Part 9b
“Well Justin, thanks for a fun day.” Haley said, getting out of Justin’s car.
“Hey, I’m sorry about bringing up that bad stuff with your parents ok?”
“It’s fine. Really.” She smiled at him. “Bye Justin.” She turned and headed up the sidewalk to the door.
“Hales!” He yelled out the window. She walked back to his side of the car and leaned down to look in the window. “So, Kelsey is going to be out of town next weekend and you know it’s the big Homecoming dance and I figure since you were nominated for Queen and I was nominated for King… maybe we could go together?”
Haley was in shock. She had been waiting for Justin to ask her on a date forever, and as she knew this wasn’t a real date because he had a girlfriend, it was the best thing she was going to get from him.
“Are you sure?” She asked.
“Yeah, I definetly am sure I want to be at the dance with the Homecoming Queen.”
“I haven’t won yet.” She said.
He smiled. “You will.”
She hesitated a minute then replied. “Yeah Justin, I would really like to go with you.”
“Alright, well, we can figure out details later in the week. I’ll talk to you tomorrow or something ok?”
“Ok, bye.” She walked to the door smiling. This was her chance, her chance to show Justin what he was missing. And she was going to use it to her advantage.

Katelyn was moping her bed. Her mom had left and now her dad was leaving. She was just depressed. Things were always screwed up with her family. She wanted to spend the night laying in bed and eating cookies and chocolate and watching movies by herself. Basically she just wanted to spend a night pitying herself. She decided she deserved it. It had been a long 2 months and every girl deserved a night to herself. She put in She’s all That and got back in bed when the phone rang. She paused the movie and lazily reached over to her bed stand to answer. “Hello?”
“Kate you will not believe what just happened! Justin asked me to the Homecoming Dance! I’m so excited seriously Kate like things are so perfect and…”
Katelyn cut her off. “Hales, I’m not in the mood to hear about your perfect life right now ok.”
Katelyn could tell she was taken aback and felt slightly bad.
“God Kate, I’m sorry. I just wanted to tell you. Forget it, I’ll go tell my mom and dad or something geez.”
“Yeah and while you do that Haley, be happy you have them ok?”
“Katelyn! Where is this coming from? I thought you’d be happy, your mom is back!”
Katelyn rolled her eyes, even though she knew her best friend wouldn’t see it. “Haley you have no concept of anything that is not a perfect world. You have your two perfect parents who are so completely in love that is sickening. Then you have your straight A plusses and your Homecoming Queen nomination, your head cheerleader. Your life is perfect. You have no idea what I’m going through. Just because my Mom is back doesn’t mean things are great! My Dad is moving out ok. I think my parents are getting divorced. See, the main difference between us Haley is that you’re life is perfect, and mine is far from it.”
Katelyn heard only silence for a moment and then Haley spoke up.
“Well I had no idea you felt that way Kate. I’ll just take my perfect life elsewhere.”
Katelyn heard a click and rolled back over and turned the movie back on. Moping was definetly what she was going to be doing tonight.

Part 10!
Part 10
1 week later…
It was finally the night. The night of the big Homecoming football game and dance. Haley was freaking out. Her whole family was going to the game, not just because they were alumni of West Roswell High, but because Haley had a one out of six chance of being Homecoming Queen for her senior class. Normally, Homecoming Queen and popularity wasn’t a big deal to Haley. She was very aware that she was high on the social ladder for many reasons. She was funny, smart, nice, and she always had nice things because it was no secret that the Evans had a lot of money. Haley had gone through her whole life wanting nothing and essentially living, as Katelyn had stated so bluntly, a perfect life.
This night however was the single most important night in her adolescent life. She was going to the Homecoming Dance with her best friend, and more importantly, the boy she had been in love with for many years. This was her last chance to convince Justin that they were meant to be together. This was her only chance. Yeah, Justin had a girlfriend but all Haley could think was ‘All’s fair in love and war’, and that was the attitude that she had for the night.
“Haley, here’s your dress honey. It’s all ironed and altered and all that fun stuff.”
“Thanks Mom.”
Liz smiled at Haley. “Honey, even if you don’t win, you know me and your dad are really proud of you. You are an accomplished young woman and we could not have asked for more from you.”
Haley hugged Liz. “Thanks Mom, it means a lot to me. I know things haven’t been easy with Hayden.”
“Well, Hayden is in Boston now. He’ll be better soon.”
“Yeah, he will.”
“Ok, well you need to get ready.”
Liz walked downstairs and into the kitchen where Kyle, Isabel, and Max were. They were all sitting around the kitchen table and Liz joined them.
“Liz, this is so exciting for Haley. I’m so excited for her.” Isabel said.
“You must be Isabel, you and Kyle were supposed to stay for 4 days and you’ve been here about two weeks! Not that we don’t love having you because we do, but what about work and the kids. Don’t they need to be in school.” Liz replied.
“Well, we’ve actually been meaning to tell you.” Kyle started.
“What?” Max asked. Very curious as to what his brother in law was getting at. It was funny all the drama Max and Kyle had gone through in the past over Liz and he ended up marrying Isabel and the two men were very close good friends. Max sometimes looked at the irony of the situation.
“Well, Isabel and I have decided to move back to Roswell. We really want to raise the kids here to be close to their family and we just really miss it here.” Kyle explained.
“That’s great!” Liz exclaimed. “I mean, wow, when did you decide this?”
“Well we had been thinking about it ya know for a long time, and just being back here with everything, it became clear to us.” Isabel told them.
