beautiful.”

He snorted at her, shaking his head as he shrugged out of his jacket and shook it off before stepping inside. It couldn’t look all that different than it had the other day, he thought. Yeah, he’d asked the guys to get things set up in the dining room because he didn’t want to serve dinner on paper plates… somehow he knew that wouldn’t make any kind of an impression. He’d told Tony that if there was any way he could do anything about the living room that was cool, but he knew the notice was so short that they would be limited on what they could do and the dining room and kitchen were the two most important things.

The fire in the chimney dipped the room into a very comfortable light and there was nothing what would tell you that the cabin was still more a construction area than a place to live. The ugly unpainted blank walls were hidden behind soft beige and brown blankets. There were big vases with even bigger plants in them around the room.

Michael’s mouth dropped open in surprise when he turned around and saw everything that had been done. The best he had been hoping for in the living room was maybe a couple of chairs… the room had been set up to look… He tipped his head to one side as he studied it. The setup was familiar, but why? He watched Maria as she ran one hand over the back of one of the two couches set up on either side of the fireplace and it suddenly hit him.

It was the same setup used in one of the suites at the lodge. He smiled at the realization that his friends had called in reinforcements and the fact that the furniture from one of the suites at the lodge had been pillaged meant Lena had been involved. He swallowed hard as he looked around. They had done an amazing job in the short amount of time they’d had. The guys had given him their blessing and busted their butts to do this for him. Nick too, he realized when he moved to glance into the dining room. Tony wouldn’t have a clue how to set a table like that, he thought. That was all Nick’s doing. “Looks pretty good, huh?”

“Good?” She snorted. “It looks amazing! How’d ya do that? Last time we were here it was all... well, not as nice and today it looks like we can just move in.”

He just smiled and shrugged. He’d tell her later after all the drama had settled down. “Well, maybe not completely ready to move in,” he said. “But we’re not far from it.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and smiled. “I love you, baby.”

“Love you too,” he murmured against her lips. He wondered if he should warn her now that her parents were already on their way or if he should just wait for them to arrive. She was going to be curious when she finally made her way into the dining room and she saw that the table was set for four instead of two.

“Do ya ask Tony to be your best man?” she asked gently as her hands ran over the soft hair at the back of his neck.

He nodded. “He said he’d do it.”

“Cool, he’s the best man for it.” She rested her head against his chest and sighed. “I can’t wait to be your wife.”

He rubbed his chin against the top of her head before stilling. She drove him crazy in a million different ways, most of them good, but she also gave him a sense of peace that he knew he’d never feel with anyone else. His wife… the words brought a smile to his face. “You don’t have long to wait.” He chuckled when his stomach growled. “I think I’d better get started on dinner.”

She grinned. “Ya know, I love that you can cook.”

“You just like to sit back and watch me work,” he teased as he released her.

“I can help if ya want,” she said as they walked into the dining room. “Oh, are we having company? Tony and Vanessa maybe?”

He cleared his throat as his gaze moved over the table set for four. “Um, well…” He was saved from answering when the sound of car doors slamming could be heard. “Sounds like our company’s already here.”

“Well, I’m gonna get the door then, huh?” she said with a smile and started to walk up to the front door. She paused when she saw her parents’ car in front of the cabin. “Um... Michael?”

“Uh, yeah… Maria… I kinda invited them out here…” Damn, what if this didn’t go well? No, he refused to think like that. “So we could talk and get things straight.”

“You invited them?” she hissed, horrified. “Didn’t you get enough the last time?”

Oh, she wasn’t happy about this. “It’ll be okay, baby.”

“It’ll be a disaster,” she made a face.

“Well, yeah, if ya go into it thinkin’ like that.” He shook his head at her in fond exasperation. “Would you just give this a shot?” He hesitated for a few moments. “For me?” It was low, but it would keep her from storming out of the room and refusing to talk to her parents outright.

She snorted. “I really don’t know how you can give him another chance.”

“Because I love you and I want you to be happy,” he said, glancing up when her parents came into view. “Yeah, I know you’re happy with me, but there’s always gonna be a part of you that’s hurtin’ if this thing doesn’t get worked out. Look, Maria, this isn’t easy for me either. Just give it a chance to work. Please?”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “Fine, if you don’t run off afterwards like last night.” She knew she was being irrational and mean right now, but the thought of facing her father again, unprepared, made her sick.

He held his hands up. “I’m not goin’ anywhere, promise.” He pulled the truck keys out of his pocket and held them out to her. “Here, take my keys… I’m not goin’ for a walk in this weather and it’s a looooong walk back into town.”

“You suck, Michael Guerin,” she told him, but then ruined it with a grin. “You can let them in!”

Relief washed over him when her smile surfaced. “No problem,” he said, moving past her to grab the doorknob just as the other couple stepped up onto the porch. He pulled the door open and motioned for them to come inside when the wind started to blow the rain towards the front of the cabin. “How d’you like the weather here?” he asked Amy as she tried to brush the rain from her hair. It rained… a LOT … in Washington, but he enjoyed the weather.

“Do you want an honest answer here?” the older woman asked with a smile.

“Well, I'll admit, it’s not for everyone.”

Maria stood further into the room, arms crossed over her chest as she watched her parents come inside.

Michael glanced between Maria and her parents and he reached up to scratch his eyebrow as he tried to figure out what to do next. He felt a little more at ease here, on his own turf and that made it easier for him to look directly at Carson as he took the coat the man held out to him. “I’ve gotta get dinner started but maybe I can get you a drink first?”

“Oh, I’ll get that,” Amy said as she crossed the room to hug her daughter. “I think Maria and her father could use this opportunity to talk, don’t you, honey?”

Carson shifted uncomfortably. It might’ve been disguised as a question but it was an order to talk to their daughter and fix the mess he’d made. He looked at Maria and smiled slightly. “Maybe you’d like to show me around?” he asked, hoping she’d take the opening.

Maria glanced at Michael, feeling some of her nervousness fading when he nodded slightly. “Yeah, I think I can do that,” she told her father.

“Michael, why don’t I give you a hand with dinner,” Amy offered.

“Oh, well, that’s not necessary,” he protested. “I didn’t invite you over to put you to work.”

She waved him off. “Oh please, I love to cook.”

Carson nodded. “She’ll get angry if you don’t let her cook.”

Michael just nodded as he glanced at Maria once more. “Alright, well, when you put it like that…” He hung their coats on the coat rack that hadn’t been there before Tony and Nick had come over and then walked over to his fiancé. “I know this wasn’t what you had in mind for dinner,” he said quietly as he took her hands in his, “but just give him a chance, okay?”

She smiled tightly and nodded. She knew he was only trying to help but what could her father possibly say or do to change things? He had been perfectly clear about what he thought of Michael and her relationship with him. “You’d better go,” she said and gave him a small nudge. “Otherwise my mom’s gonna take over the kitchen.”

Carson watched them as they talked quietly and he straightened up when his wife gave him a pointed look. As soon as he was left alone with his daughter he cleared his throat and waited several minutes before he spoke. “So, it looks like you’ve made your mind up about what you want.”

“Did you doubt I’d go with what I said?” she asked coldly.

“I just want what’s best for you, Maria. That’s all I’ve ever wanted and maybe at times I’ve gone about it the wrong way, but I’ve only had your best interests in mind.”

“I want to be with Michael because it makes me happy. HE makes me happy, but all you’re gonna do is try to get me away from him. You did it two years ago and now you’re doing it again. Just this time will end different. I’m stayin’ here, whether you want it or not.”

Carson nodded as he crossed the room to sit on one of the couches. Standing across from her was only putting her on edge because he was coming across as confrontational so he changed tactics. “Can I ask you a question without you getting defensive about it?” he asked.

“You can try,” she said, as she started to wander along the room.

“He walked away two years ago... what makes you think this time will be any different?” He winced. The question was harsh but it wasn’t intended to be that way.

“Two years ago he walked away because he overheard a fight between, me, you and Mom about how you would cut my financial support if I stayed with him. He left because he thought he was doing the right thing...” She shrugged. “He thought he wasn’t worthy of me. And besides me, there was no one who told him differently.”

So, they had something in common, he thought and then corrected himself. No, they had two things in common. They both loved Maria and they wanted what was best for her. In hindsight, threatening to cut off financial support had been a childish thing to do and he knew if it weren’t for Michael leaving he would’ve lost his daughter over it. It was a miracle he hadn’t lost her when the boy had taken off. Things had been strained between them and their relationship had suffered for his behavior where Michael was concerned. That was why he had left without so much as a single word to her, he realized in a moment of clarity. He had known that one word to her about why he was leaving and she would’ve cut ties with them and left home without looking back. He glanced towards the kitchen and knew that Michael’s sacrifice had saved what was left of his relationship with his daughter. And now he was doing everything he could to bridge the gap between them so he could be with her and know that he had done his best to help preserve the relationship between father and daughter. The boy loved her that much... and he was a bigger man than Carson was. “I’m sorry,” he said finally.

Maria stopped in her tracks and looked at her father, shocked and surprised. She couldn’t remember a single moment where he had apologized for anything and now here he was...

Carson forced himself to remain still under her surprised gaze. He didn’t say anything else, not knowing what else to say. He wasn’t a man who normally apologized to anyone or for anything. It was a sign of weakness as far as he was concerned, but he was on the verge of losing one of the two most important people to him and if that meant sacrificing some of his pride... well, he would just have to suck it up and deal with it.

“Sorry for what exactly?” she asked carefully. She wasn’t really convinced yet.

