Disclaimer: I don’t own any of these Roswell characters, I have borrowed them.( If I did Alex & Isabel would be living happily ever after. )

Author's Note: This is set post “Graduation”. It is in response to a challenge, of sorts, so credit goes to “Biged”. It’s quite a simple premise for this story - Is it possible that when they left Roswell at the end of “Graduation” they left someone behind?

I have no idea how long or involved this will be. From what I have gathered so far I feel this will be quite short, certainly less than ten parts.

Thanks to Kath7 and Cookieman1234 for being who you are and doing what you do.

Chapter 1

Liz simply allowed the sensation of being wrapped in Max’s strong arms wash over her. It was one of the few positives left in her life at the moment and she was determined to make the most of it while she could. They had all been through so much over recent months, and in the last few weeks in particular. Saying goodbye to their families in the manner that they did was never the plan, nor was it ever going to be easy but their actions had been forced upon them. Now they found themselves living out of bags and cases, travelling further and further away from their homes and loved ones, a clapped-out van there only means of transport. It wasn’t the most comfortable way to travel and it was only with the help of alien powers that it had made it this far. At least it didn’t draw any special attention, which was probably its main advantage they had all soon realised.

“I have to get up.” She moaned, regret evident in her voice.

“Just a little while longer.” Max pleaded.

“You can’t believe that I want to get up.” She stated incredulously to her spouse. “I could stay here forever given the alternatives and I’m shocked and maybe even a little hurt that you would think otherwise but you know I have to go and check on Isabel, see how she’s doing.” She finished. The slight smile that played on her lips informing her companion she was only feigning hurt pride.

“How is she doing?” Max asked solemnly as he planted a kiss on Liz’s forehead. He didn’t want to move on from their playful banter but he knew they had a bigger problem to deal with first before they could allow themselves some much needed alone time.

“She’s no worse.” Liz offered in a failed attempt to turn a negative into a positive.

“Which is code for she’s no better.” Max countered, tightening his grip on his partner. “I wish there was something I could do but she’s been like this for weeks. I want to help her but I don’t know how.”

Liz partially lifted herself up from where she lay fully clothed with Max on their motel room bed, the fading evening sun leaching through the broken blind that Max had promised to fix before night fall. She looked down on the man she had recently pledged her life to and all she could see was the anguish that he was trying to conceal behind his beautiful amber eyes. She knew he was hurting for his sister, as they all were, but none of them knew how to help her, which left Max feeling responsible somehow. As he always did.

“Max, I’m afraid the only thing that is going to help Isabel is time. In the last year or so she has realised her true feelings for Alex only to have him snatched away as she was beginning to act upon them. Then in some kind of knee-jerk reaction to his death she threw herself into what wasn’t exactly a loveless marriage but it was certainly ill advised and not based on mutual love and honesty as it should have been.” Liz let out a heavy sigh before continuing. “Now, not only do we have the FBI on our trail but Isabel had to say goodbye to the thing she held most dear, namely your parents, so it is only natural that she should feel depressed and a little lost at the moment.”

Max reached up and started to run his fingers through Liz’s long, silky hair. “I understand all of that Liz, really I do, but I can’t help feeling that there isn’t any light at the end of the tunnel. I know why she is upset and I understand but I’m worried we don’t have anyway of pulling her out of her despair. She needs something to love, something to care about. Even something to fight for as long as it’s something she cares about. She needs to give her life meaning again, a purpose but for the life of me I don’t know where something like that will come from.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~

At the same time 600 miles away

“Any change?”

“No, Doctor.” The nurse replied, a smile suddenly playing on her lips.

“Have I said something to amuse you, Nurse Brown?” The specialist enquired. A smile of his own now apparent, informing the junior staff member he was in no way annoyed at her unexpected change in demeanour.

“No, Doctor.” She shook her head vigorously. “It’s just I still find it heart warming that you are so optimistic with regards to Adam’s condition after all this time.”

The smile slowly fell from the middle-aged consultant’s face as he turned to look at the young man who was laid out on the hospital bed in the high dependency unit. It wasn’t lost on him, the irony that this unidentified man had ended up with an almost permanent bed in the high dependency ward when in truth he required less attention than most standard patients. The fact that they had fewer requirements for high dependency beds than they did for normal hospital beds was a testament to the standard of treatment and care they afforded their patients. The off-shoot of this was that when it came time to find a long term bed for Adam a compromise was reached and he was moved to his current location. It gave them both time and space to help with his rehabilitation, such as it was. His mind may not have been functioning but the staff worked long and hard to keep his muscles and joints in constant use to prevent further damage from being done.

It had been over a year since the unconscious body of a solitary man had been found out in the wilderness that surrounded Roswell. If memory served him correctly he seemed to remember the mention of some day trippers finding the ravaged body of his young patient somewhere out in the desert on a well known hiking trail. Unfortunately that area of land was famed for its harsh climate and unforgiving landscape and it was only sheer luck that he had been found at all, let alone still clinging to life by a thread. By the time he had been discovered he had been so near death from both the ravages of the ferocious sun and also whatever it was that caused his underlying medical problems that no one believed he would survive the night let alone an entire year.

The fact that he had been found on a tourist trail and there was no indication of a local boy in his late teens being reported missing meant they focused their hard work on finding his true identity using a national database for missing people with specific efforts made in the nearby larger towns and cities such as Santa Fe, Albuquerque and further a field to places like Austin and Phoenix. Sadly, they had encountered no success.

Upon his arrival at the local hospital his initial treatment for exposure and extreme sunstroke simply delayed the diagnosis of an even more alarming condition. After being transferred to the better equipped medical centre at Santa Fe several brain scans and numerous examinations had left the medical community with little, if anything, to go on other than this young patient had endured a severe head trauma that was now manifesting itself as a persistent, vegetative state.

“I am right aren’t I, Peter?” The nurse interrupted his thoughts, her switch to using his first name confirming the personal interest she had taken in this particular case. “The chances of Adam regaining consciousness are slim at best?”

“Sadly, I’m afraid you are right, Eve.” Peter confirmed. “It’s been known to happen but is incredibly unlikely for someone to suffer such a trauma, whatever it was that caused his problems, and to come through unscathed. I still deem it a minor miracle that he has held on this long. It’s true to say his brainwave patterns are nothing like we have seen before but there is no indication that there is anyone left inside. I’m sorry to say that whatever and whoever this young man was we are not likely to see it again.”

“But didn’t you say there had been a change in the pattern in recent weeks?” She pressed. “Isn’t that an indication that he might be waking up?”

“Again, I’m sorry Eve but it is extremely unlikely.” The Doctor countered ruefully, sad at having to quash her optimism. “We have never before seen brainwave patterns like those exhibited by Adam over the last year and although the change did cause us to re-examine his situation I’m afraid there is nothing to suggest any sort of recovery. For all we know if he does ever wake up he is most likely already lost to us. I find the term ‘Vegetable’ very distasteful but in this case I’m sorry to say it may well be apt.”

The young nurse turned her attention to her motionless patient after the practitioner had left to continue his rounds, her only distraction now the sound of the heart monitor as it registered his steady heartbeat. Pausing for a moment she thought back to that fateful night when she first encountered her mystery man. She had been working the night shift when his burnt and battered body had been transferred from Roswell to the medical centre. After the initial flourish of treatment his bodily ailments were brought under control but it soon became clear that a much longer journey was in store for their unidentified casualty.

It became apparent very quickly that she would be seeing a lot of her new charge, they were both in this for the duration, so when it came time to christen him she fought long and hard not to simply allow them to tag him with the standard ‘John Doe’ moniker along with an attached number. With a name like ‘Eve’ she could only see him as her very own ‘Adam’ and she finally convinced the senior medical staff, claiming she picked Adam simply because alphabetically it was one of the first boys names you could come up with. She ignored the knowing looks she received from the staff who knew her on a more personal level, which meant they knew the true story behind their patient’s new name.

“Good evening Adam.” She greeted her patient tenderly. “I can sense we’re going to have another night of scintillating conversation and witty banter.” She joked.

“Hey Eve.” A familiar voice called.

Eve turned to see her fellow nurse, Sarah Larson, entering the secluded section of the ward. “Hi Sarah. How are things?”

“Pretty quiet I’m pleased to report.” She smiled in reply. “How’s your Mr Wonderful?”

Eve looked back at her friend to see an amused look on her face. “Firstly, he is not my Mr Wonderful.” She countered. “And secondly, I’d really rather you didn’t say things like that as I feel we are being disrespectful to not only our guest here but my sometimes boyfriend.”

“Simon?” Sarah arched an eyebrow in surprise. “I thought he was long gone. I thought you said you were better off without him?”

“I was…I mean I am.” Eve corrected herself. “It’s just he was fine most of the time and it’s great to have someone to come home to but how can you get serious about a guy who feels threatened by a patient in a coma?”

“Beats me.” Sarah shrugged.

“Oh I wouldn’t look so innocent if I were you.” Eve chastised her friend. “I think you planted the seeds of doubt by telling him I spent each day giving a boy in his late teens who was tall and toned a sponge bath.”

“I was kidding.” She said defensively. “Who knew he was so lacking when it came to both self-confidence and a sense of humour?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“How is she?” Max questioned softly as he squeezed his returning wife tightly to his chest.

“Not good.” Liz replied, her voice little more than a whisper. “In spite of all that we have seen and battled against I can’t even begin to comprehend what she has been through. I know we all had to say goodbye to our lives and families when we left but she seems to have lost so much more. I’ve tried to talk to her about it, so has Maria, but she seems to be in this spiral of depression and I’m worried if we don’t do something soon we’ll never get her back.”

Max released his grip on his newly acquired wife and turned towards the door. “I’ll have a word, not that I think it will do any good.”

“Take it easy on her Max.” Liz gently instructed her partner. “She’s trying her best to hold it together and I don’t think it will take much to push her over the edge.”

With a final, solemn glance he opened the door to the motel room, stepped through and closed it behind him. When he stepped outside he was unsurprised to bump into Michael. “Keeping watch?”

“Huh?” It became clear that Michael was in some kind of daydream when Max’s simply question was able to catch him off guard. “What? Sorry, I was a million miles away.”

“Thinking about Isabel?” Max queried softly, not wishing to pry. “She’ll be back to normal soon enough and then you might not have to share with Kyle for much longer after that.” Max tried not to smile at that last comment.

“Trust me when I tell you that sharing with Kyle Valenti is the least of my worries, I have other things on my mind.” Michael stated firmly. “If I’ve lasted this long I can go another few months if required don’t you worry. All I’m interested in is getting Isabel back to her old self and if she needs time then that’s what we’ll give her.”

Max nodded silently to Michael’s heartfelt statement. The two young men stood in silence for a couple of minutes before Max took a deep breath, clearly readying himself for something. “Have you been in to see her?”

Michael shook his head slowly. “I tried but Maria stopped me before I got inside. I think both she and Liz were with her and she was having a particularly bad time if the pained expression on Maria’s face was anything to go by.”

Max raised a hand and patted his big friends shoulder in a show of solidarity before he moved off towards the next room, which contained Maria and Isabel. He tapped gently on the door before opening it and going in. The first thing that hit him was how warm the room was. Despite how noticeably warm it was, which was confirmed by the sight of Maria sitting up on one of the beds in what amounted to little more than shorts and a t-shirt, the sight that caught Max’s eye made his heart sink. He could see what could only have been Isabel hidden beneath a mountain of sheets and blankets. Only the tell tale sign of the blankets moving up and down in time with Isabel’s breathing gave her existence away.

“Hi Max, Do you want me to leave?” Maria asked softly as she dropped her magazine.

Max shook his head but remained silent as he moved over to the far bed and sat down, placing a loving hand on his buried sister.

“I’m fine, Max.” A muffled voice called. “I’ve tried to tell both Maria and Liz that I’ll be OK but I just need a little time to get myself out of this funk that I seem to be in. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to cause you all problems but I need to get my head straight first.”

“That’s fine, Iz.” He tried to reassure his sister. “We’ve taken ourselves away from the immediate danger for now so if you need time to set things right in your mind then time is what you shall have but I’m getting a little worried about your new habit of hibernating under a mountain of blankets and that’s nothing to say of the heat in here. I’m also getting a little worried about poor Maria, she looks like she’s got heat-stroke.”

After a momentary pause there was much shuffling about beneath the mound of bedclothes before a bedraggled looking Isabel slowly surfaced by sticking her face out of the side of the bedcovers. “God! Do I look that bad?” She queried, after seeing the look on Maria’s face as her friend stared at her.

“Sadly my dear sister...” Max gave her a sympathetic look. “…I think Maria might be holding back as she is your friend. I don’t wish to be mean but I don’t think you should go anywhere near a mirror at the moment.”

Upon hearing that Isabel threw back the bedclothes and marched into the bathroom. “Oh My God!” She screamed, running back out into the bedroom just in time to see Michael pile in through the front door.

“What the hell’s happening?” Michael cried, ready for anything.

“Have you seen my face?” Isabel yelled.

“Your face?” Michael echoed as he looked at Max. “Your face?” He repeated as he now turned to look at Maria. “You have got to be kidding me!” He cried as he slammed the door behind him as he left.

“I’m no expert.” Max gently offered. “But I think a long, hot shower followed by a change of bedclothes might be in order.”

“We have clean bedding.” Maria cut in. “They left it earlier when Isabel refused to leave the bed.” She pointed at the pile of fresh sheets that sat on the table.

Isabel couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed when she heard that. She turned to her brother. “Max, do you mind if I take a shower while you go and send Liz back in so I can talk to her and Maria? I don’t mean to be rude but it’s a girl thing.”

“No that’s fine.” Max smiled as he lifted himself up off of the bed. “Michael, Kyle and I can go and get some food and we’ll leave you to it.”

Max left the girl’s room feeling a million times better than when he had gone in. It was true to say he hadn’t exactly done an awful lot while he was in there but Isabel out of bed and asking for Liz and Maria was a huge step forward. Plus it meant the boys could finally go and get some much needed food.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Don’t let them catch you in here.” Sarah warned Eve. “I know you’re on your break but I don’t think you are supposed to spend it in the company of unconscious patients.”

Eve shrugged and smiled at her friend. “It’s so quiet and out of the way back here that I doubt anyone who actually does any work around here would ever find me plus I find his presence somewhat reassuring.”

“Really?” Sarah questioned, now fully intrigued by her friend’s statement.

“Don’t you?” Eve asked in surprise when it became clear that her comment was news to her friend. “I mean look at him. He’s in his late teens, maybe early twenties. He’s tall, lean and attractive and seems to have led a good life if outward signs are anything to go by. Doesn’t it fascinate you…wondering who or what he might be?” She pressed. “He could have been the captain of the football team or the world’s biggest loner. He could have gone on to invent a cure for cancer or ended up at the top of a clock tower with a rifle. His life was one of endless possibilities and yet here he lies and if Peter Ellington is to be believed he will never wake up.” Suddenly she looked mournful. “I mean it all seems such a waste and I can’t believe that no one has come to claim him. There has to be someone out there that wants or needs this young man. Someone must have loved him.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“How do I look?” Isabel asked her two friends after she finally stepped out of the bathroom having spent the better part of an hour getting washed and cleaned up.

“As long as it doesn’t get me vaporised for my comments I have to say that it’s a vast improvement on Isabel circa an hour ago.” Liz admitted. “Sadly, Isabel, you have set yourself some pretty high standards when it comes to how you look so your slight dip in recent weeks has come as somewhat of a shock to all of us.”

“We all have bad hair days.” Maria interjected. “We’re just not used to seeing them from you.”

“Speaking of bad hair days.” Isabel gazed at her friends with a pensive look firmly planted on her beautiful features. “I’ve been thinking…” She allowed herself to trail off.

Liz swapped looks with Maria before looking back at their friend. “Thinking what?” She pressed gently.

“Thinking this.”

As both girls sat in mild confusion Isabel took a deep breath to steady herself and lifted her hands to engulf her forehead where her hairline began. As her two friends watched in near disbelief Isabel slowly but deliberately pulled her hands back over her head and as she did so she not only changed the colour of her brown hair to a more familiar blond hue she also lengthened it down to just below her shoulders.

“I take it you are going for a retro look with your hair.” Maria stated rather breathlessly having just seen an impressive display of alien power. “But can I also say it’s a welcome return to a very good look for you.”

Isabel grinned broadly at hearing the exact reaction she was looking for from her friend. She turned to look at Liz, her face taking on a more apprehensive look as she waited for her much needed second opinion. Her heart sank when she saw what almost looked like a tear come to her friends eye.

“No…no you misunderstand.” Liz called, as she quickly leapt to her feet and wrapped an arm around her friend once she was within reaching distance. “You look beautiful Isabel, your best look as Maria said. The reason for the tears was that as soon as you took on a more familiar look it made me think of one person and rather strangely I don’t mean you.”

Instantly all three girls were thinking about the same, absent friend. Liz reached up and tucked a stray hair behind her tall friend’s ear. “He always thought you were the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and I know he always loved how you looked with your long blond hair and immaculate make up but you were so much more to him than that. I’ll be honest and say I was sad when you changed your hair but I understood you were starting a new passage in your life and you were looking for a fresh start.”

“After what we have been through recently I feel the need for things that comfort me.” She explained. “I’ve had long blond hair for most of my life and it feels like a welcome return.”

“Don’t forget that any description of you now is with short brown hair so you win both ways.” Maria added cheerfully.

Unexpectedly Isabel threw her hands to her face and burst into tears.

Maria turned to look at Liz, a pained expression on her face. “What did I say?”

“You didn’t say anything.” She tried to reassure Maria as she moved Isabel to her bed and motioned for her to sit down. “I just think things are getting a little too much for Isabel at the moment and she’s feeling a little over-awed.”

Maria moved silently to the other side from where Liz was standing and sat down, pulling one of Isabel’s hands into her own. She didn’t look to say anything, she simply wanted to let Isabel know she was there for her in any way that she needed. I squeeze of her hand from Isabel told her that the message had been gratefully received.

Eventually the tears began to subside and Liz finally sat down next to Isabel, offering her friend a much needed tissue. “I’m not looking to force you Isabel but we all know something has been going on with you, something that you have been keeping to yourself. Initially I thought it was simply what has occurred over recent weeks and months. God knows it would be enough to push anyone to the brink of despair but I’m beginning to think there is more to it than that. Am I right?”

Liz got her answer when Isabel silently nodded in agreement.

“You know we love you Isabel and if there is anything that we can do to help you we will. You know that, right?” Maria queried.

Again they received a silent nod.

“In your own time Isabel just talk to us.” Liz offered. “Whatever it is that is playing on your mind we want to help. Is it Jesse or your parents?”

This time Isabel shook her head but it also became clear she was about to speak. “I feel so silly and such a fraud as we have all been through the same thing but I seem to be the only one who is struggling to come to terms with it.”

“No one’s judging you, Isabel.” Maria countered. “We each deal with what has happened in our own way.”

“That’s just it.” Isabel interrupted. “I understand and agree with the things you are saying but it will probably surprise you to find out that what is causing my problems isn’t anything to do with those things you have mentioned.”

“They’re not?” Now Liz was really confused. “We just assumed you were upset about leaving your family or leaving Jesse. Are you saying they aren’t what’s upsetting you?”

Isabel sat quietly for a moment and let out a heavy sigh. “You’re only going to say I’m going mad or that my mind is reacting to the trauma of what we have been through.”

“Isabel.” Maria cut in, tightening her grip on her friend. “Just tell us.”

Again Isabel paused but this time it was only for a moment before she began to explain. “After Alex died I used to see him.”

“What?” Liz asked in amazement. Maria stayed quiet as Liz had beaten her to the exclamation of disbelief.

Isabel smiled softly when she thought back to his visits. “It only happened a few times. Even Alex himself told me he was just a figment of my own imagination. My subconscious had summoned him up when I needed him most.”

“But?” Liz pressed gently but firmly.

“But now I’m not so sure.” Isabel shrugged. “Things have been happening that I can’t explain, things that have never happened before and I’m beginning to think its Alex.”

“Oh Sweetie.” Maria wrapped an arm around her distraught friend. “No one wants Alex back more than I do but Max tried to save him and couldn’t, he saw the body. We went to his funeral. Please don’t do this to yourself. Wishing for something that is never going to happen is only going to make your problems worse.”

“Don’t you think I know?” Isabel exclaimed as she pulled herself free from her friends grasp and stood up. “Don’t you think I know how mad I sound, how stupid I must seem to you now but I know something is happening. The further I move away from Roswell the stronger the feelings I have calling me back. Alex has always been there, deep in my mind but I always thought he was playing some kind of Jiminy Cricket character…you know, like in Pinocchio. I thought he was acting as some kind of little voice of reason…like my conscience. I never doubted that he died last year, not until now that is.”

“Isabel, I know you’re upset but this is just madness.” Liz was trying to hold back but she couldn’t allow this to carry on. “He’s dead and that’s all there is to it!” She stated firmly. “What more proof do you need?”

“That’s exactly my point, Liz.” Isabel now focused her attention on the one person it would be most difficult to convince of her argument. “It’s not like we are normal people living a normal life. If we were, a dead person would be a dead person and there would be no two-ways about it. But we’re not normal. Don’t forget that we are the people who live in the twilight zone. Think about the things we have seen, the things we have done. You of all people can’t forget what Max can do and more to the point what Tess could do. She could make us see anything she wanted us to see. Did Max really climb into the back of that van? Was it really Alex in that car crash?”

“Isabel, I love you and your words are breaking my heart because God only knows how much I want him back but this is just wild, wishful thinking on your part.” It was clear now that Liz was close to losing it. “All you’re doing by building up your hopes and the hopes of those around you is setting us all up for a huge fall.”

“Then you tell me!” Isabel insisted. “You tell me what is going on in my head. I’ve been dreaming each and every night for the last few weeks but when I wake up I can’t remember a thing. I can’t remember anything about it. It’s just a blank slate…completely black.”

“And from that you deduce that Alex is trying to contact you?” Liz asked curtly.

Isabel looked at her petit friend before letting out a heavy sigh. “Do you not think I know how mad I sound, how ludicrous I appear but what am I meant to do, ignore it? What if Alex is really trying to contact me, how would I feel if I simply ignored him and I wasn’t there for him?”

“But how are you going to prove otherwise?” Liz asked, the scientist within her rising to the surface.

That question brought Isabel to a grinding halt. Tears were now evident in her eyes. “Do you think I want this?” She asked as she started to cry uncontrollably. “Do you think I haven’t tried to deny what I have been feeling? I have no answers, only questions. Maybe I am losing my mind but you asked me to tell you and I did, for whatever its worth.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“She thinks Alex is trying to contact her?” The disbelief was unmistakable in Max’s voice.

