Chapter 10

Post by tiredmuse »

Well, it's been a loooonnngg time since I posted a new part to this. Just wanted to add a big sorry to those that have stuck by my fic. I really, really appreciate it. :D

I have put this part up at the PA but I didn't realize that I still had a thread here. New parts are coming soon, I hope to have 3 before I head back to England. Hope being the key word.

A bit of a warning for the next part. Rememeber, this is the first time the group as we know it, has met. And Maria's got herself in a little bit of trouble, and well, Tess, she never backs down. And Michael doesn't always think before he acts. But I promise happy warm fuzzies are coming. This is fluff afterall.

I hope you guys like this and (hint, hint) feedback is always welcome.

Chapter 10

Liz stood on the deck of her cottage with her eyes closed and tilted her face up toward the sun, enjoying the warm glow on her skin. Lowering her head she chuckled at the sight the before her: a harried Maria trailing behind an equally agitated Alex, who paced the length of the dock. His reaction to Maria’s kooky plan of the week had gone over pretty well actually; he was just refusing to go meet Maria’s new love interest Kyle Valenti. It was totally understandable. After all, Maria did let it slip to Kyle and his brother Michael that Alex was a she and however fabricated her best friend’s story was, Liz had to admit it was going to cause quite the commotion when the three of them went next door to for the barbeque in a few hours.

Thankfully, Michael hadn’t stopped by that morning to visit Liz for coffee or Kyle hadn’t taken Maria out in boat. Liz knew the boys were busy with guests of their own. Returning her thoughts to her friends, she watched the drama as it continued to unfold.

Maria had managed to calm Alex long enough to give him a hug and from the look of remorse on her face, beg for forgiveness. Alex wouldn’t be able to last long against this onslaught of tears and pleading. Maria and Liz were part of his trio, the Roswell Three Musketeers. They did everything together. A friendship like theirs was rare, true and timeless.

I give it three more minutes before he agrees to wear a bikini and shave his legs. Snorting, Liz covered her mouth. It wouldn’t do any good for Alex to see her making fun of his plight.

One thing was for sure, it was never, ever boring hanging with Maria Deluca.

~*~*~*~

Three hours. Three hours. That was all it took to keep Isabel happy. Michael counted himself lucky. He’d seen the closest thing to a sister he had do much more damage after breaking a nail. All it took was some slight furniture rearrangement and a few small sacrifices on his part; well, more on Kyle’s really. The dwarf was stuck sharing the pull-out couch with Maxwell, while he moved into the smaller of the bedrooms leaving the master room for Izzy and her friend Tess.

Knowing from experience how uncomfortable the old couch was, and how hard it was to sleep with springs stabbing into your back, Michael couldn’t help but grin and mock. “Don’t worry man. Max stopped wetting the bed back in the 5th grade. I’m sure he hasn’t had a relapse in ages.”

With Max’s protests in his ears, Michael narrowly avoided the Gatorade bottle that Kyle whipped at his head as he ran towards the door.

“Loser” Kyle muttered under his breath and stared at Max evilly. “If anything he said is true Evans, you’re sleeping in the jeep.”

Snickering, Michael went outside and found Isabel and Tess sprawled contentedly on lounge chairs, coated in gobs of greasy tanning oil. The scent of sickeningly sweet and fake smelling coconut plugged his nostrils. Both girls had on two piece bathing suits that could be mistaken for small triangles of brightly coloured fabric strung together with dental floss.

Michael cocked on eyebrow. “Did you forget to actually pack clothes in the 12 suitcases you brought Isabel? ‘Cause if you were looking to actually protect yourself from the elements, that” he pointed at her “really isn’t gonna do you much good.”

Isabel gave him a bored look before dismissing him with a wave of her hand. “While it’s nice to that my pseudo-brother has finally taken some interest in designer swimwear, it’s really no concern of yours what I do or do not wear Michael.”

“Tess and I look fantastic. And if this little number happens to get the attention of some tall, dark and handsome stranger on this very lake, then all the power to it.”

Michael snorted. “You mean the power of your breasts.”

Isabel sat up in her chair and gave Michael that grin that made him shuffle his feet back and forth. “I hope that if, and I do stress if here Michael, I meet someone, that he notices all of my assets.”

Frustrated, Michael gave Tess an accusing glare. “She gets this from you, you know. Certain qualities of your personality seem to be rubbing off on Iz.”

Narrowing her sea blue eyes, Tess got up from her seat and stood with her hands on her hips. “And what is that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, I’m sure you’ll figure it out eventually Tess. But in case you need a hint, think about Disney movies for a sec.”

Michael smirked at the confused look on the smaller girls clueless face. Pointing to Isabel he said “Lady.” Gesturing now to Tess his smirk deepened. “And the Tramp.”

