<center>Chapter One</center>

(Max POV)

“Max! Hey, Max!”

I look up from the cute redhead and glare across the quad at the person who was rude enough to interrupt me from my latest conquest.

A slinky blonde makes her way towards me, shapely hips swaying back and forth as she struts along.

Guys practically fall out of their chairs as they struggle for a closer look at her scantily clad body, but I remain cool and collected, unfazed by her lithe form.

It’s nothing I haven’t already had before. Although, I have to admit the tight blouse and short skirt have not escaped my attention.

As she appears by my side, she flashes me a seductive smile, to which I grin lazily back.

“What brings you by, Tess?” I drawl, in that voice that I know drives all the ladies wild.

She flutters her lashes at me, then narrows her eyes at the female still standing next to me.

“Um, excuse you, this is personal business,” she raises an eyebrow and the girl scampers off, tossing a longing look in my direction.

I sigh and lean my elbows back against the table, cocking my brows. “This had better be important, Tess. You just cost me a fine piece of ass.”

She rolls her eyes and sits daintily next to me. “Please, Max. Trina Wilkins is nothing but a sad serving of sloppy seconds. She just broke up with Tommy Mitchell! You could do a lot better.”

I raise an eyebrow towards her and my lips curl. “Oh, really? Like… you, perhaps? Sorry Tess, been there, done that already, remember?”

Her eyes flash, but she doesn't have anything to say.

Tess Harding is the classic School Princess. To the outside eye she appears untouchable – beautiful, blonde, sexy as hell.

The faculty and parents absolutely love her, they believe she is the epitome of female charm. Class president, head cheerleader, all that shit.

She's also the easiest fuck I’ve ever known.

The girl has an insatiable thirst for sex. Not that I’m complaining, but she even rivals me at times. You might call her a slut, but I guarantee you wouldn’t call her that to her face.

Not with the looming threat of Edward Harding.

Tess’s grandfather practically owns the town of Roswell, and the only thing he loves more than his money is his sweet, innocent granddaughter.

I wonder what he'd do if he knew how she begged me tie her to the bed and fuck her from behind.

I have to admit, I may not like the girl, but she is a nice fuck.

Anyway… I’m digressing.

“So, are you going to tell me why you ran off my date for tonight, or are you gonna sit there and file your fucking nails?” I demand, getting a little irritated.

She smirks at me, leaning over so that her ample breasts threaten to spill out of her top.

Being the man I am, I look down and lick my lips at the tanned cleavage.

“Ooh, someone sounds a little frustrated,” Tess purrs, reaching under the table and stroking my rapidly growing arousal.

I raise another eyebrow. “Are you offering to relieve my frustration, Tessa?” I reply huskily.

Her blue eyes darken as she leans closer to me. “I have a proposal for you, Max. And if you do what I ask, I promise I will do whatever you want.”

I tilt my head to the side, contemplating her statement, then yawn. “And what makes you think I want you to?”

She frowns slightly at being put off, then smiles again, shifting a little closer. “Because, I know what you need, baby. I know what drives you wild…”

Okay, now I’m intrigued.

The last time Tess felt wild, I ended up being the proud spectator while she and some chick she met a club tongue-fucked each other.

Like I said, she is freak-ay. But who’s complaining? Besides, she gives great head.

“What’s the deal?” I ask, flashing a flirtatious grin to a group of cheerleaders who are giggling and smiling at me.

“My aunt and uncle died last week,” Tess rolls her eyes.

“Wow, you sound so broken up about that,” I reply wryly.

God, this girl is a major bitch. But once again… she gives extremely good head.

“Ugh! They were like, those religious types, you know?” she scoffed, obviously disgusted at the idea. “I mean, no drinking, no sex… no fun!”

“Sounds awful,” I respond sarcastically. “What’s the point, here?”

“Anyway, they have a teenage daughter. She’s our age. And grandpa is bringing her here! To Roswell! Can you believe it?”

I raise an eyebrow wickedly. “Is she hot?”

“She’s probably a freaking virgin!” Tess snidely remarks. “I mean, can you imagine me having to live with a goody-goody priss? I bet she’s never even seen a dick before!”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ve seen enough for the whole state of New Mexico,” I smile sarcastically.

She doesn’t appear to be offended by my very true remark, because she continues babbling about her predicament.

I force myself to continue listening, even though all I want to do is toss my earphones on and drown out her voice.

“… so then he told me that I would have to share the money with her!” she ends moments later, wrinkling her nose.

“Okay, so you and your cousin have to split your granddaddy’s assets. Well, sorry Tess, but I don’t see where I fit into this little scheme you’re planning,” I stretch languidly.

“I want you to seduce her.”

My eyes widen and I glance over at her. “You want me to what?”

Tess smiles and speaks in a sharp, clear voice, “I said, I want you to seduce her. Fuck her, pop her cherry, whatever the hell you want to call it.”

I narrow my eyes. “And exactly why would that help you?”

Tess flashes me a sweet and innocent smile. “Because, old Ed would do anything to keep his reputation clean. Even if it means disowning his own grandchild.”

I nod knowingly. “So, you want me to screw your cousin, and then your gramps will take her out of his will and leave everything to you?”

Tess winks in confirmation. “You got it, stud.”

“And what will be your proof?” I ask, twirling a pen through my fingers. “How exactly are you going to make your grandfather believe that your cousin’s a Grade A slut?”

“Oh, just leave it to me, Maxie. All you need to worry about is getting into my cousin’s pants. And if anyone can do it, you can.”

With that, she places a kiss on my cheek, and stands up to walk away, smiling at her many admirers.

<center>Part 1 – One week later</center>

(Max POV)

“Ah, fuck!” I groan, thrusting frantically into the faceless blonde against the wall.

I continue to growl profanities as my orgasm washes over me, leaving me sweaty and satisfied.

She reaches out for me, trying to pull my face to hers for a kiss, but I immediately pull away and she almost falls on the ground as I unwrap her long legs from around my waist.

I busy myself by pulling my pants back up and running a hand through my tousled hair.

I look down and see my latest lay smiling up at me adoringly. “Well, it’s been real nice, Mandy, but I gotta get to class.”

She rushes to stand up as I open the door of the Eraser room and head out.

“It’s Candie!” she calls after me hopefully, but I’ve already forgotten she exists.

It’s like that with me sometimes. Okay, all the time.

Some would say that makes me an asshole, but I disagree. I think I give these girls exactly what they want.

Absolutely mind-blowing sex with no attachments.

And if they don’t like it? Oh well, that’s their fucking problem. I’ve never made any illusions as to what I wanted so they shouldn’t be surprised.

I’m not the tamable type. All I want is a nice piece of pussy.

As I round the corner, I find my best friend Michael Guerin making out with his girlfriend, Maria DeLuca, against his locker.

I smirk as Mikey boy runs his hands down her ass and walk over to interrupt his little hallway fantasy.

“Why don’t you guys take it to the Eraser room? It’s free now,” I joke, leaning against the locker next to Michael.

Maria lets out a little shriek and pushes Michael away, straightening her clothes before glaring at me.

Maria doesn’t exactly like me. At all. Okay, she hates me with a passion. Do I care?

Hell no.

“What, your latest fuck-toy run out of batteries?” she snaps at me, narrowing her eyes at my disheveled appearance.

“No, all my playthings are operating quite nicely,” I smirk back at her. “What about you, DeLuca? Have you had to change out the copper-tops in your vibrator yet?”

Her mouth falls open and her face turns an amusing shade of red. “You… you asshole!” she snaps at me, before stomping off.

I laugh at the irritation on Michael’s face and slap him on the back. “Don’t worry, she’ll be back.”

Michael rolls his eyes. “Man, you gotta quit hassling her like that.”

“Oh, she’ll get over it. And tomorrow I’m sure she’ll have a real nice comeback for me,” I shrug. “Besides… did you see her face?”

Michael snorts despite himself and I chuckle as we both picture Maria’s reaction to my comment.

“Anyway, what’s this I hear about you and Tess Harding?” Michael eyes me in interest.

I roll my eyes. “What about it?”

“I heard about her running off Trina last week. What, she still trying to sink her claws into you?”

“The only thing Tess wants to sink into is her granddaddy’s bank account,” I retort. “She’s made me some kind of deal to get her cousin out of the picture.”

Michael raises his eyebrows. “What kind of deal? And why do I think it’s probably not a good thing?”

“Maybe because you know it’s Tess?” I offer.

“Don’t change the subject. What’s she up to and why are you involved?”

I sigh, shoving my hands in my pockets as we make our way towards our classroom. “She wants me to seduce her sweet, unsuspecting, virginal cousin so that her grandfather will take her out of his will.”

Michael’s eyes bug out and he stops to look at me. “Are you out of your mind?! Maxwell, please tell me you aren’t seriously considering doing this.”

I shrug nonchalantly. “Let’s say she’s made me an offer I can’t refuse.”

“What, she offered to be your sex-slave?” Michael retorts sarcastically.

“Something like that,” I smirk and he shakes his head.

“Maxwell, I just knew one of these days sex was going to get you in trouble. Have you even thought about what you’re doing to this poor girl?” he asks me accusingly.

I roll my eyes at Michael’s bleeding heart attitude. He’s been that way ever since he and Maria started dating. Before that, he was almost as big a player as I was.

But he changed himself all for the love of a woman, so they say.

He often teases me about how I’ll do the same thing if I ever meet the right girl, but I laugh it off.

There is no one out there that I would change my ways for. Why should I? All females are the same – only good for one thing.

Michael’s still my best bud, but I have to say he was a lot more fun when he wasn’t waxing poetic half the time.

Damn Maria DeLuca.

“Why should I worry about it?” I shrug again. “If she isn’t smart enough to see through Tess then that’s her problem.”

“Whatever dude, I just hope this doesn’t all blow up in your face,” Michael says as we make our way into Mrs. Hardy’s biology class.

We are immediately surrounded by giggling girls as they smile and toss their hair flirtatiously.

Michael smiles politely and takes his seat across from me while I soak it all up, winking at the gullible females.

I take special notice of a particular blonde who is eyeing me up laviciously.

Hmm… maybe I’ll have to make some extra time between classes.

<center>**********************</center>

(Liz POV)

So this is it.

West Roswell High.

My new school to go along with my new life. Yippee. Note my lack of enthusiasm there.

But I plaster a smile to my face anyway and nod as I listen to the secretary behind the desk as she hands me my new class schedule.

“If you’ll just wait a few minutes, they’ve assigned a student to show you around,” she smiles sweetly. “She’s in the school’s Sunshine Club.”

“Sunshine Club?” I echo in confusion.

“Yes, they help new students get settled in and feel comfortable with their new surroundings,” she explains. “You can never have too much sunshine!”

Amused, I nod my agreement. Okay… some bizarre sort of welcome wagon?

I go to sit in a plush chair as I wait for my guide to show up. As I pass the time, my mind wanders to my arrival in New Mexico.

My grandpa Ed seemed very happy to have me there and upset about my parents…

Don’t want to think about that.

He offered to let me stay in the guesthouse, which was more than enough seeing as how it was practically the size of most of the regular houses in Roswell.

My grandfather’s hospitality was overshadowed by the false welcome I received from my cousin.

Tess pretended to be happy to see me, but I’m no idiot. I could see through her blinding smiles and saccharine attitude.

Something about the way her eyes glinted with disapproval clued me in.

My pondering is cut short as a petite blonde hurries through the office, panting as she addresses the woman behind the desk.

“Hi! I’m so sorry I’m late, I had a French Club meeting and it went over! Is she still here?” she asks hopefully.

The lady smiles and points towards me. The blonde blows out a sigh of relief and makes her way over to me.

“Hi! I’m Maria DeLuca! You must be Liz Parker?”

I smile and nod my head like the good little girl I am. “Yes, it’s nice to meet you, Maria.”

“You too! I’m so sorry I’m late! I had a French club meeting and-“

As she begins her speech again, I notice her friendly smile and apologetic eyes and realize she’s being sincere.

“It’s no problem,” I assure her. “Everyone has a life, right?”

She laughs lightly and I smile in response.

“I think we’re going to get along just fine, Liz,” she replies, motioning for me to follow her.

I hope so.

<center>********************</center>

“So, Liz… why did you move to Roswell?” Maria asks as she flashes me another one of her sweet smiles.

A pang goes through me, but I force myself to smile. “Oh, um… just family stuff. Have you lived here a long time?”

She snorts and waves her hand. “All my life. I think I know every single person in this god-forsaken town.”

“Yeah? I didn’t realize it was so small here,” I say, glancing down the hall as students’ meander unhurriedly to their classes.

“Oh, it’s not really… I’m just very friendly,” she explains. “But at least I can tell you who to avoid.”

I raise my eyes and look at her. “What do you mean?”

“Well, let’s just say that not all of West Roswell’s students have other people’s best interests at heart. In fact, I’d fathom a guess that some of them don’t have a heart,” she scowls.

“And these people would be…” I inquire curiously. Hey, I may be a goody-goody but I am a girl. I love to gossip.

“Well, no offense... but your cousin isn’t exactly the friendliest person in the world,” Maria bites her lip trying to gauge my reaction.

I laugh. “Well, she may not be Mary Tyler Moore, but Tess isn’t that bad…” I trail off as I remember the way I caught her glaring at me when she didn’t think I was watching.

Maria doesn’t look convinced, but refrains from saying anything in return as we walk into a classroom.

The teacher apparently hasn’t arrived, as the students are currently laughing and goofing off.

“Ms. Hardy’s always late,” Maria explains, as a smile lights her face. She waves across the room and my eyes follow to land on a cute spiky-haired guy.

He is smiling back and motioning for us to come back to where he’s sitting. Maria’s eyes shift to his left and her smile fades as her expression darkens.

I glance to the person sitting next to Michael and my eyes widen slightly as they land on quite possibly the most handsome guy I’ve ever seen.

His short raven hair falls slightly across his forehead in a way that just makes you long to brush it aside.

His jaw is strong and his cheekbones angular, leading to a pair of sensual lips. You can practically see the muscles of his upper body bursting the seams of his expensive sweater as he flexes his arm.

But the most amazing thing about him has to be his eyes – golden and piercing.

And currently staring straight into mine.

I blush slightly, embarrassed to be caught gawking, and turn towards Maria.

“That’s my boyfriend, Michael Guerin,” she tells me in a proud voice.

I nod in response. “How long have you two been together?”

“Oh, about a year now,” she grins airily and I can’t help but smile at her giddiness.

Just then, Ms. Hardy rushes in the room and Maria quickly yanks me into the nearest empty desk.

“Good morning class,” she smiles. “Sorry that I’m late, but what can I say. My dog ate my lesson plans.”

The class titters in response and I let a small smile light my lips. Well, so far the teachers and students of West Roswell don’t seem too bad.

“I see we have a new student with us here today, all the way from Washington! Liz Parker? Would you mind standing up?”

My face turns about five shades of red as the class looks around waiting to check out the fresh meat.

Meekly I stand up, keeping my eyes downcast to hide my blush.

“Well, Liz, it’s nice to have you here in AP Biology,” Ms. Hardy smiles, “I’m sure everyone here will do their best to help you catch up.”

I smile and mumble shyly, “Thank you.”

I quickly sit down and my eyes dart around to see if everyone is still staring at me. Good, they’re all listening to Ms. Hardy now.

As I glance again at the back of the room, I realize that Mr. Gorgeous is still staring intently at me.

I hold his gaze for a moment, and his lips curl into a sexy grin.

Suddenly, I feel a sharp jab in my side and turn to find Maria glaring at my eye candy.

“I can’t believe him,” she mutters to herself and I frown.

“What are you talking about?”

She turns to me, giving me a serious look. “Listen, Liz. I told you I would warn you about people to steer clear of, therefore as your friend I would be incredibly in the wrong if I didn’t warn you about Max Evans.”

I raise an eyebrow in interest. “Max Evans?”

