Summary: A trip to the big city has two of the Roswellians bringing another one back with them who is vital in their need to prepare for the time when Khivar will show up on Earth. Without her it may be a lost cause.

*Roswell as we know it is mostly Roswell. All events stayed mostly the same with the absences of Maria. Also, Tess still came back with Zan, but her blowing up the Air Force Base didn’t put the agents onto our Pod Squad so Graduation didn’t happen like we saw either.

Part 1

The world had long ago changed from something familiar and safe.

It had been years since she learned about aliens and ran from the FBI.

That wasn't the first time her world view was shattered.

It was far from the last.

The first time it happen it was within her own family.

Her dad picked up leaving her and her mom to fend off the big bad world on their own.

Since then nobody has gotten past her blocks. Well almost nobody.

Alex and Liz where already safely behind them by the time she erected them.

She hardly trusts other people.

Then Liz was asking her to trust a whole other life form. Ha.

But she did. She managed to pull it together and loosen her blocks.

Long enough to fear for her life.

Long enough to fall in love.

Long enough to lose her childhood friend and with him, the rest of her innocence.

Long enough to start to worry about somebody else she loved leaving her.

Not long enough to be left though.

She left first this time.

She was the one that broke his heart this time.

She watched it fall from her grasp and shattered into tiny little pieces.

She couldn't watch any more then that though. So a week later she followed after Billy Darden.

Not because he could ever be to her what Michael was.

She followed him because he held the key to finding Maria again.

That Maria girl.

She had been lost for a long time.

Before Maria had turned to leave Michael has whispered in an anguished voice, "Will you come back to me?"

Maria wanted to laugh.

Of course she would come back to him, he held her heart. Had since the minute they were stuck in that dingy motel room and discovered they were both looking for something better than Roswell, New Mexico.

She wasn't going to ask for it back.

She didn't want it back.

There was nobody on this or any other planet she would ever love like she loved Michael Guerin.

She just hoped it wasn't too late.

She hoped when she came back he would still be holding her heart, that he didn't let it fall and shatter to a million tiny pieces like she just did to his.

Because for a long time she had known they had both found their better than Roswell, New Mexico.

It was with each other.

Always would be.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Maria was packing up after her show, nodding goodbye to her band mates without paying much attention. Maria DeLuca had made it. Not worldwide famous like the dreams of a ten year old, but she was very well known. Very well off. Tickets where hard to come by in the small theaters she sung at.

At the knock at the door she answer distracted, "What is it Traci? I'll be out in five minutes."

When the door swung open she froze.

That door was locked.

She was sure of it.

Slowly, she looked up to find none other than Isabel Evans and Kyle Valenti standing before her. Oh. Wait Liz's last phone call said it was Isabel Valenti now.

Jesse had left with the discovery of aliens in his very own bedroom.

It broke Isabel too, the way Liz tells it. It took three whole years for Isabel to even look at another guy again. With the exception of course of Max, Michael, and Kyle.

They were already in the known and hadn't rejected her.

It almost broke Kyle's heart when she started dating. He had been there for Isabel through all the heartbreak and tears. He had fallen in love with the Ice Queen.

And that's what Maria saw standing in her door frame.

A once again long, blonde haired Ice Queen giving her the dirtiest look known to mankind.

Or alien for that matter.

Liz says it took about three weeks for Isabel to realize Kyle was in love with her and withdrawn because she was throwing herself at all these random guys. They started off slow. Two years later, they were married. A year after that they had a beautiful little girl, Haley Marie, with Isabel's blonde hair and Kyle's blue eyes. If Maria recalled she was about two now.

Maria had no idea how long it was before Kyle gently pushed Isabel inside and shut the door behind them.

"Hey Ria."

Maria sat unsteadily. Still staring at the pair. Thrilled beyond anything in the world to see them, but horrified just as much.

Why where they here?

Was something wrong with Liz?

Or oh God Michael?

Why wasn't Isabel yelling at her for destroying Michael?

Maybe he wasn't destroyed. Perhaps he moved on and had a family of his own now.

Maria didn't listen when Liz tried to tell her what Michael was up to. Right now she was wishing she had paid more attention.

"Listen Ria, I know you ran off to escape the Alien Abyss."

Isabel huffed and busied herself by looking around, clearly there against her will and disgusted with Maria.

"NO."

Kyle paused unsure what the no meant. The first word she uttered earned her a glare from the Ice Queen though.

"I...I didn't leave to escape." She was cut off by Isabel's malicious laughter, "Yeah, right."

"Iz."

Kyle's whispered plea had silenced her.

She after all knew what was at stake here.

"I had to...I felt like I was drowning Kyle. Everything I used to be got lost in favor of their needs. I had needs too. Needs and dreams and staying in Roswell, I would have never seen any of them come true."

Isabel stood up furious, "What about Michael's needs and DREAMS. You walked away from him when the only dream he had left was you and having a family with you. Do you have ... do you have any idea what that did to him. When he woke up and you were just gone. Gone. What it did to all of us.

God. For weeks we were all a mess. Trying to get flashes, dream walking you, talking to Amy, you didn't tell your mom where you were going. How the hell were we supposed to know if you were kidnapped or just left on your own because you were a heartless b..."

"Isabel that's enough."

By now both Isabel and Maria were in tears. "I called Liz as soon as I got here."

Isabel laughed a sound that lacked any joy, "Yeah, two months later."

Isabel turned and busied herself organizing things.

Kyle took over, "Ria did you do what you ran away here to accomplish."

Maria looked up confused.

"Michael said you had to find that Maria girl. Who you used to be. Did you do that?"

Hesitantly Maria nodded; it wasn't what she thought it would be.

How could it be when she was surrounded by strangers? Not a single person her knew her a fraction as much as anyone in Roswell.

She wasn't an idiot. When she was riding buses to get here she knew it wouldn’t be what she was hoping it would. Not the way she was going about it.

From the first time she stepped on a stage seven years ago she knew she had made a mistake.

She was too stubborn to go home though. Not until she tried her hardest to make this work.

"Can you come home now then? Is there anyway you can blend this life with what you used to have."

After eight years they were coming to ask her to come home. When it was obvious Isabel didn't even want to be here at all.

"Why?"

She already knew her answer though. Had known it since these two walked into the door and she was happier then she'd been in the past eight years despite the fact that they were angry with her.

"Why. Well because, our mom misses you and our little brother will need an older sister to ask about girls someday. Because Liz is pregnant again and cries everyday since her best friend in the whole world isn't there, again, to experience it with her. Because if Evans comes to me one more time to talk about Liz I may just knock the King onto his ass. Because Isabel loves shopping and Liz's isn't a huge fan of the trips to the mall like you are. Because I miss you and so does everyone else in Roswell."

Maria gulped trying desperately to remember if Michael still lived there.

Maria jumped when Isabel spoke softly a tone filled with so much hurt.

"Because Michael shut down after you left. Because he doesn't use his powers any more and when he does he lacks the control he gained around you. Because if I have to see that pained, broken look in his eyes one more time I might just fall apart and not be able to get back up. And then when Khivar comes, because we know he is, it will be Max, alone, trying to save the world. Because Maria after all that you've done for us. I'm here to ask you to do more."

With blurred vision Maria threw herself at the Ice Queen and they sobbed.

Sobbed for all the years lost.

All the days wasted.

Every hour ignored.

Kyle watched his own eyes watering.

After what seemed like forever Maria pulled back and wiped at her eyes. She gave Isabel a watery smile. Isabel returned it, all the hurt put aside for now. They had a common goal.

Kyle watched amazed as the sobbing mess turned into the hurricane as she ran around frantically throwing things in her bags and pulling out her cell phone and dialing a number. Then as far as Kyle was concerned she was talking gibberish. About breaking contracts and canceling the last two shows, about public appearances. All kinds of things that Kyle decided to finally tune out.

At some point Maria stopped packing and was pacing back and forth on the phone waving her hands in the air and yelling. Isabel got up and continued the packing for her.

Kyle pulled out his own cell phone and dialed the familiar number.

"Hey, it's me....yeah we found her. She's coming with us. Yeah Iz told her the truth. The basics anyways."

Kyle listened for a few minutes then whispered back when he was sure Maria wasn't listening, "Ah yeah no, we didn't tell her about her. Iz said... fine but if she doesn't come because of her, you get to explain that to your wife. Later Evans."

He hung up noticing Isabel and Maria both staring at him.

"Her who?"

Kyle flinched. "Iz, Max thinks we should tell Maria about Serena."

Maria's eyebrows drew together. "Serena? As in Future Max's Serena?"

Kyle nodded, "We think so."

"What about her?"

Isabel sighed, "On Antar, her and Rath had this thing."

Maria's frown grew deeper, "Thing?"

"They were in love."

"Oh."

"Look, Ria it doesn't mean anything here. I mean Zan and Ava were supposedly in love too and look how that ended up."

Maria nodded distractedly having heard all about Tess's return with baby Zan.

"So Max wanted you to tell me about her because..."

"Becausetheylivetogether."

It took a second to understand, but once she did the pain was sharp and instantaneous.

The shock of it made her body tremble. She was grateful she was sitting.

"Oh."

She reached out for something to steady herself further.

"Ria..."

Kyle traveled off, how was he supposed to explain this?

Isabel's voice was stern, commanding.

They couldn’t lose Maria now not when they were so close to getting her back in their lives. Even if Khivar’s approach wasn’t imminent, they had missed her deeply. She had been away from home for much too long.

They needed her.

Michael needed her.

With or without the threat of Khivar looming over their heads.

"Maria. Listen to me. It doesn't mean anything. Serena came to town and needed a place to stay. She was staying with Max and Liz for a while but then Becca was born. It just made sense for her to go to Michael's because he had the extra room. Michael stopped talking to Max and me a long time ago Maria, Serena's the only way we know that's he's eating and sleeping nowadays."

Maria was off in her own world. Four years. They've been living together for four years. That's how old Max and Liz's daughter was. So much could happen in four years behind closed doors.

"You're still going to come with us right?"

Maria looked into the pleading eyes of Kyle, the desperation obvious in Isabel's entire being.

"Yeah, I'll go with you to Roswell."

Isabel's relief was palpable as was Kyle's.

"Let's go then our plane leaves in an hour."

"I don’t' have a..."

"We got you one."

"That sure of your self huh Iz?"

Isabel smiled.

"No, that sure of your love for Michael."

Maria blushed and nodded. Kyle picked up the bags and led the way out the door. Isabel followed after him Maria bringing up the rear.

When she got to the door she paused before softly closing the door.

As it clicked in place she said goodbye to her lifestyle.

She had found that Maria girl.

But lost her heart in the process.

It wasn't worth it and it was time to go back and get it.

TBC...

Part 2

As the plane started its decent Maria could feel her world tilting once again. It bobbled back and forth trying to determine the new perspective it would throw at her.

She sighed and closed her eyes against the sight of the desert sand and familiar sunset.

Michael was living with someone.

Someone who wasn't her.

Someone he loved in another lifetime.

Why was she doing this again?

Oh right she was an idiot.

Still.

She opened her eyes when Kyle touched her arm. "We're here."

"Wonderful."

A sudden thought occurred to her, "Does he know I'm coming? Does anybody?"

Kyle shook his head no as he answered, "I called Max, told him. He probably told Liz, but that's it. For now at least...Right?"

It was added as an after thought. Maria was going to stay wasn't she? Long enough for others to have to know she was here. Kyle sure as hell hoped so.

"So where's Haley?"

She effectively ignored Kyle’s question.

Isabel lit up at the mention of her beautiful daughter. Kyle smiled too.

"She's with her grandparents. The Valenti's."

Maria still found it hard to believe they were married, let alone had a two year old daughter.

It was almost as shocking at Liz and Max now having, technically a third child. Liz having forced Max to keep baby Zan no matter how difficult it might be for them. He would have regretted it his whole life if he had given Zan away.

For a while Jim and Amy had taken him away for safety, but once things settled down with the Air Force after Tess, they brought him back to Max and Liz.

Liz says it was a challenge at first. To see Zander and not think of how he was the result of so much hurt to her. But then he'd smile at her or grip her finger or call her mama. And then all Liz saw was this beautiful baby boy who was a part of Max. After that realization how could she not love him entirely?

Now as Kyle had said Liz was pregnant again.

Sure Maria thought it was shocking.

But more shocking then that was the wave of jealousy that hit her when she thought of it because unlike Liz she wasn't married to the love of her life and carrying around his child. Then the shame at such a traitorous thought about her best friend followed.

Maria shook her head of all the confusing emotions.

Of all the painful memories.

She would focus only on the good.

Talking to her mom.

Seeing her little brother again.

Reuniting with her best friend after eight long years.

Michael.

No matter what it would bring, being around Michael again was a good thing. Maria was sure of at least that much.

"So we thought we'd bring you home first let you get settled in. Then Max and Liz are having everyone over for dinner tonight. What do you think?"

"Sounds good." Neither noticed that Maria was only half listening still distracted with her thoughts about Michael.

"What about Michael? Will he be there?"

She didn't miss the cautious glance they exchanged over her head, "Probably not, but ah...Serena will be."

Maria stopped and stared at Isabel.

Kyle pulled her arm and they continued moving.

"Is that going to be a problem because I'm sure Liz can call..." Isabel was cut off by Maria,

"No. No problem at all. Why would I have a problem with that."

She didn't miss the glances the second time either.

"If you say so Ria."

"I do. Say so. It'll be fine. Awkward but fine."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

She was a foot in the door when a four foot, blonde haired, blue eye little brother rammed into her tackling her to the floor.

"Oomph."

"Coby!!! What did I tell you about that?"

"Sorry ma!!!"

He stood up smiling, helping Maria to her feet.

"Hey Ria!!! I missed you. I'm glad your home. You'll never guess what happen in school today. Oh and I have to tell you about baseball practice that we had the other day."

"Whoa whoa, slow down there kido. I'm here for a while we can get all caught up. Don't worry. Can I say hi to mom and dad?"

The seven year old rolled his eyes at his old sister, "FINE."

Then stomped off. When he got to the end of the hallway he spun around again,

"Hi Kyle, hey Izzie. I'm glad you’re back too."

Kyle laughed, "Yeah sure you are bud."

Isabel smiled and slipped off her shoes before running upstairs to find Haley asleep in the guest room.

Maria approached the kitchen slowly with Kyle right behind her. She found her mom steadily chopping vegetables.

"Hi mom."

Amy looked up and Maria noticed the tear tracks down her cheeks."

"Oh mom. I'm sorry. So sorry."

And then they were a tangled mess in the middle of the kitchen. Kyle took the liberty to turn the stove off and went out in search of his dad in the garage.

Jim Valenti heard the wailing from his workspace in the garage and was headed towards the back door just as Kyle opened it.

"She's home?"

Kyle nodded his head.

"Thank God."

Kyle smiled and hugged his dad, "How was Haley?"

"Perfect as always."

Kyle rolled his eyes at the obvious lie. Haley was far from perfect. She was every bit a terror as the terrible twos claimed she would be. Probably twice as bad because she had an edge the other kids didn't.

When they wanted something and their parents said no; they simple threw a tantrum.

When Haley wanted something and Kyle or Isabel said no; Haley just used her powers to get it anyway.

