Just so everyone knows, I sent a message to the mods, saying to wipe the feedback posts on the first three pages. Apparently space is getting tight for them, and every little bit is needed. If anyone wants copies of the comments made, I've saved them as text files, so just let me know.
Okay, lets see the curve ball...

Chapter Eleven.
Isabel and Nathan reached the clearing in a couple of minutes and made themselves
comfortable leaning against an old log, staring up at the stars. They made small talk for
a while, until Nathan decided to cut to the heart of the matter.
“So what’s on your mind?”
Isabel straightened up and paused for a moment as she collected her thoughts.
“An explanation, mostly. I need you to promise you won’t interrupt, just listen to me
and hear me out before you say anything.”
“Okay. Just take your time.”
Isabel nodded and took a deep breath, then proceeded to tell him. About Alex. About
what he had meant to her, and how much she regretted not telling him. About how he
had died in a car crash, and how a part of her had died with him. About the dreams
she had been having about him, and how much Nathan reminded her of him. Tears
threatened on more than one occasion, and when she was done, she couldn’t remember
ever feeling so emotionally drained before.
“So are you saying that what we have is just you trying to relive the past?” Nathan said,
the pain etched on his face.
“No, of course not! I knew that last week - I haven’t heard from you since Christmas day,
and I realized that it was you that I was missing, not Alex. It’s just that you remind me of
him so much it’s had me so confused, and with the dreams I’ve been having...” Isabel
rolled onto her knees so she was facing him, took his hands and looked into his eyes.
“Nathan, please believe me - what we have is real. I just needed to tell you about this,
because I wanted you to be able to understand what’s going on.”
He bowed his head for a moment with his eyes closed, and when he opened them he had a settled expression on his face.
“Well, I guess there’s only one thing to do then.”
Isabel feared the worst, and her voice trembled as she spoke. “And what’s the one thing?”
Nathan turned his head, his grin firmly in place. “I guess we’ll have to work on finding
you something new to be dreaming about.”
Isabel blinked once, twice, as understanding broke through the confusion like the sun after a fierce storm. Nathan reached out and pulled her head against his chest, and she melted as he wrapped his arms around her.
“Anytime, for anything you want me for. All you have to do is say the word.” he whispered in her ear.
“But what about...”
“Anytime, for anything. Just say the word.” He repeated in a tone that made it clear no
questions needed asking. They laid there for a while in each others arms, not a word spoken or needing to be said, and had both started to doze, when a voice snapped them back to full wakefulness.
“Well, well, well, isn’t this a pretty picture?”
Nathan scowled at their observer. “Get lost, kid.”
“You know, Vilandra, you should really learn to keep your pets on a tighter leash. We all
know what happened to the last one that got loose.”
“I told you once before, my name is Isabel Evans.”
Nicholas smirked at the pair as Nathan rose to his feet. “You mean you still haven’t accepted the truth of your situation after all this time? That is truly disappointing.”
Nathan stretched to his full six-foot-five-inch frame and stepped forward. “I’ll show you
disappointing, you little...”
“Nathan, don’t!”
He turned, confused. “Relax, Is, I won’t hurt him.... much. “
As soon as the words left his mouth, he knew he was in trouble. From the surrounding bush stepped six, eight, ten others, forming a semi circle with Nicholas at the center position. Nathan reached his arms out to the sides to protect Isabel and whispered quietly to her.
“When I say go, head for the track and get back to the others.”
“Nathan, you don’t...”
“Don’t argue the point!” He took one last look over his shoulder at her standing there, then set himself, and lined up his target. “GO!” He yelled, exploding into motion with a crushing tackle and driving his shoulder into the stomach of the Skin he had his eye on. As soon as Isabel turned, however, Nicholas was already raising his arm, with a flash coming from the device he had in his hand, knocking her to the ground.
“ISABEL!” Nathan screamed, and tried to get away from the two holding him back. Breaking free, he surged forward, but Nicholas was waiting, and a second bolt from his weapon knocked Nathan to the ground against a log, gashing his ribs. Nicholas tucked it back into his belt and pointed to two of his people.
“Get the female. Let’s go.”
One of them pointed towards Nathan, still conscious but fading fast. “What about him?”
“He’s nothing. Leave him there to die.”
As his people collected Isabel and started to leave, Nicholas walked over to Nathan and looked down at him lying on the ground, and smirked.