She rolls her eyes towards the back of the classroom. “That Hunk-of-burning-love that you were just staring at?”

My heart skips a beat. “What about him?”

“Well, let’s just say that Mr. Evans is very fond of the ladies…” she trails off hoping I get the point.

My brows crease in thought. “So what, he’s like a player or something?”

“Or something,” Maria mutters under her breath. Louder she replies, “He’s like, the King of Players, Liz. He’s the quinsenntial hump’n’dumper. Stay away from him if you value your integrity.”

I glance back in Max’s direction and find him laughing with Michael about something.

I am drawn to the way his lips move and his eyes glow as he speaks and I can feel my heart begin racing.

I turn back to Maria. “Are you sure?”

She snorts. “Trust me. Unfortunately, he’s Michael’s best friend and I get to hear about his latest conquests practically every day.”

I bite my lip. Is it true? Well, that would just figure. The first guy I get butterflies over would be an asshole.

“Just stay away from him, Liz,” Maria warns me and I nod slowly.

My eyes meet Max’s once more before Maria begins on a different topic.

<center>********************************** </center>

<center>Part 2</center>

(Max POV)

I rest my head in my hands as I attempt to drown out Ms. Hardy’s incessant babbling about the mating habits of slugs.

Can I get an Ew, gross?

I find my gaze inevitably drawn once again to the petite brunette sitting next to Maria.

My eyes slide over the silky curtain of luxurious hair that cascades across her arms as she bends her head to jot down notes.

I recall the gentle, almost doe-like quality her soft brown eyes held when they looked into mine, and find that my heart jumps.

As if realizing that someone’s staring at her, she turns slightly around and glances back in my direction.

Our eyes meet again and she offers me a small smile, which causes my heart to flutter again.

Interesting.

Just as I’m about to smile back, I see Maria DeLuca glaring at me and roll my eyes.

What is that girl’s problem anyway? It’s not like I’ve ever done anything to her.

Have I?

Oh well, I wouldn’t remember anyway.

Just then, the bell rings and I watch as my mystery girl stands up and walks out the door with Maria.

My feet seem to have a mind of their own as they jump up and begin propelling me to follow her.

“Hey, Maxwell! Where you going?” Michael calls after me.

“Oh, I gotta… take a piss,” I call back, grabbing my bag and heading towards the door.

I’m in such a rush to leave that I don’t even notice the pair of disappointed eyes following me as I pass the voluptuous blonde from earlier.

I head into the hallway and my eyes scan for the sight of the cute brunette.

To my displeasure, I don’t see her anywhere. Sighing slightly, I continue my trek towards my next period class, ignoring the seductive glances thrown my way.

As I enter my English class, I catch a glimpse of chocolate tresses at the back of the room.

The head looks up and I find myself once again staring into swirling depths.

Making a snap decision, I make my way back there and take the seat next to her.

Kyle will have to get over it.

“Hi,” I smile charmingly in her direction, propping my head in my hand as I study her.

She turns slightly towards me, a coy smile gracing her full lips. “Hi,” she responds.

“So… Liz is it?” I inquire, scooting closer in her direction. She doesn’t move, but doesn’t act overly interested either.

“Mm hmm,” she hums, tapping her pencil against her notebook aimlessly.

I frown at her dismissal, and open my mouth again in order to rectify this situation. “So, I don’t suppose you’d be interested in knowing my name?”

She cocks her head, her brown eyes twinkling mischievously. “Oh… I know all about you… Max Evans,” she replies in a light tone.

I raise my eyebrows flirtatiously and lean closer to her. “Oh, you do? And what exactly do you know?”

She looks at me full on this time, raising her own perfectly arched brows. “Enough to know that I’m not interested.”

And with that, she turns away from me, concentrating on something in front of the class.

I sit in shock for about ten seconds. What the hell? Okay, obviously my reputation has preceded itself.

Normally, I wouldn’t care. If she wanted to have fun, fine. If not, then it’s not worth my time.

But for some reason this particular girl’s dismissal is causing all kinds of ruckus inside me.

Then it hits me like a ton of bricks. “Maria told you.”

She turns to me, surprise on her face. “How did you know?”

I sigh, wishing I had a length of rope to tie around that meddler’s neck. “Oh, because she hates me with the fire of a thousand suns. Which is a direct quote, by the way.”

“Oh? And why in the world would she hate you so much…” Liz quirks her lips and I want to kiss her. “Unless, perhaps there’s some truth to what she said?”

“Well, I have no idea what Hurricane DeLuca has told you, but I can assure you that I am not the Devil Incarnate,” I smile disarmingly.

Liz gasps. “How did you know that’s what she called you?”

“She said that?!” I yelp, my anger growing by the second.

Liz erupts into a fit of giggles and lays a gentle hand on my arm. “Oh, Max! I’m just teasing you!”

My eyes fall to where she is still touching me, feeling a thrill race through my body.

I shake my head to clear it and smile again. “So… you know all these things about me, but I don’t know a single thing about you.”

She smirks and tilts her head again. “Oh really? And what exactly is it that you want to know?”

And bring out the big guns.

I bat my eyes innocently, “Oh… favorite bands, favorite movies… do you have a boyfriend?”

Not that it would make a difference. I want this girl, and by God I’m gonna have her.

She laughs and bites her lip. “Well… Dave Matthews, romantic comedies… and no.”

“So, Just Married is playing at the Highland’s tonight, how about we check it out?” I ask, flashing my charmingly sexy smile.

And afterwards, I could explore that beautiful mouth of yours more fully.

Her smile falters and she looks down. “Oh, listen Max. What I said earlier? I’m… I’m really not interested.”

I raise my eyebrows. “What?”

She smiles. “You seem like a nice guy, Max. I hope we could be friends?”

“Oh, yeah… right.”

Remind me to kill Maria DeLuca later.

After class, Liz smiles at me and proceeds to exit the classroom.

Me? Well, I’m not about to take this sitting down. I grab my books and once again attempt to follow her.

Once in the hallway, I am again surrounded by a group of adoring girls as they gush and flirt with me.

This time, I don’t have time to chat. I push through them and look down the hallway, hoping to spot those familiar russet locks.

Instead, I find none other than Tess Harding walking my way.

“Hi, Maxie,” she purrs, sidling up to me and running her hand down my chest as she places a kiss on my cheek.

Now, normally I wouldn’t be all that against Tess’s affections. I mean, I wouldn’t return them but I would flirt back.

However, at the moment the feel of her hands on me makes me sick. Irritated, I yank away from her and wipe my cheek.

“What do you want?” I ask, looking over her shoulder in the hopes of spotting Liz.

She frowns and crosses her arms across her huge chest. “I just came to let you know that my cousin’s here and you need to get started on your end of the deal.”

My eyebrows raise. “Oh really? And where is she?”

“She’s around, I’m sure,” Tess rolls her eyes. “Her name’s Liz Parker and you’ll know her because she’s like, a total geek.”

My eyes widen and I fall back against the nearest locker. “L…Liz Parker?”

Tess’s eyes narrow suspiciously. “Yeah… what, do you know her?”

“No, not exactly,” I lie.

Not yet.

“Well, you better get to know her and quick, too,” Tess snaps. “Ed’s got her living it up nice and fancy in the guest cottage. I’ve had about enough of this!”

“Look, I’ll see you later, Tess,” I reply, needing to get away from her annoying voice and contemplate these newest events.

“Where are you going?” she asks, watching as I walk away. “Max!”

I don’t bother to answer her, instead I continue my path down the hall.

<center>**********************</center>

Okay, so I’m sitting here in the men’s bathroom staring at myself in the mirror.

What the hell’s the matter with me? Since when do I actually care about anyone else’s feelings beside myself?

Never.

So then why the hell does ruining this girl’s life suddenly seem so wrong to me?

“Ah!” I shake my head to clear my thoughts and run a hand down my face.

I’ve got to get back in control here. Okay, so this girl is pretty, whatever. It’s not like that makes her any different from the dozens of other girls I’ve chased.

Only I keep getting this irritating prick of conscious every time I recall my deal with Tess.

A slight vibration halts my assessment of the situation and I glance down to see my pager blinking.

I read the flashing words.

Hey, Loverboy. Meet me in the Eraser Room… five minutes. Trina.

I erase the message, a smile curling my lips.

Hmm… maybe all I need is a good distraction.

<center>Part 3</center>

(Max POV)

So I’m walking down the hall to take Trina up on her oh-so-generous offer, when I spot a head of glossy dark hair over by the lockers.

I stop and watch as Liz Parker stands on her tiptoes, rifling through her cubby.

From my vantage point, I can see the smooth expanse of her flat stomach as her tank top rides up.

All thoughts of my eraser room rendezvous forgotten, I slide a dazzling smile on my face and saunter up to her.

“Need some help?” I question amiably, licking my lips at the naked flesh that is exposed to my roving gaze.

She startles slightly, then relaxes as she realizes it’s me. A small smile graces her face and she shakes her head.

“That’s okay, I think I have it under control,” she replies easily, placing a pen in her mouth as she pulls several books out to place in the bag at her feet.

I lean casually against a nearby locker and regard her intensely. “Do you now?”

She glances at me and I note a slight blush creeping up her glorious neck at my perusal.

“Yep, just had a little trouble getting this darn thing open,” she frowns at her locker combination.

I move closer, breathing in the sweet scent of vanilla emanating from her.

“Well, it’s tricky,” I murmur huskily, delighting in the sudden stiffening of her shoulders. “You kind of have to work on it before it gives in.”

The suggestive note of my voice doesn’t go unnoticed as she turns to face me, a glint of amusement in her chocolate eyes.

“Thanks for the tip,” she responds, smiling at me as she pulls her bag across her shoulders. “I’ll see you later, Max.”

She starts to walk off and I am once again left staring after her.

The subtle sway of her hips breaks me out of my stupor and I rush to catch up with her.

“So… where you headed?” I ask, walking close enough to her that our arms brush against each other with every step.

She lets out a sigh but doesn’t look my way. “English. With Mr. Seligman.”

“What a coincidence,” I answer in surprise. “That’s exactly where I’m going.”

She looks at me then, her eyes skeptical. “Is that a fact?”

I flash her an innocent smile and nod. “Maybe we could sit together. Get to know each other better…”

My open-ended invitation is received with a snort of amusement.

By this time we’ve reached the English hall and I stop in front of Mr. Seligman’s room, holding my arm out to Liz.

“After you,” I smile, and she walks past without taking my hand.

I immediately follow her to where she has taken up residence and glare at the kid in the seat next to her.

He swallows and gathers his books, slinking away to find a different location.

I smirk and take the now empty seat. Glancing over, I find Liz staring at me with a bemused expression.

“Is there something on my face?” I query innocently and she bites her lip before looking away.

Before I can start a real conversation, Mr. Seligman claps his hands together and gives everyone a fake smile.

“Today I’ll be assigning you partners for your Chaucer Journals that will be due at the end of the month,” he says crisply.

I roll my eyes and glance back over to find Liz listening intently to the old coot.

I nudge her and wiggle my eyebrows up and down. She frowns and turns back to the teacher.

Ok-ay, Tess was right when she said this girl was frigid.

But for some reason, the idea of being the one to melt that ice makes me hornier than I’ve ever been in my life. And that’s saying something.

“The person sitting next to you will be your collaborator on this assignment, so get to know this person intimately.”

I watch Liz stiffen again at his use of the word intimate, and a satisfied smirk steals over my features as she places a hand behind her neck.

As for me, I’m thinking of getting Mr. Seligman a big present for making Liz and I partners. Maybe I’ll hook him up with a hot piece of ass. Lord knows he probably hasn’t had any since Kennedy was shot.

“You’ll need to get together with your partner sometime this week and decide which tale you would like to study for this project,” Mr. Seligman continues to drone.

By the end of the period, I turn to Liz and raise my eyebrows. “So, partner… your place or mine?”

She flushes and mumbles something incoherent.

“Pardon me?” I bat my eyelashes and lean closer to her. “I didn’t quite hear you.”

“I said, I’ll get back to you on that,” she replies sweetly, brown eyes glittering.

“How about my house this afternoon?” I respond as though I didn’t hear her. “My parents are out of town this week so we’ll have the place all to ourselves… for studying purposes of course,” I add with a beguiling grin.

Her eyes narrow suspiciously. “So we’d be all alone?”

My eyebrows rise as I step closer to her. “Why, would that bother you?” I ask in a husky, seductive voice.

“Not as long as we’re there to study,” she replies, emphasizing the last word. “Any funny business and I’m so out of there.”

I raise my hands in the air and don a naïve expression. “Hey, I’ll be on my best behavior.”

She mutters something along the lines of That’s what I’m afraid of, and shakes her head.

“I’m sorry, you’re gonna have to speak up,” I grin.

“Just meet me at my locker after last period,” she says, her voice tinged with irritation.

But I catch the twinkling in her eyes and the curl of her lips as she tries not to smile.

“I’ll be there with bells on,” I promise, tucking a silky strand of hair behind her ear. “Bye, Liz.”

I wink at her surprised face and turn on my heels to head down the hall.

I chuckle as I recall the dazed look in her eyes as my fingers brushed against her soft cheek.

Oh yeah. This is gonna be cake.

(Liz POV)

I stare after him as he walks off, my eyes inevitably drawn to his very firm and very enticing backside.

I bite my lip, contemplating what the hell I had just gotten myself into.

I actually agreed to meet Max Evans at his house… alone? Maria is gonna eat me for breakfast!

I sigh and let out a small groan as I head towards the nearest bathroom. As I walk in, I can’t help but smile at the memory of Max’s flirting.

Maybe Maria is right… he may be a playboy. But he's a damn adorable one.

I giggle at this thought and gaze at myself in the mirror as I pull a brush through my long hair. For some reason, I can’t manage to make myself feel righteously indignant at his obvious come-ons.

Maybe because I know I’ll never let him follow through on them.

No, Max and I will never be more than friends. I’m not interested in being another notch on an apparently notched up belt.

And after all, he isn’t into having a real relationship, right?

Just then, several girls come waltzing in, laughing and tossing their long golden hair.

“Oh my God… did you see what Max was wearing?” one of them asks in a longing voice. “Could he get any hotter?”

“Well, I met with him this morning and believe me… things got really heated,” another one with flowing blonde hair says, applying gloss to her lips.

“Is he as good as they say he is?” the first girl asks in an envious tone.

I try to make myself as inconspicuous as possible, although I am avidly listening to their conversation.

“Well… let’s just say that he walked out on me after we were done, and I was too satisfied to care,” she responds airily, sharing a laugh with her friends.

I grab my purse and walk out the door, the answer to my question having been received.

<center>***************************</center>

After the last bell, I walk to my locker and smirk wryly at the sight of Max leaning against it as if he owns the world.

His eyes sparkle as I approach and he scratches his head in an endearing fashion that almost makes him seem harmless.

Almost.

Snippets of the conversation I overheard in the restroom filter through my brain and I set myself against his charm as he throws me that gorgeous smile of his.

“You’re late,” he sings and I raise my eyebrows.

“I didn’t realize you were keeping time,” I respond teasingly, tossing him an amused glance as I open my locker.

“Only when it comes to you,” he throws back and I feel a sudden rush of shyness overwhelm me from his seductive tone.

I choose not to respond, concentrating instead on gathering the books I’ll need for my homework.

I notice Max cock his head out of the corner of my eye. He appears to be studying me.

I feign indifference as I feel his hot gaze sweeping over my body, lingering in certain spots.

“I see you’ve got the handle of that thing,” he nods towards my lock and I shrug.

“I’ve had all day to fool with it. Practice makes perfect, don’t you think?”

A feline smile crosses his lips and his eyes bore into mine. “Oh yes, about a great many things.”

I open my mouth to respond when I hear a familiar voice sounding down the hall.

I notice Max’s posture stiffen and glance over to see my cousin sauntering towards us.

“Max! Liz! What a… surprise,” she smiles, a little too wide for my comfort.