“For not seeing what’s been right in front of me all along.” He stood and started to move around the room restlessly. “I had my reasons for my concerns in regard to him and I make no apologies for that. Your safety, your security, and your happiness are all important to me, but I can see now that I’m the one who’s stood in the way of your happiness so for that, I am sorry.” He ran a hand through his hair as he gestured to the room around them. “He’s making headway where the other two are concerned but it’s gonna take time before I’m completely satisfied that he’s met those requirements.”

“He’s a good boy, Dad. Always was. He knows he made some mistakes in the past, but can you really blame him considering the family he had?”

“No, I suppose not. You’ll understand better one day when you have kids of your own, Maria.” He shrugged one shoulder and gave her a tentative smile. “Maybe the two of you will handle things better than I have.”

“You still wanna be showed around?” she asked after a moment of silence between them.

“Yeah, I’d like that,” he said quietly. “I think I’d like that a lot.”

“I guess the other rooms won’t be that nice though... yet. Michael is still working on the cabin. He says we might be able to move in next spring.”

“So, he’s… what exactly? Remodeling the cabin?”

“Yeah, something like that.” She gestured towards the door on her left side. “Let’s go.”

Part 58

Post by Double Trouble »

Earth2Mother: You’re right – things would not be the same without Tess there to stir things up, lol. Carson is finally opening his eyes, and not a moment too soon!

Natalie36: :D Smart ass, huh? Well, better than being a dumbass. ;)

keepsmiling7: Lol, we’ll be checking in on Max and Liz again in this part.

Alien_Friend: He’s made a little progress. Michael’s trying really hard to make sure things are right between Maria and Carson.

The guys are pretty great. Nick has layers, lol.

Just wouldn’t be the same if part of the group was missing.

mary mary: The guys are great and they wanted to make things special for their buddy and his girl… enter Lena, lol. The woman knows her stuff. Carson… let’s hope.

begonia9508: Thanks!

Nick and Tony really outdid themselves.

Carson has finally started to see things from a different – and better – angle.

sarammlover: About time, right? Michael’s doing everything he can think of to make things right between Carson and Maria before the big day. He knows what it’d do to his girl to have that relationship torn up.

Eva: Thanks!

Tess has some very valid concerns. They’re talking about completely changing their lives in a short amount of time, so she has every reason to be cautious.

Lover of Metallica: They’re great guys. Nick just has to get used to his buddies both suddenly being in relationships. He’s not used to being the fifth wheel, lol.

Carson’s making some much needed improvements.

Wedding is still a few parts away, but coming soon.

Part 58

Carson followed her as she led him through the cabin, showing him every room. He could hear the pride in her voice as she talked about the changes that Michael had already made as well as potential future changes as their own family grew.

“Finally,” she stepped into the last room. “The master bedroom with the deck. You’ve got a wonderful view of the mountains.”

“It’s raw, but he’s done a good job with everything he’s done.”

It felt weird to hear her father say something good about Michael. He had never done that before and she could only hope he really meant it and wasn’t just trying to get back on her good side. “It’s not a villa or anything, but it will be comfy here when it’s ready and it’s totally enough for us.”

“You’re a long way from home up here,” he mused as he looked around for several seconds. “Even further away than you are at college. I suppose we can work around that though.”

“You guys can come up and see us. It’s not like we won’t ever see each other.”

“No, of course not. Planes go both ways though… when you can, well, when the two of you can get away I hope you’ll allow me to take care of your flights.”

“Michael’s planning to start his own outfit with Nick and Tony. I’m not sure if we can get away too often in the near future.”

“Well… when you can. Until then your mom and I will be happy to visit.” He stood at the doors that led out onto the deck, staring into the darkness beyond. “He’s gonna be very busy with that and leading those excursions on the mountain.” He turned to look at her, his gaze concerned. “You’ve never had a problem fitting in wherever you are but you’re very selective about your friends… you’re gonna be alone a lot up here.”

“I know what I’m getting myself into, Dad. It’s a risk I’m willing to take. The last two years in California were good, but there wasn’t a day that I didn’t think about Michael. I didn’t know I would find him back here, but I did and I’m not able to just walk away again. I won’t.” She glanced at her father. “Besides that, my friends are already considering moving; they’re looking at some apartments in town right now.”

“Your friends… from California?” he asked, surprised when she nodded. He was a man who relied on his ability to make snap judgments about people and he excelled at reading people but somehow he had failed miserably where the people his daughter cared about were concerned. Sure, he’d run extensive background checks on all four of them and he hadn’t found anything serious but he had simply written them off, expecting the friendships to fade away after college. But she wanted to move to this miserably cold and soaking wet state to be with the man she loved and they were right behind her.

“Yeah... ya know, Liz and I really grew close over the last two years in college. I needed someone to talk to after leaving Roswell and she was there to distract me. Max was her best friend so he was always there too. And Kyle an’ Tess,” she shrugged, “well, they’re crazy, but very loyal.”

“I suppose you’ll be closer to Isabel and Alex up here.” He shrugged when she looked at him. “I may not always listen to what you’re saying but I do recall you saying they had moved to Seattle.” He paused a moment as his eyes swept over the room once more. “I’ll do better where they’re concerned too… I don’t suppose I gave them a very fair shot either.”

She snorted slightly. “You never gave anyone a fair shot, Dad. Well, anyone but Mark I guess. For some reason you liked him.”

He scratched the back of his neck and shrugged. “I should’ve listened when you tried to tell me what you wanted… who you wanted.” He nodded to himself. “You and Michael were so intense, Maria, and I never expected it to last through high school. Honestly, I thought it would run its course and you’d realize that he was never gonna go anywhere in life and you’d move on.” He held his hand up when she started to open her mouth to protest. “I think it’s pretty obvious that I was…” he cleared his throat, “wrong about that. When Mark came along I knew he still had some growing up to do but I thought, ‘hey, here’s a guy that’s going somewhere in life’. He’s from a good family, he’s got a solid future, and…” He looked at her as he shrugged again. “And I was wrong, Maria.”

She had to smile a little. “Yes, you were.”

“So… what can I do to start making up for that?”

“Be nice to Michael.”

He nodded. “That’s probably the least I can do. Can’t be too nice though,” he teased with a smile. “That might scare him off.”

“Yeah, you’re scaring me as well right now, Dad.”

He laughed quietly. “I hope in this case that’s not a bad thing.” His expression sobered. “I don’t wanna lose you, Maria.”

She nodded. “You won’t if you can accept Michael as a part of my life.”

Carson let his gaze drop to her left hand and he stared at the ring there. “You two really aren’t wasting any time are you?” He reached for her hand and held it up to get a closer look. He released her hand and met her gaze directly, hiding a smile when he recognized the challenging look in her eyes. “As long as he does what he’s supposed to do as a man… as a husband and a father… I can accept him.”

Another smile tugged at her lips as she looked at her father. “Are you gonna be there tomorrow, Dad?” she asked in a whisper.

“Askin’ me to give you away?” He smiled slowly and shook his head. “I knew the day you were born that someday some guy was gonna turn your head and I’d have to let you go.” He swallowed hard and nodded. “I’d be honored if you’d let me walk you down the aisle, Maria.”

“Even if it’s gonna be the day after tomorrow?”

“You’re that certain about him?” He reached up to brush his thumb over her cheek when she nodded. He could see the hint of tears sparkling in her eyes as she waited for his answer. “Then they’d better have a damn good tux shop in this town,” he said with a wink. “If not I suppose I’ll be spending the day in Seattle finding one suitable for my little girl’s wedding.”

Maria blinked away the tears. She had never thought her Dad would change his mind about Michael and now here he was, not freaking out about her marriage. “Thanks, Dad,” she said quietly and hugged him.

“I love you, Maria, and I’m very proud of the woman you’ve become.” Carson hugged his daughter tightly. “We’ll probably be in Seattle tomorrow anyway… you’ve gotta have a nice dress if you’re getting married. Find the one you want, I don’t care what it costs.”

“You don’t have to do that, Dad,” she assured him. “Remember how stubborn you were to make sure Michael could take care of me?”

“Yeah, and I’m sure he’s already told you to find the dress you want.” He shook his head. “It’s customary for the bride’s family to pay for the wedding. I’m not gonna insist even though I’d like to because I think I’ve tried to impose what I want on you long enough… but I’d like to pay for it.”

“You have your mother’s sense of diplomacy,” he muttered fondly. “Can that man of yours cook?” he asked as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and they walked back out into the hall.

“He’s cooked for himself his whole life. I guess he’s a lot better than me, Dad.”

“Good because I’m hungry. Your mother wouldn’t let me eat all afternoon because she wanted to make sure I ate tonight.”

“Did Michael come over to invite you?” she asked, even though she was sure it was true.

Carson nodded. “Yeah,” he admitted. “He’s very persistent when it comes to you.”

“He knows I’d miss my parents too much, so he tried,” Maria said, proud of her boyfriend... her fiancé, and how much he had grown up over the last two years.

He cleared his throat. “He can be a lot more vocal than I expected. When he came to talk to us... well, more me than your mother… Anyway, when he came to talk to me I think he said more than I’ve heard him say the entire time I’ve known him.”

“It was probably the first time you listened to him, Dad. He tried to talk to you before.”

“Sometimes I don’t listen as well as I should.” He smiled and shrugged. “I’ll work on it, okay?”

“Okay,” they entered the main room of the cabin again. “It already smells good, don’t ya think?”

“Yes, it does. I wonder if your mom’s taken over the kitchen,” he said with a laugh. “You know how she is when it comes to cookin’.”

“Hmm, we could go and look.”