That was how Amy discovered there were real aliens in Roswell.

Despite the dinner they were going to have at Max and Liz's, Amy forced all of them to sit and eat a little bit of pie with them while they had dinner. Coby was less then pleased with this fact since he had to eat his gross vegetables before he got his pie.

Isabel, Kyle, and Jim mostly just listened as Maria and Amy went on and on about every single topic they could think of. They would have watched them go on all night if they didn't have to be at Max and Liz's house by eight.

It was Isabel who coughed, looking at Kyle who then stood regretfully.

"Amy, we have to go or we'll be late. We'll drop Maria back off when we come to pick up Haley tonight, before we head home."

He chanced a look at Maria to make sure she was alright with this. She smiled and nodded.

Two minutes later they were turning at the end of the block headed towards Max and Liz's.

It was the most tense twelve minute car ride Kyle had ever been a part of.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Isabel rang the door bell while Maria stood behind her and Kyle.

Max opened the door smiling. He gave his sister a hug and then shook Kyle's hand. They both moved past him into the house to find Liz picking Zan up off the coach to bring him up to bed. Kyle walked over easily slipping him from her grasp and taking him to his room.

Isabel and Liz smiled at each other, "Is she..."

Isabel smiled at Liz and gently nodded. Tears immediately came to Liz's eyes as she ran off after Kyle. Isabel shook her head and sat down on the couch.

Once Kyle and Isabel had moved past him, Max just stared at Maria, not actually believe she was standing right in front of him after so long. Finally she spoke,

"Come on girlfriend you gonna let me in? It's really cold out here." Before she even finished Max had her inside the house wrapped in an enormous hug.

"Maria we missed you so much."

Tears fell from her eyes.

"I miss you guys too. Sooo much."

As Max pulled back, Maria saw Liz coming down the stairs guided down by Kyle obviously against her will. Max stepped aside as Kyle dragged her to a foot in front of Maria.

He stopped and turned back to join Isabel.

Max looked back and forth between Liz and Maria staring at each other in disbelief, sadness, and utter joy. He leaned in close to Liz.

"Hug her."

That was all it took before Liz threw her self into Maria's arms and Kyle was able to witness the third crying fest of the day.

Max went over to join Isabel and Kyle asking them how their trip to New York was. Five minutes later, Liz and Maria were still in front of the door hugging and talking when the doorbell rang.

Liz felt Maria stiffen underneath her grasp.

"Ria?"

Bright green eyes met pools of brown and an understanding based on a lifetime of friendship passed in a second.

"Chica..."

"It's okay Maria. You'll love her. I promise."

Maria looked doubtful and slightly hurt.

"Trust me Ria. Serena's like Isabel when it comes to Michael. Sisterly."

"But they loved each other."

"Yeah, they did. But now he loves you."

For the first time Maria allowed herself to hope.

"Still?"

Liz chuckled, "Ria that boy will always love you. Only you."

The others stood up and Liz swung the door open after a nod from Maria.

"Liz I swear to god if I have to deal with that boneheaded neanderthal for one more... oh...hi"

"Serena I'd like you to meet my bestest friend in the whole world, Maria DeLuca. Maria this is..." Liz trailed off as Serena flung herself at Maria.

"...Serena."

Maria was too shocked to do anything but hug the woman as she lunged at her. The shock only continued as she heard what Serena was saying.

"OH MY GOD!!! Thank you for coming back with them. You have no idea how much it means to us. TO ME. YOU ARE AN AMAZING PERSON!!! I have no idea how you did it, but please do it again. HE’S INTORLERABLE LIKE THIS. YOU HAVE TO FIX IT. I can't deal with him any more. No sane person should have to. Not that you're not sane or anything like that, but you know what I mean, you love him so that has to count for something. You must have like immunity from the way he's behaving right. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!"

By this time Kyle and Max were laughing hysterically at Serena's antics. If the situation wasn't so serious and Isabel didn't know firsthand what Serena was talking about she might have laughed too. Liz was just too shocked like Maria to do anything other than stare. Never in the five years she's known Serena has she behaved like that.

When it seemed to Maria that Serena was done she hesitantly pulled back.

"It's nice to meet you Serena."

It was said with hesitation.

Doubt clearly evident in her tone.

It caused Serena to pause.

For the first time she looked into Maria's eyes, seeming to read her very soul.

"Maria trust me. I don't love him in this life. I think you're the only person in the universe who could love him like he deserves now. And if you don't trust me, trust him. Trust his feelings for you."

Maria didn't know what was more shocking.

The rambling psycho that lunged at her, or the speed at which she changed from almost comical to dead serious.

Maria only nodded her head slowly, not trusting herself at this point for anything else.

"On that note. Max I believe the pizzas are done. Shall we?"

Part 3

Pizza was finished two hours ago and the sounds coming from the Evans’ living room were all one would hope for with a happy reunion.

Max was getting up to get more drinks for everyone when the front door crashed open.

He raised his hand on instinct even as the shock of seeing Michael washed over him.

It had been over two month since his brother sought him out and even before then he wasn’t looking too well.

He looked worse now.

He had dark circles around his eyes.

His face covered in facial hair.

His clothes were hanging off him.

Michael got straight to the point, ignoring the pang at the distance between his brother after so long.

“Where is she?”

How was Max supposed to know Michael really meant Serena.

He wasn’t a mind reader, so he had no idea that he was sending Michael into the living room for a shock of a lifetime.

Max’s lack of awareness would once again change Michael’s life like that Maria girl had done so many years ago when she walked away and never came back.

Max pointed towards the living room and slowly followed Michael as he stomped over there, ignoring the two sleeping children as he rose his voice,

“What the HELL did you do with my METALLICA CDs!?!?”

Serena was shocked because Michael had done nothing more then grunt in her general direction for the past week and a half.

Kyle and Liz were shocked because Michael was animated, granted it was angry animation, but it sure as hell beat the lackluster shell they’ve grown to know the past eight years.

Isabel was shocked because of the volume, because there was an angry spark in Michael’s eye, because in a second she knew Michael would become aware of something they all already knew.

Maria was there.

An arms length away, but a distance that was still as wide as the country.

Michael was still staring furiously at Serena; he briefly noticed Isabel, Liz and Kyle in his peripheral vision.

It was their stillness that had him turning towards her.

Maria was in awe.

From the moment the door slammed open and her senses became overwhelmed with Michael vibes.

The yelling.

The anger.

Then lastly the awareness.

Maria watched it all. Soaking it all in like a starving person would a feast.

He finally turned all the way to meet her eyes.

Bright, emerald green met deep, dark brown.

As she stared into his eyes the emotional vibes hit her again.

Stronger now that she could see the emotions spilling from his eyes.

First there was joy.

The joy was brief, quickly pushed out by anger a crushing amount of anger.

It got worse after that though.

The pain.

Maria saw the pain Isabel spoke of.

She couldn’t breath.

It was too much pain.

Too much for one person: alien or human.

After the pain, a caution and hesitation filled his eyes laced with weariness.

There was sadness.

A sense of disbelief.

A challenge.

But above all the rest, stronger and more recognizable then her own eyes in a mirror, was that one emotion Maria lived for.

An emotion that would end up making all the difference.

It was there for less then a second, but the hope she had allowed to fester earlier blossomed like a flower in spring time.

Even eight years away wasn’t enough for Maria to forget that look.

And oh god had she tried.

Love.

But then he blinked and it was gone.

Maria blinked then and so was he.

The front door slamming once again.

Silence followed the exchange.

It seemed like hours passed before Isabel started gather the dirty plates and Liz jumped in to help her.

Max went up to make sure the children were still sleeping.

Kyle’s eyes were darting around the room still nervous from the tension that remained.

Serena stared at Maria. Happier than she could ever remember being at any other point of her entire life.

On both planets.

Maria was staring at her hands.

Willing the tears not to fall.

Hoping it was all an illusion.

Praying it was real.

Wanting to sink into the couch and disappear forever.

Finally Kyle spoke, “Maria, Iz and I can take you home now. We should be picking up Haley and heading home soon.”

Maria stood up and jerkily nodding her head.

She floated to the door on autopilot.

The others said goodbye to each other.

They whispered farewells to Maria and made plays for the next day.

The twelve minute car ride back to the DeLuca-Valenti house blew the other one out of the water as far as tension went.

Kyle sent a silent prayer up to Buddha hoping it would get better because one more twelve minute period filled with this much tension was bound to kill him.

Maria slipped out of the car, into the house, up the stairs, and into her bed before Isabel and Kyle reached the house.

When they walked in they were faced with a very angry mama bear.

Isabel took a step back behind Kyle who had to struggle not to grin despite the situation.

“She’s fine Amy. Well she will be. She saw Michael.”

“Oh my poor baby.”

And then Isabel and Kyle were following after Amy who ran up the stairs.

They heard her open the door to Maria’s room and a few muffled heart wrenching sobs escaped before the door was shut again.

“Oh Kyle. What have we done?”

“We did a good thing Iz. It may not seem like it now, but we’ll get through this. All of us will.”

“Promise?”

“Sure, did you see that cracked mirror in Max and Liz’s hallway?”

It was a shame Isabel was so damn beautiful when she was confused, Kyle reflected because very rarely was she every that confused.

“What?”

Kyle grinned then, “Well I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Max, Serena, or you so that leaves…”

“Michael.”

Then it was Isabel’s turn to smile. And Kyle wished he could confuse Isabel more often because when she finally figured it out.

She was breathtakingly gorgeous.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maria barely made it to the bed in time before her body collapsed under the weight of the sobs she was holding back.

It took twenty minutes for her to calm down enough to even notice her mother’s presence in the room.

It took another five before she whispered out brokenly,

“I was such an idiot…I’m so stupid mom. All that time…Sooo much pain.”

It was all she managed before the tears started again.

Amy made hushing noising and combed her hand through Maria’s hair.

“How can he ever forgive me?...I’ll never forgive myself. It was awful mom…What I did to him. I should be tired for murder because I killed Michael Guerin’s soul when I shattered his heart. My god I want to take mine back just so I can stomp all over it for him. I’m inhuman.”

After that Maria would cry herself to sleep.

Tears still spilling from her closed eyes as she slept on through the night restlessly.

Amy closed the door quietly behind her and found Jim and the bottom of the stairs giving Isabel a hug goodbye.

Her eyes looked up and found Amy’s they shared a looked filled with pain for their loved ones. An understanding was met and they traded small smiles before Isabel followed Kyle with a sleeping Haley out the door.

With her back to the wall Amy slide down the floor.

Jim closed the front door, locked it, and then climbed the stairs to his wife.

He found Amy with her knees bent to her chest, arms crossed over her knees and head resting on her forearms.

The short distance allowed him to see the shaking in her limbs.

He sank down next to her and pulled her into his arms.

“Amy…it’s okay Amy. Shhh… there, there now.”

He continued to whisper unintelligible things into her hair as he rubbed her back and occasionally kissed her temple.

Eventually she too passed out from exhaustion.

Jim effortlessly lifted her and moved her onto their bed.

He went back to check on Coby who was still sound asleep.

He looked in on Maria who had tear tracks staining her cheeks.

Then he went back to his wife and wrapped his arms around her protectively.

Shielding her from all the pain he could manage and pleading with every deity he knew existed to get his family through this.

His entire family.

Re: Better than Roswell, New Mexico (CC, Mature) Part 4 2/25

Post by starcrazed »

Part 4

The daylight was streaming in through her widow and Maria tried to force open her swollen eyes.

Her vision still blurred, when they finally opened to the alarming brightness.

Immediately she pulled the pillow back over her head and shut her eyes. Her clock read 8am that was still far to early to be up on her first day home.

She had things to do today. Lunch with Liz to hang out with Zander and Becca.

Some sort of baseball thing with Coby in preparation for spring tryouts. Although Maria was pretty sure at his age everyone still got to play on some team. They were after all only seven.

She had to call her manager and make sure she had taken care of everything.

She also needed to check with her assistant, Traci, and make sure her mail was being forwarded to Roswell.

All of these things flooded Maria’s mind as she hide from the sun.

There was something else she had to do today. Something she wanted to take care of.

Maria kicked off the blankets and got out of bed frustrated that she couldn’t remember it.

She walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower before facing herself in the mirror.

When she saw her eyes, she remembered.

Only one thing in her life has ever filled her eyes with that much pain.

Michael.

She needed to see Michael again.

As painful as it was the first time, knowing it would probably be worse the second. She had to see Michael again.

She needed it more then food or sleep or any other kind of substance that gives life.

Because without Michael, Maria knew she wasn’t really living any kind of life.

After her shower she went down to the kitchen to find Jim making pancakes.

“Morning’ Ria.”

“Hi.”

“Sleep okay?”

She half shrugged, “I’ve had better.”

He nodded in sympathetic understanding.

“Well I figured a healthy breakfast was in order this morning. I imagine you have lots to do today?”

She groaned dropping her head to the table top.

Jim chuckled, “I take that as a yes.”

Maria nodded and poured herself some coffee.

“I should have brought my assistant with me.”

“I’m sure Amy would love that.”

A small smile graced Maria’s face. Jim accomplishing the goal he set out for, finished the pancakes and put them on the table just as Coby came running down the stairs. The quiet that had descended upon Maria and him was replaced by the relentless rambling of his seven year old son.

Amy joined them half way through breakfast and Maria was flooded with a sense of love and belonging as they all sat at the kitchen table talking about random things of no real importance.

Amy scouted out the door to her shop soon after and was followed by Jim and Coby a few minutes later who were off to school and work.

Maria managed to sit in the kitchen ten minutes before the silence was too much and she found herself grabbing her purse and heading out the door to Liz’s.

Maybe they could do an early lunch.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“I’m coming hold on!!! Becca be a good girl for mommy for two seconds okay.”

Liz fled the kitchen to the front door opening it to find Maria.

Maria smiled as a flustered Liz pulled the door open.

“Oh thank god you’re here. I woke up late this morning and didn’t have time to shower before Max had to leave and Becca’s been cranky all morning so she won’t lie down for a nap. You can watch her while I take a quick shower.”

All of that was said as Maria found her self being pulled into the house and then pushed into the kitchen before Liz was gone up the stairs and the shower was turned on.

Maria tried to stop her horrified expression as she found the mess that was Becca Evans sitting in her booster seat at the table.

She barely managed to duck as pudding came sailing in her general direction.

“Becca no!”

Maria cringed as big fat tears welled up in Becca’s amber eyes; obviously she had spoken to loudly and harshly.

“Shh baby it’s okay don’t cry. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not baby!!!”

“Of course you’re not. You’re a big girl. How about we get cleaned up and go watch some TV.”

Maria was amazed at the instant change in the little girl.

“Otay.”

Maria grinned in relief.

Twenty-five minutes later when Liz came down she found Maria running her had through the soft, shiny brown hair of a sleeping Becca.

After Liz moved her into the play room she came back out and sat with Maria on the couch.

“Hi.”

Maria grinned goofily.

“She’s so precious.”

Liz nodded. “She really is great. Her and Zander both are so amazing.”

“And this one will be too I bet.”

Maria reached out to touch the small bump on Liz’s stomach.

Liz’s eyes got watery as she put her hand on top of Maria’s. “I’m so glad you’re home. Thank you for coming back with them.”