I look back at Max, who is glaring at Tess with an unreadable emotion.

She bats her eyes at him, unaffected, and pats me on the arm. “So, how has your day been so far, Lizzie?” she asks cheerfully, and I fight the urge to cringe.

“Um… pretty good,” I reply, forcing a smile on my face. “Everyone’s been really nice.”

“I bet they have,” Tess murmurs, smirking at Max who refuses to meet her gaze.

“Well, we have to get going, Tess,” he smiles, but I sense a bit of hostility coming from him.

Tess nods her head and her smile widens. “Sure thing. I hope you two have fun.”

She winks at Max and turns to walk off.

“What was that about?” I ask him curiously as he glares after her.

“What?” he bites off, his eyes snapping back to mine in irritation. “What was what about?”

“Um, nothing…” I frown, deciding not to push right now about his interaction with my cousin.

His eyes lose their blaze and that familiar smile is back on his lips. “So… you ready, beautiful?”

I roll my eyes, shaking my head.

And we’re back to that again.

<center>************************</center>

(Max POV)

I place my hand on the small of her back as I lead her out towards the parking lot.

My mind is currently going over the scene with Tess moments ago. That bitch has some nerve.

Could she have been any more obvious? Why not tattoo a fucking sign on her forehead?

He’s using you!!!

I growl inwardly and steer Liz towards my vehicle of choice.

“Wow… compensating for something?” she teases, staring at my huge Army surplus Jeep.

“No, just emphasizing,” I respond, wiggling my eyebrows up and down suggestively.

She laughs, the melodious sound of it warming me to the core. God, what the hell is wrong with me lately?

I must really need to get laid.

Which is exactly what I plan to do with Little Miss Good Looking here.

She isn’t even gonna know what hit her.

<center>*********************</center>

“So… nice digs you got here,” she says as we enter the spacious mansion I call home.

“Yep, not too bad at all. Especially since I don’t have to pay for any of it,” I joke, eliciting another laugh from her.

“You’re so silly,” she rolls her eyes and smacks my arm good-naturedly.

I catch her wrist before she can pull away and use it to bring her closer to me.

“And you’re indescribably beautiful,” I say in a serious voice.

Her eyes lock onto mine and I watch the emotions swimming around inside her.

A pretty blush colors her face as she averts her eyes. “I thought you were going to be good?”

I release her arm and grin. “Did I say that?”

She levels a glare at me, but her eyes are twinkling. “Yes, you did. Come on, let’s get started on this project.”

I sigh dramatically and motion for her to follow me to my bedroom. I flop onto my king sized bed and lightheartedly pat the spot next to me.

She stands in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest as she eyes the bed.

“Come on, I won’t bite… unless you want me to,” I rib her.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” she begins to back out of the door and I sit up, feeling a burst of desperation fill me as she prepares to leave.

“Liz, wait!” I call, launching up and grabbing her arm. “Look… we’ll just study, I promise.”

She doesn’t look convinced, so I sigh and hold two fingers up. “Scout’s honor.”

A small smile quirks her lips. “I don’t believe you were a Boy Scout for one second.”

I hold a hand to my heart and feign offense. “That really hurts, Liz. I’ll have you know I had the medals of honor, heroism, and merit.”

She snorts and stifles a giggle. “Right…”

“What Tale did you want to study,” I pout, smiling inside at the laughter in her eyes.

“I was thinking either the Knight’s Tale or the Wife of Bath,” she responds, apparently forgetting her anxiety over my bed as she perches on the edge.

I pretend to ponder her suggestion, then shake my head. “What about… The Miller’s Tale?”

She rolls her eyes. “Max, that one is completely raunchy! It’s basically a sleazy sex story!”

“What’s wrong with that?” I inquire innocently.

“Sex isn’t supposed to be so… ordinary,” she wrinkles her nose. “Sex should be something special between two people who love each other.”

I stare at her during her little monologue, captivated by the passion she shows on the subject.

She catches my look and flushes slightly. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I just…” I can’t even finish my sentence, I’m suddenly overwhelmed by the realization of what I’m about to do to her.

To Liz.

Wow, I’ve never actually associated a name to one of my conquests.

“I know you probably think I’m just this righteous, uptight, little virgin who wants to shove her morals on everyone else,” Liz says, looking down at the bed.

“Liz…” I begin, but she cuts me off.

“But that’s not who I am, Max.” She looks up at me and our eyes lock again in a smoldering stare. “I do believe in having sex or making love, as I prefer to call it, but I want it to be with someone that I love.”

I’m silent as she stares at me.

She smiles and rolls her eyes. “Come on, let’s just do the Cook’s Tale.”

I open my mouth, but immediately shut it, flashing a wobbly smile. “Sure thing.”

As she turns and begins pulling books out of her bag, my smile fades and I realize what I have to do.

Call Tess and tell her to go fuck herself.

<center>Part 4</center>

(Liz POV)

I laugh as Max continues reading the Cook’s Tale, using a terrible English accent.

“And bad hym go, with sorwe and with meschance! And thus this joly prentys hadde his leve,” he drones on, stumbling slightly on the Old English.

“You’re really bad at that, you know,” I tease him and he glares at me.

“I’d like to see you bloody try it!” he scoffs and I giggle again.

After admitting my virginity status, I was sure that he was going to back off and turn distant on me once he realized he had no chance of getting in my pants.

Instead, it almost seems like a sense of relief has come over him and he has been extremely flirty in a friendly sort of way.

“And hadde a wyf that heeld for contenance, A shoppe, and swyved for hir sustenance,” he finishes, shutting the book and looking over at me.

“Okay… what the hell did I just read?” he asks, giving me an adorably clueless look.

“Well… did you understand any of it?” I ask, a smile lighting my lips.

He shoots me a disbelieving look. “Don’t tell me you got any of that crap.”

I smile demurely. “Max, Canterbury Tales is a literary classic. It’s not crap.”

“Whatever, then why didn’t Chaucer finish it?” he asks, rolling his eyes.

I raise my eyebrows. “Hmm… so you did notice that it was unfinished?”

“Well, yeah! I mean, our story just sort of ends with the guy being drunk!”

“Okay, let’s just do a quick summary here,” I clap my hands together, scooting closer to him on his enormous bed.

“Is there any such thing?” he jokes, raising his brow in disbelief at my excited expression.

“Shut up! I happen to love Geoffrey Chaucer,” I say, narrowing my eyes at him teasingly.

“Hmm… lucky guy,” Max responds with a wide grin and I’m right back to blushing like the inexperienced schoolgirl I am.

Maaax…” I smile, shyly tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear.

I glance up, meeting his mesmerizing gaze as he stares at me. Everything goes still as he slowly leans over...

Briing!

The moment is broken by the shrill sound of the telephone on Max’s bedside table ringing.

He swears softly and reaches over, yanking the receiver off its handle.

“What?” he snaps in obvious irritation into the mouthpiece and I roll my eyes heavenward as I take deep breaths.

Good God. What the hell am I doing?

He was about to kiss me and I probably would have let him!

Oh, for shame!!!

I know what kind of guy he is, I heard proof of it in the girl’s restroom for God’s sake! But I can’t deny that he makes my stomach flutter in ways no guy ever has before.

“Now’s not a good time,” I hear him say into the phone and I snap my gaze towards him, disturbed by the coldness in his voice.

“I said no!” he adds, and I jump slightly at the rise in his voice.

“None of your business,” he snaps, throwing a cursory glance at me. “Look, I’ll call you later. Bye.”

He disconnects and throws the cordless across the room, not paying attention as it bounces once on the floor.

He lets out a long sigh and runs his fingers through his hair.

“Are you all right?” I question softly, curious as to who was on the other line. Who had made him so upset?

He turns towards me and his hard expression softens slightly. “Yeah… that was just…”

“An ex-girlfriend?” I joke, trying to lighten the mood.

He stiffens and turns away from me. “No. Nothing like that.”

But I can tell by the tone in his voice and his stance that he is lying. Or at least not being completely honest.

“Oh, okay…” I reply hesitantly. I swallow, suddenly feeling extremely out of place and move to grab my bag.

“Well, I better go. Don’t want to keep Grandpa and Tess waiting,” I explain, standing to leave the room.

He spins around. “No. Don’t leave. Not yet…”

I freeze at the anxious look in his eyes and frown. “Why not?”

“I… I just… let’s do something!” he says, reaching forward and grabbing my arm.

I gently retract myself from his grip and level him with a pointed stare. “Like what?”

He sighs and slaps his hand down on the desk. “You’re right. I’m sorry… I’ll take you home.”

“Max, what’s wrong?” I ask again, staring at him in concern as he begins shoveling papers into my notebook.

“I said nothing!” he replies angrily. “Look, let’s just get out of here.”

My lips press into thin lines as I watch him grab my bag and exit the room. I follow wordlessly behind him, staring at his taut form as we jump into his Jeep.

The atmosphere of this trip is very different from the easy companionship we shared earlier.

We sit in silence the whole way to my grandfather’s estate and a thousand questions run through my mind.

Finally, we pull up in front of the huge Harding mansion and Max turns the car off.

“Liz, I’m sorry about earlier,” he begins, a hint of remorse in his tone.

I stare at the floorboard, feeling the sting of tears against my eyes. “Whatever, it’s no big deal.”

“No,” he responds, reaching out to touch my arm softly. I look up and see the raw sincerity in his amber gaze. “It is. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that. You were just asking a simple question.”

“Max, we’re just friends – new ones at that. I don’t expect you to tell me every little secret you have!” I laugh dryly,

Something in his eyes darkens and he looks away. “Right. Well, for the record… I am sorry.”

I don a small smile and pat his arm awkwardly. “No biggie. Honestly.”

I pick my bookbag up and sling it over one shoulder, stepping out of the huge Jeep. “Well… I better get in. It was nice spending time with you, Max.”

A smile graces his lips and he nods. “Yeah. You, too, Liz. I guess I’ll see you later?”

“Definitely, partner,” I joke, extracting a small chuckle from him. “Um… call me whenever you want to get together.”

His eyes fly to mine and he raises his eyebrows questioningly.

I blush. “For the project, I mean.”

His lips curl slightly and he reaches out and brushes my cheek. “Bye, Liz.”

My eyes flutter closed as I feel his warm hand against my skin. A tiny shiver runs through me and I slowly open my eyes back up to stare into his emotion-filled eyes.

He offers me another smile, then turns the Jeep back on and drives off.

I stand there watching until his car rounds the corner, needing to hold onto this moment until the last possible second.

Finally, I sigh and wrap my arms around myself as I head inside.

I walk through the enormous foyer and make my way to the kitchen to find myself something to eat.

I spot Tess, who is arguing with one of the maids about something.

“I said I wanted fabric softener used on my sheets!” she snaps, waving a pillowcase in front of the contrite woman’s face. “Look at this static!”

“Very sorry, senorita Harding,” the woman bows, “Will fix ahoramismo!”

Tess glares and throws the slip of fabric at her. “Yeah, you’d better! What exactly do we pay you for, Rosa! Jesus!”

She turns to stomp off and notices me standing at the end of the hall, staring at her in disbelief.

Her icy blue eyes narrow before a giant smile lights her lips. “Lizzie! You’re back! And where have you been off to?” she asks curiously, a smug expression on her face.

“I’ve been studying with Max, Tess, you know that,” I reply coolly, turning to walk away.

Just then Grandpa Ed enters the room, smiling at us. “There you two are! Liz, I’ve been looking for you all afternoon. Where were you my dear?”

I am about to answer when Tess steps forward.

“She was studying with Max Evans, grandpa,” she says sweetly, batting her lashes.

I frown at her obvious act. “Yes, we have an english project we’re working on.”

Grandpa Ed looks at me, his eyebrows creasing. “Evans? Is he Phillip Evans’ son?”

I shrug my shoulders. “I have no idea, grandpa. I just met him today,” I plaster a smile on my lips.

Grandpa Ed smiles and wraps his arm around me. “Well, I hope you had a nice time, sweetie. And that Max better treat you right.”

I blush and bite my lip. “Grandpa, we’re not, like, dating or anything…”

“Oh, don’t be so modest, Liz!” Tess coos, shooting me another innocent smile. “Max Evans is a very sought after guy in school. Liz is very lucky.”

I glare at her, but Grandpa cuts off my response.

“Well, in my opinion, he is the lucky one! And he better remember that or else I’ll be after him. I don’t care if his father is my lawyer or not.”

With that, he ruffles my hair and gives Tess a kiss on the cheek before leaving us.

“What was that all about?” I demand, narrowing my eyes at my cousin in suspicion.

“Why, what do you mean, Liz?” she asks me, her blue eyes wide.

“Why did you insinuate to Grandpa that Max and I are a couple?” I explain, crossing my arms over my chest.

She blinks and then a smile crosses her lips. “Well… aren’t you?”

“No, Tess, we aren’t,” I say pointedly. “We’re just friends, not that it’s any of your business.”

She looks slightly taken aback, and for a moment I could swear her eyes flash. But the next second she’s back to her smiling self.

“I didn’t mean to intrude on your privacy, Lizzie,” she apologizes.

It’s Liz, not Lizzie for God’s sake.

I feel a wave of exhaustion wash over me and I stifle a yawn. “Whatever, I need to get some sleep. Goodnight, Tess.”

“Goodnight, Liz!” she calls after me and I walk out the door towards the cottage.

<center>**************************</center>

(Max POV)

As I drive back to my empty house, anger begins to build inside me as I remember the phone-call from Tess.

Damn her.

If she hadn’t called, I would have probably kissed Liz and then maybe gotten around to letting her know how I feel about her and then…

I put a stop on that train of thought as my cell phone begins to ring.

I click it on and mutter, “Evans here.”

“Fuck her yet?”

Tess.

“What the hell do you want?” I demand, my teeth gritting together.

“Chilly, chilly,” she responds silkily. “Trouble in paradise already?”

“I’m afraid I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I say in a bored voice, pulling into my driveway.

“Well then maybe that’s the problem,” she snaps, surprising me by her vehemence.

“And what is that supposed to mean?”

“It means that we have a deal and you’ve yet to deliver,” she responds in a frosty voice. “Don’t make me regret asking you, Max.”

“Whatever, Tess. Look… count me out of your deluded little scheme, all right?” I bite off.

I hear a laugh on the other side. “Oh, don’t tell me she got to you, Max. I didn’t know virgins were your style.”

“Once again, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I’m not going along with your plan. Find yourself another lapdog.”

With that, I click the phone off and walk into my house. Feeling quite satisfied, I feel my thoughts drift towards Liz.

The phone begins to ring in the kitchen, snapping me out of my daze. I race to answer it, figuring it must be my parents calling to check up on me.

Tsk, tsk… so little faith.

“Hello?”

“Don’t ever hang up on me again.”

The smile on my face freezes as I hear Tess’s voice on the other end.

“Tess… how the hell did you know I was here?” I hiss, looking over my shoulder.

“Because I know you just dropped off little miss virgin queen,” she snaps. “Don’t change the subject, Max.”

“I told you I don’t want anything to do with-“

“And I’m telling you that you will.”

The line is silent as my mind racks her last statement.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I demand in a low voice.

I can practically hear her smirk on the other end. “Did you think I didn’t notice your little… fixation on my cousin?”

My heart drops to my feet. “I don’t have a-“

“Don’t lie to me, Max. I don’t know what you see in her, but I can’t really complain, can I? It will only make this easier.”

“How so?” I grit out, gripping the phone so tightly I fear it may shatter.

“Well, if you cooperate with me, we both win. You get to fuck your little obsession’s brains out, and I get to get rid of her,” Tess drawls. “But if you don’t help me… then I may just have to let Liz in on our little deal.”

My face drains of color. “You wouldn’t dare. You wouldn’t risk going down with me.”

She giggles and it reminds me of a wild hyena. “Oh, Maxie… I wouldn’t be going anywhere. After all, we both know who has the reputation around here. Who do you think she’d believe?”

