Title: You Can't Hide From The Past
Author: RoswellChic4Ever AKA Holli
Rating: TEEN to MATURE… for some language…
Disclaimer: If I owned it, would I really have to write on the board to get my kicks?
Summary: Well to be honest, I’m not really sure. I have a million ideas with this story. Basically what is eventually going to come out is my version of what happened on Antar before Zan and the rest of them died and were sent to Earth. The way that will go about getting told is in my mind, but I’m not sure if it will work yet because it’s not on paper. Anyway, it’s a present fic with flashbacks and story telling and all that fun stuff. CC focused. It’s kind of AU. For my benefit I’ve decided that on Antar the aliens looks like regular humans therefore there are no skin husks and whatnot… Does this make sense? Let’s say… Tess is not killing anyone nor does she have a plan too, but there is a granolith. Let’s say it’s post “Summer of 47.” That sounds good to me! HAHA Ok so this means… nothing learned after that matters! No End of the World, no future Max… none of that shit! I’m taking this into my own hands now…
Author’s Note: This is what happens when you watch 6 hours of Roswell in a 24 hour period! You get wacky ideas for fanfic in your head! Then you have to write something or else you go crazy! I’m currently also working on “The Grieving Process” So I’m going to be juggling those two. I need to get that one done soon and then as soon as it’s done, my full attention will be on this fic. So this one is kinda on the back burner until the other one gets done, but I had so many ideas I wanted to start something and get some feedback. Have I written enough introduction to this story yet or what! Ok on with the fun!
Prologue
“Your highness, they are storming the castle. You need to leave now.”
“Larek, I’m not leaving my castle and my soldiers. I’m going to fight. Khivar will not take my throne until I’m dead and gone.”
“With all due respect, you are going to die. Our soldiers are dropping very quickly. Khivar has about five hundred men out there.”
“Where is Rath?”
“Sir, I don’t know.” Larek answered. “Last we heard of him, he was getting the Queen and your sister out of here and into a place of safety.”
“He should have been back by now. I’m going to find him.”
“Um… excuse me your highness as your advisor I really don’t think that’s a good idea. There are tons of khivar’s men out there just waiting to be the lucky one to off the King of Antar and be a Hero to Khivar and the rebellion.”
“Larek, I’m going to find my wife and sister.”
“Zan, as your friend. I’m begging you, don’t do this. It’s suicide.”
Zan looked solemnly at one of this best friends since childhood. “Larek, I have a duty to my family to make sure they are safe.” Zan put his arm on Larek’s shoulder. “If I’m not back by the time that bastard gets here, save yourself. Do whatever you have to. Just survive. You know what to do after that.”
“Yes sir.” Larek said, understanding completely.
“I’m no longer a King, Larek. I’m just a lowly civilian. My time as ruler is done. You’ve been a great friend Larek. I hope to know you in the next life.”
“Goodbye Zan.” Larek said, and he watched his friend rush into the battle. “May a higher power be with you.”
Part 1
Roswell, New Mexico - The Present.
“Michael where the hell are my orbit rings?” Maria yelled into the kitchen. “I swear…” She mumbled under her breath.
Michael hit the bell and the sound echoed through the restaurant. “Here you go Princess.” He said bitterly.
“Oh, I’m sorry spaceboy. You forget. Isabel’s the damn princess. I’m just a regular human.” She snatched her order and took them to the table.
Liz passed her. “Someone isn’t in a good mood today.” She said to Maria.
“You’re right. I’m not. Not with that tramp Courtney throwing herself onto Michael at every opportunity. It makes me want to vomit!” The two best friends looked towards Michael.
“Hey Mikey G! Where’s my Will Smith?” Courtney asked, taking every advantage to touch him.
“Here ya go Courtney.” He handed her the burger and she smiled at him.
“Thanks cutie!”
“SEE WHAT I MEAN?” Maria exclaimed. “My God, could she get any more obvious?”
“Maria, calm down. Michael would never go for her.” Liz said, trying to comfort her friend.
“Hey Liz, I’ve got an idea. How bout you get your dad to fire the slut. Then we won’t have a problem.”
Liz and Maria walked towards the back together. “Maria, I can’t do that. We are already under staffed as it is! My Dad needs all the help he can get.”
“Fine.” Maria whined. “But I’m going to be watching her.”
Liz laughed. “Oh, I have no doubt about that.”
The two sat down on the couch in the back and relaxed. “Finally, my shift is over, I can rest!” Maria exclaimed.
“I know, I’m so happy! We’re just going to let Courtney and Agnes handle the rest of it!” Liz said.
“Ok so what are our big plans tonight? What’s Alex doing?” Maria asked.
Liz thought for a moment. “I’m not sure. We should call him. Movie night perhaps?”
“Only, if it’s an alien free movie night. I need a break.”
“Well, I did kind of tell Max that we could do something tonight and I’ve been avoiding him and blowing him off a lot.”
Maria pouted. “Fine. Aliens can come, but just because Max will bitch at me till no end if I’m the reason you cancel on him.”
“Ok, well I’ll go call Max and see if we can hang at his place and then call Alex ok?” Liz said.
“ Sounds good!”
The girls stood up and Liz headed upstairs and Maria headed out the door. “Oh Maria!” Liz stopped her.
“Yeah?” Maria said turning to her best friend.
“Don’t leave without inviting Michael.” Liz smiled.
“Do I have too…” She whined.
“Yes Maria. You have to. Go.”
Maria pouted and didn’t move. Liz pointed her finger toward the kitchen. “GO!”
“Fine!”
Maria walked into the kitchen with a purpose. “Ok Spaceboy here’s the deal! We’re having a movie night at Max and Isabel’s and you’re supposed to come.”
“Can’t” He answered.
She turned to leave. “Good see ya at…” She turned back around. “I’m sorry did you say you can’t?”
“Yeah, I got plans.” He told her.
“With who.” She asked, getting angry.
At that moment Courtney walked into the kitchen. “Hey Mikey G, where ya taking me tonight?”
“WHAT?” Maria yelled. “You’re blowing me off to take out this slut!”
“Hey! I’m standing right here.” Courtney exclaimed. “No need to talk shit about me!”
“Oh well you home wrecker let me tell you something.” Maria started moving closer to Courtney.
Michael intervened the potential bitch fight and got between the two. “Ok, both of you just knock it off. Maria can I see you out here.” He said his heading nodding her in the direction of leaving.
Maria glared at Courtney then followed Michael out of the kitchen.
“Michael, I can’t believe you are taking her out.” Maria said as soon as they were out of Courtney’s earshot.
“Maria, there were pictures of her in the congresswoman’s office. I want to find out what I can about her. It’s not a date, it’s…”
“Oh Michael, it is a date. And you and I we are through.” Maria said.
“MARIA! Calm down. This is ridiculous. Courtney might know something that is important to me.”
“Just like that old man did?” Maria asked.
“Maria he did know stuff, he was at the crash.”
“Fine! But you have no proof Courtney knows anything. What if she kills you? Huh? Then what?”
“Maria…” Michael was losing the little patience he possessed.
“Fine Michael. Whatever. I’m… I’m done with this.” She turned away.
“Whatever.” He responded.
Maria stopped and turned. She started to say something but stopped. She turned back around and left.

Part 2
Part 2
The gang, minus Michael, sat around the Evans’ living room laughing and talking. Max, Liz and Maria sat on the couch, Isabel and Tess were sitting on the love seat and Kyle and Alex were spralled out on the floor. They were having fun just being teenagers, forgetting for a few hours that they were aliens with a million things to hide.
“Kyle, I can’t believe you made us watch that movie. It was horrible.” Isabel said laughing.
“Hey. Don’t dis the movie. It was great!” Alex defended.
“Alex, Dude Where’s my Car, has got to be, by far the worst movie I’ve ever seen, and I dated Michael, I’ve seen some bad movies.” Maria said.
“Yeah, I think I lost brain cells.” Liz said putting popcorn in her mouth.
The group laughed.
“So where’s Michael?” Tess asked.
“Michael had a date.” Maria answered.
“A date?” Tess questioned.
“Oh yeah, with Courtney.”
“Oh, Maria, I’m sure it’s not a date. You know how Michael is.” Isabel tried to comfort her.
Maria shrugged her shoulders. “Yeah well, I told him I was done with him.”
Everyone laughed. Maria was offended. “Don’t laugh at my pain!”
“I’m sorry Maria, but you tell Michael that, like every other day.” Liz said.
“Well this time, I was serious.”
The group tried to stifle their laughter. “we’re sorry for laughing.” Kyle said, holding it in.
“Yeah Maria… sorry.” Alex burst into laughter again. “I’m sorry Maria, I can’t help it.”
Maria threw a pillow at him. “Take that Whitman.” She missed at hit Kyle instead.
“Oh it’s on now DeLuca!” Kyle said as he declared full out war on Maria. He threw a pillow completely missing Maria and hitting Liz.
“Hey! I had nothing to do with this.” She said throwing it back. It smacked Alex right in the face.
“Pillow fight!” Alex screamed as the whole group started throwing couch pillows and fighting with each other. They laughed hysterically and loudly and hit each other with pillows and wrestled.