“Michael!” Isabel exclaimed, deep with disapproval.

“Where do you get off Guerin?” Tess asked angrily, her milky skin turning red from embarrassment and hurt.

“Just saying it like it is, princess.” He answered bitingly turning the endearment into an insult. “You chase Max around for years, throwing yourself at him, knowing the whole time that my brother Kyle was in love you. And when you finally give him a chance – you break his heart!”

“That’s enough!”

~*~*~*~

“You know, I’m beginning to get a really good feeling about this,” Alex smiled at Liz as he helped her put saran wrap over the potato salad they were bringing over to Kyle and Michael’s cabin.

“From everything you two have said about these guys, they sound pretty cool. And if Kyle understands Maria at all, he’ll know that today’s surprise is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Pausing, he grinned wryly. “Just wait until he realizes that Maria Deluca is more like the iceberg herself.”

Shaking her head Liz packed the food into some plastic shopping bags. “Alex what are you talking about?”

“She’s the iceberg that sank the Titanic.”

Liz giggled and rolled her eyes. “Come on Alex, it’s not that bad.”

“Are you serious? Maria Deluca is a force of destruction so great and terrifying that we all get sucked up into each knew disaster she creates.”

“Sounds more like a tornado.” Liz pointed out.

“Actually, I prefer hurricane.” Maria pursed her lips as Alex sheepishly shrugged his shoulders. Leaning against the counter with her arms crossed she watched Alex squirm for a second or two then smiled.

“Come on Dorothy and Toto, we’re off to see the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.” Linking her arms with Alex and Liz she started off to the door. She made it two steps before Liz stopped and gave in to her curiosity.

“Alright Maria – which is which? Is Michael the lion and Kyle the scarecrow? Or the other way around?”

Maria pinched Liz’s cheek. “Sorry sweetie. Glinda the good witch never reveals the secret of the ruby slippers until the end of the movie. You’ll have to use that big brain of yours and figure it out.”

“She’s got it wrong Liz.” Alex grumbled “I’m not Toto. I’m definitely in need of a brain for going through with this.”

~*~*~*~

“Michael,” Kyle struggled to keep his voice even when all he wanted to do was wring his stubborn brother’s stupid neck. “That’s enough. Whatever happened between Tess and me is none of your business. It’s the past, man. If I had any reason to be angry with her, I’ve let it go. Do the same.”

“Kyle, come on”

Michael.”

It was the tone of his brother’s voice that made him close his mouth and bite down on his next retort. He hated knowing he was upsetting Kyle. Michael would rather cut off his own arm than let the Keebler Elf go through any pain. He walked away instead, heading down to the water.

“Tess, I’m sorry.” Kyle saw the unshed tears in her eyes and the way she blinked them back and gave him a ghost of a smile. “It’s okay Kyle, really. He’s your brother. He’s only trying to look out for you the only way he knows how to.”

Kyle brushed the blonde curls out of her face and pulled her in close, his chin resting on top of her head. So intent on taking care of his friend Kyle didn’t hear the approaching footfalls behind him.

“Well chica, there’s your answer.” Kyle let go of Tess and saw Maria arm in arm with Liz and a very tall, skinny and completely unfeminine Alex. Maria’s lips were set in a straight line and her green eyes nearly glowed with fury. She gave Liz a brittle smile. “I did have it wrong. He’s not the lion or the scarecrow.”

Pulling Alex with her Maria made her introductions. “Alex meet Kyle, the Tin Man. You know, the one that has no heart.” Her hand still holding Alex’s she continued. “Kyle this is Alex. I see you’ve noticed that he is in fact not a girl nor has he ever been.”

Liz pushed forward standing in between the completely befuddled Kyle and her angry friend. “So,” she stated brightly “what’s for dinner?”

~*~*~*~

The dinner was the definition of awkward. Silence circled the group, the only sounds the scrape of plastic cutlery on Styrofoam plates in between the chewing of food. Tension seemed to be between everyone. Kyle regarded Alex suspiciously, while ignoring Maria. Maria took turns glaring at Kyle and the pretty blonde he had been holding when she, Liz and Alex arrived at Valenti-Guerin cabin. Tess seemed to find the whole situation amusing, and was doing her best to make things worse by sitting as close to Kyle as she could without actually falling in his lap. Alex was at one end of the picnic table in a beat up plastic lawn chair with Isabel, another gorgeous blonde, beside him on the same bench as Kyle and Tess. She and Maria sat across from them.

The final guest, Max Evans, Isabel’s younger brother was at the other end of the table; his chair a twin to Alex’s. He seemed to be the only person that wasn’t upset or uncomfortable. Quiet and intense-like, with dark hair that nearly fell into his eyes, he ate his food and watched the others thoughtfully.