*****

Michael and Amy were facing each other across the island as they prepared the salad and talked about nothing in particular. He had been expecting her to try and take over so he had been surprised to discover that they worked well together in the kitchen. He glanced at the
doorway again, wondering what was going on between Maria and her father. Their voices had been raised for a while at the beginning and then they had calmed before things had gone silent.

“She’s fine, Michael.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he’s her father. He’s stubborn and sometimes he needs a good swift kick but he’s a good man at heart, Michael. I know you may have a hard time believing that, but all he’s ever wanted was what was best for her.”

Michael shrugged. “No, I do believe that. I just wish that he’d been a little more open. To be honest, I don’t know if we would’ve been ready for this a couple years ago, but... what I do know is that we’re ready now and havin’ your support means a lot to her.”

“So does this mean I need to buy a fancy dress for a wedding?” she asked curious with a smile.

“That’s Maria’s department,” he hurried to clarify. “Tux, ring, and show up to say ‘I do’... that’s my part. Dresses an’ anything else of that nature, that's all Maria. Or Tess, depending on who you ask.”

Amy put the knife she was holding aside and walked around the island to hug her soon to be son-in-law. “Congratulations, Michael.”

He was surprised by the embrace and her words. She had surprised him when she had seemed to support him and Maria but this was proof that she had accepted them as a couple. “Thanks,” he muttered, hesitantly returning the hug. He wasn’t used to people just hugging him and he always felt awkward and stiff with anyone but Maria.

“Have you have set a date yet?” she asked as she released him.

He cleared his throat and wondered how she’d react. “Tomorrow night.”

“Wow, we need to do some serious shopping tomorrow then,” she chuckled.

“Yeah, well, y’all have fun with that.” He had no intention of spending the day shopping.

“Oh, no, you need a tux, Michael.”

“Well, yeah, but… there’s a place right here in town, so I can…” he trailed off when she just shook her head. “Um… no?”

Amy laughed. “Probably not.”

“I’m pretty sure I can get a tux there as well as anywhere else.” He was starting to sweat. No way did he want to spend the next day being dragged around from shop to shop looking for a tux.

“Hey, I thought you two were cooking,” Maria teased as she stood in the doorframe.

“Yeah…” Michael said slowly. “We were. Are… we are. Your mom wanted to know about a dress. I told her she needed to check with you since you guys would probably be shoppin’ an’ stuff tomorrow.”

“Yeah, I’d better get a dress by tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” he agreed, “you guys should head out early.”

“Wanna get me out of the apartment or something?” she teased and walked further into the room.

“No, just um…” he winced. “Tryin’ to get outta shoppin’.”

She leaned over the counter to look at the food. “Why don’t we eat first and talk about the other stuff later? I’m starvin’.”

Michael glanced between Maria and Carson, quirking his eyebrow just enough for her to know he was asking if everything was okay. He smiled slightly when she nodded. “Works for me,” he said. If he could put off any talk of shopping long enough maybe they’d forget all about his participation.

“What’s for dinner?” Carson wanted to know.

“Steak with fries or baked potato and a salad.”

“You made fries and baked potatoes?” he asked.

Michael shrugged. “Maria and I disagree over which one goes better with steak.”

“Definitely baked potatoes,” Maria and her father answered at the same time.

He shook his head at them. “You couldn’t be more wrong.”

“Oh, shut up,” Maria smacked his arm. “You obviously have no taste in good food.”

“Just for that I oughta let you make breakfast tomorrow. Maybe omelets,” he said with a teasing grin.

Carson chuckled. “Her omelets are awful.”

“Dad!” Maria protested. “They’re not awful… they just don’t look exactly like an omelet when they’re done.”

“Yeah, that’s for sure,” Michael muttered. “But, they taste great,” he hurried to assure her when she gave him a dark look.

“And that’s why you gonna cook for us, buddy,” she told him with a grin.

“Hey, we’ve got a deal… Breakfast is mine and dinner’s yours.”

She shrugged. “Deal just broke.”

He snorted. “Okay, just remember that,” he said as a playful look entered his dark eyes. “We’ll discuss it again… later.”

*****

The rain pounded against the jeep, the fat raindrops beating out a staccato rhythm in counterpoint to the music playing on the radio. They had enjoyed a nice dinner in a nearby town, losing track of time as the hours passed by and they talked about how things were changing so fast.

Max glanced at Liz when she shifted and he caught her staring at him. “What’re you thinkin’?” he asked.

“I don’t think I’ve seen this much rain the entire time I’ve lived in California,” she said, shaking her head.

“You do know it rains a lot up here, don’t you?”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Yeah, I know that. It would explain why it’s so green around here.”

“Not what you were thinkin’ about though.”

“No.” Liz shifted her gaze back to the windshield. “I was just thinkin’ about Maria getting married day after tomorrow and wondering what you think about it. I know she’s happy and I’m happy she’s happy, but... I don’t know. Do you think it’s too soon?”

He shrugged his left shoulder and shook his head. “No. I think when it’s right you know it... and they know it.”

“Yeah,” she said absentmindedly as she stared out into the dark forest. “She seems to be very sure it’s the right thing to do.”

“Yeah, she knows what she’s doin’.” He squeezed her hand. “You worried that I’ve got an engagement ring I’m just waitin’ to spring on you when you least suspect it?” he asked with a teasing grin.

She snorted. “No, you know I’m not ready to think about that huge step.”

“No,” he chuckled, “I’m aware of that. Just don’t want you thinkin’ I’m gonna hit ya with that question any time soon.” A loud popping sound and the front end of the jeep on the passengers’ side suddenly sinking had Max jerking his hand free of hers as he tried to control the jeep on the wet road. He was vaguely aware of her terrified scream as the jeep slid off of the road and his right arm shot across her body out of pure reaction, not thinking that her seatbelt would hold her as the jeep began to tip. The next few seconds were a blur and felt like hours as the jeep rolled down a steep embankment and finally stopped with his side pressed to the muddy ground.

*****

Max shook his head to clear it and instantly regretted it when it started to pound. He wiped his hand over his eyes, ignoring the feeling of something wet and sticky creeping down his temple. He looked up at Liz and felt nausea roll over him when he saw the way she was hanging limply, the seatbelt the only thing preventing her from collapsing on top of him. “Liz...” He shifted to free himself and hissed when white hot pain shot up through his left arm where it was pinned between his body and the door of the jeep. He inhaled a sharp breath and blinked back the tears that had surfaced at the pain. “Damn it.” He sank his teeth into his bottom lip as he shifted again, easing his arm free and then unbuckling his seatbelt. “Liz,” he called her again.

Liz could her someone calling her name. It sounded far away through, as if the voice was muffled by something. She wanted to move, but her body wouldn’t obey. There it was again, someone was calling her name. She felt a touch on her face, but she still struggled to open her eyes.

Max checked the clip on his belt and realized that his phone was no longer there. “Damn it.” He knew Liz most likely still had hers because she kept it in her pocket. His jeep was equipped with GPS and he subscribed to a service that would send help so he wasn’t concerned about help arriving. He focused on his girlfriend once more. “Liz, c’mon, darlin’.” He bit back a curse when he smacked his left arm on the steering wheel as he wiggled around until he was sitting on the door. “Hey, girl, wake up for me.” He ran his uninjured hand over her face and body, relieved when nothing felt broken.

He finally withdrew his hand and he worked himself around until he could stand up, pushing his shoulder up under her left thigh to relieve some of the pressure on her where the seatbelt was holding her suspended. He fumbled around for the handle, rolling the window down and ducking his head down when broken glass showered down over his head. The cold air and the rain would hopefully help her to regain consciousness so they could get out of the jeep.

Something cold was hitting her head, she could feel it but couldn’t focus on it. It was tugging on her, as if she was about to wake up from a very long and deep sleep. “Max,” she mumbled the first thing that came to her mind.

Relief flooded his body when he heard the low murmur of her voice. “Liz, can you tell me if you’re hurt?” He hadn’t been able to locate any broken bones but internal injuries could be even more dangerous. He shook his head when the rain ran into his eyes and he rubbed his forehead against his arm. “Liz, hey, don’t go to sleep on me… talk to me. Are you hurt anywhere?” He knew she was going to be sporting some pretty serious bruising from the seatbelt and that was bound to hurt but would she be able to tell if it was something more serious?

Liz forced her mind to focus on Max and his questions. She frowned when she mentally ran over her body to see if anything felt weird. “I... I don’t feel anything.”

“Okay, that’s good…” He paused. No, wait, that could be very, very bad. “Wait, Liz… you can’t feel anything like pain or anything at all?” He forced the panic to the back of his mind as he waited for her answer.

“It hurts to breathe a little, but that’s pretty much it,” she said, her mind getting clearer.

“That’s probably from the seatbelt.” At least he hoped that was all it was. “I’ve gotta get you outta the seatbelt, okay? You’re gonna have to hold onto me or the door so you don’t fall when I release the belt, you got that?” He reached up to cradle her face in his hands, ignoring the pain in his left arm. “Liz, I need you to focus on me. We need to get outta here and away from the jeep. Can you do that for me?”

She looked at him and nodded. “You’re bleeding,” she reached out to run her hand over his face.

He shook his head. “I’m okay. Grab onto somethin’ so I don’t drop you.” He chuckled. “Lemme know when you’re ready.”

She tried to move her leg against the console between the seats and grabbed the door. “Okay, ready.”

Max reached for the release for seatbelt and frowned when pressing it didn’t produce any results. “Damn thing’s locked up,” he muttered. “Alright, just hang on a sec.” He rolled his eyes when he caught her smirk at his unintentional pun. “Sorry. I’m gonna have to cut you loose.” He reached down, reaching around to his left side for the case that held the utility tool he carried everywhere. He unsnapped the case and pulled the tool out and held it in his left hand, wincing in pain when tightening his grip caused his arm to throb.