Realization dawns on me. “You’d say it was my idea.”

“Ding ding! Pretty perceptive for a pretty boy, Max.”

“I won’t let you get away with this,” I hiss, my mind racing.

“I think you know you have no choice. Now why don’t you drop this pathetic do-gooder attitude, okay?” she says in a pitying voice.

I want to cuss her out, tell her exactly what I think of her. But truthfully, I know I’m stuck. There’s no way Liz would believe me over her own cousin.

“Fine, Tess,” I respond through clenched teeth. “You win.”

“Oh… that’s the little devil I know,” she coos, sending a chill through me. “Now, I’m not the patient type, so you better hurry up and de-virginize the little nun before I decide to tell her anyway.”

Bitch.

“I can’t just rape her, Tess,” I say in a deadly calm voice. “And she says she won’t sleep with anyone unless she loves them.”

“Then you better make her fall in love with you,” Tess says and I wish I could reach through the phone and strangle her. “Come on, Max. I know you can do it.”

The doorbell rings and I am relieved to have a reason to hang up on her ass.

“I gotta go, Tess. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Fine, Max. But just remember… I’m watching you,” she says.

I shudder as I hear her hang up and the line disconnects.

Slamming the phone down, I run my fingers through my hair.

What am I supposed to do now? I like Liz, but I have no idea what Tess is capable of. Although after this conversation, I have to wonder if she’s related to Satan.

The doorbell rings again and I growl as I make my way towards the door.

I pull the door open and stare at the person before me.

“Hey, Max…”

<center>*****************</center>

“Michael? What the hell are you doing here?” I ask, rubbing my temples in frustration.

He raises his eyebrows, stepping past me to get in the house. “Sounds like someone didn’t get their daily dose of Vitamin F.”

“Very funny,” I drawl, watching as he balances two grocery bags in his hands. God, he is so frigging clumsy.

I take the bags from him and set them on the counter, not even bothering to look inside them.

I know its beer.

Michael is practically an alcoholic – it’s the one thing Model Maria hasn’t quite managed to get him out of.

“So… you given up yet on this stupid Tess deal?” he asks, wiping his hands on his pants as he regards me.

I feel a twinge of anger course through me as I recall my conversation with Tess, followed by a pang of guilt when I think if Liz.

I look away from him as I answer. “Now why would I do that?”

He shakes his head. “Max… I’m telling you, you’re gonna regret this.”

“So, how about those Kings?” I say, trying to distract him away from the topic.

The last thing I need right now is Michael’s angel act. What I need to do is figure out what the hell I’m going to do to get Liz to fall in love with me so that I can seduce her.

But first I need to figure out how to get her out of my mind before I go crazy.

As predicted, Michael makes a face and slumps into a chair. “Man, they got creamed by the Ducks. It’s those new players, I’m telling you! They let anyone play in the NHL these days.”

“Hmm… then maybe they’ll let you in,” I joke and he scowls at me.

Ha, ha, Maxwell. At least I’m not the one being led around by my dick by Tess Harding.”

I automatically tense up, then relax before he gets suspicious. “No, you’re too busy trying to get to second base with your prude girlfriend.”

“Hey, Maria’s no prude,” he smirks. “You just gotta know the right time and place and she’ll get the deed done.”

I mock gasp. “You mean… she let you put it in? I thought she was using her pussy for storage space.”

“Shut up, Max,” he rolls his eyes and a satisfied smile crosses my face.

“So, what do you think of the new girl, Liz what’s-her-name?” he asks casually, popping the cap on a bottle of beer.

“Wha… what about her?” I reply, staring at him.

“She and Maria seemed to hit it off pretty well… and I did notice you checking her out quite a bit,” he admits. “She’s really pretty.”

“Yeah…” I murmur, then shake my head. “I was just considering new avenues.”

“I don’t think you should play her, Max,” he says. “She seems like a nice girl.”

Yeah, she is.

I don’t answer, instead I stare out the window.

I wonder what she’s doing right now…

<center>Part 5</center>

(Liz POV)

The next few weeks pass by fairly quickly, full of school and work.

That’s right, I got a job.

After watching Tess squander away Grandpa’s money day after day on meaningless, trivial personal effects, I decided that I would rather suck a bull sideways than end up asking Grandpa for cash.

So I turned down his generous allowance of five-hundred dollars a week and instead began looking around Roswell for something to help me bide my time.

Shortly after, Maria informed me that her mother owned a restaurant down on Main Street, and mentioned something about them needing extra waitresses.

Well, I had to admit that food service wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but I figured I’d give it a shot before nixing the idea.

Needless to say, after setting foot into the charming café, I fell in love with it and have been working there ever since.

Maria is also employed there, although she is extensively less excited by the prospect, and also another kid from school that I have become quite close with.

His name is Alex Whitman, and he and Maria’s daily squabbles keep me laughing long into the night after closing.

Apparently, Alex’s lust for a certain blonde bombshell disgusts Maria to the point of constantly berating him on his choice of women.

Nope, it’s not Tess… thank God. Rather, my dear friend Alex is in love with none other than Isabel Evans, Max’s snobbish stepsister.

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Her Highness while studying with Max one day.

Evidently, Isabel attends an expensive all-girls Catholic school in Albuquerque and only comes home on the weekends.

Anyway, she took one look at me that day and raised one of her perfectly plucked brows at me in question.

Her only comment was, “Max must be lowering his standards since I left.”

I had to resist the urge to toss my diet coke in her made up face. Instead I smiled politely, albeit falsely, and stated that I had to leave.

Max tried to talk me into staying, but not even his adorable smile could make me want to subject myself to further judgement by the Ice Queen, as Maria so lovingly calls her.

As you can guess, I was astonished to learn that Alex liked her, but he swears there’s more to Miss Evans than meets the eye.

I hope so, for his sake.

So here I sit, wiping down the counter at Amy’s Place for the millionth time, and checking the clock hanging on the wall next to me.

It’s pretty quiet at the moment, considering the fact that there’s still a few hours till the dinner rush begins.

I hate working afternoons for this reason.

I let out a yawn as the door jingles, alerting the entrance of a customer.

I glance over at Maria, who is arguing with Alex about something – one guess what – and sigh as I realize she isn’t planning on serving our new patron.

I plaster a smile on my tired face and turn to greet whoever has stopped by.

“Hi, welcome to Amy’s Place. Would you like a table or a booth…” my standard diatribe trails off as I finally acknowledge the person before me.

“I’ll take whatever you have to offer,” his seductive voice drawls and I feel the familiar blush staining my cheeks.

“Max,” I breathe, a rush of excitement flowing through me, followed by a mental slap in the head for my obviousness.

Did I mention that Max happens to work across the street? Well, he does.

Which added absolutely no incentive for me taking this job. I swear.

I take in his tight, gray polo shirt with the Sports Authority logo imprinted on the right pocket and swallow hard.

“Wha… what can I do for you, Max?” I stammer, trying not to stare at his rippling muscles as he leans over the counter.

“I think you know,” he continues to banter playfully, his golden eyes twinkling with mischief.

I roll my eyes good-naturedly and hand him a menu. “Well, then… let me show you to your booth.”

His lips curl into a disappointed pout and I have to smile at his flirtations.

I’ve gotten to know him a lot better over the time I’ve spent in Roswell, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that he isn’t just the obnoxious playboy everyone makes him out to be.

Sure, he still flirts with me and makes outrageous comments when I least expect it, but I get the feeling that it’s more like a playful repartee for him than a ploy to get in my pants.

Which both relieves and disappoints me.

I have to admit, a part of me would love to give into Max’s efforts, to finally submit to the kind of pleasure I just know he could provide.

But then I remember exactly how many people he’s provided for, and I revert to my resolute duty of rejecting his advances.

Not that he’s made it easy.

I glance back and find his eyes trained on the sway of my hips in the little black skirt Amy makes us wear.

A trail of fire spreads over the spot he is gazing at, and I bite my lip before adding a little more hip to my step.

No, not easy at all.

Finally, we reach the corner booth that Max usually occupies when he eats at the café and he lounges lazily into the red leather cushion.

“So, do you need a few minutes or are you ready to order?” I ask, bending a knee against the table as I prop my pen to my order pad.

Max pretends to study his choices, then glances back up at me, a challenge in his sinful eyes.

“That depends… are you on the menu?”

I inhale sharply at his insinuation and then force an indifferent look on my face. “Sorry… couldn’t fit me into a doggie-bag.”

“Oh, I think you’ll fit perfectly,” he replies, his mellow voice suggesting a deeper meaning to his statement.

I blush again and nervously tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. “Can I interest you in the special?”

He tosses me a lop-sided grin. “Go ahead.”

As I explain the different options for him, I catch sight of Maria staring at us with disapproval.

She hasn’t been exactly thrilled with me and Max's burgeoning friendship.

In fact, I believe her exact words were something along the lines of, “I can’t believe you are actually talking to that no good, womanizing prick!”

Oh well.

“Can I help you?” she asks, sauntering up to the booth, her green eyes flashing with aggravation.

“Actually, could you tell Michael that he left these at my place?” Max answers smoothly, dropping a pack of Energizer batteries on the table.

Maria’s eyes narrow and she spares Max an evil glare before stalking away in a huff.

I glance at Max and see barely restrained amusement in his amber eyes.

“What was that about?” I raise my eyebrows as I hear Maria clanging around in the backroom.

Max shrugs, a smile tugging at the corners of his luscious lips. “I have no idea.”

I sense there’s more going on than he’s saying, but decide to let it go. “So… have you decided?”

“That depends,” he answers, tapping his cheek thoughtfully.

“On what?”

“On whether or not you’ll go out with me tonight,” he finishes slyly.

I stare at him for a moment, then laugh. “Very funny, Max. Come on, what do you want?”

He sets the menu aside and looks at me straight on. “I want you to do something with me. Tonight.”

I study his eyes for any hint of teasing, and find none. “You’re serious?”

“As a heart attack,” he quips. “Come on… just go somewhere with me. I promise to return you in good condition.”

I snort at him, then bite my lip in contemplation.

He continues to watch me as I fight an internal battle.

On the one hand, it’s not like Max and I haven’t hung out before. In fact, we hang out quite a bit.

On the other, he’s been acting extremely playful today and I get the feeling that this isn’t a normal let’s-get-together-and-chill kind of engagement.

Please?” he bats his eyes at me and I feel myself melting.

“Fine,” I sigh and smile at him. “What time are you picking me up?”

“When do you get off?”

I check the clock again. “In about three hours.”

“Okay, I get off in an hour. How about I come by around then?” he queries.

“You’ll have to wait around for two hours!” I protest, but he shrugs.

“So, I’ve been needing to catch up on some reading,” he responds and I nod in agreement.

“Okay, I’ll see you then.”

He smiles a bright smile, betraying the smoldering heat in his eyes. “Later, beautiful.”

With that, he shoots me a wink and stands to leave.

I stare after him as he reaches the door, turning back and smiling at me once more before disappearing.

“What did he want?” Maria hisses as she comes to stand beside me.

“Huh?” I ask absently, still staring at the door. “Oh, he wanted to get together later.”

What?!” Maria shrieks, and the few people eating turn to stare at her. “Are you crazy?”

“Maria, chill,” I reply calmly, moving to collect a dirty plate from a nearby table. “Max and I are friends and friends hang out.”

She snorts incredulously. “Liz, are you blind? That boy is just itching to get his paws on you! Have you heard nothing I’ve said?”

“It’s kind of hard not to when you’re shoving it down my throat twenty four seven!” I retort.

Maria breathes deeply then sighs. “I’m sorry, but I know how he is! You’ve only known him a few weeks, Liz. I’ve known him since kindergarten! There is no way Max Evans isn’t expecting something from you.”

“Maybe he is,” I concede mildly. “But that doesn’t mean he’s going to get it.”

She stares at me and doesn’t reply.

“Look, Maria. I’ve heard all this before, all right? I am well aware of Max’s player tendencies. But I also know that I’m not going to give anyone something they don’t deserve. So stop worrying,” I continue, trying to placate her.

“I still think you should cancel,” she folds her arms defiantly, then walks off without another word.

I sigh and pick up another plate.

(Max POV)

As I enter the café doors for the second time today, my eyes automatically search for her dark brown locks.

I spot her standing by the milkshake machine, laughing with that lanky brown haired kid from school.

Her eyes twinkle and the delighted sound of her laughter resonates through the small café.

Something wrenches through me as I watch her place her hand on his arm, leaning in close to whisper something in his ear.

I see red.

I begin to stalk towards them when a pair of arms wraps around my waist.

“Hey, lover,” a seductive voice purrs into my ear.

I turn around to find a somewhat familiar blonde smiling at me. I raise my eyebrows in question.

“What’s up?” I ask, my eyes drifting back towards Liz, who has caught sight of me.

She looks away as soon as our eyes meet and I quickly extract myself from this girl’s grip.

“You tell me,” she replies, sliding a hand down my stomach. I catch her wrist just before her palm slithers down my fly.

“Sorry, but I’m busy,” I smile, my eyes emotionless as I glance back over at Liz.

She's wiping down the counter, sneaking peeks in my direction.

“Too busy for me?” she responds silkily, leaning forward to place a kiss on my lips.

I step back and shake my head. “Actually… yes.”

She looks taken aback and slinks back to her booth, shooting me disappointed looks as she joins her friends.

I sigh and turn back around.

“Turning down a night with Candice Martin?”

I smile down at Liz and quirk an eyebrow. “For you? Of course.”

She rolls her eyes and looks away. “She’s practically eating you alive with her eyes.”

I glance over and sure enough, Candice’s eyes are raking over my body. I turn back to Liz. “Hmm… are you jealous?”

I meant for it to come out teasing, but there was a hopeful note that I hope she didn’t catch.

“You wish, Max,” she laughs, then unties her apron. “So, are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

I watch as she removes the white garment, revealing more of the tight blouse and short skirt that she wears as a uniform.

God bless Amy DeLuca.

“Oh, no… it’s a secret,” I reply absently as I lick my lips at her beautiful form.

“I hate secrets,” she whines and I smile at her pouting face.

“Come on… this will be fun.”

“It better be. I’m giving up a night of hearing Alex and Maria bicker for this,” she replies playfully.

I tense again. “Yeah… who’s that Alex kid, anyway?”

“He’s…” her voice fades and she stares at me knowingly. “Ooh… who’s jealous now?”

I grin and shake my head. “You’re so cute, you know that?”

She flicks her apron at me and turns to leave. “I gotta change, meet you in ten?”

“Sure,” I call after her. “Wouldn’t miss it,” I breathe softly as she heads to the back room.

I shove my hands in my pockets as I wait for her to return. My cell phone rings and I pull it out my back pocket.

“Yeah.”

“How’s everything going, Max?”

I bite my lip to keep from spewing crude words to her. “Everything’s just fine, Tess,” I grit out.

“And my cousin? Is she with you?” she continues.

“Yes,” I snap. “I’m picking her up at the café right now, okay? Are you happy now?”

“No, Max. I won’t be happy until you fulfill your end of the deal,” she snaps back. “So… when are you planning on sticking it to her?”

“It’s not that simple, Tess,” I rub my temples in irritation.

“Why not? You’ve been spending every waking minute with her! You’re telling me that she still hasn’t given it up?” she whines in amazement.

“She’s a little different from you, Tess,” I mock her. “She is actually sweet and pure and has morals.”

“Oh, please Max,” she laughs. “Don’t act like you aren’t the same way I am. Do you even remember how many girls you’ve fucked?”

I stiffen, but can’t dispute she’s right. “Like I said… she’s not just going to give it up. I have to get her to trust me first.”

“Well, you better get on with it,” she replies. “I’m really starting to get tired of watching Ed dote on her like she’s frigging Mother Mary.”

“Whatever, listen I have to go,” I respond acidly, spotting Liz walking out the doors. “Don’t call me again.”

