Liz looked around the room that she grew up in; it was now a guest room. Her hand skimmed the bedspread; it brought back a flood of memories. Some were happy, some sad, but all were cherished.
A blush grew as she thought back to one of her first days back from New York. Zan had decided that they needed to christen the bed while her father was out. Liz was pretty certain he knew what had happened, a giggle tickled the back of her throat, it would explain all the hostility he seemed to have towards Zan. It could also be that Zan was Max’s ‘twin’, that mere fact had her father worried that Zan was going to pull a ‘Max’ and break her heart.
She looked over at the vanity; a wedding dress was draped to the side of the mirror. Liz took in the reflection of the strange young woman in her underwear. This woman wasn’t the Liz she had grown up knowing; this strange creature staring back at her was going to be a married woman in less than three hours. Elizabeth Claudia Antar had a ring to it.
A knock on the door startled Liz from her musings. “One second!” She grabbed the robe from the back of a chair. She slipped it on, and pulled open the door.
Maria slinked into the room. Her blond hair was in curlers and was wearing giant Jackie O sunglasses. A garment bag slung over one arm. “Hey chica. Ready to make history?”
“Why weren’t you at the Hen Party? You left a very cryptic message about having to make sure a problem was taken care of. You’re lucky Ava jumps into command when Zan not around.” Liz stared at the Maid of Honor.
“We’re going to need Ava’s makeup bag.” Maria winced as she spoke. She hung up the garment bag on one of the hooks on the back of the door.
“Ava’s make-up bag of doom?” Liz shuddered. “I’m officially worried.” Liz’s hand was held out to Maria.
Maria dug out her cellphone and handed it over.
The number was typed with a careless ease. Liz hadn’t even looked at the phone as she dialed. As the phone started to ring, she placed it to her ear.
“Hey Ava, we’re going to need the Doom bag. What do you mean it’s in your car and you’re on your way? Isn’t this your home phone?” Liz’s question had puzzled tone. “You’ve what?!”
Maria giggled. “What did Ava do now?”
“Fine, if you are going to be that way, we’ll talk when you get here!” Liz said indignantly.
“What did she do?” Maria implored.
“Ava had her home phone number transferred to a cell phone, then cancelled their land line.” Liz shrugged.
“And why do you care?” Maria was disappointed that it wasn’t something more Czechoslovakian.
“Everyone is expecting me to be freaking out. I knew if I gave Ava a bit of hell it would get her here faster.” Liz giggled.
“In less then three hours, you are going to be Mrs. Zan Antar. How does that make you feel?” Maria poked at Liz.
Liz looked over at Amy, grateful, when she took that moment to walk in. The poking would have ended in play fighting. Liz knew that Maria wasn’t always so open to her relationship with Zan. The fights over the phone when Liz was living New York were anything but playful.
“Maria, why are you wearing sunglasses indoors?” Amy demanded. “And neither of you are dressed. You do realize that there is less then three hours till the wedding. We have to do make up and put on dresses. And most importantly, we have to coo at the bride for a few minutes.”
Maria sighed, and pulled down her sunglasses. The glasses had hid a black eye.
“What happened?” Amy gasped. “I don’t know how you’re going to cover that with makeup.”
“Is this why you missed the Hen Party?” Liz moved forward to get a better look at Maria’s eye.
“Actually, the reason I got this was why I didn’t go the Hen Party.” Maria bit her lip.
“What did you do?” Liz’s eyes narrowed.
“I gave Isabel a piece of my mind… and fist.” Maria smirked. “You should see her. The Ice Bitch has two black eyes, and a broken nose! If I remember correctly I split her lip too.”
“You are way too proud of yourself.” Liz laughed. “You didn’t have to defend my honor.”
“Please!” Maria waved a hand at Liz. “I went there to kick her prissy ass. Michael went there to defend your honor.”
“You dragged Michael into this? Did the whole Bachelor Party go?” Liz placed a hand to her face.
“Yeah, right! Kyle and Zan were attached to Ava’s big screen watching some sport that shouldn’t be a sport, like curling or something.” Maria rolled her eyes, and then winced. “Remind me not to do that.”
Amy shook her head and walked out muttering something about trying to find industrial strength foundation this late in the game.