“Isabel and I are going back Monday to start packing and you know put the house up for sell and all the formalities. I’ve already talked to my partners about this and they completely support me. Anyway, the kids are going to stay with Diane and Phillip for a little while and then with my Dad and Amy. We want to register them for school and get them started as soon as possible. So Alex and Sarah will be staying here and we are taking Skylar with us obviously. Then we’ll be back on weekends and hopefully be settled in a few weeks.”
“Wow! You have this all thought out and none of us even knew!” Max was happy his sister would be closer to home.
“Yeah. Well, we wanted it to be a surprise.” Isabel said.
“So are Michael and Maria coming to the game? What’s going on with them?” Kyle asked.
“Well…” Liz started, “I know Michael is going with us and I’m pretty sure he’s bringing Aaron. You know, I really don’t know what Maria is doing tonight.”
* * *
Michael started up the stairs into the kitchen when he heard talking. He stopped to listen.
“I wish those two would just get back together. Always one with the drama ya know.” Kyle said.
“I know what you mean. Maria was so upset when she came over that night. I can’t even imagine what happened. She never did tell me.” Liz added. “I’ve never seen Maria that upset, and we’ve been friends forever. Something really bad must have happened when she went to talk to Michael.”
“Obviously, since he moved in the next day.” Max said.
“I’m sure they’ll work it out guys. They always do.” Isabel told them. “And if they don’t… it’s going to be hell on their kids. I mean it’s obvious he still loves her. It’s just a matter of trust now.”
Michael retreated back downstairs and grabbed his coat. He had something he had to do.

Michael knocked on the door quietly then stepped back a little. He waited a few seconds and then the door swung open. Maria answered, just as he had hoped.
“Michael…” Maria said.
“Can I come in?” He asked.
“Oh.. Yeah of course.” She said. He followed her in and they sat down at the kitchen table.
“Did you need something?” She asked.
“Yeah, actually… I have been thinking a lot. I’ve been thinking about how your actions were selfish and damaging to the whole family. About how you were so wrong in what you did.”
Maria got up and started to leave. “I don’t need this Michael, I’ve heard it ok?”
“I’m not done. Sit down and shut up!”
Maria did as she was told.
“Anyway, as I was saying, you were wrong. But the whole time you were gone all I could think about was how much I missed you and how much I wanted to hold you when you got back. Then seeing you, it was like.. I just blew up, all the emotions I’d been holding in, finally came out.”
“Michael, I’m sorry. I’ve told you that.”
“I’m still not done. I came here tonight because I’ve decided I’m ready to give it another chance.” Maria smiled and Michael continued. “But you have to understand, I forgive you Maria, but I’ll never forget. The damage you created is going to take a long time to repair.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“No more sorry. It’s time to start over ok?” He told her.
“Ok.”
* * *
The bathroom was packed with the six homecoming queen candidates in formal wear getting ready for their big debut and then the announcement of who the winner would be. Haley checked her makeup and thought about the next events of the evening.
All the girls would line up center field with their parents behind the marching band because they would perform first. Then they would be introduced and a short paragraph would be read about their activities throughout school. After that the girls would be given to their dates and they would line up facing the stands that the home team sits in. The winner would be called and all the girls will smile and hug the winner and pretend to be happy for her. After that the five losers retreat to the bathroom and maliciously bash the winner and talk about how she shouldn’t have won. All in the meantime the King and Queen would be crowned and standing on the field with their parents and the school administrators so excited. That was tradition.
Haley was getting hot and felt sick so she exited the bathroom. She was really paying attention to where she was going and slammed right into Katelyn.
“Haley!”
“Kate! I’m so sorry! I wasn’t paying attention. I’m sorry!”
Katelyn laughed. “It’s ok Hales and I’m sorry about the other night. I was way out of line.”
“No it’s fine really.”
The two best friends hugged. “Oh my God you look so hot!” Katelyn exclaimed after they parted. Haley’s dress was very elegant it was cream with gold accents that brought out her natural New Mexico tan. Her long dark brown hair, inherited from her mother, was swept into an updo.
Haley laughed. “Thanks Katy. I’m really nervous.”
“Psshaw! You have nothing to be nervous of! You are going to win that crown!”
“Thanks, but I have to go. I’ll talk to you after!”
“Ok, well good luck and that crown is yours babe!”
Haley smiled at Katelyn then headed for the field to meet up with her parents and watch the end of the band show.
* * *
Haley stood in line between her parents. She was shaking, she was so nervous. She hadn’t seen Justin all night and she knew that this was her big chance to win him over. Haley was third in line and the girl in front of her had just been called.
“Haley, we want you to know, we are so proud of you no matter what.” Liz told her.
“We love you.” Max said.
“I love you too.”
Then it was time.
“Haley Marie Evans is a four year member of the Roswell High cheerleading squad, being named captain her senior as well as her junior year. She’s also been a member of student council and is currently the senior class president. She’s a 2 year member of National Honor Society and is 5th in her class. She is being escorted tonight by Homecoming King candidate Justin Williams. Justin is a four year member of the football team and also a member of National Honor Society and Student Council. Ladies and Gentlemen Haley Evans and Justin Williams.”
Max and Liz lead Haley down the center of the field and then she went with Justin and they stood together next to the other couples.
“You look really pretty Hales.” He whispered to her.
“Thanks.” She smiled.
They waited impatiently throughout the other three girls.