The worst of it was that Michael wasn’t even here. All she could get out of Kyle between his arguing with Maria was that he had stormed off somewhere. “Let him cool of Liz, he’ll be back eventually.” was the only explanation she was given. No one else seemed to be concerned with his disappearance.

She could feel Isabel’s eyes on her, sizing her up. Liz fought the urge to shrink under the girl’s stare and sat up straight. It was hard to not feel intimidated. Isabel was beautiful. Long flowing blond locks with a killer body and a wicked smile that had reduced poor Alex to a stuttering fool upon meeting her. Liz was surprised that he hadn’t spontaneously combusted from being so close to her.

Meeting Isabel’s direct gaze evenly Liz waited for the interrogation to begin. “So, Liz? It is Liz, isn’t?” Isabel’s voice was falsely cheerful, the type of shrill babble you’d expect from the dumb cheerleader type; but Liz could sense underlying steel in the supermodel look-a-like. This girl was no idiot. And even worse, she was one of Michael’s closest confidantes.

Liz wondered if they had ever dated. Comparing her bra size to Isabel’s, Liz hoped not.

“Yeah. It’s Isabel right?”

Nodding Isabel gave another high wattage smile, her prefect white teeth gleaming in the afternoon sun. “It’s strange, that we’ve never met before. I’ve been visiting Kyle and Michael at this cabin for years now. Did your family just buy the one next door?”

Liz gave a sad smile. “No it belonged to my grandmother. She died last year.”

The fake smile dimmed and Liz saw real compassion come over Isabel’s face. “I’m sorry Liz.”

“It’s okay Isabel. I hadn’t been here in a long time, not since I was a kid. I thought that it would be good to see my Grandmother Claudia’s cottage again before I go to school in the fall.”

“You’re going to college?” Isabel asked, “Where?”

“Harvard, actually.”

“Impressive,” Isabel raised an eyebrow, “You must be a brain. Scholarship?”

“Partial. My parents are going to pay for what they can and I have some savings from working at the Crashdown.”

“That’s the restaurant that you’re parents own? The alien-themed café in Roswell?”

Tess giggled. “Let me guess. Bug-eyed green aliens painted on the walls, greasy food and some very scary uniforms that probably involve antennae.”

“Gee Tess, what are you psychic?” Liz asked a little coolly.

“For your information, blondie, I work at the Crashdown as well, and it’s a great place.” Maria glared at Tess, just warming up. “The food, while maybe not to your caviar and pate tastes, is fantastic and we happen to look pretty damn cute in our uniforms.”

“I wasn’t being bitchy Maria. I’ve been to the Crashdown.”

“What?” Maria exclaimed. “Sure you have. And I'm Avril Lavigne and you’re really the Virgin Mary."

“Maria,” Alex started, just as Isabel fixed a scary look his friends way, “Let her finish.”

“I can’t believe you Alex! She just”

“MARIA!”

“Fine, Fine.” Maria waved her hands around dramatically and gave a small bow to Tess. “Go on. Tell your little story.”

Taking a deep breath Tess tried to stay calm. It wasn’t her fault that Kyle’s new summer fling had seen him give her a hug. She and Valenti were ancient history. And what Tess couldn’t understand was where Maria’s victim status came from. Hadn’t she told Kyle that her friend Alex was a girl?

Rolling her eyes, she went on “As I was saying. I’ve been to Roswell. My Dad is in the army and until he retired a few years back I spent most of my life moving from one place to the next. He was stationed on the base outside Roswell for a few weeks one summer when I was a kid.” Tess pushed her hair out of her face, remembering what it was like being that girl. “I was lonely; not many families were staying there at the same time so I was on my own a lot. But I remember my Dad taking me to your parent’s restaurant Liz. I loved how bright and colourful it was. And the food, was excellent.”

Turning her attention to Maria, Tess smirked. “I’ve never liked caviar. Unlike some people, I actually care about what I put in my mouth.”

Liz got to her feet in record time and pulled Maria away from the picnic table. Alex, knowing Maria as well as she did, knew the stunned look and speechlessness would only last so long before “Hurricane” Deluca went into action

“It was a lovely meal, Kyle. Nice to meet all of you.” Liz thanked the group, and started for the cottage but not before she noticed the slight smile and amused look on Max’s face. His smile grew when he saw her looking at him. Liz smiled automatically in response, glad that someone was actually enjoying themselves.

Alex’s gaze lingered on Isabel and he melted as she smiled back at him. “Thanks again. Sorry about all the… everything.” Flustered he hurried after Liz who was dragging a screeching Maria back to the cottage.

