That's awful. Nobody has a right to treat you like that. Was it through pm here? Because you should report the person who has been attacking you to a mod, because that kind of behaviour isn't tolerated on this board.

I'm pretty busy and I don't have as much time to spend on this board as I used to. As a result, I'm reading fewer fics. I'm also a candy and so I prefer to read fics that are either candy or have a dcent candy subplot. Therefore I tend to stick to authors I know and when I try something new it's usually because that fic has been recommend to me by friends who know what I like and who have similiar tastes. I really enjoy the fics that I'm reading or I wouldn't be spending my time reading them. That's why I nominate the same fics in most categories. If none of the fics that I'm reading fit in certain categories then I don't nominate in that category.

Is what I'm doing wrong? Should I be banned from nominating fics? Should I only be allowed to nominate after I have read all the other fics that I'm not reading, even if they are fics that I won't like or enjoy because they are only dreamer fics or one of the other many reasons that I don't read certain fics?

As for only nominating current fics. I've been a member of this board for a while. I've taken part in the nominations each time they've come around. I've nominated fics that I enjoyed during those nominations. I think it's only fair to give the nominations to authors who are currently writing fic and not keep nominating the same fic over and over again each year. (We've been told that's bad apparently.)

Most awards are limited to new releases over the last 12 months. Imagine if they could vote for old films at the Oscars - Citizen Kane would keep winning even though there are really great new films too.

We totally agree with this! Nobody should tell you to shut up or other personal hurting things!!!

We were so angry when we read this, Roswellian, since we experiecned something like this a few days ago as well (NOT on this board)! Critism is okay as long as it's been told in a respectful way, but don't ever think that those persons are right when they attack you personally like this.

So I'm playing with my husband and my son and I turn my ankle, okie owie that hurts to top it off I have no ice pack so I'm stuck using the package of coffee grounds I keep in the freezer and end up getting coffee grounds on my bed. A little while later, I again chase my son and we're running through the hall and stabbing stab stab stab pain in my good foot. Somebody left their belt on the floor when they got home from work the other night and I gouged myself on the end of it taking out a nice size chunk from the middle of my foot leaving a piece of skin still attached that I can't rip off because it'll just hurt more. So then I go to the casino where I lose $12 after doubling it. Sucktastic!

I'm actually here to ask for suggestions then to complain ...

i have horrible insomnia :( I can never fall asleep and if by chance I do it only lasts for a few hours, plus every single time I do sleep for these magical two hours I have very vivid horrific nightmares. I wake up terrified, all shaky with my heart racing  realllly not fun! :|

Everyone keeps telling me to go to the doctor and get sleeping pills but I really don't feel comfortable doing that, for two reasons, one I'm afraid they will make me so out of it that I wont hear my daughter if she calls for me in the night. and two my dreams are so stressful and scary I'm afraid I wont be able to wake up immediately from them.

I sound like a big baby don't I ?

anyway I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions other then sleeping pills to get past this ansomnia problem.

thanks :)

While I don't suffer from insomnia, I can give you helpful hints and share my experience. The best thing to really combat this (and I don't agree with sleeping pills either...but that's not to say it doesn't help other people) is to make a routine and stick to it.

No electronic items what so ever an hour before bed. Hard, but really...overall, it's healthy and helpful. No computer, tv, phone, music, nothing. You need to train your mind/body that it's now time to go to bed...and so for the hour before bed, create a relaxing routine and you stick to it. It won't happen after a week, it won't happen after two weeks, not even after three weeks...but after four-five weeks and onwards it should help.

Maybe take a bath, warm glass of milk, read a book right before bed and relax. Also make your room a comfortable environment. You shouldn't be using electronic items like a laptop in bed or watching tv in bed because your mind will no longer associate your bed as a place to fall asleep, so its better to make your room just for relaxing, privacy and sleep. Another thing is if you can't let your mind relax is make a to-do list of everything you have to do tomorrow so that, that "uneasiness" of "I have so much to do tomorrow" is to put to rest now that you have a game-plan. Noise helps too, like I sleep with fan constantly since I don't like not having any sound and I also need my room pitch black.