“Fuck her, Max,” she says in a low voice. “Or else I’ll fuck you.”

I snap my phone closed in disgust and run a hand through my hair.

“Hey, you ready?” she smiles at me happily, and I turn to look at her.

My breath leaves me as I take in her appearance.

She’s wearing a cute little yellow sundress that perfectly accentuates her tan and the curves of her figure.

The call from Tess momentarily forgotten, I nod and flash her a smile. “You look absolutely gorgeous.”

She rolls her eyes, but I detect a faint flush around her cheeks. “Yeah, yeah Don Juan. Let’s get out of here.”

I offer my arm and she hesitates momentarily before placing a light hand on my elbow.

<center>Part 6 </center>

(Liz POV)

I frown in distaste as the radio rapper begins spewing out crude lyrics and fold my arms over my chest.

“You want to change the station?” Max asks me as he turns the steering wheel to the left.

I glance over at him and see the knowing smile on his lips. “As a matter a fact, I would,” I say, leaning forward and twisting the dial.

Country, blah. Some kind of classical music… no.

The next station is playing soft, melodic guitar music. I smile and sit back in my seat, content with the new music.

“He’s good,” Max nods in satisfaction as Ben Harper’s sexy voice drifts through the speakers.

“Yeah, I saw him once in Seattle,” I respond. “He’s really great live. Really gives a lot to the fans.”

Max nods, braking the Jeep to a stop at a red light. “Yeah, him and Dave Matthews came to a festival here a few years ago and did a rendition of Roses From My Friends. It was awesome.”

I smile at him. “I wish I’d been here for that.”

He looks over at me and our eyes lock. “Me too.”

We continue our staring match until a horn honks behind us, signaling the green light. I flush slightly, embarrassed to have gotten caught up this early on.

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

“So, where are we going?” I ask again, shifting uncomfortably in my seat.

“I’m not telling,” Max quips. “You’ll just have to wait and find out.”

“This is so not fair, you know,” I mutter mutinously . “You have to tell me!”

His lips curl, but he doesn’t answer.

I stare at him for a minute, then huff. “Do I at least get a hint?”

He glances at me again and finally sighs. “Fine, jeez! You are so difficult sometimes, you know that?”

“Where are we going?” I ask smugly, letting his comment go since I won.

“Oh no, you only get a hint,” he laughs and my mouth drops open to protest.

Maaax! Come on!”

He shakes his head resolutely. “Do you want the hint or not?”

I stick out my tongue and slump lower into my seat. “Yes.”

“All right,” he smiles, a satisfied expression curving his lips. “It’s something long, hard and you can get kind of wet if you’re not careful.”

My eyes practically bug out at his husky voice. “What?!”

He breaks out into laughter at my distress and I glare at him as he pulls off onto the side of the road.

I look around and notice sign a few feet away.

Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

“What are we doing here?” I ask in confusion.

Max hops out the Jeep and begins shifting through the back seat. “We’re going rowing.”

“Rowing?” I ask, stepping out and wrapping my arms around myself. “As in, row, row, row your boat?”

“Yep,” Max sings happily. “Wear this.”

He tosses me a life jacket and I catch it against my chest. “Max, are you serious?” I ask, staring at the garment uncertainly.

“Yeah, I want to show you something,” he says, slipping on a similar preserver and flashing me a huge smile.

“But I’ve never been… rowing,” I explain hesitantly.

“Don’t worry, I’m excellent with my hands,” he cracks, his friendly smile taking a turn towards seductive. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

I swallow at his words and try miserably to throw him an annoyed glare. “But… I’m definitely not dressed for it.”

“You’re dressed fine,” he assures me and I bite my lip in skepticism. “Come on, Liz. Please? For me?”

He bats his eyes and it reminds me of a little puppy.

“That’s low,” I grumble, relenting and shrugging on the lifejacket.

His smile broadens and he pulls out a few more things from the car before taking my hand.

<center>****************************</center>

“Oh my God! This is beautiful!” I gasp, taking in the breathtaking surroundings.

Rolling hills enfold us, tall pines dispersed across the fertile soil. The huge lake gleams in the moonlight, the glassy surface broken only by the ripples caused by our small canoe.

The black sky casts its reflection against the water, making me feel as though we’re alone in some sort of cosmic vicinity.

“My father used to bring Isabel and me here when we were kids,” Max replies, offering me a smile.

“That’s sweet,” I smile in return, picturing a younger, more innocent Max traipsing and splashing around in the cool depths. “When was the last time you all came?”

“It’s been awhile,” he answers quietly, an unrecognizable emotion clouding his eyes.

We sit in silence as I contemplate his words. For some reason, I decide not to pursue the comment.

“So, I can’t believe something like this exists out here in all this desert,” I say, throwing my head back as I gaze at the starry night sky.

“I know… it’s like our own little oasis.”

I glance at his rippling biceps as he fluidly continues pulling the paddles through the water.

He grunts softly from the exertion, but his movements remain strong.

“So, how did you get into rowing?” I ask, trying to rid the mental picture of Max grunting under different circumstances from my naughty brain. “It’s definitely an interesting sport.”

“Actually, I used to want to be a swimmer,” Max admits, stopping his actions for a moment to wipe his brow.

Great. Now the image of him wearing one of those damn Speedo’s is indelibly imprinted in my mind. Oh Jeez.

“Really?” I force out through my suddenly dry throat. “What changed your mind?”

“I don’t know… it’s not a real popular sport around here, you know?” he responds, looking up at the sky.

“And rowing is?” I tease, stretching my legs as I throw him a smile.

“No, not really,” he chuckles and I giggle. “But it’s really relaxing. Swimming is great and all… but there are a lot of things you have to give up if you want to be good. I guess I just didn’t have what it took.”

“Or maybe you weren’t as interested as you thought you were,” I offer, reaching down and swirling my fingers through the silky coolness.

“Maybe,” he muses.

We sit in comfortable silence, each deep in our own thoughts as we listen to the soft splashing of the oars and the singing of the nocturnal birds.

“So… can I ask you a question?” I ask suddenly, chewing my lip curiously.

“Shoot,” he quips, his eyes trained on some point in the distance.

“Why do you have a job?”

He turns to look at me in confusion and I blush slightly at my statement.

“I mean, why do you work? Your family is really wealthy, right?” I clarify, watching him inquisitively.

“Yeah…” he says, letting a sigh escape his lips. “I guess… I just get bored sometimes, you know? I figure I gotta do something with my time.”

A smile flutters over my face at his honest words. I can’t resist ribbing him. “The West Roswell girls not cutting it for you anymore?”

His light gaze darkens, and he looks away.

I realize that I might have offended him and lean forward, placing my hand against his arm. “Max…”

He glances at me and gives a small smile. “I guess I had that one coming.”

I frown, wanting to erase the hurt my comment inflicted. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean-“

“Liz, it’s okay!” he laughs, sliding his fingers through mine still against his arm. “But for the record, there’s only one girl cutting it for me right now.”

Our eyes meet and my heart begins to pound at the adoring look in his glittering orbs.

“Is that so?” I ask flirtatiously, a smile lighting my lips. “And do I know this girl?”

“I’d say pretty well,” he teases back, rubbing the top of my hand with his thumb.

“And what would she say to you being out here in this canoe with little ol' me?” I raise my eyebrows, a sly smile curving my lips.

Max laughs, the sound deep and husky in the sultry night air. “I think she’d say…”

I lean forward, anxious to hear his statement. He surprises me by jumping up, causing the small craft to wobble back and forth.

“Let’s swim!” he suggests, already peeling his shirt over his head.

“What?” I ask, momentarily rendered dumb by the sight of his impressive physique. “What are you doing?”

“It’s hot out here, I’m simply going to cool off,” he smiles impishly, tossing his shirt in the front of the boat. “You coming?”

I stare at him, my mouth hanging open as he begins undoing his jeans. Alarms start sounding in my head, and I struggle to find my breath. “Max… we can’t go swimming!”

“Why not?” he asks, skating the zipper down his fly teasingly and my eyes zero in on the suddenly visible strap of his boxers.

“Be… because!” I stammer, my cheeks flushing as he slides the pants down his hips. “Max! We can’t do this!”

I all but hiss this last statement as he shoots me a playful grin.

“Why Miss Parker… you’re not afraid to get your feet wet, are you?” he drawls, a sexy smile on his dangerous lips.

I shoot him a shaky glare, to which he responds by tossing his jeans at me.

“Max!” I cry, catching the garment and staring at it in disbelief.

“Come on, Liz. You know you’re hot. The water will feel really good,” he solicits, his voice husky with challenge.

I swallow, glancing up at him and I know at that moment I must be drooling.

Max stands before me, his hands on his hips, clad only in a pair of tight black boxer-briefs.

My eyes begin at his powerfully built chest, trailing down over his rippling abdomen, and further down to his muscular thighs…

Yikes!

So he’s packing quite a bit, there. Big surprise. With an ego like his, he could probably pitch a tent big enough to house an entire army...

“Ahem.”

My eyes snap up in mortification, and he raises his eyebrows at me knowingly.

I bite my lip, turning away as I plead for my burning face to cool down.

A loud splash causes my attention to shift.

A look down and see Max shaking the water out his hair, tiny droplets flying.

The action causes his short hair to stick up every which way, lending an incredibly adorable air to his sexy demeanor.

“So… what are you waiting for?” he asks me, treading water expertly.

I shake my head, letting out a small laugh. “No way. There is no way I’m getting in there with you!”

He is silent for a moment, then shrugs. “All right. But I have to warn you, you’re a sitting duck in that boat.”

He thumbs in my direction and I feel the hair on my neck start to stand on end.

“What are you talking about?” I demand.

He shrugs again, laying on his back and swimming lazy circles around the small canoe.

Max?!”

“It’s just that… well, we’re not exactly supposed to be here right now,” he admits, and my eyes widen as he continues, “and I’m not sure what the Rangers would do if they caught us.”

“You’re not sure?” I repeat incredulously.

“But if you’re in the water with me, they won’t be able to see you,” he adds. “Trust me, Michael and I have snuck out here plenty of times.”

My eyes narrow at him. “Then we can just go back,” I grit out, debating whether or not I should wring his neck or kiss him senseless.

Jeez, does he have to be so damn adorable?

“Of course we can,” he smiles, and I begin to relax slightly.

“Good.”

“But not until you go swimming with me.”

“Max!” I cry in exasperation. “I am not going swimming with you! End of story, finite!”

“Why not?” he pouts. “Are you scared of me?”

“No!” I say in frustration. “I just…”

“What?” he prods, holding onto the side of the boat, gazing up at me with his golden eyes.

“I don’t have a suit,” I grit out.

“Are you wearing underwear?” he asks, and my face turns redder.

“What!”

“Cause if you are,” he continues smoothly, “then what’s the difference? It covers the same as a bathing suit anyway.”

“What if I’m wearing a thong?” I snap. “Or what if I’m not wearing anything at all?”

His eyes darken and he leans closer. “Are you?” he questions, smiling sexily.

“Yes,” I sigh. He looks momentarily disaapointed, then the daring smile is back. “You are insane.”

“Come on, I promise I won’t do anything you don’t want me to do,” he placates, and I begin to waver.

“I don’t know…”

“Don’t make me do the puppy-dog eyes again, Liz,” he jokes and I roll my eyes.

“Fine. God, talk about being difficult! But you just remember to be a gentleman!” I shake my finger at him.

“Yes ma’am,” he smiles happily, patting the side of the boat happily.

I bite my lip, wondering if I’m going crazy for agreeing to this.

Max stares at me expectantly and I finally sigh and squeeze my eyes shut, pulling my dress over my shoulders quickly.

The warm air caresses my scantily clad body and I hear a sharp intake of breath.

I open my eyes and glance down.

Max is staring at me openly, appreciation gleaming in his hot gaze.

Wow…” he murmurs almost inaudibly, but I hear it anyway. Suddenly, I realize I could have some fun with this.

“Will these work?” I flutter my eyelashes, gesturing towards my lacy purple bra and panties combination.

“Wha… what?” he stutters, drawing his eyes up to meet my smirking gaze.

“Down boy,” I crack, and dive perfectly off the side of the boat, surfacing next to him.

The cool water does feel nice against my nearly nude form, and I brush my hair back from my face.

“So, you and Michael come out here?” I ask, watching as Max circles around me, almost predatorily.

“Mm hmm,” he mumbles, biting his lower lip as he stares at me with smoldering eyes.

I take a deep breath and begin swimming backwards as he comes closer. “And you guys go swimming?”

“Yep,” he replies, forcing me up against the side of the boat with his advances.

“Have you ever brought anyone else out here?” I breathe, my insides heating up as he practically eats me alive.

“Nope,” he murmurs, and I feel my back pressing up against the hard surface.

I reach my arms up and hook them over the side. “Why… why did you bring me then?”

I hold my breath as he places an arm on either side of me, his amber eyes glittering.

“Because I wanted to,” he whispers, his breath skimming across my lips.

I lick them unconsciously, and his eyes flash as a small groan sounds from his throat.

“Max…” I breathe, and then his lips are on mine.

I whimper as his hot mouth covers mine, sucking my bottom lip between his own.

My arms fall down to wrap around his neck as I unconsciously pull him closer.

He groans again, pulling me closer against him, as he slides his tongue inside my mouth.

Our tongues duel for supremacy, as our bodies writhe and rub against each other.

“God, Liz…” he hisses as my bare stomach comes into contact with his rapidly growing arousal.

A gasp escapes me as I feel his hard length pressed up against me. “Max…?”

“I want you,” he pants, then takes my mouth again, pressing our lips together roughly.

<center>Part 7</center>

(Max POV)

God, she’s so responsive to my touch. My hands roam down the skin of her sides, brushing against her hips.

If it’s like this just kissing her, I wonder what it will be like if we do have sex.

The thought causes my already straining erection to harden more. She unknowingly rubs against me and I inhale sharply.

A million different thoughts are running through my mind, most of all I can’t believe this is finally happening.

Dear God… I don’t think I’ve ever felt this hot in my life. I’m so turned on right now I could probably come if I simply heard her voice.

I lean forward to capture her lips again, my hands inching their way towards her perky breasts.

Suddenly, I feel coolness surrounding me and I take an automatic breath as my head is dunked beneath the water.

When I resurface I sputter, wiping my eyes. I find Liz staring at me nervously, her face flushed.

“What did you do that for?” I ask, half-annoyed and still majorly turned on.

“You needed to cool off,” she states simply, chewing on her lower lip. “That was way too fast.”

I hardly register her words, my eyes focusing in on her tongue as she slides it across her swollen lips.

A groan rises in my throat and I continue to stare at her, breathing harshly.

“I… we shouldn’t have done that,” she whispers, raising her eyes to meet mine.

“We shouldn’t,” I echo, slinking closer to her. “Why not?”

She holds a hand up to stop my onset “Why not? Max… this is insane! I don’t know what you were expecting, but I’m not just another girl for you to play around with!”

Her words are full of vehemence and I momentarily feel a pang of hurt. “Is that what you think?” I demand, my eyes narrowing.

She stares back at me, unfazed. “What do you expect me to think? You bring me out to this secluded lake… start stripping and begging me to swim with you. Then you pull that stunt…”

“Stunt?” I raise my eyebrows. “Since when is kissing a stunt?”

She sighs, turning away. “Max, I like you…”

“Then what’s the matter?” I challenge incredulously, inching closer to her. “I like you, too. If we both like each other… why can’t we be together?”

“It’s not that simple,” she begins, but I cut her off with a light kiss.

I manage to surprise her long enough to slip my tongue in her mouth, wrapping my arms around her.

She yields for a second, then pushes me away. “What are you doing?”

“Don’t tell me you didn’t feel anything,” I say, hovering over her. “I know you did.”

“It doesn’t matter what I feel, Max!” she cries, escaping my hold as she turns to glare at me. “You and me… we’re just not compatible.”