Chapter 11A

Michael wandered the shoreline of Aurora Lake; kicking at the odd stone or slim piece of tree bark that littered his path. He tried to control the urge to go and throttle his ‘little’ brother. Didn’t Kyle realize he was only looking out for him? The last thing in the world he wanted was some two-timing, Marilyn Monroe wannabe named Tess to do any more damage to his adopted brother’s heart. So what if he hurt Kyle’s pride along the way? Better he put an end to her scheming now, before she got him hooked around her baby finger again. Or god-forbid, if there was a baby. Michael shuddered at the images that ran through his very visual mind. Thoughts of Kyle and Tess poised mid coitus had him stopping dead in his lumbering tracks.

Sighing, Michael sat down on the stretch of sand and ran fingers through his hair, suppressing his urge to rip it out. He knew he was being unfair. Tess did in her own blonde ambition way, care for Kyle. He knew that deep down. It was just that every time he saw her, he was reminded of the heart-ache Kyle had went through when she broke up with him the year before. He’d gladly cut off his right hand and never paint another thing, if it meant that Kyle would be spared that pain.

When the then Deputy Jim Valenti had responded to a domestic dispute call eleven years ago and walked into Michael’s battered existence, he’d given him a fresh start. One that was free of abuse and violence from a man who liked to use a small boy as a punching bag. He’d given Michael a father, a real father and not some drunken lout who liked to bang the trashy women he brought back to the trailer with their too much eye makeup and brittle laughs.

Jim taught him how to fish and signed him up for Kyle’s Little League team. He taught him respect for himself and for the law that he so believed in. He never asked him to call him Dad, just waited until Michael knew that’s what he was to him.

And Kyle, well he was a little put out at first. Hard for a seven year old boy not to be when his Dad brings home a new brother. Especially one like Michael was, so bruised physically and emotionally and wary of his new surroundings.

Kyle’s misgivings didn’t last long, however. He’d always been a good kid with a big heart and while he didn’t understand everything that Michael had gone through, he wanted to make his new brother feel at home with him and their father. It wasn’t easy, but eventually the Valenti men persevered over the stubborn and sullen little boy.

Michael rubbed his eyebrow, lost in thought. Suddenly, his memories were interrupted by a small hand waving in front of his face.

“Heelllooo!! Earth to Michael, come in space case.” The waving turned into a quick snapping of fingers. Irritated, Michael grabbed the hand and pulled a startled Maria down to the ground beside him.

“Deluca –I’m right here. You don’t need to yell in my ear.”

Maria straightened and sniffed at him. “FYI, Spaceboy, I wasn’t yelling. Believe me - you’ll know when I yell at you.”

Michael rolled his eyes. Ignoring her he continued watching the water shimmer before him. Trying to find a way to tactfully tell her to take a hike so he could have some quality brooding time before apologizing to Kyle (and, deep breath Tess too), he started to speak than stopped when he realized the girl had been crying. Her eyes were puffy and red and her normally perfect skin was blotchy.

“Christ, just what I need,” he muttered. Loudly he added, “Look, you’re upset about something. I’ll just go get Kyle.”

“Oh no. The last person in the world I want to talk with right now is your brother. Hell is gonna freeze over first before I talk to him again.”

Silence for a moment.

Sighing, Michael said, “I know I’m going to regret this, but what’s wrong Maria?”

The girl’s green eyes pooled with tears and she began to weep again.

I had to ask he thought miserably. Just what the hell was he going to do with her?

~*~*~*~

Meanwhile back at the Liz’s cottage, she and Alex were sitting around the kitchen table, playing a mean game of “Go Fish”. Ages ago, Alex had tried to teach his two favourite girls poker and had given up after an hour. Liz’s face hid nothing when she got a decent hand, and Maria would never fold even when she had terrible cards. The three had agreed it was better to stick to the basics.

“So…how much longer do we let Maria sulk by herself before we go looking for her?” Liz asked after stealing Alex’s queen and making a pair.

Maria had asked for some time alone after the debacle that was the barbecue. She let Alex and Liz comfort her for a bit and than announced she wanted to take a walk by herself.

“We should let her be on her own for just a little bit longer,” Alex eyed his watch. “She’s only been gone for about half an hour. Gotta five?”

“Go fish.”

“Damn. We suck Liz. Here we are, at this amazing cottage during the last summer of our teenage lives and we’re playing kindergarten card games.”

Liz pressed her hand facedown into the table. “That’s it, I’m going to find Maria, whether she wants us to or not.” Standing, she reached for Alex and yanked him up beside her. “And you Alexis are coming with me.”

“Hey, I’ve proven my manhood,” he protested, “You promised no more ‘let’s give Alex a girl’s name’ jokes.”