Liz nodded. “I know it sounds like madness and so does Isabel but I think something is going on with her while she is on the dream plain and it’s causing her to come up with all these outlandish ideas.”

“Did she say what it is, this problem while she is sleeping?” Max questioned.

Liz shrugged lightly. “She mentioned that she has been dreaming but when she wakes up she can’t remember anything. She said it was like a blank slate…just black.”

Max frowned. “Well, which is it? She either can’t remember anything or it is blank, it can’t be both.”

“I know.” Liz nodded. “I was thinking about that and the only thing I can come up with is that when she is dreaming, wherever she is going, it’s just a void. There’s nothing there. That’s why she can’t remember anything, there’s nothing to remember.”

Max scrubbed at his face with his hands. “God! I knew something was wrong but I never imagined anything like this in my wildest dreams, poor Isabel.”

“Well at least it is now out in the open.” Liz couldn’t hide her relief at being able to make that statement. “It would have only festered if she had kept it to herself but now we know we can try and help her interpret what she is feeling. Find out what is really going on.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Isabel lay on her bed looking up at the ceiling. It had been a few hours since she had told Liz and Maria about her feelings and the more she thought about it the more stupid she felt. What had she been thinking? Telling them that Alex was alive. Maybe it was wishful thinking on her part but clearly she should have kept it to herself. She glanced to her right and found Maria sitting upright in bed reading. “Do you think I’m ready for the Looney bin?”

Maria dropped her book and turned to look at her friend, a broad smile on her face. “Isabel, if anything I think you’re the most sane one amongst us. You are the only one who knows what you have been going through these last few weeks. You’re the only one who can interpret what you see on the dream plain, not even Max or Michael can help you there. As for Tess, you are preaching to the choir on that one. Who knows what she made us ‘think’ we saw. But…”

“I knew it was going too well.” Isabel joked. “I knew there had to be a but!”

“…we can’t let her win.” Maria finished. “We could spend the rest of our lives second guessing exactly what that bitch did to us and all it will achieve is to allow her to get at us from beyond the grave. We have to break free from her clutches and make sure she doesn’t win.”

“So you don’t think I am losing my mind but you also don’t think I am right.” Isabel surmised.

“With the exception of you I don’t think there would be anyone happier than me if we ever found out that Alex was still alive but you’d need proof.” Suddenly Maria looked sad. “As I firmly believe that Tess killed poor Alex I really don’t think you will ever find any.”

Isabel felt tears stinging at her eyes as she turned away. She knew Maria was right, just as Liz had been earlier but it hurt all the same. ‘Maria’s right’ she thought to herself. ‘I need to put this to bed once and for all.’

She thought about reaching into her bag where she kept a picture of Alex discreetly hidden but she realised she didn’t need it. If this was going to work she wouldn’t need a picture. She closed her eyes and slowed her breathing. What she was trying she had only done once before. That had been when Max had been held captive in the White room. It had been the only time when she had tried to contact someone who wasn’t in a dream state. Taking Maria’s words to heart she knew she had to either put up or shut up and if she wanted to get on with her life she needed to leave behind fanciful thoughts of her long dead boyfriend being alive.

Suddenly Isabel got a fright. She was no longer lying on her bed so she had clearly entered some kind of dream world, or something similar. The reason for the fright was it was completely black, as it had been in her dreams…it was simply a void. She suddenly realised that she didn’t know what to do next. Was she meant to call out or command his appearance? She didn’t know.

Now feeling rather ridiculous given her current position she felt like leaving but just before she did she thought she should at least give it a try, no matter how foolish it made her feel. She owed Alex that much at least. She opened her mind fully, concentrating on just one thing, the only thing that mattered to her, Alex. She simply sent out all her feelings of longing and love that she still held for the young man. Feelings she knew she would always have. She no longer felt self-conscious as she promised herself, given past actions, never to deny what she felt for her erstwhile boyfriend. She simply stood in the open void and willed him to her.

For a moment, but only for a moment, she thought she felt something. She thought she could feel him reaching out to her in an attempt to connect but then…nothing.

Finally, and rather unsurprisingly, the reality of the situation hit her and she went straight back to feeling foolish. What had she been thinking, that she could simply command her long dead former boyfriend back to life simply because it would solve so many of her problems? She tried not to let the tears flow, simply letting the thought that she had tried her best to comfort her as she moved back to consciousness, her night’s adventure now behind her and her thoughts of a living, breathing Alex now put to rest. It was clear that she wanted him to be alive and well more than anything else in this or any other world but it was also clear that it was never going to happen.

The final thought that sat with her made her heart break. She knew, as did those that had met him, that Alex was too good for this world. They say that only the good die young and unfortunately Alex Whitman was testament to that statement. It was time for her to move on and make something of her life in the way that Alex would have wanted her to. If she couldn’t force herself to get on with life for her own sake then she would do it out of love and respect for the only man she had truly loved. The only man she would ever love. In fact, the only man she had ever let in.

Eve walked along the silent corridor as she carried the two cups of coffee she had gone to the staff lounge to collect. When they worked together both she and Sarah took it in turns to get the coffee but it seemed that her turn came round more often than Sarah’s, which was odd. She smiled to herself at that thought.

Suddenly she was surprised to see Sarah coming the other way, a look of panic on her normally calm features. “Eve, have you seen Doctor Ellington? I need to find him urgently!”

A cold shudder ran through Eve’s body, something was desperately wrong. “Sarah, what it is it, what’s happened?”

“It’s Adam! I think he’s waking up!”

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who took the time to leave feedback. It's always appreciated but never more so than at the start of a story. Also can I just say thanks to "Biged" who was kind enough to make the banner for this story, which I love. Thanks Ed, you're a top man. Cheers, David

Chapter 2

“You should go home.” Doctor Peter Ellington suggested sympathetically to Eve as she watched silently from the edge of Adam’s room. “Your shift ended over an hour ago and you really need to go and get some sleep.”

Eve smiled warmly at her caring friend. “I can’t go home, I’m afraid I’ll miss something.”

She had witnessed Peter and several senior colleagues scurry around Adam’s bed while making lots of hushed comments that only they could make out. She had watched as the initial enthusiasm and excitement of Adam waking up was replaced my looks of bewilderment and copious amounts of head scratching. It wasn’t long before minutes had become hours and hours had become the entire night with very little, if any, progress made when it came to understanding Adam’s current condition.

Suddenly Peter took Eve’s hand and slowly led her from where she had been leaning in the doorway of the busy ward. He guided her gently to a small row of chairs and sat her down before removing his doctor’s coat and sitting down beside her.

“Eve, I know you already know a lot of what I am about to tell you but we both know how close you feel to young Adam and I know how personal all this is to you so I’m beginning to think that it might be clouding your judgement somewhat.” He began. “I’ll be the first to admit that I was clearly wrong when I said that Adam would never wake up but as unlikely and as amazing as it is there are now further things to consider. Things that I think you need to get clear in your head now to avoid some bitter disappointment in the days and weeks that lie ahead.”

“I hear what you are saying Peter and I appreciate your honesty, really I do. I know you are only looking out for me but how can I not allow my hopes to build? I don’t blame you for your diagnosis, I’ve read as much about comas as anyone in this hospital over the last year and I know how difficult it can be to make a diagnosis with any real confidence. I know that with each day that passes the chances of the coma victim waking up decrease. I also know that should they wake up the chances of them being unaffected by what they have been through is remote to say the least but I’ve just always had this feeling that he would wake up and finally he has.” Her face simply lit up as she described how she felt. “Now that he is awake I just feel that he is going to get better or at least to the stage where we can find out who he is and how he got here.”

Peter eyed the young nurse for a moment. He couldn’t deny her optimism was infectious. “And there’s nothing I can do to change your mind, or at least to calm your assertion that he will recover fully?”

“Peter, if you haven’t already realised it over the time we have known each other I am very much a glass is half full girl, I’m an eternal optimist. It doesn’t mean I believe in fairy tales or that I can’t see the downside of things it just means I know there is nothing to lose by thinking positively.” She explained. “If Adam doesn’t fully recover it won’t be for the want of my trying and at least that way I can look myself in the mirror knowing I did my best.”

Again Peter just sat and stared at this young angel. “Tell me, are all the nurses here like you?”

“If you mean overworked, underappreciated and underpaid, then the answer is yes.” She smiled broadly as they both stood up. As she turned slightly she could look through the open door to Adam’s bed and see a couple of nurses still hovering around him, looking to get him settled now that the other staff were beginning to leave. “I know it is going to be a long, hard fight before we see any signs of recovery, if at all, but I promised him I was in this until the end and I can hardly lie to an unconscious patient now can I?”

“How about we make a deal?” Peter finally decided on a compromise. “I know you are due back here this evening and you’ll be no good to anyone if you haven’t had your sleep so how about you go home now and try to sleep? I’ll inform the entire team that is looking into Adam’s case that if there is the slightest change in his condition they are to call you.”

“You’re not going to let this go, are you?” She asked with a smile.

“How can I?” He questioned, echoing her smile. “I have the welfare of my number one nurse to consider.”

“Well as long as you promise to let me know.” She turned to walk away but stopped, clearly thinking about something. Suddenly, and somewhat surprisingly, she turned quickly and approached Peter. Without any hesitation she leaned up on her tip-toes and gave the dazed doctor a kiss on the cheek before turning to walk away again.

“Not that I am complaining but what was that for?” He called after Eve.

Eve glanced over her shoulder with a smile as she continued to march down the hallway. “For indulging me over these last few months and for keeping my hopes alive.”

Kyle simply sat staring at his plate.

“What’s the problem now?” Michael growled as he looked up from his breakfast.

“I asked for crispy bacon.” Kyle looked up from his plate at Michael with a look of injustice firmly fixed on his face. “Does that look like crispy bacon to you?”

“Considering some of the other things I have seen you stuff down your neck I would have thought how well done your bacon is cooked would be of little or no consequence to you. I doubt it will even touch the sides.” Michael stated candidly.

Kyle held up a hand in protest. “First of all dude, people in glass houses. Secondly, keeping in mind I am talking to you, a former worker in the food preparation industry, I thought I might get at least a little sympathy and support.”

“That’s probably where your problem lies.” Michael reasoned. “As a former service provider I have had more than my fair share of unfounded moans and complaints. If it isn’t cooked enough it’s cooked too much. If it isn’t too spicy it’s too plain. Trust me when I tell you that cooking food for people as a way of earning a living is not something I would recommend.”

“So I’m supposed to just put up with my undercooked bacon?” Kyle asked indignantly.

“For God sake!” Michael exclaimed. He quickly glanced around the small diner and once he had made sure the coast was clear he reached over and held his hand over Kyle’s plate for a moment. After a few short seconds Michael pulled his hand back and the sound of the bacon sizzling on his breakfast platter sent Kyle’s taste buds into overdrive.

“Thanks man.” Kyle offered as he tucked into his now ever so crispy bacon. “I knew there was a reason I kept you around.”

Michael simply rolled his eyes, thankful he had managed to quieten Kyle down for a moment but he had no doubt that he would find something else to moan about soon enough. Before he returned his attention to his own breakfast he noticed Isabel come in through the far door, look around and finally head towards where they sat in a secluded corner.

“Hey.” Michael called in greeting as he watched Isabel approach from over Kyle’s shoulder.

“Hey.” She replied, stopping to look at what the two young men were eating. “You do know they won’t take it away from you until you are finished don’t you Kyle?” She asked to the young man who was so busy eating in a rush that he hadn’t even said hello.

“Have to eat it while it’s hot.” He managed to choke out, barely registering Isabel’s presence.

“Don’t ask.” Michael replied to the unspoken question Isabel had sent his way upon hearing Kyle’s comment.

Isabel returned her icy stare to Kyle who was still ignoring her. “Are you going to let me sit down?” She finally asked.

Kyle eventually lifted his gaze to meet Isabel’s. “I think you’ll find there are two sides to every booth. Why can’t you sit next to him?” Kyle nodded towards Michael on the opposite side.

Isabel sighed heavily. “First of all he’s bigger than you are so there’s less room. Then there’s the fact that I would rather sit with my back to the door as otherwise I get paranoid about the different people who keep coming in. Finally, if I sit beside you it means I won’t have to look at you while you wolf down your food. It’s enough to turn anyone’s stomach.”

“He does the same.” Kyle spoke with his mouth full while pointing at Michael with his fork.

Isabel looked at Michael. “That’s true…” She conceded. “…but after all these years I am used to it with Michael. I don’t have time to go through it all again with you, now move!” Isabel’s resolve was being sorely tested and when Kyle didn’t move after her last instruction she was no longer in no mood to play. She purposefully leaned down towards Kyle and whispered sternly into his ear. “Max wants us to stick together otherwise I would sit elsewhere. I’ve had a bad few weeks and I haven’t had the best of nights. Don’t make me hurt you!”

The last part of her speech stopped Kyle in his tracks. He slowly turned his head to look at Isabel and the cold, hard stare that met him told him he was pushing his luck too far. Without another word he slid over into the corner, dragging his plate and cutlery with him. “Thank you.” Isabel stated once she sat down.

The three sat in silence for awhile. Isabel gave an order to the waitress for just coffee and toast and by the time it had turned up they had all settled into a rather uncomfortable silence. Isabel realised that her comments to Kyle didn’t exactly make for a conducive atmosphere but she knew there was more to this silence than her abrupt entrance.

“I take it they told you.” She began.

Michael and Kyle barely raised their heads but Isabel did notice them swap a subtle glance. Finally Michael sat upright from where he had been hunched over his food. “It’s not like we have been talking behind your back.” He said tensely. “We’ve all been aware that something has been going on with you for weeks now and we were just a little concerned.”

“All of us.” Kyle reaffirmed before dropping his gaze again.

Isabel smiled slightly, determined to be as encouraging as possible despite the slightly embarrassing subject. “Have I really been that difficult to be around?”

“Not at all.” Kyle shook his head. “But it has been apparent that something was wrong with you but none of us knew what to do so we just stayed vigilant and quiet.”

“I appreciate the concern.” She smiled from one boy to the other. “I bet you didn’t think the root of my problems was a mad notion that Alex was still alive though did you?”

Now both young men turned to look at her, stern faced. “Isabel, with our background its strange when something normal happens not something abnormal.” Michael stated resolutely. “We would never judge you on what you felt or what you thought you felt. Losing Alex was the hardest thing any of us has had to go through, it affected all of us but none more than you. That’s why you’ll not find any of us judging you on what you are going through now or how you deem to cope with those feelings.”

“Michael’s right.” Kyle immediately agreed. “God only knows what is going on in that little green head of yours but we’re in this together so if you say you felt something or you thought there was something there than we believe you. Alex was an important part of this group and more than that he was an important part of all our lives. What you feel is what you feel and there’s nothing else to say on the matter. Until we have proof to the contrary nothing, no matter how remarkable, is going to be discounted.”

Isabel was fighting back tears, she didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know what she had been expecting from the two boys once they found out what had been troubling her but if she was asked she would have to admit that unconditional support wouldn’t have been high on her list of possibilities.

“Thanks.” She smiled at one boy and then the other. “Anyway, I tried last night and now I am convinced I was wrong, there’s nothing out there. I’ve no doubt that most of what I was feeling was coming from inside of me but I promised myself one last try and I did but it was just the black void again.”

“And this is the same thing you have been experiencing over the last few weeks?” Kyle questioned.

Isabel simply nodded. “Obviously it is weirder than ever for someone like me because the dream world is where I am normally in complete control but that hasn’t been the case over recent weeks. I don’t know what or where this void is but I seem to be drawn to it. I don’t consciously go looking for it, it seems to come looking for me.”

“In that case we need to be very careful and make sure you aren’t left alone.” Michael stated defensively. “You’re our queen of the dream, if you pardon the pun, but if someone or something is strong enough to be directing you on the dream plain maybe we have a new enemy to worry about, someone with powers like ours.” He added the last part in a hushed tone.

“You might be right but I hope not.” Isabel conceded. “The only thing I can say is that as it is only ever a black void I might not be getting anything from them but it means they’re not getting anything from me. I think it is only if that changes that we will have something to worry about.”

It didn’t surprise Peter Ellington to find Eve sitting next to Adam’s bed when he arrived on the ward. It was still forty minutes before her shift was due to begin but he had a feeling she would already be there. He felt it was a mini triumph getting her to go home when she did. What he hadn’t told her was that he had already prepared a backup plan which was to offer for her to sleep at the hospital but thankfully it hadn’t come to that.

“I hope you got at least some sleep.” He teased as he looked at Adam’s chart.

“Actually I got lots, which surprised even me.” She confessed. “I think I subconsciously knew that if I wasn’t up to the task of doing my job this evening you would send me home so my brain must have decided that it would be best if I got as much rest as possible.”

“Well I am glad to hear it.” He smiled. “And I hope you keep hold of that thought because that is exactly what I will do if I feel you are getting too involved or that you are letting your work suffer. You have other patients to tend to don’t forget.”

“I won’t.” She nodded before turning her attention back to their patient at hand. “So I didn’t hear anything from anyone today so I take it there was no change in his condition.” She was talking more to herself with her last comment.

“His brain wave patterns have changed to something approaching normal but you knew that this morning.” Doctor Ellington began. “His heart and lungs are working as well as they have been so there has been no change there but then again we wouldn’t have expected any.”

“I take it he hasn’t spoken yet.” She asked the question but she already knew the answer.

Peter simply shook his head slowly. “He’s opened his eyes a few times and even managed to follow people as they have walked around the room but that isn’t any real indication of progress as people who are still in deep comas are capable of that.”

“If that’s the case, what got everyone so excited this morning?” She asked, frustration evident in her voice.

“It was a combination of things.” Peter began. “Sarah said he opened his eyes, which we have said has happened before, but that coupled with a change in both his breathing and brainwave patterns set everyone’s pulse racing. We also noticed what appeared to be eye movement behind his eyelids that was over and above what we have seen before.”

“Dreaming?” Eve raised her eyebrows in an expression of surprise.

“We’re not sure.” He admitted. “It could have been R.E.M. but it’s not something we have seen before from Adam so it was taken as another sign that things had changed. Whether or not he was dreaming is yet to be proven.”

Suddenly Adam started to cough violently as though choking. In an instant both Eve and Peter were at his side as they lifted the top end of the bed into a more lofted position while they attempted to sort out his coughing fit.

Eve took a step back in shock when she saw his eyes flash open and for the first time she witnessed Adam look directly at her and it was then that she saw it. In that instant she knew he was in there, that she had made a connection. She hurriedly grabbed a cup of water with ice chips that sat beside the bed and lifted it to his lips as she supported his head with her free hand. She quickly exchanged a look of amazement with Peter when their previously still patient began to show signs of life.

“NURSE!” Peter Ellington cried at the top of his voice. “NURSE! Can we have a little help in here?”

Eve then became oblivious to everything and anything around her. She was simply lost in the eyes that not only remained fixed on her as she looked at Adam but they clearly registered that she was there. It had only taken a moment for Eve to feel lost in the warm, loving eyes that now looked back at her. She could already tell Adam was everything she knew he would be.

As she watched the small ward begin to fill up with other nurses and doctors she never left Adam’s side. She mopped at his brow with a cold, damp cloth and fed him ice chips from time to time. In a brief moment when she hadn’t been looking directly at him she felt a hand grab at the lapel of her uniform. She didn’t know what she was more shocked by…the fact that Adam had made a grab for her or how strong he seemed to be as he pulled her towards him.

“Where am I?” He managed to gasp out, his voice barely strong enough to register.

Eve lifted her gaze to be met by a look of sheer amazement from Peter who was standing on the other side of the bed. She found she was frozen in place until a nod from Peter towards Adam reminded her that she had just been asked a question.

Gathering her thoughts she looked back at the young man who was currently clinging to her as though his life depended on it. “You’re in the medical centre at Santa Fe. You had an accident and you’ve been unconscious. Can you tell me your name or where you come from?”

Both doctor and nurse stood and held their breath as they waited for any indication from Adam if he could understand what was being asked of him. Finally, slowly he shook his head. He squinted hard as though the act of trying to think of who he was made his head hurt. “I’m sorry, I can’t remember.”

“That’s fine.” Peter stated, drawing Adam’s attention to him. “We’re going to run some tests on you and I know you have a million and one questions, just as we do, but try to rest now. We’ll talk to you once you have gathered your strength but for now please try and rest.”

Peter and Eve moved to the end of the bed out of earshot of Adam. “I can’t believe this!” Peter stated honestly. “Do you know what the odds were for this young man to not only wake up after a year in a coma but to be able to speak and display normal brain function?”

“But he doesn’t seem to know who or where he is!” Eve was clearly worried. “Is it something we should be concerned about?”

“Eve, as difficult as this is to take in Adam has already hit the jackpot by waking up and being able to talk. He’s even managed to move his arm and hand so we know he has some motor function, which again is something to be extremely thankful for.” Peter explained. “Under any other circumstances I would say he has already ridden his luck but with what he has achieved so far it may simply be that he needs a day or two’s rest and his memory will return. Trust me when I tell you that even if it doesn’t he is still one of the luckiest men I have ever come across.”

“Eve!” A voice called

Eve and Peter turned around to find Sarah beside Adam’s bed. “I think he wants you.” Sarah nodded towards Adam who appeared to be trying to sit up.

“Wait, Wait!” Eve called as she moved back to his side and pushed him gently back into the pillows he was now leaning against. “I know you want to get up and go dancing but we need you to take your time, you’ve been through a tough time and you need to take it easy.”

Adam allowed himself to sink back into the pillows but he remained looking at Eve. “I think I remember my name.” He whispered softly.

“That’s fantastic!” Eve enthused.

He smiled weakly at his attentive nurse, pleased his small bit of news had cheered her so. He leaned forward slightly on his bed and cleared his throat. “I think my name is Evans.”

Chapter 3

Isabel opened the motel room door and stepped inside. As soon as she had taken a few more strides into the room she dropped her bag onto the bed before turning and plopping herself down beside it. For the last five days she had been making every effort to try and snap herself out of the doldrums she had been stuck in over recent weeks and months but it seemed she hadn’t been very successful, as of yet, if her current dour mood was anything to go by.

Since leaving Roswell she had felt her desire to return grow stronger and stronger. Of course she had a natural longing to return, not least to see her parents but it had been more than that, much more. It had been the main reason why she had come up with her outlandish idea that Alex may still have been alive, the connection that seemed to be pulling her back. She had given it days upon days of thought before she finally reached her bizarre conclusion, as unlikely as it was, but she couldn’t come up with any other explanation.