She frowned. “Are you in pain?”

“I think my arm’s broken,” he said, knowing lying to her would be a waste of time.

“Shit,” she muttered. “Can I help you with somethin’ here?”

“Just keep your weight off of the straps so I can cut ‘em… and be glad I’m not left-handed,” he added with a hint of a smile. “Remind me to have a word with the company that put those tires on when we get back to California. These tires are brand new… no reason for a blowout.”

“I’ll sure as hell remind you,” she promised and grabbed the door again. “Go!”

He snorted. She’d probably be on the phone with them first thing in the morning, he thought as he cut the strap at her shoulder first and then moved to the one at her waist. He felt her weight shift as she was freed from the restraints and he looked up at her. “You gonna need some help getting up an’ outta here?” he asked. “The roof’s up against somethin’ so window’s our only way out.”

“No, I’m good, I think I can do it on my own.”

“Okay. I don’t know if you’re gonna be able to drop down on the other side or not. I have no idea which side of the jeep is facing the road and you don’t wanna jump down if we’re facin’ downhill. You might have to crawl down over the hood.” He shook his head. “I’m not tellin’ you anything you don't know… just be careful, Liz.”

“I can do that,” she said, already moving to get out of the open window. She lifted her upper body out and glanced around. “It’s safe to just get out without climbing over the hood, Max.”

“Great, somethin’ that’s gonna go right,” he muttered. He kept an eye on Liz as she pulled herself the rest of the way up and he eyed the opening critically. He had a bad feeling no matter what he did this was gonna hurt. He used the steering column for leverage and got up high enough to brace his upper left arm on the doorframe before grabbing onto the frame with his right hand and pulling himself up. Sweat began to bead up on his brow as the pain exploded in his left arm and he paused to take in a deep breath when he got up high enough that he could use the passengers’ seat as a step. He shoved himself up and twisted his body around to sit on the frame, thankful for the cool air because he felt like he was too hot. He knew it was probably just the combination of nausea and pain but that didn’t really make him feel any better.

“Let me help you,” Liz said and stood close by to steady him. “Do you have your cell with ya?”

“Thanks.” He shook his head. “It must’ve come loose durin’ that roller coaster ride.”

“Damn,” she fumbled in the pocket of her jeans. “Mine feels like it’s broken.”

“S’okay, the jeep’s equipped with that system…” he frowned. “I can’t think of what it’s called right now. Weird. Anyway, rescue should be on its way already. Just might take a few minutes since we’re in the middle of nowhere.”

“Okay, good,” she said and with the relief she felt came the dizziness. “Um, Max...” was all she got to say before everything went black again.

“Liz!” The pain in his arm only got worse when his arms wrapped around her to keep from falling. He glanced around, squinting against the rain and the darkness as he tried to see anything. He turned around and started to walk backwards, dragging her over to a large tree that would at least provide them with some shelter from the rain while they waited for rescue. He shrugged his right arm out of his jacket and then worked his left arm free so he could protect her from the worst of the cold. Damn, he was glad they had both dressed for the weather when they had gone out tonight, he thought as he rubbed her arms with his right hand and pressed her closer with his left arm. He was using his upper arm as much as possible but it wasn’t stopping the pain and he leaned his head back against the tree, drawing in deep breaths when the edges of his vision started to go black again. He had to stay conscious long enough for someone to find them.

It took another five minutes until Max could hear sirens, but they were getting louder quickly. A car stopped with squealing tires and he could see the light of it through the rain and trees.

“Hello?” someone yelled through the night.

He blinked and looked away when the bright beam of a flashlight swept across the area, momentarily blinding him. He opened his mouth to yell out but for some reason nothing came out. He frowned when he felt Liz being pulled away from him and he fought to hold onto her. He was vaguely aware of several people suddenly surrounding them and the voices were muffled, like they were under water.

“Here, kid, you’re gonna have to let go of her,” a kind voice said though he couldn’t seem to comprehend the words.

“Boy’s arm’s busted,” another voice spoke up.

“You two get the girl topside,” the one with the kind voice ordered. “We’ll get him. He won’t be walkin’ back up there on his own.” He turned to look at the boy in question when he suddenly spoke, his voice weak as he fought the darkness trying to pull him under.

“Liz…”

“She’s safe, kid. We’ll take good care of her, promise. Now, let’s see about getting you back up to the road so we can transport you over to County General.” He leaned in closer when the kid spoke up again and he just barely caught the whispered word. “Together?” He glanced over his shoulder where the others were carrying the girl back up the hill. “No problem, we can handle that.”

Max nodded. He was unaware of the hands reaching for him as he slipped into unconsciousness, the darkness warm and welcoming and freeing him from the pain.

Part 59

Post by Double Trouble »

kismet: Lol, well, we’re not that cruel! Think this might change Liz’ way of thinking, huh?

Carson has finally realized that if he doesn’t man up and accept Michael he’s gonna lose his daughter.

We’re back… let’s go check on Max and Liz.

Earth2Mother: We’ll find out more about Max and Liz in this next update.

Yeah, he took his own sweet time getting to this point, didn’t he?

Time is running out and there’s still a dress to find… they’ll be getting to that soon. Very soon, lol.

begonia9508: The weather combined with the tire blowing out caused the accident.

We won’t make you wait long to find out how they are, promise.

keepsmiling7: Now, you know you should NEVER ask that question, lol.

We’ll check in on them in this next update.

mary mary: Well… that’s not totally true… and there will be happiness and prosperity again. C’mon now. :)

We’re bringing it… and fixing it.

Eva: Lol!

Don’tcha just hate that? It’s so true. It wasn’t a good surprise at all.

We won’t make ya wait long to find out how they are, promise.

Alien_Friend: Slippery road and a blowout… not a good combination at all. You know Max… Liz is his priority.

The wedding… we’ll see how this affects the plans.

Finally, right? Carson took his time getting to this point.

Lol, well, considering the source we can understand why you can’t wait to see but are also a bit scared. ;)

sarammlover: We hope ya took a nice long breath afterwards, lol. We’ll see how this affects the wedding plans. More is what you get. :)

Natalie36: We’ll check in on them in this next update. Michael and Maria really needed that weight gone, didn’t they?

Part 59

Tess carried two bottles of beer and some chips to the fireplace where Kyle was already waiting for her. “Wow, it’s quiet here, huh? Not used to that after this trip,” she told him as she sat down next to him, handing him one of the beers.

“Yeah, isn’t it nice?” he asked grinning and hooking one arm around her.

She leaned against his shoulder and sighed. “Yeah.”

“You don’t sound all that convinced,” he told her, using his hand to turn her face towards him. “Everything okay?”

“Sure. I’m just trying to get used to all the changes ya know? Never would’ve thought that this trip was gonna change our lives completely.”

“You know that we don’t have to follow the others down here if you prefer to stay in California, right? I don’t want you to make this big of a step if you don’t think you can be happy here.”

“I don’t know, Kyle. It’s new and it’s kinda exciting but it rains here like all the time. What if we uproot our entire lives to move here and then decide we hate it?”

“We can still go back to Cali and see how it goes there without the others before we decide what we’re gonna do.”

“You wouldn’t mind? I mean, I love our friends and I know I’ll miss seeing them all the time, but I’m just not sure I’m ready to pick up and move away from home.”

He smiled. “I’m goin’ where you go, Tess, and if you’re not ready for this, then we’ll wait.”

“Okay, maybe we can wait then. I was lookin’ forward to all the wedding stuff with Liz and Maria, but… well, it’s not like they’ll be living all that far away, right?”

“Right. We’ll figure it out, Tess.”

“You’re right.” She took a sip of her beer and stared into the fireplace. “We don’t have to jump into a decision just because the others are. I can’t believe Max and Liz have already picked out an apartment.”

Kyle shrugged. “They’re a little more impulsive than we are. Her mom and step-dad travel a lot and she’s not that close to them anyway and Max’s mom got that job offer with that law firm back east so his parents moved after he started college. They don’t really have anything tying them down to California.” He glanced up when her phone started to ring. She had left it on the kitchen counter when they had come in earlier along with his since neither of them had planned on taking any calls. “Forget to turn the ringer off?”

She waved it off. “That’s what voicemail’s for.” She smiled when it stopped ringing. “See? Besides, if it was an emergency they’d – “ She frowned when it started to ring again a moment later. “Call back,” she finished, looking at him as she got to her feet.

Kyle sat up straighter when she hurried across the room to grab her phone and his expression sobered when he heard her shocked gasp and a moment later she was agreeing to go somewhere. He stood up and went after her when he heard her asking for directions. He stepped into the kitchen and saw her scrawling on a piece of paper and he waited until she had ended the call before he spoke. “Hey, what’s goin’ on?”

“Max and Liz were in an accident. They’re in the hospital, Kyle.”

“Are they okay?” he asked, pulling her to him with one arm and reaching for his wallet and keys with his free hand.

“They couldn’t say anything specific right now, I don’t know,” she mumbled.

“Okay, well, let’s not think the worst until we get there and find out what’s goin’ on, okay?”

She nodded. “Should we call Maria?”

“Let’s wait on that. She’s got a lot goin’ on tonight and I’d rather get to the hospital and be able to tell ‘er somethin’ when we call.” He took her hand and led her out of the kitchen, snagging their jackets off of the rack by the door.

“I really hope they’re okay,” Tess said worriedly as she followed Kyle.