Courtney sat behind Michael as he drove the motorcycle towards her house. They had gone to dinner and movie and Michael still knew nothing about her. He had his suspicions. He didn’t believe that Whittiker would have all those surveillance photos just because Courtney had slept with her stepson.
He pulled up in front of her house and took his helmet off.
“Thanks for the date Mikey G.” She said getting off the motorcycle.
“Yeah, night.”
“Well, it doesn’t have to end here. You can come in…if you want.”
Michael pondered the idea. He could go in and end up doing something really stupid with Courtney and possibly losing Maria forever, or he go in and do something really stupid with Courtney, find out something useful and then maybe Maria would forgive him since it was like business.
“Ok, sure. What the hell.” He got off the motorcycle and followed her into the house.
“Have a seat, I’ll get us something to drink.” She said and went heading into another room.
Michael sat down, finding himself a bit uncomfortable. He was nervous. He knew nothing about this girl, except that her picture was in the office of someone trying to kill him, and here he was at her place just hanging out. He could feel something wasn’t right. Before he had the chance to bolt, Courtney returned with two cans of soda and some chips.
“Here ya go Mikey G.” She said setting it in front of him.
“Ya know, I’m not really that hungry.” He said starting to get up. “Maybe I should..”
She sat next to him and pushed him back onto the couch. “Maybe we could do something for you to work up an appetite?” She suggested.
Michael wasn’t quite sure what to say, but before he could say anything Courtney was kissing him and he was kissing her back, against his better judgment.
He moved his hands to the back of her neck under her hair and continued kissing her. They leaned back and she was on top of him. Things were getting pretty intense when Michael rubbed the back of her neck. He felt the skin peel away.
His eyes shot open realizing what Courtney was and pushed her off him and she landed on the floor.
“Michael, what the hell are you doing?”
Before she could get up he raised his hand to blast her. “I know what you are. You’re a skin. You’re our enemy.”
“No, Michael. Don’t shoot, blast… whatever. Listen. I’m not like Whittaker.” She tried to explain.
“What the hell are you talking about.” He asked.
“There are two types of Skins. Listen you have to trust me. I can explain it all, I promise.”
“Well you better start explaining, or I’m gonna start blasting.”
“Ok, listen. I’m a member of a group of people who follow you. We believe that you, Max, Isabel and Tess would still be alive if you ruled Antar, as opposed to Max.”
Michael dropped his hand slightly. “What?”
“You know, the big downfall that led to your death. We believe it would never have happened had you been in charge.”
“What big downfall that led to my death? What are you talking about?”
She looked perplexed, “You don’t remember anything do you?”
He shook his head, “No. We don’t have any memories of that life at all.”
Courtney was shocked. “How can you help our planet if you don’t even know what’s going on?”
“So you know about everything before we died?” He asked.
“I don’t know everything. But I know someone who does.”
“Well find them. I want to know it all.”

::So I was re-reading this all and realized in the intro I said there are no skin husks... I lied and changed things... sorry for my inconsistancies...Enjoy...
Part 3
Michael ran to the steps of the Evan’s house, with Courtney in tow, and busted in the door to find his friends laughing and throwing pillows.
“So this is how the Royal four spend their free time. So glad these are the people in charge of our planet. No wonder you all died.” Courtney said to Michael loud enough for everyone else to hear.
The gang stopped after hearing Courtney’s words and turned to face her and Michael.
“What the…” Kyle started.
“Michael, what’s going on?” Max asked.
Michael and Courtney made their way into the living room and took a look around them.
“Courtney is from Antar. She knows about us and she knows what happened before we died.”
The group was confused.
“Umm.. How is she from Antar Michael? How does she know stuff?” Maria questioned.
“Yeah, the only other alien life form we know of are the skins.” Isabel stated.
Michael took a breath. “Courtney is a skin.”
The three aliens put their hands up as Michael had done earlier.
Michael got in front of her. “Wait. She’s good. She is um… she’s not like them.”
“What do you mean?” Tess scoffed. “Skins are skins, they want to kill us.”
“I don’t want to kill you. I don’t necessarily like you, but I have no intention of killing you. Unless of course Michael tells me too.”
Maria laughed. “Ok, what the hell does that mean.”
“I follow Michael basically. Like I told Michael, my people believe Michael or in the other life, Rath, should have been King, not Zan… well Max.”
“Ok, so you worship my boyfriend. I don’t really like this.”
Courtney rolled her eyes. “You know what, there is something way bigger out there than this and your pathetic life and whatever you think you have with Michael.”
Maria stepped toward Courtney. Michael got in the middle. “Ok, I don’t even have the time for this right now.” Michael pointed to the couch. “Maria sit.”
“Ok see I don’t buy the whole thing where I worship you so..” She protested.
“Maria!”
She moved to the couch slowly and never took her eyes off Courtney.
“Courtney over there.” He pointed to a chair on the complete opposite side of the room from Maria.
Courtney did as she was told.
The rest of the group then sat down.
“So Courtney knows stuff about what happened and I think we should have her tell us.”
“I think so too.” Tess said.
The four humans were nervous about this. They knew that if their alien counterparts found out the truth about their past that maybe they’d forget them and follow destiny. They were also worried that Courtney was dangerous.
“Ok well I don’t know everything, but Larek will know.” Courtney told them.
“Who’s Larek?” Max asked.
“Larek was, Zan’s political advisor. He was basically your friend from childhood who grew up with you in the castle. He helped you make decisions about things.” Courtney explained.
“I thought that’s what Michael was.” Isabel said.
Courtney shook her head. “No, Michael was the military leader. He was the second in command and betrothed to Vilandra or well you Isabel. He was the one who would take over the throne if anything was to happen to Zan. He had all the authority Zan had, when Zan wasn’t there to give the orders himself. Since Vilandra was the older of the two of you, it was thought that her and Rath would take over the throne, but when the King died he left it to Zan and his bride instead.”
“Which would be me?” Tess asked.
“In theory.”
“What does that mean?”
“Look, really, Larek will be better at explaining.”
“How do we find this Larek?” Alex asked, finally saying something. He and Liz and Kyle had stayed silent for a long time and Alex was getting curious.
“Larek currently lives in Roswell. He’s not a skin. See we look like humans on Antar, but our skin, muscle, organs, and tissue can’t handle this atmosphere. Does that make sense? Larek developed a way to live on Earth. Our bodies can only survive for about 3 months. Then it starts peeling and we start to die. I’m not really sure what Larek did but he can live here forever and his body won’t deteriorate.”
“So, Larek has been living in Roswell for how long? And do we know him?” Michael asked.
“You do know him and he’s been here about 4 months.”
“Ok, so who is Larek?” Max was puzzled.
“Brody Davis.”

Part 4
AN: Bear with me, I am so bad at making up names… and I had to make up a lot for this… I also give credit to BabyNames.Com because I definetly could not have come up with names without it! HAHA Enjoy part 4... This is when we get into the good stuff.. Well I hope it’s good. I had a lot of problems putting this part on paper and then on top of it, when I finally got something I was semi happy with, my word processor shut down and I lost it all… so anyway… here ya go!
Part 4
Roswell, New Mexico - The Next Day, Michael’s Apartment
“Well, This is a rather long story you do know?” Brody told the five aliens and four humans. They were sitting, scattered all over Michael’s living room ready to hear the story.
“Brody, Larek, whatever we’re supposed to call you, we realize it’s long, but we need to know, what happened.” Michael said.
“Call me Brody really, and I will tell you the story, I’ll have to skip the minor details of course, but everything you need to know, I can tell you. I suppose the best place to start is well, the beginning.”
The 8 friends braced themselves for what was going to be a long day, or perhaps a long couple of days. They weren’t sure how long it would take to get through all of this, but they were ready. It was time.
“I grew up in the castle, my father was advisor to King Edric, who is Zan and Vilandra’s father. I was born three years before Vilandra. A year after her was Zan and Rath, and then 2 years later Ava was born. Before we get too deep into this, let me explain a few things… Antarian years are very different from Earth years. It’s slower on Antar. For every ten years on Earth, it’s one year on Antar.”
“That means we’ve only been dead for…” Tess started.
“Five years. That’s right.” Larek said. “Also… Antar is very much like Earth. We have oceans and mountains and all of that. The major difference is the atmosphere. It’s made up of different elements than Earth’s atmosphere. That and the sky is many different colors. It’s not always blue but sometimes it can be pink or purple. The only consistency in the sky is that it will be darker at night and lighter in the day time. Any questions?”
No one said anything.
“Ok well here we go. As I was saying you are all different ages, but during all of this time where you are being born and learning to walk, your marriages are already being arranged. Zan, Rath, Vilandra, and myself knew each other from birth, but Ava wasn’t thrown in the mix until later…
* * *
Antar - 16 Antarian years before the fall
“Zan, I want you to meet Ava.” Queen Reina said to her eight year old son. She laughed to herself as the two children shyly smiled and slightly backed away from the other.
“Hi.” Zan said, moving closer.
Ava took a step back, “Hi.”
“Zan, why don’t you take Ava to the garden to play with Larek, Vilandra, and Rath.”
“Ok, come on Ava.” Zan said.
Ava looked cautiously at the boy then back at her mother.
“It’s ok… you can go.”
Zan grabbed Ava’s hand and Ava gave up her silent protest knowing that once a prince made up his mind, there was no changing it.
When the two were gone, the mothers started to talk.
“Where is your youngest daughter?” Ava’s mother asked.
“She’s doing her studies. We need to keep her on task. Between you and I, she’s a mess. Always getting herself into trouble. She really is an embarrassment. I wish she could be more like her brother and sister.”
“Very sad I’ll say. To be a princess and not have her priorities straight.”
“Yes, well what is Antar coming to these days. Edric and I try our best to keep the people in line.”
“You do a wonderful job.” Ava’s mom said, sucking up to the Queen.
“Well thank you. Although I am a bit worried about Zubin. You see he and Edric have been friends a very long time. Zubin lives on the other side of town. He traveled to Earth recently and apparently fell in love with some Earth woman. He periodically went back after spending months recuperating from the atmosphere. From what I’ve heard it’s killer on our bodies. Anyway, this last time that he came back, he brought someone with him. He said it’s his daughter. That he and this woman were in love and conceived this child. She’s half human and living on Antar.”
“Really? That is unbelievable.” Ava’s mother said.
“Yes, I just hope the young girl survives ok. I mean her mother apparently died and that is why he brought her here. I feel bad for them both. To lose a mother. That poor girl must be devastated. And on top of it, to travel to a new planet. She’s probably quite a mess.”
“I would imagine. How old did you say she is?”
“I believe she’s 7 Earth years old. See the time is very different on Earth. I hope her body adjusts to life here, or else she’s going to age very rapidly. This whole space travel thing is still very new to us.” The Queen explained.
“Well let’s hope Zubin has done the right thing by bringing this little girl here. It could be very detrimental to her health.”
* * *
Roswell, New Mexico - Michael’s Apartment - The Same Day
“The five children grew very close. Occasionally Zan and Vilandra’s younger sister would be with the group, but she was always kept close to home. She was a rebellious one. Always wanting to see the world. She lived in a fantasy world and wanted to travel to Earth, or at least across Antar. She had dreams that something bigger was out there.”
“So what happened to her?” Isabel asked. Shocked at the fact that she had a sister on another planet.
“We’ll get to that.” Larek told her. “But now is when the story starts to get complicated after this, the actions made start to spiral creating the downfall of the most powerful monarchy in the universe.”