“You were warned to stay out of it. You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself involved in with these people.”
Nathan looked up at him, defiance blazing in his eyes despite the pain.
“Neither do you.”
Nicholas turned and left, following his people as they vanished into the fog starting to rise as dawn approached. Nathan summoned what strength he had and started dragging himself towards his bag, still on the ground where he had left it, praying that he could be strong enough to do what he needed to before the pain rendered him senseless...
Max stirred from his position by the fire. What was it he had heard? Sitting where he
was, the fire kept him from seeing much, and he was beginning to think his ears were
playing tricks on him, when Michael stepped up next to him, and the girls crawled out of
their tent rubbing their faces.
“So you heard it to then?”
Michael nodded. “Something’s going on, Max. I don’t know what, but I do know I don’t
like it.”
“Max, look!”
They turned at the sound of Liz’s voice, and saw a faint pink glow filtering through the
bushes. Max knew in the pit of his stomach what it meant.
“They’re in trouble. Come on!”
The four of them made a mad dash along the trail Max led them to, but when they arrived, they could tell it was too late.
All they found was Nathan lying on the ground, blood oozing from his ribs. Of Isabel or
any others, there was no sign. Michael was beside himself, and looking for a target to
lash out at.
“I told you he couldn’t be trusted! Now do you believe me, now they have your sister?!
Now we do this my way, and I’m gonna get answers.”
He turned towards Nathan, only to find Liz barring him from getting closer.
“Get out of my way, Liz. They took one of ours, and I’m going to return the favor, in
pieces, if I have to, to get her back.”
“Michael, look at him. Do you really think they would leave Nathan there in the shape
he’s in, if he was working for them?”
“So how do we know it isn’t another trick to get us to trust him more?”
“We don’t.” Max replied, from where he was standing. He brought his head up, and fixed
them with a steely gaze. “But we soon will. Michael, I want you to get Kyle and his dad
here, soon as possible. It’s time to finish this once and for all.”
Michael stepped to one side as Max approached and pulled his phone out. Liz looked at
Max, worried by the look he had on his face.
“Max, what are you going to do?” She watched as he slipped his gloves off, and flexed
his fingers. “Max, you promised me that at the end of this, I would still have my family...”
“I’m well aware of my promises, Liz.” He said, a cold edge in his voice. “Like the promise I made to look after Isabel and Michael, and make sure nothing happened to them. I’m just making sure all my promises get kept.”
With that, he reached out and placed his hand over the wound in Nathan’s ribs. A sudden
convulsion ran through Max, as he flashed through Nathan’s memories, looking for the
one clue he would need to guide him to his sister. As the healing completed, his
memories got closer to their time and place, right up to his last conversation with Isabel,
and the confrontation that followed, and the shock of it all rocked Max back on his heels
as he finally realized...
“It’s... it’s true.” He looked up, with tears beginning to form in his eyes. “Oh, God.... Liz,
I’m so sorry. I just didn’t think... “
“What do you mean?” Liz dropped to her knees to support Nathan’s head as he started to
stir. “What are you talking about?”
Michael came up behind Max. “Valenti and Kyle are on their way - they’ll be here in a couple of minutes.” He looked down at Nathan, with a dangerous gleam in his eye. “I like it, Maxwell. You bring him back so I can push him to the edge again. It won’t take long to get answers.”
“It’s going to take longer than you think, Michael.” Max replied. still kneeling on the
ground, rocking back and forth. He looked up with shock on his face.
“Nathan was telling us the truth right from day one. He has only ever been what he told
us he was. He didn’t know anything about us, or Alex.” Max shuddered violently. “Or
where they may have taken Isabel.”
Nathan rolled to one side, his body heaved by a racking cough as he tried to recover from
what had happened to him. As he straightened, he fixed his stare on Max’s face, with a
mix of amazement and horror running across his face.
“Just who - or what - the hell are you people?”
Liz took his hands, and tried talking. “Nathan, just stay calm...”
“Calm? I get shot by a kid using some sort of gun from Star Trek, split my ribs open,
and your boyfriend fixes the damage by touching me, and you expect me to stay calm??
Right now, I figure I’m entitled to be going off my nut a little, don’t you?”
“Trying to win friends and influence people again, eh Evans?” Kyle said, as he and his
father emerged from the gap in the woods. The smirk on his face died quickly as he looked at Nathan standing to his feet.