She had loved Jesse, really she had, but not the way she loved Alex. She had never formed a connection in the way that she and Alex had and despite the fact that in many ways she had been more intimate with Jesse, including the most intimate act of all, she still knew that she had never let Jesse in the way she had Alex, Jesse simply didn’t know her half as well as Alex ever did.

With Alex being the only person she had ever felt a connection with it was a reasonable assumption that it was Alex calling her back. Or at least it would have been if Alex hadn’t been killed in a car crash the year before.

Isabel suddenly started to fight back tears. She was determined not to let things get away from her again, not least for the fact that it would mean she had wasted a good five days of hard work and effort. As she rummaged around in her bag looking for a tissue she heard footsteps approaching the open door. Glancing up she saw Maria standing in the doorway with the towering figure of Michael standing just behind her, clearly carrying her bag.

In one swift movement Maria spun around, grabbing her bag from Michael. “Thanks, Michael. I need a shower after all that driving so I’ll catch up with you and the others later for dinner.”

As Maria stepped back, into the room, Michael was noticeably concerned about Isabel. “What about Isabel? I just want to check…”

That was the last thing either girl heard as Maria closed the door. It was enormously rude of Maria to do what she did and she knew it but she was also abundantly aware that Isabel was in tears on the bed and she wanted to shield her friend from any undue intrusion, even to the detriment of Michael’s feelings. She was sure he would not only understand when she explained her actions to him later but also that she could think of a way to make it up to him.

Maria quickly pulled the curtains closed and turned on one of the side lamps that sat in between the twin beds. Having locked the door and covered the window she felt safe in the knowledge that Isabel was now free to let loose her emotions without the others witnessing such an event. Her last action was to sit beside her tall friend and wrap a loving arm around her shoulder, as far as her little arm would reach. She didn’t say anything, she didn’t have to. The friends just sat in silence as Maria gently rocked Isabel. The only sound was the distraught girl weeping quietly.

After a short while Isabel’s sobs began to die down, her tears slowed and she visibly straightened up as she regained her composure. Maria released her grip on her friend and hurried to the side where an empty jug and some glasses sat. She quickly grabbed the jug and went into the bathroom. A few seconds later she came out holding the same jug, which was now full of water.

“What would madam like to drink today?” She smiled lovingly at her friend. “It can be anything that madam desires, not least because it will be madam creating the desired beverage and therefore doing all of the work.”

Isabel managed to smile at her friends little show. “Actually, Maria. I really don’t mind so if you have a preference…” Isabel trailed off, waiting for a reply.

Maria shrugged. “It’s been a long, hot day in that sauna of a camper van so a nice lemonade might just hit the spot.”

“Lemonade it is.” Isabel smiled as she swiped her hand over the jug transforming the contents from plain water to refreshing lemonade. Maria quickly poured them both a glass and handed one to her friend before she sat down on her bed opposite.

“Are you OK, Honey?” She finally asked. “I know you have been trying to remain upbeat but you really don’t have to hide how you feel just to stop us being concerned about you. We’re supposed to be looking out for you not the other way round.” She smiled comfortingly at her companion.

Isabel simply sat staring at the glass she held in her hand. Maria had made a good choice with her preference for lemonade. It was truly refreshing as Maria had intended and it made a change from all the cherry coke she had been drinking lately.

Maria suddenly leapt from her position on the bed and darted towards her bag. “I’m sorry, Isabel, I nearly forgot.”

Isabel watched wide-eyed as Maria rummaged through her bag before turning around, triumphantly holding a small bottle of Tabasco sauce. “I always try to keep a bottle handy in case you guys need it but it completely went out of my mind when I got your drink. Sorry.” She added at the end as she poured a couple of healthy drops into Isabel’s glass.

Isabel quickly took a sip out of politeness, thankful for both her friend’s efforts and thoughtfulness for what she had done but she couldn’t deny the kick the Tabasco gave her drink with the mixture of sweet and spicy was very welcome, making it an even more refreshing treat than just the lemonade on its own.

“It isn’t just a case of me trying to hide how I am truly feeling to make you guys feel better or to stop you from worrying about me.” Isabel began. “I really thought I had achieved some kind of closure when I tried and failed to connect to Alex last week. I thought I had finally laid all my ghosts to rest but it seems it wasn’t that simple.”

“You’re not having those dreams again, are you?” Maria asked in a rush, concern apparent in her voice. “I thought you said they had disappeared.”

“They did, I mean they have.” Isabel corrected herself. “It just freaked me out somewhat that they stopped as suddenly as they started. I can’t help wondering not only what caused them but if they will come back.” Isabel sighed heavily. “I spoke to Michael and Kyle about it last week and it didn’t take Michael long before he was worried about it being a new enemy that had surfaced. Of course he is right to worry and I know he is only looking out for all of our safety but it didn’t exactly make for uninterrupted sleeping over the last few nights. I’m worried that not only are they monitoring me through my dreams but that they might be using me to track us. God only knows if the doors to our rooms are going to get kicked in during the middle of the night and we are all either killed in our sleep or carted off for experimentation.”

Maria swallowed hard and slowly looked towards the locked door, wide-eyed.

“I’m sorry, Maria.” Isabel quickly offered. “Now you know why I have been keeping things to myself recently. I know I am only being paranoid and I am sure none of that is going to happen but I can’t help but wonder.”

“So no untoward dreams?” Maria asked having finally cleared her mind of Isabel’s last comments.

“That’s just it!” Isabel exclaimed. “There’s nothing. For weeks, if not months, I’ve been feeling like there is something out there and then, after I tried to connect to Alex last week…nothing. For the last four or five nights since then not only am I not being pulled into the black void but I’m not feeling the connection that was there, where ever it was coming from.”

Maria frowned slightly, wishing Liz was here as she was always better at piecing together all the bits of the puzzles they always seemed to encounter. “Isn’t that a good thing?” She asked after a slight delay.

Isabel simply shrugged. “Who knows? No void I think is a good thing. No explanation I think might be a bad thing as it might come back.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Hello, Sleepy head.” Eve welcomed her waking patient back into the conscious world.

Adam scrubbed at his face with his hands as he slowly began to stir from his evening nap. “Considering I’ve been in a coma for the last year or so I must admit I was hoping to be doing a little less sleeping and a little more waking but that doesn’t appear to be the case.”

“Don’t let that get you down, Adam.” Eve tried to reassure her new friend. “You’ve been through so much over the last year we knew it was going to be a slow process, getting you back on your feet.”

“Speaking of getting back on my feet...”

“Hold it right there.” Eve cut in. “It’s only been five days since you have recovered enough from your trauma to wake up so I, and more importantly the doctors, feel you are making incredible progress but let’s not run before we can walk.”

“That’s what I am trying to tell you.” Adam insisted. “You haven’t been about for the last few days, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed.” He joked. “And I’ve been able to start walking, thanks to you in no small part.” He added.

“Me?” Eve asked incredulously. “Whatever has it got to do with me?”

Adam smiled broadly. “After you abandoned me my friend Sarah has been looking after me.”

Eve eyed her young patient suspiciously. “You mean my friend Sarah!”

“Not anymore.” He shook his head. “She’s been telling me all sorts of tales about you but that’s for another time.” Adam winked at Eve. “She also told me that I have you to thank for my physical condition because of all the hard work you have been doing with me. Namely all the arm and leg exercises you have been doing while I have been unconscious. Trying to prevent atrophied.”

“Atrophied?” Eve arched her eye-brows in surprise.

“You know what it means.” Adam smiled. “If it wasn’t for your hard work I would have wasted away in this bed but with all your efforts I’m already able to stand and even walk, as long as it is only a short distance.”

“You can?” Eve looked surprised again. “That’s wonderful. I’m very pleased for you but you have to make sure you don’t over do it.”

“I won’t.” Adam agreed. “So, speaking of being abandoned.” He said suddenly.

Eve frowned. “Were we?”

“Anyway, getting back to me.” He said, moving the subject along. “Where have you been for the last few days?”

Eve sighed at Adam as she looked at him over the chart she was perusing. “I didn’t abandon you. My shift rota had me off for a few days and they wouldn’t let me change it. I offered to come in on my own time but I was told I couldn’t, I wouldn’t have been covered by insurance.”

“So you wanted to work on your own time to look after me? That’s very sweet.” Adam said mockingly. Suddenly his handsome features took on a more mischievous appearance. “Or maybe it was someone else you were hoping to see?”

Eve shot Adam a look and she soon realised that not only was he messing with her but he was also no longer looking at her since he made that last comment. She turned to follow his gaze and blushed furiously when she realised he was looking at and talking about Peter Ellington, who, it seemed, was heading their way.

“Why on earth would you think that?” She asked in a rush as she fought back the urge to bolt.

Adam smiled. “One word, Sarah!”

“She is so dead when I see her.” Eve stated firmly.

“You can’t just blame Sarah.” Adam instructed as he continued to watch the approaching doctor. “I’ve been in a coma for over a year and even I can see how you are around him. You’d make a great couple.”

“Who’d make a great couple?” Peter Ellington asked as he entered the room, a welcoming smile on his face.

“Ross and Rachel.” Adam replied, not missing a beat. “Nurse Sarah was telling me what has been going on in certain TV shows while I have been unconscious and I was just saying to Eve that I hoped Ross and Rachel end up together as I think they make an ideal couple.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” Peter smiled before turning his attention from Adam to Eve. “Hello, Eve. How were your days off, did you go away anywhere or did you just stay at home?”

Eve barely lifted her gaze from the chart she was still holding. She could feel her skin still burning and she knew if she looked directly at Adam or Peter she would lose it completely, her mortification would be absolute. “I just caught up on some washing and shopping, nothing special.”

“Well I’m glad you’re back.” Peter admitted. “You’re the number one nurse around here and the place runs a lot smoother with you here. But don’t tell Sarah I said that.” He joked.

“Doctor, while you are here can I ask you a question?” Adam asked tentatively.

“Of course, anything you want, Adam.” Peter moved to beside the bed and took hold of Adam’s wrist as he checked his pulse. “Have you remembered anything else, is that why you want to talk to me?”

Adam shook his head mournfully. “The nurses told me the police have no record of anyone called Evans that matches my description going missing just over a year ago. Ironically I did get told of a report that a guy named Evans who was not too dissimilar to me was reported missing a few months ago from Roswell but he’s about eleven or twelve months too late to be me.” He laughed ruefully, hiding his disappointment.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Peter said solemnly as he took the chart from Eve, who had finally managed to recompose herself after Adam’s comments. “What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

Adam sighed. “It’s just I don’t seem to do anything but sleep. I never seem to have enough energy and no matter what time of day or night it is I feel like sleeping. Don’t even get me started on the nights, I simply pass out until the morning, I’m dead to the world.”

“Really?” Peter was clearly thinking about something before he quickly flicked through Adam’s chart. “Yes, here it is. You’re been prescribed a heavy sedative to help you sleep.”

“Help me sleep?” Adam echoed the doctor’s words. “I haven’t had trouble sleeping.”

Peter placed Adam’s chart on the table. “Sorry, I’m not explaining myself very well. You’ve been through a lot in the last year or so and I know it might seem odd but we need to make sure you get plenty of rest, specifically a good night’s sleep. There is nothing more beneficial for you at this point in time than lots of bed rest. We’ve seen patients who have come out of coma’s become agitated and find it difficult to sleep as they try to readjust and come to terms with what has happened to them. Your brain has almost been idle for a year or more so the sudden influx of information and activity can lead to problems. I’m sorry if you find it distressing but we have had good results with this method of recovery before. I promise you the sedatives are doing no long term damage. The only thing that is happening to you is you are slowly regaining your strength. As you’ve described you’re dead to the world. I believe patients don’t even get the opportunity to dream they are so heavily sedated. The drugs take you right past REM sleep and straight into a deep slumber but the good news is that despite the lack of dreams it is where all your recuperating will take place.”

“How long do I have to take them?” Adam asked, concern for his wellbeing uppermost in his thoughts. “I’m being given so many tablets and medicines at the moment that I’m surprised I don’t rattle when I walk to the bathroom.”

Peter smiled at his patients little joke. “You were down to take the prescription for a week but if you are feeling at all concerned we can stop. All your reports say you are making excellent progress so I don’t think it should be a problem.” Peter turned to look at Eve. “That coupled with the hospitals number one nurse and you should be fine.”

Eve simply accepted the compliment graciously and was thankful she didn’t start blushing again. After the doctor had left she took a step forward and aimed a playful swipe at her smiling patient. “Do you see what you have done? I’m reading things into even the most innocuous of comments now, thanks to you and Sarah.”

Adam held up his hands in mock surrender. “Don’t shoot the messenger. I’ve only said what I can see and it is as plain as the nose on your face. You like him and he likes you. You should ask him out.”

Eve dropped her gaze. “He thinks I’m too young for him.”

Adam was surprised by that comment. “You’ve already asked him?”

Eve shook her head vigorously. “I just know by the way he talks to me, by the things he says.” She lifted her gaze to look at Adam. “I don’t mean he is condescending or anything like that. I just mean he calls me young lady and always makes a joke about how old he is.”

“How old are you?” Adam asked tentatively. “I know it is rude to ask but I am just curious…twenty-three, twenty-four?”

“Twenty-nine.” Eve said matter-of-factly. “I appreciate the compliment. I’ve often been told I look younger than I am, which is nice sometimes but a pain at other times.”

“How old is Peter, do you know?”

“Old father time?” Eve joked. “He’s forty-one but he says he is old before his time. I don’t believe that for a moment but he’s Mr Reliable around here so I think he likes to be thought of as some old, dependable guy.”

“There you go.” Adam enthused. “We all know women mature faster than men and that men are just kids at heart. There’s barely over ten years between you but maturity wise he’s coming down to you and you’re coming up to him.” Adam gave Eve a big smile. “It sounds like you are perfect for each other.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A few hours later Eve went in to check on Adam. She found him reading a Time magazine that had been brought in for him. “Are you reading again?” She asked as she busied herself around the room.

“I have a lot of catching up to do and the kind doctor’s and nurse’s around here keep bring me in old newspapers and magazines so I can fill in the gaps.” Adam explained.

Suddenly Eve’s beautiful features creased in thought. “Have you thought about what you will do if your memory doesn’t return?”

Adam dropped the magazine he had been holding onto the bed beside him. “Not really. I don’t know who I am so I don’t know what I am missing. I think things would be worse if I knew I was missing a family or friends…”

“Maybe even a girlfriend?” Eve offered gently.

Adam paused for a moment. “I was about to say yes but I don’t think so. The thought of what she might have gone through losing me and not knowing what has happened to me, I hope I was single with no family and no friends. That way no one suffered.”

Eve’s heart went out to the young man that lay in the hospital bed. She slowly lowered the back of his bed, readying it for the sleep she so hoped her patient would soon be enjoying. She turned down the lights until just a dim bedside light lit the area around the bed. “Goodnight Adam, I hope you have sweet dreams.”

Adam smiled at the departing nurse. “Now wouldn’t that me nice.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Are you all set for bed?” Maria asked gently.

“I am,” Isabel nodded. “Thanks to you.” She added.

“Me?” Maria pointed to herself. “I’m not sure what I did.”

“How about looking after me when I suffered a mini-meltdown late this afternoon or how you took the time to explain to everyone that I was fine and there was nothing to worry about. Thanks to you I didn’t have to spend the entire evening fending off questions about how I am.” Isabel smiled ruefully. “I know people are genuinely concerned about me and I really do appreciate it but I don’t know the answers to their questions anymore than they do so it can be frustrating receiving all the questions I keep getting.”

Maria climbed into bed and turned to look at her friend. “I’m sure a good night’s sleep will do you the world of good.”

“I hope so.” Isabel agreed as she turned off the bedside light, plunging them into darkness. “I could do with the lift.”

Within a very short space of time Isabel was sound asleep. Almost immediately she knew things were different from recent nights. Firstly she felt different, which was an improvement in itself after the way she had been feeling lately. For the first time in almost a week she felt a calmness and serenity that she had sorely missed. Then, unmistakeably, she could feel it. The connection, for want of a better word, was back but this time it was many times stronger. It had a familiar feel that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. However, the one thing she felt sure about despite its unknown origins was that it wasn’t necessarily a bad feeling.

It didn’t take her long before she found she was back on the dream plain and almost immediately she felt the presence of something that turned her blood cold. The dream that had manifested itself as the black void was back and it was approaching fast. Her initial thought was to leave, to bring herself back to consciousness but she soon realised that it had done her no harm before so she had no reason to believe it would do her any harm now.

Within seconds she was enveloped by the dream but it immediately made her jump back. Gone was the black void and complete nothingness she had encountered before and it had been replaced by a long, dimly lit corridor. Isabel tentatively took her first steps forward. She knew she couldn’t be seen in the dream unless she willed it to happen but this was the dream that had previously been the black void after all, of that she had no doubt. That meant she was going to be extra careful.

Despite her anonymity she moved cautiously along the hallway, prepared to wrench herself from the dream at the first sign of alarm. She frowned to herself as this area appeared to be very quiet. She had already picked up that she was in a hospital of some sort having seen several signs and various pieces of equipment.

After awhile the hallway appeared to be leading to a work area. The pathway led to a small room off to the side. She could already tell it was much smaller than the empty wards that she had past on the walk down even though they hadn’t been too big to begin with. Finally, she could see a bed with several monitors on the far side of the glass partition. She didn’t know why but she could feel herself being pulled towards the room.

She eventually made it to the doorway of the ward. She wasn’t sure if her reticence was down to her not knowing where she was or what she might find in an unknown hospital bed but she couldn’t stop, she couldn’t turn back. She had come too far to do that.

With her last step forward she stopped in horror, throwing a hand to her mouth to stop the cry of anguish that threatened to escape. The last thing she saw before her eyes became too blurred to see due to the floods of tears that followed was the sight of Alex lying in the hospital bed. It wasn’t only the sight of Alex that caused her to be overcome with emotion but the sound of his heart monitor registering his steady, even heartbeat. He was alive!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Adam…Adam, wake up, please!”

Adam lurched forward on his bed into a sitting position. His sudden leap forward nearly sent Eve crashing backwards onto the floor as she had been leaning over him at the time. She steadied herself before she returned her attention to the confused young man. “Adam, are you alright?”

Adam reached up and ran the back of his hand across his forehead. When he dropped his hand he could see beads of sweat which only confirmed his breathless and agitated state. “I think I’m OK.” He said gasping to catch his breath. “I think I must have had a dream or something but I can’t quite remember.”

“I think you did as well.” Eve confirmed. “You were calling out in your sleep. Can you remember anything at all?”

Adam’s face creased, deep in thought before he shook his head slowly. “I can’t remember anything. I’m sorry.” He looked at Eve with a solemn look etched on his face. “You said I called out, what did I say?”

Eve eyed him for a moment before she asked. “Adam, who is Isabel?”

Chapter 4

Michael nearly took the door off of its hinges as he came crashing into the girl’s room. He had heard the unmistakeable sound of Isabel crying out in anguish which meant he was automatically up, out of bed and striding towards the room next door to his before he was fully aware of what was happening. Motel room walls were not famed for their abilities to soundproof so the very instant the cry left Isabel’s lips he was instinctively alert and in motion. Since they had left Roswell he had been mentally preparing himself for any unforeseen events and this was undoubtedly something out of the unforeseen category.

It was all he could do to wait the few seconds it took for his powers to unlock the locked door that blocked his path before he came slamming into the room. He stared, wide-eyed, as he took in the sight of Maria cradling Isabel in her arms as the much taller blond cried out about something he couldn’t make sense of. Before he had a chance to speak he felt Kyle come crashing into the back of him. So intent was Kyle to get involved in the action that he wasn’t going to let the large frame of his friend, that currently filled the doorway, stop him.

With a growl of annoyance Michael stepped to one side to allow Kyle to enter the room and take in the scene that was unfolding. A few brief seconds later Liz rushed into the room, beyond the two waiting boys and straight to Isabel’s side. Finally Max appeared. It was clear he had taken in their surroundings in an instant and finding both Michael and Kyle simply standing either side of the doorway told him they weren’t under any kind of attack. As he allowed his racing heart to slow he could see the cause of everyone’s alarm, Isabel remained wrapped in Maria’s loving arms as both Liz and Maria spoke quiet but no doubt soothing words to their distraught friend.

Michael quickly stepped outside and took a look around. Despite the loud cry that caught all of their attention he wasn’t completely surprised that none of the other residents in the rundown motel appeared to have taken any notice. Sadly, a one-off scream would probably be ignored unless it went on to disturb someone’s sleep or their late night TV watching.

Happy that this was going to remain amongst the close-knit group Michael stepped back inside and pushed the door closed. With a silent nod to Max and Kyle the three young men visibly relaxed and turned their complete attention to the three women that sat on the one bed.

“Isabel, Sweetie. You need to calm down. I know whatever you saw has upset you but it was only a dream.” Maria spoke softly to her friend as she rocked her ever-so-gently. “We’re all here for you and everything is fine, you’re safe here so just take deep breaths and try to calm yourself down.”

It was becoming apparent to the three boys that Isabel had actually been trying to speak but she was so visibly upset by whatever had happened that she couldn’t bring herself to talk properly.

Liz lifted herself from the bed and moved to the side. She found a jug and some glasses but the jug was half full of something that clearly wasn’t water. Pouring a glass of what seemed to be lemonade Liz swiped her hand over it and instantly turned it into a glass of ice cold water. “Here, Isabel.” Liz returned to the bed and offered the glass to her friend, who was noticeably calming down. “Take a few sips of this, it might help.”

It was very apparent that everyone was concerned for Isabel’s wellbeing but it was also clear that the girl’s were in full control and that Isabel seemed to be returning to her normal state. Max knew he wanted to protect his sister from anything, even if it was on the dream plain, but he also knew that they were now part of an extended family, all of whom wanted to help. He wasn’t surprised to find both Michael and Kyle first in the door, ready for anything. Nor did it surprise him to find his wife and her best friend tending to his distressed sister’s every need, doing all that they could for their friend.

Suddenly Isabel wriggled free from her friends grasp and leapt up from the bed. “I need to get my things.” She stated breathlessly. “I need to get going…”

For the first time Max stepped forward, catching Isabel in his arms and bringing his manic sister to a stop. “Isabel, you need to slow down. I don’t know what happened in your dream but you are safe now. We are all here to look after you and we won’t let anyone hurt you.”