::AN - Ok so I'm really on a roll with this story! I've got the ideas going a million miles an hour and I can't stop writing! I'm sure I'll probably have another part up either 2nite or 2morrow but here is part 5 which I just finished and I'm really happy with it, so I hope you all are too! Thanks for the feedback!::
Linn: No Maria and Brody aren't close and this part has some M/M but... not in the good way... don't worry though, I'll fix them.
Part 5
Roswell, New Mexico - Michael’s Apartment - The Same Day
The group was getting antsy and hungry. They had been listening to this story for about 3 hours now and they weren’t getting to the good stuff yet.
“Ok Spaceboy, I’m hungry. Before this story goes any further I need some food.”
“Maria, we don’t have time for food right now.” Michael said annoyed.
“Michael, I think Maria might be right.” Brody said. “I think you all need a break. The story only gets more intense from here.”
“Yeah cause it’s been intense so far. A couple of kids playing in a garden and a half human on Antar. Not really too impressed yet.” Michael said.
“Michael!” Max said. “Look how about if Liz and Maria go get us something from the CrashDown.”
“You know, how about if Michael and I go to the CrashDown and Liz and Isabel can get some blankets and pillows. I have a feeling we’re going to need to get comfortable for the rest of this.” Maria suggested.’
“I think I’ll stay.” Michael said.
“Oh no Michael, we’re leaving. Let’s go, get up.” She pulled Michael up from the couch.
“That sounds like a good idea Maria.” Isabel said, “We’ll see you in a little bit.”
Maria walked out of the house with Michael and the rest of the girls went around gathering comfortable things so they could relax after eating.
* * *
“Maria, can we hurry this up?” Michael said pushing Maria to hurry with the order.
Maybe if you’d help we could get done faster. Oh I forgot, you can’t get off your alien ass to do anything that’s not for Courtney.”
“Here we go. Let me have it Maria. Come on, say what you have to say.”
“Oh, you don’t want to know what I have to say Mikey G.” she said bitterly. “I’m so sick of this shit. I’m so sick of you pushing and pulling. I’m going to give you until the end of this whole story with Larek, because I understand you have a lot on your mind finding out your past and whatnot. But when this whole thing is done and over you better make up your damn mind or I’m saying goodbye forever and I mean it this time Michael, because this thing with us, whatever it is, it’s killing me.”
She grabbed the food and walked out of the resturant. He followed a few feet behind. She got in the Jetta and slammed the door. He stood outside and ran his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath. Then got in and started the car and they rode the rest of the way back to the apartment in absolute silence.
* * *
“So umm.. What do you think so far? You know about Tess and destiny and all of that.” Liz tried to be discrete but didn’t do to well.
“I think that Zan may have loved Ava, but me, well… I’m Max and I know for a fact that Max doesn’t feel anything for Tess other than friendship. Another girl already has his heart.”
“Max, I know that you think this doesn’t matter but it does. Like Courtney said… there are bigger things out there than me and you. You are a King.”
Max shook his head, “No, Liz, I’m a teenager living in Roswell, New Mexico. I’m not a King.”
“Look, let’s just not get into this now.” Liz walked off and joined the rest of the group.
* * *
“Ok, I’m feeling much better now that I’m not dying of hunger.” Alex said.
The group was back with blankets and pillows all ready like they were hearing a bed time story. Isabel, Alex, and Maria were on the couch. Max and Liz were on the floor leaning against the couch. Kyle and Valenti, who joined wanting to hear as much about this as possible, were also on the floor. Courtney was sitting as far away from Maria as she could and Michael was sitting as far away from both of them as he could. Then of course Brody/Larek who was in a chair facing them all ready to begin the next part.
“Well now that you are all situated I think I can go on.” He said. “Let’s jump ahead about 7 years. I’m 19. Rath and Zan are 15. Vilandra is 16 and Ava is 13. Ianna, Zan and Vilandra’s sister, is also 13. Her and Ava have grown very close over the years. They all spend a lot of time together…
* * *
Antar - 9 Antarian years before the fall
Zan and Rath counted to 10 and then jumped from the rock into the water below. Ava, Vilandra, and Ianna were giggling and laying on the ground under the bright Antarian sun. The sky was pink that day and the yellow sun rays made beautiful colors in the sky. There were few clouds floating and the temperature was rising every minute. They hadn’t been swimming in a long time and they were all glad to get away from their studies and responsibilities for a few hours. Larek watched over the younger ones. He had assured the King and Queen that Zan and Vilandra, and even Ianna needed this break. They were becoming restless always staying inside palace walls and never getting to do anything. He watched intently laughing and smiling as the boys ran up to the girls and soaked them and the girls screamed and chased after them.
He watched as Zan ran towards him and hid behind him.
“Oh no Zan, I’m not in this little water fight. Go out there and face those girls like a man.” Larek said pushing Zan out in front of him.
That was when he saw her. The most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She had long light brown hair and these amazing eyes that were a light shade of green. He stared at her taking in everything about her. Her hair, her eyes, and how soft her skin looked. He just wanted to touch it. He just wanted to touch her. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“Zan! Help!” Rath yelled taking Zan’s eyes off of the girl. He turned to see Vilandra and Ava ready to throw him into the water.
He laughed and ran to his friend. He grabbed Ava and threw her in and then Rath helped him with Vilandra.
“Alright! We got em!” Rath said, giving his best friend a high five. But they spoke too soon. Ianna came up behind the both of them and pushed as hard as she could and the prince and his best friend went splashing into the water. Ianna laughed hysterically and the girls cheered for their victory. Zan and Rath climbed out of the water and they started walking to a sunny place to lay down and dry. They picked a spot and Rath sprawled out. Zan went to sit down when he saw her again.
“Hey, I’ll be right back ok?” Zan told his best friend.
“Alright, whatever.” Rath said basking in the sun.
Zan headed off towards the girl when Larek stopped him. “What are you doing?”
“I’m going to talk to that girl. Move.” Zan told him.
“Zan, I don’t think that’s such a good idea. You’re already engaged.”
“Ok, I’m going to go talk to her not ask her to be my Queen forever and ever.”
“Zan, you really should just go back with Rath and the others.” Larek told him.
“Larek? What harm is going to come from making a friend.”
“Fine. Do as you wish.”
Zan smiled at Larek and proceeded to walk towards the girl.
She was sitting alone reading a book. He tried to put all of his nervousness aside and went to sit next to her. “Hi.”
She looked at him strangely. “Hi…”
He sat in silence just kind of staring at her.
“Can I do something for you?” She asked him.
“Umm… uh… No. I just wanted to come say hi. I’m Zan.”
“I know who you are.” She said smiling at his apparent nervousness.
“You do?” He asked.
She laughed. “You’re the Prince of Antar.”
“Oh yeah… I guess I am huh. Well it seems you know all about me. So uh… what’s your name?”
“Catherine.” She said plainly.
Catherine, he thought to himself. What a beautiful name. “That’s a very pretty name.” He said.
She smiled slightly. “Thank you. My mother named me that after her favorite book.”
He just stared captured by the essence of her.
“So Prince Zan, you’re kind of staring at me. Am I doing something wrong.”
He was shocked at her forwardness. “I’m sorry Catherine, it’s just that, you are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.”
It was her turn to be shocked. “Wow, thank you.”
“So what’s your mother’s favorite book?” He asked, regaining his composure and trying not to stare.
“I’m sure you’ve never heard of it.” She said moving the book from his sight.
“I am the Prince of Antar, I get a lot of books thrown my way. What is it?” He tried reaching for the book.
“Nothing. I have to go.” She said abruptly and she started gathering her things.
“No, wait.” He protested. “Why are you leaving? We just met.”
“Yeah I told my Dad I’d be home an hour ago. Bye.” She started to run off.
He followed after her. “I want to see you again. When can I?”
“Never.” She said turning to leave. “I have to go.”
“Catherine…”
She turned and faced him. “I’m sure you have better things to do with your time than hang out with me.”
“Please, just meet me here tonight.”
“I can’t.”
“Then I’ll meet you at your house.”
“Please, just leave me alone. Goodbye.”
She ran off and Zan was left standing by himself. Larek saw the whole thing and walked towards him, hoping to provide some comfort.
“Zan, come on, let’s just go swim. I think the girls are ready for another water fight. I know Ava was looking for you.”
“Larek, I want you to find out everything about her. Her name is Catherine.” Zan ordered.
“Zan…” Larek started to protest.
“Larek… please.”
Larek sighed and agreed. “I’ll start working as soon as we get back to the palace."