Maria’s own eyes still in recovery from her sob fest last night easily teared.

“Chica, I’m so sorry I was too stubborn to come home sooner. I’ve wanted to come home for so long. I’m just sorry it took Isabel and Kyle coming to get me to make it happen. It’s just…I never used to think I would hide like that. I guess I’m more of a coward then I thought hmm?”

Liz was already adamantly shaking her head no.

“God Maria, what you did was so brave, even if we could have handled it differently without so much distance between us. Not just the literal distance either. And you came back Maria. You were able to come back, so you’ll never be a coward to me. Nobody thinks you are.”

Maria gave a self-depreciating laugh, “I bet Michael does. I bet he thinks all kinds of horrible things about me. All the time.”

“Maybe. I’m sure he did at first. But I think he may have understood you for a little while when you were gone. He’s proud of you Maria. He doesn’t say anything, but he has your albums, he saved your interviews. And the only time he really smiles anymore, well anything resembling a smile is when your song is on the radio. He may have been angry at first Maria, hell we all were. But he got past it. We all did. It’s the hurt now that we all have to deal with.”

“Lizzie when did you become a Michael expert?”

Liz shook her head, “Nope that’s all Max, well, most of it is anyways.”

Maria sighed and covered her face with her hands, “What do I do Liz?”

“I can’t tell you that Maria. No one can give you an answer to that. We don’t understand you and Michael enough to even begin forming a hypothesis of how you should approach this.”

“God Liz, it’s not a science project.”

“I know Maria, it’s so much more important than that.”

“Right with Khviar coming and all…”

“Ria, that’s not all it is and you know it. It’s not fair for either one of you and its time the pain stopped.”

Maria nodded, tears slipping from her eyes, “But HOW?”

Liz gave her life-long friend a warm smile, “You already know that Maria. Now you’re just here to procrastinate.”

Maria rolled her eyes, “No I’m here for our lunch date, and hanging out with my best friend, and then picking Zan up from school and playing with him and Becca at Coby’s baseball thing while you and Max get an early dinner in. Then I will face the…what did Serena call him?”

“Boneheaded neanderthal.”

Liz mimicked back with a straight face. A front that crumpled with the first giggle that escaped Maria’s sealed lips.

“Yes the boneheaded neanderthal and if I live to tell the tale perhaps we can do lunch again tomorrow?”

“Sounds wonderful.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Zander had absolutely loved the baseball game. Turns out it was just a small game after school between two classrooms.

Zan couldn’t stop laughing at all the seven year olds running around. He even decided he might like to give baseball a try.

Coby was in awe that Zan had come to the game. He was only two years older, but still Coby looked up to him.

And Coby managed to hold back annoyance when Becca tried to climb all over him.

Once the game was over Maria took all three of them to Kyle and Isabel’s for dinner. Max and Liz would pick up their kids there later and Kyle was going to take Coby home for her.

She was on her second cup of tea after dinner when Isabel approached her and pulled the mug out of her hands and dumped it in the sink.

“Get out of my house.”

Maria looked up horrified, “What?!”

Isabel’s eyes held a challenge and even a small amount of enjoyment.

“I will not allow you to hide out in my house when we ALL know you have more important things you need to be doing right now.”

“Isabel…I can’t.”

“Sure you can. Maria he’s waited eight years for you. Please don’t make my brother wait any longer.”

A hint of desperation filled her tone, something she had tried to hide from Maria since she saw her in New York.

It grabbed Maria’s attention instantly.

Maria frowned, Isabel was not the type to be so fraught. Not unless the situation was really that important.

Maria watched Isabel’s soft brown eyes begin to water. The pain she felt for her brother shinnying through.

Maria stood and wrapped the taller girl in a hug. “Okay Isabel. I’m going.”

She watched as Isabel frantically wiped the few tears that had escaped away.

“Thank you Maria. I need my brother back. It’s not the same without both of them. I need Michael. WE ALL NEED Michael back.”

Maria inhaled deeply trying to keep at bay the too present tears. She gave a wobbly smile and picked up her jacket and purse.

“I see you tomorrow at Haley’s birthday party?”

Isabel nodded and then Maria was shocked to find herself pulled into yet another hug by her.

“Good Luck Ria.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maria followed the directions Liz had given her. She was surprised at the neighborhood the apartment was in.

It was much nicer then his last place.

She found his name place and rang the doorbell, surprised when she was buzzed in almost immediately.

When she got to the door at the end of the hallway she raised her hand to knock, but it swung open before she could.

Serena slipped out and Maria caught the strains of a Metallica song being cut off as the door clicked shut.

“Hi Maria. Liz called earlier and told me you would be stopping by. Then Isabel just called…twenty minutes ago…and said you were on your way.”

Maria blushed, “Yeah, I ah…took the long way.”

Serena let out a small laugh, “Understandable.”

Maria nodded looking to the other woman. Still doubtful about her, but willing to trust what Liz said.

Willing to trust Michael.

Even though she has given him no reason to trust her.

“So he’s…”

Serena nodded, “Yeah he’s in his study, second door on the left. You could probably just walk right in. You’d probably need a bull horn for him to hear you over that racket.”

Maria smiled in thanks and Serena moved aside, “Go easy on him Maria.”

Maria could only nod as the tears started to form in her eyes yet again.

She slipped into the door and clicked in shut softly behind her.

She looked around taking in the spacious living room to her left with a TV and nice stereo. The couches were deep green blending well with the dark mahogany wood tables. The room itself was dark, the blinds pulled shut.

To her right was the kitchen almost as big as the living room with a small table that seated four and state of the art appliances.

A far cry from the smelling refrigerator at his first place.

She walked along slowly noting how clean it was. There were no carelessly placed items anywhere.

The bathroom was to the right after the kitchen and across the bedroom was what she assumed to be Serena’s room since it was a light purple with a pastel comforter on the queen size bed.

The music go louder the closer she got to the study. She stopped in front of the closed door and almost laughed at the DO NO DISTURB sign slapped across it.

As if anyone would dare.

Maria saw that the last door on the right hand side was open and she noticed the dark blue walls and the dark wooden floor. The dresser in the corner matching it exactly.

She inhaled deeply searching for some inner strength.

Not finding any she raised her hand and banged on the door anyway.

Then she held her breath as she waited.

A minute passed and nothing so she banged again.

“Go away Serena!!”

She was surprised how much it hurt that he thought it was Serena.

Even though he would have no reason to expect her to be there.

Some part of her had hope he could feel her.

Just like she could feel the vibes coming from him even with the closed door separating them.

She knocked on the door again. Only to hear the music, if possible, get louder.

Maria huffed frustrated, but still unwilling to just open the door. She knocked again the music stopped abruptly.

“Serena, leave me alone.”

Maria brought a hand to her heart.

The pain was back again.

In his voice.

In her heart.

With the music turned off, she knocked one last time softly.

She heard him approach the door and drop his forehead against it.

She was startled when he spoke. It was in a quiet voice but she heard every word. Maria knew he had realized who was standing on the other side of his door.

“What are you doing here?”

Maria leaned her own forehead against the closed door ignoring the tears that leaked from her eyes.

So close, the width of a door separated them, but it might as well have been the ocean.

She answered his question just as softly as he asked it,

“I came back.”

Maria was startled to find herself falling forward when the door swung open. She reached out to steady herself, but only ended up colliding with Michael’s strong solid chest.

His arms steadying her, pulling her away from his body.

Maria didn’t know which hurt more, the delicious tingle when her hands had touched him, or his hands touching her to move her away.

She looked up into his eyes. They were closed off to her. Yesterday he was unprepared for her presences so she had seen it all. Now there was very little for her too see.

Mostly anger, a bit of confusion, and a sliver of pain.

“You didn’t COME BACK.”

Confusion filled Maria’s eyes briefly until she realized the emphasis on his words.

She nodded at the truth of his statement, trying to find another way to phrase her thoughts.

“What are you doing here Maria?”

She closed her eyes at the sound of her name on his lips. It warmed her entire being at the same time giving her chills down her spine.

She wondered if he knew the effect it had on her. Only he was ever capable of inciting such a reaction with only her name. Maria laughed inside, it was the sweetest sound she had ever heard, why on Earth did she leave to go discover herself in music when the greatest sound came from him.

She froze as she felt him lean in closer, her eyes still closed, he wiped away the tear tracks on her check with his thumb. He whispered closer to her ear.

“Why are you here?”

Maria almost whimpered when he pulled away. Closer yet further then they had been in the past eight years.

“I had to.”

He gave a patronizing laugh, “Why because Isabel and Kyle went to New York and dragged you here?”

It was the laugh and disbelief in his tone that sent her off, “No Michael. They didn’t have to DRAG me anywhere. I WANTED to come.” She lowered her voice as she admitted the last part.

“I’ve wanted to come back for sooo long. I’ve needed to be with…home. I needed to be home.”

Maria flinched at the lack of eloquence, but she couldn’t admit that she needed him.

It was too soon.

Too much.

It wouldn’t matter though really. Her Michael would know he was her home. Hopefully the man in front of her still knew it too.

The brief flash in his eyes told her he did.

She inhaled a breath at the sight of the passion simmering in the brown depths.

All it did was simmer though, before he walked back into the study. She followed him since he left the door open.

She was in awe at all the color she found in their.

A mural on each wall, bursting with colors.

Sketches littering the floor.

Easels propped up drying against the wall overflowing with emotions.

She covered her open mouth with her hand, “Michael they’re beautiful.”

As Maria studied the art, Michael studied Maria.

“They’re you.”

If she wasn’t so focused, so quiet, she would have missed his admission, but she heard it.

Michael didn’t give her time to respond though.

“Roswell’s not you’re home.”

It wasn’t a question. Just a statement of fact. Something they both knew.

It was a matter of admitting the other part that would be a problem. It would be telling each other what once so long ago was instinct that they would have the most difficulty confessing again.

She caught his eyes, not hiding anything she was feeling.

Letting him see her, really see her.

Like only he could.

It caught him off guard enough to have his own eyes swarm with emotions before she responded.

“No it’s not.”

Then they reached an impasse.

They had so much to say to each other, but he was never really that good with words to begin with. And she had no idea how to proceed.

So they stood in the dark room just staring at each other surrounded by Michael’s artwork. By all the life Isabel claimed had left him since Maria walked away.

Basking in each others presences.

Memorizing features that had faded in their minds.

Exploring new attributes that had developed over time.

Maria finally sighed, “I’m not going anywhere Michael.”

She had to start somewhere.

She needed him to trust her again; he would never give her back the pieces of his heart to mend if he didn’t trust her.

Maria saw the disbelief cross his face, but he didn’t speak it.

“You should go to Haley’s birthday party tomorrow. Your nieces and nephews deserve to know what a wonderful uncle you are. Your brother and sister shouldn’t have to learn about you secondhand from Serena. Serena should get to know more then just the boneheaded neanderthal you can be. Liz and Kyle miss their friend.”

She walked towards the door of the study, pausing she glanced over her shoulder at him, “It would be really great to see you tomorrow Michael.”

She continued in a whisper before she fled the apartment in an attempt to keep her tears hidden.

“They miss you. We ALL miss you.”

Had she of not run off as quickly as she did Maria might have realize Michael had followed her to the door.

Had her eyes already not been blurred by tears she would have seen the glass in the apartment rattling.

It would have been enough to make her pause and then she could have seen Michael lift an arm and blast his TV right before all the light bulbs shattered.

As it was though Maria was already in her car speeding away.

Michael dropped to the couch glazing at the broken TV.

Scattered across the floor in so many pieces.

Just like his heart.

“I’ve missed them too. I’ve missed you.”

TBC…

Re: Better than Roswell, New Mexico (CC, Mature) Part 5 3/2

Post by starcrazed »

Part 5

Maria didn’t even attempt to open her eyes as the sunlight hit her face. She groaned and pulled the pillow over her head, digging herself deeper into the covers trying to find warmth.

It was only her second day back in Roswell. She had cried enough tears last night to fill buckets. She could probably fill bathtubs if you counted all the tears she’s shed in the past two days.

She kicked off the covers and ran to the bathroom turning on the hot water for her shower.

Looking in the mirror, her eyes weren’t swollen today, but they were blood shot and there were now dark circles under her eyes.

She sighed and climbed under the hot water letting it hit her shivering body, relaxing her tense muscles, and cleaning off all the pain of yesterday.

Twenty minutes later she was down in the kitchen again pouring herself another cup of coffee.

Coby was sitting at the table eating a bowl of cereal.

“No Pancakes today?”

Coby shook his head no and spoke with his mouth full getting bits of chewed cereal all of the table.

“Dad has to go in early on Wednesdays and Mom doesn’t go in till later.”

Maria nodded stirring her cream and sugar. Then sipping the hot liquid. It burned her insides wiping her clean from within.

“Well how bout I take you to school today?”

Coby’s hazel eyes lit up, “Really.”

Maria laughed at his excitement, “Sure I’m not busy this morning. Are you excited for Haley’s party later tonight?”

Coby rolled his eyes, “Haley’s a baby. Baby parties are stupid.”

“I think it will be fun. Zan and Becca will be there, all your auntie’s and uncles. Plus cake!”

Coby roared with laughter, “I LOVE CAKE!!!”

“Me too!”

Maria watched as her little brother became thoughtful, “All my aunts and uncles?”

She nodded her head, “Definitely.”

“Even the one with the funny hair.”

Maria’s smile dropped her brows rose together, “The one with the…oh…Michael?”

Coby nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, he draws the coolest pictures. He did this one of me in my baseball uniform, but I spilled juice on it so I was hopin I could ask him for another one.”

Maria straightened from her leaning position against the counter, she turned into the fridge and stared at all the stuff in it blinking back more tears.

“I’m not sure Coby.”

“Oh.” Maria cursed silently as she heard the defeated tone from the small boy.

She walked over to him and messed up his light brown hair, “Hey, if not I’ll take you over to his place later on in the week okay.”

Coby smiled then, “Cool, Ria. I’m gonna get my bag and we can go.”

Maria nodded sinking into the chair he vacated, her head sinking onto the table once again. This time the strength she was searching for from within was found.

It wasn’t much, but it was there. And it even grew a little bit as her mom and Coby appeared in the doorway Coby being tickled mercilessly by their mom.

Maria laughed and hugged her mom before grabbing Coby’s hand and taking him off to school.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maria knocked on the front door hesitantly.

It wasn’t that Isabel had been exactly unwelcoming, but she hadn’t shown any outright signs of forgiveness and friendship.

Maria planned on sticking around and she planned on getting all her friends back.

She needed her family.

Isabel cracked open the door with Haley on her hip still in pajamas.

“Maria? What’s up? Everything okay?” Isabel opened the door wider allowing Maria to come in from the cold.

“Everything’s fine Iz. I was just thinking that you might want some help to get ready for Haley’s party tonight. I’m just here to offer up my services and hope you don’t slam the door in my face. I’ve made it inside, so I’m off to a good start as far as I’m considered.”

Maria fidgeted as Isabel studied her. It wasn’t until Haley began to tug on her hair and demand food that she looked away and walked to the kitchen.

She sighed and followed a foot behind her. Waiting for acceptance, dismissal, or something worse.

Isabel had Haley seated in her high chair and looked up to see the self conscious Maria loitering in the door way.