Liz slipped on her flip-flops and waited impatiently for Alex to put on his sneakers. The second the last lace was tied, she opened the door and nearly ran into Kyle. He stood before her looking quite miserable.

“Hey Liz…can I talk to you for a sec?” He looked so wretched, Liz nodded and let him pass by.

Kyle and Alex regarded each other suspiciously. Alex wasn’t sure if this guy deserved Maria after seeing him with Tess. And Kyle was still trying to decipher why on earth Maria had told him both her best friends were female.

Making the first move, Kyle reached his hand out to Alex. A heartbeat skipped by and then Alex firmly shook his hand.

“Sorry about the whole mistaken identity thing,” Alex offered.

“Somehow I have a feeling that you didn’t volunteer to be a woman.”

Alex smiled. “You appear to know our Maria pretty well.” The smile vanished and his blue eyes turned stormy. “Hurt her again and I’ll kick your ass.”

Kyle took in Alex’s tall and skinny frame leaving the comparison to his shorter but well-defined body unspoken. “You think, huh?”

Alex flexed his puny biceps. “I know karate.”

“Can we please end the testosterone contest?” Liz interjected, rolling her eyes. “Alex – go find Maria. Kyle - sit down on the couch.”

“You know, you’re kinda hot when you’re pissed, Liz?!” Kyle winked at her.

This time Alex made a big show of looking annoyed. He kissed Liz’s cheek and promised to bring back their friend.

Kyle watched him leave. “You know, he’d make one ugly chick.” His grin faded when he caught the ‘look’ Liz was giving him. It was no where near as scary as Isabel’s, but he squirmed a little anyway.

“Look, Tess and I are just friends. That’s it. I’m a one woman kind of guy. Maria’s the one that I want.”

Liz softened her glare at his words. Kyle did seem heartfelt about his feelings for Maria. But she still had to ask. “Then why were you all over her when we arrived at the cabin?”

‘I wasn’t. I was giving one of my best friends a hug, after my idiot brother said something pretty rude to her.”

“Michael was rude to her?” Liz questioned, feeling there was more to the story than Kyle was sharing.

Kyle contemplated his words for a moment. “Look Liz…I’m not sure exactly what Michael’s told you about his past, and it’s not my place to do it for him.” Liz remained silent. “But because of where he’s come from, Michael’s never trusted people very well. Those people at my cabin are the only ones he considers real friends, and it took a while for that to happen.”

“He doesn’t forgive easily and he can be stubborn as all hell sometimes. This is why he has issues with Tess. She and I were involved a long time ago, and I got hurt in the process. Tess and I have made up, but Michael doesn’t always remember that.”

“He doesn’t let people in easily.” He gave her a small smile. “In fact I’ve never seen him take to someone else. Like the way he’s fallen for you.”

Liz flushed, and shook her head. “It’s not that simple Kyle, Michael and I… we’re not a couple or anything.”

“I think you are. You’re going to have to excuse my brother since he’s never had a girlfriend before. I’m betting he’s gonna screw it up a bit before he gets it right.”

“But I want you to know that I’ll be there to smack him upside the head and tell him what an ass he’s being. He’s lucky to have found someone like you Liz.”

“He’s lucky he has you for a brother Kyle.”

Kyle looked embarrassed at the heavy compliment. “Maybe we’re just lucky we found each other.”

“And if you ever tell him I said that, I will deny it until my deathbed.”

~*~*~*~

Maria had calmed down long enough to explain the gist of what happened. Unfortunately, Michael couldn’t stop laughing at her plight.

“And then you and Alex walked up? And Kyle had no idea that she was a he?” Michael doubled over and tried desperately to breathe. “Christ, I wish I had been there to see his face…”

Maria eyed him evilly for a moment as Michael tried to regain his composure. “What I meant to say was…I mean, that would’ve sucked…” Unable to keep a straight face, he broke out snickering.

Maria tried to keep up her angry façade but soon followed Michael by rolling around laughing beside him. “Oh my god, his face!” She exclaimed between peals of laughter, “He looked almost sick for a moment, like he was trying to figure out why I was friends with such a manly girl.”

Maria took a few deep gulps of air and calmed down. “Look Guerin, we may not get along that well, but I wanted to thank you, for listening to me.”

Michael simply shrugged. “No big deal. You mean a lot to Liz, and anyone who can keep Kyle on his toes like that has got my respect.”

“So Spaceboy…you gonna treat my best friend right?”

“Always Maria.”

~*~*~*~

Kyle and Liz were still deep in conversation about Maria, when a gentle knock sounded on her door. Curious, Liz rose to open it, wondering who it could be. Maria she would be able to hear from a mile away.