“Ladies and gentlemen please give a huge round of applause for all of our candidates.”
The audience clapped and cheered.
“It’s now time to announce the winner. Drumroll please.” The drummer from the band started.
Haley was shaking and Justin looked over at her. “Don’t be nervous you’ve got this.”
She smiled thankfully at him. Then he did something unexpected. He grabbed her hand and didn’t let go.
“And the winner is…”
Michael knocked on the door quietly then stepped back a little. He waited a few seconds and then the door swung open. Maria answered, just as he had hoped.

Part 12
Part 12
“Ladies and gentlemen, your Homecoming Queen and King for West Roswell high class of 2023 are Justin Williams and Haley Evans!”
Haley was in shock. Did she just really hear what she thought she heard. Did her and Justin just become Homecoming King and Queen? She looked over at him and he was smiling. She must have heard right. The crowd was cheering and all of a sudden 5 other girls were surrounding her congratulating her. They moved out of the way when last years Homecoming Queen walked towards her to present her with the crown. The next few minutes were absolute chaos. She wasn’t even sure what was happening. She knew her parents hugged her and all the other girls hugged her. She knew she talked to everyone and got her picture taken a million times, but that was really all.
They were all finally pushed off the field so the remainder of the game could be played. When she was finally free of the cameras and the people wanting to hug her she took a deep breathe and looked at Justin. “Wow. That was … chaotic.”
He laughed, “It really was. Congratulations.”
She smiled slightly. “Thank you, you too.”
“Haley!!!!” She heard and then there was more hugging. “I knew you were going to win, I just knew it!” Katelyn told her excitedly.
Haley laughed. “Oh Katy.” Was all she could say. The whole thing was just really overwhelming and she kind of just wanted to sit down and get away from people for awhile. She knew once the rest of the family saw her, she would be talking and getting pictures for the rest of the game.
“Oh Hales, guess what. Guess who came to the game together!”
“Who?” Haley asked.
“My parents! My dad is moving back in this weekend!”
“Oh, Kate, I’m so happy. I knew things would be fine!”
Katelyn was really happy. “Yeah, I’m just really glad.”
“Me too.” Haley said. “Well let’s go sit down and watch the rest of the game.”
The three friends headed to the bleachers where Haley’s family was awaiting her.
* * *
“Well Justin, thanks for everything.” Haley said when he pulled into her driveway.
“I had a lot of fun tonight Hales, I’m glad we went together.” He told her.
She smiled at him. “Me too.”
She grabbed her purse and her flowers and opened the door to get out. She was struggling with all of her things and Justin quickly got out and went to the other side of the car to help her. “I’ll walk you to the door.”
They walked to the door slowly in silence. When they finally got there Haley was disappointed that the evening had gone so fast, but happy that her and Justin could spend time together.
“Well… I’ll see you Monday.” He told her. He was shifting his weight from side to side and Haley wondered why he was being so fidgety.
“Yeah, see ya.” She turned to open the door.
“Haley…” Justin said.
She turned back around. “Yeah?”
He didn’t say anything. He grabbed her arm and pulled her to him and kissed her. She was shocked at first and then excited. A million things started running through her head at that moment, but she pushed them all aside and kissed the boy she had been in love with for so many years. The kiss lasted only a few seconds and then Justin pulled away.
They stood looking at each other for a moment and Justin finally spoke up. “I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.”
“It’s ok. Really…”
“Um… look I have to go home and think about stuff… but I’ll call you tomorrow ok?”
She shook her head in agreement… ok… talk to you tomorrow.”
Justin went to his car and Haley went into the house in a daze. Justin, the love of her life, had just kissed her on her front porch. She had just been named Homecoming Queen. Could her life get any better?
“Ladies and gentlemen, your Homecoming Queen and King for West Roswell high class of 2023 are Justin Williams and Haley Evans!”

* * *

Part 13A
::Ok, I jumped ahead a few days in the story because basically, I felt as though it was dragging. So this next part is divided into five different parts and are all named. This is it, what the whole story is about… The next parts are really sad. I just wanted to forewarn you that it may get a little dark. You have been warned.::
The Grieving Process
Part 13 : The Five Stages of Grief
Part A : Denial
Tuesday - 4 days after Homecoming
Haley was cold. Her whole body was shaking. She wrapped her arms around her to try to warm herself but it was pointless. Nothing on Earth could take away the cold that inhabited her body. She looked around her at all the people. Schoolmates, family, friends… all standing around. Some were crying, some were laughing. She saw her Mom and Dad talking to Michael and Maria. She wasn’t sure where Katelyn had gone. She said something about getting Haley… something. She couldn’t remember what. It wasn’t important… nothing was.
Another chill ran through Haley’s body. She couldn’t believe that she was here. That this was her life. How could everything go from being absolutely perfect to this. To cold and alone. One millisecond and life was over. It just couldn’t be happening. Not to her.
“Hey Hales. I got you some water and some crackers. You should eat something.” Katelyn said, sitting down next to her best friend.
That was where she went, Haley remembered now. She took a cracker and nibbled at it, then took a small sip of water. That was enough. She felt like she was going to throw up. She handed the items back to Katelyn and slouched back on the couch.
“Haley, you really need to eat.”
“I’m not hungry Kate.” Those were the first words Haley had spoken in an hour. She turned her head away from the food and stared at the ceiling. She noticed that it was slanted and had a textured type of finish. Ceilings weren’t something Haley usually noticed. Although Haley wasn’t usually at a funeral home either. She decided that there’s a first time for everything. At first she couldn’t remember how she ended up here, then it became perfectly clear.
