Disclaimer: Standard disclaimer. Borrowing Max Evans, Liz Parker, and a few other Roswell characters who don’t belong to me.

Second disclaimer: I began writing this story a long time ago. I was just about to start posting it, when someone else posted a story with the same title (I can’t remember what board it was on). I thought over new titles, which I didn’t want to do because I felt the title was integral to the story, so I put this fic aside while I wrote Maxeo and Lizziet. Now that I’ve taken this story up again, I can’t find that other story anywhere (I think it was a Zan fic) so I don’t know who to give title credit to. I’m going to use the title I started with, and hope I don’t step on any toes.
Summary: This story is a first for me. It’s totally AU, with NO aliens.

(Edited to add: This fic is lighter, on the fluffier side like Maxeo and Lizziet, but don't let that kleenex box get too far away! You might need it later.)

This story takes place in New York City. Liz is 23. She’s quiet, a little shy, the girl next door type, and a bit of a mystery. Max is 27 and a lawyer, and be warned, he's not mama's virginal little boy. He's a ladies man, what you might call a player, that is until he meets someone during a chance encounter in the park . . .

A Walk in the Park
Part 1

Liz Parker exited a New York City apartment building on a pleasant fall night heading straight toward the park across the street, feeling the tug on her hand as Max led the way. He was eager to make his usual rounds and it made her happy to know he was happy. They ambled along the sidewalk, with Max stopping at all his usual spots, and Liz humoring him. He was such a big lug!

The locals acknowledged him as he passed by, with a wave or a smile. Everyone thought he was a real sweetheart. They reached the street corner and he stood patiently beside Liz, looking at her with those puppy dog eyes of his, until the light changed and he took off running. Liz had to run just to keep up with him.

“Max!” she laughed. “Wait!” His enthusiasm was unbounded and she loved him with all her heart.

He pulled her into the park and came to a stop at a nearby tree, the same tree he stopped at every night. After sniffing and sniffing and walking round and round the base of it, he finally lifted his leg and relieved himself. Happy that he had made his mark, he abandoned the tree and set off down the trail once again, his tail wagging in sheer bliss.

Max Evans stretched out his legs, going through his warm-up exercises before starting out on his nightly run. Jogging through the park late in the evening was his therapy, a way to combat the stresses of his job and his life. Not that his life was usually stressful. Hell no! He was a well-respected defense attorney, following in the footsteps of his father, doing a job that he loved. He had money, position, authority, and his choice of any woman that he wanted, anytime he wanted. Who would complain about that? He had no entanglements to weigh him down, no commitments to hamper his pleasure. Life was good. Wasn’t it?

He kept to the lighted pathways when he ran, but he wasn’t too concerned about his personal safety. He could take care of himself. He was well toned, muscular and knew self-defense. The night didn’t bother him. He used to run in the morning, in the pre-dawn hours when the city was still mostly sleeping, but that was before he saw her.

* * * * *

Liz moved deeper into the park, knowing that it was discouraged for a woman to be out, alone, unaccompanied, at this time of night. But the night had always been her friend. She enjoyed the darkness, when there were less people out to bother you, or ask questions of you, or intrude on your solitude.

Besides, this was the park where she had seen him.

She never saw him jogging during the day. He was probably busy then. She was sure a man like him had a full life to live. Work. Women. A man that gorgeous probably had lots of women. Lord knows, he’d never be interested in a mousy girl like her. Oh no, that wasn’t even remotely possible.

* * * * *

Max continued stretching his muscles, thinking back to the first time he’d seen her, on a night like this, a few months ago, when he’d made a late night visit to his favorite deli just before closing time. He’d been just about ready to leave, with a pastrami on rye, and she’d walked by on the sidewalk pulled by the biggest damn dog he’d ever seen. Her hair, long and dark and shiny, framed her beautiful face, and he stopped dead in the doorway of the deli just to stare at her. An acquaintance from work had chosen that moment to ‘bump’ into him, and by the time he could extricate himself from her prattle, the dark haired angel had disappeared.

It’d been weeks before he’d seen her again, this time from the inside of a cab on his way home late one night. She’d been headed for the park again, leading the mammoth German Shepard, a monster of a dog who at least equaled her weight, and he’d fleetingly wondered how in the world she could control a dog that size. She smiled as the dog pulled her along, the world’s most beautiful smile, and Max had uncharacteristically stuck his head out the window to shout at her, but the cab turned a corner and he lost sight of her. He’d quickly told the driver to go around the block, but she was gone by the time they got back. He’d lost her again.

Over the next few weeks he thought he’d seen her once or twice, and he’d followed but it always turned out to be someone else. Then, just a week ago, he’d seen her again. He’d been jogging along and suddenly she was there, walking, or rather being walked by, the mammoth dog. He thought he’d heard her call his name once or twice and it’d made his pulse race, but it couldn’t be. She never even looked his way. How could she know his name? She disappeared into the park that night, and he’d been looking for her every night since. Somehow, she’d gotten under his skin in a way no one had ever done before.

Usually when he saw a woman that he wanted, he’d introduce himself and in no time at all he’d bed her and then move on. Some people called him a player, but he didn’t mind. The girls didn’t seem to either. He was never left wanting for female companionship, and the sex was great. No strings. No commitments. No love connections or declarations to tie him down.

But this time, there was something about this dark haired angel that made him act stupid. Rolling down the window of a cab and shouting out to someone he didn’t know – that wasn’t his style. She made him act crazy, totally out of character, yet he didn’t even know her name.

He should have gone up to her by now, introduced himself and laid the groundwork for his seduction, but he hadn’t yet. Maybe because every time he saw her, his stomach started churning with anxiety and his hands would get sweaty and – what the hell was wrong with him? He was good at this. Meeting women, making them happy, making himself happy, moving on. What was it about this girl that was so different? Why couldn’t he get her out of his head?

Suitably warmed up, Max began his nightly run, taking him over the familiar paths of Central Park. His dark hair lifted off his forehead as he ran. The cool night air felt good on his heated skin as he set a steady pace, pumping up his muscles and letting the stresses of the day fall behind him.

He couldn’t help but wonder if he would see her tonight. She was, after all, the reason that he chose to run in this park, at this time of night.

* * * * *

“Good boy!” Liz exclaimed when Max finished leaving his mark on the grass. She opened her doggie bag, as was her duty, and removed the steaming residue from the grass. She enclosed it in the plastic bag she had brought along and disposed of the offending material in the nearby trash. Max seemed quite pleased with himself, and she decided to give him a few more minutes to romp in the park before returning to the apartment for some much needed beauty sleep. Yeah, right. Like it was gonna help.

She hadn’t seen him yet, the man with the dark hair that made her pulse race. He usually came out at night, jogging along the lighted paths of the park. He moved with such sensual grace, his muscles flexing and straining as he jogged. She felt her cheeks heating up just thinking about him.

She’d first noticed him months ago, ordering a sandwich in a local deli. He was drop dead gorgeous with his dark hair framing his handsome face and his eyes, those beautiful eyes, a color somewhere between hazel and honey. He’d had a buxom blonde on his arm, chatting away with her in the doorway of the deli, and she scolded herself for even thinking about him. Someone like him would never even notice someone like her.

But it was always nice to dream.

* * * * *

Max scanned the pathways as he ran, moving past couples walking hand in hand, drunks resting on park benches, solitary figures moving quickly to some unknown destination. He paid none of them any heed, only looking for the girl with the dark hair and a giant of a dog. He crossed over the footbridge, feeling the burn in his muscles, knowing his run was almost over. Just another corner and he would complete his circuit and go into his cool down. He was disappointed that he hadn’t seen her tonight, but maybe tomorrow. There was always tomorrow.

* * * * *

Max sat patiently by his mistress while she bent over to tie her shoe, happily darting his tongue out to lick her cheek. His tail stuck out into the middle of the path, just lying there minding its own business, when suddenly a Nike clad foot came down hard on it. He yelped in pain and whirled around, which startled Liz unexpectedly. His leash wrapped around her legs and sent her sprawling. The dog’s normally pleasant demeanor was suddenly replaced by his inherent nature to protect his owner. He lunged, snapping and growling after what he perceived to be her attacker. Liz held on tight to the leash as she scrambled back to her feet, trying to pull Max away from the poor hapless jogger that had just run past them.

“MAX, NO! MAX! STOP!”

She pulled hard on the leash but Max was a big dog and she couldn’t control him. He weighed nearly as much as she did and it was naive of her to think she could stop him if he really wanted to attack this guy. His ferocious growl echoed through the park and he lunged at the poor man, nearly yanking her arm out of her shoulder socket.

“MAX! STOP!”

In horror, Liz watched as Max opened his mouth and sank his teeth into the back of the jogger’s thigh. She could hear the sound of cloth ripping and an agonized yelp, and then the man went down, sprawling on the pathway. He desperately tried to crawl away, to escape the barrage of biting teeth and tearing flesh while Liz pounced on the dog, trying frantically to pull him away from his victim.

“Jesus Christ!” Max cried out as the pain of teeth sinking into the back of his thighs reached his brain. The weight of the dog barreling into him from behind had sent him skidding across the cement pathway, scraping the skin off the palms of his hands and his elbows when he tried to break his fall. He kicked out at the dog in self-defense, trying to keep those snapping teeth away from him.

“Oh Jesus! Oh God!” The words escaped unbidden from her lips as Liz pulled the dog away from the stricken man. Shit! Shit, shit, shit! She’d told her brother that Max was too damn big for her to handle! Why hadn’t he listened to her? Now he’d mauled some poor innocent schmuck and she’d probably get her ass sued.

“Oh my God! Are you all right?”

The jogger lifted his head then, and that’s when she saw his face. The shock of it forced her to take a step back. Oh God, no! Why did it have to be him? Of all the people in New York City that Max could have attacked, why did it have to be him? He was the only man that had ever caused her heart to skip a beat just by looking at him, and this pussycat of a dog turned psycho killer from hell had decided to eat him for dinner.

Why, God, why?

“Holy Shit!” Max bellowed as he huddled in agony on the ground. “Can’t you control your fucking dog?” His tirade was cut short as his eyes focused on the girl struggling with the monster on a leash. The shock of it made him snap his mouth closed.

It was her. Holy Shit! It was her!

“God! I’m so sorry!” Liz exclaimed. “He’s never done anything like this before! Are you hurt? Did he bite you?”

“Hell yes, he bit me!” Max exclaimed. His hand reached for the back of one thigh and then the other, feeling the torn fabric of his sweatpants. The pain in both legs was intense, and he knew he had puncture holes from that dog’s formidable teeth.

“Jesus, I’m so sorry! I don’t know why he acted that way!” Liz tried to explain. “I think,” she was shaking inside and out from anxiety and adrenaline. “I think he was trying to protect me. He must have seen you as a threat to me or something . . .”

She didn’t know what else to say. She had no idea why Max had decided to attack this guy.

“God!” Max writhed in agony on the ground, clutching the backs of his thighs. He liked to think of himself as a pretty macho guy, but that dog had definitely left his mark.

“Maybe I should take you to the hospital?” Liz suggested. Her brother’s dog had attacked this poor innocent --- gorgeous man --- and she felt totally responsible. Max had finally settled down and stopped barking and now the stupid mutt was sitting on his haunches wagging his tail. Like he thought he’d done good!

“No, I don’t think it’s that bad,” Max said through gritted teeth. He was in agony from the dog bites, but if she called an ambulance, then he wouldn’t get to talk to her anymore and he’d rather be in agony with her, than at peace in an ambulance on the way to the hospital without her.

“My apartment is right over there,” Liz pointed across the street. “Let me take you up there and I can see what Max did to you. If it looks bad, I’ll take you to the hospital myself.”

Liz held her hand out to help him to his feet and at first she thought he was going to rebuff her. He eyed her hand suspiciously, and then looked at the dog, before tentatively lifting his hand to hers. When their fingers made contact for the first time, the jolt of electricity that surged through them surprised them both. As he rose to his feet he pulled his hand back as if the contact was too intense. His weight settled on his feet as he stood, flinching as the pain in his legs intensified.

“You’re hurt,” Liz noticed him wince, and cringed inside with sympathy pains. “Come with me.”

She led him toward a posh apartment building across the street from the park, with Max limping along beside her. He noticed how the doorman seemed to know her, tipping his hat at her respectfully, then eyeing Max up and down as if judging whether he was good enough to be in her presence. Even through his pain hindered mind, Max found that interesting.

The elevator opened as soon as they reached it and they stepped inside, with Max looking at the dog warily. The big guy seemed a model dog now, calm and relaxed, taking up a position between him and the girl. The monster’s tongue was hanging out of his mouth, panting the way dogs do, and Max could have sworn the thing was smiling! To emphasize that, the dog turned his big brown eyes up to look at him, then shot his tongue out to lick his hand. Max pulled his hand back quickly.

“I don’t know what came over him,” Liz apologized again, holding onto the dog’s leash tightly. “He’s never done anything like this before. Max is a good dog.”

Max thumped his tail on the floor when he heard his name and looked up with happy eyes at the two people that flanked him. He let out a small bark, agreeing with his mistress. He was a good dog!

Max stiffened and took a step back when the dog barked, causing the dog to dart his head in his direction, lifting his ears up curiously. He moved closer to the man and Max moved closer to the wall of the elevator, trying to get away from him.

“Max! Stop!” Liz commanded.

“Are you talking to me, or him?” Max stared down at the dog. The beast was smelling his hand now. What the hell was he doing trapped in this cramped little elevator with a psycho dog from hell and a tiny little beauty who couldn’t control him?

“I was talking to him,” Liz scratched the dog affectionately on his back, watching how he nuzzled the man’s hand. The poor guy cringed away from him, obviously afraid Max was going to bite him again. Max’s tongue darted out trying to lick the guy’s fingers.

“Max. Sit!”

The dog happily did as she commanded and sat his rump on the elevator floor, with his tail swishing back and forth. For a moment Liz thought Mr. Gorgeous was going to sit too. The doors to the elevator slid open and Liz checked the lighted panel on the wall, indicating they’d reached the 14th floor.

“Here we are,” Liz announced and led Max and Max out of the elevator. The dog stayed on her left and Max limped along right behind her as they made their way down the hallway. His leg muscles were tightening up and he knew it was going to hurt even worse tomorrow. His eyes focused on the girl and even through his pain he couldn’t help noticing the way her body moved as she walked. She was so small, but so . . . so . . . so beautiful. And gorgeous and captivating and arousing and . . . sexy. The dog gave a little bark and looked back at him as if he was agreeing.

When they reached apartment 1427 Liz retrieved her keys from her pocket and ushered them inside. As she flipped the lights on Max noticed the masculine appearance of the apartment right away. Chrome and glass tables flanking a black leather couch and chairs. He saw a few feminine touches here and there, white roses in a vase on the coffee table and a Barbara Cartland romance novel on the end table by the couch, but the overall appearance was that a man lived in this apartment.

Max felt a surge of something unfamiliar and when he realized what it was he was shocked. He was jealous. Him! Mr. Avoid a Relationship At All Costs, Mr. One Night Stand, Mr. Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em! Max Evans was jealous that this girl was living with some other man, and he didn’t even know her name! What was wrong with him?

Liz took Max off his leash and he sauntered off, ignoring the humans as he sought out his water dish in the kitchen. She set the leash on a table by the door, then turned to Max and said, “Come into the bathroom and let’s take a look at what Max did to you.”

She noticed he was looking at her with an amused smirk on his face and she hoped that meant he wasn’t going to sue her. God, his eyes were gorgeous. Were they light brown or were they hazel? With flecks of gold making them almost glow. And that dark hair framing that chiseled face, that strong jaw, those luscious lips. God! Just looking at him made her knees weak.

“I take it your dog’s name is Max,” Max said with a smile, even though his legs were killing him.

God! What a smile! A girl could get lost in that smile. If she thought her knees were weak a minute ago, now she was nothing but a puddle of goo ready to melt into the floor. He kept staring at her and it finally sunk in that she was supposed to respond.

“Yes, his name is Max. Maximus the Great.”

“Mine too,” Max smiled even deeper, showing the dimple in his cheek. Her eyebrows arched in surprise and he laughed, “Well, not the Maximus the Great part. Just Max.”

“Oh!” Liz laughed and covered her mouth with her hand.

God, she had the sexiest laugh he had ever heard. It was almost chemical the way he was reacting to her. He’d never felt this way before in his life. It was unsettling to say the least. It wasn’t like him to go weak kneed over a girl.

“Well Max, come on,” Liz said and tried to keep the nervous flutter out of her voice. “Let’s get you fixed up.”

She put her hand on his arm and Max felt that electricity surge through him again. Just her touch was making him react in a way that was totally foreign, and totally intoxicating. She led him down a hallway and through a large bedroom into an oversized master bathroom. He felt that surge of jealousy again as he limped by the king sized bed, picturing her luscious body buried in the sheets with some other guy all over her; doing the things he wanted to do –

Christ! Where were these thoughts coming from? He didn’t even know this girl! Then again, when had he ever worried about getting to know a girl first? What was it about her that made him so crazy?

She led him over to the bathroom counter and turned the faucet on, letting the sink fill with warm water. He gingerly rested his hands on the countertop, and she noticed the scrapes on his skin and the torn material at the elbows of his long sleeve t-shirt.

“Oh God, look at you,” she lifted his hands and looked at the damage on his palms.

Max was well aware of the extent of his injuries, but he didn’t hurt nearly as much now that she was holding his hands. In fact, looking down into her deep brown eyes was making him forget he had any injuries at all.

“Your elbows are scraped too,” she lamented. “Why don’t you take your shirt off and I’ll try to get you cleaned up?”

Liz went to the closet on the far wall to get a washcloth and a towel while Max pulled his shirt over his head, ruffling his hair slightly in the process. Damn, he liked that shirt, but since it got him into her apartment, into her bathroom, it was worth the loss. His eyes lifted to look in the mirror, watching her reflection as she crossed the room, unable to keep his eyes off her.

Turning back from the closet, Liz stopped short at the breathtaking sight of his broad naked back, and his muscular bare chest reflected in the oversized mirror above the sink. Holy Sweet Mother of God! What a body! It was obvious that he worked out. A lot. His chest muscles looked rock hard. His nipples, in a rich shade of chestnut brown, were perfectly placed. The ridges of his stomach looked more defined than any body builder she’d ever seen. His sweatpants hung loosely on his hips, making her mouth water at the sight of the dark line of hair that started underneath his navel and disappeared below his waistband.

Her eyes slowly rose up to see him staring back at her in the mirror and instantly a blush began to color her cheeks. Had her expression given her thoughts away? She cleared her throat and said, “I’m really sorry about all this. I have no idea why Max acted that way. He’s really a gentle dog, and he’s never bitten anyone before. I hope . . . I hope . . .”

“What?” Max looked over his shoulder at her as she neared. “You hope what?”

“I hope you don’t make them put him down, for being a vicious dog. He’s really a good dog.”

Max could see the concern on her face and he shook his head, about to respond that attacking someone out of the blue wasn’t the sign of a good dog. He held back the comment when she said, “It would just kill my brother to lose Max.”

“Your brother?” he asked with keen interest.

Max felt his pulse quicken when she came up beside him and lifted his hand to cradle it in hers. She dipped it in the warm water and he sucked in his breath at the sharp sting it caused.

“I’m sorry,” she apologized quickly, looking up at him with guilt all over her face.

“It’s okay,” Max tried not to wince. Her eyes dropped back to his hand, and he watched her gently clean the dirt and the blood and the bits of gravel away from his scraped flesh. She had the softest hands, the gentlest hands he had ever felt. Tiny little hands. Tiny little fingers. Delicate little bones. God he wanted to kiss her.

She finished cleaning his left hand and then reached for his right, dipping that one in the water now. He kept his reaction internal as the pain flared once again, trying not to let her know how much it really hurt. She felt bad enough as it was, without him adding to it.

“You said your brother?” Max reminded her.

“Yes,” she took his hand out of the water and patted it dry with the towel. “My brother. Max is his dog.”

She raised his arm so she could see the damage to his elbow, trying not to stare at the way his muscles flexed as his arm moved. She distracted herself by filling the sink with fresh water, and then went about the task of cleaning his elbows and tending to his wounds. She opened a drawer filled with first aid supplies, and removed a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a bag of cotton balls. Saturating one with the liquid, she dabbed it against the injuries on his hands. He sucked in his breath as it foamed up and began to sting.

“Sorry,” she said again, looking at him with those big chocolate eyes.

“It’s okay. Really.” He could get lost in those big dark eyes. She saturated another cotton ball and moved to his elbows, dabbing the stinging liquid there as well, and then covered the deeper scrapes with Band-Aids.

“Thanks,” Max said when she finished. He could smell her scent all around him, her sweet perfume permeating the air, making him lean in a little closer.

“It’s the least I can do,” Liz replied. “Just lean against the counter now.”

Max faced the mirror and Liz knelt behind him, taking a closer look at the tear in his pants. She hoped Max only got a good bite of the cloth and not the skin underneath, but the way he was limping that probably wasn’t the case.

“Is this your brother’s apartment?” Max asked, feeling oddly happy when her head nodded in assent.

“Yes, he –”

Max hissed as her hand touched the back of his thigh. The pain shot through him like a knife, but it wasn’t half as shocking as the burst of attraction her hand touching him caused.

“I’m sorry!” she cringed again. She felt terrible about what Max had done, and her inability to stop the big dog from biting him. Looking up at Max, she said, “I guess you’d better slip your pants down so I can take a look at the damage.”

Max stared at her with his mouth hanging open in surprise. Had he just heard her right? Had his dark haired angel, the girl who had filled his thoughts, his dreams, for weeks, just asked him to take off his pants?

What was he supposed to do now?

A Walk in the Park
Part 2

Max stood speechless in the middle of Liz’s bathroom hearing her innocent remark echo off the walls.

‘Take off your pants. Take off your pants. Take off your pants.’

His dark haired angel wanted him to take off his pants? Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem, but nothing about this situation was normal.

“Um . . .” Max squirmed, showing his embarrassment. He looked down at the innocent beauty kneeling beside him and said, “I don’t think that’s gonna work.”

He could feel the heat starting to rise in his cheeks, something that felt totally foreign to him. It wasn’t like him to get embarrassed like this. She raised her eyebrows and looked at him questioningly, forcing him to admit, “I’m not exactly, um . . . that is to say . . . well . . . I’m not wearing any . . . underwear.”

“You’re not . . .” she started to say and then butterflies took off in her stomach. She tried to keep her eyes on his face. She tried really hard, but the urge was too great to resist. Her eyes lowered for a quick peek at his crotch, and then her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, knowing that he knew she looked. She bit her lip and looked up at him again, asking, “You jog without underwear?”

“Not usually,” he smiled at her like a little boy who just got caught looking at a Victoria Secret catalog. When he started his run tonight, he hadn’t expected to get attacked by a man-eating dog and then need to drop his drawers in front of the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. Go figure.

“Oh,” Liz tried to think of something else, but all she could picture was him standing there naked. It was a very pleasant image. “Well,” she hesitated. “Um, your uh, your pants are already torn. I could just make the hole bigger so I can see better.”

“Okay,” Max agreed. It would be better than dropping his drawers in front of her. He could already feel himself stirring to life and the last thing he wanted was to have her tend to his wounds while he showed her his bare ass and he tried to hide a raging boner.

“So,” Liz let out a deep breath and shifted into position behind him again. She moved her hands to the tear at the back of his thigh and pulled at the fabric, trying to enlarge the hole. The heat radiating off his body made her pulse rate climb and her fingers fumble. She struggled with the fabric but it didn’t want to tear.

“Here, let me help,” Max said, reaching his hands around behind his leg. His fingers touched hers and he felt that jolt of electricity again, just from the touch of her skin. She moved her hands aside and Max felt for the tear. He pulled hard, too hard, and with a loud ripping sound the small hole was suddenly the size of the Grand Canyon.