Antar - That night
Zan stared up at his white ceiling. The flames from the fire place were casting shadows on the ceiling and Zan watched them intently thinking of his day and Catherine. He could still hear her sweet voice in his ear and smell her perfume. The only vision in his mind was of her. He thought of her beautiful smile and her big green eyes. He remembered the way her long curly hair fell at her back and a few pieces in the front framed her face. He couldn’t get her out of his mind.
Zan had never felt this way about anyone before. Sure he had felt a certain love and protectiveness for Ava, but it was nothing like he felt for Catherine. Zan always knew that he was not in love with Ava. He loved her, but he wasn’t in love with her. He had known her since he was eight and he felt the same way for her as he did for Vilandra or Ianna, his sisters. He loved Ava like a sister and he was supposed to marry her in a few years. Zan knew he could never marry Ava now. Not after meeting Catherine.
Zan got off his bed and started pacing back and forth. He had to find a way to see her again. He had to tell her how he felt. But how was he going to find her? Larek wasn’t working fast enough. Zan wanted to see Catherine now. He thought about asking his Father if he knew who she was or where she lived, but he didn’t want him asking questions. The King was all about tradition and rules and Zan was sure he wouldn’t understand about Catherine. He could ask his mother, but she would just shush him saying “You don’t know what love is,” and then send him to bed. No, if Zan wanted to find Catherine, he would have to do it himself.
He sat back down on his bed and contemplated how to find her when he heard a knock at his door.
“Come in.” He said. The door squeaked slightly as it opened and in walked Larek.
Zan rose and walked towards him. “What did you find?”
Larek handed him a piece of paper. “This is where she lives. And I have to say, I could get into big trouble for this Zan.”
“I know, but thank you. You don’t know what this means to me!” Zan said looking at the paper. He went to his wardrobe and grabbed some clothes and shoes.
“What are you doing?” Larek asked.
“I’m going to see her. I have to see her.”
“No!” Larek said sternly. “You are not sneaking out of here to go find some girl. Do you know what will happen to you if your parents find out?!?! I will not allow this Zan.”
Zan glared at his friend. “Larek, I have to see her. I love her.”
Larek scoffed. “You love her? Do you know what love is? You’ve known this girl for a day and had what a 5 minute conversation with her? Look, tomorrow I’ll go with you to see her, but tonight you need to stay here and get some sleep.
Zan thought about it for a minute and then agreed with his friend. “You’re right. I should get some sleep. You go Larek and tomorrow we will go see her.”
Larek looked at Zan and Zan smiled innocently. “Ok, I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight Zan.”
“Goodnight Larek.”
Larek shut the door and Zan hurried to get dressed and put his shoes on. He opened the doors to the balcony and went to the edge to look over. There was a white trellis against the castle wall and Zan thought it looked safe enough that he could climb down it. Then he had a better idea. He went to his bed and ripped off the sheets and tied them together. He tied them to the railing around the balcony. He went over the railing and started to climb down the trellis. ‘This is just like in a book.’ He thought to himself. He couldn’t believe what he was doing. He was always very calm and obedient. Always the good Prince doing as mother and father said. But this, well this was different. He had to convince Catherine that they were meant for each other.
After a few minutes he was close enough to the ground that he could jump and land safely. He did so and then started to creep quietly to the gate. Once he was out of the palace walls he would be home free. He got to the gate and slowly opened it, hoping it didn’t make any loud noises. He had watched Ianna leave the palace this way a million times and made a mental note to blame her if he was to get caught.
When he was out of the garden he started to run. From the information Larek had provided, Catherine didn’t live very far from the castle. It was only a matter of time now.

Roswell, New Mexico - That Night - Michael’s Apartment
“Zan ran as fast as he could going against my advice. It wasn’t until much later that I found out about his little adventure into the night. But I can see now why it was important to him.”
“And why was that?” Tess asked. She was very irritated with the fact that Zan had betrayed her in the other life. That they were engaged and he still went off to be with someone else.
Larek could sense some hostility in Tess’s voice. “Well, I think we should get some sleep. Everyone looks very tired and there is still much left in the story.”
Tess looked around at everyone and could see their exhaustion. She herself was very tired but the story was interesting to her. She realized though it was probably for the best to get some sleep. “Yeah, lets get some sleep guys. We can finish tomorrow.”
“So uh, I take it everyone is sleeping here?” Michael asked.
“My parents think I’m staying at Maria’s” Liz told him.
“And my mom thinks I’m at Liz’s.”
The rest of the group nodded in agreement that they were staying.
“Well great! Slumber party at Michael’s!” He said sarcastically. “You all have pillows and blankets so have fun. My bed is calling me.”
He slowly headed to his bed and collapsed on it.
The rest of the group found places on the floor and anywhere else acceptable to sleep and turned off the lights.

Maria was laying quietly by herself on the floor. She couldn’t sleep. She could hear Alex and Kyle quietly snoring and Tess was breathing really heavy. Maria rolled her eyes. ‘Probably dreaming about sex with Max or something totally gross like that.’ she thought, then quicky erased the image from her mind. ‘Ew!’ Her eyes were adjusted to the dark and she looked around at her friends. Max and Liz were curled up together on the floor. A little close for just friends, but Maria was glad. Isabel had the couch to herself, but Alex was on the floor just next to it. Courtney had fallen asleep in the chair. That left Brody, Valenti, and Kyle sleeping on the floor. Everyone was a little close for comfort but Maria noticed all of them sleeping very soundly.
She laid there for a few more moments before getting up and walking quietly towards Michael’s bed, not wanting to wake anyone up. She lifted the covers and got in slowly. She turned and faced away from Michael and pulled the covers up.
She was almost asleep when she felt him moving. Her whole body tensed up ready for him to yell at her and ask her what the hell she was doing. But he didn’t. He put his arms around her and kissed the back of her head. She smiled to herself and fell asleep.

Antar - The Same Night - Catherine’s House
Zan ran the whole way to Catherine’s street. It had taken what seemed forever. When he got close he slowed down and searched for the house. The dark purple sky provided no light so he relied on the moon to shine the way. He looked among the houses when finally he spotted hers. He knew it was hers because he saw her sitting on a rock in a garden off to the side of the house. She was reading the book she had earlier.
Her hair was pulled up to her head and her skin was glowing under the moonlight. His skin started to tingle when he saw her and he knew he had to talk to her. He quietly snuck to the side of the house, not wanting to frighten her.
“Catherine.” He whispered when he got close.
Her head shot up from the book and she looked around for her visitor. He stepped out of the shadows to show himself. Her green eyes widened and she looked directly at him. “What are you doing here?”
He stepped towards her and kneeled in front of the rock. “I had to see you. I’ve been thinking about you all day. I can’t get you out of my mind.”
Catherine looked away from Zan, “Zan, you need to go home. Please.”
“Catherine, I can’t. I… I think … I think I’m in love with you.”
“You don’t even know me!” She said bitterly turning back to face him. “You just met me and you think you love me?”
He was taken aback. “Catherine, I’ve never felt for anyone the way I feel for you. When I saw you today, I knew. I knew you were the one.”
She shook her head. “No. You’re destined to be the King of Antar. I’m just a civilian. I’m not rich, I’m not the heir to any kind of throne. I’m just a regular girl.”
“I don’t care about that. I only care about you.” He took her face in his hands and looked her directly in her eyes. He realized this was the first time he touched her and her skin felt so soft in his hands. He stopped thinking about that for a moment, knowing that he had to convince her of his love.
She jerked her head from his touch. “I’m not who you think I am Zan. Please, just leave me be.”
She grabbed her book and stood to start to leave. He knew this was his last chance.
He stood up to follow her. “I may be the heir to a throne, I may be a Prince and I may be destined to be some great King. But none of that matters. None of that has ever mattered to me. I’m just a normal boy who’s falling in love with a normal girl. Now look at me and tell me you feel nothing for me. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the same way.”
A single tear ran slowly down her cheek. She felt it roll until it reached her lips. She licked them and could taste the salty tear. “I don’t. Please leave.” She said not turning to look at him. More tears started to come.
“No.” He grabbed her arm and turned her around. “Look me in the eye and tell me.”
He saw the tears and took his thumb to wipe them away. “Catherine…”
She pulled away and a sob escaped from her throat. “I do, I feel something very strong for you. Something I’ve never felt before, but this can’t be. Please Zan.”
“Why, why can’t it be? Explain to me, why?”
“Because … Because… I’m half-human.”
“What?” He asked.
“My Mother, she’s from Earth. My Father is from Antar. They met on Earth and fell in love and here I am. My mother died when I was seven and my Father brought me here.”
Zan let go of her arm and ran his hand through his thick dark brown hair. Catherine took a step back from him and stared down at her feet. The only noise was of the two breathing quietly and the wind. It was blowing lightly and the trees swayed slowly back and forth.
After a few minutes of deep thought and silence, Zan sighed and took a small step toward Catherine. He grabbed her hands and she lifted her head looking him straight in the eye. “Catherine, I love you. I love you regardless of your background or your history. I don’t care where you are from.”
Catherine gave him a small smile and tears started pouring from her eyes again. Zan pulled her into his embrace and she put her arms around him. They stayed like that for a few moments and then she pulled away.
“So what’s your mother’s favorite book?” He asked.
She laughed wiping away her tears. “Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte. Heard of it?”
He shook his head. “No.”
“I told you so.” She grabbed his hand and pulled him down so the two were sitting side by side. She picked the book up and handed it to him.
“My mother gave it to me right before she died. I was too young to understand it at seven, but my Dad would read it to me every night and explain to me what was going on. Once we finished it, we’d go right back and start from the beginning again. Now though, sometimes I read it to him. I’ve read it about a million times so I figure I can part with it for a little bit so you can read it.”
He carefully took the book in his hands and flipped through the pages. He shut the book and looked back at Catherine. “Thank you.” He said.
“You’re welcome.” She replied.
He looked up at the sky and saw the signs that dawn was approaching. “I have to go.” He told her. “I have to get back before my parents or anyone else realizes I’m gone.”
He stood up and then helped her up. “When can I see you again?”
“I … I don’t know.”
He thought for a second. “How about if I meet you here again tomorrow night.”
“You mean tonight?” She said informing him that it was already tomorrow.
“Yeah, tonight. I’ll be here.”
She thought for a moment. “Ok. I’ll see you then.”
Zan grabbed the book and turned to go but turned back around. He pulled Catherine to him and kissed her deeply.
“I love you Catherine.” He said when he pulled away.
“Goodbye Zan.” She said and he started to run home. “I love you too.” She whispered to herself when he was out of her sight.