“I thought you said you had other plans, Valenti.” Nathan looked away in disgust. “Look,
I don’t care what you think of me, or why I was apparently set up for something, but now
I’m up to my neck in things, and I damn well deserve some sort of explanation.”
Max looked at Liz, who nodded, then he turned to Michael, who simply shrugged.
“Your decision, fearless leader.”
He looked at Nathan standing in front of him and sighed.
“You had better sit down for this one. It’s going to take a bit of time.”

Chapter Twelve.
“So you’re trying to tell me that this is all because of some war between your planets some seventy-odd years ago, and you guys were all reincarnated...”
“Cloned.”
“Whatever.” Nathan shook his head, an incredulous expression on his face, and he turned to look at Liz. “And you bought into this?”
“It’s hard to argue with the facts, Nate. How else do you explain what Max did to your
injuries?”
Michael stepped forward impatiently. “Look, this trip down memory lane is fascinating, but it doesn’t get us any closer to getting Isabel back, does it?” He turned to face Max. “What are we going to do about it?”
Max held his gaze for a moment, but the accusation in it was too strong for him to deny.
“I... I don’t know.”
Nathan shook his head. “No wonder you lot lost your war the last time.”
“Do you have any better ideas? Because if you don’t, why don’t you just...”
Nathan spitted him with his stare. “Actually, yeah, I do. Are you going to listen to what I say, or stand there ranting all day?”
A silence descended over the group, and those who were standing took a seat, as Nathan took a deep breath and marshalled his thoughts. After a moment’s silence, he nodded, and looked up.
“Okay, first things first. Resources. Mr. Valenti, are you carrying a weapon?”
He looked abashed, but nodded. “Yeah, I have my service pistol on me. And my name’s Jim.”
Nathan smiled. “Jim. Okay, here’s what we do. Kyle, you take Liz and Maria back to town in the Jetta. Don’t even try to argue the point.” He said, as Liz started to speak. “We’ll have enough to worry about without you girls getting caught in the crossfire.” He looked at each face in turn. “The rest of us will follow the kidnappers back to their hideout, get Isabel back, and get out of there - hard and fast, and no niceties.”
Michael snorted. “Who said anything about you coming with us to get her back?”
“I did. In case I missed something, you guys didn’t say anything about being psychic, so at the moment, I’m the best chance you have of finding her. Part of the studies I did on animals included being able to track them in the wild, and my friends and I got bored with that, so we’d go out for weekends tracking each other.” A shrug. “I learned to get pretty good at it.” He glanced down at his watch, and stood to his feet. “We have ten minutes, then I go with or without you. Pack it up and get moving.”
As the others started moving around behind him, Nathan headed to the back of his van, opening the door and withdrawing his rifle case. He was packing the extras he thought he would need when he heard footsteps behind him.
“You can’t be serious.”
He looked at Liz, staring at him aghast, but continued to pack his kit.
“Serious as a heart attack. Just like they were. Which is one more reason for me to get you guys out of here before things get started.”
“Nathan, think about what you’re saying here. You’re talking about using weapons on these people...”
“Which is exactly what they did to us!” He snarled, with a fierce set to his face. “Liz, you don’t understand. I made a promise to Isabel - I said if she needed me for anything, at anytime, I would be there. Well, now she needs me more than ever, and I’m going to go get her back.” He picked up the rifle by the strap and strung it over his shoulder, running at an angle down his back. “And if they’re still holding her when I get there, I’m going to enjoy making them let go.”
He shut and locked the van, and threw a satchel over his shoulder, stepping around Liz and walking to the head of the path leading to the clearing where they had been attacked.
“Let’s do this!”
Michael turned to Maria, and she collapsed into his arms as he hugged her tight and ran his fingers through her hair.
“I’ll be back.”
“You better be, Space boy.”
Isabel started to slowly come around, the shadows around her moving against a bright but
blurry background. She could hear the murmur of voices, but not what was being said, and waited until they had fallen silent for a few minutes before trying to get on her feet
and ascertain where she was. Her attempt was met with a blinding flash of pain across
her eyes, like a migraine headache, and she collapsed back onto the bench she had been
laying on, groaning, with her hands in front of her face. A voice came from above and
behind her that sounded vaguely familiar.