Maria watched as Isabel clenched her eyes shut and then let out a slow breath. Maria couldn’t help but smile when Isabel’s soft brown eyes opened again and their was forgiveness there.

“I’m sorry I was a witch when we came to New York Maria. I shouldn’t have just shoved myself into your life, demand you change it and act like an ungrateful wench the whole time…”

Maria cut her off, “I’m glad you did.”

Isabel returned Maria’s hesitant smile. “Well, me too now that you’re here. But I’m still sorry I was so cruel. It’s just…”

“I hurt Michael.”

Isabel nodded, “Yeah, you hurt Michael and you scared all of us. I was so worried you wouldn’t come back with us. I handled it the only way I knew how too. The Ice Queen is the only defense mechanism I have left nowadays and that hardly works anymore. I just didn’t want to see my family so splintered anymore. Can you understand that? Can you forgive me?”

“God Isabel, it’s me that should be begging on my hands and knees for all of your forgiveness. I abandoned all of you. I was selfish and cold and negligent. I didn’t need to leave behind the only people who I ever loved, the only people who really knew me in order to make a few songs. It wasn’t a fair payoff at all. Not for me or any of you.”

Both woman became silent as they struggled to keep their emotions from breaching the surface.

“So you’re sorry. And I’m sorry. And you’re not going to leave us again anytime soon?”

Maria grinned, “Nah, you’ll be praying to get rid of me before I leave again willingly.”

Isabel chuckled then as did Haley who had no idea what was taking place around her, “I don’t doubt that… I could use some help today. Kyle got called into the magazine so…”

Instantly Maria brightened, “Well, where do we start.”

It was less then an hour later when Maria found herself wondering if anyone had yet dubbed Isabel the "Birthday Nazi” and if they had why hadn't they warned her?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

At four o’clock the grandparents showed up. First the DeLuca-Valenti’s, then the Evans who were very shocked to find Maria greeting them at the door.

Diane had Maria wrapped in a hug and Philip was patting her on the back. Maria was too stunned to do anything, but hug the crying woman back.

“I’m so glad you’re home Maria.”

“Me too, Mrs. Evans, me too.”

“Oh please, Diane. Mrs. Evans is silly now that you’re all grown up.”

Maria nodded and Diane was moving past her calling out for her adorable granddaughter. Haley giggled at her grandma and was reaching up for a hug as soon as she saw her.

Isabel was still in the kitchen frosting the cake and Kyle had just gotten home and was in the shower.

Maria was able to run home an hour ago and get ready for the party herself before running back to Kyle and Isabel’s.

Maria was about to join Isabel in the kitchen when the doorbell rang again and she went and answered it.

Her jaw dropped open when she saw Michael standing at the other side.

Freshly shaven and showered. His hair was shorter too so it just fell into his eyes like their junior year of high school. He had on his Doc Martin boots with a dark pair of jeans and a dark green button up shirt with a black T-shirt on underneath.

Maria’s mouth went dry and she self consciously tugged at her own jeans and black sweater.

“You’re here.”

Michael nodded slowly and ran a hand through his hair, “You ah…didn’t mention a time so...”

“No, this is perfect.”

Michael nodded again. “So can I come in or…?”

“Oh my god!” Maria moved aside blushing bright fuchsia.

Michael shut the door behind him and looked around the house trying not to stare at Maria and how the black sweater clung to her like a second skin.

“What’s that?”

Maria watched him turn from the pictures over the fireplace to her pointing finger to the object in his hand.

“Haley’s present.”

“Oh. Well we’re putting the presents over here in the living room so.”

“We’re?” Maria blushed deeper if possible, as he raised a questioning eye-brow at her.

“Yeah, I was helping Isabel plan so…” She trailed off. Michael found a place for his gift along with the Evans and DeLuca-Valenti’s.

“Where’s Serena?”

Maria cringed in disgust as she picked up all the jealousy in the question. Michael seemed not to notice as he just shrugged his shoulders.

“Maria who was at the door… Michael?”

Maria watched as Isabel halted and Michael slowly turned meeting his sister’s unbelieving gaze.

“Hey Izzie.”

Isabel brought a hand to her mouth to stifle the sob that escaped. Maria watched in sympathy as she tired to take a step forward, but was still too stunned to moved. Thankfully Michael was not and he walked over to her and wrapped her in a bear hug.

It was only because Maria was so close that she heard what he whispered into her ear.

“I’m sorry I haven’t bee around Iz. Sorry that I hurt you because of my pain. Sorry that I’ve missed so much of Hales growing up, but I’m here now. I’m trying.”

Maria went to answer the ringing door as Isabel tightened her grasp on Michael and nodded her head into his shoulder.

The door was barely open before two small balls of energy were running past her and calling out to Haley. Maria looked up to find a smiling Max and Liz.

“Hey guys.”

“Hi Maria.”

Max placed a kiss on Maria’s cheek before moving deeper inside the house. Liz waiting until after Maria shut the door before hugging her.

“Well?”

Maria pulled back and saw the curiosity dancing in Liz’s eyes. Maria rolled her eyes, of course Liz would want to know how her visit with Michael went.

Maria shrugged her shoulders she saw Liz about to open her mouth to say something but stopped her by raising her hand and pointing to Michael and Isabel still hugging, but now joined by Max.

“Oh my…Ria…”

Maria smiled as the tears gathered in Liz’s eyes.

“I know Chica. I know.”

Liz hugged her again tighter this time. “Thank you.”

Maria shook her head, “I didn’t do anything Liz.”

“You came home.”

Liz and Maria joined the kids and the grandparents in the kitchen leaving the alien trio in the living room.

As Maria walked passed them again she couldn’t help but catch a few more words from the soft spoken Michael and Max’s answer.

“We okay Maxwell?”

Max nodded as he pulled out of the three way hug, “Of course Brother. Now we’re good.”

When Kyle came down the stairs he joined the rest in the kitchen after briefly stopping to answer the door for Serena.

Serena stopped as she saw the trio all seated in the living room soft smiles playing on all their faces. She grinned herself as she waltzed into the kitchen.

She found the grandparents entertaining the grandkids and Kyle, Liz, and Maria sitting at the other end of the table. She bounced over to them the grin only growing bigger.

Maria looked up noticing that Kyle and Liz had turned away. She found Serena beaming at her.

Maria sighed, “Serena, I didn’t do anything.”

Serena had the nerve to chuckle, hitching her thumb over her shoulder in the direction of the trio she remarked, “That tells me otherwise.”

Maria rolled her eyes giving up on trying to convince them. She was further saved as Isabel rushed back into the kitchen,

“Oh my, I’m such a horrible hostess. Urgh…forgive me and my thoughtlessness. Kyle did you offer everyone drinks?”

Kyle nodded his head smiling innocently. When Isabel ran off to the dinning room he glared at the room, “Tell her differently and you’re all dead.”

Liz and Serena burst into laughter, the grandparents followed soon after. Maria just rolled her eyes.

When Isabel returned she ushered everyone into the dinning room so they could start the meal.

Maria watched as Coby walked over to Michael who was leaning on the door frame taking everything in, but remaining on the outskirts.

He tugged at Michael’s shirt and Maria watched in fascination as Michael squatted down to his level, “What’s up Cob-man?”

“You haven’t been around in a while.”

Michael nodded his head solemnly. “No, I haven’t. I’m sorry I’ve been a real bum Coby.”

Coby half shrugged, “It’s otay. I missed you though.”

Maria watched I awe as Michael smirked at her brother with a bit of happiness, “I missed you too buddy.”

Coby smiled pleased with this answer then he moved on to the real problem, “I lost that picture you made me. The one with me in the baseball uniform. Can you draw me another one?”

“Sure Coby.”

He messed up his hair and stood up swinging Coby up into his arms and carrying the screeching boy into the dinning room, only setting him down when Isabel and Amy started yelling at him.

Maria leaned against the counter taking deep breaths, stalling before she went into the dinning room with the rest of her family. Her eyes were closed so when the voice spoke to her she was startled.

“They’re really close.”

She opened her eyes, “Damn it Kyle.”

“I used to be jealous because I thought Coby and Michael had a better relationship. They were more like brothers it seemed then Coby and me.”

“Kyle…”

He waved a hand at Maria to silence her.

“I was walking through the park one day when they were playing. It was almost three years since you left us, and Coby was rambling about something that only two year olds are capable of understanding. And Michael was so concentrated on him. Then Michael smiled. It was the smile that made me realize that for Michael, Coby made it hurt less. Your absence. Because Coby is so much like you. Your personalities are so similar. I guess that ache in Michael’s heart went away a little bit every time he got to hang out with Coby. It was like having a little piece of you back. Since that day Ria, I’ve been convinced that it’s been Coby that’s kept him from losing it completely. As crazy as that may seem.”

“Kyle…”

“Hey you don’t have to say anything. That’s pretty deep shit I know especially for me. I just thought… it touched me, that he loves you that much. It touched something in me that I never vocalized and I thought who better to share it with then the person who inspires such devotion.”

“Thank you.”

Kyle nodded and then his somber tone was gone replaced by a goofy grin, “Come on, we have to go eat. Isabel said I can’t open Haley’s presents until dinners over!”

Maria’s laughter jingled throughout the kitchen and carried over to the dinning room.

She was so caught up in her laughter and the ridiculous impressions Kyle moved into, that she missed the look on Michael’s face as she entered laughing.

The look of devotion that Kyle spoke of.

Amy saw it though and she smiled.

Liz saw it and she grabbed Max’s hand, who squeezed back just as tightly.

Serena saw it and sent up a silent prayer of thanks to the beings that sent them to Earth.

Isabel saw it and a weight lifted off her shoulders before she started serving everyone large helpings of food.

All of them thinking since it was a new beginning, it was fitting to start it with a party.

Re: Better than Roswell, New Mexico (CC, Mature) Part 6 3/9

Post by starcrazed »

Words and music by Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. The song is not mine. I’m just borrowing it!

Part 6

After dinner was over they all gathered in the living room so Haley could open her presents.

Well, so Kyle could open Haley’s presents.

With the arrival of Max and Liz and then later Serena, Michael’s present was buried at the bottom of the pile so now it was the only one left to be opened.

He picked it up and handed it to Isabel.

Maria watched them exchange a glance; Isabel’s filled with curiosity, Michael’s with hesitation.

It was wrapped in pristine white paper that she carefully pulled back.

The actual painting was facing her and Kyle so all Maria could see was the back. There was a line of scrawling in Michael’s handwriting. Maria unconsciously leaned forward to read it.

The Forever kind of Love under that was Michael’s name printed. All of it was so reminiscent of her napkin holder’s “Hand Made by Michael” sign; it brought a pang to her chest.

Maria’s eyes narrowed as she studied the title. It was familiar to her somehow. As she tried to recall a memory of why, she missed the trembling of Isabel and her soft cries as Kyle pulled her into a hug and thanked Michael over her shoulder.

In the process the picture got turned around and Maria recognizing the color scheme covered her mouth as she gasped. The truth of what she should of recognized yesterday in Michael’s study hit her.

It was a beautiful drawing of a one year old Haley playing with some blocks in the foreground. In the background, stood two vague outlines of Kyle and Isabel. It was done in all black and gray highlighted in certain areas with pink: the blocks, Isabel’s sweater, and Haley’s cheeks.

“Oh my god.” Everyone turned to look at Maria.

“That’s you.” She pointed at the painting.

The others looked on in confusion, waiting for her to explain.

“I have that, in New York. I have your pieces. The Broken Heart, The Faded Pixie, The Missing Siblings, The Lost Childhood.”

She pulled air into her lungs before continuing. “Michael those are yours!”

Michael nodded, hating how now everyone was staring at the two of them.

“But they’re so not like you’re…”

Maria trailed off at his wide eyes and shake of his head.

Everyone was already involved and all asked, “His what?”

At the same time Michael and Maria answered, “Nothing.”

The others turned doubtful looks towards the two.

Maria dropped her head into her hands and mumbles to herself.

Liz being closest put a hand on Maria’s back and gentle prodded her, “Ria?”

“It’s you’re pain. It’s displayed all over my walls? I’ve been living surrounded by you’re pain.”

She looks to him for confirmation she doesn’t need.

His eyes tell her it’s true nonetheless.

Everyone is startled by the humorless laugh, especially when it turns to hiccuping sobs. Liz and Amy jump up and rush to her side, dragging her out of the room.

Michael gets up to leave, Isabel notices and jumps up too, “Please, we haven’t had cake yet Michael.”

She follows him to the door when he doesn’t stop. As his hand touches the doorknob he turns to her, “It’s too much Iz. I’ll drop by later to see you and Hales tomorrow.”

Isabel, teary eyed gives him a hug and nods in acceptance.

“I’m really glad you came Michael.”

He manages half a smirk and responds, “Me too Iz.”

Then he walks out the door and it clicks shut softly behind him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maria returns, her eyes swollen and her nose red, but she manages a forced smile for the children.

“Sorry about that.”

Everyone shakes it off and they have cake, but even two year old Haley can tell the mood of the party has changed.

It isn’t long before everyone starts to leave for the evening.

As Maria pulls out of a hug with Kyle she apologizes. She smiles as he shrugs at her.

When Isabel comes to give her a hug the tears start again, “Isabel I’m so sorry I ruined Haley’s party.”

Isabel pulls back shocked, “Maria, you didn’t ruin the party at all. You probably made the party. You got Michael to come.”

Maria shook her head tired of trying to convince them it wasn’t the truth.

Isabel rolls her eyes and pulls Maria back into a hug, “Thank you anyway. For all you’ve done today.”

Maria nods and heads out with Coby, Jim, and her mom.

When Maria gets home she goes straight to bed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Maria stumbles to the bathroom and flips on the shower the next morning.

She doesn’t even bother to look in the mirror knowing the dark circles will still be there and the swollen, bloodshot eyes haven’t disappeared either.

When she gets downstairs the house is already empty.

She contemplates going to bother Liz, but then remembers her and Isabel actually have a catering gig this afternoon.

She chuckled at the thought of Liz and Isabel going into business together.

“Evans’ Eatings” At the time Isabel was back to being an Evans, Jesse having left her and Kyle and her yet to be an item.

After she was married to Kyle they decided to keep the name still though. After all she would always be an Evans.

Maria looked up from her coffee cup at the table and noticed for the first time a picture that hung in the dinning room of this house.

She jumped out of her seat and ran up to it. It was colorful. But the lines were the same. So were all the emotions coming from it.

Maria reached up and pulled it off the hook, slowly she turned it around not at all surprised when she saw The Loving Parents with Michael’s name under it.

She turned back to stare at the image of Coby playing catch with Jim when he was about four. Her mom in the background leaning against the frame of the back door, there was a darkness in Amy’s eyes. Sadness for the loss of another child. The loss of Maria.

With a destination in mind she grabbed her coat and purse and slammed out of the house.

Eight minutes later she is knocking on the apartment door after Serena buzzed her in.

Maria barges in before Serena even has the door all the way open. None of this fazes Serena though as she smiles broadly. “I can leave if you want?”

“What.” Maria looks up at the other woman startled to see her there.

Serena’s grin widens as she point to the door.