Roswell, New Mexico, Michael’s Apartment - Sunday, 2 days after movie night
“Wow.” Liz said. “That was so sweet and romantic.”
The group was sitting in awe at the last part of the story. The girls were dreaming in their minds of how beautiful the story was and the boys were about to vomit from all the mushy stuff. All the boys with the exception of Max of course.
“Geez Maxwell, you were quite the ladies man in the past life.” Michael told him. “Some things never change.”
“Weren’t you the one with Maria in your bed last night?” Isabel reminded him. The group had woken up to find Michael sleeping with Maria in his arms.
The group smiled at the two who were sitting together on the floor. “Yeah that was me. I’m a stud.” Michael said looking at Maria.
She snickered at him. “Ha! You’re far from stud status buddy. But you’re ok.”
“So what happens next?” Tess asked, completely engulfed in the story. She was past the bitter stage where Zan didn’t love her, and totally into this love story with Catherine. She was interested in seeing where everyone else fit in.
“Well Zan and Catherine continued their secret meetings. Every night Zan would go over to Catherine’s and they would sit in her garden and talk and occasionally they would read parts of her book together. Zan had loved the story of Heathcliff and Catherine and read the book many times.”
“It’s a sad book.” Liz piped in. “Catherine and Heathcliff are so in love with each other, they are insane. Especially Catherine.”
The group looked questionably at Liz. “What?” She asked. “It’s a great book. I’ve read it a few times.”
Larek smiled. “I’m sure you have. And you are right. Heathcliff and Catherine are quite strange in the book. I think that’s why Zan took such a liking to it.”
“Well anyway,” he continued, “Their secret meetings went well for awhile, until they got caught…”

Antar - One month after Zan and Catherine First Met - Catherine's House
Zan and Catherine were lying on their backs on the soft cool grass, looking up at the sky. It was a deep dark red that night. There were no clouds in sight and the stars were shining very brightly.
“You see that one right there.” She said pointing to a bright star.
“Yeah.”
“That’s Earth. That’s where I was born.” She explained.
He turned and propped his head up on his arm and smiled at her. “Tell me about it. Tell me about Earth.”
“It’s a lot like here. There’s water and trees and grass. But the sky is always blue. Well, sometimes it’s dark blue, almost black when it rains. The clouds are white, and the only time the sky turns pink or purple is at sunrise or sunset.”
“What else?”
She thought for a moment. “Well Earth is divided into countries. I was born in America. They don’t have a King or Queen there. They have a president and he’s voted on by the people. Then he runs the country. But they have war and stuff just like here.”
“Interesting.” Zan had never heard of a ruling system that wasn’t a King or Queen.
“I have a ton of books about Earth and America if you want to read them.” She offered.
“I’ve got a better idea.” He said with a grin on his face. “Let me see your hands.”
“Why? What are you going to do?” She asked curiously.
He took her hands in his and explained. “I’m going to connect with you and see all of your memories from Earth.”
She pulled her hands away. “No. I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Why not?” He asked.
“Because there are things I don’t want you to see ok? Not yet.”
He was disappointed. “But someday right?”
“Yeah someday.”
Zan laid back down on his back and held Catherine’s hand in his caressing it softly.
The silence was nice for the both of them. Catherine shut her eyes for only a moment. Or so she thought.
The grass began to rustle and she heard what sounded like footsteps, she opened her eyes and sat up looking around her. She looked up and saw the sun shining brightly upon them. Zan was asleep next to her and she shook him, begging him to wake up.
“CATHERINE! WHAT IS GOING ON?” She heard. She looked up and saw her Father standing over herself and Zan.
“Daddy I was… we were just talking and we fell asleep.” She got up quickly and brushed the dirt and leaves from her dress.
Zan awoke to the commotion and was on his feet as well. He went to stand in front of Catherine protectively.
“I’m sorry. It will never happen again.” He explained.
Zubin glared at him. “What are you doing here.”
“Dad, we’re just friends. I was sitting out here and he was walking by and we started to talk. I’m sorry.” She lied.
“And do the King and Queen know where their Prince is?”
Zan shook his head. “No sir.”
“Well I suggest you get home. Catherine get inside.”
Catherine did as she was told and Zan started to walk home.
“Wait a minute.” Zubin said stopping him.
Zan turned back to the man.
“I don’t know what you’re doing with my daughter and to be honest, I don’t care. You better stay as far away from her as you can.”
“I can’t do that, I’m sorry. I love her.”
“No, you’re just looking to get some kicks. All you’re going to do is break her heart. Stay away from her! If you love her, you’ll stay away.”
“I love her.” And with that Zan turned and started his walk home, ready to face his parents who were going to be very angry.

"What do I look like? The Wizard of Oz? You need a brain? You need a heart? Go ahead, take mine. Take everything I have."

Antar - The Same Morning - The Palace
“Where have you been?” Vilandra asked as Zan walked out of his room.
“Did Mom and Dad notice?” He asked, nervous for her answer.
Vilandra began to laugh. “Did they notice? Oh yeah. They’re downstairs in the dining hall eating breakfast. So where were you anyway?”
Zan glared at his older sister. “No where. Just out, taking a walk. I
needed to think.”
“I think you were with that girl. The one you talked to about a month ago when we were swimming.”
Zan looked down at his feet.
“You were! You were with her!” Vilandra exclaimed.
“Shut up, Vilandra. I have to go talk to Mom and Dad.” He said pushing past her.
“Good luck little brother.” She called to him and then headed back to her room to get ready for the day.

Larek paced nervously in front of the entrance to the dining hall. It was his responsibility to keep an eye on Zan and now he was missing. And the King and Queen were not happy.
“Larek!” Zan called down the hall to him. Larek looked up to see the young Prince coming towards him.
“Where have you been?” He asked Zan angrily.
“I’ve been to see the most beautiful girl in the universe Larek.” He told his friend with a dreamy look in his eyes.
Larek snapped his fingers in front of Zan’s face. “You better snap out of this! You’re parents are enraged and waiting for you. I suggest you face them now to get it over with.”
“I suppose you’re right.” Zan said. “I’m going to tell them about Catherine.”
Larek was taken aback at that statement. Zan was going to tell the King and Queen about Catherine? That was not going to go over well. “How about you just tell them you went for a walk and lost track of time.”
Zan shook his head. “No, Larek. I have to tell them. They need to know.”
“It’s your funeral.” Larek stated and then walked off.
Zan took a deep breath and prepared himself for what was to come. He opened the big, heavy, brown doors that led to the dining hall and stepped in. He let go of the doors and they slammed loudly alerting the attention of the King and Queen to their son.
“Zan! Where have you been?!?! We were so worried!” His mother said, rushing to hug him.
“I’m fine Mom, really.” He told her.
Zan’s father was looking at his son with that look Zan knew so well. The look of disappointment. Zan had seen that look in his Father’s eyes many a time when it came to Ianna, but rarely when it came to him. He was always the good son, obeying the rules and preparing himself for his future. Zan knew that his Father was disappointed and that was something Zan had a hard time dealing with, but it was too late to turn back now.
“Father… Mother… I have to talk to you about something.” He said moving to the table. The Queen was moving back to sit down and Zan stood at the other side facing his parents. “For the past month I’ve been sneaking out of my room every night to see someone.”
His mother started to interrupt. “Zan, if you wanted to see Ava we could have…”
“No! Not Ava. Someone else.”
His parents were confused, not sure what he was talking about.
Zan pulled out a chair and sat down with his parents. “I met this girl, she’s wonderful and beautiful and smart. She’s perfect and I… I’m in love with her.”
“Oh Zan. You don’t know what love is. You are just confused. You love Ava.”
“Mom. You’re right, I do love Ava. I love Ava the way I love Vilandra and Ianna. I’m not in love with her. I’m in love with Catherine. And I refuse to marry Ava. I want to marry Catherine.”
“WHAT?” The King roared. “What is this nonsense. I’ve heard enough.”
Zan slammed his fist down on the table. “You haven’t heard anything. You don’t even listen. You don’t even care about my happiness.”
“Boy, I suggest you watch your tone with me. I’m the King and I will not be spoken to that way.”
Zan pushed away from the table and stood up. “You’re also a Father. My Father. And I’m going to be with Catherine whether you approve or not.”
King Edric stood and walked to his son. “Zan, if you see that girl again, you will not be getting the throne.” He threatened.
Zan threw his hands in the air. “Fine. Let Vilandra and Rath have it. I don’t care. Let them rule this place where you aren’t allowed freedom. Where you can’t love who you love. They can have it.”
Zan stormed out of the dining hall and towards his room.
When he got upstairs he noticed Rath exiting Ianna’s room. Rath quietly shut the door behind him and then, not paying attention, ran straight into Zan.
“Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” Rath said nervously.
“What were you doing in Ianna’s room?” Zan asked his best friend.
“Um… I was uh… Well we were…” Rath was looking at the floor and twiddling his thumbs. “We were talking.”
“Uh… huh…” Zan said giving Rath a weird look. “What were you talking about?”
“Uh, nothing. I have to go. See ya later.” Rath ran off down the hall.
Zan looked strangely at Rath as he left, knowing something wasn’t right, but he went to his room to deal with his own problems.