“Whoops,” Liz said involuntarily.

He’d pulled so hard the material had torn all the way up to his waistband and down past his knee.

She could see his leg now. His impressively muscular leg. Not too hairy, but oh so masculine. Her eyes rose above his thigh and her tongue darted out to wet her lips as she looked at his muscular butt. Oh God, he had the sexiest looking butt.

“Well that didn’t work too well,” Max said chagrined, feeling the breeze on his backside.

“Hold still,” Liz squeaked out, tearing her eyes away from his oh so swoon worthy ass. She reached into a drawer on the left of the sink and removed a pair of scissors. Max felt the cold steel against his skin as she cut the material away so she could see his injury better. The fabric fell away, exposing the back of his left leg from the top of his thigh to the top of his knee. His butt was barely covered but Max decided this was better than the other option. At least the front of him was covered, and thank God he had plenty of room because as soon as her fingers touched his naked flesh, he had a strong reaction. A very strong reaction.

Liz looked at the bite marks on the back of his thigh and winced at the trickle of blood that dripped from one of the puncture wounds. Max had really bit Max hard. What had come over that dog? She dipped the washcloth into the warm water in the sink and went about the task of cleaning his wounds. Her embarrassment at the situation disappeared as her medical detachment took over.

Max felt her fingers gently touching the back of his thigh and a shudder coursed through his body. Her right hand slid up his inner thigh and he barely noticed her left hand cleaning his wounds anymore. It seemed vaguely wrong that he was getting so sexually aroused while he was in so much pain, but her touch was exhilarating. He leaned forward slightly, hoping she wouldn’t notice that oh so noticeable bulge at the front of his pants.

“Oh that’s a big one,” Liz said.

What? She noticed?

“There’s one or two pretty big bite marks here,” Liz said as she touched his upper thigh, “but the ones down here are just superficial.”

“Oh, good,” Max said in relief. She hadn’t noticed after all. Down, boy, down.

Liz picked up the bottle of hydrogen peroxide again to disinfect the wounds. Soaking a cotton ball, she dabbed the bite marks and watched the foam bubble up. He sucked in a breath and she said, “Sorry. This is gonna hurt a bit.”

‘No shit,’ Max thought through gritted teeth. But at least the stinging had taken care of his other little problem. The front of his pants reverted back to normal as the pain overrode the pleasure, because, after all, he wasn’t into S&M. No whips or chains in his closet. Jesus, why was he thinking about whips and chains and a certain dark haired beauty wearing black leather? Now he couldn’t turn around again!

Maybe it would have been better to go to the hospital after all, Max thought. He might have gotten a fat old nurse who could have touched him everywhere and not gotten a reaction out of him. Instead, he was standing here with his ass hanging out and this goddess with her hand just inches from his balls and the biggest damn boner he’d ever had.

Down, boy! Down!

“It really doesn’t look too bad,” Liz said again and looked up at his face. She could see the strain there, in the set of his jaw and the way his brows were knitted together. “I should probably wrap it though. To keep the puncture holes clean.”

“Okay,” Max said hoarsely. How was she going to do that?

“Um, you’re going to have to move your legs apart,” Liz said, trying to keep her voice neutral.

This is going to be interesting, Max thought as he spread his legs wide.

This is going to be interesting, Liz thought as she watched his legs move apart. She took the roll of Kerlix out of the drawer where all the first aid supplies were kept, and as she prepared to wrap it around his thigh she hoped she wouldn’t touch anything inadvertently. She anchored the cottony wrap at the top of his thigh, covering the upper wounds, and then unrolled it, her hand going between his legs, unfurling the wrap as she went. Her left hand reached around to the front of his leg and met her right hand, transferring the wrap so she could complete the first circumference of his leg. So far so good. She didn’t touch anything that might have been dangling in the way.

Why was it so hot in here?

Max tried to picture that fat old nurse in his mind, but it wasn’t helping. His prick was throbbing and his balls were tighter than a drum. Each time her hand went between his legs he pictured her reaching up and making him a very happy man. Good Lord! Where were these thoughts coming from?

“Done,” she said with an inward sigh and secured the end with a strip of first aid tape. “I should take a look at your right leg now.”

She looked up at him and he looked down at her and all he could do was nod his head. She inched over toward his right side noticing right away that the puncture holes were higher on this leg. She picked up the scissors and cut his sweatpants just below the level of his butt. She then cut the material down the sides of his leg and the cloth fell away. She sighed with relief when she saw Max hadn’t connected as well with this leg. There were only a few marks and none as deep as on his left leg.

She rinsed out the washcloth and cleaned the wounds and then said, “Here comes the stinging part again.”

Max gritted his teeth, but it didn’t hurt nearly as much this time.

“This leg looks a lot better,” Liz said. “I don’t think it even needs to be wrapped. Most of the marks are really just scratches. Wait . . .”

Wait? Max wondered what that meant. Her fingers lifted from his thigh, moving upwards, and what little material that was covering his ass lifted away. What was she doing? Why was she exposing his ass like that? Why was she touching his ass like that? Oh god, she was touching his ass!

Was he in heaven or was he in hell?

“Ut oh, it looks like he got you a good one, right here,” Max heard her say and then her hand was cupping his ass. Her finger poked at the middle of his cheek and he let out a yelp. It wasn’t just because it hurt.

“Sorry,” Liz said sincerely. Out came the stingy stuff and he yelped again. “Sorry,” she repeated.

“Michael, are you in there?” came a voice from the direction of the bedroom. Max and Liz turned to see a blonde pixie standing in the bathroom doorway with her mouth hanging down to the floor. Maria was unprepared for the sight of her boyfriend’s normally staid sister kneeling on the bathroom floor facing a half naked man. A gorgeous half naked man, but a half naked man none the less. You go girl!

“Maria!” Liz exclaimed.

Max’s first instinct was to turn around to hide his exposed backside, but that wouldn’t work since he didn’t want anyone to see his front side either. Damn. Double damn!

“Well, I’ll just go out here,” Maria pointed toward the bedroom and beyond, and added, “until you guys are done. Sorry about the, um, interruption.”

“Maria!” Liz cried again with her cheeks burning. “It’s not what you-” and then she realized she was still cupping Max’s butt. Her hand flew off his backside like his skin was on fire and her cheeks flamed even redder. She scrambled to her feet and ran toward the door crying out, “Maria, it’s not what you think!”

Her cheeks had turned crimson, and that struck Max as somehow endearing. He’d been with his share of women, but no one had ever affected him quite like this dark haired beauty. Her sensuality was tempered by her innocence and Max found her very irresistible. Who would have thought he’d go for the girl next door type?

“Uh, do you think we could finish here?” Max asked. “Before anyone else decides to come by and take a peek at my ass?”

Liz looked at the door, and then at Max, and then back toward the door before finally turning back in his direction. She was avoiding looking him in the eyes and he could tell how embarrassed she was. Being caught in a compromising position wasn’t something she was used to.

“I’m sorry,” Max said, feeling protective of her.

“You’re sorry?” Liz said in surprise as she knelt down again. “None of this is your fault. You didn’t beg Max to bite you.”

“Still . . .” Max said and his voice trailed off as she tended to the bite on his butt. Her hands felt soft and warm, but knowing Maria somebody or other was out in the other room helped him keep control of his nether region. At least he wasn’t standing at attention anymore.

In order to keep his mind off the fact that her hand was cupping his butt again, he let his thoughts drift to the cute blonde out in the other room, wondering why she looked so familiar. Maria . . . Maria . . . why did Maria look so familiar . . .

“Almost done,” Liz told him.

“Good,” Max said, not sure if he meant it. Once she was done she wouldn’t be touching his – on to other thoughts now . . .

“So is Michael your brother?” Max asked. That was the name he’d heard Maria say.

“Yes,” Liz answered.

“And Maria’s his girlfriend?”

“Yes,” Liz said again.

“She looks . . . Oh! That’s Maria DeLuca, isn’t it!” Max exclaimed.

“Yes,” Liz nodded and looked up at him. Was he attracted to Maria? All the guys were attracted to Maria. She was famous and beautiful and outgoing and effervescent and – Maria was everything Liz wasn’t.

“I have several of her CD’s,” Max said with a smile. “Her latest one is really good.”

“Yes, it is,” Liz agreed, feeling deflated.

“Hmmm,” Max pondered, his mind jumping from one thought to another. His eyebrows arched as the clues slid into place. “Michael. Your brother’s name is Michael!”

“Yes,” Liz met his gaze. She couldn’t read his expression.

“Michael Guerin,” he added.

“Yes,” Liz nodded. “Do you know him?”

“We’ve met once or twice,” Max nodded. Once or twice indeed!

“All done,” Liz finished placing a Band-Aid on his backside. She rose to her feet, setting about the task of putting away the first aid supplies. “That one’s probably gonna hurt the most. Especially when you sit down.”

“I’ll try to remember that,” Max said, deciding it was safe to turn around now.

Liz looked up to see that smile on his face again, the one that showed the dimple in his cheek. It made her knees weak again, even though she knew he wasn’t interested in her. No one was ever interested in her.

“Thank you,” Max said softly, wanting to reach out and touch her face. Actually, he wanted to kiss her. No, actually, he wanted to do a lot more than just kiss her. Down boy. Down!

“I’m just sorry Max attacked you like that,” Liz apologized again.

‘I’m not’, Max thought to himself.

“I can give you a pair of my brother’s pants, if you want,” Liz offered. “You know, so you can get home without getting a draft and catching a cold.”

“That would probably be a good idea,” Max laughed lightly.

“I’ll go get . . . something,” Liz backed toward the door. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay,” Max watched her leave. God, she was absolutely beautiful. And so sweet and nice and innocent and . . . and . . . just the kind of woman he wasn’t used to being around. He didn’t let anyone get under his skin, but there was just something about her . . .

“Here you go,” Liz stepped back into the bathroom a minute later and Max could swear the room came alive as soon as she stepped over the threshold. “Michael’s a little taller than you, but I think these will fit.”

“Thanks,” Max smiled and reached for the black warm-up pants and t-shirt she was offering. Liz excused herself and left the bathroom, pulling the door closed to give him privacy.

He pulled off his ruined sweats and took a moment to look at his reflection in the mirror. Looking over his shoulder he could see the gauze wrap on one thigh and the bite marks on the other, and the Band-Aid on his butt. That was gonna hurt when it was time to take it off. An impish smile crossed his face as he thought; maybe he could get her to take it off for him. The thought of her touching his naked flesh again made him smile even wider. Her hands were . . . her hands were . . . nice. Better than nice. He felt his cock stirring to life again and he gave it a little tug. Down boy! Down!

He slid one leg into the black pants and then the other, pulling them carefully up his thighs, all the way up and over his hips. He wondered what Michael Guerin’s reaction would be if he knew that he, Max Evans, was wearing his pants, without underwear no less! The irony was classic. He reached down the front to adjust his impressive equipment, before tying the string at his waist.

He slid the Yankees t-shirt over his head and then took a look at himself in the mirror. He ran his fingers through his hair to smooth it out, checking one last time to see if he was presentable. Satisfied, he picked up his ruined sweats and shirt from the floor and headed out of the bathroom

Max entered the living room just in time to hear Liz giving Maria a replay of the dog attacking him in the park. The dog that was now lying on his back eating up the fact that two beautiful women were rubbing his belly. That Max was one damn lucky dog!

Maria looked up as he entered and said, “I’m so sorry Max did that to you. Are you all right?”

“I will be,” Max answered, staring at Maria and wondering what she could see in a guy like Michael Guerin. Under different circumstances, he might have tried to make a play for her, just because she was Michael’s girl, but those thoughts were far from his mind now. No, there was only one girl he wanted to make a play for, and it wasn’t Maria.

Liz saw the way he looked at Maria and those butterflies she’d had in her stomach earlier took a nosedive. Damn. It was always this way. But then she’d been stupid to think he could ever be interested in her anyway. Things like that never happened to her.

Polite as always, Liz said, “Um, Max, this is Maria, Maria, this is Max.”

“Nice to meet you,” Max said enthusiastically. “I’m a big fan of yours.”

“Why, thank you,” Maria smiled back. “It’s nice to see the face that goes with the rest of you.”

“Don’t remind me,” Max laughed. An awkward moment passed between the three of them before Max cleared his throat and said, “Well, I should be going.”

“Do you want me to throw those things away for you?” Liz asked, pointing at the clothes in his hands.

“No,” he shook his head. “Gotta keep ‘em as evidence,” Max teased.

Oh God! He is going to sue me, Liz cringed.

They stood looking at each other, neither saying a word as the seconds ticked by. Maria watched it all with a knowing look on her face. These two had it bad! She could see the signs.

“Well, I better go,” Max repeated, even though he didn’t want to.

“I’ll walk you to the elevator,” Liz offered, wishing he wanted to stay.

They left the apartment and walked the short distance to the elevator, neither saying a word. Max walked beside her, highly conscious of the way she moved and the way she smelled. Would she taste as sweet as she looked? He stole glances in her direction, wondering why he felt so tongue-tied around her. It wasn’t like him. Come-on lines had never been a problem for him in the past.

Liz pressed the down button and to his dismay the elevator doors opened much sooner than he expected. He thought he’d get at least another minute or two. He hesitated, not really wanting to leave, but when the doors started to slide closed he shot his hand out to stop them. He stepped into the elevator reluctantly and said, “Well, goodnight then.”

“Goodnight Max,” Liz echoed and then added, “I’m really sorry about everything.”

‘I’m not’, Max thought.

As the doors began to close his eyes opened wide with the sudden realization of how stupid he’d been.

“Wait!” he cried out. “I didn’t get your name!”

Surprised that he even bothered to ask, Liz answered just as the doors slid shut. “Liz. My name’s Liz.”

“Liz,” Max repeated, smiling to himself inside the small elevator. What a beautiful name.

A Walk in the Park
Part 3

Max entered the law offices of Evans, Evans, Patterson and Stone, gingerly making his way to his own spacious office. He got a few stares as he stiffly walked by the secretaries and the interns and various other staff members, but he tried to ignore them all. With his keen hearing he overheard an envious underling muttering to a co-worker.

“Evans must have given it a real workout last night, to come to work walking like that.”

Max knew the guy wasn’t talking about a workout at the gym. He had a reputation as a ladies man, and well deserved, though this time his stiff and sore muscles weren’t caused by a night of energetic sex. He briefly thought about telling the office the truth, and then decided fuck it. Let them think it was.

When he reached his office he closed his door behind him and made his way slowly over to his desk. He pulled out his chair to sit down and then thought better of it. The bite mark on his right butt cheek was really making its presence known this morning. Liz had warned him that it might hurt the most, and it looked like she was right.

Well, a girl as smart as Liz would know those kinds of things, now wouldn’t she? And how did he know she was so smart? Well, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. He could just tell. She was not only beautiful, she was a brain as well. How refreshing, when compared to all the bimbos that tended to throw themselves at him.

His mind filled with pleasant thoughts of his dark haired angel. Liz. Liz Guerin. Considering who her brother was, Max knew he should probably walk away and never look back, but he knew he couldn’t do that. Ever since the first time he’d seen her, that night she’d walked past the deli, he hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind. He’d been staking out the park for weeks, months, just so that he could get a glimpse of her again, and last night he had. God had he ever!

Everything about her seemed perfect to him. Her eyes, her smile, her laugh, her . . . God, everything from the top of her head to the tip on her toes seemed perfect. Just thinking about her made his pulse start to quicken and his stomach feel jittery and --- What the fuck was wrong with him? He never acted this way.

Instead of sitting at his desk, Max walked over to the window that looked out over Central Park. Was she down there now? Was she walking that mammoth dog? Was she strolling along the pathway where they’d met last night?

Was she thinking of him?

* * * * * *

Liz slowly became aware of the warm puffs of air against her face and it tied right into the dream she was having, a dream where his face was so close to hers she was breathing his air. His heated breath met hers as his lips inched closer and closer, his golden eyes drawing her in to him in a way she had never felt before. Their lips touched and sparks flew between them --- and then he licked her. A big, wet, sloppy lick across her lips.

Her eyes flew open to see a pair of deep brown eyes staring back at her. Big happy puppy dog eyes. Max chuffed at her, giving her his morning greeting with his tail pounding on the bedroom floor. His tongue flicked out again, hitting its mark, landing another doggie kiss right on her lips.

“Good morning to you too!” Liz said to Max, making his tail wag even harder. She swiped her hand across her mouth and then reached out from under the covers to scratch him behind the ears, sending Max into doggie heaven. Suitably pampered, he dipped his head to the floor and his teeth closed over the leash he’d dropped beside her bed a minute ago. He stood looking at her expectantly, wagging his tail furiously and smiling at her with the leash hanging from his mouth.

“You want to go for a walk?” Liz asked and Max chuffed at her again, his tail wagging even harder than before. He fairly danced around the room when she pulled her covers aside and slipped into a pair of jeans and an oversized sweatshirt of Michael’s. She sat on the edge of her bed and tied her shoes under Max’s watchful gaze. Finished, she stretched languidly and said, “Are you gonna be a good boy this morning, or are you planning on biting another cute guy for breakfast?”

Max dropped his leash and barked at her, a small little bark, sounding like he was pleased with himself. Liz picked the leash up and Max danced all around her feet as she walked toward the front door.

“C’mon big boy.”

* * * * *

“Max,” greeted Philip Evans as he stepped into his son’s office.

“Hey, Dad,” Max smiled, turning from the window and his thoughts of Liz.

“What time do you have to be in court this morning?”

“Nine o’clock,” Max answered and lifted his wrist to look at his watch. “I’ll be leaving in a few-”

“What the hell happened to your hands?” Philip stared at his son in concern.

Max turned his palms up giving Philip a better look at the angry looking scrapes. “I took a tumble when I was jogging in the park last night,” he said with a crooked smile. What a tumble! I think I fell in ---

“Max! Are you all right?” Philip asked, staring at his hands. “I told you it wasn’t a good idea for you to run at night, in Central Park no less. You’re tempting fate, son. One of these days-”

“I’m fine Dad,” Max interrupted.

Looking at the time once again, he picked up his briefcase and came around his desk, thinking about what his father had just said. Tempting fate. Maybe he wasn’t tempting fate at all. Maybe fate was tempting him.

* * * * *

“Morning, Jim,” Liz said cheerily to the doorman as she and Max exited the building.

“Morning, Miss Parker,” Jim replied, dipping his hat to her. “Morning to you too, Master Max.” The big dog met his gaze and snorted a greeting as he pranced by.

Liz crossed the street and the two of them took to the familiar paths of Central Park with Liz’s thoughts turning to that other Max, the gorgeous human one. What was he doing now, she wondered? What did he do for a living? For that matter, where did he live? And who did he live with?

Did he have a girlfriend? Did he have a wife? No. Not a wife. Well, at least he didn’t wear a wedding ring, so he probably didn’t have a wife. Just a girlfriend then. A man that gorgeous had to have a girlfriend. Maybe more than one. He probably had his pick of any girl he wanted. He probably got laid every night.

Whoa, where had that thought come from?

Images filled her mind; of his naked chest and his naked back and his naked thighs and his naked butt ---

Liz shook her head, trying to clear her mind. Steering her thoughts toward more neutral territory, she wondered how he was feeling this morning. Those bite marks were probably pretty sore. He’d need to be careful of infection. She’d cleaned his wounds thoroughly, but still. That one bite mark on his right butt cheek would probably give him the most trouble. It went pretty deep.

The image of his naked ass was once more floating in her mind and she couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face. Add to that the memory of what it felt like to touch that naked skin. She felt the temperature rising, and it wasn’t because the sun had just come out from behind a cloud.

* * * * *

Max shifted uncomfortably in the cab on his way to the Courthouse. His injuries didn’t bother him too much when he was standing, but when he sat down, that was another matter. He groaned when the cab went over a rut in the road jarring his tender backside.

As Central Park came into view his eyes scanned the pathways, wondering if she was there, walking that behemoth. Or maybe she was at work? What did she do? Did she have a job? Did she have a boyfriend?

Did she wake up every morning looking into another man’s eyes?

Maybe not, Max thought hopefully. She was in her brother’s apartment and it looked like she was living there – unless the feminine touches around the apartment belonged to Maria DeLuca. Maybe Liz was just visiting. From out of town. Maybe that’s why sometimes weeks would go by and he wouldn’t see her. What if she was gone already and he’d have to wait weeks before he’d get a chance to see her again?

He didn’t like that thought at all. Not one little bit. If she was gone already, he knew Michael Guerin would never tell him where she was.

The sun came out from behind a cloud with a beam of light falling on a dark haired beauty walking behind a devil beast. Max pressed his face against the window as the cab passed by, momentarily frozen by the sight of her. He broke out of his trance and frantically tried to roll the window down, but the handle fought against him and by the time he got it to move freely, they’d driven half way down the block.

He stuck his head out the window and looked back in the direction he’d seen her, but she wasn’t there now. He leaned out further, shouting to the driver, “Turn around! Go back the other way!”

The driver adjusted his rearview mirror, looking at the crazy man in the back seat. His head hung out the window like a dog, and his previously immaculate hair was now a windblown mess. If he stuck his tongue out and started panting, the picture would be complete.

“Eh?” the cab driver acknowledged him. “What’s that you say?”

Max pulled his head back in the window ready to curse at the driver to turn around and make it quick. He glanced at his watch to check the time and sighed in frustration. If he had the driver go back to find her, he’d be late for court. He had responsibilities, and as much as he wanted to shuck ‘em all right now, he couldn’t do that. Disappointed, he said, “Never mind.”

Turning, he looked wistfully out the back window trying to catch a glimpse of her. She’d had the most beautiful look on her face when he passed her a moment ago. The sun had lit her features, making her hair shine and her skin glow. He couldn’t help wondering what she was thinking of at that particular moment, and what had made her smile so.

* * * * *

Liz wrapped the towel around her body as she stepped from the shower and hurried into the bedroom to answer the phone. Could it be him? Was he calling her to tell her how he was feeling this morning? Was he calling her to tell her he was suing her? It didn’t matter, as long as he was calling her! But no, it couldn’t be him. She hadn’t given him her phone number. Drying her hands quickly, she eagerly picked up the handset.

“Hello?”

“Hey Liz,” came the male voice.

“Oh, hi,” Liz said, unable to hide her disappointment.

“Well, don’t sound so happy about it,” he huffed.

“Sorry Michael,” Liz laughed. “I was hoping it was some – never mind. How’s the trip going?”

“Fine, but something’s come up and I won’t be back until Sunday. I left a message for Maria, but can you tell her, just in case she doesn’t get it? She’ll probably be pissed, but I won’t be able to take her to that party we were supposed to go to tomorrow.”

“What party?” Liz asked.

“Oh just something work related. Nothing really,” Michael dismissed it, “but you know how Maria likes a good party. Hey, maybe you can go with her. It’ll probably be boring and stuffy, but with Maria there, you never know. You know how she is!”

“Michael . . . ” Liz said his name hesitantly. “A party? With nobody there I know?”

“You know Maria, and . . .” he hesitated and then continued, “. . . it might be good for you to get out. Have some fun for a change.”

“Michael . . .”

“Do it for me, Sis? If Maria doesn’t get to go to this party, I’ll never hear the end of it!”

“I’ll think about it, Michael.”

“Don’t think about it. Do it!” Michael ordered good-naturedly. “I’ll see ya on Sunday.”

“Bye Michael,” Liz smiled and heard the phone go dead in her hand. He was so protective of her, had been ever since . . . well, the reason didn’t matter now. The past was the past and she couldn’t do anything to change it.

She sighed as she put the phone down and thanked God she still had him. Michael was all she had left.

* * * * *

Max dropped his briefcase on his desk and eyed his plush leather chair. It looked soft and cushy and he wondered if he dared sit down. His legs were barking at him after a long day in court, the chairs there weren’t the softest, and he rubbed at the puncture wound on his right cheek. Sitting probably wouldn’t be a good idea.