Saturday Night - The night after Homecoming
"He kissed you?" Katelyn shrieked. “Oh my God... What about Kelsey those two have been together for like ever..."
"They are... it was an accident. It's nothing Katy..."
"Nothing! You've been in love with him since like 4th grade you say it's nothing! He kissed you! What's wrong with you... make your move!
“Katelyn! He said he would call me today and he didn’t. I’m going to assume he’s trying to figure out how to tell me it was a mistake.”
“I dunno… I think he likes you.” Katelyn teased.
“He does not, shut up!” Haley said back.
The girls began to laugh when Haley heard the doorbell ring. Her and Katelyn got quiet so they could hear who it was.
They didn’t hear talking for a while, then all of a sudden they heard glass shatter. They two best friends ran down the stairs to the foyer where Liz was standing. Haley saw that she had dropped a glass and it had shattered all over the floor.”
“Mom? What’s going on?” Haley asked nervously.
She turned to the door to see Justin’s mom standing there. “Mrs. Williams?”
"Haley... we have some bad news."
“What are you talking about?” She asked.
Justin’s mom began to talk. “Justin was driving home from Las Cruces this afternoon and he got in to a car accident.”
“Well is he ok? Can I see him?”
Justin’s mom began to sob and Liz finished for her. “Honey, you can’t see Justin. He… He’s dead. Honey, I’m so sorry. He pulled out in…”
Haley didn’t hear anything past dead. Her head was a whirlwind. Justin was dead? How could that even be possible? Just yesterday they had been named Homecoming King and Queen and he had kissed her. He was supposed to call her to talk about the kiss. She looked down at the shattered glass and saw how pretty it was when the light bounced off of it. She kept watching until it started to make her sick.
Haley started walking and felt dizzy. She grabbed the stair banister and tried to hold herself up. She heard Katelyn sobbing in the background and saw her mom talking to Justin’s mom. She turned her head when everything started circling around her. Everything was a blur and the crying and talking became really loud. Then it was all quiet and dark and Haley didn’t feel so dizzy or sick anymore.
* * *
“Haley? Are you ok?” She heard her Father talking to her. She opened her eyes and looked around to realize she was in her bed. What happened she thought as she felt the back of her head pulse with pain. She reach back and felt a bump. I must have fallen she thought.
She tried to sit up but that didn’t feel too well so she laid back down. “Daddy? What happened?”
“You fell Honey. You’re going to be ok. You just fell.”
She saw her mother talking on the phone and she remembered she was expecting a call.
“Mom, if someone beeps in answer it. Justin is supposed to call me.”
Both her parents gave her a sad look. It was then that she noticed Katelyn and Jon - Paul standing in the corner. Katelyn was crying softly and Jon - Paul had a sad, worried look on his face.
“Katy! What’s wrong? Come here.” She motioned for Katelyn to come towards her and she did.
Haley reached out her arms to hug her best friend. “Did something happen with your parents?” Haley asked.
Katelyn began to cry harder. “Haley, don’t you remember.”
“Remember what?” Haley asked.
“Justin died Hales. He died in a car accident. His mom came over to tell us and you passed out.”
“No. No he didn’t die Katelyn. That’s not funny.” Haley exclaimed.
Max put his hand on her arm. “Haley. Katelyn’s not kidding. Justin is dead.”
“Dad! Stop! This isn’t funny. Give me the phone, I’m going to call his cell phone. He’s fine. He’s going to answer and then I’m going to tell him how stupid you guys are to think he’s dead. Then he’s going to laugh at you.”
Haley reached for her cell phone that was lying next to her bed. She dialed Justin’s number and held the phone to her ear.
“Hey! This is Justin! I can’t get to my phone right now so leave me a message and I’ll get back to you! Bye!”
Haley hung up the phone and set it next to her. “He always has his cell phone on. He always has it on.” She cried. Then she remembered. She had been talking to Katelyn. She heard the doorbell and then the shattering glass. Then the news. Justin was dead. He was really dead.
“No!” she screamed. “No… No…” Then she started sobbing. “No.”

Part 13B
The Grieving Process
Part 13: The Five Stages of Grief
Part B: Anger
Tuesday - The Funeral Home
Kelsey saw her sitting alone on a couch. Katelyn had been there for a while with crackers and water but Haley refused them. She just sat there staring at the ceiling or the floor. Sometimes she would fidget, but for the most part she sat perfectly still and stayed silent. She hadn’t even cried.
Kelsey didn’t take the fact that Justin had died very well. They had been dating for almost two years and they had been really close. But she knew that of all people, Haley would take it the worst.
Haley and Kelsey had for about 2 months been very close. Kelsey had felt accepted into her and Justin and Katelyn’s little group of friends. For years she watched the three travel around together. Kelsey was a year older than them, and had met Haley her sophmore year when Haley made the cheerleading squad. They both cheered together, but didn’t become good friends until the summer before Kelsey’s senior year. That was when she realized she had feelings for Justin. Everyone at West Roswell High knew that Haley was in love with him. So Kelsey became close to Haley hoping she’d get her approval to date Justin. Haley had been a good sport about the whole thing, but when she felt her and Justin’s friendship being threatened she pushed them both away.
Haley and Justin patched things up rather quickly, but Kelsey and Haley would never be close again. Haley felt too betrayed and Kelsey felt too scared. Scared that one day Justin would wake up and realize Haley was what he wanted. Then it happened.