Roswell, New Mexico - Sunday afternoon - Michael’s Apartment
“So Catherine and Zan were forced apart… Basically because of this whole destiny crap. Ironic.” Maria stated when Brody had stopped the story.
Liz glared at her, then turned her attention back to the group. “So Rath obviously has a secret. But what about Ava. Where is she during the time her fiancé is with another girl?”
“Ava was very quiet and shy.” Brody explained. “She knew something wasn’t right with Zan but she never questioned him. She was the kind of person who didn’t want to get in anyone’s way.
Courtney, who hadn’t said much in the past two days, finally spoke up. “I never knew all these details. I can’t believe all of this went on and no one ever knew. I mean I know the basis, but wow.”
“Yeah. Naseado never told me any of this.” Tess said.
“Well Naseado didn’t know. Naseado had a mission. Naseado did as he was told and was only told what was needed to protect you.”
“So what happens next?” Max asked moving slightly closer to Liz. Now that he knew Ava wasn’t his true love on Antar, he had a feeling him and Liz would be able to be together again.
“Well… after Zan’s fight with his parents he decides to confront Ava about everything that has been going on. He knows that she will be coming by around noon, like everyday, to see Ianna and to have lunch with her friends. Zan knows that this is it and he has to be straight forward with her, even if it does hurt her.”

Antar - The Same Day - The Palace
Zan stood pacing in the front lawn of the palace waiting for Ava. He was extremely nervous about seeing her. He knew he was going to have to tell her about Catherine and the thought of hurting Ava tore him up inside. She had always been very loyal and Zan had betrayed her. He paced a few more times when finally he saw her walking up towards him.
“Zan what are you doing?” Ava asked him, when she got nearer to him.
Zan was shaking nervously and started to sweat. “Ava, I have to talk to you.”
“Ok.” She said.
He led her over to a bench and they sat down. He turned his whole body towards her and took a deep breath.
“Ava… as you know, we’re betrothed. We’re destined to be married or whatever.” His palms were sweating and he wiped them on his pants.
“Yeah…” She said looking at him strangely.
“Well, I… I haven’t been honest with you lately.”
“Well what do you mean?” She asked. She was confused as to where this conversation was leading.
“Ava, I’ve been… well… I’ve kinda… I’ve been spending the past month with another girl.”
“Zan, I’m not quite sure I understand where this is going.” She admitted.
“Ava, I’m in love with someone else. I’m so sorry.”
Ava sat in shock for a moment. She had always known Zan didn’t love her the way she loved him, but he had never really said it before.
“Ava…?”
“I… I don’t know what to say to that Zan.” She said looking down at her lap.
He put his hand under her chin and tilted her head so she was looking at him. “Look Ava, I know that this is not how you expected things, but you need to know something. I love you Ava, I love you like I love Ianna and Vilandra. I would do anything for you. You are my best friend. You’ve always been loyal and you’ve always been there for me and I’ll never forget that. I’ll always be here for you.”
Ava smiled at looked at her friend. “That means a lot to me Zan. And I know you didn’t mean to hurt me. I understand you love someone else and I would never hold you back from that. We’re friends first and foremost forever.”
Zan sighed a sigh of relief and hugged Ava. “Thank you for understanding.”
“You’re welcome. Um.. Zan, I have a question.”
“Yeah?” He asked, pulling out of the embrace.
“What did you parents say to this?”
Zan rolled his eyes thinking of his parents. “Nothing good. Basically that if I didn’t marry you, I’d be giving the throne to Vilandra and Rath. I told them good riddens. They can have it.”
“So you gave up the throne?” Ava asked sad for Zan.
“Yeah.”
“I’m sorry.” She said sympathetically.
“It’s ok, let’s just go have lunch ok?”
* * *
Ava, Zan, Rath, Vilandra, Ianna, King Edric, and Queen Reina all sat around eating lunch in silence. The King and Queen did not know about Zan and Ava’s heartfelt talk and Zan wanted to keep it that way for awhile. He had to come up with a plan to convince them about Catherine. He sat at lunch thinking of a plan, of a way to get his parents to just listen to him. Especially his father. He was always unreasonable.
The King finally broke the silence with news that ruined Zan’s idea of a plan. “Well we have some news for all of you .” He said standing up. “Zan and Ava will be getting married at the end of the summer. We’ve talked it over with her parents and they’ve agreed.
Zan dropped his glass and as it shattered into a million pieces, he felt his heart break as well. It was over. He was marrying Ava and he had no chance with Catherine. He slammed his head down on the table and felt his whole world come crashing down around him when a little voice spoke up.
“Your Highness… with all due respect, I can’t marry Zan.”
Zan whipped his head up and looked at Ava.
“WHAT!?!?!” The King exclaimed!
“Sir, I’m only thirteen. I’m too young.”
The Queen scoffed. “Darling, I was only a year older than you when I married. It’ll be fine.”
“I’m sorry. I just… I’ve been thinking about this a lot and I can’t marry Zan. I’m not in love with him. I can’t marry someone I don’t love. I‘m sorry.”
Zan looked in awe at the little blonde girl who was throwing away her whole life for him.
The King was angry. Zan could see his eyes fill up with rage and he feared for Ava. His Father could be heartless when he wasn’t getting his way. “You don’t want to marry him? You don’t want to be a Queen someday? Fine. You’re willing to throw away a stable and comfortable future to find true love. That’s your own choice. You’re the one ruining your life.”
Ava was shaking in fear of the King, but she held strong. “I’m sorry your highness. Please excuse me now.” She said and exited.
“And you!” He said pointing at Zan. The King threw his plate at Zan. He ducked and the plate slammed against the wall and the food went flying. Rath, Vilandra, and Ianna were huddling together at the table afraid to leave.
Edric moved towards Zan and threw him up against the hard, cold wall. Zan felt his head smash against the wall and he winced in pain. His head felt like it was spinning but the King just held him there. Zan was quite sure he was yelling and his ears hurt from the noice. “You want to throw your life away as well for some girl you hardly know who has no money. Go ahead. I don’t care. You can do as you like. I’m done with you.”
The King let go of Zan and stormed out of the room. Zan fell to the floor and huddled himself against the wall, too scared to move. His head was throbbing with pain. He took his hand to the back of his head and felt a sticky substance he knew was blood. The Queen rushed to his side and helped him up.
“Oh Zan, you know you shouldn’t make him mad. Now look what you’ve done. Oh come on. Let’s get that wound cleaned up.”
The Queen started to help Zan out but turned to address the other three teens first. “Vilandra, Rath, if you decide you don’t want to get married. Don’t tell him, run away. Ianna… well you just better do as you’re told, you’re in enough trouble as it is.”
With those parting comments, Reina ushered Zan out of the room and left the three alone with their thoughts.
Next time on You Can't Hide From The Past:
Catherine and Zan have a very unhappy meeting. Father and Son come to terms with reality. Rath's secret comes out and Vilandra gets an unexpected visitor. [/b]