“Hi, Max,” came a sultry voice from the doorway.

He froze with his hand on his ass, and then slowly turned to look at the blonde vixen that had darkened his doorstep.

“Hello Tess,” he said flatly.

“Do you need any help there?” she asked seductively.

“Any . . .?” he arched his eyebrows, and then realized what she meant. If he wanted his ass rubbed, she’d be more than willing to rub it for him. Or anything else he wanted her to rub, for that matter.

“What can I do for you Tess?” he folded his arms over his chest and leaned back against his desk. As soon as the back of his legs touched the hard oak surface, he jumped away with a flash of pain marring his handsome face.

“Are you all right?” she stepped into the office, invading his space.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” he replied quickly and walked behind his desk to keep some distance between them. She was always coming on to him and frankly she was giving him the creeps. He wasn’t interested in her in the least, but she just didn’t seem to take the hint. “What was it that you needed?”

“Just your signature,” she sauntered across the room. She leaned forward to place the document on his desk, making sure her ample cleavage was prominently displayed.

Max had to fight not to roll his eyes at her obviousness. He reached for the pen in her outstretched hand, which she held onto for a moment as he tried to pull it away. He had to tug it away from her. He signed the document after giving it a quick review, and then set the pen down on the paper and pushed it in her direction.

“There you go,” Max said. Now get the fuck out of my office, he wanted to add but held his tongue.

She picked up the paper and the pen and turned toward the door, strutting her stuff as she crossed the room. When she reached the threshold, she turned back to him with a not so subtle appraisal and asked, “Are you going to the Mayor’s party tomorrow night?”

“Yeah,” he answered, before thinking.

“Good. I’ll see you there,” she smiled seductively, or so she thought.

“Great,” Max replied as he watched her walk away. That’s just fucking great. Just what he wanted, an evening trying to hide from Tess the Trollop. Maybe he wouldn’t go at all.

* * * * *

“Damn him!” Maria exclaimed. Why did Michael like to ruin all her fun? “I’ve been looking forward to this party for weeks! I bought a new dress that was gonna knock his socks off.”

“I’m sorry Maria,” Liz tried to console her. “Michael really did feel bad that he had to cancel.” Liz opened the freezer, looking for something, anything, that would be quick to fix for dinner. Frozen dinners for one were her normal fare.

“I’ve got it!” Maria’s voice rose excitedly and she slammed the freezer closed. She pointed at Liz saying, “You. Get your coat on. We’re gonna go buy you a party dress!”

“Maria, no-” Liz said with her eyes growing wide.

“Liz, you are going to this party with me, and I’m not taking ‘no’ for an answer. You haven’t done anything fun since you got here.”

“No Maria, I’m not the party ty-”

“I’m gonna make you the party type, right now! I know a great little shop over in the Soho district. In fact, last time I was there they had this gorgeous dress that would be perfect for you! I hope they still have it!”

Liz slumped her shoulders knowing there was no way out of this now. She’d been around Maria long enough to know that once she got a bee in her bonnet about something, nothing could change her mind. Maria pulled her out into the living room, lifted her jacket off the coat rack, and pushed her out the door.

Max watched them as they left, wagging his tail back and forth. As soon as the door closed he rose to his feet and padded down the hallway. Time to go sleep on the bed!

* * * * *

Max placed another file in his briefcase and closed the lid, ready to head for home. He hesitated as he lifted the briefcase and looked at the phone, wondering if he should try calling her now, or wait. Almost unbidden, his fingers went to the rolodex on his desk and flipped to the letter G. He flipped past card after card, looking for Guerin. He frowned in disappointment when he found it and the only number listed was for his office. Damn.

He retrieved the phone book from his desk drawer and searched the G’s but just as he suspected, his name wasn’t there. It must be unlisted. Striding out of his office, he poked his head into his father’s office down the hall and asked, “Hey Dad, do you have Michael Guerin’s home phone number?”

“Michael Guerin?” Philip asked startled. “Yeah, I should have it around here somewhere.” Curious, Philip held his son’s gaze and asked, “Business or personal?”

Max smiled and answered, “Oh, definitely personal.”

“Now I really am curious,” Philip said, arching his eyebrows. “Are you two making nice?”

“Never,” Max laughed.

* * * * *

Max paused in the bedroom doorway and wondered which bed he should choose. If he slept on his lady’s bed, she’d know it as soon as she got home, and she might call him a bad dog. He wasn’t supposed to sleep on her bed. That’s probably why he wanted to, because it wasn’t allowed.

Turning his head, he looked down the hall at the other bedroom. If he slept on that bed, his master wouldn’t know about it until he came back from whatever place he went to when he wasn’t here. He usually didn’t seem to mind it when he slept on his bed, except the times he had that lady with him, the one that just left. Making up his mind that his master’s bed was the safest bet, Max headed happily down the hall.

He trotted into the room and was just about to launch his body onto the bed when the telephone rang. Startled, he looked around to see if he was going to be scolded for doing something bad. Seeing no one, he jumped up while the telephone continued ringing.

* * * * *

In his office, Max counted out the rings, getting that sinking feeling that she wasn’t home. When the recorded message came on, in Michael’s familiar voice, Max debated whether or not to leave a message. What if Michael got it instead of Liz? Deciding it would probably be better just to try her later, he hung up without leaving a message.

* * * * *

Max flipped onto his back and rolled around on the bed, scratching his back and luxuriating in the feel of the soft blankets. He made happy little grunting noises deep in his throat until the phone stopped ringing and he pricked up his ears at the sound of his master’s voice. Was he home?

“. . . at the tone, please leave your name and number . . .”

Max watched the doorway expectantly, turning his head from side to side as the apartment fell silent again.

Looking around and hearing nothing to indicate he was in trouble for anything, he stood up, walked around and around and around and then lay back down on the cushy bed, curling his tail around him.

* * * * *

Max tossed his keys and his briefcase onto the table and headed toward his bedroom, loosening his tie as he went. He’d begged a Tylenol with codeine from his secretary, she always had a fully stocked pharmacy in her purse, and it was beginning to catch up with him. The pain in his legs was starting to ease off, but he was also getting sleepy. Maybe he’d rest his weary muscles for a while and then he’d try to call Liz later.

He dropped his jacket over the back of a chair in the living room, and tossed his tie in the same general direction. It missed the chair and coiled on the carpet like a snake. He unbuttoned his shirt as he moved into his bedroom, then loosened his belt and lowered his zipper. His pants sagged, then slipped down his muscular legs to pool around his feet. He left them lying in a heap on the floor behind him, and fell forward into the middle of his bed.

He lay there tired and sore, with his unbuttoned shirt draped around him, black socks on his feet, and dark blue boxers partially covering the bruises on the back of his thighs.

Thoughts of Liz were on his mind as he drifted into sleep, with a smile on his lips.

A Walk in the Park
Part 4

Liz stood in front of the bedroom mirror in Maria’s apartment looking at her front, and then turning around and looking at her back, and then turning around and looking at her front again. She had to admit, Maria had been right last night. Red was a good color for her.

She hadn’t been too sure when she saw the dress in the little shop last night, and after she looked at the price tag, she quickly put it back on the rack. She couldn’t afford a dress like that. But Maria had insisted it would be perfect for the fancy schmancy party they were going to, and be damned the price. Looking at the dress now, Liz was glad she let Maria talk her into it.

“Aren’t you gorgeous!” Maria exclaimed from the bathroom doorway. “You’re gonna knock ‘em dead tonight.”

Liz blushed, unaccustomed to such praise. Shaking her head she pointed her finger at Maria and said, “No, you’re going to knock them dead. Look at you!”

“Didn’t I tell you this was a killer dress?” Maria twirled around in a circle. “Michael doesn’t know what he’s missing, the poor sot.” The beads on the form fitting dress sparkled in the light and the subtle green color complimented her skin tone. “Are you almost ready?”

“Yes,” Liz nodded. She’d spent the day with Maria, doing girl things like fixing each other’s hair and makeup, and gossiping and things, and for the first time in a long time, Liz actually felt excited about doing something. Maybe tonight wouldn’t be a total disaster after all.

“Okay girlfriend,” Maria cried out excitedly. “Let’s go!”

* * * * *

Max lifted a glass of champagne from the tray and made his rounds, stopping here and there to join in conversations. There was a time when he would have prowled the room, judging the various beauties and deciding which one he would take back to his bed, but he wasn’t interested in that tonight. No, he hadn’t been interested in that for awhile now.

Not that he didn’t notice the beauties all around him. He’d have to be blind not to. The blonde with Senator McGrath had been giving him the eye since he arrived and she definitely would have been on his list of possibilities. Her ample bosom spilled enticingly from her dress and he was sure she would have been quite satisfying. But tonight, she wasn’t what he was looking for.

A voice grated on his ears and he cringed, turning to look behind him. Oh fuck! There she was. It looked like she hadn’t noticed him yet. He ducked his head and headed toward the other side of the room. There had to be nearly three hundred people here, surely he could get lost in the crowd.

“Max! Oh Max!” came that grating voice from behind him and Max gritted his teeth, trying to think of a way to escape. She was on him in a second, slipping her arm inside his and pressing her breasts against him.

“Hi Tess,” he said, trying to be polite.

* * * * *

“I don’t know about this,” Liz stood wide eyed at the entrance of the opulent ballroom. “There are so many people here.”

“Just stick with me girlfriend,” Maria smiled. “I know how to work a room!”

“Maria, I am so out of my league here,” Liz fretted.

“Believe me Liz, these people are no better than you are,” Maria tried to reassure her.

Liz appreciated Maria’s encouragement, but she still felt out of place. Her eyes swept over the room and for just a moment she thought she saw a familiar face in the crowd. Her pulse rate quickened and she craned her neck to see better, but it must have been her imagination. Wishful thinking probably. She couldn’t see Max’s handsome face anywhere.

Across the room, Max tried to extricate himself from Tess. He dropped a napkin on the floor and bent over to pick it up, intentionally breaking out of her grip. He stepped away from her as he stood up and said, “Excuse me for a minute Tess. I need to find the rest room.”

“I’ll go get us a refill,” she winked at him, holding up her empty champagne glass.

Max quickly walked away, wondering if he should just call it a night. His father expected him to attend these types of events, schmoosing with the bigwigs. It was good for the firm to be seen, and usually he enjoyed them, but his heart wasn’t in it tonight. No, his heart would rather be in Central Park, watching for a dark haired beauty and her monster dog.

He made his way across the room, headed for the exit doors when the mass of humanity parted and for just a second, for one infinitesimal moment, he thought he saw her. Dark hair, piled high on her head. Pale skin and luscious red lips. A tiny figure draped in red. Was she really here?

“Liz?” her name escaped his lips as he pushed his way through the throng of people. “Liz?”

As Max pushed through the crowd searching for Liz, Maria took her hand and led her toward a table laden with food and refreshments. Liz continued to sweep her gaze around the room, but she must have been mistaken. She didn’t see him anywhere.

“Here,” Maria offered Liz a small plate to pile high with finger foods. “And here,” she pressed a glass of champagne into her hand. “You definitely need this.”

“I’m not much of a drinker,” Liz eyed the bubbly liquid.

“That’s all well and good,” Maria lifted a glass for herself, “but as long as it’s free and it’s flowing, enjoy!” She clinked glasses with Liz in a toast and said with a broad smile, “Here’s to free food, free booze and mind blowing sex, in no particular order!”

Liz laughed; she couldn’t help it, and felt herself relaxing for the first time since she came through the door. Maria was so much fun.

“So you have a plate full of free food,” Maria smiled mischievously, “and a glass full of free booze. Now all you need is a partner for that mind blowing sex!”

“Maria!” Liz lowered her eyes and a blush rose up in her cheeks.

“Oh come on, Liz,” Maria lowered her voice conspiratorially. “I know you’re not a virgin so loosen up girl! Pick out one of these stud muffins here and have yourself a party!”

“Maria! Will you stop!” Liz laughed and covered her face with her hand. She could feel her cheeks turning red enough to match her dress, but she had to admit, if Max had been here, she might have been tempted. She turned even redder at the thought!

Max heard it then, the soft, sexy sound of her laughter. He’d recognize it anywhere. His pulse rate soared knowing she was here while he desperately searched the crowd. She was here . . . somewhere . . . his dreamgirl . . .

The crowd parted and there she was, a gorgeous vision standing across the room. Her hand covered her face like she was embarrassed, laughing at something Maria must have said. Her hair was piled high on her head, and she was wearing a red dress, just as he’d first thought, and she was a beautiful sight to behold. Her pale skin looked so creamy soft, even from across the room, and that dress showed off every single sexy curve. God she was hot. And sexy. And stunning.

And so incredibly beautiful.

Out of nowhere, Tess came barreling at him like a kamikaze pilot, shoving a drink in his hand and plastering herself to his side.

* * * * *

“Pick one!” Maria exclaimed, pulling Liz’s hand away from her face. Her arm swept around the room, pointing out a multitude of men. “There’s plenty to choose from, and most of them are handsome and rich! Go eenee meenee minee moe if you have to. Just don’t go home without one!”

Laughing at Maria’s antics, Liz let her eyes sweep over the room, playing along. She had no intention of sleeping with anyone tonight except a dog named Max, and he was most definitely sleeping on the floor!

The smile froze on her face and the sparkle left her eyes when she saw him, standing across the room, with a blonde laying all over him. Oh, she thought, crestfallen. She’d been right. Max was here, but he wasn’t alone. Of course she’d known that. Hadn’t she said a man that gorgeous would have a ton of women? She bit at her lower lip and fought back a surge of disappointment, cursing herself for being so stupid.

“What’s wrong?” Maria asked, disturbed by the sudden change in her. She gave herself a mental slap up the side of the head for forgetting what Michael had told her. “Oh Liz, don’t pay any attention to me. I just get a little carried away sometimes. I don’t mean anything by it. Let’s just have some fun. You and me. Who needs men anyway? This is girl’s night out.”

“Right,” Liz said shakily, trying to recover from the sight of Max enjoying the company of a blonde bombshell. And why shouldn’t he? He would never be interested in her. That Maria thought the cause of her distress was something else, well, maybe it was better that she believed that, and not this sinking feeling in the pit of her gut over something she never had in the first place. She was just being ridiculous as far as Max was concerned. He wasn’t hers. He never would be.

Glancing at him once more, she felt the color drain out of her face. He had his hand all over the blonde’s chest. Oh God, she didn’t want to see this.

* * * * *

“Jesus, I’m sorry Tess!” Max exclaimed. “I didn’t mean to spill that on you.”

Max dabbed a napkin at the drink he’d accidentally spilled down her front when she’d come out of nowhere like that. Of course, Tess took that opportunity to press her boobs against him, giving him the creeps. When was she going to get it through her stupid little head that he wasn’t interested?

“Sorry,” he said again, and followed up with, “Maybe you should go clean up.” Anything to get her the fuck away from him.

“Maybe we could go together,” she said throatily, “and you could clean me up.”

Max watched her tongue flick out suggestively and he blurted out, “No fuckin’ way!”

“What?” she puffed indignantly.

“Look, Tess,” Max pulled away from her. “I’ve tried to be as nice as I can be, but this has gone far enough. I’m not interested. We work in the same office building. That’s as far as our relationship goes.”

He glanced toward Liz then, and as the crowd closed back around him, he thought he saw something in her face, something that disturbed him. Had she been looking toward him and seen Tess pressing her body all over him, acting as if there was something between them? Was that dark haired angel of his thinking this slut was what he wanted?

“Max?” Tess held on to him, acting confused. “What are you saying?”

His yanked his arm away from her and said with finality, “Goodnight Tess.”

* * * * *

“Let’s go find a place to sit down,” Maria suggested and Liz tagged along. Tables were set up here and there around the crowed room, all of them filled with partygoers. Pushing through the throng of people, Maria grabbed Liz’s hand saying, “This way.”

Maria spied the doors leading out onto the balcony and decided a little fresh air would be good for them both. She led the way, determined to make sure Liz had a good time tonight. Out on the balcony things would be quieter and give her a chance to relax and maybe just enjoy herself for once.

As they neared the doors, Liz looked back over her shoulder, but she didn’t see him. She didn’t see the blonde either. Maybe they’d left together already. Disappointed, she followed Maria outside.

* * * * *

Max pushed through the crowd, his encounter with Tess nothing more than a bad memory now as he concentrated on finding Liz. He reached the spot where he’d seen her a minute ago, but she wasn’t there. Where had she disappeared to so fast?

Turning to a couple standing by the refreshment table, he asked, “Did you see a petite little brunette here a minute ago? Dark hair? Red dress? About this tall?” he held his hand at shoulder height.

“Sorry,” the guy shook his head. “’Fraid not.”

Max asked again and again, getting the same negative response. Frustration began to set in and he scratched his forehead while he eyed the room again. Where could she have gone?

Totally out of character, he climbed onto the refreshment table so he could get a better view of the room. He gingerly stepped between the vegetables and the dip, the chicken strips and the mushroom caps, the cheese cubes and the teeny weenies, looking for his dark haired angel.

* * * * *

On the balcony, Maria and Liz sat at a table enjoying the warm evening air.

“So how’d the interview go?” Maria chewed on a carrot stick.

“Good,” Liz smiled. “I think it went really well. It’s down to me and one other applicant. They said they’d let me know by next Friday.”

“That’s so exciting!” Maria enthused. “I hope you get it.”

“Me too,” Liz smiled. “It’s a five year research grant, and the work will be fascinating.”

“Yeah, well the only biology I’m interested in is the kind I have with Michael!” Maria laughed.

“Maria!” Liz flushed red. “You’re talking about my brother!”

“Sorry!” Maria grinned, still laughing. She gave Liz’s hand a squeeze and sobered. “I’ll miss you, though. Atlanta’s so far away.”

“I know . . .” Liz’s voice trailed off. It would be hard leaving.

A group of people gathering at the doors to the ballroom caught Maria’s eye. Outgoing as always, she asked aloud, “What’s going on?”

A tall blonde turned to Maria and Liz snorting a laugh, “Some guy’s walking all over the food table. He must be drunk.”

* * * * *

Max stood with his feet flanking the punch bowl, but he couldn’t see her anywhere. Unmindful of the shouts to get his ass down from there, Max spied the bandstand and got an idea. He jumped to the floor and pushed his way to the stage, not even noticing the strange looks he was getting. He climbed up the stairs and made his way to a microphone mounted on a stand. He tapped his finger against it to test if it was on and then cleared his throat.

“Liz Guerin, please come to the stage,” Max said loudly into the mic. He looked expectantly out at all the faces staring up at him, but he still couldn’t see her anywhere. “If Liz Guerin is in the room, please come to the stage.”

* * * * *

The blonde was still laughing as she turned back to Maria and Liz. “Now he’s on the stage asking for someone. He must really be blitzed. Gorgeous but blitzed.”

“Who’s he asking for?” Maria asked curiously.

“I don’t know. Some guy named Gavin or something.”

“Gavin?” Maria laughed. “Gavin? Maybe he had a fight with his boyfriend and he wants to kiss and make up!”

* * * * *

Now Max was really worried. Did she leave? Had she seen Tess all over him earlier and decided to leave?

Maybe she was in the bathroom. Maybe that’s why she couldn’t hear him. He jumped down from the stage and left the ballroom, planting himself outside the ladies room door.

He waited impatiently for the door to open and when an elderly woman emerged, he pounced. “Did you see a brunette in a red dress in there?”

“A what?” she asked in surprise.

“Short, about this tall,” Max said indicating Liz’s height. “Cute as a button.”

“Sorry, I didn’t notice.”

He folded his arms across his chest and continued to wait.

A minute later another woman exited the bathroom and Max asked once again, “Did you see a short little brunette in there? Wearing a long red dress with her hair piled up on her head? Really pretty.”

“I don’t think so,” the woman answered, staring at him like he was crazy, and then a tall blonde interrupted.

“Did you say you’re looking for a little brunette in a red dress?” she asked.

“Yes!” Max answered excitedly. “The dress has those thin little straps and she has long dark hair but she’s wearing it up and I think she has on a pair of those dangly earrings.”

“That sounds like the girl I saw out on the balcony a minute ago. I think she’s still there.”

“Thanks!” Max beamed and raced for the ballroom, and the balcony beyond. He shoved his way through the crowd, ignoring all the women that tried to catch his attention. He burst through the patio doors and stopped dead in his tracks.

There she was. He’d recognize her anywhere. Her back was to him, almost hidden by the high-backed chair she was sitting in, but he knew it was her. Maria was talking and stabbing the air with a carrot stick, but her mouth dropped open when she saw him.

Liz leaned forward, saying something to Maria, and then she slowly turned around. When their eyes met his knees went weak.

* * * * *

“That happened once to me, you know,” Maria poked the air with her carrot. “Some drunk climbed up on stage when I was ---”

“What?” Liz leaned forward. “What’s the matter, Maria?”

Maria just sat there, looking at something behind her shoulder with her mouth hanging open. Liz slowly turned around.

All sound ceased as she saw him, standing there in the doorway, looking at her. His clothes were somewhat disheveled, as if he had been running or something. His black tuxedo hung slightly askew, and as she stared at him, he ran his hands over his lapels, shrugging his shoulders to straighten his jacket and fix his appearance. He didn’t need to, though. He was gorgeous just as he was.

Max tugged on his jacket, thinking he must look a fright. He ran a hand through his dark hair and once he got his heart rate under control, he walked in her direction. What was the matter with him? Where was his suave, cool demeanor? Where was the Man with the Moves Max? Since when had he ever propped himself outside the ladies can, trying to pick up a girl? Never, that’s when! Until now.

As he neared the table he smiled almost nervously, wondering what the hell was wrong with his stomach. You’d think he had butterflies in there or something. Jesus! He wasn’t sixteen anymore! For that matter, he’d never acted this way at sixteen.

“Hi Liz. Maria.”

“Hi Max,” Liz looked up at him, standing just a foot away now. The very air around her was heating up and she felt a blush rise in her cheeks. He looked . . . delicious. “How are you?”

“I’m fine,” Max put his hand on the back of her chair. ‘Now’ he added silently. He was fine now that he’d found her.

“That’s good,” Liz tried to will her hands to stop trembling. What had brought him out here to the patio? Was he going to just say ‘Hi’ and then move on? Was he just making the rounds of people he knew? Was he just being polite?

“Have you been here long?” Max asked, still standing next to her. Why did he ask a dumb question like that? He’d never had a problem coming up with a good opening line before. Until now. Until her.

“Not too long. You?” She noticed how he hovered next to her but didn’t attempt to sit down, reinforcing the idea that he was just stopping by to say ‘hi’ before going on his way. She wished . . . she wished . . . it didn’t matter what she wished for. Her wishes never came true.

“Awhile,” Max replied and just stared down into her chocolate eyes. “I’ve been here awhile.” He wanted to sit down, wanted to spend the evening with her, but maybe that was presumptuous of him. He should wait for her to ask him to join their table.

Maria stared at the two of them, hiding her smile behind her hand. Max was so engrossed in Liz that he hadn’t taken his eyes off her since he burst through the doors. Even when he had greeted her, his gaze remained riveted on Liz.

And Liz. Maria could tell by the blush in her cheeks that Liz was in heaven, just being near Max. These two had it bad!

“Are you . . . here with someone?” Max asked and then cringed. That was definitely not a recommended pick up line. Why was his brain going to mush? That was what he was afraid of, that she was here with someone else, but he didn’t usually voice his fears out loud. Hastily, he added, “Is Michael here too?”

“No,” Liz answered. “Just me and Maria. Girl’s night out.”

“Oh,” Max took a relieved breath and nervously tugged on his ear. Girl’s night out. But wait. Did that mean she had a boyfriend and she didn’t bring him tonight so she and Maria could have some fun together, or did it mean she and Maria were doing a girls night out because Liz didn’t have a boyfriend to bring to the party?