I stare at her incredulously. “What are you talking about? Liz…”

“No! I’m not interested in being another one of your menial conquests!” she fumes.

I reel back, glaring at her. “You’re throwing that back in my face?”

“Well, shouldn’t I?” she replies angrily. “How am I supposed to know this isn’t just some stupid joke to you?”

I remain quiet for a moment, wondering if the shock on my face gives anything away.

To be honest, I haven’t thought about Tess or that damn deal of hers all night. But now Liz’s words have brought a wave of realization over me.

She’s right.

I am using her.

She sighs at my silence and rubs the bridge of her nose. “Max, I do like you. But I… I don’t trust myself with you.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I ask hoarsely, feeling as though someone has slammed an 18-wheeler into my chest.

“It means that I don’t trust you not to hurt me,” she replies quietly, then she jumps into the canoe, pulling her dress over her head.

I stare at her for a moment, watching as she rakes a hand through her wet hair.

My emotions churn around inside of me – desire, frustration, guilt, need…

Why do I feel so damned worked over by this girl? God knows there are enough women at my beck and call.

Granted, I haven’t been beckoning or calling upon any of them since I met her, but still. What makes this girl so much better than all the others?

Why does everything seem to light up when she walks in the room and gives me that gorgeously innocent smile of hers?

Why do I feel this intense need to be with her – not even sexually, per say – just near her?

To breathe the same air as she does.

To make her laugh.

“We should get going,” her soft voice flutters down to me and in that instant, realization dawns on me, bright and overpowering, all consuming.

I’m in love with Liz Parker.

(Liz POV)

Max is silent the entire way home, probably busy licking his wounded ego.

I want to scream at him, ask him if he thought I was that easy that I would give it up to him on a first date, if you can call it that.

I remember the girls in the restroom and snort.

Yeah, he probably did.

Well, too bad for you, Max Evans. You’re gonna have to try a lot more than a romantic moonlit dip to get into this virgin’s panties.

The Jeep comes to a stop in front of my Grandfather’s house, and he switches off the ignition.

As he turns to look at me, I keep my hands clasped in my lap, staring out the window.

“Liz.”

He speaks my name so softly that I almost believe I’m imagining it.

I glance over and find myself staring straight into his mesmerizing eyes.

“Yes, Max?” I whisper, unable to look away from his intense gaze. I feel like I should probably be running for the hills, but there’s a reverence about him that I’ve never seen before, and it keeps me awaiting his response.

“I…” he begins, looking down and frowning. He sighs and peeks back up at me. “I’m sorry… about earlier. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable…”

I feel my icy walls melting at his earnest expression and my shoulders slump.

“I just wanted you to have a good time,” he continues, playing with a gum wrapper on the dashboard. “I guess I was out of line.”

I sigh, shaking my head. How can you resist those damn eyes?! “It’s all right, Max,” I reply, tucking my damp hair behind my ear. “I actually did have a good time, well, up until the end.”

He gives me a wry smile. “Am I that bad of a kisser?”

I roll my eyes, but inwardly I’m grateful for his attempt to lighten the mood. “I don’t kiss and tell,” I reply dryly.

He laughs quietly, and then we sit in silence again. He begins fidgeting in his seat and I hold my breath, waiting for him to say whatever’s apparently on his mind.

“Listen, I know what you said,” he begins, raising his eyebrows and staring at the wheel. “About us not being compatible? But I was wondering… if maybe I can see you again?”

I stare at him in surprise, my lips forming an instant protest.

“I just really want to get to know you,” he adds softly and just like that, my walls are a puddle on the floor.

But I don’t have to let him know how he makes me feel. “Max, I don’t know…”

“Please,” he looks up at me, his incredible eyes pleading shamelessly without words. “I promise, Liz… I won’t try anything funny. I just, I really like you.”

I sit quietly for a moment, weighing the pros and cons of agreeing to his proposal.

After all, I really do like Max and I would like to get to know him better. The thing is, I’m just not sure if I can forget about all the girls he’s been with or his reputation.

How am I supposed to know whether or not he really likes me or if he’s just looking for the next warm body to lose himself in?

But as our eyes meet again and I notice the anxiety swirling in him, I decide the only way to find out, is to give him a chance.

“Maybe,” I reply finally, giving him a small smile.

His eyes brighten and he flashes me a devastatingly adorable grin. “Really? You mean you’ll give us… me… a chance?”

I bite my lip. “I’ll think about it, Max. There’s a lot of things we need to talk about and even more that we have to deal with… but I can promise you I will seriously consider it.”

He nods, looking down at the carpet before raising his head again. When he looks at me again, his eyes are twinkling. “So… can I call you sometime?”

A smile spreads over my face and I nod. “Yeah… yeah, you can definitely do that.”

“All right,” he quirks his lip in a half-smile. “Well, I had a great time tonight, Liz.”

“So did I, Max,” I reply honestly. Then on a whim, I lean over and place a kiss on his cheek.

He turns to look at me in surprise and I just smile.

“Goodnight, Max,” I whisper, opening the door to head to the house.

“Goodnight, Liz,” he echoes, his gaze following me as I began walking.

When I get to the door, I turn to wave and see him smiling stupidly at the steering wheel.

A warm feeling flows through me as I watch him expel a breath and fall back against the seat, his hand against his heart.

<center>********************</center>

(Max POV)

So it’s been two weeks, six hours and forty-seven minutes since Liz decided to give me a chance.

What? I’m not counting or anything…

Anyway, I’ve been working overtime trying to prove to her that she’s the only one I’m interested in, while at the same time dealing with my fan club constantly making her doubt my efforts of making her feel like she’s the only one I’m interested in.

Sound confusing? Well, it’s nothing compared to what I’ve been dutifully ignoring these past few weeks.

My idiotic deal with Tess.

That’s right, I’ve gone out my way to avoid her, not wanting to deal with whatever underhanded tactic she’s planning to use on me to keep me in line.

But it looks as if my luck has just run out, as I spot her heading towards me, an intent look gleaming in her icy eyes.

I quickly duck behind a shelf of basketballs and pray to whatever God is listening for her to just walk on past me.

Sad, huh?

But of course, she immediately spots me and makes her way in my direction, her spiky heels clicking across the floor.

“What the hell are you doing?” she demands, folding her arms across her chest as she raises an eyebrow.

I stand up, plastering a fake smile on my face. “Tess! What a surprise, can I help you find anything?”

“Don’t play stupid with me, Max. It’s not your style,” she snaps and I feel like smacking that triumphant look off her face.

“Why, whatever do you mean, Tessa?” I blink innocently, making a show of dusting off my work-clothes and sending her a beguiling smile.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” she states, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. “Want to tell me why?”

Because you’re a skanky ho and I don’t want to catch whatever venereal disease you may have come into contact with.

Outwardly, I simply broaden my smile, raising my eyebrows. “I’m not avoiding you. I’ve just been… busy.”

At this, she visibly relaxes, a smug smile sliding across her features. “So I’ve noticed. And how are things going with my dear little cousin?”

I stiffen slightly, but manage to keep my smile intact. “Everything’s fine.”

She continues to stare at me, obviously waiting for something else. Finally she snaps, “Well?”

“What?”

“Don’t fuck around with me, Max!” she glowers. “Have you done your part, yet? Or do I need to get someone else to do what you obviously are having such a hard time accomplishing?”

I bite my lip, the thought of Liz with anyone else making me see red. “No, Tess. I have everything under control,” I grit out, clenching my fists in an effort to restrain myself from throttling her.

“Good,” she preens, batting her eyes at me before sending me an icy glare. “I would hate to have to tell little Lizzie that her charming prince was really using her for a good roll in the hay.”

I smile again, my lips pressed into a thin line. “Right.”

A thought strikes me. If I play my cards right, I can make Tess believe I’m helping her while at the same time getting the dirt on her so that I can protect Liz.

It’s a shot in the dark, but it just might work.

I smile a little brighter, adding a hint of flirtation as I lick my lips slowly. “So… what have you been up to, Tess?” I ask, leaning against the wall causally.

She looks slightly taken aback at my abrupt change in demeanor, then the slut I know slips into her role and she purses her lips together playfully.

“Lots of things,” she responds seductively. “Namely what I’m going to do to you when you finally pop my cousin’s cherry.”

I smile back lazily, although inside I’m gagging. “Hmm… well, I hope you’re planning on waiting around for me.”

“What do you mean?” she asks, her smile faltering in confusion.

I trail a finger down her arm, watching as she shivers in pleasure. “I want you to stay dry until I come for you. Can you do that for me, Tess?”

The smile drops from her face and is replaced by an incredulous expression. “Get real, Max. Nothing and nobody gets between me and a good fuck.”

With that, she turns and stalks out the store.

I smile after her, her words playing over in my head.

Oh yes, Princess. That’s exactly what I’m planning on…

<center>Part 8</center>

(Liz POV)

“That asshole is staring at you again.”

The sound of Maria’s annoyed voice permeates my daze of cleaning the milkshake machine. I look up and sure enough, find myself gazing into a pool of warm amber.

A slight smile drifts upon my lips as I watch him smile back and look down, almost as if he’s embarrassed to be caught.

“What’s going on with you two?” Maria demands, tossing her rag on the counter and leaning over to regard me.

“What do you mean?” I ask casually, but a smile tugs at the corners of my lips.

“I mean, why is Max Evans in here every night you work… just sitting there and… drooling for God’s sake,” she rambles in a disgust, “and why are you floating around like you’re stuffed with helium?”

I laugh at Maria’s description and turn back to tend to the milkshake machine. “Maria, get a grip. There’s… nothing going on with Max and I.”

“Uh huh… I heard the hesitation there, chica,” she drawls wryly. Then her eyes narrow and she purses her lips. “Oh my God! He’s gotten to you, hasn’t he!”

She begins mumbling in Spanish and sniffing a small vial of… well, I’m not really sure I want to know.

Maria!” I exclaim, reaching over and shaking her by the shoulders. “Slow down! I can’t understand a single word you’re saying!”

“…selfish sonofabitch!” she ends in English, glaring at Max who simply sticks out his tongue, infuriating her even more.

Wow. Reeeal mature, guys.

“I guess you haven’t quite mastered the Maria Filter yet, huh Liz?” Alex teases as he walks by with a plate of steaming food.

“Liz, please tell me that I am wrong and that you and Max aren’t… like…” Maria wrinkles her nose and I press my fingers to my temples.

“Maria, I’m going to say this with love, but keep your big fat nose out of this!” I cry, feeling about ready to strangle my friend.

Her eyes widen and she pouts slightly before slumping into one of the bar stools. “Noted. Man!”

I bite my lip, feeling bad as I watch her sulk at the counter. Finally I sigh and lean over her.

“Promise you won’t flip out?”

“Hey, this is me we’re talking about here!” she says defensively and I have to hold back a snort.

I glance around and see everyone busy with their own things. I look back at Maria and whisper, “Well, don’t tell anyone but… I’m pregant with Max’s love child and we’re planning on eloping to Vegas as soon as Christmas break starts.”

What?!” she screeches, and the entire café spins around to stare at us.

She begins muttering to herself and sniffing the vial at warp speed.

“Maria! I’m just joking, you know, ha ha!” I say, my mouth dropping as she begins stalking towards Max with a wild look in her verdant eyes.

She stops and turns back to look at me. “You are?”

“Um… yeah!” I roll my eyes as she continues to stare at me in suspicion.

“Oh, man!” Alex chuckles as he comes to stand next to us. “That was classic, Parker! I thought she was gonna inhale that cedar oil!”

Maria glares at him, then turns it on me. “That was wrong on so many levels, chica!”

I hold up my hands, “Hey, I can’t believe you actually thought it was true!”

“Well, how am I supposed to know!” she snaps, her face turning a deep shade of red. “You two have been spending a lot of time together after all.”

“We’re friends, Maria,” I remind her, wiping an invisible spot on the polished counter top. “That’s what friends do.”

Alex and Maria share a doubtful look and then glance back at me.

I begin to get uncomfortable under their scrutinizing stare, and finally bend. “All right! So… maybe we’re more than… friends. Are you happy now?”

“How much more?” Maria automatically demands and I shoot her a death glare.

“That’s none of your business,” I say, giving her a warning look. She opens her lips again to speak, but Alex claps a hand over her mouth.

“Of course, Liz,” he smiles, holding a squirming Maria under his hands. “We would never dream of interfering in your personal business, would we, Maria?”

She glares at him and pulls away. “I guess not,” she mumbles crossly. “But if that prick tries anything…”

“I’ll beat the living shit out of him,” Alex finishes, cracking his knuckles and mocking an attack posture.

Maria and I crack up.

“What?” Alex asks defensively, dropping his hands to his hips.

“Oh my God… I’m so scared!” Maria gasps, clutching her heart with her hands. “Alex is on the rampage!”

“Yeah, I better go warn Max!” I laugh, wiping invisible tears from my eyes. “He needs to know what he’s up against!”

Alex glares at us. “Fine, laugh if you want. But I happen to be an expert at Tae Bo.”

Maria and I look at each other and crack up again.

Alex mumbles something under his breath and stalks off as we slump against the counter, wheezing and trying to catch our breaths.

After a few minutes, we sober up and Maria glances over at me.

“You know, I’m not trying to tell you what to do,” she says uncertainly. “I just… I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

A small smile lights my face. “I know. And you’re right. He does have a sketchy rep and all.”

She raises an eyebrow. “So, why are you hanging out with him? If you don’t mind me asking. Seriously.”

I take a deep breath, glancing over to where Max is greeting Michael who just entered the restaurant. “I don’t know… there’s something about him. I mean, I know all that stuff he’s done, or at least I have a vague idea… but when he’s around and he’s smiling at me, it’s like…”

“None of it matters?” she ends knowingly, letting out a long sigh.

I look over at her in surprise. “Yeah. How did you know?”

She stares down at her hands, a wry smile curling her lips. “Because that was the same way I felt before Michael and I started dating.”

My eyes widen. “What? What do you mean?”

“Well, you know how I told you Michael and Max are best friends?” she begins, and I shake my head in confirmation.

“Yeah… I remember. But what does that have to do with you and Michael?”

“Let’s just say that Michael hasn’t always been the sensitive, monogamous honey that we all know and love,” she states abstractedly.

“Are you telling me that…” I stop talking and narrow my eyes at her. “Wait a minute. Michael was a player, too?”

She sighs and nods her head. “Almost as bad as Max. Those two used to wreak havoc on the poor unsuspecting girls of Roswell. God, how much I hated them both back then.”

My eyebrows rise. “And how did you two end up getting together?”

She gives a short laugh. “Believe it or not, we got paired up on a history project together.”

I laugh. “You’re kidding! Hmm… how romantic,” I tease, then remember that Max and I also got paired up that way.

Whoa. Talk about de ja vu.

“Yeah, right!” she snorts. “We fought the entire time! Everything he said was soo chauvinistic and of course, that didn’t sit too well with me. So, I ended up asking Mr. Becker if we could switch partners.”

“And then what happened?” I rest my chin in my hand as I wait anxiously for her to continue the story.

“Well, he put Michael with this slut Courtney Sparks and me with Billy Wang. Everything was going fine, we were avoiding each other and I was actually able to do my project without feeling the need to murder my partner! Then, I was working late one night and he came in around closing. Said he needed to ask me a question.”

Her eyes begin to glaze over as she speaks. “I remember telling him in no uncertain terms where he could stick his question and the next thing I knew, he was kissing me!”

I gasp in surprise. “You’re kidding! And what did you say?”

“Well, I was too shocked to pull away at first… and well, he’s an amazing kisser,” she states dreamily. “But after a minute, I realized what exactly was happening and I pushed him away and demanded to know what he was thinking, trying to rape me in my mother’s café!”

I laugh knowingly. “Why do I have the feeling that you didn’t put it quite that nicely?”

She smirks. “Okay, so maybe there were a few more colorful adjectives in there, you happy?”

“I knew it. Well, what was his excuse?”