To her surprise, standing in front of her was the tall, intense form, of Max Evans. “Hey Liz,” he greeted her with a sincere smile, “Mind if I come in?”

“Sure Max, make your self at home.”

“What’s up Evans?” Kyle inquired from his spot on the couch.

“I’ve been delegated.” He answered wryly.

At their blank looks he just shook his head. “Isabel and Tess feel bad about what happened earlier. They want to make it up to you and Maria and Alex.”

“And how does the hussy plan on doing that?” Maria demanded from the doorway flanked by an exasperated Alex and a smirking Michael.

She and Michael had come across Alex as they headed back to the cottage. Alex and Michael had surprisingly hit it off right away, after the initial male posturing. And once Michael heard that Alex could play a few Metallica songs on his guitar, all was right in the world.

“Well,” Max added carefully, “Tess and Iz thought it would be nice if everyone got together for a bonfire tonight. On one condition,” he interjected as Maria started to complain, “We all make an effort to get along. We start from scratch.”

Everyone stayed silent. Liz looked into Maria’s eyes, searching for a sign as to how the girl felt about this idea. Her friend shrugged her shoulders slightly and turned to Alex. He nodded to Liz in agreement.

“We’ll go.” She answered for the three of them.

Max’s face broke into a huge grin. “That’s great. I’ll see you all tonight. Kyle, Michael ready to head back?” Max inclined his head toward the direction of the Valenti cabin.

“Yeah, one sec, Maxwell.” Michael’s eyes searched out Liz’s. She shivered at what she saw in them. They looked feral; as if he wanted to eat her up in one big bite.

In three strides, Michael had Liz gathered in his arms and proceeded to kiss the very breath out of her. He pulled back from her lips abruptly and cupped her face in his hands.

“Promise you’ll be there tonight,” he murmured, oblivious to the gaping stares from everyone around him. “I promise.” Liz whispered back leaning into his caress, frustrated that he’d stopped kissing her.

Michael grinned wickedly and whispered in her ear. “Bring a towel.”

At her confused look he laughed and kissed her on the forehead. “Don’t worry Liz. Just trust me.”

He reluctantly let her go and gestured to Max. “Ready to go, Maxwell?” Max’s face remained expressionless, but Michael thought her could read some irritation in his eyes. What’s got Maxwell’s panties in a bunch?he wondered briefly before leaving Kyle and Maria alone in the doorway in a heated discussion.

“What about Kyle?” Max asked him, as the two boys headed home.

“I wouldn’t worry about him. Maria’s just explaining a few things to him.” He smirked at his friend. “Though by God, that girl is exhausting.”

Hey look!! I am posting!! On my thread!! And it's not just an author's note!?!?!

Sadly, it's not a full new part. But, I am like sooo close to finishing the new part and I got a rare bout of inspiration on the Polar Attraction Drabble Thread and I wrote a little something to help tide you over. It takes place here in the Something More 'verse and my prompt was hammock.

It ain't much but I hope you likee. :D

Brief Interlude

Liz eyed the cord and netting strung between the two trees dubiously. Maria had suggested that after her disastrous affair with the dreaded orange deck chair that Liz had might better look for a new way to relax at Grandma Claudia’s cottage.

Gingerly she laid her hand on the hammock and tested her weight against the flimsy contraption. Satisfied with the results, she hoisted herself shakily into the sling like device and tried to keep from toppling over. She lay back and settled herself in, taking a moment to enjoy the subtle swinging motion.

This was… nice, almost. Nearly even relaxing. Closing her eyes she let the sun wash over her, lapping up the warmth on her naked limbs. She’d picked the perfect spot to try out sunbathing in her new bikini.

“Whatcha doing Lizzie?” came the innocent voice out of nowhere.

Startled out of her reverie, Liz bolted up and the hammock rocked violentely, twisting her in its evil clutches.

Ungracefully she landed on the ground below, her left leg at an awkward angle since her sandaled foot was still tangled in the netting above her. She lifted her head up to see Maria looking down on her with something akin to a pitying exasperation in her eyes.

“Geez, Liz. Do I have to get you a helmet?”

Interlude I

Alex chose a spot close enough to the cottage where he was fairly certain he wouldn’t get lost in the surrounding wilderness but private enough that he could sit alone with his thoughts and guitar and strum a few chords. He knew that Isabel would be at the get together tonight and he wanted to make the best impression possible. It wasn’t like he had the classic good looks or a killer body to attract her interest. While the colour of his eyes or the way he filled out a t-shirt never mattered before when trying to attract someone of the opposite sex, Isabel Evans made his stomach twist and his mouth feel like it was full of marbles if he dared to say anything. Just like when he was back in third grade trying to work up the nerve to give Lisa Tamsworth a valentine and she laughed in his face. It had been the single most embarrassing moment of his public school career.