“They probably just got knocked around. Jeeps can take a beating and I’m sure they were both belted in.” He held her jacket up for her and once she had slid her arms into the sleeves he reached for the door. “C’mon, the sooner we get there the sooner we’ll know somethin’.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right,” she said, really wanting to believe it.

The drive to the hospital seemed to take hours but in reality lasted less than 15 minutes. Kyle pulled into a parking space in the lot behind the emergency room entrance and they hurried inside to the admissions desk. He explained who they were and why they were there and Tess’ fingernails bit into his palm as she squeezed his hand and waited for the woman sitting at the computer to tell them something.

“You’re family?” the woman asked.

“Close enough,” he answered with a nod.

“I’m sorry, I can’t release any information – “

Kyle tugged his fiancé back away from the desk before she could go off on the woman. “Ma’am, we’re listed as Liz Parker’s emergency contacts and I don’t know who, but someone at this hospital called us because she was in an accident with her boyfriend, Max Evans. I’m sure if you’ll check with the person who makes notifications you’ll see that what I’m tellin’ you’s true.” Max was listed first as Liz’ emergency contact and after him was Tess and Maria.

“If you’ll hold on I’ll check on that and see if we can get you some information on your friends,” she said with a polite smile.

“God, as if we wouldn’t get to know the truth anyway. Why do they always have to come up with the ‘are you family’ shit?”

“Take it easy,” he murmured as he pulled her into his arms. “She’s just followin’ policy; it’s not her fault.” More than half an hour passed before the woman returned with the person who had contacted them.

“Ms. Harding?” the older woman asked with a slight smile. “I apologize for the delay. If you’ll come with me I’ll take you to your friends. They’re gonna be fine,” she said reassuringly. “They have some bumps and bruises and Mr. Evans has a broken arm, and the doctor does want to keep them for observation but as of right now all indications show that they’ll be released tomorrow or the day after.”

“Thank God,” Tess said, relieved and smiling at Kyle.

He smiled back and they followed the woman down the corridor to the curtained off cubicles where their friends were waiting.

“They haven’t been moved to a room yet. Mr. Evans is waiting for our orthopaedic surgeon to take a look at his films so they can set his arm. Ms. Parker has refused to be moved until he’s moved so maybe you’ll be a little more persuasive with her.” She smiled kindly and motioned for them to wait as she stepped past the curtains and a moment later she stepped back out. “Just making sure everyone’s decent,” she said with a wink. “I’ll be back shortly to check on them.”

Tess stepped in first, shaking her head. “You two can’t be left alone, huh? Not even for one evening.”

“Hey, look who’s here.” Max gave her a lopsided drug-induced grin.

“Hey,” Tess hugged him, “are you okay?”

“’m good,” he said, giving her a one-armed hug. “Think I broke my…” he frowned as he looked down at the arm that was cradled to his chest. “My um…” He dropped his head back against the pillows and grinned goofily. “Somethin’.”

“Your arm, dummy,” Liz mumbled, trying hard to keep from crying. Why was it something like this just made you so emotional? she wondered irritably. She hated being so vulnerable and scared. That nurse should’ve given her a shot of whatever they had dosed Max up with because right now he wasn’t feeling any pain at all.

“What about you?” Kyle asked, sitting down on the edge of Liz’ bed.

“I’m fine,” she insisted, her eyes locked on Max. How close had she come to losing the most important person in her life?

“He’ll be fine,” he told her with an encouraging smile. “He’s just drugged right now.”

“He’s high as a kite,” she said with a soft snort. She gave him a quick hug, knowing that if she let anyone hug her for very long she’d start bawling like a big baby. “I’m glad you guys are here.”

“Of course we’re here, where else would we be?” Tess shook her head and finally realized there was no way she could live without them in California. If they really moved here, yeah... then so would she and Kyle. Bad weather or not, she NEEDED her friends around.

Liz was saved from having to say anything else when a doctor walked in, giving them a brief smile as he moved to Max’ bedside and reached for his arm. “I’m Dr. Brinkley,” he introduced himself as he gently probed Max’ arm. “Bet you’re feelin’ pretty good, aren’t you?” He nodded at the slurred response he received. “We’ll be taking him down to set his arm in a few minutes. I’ve looked at his films and the break was clean so I don’t foresee any problems.” He spent the next few minutes explaining what they would be doing and just as he was finishing an orderly stepped inside and nodded at the doctor. “Eddie’s your chauffer and he’ll be taking you down so we can get you all fixed up, Mr. Evans.” He smiled reassuringly at the brunette who had been asking the questions about the procedure and what they could expect afterwards. “We’ll take good care of him, Ms. Parker and Eddie’ll bring him back to you shortly.”

She nodded and glanced at Max when he called her name.

“Don’t worry ‘bout me… be back soon.” His right hand gripped the bedrail when Eddie released the brakes and started to push the bed. “Love ya, Parker.”

“I love you too, Max,” she said and it totally slipped her notice that it was the first time she had gotten the words out... easily and without thinking.

“Hey, don’t bother the nurses,” Kyle teased, reaching out to pat Max’ shoulder as he was wheeled past them.

“Nah, not me,” he denied. “Already got my nurse.” He reached up to poke the orderly and pointed at Liz. “Tha’s my girl,” he slurred, making the man shake his head and smile.

“Be careful with him,” Tess warned the orderly.

Max tipped his head back to look up at Eddie as he pointed at Tess. “I’d listen to her… s’my overprotective vampiress right there. People think we hate each other, but really, she’s one of my best friends,” he confided in a loud whisper.

Tess rolled her eyes with a smile when Max finally disappeared with the orderly. She sat down on the other side of the bed and brushed one hand over Liz’s hair.

Kyle looked at his girlfriend, stunned and coughing slightly when she didn’t seem to be excited.

“What?” Tess asked when she caught the meaningful glances from her boyfriend.

He rolled his eyes. How was it possible that something like that had slipped past Tess’ radar? “She said the L word,” he hissed. He nodded when she made a motion for him to leave them alone. “Why don’t I go get us somethin’ to drink?”

“Sooooo,” Tess turned to her friend after her boyfriend had left. “What's goin’ on? You told him you love him? Did ya say it before now?”

Liz reached up to brush her hair back, wincing when her muscles protested the small movement. “What?”

“I love you! Did you say it before tonight?” the blonde asked, helping her friend with her hair.

“What’re you…” Her eyes widened. “I said it? Just now?”

Tess giggled and nodded. “Not sure he’ll remember when he isn’t drugged anymore though.”

“Great,” Liz muttered. “First time I say it and he’s in no condition to remember it.”

“Take it as good practice for the next time.”

She nodded and stared at several small cuts on the back of her right hand. “The hospital called you?” she asked, grasping for something to talk about.

“Yeah, way to ruin my evening, Parker,” Tess said softly and winked at her to let her friend know she was just kidding.

Liz gave her a small smile, thankful for the rare display of restraint Tess was showing. “Didn’t do much for my evening either.”

“I’m glad you’re both okay. You’ll be out in no time, girl, it’s all good.”

Liz snorted and rubbed her forehead, wishing the pounding would stop. “You guys didn’t call Maria, did you?”

“Not yet, no.”

“There’s no reason to call her tonight. She’s got enough going on. We can tell her about this tomorrow.” She rubbed the bridge of her nose. “On second thought, maybe that’s not a good idea. She’ll be pissed if we don’t call her about this tonight.” Worse than that she’d be hurt.

Tess glanced at her watch. It was already late, so they should be finished with dinner. “Want me to call her now?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“Okay,” she got up from the bed. “I’ll be back in a few minutes, okay?”

Liz nodded and leaned back against the pillow when Tess disappeared. She took a deep breath and released it slowly, looking up when the curtain moved aside and Kyle joined her again.

“Hey, how ya feelin’, Liz?” he asked as he sat on the edge of the bed. He held a root beer out to her. “Here, I snuck this in for you.”

*****

Michael shoved the key to the front door into the lock and turned it, unlocking the door and shoving it open.

“God, I think I’m gonna burst soon,” Maria groaned and rubbed her belly. “I had way too much food.”

He laughed. “No wonder, baby, you ate enough for two.” He glanced at her, amused. “Got somethin’ ya wanna tell me?”

She smacked his shoulder playfully. “I don’t think we should hit my parents with news like that any time soon. They’re just getting used to us being together and getting married.” Wow, she thought, that sounded so unreal. Who would’ve thought that her father would be able to give in?

“Yeah, think you’re right about that,” he said as he shrugged out of his jacket and hung it up behind the door. He walked into the kitchen and dropped his keys on the counter. “You want anything to drink?” he asked as he pulled the refrigerator door open.

“We could try the wine again?” she said. “And maybe we’ll manage to drink it this time.”

“Alright.” He glanced over at the fireplace as he thought back to the night before.

Maria walked over to the counter and grabbed the keys and then going back to the front door to check the lock. “Just to make sure,” she said with a wink.

He reached for the glasses they had never used the night before, pulling them down and setting them on the counter. “Your dad say anything about the cabin?” he asked, wondering what the older man had thought about it.

“He loved it. I think he was pretty surprised.”

“Well, it’s a start at least,” he said. “Things went pretty well tonight.” He glanced up when a cell phone started to ring. “Gotta be you, that’s not my ring.”

Maria frowned and went to get her bag on the counter. “It’s Tess,” she mumbled before she flipped it open. “Hello?”

He checked his watch, frowning at the late hour. As a rule people didn’t call this late unless there was an emergency. It didn’t take long before he was certain that something was wrong but he knew it would only take longer to find out what was going on if he interrupted the call. He waited until she ended the call with a promise to see them first thing in the morning before asking, “What’s goin’ on?”