Maria seems to consider it for a second before a smile crosses her face, “Nah, how about we just hang out. Unless you have stuff to do?”

“Nope, hanging out sound good.”

So Maria sits on the couch and Serena gets them cherry cokes and some chips and then throws on a DVD.

It’s the obnoxious laughter that has Michael cautiously leaving his room to study them.

Maria feels the difference the moment he’s in the room and Serena notices it when Maria goes rigid.

They turn to look at Michael in question.

He continues to study them until he shakes his head and goes back to his room.

Serena pauses the movie and stands up, “I’m gonna run out and get us some food. We can’t live on these snacks all day…Chinese?”

Maria smiles, “Sure”

Serena opens her mouth to speak but instantly loud music begins pounding the walls from Michael’s study.

They both roll their eyes.

Serena yells out to Maria, “I’ll be back in like half an hour? You talk to him.”

Maria nods and smiles her appreciation. She waits until the apartment door closes behind Serena before she wanders over to his study.

She knocks on the door. The music gets louder so she knocks on the door louder. If possible the music grew louder too. She has no choice but to bang on the door.

Maria jumps when he throws open the door.

He glares at her expectantly.

“I want to talk about the pictures.”

“I don’t.”

“Michael!”

“Maria, NO!”

“The Pixie’s me and the warrior too, with the bow and arrow piercing the black heart.”

“Damn it Maria!”

The Broken Heart its one piece out of two isn’t it? I’ve read that about the work.”

“Maria you can’t just stomp in here and demanding answers. It’s now how it works!”

“Then tell me how it works Michael. Tell me how to FIX THIS!”

“I DON’T KNOW ALRIGHT! I don’t know.”

Maria saw the flicker in his eyes. The flicker that warned her he was going to kiss her to shut her up. But then it was gone or he at least got control of it and she too deflated.

Michael sighed when he saw the fight go out of her, “It’s not for sale.”

“Can I see it?” Hope filled her eyes, but his eyes remained stern. “Fine, I want push.”

She was surprised at the small, genuine smile that crossed his features if for however brief an instant.

“It’s what you do. You’re a vibrator. If it’s not you pushing, it’s your vibes demanding to be noticed.”

He turned away then to turn off the stereo properly so he missed the 100 watt smile that crossed her face. When he turned back to her it was safely hidden.

They stared at each other for a minute.

“I should go.”

Michael nodded, “Probably.”

“Serena went to get food for you guys so.”

“I don’t do Chinese.”

“Wanna get a burger.” Maria could have hit herself for letting the question pasted her lips. She watched as the shock crossed his face, imagining she too looked as startled.

“Maybe another time, I’m actually heading over to Isabel’s soon.”

“Oh right. Okay then.” She twisted her hands awkwardly until finally looked up and graced him with a soft smile.

“Goodbye Michael.”

He walked her to the door, as she crossed the threshold he whispered back, “See you later Maria.”

She glanced back over her shoulder and somehow found the courage to wink at him before sauntering down the hallway

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The next day Maria woke up as the sun hit her pillow. She jumped out of bed and ran to the shower. Turning the hot water on she closed her eyes and spun to face the mirror.

She inhaled a deep breath and slowly opened her eyes.

Her reflection beamed back to her as her green eyes sparkled. Maria giggled as she hopped into the shower.

What wasn’t there to be happy about? She and Michael were fighting. He almost kissed her. He wanted to kiss her. He said he’d see her later, possibly for a burger.

When she skated down the stairs and into the kitchen Jim and Amy looked up from their food and were amazed to find the energetic girl they hadn’t seen for eight years.

“Good morning mom! Jim!”

Amy and Jim exchanged knowing looks.

“So mom I know you’re going to make that delivery today with Jim. I can pick up Coby from school if you want and if you have any chores I’d be happy to do those, turns out Liz and Isabel have another catering gig today so…”

“…so you need a way to exercise all this excitement.” Amy smirked as Maria froze. She turned guiltily towards them.

“Maybe.”

It was all she said before she went digging through the refrigerator for food.

She was sitting down to eat as Jim and Amy finished. Jim dropped a kiss on the top of her head. Amy wrapped her in a tight hug.

“I don’t have any house stuff specifically that you could do, but go nuts.”

Maria nodded. “I’m glad you’re happy sweetie.” Maria smiled at her mom and nodded again.

Twenty minutes later Maria was flipping through the CDs in the living room stereo collection. She smiled and put on the CD.

With the remote for the stereo in one hand and the dust rang in another, Maria started belting out the words.

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
Id love you to love me.
Im beggin you to beg me.

She effortlessly tackled the living room getting ride of all the dust bunnies on the end tables and mantle. Spinning into the kitchen she kept singing.

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
Id love you to love me.
Ill shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand-new shirt.
Ill get home early from work if you say that you love me.

As she finished cleaning and putting the dishes away she moved out to the front hallway and was cleaning off the class pictures of Kyle, Coby, and her as well as graduation for Kyle, and Jim and Amy’s wedding photo. Through it all she kept singing at the top of her lungs.

Didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?
Oh, didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?
Feelin all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin.
Oh, didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
Id love you to love me.
Im beggin you to beg me.
Ill shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand-new shirt.
Ill get home early from work if you say that you love me.

The doorbell rang just as she was about to go into the next line.

She opens the door and her jaw drops open.

Her eyes narrow and she crosses her arms over her chest in anger.

She’s no longer singing happily, but she can still hear the song playing loudly throughout the house

Didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?
Oh, didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?
Feelin all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin.
Oh, didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?
Feelin all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin.
Oh, didnt i, didnt i, didnt I see you cryin?

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
Id love you to love me.
Im beggin you to beg me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me.
I want you to want me
.

As the song draws to a close Maria finally questions the man standing at her door.

“What are you doing here Billy?”

Re: Better than Roswell, New Mexico (CC, Mature) Part 7 3/30

Post by starcrazed »

AN: Thanks for all the feedback and for sticking around. I know I'm a bad author. Classes have been kicking my butt though so I've had no time to write more and I didn't want to update with the few parts I do have in case stuff changes. But I cannot resist your bumps soooo here you go...

Part 7

Maria watches as Billy grins like the fool he must be.

Only when he sees her anger is not fading and she is less then pleased to see him, does he stop smirking.

“Well darlin, I’m here to bring you home.”

Maria leaves the door open as she stomps into the house.

“New York is not home.”

Billy half shrugs, following after her, “Neither is Roswell, New Mexico.”

Maria returns the half shrug. “Roswell has home in it.”

Billy studies her for a minute before throwing his hands in the air.

“The boyfriend?! Unbelievable Maria.”

Maria just glares at him so he goes on.

“We already had this conversation. Remember, eight years ago, you’re the girl with the beautiful dreams that makes beautiful music. You put your heart and soul into your music Maria. How can you just walk away from it?”

Maria lets out a disgusted laugh, “My heart and soul aren’t in my music. My heart and soul are here in Roswell while my music is in New York. ‘Decide what you want in life and live it.’ Remember that too? How come that only applies for the music? I can’t live IT without my heart.”

“Maria you can’t just abandoned all your fans, your contract. You’re a hot commodity in New York. You think they’ll let you just walk away?”

“I’m not consumer product to be bought at ones pleasing. I’m a person. I already talked to Traci and my manager. I don’t have to walk away from it. It’s a break Billy!”

“And the fans?”

“The fans would abandon me sooner or later if I don’t do this. It won’t be long before they notice I’m half a person, not living. Not putting anything into my music because there nothing in here to give it.” Billy rolls his eyes as she points dramatically to her heart.

“Maria…”

“NO BILLY! I’m not going back to NEW YORK. Not now, maybe not ev…”

The doorbell cuts her off. Maria points a finger at Billy and goes to open the door.

She swings it open still huffing from her anger at Billy. Her anger dissipates immediately when she sees Michael standing there hesitant.

Her face lights up and she smiles broadly at him, but then she pales and panics remembering who is in her house.

Michael notices the movement behind her and tears his gaze away from her pale face to see Billy.

“Oh.”

Maria winces as the front panel of glasses shatters.

She watches in horror as Michael’s face shuts down.

“Michael, no. It’s not what you think.”

He shoves the object he’s holding into her hands and backs away.

“I wanted you to know I was protecting it.”

He glares at Billy who has come to stand behind Maria.

“But you can have it back now.”

Michael walks to his truck, Maria staring after him clutching the painting wrapped in a sheet.

When the truck door slams she jumps into action shoving the painting into Billy’s hands and running down to Michael’s truck.

It’s too late though as he pulls out of the driveway and speeds off down the street.

Maria stares after the truck longingly. Her attention only turning back to her unwelcome guest when he lets out a soft whistle.

Maria turns back to find the sheet has fallen away.

“It’s kinda like those pieces you have back in New York. This one is like the opposing piece of that one with the arrow through the heart.”

Maria takes it from his grasp and looks at it, her mouth dropping open. Billy reaches out a comforting hand, but Maria smacks it away.

She turns to him furiously, “Get out.”

“Maria?”

“I’m not now or ever going back there, if you can’t understand why, you’re not the friend I though you were. Now. GET. OUT.”

Billy walks out the door and gets into his car driving away. Maria doesn’t notice at all as she slides to the floor still clutching the painting.

Two large, calloused hands are preciously holding a bright red heart, there are two rings, one on each hand, just like Michael. Above the hands in the corner there’s a woman with her back towards the viewer walking away. The red of the heart is the only color. The woman and hands done in grays and blacks.

Maria braces herself as she turns the painting around to find the name.

She traces Michael’s name underneath the title before allowing her eyes to focus on the title.

The Unworthy Keeper

Maria clenches her eyes shut to stop the immediate flood of tears.

It’s useless though as she carefully stands and sets the painting on the table.

She manages to sink into the kitchen chair before the sobs wrack her body. Shaking her from head to toe as the fat tear drops drip down her face.

Two hours later that’s how Jim and Amy found her.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It takes Maria days to find enough motivation to get herself out of bed.

It wasn’t done single handedly either.

First there was Liz and Isabel. Then Serena. Coby and Kyle did their fair share too of annoying her enough to want to get out of bed just to escape them. Then there was Max who came, but didn’t say anything. His quiet disapproval was enough for Maria though.

Then Serena was back early today. She looked sad as she opened Maria’s bedroom door. Maria peeked at her from underneath the covers.

“Don’t worry Maria I’m not here to drag you out of bed.”

Maria croaked, “You’re not.”

“Nope. I’m here to keep you company today. Everyone else has work. It being Monday and all and I don’t have any appointments at the office so…”

Silence enveloped them for a longtime. It was strange because usually they were both so talkative.

Finally Serena spoke, “You should know it’s safe to come out though. You don’t need to hide anymore in here. He’s gone.”

Maria shot up, not caring she was wearing the same clothes as when Michael was here, or that she hasn’t combed her hair or brushed her teeth in just as long.

“GONE?”

Maria began to look wildly around the room searching for him there even though he wasn’t there. Only his painting stood across from her bed so she could gaze at it and hate herself for all the new pain she was causing.

Serena stood up and hugged her trying to calm her, “Shh, it’s okay. He just had a showing up in Seattle. He’ll be back.”

Maria shook her head no into Serena’s shoulder.

“Sure he will. He’s broken all the mirrors in the apartment a dozen times. All two of them. And I’ve had to fix the TV twice. Whatever it was that set him off…he’s not just gonna walk away from that. From you. He’s not like that.”

“He’s not like me, you mean.”

Serena rolled her eyes.

“Oh will you stop. I don’t know what it was, but after you explain everything will be fine. You got him to go to Haley’s birthday party. He’s been hanging out with Max and Isabel. He actually said goodbye to me today before he left.”

“No Serena you don’t understand. Billy was here. He thinks me and Billy were together.”

Serena didn’t even bother to ask who Billy was. Liz had told her all about him long ago.

“Well are you?”

Maria looked insulted, “NO! Nobody. I’m not with anyone, I never have been, not since Michael. Only Michael.”

Serena shrugged, “I don’t see the problem them. Tell him that.”

Maria laughed agitatedly, “Tell him. You’re the one that called him the boneheaded neanderthal. You think it’s that simple?”

Serena laughed. The tinkling of it was beautiful to Maria who had only heard her own sobs and the quiet voices of her friends for the past two days.

“Oh god, no it will most definitely not be anything resembling simple. That’s not the question.”

“What’s the question?”

Serena leaned in closer to Maria as if sharing the most prized secret she had.

“Is it worth it?”

Maria didn’t even have to think about the answer.

“So what do I do?”

Serena shrugged, “Hell, if I know.”

Maria sighed in defeat. She went to bury herself beneath the covers again when she saw a glitter in Serena’s eye and the beginnings of a smile.

“I do know that’s he’ll be home on Wednesday though. I know that I won’t be home at all on Wednesday.”

Maria was just as much surprised as Serena when she leaned forward and hugged the woman like she was her life line.

“Thanks Serena. You’re a good friend. Even though I haven’t been exactly friendly towards you.”

Serena held her back just as tight as Maria was holding her. “We’ll just say you owe me one.”

“Deal.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Wednesday morning came and Maria got out of bed the minute sunlight hit her pillow.

She had a plan and was determined to see it though. She had worked on it all last night tossing and turning trying to figure out how to play this. It wasn’t a very good plan:

Go to Michael’s. Make him listen.

But it would have to work.

Serena said Michael got home on Wednesday, but she never said what time. So by nine o’clock that morning Maria found her self ringing the bell for the apartment building.

She wasn’t too surprised when no one answered. She pulled her jacket a little closer and leaned against the wall.

Luck must have been on her side that day because not even five minutes later one of the neighbors rushed out the door not even noticing her as she slide inside.

When she got to Serena and Michael’s door she knocked and listened carefully just to be sure he really wasn’t in there.

Satisfied, she sat next to the door with her back to the wall settling to wait for however long it took.

As it was, when Michael finally reached to top of the stairs Maria didn’t see the shocked look on his face because she had fallen fast asleep.

Only two hours into the wait and the sleepless night caught up to her and had Maria sleeping like a baby in Michael’s door frame.

Michael walks over slowly, prepared to wake her up and make her leave but as he reaches out his hand to touch her arm he sees it’s covered with goose flesh. Noticing the jacket, she was using as a pillow Michael cursed as he saw her shiver and wondered how long she had been out here.

Maria doesn’t wake as he effortlessly picks her up to bring her inside. She merely lets out a content sigh and tires to bury herself deeper into Michael’s warmth.

Michael freezes as the soft sigh escapes her, when she snuggles into him he grits his teeth for control, but he can hear the glass window to the outside behind him cracking.

When she whispers his name across her lips like he’s the most precious thing in the world, he caves a little and allows himself to briefly bury his own head in her hair inhaling her deeply.

It was a moment of weakness.

People were allowed to be weak.

Even hybrid people.

Michael opens the door with one hand and carefully maneuvers his way to his bedroom. He stretches out an arm as he kicks the door shut, and pulls back the blankets with his powers.

He sets Maria in the middle and removes her shoes before covering her back up.

He watches in awe as she smiles in her sleep and clutches his pillow smelling it in her sleep.

For once in her life Maria is oblivious to the effect she’s having on him.

He unconsciously reaches out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, but pulls back at the last second.

Michael shakes his head and leaves the room as quietly as the two of them entered.

