Re: Things that made you want to bang your head against anything
Yeah Jake I always had problems with that too.
And not only is Valenti against Max but Hubble and the FBI too. Made me wonder if there was a brain between them.
Hubble automatically assumed Max was the same alien who killed his wife, even though he'd heard the story about Max saving Liz.
I'm guessing the FBI were so predisposed to think of aliens as bad because after the crash the aliens killed some army guys, and Nasedo running around killing people for 40 years, that they just thought of all aliens as bad. Or maybe they thought there was some reason Max saved Liz. Some reason he wanted or needed her alive.
Especially after Pierce had Max in the White Room, he had to know he wasn't Nasedo, but he still thought Max was trying to take over Earth or something. And Max had never done anything to harm anyone even when he was being captured.
So I can see the Special Unit's fear of aliens because of all people Nasedo killed, especially the heads of the SU. But Valenti didn't know about any of that. He just had the stories of what his father experienced, which we never got to hear about.
It would have been interesting to know what happened to him. How did he know there were shapeshifters? Did he see them himself? Or was it Hubble who told him about the shapeshifter who killed his wife? Valenti Sr. was the one who found Atherton's body, but we don't know if he saw the killing or maybe River Dog or someone else told him something.
Maybe Jim just believed that Max was the same alien who killed Atherton, and so should be brought to justice as a murderer, no matter what good he had done afterward.

Something that always bothered me was at the Summit, Max told Nicholas and the others that he wouldn't take Khivar's deal because he wouldn't give up the granolith. But when Max gets home, he tells Isabel that he didn't take the deal because it would mean leaving her and Michael on Earth. Ummm, so which is it?
Maybe Max was just saying that to Isabel as a sort of an apology?

Or maybe he just didn't want to admit to Nicholas and the others that the real reason he was turning it down was because he didn't want to leave his sister and best friend behind. It would be a sign of weakness and showing them where he's most vulnerable in case they ever decided to use it against him for any reason.

Wow, I hope that wasn't the real reason. If it was, Max isn't a very good leader.
And surely if he did make the deal, they could have negotiated about who went home. He didn't even get an answer from Michael and Isabel to see if they wanted to go home.

Re: Things that made you want to bang your head against anything
As is often the case when making big decisions, Max was probably influenced by a multitude of different reasons. He didn't have to choose just one reason why he chose not to make a deal with Kivar.
And I suppose that this is just a matter of perspective, but I think his reasons for not giving Kivar the granolith made him a good leader. He listened to both his heart and his head and therefore avoided the inevitable execution should he have travelled back to Antar and stopped an evil dictator/king from getting his hands on a powerful weapon. All excellent outcomes, so well done Max.

Why would you tell your enemies your weakness? I think it was clear in that episode that the reason why Max turned down the deal was because he couldn't leave Michael and Isabel behind. To tell Nicholas that he's not taking the deal because of his brother and sister...would give Nicholas the perfect bargaining chip in case Nicholas or Khivar went after Max.
Max was in control...he had the upper hand with the granolith and I think he played it well. He made sure to not put himself in a compromising position later. I never got the feeling that Max would ever betray Isabel or Michael...there are tension between all three of them, but all of them would die for each other.
And I actually think that that made Max a good leader (in whatever sense its applied to). Max in that time-frame only lead the two people that he's had by his side. Isabel and Michael.

I always wondered why none of them ever thought about doing more about Alex's death when they did a lot for everyone else.
Like why not try the healing stones on Alex...either? Or at least try everything before accepting his death.

Well I get the impression Alex was already long dead before they even got to him, so I don't think it would have made a difference. And as far as I remember they only ever used the healing stones on the aliens (Michael and Nacedo), so I doubt it would have done anything on a human.Sundae wrote:I always wondered why none of them ever thought about doing more about Alex's death when they did a lot for everyone else.

Max tried them on Liz though. Granted she was changed when he healed her but still...They could've at least tried them on Alex. It might have done something, or since Liz already knew the granolith could be used for time travel they could've tried to figure out how that worked so they could go back and save Alex from an untimely demise. Granted they needed to kill him off, so it was probably easier to just not even try and have to come up with explanations on why none of their plans to bring him back worked.

Besides, they used it on Michael when he was dying - when he was not quite dead. The same for Nasedo - the first time around, when he was gravely wounded.RosDude wrote:Well I get the impression Alex was already long dead before they even got to him, so I don't think it would have made a difference. Also, remember ... when Nasedo did actually die and they tried to use the stones again ... it didn't work.
Again ... Liz was alive (breathing), not already dead - i.e. no breath sounds ... no heart beat.valentinebaby wrote:Max tried them on Liz though. Granted she was changed when he healed her but still...They could've at least tried them on Alex.
Call me crazy, but dead is dead. There is no way back from death. You can try to prevent it, but once it happens, that's it. I would have been very disappointed in the series if somehow the stones could be used to bring people back from the dead. It would have felt like a serious cop out (not that they didn't take one later, that's beside the point).