Kelsey looked back over at her. She hadn’t moved. Kelsey took a deep breath and walked towards her and sat down.
“Hey Hales.” She said quietly. “How ya holding up?”
“Fine.. I’m fine.” Haley said, not looking at Kelsey. “How are you?”
“I’m ok.”
Haley still kept staring.
The two girls sat in silence for a moment and then Kelsey spoke up. “Haley, I know how close you were with him. If you need to talk to anyone, I’m here for you ok?”
Haley shook her head, showing Kelsey that she had heard her. Kelsey sighed. “Haley… you have to snap out of this. I know you’re upset, but this is not healthy.
“Healthy? You want healthy?” Haley finally turned to look at Kelsey and she looked angry. “My best friend just died. Justin and I have been friends forever. I can’t remember a time that we were friends. And now he’s gone. He’s dead and I’m never going to see him again. I don’t really fucking care about healthy. I’ll deal with this on my own. I’m a big girl.” Haley turned back around to stare at the ceiling and Kelsey, although taken aback, smiled. “That was healthy. You‘re supposed to be angry.” She said and went to talk to more people.
Haley took her attention away from the ceiling and looked back at all the people. The viewing was to be from two to five and then again at seven to nine. It was only 3:30 and Haley was going to be at both viewings the whole time. She felt like she owed it to the Williams family as well as to Justin.
Haley had been sitting on the couch since she arrived at the funeral home at two. She hadn’t talked to anyone, she hadn’t moved from her spot. She knew that if she started to move and interact with people she would lose it, and she just couldn’t lose it. She was the strong one. She held everyone together. That was just who she was. She couldn’t fall apart in front of these people. She wouldn’t let them see her cry. Never.
“Haley?” Her mother said walking towards her. “Justin’s Mom and Dad really want you to come talk to them.”
“I don’t want to right now.” Haley said softly.
“Haley…”
“Mom, I don’t want to. Why won’t everyone just leave me alone!” She snapped.
“Fine, I’m sorry.” Liz walked away remembering herself in the same situation. When Alex had died she pushed everyone away, trying to find his killer. She thought that would be dealing with her emotions. But she never completely dealt with them until Tess was dead. Then it was like she was released.
“How’s she doing?” Max asked, coming up behind Liz.
Liz turned towards her husband. “She’s too young to deal with this… too young Max. And it’s so hard for me to be here, I just keep remembering Alex and… I never wanted our children to go through what we did Max.” She leaned into him and he put his arms around her.
“I know Liz, I know.” Max thought back to when he had tried to heal Alex. How there was all that blood and he wasn’t able to do it. Of course, Tess was the real killer not a car accident, but Max felt so helpless. Like he did now, like he knew his daughter did. Superpowers aren’t the answer.

Saturday Night - The Evan’s House - The Night After Homecoming
“Daddy, please. Please. Ask Sheriff Valenti! He’ll help. Daddy please.” Haley begged her Father.
“Haley, I can’t. You know I can’t. It’s too much of a risk, I can’t put everyone in danger.” He tried to explain.
“If it was me or Mom or Michael or Isabel you would do it. If it was any of us. Dad… I’m begging you.”
“I’m sorry Haley, I can’t. I wish I could make this go away, but there is nothing I can do.”
“There is something, you just choose not too, I hate you.” Haley stormed up to her room and slammed the door.
Max looked as though he had been shot. To hear his little girl say that was like killing him. He looked sadly at Liz.
“She didn’t mean it Max. She’s just upset. Her best friend just died. She loves you.” Liz said trying to comfort him.
“I know, I just… I wish I could do something Liz, I really do. But you know I can’t.”
“I know. And in time, she’ll realize it too.”

Tuesday - The Funeral Home
Max shuddered as he remembered the words his daughter had said to him. She still hadn’t spoken to him which worried Max. Haley was always so happy and to see her so sad… he couldn’t take it.
“Hayden and Brighton should be in town for tonight’s viewing. I know Hayden was pretty upset. The last time he saw Justin they got into a fist fight.” Max said.
“I know, I just hope he’s doing better than Haley. She needs him right now.”

Part 13C
A/N: As you can see I’m using the 5 stages of grief as my basis for these parts. Even though the stages are separated and the parts are separated by the different stages, I still believe that they are intertwined. So even though this is Bargaining, you will still see Haley be caught in the other stages as well.
The Grieving Process
Part 13 : The Five Stages of Grief
Part C : Bargaining
The crowd was thinning as it became time for the two hour break. Katelyn had gone off with some kids from school to get dinner and Haley opted to stay behind. She wanted to go home and rest for awhile. She stood up to find her parents and located them talking to Maria, Michael, Isabel and Kyle. She approached them and tapped her mother on the shoulder. “Can we go home for awhile?” She asked.
Max handed her the keys to the car. “We’re going to get dinner, but you can take the car and we’ll get a ride.”
Haley threw the keys back at Max. “I’ll walk.” She snapped, then turned around and started to leave.
“Haley, I’ll take you home. If you want me too.” He said going after her.
“It’s fine Dad, I said I’ll walk. Bye.”
Max sighed and put the keys back into his pocket. He was at a loss as to what to do for his daughter.
“I should have known better. I knew she didn’t wanna drive.” He told them as he walked back to the group.
“Max, you can’t do this. She’s hurting and she’s angry at the world. It’s not your fault. We are doing the best we can for her.” Liz said embracing her husband.