With the door securely closed and Maria safely behind it. Michael softly bangs his head against the wall.

“Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.”

Michael still shaking his head in disapproval goes to the living room. He manages to watch a hockey game without really seeing it.

He looks at the clock and is surprised it’s already five o’clock. Four hours. She’s been in his bed asleep for four hours. He would be concerned if not for the dark circles he had seen around her eyes telling him she hasn’t been sleeping much.

That made two of them.

Every time he closed his eyes he could see her bright smile a moment before Billy is standing behind her.

Crushing him once again.

When his stomach let out a loud grumble, he got up and went to the kitchen and started making some dinner for him and possibly a dinner guest.

Maria eyes opened to the darkness. An unfamiliar, darkness. She snuggles deeper into the covers that smell like…MICHAEL!!!

She jumps off the bed looking around frantically. Seeing no one in the room, the room that is Michael’s she falls back onto the bed, briefly noticing her shoes at the foot of it.

Sitting up now, away from the pleasurable smell of Michael, another aroma hits her senses and immediately her stomach growls in need for some type of food.

She stands and slowly drifts into the kitchen to find Michael setting a second bowl on the table.

He looks up and Maria still staring at the bowls of food, misses the look Michael gets as his breath stops.

When she turns to him in question his face is a mask and he merely points to the other bowl never letting her see how stunningly gorgeous he thought she was in that instant.

How astounding she was in every instant.

“Eat.”

Maria sits down wordlessly, watching him as he completely ignores her presences, having no idea he has to pretend she’s not there to stop himself from putting a hole in the kitchen wall with his powers. To find a release for all the emotions storming inside him. Too many for him to even name.

“About Billy…” The cabinets rattle and Michael closes his eyes tight. He shakes his head no.

“But Michael…” He stops her again, melting the spoon in his hand.

“After dinner.”

“Kay.”

Michael gets himself another spoon and then they eat their chili in silence.

Glancing at each other when the other wasn’t looking.

Pretending they didn’t know the other was doing the exact same thing.

When they finished Michael picked up the bowls and set them in the sink. He kept moving, towards his room or the study, Maria didn’t know, she didn’t care either.

She stood so quickly her chair teetered and she grabbed his arm as it hit to the floor.

“Michael please…”

Michael couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breath.

Couldn’t think.

Couldn’t do anything at all.

Her arm was touching his arm. Skin to skin.

It had been eight years since he had such a pleasure. It wasn't a brief touch, she was grasping his arm refusing to let go. Already he could feel the emotions that were storming earlier start to fade, only the important ones remained.

All the anger, doubt, pain, and sorrow paled in the brightness of her touch.

The strongest, purest emotions took dominance. They wouldn’t stop crashing though his mind, through his body. They would never leave. He knew this; he had tried to make them.

Maria was relieved as she heard him let out a resigned sigh.

He changed directions to the living room and she followed him.

They sat opposite each other.

Michael looking anywhere but Maria, while she looked nowhere, but at him.

“Billy doesn’t mean anything to me Michael. Not like that. Not like…”

She didn’t finish. Both knew what she was thinking.

Not like YOU.

Maria didn’t know how to go on. What else she needed to say to get Michael back. They had made progress, not much. Only a vague plan for a burger, but it was a step.

Now she felt like she was in that park trying not to cry as his heart shattered against the ground as the ashes that were once her flowers blew away in the wind.

She gazed at him praying for some clue on how to proceed.

Michael’s eyes looked up to her, accusingly darkened by hurt. “You were arguing with him.”

He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. And maybe it would have been once upon a time. But eight years was a long time.

Maria’s eyes clouded in confusion and he spoke again in a whispered voice.

“You were arguing with him like we argue. Like we used to argue.”

The light hit Maria so suddenly she closed her eyes as it blinded her.

Oh she really was an idiot. She didn’t know what on earth possessed Isabel, Serena, and Liz to time and time again convince her otherwise.

Arguing equated to flirting. Flirting that for the two of them led to hot, passionate sex.

Maria dropped to the ground in front of him on her knees, pulling his hand into hers. Trying to catch his gaze that was now thoroughly interested in studying the floor.

“Michael. He wanted me to go back to New York. He was trying to make me leave, Roswell. He wanted me to leave my home. Damn right I was going to yell at him. I would fight anyone that tried to take me away from my home.”

She stopped and tears filled her eyes as he looked at her, “Anyone, but ME apparently.”

Michael barely managed to contain his own emotions as he wiped away her tears that escaped. It only got harder as she leaned into his hand and he cupped her cheek.

“I’m glad you’re here Maria.” Her eyes opened and he saw the happiness reflected in them.

He closed his eyes a minute searching within himself, making sure what he was going to say next was truth.

Making sure he had to say it, that he actually believed it.

It had only been almost two weeks since she returned, but he believed it. As much as he didn’t want to believe it, and as hesitant as he still was.

It shone in her eyes every time she looked at him. Every time she wasn’t looking at him.

“I’m glad you CAME BACK.”

He didn’t have to finish the thought.

Both knew what he was thinking.

Came back to ME.

Maria wrapped her arms around his neck.

Holding him tight.

Making sure it was real.

He pulled her up to the couch wrapping his arms around her waist.

Holding her tight.

Hoping it was enough to keep her this time.

Neither moved.

And when they finally did it was when Michael pulled them down to the couch so they were laying along it horizontally.

Arms still wrapped around each other.

Her head tucked under his chin.

His head resting on her head.

Their legs intertwined.

Every inch of them lined up, perfectly together. How they always had been. How they always should be.

Falling asleep at the only place that was better than Roswell, New Mexico.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It was almost nine at night when Serena finally got back to the apartment. She hated Wednesdays. They were soooo long.

She opened the door and stopped at the breathtaking sight on the living room couch.

She had never seen anything, at any time, on any planet as beautiful as the Commander possessively holding onto Maria.

The pixie, the friend, the sister, the hurricane, the warrior, the beloved.

Their hope.

She was everything to him.

A tug pulled at her heart.

Not because she never got that with Rath. What they had was wonderful, but it paled in comparison to them.

The tug at her heart was because she knew at any time, on any planet she would never see anything so astounding again.

She would never get to feel THAT.

Because she knew only two people in the Universe were capable of feeling so much, so deeply, so strongly.

And they were sleeping peacefully right in front of her.

Serena smiled as she slipped the door closed as quietly as she could.

Maybe they didn’t have to worry so much.

Max didn’t need to be burdened with the approaching threat of Khivar, he didn’t have to feel so responsible for the Earth’s future.

Liz didn’t have to cry at night because her actions to save the world had cost her best friend his life and it still wasn’t looking good.

Isabel didn’t need to panic about her daughter not getting to grow up. She didn’t have to feel like falling apart and never getting back up again because her brother was in so much pain.

Kyle had his sister back. He would be getting his friend back. Kyle wouldn’t lose his wife.

Serena would get to grow old in this life. With her friends. Her family.

But most importantly.

The most vital reason there was no need for insufferable worrying was because Michael had Maria.

Michael had Maria.

And Maria was HOME.

Re: Better than Roswell, New Mexico (CC, Mature) Part 8 5/11

Post by starcrazed »

Almost two weeks ago…

Part 8

The world almost never changes.

Not for him.

The world manages to keep the status quo in regards to him.

Normal.

For a long time normal meant being alone.

Breaking out of the pod first, wandering the desert alone.

Running from the Evans car, going into the foster system alone.

Even with Max and Isabel their differences kept him separate.

Kept him alone.

There was a brief period when he wasn’t alone.

When the banging on his stone walls was too much to bear.

So he tore open a door and pulled her in, sealing the rest of the world out.

Then he wasn’t alone.

They were alone together.

For that brief millisecond of eternity he was the furthest thing possible from alone.

But he didn’t seal the wall back up properly or some of the cracks she formed never mended.

Because suddenly she had slipped away and he was alone again.

Alone, with all her love for him was worse then just being alone.

He decided to leave the broken pieces of his pathetic self where they were.

She said she didn’t know.

When Michael asked if she would come back to him, she said she didn’t know.

But he could still see her.

The look that passed in her eyes. He saw it all.

He imagined it’s the same look he got whenever he looked at her.

Whenever he thought of her.

She’s his better than Roswell, New Mexico.

The glimmer in her eyes told him, he was hers.

So of course she’ll be back.

The question really becomes when and hopefully, it won’t be too late.

Hopefully the pieces of his former self that lay scattered about him as he’s wrapped in a protective envelop of her love, will fit back together.

Hopefully, it won’t matter because even though she’s gone, he has her love.

And even if he’s in pieces here,

Wherever she goes he’ll be whole.

Because that’s where his heart will be.

Every single shattered piece of it.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The others were shocked when she left.

I wasn’t.

I was hurt that she left without a goodbye.

Shocked she didn’t tell Liz or Amy.

But not surprised she was gone.

All the good I have in me was brought out by Maria.

But there was greatest in Maria before me.

What we are stifled that and she had to go get it back.

As much as it hurts and as much as I hate that she’s doing it, I understand her need to be who she is fully.

She’s never stopped me from being who I am, how could I stop her?

But she was doing it alone.

She’s not supposed to be alone like that.

Neither of us are.

That’s when I realized it would never work.

That’s when I stopped consciously using my powers.

Because she would never reach her dreams out there in the big city all by herself, but she was stubborn enough to stay there until she did.

It would be an empty dream fulfilled, while she was surrounded by strangers.

Meanwhile I stayed in Roswell watching as all my friends’ dreams came true.

As each one was fulfilled I’d picture how hard Maria was struggling with hers.

I’d see mine get a little further from my reach.

First, as the murderous bitch came back with Zan. Max had his son, but was horrified it would cost him Liz. It was probably hard as hell, but Liz can be really stubborn too sometimes. Especially with Max.

She made them a home. They became a family. The three of them.

It wasn’t easy as they juggled jobs and school once Zan returned with Amy and Jim from hiding. It got even harder as they really got involved in the new college life. Liz went full time and worked part time while Max did the opposite. The Evans, Parkers, Valentis even Isabel and Kyle all pitched in to watch Zan while they were at school or work.

Two weeks after freshman year ended though Max and Liz had their wedding.

They were gloriously happy, but it was a sad day.

For them.

For me.

As Max’s best man I walked down the aisle with Isabel.

Not Maria like it should have been.

Isabel cried as she thought of her own failed marriage.

Liz cried because her best friend in the whole world wasn’t there for her wedding day like they had dreamed since they were eight.

I wanted to cry because the picture of my wedding was fading as the first year went by with no Maria.

That’s when I started painting.

Getting Max or Iz to fix something that blew up when my emotions were too much and expressed themselves through my powers was getting tiresome.

I found the warring emotions a different outlet.

I poured everything that I had left in me into my art.

It was something I could be proud of.

Something Maria could be proud of.

It was something I could do for her. Give her more than just aliens, terror, danger, and death.

The paintings didn’t have color.

Not much any way.

The color in my life was across the country.

I had to use what I had in reserves sparingly.

Liz’s updates helped. The first time I cracked a wall when she brought up Maria’s phone call. New York, Music, Billy.

It was out of the blue and I wasn’t ready for it. Plus, Liz was far to close to the emotional storm I barely had controlled.

Liz’s is a smart girl though and realized how I lived for her casually tossed updates about the love of my life.

It may have taken months to pass on one phone conversation, but Liz didn’t leave a thing out.

That’s how I have all three of Maria’s albums.

They added a little color to my artwork.

And with the birth of Coby to Amy and Jim after that first year I was able to paint something other than despair.

Not for show though, only for my walls.

I could still feel her loved wrapped around me.

In every song she sung.

In every detail of Liz’s update.

In every gibberish word Coby uttered.

I had to visualize it, give it form when I couldn’t express it with her.

I had to put it to paper so I couldn’t’ forget.

So I didn’t allow myself to forget.

There wasn’t enough paper in Roswell for her beauty so I used the walls.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I watched as Max and Liz with Zan grew into a family.

I saw Isabel realize her love for Kyle and finally embrace it completely.

I met Serena when Liz brought her over for Christmas at Isabel’s the third year Maria was gone.

She felt familiar. Like Tess.

Immediately I raised my arm, ignoring the fact I haven’t used my powers in three years and would probably destroy Isabel’s immaculate kitchen.

What I am, what we were, wasn’t going to take any thing else from Maria.

Even if she wasn’t here to see.

I would protect it for her.

Like her heart.

Locked away safe within my walls.

When first Liz, then Max stood in front of her I dropped my arm.

I listened as they explained about Future Max and his Serena.

I still wasn’t going to trust the girl.

Then Serena blew us all away with her story of Antar. Of Serena and Rath being in love.

I stared in disbelief yet knowing every word she spoke was true.

Naturally, I trusted her less after that.

A year later, I put up one hell of a fight when baby Becca was born and she was moved into my apartment.

Without my knowing.

I gave it up though when she walked into my study one day.

Before I had a chance to explode she backed out.

She looked me straight in the eye and whispered, “She’s beautiful.”

My mouth dropped in shock.

I glared as her cheeks turned pink.

“I’m sorry for barging into there. But it’s amazing really. I hope I find something like that one day.”

I got defensive, jumping to conclusions about Rath and Serena. She laughed.

“Oh God no! I would never compete with that.”

I watched as she pointed to the now closed door.

“Hell, Rath and Serena wouldn’t even touch that. They respected each other. May have even been in love. But neither of them made the other first priority and they knew it. They had many other important obligations that they put first. The fight, Vilandra, loyalty to the King. Besides you’re a boneheaded neanderthal, I deserve somebody who could create master pieces for me. Like you do for her.”

I watched as she quietly closed her own bedroom door and turned into my study, taking in my ‘masterpiece.’

A humorless laugh escaped in the quiet room.

Sure I created masterpieces for her, but I wanted more.

I wanted it all.

To bicker with her over little things.

To feel her vibes communicating with me.

To hear her voice as she rambled on.

To touch her.

To kiss her.

To love her.

To see her.

It was the last fight I put up. It was too draining, too unfulfilling if the blonde spitfire wasn’t tossing insults back from the other side.

I pulled away slowly, removing myself from their lives. First the kids and adults, then Serena, Kyle, Liz and Max.

Lastly Isabel. Isabel whose heart, I could see tremble every time she looked at me and saw my pain.

Isabel who clings even now for the glimmer of the old Michael.

I was and am so happy for them.

Their dreams.

Their families.

Their love.

But all of it just reinforced how alone I was.

Again.

I no longer watch the stars. No more wild quests to find our alien origins. I used to think those answers would give me what I needed. That they would provide me with my better than Roswell, New Mexico.

Only now do I realize how ridiculous that was.

When I first voiced the thought in that slimy motel room, the answer was staring me in the face with knowing eyes.

Now I look to the east.

Because I was right.

For me, there is something better than Roswell, New Mexico.

She’s sitting in New York City.

Holding another key that has all the answers.

The answers to fix my broken heart.

That for all its flaws loves her like no one else ever will.

Like no one ever can.

My heart that lies useless until she comes back to me.

Because I know she will.

I still have something that belongs to her.

TBC…

Part 9

Michael woke up to the quiet apartment, too quiet apartment.

He rolled over to look at the time, seeing it was almost noon he remember it was Wednesday.