Isabel shook her head vigorously. “No, you don’t understand, Max. I need to go to him and I need to go now, I can’t wait.”

Max actually thought he felt his heart break. His sister hadn’t said much but she had said enough. Enough for him and the others to understand what was happening. It was now clear that Isabel had had another dream about Alex but this time she was acting out her delusions.

“Isabel…Isabel, listen to me.” Max tried to speak slowly and calmly but his distraught sister had started to struggle slightly in his light grip. “Isabel, Alex is dead! I don’t know of any other way to say it to you but you seem to be losing your grip on what is real and what is not. I can only imagine the pain you have gone through losing him. We all lost one of our closest friends the day that he died but Isabel, you have to understand that he did die!”

“That’s just it!” Isabel exclaimed as she finally broke free from her brother and stepped back. “He’s not dead and I need to go to him!”

“Go to him.” Liz repeated softly. “Go where, Isabel?”

Isabel spun around to look at Liz, a smile of hope played on her lips. “Liz, he’s in Santa Fe. I saw the signs while I was dreamwalking him. I didn’t go looking for him, he came looking for me.” Isabel stepped forward and clasped Liz’s hands in hers. “He was the one sending the black void, Liz. He’s been reaching out to me for months but I never realised it until now!”

“Isabel,” Max called, drawing his sister’s attention back to him. “You can’t expect us to go back to Santa Fe to check out this wild claim of yours. We’ve been deliberately moving further and further away from that area, you know they will still be looking for us and you want us to go back?”

From the change of tone in Isabel’s voice it became clear that she was fast running out of patience. “I haven’t, at any stage, asked for you to go back with me.” She stated firmly. “I know he is alive, Max, and I’m going back for him no matter what. I’m sure once I have found him we can catch up with you in a few days.”

Isabel was surprised when she felt someone touch her shoulder. She turned to see the petite frame of Liz standing beside her, a look of compassion on her beautiful face. “Why don’t we take a minute and sit down…” Liz could see Isabel was about to speak but she kept going. “…I know you have a million and one things to do but it might help if you tell us what happened.”

Isabel eyed her sister-in-law for a moment before she smiled slightly and nodded before she turned to the others. “I’m sorry. I’ve just realised how manic I must appear as you guys don’t know what I saw so of course you would think I am losing my mind.” She let out a small chuckle as she sat down on the bed in between Maria and Liz.

Max had never been so pleased for his wife’s caring and thoughtful manner than he was now. The logical side of her brain had realised that they needed to stop Isabel so she could see what she was saying and doing but also her loving and caring side wanted nothing more than to understand what was going on with her friend and to know what she was going through and why.

“Maria and I went to bed as we have done so on countless occasions over recent months.” Isabel suddenly began. “Almost immediately I knew things were different tonight. I felt different, better somehow and I could also feel a familiar presence that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Then when I went onto the dream plain I immediately felt the return of the dream that had been manifesting itself as the black void.”

Isabel suddenly lifted her gaze and looked from Michael to Max, anguish apparent on her normally striking features. “My first thought was to wake myself up and keep away from the black void but I realised that it had done me no harm before so maybe I could stay and investigate. When I was enveloped by the dream I was surprised to find that it no longer contained a black void but a long corridor. I don’t know why but I was sure I was being led to a specific destination so I simply followed my connection to wherever it was leading me.”

“Connection?” Liz cut in. “Are you saying that word as a general term or are you actually saying that you felt connected to whatever or whoever was guiding you?”

“That’s my point.” Isabel enthused. “I wasn’t sure what it was at the time I just knew it was drawing me towards it but with the benefit of hindsight I know it was a connection, as in alien connection.” Isabel turned back to the others. “Finally I reached a small room. I could see through the glass partition that there was a bed with someone in it and all I could hear was the sound of the heart monitor registering a beat. When I eventually built up the courage to go in…” Isabel stopped a moment to catch her breath as her heart was pounding in her chest. “…I saw Alex lying in the bed. He looked so handsome and so peaceful I could barely see him as I started to cry.”

“What caused you to call out?” Kyle asked tentatively.

“I wasn’t conscious of the fact that I had moved so near to the bed. I was so busy trying to rid myself of the tears that were flooding down my face that I didn’t see him reach out to me.” Isabel explained.

“Reach out to you?” Liz queried. She knew who Isabel was referring to but she needed to hear it from her directly.

“Alex.” Isabel stated matter-of-factly. “He reached up and took my hand and I screamed in fright. I remember taking a couple of steps backwards in shock and he started to call out to me.” Isabel suddenly looked rueful. “That was the last thing I remember before waking up here and scaring Maria nearly half to death.”

The room finally fell silent. It was apparent that everyone had been upset by Isabel’s account of what had happened to her, not least Maria and Liz. Alex was one of the things that united the group in life and now he united them in death. The grief of his loss was never far from the surface when it came to any of the girl’s.

Max slowly moved over to Maria’s bed and sat down opposite the three girls and his sister in particular. “Isabel, what makes you think this is real and not just a dream? You’ve already told us that after Alex died he used to visit you. Maybe this was another one of those occasions?”

Isabel smiled softly to her brother, fully aware that he wasn’t trying to be condescending but he clearly thought she was crazy and couldn’t hide the fact that she probably needed to be fitted for a straight-jacket. “Max, I’m fully aware of how mad I must appear and that you have all been very patient with me but I know what I saw and that is that Alex is alive in a hospital in Santa Fe. I would never wish to put you or any of the others through this if I didn’t know it was real nor would I ever want to put you in danger so I don’t expect you to go back with me but be sure of one thing…I am going back.”

Max dropped his head and let out an elongated sigh. He would never normally doubt his sister when it came to matters on the dream plain but how was he meant to believe that a friend, who he had tried and failed to save, somehow mysteriously appeared in a New Mexico hospital nearly a year and a half after he witnessed his dead body? He couldn’t! “How do you explain the time delay in between when we lost Alex and his recent contact?” Max wasn’t trying to be cruel but he needed to make Isabel see sense. He needed to make her understand how outlandish her ideas were before it did irreparable damage to both herself and the group.

“It could be medical related.” Everyone turned in surprise to look at Liz who had answered on behalf of Isabel. She turned to her husband, keen for him to understand she didn’t doubt his intentions but she was as eager as anyone to get to the bottom of what was going on. “I mean it’s just too much of a coincidence that when Isabel makes contact with Alex, if it was Alex, that she finds him in a hospital bed. A hospital bed that is relatively close to Roswell. He could have been in a serious accident, a coma or who knows what? There are dozens of things that could have put him out of action for over a year.”

“I know how it sounds, Max.” Isabel cut in. “And if I were in your position I would be thinking the same things as you but I’m telling you he’s alive, Max.” Isabel slid off of the bed where she had been sitting and kneeled in front of her brother, resting her hands on his. Tears were starting to run down her cheeks. “I saw him, Max. I felt his touch. I could even smell him! Can you hear what I am saying? You know how it is for me in dreams, it’s real to me, as though I am there.”

Isabel stood up and turned to the others. “I stood in the same room as Alex. I saw him, I touched him and he spoke to me. With or without you I am going to get him and I’m going to get him now!”

“Hang on a minute, Isabel.” Liz stepped up from where she had been sitting on the bed. “I think I might have an idea.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Adam sat blinking.

“Adam…Adam, can you hear me?” Eve questioned softly.

Adam finally snapped out of his stupor and turned to look at Eve. “Isabel, you’re saying I called out the name Isabel?”

Eve nodded. “Several times. Do you have any idea who she is?”

Adam creased his face, deep in thought but eventually he shook his head slowly. “It seems to be familiar to me but nothing more than that. It could be my mother’s name, my sister’s name…”

“Your girlfriend’s name?” Eve cut in with a smile.

“You’re not going to let that one go, are you?” He stated with a smile.

“Well…you’re sort of good looking and not that annoying to be around.” She joked. “So there’s a good possibility that some girl could have managed to put up with you.”

“Thanks.” Adam offered sarcastically. “Remind me to chip in when they are looking for donations for your birthday present.”

Before Eve could reply to Adam’s banter a worried looking Peter Ellington arrived. “How are you Adam, everything OK?”

“He’s fine, Peter.” Eve answered on behalf of her patient. “It seems he had a vivid dream and it startled him somewhat.

“Vivid dream?” Adam frowned. “How do you know?”

“Just put it down to experience.” Eve laughed. “When a guy wakes up covered in sweat and calling out a girl’s name I think the least it is going to be is vivid.”

Adam flushed furiously. “No wait! It wasn’t that sort of dream.”

“I know.” Eve nodded. “I was only playing. The anxious look on your face when you woke up told me that.”

“How are you feeling now, Adam?” Peter asked as he checked his patient’s heartbeat with a stethoscope.

“Confused.” Adam admitted. “Eve was telling me I called out the name Isabel but I don’t know who or what Isabel is, other than a beautiful name.” He added absent-mindedly.

“Giiiirrrrl-friiiieeend.” Eve sang under her breath, just loud enough for Adam to hear.

“Peter, didn’t you tell me you like going to the cinema?” Adam asked, turning his attention to his doctor and choosing to ignore Eve’s little comment.

“Oh, I love the cinema.” Peter enthused. “I try to make a night of it whenever I go. A nice walk down to the complex near the river, a good film and then a nice meal, I always find it very relaxing.”

Adam now had a smug smile on his face as he turned to look at Eve. Eve, seeing that Peter was concentrating on filling out an update on Adam’s chart suddenly realised what Adam was up to and she silently mouthed the words “Don’t do it” to her meddlesome friend…but it was too late.

“That’s funny.” Adam continued. “Eve was only telling me the other day that she likes to do the same.”

Peter’s head snapped up to look at Eve. “Really?” He asked, sudden interest apparent in his voice.

Before Eve could reply they were interrupted by Sarah. “Hey guys, sorry to interrupt but we’ve just received a rather strange phone call.” Seeing that she had everyone’s attention she continued. “A girl was just put through to the ward. She was asking about a long term patient that we may or may not have here and she described Adam to the letter. When I told her I couldn’t give patients details out over the phone she simply asked if a young man had been brought in from the Roswell area over a year ago. I tried not to give any details but it was clear she was going to hang up so I said yes in case she had some sort of connection to Adam and she thanked me and said she would be back in touch.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Liz placed the receiver back on its cradle, stepped up from her bed and out onto the walk way. A few seconds later she was back in the girl’s room and looking mournfully at her friends, all of whom were simply staring at her in anticipation. She looked around at her friends before she settled on Isabel. “After getting the number from information I’ve just called the Santa Fe medical centre. They don’t normally take calls overnight but as I insisted that it was an emergency and explained I was chasing up a lead on a friend of mine who had been missing for over a year they checked their records before putting me through to the high dependency ward, which caused me to worry. The nurse I spoke to said they couldn’t give out any details on patients and to phone back during day time hours. When I pushed and told her I was looking for a friend who had been missing for nearly eighteen months I gave her a description of Alex and she said that they had someone brought in from the Roswell area over a year ago who matched the details I gave her.”

“That’s it, I’m leaving now!” Isabel exclaimed. “I told you he was there.”

“Isabel, there’s one more thing.” Liz cut in. “They said that when the young man was brought in he was in a coma.”

Chapter 5

Max sighed heavily as he rubbed at his forehead in a weary manner. ‘Why does it always have to be me?’ He mumbled to himself under his breath before he straightened up and looked at the others. “We can’t all go!” He exclaimed to the group who were bickering amongst themselves.

“Max, calm down.” Maria insisted. “There’s no need to get so uptight.”

“No need to get uptight?” Max repeated. “We’re on the run, trying to stay one step ahead of the FBI and God only knows who else and now you all want to go running back to New Mexico!”

“Well, you’re the one who started it by asking stupid questions.” Maria countered. “I mean what sort of question is ‘Who wants to go back?’. If there’s a chance that Alex is alive back in Santa Fe you can’t honestly believe that I’m going to wait here while someone else goes back.”

Max realised he was fighting a losing battle, which was just about to get worse by the look on his wife’s face. “I suppose it would be another stupid question if I asked you to stay here?” He proffered gently, already knowing the answer.

Liz nodded silently. She knew Max was only trying to look out for the safety of the group, as he always did, but if there was the slightest possibility that Alex was alive there was nothing on this earth that was going to stop any of the girl’s from returning. Isabel was going back, that wasn’t even open to discussion. The knock on effect meant that if Maria was going back, so was Michael. If Liz was going back, so was Max. That left Kyle who, despite not being attached to another member of group in the same way that each of the others were, still wanted to go back and get his friend.

Max slowly looked at each member of the group in turn. “Everyone please just sit down for a minute and listen to me. Once you have listened to what I have to say then we can all go charging back to Santa Fe like the charge of the light brigade, if that’s what you all want.”

Gradually those that hadn’t already been sitting down found a place to sit and turned their focus entirely to Max.

“Firstly, please don’t misinterpret my comments and actions. I truly want Alex back as much as the rest of you do but given the choice I would prefer to have him back while keeping the rest of us safe rather than rushing in without thinking things through first.” Max explained. “Secondly, I was hoping you all might understand what I am saying and realise that it actually makes much more sense just having one or two of us going back but I can see now that Alex means too much to all of us so waiting around for news is no longer an option. Finally, and this is the whole cause of my anxiety, as much as we want Alex back we need to prepare for the worst. That includes the possibility that it might not be Alex. And if it is, which I hope and pray it is, we need to think things through before we go charging in. Do you all understand what I am saying?”

Slowly everyone in the group started to nod in agreement with Max’s words. It was true to say that they were all getting a little carried away with the situation but in the cold light of day they all knew they couldn’t simply waltz back into Alex’s life as though nothing had happened over the last year and a half. Max was being the voice of reason, and not for the first time, so everyone’s enthusiasm needed to be held in check until they knew that it was definitely Alex at the medical centre in Santa Fe and that they could get him back where he belonged, namely with his friends who were now also his family.

Happy that he had everyone’s attention and that they understood his reluctance to go rushing back to New Mexico without thinking things through it was time to get things organised. “We can only go back if we are all willing to stick to the plan that we need to come up with.” Max turned his focus on the three girls. “If all that is going to happen is that the three of you are just going to go rushing up to Alex’s bed when we get there then we might as well forget it!”

“You have a problem with us wanting to see our missing friend after having thought we lost him eighteen months ago?” Maria asked in amazement.

“Not at all, Maria.” Max shook his head. “On the contrary, there will be no one happier to see Alex than me but what is the first thing that will happen if we go racing in without thinking things through?”

“Questions!” Liz stated purposefully.

“Exactly!” Max agreed. “They are going to want to know who we are and what we know about Alex.”

“What we know about Alex?” Kyle echoed, not understanding what Max was trying to say.

“This is my point.” Max affirmed. “Whoever spoke to Liz said Alex was brought to the medical centre in a coma. The fact that we buried Alex nearly eighteen months ago and, understandably, nothing has been heard of him since means they don’t know who he is due to his unconscious state. If they did they would have simply contacted his parents and we would have known about him still being alive while we were still in Roswell.”

“Oh my god!” Maria let slip. “I didn’t even think of that.”

“Not only can we not tell them who we are we can’t even tell them who Alex is!” Max continued.

“What do we do?” Isabel asked her brother softly. The realisation of how difficult this could be was beginning to dawn on all of them.

This time it was Max’s turn to come over to his sister and kneel in front of her, aping her actions of a few minutes earlier. “We can do this Iz, and it’s not going to be that difficult. All I’m trying to do now is to get things into prospective so we don’t go crashing into that hospital like headless chickens.”

Isabel reached out and covered her brother’s hand that had been resting on her knee. “OK, Max. We do it your way but two things…” Max nodded silently, awaiting his sister’s demands. “…we’re all going back and come what may, I get to go in and see him.”

Max smiled at his sister. “I think we can all live with that.”

The following evening Adam was sitting up in bed, staring at nothing in particular when Eve came in at the start of her shift. “Earth to Adam, come in Adam.”

Adam shook his head and broke out of his daydream. “Sorry, what?”

Eve let out a chuckle as she busied herself around the room. “I was just saying hello but you looked a little spaced out. Did you not get any more sleep last night after what happened?”

“I got some.” He nodded. “But it wasn’t exactly what you might call a peaceful sleep.”

“Nightmares?” Eve asked, her concern evident.

“Not nightmares.” Adam shook his head. “Just…” He trailed off. Eve could see he was deep in thought so she left him for a moment, not wishing to interrupt him for a second time. “Do you ever get the feeling that you’re not alone?” Adam suddenly asked.

Eve frowned. “What do you mean, like someone is spying on you?”

“Not exactly.” Adam grimaced while he tried to find the right words to describe what he was trying to say. “I’ve had this strange feeling all day, like something big is going to happen. Like I might finally be about to get some answers.”

Eve eyed him for a moment. “I know what that is.”

Adam looked up to see Eve nodding at him in understanding. “You do, what?”

“It was that phone call that Sarah took in the early hours of this morning.” Eve reasoned. “The possibility that someone you know might finally be about to get in touch probably has your brain working overtime. Your imagination is most likely running wild and your subconscious is coming up with all sorts of odd feelings and premonitions.” She surmised.

“You might be right.” Adam conceded. “But I think there is more to it than that. I can’t come up with the right words to describe what I mean. The nearest word that I can think of that covers it is that I feel a ‘connection’.”

“You feel a connection to someone or something?” Eve questioned.

“And it’s getting stronger!” Adam nodded. “I think that is why I am feeling like I am going to get some answers, I feel like I am going to have a visitor.”

“Now are you clear on what you have to do?” Max questioned, looking from Michael to Kyle and back again.

“I still don’t know why I can’t go in.” Maria moaned from the back, cutting in on Max.

“We’ve been through this.” Max groaned heavily. “Love you as we do you can’t be trusted to go in and take a look around before coming back out without going up to see Alex, if it is Alex in there. We’ve already talked about this. Michael and Kyle can go in, ask a few questions and have a look around without arousing too much suspicion. Once we have a better idea of what is going on then Isabel can go in.”

Maria went to speak again but Max held up a hand to stop her. “Maria, please just give this a chance. If you haven’t got the desired results in the next half an hour I’ll carry you in there myself, OK?”

“Fine!” Maria flopped back into her seat with her arms folded across her chest. “You have half an hour to bring me news about Alex before I go in myself.”

“Thank you.” Max stated firmly before looking at the rest of the group. “We’re just about to get either very good news or very bad, nothing in between. We have to prepare ourselves for both eventualities and deal with which ever one that comes our way.” Max looked to Michael and Kyle. “So you know what you are doing?”

“Find out where the high dependency ward is as that was where Liz was put through to on the phone.” Michael began before Kyle continued. “Don’t bring attention to ourselves. Try to find out if Alex really is in there and then get out as fast as possible.”

With a final look of understanding both boys climbed out of the camper van and walked slowly across the road to the entrance to the medical centre. They’d done too much travelling over the last few months but their situation meant it couldn’t be helped. The 600 miles they had cover in the last eighteen hours had been the longest and most uncomfortable leg of their journey as the minutes seemed to pass like hours and it felt like they would never get to Santa Fe, so drawn out was the journey. It was all down to their perception of course because it was something they wanted so much that it seemed to be taking an eternity to get it. However, they were here now and with each stride the two young men took they were that much closer to their goal.

Upon entering the medical centre Kyle found a diagram on the wall that showed the layout of the building as well as a key to explain where they were on the map and where each specific depart was located. Having found the high dependency ward they made a note of its location and headed for the stairs. The elevator would have been quicker but the stairs offered more options if they needed to make a fast getaway should they be spotted and recognised.

Under almost any other circumstances the banter would have been flying in between the two young men, such was their way, but now was not the time and their location was not conducive to bouts of levity. They were either about to make the most joyous discovery of their lives or find out some crushing news, neither left them in the mood to be flippant.

Stepping out from the stairwell they again checked the signs on the wall and turned in the direction they needed. They slowly moved along the corridor trying to look inconspicuous but they were so conscious of why they were there that they felt like every pair of eyes they encountered was fixed solely on them.

Eventually they found themselves trailing off to what looked like a side ward. A smaller ward meant few prying eyes but it also meant they stood out more, making them more conspicuous. Finally the glass partition that Isabel had described came into view. It wasn’t so much that the partition was notable for any particular reason but when Isabel described a small corridor leading to a small ward with a glass partition it didn’t leave much room for ambiguity. The two boys exchanged a look before each took a step towards the glass in an attempt to see who or what lay beyond.

“Can I help you gentlemen?” A friendly voice called. “You both look in need of assistance.”

Kyle immediately stepped in front of Michael, towards the pretty nurse who had spoken to them. “Hi…Nurse Brown.” Kyle greeted the young woman who was kindly offering assistance, having taken a squint at her name tag. “I think my friend and I might be a little lost. I think we took a wrong turn once we stepped out of the elevator.”

As Michael watched Kyle step in and fend off the nurse he noticed his smaller friend waving him away with his left hand that was secreted behind his back where the nurse couldn’t see. Seeing that the nurse was focusing on Kyle he took a couple of causal steps away from the conversing pair and towards the window. In one laid-back movement he turned around to look into the room and what he saw brought him to an abrupt halt.

Sitting up in bed, reading a magazine was Alex! Michael was amazed on two fronts as not only was Alex alive, which was dumbfounding in itself, but they had been told he was in a coma but this was nothing like any coma he had ever heard of, considering the patient was sitting up in bed…reading!

When Michael finally shook his head to snap himself out of his stupor he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. When he managed to focus his eyes he realised that Alex had dropped his magazine and was now staring back at him. Before he could think what to do he watched as Alex gave him a polite smile before returning to his magazine.

Michael spun around when he heard someone calling to him but it wasn’t his name they were calling. “Jerry, Jerry can you hear me?” Michael tried not to roll his eyes as he looked at Kyle. “This lovely nurse has explained to me where we went wrong. We should have turned left out of the elevator and not right. Are we good to go?”

Michael was fully aware of the hidden meaning to Kyle’s last question and he afforded his friend a smile as the realisation hit him. “We have good news.” He informed his companion. “I mean its good news that you now know the correct way to go.” He corrected his comment when he saw the puzzled look on the young nurse’s face.

Eve watched in amusement as the two young men left. “Good luck, Tom. I hope your uncle gets well soon.” She called after her lost visitor. She had worked in hospitals for a number of years and it never ceased to amaze her how it effected people. She decided that some people just weren’t hospital people and it sometimes left them a little dazed and confused.

Despite the seriousness of the situation Michael glowered at Kyle. “What?” He asked defensively.