“It’s a side effect of the inhibitor they used on you. Lay still until it passes and when you
do start to move, do it slowly.”
As the spinning sensation passed, Isabel dropped her hands, looking up at the lights
directly above her bench. She rolled to her side, dropping her feet to the floor and easing
to a sitting position, finding the pain now reduced to a dull ache. She lifted her head and
looked in the direction the voice came from, but could see nothing but inky blackness, and
dropped her gaze back to her feet.
“Thanks for the tip.”
A pair of feet appeared at the edge of her vision.
It’s been a long time, Princess.”
As she looked up, her heart leapt to her throat and her stomach fell away. She realized just
where she knew that voice from - it was the same one that had sung her to sleep on
occasion, and now, in a dream come true had come back to comfort her again. She rose to
her feet and raised a trembling hand to his face, scared to touch him in case he should
disappear as he did in so many dreams she had had before, but wanting more than anything
to feel her skin on his just one more time.
“..... is it really you?”
He smiled indulgently. “You, of all people, should know...”
The rest of his words were lost as Isabel threw her arms around him, kissing him with a
passionate fury she could not deny - and in that moment, her whole world shattered. A
multitude of visions flashed through her mind as she was connected. Visions of pain, of
blood, of wives losing husbands, and parents losing their children, of weeping innocents
that had no hope left - and over it all, a mocking laughter and a maniacal grin on the same
face that was in front of her now, being worn as a mask. The person in front of her had the
face of Alex Whitman, but could never have his uniquely precious soul, and as Isabel
stepped back in muted horror, the name came to her unbidden, from a long-lost fragment
of memory from her former life.
“Kivar.”
He bowed his head mockingly, and Isabel could see the coldness in his gaze that made her shiver.
“As I was saying, you should know better than to judge by appearances.”
“How dare you violate Alex’s memory like this!”
He shrugged. “Vilandra, be reasonable. Its not like he had much use for it anymore, now is it?”
Isabel lunged forward, her hands aiming for his throat, when he pressed a button on a
control unit in his hand, and she dropped to her knees, a wave of nausea washing over her. Kivar stood over her, smirking. He grabbed her upper arm and pulled her roughly
back to her feet.
“I take it you hadn’t noticed that collar we placed around your neck while you were
unconscious.”
He shoved her against the bed and started to leave, when she lifted her head.
“Just tell me one thing - Why Alex? Why did he have to die?”
He turned to face her and shrugged slightly.
“You may not believe me, but I had nothing to do with his death. Your young friend Tess
got a bit too enthusiastic in her mission, and well... accidents happen.” He concluded.
“Not that I would lose much sleep if I was responsible for it.”
“And I assume you caused the dreams I’ve been having about Alex?”
“I did indeed. You and your kin have no idea what you can truly become capable of, if you allowed your abilities to develop. Unfortunately for you, it is an opportunity you will
never get to have now. Through your dreams I got to you, and now I have you, the other
two will soon follow - with a bit of help.”
Isabel lifted her chin defiantly. “If you honestly believe for an instant that I would do
anything to help you, you’re going to be greatly disappointed.”
Kivar smiled indulgently. “If only you knew the truth of the situation. Vilandra, I already
have your help - you just don’t know it yet.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’d say he means me, yo.”
The voice came from behind her, cold as ice and with an edge of steel to it. It was a voice
Isabel knew all too well. It was her own.
“Lonnie, are you mad? Kivar was the one who had us killed in the first place, and you’re
helping him?” Isabel looked around. “What does Rath think about this? Does he even
know?”
“Rath’s concerns are of no matter anymore.” Kivar said. “He was... extraneous to my
purposes and I ordered him eliminated.”
“Murdered, in other words.” Isabel said, beginning to feel ill. She turned her gaze back to
Lonnie. “What could he have offered you to make you betray everyone like this.”
“Relax, Roswell. It’s in the genes, remember? Oh, and for the record, I get a free ride
home and my brother back.”
“I thought your Dupe Max, whatever his name was, died in New York before we even
met?”
Lonnie threw her arm around Kivar’s shoulders and grinned. “Wrong brother.”
Isabel looked from Lonnie to Kivar and back again - as she realized just what it was they
were getting at.
“No. No, you’re lying. You have to be!”