“Oh, just for future reference, we can’t eat at Senior Chow’s for about six months. Well, you can, but I’m banned.” Maria laughed.
“You fought Isabel in the middle of Senior Chow’s?” Liz tried to contain her laughter. “Why Senior Chow’s?”
“Because her Czechoslovakian ass can’t get healed by Max, there were too many people there.” Maria giggled.
“Please tell me that Michael convinced them not to come to the wedding.” Liz groaned.
“I can’t confirm or deny anything that I have no control of.” Maria shook her head.
Liz looked like she was going to cry, when a knock came from the bedroom door.
“Hey Cornball! Nice shiner, Drama Queen.” Ava popped into the bedroom, holding a garment bag and a duffel bag. “This is why you ragging?” Ava motioned from Liz to Maria’s eye, dropping the duffle bag on the ground.
“Ava, you know I was just giving you hell. After the comment last night about how I was the scariest bride you’ve ever seen, I had to go all Bridezillia.” Liz laughed, as Ava hung up her dress next to Maria’s.
“You are! You pulled together a wedding in a short period of time. I’m still amazed Zan was willing to get married in general. But you’ve pulled this together in four months, and are complete calm. Mind you, the color coded schedule and pie chart on how this was getting done was a little much.” Ava shook her head. “I was expecting you to freak about something.”
“The only thing I had a moment with was when I realized mom wasn’t going to be here for it. She would have hated Zan. Dad might have been more open to the relationship. He seemed to take my growing up better then my mom did.” Liz could feel her eyes fill with tears. “We didn’t get along, but I miss her.”
“Oh chica!” Maria threw her arms around Liz.
“Stop crying, I can’t work with a wet canvas.” Ava wanted to pull Liz into her arms as well. She held back, knowing that Liz would be unable to hold back the tears if she did.
“Aye, aye, Captain!” Liz smiled blinking back the tears. She extracted herself from Maria’s embrace to sit down. “I think Maria should go first. She needs your magic.”
Ava motioned to Maria to sit on a chair, and then placed the duffle bag on the bed. “You are so lucky I seem to have every color scheme under the sun.”
Liz pointed to the door. “I want to make sure your mom knows we have the makeup covered, so to speak.” With that said, she slipped out to the living room.
Maria looked up as Ava started to work at hiding the black eye. “I’m proud of you, Drama.” Ava murmured softly.
“It was my pleasure. I might not have been thrilled by the relationship in the beginning, but he’s good to her. Liz is happier then I’ve seen her in a long time. I forgot what the sparkle in her eyes looked like. I never noticed that after a while with Max, it died.” Maria spoke sadly. “I just wanted it to be the way it was; Max and Liz with their ‘look into their souls’ glaze. After Liz ran to New York, I made a lot of mistakes with her on the Max and Zan front. It kind of reflected how I treated my relationship with Michael. I’m glad I was able to save Liz’s and my friendship. It helped me realize Michael and I are better friends, then lovers.” Maria paused, "Remember this, Gothic Chic, we never had this talk.”
“My lips are sealed. I’m just making you look decent for Liz’s wedding. Believe me, that takes a lot of work, Drama Queen.” Ava smirked. She placed the final touches on Maria, and stepped back. “I’s done.”
“I’m glad we have that understanding, Gothic Chic.” Maria smiled back, and looked in the mirror. “Adequate job.”
Liz walked in, pulling Amy in. “See, I told you there was no blood shed. Ava’s magic made it look like Maria never got into a fight.”
“I’m amazed.” Amy smiled. “But I think it’s the Bride’s turn.”
Liz braced herself, and sat down. “No wild stuff, Aves.”
“Baby Girl, you are totally not fun.” Ava smiled. Grabbing Maria’s dress, she pushed it into Amy’s arms. “Take your kid and dress her, please. I’m an artist, and I need to work on my masterpiece.”
Liz waved to Amy and Maria, as they left the room. “Are the guys at the church?” Liz looked over at Ava worried, as soon as the door closed.
“Zan isn’t going to get cold feet. If he does, Kyle and Michael have orders.” Ava winked. “I told them if they didn’t fix it, Seki was going to find Kyle fair game.”
“How does that work for Michael? He’ll let Kyle get hit on by Seki.” Liz tried not to show any emotion as Ava started to put on the make-up.