“She just said ‘Good luck, Tom’?” Michael stated with arched eye-brows.

“So what?” Kyle frowned. “I didn’t think I should use our real names so I made some up.”

“You’re such a doofus.” Michael stated sternly as he turned to walk away. “In your rush to hide our real identities you called us Tom and Jerry, that wasn’t suspicious at all!”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The four watched from the van as the two young men retraced their steps back to their waiting companions, the two of them deep in conversation. Maria had moved from her spot on the back seat and climbed forward to join Isabel, whose hand she now held firmly in hers. When she had seen the boys ambling out of the medical centres reception area her first thought was to rush out to meet them as she felt they weren’t moving fast enough but she felt Isabel’s grasp tighten on her hand and it was then that she realised that no matter how much she stood to lose or gain on what they were about to find out, no matter how much she wanted this…Isabel wanted it more!

After what seemed like an eternity the boys made it to the van, sliding open the door before climbing in. Once they had closed the door they turned their attention to their friends. “He’s alive.” Was all Michael managed to say before the van erupted in cries of joy. Almost instantly the three girls burst into tears. They all wanted to know more but the initial feelings of relief at the thought that their friend was alive was palpable. Max simply wilted back into his chair, the thought that he would no longer have to live with the guilt he felt after losing his friend eighteen months ago was something he could barely comprehend.

It took awhile but eventually things started to calm down. Once everyone seemed to be fully composed Kyle looked mournfully at Michael. “Tell them.”

Michael dropped his head for a moment before he glanced up to look at Isabel. “We went through to the high dependency ward like Liz said but we had a little run in with a nurse. She was very friendly and only trying to help but it meant we couldn’t hang around without drawing attention to ourselves.”

“How did he look?” Maria asked hesitantly.

“Well the good news is he seems to be doing an awful lot of reading for a guy who is supposed to be in a coma.” Michael stated sarcastically.

“You mean he’s not in a coma?” Liz questioned excitedly before Isabel and Maria had a chance to.

Michael just shrugged. “He may well have been when he was brought in, whenever that was exactly, but right now he is sitting up in bed reading a magazine.”

Isabel had remained silent since the boys return. There were too many things going on in her head to make sense of it all. More than any of that was the relief that coursed through her veins that Alex was alive. However, her feelings were being tempered by the look she could so easily read on Michael’s face. “What aren’t you telling us?” She questioned tentatively. “I can see by the look on your face that you haven’t told us everything.”

“It’s just…” Michael trailed off.

“We think he has amnesia.” Kyle stated in a rush as he cut in to help his stalled friend.

“What makes you think that?” Max narrowed his gaze and focused on Kyle.

“Firstly, he’s awake so if he knew who he was he would have told them and they would have called his parents.” Kyle rationalised. “Secondly, Michael said they looked at each other but Alex didn’t register him.”

“What does Kyle mean, didn’t register you?” Liz asked, turning to Michael.

Michael shrugged. “He dropped his magazine, looked at me for a moment and smiled politely before going back to his magazine.”

“Maybe it was one way glass?” Maria offered, clutching at straws for an alternative explanation. “Or maybe the shine on the glass meant he couldn’t see you?”

“It doesn’t matter, I’m going in.” Isabel stated forcefully as she released her hold on Maria’s hand and reached across to open the door.

“Isabel, wait.” Max called.

Isabel kept moving in spite of her brother’s request. “I promised to do it your way and I am, Max.” She called over her shoulder. “I won’t cause any trouble but I have to go to him!”

The friends watched as Isabel marched purposefully towards the medical centre.

“What are we going to do?” Maria asked nervously.

“We’ll give her a few minutes and then we go in after her.” Max said resolutely. “Despite all my comments about taking it easy and not drawing attention to ourselves the fact remains we have just found Alex alive and we are not leaving him. He’s one of us and we are not losing him again, no matter what it takes.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Isabel was unaware that she followed the same route as the boys. She took her directions from the diagram and made her way upstairs. As she moved along the corridor she could remember her dream as it came back to her in flashes. Finally she reached the end of the small corridor and found the glass partition that she had seen in her dream in the early hours of that very morning.

She had been fighting back tears since she had left the van but by now she had failed miserably and they were streaming down her face but she no longer cared. She only cared about one thing now and her outward appearance wasn’t it.

Taking a few tentative steps she moved into the room and was barely able to hold it together when she found Alex slightly slumped in his pillows with a magazine that had fallen open on his lap. The only sound Isabel could hear was the familiar ping of the heart monitor as it registered a strong and even beat. It became clear that Alex had fallen asleep while reading and was now oblivious to her arrival.

With a few more steps she was beside the bed. She slowly reached out to touch his face but pulled her hand away at the last moment for fear of waking him from his peaceful slumber. She simply stood and stared in near disbelief at the slumbering beauty that lay before her. Despite the dreamlike situation she found herself in she laughed inwardly, imagining Alex’s response if he could hear her describe him as a sleeping beauty, which in her eyes he was. He was everything she every wanted to see in this lifetime, rolled up into one sleeping young man. The very sight of him made her heart soar and it made her realise all the more just what she had lost eighteen months previous. Eventually she heard someone step into the room behind her but she was so transfixed by Alex that she didn’t even bother to look around at who had come in or to try and hide her tears.

“Can I help you?” A gentle voice called.

Isabel sniffed as she turned to look at the attractive nurse who was now standing a few paces to her side, again not making any attempt to hide her raw emotions.

Eve watched in amazement as this towering, blond beauty simply stared back at her. The mystery visitor made no effort to move or to talk and no attempt to hide her overwrought emotions as the tears continued to flow down her cheeks, over-shadowing her striking features.

As she took a step towards the much taller girl she watched as the visitor looked at her for a further moment before she turned her attention back to the sleeping boy and it was then that Eve realised what she had seen in the distraught girl’s eyes, love. But not just love. There was also an understanding as well, an understanding that grew out of an intimacy and absolute knowledge of another individual that was so rarely achieved in life, let alone in a person of such clearly tender years. Making a leap of faith that she just knew had to be right she asked gently. “Are you Isabel?”

It was Eve’s turn to be overcome with emotion when the tall visitor turned to look at her, the overpowering relief at being reunited with her loved one clear to see on her face. She simply nodded, not showing any sign of surprise at such a question, before turning back to their slumbering companion.

Eve turned her attention back to Adam, or the young man she knew as Adam. “Can you tell me his name?” She asked nervously.

“Alex,” Isabel stated lovingly. “His name is Alex Whitman.”

Suddenly Alex began to stir. The moment he saw Eve and a strange woman standing over him he jumped up from his slumped position. He noticed Eve looking at him in an odd way but he couldn’t draw his attention away from the stunningly beautiful young woman who currently stood beside his bed weeping gently.

Alex was now transfixed by his unexplained visitor. It wasn’t even the surreal sight of waking up with what looked like a supermodel standing over his bed crying that was holding his attention. It was more the feeling of familiarity that was washing over him as well as how comfortable he felt in her presence despite her troubled demeanour.

His first reaction was to reach out to the beautiful young woman, to pull her into his arms and calm her distraught behaviour. He had an overwhelming desire to comfort her but he soon put that idea out of his mind when it dawned on him that he couldn’t exactly make a grab for some mysterious woman, even if his intentions were honourable. Instead be tried a different approach.

“I’m sorry.” He began nervously. “You look familiar, do I know you?”

This is really turning out to be a swing and a miss. I'm really enjoying writing this but there doesn't seem to be much interest in it. ( Other than my usual friends :) . ( It's a good job it's going to be short. )

Chapter 6

“Yes, you do.” Liz cut in, stepping into the room. “She’s your best friend Isabel.”

Eve took an involuntary step backwards upon hearing an unexpected voice. She turned to look at the girl who had stepped into the room to join them and was further surprised to see yet another girl teetering in the doorway. Alex, as she now knew him, hadn’t had any visitors in the last year or so and now he had three in the last five minutes.

Despite not feeling threatened or uncomfortable with what was happening Eve soon realised something out of the ordinary was taking place before her very eyes. It wasn’t the sudden arrival of three visitors for Alex that she was finding particularly fascinating so much as the way all three now stood mesmerised by the young man.

Alex, for his part, sat speechless as he watched the three young women just stand and stare at him. The tall beauty that he had seen first of all remained standing beside his bed, motionless with tears still running down her cheeks, although he was relieved to notice they seemed to be slowing. Then there was the petite brunette that had stepped in to answer on behalf of the first girl, who was now wavering in between the doorway and the bed, tears glistening in her eyes. Finally, there was the petite blond who had been standing in the doorway behind the other two girls. She, unlike the first two, had not remained still and was currently moving slowly towards the bed. She had a strange look on her face that he couldn’t quite fathom. It looked like she was stalking him like some kind of prey but whatever was on her mind it clearly involved her getting closer to him.

“I’m sorry but can I ask who you ladies are and how you know Alex?” Eve finally asked, realising she needed to take some kind of action.

Liz was the first to snap out of her stupor and turned to the concerned nurse. “You know his name?” She asked in surprise.

Eve shook her head slightly. “I didn’t until Isabel told me a moment ago.” Liz went wide-eyed upon hearing the nurse use Isabel’s name as well. It seemed her friend had released more information than they had planned. “Alex was brought into the hospital in a coma, which he has only recently woken up from.” She continued. “When he finally woke up he was found to be suffering from some form of amnesia, the long term effects of which are still to be discovered.”

Before Liz had a chance to ask any further questions she was interrupted by a question she hadn’t been expecting and it nearly broke her heart.

“My name is Alex?” A familiar voice asked from the bed as Liz turned to look at him.

She nodded gently, fighting back a second round of tears. “Your name is Alex Whitman and you are our best friend. I’m Liz, that’s Isabel and the scary looking one is Maria.” She smiled slightly as she nodded towards Isabel and then Maria.

Alex looked slowly from one beautiful woman to the next, the petite brunette’s words ringing in his ears. So much was happening and so many things needed to be answered that his head started to spin. He was so lost in his own confusion that he was unable to censor himself before the next words came out of his mouth. “Three beautiful women as my best friends…” He trailed off for a moment. “…I’m not gay, am I?”

Liz honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. On the face of it Alex’s last comment was amusing to say the least but the truth of the matter was he was so clearly lost that he didn’t know which way was up. Her heart went out to her rediscovered friend and she quickly realised that she needed to take control of the situation for all of their sakes, not least Alex’s.

“No, Alex. You are definitely not gay. I know this is all happening too fast and that you have a million and one questions but I have some things to take care of first. Please be patient and I’ll be right back.” Liz pulled her gaze away from her bemused friend and turned to the bewildered nurse who stood beside her. “Can I speak to you outside?” Liz asked hesitantly. When she saw the nurse glance towards Alex with a concerned look she quickly added. “I know you don’t know us but we are his friends and we only want to make sure he’s safe and that he’s getting better.”

“That he’s safe?” Eve repeated having picked up on Liz’s unusual comment.

“Please.” Liz gestured towards the small hallway. “I’ll tell you as much as I can and then you’ll be able to understand what is going on a little better.”

Eve may have been confused about what exactly was going on but the one thing she was sure of was that these people, whoever they were, were not here to harm Alex. Their loving and concerned faces told her that much.

“This might help.” Liz’s voice cut in on Eve’s thoughts. Eve looked down to find the petite girl offering her what looked to be a photograph. Taking it she turned it up the right way and was dumbstruck at what she saw.

The photo was of a group of people, most of them dressed up in very smart clothing on what appeared to be a formal night out, maybe a Prom even. Initially Eve couldn’t pull her eyes away from one point in the photo. On the right hand side of the picture she could see Alex and in his arms, held firmly in his grasp, was the tall beauty she now knew as Isabel. The way he held her so close and the loving smiles that sat on both their faces told Eve everything she needed to know about the connection the two shared. It explained Alex calling out her name, it made clear the reasons behind how upset the tall girl was at discovering Alex in the hospital bed and it answered why the two of them simply remained staring at one another even now. Alex may not have had his memory back but it was clear that this young woman was imprinted upon his very soul.

Also in the picture Eve could recognise the other two girls who now stood in the room with her as well as various young men including…

Eve pointed at the picture. “Are these two with you?”

Liz looked at where the nurse was pointing and she could see she had picked out Michael and Kyle. ‘So much for their stealthy visit earlier.’ Liz thought to herself. “They’re friends of ours as well.” She confirmed. “I take it you saw them earlier.”

Eve nodded and even smiled slightly. “At first I thought they were just lost but I noticed the big one taking a particular interest in Alex. I was getting slightly nervous, especially when the shorter one told me their names were Tom and Jerry. Of course that could have been their real names but that, coupled with their odd behaviour, had me a little worried. They quickly left and I decided there wasn’t any need to inform security.”

With one final look towards Alex, who was still watching the two girls who now stood beside his bed, Eve came to a decision. “OK, I’ll step outside but I want to stay in clear sight of Alex.”

Liz nodded and smiled. “Don’t worry, so do I.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Are you sure about this?” Kyle asked for the third time.

Max sighed heavily. “Kyle, I’ve already told you we couldn’t all go marching in there and we all know we weren’t going to get to go in before the girls so the most logical thing to do was let Liz and Maria go in after Isabel.”

“But what if they hit trouble?” He asked, clearly concerned.

“It’s not as though they have gone in to rob the place.” Max offered. “Plus don’t forget that both Isabel and Liz have powers so if they get caught in a tricky situation I’m confident they can handle it. I’m also sure they can get themselves out of it by using their charm alone, long before they’d need to resort to more drastic measures.”

“How come Maria got to go in?” He asked, folding his arms across his chest in a defiant but childish manner.

Michael turned to look at his annoyed friend. “Were you going to stop her?”

Kyle thought about that for a moment. “No!” He said finally.

Michael turned back in his seat. “There’s your answer.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Alex eyed both young women. Under any other circumstances he was sure he would have shied away from holding their gaze but he just knew that he couldn’t have looked away if he had tried. It wasn’t for the obvious reason that they were both stunningly good looking, which they were. He just knew that he had some sort of connection to them both, but it was more than that. He had listened when the small brunette, who was also beautiful he noted, had told him that they were all best friends. For just a split second he thought he felt regret when he was told that he was no more than just their friend, not least with the striking blond who had not taken her eyes off of him since he had woken up. However, he simply put that down to being shallow, more to do with wishful, lustful thinking than anything else.

“I’m sorry, I can’t hold off any longer.” The petite blond cried before making a lunge for Alex.

Before Alex could react the much smaller girl hurled herself at him and he just about caught her as she enveloped him in a vice-like hug. He wasn’t surprised that he didn’t feel more uncomfortable holding onto this unknown young woman as not only had he been told that he knew these girls but he was also beginning to feel like he knew them. He didn’t know how but he would have put money on the smaller of the two being the one to throw herself at him and he just knew that the taller girl wouldn’t. As conceited and self-opinionated as it would sound he knew she wanted to but despite not knowing the reason why he just knew she would hold off. It made him feel an even stronger connection to her than he did before, which he didn’t think was possible.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Liz started to play with her wedding ring as she thought about what she could and couldn’t tell this nurse. She may not have known her in the slightest but she could see the very clear concern she had for Alex and in this situation that spoke volumes. Finally, realising that the nurse was waiting for an explanation she knew she had better start and quickly.

“Firstly, my name is Liz.” Liz held out a hand towards the nurse who stood before her. “You know Isabel and the short one in there is Maria.” She nodded to the other room. “I know you heard me tell Alex a moment ago but I think a more formal introduction is in order.”

Eve glanced momentarily towards the other room and saw the girl she now knew as Maria almost lying on top of Alex. She quickly looked back at the girl who stood in front of her and took her hand. “My name is Eve, I’m glad to meet you.”

The ice now broken Liz launched right in. “Eve, I know you don’t know us and that you have many, many questions but the first thing I must ask you is that we keep this between ourselves.”

Liz watched as the young nurse visibly straightened up at her comment, which meant she would have to work fast. “You can see by the picture that we are clearly friends of Alex. We thought we had lost him in a traffic accident nearly a year and a half ago, that’s why we never came looking for him.”

“How did you find him now if you thought he was dead?” Eve quickly asked.

Liz sighed heavily, realising that with each question she answered, two more would crop up. “Can I come back to that one?” She asked. “I have so much to say and so little time that I can’t stop to answer all of your questions.”

Eve eyed the young woman for a moment before she nodded tentatively for Liz to continue.

“Alex’s parents believe that he is dead, as do all of his family and friends.” She continued. “I know your first reaction is to want to contact them and let them know he is alive but please believe me when I tell you that it is not the right thing to do at the moment.”

“You don’t want us to inform his parents?” Eve asked incredulously.

Liz shook her head. “Not at the moment, not least until we can get Alex’s memory back.” She added quickly.

It was Eve’s turn to sigh. “Liz, even if I could hold off telling his parents, which I’m not sure I have the authority to do, I haven’t been able to fully explain Alex’s condition to you. It is a strong possibility that he may never recover his memory.”

“Which is all the more reason to allow us to get to know him and for him to get to know us.” Liz cut in. “Surely you agree that having familiar people around him might help trigger his memory?”

“Yes, you are right.” Eve agreed. “And surely you agree that his parents are in the best position to do that. Unless of course you are telling me he had trouble at home?”

For a split second Liz thought about lying but she couldn’t do it to Mr and Mrs Whitman. She would have to find another way. “No…never.” She shook her head. “Alex has very loving parents. It destroyed them when they had to bury their son. Or what they thought was their son.” She quickly corrected herself.

“So you understand my need to inform them, right?” Eve asked gently.

Liz didn’t know what else to say or do, except nod her agreement.

Liz followed Eve back into the room just in time to see Maria release her grip on Alex and step back. “I’m sorry about that.” Maria offered. “I couldn’t hold off any longer.” She smiled sheepishly.

“No worries.” Alex smiled. “Correct me if I am wrong but I get the feeling it’s not the first time you and I have hugged.”

“It’s not.” Maria nodded. “And it won’t be the last either.” She stated firmly.

For the first time since Alex had woken up Isabel pulled her gaze away from him and turned to look at Liz. “Well?” She asked rather abruptly.

Liz could see the apologetic look on her tall friends face. She clearly didn’t mean to be rude but Liz could tell she was barely holding it together and she was looking for any sort of resolution to take the pressure off. “I’ve tried to explain to Eve that we would like sometime with Alex before they inform the authorities and his parents about him being alive but understandably Eve’s hands are tied.”

“My parents think I’m dead?” A voice absently called from behind where they all stood.

“I’m sorry, Alex.” Liz took a step towards his bed. “Your parents thought you were killed in a car crash eighteen months ago.”

“Didn’t they find a body?” He asked as he creased his face in confusion.

“They did but it seems it was misidentified.” Maria offered, stepping in to help Liz with the difficult explanation. “That’s why we haven’t been looking for you over the last year and a half. We thought we had lost you forever.”

“Then we must tell my parents.” Alex stated resolutely. “We have to let them know I am alive.”

All three girl’s shoulders visibly dropped as they saw what little plan they had disintegrate before their very eyes. They couldn’t stop Eve without telling her the truth, which wasn’t an option. Even Alex, in his current condition, didn’t know about what had gone on prior to his disappearance, which also meant he didn’t know about the alien side of his friends lives.

Isabel took a step towards Liz and reached for the picture she still held in her hand after taking it back from Eve. “May I?” She asked tentatively.

Liz nodded gently and handed Isabel the picture, unsure what her friend had planned. Isabel turned to face Alex and slowly moved towards the bed. Alex watched motionless as the stunningly beautiful young woman moved gradually towards him before perching herself gently on the side of the bed while still facing him. He followed her gaze and realised she was holding a picture in her hand. He couldn’t quite make out what it was a picture of as she was purposefully turning it over in her hands but finally she stopped turning it and offered it to him.

Alex accepted the picture with a gracious smile before dropping his gaze to concentrate on the picture. The first thing that he noticed was how weird it was looking at a picture that contained him without having any sort of recollection of having the photograph taken.

He scanned the photo and recognised the tall young man at the back as the guy he had seen earlier. Things just seemed to be getting more and more surreal with each passing minute. Finally his eyes were drawn to the part of the picture that contained him. As he looked at the picture he felt a mixture of emotions as he realised both how happy he looked and also how firmly he held the beauty, who currently sat on his bed looking at him, in his arms. He didn’t doubt that the two things were connected.

He lifted his eyes and for the first time he held Isabel’s gaze. A moment didn’t go by when he didn’t doubt himself so he was unsurprised to put his current desire to just stare at the beautiful young woman down to some hormone induced stupor but when he was finally honest with himself he knew he was selling himself short. He may not have his memory but he understood without a shadow of a doubt that he had some sort of connection to this woman that went far beyond just being friends.

“Do you trust me?” She asked softly.

“Yes.” He replied instantly, without any sign of hesitation. He didn’t know why but he just did. It may have been how she held his gaze without flinching or it may have been the way she had been clearly fighting to hold back her emotions since he had first laid eyes on her but either way he just knew.

“We can help you but it is too soon to tell your parents or the authorities about you.” She continued softly. “Please give us twenty-four hours. If things aren’t any clearer to you by then I will take you to Roswell myself.”

“Roswell?” He echoed.

Isabel smiled slightly. “It’s where we grew up and went to school together.”

She continued to look into his beautiful eyes and finally she realised that he did trust her and that he would wait. Isabel turned slightly on the bed to look at Eve who had heard and witnessed the intimate exchange, her eyes now pleading silently for understanding and compassion.

“Please, Eve.” Alex suddenly asked.

Eve sighed heavily. “Twenty-four hours but you can’t all stay as I won’t be able to explain your presence. One person, I can make up an excuse but three! Also, Alex doesn’t leave this room!”

“Thank you.” All the girl’s said in unison as they each breathed a sigh of relief. The break in tension was palpable.

Isabel looked from Liz to Maria and received almost imperceptible nods from each before she turned to look at Alex with a slight smile as she commented to Eve. “I’ll stay with him.”

A/N: Being a Stargazer it may not come as a surprise that I am not a big fan of Season3. Because of that I have made one tiny comment in this chapter that may contradict something in Season3 but as I have no desire to rewatch season3 to check I respectfully request you ignore it and go with the flow. ( If my comment is found to be mistaken. ) I just wanted to head off any comments at the start :D . Cheers, David

Chapter 7

Max glanced at his wife as he waited for the other two boys to come back to the van. It had been about twenty minutes since the girls had returned from their visit to Alex and it wasn’t a complete surprise when Isabel hadn’t returned with them. Liz had informed the boys that Isabel would be staying with Alex, for the time being anyway, and that they could discuss what their next step would be over a late dinner.