“Not at all.” Kivar observed, calmly. “I was the older of the two of us, but Zan was
always Father’s favorite, and was chosen as his successor upon his death. Even that I
could have forgiven, after a time, but he claimed the woman I loved as his bride, to join our two families together in an alliance. Ava convinced me to let the marriage take place
so she could work from the inside to aid his downfall, and return the throne to me.”
Isabel sat there, fascinated by his story in spite of herself. “But if the two of you loved
each other, why have her killed with the rest of us?”
Kivar laughed bitterly. “The only person she ever truly loved was herself. It didn’t matter
to her who was on the throne, just so long as she sat in power next to them.”
“So when Tess made it back to our home world...”
“She was detained while I extracted all useful information, and then eliminated also.”
“And her baby with her, I suppose?”
Kivar shook his head. “There was no child. That was a ruse on her part to get you all to
return with her so that our battle could be ended once and for all. She had failed in her
mission, and I had no doubts that, given the opportunity, she would betray me as she had
done once before, so I had her removed first.”
Isabel sat in stunned silence as the full realization of what he was saying washed over
her. That anyone could speak so calmly of taking someone’s life from them - and the
idea that he was her brother. Could it be true? She asked herself. For some reason she
couldn’t shake the feeling that it was true, however terrible it may have been to admit it.
And Max? How would he react if he knew....?
“That’s the place, alright.”
Max looked at Nathan.
“What did you find?”
“Plenty of footprints for an abandoned mine that no one has gone to in the last fifty
years.” Nathan observed dryly. “It goes straight into the side of the cliff for about two
hundred meters, then it splits into two tunnels.”
Max nodded. “Michael and I will go left, you and Jim take the right.”
“Done. If we find nothing after twenty minutes, turn back we’ll meet where they split;
we’ll figure our next move from there.”
Max took his hand in a firm grip. “Good luck.”
“To us all. For her sake.”

could have forgiven, after a time, but he claimed the woman I loved as his bride, to join our two families together in an alliance.
“Done. If we find nothing after twenty minutes, turn back we’ll meet where they split;
we’ll figure our next move from there.”
Max took his hand in a firm grip. “Good luck.”
“To us all. For her sake.”
Ah, but where do we turn when the rescuers need to be rescued....I hope the guys can rescue Isabel safely!
FYI, I've decided to wait a few days after this post and then give you the last two sections in one hit. It just seems to lose some of it's impact if I separate them.
================================================
Chapter Thirteen.
Michael crept slowly down the tunnel they had taken, followed closely by Max, who kept
looking back over his shoulder to make sure there was no-one trying to follow them. As
he was looking back, he walked into Michael, who had come to a sudden stop.
“What are you...”
“Sshhh!” Michael hissed, his hand raised. He was silent for a few seconds, then turned to
face Max.
“Can you feel that?”
Max nodded, noticing the vibrations running through the ground beneath his feet, and a
deep rumble of heavy machinery so low it could only just be heard.
“It’s coming from down there.”
“Maybe we should go find the other two?” Michael suggested, but Max shook his head.
“We can’t be sure how far back we’d have to go to find them, or what it is that’s down
there yet. It’d be better if we check it out, then we’ll have something to tell them.”
Michael nodded reluctantly. “This way then.”
They continued to the end of the tunnel, finding it opening to an amazing sight. A circular area, one hundred feet across, with two walkways separated by fifteen feet
running around its circumference leading off to numerous other rooms containing
glimpses of amazing technology. The roof rose into a dome shape with a large crystal
similar in size to the granolith hanging suspended from it, casting an eerie glow over the
scene. In the center of the room was a single pole extending from the floor - and sitting
tied to it was Isabel. Max pushed past Michael and rushed over to her, lifting her face and
brushing her hair back from her face.
“Iz? Can you hear me?”
“...whu.. who?”
“It’s me. Max.” Tears started to form in his eyes at the thought of what she must have
been put through, and he turned to Michael standing next to him.
“See if you can do anything with those ropes. Just hang on, Isabel, we’ll get you out of
here.”
“no..” She mumbled. “..don’t understand. Leave me.”
“Not likely. Michael?”
After a few seconds tugging at the knots the ropes started to fall away, and Michael
whipped them clear, and looked up at Max.
“I’m done. Let’s go.”