Alex had a feeling that Isabel laughing in his face would feel a whole lot worse.

Well, he couldn’t do anything about his hair or body (even though he feared that Isabel was the type to date the most popular and best looking guy in her class). Instead, he’d have to hope that his winning personality and the allure of being a musician would intrigue her, even if deep down Alex knew he wasn’t much more than a glorified band geek. It wasn’t like Alex was the lead singer of a wicked cool punk band and had 6 tattoos and a tongue piercing. He wasn’t macho and the very thought of needles scared the crap out of him.

He breathed in deep, relishing the scent of the clean fresh lake water as he cleared his mind. Maybe there was some sort of self help book he could read or something about how to be confident and impress people. Maria had to have relationship advice books somewhere. Wait ~ Maria was the last person he should go to about relationships. Shaking his head he tried to roll out the tension in his shoulders and took in the beautiful scenery around him. The piece of land that housed both Liz’s cottage and the Valenti Cabin dipped out into the lake like a crooked finger. No other homes were close for miles. Alex liked the peacefulness of the site and appreciated the serenity after the tension filled meal he’d just witnessed.

He wondered briefly if he should’ve packed some more impressive clothing. His old jeans and shirts were fine for hanging with his girls, Maria and Liz but now that he’d seen Isabel Evans, he felt insecure.

Okay, so insecure was a tad untrue.
He was freaking terrified. She was a blonde Goddess with long wavy blonde hair and perfect skin. Her deep brown eyes had sparkled with gentle mirth when he tried to get her attention at the awful barbecue earlier that day. Isabel had known exactly what kind of reaction she was getting out of him. It was evident every time she glanced his way, with one perfectly arched brow raised in amusement at his stuttering answers to her polite questions. Every time she smiled his stomach dropped and well… he was only human.

Alex had thanked the gods above for the gift of foresight when it came to packing very baggy cargo pants.

Not that the meal had actually gone over well. Kyle and Maria had gotten into a lover’s quarrel over Alex’s sexual identity crisis and the compromising position Maria had discovered Kyle in with Tess. It had only been a hug, but it could have been the comfortable way Kyle and Tess looked in each other’s arms that raised his friend’s ire. Or perhaps it was the fact that the Tess was extremely pretty and wearing one of the tiniest bathing suits Alex had ever seen. Well, eventually he’d noticed what Tess had worn for swim wear…

After all Isabel was wearing the same bikini, just in a rich red colour that made his imagination run wild.

Tess, on the other hand, had worn a deep blue that mirrored those fathomless eyes that took up so much of her small face, eyes that were filled with sadness when she had seen Alex for the first time. For an instant he had wanted to take the smaller girl by the hand and sit by the lake drinking orange soda while she told him exactly what made her so upset. She looked so lost in Kyle’s arms. Years of friendship with Maria and Liz had equipped him with an extremely sensitive emotional radar. He’d offered enough shoulders to cry on and kissed away enough boo-boos whether physical or emotional to recognize someone in pain.

Though she had quickly adopted a more sultry stance when she realized that Maria was jealous. During most of the meal, she made it her life’s work to piss off his best friend. Alex would fight to the death for his girls, but some how he didn’t think getting into the ring with Tess would help out the situation. He felt there was something else going on. Plus he had a feeling Tess would win in a fair fight. She looked like a biter.

Alex frowned to himself as he absentmindedly picked at the strings on his guitar, plucking out a favourite melody. He sang softly, nearly under his breath still trying to figure what Tess was all about when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.

A burst of colour shot through the trees that surrounded his hideaway. Hair like spun gold peeked through the branches. Instantly his stomach tightened as he wondered if it was Isabel. Then he spied the ringlets and smaller frame that only could belong to Tess Harding. What was she doing here? he wondered as he kept playing.

~*~

Angrily Tess beat every piece of nature that dared to cross her path. Wildly she pushed at stray branches and stomped offending brush beneath her sneakers. This weekend was so not going how she planned.

First of all, her former boyfriend and current best friend had found this crazy chick to date; one that had taken an instant dislike to Tess for no apparent reason.

Well, maybe she had antagonized that Maria girl just a little. After all she knew Kyle first and there was no way she was going to let some nobody with delusions of Fiona Apple grandeur tell Kyle who he can and cannot be friends with.

Hadn’t she been friends with the Buddha boy longer?? After all, she had grown up next to Kyle and Michael, literally. When her father had decided to retire from the military and concentrate on his writing his novel, he had plunked down Tess in the simple split level right beside Michael and Kyle and their father, the local Sheriff.