That brought them to were they found themselves now, namely sitting outside the reception area of yet another roadside motel while they waited for Michael and Kyle to return with their room keys.

The reason for Max’s furtive glances towards his spouse was the unmistakeable vibe that he could see coming off of his subdued wife like light from a lantern. He could read every minuscule gesture and nuance that collectively made up Liz’s persona and something was clearly wrong. The only crumb of comfort he could take, as he continued to look at his wife, was that he had a fair idea of what it was that was troubling her, which he hoped meant he could help.

Finally the boys reappeared and climbed back into the van, handing one key to Max and another to Maria, who sat alone on the back seat. Max checked the number before pulling off and heading on round to the parking area directly in front of their rooms. It was noticeable that everyone had remained silent. The emotion of what had happened in the last hour was clearly catching up with them.

As the silence continued they all climbed out of the van and moved towards their separate rooms. Michael gave a muted nod to Kyle, who nodded a reply of understanding in return, before he moved off to follow Maria into her room. Both young men knew that having just had Alex returned to her life was going to cause Maria a rollercoaster of emotions that would include both joy and pain. Joy at having had Alex returned to her and pain as the guilt and self-recrimination began about how she had left him behind. The latter of which was totally unfounded, of course.

Max followed Liz into the room and gently pushed the door closed with his heel as he still had hold of both their bags. He slowly dropped the bags to the side as he watched, silently as Liz simply stood in the centre of the room, facing away from him and towards the far wall. Almost immediately Max could make out the gentle shudder of her shoulders as she started to cry. In an instant he was at her side, turning her gently towards him before she buried her tear stained face into his chest and began to sob heavily.

The pair stood like that for several minutes, Max giving comfort where he could while Liz released her pent up emotions. From the moment Max had seen Liz climb back into the camper van he knew she was holding things together by a thread. He didn’t have to have been in the hospital room to know how things would have played out. He didn’t need to see it with his own eyes to know that Liz would have put her own needs and feelings to the back of her mind as she did anything and everything to set things straight with Alex.

They had all been given the near impossible task of trying to act causal and even nonchalant as they went to see Alex for the first time in nearly a year and a half, while inside all three girls would have been faced with utter turmoil. His main concern may well have been for his wife but it didn’t mean his heart didn’t go out to both his sister and Maria as well. Isabel hadn’t changed that much over the last year or so which meant that despite the fact that she would have been overjoyed at having Alex back it would have been but a fleeting moment before her insecurities and self-doubt returned. Maria, out of all of them, wore her heart on her sleeve, for the most part. That meant her desire to simply grab hold of Alex and never let go would only be out done by her illogical method of masking her relief at having him back, which would be to blame Alex for leaving her in the first place and making him promise to never do it again.

Max gently stroked the back of Liz’s head as her tears began to subside. After a few further moments he released his hold on his diminutive wife and reached for a tissue, which she accepted gratefully. Once she had managed to recompose herself she slipped her hand into his and the two of them moved over to the bed and sat down. Max continued his silent observation of his wife knowing she would talk when she was ready.

“He looked great.” She suddenly began. “I’m not sure what exactly I had been expecting but he just looked great.”

“That’s a good sign.” Max replied with a gentle smile. He understood his wife enough to know that this was about her expressing her feelings to him, getting them out in the open. That meant she would be doing the vast majority of the talking and his job was to listen and to understand.

“When I stepped into his room and saw him just sitting there like nothing had happened I really didn’t know what to do with myself.” She continued. “I know it was exactly the same for both Isabel and Maria. I’ve no doubt we all just wanted to step up and hug him and tell him everything was going to be alright and that we would never lose him again but we couldn’t because not only was there a nurse there but Alex doesn’t have any recollection of who we are.”

“None whatsoever?” Max questioned.

Liz shrugged. “I really don’t think so but I could swear that with each passing moment that we were with him he seemed to be sensing more and more of a connection to us.”

“And what about Isabel?” He prodded gently.

Thinking of Isabel simply made Liz smile. “They are so imprinted on one another it isn’t even funny.” She confessed. “Alex may not have his memory but he knows he is connected to Isabel somehow, that much was clear for all to see. Even without knowing their past history he trusted her instantly, simply by looking at her he understood that she was there only for him.”

“Will she be alright at the hospital on her own?” Max asked, his concern for his sister paramount in his thoughts.

Liz smiled broadly as she briefly turned to look at her husband. “She’s not alone, Max. She’s with Alex.”

Max matched Liz’s smile and gently admonished himself for making such a thoughtless comment even though he knew his wife was only playing with him. She understood what he was asking and why.

“We met the nurse that Kyle and Michael bumped into earlier. Her name is Eve and she seemed very nice, it was apparent that she has been taking very good care of Alex. It was clear that she had formed some kind of bond with him.” Liz explained. “From what I can gather Isabel was in such a state when she went in that our plan to keep things on the quiet simply past her by. By the time Maria and I got in there, which was only a few minutes after Isabel, Eve already knew not only Alex’s name but Isabel’s as well.”

Max dropped his gaze for a moment as he let Liz’s words sink in. He could have done without the hospital staff knowing Alex’s name as they could now inform the police and the authorities but the fact that his wife and her best friend had returned to the camper van so casually as well as having left Isabel in there with Alex meant there was more to be said on the matter.

“After Isabel explained to Alex that she thought we could help him and that we just needed some time she managed to convince both Alex and Eve to give us twenty-four hours before taking things further.” Liz continued. “Eve obviously has no idea of our background and it is not like she is going to make a huge leap and suddenly think we are on the run from the FBI so I’m hoping she might put our need to be mysterious down to some kind of late teen angst or something similar. She already asked me if Alex was having trouble at home so as horrible as it sounds I hope she continues to think along those lines, giving us time to hopefully get Alex back to normal.”

“Do you want me to go in and try to fix his memory?” Max made the offer but he already had an idea of what was going on so he almost knew the answer before Liz said it.

“We might.” Liz nodded. “But I imagine it will come as no surprise when I tell you that Isabel will want to try herself, first of all. That much was clear by the look on her face. The fact that Alex’s problem isn’t life threatening means we can afford to be a little more relaxed than we normally would be, maybe even leaning towards sentimental about things. I know if anyone could solve any problems that I might encounter I would want it to be you and I already know you would want to heal me. The same goes for Alex and Isabel. Anyway, you would have to get past Isabel to get to Alex at the moment and I wouldn’t fancy your chances.” That comment made them both chuckle simply because it was so true. “Alex may not have his memory and doesn’t know what we are capable of but he would much rather have Isabel looking after his wellbeing than you and I don’t just mean for the obvious reason of being looked after by a beautiful young woman. Plus if she does manage to get his memory back it is going to mean everything to him that it was Isabel that did it.”

Max dropped his head, his mood clearly turning solemn. “Everything has been happening so fast that I haven’t even had time to think about the specifics that Alex has been through or what he has yet to learn.”

“I know.” Liz agreed as she rubbed her husbands back in a reassuring manner. “We’ve no way of knowing, at this stage, what Alex will remember, if and when we get his memory back. It may be the Prom or maybe some of the next day. We may even find out what happened to him, how he is still alive after we thought Tess had killed him.” Liz turned to look at Max who was now gazing firmly at her. “If we do get his memory back do you think it will be like the morning after the night before for him? As in he will still have as strong feelings for Isabel as he did at the end of the Prom?”

Max shrugged. “I would imagine so but I would think his feelings will be tempered by the fact that he will remember everything that has gone on in the last week. He will remember seeing you all but not recognising you. I can only imagine what that will do to him.”

“It’s abundantly clear that Isabel still has strong feelings for him but are they both in the same place, right now?” It was Liz’s turn to look mournful. “And all of this is before we have even mentioned Jesse.”

Suddenly there was a gentle tap at the door. Max turned and pulled Liz towards him as he kissed her softly on the forehead. “That will be the others. Let’s go and get something to eat and we can tell the guys what we have been talking about. Then we can make some sort of plan.”

Both Liz and Max stood up, getting ready to leave. “But what if we can’t restore his memory?” Liz asked nervously.

“Then we have to decide whether we leave him here so he can go back to his old life before us aliens came around and messed things up for him.” Max linked hands with Liz as he moved towards the door. “Or we kidnap him against his will and allow him time to get to know us all over again. If and when that time comes that will be a decision that only you, Maria and Isabel can make.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Alex tried not to get self-conscious about the fact that the beautiful young woman, Isabel, was continuing to stare at him. He had been trying to remain nonchalant since the other girl’s had left but even without his earlier memories he couldn’t imagine that he could ever get used to spending time with such a beautiful woman.

“Am I making you nervous?” Isabel asked gently, a smile playing on her lips.

Alex had to cough slightly to clear his throat. “Not really.” He said with a little less conviction than he had hoped for. “I must confess to feeling a little awkward but it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with me.”

“You?” Isabel frowned. “Why is it all down to you?”

“Simply because you know me.” Alex shrugged. “And it would seem that in some other life I knew you but as I sit and look at you now I just can’t believe that I don’t remember you, I’m so embarrassed.”

“You’re embarrassed?” Isabel chuckled. “What on earth have you got to be embarrassed about?”

Alex looked at his companion rather mournfully before explaining. “You’re my friend.” He stated firmly. “And it looked like there may have been a time when we were possibly more than that, if that picture is anything to go by, and yet when I look at you…nothing.” Alex dropped his gaze and started to fidget with his hands. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that to sound as callous as it no doubt did. It was very thoughtless of me.”

Initially Isabel had felt her insides begin to feel all warm and fuzzy as Alex told her how she was his friend, and probably more than that, but that died down almost as quickly as it had begun when he finished his comment and dropped his gaze.

“It was neither callous nor thoughtless of you.” Isabel leapt to Alex’s defence. “I can’t fault you for speaking the truth. It’s not your fault you have lost your memory so I don’t want you blaming yourself.”

To Isabel’s surprise Alex started to smile. “I don’t know why but I get the feeling you tell me off quite a lot.”

Isabel began to smile herself, not least because of the change in mood. Things had started to take a downward turn when she had actually stayed behind to try and cheer Alex up. “I’ll admit to having pointed you in the right direction on one or two occasions but it’s not like I am some kind of domineering girlfriend or even a Christmas Nazi!” She stated the last part firmly.

Alex went wide-eyed. “Christmas Nazi? Where on earth did that come from?”

“Sorry.” It was Isabel’s turn to drop her gaze as she began to blush furiously. “That conversation is for a whole other time.”

“What am I like?” Alex suddenly asked causing Isabel to lift her gaze. “I mean it seems like I am relatively quiet and polite but what am I really like?”

Isabel had to fight the urge to let out a dreamy sigh when she thought about how she was going to describe Alex Whitman. While still fighting the urge to blush she gave Alex’s question some thought. “I’m not exactly sure I am the right person to ask but the short answer is you are honest, loyal, caring, trust-worthy, brave and above all, the best friend a person could have.”

Alex frowned.

“What?” Isabel asked upon seeing his expression.

“Well aside from the fact that you sound like you just described someone’s dog, albeit a great sounding dog, I am a little intrigued by your comment about you not being the right person to ask.” Alex smirked. “Weren’t we still friends before I lost my memory?”

Isabel shook her head, which initially had Alex worried. “No you misunderstand, Alex. We were definitely friends before your accident.” She reassured him. She then paused for a moment, unsure about how honest she wanted to be when answering his questions. “The reason I am unsure I am the right person to ask is…I’m biased.”

That was not the answer Alex was expecting and it left him speechless for a moment. “Just let me check…” He began. “…they haven’t changed the meaning of the word while I was in my coma. You being biased about describing me is a good thing, right? Like you already think I am nice or great?”

Isabel couldn’t stop herself from smiling broadly at the boyish charm that still oozed out of every pore on Alex’s body. “Yes, Alex. I think you are both nice and great.”

Alex sat for a moment, smiling to himself in triumph. Memory or no memory he was sure he wouldn’t normally have the nerve to simply sit and chat with such an attractive young woman but he felt so at home in her company that he didn’t feel nervous or uncomfortable. “What about you?” He suddenly asked. “What are you like?”

Alex should have known it was going too well and having just seen the beautiful smile slip from his companions face when he asked such an innocent question told him that his luck had come to an end. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to put you on the spot. It was such a stupid question to ask.”

“Of course it’s not a stupid question.” Isabel countered, having finally regained her composure. She silently admonished herself for being brought to her knees by such a simple question, she needed to get over herself. “Let’s just say that out of the two of us you are the caring, nurturing type while I am more the stand-offish, distant type.”

Alex surprised Isabel by smiling at her comment. She hadn’t intended for her heartfelt comments to be amusing.

“Why are you smiling?” Isabel asked rather curtly.

Alex shrugged. “I think it might be because that with each minute I spend with you the more I seem to know you. I mean that more than just the literal meaning.” He explained. “I don’t mean I have spent thirty minutes with you so I know you thirty minutes more. I mean that I am reasonably sure I already have a pretty good understanding of who you are and what you are like.”

Isabel didn’t mean for it to be happening but she could feel her defences springing up all around her at Alex’s words.

“In answer to your question, the reason I am smiling is that I am sure that is the first untruth you have told me. Or at least half-truth anyway.” He corrected himself.

“You think I have just lied to you?” Isabel asked incredulously. She was unsure if she was annoyed at the audacity of his comments or the fact that he might have been right, which meant he was starting to read her.

Again Alex smiled. “Please, Isabel. I’m not trying to be rude or upset you but I can’t just sit here and watch while you sell yourself short. I may not have my memory but I know we are friends and as such I am sure we watch out for one another.”

“So what am I supposed to have lied to you about?” She asked, folding her arms across her chest.

“I didn’t say ‘lie’.” Alex shook his head gently. “I said half-truth, there’s a huge difference. It’s the same difference between a lie and a white-lie, the second of which is designed to stop us from hurting someone’s feelings or to allow us to be modest.”

“If you still don’t have your memories back, what makes you so sure you can read me?” Isabel questioned.

Alex dropped his gaze. “I wish you hadn’t asked me that. This is where things might get a little uncomfortable.”

“No excuses, Alex.” Isabel stated as she took a step towards his bed. “You opened this can of worms and now you have to deal with it.”

Alex lifted his head. “Are you sure?”

“Positive.” Isabel nodded.

“Fair enough.” Alex shrugged. “The reason I know you told me a half-truth was because you said you were distant.”

“That’s your proof?” Isabel asked in amazement. “You’ll have to do better than that, Alex. I mean, look at me now.” She looked down at herself. “What does my body language tell you? I have my arms folded across my body and I am standing over here, away from your bed. How much more distant do you want me to be?”

Alex smiled as he shook his head. “In case you are unsure, this is where things will get uncomfortable. I believe with all my heart that since I woke up and found you standing over me you have wanted nothing more than to pull me into your arms and hold onto me. That is why you are standing so far away, to keep temptation out of your reach.” Alex quickly threw up a hand to stop the outburst that Isabel was undoubtedly about to release. “Before you say it I know how that sounds but I am still convinced and one of the reasons I am convinced is because from the moment I laid eyes on you, I have wanted to do the same. I may not remember you and I know you are a beautiful woman but it is more than that. I don’t want to look at you because you are pretty, I want to look at you because of how you look at me in return. I don’t want to hold you because you are a beautiful woman, I want to hold you because…because that seems to be the right and natural thing to do.” He wasn’t surprised when he started to falter towards the end of his unprepared speech.

That last comment deflated Isabel’s growing anger at Alex’s arrogance in a split second. She didn’t know if she was going to bite his head off for being so egotistical or for being so right but his last comment had put an end to that.

Alex continued. “I know how that sounded but it is the truth so there was no other way to say it. I can’t imagine myself having this type of conversation with anyone else in this world but with you, it just seems normal. I know I must be making you feel uncomfortable and that really isn’t my intention but you are just so beautiful I can’t help but just want to sit and stare at you just so I can watch you looking at me in return.”

Isabel allowed her arms to drop down by her sides as she took a step forward. “Say that again?” She asked, her voice little more than a whisper.

“Which part?” Alex asked in confusion.

“The bit at the end.” She pressed.

Alex straightened himself up on the bed. “I said you were beautiful and that all I wanted to do was sit and stare at you.”

Isabel covered the remaining few paces to the bed in a flash. Without waiting for an invitation she launched herself at Alex and came crashing down into his arms, pushing him back into his pillows. It was all she could do to stop herself from crying as she felt his strong arms wrap around her and pull her close. She would never have believed that she would find herself back in his arms, she had lost him forever, but here she was, exactly where she wanted to be.

After a few moments she released her grip on Alex slightly and leaned back to look at his beautiful face. She made sure she kept a loose hold on her companion, not that she thought he was going anywhere. Not least because of the happy expression on his face.

“So if I was unsure about pulling you into my arms because you didn’t have your memory back and you didn’t remember me.” Isabel smiled broadly. “What was your excuse?”

“The same...” Alex nodded. “…and the fact that you are wearing a wedding ring.”

Chapter 8

Despite the fact that she was still sat on the bed beside Alex, her arms lightly holding onto her companion, Isabel felt as though the ground had suddenly vanished from beneath her feet. The sensation of freefalling was all that her mind could grasp as she continued to watch Alex talking to her, oblivious to the fact that his comment had been like a bolt to the heart. She was trying desperately to do several things at once and it seemed she was incapable of any of them.

Unable to focus she fell back on her most basic of instincts, which was to run. She easily broke herself free from Alex’s light hold and almost stumbled backwards as she got to her feet. She wanted to back away from the bed before she would turn and run but the combination of a lack of coordination and the bemused look on Alex’s face put a stop to that.

Finally, slowly, her mind began to regain control. She knew this was a subject she was going to have to face up to with Alex at some stage. It was simply a case of it coming up before she had thought through what she was going to say. The realisation that if she did run she would only have to come back at another time soon dawned on her. Then it hit her. From the moment Alex’s comment had left his lips she may well have been caught off guard but the fact remained that her thoughts since she had regained some form of composure had been about herself when the truth of the matter was that she should have been thinking about Alex. Was she really going to runaway simply to save face while the man who she had professed to love lay dazed and confused in a hospital bed? The answer was a resounding no!

Isabel took a deep breath and stepped back towards the bed. Now that she was fully focused she was unsurprised to see not only a concerned look on Alex’s face but also that her worried companion was half out of bed, on his way to her aid.

“Alex, stop that.” She commanded. “You’re supposed to be on the mend and we can’t have you running around the hospital, now get back into bed.”

Alex was confused on so many levels he didn’t know where to begin. He was trying to understand what had just happened but the more immediate task he needed to deal with was the six foot Amazon who was currently ushering him back under the bed clothes.

“Isabel, what just happened?” He asked in bewilderment.

Isabel simply smiled at him as she continued to tuck him in and straighten his bed. Alex had no idea that she was using every available second to devise some kind of plan to show her how she was going to navigate her way out of the growing minefield of troubles that she now faced. Little did Isabel know she was about to get some breathing space from an unlikely source.

“I was told you had a visitor.” Alex heard a familiar voice call.

Isabel straightened up and spun around to find a man dressed in a doctor’s coat standing in the doorway.

“Hello, Peter” Alex greeted his doctor, who he also now considered a friend. “Has Eve been telling tales on me again?” Alex smiled outwardly but in truth he was only half being polite. The other half was desperate to find out what Eve had told him.

“I just bumped into Eve down the hall and she said you had a couple of visitors and that one young lady had stayed to keep you company.” Peter smiled, turning to Isabel for a moment before turning back to look at Alex. “Does this mean we are going to finally get some much needed information about you?”

Alex and Isabel exchanged a quick glance, both somewhat surprised by how little Peter appeared to know. “Did Eve not tell you my news?” Alex frowned slightly.

“I thought I would leave that up to you.” Eve cut in as she stepped into the room from behind where Peter stood.

It soon dawned on Alex that they had left Eve in an almost impossible position and even now she was doing all that she could to help them out. The fact of the matter was they hadn’t told her anything and so she, in turn, had nothing to tell anyone else. That left her hanging when it came to Peter. She had done the only thing she could do, inform Peter of the visitors that Alex had received, not least because Isabel was still with him, and then point Peter in their direction so they could fill in the blanks. Not that Alex was in any position to fill in too many of the missing pieces.

“My name is Isabel.” Isabel suddenly stated, realising that someone had to break the prolonged pause. She stepped forward with an outstretched hand to greet the doctor.

“Hello, Isabel. My name is Peter Ellington.” He enthused. “I’m Adam’s doctor and part-time chess partner.”

“You mean I’m your part-time whipping boy rather than chess partner.” Alex countered, throwing a reassuring smile Isabel’s way. “He normally ends up wiping the floor with me.”

Isabel could feel her heart begin to slow from it’s rapid pace as she felt Alex subconsciously sending her feelings of reassurance. She soon realised that she was the only one in the room who had all of the required pieces to the puzzle so she was the one who was anywhere near to being in control of what was going on. ‘She could do this!’ She told herself. ‘She could make this happen’.

“I guess the first thing I should do is make a formal introduction.” Isabel began. “Peter, this young man you have been looking after is Alex. I know you have been using the name Adam but I can now tell you his real name is Alex.”

Peter smiled broadly as she stepped towards the bed, hand outstretched. “It’s a pleasure to meet you at last, Alex.” Peter emphasised Alex’s name as he shook hands firmly with him before looking back at Isabel. “Do we have a surname for Alex?” He enquired.

“No.” Isabel suddenly stated, causing both Eve and Alex to look at her in surprise.

Isabel had worked out that if they were going to stop the authorities or police from being called in she had to cover her mistake from earlier. The fact that both Alex and Eve had given them 24hrs before they themselves would contact the world and his wife meant Isabel was going to use every second of every minute to get Alex back to normal before the need for more drastic action. All of that meant she needed a cover story.

“It’s a funny story, really.” She began, turning her entire focus onto Peter. “I was here earlier to visit my uncle who is being treated for a broken leg. When my mom sent me to the gift shop to get some snacks and drinks I was so preoccupied with the magazine I had bought that I got out of the elevator at the wrong floor. It was only by the time I reached the end of this corridor that I realised I was in the wrong place.”

Both Alex and Eve watched, open mouthed, as Isabel effortlessly weaved a web of deceit that was designed to keep Peter from being suspicious, at least until this time tomorrow. If there was one thing that Isabel had learnt to do after almost a lifetime of deception it was how to lie. As she stood in Alex’s room, explaining to Peter who she was and how she knew Alex, she was fabricating a story as though Alex’s very life depended on it, which in the long term it might well do.