With Max on one side and Michael on the other, they placed her arms across their
shoulders and lifted her clear of the floor - and as the trithium generator she had been
maintaining pressure on activated, and sent a pulse through the room, they were knocked
back down on their faces. Max tried to shake his head to clear the dizziness and rolled
over to find Isabel gone, and Lonnie in her place, standing over him, laughing.
“That’s typical, Zan. You never did know how to listen.”
“Lonnie? Where’s Isabel? What have you done with her?!”
“She’s locked up on one of the lower levels. I’m sure the Man will let you see her one
more time before he has you all finished off - not that I’m worried. I got my ticket out,
and I’m taking it.”
“You sound quite sure of yourself, Lonnie. More sure than you should be.”
All three of them turned at the sound of his voice, and Max and Michael were stunned
to see Alex standing above them on the lower walkway flanked by guards, all of whom
were armed. Lonnie pushed through them angrily.
“What’s that supposed to mean? We had a deal, Kivar! I help you get them, and I get to
go home again!”
Alex/Kivar smirked at her. “You’ve betrayed everyone you’ve known on this planet, and
you expect me to trust you?” He waved a hand in Max’s direction. “You’ve become even
more misguided than you claim our dear brother has!”
“Damn it, I’m your sister!” She screamed.
Something cold and feral settled in his expression, and his face looked like it had been
carved from granite.
“Wrong again. Vilandra was my sister - you’re just a second rate knockoff, and a bad one
at that.” With that, he raised his weapon and fired, the blast knocking her screaming to the ground with a hideous scorch mark across her chest. He passed the rifle to one of his
aides and placed both hands on the railing, looking down on the chaos he had created.
“And now, you aren’t even that.”
Max dropped to his knees beside her, but he knew it was already far too late for anything
he could do. He took her hand in his and stroked her forehead as she lay there, dying.
“Zan... Max. I’m sorry. Please, I’m so sorry.”
Tears started to run down his cheeks. “It’s okay. I understand. Don’t be afraid, it’ll be
alright in a minute.”
Michael grabbed his arm roughly. “What are you doing? Why don’t you do something to
fix the damage?”
“Because I can’t, Michael. That thing on the floor is the same as what Brody used when
he held us hostage at the UFO center. None of us can use our powers.” He looked at
Michael, staring intently. “NONE of our powers.”
Lonnie gasped for breath a couple of times and stiffened, then she went limp and her grip
on Max’s hand slackened. He folded her arms across her chest, and passed his hand over
her eyes, closing them. Rising to his feet, he turned to face Kivar, struggling to control the rage burning through him.
“So how many does that make it, Kivar? Do you even know? Do you even CARE??”
“Don’t play the innocent with me, brother dear. You may not remember, but I do - you’ve killed your fair share as well.”
“Not those working for me, I didn’t. Remember Nacedo?”
Kivar nodded. “All too well. His death was disappointing, but necessary.”
Michael stood up next to Max. “Necessary for what? The way Tess told the story, you
two had a deal going behind the scenes.”
Kivar nodded. “For a time we did. His time on this world was not always a happy one,
unfortunately. When he was revived by the four of you using the stones, it had not been
a full recovery. He recalled all too well what had happened to him the last time he had
been captured by that group, and he was adamant he would never be anyone else’s toy.
He sought an alliance with the Skins, as you call them, hoping to use their influence in
your government to allow him to eventually take over. To do so, however, he wanted to
keep you all alive as his personal attendants. Nicholas realized the threat this could create
to our plans, and contacted me with the information, upon which I ordered his execution.”
Max waved his hand towards him. “What about what happened to Alex?”
Kivar shrugged. “A casualty of war. It should be no surprise I wear his face - you yourself, with as little as you know of your potential, are able to alter things at a
molecular level. I did the same thing when I first inhabited this body, to match the
appearance of our sister’s paramour.”
Max stared at him intently. “OUR sister??”
“You can ask her yourself soon enough. You should be together when you all die again -
it worked so well last time.” Kivar turned to one of his aides. “Have the female brought
up here to join these two. It’s time to end this once and for all.”
Ah well, Roswell Luver, guess it's just down to the two of us. Let's wrap things up, eh?
================================================
Chapter Fourteen.
Kivar looked down at Max and Michael with a satisfied grin on his face, as four guards
emerged from the tunnel behind the pair to prevent any attempt for escape.