* * *

Part 9
Antar - The Palace - That Afternoon
Zan opened his door quietly, hoping it wouldn’t make any noise. He peaked his head out and looked cautiously down the left side of the hall. No one was there. He turned his head to the right side of the hall and saw no one. He sighed, being relieved, and quietly snuck down the hall and down the steps. When he reached the bottom of the steps he again peaked his head around to both sides to make sure the coast was clear. He tip toed to the door and slowly opened it.
“Zan!” He jumped at the loud of the familiar booming voice behind him.
“Yes Father?” He said turning on one foot to face the older man.
“What are you doing sneaking around here in the middle of the day?” He asked.
“I was going to see Catherine!” He said boldly. He decided not to fear his father anymore.
“Zan, come sit with me. I think we need to talk.” The King led Zan to the same bench where Zan had talked to Ava.
Zan cautiously sat down, watching his Father’s every move. The King then sat beside him. “Son, I really feel the need to apologize for my actions this morning.”
Zan was shocked and taken aback. His Father rarely apologized and never for his temper. “Ok…” Zan said slowly.
“You really love her, don’t you?” He asked.
Now Zan was just frightened. Was his Father asking about his personal life? Was he actually caring about something other than the future of Antar?
“I really do.” Zan answered.
The King touched his son’s shoulder. “Zan, if you really love this girl, then go… Marry her. I support you. I know that I don’t do a good job showing it, but I love you Zan. I love you and your sisters more than anything, even if it doesn’t seem like it.”
“Thanks Dad.” Zan hugged his Father. “I love you too. And you’ll love Catherine.”
The two men smiled at each other. “I gotta go see Catherine now.”
“How about if you bring her to dinner tomorrow night.” Edric suggested.
Really?” Zan asked excitedly. “Ok, I’ll ask her. Thanks!”
* * *
Zan ran all the way to Catherine’s house. He ran up to the front door, which is something he had never done, and knocked excitedly. He took in the atmosphere around him at this very moment. The sky was a light pinkish color, without a cloud in sight. He could smell the lilacs growing in Catherine’s garden. He inhaled and smiled because the lilac smell reminded him of Catherine. That was how she smelt. His hands trembled from nervousness. He knew that he would have to convince Catherine’s father. He inhaled once more and then the door swung open.
Catherine stood inside, just a few feet from Zan. It took all the strength he had to not grab her and start kissing her, but he remained calm. He took a small step toward her. “Catherine…” He murmured, a big smile on his face.
She took a step back and look nervous. “Zan, you have to leave.” She said abruptly.
He furrowed his eyebrows and frowned at her. “No, I came to tell you that we can be together. My Father wants you to come to dinner tomorrow night.”
“Zan! I can’t come to dinner. No. I mean, I won’t. My Father. Zan, what are you doing?” She said all at once, completely confused, but knowing she had to stay strong.
“Catherine.” He took another step toward her. She put her hand on his chest and pushed him out into the yard, she slammed the front door, and followed him.
“Zan, we are over. I mean, we never really were, but whatever it was, it’s done.”
“Catherine…” He pleaded. “You can’t possibly mean that? What happened?”
“Zan, forget me. Go home to your perfect live and forget me.”
“Catherine, I could as soon forget you as my existence.” He said, quoting their favorite book.
She looked angrily at him. “Don’t do that! Don’t quote that book, thinking it will make things better.”
“What will make things better?” he asked. His thoughts were in a whirlwind. He thought that Catherine would be overjoyed at the thought of them being able to be together.
“Nothing.” She said plainly. Nothing you can say will change my mind.” She yelled. She then calmed down a bit and started to be rational. He voice quieted. “My father doesn’t want me to see you. I have to listen to him Zan. He’s all I have.”
“No, you have me.” He said.
“Zan, listen. This morning, when my Father found us, he was so mad. He told me that I was to have nothing to do with the royal family at all. That I was to stay away from them. Then a few hours before you got here, he brought over an old neighbor. It was a boy that I had met when I first moved to Antar. Anyway… Zan, I can’t be with you, I’m betrothed now.”
Zan took a step back from her, in shock. His Catherine was going to be with someone else. That was impossible. He couldn’t imagine someone else marrying her. Touching her, kissing her soft red lips. No.
“No.” He said. “I love you.”
She moved toward him for the first time during their encounter. She delicately touched his cheek. “I’m sorry. This is just the way it has to be. I didn’t want this. I want to be with you, but I have to obey my Father. I’m sorry.”
He put his hand on top of hers and looked her straight in the eye. “Run away. Come home with me. My Mother and Father will help you, and then we can get married.”
“Zan, I can not run away. And we can’t get married. We are really young, Zan. And we are both engaged to someone else.”
He pulled away from her. “I’m not. Ava and I are not engaged anymore. We broke it off this morning. That’s why my Father wants you to come to dinner. To meet you.”
“I can’t. I’m sorry. Please, just go home before you make this worse. Before my Father comes home.”
Zan looked defeated. “Fine.” He said softly. But I still love you. I’ll love you forever. In this lifetime and in the next, and the one after that. I’ll never love anyone else the way I love you.”
He turned away from her, and headed back home. He walked slowly away from the only girl he’d ever love.
She watched him sadly. A single tear rolled down her cheek and she wiped it away with her hand, but after that one, came many, many more, and she turned and ran into the house and into her room. She flung herself onto her bed and sobbed loudly for her lost love.
* * *
Zan walked up the stairs tiredly, his mind replaying the events of that afternoon with Catherine. His legs felt heavy as his exhaustion set in. It was only now that he realized he hadn’t been sleeping much lately. Slowly he made it to the top of the stairs and walked past Vilandra’s bedroom. Then he started past Ianna’s when he heard something. He stopped and looked at her shut door. He moved quietly towards it and put his ear to the hard cold wood.
“Ianna, this has to end.” A male voice said. Zan couldn’t hear much, but the voice was familiar.
“Why? No one knows about us, we can keep meeting secretly.”
“Ianna, you know how I feel about you, but this can’t keep happening. Your brother will kill me. So will Vilandra and your parents.” Rath? Zan thought. Was that his best friend in there, talking of romance with Ianna?
“Rath…” Ianna said quietly. Yup, Zan was right. Ianna and Rath were having a secret affair. He couldn’t believe it.
“Goodbye Ianna.” He heard Rath say. He started towards his room quickly so that he wasn’t caught eavesdropping. He heard the door open and he quickened his pace.
“Zan?” Rath called out to him.
“Zan stopped and slowly turned to face his best friend. “Hey. I was just heading to bed, I’m really tired.”
“I know you heard that.” Rath told his best friend. “So now you know.”
Zan looked down at his feet. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to listen. I won’t tell anyone, I swear.”
“Ok. Thanks.” Rath said, then turned to go downstairs.
Zan continued on with his moping to his room. He opened the door and walked straight to his big bed. He plopped down on the soft mattress and sank into it. He turned on his side and stared at the fireplace. He checked the time, it was only early evening, but Zan couldn’t hold his heavy eyelids open any longer. He fell asleep.

Author's Note and Part 10
::Hope you guys enjoy this part. I feel like I may have lost some readers because the plot really changed from being what looked like a M/M story to not being an M/M story. I just want to say that I am a M/M fan and an M/L fan so I focus mainly on those two couples, adding the other characters in as necessary. I love all the characters but there are just too many for me to focus on all of them individually, so for this story, I'm mainly focusing on M/L and of course M/M. I have a plan for them. They will be a big part of the story, so don't lose hope just because it looks like they don't play a big role. Oh and please... FEEDBACK!!! I live off of it. And thanks to all my readers who leave it, and even those who don't, I just hope people are enjoying reading this as much as I love writing it.::
Part 10
Roswell, New Mexico - Michael’s Apartment - Sunday Night
“Interesting… very interesting.” Alex said, he then looked at his watch. “It’s 11:00, I better go home. We all have school tomorrow.”
“11:00???” Maria cried. She jumped up and looked at Liz. “We were supposed to work the dinner rush!!”
“Oh my God! My Dad is going to kill us!” Liz grabbed her jacket and her and Maria hurried out.
“Well… looks like we won’t be having a sleepover tonight.” Michael said.
The rest of the group stood up and got ready to leave. “How about if we meet here Friday night. I know we all have a lot to do this week with school and work. How does that sound?” Max asked.
The group agreed. “Ok then, Friday, after school here.”
* * *
The week dragged on for the group. They were impatiently anticipating the next parts of the story and couldn’t really keep their minds on anything else. They all gathered together on Wednesday in the quad for lunch. Between work, school, and other things, the group hadn’t gotten much time to talk, so they planned to all have lunch together, to talk about the past weekend.
“So can you believe we have a sister Max? Really, it’s weird. She could still be out there.” Isabel said.
“Yeah and she’s Michael’s alien lover… weird.” Maria shot, throwing a carrot at Michael’s head.
“Hey!” He said as it smacked him in the face. He glared at her and she giggled.
“Carrot head.” She laughed.
“Anyway…” Tess said interrupting the two, “This story is a lot different than what Naseado originally told me. Are you sure that this Larek is telling the truth?”
“Why would he lie?” Liz asked. “I mean, what does he gain? He was Zan’s advisor. I believe him.”
Max smiled at her.
“You would.” Tess mumbled.
The group turned and looked at her. “What the hell does that mean?” Maria asked, standing up for her best friend.
“Nothing.” she said, trying to drop it.
“No, if you have an opinion, just share it with us.” Max told her.
She put her hands on the table and leaned forward. “Fine! My point is, that Liz would love to believe that Max was never in love with me. Anything that let’s little Lizzie get back to her perfect life. As long as she’s happy, who gives a damn about anything else.
Liz was outraged. Her face face got tense and she balled her hands into fists. “Listen Tess. That has nothing to do with it. I believe Larek, because I believe Larek. Not because I want his story to be true. So ok, Max doesn’t love you, that just means there’s someone else in this world that he loves. Someone he gave up everything for. How do I know she won’t just pop up out of the blue like you did. Sometimes Tess, you can be so selfish. And Ava was so giving… how can you be her?”
Liz grabbed her tray and stormed out. Max followed close behind, but not before he gave Tess a death stare.
“You are such a bitch.” Maria told her, glaring. “I can’t believe how selfish you are. I wish you’d go back to where you came from.” Maria looked down at her food and continued eating in silence.
Tess took her lunch and left the table and finished eating by herself.
The group, or what was left of it, finished eating their lunch in complete silence.
* * *
“Liz!” Max said chasing after her. “Liz, wait.”
Liz walked quickly down the hall trying to avoid Max. She didn’t want to have one of those heart to heart soul mate talks at the moment.
“Liz!”
She stopped and sighed. “What Max?” She asked turning around to face him.
He walked toward her. “Liz, I know you’re upset… but, we should talk.”
“About what?” Liz said, she was still angry at Tess and she was about to take it out on Max.
“About us.” He said.
“Max! There is no “us”. There hasn’t been since the end of last year. Why can’t you just understand that. I’m so tired of this… this stuff with you. We are over Max, we don’t owe each other anything. Goodbye Max.” She walked away and left a very heartbroken Max standing in the hallway.