“When I was about to leave I noticed the patient in this room looked familiar. I took a better look, just to make sure, and suddenly I knew I recognised the young guy who was asleep on the bed.” She continued. “I asked the nurse, who I now know is Eve, who he was and why he was in here. She explained that you thought he had been in a car accident or something similar and that he had lost his memory. You see, Peter, I only met Alex a few times a couple of summers ago so I never knew him as anything other than Alex.”

“Oh.” Peter suddenly acknowledged. It was plain to see that his hopes of identifying who Alex really was were starting to fade with each addition to Isabel’s elaborate cover story.

“I appreciate this isn’t the good news you were hoping for but I think I might have a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.” That comment made Peter noticeably pick up. “As I said, I only met Alex a few times but I know some other friends of mine who spent a lot more time with him. They’re out of town until tomorrow so I am hopeful of getting more information from them once they return and of course as soon as I know, you’ll know.”

“Well I think after hearing that we have a reason to be optimistic. Don’t you, Alex?” He questioned with a broad smile. “It may only be a matter of time before we are able to inform your parents or guardians where you have been all this time.”

Alex nodded. “I think you are right, Peter.” Alex turned pointedly to look at Isabel. “I feel like I am halfway home already.”

Peter busied himself giving Alex a quick once over while Isabel stepped outside to give Alex a little privacy as well as the fact that she wanted a quiet word with Eve.

“I just wanted to say thank you…for what you’ve done for us.” Isabel offered as she approached Eve at the nurse’s station.

Eve turned and matched Isabel’s gentle smile. “Us?” She queried, picking up on Isabel’s specific choice of words.

“Alex.” Isabel corrected. “But us in the long run.” She added.

Eve took a step towards Isabel despite the large difference in height between the two of them. She didn’t need to be a brain surgeon to know she was unlikely to intimidate her mysterious guest, not that she was intending to try, but equally she wasn’t going to back away, not least when it came to the wellbeing of one of her patients. “Just tell me that you aren’t into anything illegal and that Alex will be safe.”

Isabel had already warmed to the petit nurse but she now realised she had a kindred spirit in the way that she wanted to keep Alex safe. “I know you don’t know me, Eve, but I give you my word that none of us have done anything illegal, not least Alex, and that the main reason we are here is to make sure Alex is safe and to keep him that way.”

Isabel dropped her gaze and sighed heavily before she slowly looked at Eve again. “It’s really complicated and it would take more than the 24hrs you have given us for me to try and explain but you have to know I would never do anything to hurt Alex. It was only because we had all thought we had lost him in a car crash that you didn’t have us all here over a year ago, looking for him. It’s like he has been returned from the dead to me so I promise you I will not allow anything or anyone to harm Alex or to get in our way.” Isabel eyed Eve for a moment. “That last comment wasn’t meant to sound imposing, it was meant to let you know that I take what we are doing very seriously. My one and only thought is of Alex.”

Eve looked at the beautiful young woman for a moment before she asked her next question. “I know this is none of my business and very inappropriate but you do love him, don’t you?” Despite phrasing it as a question she knew she meant it more as a statement.

Isabel could feel tears beginning to well up in her eyes. “More than anything in this world.”

“Promise me one thing.” Eve asked firmly.

Isabel simply nodded silently in agreement.

“Promise me you won’t leave without giving me a chance to say goodbye to Alex.”

Eve had barely had time to get out her request when she was enveloped by the much taller girl who was currently wrapping her in a bear hug. “I promise.” She whispered into her ear before stepping back. “Not that I believe for a second that Alex would leave without saying goodbye anyway.”

The two women exchanged a silent nod as they reached an agreement. Then, just as they smiled warmly at one another in understanding Doctor Ellington came out to join them. “Well it would seem that having visitors seems to agree with Adam…Alex!” He corrected himself with an apologetic smile directed towards Isabel. “All his vitals are fine. His heart rate is a little elevated but he assures me that if I need to know the cause I am to just look at his visitor.”

“He said that?” Isabel couldn’t help but blush. She turned to look into the room and found that although he couldn’t hear what they were saying he was still looking in their direction. “If you’ll excuse me.” Isabel smiled politely towards both Eve and Peter before she returned to see Alex.

Eve and Peter watched as Isabel moved tentatively back into the small room.

“What do I do about visiting hours?” Eve asked gently as she turned her attention to Peter.

Peter glanced at the two young people in the other room before he looked back at Eve with a compassionate smile. “After no visitors for a year and a half I think it would be rather unkind of us to kick Isabel out simply because of the rules. As long as you don’t mind and it doesn’t cause you any problems I’m happy for her to stay. If anyone questions my decision just tell them I am hoping a familiar face will jog his memory. If that doesn’t assuage them then just have me paged and I’ll come and sort them out.”

“Sort of like Peter to the rescue.” Eve teased gently as she watched Peter move away, down the hall to continue his rounds.

“Of course.” Peter laughed as he looked back over his shoulder at Eve. “Anyone messes with my favourite nurse will have to answer to me.”

“No wait! I didn’t mean…” Eve trailed off as Peter sailed out of earshot. Slowly a knowing smile crept across her face and she began to blush as she realised that Peter hadn’t misunderstood as it first appeared. He knew she had been talking about Alex but he had felt brave enough to make it about her. Maybe Alex was right. Maybe Peter did have a thing for her, more than that she was beginning to realise that if he did, it wouldn’t be such a bad thing after all.

Isabel had stepped back into Alex’s room but she had kept her distance in relationship to the bed. Alex had watched with growing curiosity as the beautiful woman had returned and he could only imagine what was going on in her frantic mind.

“Can I ask you a question?” He asked softly.

Isabel nodded silently.

“What is your first memory of me?” He questioned.

Isabel was somewhat taken aback by that question, it was the last thing she had expected. “If the truth be told we only really got to know each other about three or so years ago. Of course I remember seeing you all the way through various schools but I used to keep myself to myself most of the time.” She paused for a moment. “I think I remember you in about third grade.” She nodded. “That would have been the first time.”

“Do you know the first time I saw you?” He continued.

Isabel shrugged. “I guess about the same time, maybe slightly earlier.”

“Try an hour ago.” He offered with a smile.

“What?” Isabel frowned. “I don’t understand.”

Alex continued to smile. “That’s what I am trying to explain to you, so you understand that you aren’t offending or hurting me by any of your comments or past actions. I can recognize that it is a difficult concept for you to grasp if you have never experienced it yourself but the fact that I have lost my memory means everything is new to me and I am sad to say that includes you.”

Alex gestured towards the bed. “Please come and sit here and I will try and explain.” When he saw Isabel falter he added. “It doesn’t have to be on the bed, a chair will do as long as I am not shouting across the room at you.”

Isabel let out a slight laugh in spite of herself. She approached the bed and without hesitation she perched herself on the edge, close enough to encourage them both without overwhelming Alex.

“I know you must find this all very confusing but I ask you to see it from my point of view. I wake up after eighteen months in a coma only to find I can’t remember who I am or where I come from. Then I start having all these weird after effects from being in a coma for so long like trouble sleeping and strange dreams.” He began.

Isabel’s head shot up. “Dreams, what dreams?”

Alex was slightly taken aback by Isabel’s strong reaction to his comments. “It will sound very strange but it was like I was in this black nothingness, if there is such a word. It went on for a couple of days but then stopped for nearly a week but it turned out that the doctors had been giving me some heavy duty sedatives that were stopping me from dreaming so I could get a good nights sleep. Finally, when they removed me from the powerful drugs I had the weirdest dream of all that culminated with…” Alex trailed off as he realised that Isabel had been hanging on his every word.

“Culminated with what, Alex? Say it…please.” She pressed gently.

“You’re going to think I am mad but I could swear it ended with me seeing you standing in my room, which can’t be possible because I hadn’t seen you at that time, not since my memory loss anyway.” He said quietly. “Would you believe that Eve said I woke up shouting a name, your name.” He lifted his gaze to meet Isabel’s. “Does that sound crazy to you?”

Isabel shook her head as she wiped away at the tears that had formed while she had listened to Alex’s heart wrenching words. “No I don’t think it sounds crazy, I think it sounds just about right.”

“It does?” Alex asked incredulously.

“Trust me, Alex, when I tell you that there are a lot of strange things going on around here but none are over and above what either you or I have encountered before.”

Alex began to fidget with his hospital wristband. He was nothing knew to Isabel so she could tell he was building up to something.

“Where’s your husband now?” He suddenly asked out of the blue.

Isabel’s first reaction, as ever, was to recoil but she steadied herself. Since Alex had made his comment about her wedding ring she had been trying to prepare herself for this conversation. She knew it wasn’t going to go away and that it had to be dealt with sooner rather than later, although later might have been her chosen time if she had been given the option.

“He’s back in Roswell.” She stated softly, her voice little more than a whisper. She watched as Alex visibly deflated before her very eyes. “It’s over!” She barked out a little more forceful than she had intended. Her outburst made Alex straighten up in the bed. “Sorry.” She offered meekly. “I didn’t intend to assault you with that statement but it is rather a touchy subject when it comes to you and me so my emotions are fluctuating a bit at the moment.”

“We don’t have to talk about this.” Alex started to backtrack. “I have no memory of what went before so anything I get from you now is wasted on me. I should wait until if and when my memory returns.”

“If you don’t mind there are one or two things I would like to set straight now.” She asked nervously. “It might help to give you a better understanding of our relationship, until you get your memory back.” She added hurriedly.

Alex simply nodded.

“The short version is that your best friend Liz started to date my brother Max. Then Maria started to have feelings for Michael, the big guy from earlier.” She explained.

Alex nodded in understanding. “And then you and I started…” Suddenly he trailed off when he saw the look on Isabel’s face, showing him his small assumption had been incorrect.

“This will sound very conceited of me but the truth is you had had a crush on me for a number of years.” She forced herself to look at Alex. “Your words not mine.” She smiled weakly.

“Don’t worry about it.” Alex returned her smile. “I’ve only known you about an hour and already I have a crush on you so god only knows what seeing you for eight or nine years might have done to my weakening resolve.” He quipped.

Isabel paused for a moment, mentally checking with herself what she could and couldn’t tell Alex at the moment as he didn’t know their full background. “I know you don’t remember me and that despite that you will leap to my defence at my next statement but you will have to believe me when I tell you that I wasn’t a very nice person and that I didn’t deserve someone like you.” She quickly held up a hand to stop Alex interrupting. “I would like to think I have changed over the last three years but the fact remains I didn’t treat you very well and yet you continued to be my friend and look after me.”

“Isabel, If I am as nice a guy as you keep telling me I would like to think that if I was interested in a girl she would have some redeeming features so you will forgive me if I wait until I have my memory back before passing judgement.” Alex reasoned. “Just tell me how we were before you thought you had lost me. You’ve already said we were friends.”

“We were.” She replied quickly. Isabel couldn’t help but smile when she thought back to the night of the Prom. “The very last time I saw you was at our high school Prom. You looked so dashing and handsome in your Tux that I could have danced with you all night.”

“I may not have my memory but I must admit I look pretty happy in that photo you showed me.” Alex surmised. “And you looked truly beautiful, still do.” He added.

Isabel realised that she wasn’t going to survive the night if she was going to have to spend the entire time ripping Alex’s heart out only for him to say more and more wonderful things about her. She needed to help Alex get his memory back and she thought she might know how.

With a quick look to make sure that Eve wasn’t watching Isabel shifted further up the bed towards Alex. “I think I might have a way to help get your memory back but you are really, really not going to believe me when I tell you.” She told him in a hushed voice.

“After the eighteen months I’ve had I am willing to try anything no matter how outlandish it is.” He replied in equally hushed tones. “If you don’t mind me asking, why do you think you can restore my memory all of a sudden?”

“I’m not sure I can but it is something I have been thinking about trying but the fact that you said you had seen me in a dream before I got here this evening means you are starting to make a connection to your old memories, even if it is in only a small way so far.” She reasoned. “Two things I have to tell you. Firstly, I need to make physical contact with you. Secondly, you may get the sensation of seeing flashes, like images. Please just ignore them. I have no time to explain now.”

“You’re not going to be using any illegal drugs on me, are you?” Alex frowned. When he saw Isabel smile and shake her head he nodded his agreement. “If you say it is alright then I’m willing to give it a try.”

Isabel closed her eyes for a moment and slowed her breathing. She was surprised at how relaxed she felt, considering what she was just about to attempt, but she soon realised it was who she was trying to connect to that was calming her nerves, not anything else. She slowly opened her eyes and had to fight the urge to smile when she saw the panicked look on Alex’s face looking back at her. Reaching over she cupped her right hand over the left cheek of Alex’s face while her left hand searched out Alex’s right hand and took a gentle hold.

“Close your eyes and just think about me.” She whispered as she closed her own eyes and concentrated on opening up her connection to Alex.

Almost immediately she could feel a connection spring into life. Despite the fact that it was what she had been trying for it still caught her off guard. She could feel Alex’s blood as it coursed through his veins and she even felt her heartbeat slip into rhythm with his but she was confused when she didn’t see any flashes or sense any feelings from Alex.

After a moment she broke them apart, letting loose her hold on Alex.

“I’m sorry. I don’t feel any different.” Alex confessed, breaking in on her thoughts.

“I know, Alex, and I’m the one who should be sorry.” She gave him a weak smile. “You shouldn’t feel sorry. I’m the one that is failing to do what I hoped I could do.”

Alex frowned. “May I ask what it is you are trying to do?”

Isabel thought about how best she could explain it. “You and I have a bond, a kind of connection. I was hoping that if I could get myself close enough to you that our connection might help you remember who I am and in turn, who you are.”

“And this has worked before, the connection I mean?” He questioned.

Isabel simply nodded.

“And this is how we did it before?” He pressed further.

“Not exactly.” Isabel started to blush slightly. “It’s normally strongest when we are being a bit more intimate.”

“You don’t mean…” Alex began to nod ever so slightly.

“Oh No! No.” Isabel shook her head while trying to hide her embarrassment once she had picked up on what Alex was alluding to.

“We just kiss.” She explained. “We’ve never…” It was her turn to trail off.

“Thank God!” Alex exclaimed. “I would have hated to have forgotten that.” When he realised what he had said he quickly turned away from Isabel as he flushed furiously. “I’m sorry, you weren’t supposed to hear that. I’m still getting used to saying things in my head and not out loud.”

Isabel allowed the comedic moment to die down as she pondered what Alex had said. If her strongest chance of making a connection with him was during an intimate moment she wasn’t going to let her shyness get in the way. Without another word Isabel refocused on Alex who was back watching her intently. She reasoned that if she leaned in to give him a kiss he would grasp what to do next and follow her lead. Just as their lips were about to touch she reeled away, stepping up from the bed and turned her back on Alex.

“What did I do?” Alex cried. “I’m sorry if I did anything wrong but I thought you wanted me to kiss you!”

“I did want you to kiss me.” Isabel countered. “You didn’t do anything wrong it was me. It’s just…it’s just I can’t kiss you in such a mechanical way. You mean too much to me and I am only used to kissing you in the heat of the moment, not when it is designed to achieve a specific outcome.”

Isabel closed her eyes as she tried to recompose herself. She didn’t doubt that she was going to do this, she had to…wanted to. That much wasn’t in question but she just wanted to be sure she was doing everything to the best of her abilities. She knew she was restricted by time so she would only have a limited number of goes at this before she would have to give up. She already knew she could call on Max anytime she needed him but it would mean everything to her if she could do this for Alex.

Suddenly she felt a strong hand on her shoulder. It firmly but gently turned her around and it was as she was turning that she found her breath was taken away by the towering figure of Alex who had silently climbed out of bed and approached her. It had been so long since she had seen him and this was the first time she had seen him out of bed, standing up. It suddenly hit her that she had forgotten just how tall he was. Even with her shoes on and him in his bare feet he was still several inches taller than she was. It was something she wasn’t accustomed to, except when it came to Alex. She then realised that if anything, he was even taller than the last time she had seen him.

“I was wondering if you would let me kiss you?” The very sound of his voice made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She almost thought she saw him wink at her, he suddenly looked so confident. “I’ll try my best to make sure it’s not mechanical and I think I need to kiss you else the heat of this moment could see me burst into flames.”

Alex had clearly picked up upon the fact that Isabel had wanted to kiss him but had backed off at the last moment. She had even gone as far as to explain why she had stopped at the final second but Alex knew there was more to it than just her flimsy excuses. He knew she was scared. She was here, alone with Alex and she was just trying to help him but her self-doubt had reared its ugly head. That was when Alex had decided to act. That was when he knew it was up to him to help Isabel take that final step. He understood their relationship more and more with each passing minute, which meant he was beginning to know his place in their connection. He was there to support her in any way required. He finally understood, even without his memories, his job was to make her realise she was capable of anything, she had no limits.

The joking comment from Alex was the last thing Isabel heard as his lips came crashing down onto hers. As her eyes closed she was overcome by the sudden reconnection to Alex and also the feeling of his strong arms that she could now feel wrapping around her, pulling her towards his tall, lean body.

She was trying her best to be the good friend she professed to be and concentrate on their connection but she was fighting with all of her might simply to remain in the kiss. She felt like she was just going to float away while throughout the entire kiss all she really wanted was to remember every moment, every nuance of this most amazing encounter.

Almost without realising it she started to receive flashes. Her connection was now full on and she was seeing and feeling the old Alex coming flooding back to her. She knew she was only receiving a small fraction of what Alex would have been receiving from her simply because he had been out of commission for nearly eighteen months but the fact that she was seeing the duplicitous work of Tess meant she had more than enough to contend with.

After what felt like several minutes she finally stepped back from Alex, fighting to catch her breath. As her senses slowly began to return to her control she tried to focus on Alex who was standing before her with a nondescript look on his face.

“Alex, Honey. Did it work?” She asked tentatively.

Alex straightened himself up from his slightly hunch position and nodded, causing Isabel to smile broadly in relief. “It looks like you fixed my memory…” He stated mournfully. “…but at the same time I think you broke my heart!”

A/N: Depending how the next part goes I may make it within my ten part prediction. If not, I will have to let you all down by writing a chapter 11 and hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me. Either way, not long to go. :D Cheers, David.

Chapter 9

“Anything?” Max asked. Concern was evident in his voice and that was to say nothing of the pained expression that was firmly fixed on his normally handsome features.

Both Liz and Maria simply shook her heads. “It would seem that we performed a minor miracle by just getting her to leave the room this morning.” Maria stated mournfully.

Max glanced back at the camper van to witness his normally strong, bold and fiery sister continue to sit slumped on the back seat of the vehicle where she was now firmly ensconced. Since they had left the motel a short while earlier she hadn’t spoken a word to anyone and it was only down to some persistent work by both girls the night before that she had said anything to any of them since her return from seeing Alex.

It had all started so brightly when she had returned from the hospital with such wonderful news about Alex and his recovery but it had been brought to an abrupt halt with the further news that he had not taken too well to the knowledge that Isabel had married so soon after his supposed death. Naturally the first two things to happen were a round of commiserations towards Isabel, trying to impress upon her that she hadn’t done anything wrong, as such. That was quickly followed by the impending charge to the hospital. Or it would have been if Isabel hadn’t informed them that the fact that Alex had regained his memory meant both Nurse Eve and Doctor Peter demanded that Alex be given as much rest as possible, not least because they now needed to run some tests on him.

Even that wasn’t going to stop Maria until a certain phone call brought a halt to all of her plans. Just as she was about to ignore all pleas and reasoned arguments as to why she shouldn’t go running to the hospital her cell phone rang, stopping her in her tracks. It soon became apparent that Isabel had given Alex Maria’s cell phone number, knowing full well that she wouldn’t take no for answer with regards her desire to visit Alex unless it came from the man himself.

After several tearful minutes of conversation between Alex and both Maria and Liz it was decided that they could hold off until this morning before they would visit him. That plan met with approval from not only Alex but also Eve and Peter, which meant the group wouldn’t be calling attention to themselves by turning up at the hospital outside of visiting hours.

All of that left them where they found themselves now, outside the hospital in the parking lot, everyone caught between wanting to go and see Alex and the desire not to leave an inconsolable Isabel.

“We knew this was coming as it was unavoidable consequence of getting Alex back to his old self but we never fully considered the ramifications of what Isabel connecting to Alex, in order to get his memory back, would do to them both.” Liz reasoned. “In an ideal world we could have gotten Alex’s memory back without the need to connect with him and then, after a few days, we could have picked a more opportune moment to tell him but it seems it wasn’t meant to be.”

“Maybe it might have been better if I had tried to get his memory back?” Max offered.

Liz shook her head. “I’m not sure it would have. If you had gone in to help Alex you would have had to connect to him, just as Isabel did, so the chances are he would have still seen the wedding. I admit it might have been slightly less painful seeing it through your eyes rather than Isabel’s but only slightly less. If either of you had tried to hold something back from Alex and not let him see the wedding it might have meant the connection wouldn’t have worked in the same way and he may not have recovered fully, which was the whole point of connecting in the first place.”

“So you are saying we were damned no matter who went in to help him?” Maria questioned.

Liz nodded gently, a sad look on her face. “I honestly believe, as I did yesterday, that in the long term they will both be thankful that it was Isabel that brought him back but it always meant we were in for a painful period in the meantime.”

“So what do you want to do?” Max decided that his wife clearly had a handle on what was going on, which probably meant she had a way of dealing with it.

“Well if you guys don’t mind I’d like for Maria and I to go in and see him.” She glanced from Max to Michael and Kyle who had been listening silently to the conversation. “I know you haven’t seen him yet and it’s not really fair but I want to have a quiet little chat with Alex.”

“Make him see the error of his ways.” Maria cut in rather sternly.

Liz couldn’t help but smile at her petite friend’s determination. “I think Maria’s right although I’m not entirely sure we agree on how to get the desired outcome we want.”

“That’s fine.” Michael stated, speaking for the first time since they had arrived at the hospital. “We can stay out here and keep Isabel company.”

Kyle went to speak but when he saw the stern look Michael sent his way he realised that he could wait a little while longer to see his friend again.

The two young women said goodbye to their companions and headed on inside the hospital. After watching them enter via the main entrance the three boys sauntered back to the van and gathered around the open side door while trying not to make it too obvious that the were concerned about Isabel.

“Can I get you a drink or anything, Isabel?” Kyle suddenly asked.

