Now many of you have questions about Sloane's escape and Sark's lack of but I assure that things will be dealt with by the end of the story. Of course that doesn't mean I won't open up a whole new can of worms.
PART 50
None of them who stood in front of Sloane’s office took what they saw at face value, instead storming in and searching every inch of the office to see if Sloane maybe hiding somewhere. They didn’t find Sloane, but Liz did manage to find a trigger that released the hidden entrance to a tunnel that they assumed lead out.
Liz looked at both Sark and Sydney, the two most informed people in there and asked. “How did we miss something like this? Any of us?”
Sydney was the only one that answered. “Sloane probably had it added after he was named partner or my Dad would have found out about it. He’s worked with Sloane in this office since SD6 was created.”
“We have to notify base camp immediately that we do not have Sloane secured so that a city wide search can be put together.” Vaughn stated.
“That is not necessary.” Sark butted in.
Liz narrowed her eyes at Sark. “You have something up your sleeve. What aren’t you telling us?”
Sark smirked a little. “That I might have placed a tracker on Sloane.”
“What?” Sydney exclaimed, “Why didn’t you tell us this earlier?”
“Because that bit of information did not need to be given at the time.” Sark retorted.
“Can you share the information now?” Liz asked annoyed.
“It’s a passive tracker that I injected into Sloane while he was unconscious in Tokyo. I knew that if I placed an active tracker on him, that it would be found almost immediately, but a passive one could not be traced until activated. I have the remote here in my jacket that will activate the tracker, after which we will be able to globally track Sloane through my laptop.” Sark explained as he pulled the remote from his suit coat.
“So go get the laptop so we can go after him.” Sydney said as she activated her comm. “Base camp, this is Mountaineer. We have secured control over SD6 but Sloane escaped.”
“Do you have any information on where Sloane has gone?” Jack asked in response.
Sydney’s eyes locked on Sark as he walked back into the office. “We do. It seems that Sark placed a tracker on Sloane, which are now able to track. Request permission to pursue.”
“Negative.” Jack said with obvious disappointment in his voice. “All available agents are occupied with securing the building and transporting the captives.”
“Then just a small team, myself, Vaughn, Liz, and two more agents. Together with Sark that would be six total, Sloane will not be expecting us to be able to find him so we will have the element of surprise.” Sydney argued. “We don’t have a lot of time, Sloane might find the tracker at any time.”
Jack knew that Sydney was correct and that time was of the essence. He also knew that if Sloane slipped away now, it could be a long time until they found him again. “You have a go-ahead. Keep in radio contact with Base Camp at all time, back up will be sent will it becomes available.”
“Copy.” Sydney stated before turning her attention to Sark who was working on his laptop, Liz watching over his shoulder. “Have you found anything yet?”
“I established the link to the tracker and located the signal. With that done, I am now running a corresponding map program to get an exact fix on his location.” Sark said enlightening them. “I have it, according to this, his location is an vacant airfield twenty miles north of here.”
“Then that’s where we’re heading.” Sydney stated before looking at Sark and Liz. “We have extra gear in the SUV for the two of you. Full tactical gear including comms Kevlar vests, extra ammunition as well but we are supposed to take Sloane alive so that he can stand trial.”
“Sloane will not go down easily.” Sark commented.
“But he will go down.” Sydney said then looked at the two CIA agents who had blowtorched Sloane’s office door and jerked her head towards the door. “You two are with us.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After transferring command to Weiss, Sydney and the others commandeered two of the SUVs for their pursuit of Sloane. Sydney drove one, taking Liz and Sark with her so to keep up to date on Sloane’s location while Vaughn drove the other SUV with the two other agents.
Although it was a tight fit, Liz and Sark both managed to change out of their work suits and into the tactical gear that Sydney provided them. When Liz asked why there was attire in their size as well as boots, Sydney simply stated that it was brought to prepare for any scenario. However a few things were left out, like additional tranquilizer guns for them to use so they would just have to work with the regular guns that they had.
Despite the fact that they were in Los Angeles and the roads were filled with traffic, it wasn’t long before they arrived at the perimeter gate of the airport. Sydney ignored the locks and chains on the gate and plowed the SUV through the barricade. They had no time to attempt a sneak approach.
Sydney slammed on the brakes once they reached the nearest of the two plane hangers, the largest buildings on the airport’s grounds. “Sark, can your program give us an exact location?”
“No, it does have its limits. I am only able to trace him to an area of within half a mile, nothing more detailed.” Sark explained, abhorring the fact that he had to admit fault even it was with his equipment. “However I am picking up a strong signal so he has not moved.”
“Looks like we’re going to have to flush him out.” Liz commented as she scanned the area.
“Exactly.” Sydney agreed. “We break into three teams, Liz is with me, Vaughn will go with Sark, while Agents Stevens and Agent Peek will take the third team. Everyone fan out and search this entire area. Be especially cautious, Arvin Sloane is considered to me one of the ten most dangerous people in the world. He might have a small unit of guards with him, hired guns or could simply be relying on his own skill to protect himself. Radio in if you find anything. So let’s move out.”
As Liz and Sydney headed off in one direction, Liz looked back towards Sark and Vaughn and saw a faint smirk on Sark’s face. He knew that Vaughn was not happy about the arrangement, but Sydney had wanted either her or Vaughn to be teamed with Sark, after all he was still a criminal who would find himself in a CIA cell despite the aid he had given them. Not to mention the whole connection that Vaughn now knew Sark had to Sydney.
The two CIA agents went to one of the hangers while Sark and Vaughn took the other hanger, leaving Liz and Sydney to explore the small outer buildings. There were several shacks and the control tower to look through and Sloane could be anywhere. It was obvious why he was there. Sloane needed to get out of the city as soon as possible and the conventional airports would be too dangerous for him to use to travel.
The shacks were empty and by all appearances, no one had been in them for some time. so they headed to the control tower. Once inside, they did see signs that someone had been there recently. They continued to search but were interrupted when the sound of gunfire echoed across the field and voices filled their ears. “We have located hostile forces and are taking fire.”
“Copy we are moving to intercept.” Sydney informed them.
Both of them moved quickly to exit the building. The stairs were narrow so Sydney was in the lead with Liz a few feet behind her as they went down. But when she reached the bottom, Liz found the door suddenly slammed in her face and she heard a bolt thrown from the outside to lock it.
Sydney too heard the door slam and whirled around to reopen it but instead found herself in the company of Sloane with his gun pointed directly between her eyes.