Serena was with her wacko patients all day today.

Michael still didn’t understand how someone who loved to talk so much could sit for hours on end listening to others bitch and moan about all their problems.

Especially when that person had problems involved on an intergalactic scale.

Michael rolled off his bed and went to the bathroom, not worried about seeing any sort of pain or other feelings in the mirror.

He took the mirror down as soon as he moved into the bigger apartment about a year after Max and Liz tied the knot.

It was easier then having to fix it all the time.

Serena still bitched about it.

After his shower Michael hopped on his bike and sped off to his studio.

Cutting off his social life, gave him a lot of time to work. A lot of time to paint.

It made his agent happy. Not that he really cared what Carly thought.

Three hours later, the loud music was suddenly silent.

Michael turned from his easel to find Max looking at him.

He knew the shock was evident on his face because of Max’s raised eyebrow and small smirk.

“Maxwell. Shouldn’t you be at work?”

He gave a shrug as a boyish grin appeared on his face, “I’m picking Liz up from the school and we have a date for early dinner. My parents are taking Zander and Becca.”

Michael turned back to the painting giving the impression of indifference.

Max continued as if Michael had asked a question or even showed a bit of interest.

“She started this new tutoring program with the juniors. Some of her students were having a lot of trouble with the math for physics.”

Michael turned his scowl to Max.

Years of friendship allowed Max to interpret the scowl even if nowadays it was the only expression Michael showed.

“I just wanted to tell you that Iz and Kyle are going out of town for a day or so.”

Michael frowned, as he faced his painting so Max missed this new facial expression. Isabel and Kyle never left Haley alone.

Not if they really didn’t have too.

Max’s next statement had the easel collapsing.

“They’re going to New York.”

OH.

How was Michael supposed to respond to that?

Was he to question if they went for some sight seeing.

Maybe there was another summit meeting and Khivar had demanded Vilandra be the one to show up.

Michael wasn’t stupid. He knew how worried Max was. How concerned Isabel and Liz were about the approaching threat. It increased when Serena first showed up. And even as comfortable as they appeared to be there was a tension in all their bodies constantly.

They were worried about the end of the world.

The end of the world weighted heavily on all of them.

Because there was no Tess.

No Granilith.

There might as well not have been a Michael considering he would be no use with his lack of using his powers these days.

Michael sighed as he turned back to Max, not willing to voice his thoughts.

Isabel went to New York to bring Maria home.

Because Michael was in pain.

Because he was useless how he was.

Because Khivar was coming and they needed him.

And Michael needed Maria

And as long as he was in the state he currently was, Michael was no use to save the world with them.

He said none of this though instead he gave his usually indifferent response, “So.”

Max didn’t even try to hide his eye roll.

“I just thought I’d…warn you I guess.”

Michael turned away again.

“So I’ll just go now.”

He nodded his head and Max paused before leaving.

“They’ll be back for Haley’s party though. You are gonna go right?”

Max watched Michael’s shoulders tense before they relaxed again.

Max stepped forward cautiously, “You should go Michael. Isabel misses you. WE miss you.”

Michael managed not to flinch as Max dropped an arm on his shoulder and sent him a flash

~ Isabel’s concerned brown eyes filled with tears, “Max do you think he’ll come? It’s her birthday. She’s gonna be two and he hasn’t seen her for any length of time since she’s been six months old!” Then Isabel was wrapped in Max’s arms as a tear slide down her face, “I don’t know Iz. He’s not ready.” She pulled back furiously, “He’ll never be ready as long as SHE’S in New York.”~

Michael pulled away as Isabel’s anger slapped him in the face.

“You should go Maxwell.”

Without another word Max left and Michael was left in the silence of his studio.

Alone. It was a state of being he was growing accustomed too. He almost liked it at this point.

The pain of being alone was at least tolerable.

Tolerable because it was something he's felt for far too long.

Michael stayed in the studio until after ten that night.

Max’s visit as much as Michael pretended otherwise had definitely made an impact.

They were going to get Maria.

Would she be happy to see them?

Would she come back to Roswell?

Would she be happy to see him?

Did she even what to see him?

Would she stay?

Had she moved on?

Had she forgotten?

Would she come back to him?

Michael painted until he was exhausted. Then he hauled himself onto his bike and sped home.

He opened the door to the apartment quietly, knowing what he would find on the couch.

He allowed himself a brief smile. Knowing no one could see it. Serena probably didn’t know it, but he had grown to trust her in the past five years. He might even go so far as to say he cared about her as much as he did Liz or Isabel. It was hard not to be effected by her. Living in his apartment. Chatting all the time about his friends, his family who he cut himself off from. Making sure he showered and ate at least on a somewhat regular basis. At the same time she gave him his space.

She understood what he couldn’t put into words. So maybe she did know that she had become a member of his family. Even if he’s never said it. Never shown it.

Serena was asleep on the couch, her beloved infomercials playing on the TV.

Michael grabbed the blanket off the chair and covered her with it, shaking his head as she snuggled deeper into the throw pillow.

He went into his bedroom, bypassing the closed door to his study.

To her beauty locked within it, hidden from him for another day.

Michael crashed onto his bed not bothering to change his clothes.

He closed his eyes, but opened them when her face flashed before his closed lids.

Maria.

Michael didn’t sleep all night as he fidgeting back and forth all night.

Would she come back?

Come back to him?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Michael hit the alarm before it went off.

Not knowing why he even bothered to set alarms. Especially on a Saturday.

He never got up when they went off. He kept his own schedule. His time was his own and no one could demand it of him.

Well as least no one currently in Roswell.

Michael managed to pull his exhausted self from bed, too tired at this point to even attempt to sleep after his sleepless night.

He went to towards the bathroom and scowled when he heard the shower running. He continued on to the kitchen and pulled out a bowl for cereal.

He was on his second bowl and third glass of OJ laced with Tabasco sauce when Serena finally emerged from the shower.

She stopped in her tracks when she found him at the table.

“You’re up early.”

Michael shrugged continuing to shovel cereal in his mouth.

Serena examined the dark circles under his eyes and the weariness in his muscles.

“You didn’t sleep. Again?”

Michael ignored her.

“God Michael you can’t keep doing that. Six hours of sleep in three days is going to kill you.”

He allowed his dark brown eyes to glance up and briefly meet her stormy blue eyes.

Michael had to hold back a smirk as her eyes rolled back in frustration and she threw up her hands getting her own bowl out.

“Whatever Michael.”

They ate in silence. Serena reading the back of the cereal box while Michael polished off his third bowl planning his day mentally.

Saturday. Michael went to the park on Saturdays. He went to the park and sketched all the life around him. So young, innocent, hopeful, filled with dreams. He captured it all in his notebook.

As Michael stood up Serena spoke, “We’re all going to Max and Liz’s tonight. For pizza. You should come.”

Michael let his eyes meet hers again.

Serena was a bit surprised, that was twice in one day. Hell, it was twice in less then an hour.

She sighed, “Fine, but just so you know. That’s where we’ll be.”

Michael took a quick shower and then headed to the park.

It was cold out.

Colder out then it had been all year so far.

He pulled his jacket tighter as he sat on his bench.

It was still pretty empty in the park.

A woman walking her dog.

A few joggers.

An old couple walking.

Michael sketched the couple first. Catching the lines of their faces, their fragile bodies, their tight grasp on the other's hand.

Then he sketched the woman as the dog licked at her face. He turned his attention, as two joggers collide with each other. He watched as they sat up, caught each others gaze and fell in love. Michael captured it all on paper.

Three hours later, the first kids showed up at the park. Accompanied by their mother.

The petite woman with long brown hair, her eyes, pools of brown filled with pain and an understanding Michael knew too much about.

She sat down as the little girl ran up the slide and the boy kicked off the ground from his swing.

“Hey, Michael.”

He gave a brief nod as he flipped a page of his notebook and stenciled the joy on Becca’s face as she flew down the slide. The laughter in Zan’s eyes as he tilted his head back and swung higher.

“I’m nervous Michael. I’m so scared she won’t come home.”

Michael paused briefly in his sketch before flipping another page and drawing Liz from the corner of his eye.

“Are you scared she won’t come home?”

Michael looked up, watching as Zan jumped off the swing and chased a shrieking Becca.

“All the time.”

He looked back to his notebook and continued to draw the big sad brown eyes of Liz as she happily watched Zan catch Becca and tickle her until she slipped away and ran for the slide again.

Liz was silent after that, having already broken the routine by speaking more then her usual greeting. To her credit though, when Michael actually answered her she hid her shock. It was a real answer, not just a grunt or a scowl like they were all so used to, actually words loaded with emotions.

When Becca ran over an hour later Michael stopped his sketching again and watched as she hopped onto the bench between him and Liz.

First, as always, she leaned closer to Michael, without touching him, “Let me see.”

Michael pulled his notebook to his chest. He didn’t look, but he could feel the amber eyes she shared with her father and brother digging holes into him.

“Pleasssseee, Unca Mike.”

Michael gave an exaggerated sigh and Becca giggled. By now Zan had joined them and was waiting patiently as Michael flipped back through the pictures.

He showed them the old couple, and then by passed the rest until he got to Becca on the slide and Zan on the swings.

A gust of wind blew and a few pages flipped over until the picture of Zan catching Becca and tickling her was showing.

Becca laughed and Zan smiled with pride. Michael watched them all out of the corner of his eye. He saw Liz’s smile of absolute joy. He wondered what Max would think of the scene.

Their routine finished Becca stood up and took Liz’s hand.

“I’m hungry momma.”

Liz nodded and stood. “Bye Michael.”

She reached for Zan’s hand but was surprised to find Michael ripping the page from his note book and offering it up to her.

She took it smiling, even though he wouldn’t meet her gaze.

“Thanks Michael.”

He gave a brief nod.

“Say goodbye kids.”

Zan and Becca sounded off, “Goodbye Uncle Michael.”

Michael watched as they walked out of the park. Zan trailing a little ahead of Becca and Liz.

After Michael’s visit from the Evans’ family the park was a bust for the rest of the day.

It was too cold for the usual kids to come and hang out. Parents had their kids inside safe and entertained with the TV.

Michael wandered around the town for a few hours. Stopping in Amy’s shop right before closing time like he was supposed to.

He walked up and down the aisle looking at merchandise he had long ago memorized.

Amy came out of the back room carrying a box; Michael took it form her arms startling her.

“OH, Michael. Thanks. You can just set it on the counter.”

Michael did as he was told and then leaned back against it.

“How are you? I trust that you’re eating. Sleeping?”

Michael avoided her gaze, more then usual.

“Michael!”

He shrugged. Just because she threaten him with bodily harm if he continued to avoid her didn’t mean he had to have full blown conversations with her.

“Alright, I suppose we all have our off days.”

They headed out the door. Michael walking Amy towards the newer, but still red Jetta. He glared at the car as if it caused him personal injury.

Amy chuckled like she did every Saturday to Michael’s interaction with her car.

It never ceased to amaze her that her Jetta could get more of a reaction out of him sometimes then his own friends and family could.

She opened her door and stopped before climbing in, “You should go to Haley’s party. It would mean a lot to Isabel.”

Michael shuffled on his feet.

“Okay Michael, I’ll see you next week then.”

He gave a brief nod and then headed to his truck as the Jetta sped off.

It was nice to have both the truck and his bike. He loved his bike, but sometimes it was just too cold out. And sometimes he needed to transport his paintings and he couldn’t do that on the bike. So he had bought himself a truck after his first few paintings sold really well.

When he got back to the apartment, he noted Serena was in her room. He took a seat on the couch and turned on a hockey game. Two hours later when it was over and he had a small dinner he got in the shower to wash away the grim and emotions of the day.

As he turned the water off he heard the apartment door slam shut informing him that Serena was gone for the evening to Max and Liz’s.

He walked to his room clad only in a towel, noting that it was almost eight and Serena would definitely be late.

After changing he headed for his study noticing something was off, but not knowing what it was right away.

Fifteen minutes later he was cursing under his breath as he pulled on his jeans and double checked the living room to make sure he hadn’t moved his CDs at some point yesterday.

He even checked his bedroom, even though there was no place to play his CDs in there.

He was pulling his coat back on and grabbing his car keys thirty minutes later.

It took him twice as long as usually to get to the Evans. He caught ever red light on the way there and it seemed to be a night for the worst drivers to be out.

Michael barely parked the truck before he was yanking the keys out and charging up the front lawn of Max and Liz’s two story home.

He knew the door would be unlocked so he didn’t bother knocking; rather he tossed it open like it was cardboard.

He stopped his forward motion when he saw Max drop his arm and he demanded,

“Where is she?”

Michael followed the direction Max pointed and headed for the living room. He didn’t even pause to take in the occupants before shouting,

“What the HELL did you do with my METALLICA CDs!?!?”

Michael took in their stillness. They looked far too shocked, almost scared. They wouldn’t be scared of him.

The stillness only grew and it disturbed him.

He realizes it was focused to his right. As he turns he vaguely notices that the rest of the room is holding their breath.

As his brown eyes meet her bright green ones he finally acknowledges the tingle in the back of his mind that began the moment he opened the door and he was exposed to her vibes.

He couldn’t stop his own emotions from escaping as each one hit him like a tidal wave.

The good ones as brilliantly blindly as they had always been.

The bad ones as fresh as the first day she was gone.

Joy because she was here. She had left New York, given up her stubborn act.

The joy was short lived as the pain twisted in his gut.

She was right there. A breath away. He could reach out an arm and touch her, but he didn’t dare. The distance was so much greater than an arms length.

That she was so close and he couldn’t have her. Couldn’t trust her not to slip from his very grasp again pained him.

A pain he was all too familiar with these past eight years.

It was the pain so deep it was hard to breathe sometimes.

The familiar waves of pain washed over him and he was reminded of how tired he was. Too many emotions and not enough sleep.

Once the pain was bearable, a sadness filled him as he thought of all the years lost. All the days wasted, every hour ignored. So much time, just gone. Never to be lived.

Then he started to doubt. He couldn’t believe after so many minutes without her she was finally sitting right in front of him.

Gazing up at him, her own eyes filled with so many feelings.

Happiness.

Sorrow.

Regret.

Caution.

Worry.

Her concern irked him, stirred in him emotions he had thought died with her absences. A challenge filled his gaze and he saw her humor in response.

It was the understanding in her eyes of every emotion he felt that weakened his newly constructed walls and allowed that last one to escape.

A look he couldn’t have kept from her if he tried.

All the walls in the world couldn’t hide from her the very thing she had left encompassing him in.

The only thing from Roswell she took with her.

Love.

His love.

Michael watched as her bright green eyes began to twinkle with the very love he longed for the past eight years.

But then he blinked closing off all the emotions that were cascading throughout the room.

As she closed her eyes to blink he turned and fled.

Slamming the door closed, just as he crashed it open.

Never noticing the crack in the hall mirror in his hasty retreat from all he’s wanted, every second of everyday for the past eight years.

TBC…

Lyrics from Ben Harper’s “Amen Omen”

Part 10

Michael cursed as his CD ended and the radio kicked on. Not daring to remove his hands from the steering wheel. He clutched the wheel till his knuckles were white and knew if he moved his hand it would shake uncontrollably. He couldn’t handle that. So he drove as the words washed over him for a song he never heard, but felt to the very bottom of his soul.