“Just think, after all this time, it’s finally over. In a short while my throne will be secure
for all time, the three of you will be lying in a shallow unmarked grave in the woods, and
I’ll be able to leave this carcass and return home.”
Max looked up. “So that isn’t... you standing there.”
“Not really. The technology is similar to that used for our summit meeting in New York.”
Michael caught some movement out of the corner of his eye and tried to keep a grin off
his face when he realized what it was.
“So how do you keep in control of the body? I thought you couldn’t do it for very long
because it wasted so much energy?”
Kivar turned to him. “That was the case once, but an operation such as this required a
personal touch. The crystal above you allows my consciousness to be fully transferred
from my real body to this one, with my real body placed in suspended animation.”
Michael nodded. “Too bad that blue one on the floor blocks our powers, or you could find yourself in a whole world of hurt, then.”
“I’d hardly be in the position I’m in now by taking such unnecessary risks.” He observed
dryly, and turned as one of his lieutenants whispered in his ears, and Max looked at
Michael.
“What are you up to?”
Michael grinned. “Let’s just say we have friends in high places. Be ready to move for the
doorway.”
“WHAT??” Kivar roared. Max and Michael looked up to see his aide gesturing with his
hands, trying to calm his leader.
“Then find her! Must I do everything around here??”
“Having problems?” Max enquired sweetly.
Kivar glared at him, with anger burning behind his eyes. “I had hoped to do this properly,
and have the three of you together at the end, but our beloved sister has decided to try and escape, so I’m going to have to kill you now and finish her off once she is
recaptured.” He took a rifle from his guard and raised it to his shoulder. “Any last
comments you wish to have immortalized as you die?”
“Just one.” Michael yelled out. “Welcome to Earth!”
As Kivar bought his rifle down to aim at the pair, Michael threw himself against Max,
and the crack of a rifle shot echoed through the chamber. The generator in the floor
erupted in a flash of light, and Max felt his power surging through him once again.
“Max, shield!”
Max raised his hand and a green energy force appeared in front of them, absorbing the
impact of the blast Kivar had squeezed off. Before a second one could be fired, Kivar
fell, clutching at his shoulder as a fountain of blood spurted from the bullet that had just
passed through it. Seeing him fall, Michael lifted his arm, sending an energy pulse straight through the crystal hovering above them, and shattering it into a thousand pieces.
Kivar’s mournful howl was lost amid the din as the remnants fell to the earth, and a
plume of dust and smoke cascaded into the air. Max doubled over, coughing, and felt
others around him grabbing his arms and pulling him away. He tried to fight them off,
but found himself in a clear space, with two others appearing out of the fog helping
Michael.
“What happened to him?”
“A twisted ankle. Nothing serious, but we must leave now, Majesty, before the usurper
can rally his defenses against us.”
Max eyed them warily. “How can we know we can trust you?”
“Because they’re part of the same group that led us to Isabel.”
Nathan strode out of the fog, coiling the rope he had used to get down from the upper
walkway and throwing it over his shoulder.
“Apparently one of their people met you guys last year sometime. They said her name on
this world was Courtney.”
Michael nodded. “Max, we can trust them, believe me. They’re here to help.”
He thought about things for a second, but realized there was little in the way of options.
“Okay, let’s get going. Where’s Isabel?”
“She’s waiting for us with Jim and the rest of this group of supporters you managed to
pick up.” Nathan replied.
They turned and headed out the way they had come in, with Michael in front and Max and Nathan covering their rear. When they reached the tunnel junction, they found the
others waiting nervously for them. Isabel hugged Max and Michael fiercely, but the
celebration was cut short as the Skin’s leader, Jevia, spoke up.
“Highness, we have to keep moving. The longer we delay, the more danger you’re placed
in.”
“Just a minute.” Bending down by Michael, Max placed his hand over his ankle and a brief glow appeared around it as he healed the damage. Michael gently put his weight on
it to test it, then nodded.
“That’s got it. Let’s go.”
As they turned to leave, Jevia turned to two of his people. “Get them safely away. You
know what to do.”
Michael stepped forward. “Jevia, what are you doing? You can’t stay here!”
Jevia smiled sadly. “My lord, it has been the greatest honor to serve you once again. On
our homeworld, I was what humans would call your champion, and close friend. My
group and I infiltrated Kivar’s organization in the hope of fulfilling our vows to see to
your protection, and we both know that we cannot allow this facility to remain intact.