“Max and Liz had an accident,” she told him, still shocked.

“They okay?” he asked as he walked out of the kitchen to take her in his arms.

“Tess says they’re doin’ okay. Max’ arm is broken though.”

“She an’ Kyle at the hospital with ‘em?” He smirked when she nodded. “Well, then I’m sure she’d know. She’s probably houndin’ the doctors and nurses every five minutes. You okay waitin’ until tomorrow mornin’?”

“Yeah, she said we wouldn’t be allowed to get in there right now since it’s late and they don’t want too many people around.”

“Probably not. They like to keep it pretty quiet after 8 or 9pm.” He made a face. “They had me in there for a couple days early last year and I thought I was gonna go crazy. They’ll probably let ‘em go tomorrow or the next day and at least they’ve got each other so that’ll help pass the time.”

She leaned back to look up at him. “Why were you in the hospital?”

He shrugged. “Had a panicked climber come at me with an ice pick. Definitely a memorable trip.”

“It must’ve been serious if they kept you for a few days, Michael,” she said as she walked into the bedroom to change into something more comfortable.

“The doctors were just bein’ cautious since I didn’t have anyone at home and the meds they had me on were pretty strong.”

She came back wearing one of his tee shirts and smirked. “Well, that won’t happen anymore; you’ll have a wife at home waiting for ya now.”

“I’m sure the doctors’ll be happy to know about that change. I wasn’t the easiest patient they’ve ever had to deal with. Most of the staff cringes when they see me comin’ through the doors,” he said as he opened up the bottle of wine.

“Hmm... somehow I don’t think the NURSES would complain at all.”

“Uh-huh, watch ‘em when we go over there tomorrow.”

“I really hope they’re both okay.”

He poured wine into the glasses, handing her one and motioning to the fireplace. “She say what happened?”

“No, just that it was a car accident. She said she hadn’t asked what happened yet.”

He nodded and handed her his glass so he could get a fire going. “I’m sure they’re fine, baby. Tess would’ve told you if they weren’t.”

“Yeah,” she said, lost in thought as she walked over to sit in front of the fireplace.

He glanced over his shoulder when she sat down nearby. “What’re you thinkin’ about?” he asked.

She shrugged. “Just worried. Liz and Max are my best friends.”

He left the firewood untouched as he moved to sit behind her and pull her back against his chest. “Maybe you should call Tess back an’ see if you can talk to Liz,” he suggested.

“They’re still in the emergency room, so no cell’s allowed there. But she told me she’ll send me their number as soon as they’ve got their room for the night.”

He couldn’t think of a single thing he could say that would make her feel better so he just held her a little tighter.

Maria glanced at her hand that rested on his arm and smiled when she saw the ring there. “I’m gonna be your wife,” she said slowly, her stomach doing a flip flop at the thought.

He rested his chin on her shoulder and looked at the ring she was staring at. “You think it’ll take long to get used to that? Us bein’ married, I mean.”

“I don’t wanna get used to it,” she told him. “I wanna always think: Wow, I’m Michael Guerin’s wife.”

He chuckled. “Yeah? You haven’t forgotten what a bear I can be have you?”

She snorted. “How could I forget that, huh? But I can live with that, you’ve got other qualities.”

“Other qualities, huh?” His smirk made an appearance. “That’s good.”

She leaned forward and wiggled around a bit to face him, picking their glasses up from the floor. “I don’t think there’s a better man out there for me than you,” Maria told him honestly and handed him a glass.

“That’s good,” he said as he accepted the glass from her, “’cause you’re kinda stuck with me for the rest of our lives now.”

“And I’m not afraid of that.”

“Well, no one’s ever accused you of that.” He smiled and tapped his glass against hers. “Here’s to a lifetime together… a lifetime of love and drivin’ each other crazy.”

Maria smiled and sipped her wine before leaning forward and kissing him gently.

“Sweeter than usual,” he murmured against her lips as he brought his right hand up to cradle her neck.

She leaned further into him, letting him deepen the kiss.

Michael stretched his arm out to set his glass down safely out of range before taking hers and placing it next to his. “Don’t think we’re gonna need them,” he whispered.

She bit her lip at his husky tone and her hands ran along the sides of his neck.

He shifted, using his weight to press her back against the blanket and resting his right hand on her hip. “Think this’s gonna feel any different when we’re married?”

“Afraid?” she teased slightly.

He snorted and shook his head. “Nah, just wonderin’. I’m not so dense that I think marriage is just a piece of paper so I was just wonderin’ if it makes sex any different,” he mused thoughtfully as he lowered his head to suck on the tender spot below her ear.

“I think it won’t change us, it’ll just make our connection to each other even stronger.”

He nodded. “I can live with that,” he growled, nipping her neck before soothing it with his tongue.

“Yeah,” she mumbled, feeling light-headed. She lifted her chin to give him better access.

He chuckled as he took his cues from her, following her silent direction and trailing kisses along her throat and working his way down. His hand toyed with the hem of her shirt before tugging it away from her waistline and sliding his hand over her skin.

His gentleness touched her deeply and those moments took her back to the lonely nights when she had cried for him all alone. She didn’t want to feel that emptiness in her ever again and she trusted him to make sure of it.

Michael felt the tiny shift in her and his hand continued to stroke her side, teasing the edge of her bra and backing off again as he lifted his head to look at her. “You okay?” he asked quietly.

“More than that,” she assured him.

“Okay,” he said with a smile that he hoped didn’t look confused. He shifted down her body and started to ease her shirt up, kissing every inch of skin that was revealed.

Maria groaned slightly and arched her back to brush against him.

“Impatient tonight?” he rasped against her belly.

“Talkative tonight?” she responded and let her own hands wander to the hem of his tee shirt.

He smirked at her teasing tone and deftly removed her shirt. “Smartass,” he mumbled affectionately and rid her of her bra as well.

She laughed and wrapped her arms around him and she turned them in one quick move.

Michael’s eyebrows shot up when she took the dominant position and his hands settled on her thighs as he waited to see what she had planned next.

She waggled down to sit on his thighs and took both of his hands to pull his upper body up. “Lose this, baby,” she told him huskily and tugged on his tee shirt.

kismet: Lol, if Max can remember has yet to be seen, but yeah, sometimes weird/dangerous/emotional situations make you do things that you don’t do normally. :)

begonia9508: Lol, he was drugged, so it has yet to be seen if and how much he remembers. :)

Earth2Mama: Yeah, accidents are always combined with worries and sorrows, but we love our characters too much to harm them seriously. ;)

If Max remembers or Liz has to say it again has yet to be seen, lol.

Nah, M&L will be alright and ready when it’s time to ring the wedding bells.

Natalie36: We hope ya had a great Easter as well. ;) Yep, our couples are doin’ good!

mary mary: Hey, still with you? :)

Armageddon? We LOVE the movie… lol. Well we haven’t planned Armageddon, but something that will come just a bit close to it, lol.

Alien_Friend: Lol, thanks! We couldn’t harm them too much.

We bet Max would share his “drugs” with you. ;)

It’s true, good friends are important and rare.

sarammlover: It’s a big step, so it’s understandable that you have doubts now and then. Kyle and Tess will do the right thing, we count on them. ;)

Cardinal: Lol, we told Max your suggestion and he just grinned. ;)

Part 60

He removed the shirt and tossed it aside, shivering slightly as her voice washed over him.

Her hands wandered over his strong chest, followed by her heated gaze. “I definitely got the hottest husband around.”

His breath stuttered in his throat at the look in her eyes. She made him feel like he was everything she thought he was and that still amazed him.

She shook her head. “Good grief, Michael, I’m just getting all hot just from looking at you,” she laughed slightly.

He smiled and shifted beneath her, making sure she knew just how hot he was. He felt her knees grip his thighs in response and his fingers traced along the waistband of her jeans.

Maria leaned to the side, grabbing her glass and taking a sip from it while she pushed him back down on the blanket and watched him.

Michael was sure she was going to do her best to drive him crazy tonight. She was taking her time, drawing out every look, every touch, and making him wait.

“You look impatient,” she said matter-of-factly and slightly amused.

She was turning the tables on him, he thought. He shook his head and prayed for her to do something... anything!

“Tell me what you want me to do,” she told him as she placed her glass aside again.

His eyes darkened even further as he went over the many tantalizing options. He grinned when his mind kept coming back to one thing.

“I don't know if I like that grin...”

“Okay, well, it’s probably a lot more fun for me,” he admitted as he squirmed under her knowing gaze. “What? I’m a guy, sue me!”

“Yeah, you’re a guy alright,” she said him and stuck her tongue out at him.

“I’ll return the favor... before or after,” he offered with a filthy grin.

Her hands moved over his upper body until they reached the waistband of his jeans. “Guess it’s time to get rid of ‘em, huh?” she asked with a saucy grin, letting her palm slide over the jean-covered bulge in his pants.

“Oh, yeah,” he growled in agreement. Her touch turned him on like nothing else in the world.

She lifted her ass from his thighs and crawled further down, undoing his jeans and taking them with her. He helped her, pulling his feet up to get rid of them along with his socks.

He shook his head when she started to crawl back up over him. “Get rid of yours too,” he instructed throatily.

“Yeah?” she asked, playfully surprised before nodding slowly. “Okay.” Maria got to her feet slowly. She picked up her glass of wine again and started to walk around the room, very aware of his gaze on her. She stopped next to the stereo and turned it on, scanning through the radio stations until she found her favorite kind of music. “How about some music?” She smiled happily when she recognized the song playing.