“I know.” He mumbled into her hair.
“Look Max, don’t get too worked up over it. We all know what it feels like to go through this.” Michael told him.
“Yeah, you know, Liz went through a similar situation with Alex.” Isabel said.
Liz looked at her friends remembering the whole Alex thing. “I did, didn’t I?”

Haley walked slowly down the streets of Roswell with her hands tucked in her pockets. She wasn’t sure where she was heading but she ended up in front of the Roswell Community Church. She walked up to it and pulled on the big, heavy, wooden doors. She quietly made her way into the empty sanctuary and took a seat in the front row. Haley had been to church almost every Sunday of her life. She always came with her mother and the younger kids. Occasionally her dad or Hayden would come, but usually not. In all of Haley’s eighteen years, she had never sat in the front row before. This was something new.
She sat quietly for a long time just thinking, but after a while she started to whisper. “I thought that if I came to church you’d be able to hear me better. Because I have a lot to say to you. How could you? How could you take away Justin. He was the greatest person. He would have done anything for anyone. And you took him. You took from me. It’s not fair.” Her voice became louder. “Don’t you think about all the people you are hurting. Justin’s parents lost their only child and Kelsey lost her boyfriend. And I lost my best friend.” She got quiet again. “I loved him. Why didn’t you take me instead. I would do anything if you would send him back to me. Please. Make this all be a dream. Take me instead, I don’t care, just don’t make me live without him. I can’t.” Throughout her whole speech her voice never wavered. There was never a tear in her eye. After she was done she got up and quietly left, like nothing had happened. She again opened the big, heavy, doors and then checked her watch. She still had an hour before she had to be back, so she started for home.

The Evans’ house was only a 10 minute walk. She got out her keys and started to unlock the door when a car pulled up in the driveway. She turned around to see her brothers getting out of the car.
“Haley, how are you?” Brighton asked, walking up to her. He put his arms around her, but she didn’t hug him back.
“I’m fine.” She said plainly.
He pulled away from her. “Where’s Mom and Dad?”
“Dinner.” She turned back to go inside. She unlocked the door and escaped to her room.
“Sounds like she’s doing well.” Hayden said walking in the house.
“Now is not the time to be a smart ass ok?” Brighton told him. “Get what you need, I’m going to talk to Haley.”
Hayden went up to his room to find a nice outfit and Brighton knocked on Haley’s door.
“What?” She asked from inside.
“Can I come in?” Brighton asked, opening the door slightly.
“Whatever.” She said. She was sitting at her desk in front of her computer typing something.
“Whatcha typing?” He asked.
She minimized the screen quickly. “Nothing. Do you want something?”
“I wanna know how you are.” He asked.
“I’m just fucking peachy ok! My best friend just died. How the hell do you think I am. Jesus.” She turned back to the computer.
“You know, I know you are upset. Maybe it would help if you talked to Mom or Maria. They went through the same thing you did when Alex died.” He suggested.
“Yeah, it was your Mom who killed him too.” She snapped.
Brighton stared at his little sister. “Where did that come from?” He asked.
“I’m sorry. Just leave me alone.” She grabbed her coat and started to leave.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“Back to the funeral home.”
“I think maybe you just need to rest.” He told her.
“Bye Bright.”

The Grieving Process
Part 13: The 5 Stages of Grief
Part D: Depression
Wednesday - Roswell Community Church
“Haley!” Kelsey called from behind her. She was walking into the church with her family and Katelyn when she heard the older girl call her name. She turned towards the crowd behind her and saw Kelsey pushing her way to the front.
“Hey Kelsey.” Haley said.
Kelsey reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a crumpled envelope. She handed it to Haley. “This is for you. The police found it in Justin’s car. His parents wanted you to have it.”
Haley took the envelope from Kelsey and stared at her name on the outside of it. “What is it?” She asked.
“It’s a letter. A letter he wrote to you the day he died. Don‘t worry, no one read it.”
“Thank you.” Haley said. She turned back to join her family when Kelsey stopped her.
“He thought the world of you, you know. Even when we were together, I knew I’d never be able to compete with you. He was in love with you, he just wouldn’t admit it to himself.”
Kelsey walked off to rejoin her family and Haley did the same.
“What’s that?” Liz asked, when Haley caught up to them.
“I don’t know.” She said. “Go get a seat, I’ll be in. Just give me a second.”
“Ok. We’ll save you a seat.” Max said.
Haley walked over to a bench and sat down.ok the letter in her shaking hands and started to slowly open the envelope. She pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it. Her name appeared at the top of the paper along with the date. Just as Kelsey had said, it was dated the day he died.
Haley ~ I know that things have been really confusing lately. I blame myself, I should have been straight up with you a long time ago. Today Kelsey and I came to the realization that our relationship is not working. As much as I thought I wanted things to work with her, It came as a relief to me that she agreed we should break up. So you’re wondering what the hell this has to do with you, I’m sure…
Haley finished the letter and then quickly folded it up and put it back in the envelope. She shoved it in her pocket and hurried into the church, so she wasn’t late.
* * *
Max looked at his daughter as she sat in complete silence during the funeral. She just stared blankly at the events surrounding her. Max was nervous. He knew today was going to be the worst day, but he hoped maybe Haley would be better, but she wasn’t.
Max had never seen his daughter like this. She was so closed off and he had no idea what would snap her back into reality. He felt helpless. Max hated that feeling.