“Hey Max,” a hand slapped him on the shoulder from behind. Max turned quickly to see Tom Hastings, a member of the Prosecuting Attorney’s office and a colleague of Michael’s.

“Hey Tom,” Max smiled and shook his hand vigorously. “How the hell are ya? I haven’t seen you since I kicked your ass on the Steven’s case!”

“Don’t remind me,” Tom laughed. “What’s the score now? Twenty for you, two for me?”

“Who’s counting?” Max smirked.

“You are,” Tom said knowingly and then turned to the others. “Hey Maria. Nice to see you again Liz.”

“Hi Tom,” both girls said at the same time.

The sound of music drifted through the doors from the ballroom and Tom focused on Maria. “It sounds like they’re playing our song! Care to join me?”

“Sure,” Maria smiled. She loved to dance, and she thought giving Max and Liz a few minutes alone together would be a good idea. A very good idea. She pushed her chair out from the table and followed Tom into the ballroom and onto the already crowded dance floor.

Max started to sit down, and then thought better of it. His thighs were still incredibly sore, and anyway, why sit down when he could ask her to dance? Hesitantly, he said, “Do you want to . . .” and held his hand out to her.

Liz stared at his outstretched hand, noticing the scrapes from Thursday night’s encounter in the park, and then she looked back up into his eyes. “Dance?” she asked, sounding like she was surprised he would ask her.

A smile spread over his face and he nodded his head. Feeling her pulse rate quicken, she slipped her hand into his and slowly rose to her feet. They stepped away from the table and Liz was surprised when he stopped short, instead of leading her into the ballroom and the waiting dance floor.

“This is a good spot,” Max said huskily, liking the privacy the patio afforded them. He didn’t want to share her with anyone.

Liz listened to the music playing softly around them, feeling like she was in the middle of a fairy tale, where the handsome Prince comes and rescues the fair maiden from her mundane life. When he stopped and pulled her close to him, she knew this must be make believe. Nothing like this ever happened to her, not in the real world.

No, the real world for her was death and dying and heartache and pain, not a Prince that would kiss her lips and wake her from her sleep, not a knight in shining armor come to slay the demons that haunted her dreams.

His hand closed around hers and brought it to his chest, making her swallow hard, feeling just how hard that chest really was. She felt his right hand touch her waist and then slip around to her back, and then he was touching her bare skin. Had she really just heard his sudden intake of breath? The same sudden inhalation she’d just experienced when she felt the warmth of his palm at the small of her back?

Max tried to keep his breathing under control, but it was hard. When he circled his hand around her back, he hadn’t expected to touch skin. Bare skin. He’d been so intent on her face he hadn’t noticed her dress was backless, all the way down to her waist. His desire for her intensified. Touching the soft skin of her bare back was causing him to react strongly. Very strongly.

Liz swallowed again, feeling the heat of his hand on the small of her back. Hadn’t she told Maria this dress was too revealing, with the spaghetti straps, and the plunging neckline, both front and back? Had she thanked her yet for insisting that she buy it? Because if she hadn’t, she most certainly should. The feel of his hand on her back touched an area of her heart she didn’t think existed anymore.

Max breathed deeply, drinking in the intoxicating scent that his senses now recognized as Liz. Touching her, seeing her, breathing her was becoming necessary for survival. How else could he explain his actions? Looking down at the top of her head, he wondered, is this what it feels like to fall in – to be in – what the hell was happening to him?

As one song ended and another began, they continued to dance. One slow dance after another, no matter how fast the music. Max longed to pull her body close to his as they moved, but he kept a space between them. He couldn’t hold her the way he wanted to. No, his body was reacting too strongly to her for that.

Liz longed to bury her face against him, to feel him press against her with the same type of desire she was feeling for him, but knew he didn’t. He was being polite, dancing with her so she wouldn’t be alone, but keeping his distance.

“I tried to call you,” Max said when he thought he was ready to form a coherent sentence.

“You did?” she said in surprise, feeling those butterflies swarming in her stomach. She’d checked the messages when she returned from the shopping trip with Maria last night, but they were all for Michael, various law firms throughout the city with a message that just couldn’t wait ‘til he returned.

“When you didn’t pick up, I didn’t leave a message.”

“Oh,” she mumbled.

He looked down at the top of her dark hair again. There was something about her that made him possessive, protective . . . privileged to even be in her company. He didn’t want those feelings to go away. He wondered what she was feeling, if she was feeling anything toward him.

He did call, Liz sighed inwardly and ventured a look up into his eyes. But his calling was a good thing, and she didn’t think she could survive in a world where good things happen. No, when good things happened, then bad things happened back. Really bad things.

“Liz . . . I . . .” Max started to say, but the words stuck in his throat.

When he didn’t complete his thought, she asked, “What? You what?”

“I’m glad you’re here,” Max smiled, lost in her eyes.

Melting into him, she breathed in his rich masculine scent, “Me too.”

Max pulled her close then, pressing his hand against the small of her back until their bodies came together. Liz rested her cheek against his strong chest and closed her eyes, feeling warm, and secure, and protected. Max breathed deeply, growing accustomed to her scent now, recognizing it, responding to it. Needing it.

His hand rose up her back, feeling her bare skin, her smooth, delicate, incredibly soft, bare skin. His eyes closed, drinking in the sensations of her tiny body, moving against him as they danced in small circles around the balcony.

The world shrank to just the two of them, dancing in the warm night air, underneath a canopy of stars.

A Walk in the Park
Part 5

Maria stood by the doors, watching Max and Liz as they danced, moving oh so slowly, her head resting on his chest, his cheek against the top of her head. Who was this man? This Max? Could he be the one who could heal Liz, and bring her back to life?

What did they know about him? Nothing really. Maria didn’t even know his last name. She didn’t think Liz knew it either. Who was this dark haired mystery man, and what were his intentions?

Maria walked forward and touched Max on the arm saying, “Hey guys, the music stopped playing five minutes ago.”

Startled out of their own private world, Max and Liz popped their eyes open. With a self conscious smile Max stepped away from Liz, reluctantly releasing her hand.

“Why don’t we sit down, and we can all get to know each other,” Maria suggested.

“Sure,” Max smiled and led Liz back to the table. He wanted to know everything about her. Where she was born. Where she grew up. Where she went to school.

Where she’d been all his life.

Liz smiled up at Max, surprised, delighted, elated. He was going to stay? He wasn’t just making his rounds?

When they reached the table, Max pulled the chair out for Liz and reached for Maria’s too, but she waved him off. What a gentleman, Maria thought, watching him as he made his way to the chair next to Liz. Was he for real?

Questions about Liz filled his mind as he pulled out the chair. As soon as his butt hit the seat he bolted back up to his feet with a painful gasp.

“Max, what’s wrong?” Liz asked worriedly. She’d seen the way his face flinched in what looked like obvious pain. He leaned forward into the table trying to take the strain off his legs, but the abrasions on his palms weren’t completely healed yet either. Liz reached out to touch him, covering his large hand with her small one. “Max?”

“Old war wound?” Max said jokingly and then shrugged his shoulders. It was better if he just stood. Sitting wasn’t working too well right now.

“Does it hurt that bad?” Liz asked, feeling tremendously guilty. “Did you get it checked? By a doctor?”

“Not yet,” he admitted with a lopsided smile.

“Max, you could have an infection setting in,” Liz scolded, going into medical mode. “You haven’t had anyone look at it?”

“No. You’re the last one that looked at my tush. Well, you and Maria,” he joked, trying to make light of it, even though it really did hurt like hell.

“Max, infection is not something to take lightly. I thought you would have gone to the doctor yesterday.”

“I had a really busy day and I just couldn’t fit it in,” he tried to explain.

“That’s no excuse when it comes to your health,” Liz admonished. “You can’t just ignore these things and hope they get better. You could end up losing a leg if it’s not treated properly.”

“Are you serious?” Max said, losing his joking tone.

“She knows what she’s talking about,” Maria interjected and pointed at Liz. “Harvard School of Medicine.”

“You’re a doctor?” Max asked, staring at Liz. He’d known she was a smart one from the moment he first saw her, but Harvard School of Medicine smart? Wow.

“No, I’m not a doctor.”

The furtive look that passed between the two women had Max intrigued. There was definitely a story there he wanted to find out about.

“Dog bites can be serious, Max,” Liz steered the subject back to him.

“What do you think I should do?” he asked, feeling apprehensive now. “Should I wait ‘til Monday to see my physician, or should I go to the emergency room and have it looked at now?”

“Do you want me to take a look? To see if infection has set in?” Liz offered.

Maria looked at Liz with raised eyebrows. This could be interesting, she thought, remembering the sight of the two of them in Michael’s bathroom with his butt hanging out and Liz’s hand all over him. Hmmm. The possibilities . . .

“You wouldn’t mind?” Max asked. “I’d hate to waste the rest of a Saturday night in the emergency room if it’s nothing.”

“No, I don’t mind,” Liz replied. “It’s the least I can do, considering it’s because of me you got bit in the first place. But where?” she looked around with her tone taking on a teasing quality, “I don’t think you want to drop your pants right here!”

He looked at the smile breaking over her face and leaned toward her with a smile of his own, teasing right back. “At least I’m wearing underwear tonight.”

“What a shame,” Liz blurted out, and then her eyes got huge and heat rose up in her cheeks. Had she just said that out loud?

Maria looked at Liz, shocked by what she’d just heard. Was Liz flirting? This was a red letter day! Elizabeth Parker was smiling and flirting! She couldn’t wait to tell Michael!

Max saw the blush rising in Liz’s cheeks and he had a feeling that she hadn’t meant it to come out that way. Should he come back with a witty response, add a suggestive remark of his own, or just ignore it? He didn’t want to say the wrong thing. His normal response would have been a sexual comeback, leading into sexual banter, with the intention of it leading into a night of sex. But for the first time in his life, casual sex wasn’t what he wanted, and seeing the rosy color of her cheeks, he was pretty certain Liz wasn’t the casual sex type.

“What can I say?” Max shrugged nonchalantly. “Underwear seemed appropriate with a tux.”

Liz blushed furiously but the smile on her face was the cutest damn thing he had ever seen. There was such an air of innocence about her, something he wasn’t used to. When he was around her, he didn’t want to be Smooth Talking Max anymore. Hoping she wouldn’t take this the wrong way, he said, “Actually, my sister has an apartment in this building. Upstairs. I have a key. We could go up there, or,” he looked around for a moment and then pointed, “I can drop my drawers behind that tree over there.”

Liz looked in the direction he was pointing and saw a spindly little tree in an oversized pot by the edge of the balcony railing. Looking back at him, she could see the humor dancing in his eyes, and they both said at the same time, “Upstairs!”

Max held out his hand to help her to her feet. As she rose, Liz turned to Maria and asked, “Are you coming?”

As Maria listened and watched the exchange going on in front of her, she’d been formulating a plan. Liz didn’t need a girl’s night out. No, what she really needed was something Max might be able to give her.

“Look Babe, that cheap ass champagne they serve around here has given me a killer of a headache. I’m gonna call it a night. Max? Can I count on you to get Liz home safely?”

“Me?” Max said in surprise and looked at Liz, hastily adding, “Of course! Of course I’ll get her home safely.” He liked Maria, but the thought of spending the rest of the evening with Liz . . . alone . . . to say he liked that idea was an understatement.

“Maria, no,” Liz stammered. “If you don’t feel good I should just-”

“Nope, I’m not going to let my headache ruin your night too,” Maria insisted. “Unless,” she let her gaze fall on Max, “you had other plans for the evening? We wouldn’t want to impose-”

“No!” Max cut in quickly. “No imposition at all! I had absolutely no plans what-so-ever.”

“Are you sure?” Liz questioned, remembering him with the blonde on his arm earlier. “I don’t want to keep you from-”

“I’m absolutely positive,” he smiled. He touched her cheek with the back of his finger and then pulled his hand away quickly, afraid that she might think the contact was too intimate.

The touch wasn’t lost on Maria, and it served to reinforce her initial assessment. “It’s settled then. I’m going home, and you two go have a good time.” She leaned close to Liz and said in a voice intentionally loud enough for Max to hear, “I won’t wait up for you.”

Then lowering her voice so that only Liz could hear, Maria added, “Remember the free food and the free booze we talked about earlier? I think Max is the mind blowing part.” Her friend’s mouth dropped open but Maria could tell Liz had already had that thought cross her mind.

“Goodnight Maria,” Max couldn’t hold back his smile. This night was getting better and better! He placed his hand on Liz’s back and led her toward the ballroom and the elevators beyond.

Maria watched them go, feeling both excited and apprehensive at the same time. She couldn’t help wondering if she was giving Liz a chance at happiness for a change, or throwing her to the dogs.

* * * * *

Max reached into the front pocket of his pants and fished out the key to Isabel’s apartment. “I’m afraid I won’t be able to introduce you to my sister. She’s in Europe this weekend. Rome, I think, or maybe it’s Paris this time. I can’t keep track of her anymore.”

“Really?” Liz said with interest. “I’ve never been to Europe.” She’d never been anywhere.

“No?” Max opened the door and ushered Liz inside. “You should go sometime.” He flipped the switch by the door and the spacious apartment filled with light, reflecting an elegance Liz wasn’t used to. Paintings adorned the walls and fine porcelain statues leant the room an almost museum quality.

“Wow, what a room,” Liz looked around awestruck.

“Yeah,” Max agreed, smiling at the look on her face. “Isabel has been both lucky and unlucky, in love.” Liz looked at him curiously and he elaborated, “She’s married well, but her husbands don’t seem to survive her. She’s been married twice, and was left a very wealthy widow both times. She’s working on number three right now.”

It was a standing joke in his family, Isabel’s Black Widow title, but the smile on his face disappeared when he saw the look in Liz’s eyes. Deep in those dark pools he could see a depth of misery that no one should ever feel. Was it something he said? Concern filling him, he placed his hand on her shoulder and asked, “Liz? Are you okay?”

“Max, that’s so sad,” Liz said with heartfelt emotion. “To lose someone you love . . .”

The compassion in her eyes, the empathy for someone she didn’t even know, amazed him. Looking into her eyes, he realized an awful truth. She’d loved someone once, and lost him, in the most final of ways. Max wanted to fold her into his arms and take away the pain he saw in her. He wanted to protect her from whatever horrors she had seen or suffered or endured. He wanted to be the one that could make her forget that pain.

“How old is your sister?” Liz asked, trying to avoid answering his question.

Max could sense that she wasn’t willing to talk about whatever memory had surfaced. Not yet. Not to him. Letting her steer their conversation, he answered, “Twenty-seven. Same as me. We’re twins.”

“That’s so young, to have lost so much.”

“Yes. Yes, it is,” Max said solemnly as she turned her face away. Wanting to change the subject, he impulsively took her hand and said, “Come with me. You’ve got to see this!”

Max led her deeper into the apartment, down a hall and through a large bedroom adorned with white lace and peach accents, which Liz assumed to be Isabel’s. She had to nearly run to keep up with his long strides and for a moment she felt like she was being pulled along by her other Max, straining at the end of his leash.

Her ‘other’ Max?

As soon as the thought entered her mind, she pushed it away. This man wasn’t her Max. She only wished he was. His hand felt so warm and soft where it touched hers. So . . . alive. And when he smiled at her, he made her feel alive too. She hadn’t felt that way in a long time.

He pulled her through the bedroom and into a bathroom easily the size of her first apartment. A huge soaker tub set in a marble platform filled an entire wall, a wall made of glass. She could see the skyline of the city through that glass, and the trees and lawns of Central Park were clearly visible. It was a breathtaking sight.

“Max, it’s beautiful,” Liz said, once again awestruck.

“I thought you’d like it,” he beamed. Laughing, he said, “I’ve always wanted to take a soak in that tub, but Isabel won’t let me.”

“She won’t?” Liz laughed, listening to the petulant tone of his voice, like a little boy who wasn’t getting his way.

Turning to Liz with a devilish look he said, “One of these days I’m just going to do it. Maybe-”

When he didn’t finish his thought, Liz looked at him closely. “Maybe what?”

Max had to bite his tongue to hold back his typical remark, too many years of playing games and making conquests, things he didn’t want to do with her. He’d been about to say, ‘Maybe you’d like to join me’, a come on line if there ever was one. Old habits were hard to break. He dipped his head and said instead, “Maybe I better do it when Isabel is out of town, because if she caught me, she’d probably kick my ass.”

That made Liz laugh and the sweet sound of it made Max almost giddy. Her eyes twinkled with merriment and she laughed even harder when he said, “She could do it too. Isabel is an Amazon!”

Max fought against the images swirling through his mind, of what it might be like to have her join him in that bath. He could picture himself slipping the straps of her dress off her shoulders, then watching it fall to the floor and pool around her feet. He could see the way her creamy skin would look, the way her nipples would stand out from that creamy skin, the way her tiny waist would lead down to her ---

No, don’t think about it, he scolded himself. Don’t think about what it would be like to touch her. To hold her naked body to his. To make love to her. To . . . make love? Make Love? MAKE LOVE?

He didn’t make love.

He enjoyed casual sex with willing partners. Very willing partners. There was no love involved. It was the way he liked it. He was good at it. Satisfying sex without commitments, without entanglements, without tomorrows.

So why was he thinking about making love?

“An Amazon, huh?” Liz echoed, picturing Zena the Warrior Princess, entering the bathroom and chasing Max out of her tub. Her mind filled with the image of Max, naked and wet, running for dear life, the bubbles disappearing from the strategic places they were covering until he was fully exposed in all his masculine glory. OH MY! Her pulse was definitely racing now. Trying to shake the image from her mind, she self-consciously cleared her throat.

“Uh, where um . . . where does your sister keep the first aid supplies?”

“Over here,” Max answered, eager for the distraction. He led her to the double sink vanity and pulled a drawer open, filled to the brim with an assortment of Band-Aids and gauze and tape and ointments. He watched Liz as she assessed the contents of the drawer. When she looked up at him expectantly, he arched an eyebrow, uncertain as to what she wanted.

“If you want me to look at your legs, you’re gonna have to drop ‘em,” she surprised Max with her boldness.

“Yes Ma’am,” he nodded, feeling anything but calm. It’d been different the other night, when the wounds had been fresh and the pain so sharp. Now, well, he wasn’t sure what to think. With her obvious medical training, she was probably looking at this with detachment, the way doctors looked at naked bodies all day long and weren’t affected.

But right now, all he could think about was the fact that the girl he had an ache for, the girl that had visited his dreams for months now, the girl he longed to make love to, had just asked him to drop his pants.

He slipped his jacket off and looked awkwardly around, wondering where to put it. Liz, seemingly in control and displaying her medical detachment, took his jacket and hung it on the hook on the back of the bathroom door. He watched her as she walked back to him in her long red dress, with the thin little straps, and the neckline that plunged between her breasts; breasts that he knew were free of the encumbrance of a bra. Breasts that jutted out against the soft material of the dress. The dress that could so easily slip from her shoulders and fall to the floor –

no. No. NO. NO!

That wasn’t what they were here for. That wasn’t what she was here for. She reached his side once again and inventoried the contents of the drawer, while Max shook himself mentally. He could do this. He wasn’t some teenage boy, horny and eager to lose his virginity. No. He was a mature man, being examined for an injury, and sex had nothing to do with this. Oh yeah? Then why had his cock decided to stir to life? Instead of lying there like a good boy, Mini Max decides it’s time to become Maxi Max, flying high and eager for action. Fuck! Yes please!

Down boy, DOWN!

Fighting for control, Max turned his back to Liz and reached for the front of his pants. He unfastened the button, lowered the zipper, and after a brief hesitation, he let his pants slip down his legs to pool on the floor. He swallowed hard and glanced over his shoulder as Liz hunkered down behind him, looking at the back of his legs.

“Silk?” she smiled up at him. He stared down at her with a puzzled face.

“Silk?” he echoed, not understanding. He bet her legs were silky smooth. He already knew the skin on her back was. Soft and warm and silky-

“Silk boxers,” she elaborated, and her smile broadened.

God she was cute when she smiled. Max smiled right back. “I’m wearing a tux. Silk seemed appropriate.”

“Very,” she agreed.

He didn’t miss the way her cheeks were turning pink again. God she was cute when she was embarrassed.

“I need you to pull this up, so I can see better,” she indicated where his shorts were partially covering his left thigh. Max reached down for the hem, pulling it up to expose his entire leg. Nodding, she said, “That’s better.”

He’d taken off the wrap she’d applied the other night and now his wounds were clearly exposed. She looked closely at the puncture marks noting that the lower ones, the ones that were superficial, appeared to be almost healed. The upper ones, the ones where Max’s canines had sunk in deeper, were still red, but healing. No sign of infection was present.

“Your leg is healing quite nicely,” she said as her hand touched his inner thigh. Her thumb brushed over the lower wounds, which were really nothing worse than scratches. She touched one of the upper wounds and noticed how he flinched. Those were deeper. “I’m going to put some Neosporin on to help the healing.”

“Okay,” he watched her reached into the drawer, searching for the tube. From this angle he could see down the front of her dress, and the valley between her breasts. Stop, he chided himself. Stop looking. He felt like a dog for doing it, but he couldn’t stop looking.

Her sweet little hand on his inner thigh was making his body betray him, reacting on its own to the feel of her hand so close to his jewels. He bit down on his lower lip trying to take his mind off of how warm and soft her skin felt, how gently her fingers touched him, how he ached to have her touch something else. He bit his lip harder, shocked by the internal battle he was waging. He didn’t usually lose control like this! She was just touching his thigh, for God’s sake. So why did he have a boner the size of Italy?

Think of something else. Think of something else. Think of something else.

The mantra kept repeating through his brain, but all he could think about was her hand, on his inner thigh, and how much he wanted her to reach higher –

Think of something else. Think of something else. Think of something else!

Tess wants in my pants. Tess wants in my pants. Tess wants in my pants.

That’s better. He’d never deflated so fast before. At least Tess was good for something. Just the thought of her touching him was enough to make him swear off sex all together.

Max watched Liz as she picked up the tube and squeezed a strip of cream onto her finger. Returning to position behind him, he felt the cold ointment touch his skin, and then her finger rubbing it into the muscles of his thigh. Oh God that felt good.

“He really did bruise you,” Liz said, feeling awful. His thighs were a mass of black and blue marks.

“Yeah, he did,” Max said, looking over his shoulder at her. It’s okay though, he thought silently. If it hadn’t been for that devil dog, she wouldn’t be here now, with her hand on his thigh.

She finished rubbing the first aid cream on his left leg and shifted position to look at his right. As she moved, her shoe caught on the edge of her dress, and she hiked it up to get it out of the way, exposing the length of her leg. Damn, what an incredible looking leg!

Tess wants in my pants. Tess wants in my pants. Tess wants in my pants!

Her hands were on his right thigh now and he obediently raised the hem of his boxers, like he had just done on the other side. Her fingers moved over his skin, touching him here and there and then he felt the cream being rubbed into his skin again. He closed his eyes, enjoying it now, thinking of Italy.

“Your right leg looks fine,” she said, breaking his thoughts.

“Guh-” Max had to clear his throat before he could get the word out. “Good.”

“Just one place left to look,” Liz tried to lift the hem of his shorts to see the injury on his right cheek, but there wasn’t enough give in the material; it wouldn’t lift high enough. There was only one other option.

“Um, Max? I just need to ease this down . . .”

Max felt her fingers slip under the waistband of his boxers making his eyes nearly pop out of his head. More and more of his skin was exposed until his ass was once again on full display. He could feel her breath on his skin, her face just inches from his butt, and if he turned around . . .

DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

She lowered his shorts, pulling the material below the curve of his oh so beautiful backside, and Liz chastised herself for letting go of her medical detachment. But his butt looks so cute. The mark on his cheek where Max connected looked inflamed and she had the fleeting desire to kiss it to make it all better. Licking her lips and shaking herself back to reality, she got the first aid cream and went to work.