“Oh, get this! He said, and I quote, ‘I did it to shut you up’. Can you believe that? Well, I almost swallowed my tongue in shock and started screaming at him to get the hell out and then he told me that he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about me.”

“Aw…” I coo teasingly.

“I know. I had no idea how to respond! Which was probably a good thing, because then he gave me the sweetest kiss I’ve ever dreamed about, much less received. And we’ve been together ever since,” she finishes, her green eyes sparkling. “He hasn’t been with another girl since that night.”

“Wow… talk about a fairytale,” I quip, and she snaps a dishrag at me.

“Yeah, yeah… laugh it up! But I’ll have you know that I have that boy tamed down to what kind of underwear to buy,” she says smugly.

“Let me guess… does it match yours?” I bat my eyes jokingly and Maria pretends to reach across to strangle me.

We begin a mock wrestling match, complete with giggling and flying hands, until we hear two throats cleared.

“Wow, Maxwell. I didn’t know that they moved Ladies Night Wrestling to Amy’s.”

“Yeah, how do you girls feel about mud? Or Jell-O?”

Maria and I freeze, turning to see Max and Michael grinning at us like fools.

I suddenly realize that I’m on top of Maria and am straddling her while pinning her hands to the floor.

Blushing furiously, I jump up and refuse to meet their teasing eyes.

“Very funny, guys,” Maria mumbles, her own face an abnormal shade of red. “Show’s over.”

“Oh, come on… don’t stop on our account,” Michael teases and is rewarded with a smack in the chest by Maria.

I finally turn to find Max smiling at me and I return with a shy one of my own.

“Hey,” he says quietly, as Maria and Michael begin a long hello kiss.

“Um, hey Max,” I smile, pushing a strand of my hair back behind my ear. “What’s up?”

“Actually… I was wondering if maybe I could talk to you?” he asks, flashing me that signature sexy grin of his.

“I thought we were talking,” I tease, turning to pick up a few plates from a nearby table.

He follows me and I make sure that I give him a little of his own medicine by bending over just enough to be flirtatious.

Sure enough, I feel his eyes move towards the creamy expanse of my thighs and then I straighten back up, flashing him a knowing grin.

“Not here…” he says, pouting his lower lip adorably. “I thought maybe…”

“Hey, Liz. Want to come to my place tonight?” Maria suddenly breaks in, giggling as she slaps away Michael’s roaming hands. “This bozo’s gotta study tonight for his pop quiz tomorrow.”

“Hey!” Michael pouts. “You know, I don’t get why they call it a pop quiz if they’re gonna tell us about it.”

“It’s that kind of thinking that gets you in trouble, sweetheart,” Maria replies, ruffling his spiky hair. “Besides, would you rather not know and fail it?”

Michael appears to contemplate the options, then shrugs his shoulders.

“So, Liz?” Maria smiles at me and I turn to see Max biting his lip, as if he knows I’m going to turn him down.

Okay, I’ll admit it.

I may have been playing hard ball with Max these past couple of weeks. But I have good intentions at heart!

I just wanted to find out exactly how serious he is about me… about us… so I haven’t exactly made myself available to him, turning down his attempts to hang out and keeping our conversations pretty short and sweet, yet flirtatious.

And so far, he hasn’t tripped up. Yet.

But just because I don’t see him with other girls, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

And judging by the way the girls at school are constantly flocking around him, he’ll have to do a lot to prove that he’s genuinely interested in starting something up with me.

But then again, I miss him.

Sure, he’s always around, eating at the café, watching me at school… but it’s not the same as actually being with him.

I turn to him and see him staring at the floor, waiting for his dismissal.

Turning towards Maria’s expectant face, I answer,” Actually, Maria… Max and I are going to hang out tonight. Maybe another time?”

At this, Max’s head shoots up and he looks appropriately startled. Then a happy smile slides over his features.

Maria looks surprised too, then glances at Max with less than approving eyes. “Are you sure…?”

“Yes,” I reply, raising my eyebrows towards her and she immediately backs down.

“Okay… but call me later,” she says, returning my warning look and then reluctantly grabs Michael’s hand, shooting one last admonitioning glance at Max.

After they leave, I sigh and turn back to Max. “So… where are we going?” I ask in a chipper voice.

“Oh, um…” he looks perplexed for a moment, then a wry smile appears on his face. “Actually, I have no idea.”

I raise an eyebrow. “You asked me to hang out and then you don’t know where?”

“Well, I really didn’t think you were going to accept,” he chuckles honestly and I feel my heart kind of leap.

“So… are you reconsidering now that I’m available?”

“No!” he replies quickly. I secretly feel pleased by his outburst.

“Why don’t we hang out your place?” I ask, untying my apron from around my waist.

“I guess…” he states. “If that’s where you want to go.”

“Sure,” I reply brightly. “After all… I haven’t seen Isabel since that first time I met her. I want to find out if she’s really as big a bitch as Maria says-“

I immediately clap a hand over my mouth in chagrin as I realize I’m insulting his sister.

But he simply laughs. “Liz, it’s all right. Isabel is a little hard to handle. Don’t be embarrassed.”

“Max, I’m sorry… I didn’t mean that,” I say lamely, my face burning despite his reaction to my comment.

“I said don’t worry about it. I’ve said plenty worse about her, believe me,” he winks and I begin to feel slightly better.

“Um… all right. Just let me go clock out and I’m all yours, okay?”

His eyes darken momentarily and his smile falters. “You… you are?” he breathes in a husky voice and just like that the mood shifts from playful friendliness to boiling passion.

“I’ll be back,” I whisper, deciding the best course of action would be to just get out of there before I say something else that will completely humiliate me.

I feel his eyes burning into me as I turn and flee to the back room.

<center>Part 8 (continued...)</center>

(Liz POV)

“No way.”

“Way.”

“Uh uh.”

“Yep.”

“Max, that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard!” I cry in mock disdain. “The Academy is never going to nominate a Kevin Smith movie for Best Picture. Especially, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back!”

“Hey, that’s my personal opinion you’re berating!” he replies, shooting me a wounded look, betrayed only by the faint twinkling in his amber eyes.

“Yeah, well your opinion is crap!” I giggle, holding my hand out. “Besides… this movie came out a couple of years ago. It missed its chance. Give me the remote.”

“Not until I see what happens,” he singsongs, smiling smugly at the television.

“I can tell you what happens,” I reply in irritation. “He ends up fighting that guy from Star Wars and gets hit in the cock.”

Max’s eyes widen and he looks over at me in surprise. “What did you say?”

“I said he ends up fighting Mark Hamill,” I say, holding out my hand again for the remote.

“No you didn’t, you said something about him getting hit in the… what was it, Liz?”

My face turns red as I glance at him, seeing the delighted amusement on his face. “I didn’t say anything,” I lie, biting my lower lip furiously.

“Uh huh, I think it was something about… a rock? Or was it a block? Or maybe it was a-“

Cock, all right!” I blurt out, frowning as my face heats even more. “I said he got hit in the cock!”

He begins cracking up, wiping invisible tears from his eyes. “That was the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Say it again!”

I cross my arms, glaring at him in a mix between anger and mortification. “Why are you laughing?”

“Because I’ve never heard you say anything remotely close to cock, all right? One could believe you didn’t even know such words,” he replies, sniffling slightly as his laughter began to recede.

My eyes narrow. “Laugh it up, just because I don’t go flaunting it doesn’t mean I’m naïve.”

His eyes darken and he regards me with intense appraisal. “No, you’re full of surprises,” he replies, his voice laden with admiration and… interest?

My heart speeds up at his husky tone and I swallow as the mood instantly shifts once again. “So… where is everyone tonight?” I ask, glancing around the spacious living room as if seeing it for the first time.

He blinks, then slips back into the friendly attitude he’s donned the entire night. “Oh, well, my parents are out of town-“

“Again?” I interrupt in surprise. “I thought they just got back?”

“Yeah, well they had to leave again,” he responds looking away, but not before I catch a glimpse of scorn clouding his beautiful eyes.

“Oh,” I murmur, wondering if maybe I’d inadvertently upset him.

“Yeah,” he replies, then clears his throat and continues as if I’d never spoken. “And Isabel is… out. Not really sure I want to know where, either.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I raise my eyebrows.

“It means that whatever Isabel does with her life is her own business,” he says, glancing over at me, a wry smile lighting his lips. “It’s always been that way with us, ever since our early teens.”

“Still, don’t you worry about her? She is your sister,” I remind him, trailing my hand unconsciously down the soft sofa cushion.

Step-sister,” he corrects me. “And Isabel can take care of herself, trust me.”

“Right,” I frown, wondering not for the first time about the details of Max and his family.

“Anyway, let’s get back to the real topic at hand,” he says, the discomfort leaving his features and being replaced with light humor.

“Oh, and what is that?” I ask, cocking my head to observe him.

“The fact that you have already seen this movie, despite the fact that you call it an aberration of decency, I believe it was?” he flutters his eyelashes teasingly.

I flush and try to hide my laughing eyes. “Yeah, well… let’s just say I had a momentary lapse of judgement.”

“Uh huh… right,” he teases, leaning over to whisper in my ear. “Don’t worry… I won’t tell.”

I look over at him glare jokingly. “Oh… you’re gonna get it! We’ll see who’s laughing then!”

He chuckles in surprise as I suddenly shove him over and pin his arms above his head as I hold him at my mercy.

“Is that the move you used on Maria?” he grins and I roll my eyes.

“Did I say you could speak, slave boy?” I quip, narrowing my eyes as I press him harder against the couch. “Don’t make me hurt you.”

All traces of playfulness leave our faces as his eyes darken and he stares at me as I sit on top of him.

I swallow, realizing our current arrangement. I begin to pull off of him, mumbling an, “Uh… sorry.”

He opens his mouth to speak when the front door flies open, revealing a perfectly composed Isabel Evans.

She simply arches one eyebrow in response to our compromising position and says, “Oh, it’s you again. I thought he’d gotten tired of you already.”

My face burns and I quickly move off of Max and sit silently next to him.

Max, on the other hand, glares at her. “Hey, Izzy. Maybe it’s just because your skirt is so short… but I can see that huge stick up your ass.”

She purses her lips together and heads towards her room without even giving us so much as a second look.

After her door slams shut, Max and I look at each other and start cracking up.

Omigod, I can’t believe you said that!” I gasp, staring at him in shock.

“Hey, she deserved it,” he rolls his eyes. “She can be such a bitch sometimes. I don’t even think she notices anymore.”

“Why is she like that?” I ask, curiosity getting the better of me.

He grows quiet, and I realize I may have overstepped my bounds again.

“Never mind, maybe I should go…” I start, avoiding his gaze as I begin to stand.

His soft plea, coupled with the gentle feel of his hand stops me. “Stay.”

I look down and see his pleading eyes. “I don’t know… it’s getting kind of late,” I fudge, biting my lip in uncertainty.

“Liz, please…” he whispers, his gaze penetrating my resolve not. “Don’t leave.”

I sigh and sit back down, hugging my knees as I stare at the television screen. “So… what are we going to do?” I ask, trepidation filling my voice.

He seems to notice my distance because he heaves a heavy sigh and sinks back against the couch. “Liz… what’s going on between us?”

I glance at him sharply, surprised by the defeated tone of his voice. “What do you mean? I thought we were friends…”

“Are we?” he cuts me off, and I can feel his golden eyes staring at me. “Because it seems like you’ve been avoiding me ever since you agreed to give me… give us a chance.”

“Max,” I laugh nervously, tucking a strand of hair back behind my ear. “I’m not avoiding you. I’m here, aren’t I?”

“Yeah,” he murmurs, then he sighs again. “Maybe I’m just being stupid,” he says in a low tone that I almost don’t catch.

But I do, just as I hear the critical cynicism etching his voice.

“Max…” I begin, sighing as I shift on the couch to look at him. “This is just… it’s hard for me, you know? This whole… thing… between us. It’s confusing.”

“How is it confusing?” he asks, staring at me in bewilderment. “Liz, I thought you agreed to give whatever happens between us a chance. I mean… you haven’t changed your mind. Have you?”

He practically whispers those last words and I fill a sense of disdain for myself fill me.

“No, Max,” I whisper. “I haven’t changed my mind.”

He appears to calm down at my words, but his gaze is still questioning. “Then, why don’t you ever talk to me? At school, at Amy’s… why are you so afraid to get close to me?”

I feel as though I’m sinking in a deep pool, thrashing about for something… anything to hold onto, as I listen to his words and I struggle for a reply.

“Liz? Talk to me, please!”

“It’s not just you, all right?!” I shout suddenly, and he draws back, startled at my heated words.

He stares at me as my chin quivers, a mixture of shock and hurt covering his features.

“I’m just… I’m scared of getting too close to anyone again,” I finally admit, tears clouding my vision as I say the truth that has been haunting me ever since I came to live in Roswell. “I don’t want to trust you, Max! I don’t want to care about you… because I know what it’s like to lose someone you care about. And I never want to go through it again!”

His eyes widen and his gaze becomes knowing as he shifts closer to me. “Liz…” he murmurs, reaching out to touch my arm. “Liz, it’s okay.”

I burst into tears at his soft comment and bury my face into his welcoming embrace.

He immediately wraps his strong arms around me and pulls me close to his chest, stroking my hair as he whispers comforting words into my ears.

“Liz… shh… it’s going to be okay. Look, we don’t have to talk about it,” he says, an oddly choked tone in his voice.

I cry harder and his grip tightens in an almost unbearable hug. “I’m sorry, Liz…” he whispers, “I’m so sorry…”

We sit there for who knows how long, me crying and Max trying to soothe me.

We both hold onto each other for dear life.

Finally, my sobs die down to choking sniffles, and I look up to find Max staring down at me, a shiny film covering his own amber gaze.

“I didn’t mean to push you, Liz,” he begins in a broken tone, but I simply place a trembling finger to his lips, and his words die.

“Max, can we talk?” I ask, my voice soft and trembling as I gaze up at him. “I want to… just talk?”

He continues to stare down at me, his mouth working uncontrollably as he tries to answer me. “Liz… we don’t have to talk. You don’t have to explain-“

“No, I want to,” I whisper. “I need to talk to someone… and I feel safe with you.”

His eyes soften with understanding and appreciation as he slowly nods his assent. “Of course. I’m here.”

I offer him a shaky smile and he moves to allow me to shift away from his embrace, but I shake my head and grip his shirt even tighter.

He stills and after a moment, his arms come back around me, lightly.

We sit there in silence for a moment, then I begin.

<center>Part 8-(continued....)</center>

(Max POV)

I shut the door to my room, sparing a glance towards my bed, where Liz presently resides.

She is staring at the patterns adorning my comforter, her eyes bright with unreleased tears.

As she looks up to meet my gaze, I walk towards her and sit down.

She immediately crawls into my arms, laying her head against my chest as I hold her tightly.

I patiently wait for her to speak, aware of the overwhelming silence. But for some reason, I don’t feel awkward. I feel completely at ease.

“I’m a complete fraud.”

I don’t respond, feeling that her words are meant more for herself than for me.

She lets out a short laugh and wipes her eyes with the heel of her hand. “It’s funny, you know? You live your whole life trying to be the best you can be, doing everything the way you’re expected to. Going to church, making the best grades, staying innocent… everything a ‘perfect daughter’ should do,” she snorts in disbelief, her voice shaking with disdain. “And for what? So that your parents end up dead at the age of forty?”

I stroke her hair as she sniffles, burying my face into her silky tresses.

“Everything I’ve done in my entire life…” she begins, her voice cracking, “it’s all been for them. So that they would appreciate me. So that I wouldn’t disappoint them. So that they could live a perfect life, believing they’d raised the perfect daughter. But what about me? How am I supposed to live now? What am I supposed to do, Max? Because lately it seems like everything I ever believed has been a lie. I… I don’t even know who I am sometimes.”

“That’s not true,” I whisper, pulling her back so she can look into my eyes. “You’re Liz.”