What started as a whisper
Slowly turned into a scream
Searching for an answer
Where the question is unseen
I don't know where you came from
And I don't know where you've gone
Old friends become old strangers
Between the darkness and the dawn

Amen omen
Will I see your face again
Amen omen
Can I find the place within
To live my life without you

Could he live without Maria? HA. The car drifted into another line as the thought distracted him. Only the loud horn from the oncoming car had Michael yanking the wheel back to the right. He focused more on the road as he drove unseeing to the location.

I still hear you saying
All of life is a chance
And is sweetest
When at a glance
But I live a hundred
Lifetimes in a day
But I die a little
In every breath that I take

When he got there he parked the car and opened the door stumbling out. Leaving the door open as the music filled the silent night. Michael knew all too much about dying as he tried to breathe.

He dropped to his knees, the gravel of the quarry digging into him. He ignored it as he placed his hands on the ground and released the power bubbling within.

His body shook as the ground trembled.

Amen omen
Will I see your face again
Amen omen
Can I find the strength within
To live my life without you

He pulled back when the ground cracked. It wasn’t enough though. He looked frantically for a boulder as he stood. He blasted one the size of a small car. Then focused as he put it back together.

I listen to a whisper
Slowly drift away
Silence is the loudest
Parting word you never say
I put your world
Into my veins
Now a voiceless sympathy
Is all that remains

The energy coming off his body still had him shaking as he fell to the ground again and focused on repairing the damage his power had caused. As the quarry floor sealed beneath his hands he dragged his exhausted self to the truck. He pulled the door shut and dropped his head to the wheel. His body shivering from the cold, the emotion, the loss of power.

Amen omen
Will I see your face again
Amen omen
Can I find the place within
To live my life without you

The song ended and Michael snapped the radio off before another song could tear into his soul.

An hour later he found the strength to start his truck and drive home. He barely made it to his bed though before he fell asleep.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Michael didn’t have to worry about sunlight waking him in the morning. He had his dark blinds drawn so it was well after two o’clock when he finally cracked his eyes open.

His body still drained from using so much power after so long.

He stumbled his way to the bathroom and turned on the hot water waiting until the room was filled with steam before he stepped in.

The water burned his skin but he enjoyed the physical pain. It was a relief after so much emotional exhaustion.

When he finished he takes notice that Serena is quiet in the kitchen as he fixes himself a sandwich.

He doesn’t say a word and neither does she.

When he finishes he locks himself away in his study to paint. It would take too much effort to go to the studio. And there was a chance anyone could find him there. He could run into a hundred people on the way there. Only one really concerned him though.

He found his Metallica CDs resting in a neat pile on his desk and he gave them a dirty look for the trouble they caused him yesterday.

It didn’t stop him from playing them, as loudly as possible.

He pulled out his extra easel and grabbed a few paints, ignoring the fact that every one of them was a color and not black or gray.

He was working on his third painting, the crack on the quarry floor, when he hears the banging on his door.

Michael cringes at the thought of people. Dealing with another human while all these thoughts are swirling in his head isn't a good idea. It's just not gonna happen. She should know better.

“Go Away Serena!!”

At the second knock Michael merely turns the music louder ignoring the concern that he was going to blow out his speakers.

When the knock came a third time Michael closed his eyes and cursed under his breath. He turned the sound off.

With the music off even he heard the tremble in his voice.

“Serena, leave me alone.”

At the soft knock that followed Michael’s eyes popped open. He’s heard that knock before. So long ago it seems. When Max and Liz had gone missing only to return with the orb.

He walked to the door and rested his head against it, feeling her vibes even through the door that separated them.

“What are you doing here?”

He held his breath as he waiting for an answer. The answer she gave pissed him off.

“I came back.” Her voice was filled with tears but Michael didn’t care as he tore the door open, only to have her fall into his chest.

His breath caught and he carefully removed her before he forgot his anger. Before he forgot everything except the fact that she was touching him. He closed himself off, tried to at least as he corrected her.

“You didn’t COME BACK.”

He watched as her beautiful green eyes filled with confusion a moment before they widen with realization and a hint of regret.

“What are you doing here, Maria?”

He wanted to take it back the moment he said her name. His own body betrayed him as it left his lips. He should at least be able to have control over his own body. But now he watched as a third party as it leaned towards her against his will and reached out to wipe away the tear tracks on her porcelain cheek. Obviously her collision with his chest wasn’t enough torture and his body wanted to induce more for him.

He managed to find his voice again as his traitorous body acted against him.

“Why are you here?”

He pulled away finally gaining control or at least realizing he was a second away from taking a step he wasn’t ready to take. She was right there, but still so far away.

“I had to.”

Had too. That’s a laugh. And he did. The foreign sound escaped him surprising himself.

“Why because Isabel and Kyle went to New York and dragged you here?”

He needed her to react. Seeing her again was wonderful. But watching her in hesitation around him hurt. He needed her angry. An angry Maria he knew how to deal with.

“No Michael. They didn’t have to DRAG me anywhere. I WANTED to come.”

He strained to hear the rest, “I’ve wanted to come back for sooo long. I’ve needed to be with…home. I needed to be home.”

Michael caught her slip. The joy was instantaneous. He fought the swirl of passion that began to simmer in his gut. It was a losing battle so he turned away from her face to his study, probably a mistake sense it was a physical reminder of her love, but he needed the space.

He heard her gasp of awe. It was something he understood well. The amazement that her love, their love could be so beautiful. That she could be so beautiful.

“Michael they’re beautiful.”

His thoughts from a moment ago escaped before he could stop them.

“They’re you.” Realizing his own slip he searched for a cover.

“Roswell’s not you’re home.”

Good going moron. That will divert the attention from in-depth, heart wrenching conversations. He mentally groaned at his own stupidity.

He wondered if she would admit it.

At first she didn’t say a word.

But Michael could see her.

She always let him see her.

And the answer was in her emerald gaze.

Just in case he’d forgotten though, she spoke,

“No, it’s not.”

Moments passed in silence. Not awkward, but they sure as hell weren’t fun. He wanted to do more then take her in, more then just memorize every feature that had changed and thrive in every feature that was exactly the same.

Michael was about to start pacing when she spoke.

“I’m not going anywhere Michael.”

Michael saw the statement for what it was.

An effort to get him to trust her again. Disbelief that she would go about it in such a manner showed in his face.

Michael watched her walking away. She was walking away again.

But it was so much different from the last time.

“It would be really great to see you tomorrow Michael.”

It was unnecessary really; he decided he would be going the second she said he should go.

Her whispered plea before she fled only served to twist his heart a little bit more.

“They miss you. We ALL miss you.”

He followed her even as she ran with her back to him.

He ignored the windows and glass objects rattling. He defiantly raised his arm and shattered his beloved TV.

By then he heard her car speeding away so he dropped to the couch.

Glazing thoughtfully at the broken TV, scattered across the floor in so many pieces.

Just like his heart.

“I’ve missed them too. I’ve missed you.”

It was an admission he could admit to himself. But not to her. Not yet. She said she wasn’t going anywhere.

Well Michael would see about that.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Michael woke at noon the next day. He probably would of slept longer but Serena was banging around the kitchen like nobody’s business.

He stomped out there to yell at her.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Well aren’t we cheerful this morning.”

“Well sure now that I have my CDs back.”

He saw her smirk even as she ducked back in the refrigerator to hide it.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Like hell you don’t.”

“Whatever Michael. I need to think of something to get Haley for her birthday. What do two year olds like?”

She turned to see him staring at her.

“Right, why on Earth would you know. Sheesh, I’m going to the mall to get her something. I’ll see you when I get home tonight. Maybe I’ll bring you some cake.”

Michael made no effort to correct her as she left the apartment in a breeze.

Present?

Shit.

Michael got into the shower and then headed to the studio in his truck.

He had a painting he had to finish before…what time was the party?

Damn Maria.

He opened the door to his studio and found the painting right where he left it. Set up on the easel. It was the last on he did that day Max came to visit him, but he didn’t finish it. And now he needed it for her present.

Haley always got presents from him. Even if he himself couldn’t work up the strength to make an appearance.

An appearance. He should probably do something about his probably get rid of this scratchy beard.

He could use some new clothes too… As he completed the thought he shook his head in disgust.

She wasn’t even back for a full day yet an already he adjusting his habits. Damn that woman.

Then he smiled a real, full out Michael Guerin smile. What a woman she was.

Michael seemed to realize he was grinning like a fool alone in his studio and wiped the grin from his face as he reached for the pastel paints he had.

Haley liked pink right? She was a girl, most little girls like pink. Oh well Isabel would like it.

As he finished, he waved a hand over the painting drying it instantly. He flipped it over and singed his name and scribbled the title of the work.

He turned it back over and seemed to realize what he just did.

He stared at his hand then and shook his head in disbelief.

Then he wiggled his fingers, impressed with the control he had despite eight years lack of constant, intentional use.

But he should know better, she always did have that effect on him.

Wrapping up the painting he hefted it under his arm and carried it out the door with him, pausing only to lock the door.

He carefully laid the painting in the back of the truck and then turned his car towards the mall.

Two hours later he had a hair cut and a new wardrobe. Isabel would be proud.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

He saw that it was almost six so he ran back to the apartment to get ready before driving over to Isabel’s.

Michael noticed the evil red Jetta, as well as Phillip and Dianne Evans car parked on the street. He parked his truck across the street and carefully took out the painting. Walking up to the front door he was careful not to trample on the grass, knowing Isabel would kill him for it.

He rang the doorbell and ran a frustrated hand through his hair before the door swung up to reveal a stunning beauty on the other side. Not that Maria could be anything else.

He gulped as he notice the jeans clinging to her curves and the black sweater acting like a second skin.

“You’re here.”

Crap was he too early, he nodded his head, “You ah… didn’t mention a time so…”

“No, this is perfect.”

No need to tell him that. Michael internally cringed at the adulterous thought. First his body was out of control around her, now his mind. It was nothing new really so he didn’t know why he was surprised.

“So can I come in or…?”

Michael almost laughed as she turned red and ushered him inside, “Oh my god!” He closed the door behind him and looked around Isabel’s perfect house, searching for something that would distract him from staring at her. Vaguely, he registered her pointing and talking,

“What’s that?”

Michael pulled his attention to her completely away from the family pictures over the fireplace, “Haley’s present.”

What else would it be?

“Oh. Well we’re putting the presents over here in the living room so…”

Michael picked up on the pronoun use, “We’re?” He was impressed as she turned even more red.

“Yeah, I was helping Isabel plan so…” Michael stuck his present in the back and was about to ask if Isabel was a Birthday Nazi too when he heard Maria’s question. The hint of jealousy pleased him, even if it shouldn’t have.

“Where’s Serena?” He was going to ignore the question anyways, but was further saved from answering as Isabel came in the room.

“Maria who was at the door…Michael?”

Michael captured Izzie’s soft brown gaze slowly filling with tears.

“Hey Izzie.”

As she stifled her sob Michael saw her frozen in place not about to go anywhere so he took the liberty to cross the distance between them and wrap her in a hug. Hell it was the least he could do after abandoning his family for so long.

As she clung to him he whispered words he wished didn’t need to be said to apologize for actions he wanted to take back.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been around Iz. Sorry that I hurt you because of my pain. Sorry that I’ve missed so much of Hales growing up, but I’m here now. I’m trying.”

And he would continue to try if it killed him. If she left again, Michael was still going to try with his family because he couldn’t bear another eight years like the past eight years.

The tears soaked his t-shirt as Isabel nodded into his shoulder. He was surprised suddenly to find Max squeezing his way into the hug. Michael hadn’t even heard the doorbell.

As Max wrapped one arm around Michael and the other around Isabel, Michael continued with his apology, not sure if he could actually say the word sorry one more time, but knowing Max would get him.

“We okay Maxwell?”

The heavy weight Michael had been carrying around lifted at Max’s response, “Of course Brother. Now we’re good.”

Brother.

God Michael was a fool to let his pain take everything away from him.

In one move not only did he lose his heart, he allowed himself to lose his family.

Never again.

Michael briefly noted Liz and Maria walking into the kitchen as Isabel pulled him down onto the couch.

He didn’t notice Kyle come down the stairs, but he saw him head into the kitchen after opening the door to Serena. Michael was in a daze smiling as Isabel rattled on and on about something and Max made comments every now and then.

It was almost too much, the joy in Isabel’s eyes and the relief in Max’s gave Michael a sense of guilt for invoking such feelings in two of the people that mean the most to him. Their smiles made him feel very worthy and at the same time like a scumbag. Something as simple as his presences shouldn’t be worth a smile like Isabel was currently sporting.

But it really had been a long time since Michael voluntarily came around all it took was seeing him again with his family to make her happy.

Before he knew it Isabel was up in a panic rushing to the kitchen and Max and him shared a knowing look and an eye roll.

Max sent him a smile before standing. A smile that reassured Michael that everything would be okay now. A smile that Michael had missed very much.

He found himself leaning in the doorway to the dining room watching Isabel as she scrambled around being the perfect hostess and Kyle sent warning looks to the other guests. Suddenly he felt a gentle tug on his shirt.

He looked down to find the hurt eyes of his salvation so long ago. He couldn’t help but squat down to his level noting how much he had grown since the last time they spent time together.

“What’s up Coby?”

“You haven’t been around in a while.”

It was another twist to the knife already lodged in his gut. The guilt just kept coming and coming. Michael thought part of him deserved all the guilt for hurting all his loved ones for so long. He would just have to work to move past it as he worked at becoming a constant presences in their lives again.

“No, I haven’t. I’m sorry I’ve been a real bum Coby.”

He watched as Coby half shrugged, “It’s otay. I missed you though.”

He smirked at that comment allowing Coby to bring out a bit of happiness, “I missed you too buddy.”

Michael watched fascinated as the eyes that were so familiar to a pair he fell in love with so long ago became equally expressive for a moment. He watched as the small boy smiled and his eyes lit up with joy, but the a worried expression took over as he spoke.

“I lost that picture you made me. The one with me in the baseball uniform. Can you draw me another one?”

Stopping himself from laughing he responded immediately “Sure Coby.”

If only everything could be fixed so easily.

He messed up Coby’s hair and stood up swinging the boy up into his arms and carrying the screeching kid into the dinning room, only setting him down when Isabel and Amy started yelling at him.

He plopped him down in a chair next to Amy and then dropped down in the open seat next to him at Coby’s request.

He tried not to noticed Maria’s prolonged absences as he got engrossed in Coby’s tales of baseball and it was working fairly well until she entered the room laughing.

Her green eyes were filled with delight. He was so mesmerized by the sight he missed Kyle’s impression.

More importantly he missed the knowing look Amy sent him and the smile the graced her face.

He failed to witness the interactions of the youngest Evans couple too as Maria continued to laugh bringing a hand to cover her chest.

As Serena was sending silent thanks up into the air Michael was trying to remember how important it was for him to breath.

It wasn’t until Isabel was in front of him asking for his plate with a smile so blinding that he began to think that he missed something.

As the laughter and carefree attitude continued he realized he missed the beginning of a brand new start for all of them, but he swore to himself he’d be damned if he missed anything else.