He felt her hand resting on his hip now. His naked hip. So very close to Italy. He felt the cool cream touch his skin again and he ventured a look behind him. He shouldn’t have. There she was, with her face just inches from his ass, staring at his butt, with her tongue darting out from between her lips. Oh God! That little tongue, so pink and wet, so close to . . .

DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

He closed his eyes, trying to will the image away.

“I’m afraid Max took a chunk of meat out,” Liz said as she finished her ministrations. “Once this heals, I think it’s going to leave a dimple. Max marked you forever.”

“He did, huh?” Max said coyly, somehow liking the idea. He would forever carry a reminder of the night they met.

“Done,” she said, and he felt his boxers slide back up his butt and settle into place around his hips. “You can get dressed now.”

What if I don’t want to? Max shook that thought aside and buried it where it belonged. He was about to reach down for his pants when Liz tripped on the hem of her dress as she tried to rise to her feet. She fell against him hard.

“Sorry,” she squeaked.

Max grabbed her by the arms to steady her. He pulled her to her feet, staring down into her eyes, her face just inches from his own, her full red lips so inviting, her body so close yet so far away. He wanted to kiss her. He wanted to crush her body against his. He wanted ---

Her hands suddenly touched his hips, not to push him away, not just to steady herself, not to regain her balance. Her hands touched his hips --- to pull him closer.

His reaction was instantaneous. His lips swooped down to capture hers, nearly lifting her off her feet as his arms surrounded her and pulled her closer. He ravaged her mouth, tasting her lips with his tongue, darting inside her mouth while his hands roamed over the skin of her exposed back.

He stood in the middle of his sister’s bathroom, kissing his dark haired angel, with his pants around his ankles, and Italy standing tall and proud.

Liz couldn’t believe what was happening. He was kissing her. He was touching her. Oh God! He was very happy to see her! She could feel that happiness pressing into her stomach. She’d never felt so much happiness before. His hands on her back felt like fire, his tongue in her mouth was like candy, his kisses were sweeter than anything she had ever tasted.

She wanted more.

He felt her hands slip under his shirt, roaming over his back, with her red nails digging into his skin. God! Did she want him as much as he wanted her? Was it possible? This quiet, shy girl he was in love with --- he was in love with?

He broke off the kiss and stared into her alluring eyes as he thought that over. Was it true? For the first time in his life, was he in love? He’d barely spoken to her. He didn’t know anything about her. How could he be in love with her?

He just could.

His eyes swept over her face, taking in every beautiful detail, and then he claimed her lips again. She met his attack with an assault of her own, devouring his lips as she let her desire carry her away. His hand, roving over her back slipped under the material of her dress, caressing her side, inching closer to the side of her breast. He wanted her. He wanted her now.

“Max!” Isabel’s strident voice cried out from the bathroom doorway. “Just what the hell do you think you’re doing!”

I know, I know. Isabel interruptus. But you didn’t want Max to jump Liz’s bones yet, did you? You did??? But they haven’t even gone on an official date yet!! Come back next week to see what happens next!

A Walk in the Park
Part 6

Isabel stood in the doorway of her bathroom, with her hands on her hips, glaring at Max as he scrambled to pull up his pants, hiding behind a tiny little girl in a red party dress. The thin straps of that party dress had fallen off the girl’s shoulders, and the whole thing looked this close to falling off her completely. They both looked flushed, red faced, with the girl hiding her face behind her hands. The glare Isabel sent them was just this side of lethal.

“Isabel! What are you doing here?” Max cried out in surprise. He finished zipping up his pants, but he still felt terribly exposed.

“I live here!” Isabel exclaimed. “What the hell are you doing here? Like that! In my bathroom!” She narrowed her eyes and looked from Max to her tub, making sure it hadn’t been used.

“I thought you were in Rome!” Max tried to divert her attention. A good defense was a strong offense.

“I was,” she drilled her eyes into his. “And now I’m here. The question is why are you here! And who are you here with!”

Isabel’s fiery gaze turned toward Liz, causing her to shrink back into Max, clutching at him for protection. Isabel really was an Amazon! As tall as Max, even taller in heels. Full bodied. Stern looking, especially standing there with her hands on her hips, looking like she was ready to pounce. No wonder Max thought she could kick his ass! Her foot tapped on the floor impatiently. Not a good sign.

“Who . . . ?” Max stuttered, and then said, “This is Liz. My . . . Doctor!”

“Your what?” Isabel pursed her lips. “You’re up here in my bathroom playing Doctor!”

“No, really. I’m serious-”

“Max! Are you ever going to grow up!” Isabel fumed.

“You see,” Liz tried to explain, still clinging to Max. “Max got bit by a dog, my dog, and we were at a party, and we came up here so I could check his wounds so they don’t get infect-”

“Is that what you call it?” Isabel turned her attention from Liz back to Max. “She was checking your ‘wounds’? Because it sure didn’t look like she was checking a wound unless it was at the back of your throat, and the only way to reach it was with her tongue!”

“Max,” Liz whispered to him, “she’s scaring me. You better take off your pants.”

“What?” Max gaped at her with his eyes nearly bulging out of his head. She wanted him to do WHAT?

“Show her what Max did to you,” Liz urged. “Then she’ll understand what we were doing.”

“Are you sure?” Max whispered into her ear.

“No, but do it anyway.”

Max looked at Liz like he was a sacrificial lamb being led to slaughter. He was going to be so dead in a minute. His hands went to the front of his pants.

“Max, what are you doing!” Isabel hissed as she watched him unzip his pants and turn his back to her. “Don’t you dare moon me!”

His pants fell to his knees and Isabel’s demeanor immediately changed.

“Oh, Max! What happened to you?”

Wow, Max thought at the sudden change in his sister. From wrath to warmth in the blink of an eye! His sister was being nice now, concerned about what happened to him. Miracles really do happen.

Max beamed at Liz, genuine in his sentiment when he asked her, “Where have you been all my life?”

* * * * *

“I think that was the most amazing turnaround I’ve ever witnessed,” Max laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. “You have no idea what it was like growing up with my sister. She just eats people up and spits ‘em out, but you,” Max looked at Liz in amazement, “you had her eating out of your hand!”

They strolled slowly along the streets of the Upper West Side, walking side by side, headed back to Liz’s apartment. The night was beautiful, warm and quiet, with the moon and the stars lighting their way. Max walked casually, relaxed, with one hand in the pocket of his pants and the jacket of his tux slung over his shoulder. Liz walked comfortably beside him, enjoying one of the most wonderful nights of her life.

“I was lucky,” she insisted, deflecting his praise. “If you want to know the truth, she scares the hell out of me!”

“If you want to know the truth,” Max laughed with embarrassment, “she scares the hell out of me too! Men especially don’t fare too well around her, so I try to keep my distance! You know when she told me not to moon her? I’ve wanted to do just that for so long!”

“Sibling rivalry?” Liz asked, loving the sound of his rich, throaty laugh. Loving the sound of him.

“I guess,” he admitted. “She’s older than me by twelve minutes, and she always lorded it over me that she was the oldest. She’s really a cold hearted bitch!”

“Max!” Liz admonished.

“Well, it’s true! Just ask her dead husbands!” As soon as he said it, he wished he could take it back. Too late he remembered what happened earlier when he mentioned Isabel had been widowed twice, but this time Liz didn’t react that way. He wondered if she had lost a husband or a fiancée or a lover, but she hadn’t volunteered the information and he didn’t want to pry. He was glad to see that this time, instead of the pain he’d seen in her eyes over a memory from her past, all he saw was the humor that he had intended. Maybe now that she’d actually met his sister, she understood!

“She can’t be that bad!” Liz chuckled. Max arched an eyebrow at her and she amended that to say, “Never mind!”

Max felt her slip her arm inside his and the contact served to remind him what transpired between them in Isabel’s apartment. He desperately wanted her, but maybe it was a good thing Isabel had interrupted them. What was that? Man on the Make Max, thinking coitus interruptus was a good thing? Maybe he thought that way because . . . Liz was special.

He’d known she was different from the first moment he saw her, that night outside the deli, walking her beast in the park. Her image had stayed with him for weeks afterward. He’d looked for her in every dark haired girl he saw. He’d tried to put her out of his mind, because frankly, she’d been disrupting his life, and she wasn’t even in it. His normally abundant sex life had suffered, and all but disappeared over the last few weeks. The few sexual encounters that he’d had had turned out to be highly unsatisfying. He just couldn’t get her out of his mind. No one else was good enough.

After that first sighting, it’d been weeks before he’d seen her again, and he tried to go on with his life as before. He still knew the moves, he still said the lines, but with each new woman that he took to his bed, with each round of sex games that he played, there was always something lacking. Something woefully missing. Now he understood what.

She was what was missing. This little dark haired angel by the name of Liz.

Now, tonight, walking in the warm night air with her at his side, he felt a sense of contentment he’d never felt before. Breaking the comfortable silence between them, Max asked, “So does Michael have any other brothers or sisters I don’t know about?”

“No,” she shook her head. “Just me.”

Michael had never been one to volunteer personal information. By the sound of Liz’s short answer, Max decided it must be a family trait.

“Did you grow up here? In New York?” Max asked, wanting to know everything about her. “Do your parents live here?”

“No,” she said again and he frowned at the sudden shadow that fell across her face.

“No what?” Max asked. “No, you didn’t grow up here, or no, your parents don’t live here?”

“I grew up in a little town in New Mexico,” she said, meeting his eyes. “Roswell. Maybe you’ve heard of it.”

“Sure, hasn’t everyone?” Max smiled, but noticed she wasn’t smiling anymore. “Does your family still live there?”

“No,” was her short answer.

She wasn’t looking at him anymore and he knew he was treading on sensitive ground but he was driven to know everything about her. Maybe her parents were divorced and it had been difficult on her. Or maybe she didn’t get along with them. Or maybe . . . oh God. That was it. By the body language she was giving out, that had to be it.

“Are your parents still . . .?” alive he finished silently.

Her dark eyes met his and she said softly, “No.”

“Aunts, Uncles?” he pressed, and felt his stomach twist as she shook her head no. As much as Isabel bugged the shit out of him, she was still his sister, and he loved her. He worked everyday, side by side with his dad. He ate dinner every Sunday with his mother. He couldn’t imagine not having family. Shaking his head sadly, he said, “You don’t have anyone?”

“I have Michael,” she said, biting on her lower lip. “I have Max.”

Feeling that sense of protectiveness for her kick in again, he took his hand out of his pocket and wrapped his arm around her, saying profoundly, “You have me.”

* * * * *

Max sat facing the door expectantly, listening to the familiar sounds it made right before his lady or his man opened it. He knew it was her this time, he could hear the tone of her voice on the other side. He heard another voice too, but he couldn’t put a face to it yet. The voice was too muffled to hear clearly, but it had a familiar sound to it. He was sure he had heard it before.

The door opened and he wagged his tail, happy to see his lady had returned. She came inside, telling him he was a good boy and then his ears picked up at the sight of the man behind her. It was his job to protect her and he needed to smell this man to see if he was allowed to be near her. He rushed forward and the man hesitated, standing perfectly still while Max sniffed his hand and his legs and stuck his nose up his butt. Ah yes, now he recognized him.

“Max, leave him alone!” Liz scolded the dog. To Max, she said, “Just let him smell your hand so he gets used to you.”

“I don’t think it’s my hand he’s interested in,” Max yelped as the dog’s nose got overly friendly.

“Max! Down boy!” Liz scolded again. “Sit!”

Max dutifully obliged, sitting by the door with his tail wagging, waiting patiently for their nightly routine to begin.

“I’m gonna just . . .” Liz said haltingly and pointed behind her, “um, just . . . go change. I’ll be right back.”

“Okay,” Max smiled at her, watching her tiny figure retreat down the hall. He watched her lift her long skirt to take off her high heels and then she darted through a doorway and disappeared. The image of her bare back, and the memory of how that skin felt when he’d touched it earlier had him craving to touch more, but he resisted.

Stepping into the living room, he draped his jacket over a nearby chair and rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt. When she said she needed to get home and walk the dog, he eagerly offered to accompany her. He didn’t want their night to be over yet, and a nice walk in the park was appealing. Not as appealing as sweeping her into his arms and dashing into the bedroom with her, or as appealing as slipping the straps of her dress off her shoulders and watching it fall to the floor, or ---

No! Don’t think that way. He wanted to do this right. She wasn’t someone for him to fuck once or twice, and then move on to the next one. He wanted it to be so much more than that. He wanted to savor getting to know her. For the first time in his life, he wanted her to get to know him, the real him, the Max Evans no one else knew.

Looking around the room while he waited, his gaze fell on an arrangement of pictures on a sideboard. He walked over, seeing one of Liz and Michael, both of them smiling for the camera. He picked it up by the frame and studied it. Michael’s hair was long, just like back in their college days, and Liz looked so young, probably still in her teens. He wondered how old she was now. 22? 23? There were so many things he didn’t know about her yet.

Funny how Michael had never mentioned a sister, and even stranger that Liz said she grew up in New Mexico. Max was fairly certain Michael once told him he’d lived most of his life in upstate New York. He couldn’t help but smile, thinking how ironic it was that the girl of his dreams would turn out to be Michael’s sister.

Liz walked back into the living room wearing a pair of denim jeans and an oversized Columbia Law School sweatshirt. It looked old and well worn, and Max wondered if it was the same one he’d loaned Michael back in their second year of law school, the one he never got back.

“What?” Liz said, noticing the smile on Max’s face.

“Nothing,” he replied after a brief hesitation. He liked the idea that she was wearing his old sweatshirt. She looked beautiful earlier, in her red dress, with her hair piled high and falling in wispy strands around her elegant neck. In an old sweatshirt and jeans, she still looked just as beautiful. She’d let her hair down now, and it fell around her shoulders, long and silky.

“I’m almost ready,” she smiled, slipping on a pair of sneakers.

“I’ve got all the time in the world,” Max assured her.

* * * * *

“Here,” Max held out his hand. “Why don’t you let me take the leash?”

They crossed Central Park West, headed along the familiar paths and trails of Central Park, with Max sniffing the ground, wagging his tail as he pranced in front of them. As she transferred the leash to his hand, their fingers touched, and Max felt that spark shoot up his arm, that tingling excitement that she caused in him every time their skin touched. He wondered if she felt the same thing when he touched her.

Max was surprised by the pull on the leash as the dog strained forward, smelling the grass and the shrubs and the trees. The monster had to weigh at least a hundred pounds. Thank God there weren’t any cats or squirrels around for him to chase, because the image of Max chasing one, dragging him face down in the dirt behind him, wasn’t an appealing one.

“So, do you live around here?” Liz asked as they walked side by side. “I’ve seen you in the park before. You like to run here. At night.”

Max nodded, not telling her the reason he jogged here was so he could see her. “I live in the Dorilton, over on the corner of 71st and Broadway. It’s not too far. I’ve seen you before too, walking this man eating dog,” he laughed, tickled by the mortified look on her face.

“I swear, Max. I don’t know what came over him! He’s usually a big sweetheart. He’s never bitten anyone before.”

“Lucky me!” Max exclaimed sarcastically, but really meaning it.

“Max, I really feel awf-” Liz started to apologize but he cut her off with a touch of his fingertips to her lips.

“It’s okay. Really.”

“You’re not going to sue me?” Liz looked up at him worriedly.

Her question took him by surprise, but once he thought about it, it seemed an obvious assumption on her part. “No,” he shook his head. “I’m not going to sue you.”

“Thank God,” she sighed. “I thought sure you’d already hired a lawyer or something and I didn’t know how to tell Michael.”

“Well, if I wanted to sue you, I wouldn’t have to hire a lawyer,” he said with that lopsided grin of his. “I’d just represent myself.”

“Of course,” Liz concluded, remembering the conversation at the party with Tom Hastings. “You’re a lawyer. Is that how you know Michael? Do you work together?”

“Do we work together?” Max almost laughed out loud. “The more accurate term would be --- we work against each other. I’m a defense lawyer. Michael’s a prosecuting attorney. He tries to send ‘em to the big house, I try to get ‘em off scot free. We’ve butted heads on more than one occasion.”

“Oh,” Liz said, taking it all in.

“Michael and I have kind of a rivalry between us,” Max told her. Actually, it was more like a war, but he kept that to himself.

“Really?”

“A friendly competition,” Max added, thinking, friendly my ass. They hadn’t been friends for years.

* * * * *

The doors swooshed open and they exited the elevator, making their way down the corridor to Liz’s apartment. She was quiet, wondering if she should ask him to come in, to have a nightcap or a cup of coffee or something. She wasn’t good at this kind of thing. It’d been a long time since she wanted to open up, to let somebody in.

Max struggled with his inner demons. He desperately wanted to come in, but if he did, he was afraid that he wouldn’t want to leave. In the past, that would have been just what he was looking for, but with Liz, he wanted to take it nice and slow. He wanted to make each and every moment with her count. Special. Memories to build on.

They reached her door and she seemed to fumble in her pocket, trying to find her key. Max waited patiently with a smile on his face. She was nervous. He was too. Max the dog was yawning and ready for bed. Finally, she fished the key out of her pocket and inserted it into the lock. After she pushed the door open she turned around to face him.

“I had a really good time, Max,” Liz said, with her chin lowered and her eyes downcast.

“You did?” Max teased, “Isabel and all?”

“Yes,” a broad smile broke over her face and her eyes met his. “Even though she scared the hell out of me!”

His own smile was nervous as he said, “I had a really nice time, too. Maybe, if you’re not busy, we could do something on Friday . . .”

Or Thursday, or Monday, or tomorrow . . .

“I’d like that,” she nodded, dreading the thought of waiting until Friday to see him again.

They stood silently for a moment, and then Liz reached for the dog’s leash. Her fingers brushed over his, and fire rose up her arm from the contact. God! She couldn’t help thinking if she ever made love to him, she’d probably spontaneously combust! Though she doubted she’d ever get the chance.

“Well, goodnight then,” Liz stepped into her apartment, with her dog at her side, staring up at Max as she slowly closed the door.

Max watched it swinging closed and cried out, “Wait!”

“What?” she flung the door open and he hastened inside.

“I forgot my jacket!” He shrugged his shoulders at his forgetfulness and moved into the living room to retrieve it from the chair where he’d placed it earlier.

Liz closed the door and removed the leash from Max’s collar and he trotted off, a happy dog. Max returned from the living room, slipping his arms into the jacket of his tux. He stood awkwardly, not wanting to leave but knowing he had to.

“Well, goodnight Liz,” he said, and they both reached for the doorknob at the same time. Their hands touched and as their eyes locked together, he knew he had to kiss her. He reached for her, cupping her cheeks with his hands and pulling her face to his. His lips descended to hers, covering her lips with a passionate kiss, deep and full of wanting.

He kissed her hard, pulling at her lower lip, swiping his tongue over it, dipping into her mouth, nipping at her. She drove him crazy with desire and all he could think of was taking her back to her bed and showing her how much she meant to him. His hand roamed over her back, wanting to feel the bare skin there again, but knowing he shouldn’t. It was too soon. He didn’t want to do this wrong.

“Max,” Liz mumbled against his assault. God, how she wanted him! The few sexual encounters she’d had in the past had been awkward and clumsy, but there was something about Max that made her want to throw caution to the wind and just live in the moment. She kissed him back hard. The moan she heard in his throat when her tongue dipped into his mouth made her heart beat faster.

“Liz,” he said huskily, his words punctuated between the kisses he was planting on her lips. “I think . . . I probably . . . should go.”

“Are you . . . sure?” she asked breathlessly, devouring his lips between her own words.

“Hell no,” Max growled, “but I have to.” He kissed her again, sucking in her lower lip, trying to remain firm in his resolve.

“Why?” she asked throatily between kisses. “Why do you have to go so soon?”

“So I can come back in the morning, to pick you up and take you away.”

“Take me where?” Liz pulled back, surprised and intrigued.

He rested his forehead against hers and smiled, “It’s a surprise.” He looked into her questioning face and said, “Be ready at nine o’clock. I’ll be back to pick you up then.”

“But where, Max?” Liz asked, getting caught up in the excitement. “To go where?”

“You’ll find out tomorrow morning!” He kissed her hard once again. With a deep groan of protest, he tore his mouth away from hers and hurried out the door and into the hallway. “Nine o’clock. I’ll be back at nine o’clock!”

“I’ll be ready,” Liz sighed.

With a final look in her direction, Max turned to the elevators. As soon as his finger hit the down arrow, the doors slid open and he stepped inside. Just as the doors closed, he called out in an excited voice, “Nine o’clock!” and then he was gone.

Liz closed the apartment door and leaned back against it, feeling her pulse still hammering in her veins. Her lips still tingled from his much wanted assault on them, feeling awestruck by what had happened between them. Max had kissed her. Max had more than kissed her. Max wanted to see her again!

Oh God! She was so happy, which of course meant something horrible was going to happen.

A Walk in the Park
Part 7

Liz scurried around her bedroom with a towel wrapped around her body and another on her head, trying to decide what to wear. Max would be here soon, and she couldn’t make up her mind. He didn’t say if their date would be casual, like jeans casual, or dressy, like wearing heels dressy.

She stood with her hands on her hips, staring at the assortment of clothes on her bed, wondering what to choose?

Max watched her with his tail wagging happily. Did she want to play hide in the blankets? He jumped up, landing right in the middle of her bed, and then they played chase.

He hid under the coffee table until she stopped being mad.

* * * * *

Max watched the lighted floor numbers change as the elevator rose on the way to the 14th floor. He turned his wrist and glanced at his watch and smiled, right on time. He wondered if she would be ready, or if she was the type that was always running perpetually late? He felt a nervous flutter in his stomach when the elevator doors slid open and he stepped out, slowly making his way down the hallway.

As he neared the door, an uneasy note of apprehension grew inside him. Last night Liz mentioned Michael would be coming home from a business trip this afternoon, and Max wasn’t sure how he was going to approach him about wanting to date his sister. There’d been bad blood between them for so long, he knew Michael wouldn’t like it. No, Michael wasn’t going to like it at all.

They’d been friends once. Good friends. Thinking back on it now, Michael was probably the last close friend he’d really had. He had a ton of acquaintances and associates, but no one really close, not like the friendship he and Michael had back in college. He missed it.

There’d always been a competitive edge between him and Michael, each trying to outdo the other. When it came to academics it had been good for them both. It made them strive to excel. It put them both at the top of their class. But then Ashley came along and it turned personal. Michael was in love with her. Max was horny for her. A competition ensued.

Max won the heart of the girl, but he only wanted her body. Michael never forgave him for it.

Max paused outside the door to Michael’s apartment, the anticipation of seeing Liz again making his stomach flutter anew. He understood now why Michael despised him so much. At the time, he’d thought ‘What’s the big deal? It was only sex.’ But now he knew if anyone had used Liz the way he’d used Ashley, he’d want to kill the guy too. Strange how his outlook on things had changed so much over the last few days.

Pushing the memories aside, he lifted his hand to knock on the door.

* * * * *

Liz looked at her reflection in the mirror and smoothed her hands over her hips. She’d finally decided on a pair of khaki pants, brown loafers and a black, short sleeve cashmere sweater. It was the only cashmere she owned and she loved the feel of the soft material. Michael had given it to her on her last birthday, when she turned 23.

She heard a knock on the door, Max’s sudden bark, and her stomach flipped upside down. Oh God! He’s here! She took one final look in the mirror, gave herself a ‘you’re hopeless’ look, then raced out of the bedroom. She reached the front door, shooing Max away and telling him to hush, then paused, took a deep breath, and calmly opened the door.