“And who is that, Max?” she asks, staring earnestly into my eyes. The pain and desolation swirling in her chocolate gaze unsettles me. “Tell me, because I don’t think I know anymore.”

I take a deep breath, pain filling my heart at her broken words. “You’re the kindest person I’ve ever met,” I whisper, hoping my honest words will help her. “And you’re also one of the smartest. Not to mention the fact that you’re incredibly beautiful.”

She blushes from my words, but looks away. “No, that’s just who I pretend to be,” she murmurs, a single tear slipping down her cheek.

“Liz…” I begin, my heart breaking at her despair.

“It’s true, Max,” she whispers, glancing back at me. “Ever since I came to Roswell, I’ve been judging you. For the way you are. The things you’ve done…”

I inhale sharply, feeling a slight pang of hurt at her honesty.

“I’ve been so busy judging everyone else that I’ve never stopped to consider myself,” she continues. “And you know what, Max? I’m a complete hypocrite.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask softly, staring at her sadly. “Liz…”

“I didn’t go to my parent’s funeral, Max,” she whispers, and I draw back in surprise.

“What?”

“I couldn’t look at them,” she replies, her voice thick with tears. “I couldn’t bear to see them and admit to myself what a failure I really was.”

“Liz, you are not a failure,” I answer firmly. “Why would you think that?”

“Because I wasn’t there, Max!” she answers, a wild look in her normally serene eyes. “I did everything perfectly, but I couldn’t save them!”

“Liz, you couldn’t save them,” I say, tucking her chin with my fingers. “It was an accident. You can’t control everything that happens.”

She yanks away from me, anger clouding her face. “How do you know?! You have the perfect life, don’t you, Max? Everyone thinks you’re so great! They all love you so much!”

“No!” I shout, feeling my own repressed emotions barrel forth. “You’re wrong, Liz! No one loves me! No one at all!”

She falls quiet, staring as I struggle to rein in my outburst. “What do you mean?” she finally whispers, her doe eyes penetrating.

“Nothing,” I say hoarsely, looking away in humiliation.

I feel her fingers trailing softly over my face and turn to see her gazing at me. “Please, Max…”

I swallow, my insides churning at the idea of revealing my introverted secrets. “I… I don’t know if I can, Liz,” I admit, hanging my head.

“I’m here,” she says the exact words I told her and I feel another pang slice through me.

“Have you ever felt like anything you did just wasn’t good enough?” I ask, staring at the wall.

She nods against my chest, giving me the strength to continue.

“I’ve always been considered the ‘screw-up’,” I laugh bitterly. “Ever since my dad had his affair.”

“How is that your fault?” she demands, and I stiffen.

“Because I’m the result.”

She gasps, looking up at me. I refuse to meet her gaze, embarrassed to see her shocked expression. I can’t believe I have revealed my family’s deep, dark secret.

“Oh, Max…” she whispers, another tear sliding down her features.

“My father couldn’t very well get rid of me,” I continue blandly. “So he agreed to take me under his roof and left my mother with a very fat check which she apparently took without sparing a glance back.”

I feel the tears stinging my eyes, reminding me of times so long ago. “My father’s always given me everything my heart’s desired… except for one thing. His love.”

“Oh, Max…”

“I’ve always been the black sheep, the only reason it was never announced was because Phillip Evans couldn’t have anything marring his perfect persona,” I finish dryly, the bitterness flowing within me.

“Then he’s a complete idiot,” she states loyally, and I feel the makings of a smile lighting my features.

Moments of silence pass between us, before Liz finally nudges me.

“I think it’s time we stopped living in the past and looked towards our future,” she says, an odd glint in her eyes.

“Oh yeah? And what is that?” I ask doubtfully.

“Us,” she replies, caressing my cheek with her soft hands.

“Us?” I whisper, afraid to get my hopes up.

“Yes, Max,” she responds. “You and me. I’m tired of denying what my heart really wants. And I want you.”

A/N: By the way, I don’t think I mentioned it, but Isabel is Max’s half-sister. Not stepsister. But they tell everyone that they are stepbrother and sister because they can’t tell about Mr. Evans affair. Everyone understand (I hope)? Also… this part will probably seem like it’s coming out of left field… actually, it’s supposed to be surprising! Hee hee! Expect a lot of new insight into some characters!

<center>Part 9</center>

(Max POV)

My mouth falls open as I hear the words I’ve been dreaming of slip off her tongue like silk.

I realize that I must be staring, because she kind of pulls away and looks at me in concern.

“Max?” she asks, wrapping her arms around her knees as she watches me. “Did I say something wrong?”

“No,” I respond immediately. “It’s quite possible that you just made me the happiest man on the planet.”

She turns a pretty shade of pink and smiles shyly, flashing her pearly whites. “Really?”

I turn to her, smiling as I cup her cheek with my hands. “Liz… I want to be with you so much. I want to see you… and hold you… and kiss you…”

I accentuate each statement with a feather-light kiss against her forehead, her cheek, and finally, her soft mouth.

She parts her lips in welcome and I gently plunder her warm recesses, tenderly laving my tongue against hers.

She releases a small moan, wrapping her arms around my shoulders as we fall against the bed.

“Max…” she whispers, breaking away from my lips with a gasp.

I begin placing hot, open-mouthed kisses along her jaw and down her neck.

“Yeah?” I breathe, tracing the sensitive area below her ear lobe.

“Does this mean… we’re together?” she gasps, clutching my head to her as I catch her lobe between my lips, sucking lightly.

“Is that what you want?” I ask, dipping my tongue inside her small cavity.

“I… I… yes!” she breathes in pleasure.

I immediately still, closing my eyes against the pain and pleasure her words cause me.

I pull away, running my hand down my face as I struggle to catch my breath. “Liz…”

“What?” she stares at me, her face all flushed and beautiful as she watches me. “What’s wrong?”

I look at her and am hit with a wave of desire as I take in her ravished features, swollen lips and tousled hair.

And I know I what I have to do.

“Liz, there’s something I have to tell you,” I begin nervously, unable to look at her until I’m done.

If she even stays after I tell her the truth.

“Max… what is it?” she asks, staring at me with wide eyes.

I glance at her and swallow at the pure trust in her eyes. Eyes that will be hurt and confused when I’m finished.

“Liz, I –“

The door to my room is suddenly thrown open, and Isabel stands there, her normally cool and collected demeanor replaced with desperation.

“Max! You have to come quick!” she says, and I notice the light film of tears shining in her brown eyes.

I tense up, pulling away from Liz as I stare at my sister, my heart beating wildly. “Isabel, what happened?”

“There’s been in an accident,” she says in a trembling voice and I feel the color drain from my face.

“Dad?” I whisper, the emotions churning inside my stomach and making me want to throw up.

“No, Max. Dad’s fine. It’s… it’s Michael.”

(Liz POV)

I gasp, holding my hand to my mouth, before turning to look at Max.

His jaw clenches and his face is deathly pale, as he stares at his sister.

“Where?” he whispers, and I can’t help but feel like he already knows what happened.

“Down by Reggi’s. They… they beat him up and left him in an alley,” Isabel replies, a tear sliding down her perfect face.

Well, what do you know? The Ice Queen does have feelings.

Max pinches the bridge of his nose, expelling a worried sigh. When his eyes open again, I am surprised by the anger clouding his amber orbs.

“Nicholas,” he demands, his jaw set and his fists clenched with barely restrained fury.

Isabel simply nods her head, staring at the floor. “It’s… it’s really bad this time, Max. Maria called… she sounded hysterical.”

I place my hand on his arm. “Max, I’ll come with you.”

He turns to face me for the first time, his eyes wild and stormy. As my words penetrate his daze, his expression softens slightly.

“Liz… I can’t ask you to do that. Isabel can take you home.”

“No way!” Isabel exclaims, fixing Max with a determined look. “I’m going! Michael’s my friend, too!”

I stare at the two of them, once again feeling as if there is more going on than I realize.

Isabel and… Michael? Friends?

Max sighs and turns back towards me. “I won’t be long, Liz. If you want to wait here…”

“Max, I want to come,” I shake my head. “Please… I like Michael and I want to be there for Maria.”

He and Isabel catch each other’s eyes.

“She was really upset, Max,” Isabel whispers, and I am shocked when she throws me a grateful smile.

“Fine,” Max finally surrenders. “But no matter what happens, promise me you’ll stay in the Jeep? Both of you,” he adds, glancing towards Isabel.

I nod my head slowly, wondering exactly what the hell is going on.

<center>************************************</center>

Max practically breaks every speed limit there is from here to the tiny mini-mart in East Roswell.

The whole drive is silent, complete with Max brooding at the wheel and Isabel staring out the window worriedly.

I watch Max as he grips the steering wheel with white knuckles, his eyes trained on the red light.

“Come on, come on,” he mutters, then slams on the gas as the light changes.

“Max,” I whisper, reaching over to place my hand on his arm as he violently shifts into second gear.

“What?” he snaps, then realizes it’s me. “I’m sorry, Liz. Did you say something?”

“What… what happened to Michael?” I ask, staring at his taut form.

He looks away, staring at the dark road ahead of us. “He got himself into trouble.”

He leaves it at that, but my mind is whirling with possibilities. Just as I’m about to speak again, he swerves off the main road into a tiny, darkened alleyway.

My eyes bug out as I see Michael’s crumpled form lying against one of the buildings, Maria holding him closely.

Max is out of the car before I even realize he parked, and I struggle with my seat belt as I watch him stalk over to the couple.

Maria looks up, her face stained with tears as he approaches.

“How is he?” he demands in a low voice, as Isabel and I come up behind him.

“He’s conscious,” she replies, her voice thick with weeping. “They really did a number on him tonight, Max.”

“Oh, Maria…” I whisper, staring at the bruises and scrapes along Michael’s bloodied face.

Max spins around, leveling us with an accusing glare. “I thought I told you to stay put?”

Liz!” Maria squeals, jumping up and hugging me tightly. “Omigod! I’m so glad you’re here!”

“Of course I am,” I reply soothingly, rubbing her trembling form. “Maria… what happened?”

She pulls back, wiping her bloodshot eyes and sniffling. “My ex- boyfriend, Nicholas happened.”

“Where did he go?” Max demands, and I see the anger pulsating off of him in waves.

“Max, don’t…” Michael wheezes and we all stare down at him in surprise.

Michael!” Maria exclaims, dropping back down next to him. “Oh, baby… don’t talk! You’re going to be all right!”

“Blondie… you’re squeezing me half-to-death,” he replies, although he is holding her just as tightly.

“Oh, sorry,” she breathes, not releasing her grip and placing gentle kisses against his lips.

“Maxwell,” he nods once Maria buries her head in his shoulder.

“Michael, what did he do to you?” he asks, his voice softening as he stares at his best friend.

“It… it wasn’t that bad,” he replies, glancing at a pale Maria.

I catch his drift and take Maria’s arm. “Sweetie, you’re shivering. I have a jacket in Max’s Jeep.”

“No, I’m fine,” she replies, staying at Michael’s side.

He looks up at her worried face and manages a small smile. “Baby… go with her. I’m fine, I promise.”

She reluctantly nods and allows me to walk her over to the Jeep a few feet away.

I watch as Max and Isabel begin talking to a weary Michael.

“It’s all my fault, Liz,” Maria mumbles, and I glance back at her.

“How is it your fault?”

“If it weren’t for me, Nicholas wouldn’t have any reason to go after Michael,” she explains, her eyes dead.

“Maria, what happened here?” I ask, leading her to sit down on the leather seats.

She sniffles, then looks up at me. “Remember how I told you that Michael used to be a big player before we got together?”

I nod, waiting patiently for her to continue.

“Well, at the time I was dating this guy – Nicholas Bradshaw. He goes to East Roswell,” she explains. “Anyway, Michael messed around with one of his ex-girlfriends once, so Nick already hated him. When we got paired up on that project, Nick would always threaten to beat the hell out of him if he tried anything with me.”

She snorts through her tears and I place a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“At the time I just ignored him. Nick was always more of a talker than a doer. I definitely never thought he’d lose his mind the way he did.”

“So, this has happened before?” I swallow.

“Well, once I realized I had feelings for Michael and vice-versa, I went to tell Nicholas it was over. He blew up at me, demanding to know where that sonofabitch was because he was going to kill him,” she continues. “I thought he was just upset, but he slapped me and grabbed a hunting knife and went after Michael.”

I gasp. “Oh my God. He hit you?”

“Yeah, left a pretty big bruise, too,” she laughs shortly “When Michael found out, he was livid. He left to find Nick and they had a fight outside Guffey Park. By the time I got there, Nick had already cut him. I called the cops, but he got off with only an aggravated assault charge. He spent a few nights in jail, then his dad bailed him out.”

“You’re kidding me!” I shake my head. “They didn’t set up a restraining order or anything?”

“Not exactly,” she says. “Since Michael went looking for a fight, too, it wasn’t considered Nick’s fault.”

“But he had a weapon!” I cry in disbelief. “That right there is enough to at least get him sent to juvenile custody!”

“He isn’t allowed within thirty feet of Michael’s house or the high school,” Maria replies. “And Michael can’t go near East Roswell High or Nick’s house.”

“So, what happened here tonight?” I bite my nails nervously, glancing back to where Isabel is waving her arms around vigorously.

“I was driving Michael home and he wanted to stop by Reggi’s to grab some beer. I hate it when he drinks, but I didn’t feel like arguing tonight. When we got here… Nicholas and a bunch of his goons were inside,” she whispers. “Michael told me to get back in the car and call Max. I didn’t want to leave him, but he was yelling and I got so scared…”

She breaks off, sobbing into her hands as I wrap my arms around her.

“Before I knew what was happening, they had surrounded him and were kicking him and… hitting him… one of the guys had a broken bottle. Michael’s strong, but he couldn’t take them all.”

I listen to the story in horror, my mind racing with dismal thoughts.

What if it had been Max?

“By the time someone came out to break it up, they had already done enough damage that he couldn’t stand up. Nick and his friends ran off, but I know they aren’t finished. They’ll just keep doing this as long as Nick’s daddy keeps bailing him out and Michael doesn’t press charges.”

“Why doesn’t he?” I ask, surprised that this is even an issue.

“Michael’s already got some things on his record,” she confides to me. “He’s had a couple of DUI’s and public disturbances. If he did report this, they would just investigate him and what with Nick’s pristine record compared to Michael’s… there’s no way it would be approved.”

“That’s horrible.”

“Let’s talk about something else,” she whispers, hugging her knees. “What were you and Max doing?”

I blink at the sudden topic shift. “What?”

“You were there when I called,” she explains. “I would have thought you’d left by now.”

I blush slightly. “Yeah… I was going to, but we got kind of… sidetracked.”

Her eyes widen. “Oh my God… you two didn’t, like…”

No!” I hiss, glancing back over towards Max. “But we are going to try to see how it goes with us.”

“So, what? You two are a couple now?” she asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah,” I smile slightly, the words sounding strange yet reassuring to my ears. “Yeah, we are.”

“Wow…” she whispers. “Well, congratulations, I guess. Just remember, Liz. If he does anything…”

“You’ll be the first person I call,” I roll my eyes. “I really don’t get where all this animosity between you two comes from.”

“Hey, he started it!” she huffs. When I level an incredulous look at her, she flushes. “I mean, he’s always got something to say, you know? He’s never approved of Michael and I.”

“And you never say anything to him, right?” I tease.

She attempts to glare at me then sighs. “I can’t believe Isabel showed up.”

“Yeah, what’s that about anyway?” I ask curiously. “She was really worried on the way over here.”

“I know,” Maria whispers. “She and Michael used to be really close. When we were kids… those three were like the Three Musketeers or something.”

“I wonder what happened between them all?” I ask, already knowing a little behind Max and Isabel’s differences.

“That,” Maria states, watching the three interact, “is a mystery even I don’t claim to understand.”