Michael pushed himself up onto his elbows when she started to sway to the music, his dark eyes following her movements. She had to know what she did to him, there was no way it wasn’t obvious.

Maria glanced over her shoulder and smiled at Michael as he watched her, unable to hide his arousal. She walked back to him slowly, swaying her hips to the music. “Oh, you wanted me to take ‘em off, right?” she asked, pretending to remember while her free hand ran over the waistband of her jeans.

“Uh-huh.” And don’t drag it out, he begged silently.

“Alright,” she nodded and placed the glass on the counter. Her hands moved to the buttons of her jeans and she opened them with one quick move. Her heart did that crazy flip flop in her chest when she heard him taking a deep breath, giving her the necessarily confidence to stick with her plan. Her hips moved gently to the music while she turned around, facing him with her back to slide the tight pants over her slim legs. She was glad she had decided to wear very sexy panties today. He would like them, she thought with satisfaction.

“You’re easily the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” he whispered gruffly. He smiled at the panties, wondering where she managed to find such sexy articles of clothing.

“Sexy man needs a sexy woman,” she told him with a wink when she turned around again, only wearing her panties now.

“Maria,” he sat up a little straighter, resting his weight on his hands now. “You’re sexier than any woman has a right to be.” He grinned. “And you’re all mine.”

“You’re damn right about that,” she said happily.

He smiled and motioned for her to come closer.

“So there’s still something that needs to go,” she noticed as she moved back to him, nudging his boxers with her big toe.

“Looks like you’ve still got somethin’ that needs to go too,” he countered and made no move to get rid of his boxers.

“Uh-huh, but you’re the one who... requested something.”

“So... me first?” he asked and scrambled to strip his boxers off when she nodded. He resumed his earlier pose, resting on his elbows as he grinned at her. “All ready.”

“Uh-huh, I can see that,” she teased as she stepped over him so that she was straddling him.

“C’mon, baby,” he begged.

“Just trying to enjoy every second with you since I bet Tess won’t let us sleep in the same apartment tomorrow.”

That caught his attention and for a moment he forgot all about the demands his body was making known. “Um... what?”

“It’s the night before we get married,” she told him and moved down to sit on his legs again. “Traditionally, ya spend that night away from each other.”

“Well... yeah, if you’re a couple of virgins. Which we aren’t.”

She snorted. “No.”

“Then Tess can just take her traditions and shove ‘em where the sun don’t shine.”

“Don’t be mean,” she warned, taking his erection in her hand. “I kinda wanna do that as well.”

“What? Why?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know, just because.”

“Okay, I can’t really think straight when you’ve got your hand on my dick so we’ll come back to this later,” he said, motioning for her to continue.

She shook her head in amusement, adding pressure with her hand while she leaned forward to kiss along the line of hair on his lower belly. Her own long blonde hair tickled his sides.

Michael closed his eyes as her touches sent fire rushing through his veins.

Maria’s mouth wandered further down where her hand was. She let her tongue slide over his length a few times, before taking him in fully.

His breath hissed between his clenched teeth and he felt his eyes roll back in his head.

Her movements become faster, her lips gripping him tighter. She knew it wouldn’t take long for him to let go in this position.

He knew he was close and his left hand clenched tightly in the blanket as he reached down to cradle the back of her head with his other hand. “M’ria,” he warned hoarsely when he felt himself slipping over the edge.

She placed one hand over his, squeezing it lightly to show him she was okay. He groaned when he came and the sound made her shiver while her mouth still caressed him.

Michael drew in panting breaths as he waited for his heartbeat to return to normal. “Damn, girl, you still know how to just about make me black out with a blowjob,” he said as he looked down at her.

She smiled and crawled up over him. “Yeah? That’s cool, ‘cause I haven’t done it for over two years now.”

He snorted and kissed her, tasting himself on her tongue. “You haven’t lost the touch,” he assured her with a wink.

“You neither.”

“You’re so sure about that?” he teased. His fingertips slid between the waistband of her panties and her skin and he grinned. “Bet we’re about to find out.”

She felt the heat rushing through her body from his simple touch. “Yeah.”

He chuckled and skimmed the panties off of her as he reversed their positions. He tossed them away and kissed each of her breasts before slipping down and trailing a line of kisses to her skin. He paused at her belly button, rimming it with his tongue before dipping it inside and grinning at her.

“Who’s teasing now?”

“Just enjoying the appetizers on the way to the feast,” he said with a wink.

She raised her lower body to brush against him. “C’mon.”

Michael rubbed his chin against her mound before shifting back and nudging her legs further apart so he could settle more comfortably between them. He let his fingers play between her slick folds and he smiled when he heard her breath hitch in her throat.

Maria closed her eyes and licked her lips, waiting impatiently for the real touch.

Michael smiled when he sensed her impatience and lowered his mouth to let his tongue tease her. Her fingers clenched in his hair in warning and he slipped his tongue inside to flick over her clit.

“Michael,” she breathed out. It felt so good to be able to say his name again without feeling pain and sadness.

He could feel the tension drawing her body tighter with each pass over that bundle of nerves. He eased off, sliding his tongue back and sucking on her clit to push her over the edge.

Maria let go of his hair and gripped the blanket instead, digging her nails deep in it when she came.

Michael ran his hands over her thighs to soothe her, pressing kisses against her skin. As she started to breathe normally again he crawled up her body to settle over her with his weight on his forearms. “Love ya,” he whispered as he kissed her closed eyelids.

Her arms came around him tightly. “Don’t go away.”

“Where would I go?” he asked, taking her left hand and pressing a kiss to her ring finger. “You’ve got me for the rest of our lives, baby.”

She smiled tiredly. “I know, just wanted to hear it again.”

“I’ll tell you every single day if you want.”

“I bet Tony and Nick will appreciate that when you’re up on the mountain,” she said, giggling quietly.

“Tony won’t have any room to talk,” he snorted as he reached for one edge of the blanket to pull it up over them.

She snuggled up closer towards him, chuckling when she felt him pressed against her and somebody seemed to be anything but tired.

He shrugged and grinned unrepentantly. “I know that’s why you decided I got to go first... ‘cause you knew I’d get it up again by the time you got off.”

“Hey, I’m not that calculating,” she denied.

“Um-hmm,” he hummed against her skin. “Two for the price of one? Weren’t countin’ on that?”

“You make it sound like a trade,” she said, poking an elbow into his chest.

He chuckled and shook his head. “I’m just teasin’, baby.”

“Well, anyway... since you already pointed it out, what’re ya waitin’ for?” She nudged him with her backside.

“Yeah, probably oughta do somethin’ about that, huh?” He bit his lip and pressed a kiss to her shoulder.

She took his hand from her hip and pulled it further down to rest on her lower stomach. “Yeah.”

His hand travelled lower as he nudged his knee between her thighs. “Got any suggestions?” She was gonna kill him if he kept playing around he thought.

“Michael,” she complained.

“Hmm?” he wiggled the arm under her body around until he could free his hand up to cup her breast in his palm.

Her hand wandered along his side where he was pressed up against her and she reached between them to tease him.

He snuffled against her shoulder and his erection slipped between her thighs to nudge her.

Maria lifted her leg slightly to allow him better access. Her hand slipped between them to caress herself since he was still taking things slow.

He pushed forward to enter her and his hand settled on her hip, caressing her for a moment before moving to cover her hand and still her movements. She made a sound of annoyance and he brushed her hand aside to take her place, his fingers and hips moving in sync.

She lifted her arm up and reached back to let her hand run along the back of his neck. She pulled his face closer as she turned her head to kiss him deeply.

Michael heard the whimper pulled from her throat when he angled his hips to hit the spot and gently pinched her clit. His tongue tangled with hers as he thrust deeper and increased the speed of the movements of his fingers.

His other arm came around her in a tight and safe grip. She knew it was a sign that he was just as close as she was again. The kiss was broken when she came, gasping for air desperately.

His rhythm became stilted as he raced over the edge and came seconds behind her. “Hell,” he muttered breathlessly. “I think it’s safe to say neither one of us has lost it.” He pressed a kiss to her neck and rubbed his nose back and forth against her shoulder.

She laughed. “That gonna be your vow?”

He snorted. “You want my vow?” he asked as he shifted so he could tug her over onto her back. “I vow to love you a little more every day of my life, I vow to do everything possible to make sure you know just how much I love you even though I suck at words most of the time, and I vow that we’re gonna have mind-blowing sex until we’re both too old to do it anymore.” He grinned. “How’s that?”

She blinked back a tear. “Sounds good,” she admitted thickly.

He nodded in satisfaction. “Cool.”

“C’mere, Mr. Guerin,” she said, pulling him into her arms.

“Gonna put me to bed now, Mrs. Guerin?”

“Uh-huh, tomorrow’s gonna be busy.”

“So, were you serious about us not spendin’ tomorrow night together?”

“Yeah, I think I wanna do that.”

He grumbled under his breath as he settled more fully against her.

*****

“This is so boring, why don’t they just let us go already?” Liz complained and tried to get comfortable in her hospital bed. She’d been up since seven that morning and time was passing painfully slow.

“Watching the clock isn’t helping either,” Max said with a smirk. He knew his girlfriend hated being stuck in the hospital even though she was feeling okay again. She still had a few tense muscles and bruises, but other than that she was as good as new. Liz wasn’t the type who enjoyed a lot of relaxing and hanging out, she needed action. Tess and Maria were probably already busy with planning the wedding again and it was killing her to just stay in bed and wait.