There on the other side stood Max, with a smile on his gorgeous face --- wearing khaki pants, brown loafers, and a black polo shirt. It almost made her laugh out loud. The humor of it wasn’t lost on him either. His eyes swept over her and she held her hands out to her sides, posing, “I guess were twins today!”

“You look beautiful,” Max stepped into the apartment, “and nothing like my twin.”

He was of course referring to his sister. He felt something wet and cold against his hand and looked down to see Max sniffing his fingers. His tongue snaked out and licked him, and Max patted him affectionately on the head. So the devil dog could be an angel when he wanted to be.

“Are you ready?” he asked Liz.

Nodding, Liz grabbed her purse and bent down to pet Max. “You be a good boy, now,” she scratched him behind the ears. He wagged his tail furiously and tried to lick her cheek, or anything else he could reach. “Mary will come by later and give you a walk. Be good, and stay off my bed.”

With a final scratch behind the ears, Liz stood up and she and Max left the apartment.

* * * * *

They drove northbound out of Manhattan, making good time. Liz rubbed her hand along the soft leather of the seat, enjoying the ride, and said, “Porsche, huh?”

Max took his eyes off the road for a moment, looking at her with a broad smile on his face. “This is my baby,” he purred. “It was a gift from my father, when I graduated from law school.”

“Really?” she tried to keep her face neutral. She didn’t like to think about graduation. There were too many bad memories. “Your father is very generous.”

“Yeah,” Max nodded, but his smile faltered. He’d noticed the dark look that crossed her face a moment ago, the way the light went out of her eyes. She recovered quickly, but something he said had disturbed her, and he wondered what it was. Keeping his tone light, he said, “He was proud of the fact that I chose law, following in his footsteps.”

Max stole glances at Liz as he drove, headed north along the Hudson, with the city falling behind them. Music played softly on the radio, not loud enough to hinder conversation.

“Tell me about yourself,” he said, wanting to know everything about her. He wanted to reach over and touch her hand, to hold it, to lace his fingers between hers, but he didn’t want to act like a lovesick fool either. He squeezed the steering wheel harder, forcing himself to let her set the pace. There was a quality about her that seemed almost fragile, and he didn’t want to push her too hard, or too fast.

“What do you want to know?” she asked softly.

“Everything,” he answered, showing her that boyish grin of his. “Tell me about where you grew up, in Roswell. Tell me about your family.”

She looked down at her hands, folded in her lap, and at first Max didn’t think she was going to say anything. When she finally spoke, the tone of her voice told him the story he was about to hear wasn’t going to be a happy one.

“I was born in Roswell,” she darted a quick look at him and went back to inspecting her hands. “We lived in an apartment above a restaurant my parents owned. It was just the three of us and the restaurant took up most of my parents’ time. It was a cute little place,” she smiled, remembering the alien theme. Looking up over Max again, she said, “Well, you know what Roswell is famous for, so my dad called it The Crashdown, and we had alien stuff all over the place. We served food like Mercury Burgers and Saturn Rings and Galaxy Subs. When I was a teenager, I worked there a lot, as a waitress. I had to wear this silly alien uniform. It was cute, but at the time I hated it. It was so cheesy.”

“What about Michael?” Max asked, curious.

“I didn’t know Michael then.”

Max heard the melancholy tone in her voice, and if he hadn’t been driving, he would have had to take her in his arms to hold her, to try to take away whatever sorrow she was feeling.

She looked out the window for a moment, lost in thought, and then continued. “I was always kind of a loner, only child and all, and cursed with being one of the ‘smart ones’. I was the president of the science club and worked on the yearbook, geeky stuff like that. My claim to fame in high school was being asked to the Junior Prom by the captain of the football team.”

“That’s impressive,” Max grinned. Who wouldn’t want to ask a beauty like her?

“Yeah?” Liz wasn’t smiling. “I found out afterwards he’d done it on a bet, to see how long it would take to get into the pants of the school brainiac.”

The smile fled his face and Max gripped the steering wheel tighter, for the first time in his life feeling a sense of shame for how he’d treated some of the girls he’d known. He hadn’t been so different from that jerk she just described.

Liz let out a strained sigh with her eyes focused out the front window, but what she saw wasn’t the New York landscape flashing by.

“Senior year came around and I was selected Class Valedictorian. My parents were so excited. They were so proud of me. That same day we got a letter in the mail that said I’d been accepted at Harvard. It was my dad’s dream . . .”

Her voice trailed off and Max felt a twist in his gut, sensing something bad was coming.

Liz took a breath, forcing back the painful lump in her throat. Even after all this time, it was difficult to talk about it.

“When graduation arrived it was all a blur. The speech in front of the class, the hats tossed into the air, the cameras flashing afterward. We got in the car, headed home to celebrate, and got hit by a semi that crossed the centerline. My parents died instantly. All I got was a cut above my left eye, but the car was a mangled wreck and we were trapped under the truck for hours before they could cut me out.”

“Liz . . .” Max whispered and reached for her hand, wrapping his warm fingers around her cold ones.

“I’d just turned 18,” she looked at him with the saddest eyes he had ever seen.

“Liz, I’m so sorry . . .”

“That’s how I found out about Michael. I found adoption papers when I was going through my dad’s things. The responsibility of the restaurant fell to me and I had to settle all the financial aspects of my parents’ estate. When I was going through all the records, I found out my dad had fathered a child when he was 17, and he’d released parental rights. He never met his son. It took me nearly three years to track Michael down.” A smile broke over her face as she said, “Boy was he surprised when I showed up on his doorstep one day.”

“I bet he was,” Max squeezed her hand tighter. No wonder Michael never mentioned a sister. At the time, he didn’t know he had one.

“So,” Liz took a deep breath. “I went to Harvard, dropped out of Harvard, moved here to New York, and that’s my life story,” she finished, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

One look at her told him that wasn’t the whole story but he didn’t want to press her. Something else had happened to her, in college by the sound of it, causing her to leave.

He only hoped it wasn’t worse than what she’d already told him.

* * * * *

“So, are you going to tell me where we’re going?” Liz asked as they sped along the Hudson River on their way to his surprise destination. The further north they drove, the blue skies gave way to clouds, and raindrops began to pepper the windshield.

“We’re almost there,” Max pointed to an isolated house off in the far distance overlooking the river. He flipped on the windshield wipers as the rain intensified. “Damn,” he said in an irritated tone. “Where’d this rain come from? I thought it was supposed to be sunny all day.” He turned to Liz with an apologetic shrug. “We won’t have much of a picnic by the river if it keeps raining.”

“A picnic?” her face lit up. Their first date was a picnic by the river? He nodded his head, with his boyish smile making her melt inside.

Just then, he felt the car lurch and the back end swerved. Cursing under his breath, Max brought it back under control and pulled over to the side of the road. He looked over at Liz, seeing her scared face, one hand digging into the seat, the other braced against the dashboard.

“It’s okay,” he told her. “We’re okay.”

She nodded and he got out of the car to inspect the damage. Sure enough, when he reached the right rear, it was just as he suspected. Flat tire. He must have driven over something on the road. Liz got out of the passenger side of the car and stood beside him, with the rain coming down harder now.

“Do you have a spare?” she asked, blinking from the raindrops hitting her in the face.

“Yeah,” Max opened the trunk.

Liz watched him lift out the spare tire, noticing the way his muscles rippled under his shirt. The rain coated his arms, making his skin look slick and shiny, giving her a warm feeling in the pit of her stomach just watching him. He leaned the tire against the bumper and searched in the trunk, mumbling something she couldn’t quite hear.

“Damn!” he cursed, slamming the lid of the trunk down. “I don’t have a jack. I can’t change the damn tire!”

“What are we gonna do?” Liz asked with her arms wrapped around her chest. The rain was cold, and she hadn’t brought a jacket. Neither had Max.

“Come on,” Max grabbed her hand and began to pull her across the road. “Let’s get to the house before we get soaked!”

They raced down the road and up a dirt driveway that was rapidly turning into mud. Their feet sloshed through puddles, soaking through to their socks, and then the skies opened up in a deluge. Fat, cold raindrops poured onto them, saturating their hair and penetrating their clothing.

When they finally reached the house Liz huddled under the overhang of the porch while Max fished in his pocket to retrieve his keys. Liz stood behind him shaking with cold, soaked to the bone, while she watched Max search for the right one. On the third try, they heard the lock disengage and they rushed inside.

“Are you alright?” Max rubbed his hands up and down her wet arms. Her skin felt cold and she was trembling, and he even thought he could hear her teeth chattering.

“I’m fine,” she lied. As cold as she felt, it didn’t stop her from noticing the way the rainwater ran from his hair, down in little rivulets across his face, dripping from his nose and his chin. His shirt lay plastered to his body and his pants were a mud-splattered mess. Her own sweater was thoroughly soaked and her pants didn’t look any better than his.

“You don’t look fine,” he said, taking her in his arms, trying to warm her up. He ran his hand over her back, feeling how saturated her sweater was. “We have to get you dry. You’re gonna catch your death of cold. I’ll go get us some towels.”

She felt the loss of his body heat as soon as he released her. He hurried toward the back of the rustic looking cabin, disappearing through a doorway that Liz assumed to be a bedroom or a bath. He pulled his drenched shirt over his head as he went, making her stomach flutter at the sight of his exposed skin. As cold as she was, looking at his naked back she could feel a fire ignite deep inside her.

Trying to turn her thoughts elsewhere, she called out, “Is this your place?”

“Technically no,” she heard his muffled response. “It’s Isabel’s.”

“Isabel’s?” her voice rose fearfully and she looked around, half expecting the Amazon to jump out of the woodwork at any moment.

“Yes, Isabel’s,” he reappeared, smiling in the doorway. “But she turned the keys over to me years ago. Relax. She won’t suddenly show up. She doesn’t like it up here.”

“Oh. Good,” Liz relaxed, smiling shyly as he walked back to her. She tried to keep her eyes on his face, but the way he looked, with the towel draped around his naked shoulders, and his chest glistening and wet, she couldn’t help but stare. His pants rode low on his hips, and that fire she could feel burning below the surface intensified.

“I like it up here, though,” Max smiled as he neared. “It’s peaceful, and quiet.” As soon as the words were out of his mouth a boom of thunder echoed off in the distance. “Well, usually,” his grin widened. He stopped in front of her, holding out a towel. “You should probably take that wet sweater off. I can get you a dry shirt out of the dresser in the bedroom.”

“That’s okay,” Liz shook her head. “I have a camisole on underneath.”

Max froze when her hands reach for the hem of her sweater. He watched spellbound as she pulled it up over her stomach and then her breasts. Underneath the sweater, the silky camisole she wore was also wet. Soaked, in fact, with the material plastered to her skin. He couldn’t take his eyes off her body as she pulled her sweater off, even though he knew he should.

If the cloth had been dry, what she was wearing would have looked like any other tank top, modest and concealing, but wet was another story. The camisole molded to her skin, wet and clingy, with the rainwater turning the material transparent. The dark circles of her nipples were clearly visible, and the fact that they were standing erect wasn’t lost on him. She pulled the sweater off feeling her wet hair flop back against her cold skin, and then she saw his eyes, lingering where they shouldn’t be. She looked down and blushed furiously.

Her hands rose up to cover her breasts and Max broke out of his trance-like state. Her red cheeks reminded him that she wasn’t like all those other women he knew, making him feel like a voyeur praying on the innocent.

“Turn around,” he said huskily. She dropped her eyes and turned her back to him. He took the towel off his shoulders and draped it around her. “I’ll get you a dry shirt in a minute,” he said softly into her ear. She clasped the towel to her chest while he gathered her hair together. Using the second towel, he blotted the water from it, then rubbed the wet strands between the two ends of the towel, trying to help dry it.

“You have the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen,” Max said sincerely. It wasn’t a line.

“Thank you,” Liz said in a small voice.

She breathed deeply, trying to calm her racing heart. How could she tell him that she wasn’t blushing just from embarrassment? Heat rose in her cheeks, just as it was rising in the rest of her body. Heat caused by the way his eyes stared at her, the way his voice spoke in her ear.

Max turned her around, using the towel to blot away the moisture on her face. She wore very little make up, she didn’t need any, another thing that he liked about her and set her apart from the rest. Her face was downcast, making her look so young and innocent, but as her eyes rose up to meet his, his breath caught in his throat. The look he saw now wasn’t embarrassment, and was far from innocent or virginal.

The look she had in her eyes was hunger . . . for him.

“Max . . .” she lifted her hand and brushed her thumb over his bottom lip.

Max stared down at her, barely breathing. The feel of her hand on his face caused his pulse to quicken. The way her eyes stared at his lips drew him to her. He couldn’t resist. Slowly, they came together.

His lips closed over hers and he tossed aside the towel he’d been holding so he could cup her face between his hands. His kiss turned harder, more insistent, his fingers threading into her hair, crushing his mouth against hers, holding her so she couldn’t get away. His desire intensified as he felt her hands slip around his sides to his back, her fingers roaming over his wet skin as she hungrily kissed him back.

The towel he’d draped around her fell away, slipping to the floor unnoticed. His hands dropped from her hair, surrounding her now and crushing her to his bare chest. Her hard nipples tantalizingly pressed into his skin, causing a shiver to run through his body that had nothing to do with the rain.

He tore his lips away from hers and said huskily, staring into her dark eyes, “God Liz. What are you doing to me?”

“Trying to seduce you,” she said in a tiny voice, looking up at him innocently. “Am I doing it badly?”

He pulled away from her, staring at her, saying breathlessly, “It’s working like a charm.”

He looked down at her see-through top and felt a rush of heat surge through him. He wanted to touch her, to feel her, flesh to flesh, body to body, soul to soul.

His desire sharpened even more when her fingers curled under the hem of her top and she pulled the camisole up and over her head. Max watched spellbound as she deftly unfastened the hook of her bra and let it fall away from her body. Her hair was wet and wild, and Max’s first response was to brush the errant strands back from her face.

She stood before him, gloriously naked from the waist up, and what little resistance he had was shattered. His arms enveloped her, crushing her body to his, feeling the sharp points of her nipples searing his skin. There was so much heat emanating from their bodies, the windows in the room were soon clouded by steam.

“Liz . . .” Max mumbled against her lips between kisses.

Liz felt like she was floating in heaven. Here was a man she wanted so badly, and it was apparent he wanted her too. When had that ever happened? Once or twice in college when a roll in the hay was as much as she got? No, this sensation had never happened to her before. She was in love, for the first time in her life. Could she dare to hope that he could possibly feel the same?

Max broke away suddenly and held her at arms length. He stared into her eyes, awash in a sea of doubt. Shaking his head back and forth, he said, “Tell me to stop, Liz, if you’re not sure this is what you really want. Tell me you don’t want things to go any further than this and I’ll get you a dry change of clothes and when the weather clears we’ll head back to town like nothing ever happened. Tell me to stop now, or I’ll have to pick you up and take you back there into the bedroom and make love to you. If you don’t want that to happen, Liz, just tell me to stop.”

“No,” she said softly, shaking her head back and forth.

“No?” came his crestfallen reply, devastated by her answer. Did she really just say no?

“No,” she said more forcefully. “I won’t tell you to stop.” Bold, in a way she’d never been before, she added, “The last thing I want is for you to stop.”

Max swallowed hard, knowing there was no going back from this. She might want this now, but what about later, when she had a chance to think about it? Things were happening so fast.

“Are you sure?” he asked, feeling the world stop, waiting for her answer.

“Do you want me?” Liz asked, ignoring the voice of caution inside her head. It screamed at her to slow down, but she wasn’t listening.

“Yes,” Max answered fervently. “I can’t get you out of my head. I can’t stop wanting you.”

“And I don’t want you to,” Liz said, more calmly than she felt. “Max, I want to be with you.”

“Why, Liz? You don’t even know me.” Was he, Max Evans, trying to talk her out of it? What was the matter with him? He’d spent a lifetime taking women to bed without bothering to get to know them. Why should this time be any different?

Why? Because she was different.

“But I do know you,” she sighed, brushing her hand across his cheek. “I’ve felt drawn to you, since before we ever met.”

She could feel it too? That was how he felt, from that first night, when he was coming out of the deli and he saw her walk by. With just that one look, she’d changed him, in more ways than he could imagine.

His eyes roamed over her face, and saw no hesitance there. He wanted this, she wanted this, and the moment was now. His hand caressed her throat and then slowly dropped down to her shoulder, touching her soft skin, skin that didn’t feel cold anymore. His eyes followed the path of his hand as it wandered downward, feeling that surge of heat flow through his body as he cupped her supple breast. She fit comfortably in his hand, with her nipple pressing hard and firm into his palm. The small sigh he heard escape from her lips turned up the heat that was coursing through his body.

He could see the fire burning in her too, growing brighter as he touched her. His lips swooped down on hers, releasing his passion and letting it rage out of control. He’d wanted her for so long, and now he was going to have her. Their lips met in an extended kiss, their bodies crushed together, the hard muscles of his chest against the soft mounds of her breasts. Heat radiated from them as their hands roamed over hot skin, touching, stroking, learning the feel of the other.

His hand traveled down the curve of her back and when he touched the waistband of her pants, he had to take them off her. With his lips still attacking her mouth, his fingers found the button and released it, then pulled the zipper down. He roughly tugged her pants down her hips, feeling her trying to squirm out of them, all the while never breaking their heated kiss. When her pants fell to the floor his hands clutched at her ass, cupping her and crushing her against his rock hard crotch.

Her hips pressed hard against his hips, rubbing up against him making his kiss turn even more urgent, moving from her mouth to her throat to her upper chest, and then returning for a renewed attack on her mouth. His large hand cupped her ass cheek and then slipped between her legs. She moaned deep in her throat as his finger probed beneath the material of her panties and found her wet core. They both gasped as he touched her, both knowing it wasn’t rainwater that drenched her there.

A growl rumbled in his throat as Max stripped off her panties and lifted her, crushing her supple body against his. Her legs wrap around his waist as he moved them toward the bedroom, their lips locked together, with only his minds eye guiding their way. He reached between them to unfasten the button on his pants, feeling the wetness at her center against the back of his hand. He lowered his zipper and his pants sagged around his hips. He groaned with growing sexual excitement when he yanked down his boxers and his aroused cock touched her heated flesh.

Liz trembled with her own rising passion, her sexual drive now kicking into high gear. Her heat rubbed against his erect member as he carried her, stimulating her most intimate places against the head of his cock. A new kind of fire ignited deep in her belly, a fire she’d never felt before, growing in intensity as she rocked against him.

Max reached the bedroom and slammed the door closed with his foot. A feminine cry echoed off the walls, followed by a male voice filled with passion. The house reverberated with the sound, filled with expectation for what was going to happen next.

A Walk in the Park, Part 8

Post by Breathless »

Author: Debbi aka Breathless
Category: Max and Liz, AU
Rating: NC 17 for adult language/content

Author note: I’m not kidding when I say this part is NC 17. Based on where we left off in the last chapter, I think you probably know where this is heading. If you don’t like graphic sex, this might not be for you.

However, sex isn’t the only thing this part is about . . .

Maybe it is. Posted in two parts due to “length”. (LOL)

A Walk in the Park
Part 8

Maria watched the passengers pouring from the exit ramp, searching for Michael’s familiar face. Her foot tapped a staccato beat on the floor, with her impatience showing clearly in the set of her jaw. Why couldn’t that man move his ass? She was bouncing off the walls, but not just because she was excited to see him. No, he’d gone on business trips before and been out of town for longer than a few days. What she was excited to tell him didn’t have anything to do with them.

She couldn’t wait to tell Michael about Liz and the new man in her life!

Michael appeared finally, with his briefcase in his hand, spurring Maria to rush across the waiting area, throwing herself into his arms. He wrapped one arm tightly around her waist and chuckled, “I should go away more often!”

“You know what they say,” she smiled just before planting a big welcome home kiss on his lips. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

“So true,” he smiled down into her face. “So very, very true.” He kissed her back, letting her know how fond he had grown over the last few days, until he heard the muted whispers around them.

“Isn’t that-”

“Is that who I think it is?”

“Do you know who that is?”

Michael stole a look around him, noticing the stares and the pointing fingers. With a deep sigh he groaned, “I can’t take you anywhere!”

“What?” she asked, puzzled.

“Your audience has found you once again,” Michael said with a little smirk. He looked at something behind her and then gave his head a little jerk in that direction. She turned, noticing all the stares now. People were pointing at her and nodding their heads. One or two had slips of paper and pens in their hands, hoping for an autograph. Maria DeLuca had been recognized.

“Sorry Michael,” she apologized and looked at him questioningly.

He nodded and told her, “Go ahead. God forbid I keep you from your groupies.”

He watched her as she smiled and signed autographs and even posed for a picture. She was always generous with her fans and Michael didn’t mind sharing her. Well, he did mind a little bit, but if she was happy, he was happy.

Breaking away, Maria headed back to him and slipped her arm into his. “I have some exciting news,” she told him in a secretive tone.

“You gonna share it with me?” he asked as they headed to the baggage claim area to retrieve his suitcase.

“It’s about Liz,” Maria smiled like the cat that ate the canary.

“What about Liz?”

“It looks like she’s got herself a boyfriend!”

* * * * *

Streaks of lightning cut across the rain filled clouds like fireworks exploding across the heavens. Thunder followed seconds later, close enough to rattle the glass in the windowpanes, but the occupants of the house didn’t notice. At the moment, the outside world didn’t exist for them.

Heated and flushed, Liz looked up at Max, feeling the bed bounce beneath her. He’d just dropped her onto the mattress and now his fingers were tearing at his pants, pushing them down his thighs and kicking them out of the way. She lay on her back with her shoulders off the bed, leaning back on her elbows, her legs sensually parted with her knees slightly bent, one knee higher than the other, breathing heavily while she watched Max strip out of his clothes. When he finished he stood at the side of the bed, staring down at her in all his naked glory.

His eyes, dark with desire, stared at her with his lips slightly apart, his pounding pulse drowning out the thunder. His lungs heaved, more from excitement than exertion, seeing his dark haired beauty stretched out on the bed before him.

Her gaze swept over his body, taking in his long, elegant throat, blending into broad shoulders, down to his muscular chest. The filtered light streaming through the curtained window made his skin look golden, flawless, perfect. A sight to die for.

His nipples drew her attention, concentrated circles of rich brown standing erect on his finely toned chest. Her eyes dropped to the ridges of his stomach, chiseled lines any sculptor would beg to capture in stone, his navel barely a dimple in the expanse of his hard flat stomach. His narrow hips led down to his powerfully built thighs, a testament to his nights of running in the park. And there, nestled between those thighs, a set of tight balls hung below his male splendor, Italy standing tall and proud, at attention and ready for her. She couldn’t take her eyes off him.

Max stared down at Liz, seeing her face flushed with desire. Her dark hair draped around her shoulders, highlighting the stark paleness of her skin. Her small breasts looked perfectly natural, nothing fake or phony, sized just right to fit her body. Her nipples, compact little circles in a dark shade of rosy pink, jutted up from the center of each round breast. Her flat stomach led to voluptuous hips and shapely legs, slightly parted, giving him just a peek at what lay between.

He hadn’t expected this to happen, hadn’t planned it, but now there was no stopping it. Just the feel of her hot skin against his, her wet core rubbing along his raging cock, had nearly been his undoing, which was another thing that amazed him. Control was his middle name. Stamina was what he was known for. How could this little wisp of a woman turn him into mush like this?

“Max . . .” Liz said in a hushed tone, drawing his eyes up to her face. The fact that she was staring at him, her eyes glued to his lower half, made that fire inside him flame higher knowing what kind of reaction she was having to him. What she thought of him was the most important thing in the world right now.

He put his knee on the edge of the bed and leaned forward, touching her knees with his large hands, running them up the inside of her thighs, parting her legs as he leaned closer.

* * * * *

“Well you can’t say something like that and then just change the subject,” Michael objected. “What boyfriend? Who?”