My trouble with sleeping didn't come with insomnia but having an odd sleep cycle for the past two years of college while I've been working on my bachelors. I was taking 6 full time classes and working 30 hours a week and it screwed my times up. Because I would get up everyday at 5.30, morning run, rush to class, rush to work, work, rush back to another class, do all my volunteer and club activities...for two years my life, my schedule was 5:30 in the morning out the door and I wouldn't come home till 11.30 at night, after which I would still have homework, shower, food, and other things that I would need to take care of before staring the day all over again. I was only going on five hours of sleep a day...and while that was enough for me, doing this for two years messed with my sleeping cycle so that when the uni semester changed and my class scheduled changed and my work scheduled therefore changed, I needed to quickly change my patterns of sleep to accommodate that. And I know this sounds funny, but I didn't have time to toss and turn in bed, I needed to be out as soon as I hit the pillow and I need that to happen despite a change in my schedule and creating a routine that you have before bed is really the best best thing. Its basically training your body that you have to go to bed now.

Now its easier since I work full time and am only taking part time graduate classes, I'm not as on the go as I use be, but that's what worked for me. I know everyone's not the same, but that's my experience. I hope it helps you. Not sure about nightmares since I rarely in my life have gotten nightmares, but isn't there an old wives-tale that says eating cheese before bed gives you nightmares? So no cheese? lol, I have no idea if that's even true.

Okay well I have to agree with everything Sundae said it's basically the same thing you do with children, create a routine so that they know bed time is bed times, our bodies work the same way regardless of age. So try that because I know that also helped me.

Now a few more helpful hints and suggestions of my own. First would be melatonin I know you said you didn't want to take pills but it's something your body makes naturally and if you're body isn't making enough it makes it nearly impossible to hit REM sleep, so one of those an hour before bed should help, but unlike a sleeping pill it's not going to make you groggy when you wake up, or put you down so deep that you can't wake up to your baby if they need you. It's findable at any grocery store with the vitamins and supplements.

My other suggestion is lavender essential oil. Get a spray bottle mix a few drops in with some water and use it as a linen spray just before bed, I also recommend rubbing lavender oil into your feet before you go to sleep. It should relax you enough to hopefully prevent nightmares.

What I'm worried about with you is this doesn't sound like normal insomnia. The nightmares enough could make is so that you're actually afraid to fall asleep more than you can't. I'd go ahead and try our suggestions and if they're still not going away you may want to try talking to someone about them. Dreams can be your subconscious way of telling you something so I wouldn't ignore them.

I hope some of this helps.

Thank you so much Sundae and Ang,

Sundae you are so right about no electronics at night, since I was a teenager I haven't been able to fall asleep without the tv. This I guess could be contributing to by problem, it will be a hard habit to break but I'm willing to do anything at this point. (except take sleeping pills)

Also the same thing happened to me that happened to you with your sleep cycle getting off track. My whole life I've never had a problem with sleeping. It was truly my escape, I could drink coffee at night, take naps during the day and nothing would interfer with my ability to sleep.

Then my daughter was born, first it was the normal newborn issue of having to feed them every two hours, then when she got passed that she developed a type of asthma that only affected her when she layed down at night. She would cough and choke for hours leaving me up all night trying to help her. of course it was a rare type of asthma that was brought on by sinus infections and cigarrette smoke (which not me but all four of her grandparents were chain smokers and would often smoke around her, Im seriously not a confrontational person but I had to tell them that they would not be able to see her if they contiued to smoke around her. that was fun! )

it was years before she was correctly tested and diagnosed properly, so basically I hardly ever slept.

I will try the same time theory and silence, I have heard about food at night contributing to nightmares but its seems no matter what I do they come.

Ang,

Really I can't believe you suggested taking Melatonin, someone just bought that for me and told me the same exact thing you did, how it really just relaxes you. I may try that tonight, I know this sounds crazy but I'm almost afraid I'll sleep so deep that I'll have trouble waking from my nightmares and be stuck in them longer. I swear I wake up completely emotionally exhausted and very upset because they're so real I feel as if I really went through them. It's not like I have dreams of people killing me or something they're more like intense painful emotional situations.

Now that I'm witing it out you're right it does sound like I am completely mental. and since they happen every single time I fall asleep I definitely am afraid every night of what the hell my mind is going to come up wtih next. I can't put into words how real they are. It's really horrible. I don't remember the last time I slept past four am.

I have heard of lavender being very relaxing also, I will use that suggestion definitely.

I really appreciate your helpful suggestions Sundae and ang.

Very sweet of both of you to help me out!

Thank you both!
Carrie :)

LOL See two people have told you that it must make it right ;) You shouldn't have trouble waking up with the melatonin unless you take too many. Sometimes it does take awhile to start working so if you try it tonight and that doesn't help just don't give up. I hope you get a good's night sleep soon.