“I wanna go home, Max,” she complained and stood up to walk over to his bed. “The silence here is killin’ me. My best friend’s gonna get married tomorrow and there’re probably a thousand things for her to do today and I can’t help her with any of it.”

“She has Tess,” he told her. “She’s like the wedding nazi.”

Liz snorted. “Yeah, see, another reason why I should be there and not here.”

He was about to say something, but closed his mouth again when the telephone started to ring and Liz ran back to her bed to get it. “Hello?”

Maria smiled when she heard Liz’s voice, easily detecting the impatience in it. It was a clear indication that she was okay. “Hey, chica,” she greeted. “How’re you feelin’ this morning?”

“M’ria, come and get me, I’m dying here, it’s soooo boring,” Liz whined.

“Has the doctor released you yet?” Obviously he or she hadn’t because otherwise Liz would’ve made her escape already.

“They said we’ll be released tomorrow! TOMORROW!!! Can you believe that?”

“What? Why’re they holdin’ you over for an entire day?”

“I don’t know, they just said they wanna keep us in until tomorrow morning. Not sure why.”

Maria snorted. “They probably know that if they release you right now you’re not gonna go home and get some rest.”

Liz sat down on her bed, frustrated. “I’m sorry that I’m ruining your wedding preparations.”

“Elizabeth Parker, you stop that right now! You’re not ruining anything! I’m just happy you guys are okay.”

“It’s still totally stupid to sit around here. I wanna go shopping with you an’ help out with all the stuff ya gotta do today.”

Maria bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing at her friend’s pouty tone. “Oh, c’mon, we’ll have plenty of time for shoppin’ later.”

Liz smiled a little. “Oh, you haven’t heard the news yet, Max and I are gonna take the apartment we looked at yesterday.” She glanced at her boyfriend with a grin. “We’re gonna move up here, girl,” she told her friend excitedly.

Michael hadn’t been paying much attention to the conversation, busy scanning through the morning paper and wondering if there was any way to get out of spending his entire day being dragged around from store to store and forced to try on different tuxes until they found one that the women felt was satisfactory. He nearly jumped out of his skin when Maria suddenly squealed and started to do her happy dance.

“You guys are really moving here! Liz, that’s great! We’re gonna have so much fun!”

He rolled his eyes and turned back to his paper when the conversation suddenly turned to furniture shopping and interior decorating and he frowned at the coffee he hadn’t realized he had spilled all over it.

*****

Wedding shopping had come to a halt when the guys had decided they were hungry and weren’t going into one more store until they had eaten. The women had just rolled their eyes and given in gracefully, knowing that the men were going to be even more annoying if they didn’t get their way on this. They had agreed on a restaurant that Tony recommended and as lunch was coming to an end the conversation once again turned to wedding preparations.

Michael shrugged when Maria asked him what he thought about the last three tuxes he had tried on. “It’s a tux, Maria, they all look the same to me,” he answered as he cut the last of his chicken fried steak into a couple of bites.

She just shook her head at him. “Are you being deliberately obtuse?”

He glanced at her. “Huh?”

“I still have to look for a dress.”

“Okay.” He didn’t understand what one thing had to do with the other. “I’m good with any of the tuxes.”

Tess rolled her eyes at him. “She can’t just walk in and pick up a dress. These things take time and what we have is already limited. You cannot rush a girl when she’s trying to find that perfect dress.”

He shrugged, his expression clueless. “When was I rushin’ anyone?”

“No, I think it’s the complete lack of haste that Tess is referring to,” Amy said as she took a sip of her lemon water.

Michael was about to protest when his soon-to-be mother-in-law continued, turning the conversation to her husband.

“Carson, you’ll take the boys to the tux shop we discussed earlier. You know what will be acceptable.”

The man nodded. ‘You know what will be acceptable’ meant that once he had several ‘acceptable’ options picked out they would wait at the tux shop until she arrived to tell him whether or not he was correct.

“That way you boys will be out of our hair while we’re looking for Maria’s dress.”

Michael shot a quick glance at Tony, who just rolled his eyes. Ungh, spending time alone with his best friend was one thing, but adding Carson... the man was still not his favorite company.

“You guys will remember to pick out tuxes for Max and Kyle as well, right?” Tess asked, shoving her last bite into her mouth. Kyle was staying with Max and Liz in the hospital right now, keeping them company.

Michael just looked at her and held his left arm up, showing off the numbers written on the back of his wrist. “Kinda hard to forget since you wrote their sizes on my arm.”

She grinned at him innocently. “You’re so gonna love me, Guerin, just wait until we move here.”

Maria’s eyes widened. “You already decided?”

Tess shrugged. “My doubts disappeared as soon as we got the call from the hospital last night. I need you crazy guys in my life!”

“Great, now there’s somethin’ to look forward to,” he mumbled. He winked to let Tess know he was just teasing. He was glad that Maria’s friends had decided to move up here because he knew their first couple of years were gonna be difficult with him away so much.

Maria smacked his thigh with the back of her hand as she nodded. “That was scary,” she admitted. “I can’t even imagine if somethin’ like that had happened and we lived so far away from each other. And I can’t believe the four of you are moving here. You’re all sure that’s what you wanna do?”

“Uh-huh, but we’re gonna discuss this later. For now we concentrate on your wedding!”

Amy smiled. Her daughter was happier than she had ever seen her. She glanced at her husband, catching his gaze as he watched their daughter as well.

Carson nodded at his wife. Yeah, he had been wrong and it was time to start making things right. Dinner the night before had been a place to start but his work was far from finished.

Michael smiled when a bridal magazine appeared and the conversation was quickly limited to “oohs” and “ahs” as the girls flipped through the pages, practically drooling over the dresses. Somehow he had a feeling none of them would appreciate his vocalization of that thought. He knew the dress wouldn’t matter to him other than knowing that she had the one that she was happy with. He’d probably never remember what it looked like because he already knew his focus tomorrow night would be on her and not on what she was wearing.

He looked over at Amy when she pulled her cell phone out and made a call and his eyebrows lifted in surprise when he realized she was talking to the owner of the bridal shop that was next on the girls’ list. He listened as she rattled off pertinent information such as Maria’s dress size, her height, and a list of item numbers that he assumed referred to dresses Maria was interested in.

“Okay,” she said when she ended the call. “She’ll be ready for us in about half an hour.”

“Say goodbye to you husband, we need to go,” Tess gave her friend a little shove.

“I’ll go take care of the check,” Carson said as he picked up the leather folder their waiter had placed at the end of the table. “Give you two a few moments to say goodbye without my presence.”

“Yeah, I think if you two are about to get all mushy I’ll go wait outside,” Tony said as he pushed back from the table and stood up. His right hand settled on Michael’s shoulder as he leaned over to speak to him in a lowered voice that was teasing. “I can live with you bein’ whipped so long as I don’t have to witness it all the time.”

“Uh-huh,” Michael said doubtfully. He’d bet Vanessa only needed a few more days before Tony started to act the same way.

Maria smiled at him when everyone else had suddenly left the table and it was only him and her. “You think you’ll survive an afternoon with my dad and Tony?” she asked, sitting down in his lap with her arms around his neck.

“It’s just a few hours,” he said dismissively. “Spendin’ the afternoon with your dad isn’t high on my list of things to do, but I’ll survive it. Tony’s a good buffer and if things get too awkward he'll step in, so don’t rush on my account.”

“I still can’t believe he’s really here, ya know... and supporting us.”

His arms around her waist tightened momentarily. “Yeah, that’s one I never saw comin’.”

“They finally seem to see that you’re the best man in the world,” she told him happily.

He chuckled. “I don’t know about all that, but at least they’re not tryin’ to come between us anymore.”

“I don’t think my life could get any better right now.”

Her eyes sparkled with happiness and he smiled at her. “That makes two of us, baby.”

“I love you,” she whispered against his lips while she kissed him.

He smiled and nipped her bottom lip playfully. “Love you too.”

“Maria,” Tess hissed from near the entrance and waved. “Come on now!”

Michael grinned. “She’s gonna be trouble.”

“Yeah... but she’s just crazy, so be good to her,” Maria got up from his lap and took his hand to pull him up as well. “Come on, we’re still busy.”

“Always good policy to keep the crazy people happy,” he agreed and stood up to follow her outside.

“Alright, let’s go girls,” Maria cheered happily when they were back on the streets again.

“Alright, let’s go guys,” Tony yelled in a cheerfully mocking voice as he shot a grin at Maria.

“And here I’ve been thinkin’ Nick was the embarrassing one,” Michael muttered.

Caron walked to his car, nodding at his wife as she shot him a warning glare.

Tony snickered when he caught the small exchange between the older couple. “And I thought Guerin was one whipped puppy.”

“Shut up,” Michael hissed. The last thing he needed was a pissed Carson DeLuca.

Carson smirked as he slid in behind the wheel. “He doesn’t understand the delicate balance that goes into keeping a DeLuca woman happy,” he stated.

Michael smirked at the older man. Wow, he can be funny, he thought, surprised.

“I don’t know about you boys, but one tux is pretty much the same as the next to me and I have no intention of standin’ around a formal wear store tryin’ on a dozen of ‘em. It’s gonna be hours before Amy comes to check on us so what would you say to goin’ out for a drink first?”

“Hell yeah, let’s do that,” Tony agreed from the backseat.

Michael glanced at Carson, trying to decipher the man’s suggestion. Was it just a test? he wondered.

The older man turned to look at the man who was barely a day from being his son-in-law and shrugged. “All I can do is try from here on out.”

The younger man nodded and gestured out of the window. “About a mile from here there’s a nice small pub.” He would just go along and see how it played out.