“I don’t know much about him,” Maria beamed, “but they are sooooo cute together! She just met him and today they’re going on their first date!”

“Who is he? Where did she meet him? What’s he do?” Michael drilled Maria with questions. Liz was his little sister and he was protective of her. She’d been through a lot in her life, and by God, this guy better be a Prince because nothing less would be good enough.

“His name is Max and they met in the park when Liz was walking your dog on Thursday night.”

“Max?” Michael frowned. “Max who?”

“I don’t know,” Maria shrugged. “I didn’t get his last name.”

* * * * *

Max hovered above Liz, looking down into her face, focusing on her mouth as he descended to her. His lips covered hers, gently at first, turning heated as she pulled him down to her. Her tongue swept over his lips and then darted into his mouth before withdrawing, in and out, over his lips again and then darting back inside. His own tongue chased after hers, tasting her sweetness.

Her hands caressed the skin on his back as he stretched out over her, chests, stomachs, hips touching, his body settling between her thighs. He slipped one hand into her hair, cradling the back of her head while the other cupped her bottom, holding her as their bodies moved closer together. Her small hand snaked between them, wrapping her fingers around his condom sheathed cock, drawing him to her entrance, making him gasp with pleasure at the feel of her hand touching him. He glided easily along her slick folds, both of them anticipating the sweet moment when he would enter her and they would be joined.

The tip of his cock dipped inside her, slowly inching into her depths to give her time to adjust to his size. He pulled back and pushed forward again, sinking deeper this time, into the incredible warmth of her body. He groaned against her lips as she engulfed him, feeling her tightness all around him, wet and slick and welcoming. Her hips rose up to meet him with each stroke he made, her movements encouraging, no, demanding more.

“Liz,” he murmured as he drove deep inside her . . .

* * * * *

“Finally!” Michael groused when his suitcase tumbled onto the carousel. Why was his always the last one to come out of the chute?

“Is that everything?” Maria asked, watching him settle the suitcase on the floor. Michael nodded and they set off toward the parking garage.

“How could you not get this guy’s last name?” he asked for the second time. “Didn’t you think it might be important to know who the hell he was?”

“Michael,” Maria said patiently, “Liz is a big girl. She’s old enough to decide who she does and doesn’t want to see. I’m not her keeper. Neither are you. I know you want to protect her, but you have to let her live her own life.”

* * * * *

Their labored breaths mingled, their moans of pleasure mixed in the air, their heated bodies moved together, nearing completion now. Max breathed against her throat, his parted lips brushing across her soft skin, her scent overwhelming him, arousing all of his senses. His length filled her body, driving deep inside her, feeling her surround him, her pliant body rising up to meet him, offering him the world.

She sighed beneath him, an incomparable sound, like nothing he’d ever heard before. He’d fucked many women over the years, knew all the places that drove them wild, knew exactly where to touch, but no woman had ever touched him like this before. Not the way Liz touched him. She made him feel things he’d never thought possible, and the reason was plain to see. Unlike all those others, he wasn’t fucking Liz. What he was doing with Liz meant so much more than that.

He sensed she wasn’t very experienced, but as he moved inside her he realized he felt something with her he’d never had with all those others. Every emotion, every sensation, everything he felt coming from her was real. There was nothing fake about her, no pretense, no false affection, no false intentions. What she felt for him was real, and what he felt for her was real too.

The rising pitch of her sighs, the movements of her body beneath him told him she was close. Her fingers dug into his flesh, dimpling his butt, driving his desire to please her. He wanted nothing more than to feel her come apart in his arms. His wish was granted moments later when he felt her walls tighten around him and her hips began to undulate. He heard a moan escape from deep in her throat, then felt her fingers clawing at his back and then his butt while she bucked up against him. Her core, so tight when he entered her, now throbbed in a pulsating rhythm as she climaxed and he slammed into her hard, shuddering in ecstasy as he joined her.

His body exploded with sensation, his seed bursting from him in one blissful surge after another, riding the waves of their passion, coming inside her in the most intense orgasm he’d ever experienced. He heard her name echoing in the room all around him and soon realized it was his own voice crying out.

Sweet Jesus, had anything ever felt this good before?

“Max, oh . . . oh . . .” Liz moaned from the intensity of her orgasm. “Max, you . . .”

He buried his face against her throat as his body humped against her in the final waves of his orgasm. He entered her with one final climatic spasm, the last of his seed pumping from his organ, pressing his body deeply into hers, deeper than he’d ever been inside another woman.

“Liz,” he gasped against her throat. “What you do to me . . .”

“God Max,” Liz cried, panting hard on a sex induced high. “I’ve never . . . that was the first . . . God Max!”

“Wha-?” he said breathless, still riding the wave of their union.

“Max.” Liz rasped as his body settled against hers, feeling his weight pressing her down into the sheets. “God, Max. I never felt anything like that before.”

“What?” Max mumbled against her ear, breathing heavily from the exertion. Weakly, he lifted his face from her throat and looked down into her eyes. He’d just experienced the most mind-blowing sex he’d ever had in his life. Maybe because it wasn’t just sex.

His body tingled everywhere and through his addled mind he slowly realized what she was talking about. She’d been intimate before, but never brought to completion. He had just made her experience her first orgasm. That knowledge made him swell with pride.

“You never . . .? Until now?”

“No,” Liz admitted freely. “Never. No one has ever made me feel that way before.”

“You want me to make you feel it again?” Max smiled, feeling his cock twitch deep inside her.

“Yes,” Liz said breathlessly. “Yes.”

Thunder rumbled in the distance, one storm ending while another was just getting started.

* * * * *

“So what did this Max guy do?” Michael grumbled as they drove through the rain slick streets of Manhattan. “Just walk up to her in the middle of the park, at night, and start talking to her? Didn’t she listen to me when I told her about the wacko’s out there? For God’s sake, this isn’t Roswell! I told her not to talk to-”

“Well, that’s not exactly how it happened,” Maria fidgeted in the passenger seat.

“So exactly how did it happen?” Michael growled, in no mood for games.

Maria heard the tone and blurted out, “Your dog bit him on the ass!”

“My what did what?”

* * * * *

Liz swayed above him with her eyes closed and her long hair streaming down her back. Max looked up at her, watching her every move, feasting his eyes on her as she rode him. He’d been in this position many times before, but the view had never been as breathtaking as this.

“Yes . .. ” she moaned softly, leaning forward with her hands against his chest, rocking her body against him in the most intoxicating way. His hands clutched her hips, lifting her, then guiding her back down on him, burying himself in her depths. Her back arched and he let his hands rise up the contours of her body until he reached her breasts, cupping them and then kneading them, squeezing her nipples just a little to heighten her pleasure, all while she rode him with increasingly wild abandon.

“Max . . .” she tossed her head back. “Oh . . . that feels . . . oh . . . oh yes . . .”

His sex stretched her tight walls as he filled her, so ready to explode, but he forced himself to wait for her to go first. His eyes were drawn to where their bodies joined, watching as she rode him, taking his throbbing member into her depths and then lifting from him so she could start the journey over. His shaft glistened with her juices, slick with the evidence of her sexual awakening.

His hands caressed her body, gliding over her skin, from her breasts down to her stomach, then anchoring onto her hips again. Her moans rose in volume along with the tempo of her movements, her hips slamming down to meet his increasingly urgent thrusts. She leaned further forward, supporting her weight with her hands, breathing heavily from the exertion, the expression on her face so erotic it was almost his undoing.

Her breathing sharpened, almost gasping from the intensity of it, experiencing sensations like nothing she’d ever felt before. He pumped into her hard trying to match her quickening pace, knowing it would all be over soon. She was close, so close, only one more deep thrust –

“Max! Oh God Max!” she cried as she came again, her hips grinding against his sex, her walls constricting around his cock until he joined her in orgasmic bliss. A groan tore from his throat, drowning in a tidal wave of sensation, draining him until he thought he had nothing left. He was wrong.

* * * * *

“Well I’m sure he’s a lawyer because he was at that party last night. It was full of lawyers and politicians, you know the type, scum of the earth and all that,” she tried to make light of it. “You know, butt of all jokes.”

“Maria,” Michael looked at her sternly. He fumbled with his keys before inserting one into the lock, saying, “I don’t think this is fun-” and then he was attacked when he pushed open the door to his apartment and Max jumped on him, wagging his tail furiously. The weight of the big dog nearly knocked him back into the hallway and he petted him happily while trying to avoid doggie kisses.

“Whoa, boy,” Michael laughed. “Calm down. Yes, yes, I missed you too.” Max got in a good lick across the cheek and Michael pushed him down, wiping off dog drool with his sleeve. Max danced around his master wagging his tail a mile a minute, following him into the living room while Michael went to check his messages. Scanning the Caller ID, his hand suddenly froze and his facial features when rigid.

He slowly turned to Maria with a look of fury in his eyes, saying through clenched teeth, “You’ve gotta be fuckin’ shitting me!”

“What?” Maria said worriedly. “What’s the matter Michael?”

“This is the fucking matter!” he drilled his finger at the ID box. “Max Fucking Evans, that’s what. You said Liz is out with a lawyer named Max. The Caller ID shows the law firm of Evans, Evans, Petterson and Stone called here Friday. The second Evans in that prestigious firm is a dog by the name of Max Evans. A dog with a capital D. Very charming on the outside, and Royal Prick on the inside. He uses women without blinking an eye, and then he tosses them aside without a second thought. If he so much as touches Liz, I swear to God, I’ll kill him!”

“Michael, we don’t know that it’s him. There must be more than one lawyer in New York named Max.”

Michael stormed across the room and pulled open a drawer in a cabinet on the wall. He searched and searched until he found what he wanted. When he pulled the photograph out, Maria could see the conflicting emotions on his face as he looked at it. He brought it over to her and held it out, saying, “Is this who Liz is out with?”

Maria looked at a picture taken years ago, when Michael was still in his Messiah stage, wearing his hair like Jesus Christ. Next to him, both men with their arms draped across each other’s shoulders, was the smiling image of Max I-Never-Asked-What-His-Last-Name-Was-But-He-Seemed-Like-A-Really-Nice-Guy-To-Me Evans.

Maria looked up at Michael and slowly nodded.

“I’m gonna kill him,” Michael hissed. “This time, I’m gonna kill him.”

* * * * *

Max knelt on the bed like a choir boy singing the praises of the angel he was holding in his arms. His front pressed against her back without a breath of air between them. His face nuzzled into her hair, his lips kissed along her throat, his cock probed between her slightly parted legs. His arms wrapped around her, his left hand fondling her breast, while his right hand burned a trail down her stomach, through her trim patch of curls, toward his final destination. His fingers slipped between her wet lips.

Her moans grew louder while his fingers worked her swollen mound, causing her fingers to reach back and dig into his thighs. She moved with him, arching her butt back against him, trying to get his cock back inside her.

“Max, please,” she panted. He’d awakened a smoldering passion inside her that before today she didn’t even know existed.

“Lean forward,” Max breathed in her ear, kissing her skin, tugging at her earlobe with small little bites. “All the way.”

Liz bent over at the waist, pressing her cheek against the sheet with her hips still in the air. Max muscled her legs apart, pausing to take the time to roll a fresh condom into place before positioning himself at her weeping entrance. He pushed inside, watching the head of his cock disappear into the temple of her body. She moaned, the sound muffled by the sheets, but there was no mistaking the meaning.

“Does it feel good, Liz?” Max groaned as he pushed into her, slowly at first, and then faster, building in speed. A sheen of sweat coated his chest and his back and his legs and he could see it on her too, glistening on her skin. Kneeling behind her, he held her hips as their bodies flowed together, watching her swallow him to the hilt.

“Does it?”

“Yes,” she moaned again. “So good . . .”

He smiled, pleased beyond words that he could make her feel this way, until her hand reached back to cup his balls, and all other thought left his mind. God that felt good. She massaged him, toyed with him, almost making him shoot his wad. He pulled out of her, a small delaying tactic, which only made him want her all the more. With a loud groan he flipped her over, spreading her legs over his thighs and burying his cock inside her again.

She looked up at him now, with her cheeks flaming with passion, her nipples rising from her breasts in sharp, rigid peaks, her fingers biting into his thighs.

He grabbed two, three pillows to prop under her ass and then began pumping into her again, groaning with the exertion and loving every minute of it. The pillows kept her hips raised in the air, making it easy for him to remain kneeling so he could watch their movements, his cock sliding into her, her body taking him in, her fingers exploring her own heated skin, her face flushed with never before experienced sexual bliss.

Her moans rose in intensity and already he was in tune with her sexual responses. She was close. She would reach climax soon, which was good because he couldn’t wait much longer. It was only his willpower that kept him from coming and as her hips began to convulse and her moans tore from her throat, he gave in to a kind of bliss that he had never thought possible. Their joint orgasm washed over them, Max grinding into her as he let go, Liz crying out as the fire spread through her belly.

The spasms that shook her body sent her to new heights, and Max followed her there. His semen pumped from him nearly blinding him with pleasure and then he collapsed down onto her, as exhausted and sated as she was.

“God, Max,” she said softly, her fingers caressing the back of his head, threading through his damp hair.

“God Liz,” Max said at the same time, nuzzling her throat.

Holding her in his arms, Max finally knew what his life had always been missing. He’d had more lovers than he could remember, but he’d never been in love before. Until now. It made all the difference in the world.

* * * * *

“I can’t eat,” Michael growled, pushing his plate away. “Where the hell is she?”

He got up from the table and walked to the window, watching the lightning flash across the sky, worried about a fresh-faced kid who didn’t deserve the life that fate had given her. Three years ago, he didn’t even know she existed, and now he couldn’t imagine not having her around.

“Michael,” Maria said softly, trying to soothe him. She came up behind him, rubbing her hand over his back to try to ease his tension. “As much as you want to protect her, you have to let her live her life. You can’t smother her. All you can do is be there for her, in the good times and the bad. If Max turns out to be the dog you describe, then we’ll be here for her. Both of us. Remember Michael, she’s not alone, not anymore. She has us.”

Lightning flared across his face as Michael stared though the glass of the rain splattered window. The echoing thunder only added to his sense of gloom.

A Walk in the Park
Part 8 (con’t)

“C’mon,” Max grinned mischievously, pulling her from the bed where they’d spent all afternoon.

“What?” Liz giggled when he swept her into the air. His eyes traveled over her naked body, making her heat up all over again. Nothing like this had ever happened to her before. Not even close.

“We’re sweaty,” he set her on her feet. He took her hand and pulled her across the bedroom.

Max hurried into the bathroom heading straight to the shower stall. He turned on the water and as soon as the temperature felt right he pulled her inside, smiling at her as the shower spray soaked into their skin.

“Are you insinuating I’m smelly?” Liz poked a finger into his side.

“No,” he laughed and grabbed her hands to avoid being tickled. The truth was, the smell of her was intoxicating. Her scent was like perfume, an aphrodisiac he couldn’t resist. He’d never had such intensely satisfying sex in his entire life and he now knew it stemmed from the fact that he’d never made love before today.

Everything was different now – with her.

“Turn around,” he whispered into her ear.

The husky sound of his voice sent a fresh wave of desire through her. This was totally out of character for her, feeling so alive and carefree, something she’d never really felt before. She’d spent her whole life living in this world, but never really feeling alive. Until now. Until him.

Max grabbed a bar of soap and worked it into a rich lather. With her back pressed to his front he reached around her, starting at her throat and working his way down, cleansing her shoulders, taking his sweet time with her breasts, working her nipples to sharp points, smiling when she let out a soft moan. His soapy hands dropped down to her ribs, past the dimple of her navel, down through her curls, until his fingers slipped between her lower lips. He stroked her slowly and sensually while he kissed along her slick neck and shoulder, becoming more and more aroused by the moans emanating from her throat. He silently cursed himself for failing to have the foresight to bring a condom into the shower. He ached to be inside her again, which was amazing considering what they’d spent the afternoon doing.

“Max –” Liz sucked in a breath as his fingers brought her to climax, just as he had wanted to. He ignored the raging need in his own body, right now was all about pleasing her, but when she turned around to face him, the look in her eyes told him she wouldn’t leave him unfulfilled.

With soapy hands of her own she swept over the hard muscles of his chest, the taut ridges of his stomach, enjoying the feel of the muscles of his back and arms before dropping her hand down to surround his engorged cock. He was rock hard yet again and she fleetingly wondered how he had the stamina. He stood out, proud and ready, more man than she’d ever seen before.

Her hand dropped down to caress his balls making him turn even harder, if that was possible. She felt his cock twitching, and his legs trembling each time she teasingly touched him, thrilled by the sounds of his frustrated groans when she’d take her hand away. She’d never done this to a man before, and the power that it gave her felt amazing.

Max pinned her to the shower wall, wanting to be inside her, and going crazy knowing that he couldn’t. He nipped at her shoulders with his teeth, nibbled at her neck seductively while he pumped his cock against her hand. He wanted to lift her up and impale her, but he didn’t. He wanted to run naked through the house to retrieve his last condom, but he didn’t. Instead, he let her hand stroke his shaft to completion, feeling the tension inside him building until his body shook with another powerful orgasm.

The water washed away the evidence of their lovemaking, but it couldn’t wash away what he was feeling inside. She’d changed his life forever, and he was never going to be the same again.

* * * * *

“Michael, come to bed,” Maria said to his shadow, hunched in the chair by the window, just sitting there, staring into the dark.

“You don’t know what this guy is like,” Michael leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and his hands pushed back into his hair. “He’s a shark. A snake. He has a velvet tongue until he gets what he wants, and as soon as he does, then he doesn’t want it anymore. He’s gonna break her heart, Maria.”

Michael stood up and paced the room again, vowing to himself that Max Evans wasn’t going to get away with it this time. Not if he had anything to say about it.

* * * * *

“Are you warm enough?” Max nuzzled against her ear.

“Hmmm,” Liz murmured, basking in the flickering light of the fire, simmering in the heat generated by his body. “Absolutely.”

“It’s getting late,” he kissed her on the forehead. “I should call someone to come fix the car so we can go back.”

“Do we have to?” she said softly, more relaxed than she’d ever felt in her life. Max had done things, made her feel things she’d never dreamed possible, and now she was basking in the glow of it.

“We should, but, if you don’t want to . . .” Whatever she wanted, he wanted. Her wish was his command.

It’d been an amazing day, and now, here in the flickering glow of the firelight, wrapped in warm terrycloth robes, Max sat on the floor in the living room with his back leaning against the couch, sipping a glass of champagne. Tucked between his legs, Liz leaned back against him, feeling his fingers stroking through her hair and hearing the steady drone of his heart beating in his chest.

“Tired?” he asked, kissing the top of her head.

“Un uh,” she mumbled, denying it, but yawning anyway.

He offered her his glass and Liz took a sip of champagne, smiling dreamily as the bubbly liquid slid down her throat.

“Happy?” he asked, his voice a sensual caress next to her ear.

“Very,” she sighed. “You?”

He touched her chin, using his fingertips to gently turn her face up to look at him. He stared into her eyes intently, saying, “I’ve never been happier in my life.” He put the glass down and brushed his fingers across her face, needing to touch her, never wanting to let her go. “Being here with you, it’s like nothing I’ve ever felt before. I . . .”

‘I what?’ he questioned silently. ‘I love you?’ God yes, he loved her but they’d only just met. Was it too soon for a declaration like that? He’d never said those three words to anyone and he wanted to say them now so badly, but he didn’t want to scare her away either. What if she wasn’t ready to hear something like that?

“You what, Max?” she asked, half turning around to face him.

He looked into her dark eyes, her pale skin, her dark hair framed by the firelight, and with emotion from deep in his heart he said, “I think you’re beautiful.”

Her eyes dropped from his and even in the low light he could see the blush rise up in her cheeks. She dipped her head away from him and he cupped her chin turning her face back to him.

“No. Look at me.”

Her eyes lifted up to meet his and he could see her lack of confidence, her inability to see herself as he saw her. His love for her grew even more, and his tone of voice reflected that when he spoke.

“I’ve never known anyone like you before. You are beautiful, Liz. Not just on the outside, but inside too.” His hand slipped inside her robe and came to rest on the flesh just below her left breast. “Here. You’re beautiful here, Liz. Inside your heart.”

“Max . . .” she dropped her eyes again, not knowing how to respond to such words, but feeling the warmth of them spread throughout her. He made her feel special, for the first time in her life. He made her feel like she was important, for the first time in her life. He made her feel loved . . . for the first time in her life.

He pulled his hand from her robe and leaned forward, nuzzling her cheek with his, planting a loving kiss there, and then he closed his eyes and swallowed hard. There were things he needed to tell her, things that she should know. His stomach suddenly tightened at the prospect, not knowing where to start. What would she think of him after?

“Liz . . .” he spoke her name softly, brushing his lips across her cheek. “I . . . there’s things . . . about the past . . .”

She stilled in his arms, not even breathing for a moment. When she spoke, it was only a whisper. “No . . .”

He pulled back slightly but it wasn’t far enough to see the heartache on her face. He drew in a breath to speak, but she turned around to face him and stopped him with her fingertips against his lips.

“I don’t want to talk about the past,” she leaned forward and replaced her fingers with her lips. Someday she’d have to tell him about it, but not today. Not tonight. Tonight was too wonderful to relive painful memories.

Max sighed into her lips, a part of him grateful for the reprieve. Tomorrow. He could talk to Michael tomorrow, and then make everything right. Then the past wouldn’t matter anymore.

Their kiss deepened, and when she pulled back, the heartache that had clouded her eyes had given way to something else. Her hand dropped from his face to the belt that was tied around his waist.

She pulled the loose knot and the belt fell away. She slowly parted his robe and then sat back to take in the sight of his gloriously naked flesh. The firelight flickered and danced over his skin revealing the rise and fall of his chest, the ridges of his stomach that were so incredibly hard, the hips that fit so well between her legs, the thighs that had started this whole thing when they’d been so conveniently bitten by a dog.

His flaccid penis, that she now knew so intimately, filled the space between his legs, and was it just the flickering firelight that made it look like it twitched? He looked like a model in a magazine, leaning back against the couch, relaxed, and oozing sex. The thick white robe he wore contrasted nicely with the golden skin of his exposed body, glowing in the firelight. She placed her hand on his thigh, now certain she’d seen more than just a twitch.

He’d been surprised when she reached for the belt of his robe, and then even more so when she opened it and stared at him with such obvious desire. He felt the heat building inside him spurred on by that look in her eyes, feeling his cock stirring to life, even more surprised that he had anything left. He’d never come so many times in one day before and now, by the look in her eyes, they weren’t done yet.

Liz rose to her knees, pulling off her belt and peeling the robe from her shoulders, exposing her breasts, then her stomach, then the trim patch of curls between her legs. She slipped her arms from it and dropped it behind her. Her eyes feasted on his hardening cock, growing thick and rising to attention under her gaze. Her tongue darted out to wet her dry lips and she saw him twitch again.

He started to reach for her, to grab her and pull her to him, but he stopped and brought his hands back, letting her control the moment. He sucked in his breath as her small hands glided up the inside of his thighs, tantalizingly traveling over his sacs and then encircling his cock, slowly sliding along his length. Her fingers explored him, stroking him with languorous movements, watching his face to see where and how he liked to be touched.

He closed his eyes, leaning his head back on the seat of the couch, enjoying the sensations, when suddenly her hand dropped away and she leaned forward. He felt her hair tickle over his thighs and his head snapped up as her tongue touched him. The air rushed out of his lungs as her lips parted and she took him into her mouth. He fought to remain still, to keep his hips from thrusting as she explored him with her mouth. He wondered if she had ever done this before, her touch was hesitant and unsure, but that didn’t matter. Later, he could show her what he liked, what felt the best, but for now he reveled in what she was doing and how she was making him feel. They had a lifetime ahead of them to learn how to touch, and taste, and love each other.