The funeral was beautiful and as it was coming to an end, the minister asked for anyone that would like to, to come up and say a few words about Justin. Max saw Kelsey stand up, as well as Hayden. He saw a few guys from the football team stand up. But to his biggest surprise he saw Haley get up. He didn’t figure she would be much for talking in front of a big group of people. She didn’t even want to talk to him or Liz or Katelyn. But there she was walking up to the front along with the other kids. She took her place at the back of the line and waited patiently for her turn.
Hayden was in line before Haley. Kelsey and the other football players said their eulogies and Hayden stood behind the pulpit and took a deep breath. “Justin and I grew up together. He was really close with me and my twin sister Haley, and her best friend Katelyn so the four of us were kind of inseperable until the beginning of high school. We started to go our separate ways when we became sophomores, but we still kept in touch. Justin was a great friend and the thing that I think I’ll always remember about him, is that he cared so much about people and their well being. I always admired how trusting he was. He always let you speak your mind and he’d just listen. I also know how much he cared for Kelsey and my sister in particular. One night a few weeks ago, I was in some major trouble. I was being a complete jerk and I said some awful things. Justin was there putting me in my place. Justin and I never made peace after that fight, but I’m hoping that he knows how sorry I am. He was my best friend and I’ll never forget him.” Hayden stepped down. He knew he was supposed to go back to his seat, but Haley was next and he had a feeling she would need some support.
Haley stepped up to the pulpit and pulled out a piece of paper. She set it on the stand and ran her hand over it, as to flatten it out.
“Hi, I’m Haley Evan’s. I … um… I wrote this letter to Justin. There’s a copy in his casket and it’s going to be buried with him, but I just wanted to read it, if that’s ok.” Haley cleared her throat and looked down. She took a breath and then looked at her paper.
“Justin, well… this has been an interesting week. The most traumatizing event of my life, and you aren’t here to help me through it. You’re somewhere else, somewhere else entirely and I feel like you are so far away. I can’t call you, I can’t run into you at school. I talk to you, I’ve talked to you a million times this week, but you never answer. This morning I got out of bed and I saw this picture of Katelyn, Hayden, you, and me. We had to have been like 6. I smiled, thinking about everything that we had been through. I remembered when we were 11, we went ice skating, and you fell down and broke your leg. They had to do surgery, and I remember crying for hours because you were in the hospital. I was so scared. But you called me that night and laughed about how the jell-o was really gross at the hospital. So me and my Mom and Katelyn and Maria made some good jell-o and brought it to you.”
Haley paused for a moment, then continued. “That night, when when I was sitting by your bed, at the hospital. It was just the two of us, and we laughed and joked. But then you said something. You told me that no matter what, we had to die together, because there was no living without each other. We were best friends. You promised never to leave me here without you.” Haley felt her eyes well up with tears. “You promised, and now I’m here alone. I’m here without you. So now I’m asking myself why? Why did you have to break that promise? Why couldn’t you have just stayed at Kelsey’s one minute longer? Why didn’t you pay more attention to the road. Why did that semi driver get drunk. WHY?”
Haley was visibly crying now, and she started to quietly sob. Hayden went to her and tried to take the letter, to finish it.
“No! I want to do this, I can do this myself.” She took the letter back and sniffled.
She felt Hayden grab her hand. “Those are the question I’ve been asking myself this past week, and I have no answer. I’ll never understand why God would take you from your parents, from your family, from me. I know that my questions will never be answered, but maybe in time, I’ll find some closure. I hope that heaven is as wonderful as it is supposed to be. I was wondering if you could do me one last favor.” She sighed and looked at her family. “Give my Great Grandma Claudia a hug and kiss for my mom, and give Alex Whitman a hug for my whole family”
Haley heard her Mom, Maria, and Isabel start to cry. “And if you ever see Tess Harding, give her a kiss for Brighton. And don’t forget to save me a seat. One day I’ll be with you again.”
At this point most of the congregation was crying openly. Hayden himself was crying. Haley had one more thing to add.
Haley pulled out the envelope Kelsey had given her earlier and took the letter out. “You wrote me this letter the day you died. The end of it says.
‘Last night I finally realized how much I really just love you. You’re smart, funny, kind, and on top of all of that you are beautiful. You’ve been my best friend since forever and I can’t imagine my life without you. So as much as I value our friendship, I hope that we can turn it into something else, because you’re the only girl I can see myself with. Take time to think about it and get back to me.’
“Well, I just want you to know, that I love you too. I’ve always loved you, for my whole life. I don’t think anyone will ever be to me what you were. Thank you for everything you’ve done.
I love you.
Haley

The Grieving Process
Epilogue : Acceptance
You’ll never know what you’ve done for me
What your faith in me has done for my soul
And you’ll never know the gift you’ve given me
I’ll carry it with me…
August 25th, 2024
Journal Entry One: My name is Haley Evans and I’ve never written in a journal. I always thought that they were childish, and I was always too mature for them. But my mom convinced me that I should write in one, after the past year’s events. A little less than a year ago, my best friend died. I think that this past year has been the most traumatic of my life, as well as the one where I learned the most. I always believed that school would teach you everything. I went through 12 years of school being the smartest girl in my class, and it still didn’t prepare me for Justin’s death.
When I look back at the past year I think to myself, ‘Haley, how did you get through it?’ But I know the answer. He’s here. He’s always here. I can feel him in the little things I do. Like when Katelyn and I went ice skating a few months after his death, Or when I’d put on my Homecoming Queen crown. When I smile, when I laugh. It’s like I can sense him. It’s weird, I can’t really explain it, but I know that I’ll always have him watching over me.