The danger it represents is too great.”
Michael tried to speak, but Jevia cut him off.
“Please, Rath. I failed you once before - I’ll not do so again.”
Michael gripped his shoulder, and nodded. “If you make it out of here, you know where to find me.”
They turned and ran for the exit from the mine, the rumbles and howls of various energy
weapons fading into the background behind them. They burst into full daylight and crested the top of the hill they had looked down at the mine from when they first arrived.
There was a deep rumble which shook the ground beneath them, and they fell. As they
got up, they turned to see a large fireball erupt from the mouth of the mine, before the
roof collapsed and sealed the entrance. Michael stared down at the scene, looking
shocked.
“They died for us.”
“Maybe.” He turned to see Nathan standing next to him. “You can’t be sure, though. It
was their choice to make, and they made it because they believed it was worth the cost.
All we can do is make sure we honor what they did by living the best we can to deserve
what they did for us.”
“I know I only met the guy for a few minutes, but it feels like I had found a part of me that I didn’t even know was missing, and now it’s gone again.”
“I guess we’ll have to see what we can do about filling in the gaps.” He placed a hand on
Michael’s shoulder. “Come on, man. Maria and the others will be waiting for us. Let’s go
home.”
Michael took one last look down at the mine, with a slight sad smile. “Home. Yeah, lets
go home.”
================================================
Epilogue.
A few hours, and many tears of joy, later, they were all sitting at the Crashdown, going
over what had happened in the mine. Nathan raised his glass in salute to Michael.
“That was a pretty good play, taking out that crystal of his.”
“Yeah, well, we needed something to give us some cover while we got out of there, and
I figured that would make enough mess to keep them busy for a bit.”
Nathan grinned into his glass. “I wonder if he’s having much trouble with his shoulder.”
Liz looked at him. “I doubt it. He’s probably sitting in his throne room cursing the lot of
us for wrecking his plans.”
“No he isn’t.”
“You sound pretty sure of yourself.” Max replied.
Nathan laughed. “That’s because I was there. You mean Michael and I are the only ones
who get it?”
“Try it again in english, because you’ve lost me as well.” Michael said, leaning forward.
Nathan set his glass down on the table. “He said his original body was suspended while he was here on Earth. Why do that if he was able to control it? Because he couldn’t!
There was no intelligence in his body while he was here, and the crystal was what
allowed him to transfer his mind from one body to the other.”
Max’s eyes lit up. “So with the crystal destroyed...”
Michael caught on. “He has no way of getting back to his original body.”
Nathan completed the idea. “And now he’s just as stuck here as you lot are. Nice work,
Mickey. One shot, and you may have very well saved your entire planet.”
Everyone started laughing as Maria leaned against Michael with a hand to her forehead.
“Oh, my hero...”
A few days later, Isabel was keeping an important appointment, and she placed a single
red rose next to the headstone as the rain fell lightly.
“Hi, Alex. I know it’s been a while, and I’m sorry.” She smiled sadly. “Things were pretty crazy for a while, even for us. I’ve been thinking about you though, and I’ve
missed you.”
She placed her hand on his name. “I was thinking about what you said to me the night you died, about how you wouldn’t want me to be where you were, and I finally figured it
out. It’s not that you didn’t want to be with me, but I still have things to do, and if I was
with you, I wouldn’t be able to do them.”
She sniffed, looking back at Nathan, standing a respectful distance away, leaning against a tree.
“I wish you could meet him, Alex. I’m pretty sure the two of you would have gotten on
really well. Seeing the look in his eyes when he found me down there, it was incredible.
I’m not sure where he and I will end up, but I know it should be an interesting trip.” She
stood to go, and looked down one last time. “You’ll always be the first guy I really loved,
Alex Whitman, and I’ll carry that with me for the rest of my life, but life is for living, and
I think it’s time I started living again.”
As she turned and walked away, the rain slackened, then stopped completely, and the sun
started to break through a gap in the clouds. She turned to look back and saw Alex’s
headstone glittering from the rain drops covering it, like tiny diamonds imbedded in its
surface. She was sure she could hear his gentle laughter in the whisper of the trees, that
he was happy, and he would want her to be as well. With a smile on her face, she walked
over to Nathan, sliding an arm across his back and leaning against his shoulder as they
headed back to the van, and whatever the future held for them.