“I explained that I would let Seki know that Michael was very much in the closet, but would love to have Seki help him come out.” Ava’s evil smile reminded Liz of a shark. “Ok, I’m going to put a shield up on your face so we can pull the dress on.” Ava grabbed the wedding dress from the mirror. “I don’t need the dress to screw up the makeup job I’ve just finished.”
Liz held her breath as Ava placed the shield over her face. She raised her hands as Ava dropped the dress over Liz’s head.
Ava dropped the shield, and smiled. With couple of tugs of the corset strings and tying them off, she twirled the bride to look in the mirror. “He’s going to drop dead when he sees you in this.”
Liz felt self-conscious in the silken white dress. It was an off the shoulders corset top with an A-line skirt. She felt all the comments Isabel had made, come back. “Maybe white wasn’t such a good color.”
“Please! Don’t let Isabitch get to you. You are going to rock the entire wedding to their socks. I only see one problem.” Ava smirked, the shark glint was back.
“It’s too revealing, isn’t it.” Liz bit her lip.
“Stop biting your lip! I just put lipstick on it! It’s not too revealing… Well except for your father’s taste. But dads are like that, from what I’ve heard.” Ava shook a finger in the air. “The only problem I see is that I might have to get a hose for Zan. Water seems to be the only thing that keeps that man off you. Maybe your father could help with a shotgun.”
“Dad doesn’t have a shotgun, thankfully.” Liz smiled softly. “You think he’ll like it?”
Ava shook her head. Zan was very honest about his lust for Liz, and yet she still doubted that she could be sexy. “You, Cornball, are a nut. The man practically humps you in front of company, and you can’t tell he’ll like this?”
“Oh, Liz!” Amy held a hand to her mouth as she walked in. “You look so beautiful.” She could feel the tears well in her eyes. “I’m sorry your mother couldn’t be here for this. She would be so proud of her little girl. I’ve always thought of you as a second daughter, and I know I am.”
Maria rushed in after her mom, and gathered Liz into her arms. “Chica, you are the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen.”
“And to think, we haven’t even put on the veil.” Ava poked at Maria. “Drama, let her go. Your mom has to play with Liz’s hair. I’ll be in the bathroom putting on my dress.”
The garment bag and duffle bag were quickly grabbed, as Ava walked toward the bathroom. “I’ll do my makeup and hair in there too.”
Amy patted Ava’s should as she walked past. “Ok, Liz, time to make your hair match the look.” She plugged in a curling iron.
Maria pulled out the veil from closet. “You are going to drive Zan nuts.”
“Is everyone decent?” Jeff Parker’s voice rang from outside of the room.
“We’re all dressed, but I can’t promise I’ve ever been decent, Jeff.” Amy called back.
Jeff walked into the room. “Oh god, Lizzie. You are the prettiest bride.” Pride and tears filled his eyes. “I’m so proud of you.”
“Daddy, I love you too.” Liz gave a teary smile.
“Jeff, the curling iron is hot. I need time with your daughter’s hair. Go check with the church and make sure the guys got there ok.” Amy shooed Jeff out of the room. As he left, Amy turned back to the two girls. “I thought he was going to get you in tears, and we’d never fix your makeup in time.”
“Please, Mom, Liz is getting married. She’s allowed the water works.” Maria raised a hand to Amy.
“No, your mom’s right. Ava will never forgive me if I mess with her paint job.” Liz smiled.
Amy went to work at putting curls into Liz’s hair, as Ava walked back into the room. “I missed Jeff, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, he wanted to see his little girl.” Amy looked confused.
“Dad unnerves Ava.” Liz explained.
“He’s never accidently called me Tess. He’s been supportive and stuff. I’m not sure how to take that.” Ava shook her head.
“My dad has sort of adopted Ava as an extra daughter.” Liz smiled softly.
“Let’s stop talking about me. I think we need to be getting your veil on and you to the chapel.” Ava glared.
“Yes Mom.” Liz mocked. She turned to look in the mirror as Amy fixed the veil to Liz’s head. Her eyes went wide at the sight.
“You are a vision, Liz.” Amy whispered loudly. “Now let’s get you to your soon-to-be-husband.”