Through the days ahead
I’ll think of days before
You made me hope for something better
And made me reach for something more…
Katelyn and I are in college now. We both got accepted into UCLA and we are rooming together. Katelyn wants to be an artist just like Michael. I’m going to be a doctor. A surgeon. I want to be able to help people like Justin. I don’t want anyone to go through what Justin’s family did, what I did. I love UCLA so far, but I’ve only been here a week. Mom cried, Maria cried, even Isabel cried. It was such a happy day for me and Katy, to be going off, living our dreams
It’s easier to not be in Roswell. It’s easier to forget the bad times, the pain. But as much as I think about that, I could never forget him. He’s apart of me, he always will be. I love him just as much now as I did before, and even though the pain has lessened, I know that it’ll will always be with me.
You taught me to run
You taught me to fly
Helped me to free the me inside
Helped me hear the music of my heart
Helped me hear the music of my heart
You opened my eyes
You opened the door
To something I had never known before
And your love is the music of my heart.
I still carry around that letter that Kelsey gave me at Justin’s funeral. I keep it in my wallet, as embarrassed as I am to admit that to anyone. When I get sad, or I miss him, I read that letter and for some reason, it makes it all better.
Kelsey is still attending Las Cruces University. She’s doing really good and she even has a new boyfriend. Justin’s death brought the two of us closer than I ever thought we would be. After Justin’s funeral when I broke down, she just hugged me and we cried together for hours. She’s one of my best friends now, and I can’t imagine dealing with any of this without her.
Justin’s death took away so much from my life, but it gave me so much too. It gave me a friendship with Kelsey, it gave me a sense of direction with my life, but mostly it gave me hope. I know that sounds funny, that the passing of my best friend gave me hope, but it did.
You were the one always on my side
Always standing by
Seeing me through
You are the song that always makes me sing
I’m singing it for you
Every where I go
I’ll think of where I’ve been
And of the one who knew me better
Than anyone ever will again.
Hope isn’t a word that I could say for a long time. Then at Graduation, I was standing there, giving my valedictorian speech and I felt it. Something I hadn’t felt in a long time. Hope. It came in the form of a light spring breeze that felt… warm. And I realized that Justin’s love, was with me, it was like the wind. I would always feel it, even if I couldn’t ever see it. That day was the start of my brand new life.
So now here I am, sitting in my dorm room. Katelyn’s off meeting the guys because we got on the co-ed floor. I’ll have to keep that from Dad and Michael. Katelyn is so excited about college and about art. It’s so great to see the life in her. Just like her mother. She so full of energy and I thank God everyday that I have her to remind me to keep living.
You taught me to run
You taught me to fly
Helped me to free the me inside
Helped me hear the music of my heart
Helped me hear the music of my heart
You opened my eyes
You opened the door
To something I had never known before
And your love is the music of my heart.
Michael and Maria are doing great. They got back together and now they are expecting their third and last child. Katelyn is ecstatic and hopes that it’s a little girl. She’s always wanted a baby sister. Michael and Maria are excited as well. They bought a baby bed and started to paint the room already. I tried to convince them to wait to see if it was a boy or a girl, but Maria said… “Nonsense.” And they are painting half the room blue and half the room pink. Maybe they’ll get twins, a boy and a girl.
Speaking of twins, mine is great. Hayden is clean and sober and has been since Justin died. He moved permanently to Boston to join Brighton. He wants to become a lawyer and Grandpa Phillip said he’d help him though medical school.
Brighton and Meghan are getting married, finally. This December, in Roswell… Mom is so excited. She’s on the phone with Meghan all the time planning things. That’s Mom for you.
What you taught me
Only your love could ever teach me
You got thru when no one could reach me before
Cause you always saw in me all the best that I could be
It was you who set me free.
Isabel and Kyle moved permanently to Roswell. It was great having them so close. I know Mom and Dad and Michael and Maria were thrilled that their little group was together again. With Justin’s death it brought up a lot of memories about Alex. I remember that a few days after the funeral they were all talking about it, and I saw my Dad cry. I think that it was good for them to all talk and get things out they needed to say.
Mom and Dad are… well Mom and Dad. Dad’s still working as a pediatrician and is really happy I’m going into the medical field as well. Mom’s been trying to keep all five of us kids in line. She does a great job. Her and Dad are thinking about moving into a smaller house, since it’s just them and Jon - Paul and Charisma left.
And finally me. I’m doing great. It’s a day by day process really, and that’s how I look at it. I get up each morning and I tell myself that I can make this a good day or a bad day, but that it’s just one day. Sometimes the bad wins out over the good, but I just keep reminding myself that I have many more days ahead of me. That I can do this, because this is what Justin would have wanted for me. He would have wanted me to live my life.
It’s hard sometimes living my life and living with the knowledge that he can’t. That his was taken from him. I try to do things that make me happy, things that are important to me.
As I was looking through my yearbook, I found the quote that Justin left his senior class, and I now live by it. I think it’s the most important thing that he left me.
“One of the tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We all dream of some magical rose garden over the horizon, instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside of our windows.” - Dale Carnegie
You taught me to run
You taught me to fly
Helped me to free the me inside
Helped me hear the music of my heart
Helped me hear the music of my heart
You opened my eyes
You opened the door
To something I had never known before
And your love is the music of my heart.