For the first time in her life she had a friend in Kyle and a surrogate father in Jim. For a shy girl nearing womanhood with her mother long dead and no true father to speak of, this was something new and sort of scary. At first she was as wary and hesitant with the Valenti’s as Michael had been years earlier when he first arrived. But Jim was an incredible man, one who showed her real affection by tousling her curls and setting an extra plate for dinner when he knew that Tess’ own biological father was too busy traveling on book tours to bother. Michael had kept his distance, perhaps a little jealous that Kyle and Jim had let her into his new family so quickly. Eventually she had won him over as well, though their friendship had virtually disintegrated as of late.

While Kyle, the boy next door, made it his mission to make her feel like she was part of something and their friendship that she cherished so much had grown. The summer before their sophomore year Kyle had admitted his feelings to Tess. Kyle wanted more from her and she had been willing to do anything for him even if she didn’t love him back they way he did her. Oh she tried ~ she tried so hard to care about Kyle the way he wanted her to, the way he needed her to; but she couldn’t do it. Jim had understood when she tearfully went to him for advice on how not to break his son’s heart. He had been the one to act as a buffer between Tess and Michael’s anger at his brother’s pain and he had been the one to make Kyle eventually see that it was for the best. Tess would always love Kyle, just not romantically.

Through Michael and Kyle, she had also found other friends. Isabel Evans with her perfect smile and hidden heart had taken Tess under her wing. For the first time, Tess knew what it meant to stay up late on the phone gossiping about boys and how much fun it could be to spend hours at the mall trying on clothes and eating junk food in the food court. Isabel had been a welcome relief; someone she could confide in and she trusted to keep her secrets. Spending most of their time together had let Kyle heal and kept Michael off her back. Michael adored Isabel and found it hard to refuse her anything, so when she declared that “he get over his issues and find something else to bitch about” he learned to keep his feelings for Tess buried. Obviously Tess knew he still had issues.

And then there was Max.

He was the real reason why she couldn’t give Kyle her heart. It already belonged to someone else. Even if Max didn’t know it.

Or, what hurt most, maybe he did know how she felt, but it didn’t matter to him. Sometimes Tess could see something in Max’s eyes, a hint of desire that peeked through when she brushed up against him ‘accidentally’ when they studied together or when his gaze would linger on hers through the jeep’s rear view mirror late at night after group movie outings. But nothing ever came from her crush and she didn’t have the guts to confront him outright. Nearly losing Kyle’s friendship had made her leery of romantic entanglements.

She wished she could see into Max’s head and know once and for all if he had any feelings for her, or if it was all wishful thinking on her part.

Karma was so kicking her ass for not loving Kyle Valenti the way he had wanted her to years ago. It was all Kyle’s fault really. He had to be the one to believe in balance and harmony and somewhere she knew that Michael was laughing at her.

Sighing to herself she hugged her arms around her body and wished she was anywhere but stuck at the cabin for the weekend. The thought of another fun-filled argument with Michael or watching Max eye that Liz Parker chick had her wishing she was back in her room with a big bowl of ice cream watching The Breakfast Club for the millionth time.

Then some strange noise had her jerking her head around. She wasn’t alone. Visions of serial killers and axe wielders and freaks with chainsaws burned in her brain and she panicked. Tess tried to slow hear breathing and keep her heart from exploding out of her chest. Cocking her head to the left she listened.

First she heard a faint and pleasant melody coming from somewhere close by. Followed by a soft voice, slightly unsure of it talent but pleasant enough to her ear.
The unlikely sounds calmed the crazy visions in her head and stilled her heart. Intrigued she followed the voice, stopping dead in her tracks when she came face to face with the lanky form of Alex Whitman.

Warily they faced each other. She could see Alex trying to keep his expression cool to match the one Tess was giving him.

“Got lost on the way to the lake?” she asked, breaking the silence contest first.

“Felt like some time to myself, actually.” Alex replied.

Tess shifted uncomfortably under his intense scrutiny. She knew how he must feel about her after the way she had acted towards his friend. Not that she actually cared what Liz and Maria’s friend thought.

Crossing her arms she looked away and tried her best to look bored, hoping that he wouldn’t see through her. “Sorry to interrupt what I am sure is a happening time out here by your self. If I run into any of the guys from Deliverance, I’ll be sure to send them your way.”

Satisfied with her retort she smirked and turned to leave, stopping dead in her tracks as Alex started to play “Dueling Banjos” at her retreat. Slowly she turned back around and struggled to keep from laughing out right. Only a crazy man would tempt the fates and crazy mountain men by playing that song in the wild.

He grinned charmingly at her. “River rafting never was my forte.” He motioned to the ground beside him. “Sit awhile with me?”

Tilting her head she offered a real smile and nodded before plopping down beside him.