The CrashDown wasn’t very busy this Wednesday night. Liz and Maria were witnessing as usual and Mr. Parker was working the grill. He had them working all week to make up for the Sunday night shift they had missed.
“And then I called her a bitch and told her to go back to where she came from! It was great Liz, you would have loved it.” Maria told her best friend as they stood behind the counter, watching the door for more customers. The CrashDown wasn’t very busy this Wednesday night. Liz and Maria were witnessing as usual and Mr. Parker was working the grill. He had them working all week to make up for the Sunday night shift they had missed.
“Thanks Maria, I appreciate it.” Liz smiled.
“No problem Lizzie, you know what, I know how you feel, with Michael having his alien lover out there too, it’s weird isn’t it?”
“Yeah.” Liz said. Her and Maria started talking again when they heard the bell on the door ring. The girls looked to it and saw their favorite, or at that moment, no so favorite aliens, going to their regular booth.
Liz grumbled. “I’m not even in the mood for this. Why do they always sit in my section?”
“I’ll get ‘em Babe, don’t worry!” An overly chipper Maria stated. She happily went over to the table and smiled. “Welcome to the CrashDown, I’m Maria and I’ll be your server today, can I get you something to drink?”
The four stared strangely at her. “What’s going on?” Michael asked.
“I’m sorry?” Maria said, acting confused by their confusion.
Michael rolled his eyes. “Cherry coke.”
“I’ll have the same.” Max told her.
Isabel and Tess ordered water. Maria wrote it on her pad and then she smiled at the four.
“We’ll have those right out for you.” She put her pad in her apron pocket and walked casually to the counter.
“I need 2 cherry cokes and 2 waters… oh and Lizzie… put arsenic in one of the waters.. For Tess.”
* * *
“Ok what was that about?” Tess asked. “She was acting weird. Overly chipper and professional.”
Michael shrugged his shoulders. “It’s Maria, what do you expect.”
“Michael you have a weird girlfriend.” Isabel said, looking at her menu.
“She’s not my girlfriend.” He said defensively.
Isabel rolled her eyes and Max snickered. “Yeah, you two just end up in bed together. But she’s not your girlfriend.”
“Shut up Maxwell, no one asked you.” Michael grabbed his menu and looked at it, avoiding any further conversation about the subject.
Maria hurried back with their drinks and set them down for the four aliens. “Well have you decided what you want to eat?”
“I’ll have a Sigourney Weaver and Orbit Rings.” Michael said, not making eye contact with her.
“Ok.” She said, writing it on her pad. “And for you?” She looked at Max.
“A Will Smith. That’s all.”
She wrote that on her pad as well then looked at Isabel.
“Oh, me and Tess are gonna split an order of orbit rings.”
Maria smiled. She was about to say something when someone walked into the restaurant. She looked at the door and Courtney strolled on in and pulled up a chair to the booth, moving as close to Michael as humanly, well alienly, possible.
Maria smiled, making sure not to lose her professional attitude. “What can I get you Courtney?”
“Oh I just came in to get my check. But a water would be good.”
Maria headed back to the kitchen and looked at Liz. “Another water with arsenic.”
* * *
Liz headed to the back room and collapsed on the couch. It had been a long week. With the whole story telling and then the Tess thing, then the Max thing… she was stressed out. She hadn’t meant to be as mean to Max as she had been. All those things just kind of slipped out of her mouth and she felt bad, but she had to be straight with him. She was tired of all the games. Her and Max were just not meant to be, and he had to accept that.

Max watched Liz go into the back room and he looked at his four companions. “I have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Max got up from the booth and headed to the back of the resturant.
“The bathroom… sure.” Isabel said.
“That boy has it bad.” Courtney laughed, moving closer to Michael. He moved closer to Isabel trying to get away from her. He was afraid Maria would see them so close and get mad, and the last thing he needed right now was Maria mad at him.
He sighed as he watched her shuffle around trying to clean things up. She was so cute sweeping the floor, with her long hair up in two buns on either side of her head. She reminded him of Princess Leia from Star Wars with her hair like that. She was beautiful and he loved her. He stopped thinking then cursed himself silently. MUD, he thought, MUD. Can’t think about how she’s perfect. Damn. It wasn’t working. MUD, MUD, MUD, MUD, MUD!!!! Nope, no luck. The beautiful girl would not leave his mind. So he watched her silently, hoping no one noticed.

“Hey Liz.” Max said quietly as he entered the back of the CrashDown.
“Hey Max.” Liz responded. “What do you want?" She asked.
“I just wanted to talk.” He said. “That’s all.”
“Talk about what Max? I really thought we covered it today after lunch. Why won’t you just leave me alone.” She got up from the couch and started to walk up the stairs.
He grabbed her arm and turned her to him. “Liz, I can’t leave you alone. I love you.”
Liz yanked her arm away from him. “Stop it! Just please stop! I can’t take it anymore Max. I just can’t take this. From the day you saved my life, you’ve been this roller coaster Max, and I feel like the ride never ends. When you saved my life, and then you told me we couldn’t be together, I respected you and your decision. I didn’t like it, but I respected it. Why can’t you respect my decision Max? I mean, my God, why does it always have to be about you and about what you want? What about me? What about what’s best for me?”
Max was shocked. He didn’t know quite what to say. His whole world was falling in around him and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. Liz really didn’t want to be with him, and she thought he was selfish. Max took a step away from her and swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry Liz, I had no idea you felt that way. I’ll leave you alone.”
He turned from her and left, the door swung behind him as he went and Liz listened to it creak. She watched him grab his coat from the table and tell the group he was walking home. She saw him turn towards the back room with a sad look on his face, then quickly leave the restaurant.
She could feel the tears start to come but she pushed them back. She took a couple of deep breathes in order to pull herself together, then headed back out to help Maria close.

Courtney had left awhile ago, and Isabel and Tess were ready to go home as well. “Michael, you coming?” Tess asked.
Michael looked at them, then looked back at Maria. “No, I think I’m gonna stay for a little longer. I’ll walk. See ya guys tomorrow.”
The two girls smiled at him then left the CrashDown and walked to the jeep. Michael took a seat at the counter and set his arms on it and looked at Maria.
“What do you want?” She asked, as she wiped the counter down.
“Well, I was just gonna see if you wanted me to walk you home?”
She gave him a suspicious look. “You want to walk me home? Why?”
She asked.
“You know what, forget it.” He started to get up.
“I’m sorry.” She said, hoping he wouldn’t go. “I’m sorry. Yes, I would love for you to walk me home.”
He sighed and sat back down. “Ok then.”
“Maria, you can go.” Mr. Parker said from the back. Liz and I
can finish up.
“Ok.” Maria was not going to argue. That was more time with Michael, and she wanted more time with Michael.
“Let’s go.” She told him, and he followed her to the back. She grabbed her things and they left.

There was no moon and the sky was dark. Maria shivered and wrapped her arms around her. It was unusually cold for this time of the year and Maria was still in her CrashDown uniform.
Her and Michael walked quietly at first, neither of them really knowing what to say. Maria looked at her feet and Michael walked slightly behind her.
“So Spaceboy,” Maria said, breaking the silence. “What was the point of this little bonding activity.
Michael grumbled. “I was just trying to be nice.”
Maria rolled her eyes. “Yes, so you say. But Michael, you aren’t usually nice, so come on, what’s going on.”
Michael stopped walking and folded his arms on his chest. “You know what, you bitch and complain about how you wish I was a better boyfriend and you wish I would do this and that, but when I do something nice, you aren’t happy. So what is it that you want Maria? Please enlighten me.”
Maria faced him. “I don’t want you to be a better boyfriend. I love you for who you are. I just want to know what is going on with us. First you say we are together, then we aren’t. What is it?”
“Oh don’t even start. You are the one who said I had to choose, then you got in bed with me!”
“Oh please. You know, I’m sorry, I’ll never make a romantic gesture your way again. Forget we even dated.” She screamed.
“FINE!” He screamed back.
She walked towards him till she was right in his face. “FINE! Then that’s that. We’re done.”
“FINE!” He screamed again. He could feel her breathing on his face and he could feel her body heat so close to him. It was more than he could stand. He grabbed her arm and pulled her into him and kissed her long and hard.
She kissed him back and in no time the two were wrapped in each other’s arms kissing.
After a long while they finally pulled apart. “I wanna be with you.” He said quietly. “I love you.”
She smiled and hugged him. “I love you too SpaceBoy.”
* * *
* * *

For Tess.”
* * *