He felt the familiar tightening in his sacs, the telltale tingling in his spine, and with a groan he grabbed her by the shoulders and lifted her off of him. He pulled her surprised face up to his and said huskily, “Your turn.”

Before she could respond, he leaned her backwards and she stretched out on the soft terrycloth robe. He hovered over her with his knees between her legs, just staring down into her eyes, her face, and then he kissed her, a soft and tender kiss. He lingered on her lips, and then moved to the sensitive skin behind her ear, and then down her chin to her throat. Her hands caressed his back as he moved lower, reaching the rise of her breast. His lips closed over her erect nipple, sucking on it, licking on it, nibbling on it, rolling his tongue over it while he listened to her moan.

He moved to the other side next, giving that nipple equal treatment, loving it with his lips and his teeth and his tongue. Her hands were in his hair now, holding his head close to her, arching her back up to him, loving the way he made her feel. His hand reached for something and he released his warm mouth from her nipple, replacing it with a cold splash of champagne.

“Ahhhh,” Liz exclaimed, shocked by the feel of the cold liquid on her hot skin and then his mouth was back, drinking it off her breast, licking it from her skin, sucking the bubbly liquid from her body. She exclaimed again when he splashed champagne on her right breast, chasing after every drop as it ran in rivulets from the peak of her nipple, down her side, to pool in the valley between her breasts. His tongue lapped at her nipple, her skin, sucking up every drop he could find, his tongue trailing down her side, around and underneath her breast, coming to the front and sucking at the pool in the middle of her chest.

He moved down her body and his tongue circled around her navel, enjoying the mewing sounds coming from deep in her throat. He tossed aside the empty champagne glass and went straight for the bottle, pouring champagne on her stomach and then drinking it from her, sucking it from where it pooled in her navel.

He kissed down her body, moving lower and lower, kissing a trail of fire along her skin, and then through her bush of fine curls. He spread her legs and stared down into her feminine core, the flower at the center of her body. He parted her outer lips and his tongue lapped at that flower, teasing her nub of nerves, using his expertise to bring her to the edge and then back off. His tongue glided down to her entrance, dipping inside her sweetness, stimulating her nerve endings until she was ready to scream. Then he licked his way back to her clit, latching on to it and sucking her.

Her hands went to the back of his head, holding him in place this time so he couldn’t leave her on the edge again. She felt the fire blazing inside as he lapped at her, flicking his tongue over her until she exploded against him. She pulled his hair as she came, bucking her hips up against his mouth and then she fell still.

Breathing heavily she sighed, “Max . . .”

At the sound of her sated sigh he smiled that lopsided grin of his. He inserted his tongue into her core again, feeling the way her muscles throbbed and twitched in the aftermath of her climax. He slowly began to build the fire in her again. He took his time to bring her to the brink once more and then he lifted the bottle and poured a stream of champagne directly onto her clit. He drank from her as she climaxed again, shuddering over and over, while he drank and drank, lapping up Dom Perignon and the essence of Liz, all at the same time.

The bottle dry, Max tossed it aside and he took a last lap at her before inching his way back up her body. He throbbed with need of his own now but he still took it slow, savoring every moment with her. Her arms circled around him, urging him upward and he paused to taste the sharp peaks of her breasts again. Her hands cupped his face and drew him up to her, needing to feel his lips on hers. They kissed softly at first, tenderly and then it built in intensity as Max let his need take over.

His cock rubbed between her parted legs, inching closer and closer to where he wanted to be. He slid through her wet folds, penetrating her slick heat, inching into her depths and then pulling back, sliding deeper and then back, gliding past her glistening walls and then back, sinking into her deeply and then back, burying his cock inside her and then back. With a groan torn from deep in his throat, he pulled out of her, searching through the pocket of his robe until he found his last remaining condom. He quickly tore the package open and rolled it into place.

Returning to Liz, he hovered above her, watching the way the firelight flickered over her face, giving her pale skin a warm glow. Her eyes sparkled and danced. He let himself believe the sparkle in her eyes was there because of him, put there because of the love she felt for him, a reflection of the love he felt for her. Their lips drew together in a slow yet passionate kiss and then he slid into her again, equally slow, taking his time to enjoy every sensation.

Their bodies moved in a timeless rhythm, lips to lips, chest to chest, male to female, Max stroking his length into her, Liz rising up to accept all that he offered. As he penetrated her depths, he broke through the walls of loneliness that had formed around her, isolating her for so long. Tears formed in her eyes as she finally let down her barriers, opening herself up to living, to loving, to letting him in. This man, this gentle man, with his expressive eyes, his boyish charm, his confidence and his strength, was drawing her into the world again in the gentlest of ways.

The firelight reflected the shadow of two lovers, dancing on the walls as they came together, both of them feeling a special connection being forged. If asked, neither one could explain it, but the feeling was there. Deep inside, a knowledge that each had found the one person who fulfilled what the other was missing.

Their slow lovemaking came to sweet fruition with the spasms that wracked their bodies bonding them as one. As Max emptied into her he cast aside his old life for a new one, a life where his needs now came second, where his desires were outweighed by another’s, where the most important person in the world was no longer himself. He wrapped his arms around his love in the afterglow of their lovemaking, spooning his body to hers as he settled beside her on the soft cushion of the robes.

Her fingers intertwined with his, watching the warm flames of the fire, while listening to the sounds of his breathing turn slow and even. Snuggling in his arms felt like heaven, with the length of his naked body pressing against her. She felt her eyes getting drowsy and then a thought floated at the edge of her mind, causing her to chuckle softly.

“What?” Max asked sleepily, nuzzling at her ear before lying his head back down.

“I just realized something,” she turned her head to look back at him. He opened his eyes and looked at her with veiled curiosity.

“I don’t even know your full name,” she said. A blush rose up in her cheeks that she’d just spent the day making love to a man and she didn’t even know his last name.

He could see the blush on her face and it endeared her to him even more. He smiled at her in that boyish way of his and said, “Evans. Maxwell Philip Evans, at your service.”

She blushed even harder and he kissed her on her nose, and her cheek, and then tenderly on her lips before laying his head down once more and closing his eyes.

She smiled, feeling secure in his arms as his breathing evened out, and then she heard him softly say, “I love you Liz Guerin.”

Her eyes flew open, amazed by those first three words, and then surprised by the last one. She turned to look at him with his name poised on her lips but she could see that he had already drifted into sleep.

“Max?” she whispered softly, but he didn’t stir. She watched his face for a minute, with joy in her heart that this man could love her, and then she said softly, “It’s Parker. My last name is Parker.”

Max stirred in his sleep with a smile touching the corners of his lips. She lay her head back down with a smile of contentment relaxing her features. She soon drifted off to sleep in the warmth of her lover’s arms and his words of love filling her dreams.

The night fell silent around them. The calm before the storm.

A Walk in the Park
Part 9

Liz slowly rose up from the depths of sleep, stretching languidly, taking in the sensations all around her. She had the most contented feeling, a warm cozy sense of fulfillment deep inside her, yet at the same time her body was sore and achy in places she’d never been sore and achy before. As she became more aware of her surroundings, her senses told her the bed she was lying in wasn’t her bed, the room she was in wasn’t her room, the male voice she heard humming in the background wasn’t her brother’s.

Opening her eyes, she looked at the sheets that surrounded her --- definitely not her sheets. Glancing up, she perused the room --- definitely not her room. Looking at the towel clad man humming in front of the closet --- definitely not her brother.

Sensing movement behind him, Max turned and smiled deeply when he saw she was awake.

“Good morning sleepyhead.”

“Morning,” she replied shyly as the events of yesterday began to flood her brain. She moved to sit up and then realized she was nude below the sheets. Completely nude, as in naked, as in Oh-My-God-We-Made-Love-How-Many-Times-Yesterday? naked.

“I brought you a cup of coffee,” he motioned toward a steaming cup sitting on the nightstand by the bed. “I didn’t know if you liked cream or sugar, so I brought both, just in case . . .”

Looking at her, he felt his heart swelling with love. When he woke during the night, after the fire burned out and the living room began to chill, he picked Liz up, her small body so light in his arms, and brought her to the bedroom, to sleep in the comfort of his bed. He’d held her close for the rest of the night, feeling her soft body curled into his, knowing that this could become habit forming, but what a sweet addiction.

His body had molded to hers, spooning against her as she slept, and he’d lain awake wondering how he would sleep tonight or tomorrow night or the next night if she wasn’t with him. It was crazy, he was crazy, but he couldn’t fight the truth. He needed her as much as he needed the air to breathe. Meeting her had changed his entire life and he would never be the same again.

“You brought me coffee?” she said in amazement, smelling the rich aroma in the air. She sat up and started to reach for the cup, but the sheet threatened to fall away from her breasts and she clutched it to her modestly.

Max noticed how she held the sheet close trying to cover herself, and he fleetingly worried that she regretted what had happened between them yesterday. His worries were chased away when he saw the way her eyes traveled over his towel-clad body. No, regret wasn’t what he saw in her eyes now.

Liz watched the way Max moved as he crossed the room and sat down on the edge of the bed next to her. Daylight, firelight, moonlight, it didn’t matter what kind of light she saw him in, he took her breath away. Sitting next to her, with his body so close to hers, she remembered every single thing he’d done to her yesterday, and how it’d made her feel. Now, looking up into his face, she found herself wanting to do all those things all over again, achy muscles be damned.

Max saw the look on her face and it nearly knocked the air from his lungs. Yesterday he’d seen that sparkle in her eyes, and it was still there, shimmering below the surface. He reached out his hand, stroking her arm gently, just needing to touch her. Feeling her skin, so warm and so soft, he couldn’t help the way he responded to her. His hand rose up her arm to her shoulder and then on to her throat where he let it linger before gently pulling her toward him. He leaned forward until his lips covered hers with a tender kiss to start the day.

“I put fresh towels in the bathroom for you,” he said huskily when their lips parted. “You probably want to wash that champagne residue off you.”

“I thought you got it all,” Liz purred, lifting her hand to feel the hard muscles of his chest. She kept surprising herself with her boldness around him, but there was just something about him that made her want to come out of her shell.

“Maybe I better check,” he murmured throatily. His lips went to her throat at the same time that his hand tugged on the sheet, pulling it down below her breasts. He kissed a trail down her skin, taking one of those rosy peaks into his mouth. He smiled at the sounds coming from her throat before moving to the other side, checking for champagne there too.

Her hand dropped down from his chest to his stomach, then lower, encountering the obvious bulge beneath the towel he was wearing. She brushed over it again, feeling the bulge harden even more. His hand covered hers and reluctantly pulled it away. With a final tug at her nipple he sat up and said huskily, “We better stop. No more raincoats.”

Liz looked at him, confused at the sudden change of subject, and looked toward the window asking, “Is it still raining?”

“No,” his eyes sparkled, trying not to laugh at her innocence. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Oh,” she looked at his crooked smile and then her eyes widened. OH! He was talking about condoms! No more condoms!

“Besides,” he said, rising from the bed, “I have to get back to the city. I’m due in court this morning, and it’s a long drive back.”

“What about the car?” she asked, watching him from the bed.

“I called Triple A. They should be here any minute to fix it.” Back at the closet now, he selected a charcoal gray suit and grabbed a pair of highly polished black shoes.

Liz watched him as he looked through his shirts and she pulled the covers aside, padding quietly over to join him. She pressed her naked body against his side and pointed at a burgundy shirt hanging in his closet.

“That one.”

“That one?” Max asked, smiling at the feel of her body against him. He let his eyes drift over her, lingering on her perky breasts and then dropping lower.

“Yes, that one,” Liz nodded, blushing at his perusal. “And this tie,” she said, taking a silver one with burgundy accents off the tie rack and handing it to him.”

“I should always have you dress me,” his smile turned lustful, “or undress me . . .”

His hand rose up her rib cage and cupped her breast while taking her lips in a sweet kiss. His thumb stroked over her nipple turning it hard and his cock reacted the same, rising up, ready for action.

“You better go take your shower,” he mumbled against her mouth, “before I lose all sense of control.”

Self-consciously, she hurried across to the bathroom to take her shower, with Max’s eyes glued to her every step of the way. Her long hair fell to the middle of her back and her hands clasped together covering her butt, like she was embarrassed for him to see her.

“Liz,” he called to her when she reached the doorway. She half turned to look at him, and he was struck by her absolute beauty. “I –” he squeaked and had to clear his throat before he could continue. “I’ll find something clean for you to wear and set it on the bed.”

She smiled her thanks and then disappeared into the bathroom, and Max had to lean against the closet door to support himself on his suddenly weak legs. The things she did to him just by the simplest look, or smile, or touch. Determined to get dressed and resist the urge to chase after her, he stripped off the towel and looked down at his cock in its state of semi-arousal.

“Down boy, down,” he said under his breath, but his cock wasn’t listening. It rose another notch. “No, I mean it.”

The sound of running water reached his ears and he heard Liz open the shower door. An image from yesterday filled his mind, of her hand sliding up and down his length, of his own hand nestled between her legs, and his cock sprang up to full attention. He looked down at it, and then at the shirt he was holding in his hand.

Cock --- shirt --- cock --- shirt ---- cock --- bathroom doorway --- shirt.

He tossed the shirt toward the bed and let his cock lead the way.

He opened the shower door and watched her for a minute while she rinsed the shampoo from her hair. Her head was tilted back with her eyes closed, letting the water pour over her. Her back arched, thrusting her breasts up in the air while her hands worked through the strands of her hair, trying to remove all the soap.

When her eyes blinked open, Max said, “Someone wants to see you.”

Startled, Liz arched her eyebrows, wondering what he was talking about, and then she saw his bad boy grin. Her eyes dropped down to his very aroused penis, standing tall and firm, which made a smile break over her face.

“For me?”

“Only for you,” he vowed, and stepped into the shower with her. Taking her into his arms he said, “Since I’m the one that spilled champagne on your delicious body, I should be the one to make sure there’s none left.”

“That seems . . . reasonable,” she sighed, feeling his incredibly hard cock pressing into her belly.

“So,” he began and then kissed her on the lips. “I’ll just . . .” he moved to kiss her neck, “. . . start here,” moving on to her chest. His lips covered her left nipple making her gasp out an aroused sigh. He turned her so her back was pressed up against the shower wall, with the water hitting them from the right side.

He sucked at her nipple, feeling it harden even more, and then he played with it with his tongue. “Ummm, that one seems clean.” He moved to the right one, and circled it with his tongue while his hand moved up the inside of her thigh, only stopping when he reached her apex. His fingers parted her feminine folds, stroking her before letting a finger slide to her center and slip into her depths.

He sucked on her nipple while his finger probed her and his thumb found its way to her clit. He worked his skillful magic and it wasn’t long before he felt the telltale signs of her impending orgasm. Her body tensed, right on the verge, and then he removed his hand and his mouth, teasing, “I see no evidence of residual champagne. Case closed.”

He moved away from her, with a grin on his face that he tried to hide. She grabbed his arm and cried, “I object!”

Choking back a laugh, Max said, “You what? You object!” He hadn’t expected her to say that.

“Yes, I object!” she insisted. “You didn’t check for champagne in all the appropriate places. A good defense attorney checks for evidence everywhere, not just the most obvious.”

“Oh,” Max teased. “So you think I should probe a little deeper?”

“I think you owe it to your client,” she smiled.

“Oh, and you being my client,” he moved close, slipping his hand between her legs again. “I should probe the evidence thoroughly,” he said huskily.

“Definitely,” Liz sighed, leaning back against the shower wall. She closed her eyes, feeling him kiss his way down her throat to her chest.

“Well, I checked here already,” he said, sucking on her nipple again and smiling at the sound she made in her throat. “Now I guess I better check a little lower.”

His tongue licked a trail down her stomach, past her navel and then he dropped to his knees so he could easily reach what he wanted to touch. He pushed her legs apart slightly and his tongue darted out to her clit, already aroused from his contact moments before. His tongue stroked her, licked her, flicked back and forth over that swollen bud while her hands fisted in his hair.

She was so aroused it didn’t take long for his tongue to work its magic. He lapped at her and then lifted her leg, draping it over his shoulder so that he could gain access to all of her. His tongue licked along her folds and when he reached her entrance he plunged inside her. He heard her moan loudly and he withdrew his tongue before plunging into her again. Toying with her, teasing her, he brought her to the brink and then pushed her over.

When her climax passed, she released her death grip hold on his head and he kissed his way back up her body. He reached her lips and their kiss became heated, with their tongues chasing each other and his cock throbbing against her belly. He felt her small hand surround him, dwarfed by the size of his engorged member as she guided him between her legs.

He slid along her slick folds and when he reached her entrance he dipped inside, just the head, just a little, and then he pulled back. She felt so good, so perfect, he pushed forward and dipped inside her again, just a little deeper and then slid out, knowing he shouldn’t be doing this but the feel of her silk was too overpowering to resist. He rocked his hips, dragging his cock back along her folds and then he surged forward, penetrating her deeper with a groan of intense pleasure escaping from his throat.

He pulled back and lifted her up, wrapping her legs around him as he plunged into her again, sinking into her sweet body, entering virgin territory with her now. Her warm body surrounded him, skin to skin, the only woman he’d ever touched like this. He pulled back and then drove into her again, burying his cock inside her, pounding her back against the shower wall as he slammed into her. He pulled back, almost all the way out, and then surged into her again, and then again, knowing he should stop, unable to stop.

He buried his face against her throat, listening to the sounds that emanated there, her moans driving him to a near frenzy. He felt her arms around his shoulders now, her hands threading through the wet hair on the back of his head with her legs wrapped around his hips. The muscles in his butt clenched, drilling his cock into her as deep as he could go, then pulling that magnificent length free before driving into her again.

With one arm wrapped around her back and the other holding her ass his thrusts began to shorten and intensify, the long deep strokes replaced by quick jabs with his body grinding against hers. Her moans intensified as his cock filled her intimate spaces and the fire in her belly began to flame out of control. He felt her body tensing, her inner walls constricting, her moans rising to a peak, and he impaled her, driving her into another orgasm.

Her walls tightened and throbbed around him making him pull out of her with a strangled cry. He jerked his hand away from her ass and grabbed a hold of his slick cock, pumping two quick times to finish himself off. He gasped as he came, spurting against her clit and her folds and her belly. His body twitched and trembled as he crushed her to him, with the last of his seed pumping free.

He removed his hand from around his cock and wrapped his arm around her again, holding her close to him as they both came down from their sexual high. They clung together, holding each other tightly, with their hearts beating rapidly and their breathing sounding labored and strained.

“I shouldn’t have done that,” he breathed heavily against her ear. He’d never had unprotected sex with anyone before. Never. He was too careful for that, but she’d felt so good he couldn’t stop.

“I know,” she nodded, with her face against his shoulder.

“We can’t do that again,” he panted. “Not without . . .”

“. . . a raincoat,” she finished and looked up at him with a twinkle sparkling in her eyes.

“Right,” he smiled, still breathing heavily. He was so crazy in love with her, she made him do crazy things. Trying to tear his mind back to reality but unable to tear his lips from hers, he said between kisses, “We really . . . need to get back . . . to the city . . . before I’m late . . . for Court.”

“Let’s get . . . washed up then.” She tore her mouth from his and reached for the soap. He watched her hands create a rich lather.

He laughed when her soapy fingers closed around his semi-rigid length, and he said, “I don’t think we’re ever leaving this room.”

Stepping from the shower, Max grabbed a towel and vigorously rubbed it through his hair. Liz stepped out behind him and wrapped one around her head to soak up the water from her hair and dried herself with another. She watched Max as he toweled off, rubbing it over his skin, along his arms and shoulders and back, and then over his chest and down his stomach and thighs. His cock hung limply now, dangling between his legs, and as sexually sated as she was, she couldn’t help looking at him. He walked over to the sink and used his towel to wipe the fog from the mirror. When it was clear enough to see his reflection he ran a comb through his damp hair. It curled around the nape of his neck and he brushed his hair back from his forehead, but she knew once it dried his bangs would fall forward once again.

Liz let her gaze fall to the back of his legs, checking the injuries on his thighs. The bruises were starting to fade, turning from black and blue to yellow and green. She wrapped her towel around her body and walked to him, putting her hand on his hip as she knelt down behind him.

“Let me just check these . . .” she said, falling into medical mode. She poked and prodded while Max watched her over his shoulder and for once he didn’t get a raging boner. With the workout it’d gotten yesterday and this morning, it wasn’t any wonder. His body was humming with happiness and he’d never been so sexually satisfied in his life. Looking up at him she asked, “Still tender?”

“No, not too bad,” he answered. “It feels a lot better today.”

Everything feels a lot better today he smiled inwardly. Wonderful. Fantastic. He felt . . . he felt . . . he felt on top of the world. Nothing in his life had ever felt this right before.

Liz rose to her feet, moving her hand up over his hip to his back, and said, “Everything is healing nicely. A few more days and the bruises will be gone and the bites healed.”

“Good,” he said, turning around and encompassing her in his arms. After a lingering kiss, he asked, “Will it take you long to get ready? We really have to get back to the city.”

“Not long,” she answered and he gave her a quick kiss before heading for the door. She smiled a curious smile as he walked away, thinking she’d heard him mumble something about ‘Down boy’ as he left the room, wondering what he meant.

With her hair dry and feeling clean and fresh, Liz turned toward the bedroom, with the towel wrapped securely around her body. She walked over to the bed and there, just as he said he would, Max had left her a change of clothes. She picked up the sweatshirt, athletic gray with the seal of Columbia University emblazoned on the front. She lifted it to her face, smelling deeply. His scent permeated the sweatshirt and she eagerly dropped her towel and pulled it over her head. It was huge on her, the sleeves hanging past her fingertips, but she just bunched them up around her elbows. The hem fell well below her bottom and she could picture herself walking around the house just like this, wearing nothing but his sweatshirt, waiting for him to come home from a long day at the office. Her cheeks flamed red at the thought. ‘Get real Parker’, she scolded herself. Just enjoy the moment, and don’t think about tomorrow.

She picked up the black stretch pants he’d laid out and slipped them on, noting how loose they fit. She wondered if they might have once belonged to Isabel. Looking at herself in the mirror, she shrugged, feeling hopelessly plain, and then she turned on her heel and left the bedroom searching for Max.

She found him standing in the small kitchen sipping a cup of steaming coffee and her stomach flipped at the sight. His suit looked tailor made, fitting him perfectly. The burgundy color of his shirt complemented his skin tone and contrasted nicely with the charcoal gray of his suit. His hair was dry now, and it fell softly over his forehead, giving him that boyish but oh so sexy look.

He looked up as she entered the room and she said, “I’m ready.”

When Max saw her he almost dropped his coffee cup. Standing there, wearing his sweatshirt and a pair of baggy leggings, he felt his blood begin to boil again. It was something about her wearing his sweatshirt, like it was indicative of her belonging to him, that made him want to sweep her into his arms and kiss her all over again. The sweatshirt was huge on her, just as he’d known it would be, but it fit her perfectly too. It draped her body like an old friend, looking comfortable and relaxed, and that was reflected on her face. Standing there she looked so young and fresh and . . .

So breathtakingly beautiful.

“Did they come and fix the car?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he answered and took a final sip of his coffee before rinsing the cup and setting it in the sink. “We should go. I put all our dirty things in the bag,” he pointed at a paper sack on the table, “and I cleaned all the mud off your shoes. Now if we can just get to the car without stepping in any more mud puddles, we should be set.”

“How often do you come up here?” Liz asked as she slipped her shoes on and lifted the bag off the table.

“Not too often,” he smiled. Not since he laid eyes on her.

Max led her out of the kitchen and across the living room to the front door, pausing there to give the room a fond look. His mind flooded with memories from last night, of making love to her in front of the fireplace, of falling asleep with her in his arms.

He felt it then and he knew it now; his life was never going to be the same. A chance encounter during a walk in the park had changed his life forever and he was happier than he could have ever imagined.