When he received a questioning look from Max and a glare from Michael he just shrugged. He knew Isabel hadn’t had any breakfast with them that morning so it was only right he should be concerned for her wellbeing, even if they were meant to be leaving her in peace.

“I’m fine thank you, Kyle.”

Isabel’s meek reply took all the boys by surprise, even Kyle. He may have asked the question but in truth he hadn’t expected a reply as Isabel had remained silent, to the best of his knowledge, since a brief conversation with Liz and Maria after her tearful return from the hospital last night.

Isabel lifted her gaze and looked at the three loving and concerned faces that stared back at her from outside the van. “I can see you are all worried about me but I promise I am fine. I just need a little time to get myself together and then I’ll be alright.”

“I know you might not want to hear this now, Isabel, but you didn’t do anything wrong.” Max stated softly. “I know it might have come as a shock to Alex but he has been gone from our lives for eighteen months and I’m sure we have a few things he will find surprising.”

“Like Liz having powers.” Michael cut in, trying to be helpful.

“And Max being transported into that old guy.” Kyle offered, a little less helpfully.

“Transported?” Michael repeated with distain. “It’s not Star Trek!”

“Pardon me for breathing!” Kyle responded, although he decided it might be better if he kept quiet for a while and leave the cheering up to Max. He could always jump back in once they had moved beyond the alien stuff that he still didn’t understand.

“It took me three years to let him hold my hand and yet when I thought he had died I went and married a man I hardly knew within a few months.” Isabel suddenly pulled their attention back to her. “He has every right to be hurt and confused, I would be.”

“You’re right.” Max nodded in agreement with his sister. “But he doesn’t know the full story.”

“Full story?” She echoed. “And what full story would that be, Max?”

Max held his sister’s gaze as he smiled slightly. “That you love him!”

Liz watched Maria moving stealthily along the corridor that led to Alex’s room. She was trying desperately not to laugh but she would swear she could hear Maria humming the theme tune to mission impossible as she went. “What exactly are you doing?” She finally asked her friend.

Liz’s question brought Maria to an abrupt halt. “I was trying to keep a low profile but if you keep asking me stupid questions it will defeat the object.”

“So why are you humming the theme tune to mission impossible?” She pressed.

Maria suddenly looked slightly embarrassed. “I didn’t know you could hear me. I was trying to get in the mood, you know…for my low profile thing.”

“Well it’s a nice idea but I don’t thing we need to worry. We haven’t done anything wrong so unless we do something suspicious we won’t stand out.” Liz explained.

“And by something suspicious you mean sneaking down a corridor in broad daylight humming the theme to mission impossible.” Maria realised.

Liz simply nodded and smiled.

“You’re not Liz and Maria are you?” A feminine voice called.

Both girls turned to see a nurse standing a little further down the corridor, just outside Alex’s room.

“Erm…yes we are.” Liz responded as she stepped towards the nurse, slightly confused. This clearly wasn’t Eve, the nurse they met yesterday.

“In that case I think we may have spoken on the phone.” The nurse stated with a warm smile. “My name is Sarah. I’ve been helping Eve look after Alex and I spoke to one of you girls a couple of nights ago when you were searching for him.”

Liz suddenly remembered the slightly familiar voice as the one she spoke to when she phoned in the middle of the night to try and prove Isabel’s assertion that Alex was alive and in the Santa Fe medical centre. “Hi, Sarah.” Liz greeted the nurse. “I’m Liz and this is Maria.” Liz nodded towards her companion. “It was me you spoke to on the phone and I can’t thank you enough for being so helpful. I can only imagine how strange it must have been for you to have me phoning up in the middle of the night but it was so nice of you to try and help like you did.”

“I’m only glad I could help.” She countered. “I would have been happy just to help get Alex back in touch with his friends let alone the great news that he is getting his memory back.”

“Getting his memory back?” Maria asked in confusion. She was under the impression Isabel had told them all that he was fully recovered.

Sarah nodded vigorously. “He says it is coming back slowly and it will only be a matter of time before it has all returned and we can inform his family.”

Suddenly it became clear to both girls that Alex couldn’t tell the staff he was fully recovered else they would want to know his full name, which would only cause them problems. By feigning a partial recovery he could leave out any of the bits he needed to keep secret until they were ready to leave, which they hoped would only be a matter of hours.

“Is it possible for us to see Alex?” Liz asked politely. Not only was she hoping to see Alex but she was also looking for a change in subject.

“Of course you can.” Sarah enthused. “He is in there eagerly awaiting your arrival. That was how I knew your names. He told me he would be having visitors today, at least two of which would be beautiful young women named Liz and Maria so when I saw the two of you chatting I took a guess and I was right.”

Sarah smiled before turning her attention back to her work station and the countless forms her job required her to fill in. Liz and Maria linked hands as they took the final few steps towards Alex’s room until their friend came into view. They were both surprised to see him out of bed but he appeared to be having trouble with his gown.

“Hello, handsome.” Liz greeted Alex as the pair stepped into his room.

As Alex turned he already had a huge grin on his face. Before he even had a chance to respond he was suddenly rushed by both girls, enveloped in a mini group hug. It was true to say that they had both seen Alex the night before but that, sadly, was merely a shell of the man they held firmly in their arms now. So much of what made Alex who he was could be found in his interaction with others. He was clearly a bright and interesting guy but it was his love and connection to the people in his life that made up such a huge part of him and of those people few meant more to him than Liz and Maria.

“I can’t believe it!” Alex exclaimed as they broke apart. “You guys are even more beautiful than I remember.”

“Ha, Ha. Very funny.” Maria took a playful swipe at her tall friend. “I’m still a little emotional so I would appreciate it if we kept the memory jokes to a minimum, please.”

“O.K.” Alex nodded in agreement before he turned to wink at Liz. “I’ll try to remember!”

“Don’t make me hurt you Whitman!” Maria threatened. “Isabel said you were fully recovered which meant the punishments can resume.”

Upon hearing Isabel’s name Alex’s demeanour changed in an instant. As the smile fell from his lips he allowed his head to drop as he moved slowly over to the bed and sat down.

Liz looked at Maria and saw her crest fallen friend mouth the word ‘Sorry’ to her friend before looking back at Alex.

“Alex, Honey. I think we need to have a good long talk and get a few things clear.” Liz began rather sternly.

Alex slowly lifted his head to look at his friend as Maria came to sit down beside him on the bed. “Liz, I know how this works. I’m upset with Isabel and you and Maria will try to cheer me up and explain to me what she did and why but I’m afraid it’s not going to work this time. This isn’t her dating Grant for some reason that has never been fully explained to me. She got married, Liz! And from what I could make out it was only a few months after she thought I had died. I would make some comment about not even being cold in the coffin but with Maria sitting beside me I think I would end up with a slap.”

Right on cue Maria slapped Alex on the arm, hard.

“Hey!” Alex cried. “I said I would make a comment, not that I did make the comment.”

Maria shrugged. “I’m not letting you get away with anything on a technicality.

Alex continued to rub his arm as he looked down at Maria, a smile slowly growing on his lips. “Something’s never change…I’m glad to say.”

Maria allowed herself to smile despite the seriousness of the situation as she gently leaned in to rest on her friend.

Liz moved to the side of the room and grabbed a chair and pulled it over by the bed in front of Alex before sitting down and fixing him with an icy stare. “If you want to do this then we can do this but I promise you, we are not getting up until this is done.”

Alex simply nodded at Liz with a nondescript look. “Give it your best shot.”

“Do you think you are being fair with Isabel?” Liz began.

“Am I being fair?” Alex asked incredulously. “In my mind I was at the Prom with Isabel about ten days ago and yet I wake up from a coma only to find she has gone and married someone else and you are asking me if I am being fair!”

“That’s my point, Alex. It wasn’t ten days ago. It was eighteen months ago. I can only imagine how hard this has all been on you but it has been hard on us as well. Aside from everything else that has happened in the last year and a half, and trust me there has been plenty, the most devastating thing was we thought we had lost you, forever.”

Once again Alex dropped his gaze. He had so much to understand, so much to take in and that was all before he had even given a thought to what his friends and loved ones had been through.

“I don’t expect you to even begin to understand what has happened to both you or us over the last eighteen months but what I need to make sure you understand is why Isabel did what she did and why.” Liz continued. “Come what may, Alex, we are taking you out of here sometime today, on that we are all agreed. I will tell you now it will take weeks, if not months for you to catch up on what has been going on which means we have to decide what our priorities are and mine are to make sure you know what that girl did for you and for you to get over your stupid, hurt pride and see the second chance you have been given. That we have all been given.”

Alex really wasn’t trying to be mean or callous but he wasn’t sure he could ever get over the hurt of what Isabel had done. “Can you honestly tell me that you would forgive Max if he married someone else?”

Maria suddenly snapped her head up and looked at Liz who had remained unshaken by that comment. Both girls knew Alex better than anyone so it was clear he hadn’t put the pieces together from any flashes he might have picked up from Isabel. He clearly didn’t know about Max and Tess. “Alex, Max had a child with Tess while you were gone.” She stated evenly. “Or at least that’s what we think happened.”

Alex’s initial shock at Liz’s first comment was tempered by his confusion at her second comment, which was matched by Maria who was speechless, rather unusually. “I’m sorry but I am confused. Are you saying they had a child or they didn’t have a child, I can’t workout which.”

“Up until about a week ago I would have simply told you they had a child together but also a week ago I would have said you died but thankfully that clearly isn’t the case.” Liz reasoned. “I would be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about the possibility that most of what we perceived as Tess’s actions might have been mind-warp’s but that discussion is for a whole other time. We need to stick to the matter at hand which is your stubbornness with regards Isabel.”

“I’m not being stubborn.” Alex countered. “I’m being angst ridden and heart broken.”

He was unsurprised when both girls started to smile at him as he had only said those comments in a half-hearted attempt to weaken their resolve but it clearly wasn’t working. ‘Damn! Why did he have to have such good friends?’ He thought to himself.

“So are you simply saying I should forgive Isabel for marrying someone after she thought I had died?” Alex questioned. He was confused when Liz started to shake her head.

“You’re missing the point, Alex.” Liz stated firmly. “Isabel getting married isn’t the point here.”

“It’s not?” Alex cut in.

“No!” Liz continued. “Isabel was heart broken when you died, we all were. The thing you have to remember is that I had Max. Maria had Michael. Even Tess, who was acting her socks off at the time, had the Valenti’s. Who did Isabel have?”

Alex thought about what Liz had said for a moment. “She had you guys.” He finally said, clutching at straws.

“You don’t mean that and all three of us know it.” Liz stated softly. “We were there for each other but we all had our own connection to you so we grieved in our own way. As much as I tried to help Maria through it and she tried to help me it was time that was going to get us past the loss of a loved one.”

“But that doesn’t explain Isabel’s sudden need to rush out and get married.” Alex blurted out.

Liz suddenly stood up from the chair and reeled away from Alex. “God help me if you say the word ‘Married’ one more time I will not be held responsible for my actions and I will end up doing you a permanent injury.” Liz turned back to face Alex. “Isabel didn’t rush to get married, she rushed into another relationship. The marriage was just an off shoot of that relationship.”

“And this is supposed to make me feel better somehow?” Alex queried.

“What have both Maria and I heard you say a thousand and one times since we met our alien friends? And more to the point since you have known Isabel?” Liz glared at Alex before continuing. “You kept telling us how much you liked her and how much she kept pushing you away. That every time your relationship took a step forward it would end up taking two steps back. Now how did you finally get together?”

Alex still wasn’t exactly sure where Liz was going but he knew she wouldn’t lead him astray so he answered. “I gave up.”

“I’m sorry, you what?” Liz exaggerated not hearing Alex for effect.

“I said I gave up.” Alex repeated. “I had tried my best but after two years of being pushed away I had had enough.”

“So why did she come and get you to ask her to the Prom?” Liz asked although she already knew the answer.

“Because she didn’t want to miss her last chance at a Prom.” Alex replied.

“That’s crap and you know it, Alex!” Alex was slightly taken aback by the force of Liz’s reply but he could see she was on a roll so there may be more to come. “She had a hundred other guys who would have cut their right arms off to go to the Prom with a girl like her but she chose you.”

Alex started to nod slowly. “O.K. Liz, I get it. Isabel liked me but where does that leave us?”

Liz shook her head. “No, Alex. She didn’t like you. She loved you. There is a world of difference.”

Alex slowly lifted himself from the bed, leaving Maria to look at both her friends as they squared up to one another.

After a long pause Alex continued. “Even if that was true it still doesn’t change anything.”

“For God sake, Alex. Of course it does!” Liz cried. “I thought I had lost my best friend in that car crash but Isabel lost so much more. She not only lost her best friend but she lost the only person she had ever loved and more importantly for her, the only person she had ever opened up to. If you saw enough in the flashes to see Isabel marrying Jesse then you should have seen enough to know that despite the fact that she married him she never opened up to him in the way that she did with you.” Alex looked at Liz as things started to become clear to him. “She never even told him she was an alien prior to the wedding! Doesn’t that tell you something about their relationship?”

Liz’s words were beginning to sink in and Alex suddenly felt a little unsteady so he moved back to the bed and sat down. Liz moved back to the chair in front of Alex and perched on the edge to remain close to him. Finally, Maria took hold of one of his hands and gave it a squeeze which caused him to turn and look at his petite friend.

“What Liz is so eloquently trying to tell you is that Isabel saw a life that she had never allowed herself to dream of become a possibility because she had found someone she could open up to, you! Then, as quickly as it had appeared, it was snatched away from her along with the man she loved. You know her better than any of us do so you know what was going to happen next.” Maria looked at her friend with knowing eyes.

“She was going to close down again.” Alex’s words were barely audible but the look on his face told the girls all they needed to know.

“If you have spent your entire life keeping people out and then the first person you dared to let in gets snatched away from you just as you are starting a life together you’re not likely to do it again, are you?” Maria asked solemnly.

Liz leaned in and took Alex’s other hand and held it in hers. “Isabel could see the chance of a normal life slipping away from her. You know better than anyone that she craved a normal life more than anything else. So she did what anyone of us might do, she panicked. She didn’t exactly throw herself at the first man who looked at her, as your mind might be imagining but what she did do was allow the first guy to show a real interest in her and to seem to care about her to turn her head. She saw with him the chance to have the life she dreamed of with you. I know this is a terrible thing to contemplate but if you had really been killed would you have wanted her to hide away from everyone and move into a convent or would you have preferred for her to attempt to find happiness?”

Alex looked at his loving friend. “Do I really have to answer that?”

“No.” Liz smiled while shaking her head. “But I know what you are truly feeling for Isabel, as does Maria. Unfortunately there’s a certain young lady who is currently sitting in an old, beaten up camper van in the parking lot across the street who doesn’t know how you really feel and it is tearing her apart.”

Alex suddenly stood up, a look of blind panic on his face. “I don’t have any clothes!”

Liz lifted the bag that she had dropped on the floor upon entering the room onto the bed. “Don’t blame us if you don’t like them, but I’m sure you will.” Liz winked at her friend. “Isabel bought them for you on our way to Santa Fe.”

A few minutes later Alex returned from the bathroom dressed in his new clothes. In truth they weren’t his usual style of clothing but they were definitely the type of clothes he knew Isabel liked to see him in, which was good enough for him. “How do I look?” He asked his awaiting audience.

“You look great.” Liz enthused.

“Really smart.” Maria nodded. “But you might want to undo that top button and give yourself some air.”

Alex simply smiled a knowing smile. “I think I’ll leave it for a moment. Despite you not letting me make any memory jokes I must confess I’m hoping for a little déjà vu.”

A/N: Well I tried my heart out to get finished in this chapter...and failed miserably. Sadly that means there will be one more chapter next week :D , then this will be finished. I hope you enjoy. Cheers, David

Chapter 10

Alex stepped out of his room followed by Liz and Maria. He could see Nurse Sarah with her back to him at the nurse’s station. Even from behind he could see that she was solely focused on whatever form it was she was filling in. He had thought about trying to sneak out but these people were his friends who had looked after him at his lowest point and he was determined to do whatever it was that he had to do without skulking away in the dead of night. He felt he owed them that much at least.

“Hi, Sarah.” He offered gently, trying to make sure he didn’t frighten the oblivious young nurse as he walked up behind her.

“Alex, you’re up and dressed!” She stated in surprise when she turned around.

Alex glanced down at his new attire. “The girls brought me some clothes as they guessed I wouldn’t have any of my own. We were wondering if it was OK if we go along to the cafeteria? I’m feeling much better and I was hoping to spend some time with my friends away from this room…it’s all getting a little claustrophobic in there.”

“Well I’m not really sure.” Sarah replied hesitantly. “I mean you’re obviously free to come and go as you please, it’s not as though you are under arrest or anything.” She laughed nervously. “If you were to leave you would either have to have a doctor sign you out or sign a form to say you are leaving at your own insistence and against the doctor’s wishes but none of that covers going for lunch in the cafeteria.”

“We promise to take good care of him.” Liz cut in.

“And we promise to bring him back at the first sign of any problems.” Maria added.

Sarah looked at all three of their eager faces. “Well I suppose the be all and end all is that I’m not your jailor as I mentioned. I have my job to get on with so there is nothing to stop you wandering off as soon as I go around the next corner. Plus you look like you could do with a good meal surrounded by friends rather than eating alone in your room.” She smiled.

Alex leapt forward and pulled Sarah into a hug. “Thank you so much, Sarah.” He stepped back but couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face. “I promise we won’t be long and that I will come back if I take a turn for the worse.”

“Alright then. Get going before I change my mind.” Sarah waved them away with a dismissive hand. “And don’t let the doctor’s catch you or I’m in big trouble.”

She watched as the three friends headed off down the hallway. In her many years of nursing she wasn’t sure she had ever seen a bigger turnaround in a person’s condition than she had witnessed in Alex. Just over a week ago they didn’t know his name and he was in a coma. Now they were getting to know the real man in side the body they had monitored for over a year and that was aside from the fact that he was now up and about, off to have lunch with his friends.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The three guys had congregated around the opposite side of the van from the open side door. By standing on the side that they were it meant not only could they afford Isabel a small bit of privacy, although they could still see her if they looked through the vans windows, it was also the side nearest to the hospital so they could see at the earliest opportunity when the girl’s were returning, which they hoped would be soon.

“So what are you going to say to Alex when you see him?” Kyle suddenly asked out of the blue.

Max and Michael exchanged a bewildered look before focusing back on Kyle. “What on earth made you ask that?” Michael asked quizzically.

Kyle simply shrugged. “I was just thinking about Alex and the kind of guy he is and that set me thinking about us and the kind of guys we are.”

“And what kind of guys are we?” Max asked now that Kyle had his full attention.

“Well you are Michael’s best friend and Michael’s your best friend.” Kyle began. “I don’t really have a best friend but I used to spend a lot of my time hanging around with my football and basketball team mates. That leaves Alex. It just struck me that all his best friends are girls.”

“So what are you trying to say, that Alex is gay or something?” Michael didn’t know where Kyle was going with this.

“On the contrary.” Kyle smiled. “I was just wondering who the fool is. We spend all of our time with other guys who never open up and keep ourselves to ourselves while Alex is all touchy – feely with the girls and spends all of this time with them fawning all over him. There was a time when I would have called him a wimp and mocked him mercilessly for it but now I think I might actually be jealous.”

“Where the hell is all of this coming from?” Michael didn’t like where this topic of conversation was heading. “Have you been reading those ‘I wanna be a tree’ books again?”

“Where this is coming from, as you so eloquently put it, is I am wondering how I will react when I see him again. I mean do I just give him a manly handshake or pat on the back like us real men are supposed to do or do I let myself go, pulling him into a hug and maybe even cry a little, if that’s what I feel like doing?”

“Whatever you decide I think you had better make it quick.” Max suddenly cut in, pulling their attention to him just as he nodded across the street. “Here comes the girls and they have someone who suspiciously looks like Alex with them.”

The three boys lifted themselves from where they had been leaning on the van and took a couple of steps towards their returning friends. Despite all their chat and banter the fact remained that little, if anything, could prepare them for something like this. Striding towards them as though it was the most natural thing in the world to do was their friend who they all believed they had lost eighteen months previous. He looked good. In fact he looked better than good, he looked great. None of them knew exactly what to expect, even Michael who had glimpsed him momentarily the day before was surprised how well he looked.

It turned out to be a combination of things. Firstly, he simply looked well. If there is one thing a long period in a hospital bed should give you it is a rest. Then there were the clothes that he was wearing. They were all aware that Isabel had picked up some things for Alex on the drive to Santa Fe so they shouldn’t have been surprised to see their friend looking so smart in his new clothes. Finally there was just his sheer presence. Not only did he look taller than he did the last time they had seen him but he looked a heavier build as well. He had always been a bit of a bean pole but it seemed he was moving on out of the awkward teen years and headlong towards his twenties and maturity.

It seemed that whatever the outcome of their earlier conversation Kyle had already made up his mind how he was going to greet Alex because as soon as he was within easy reach he sprang forward and enveloped his friend in an almighty hug. “It’s great to have you back man.” He stated as he stepped back, his voice betraying the emotion he clearly felt.

Alex hardly had time to register the meeting with his old friend before Max stepped forward, hand outstretched. Alex accepted it warmly and as he smiled at his friend he was slightly surprised to find himself pulled in close and wrapped in a hug by Max’s free arm. “I’m glad you’re safe.” Was all me managed to whisper to his friend before he stepped back.

Finally, Alex turned to Michael. He was unsure what to expect but he decided that any show of affection, no matter how small would be more than enough from his big friend. It seemed Michael had other ideas as he stepped forward and pulled Alex into a bear hug, almost lifting his returning friend off of the ground. Michael held onto his captive companion for the briefest moment before he let him go. However, he hadn’t quite finished yet. “You scared the shit out of me, don’t do it again!” He stated frankly to everyone’s surprise and amusement.

“Michael!” Maria yelled.

“What?” He barked back. “You told me I should be truthful and I am. He did scare the shit out of me!”

“That might be.” Maria countered. “But maybe next time you can choose your words a little more carefully.”

Michael looked at Alex pointedly. “You knew something’s would never change, didn’t you?”

Alex simply nodded. “Yes, I’m glad to say I did.” Alex turned to look at Maria with a loving smile. “You and Maria are the one constant in an ever-changing universe.”

“So how are you?” Max asked, hoping for a change in conversation.

“A whole lot better thanks to you guys.” Alex’s smile grew into a broad grin. “Anyway, more to the point, how are you and your new wife?” Alex watched as Liz moved to Max’s side and was soon wrapped in a long arm that pulled her close.

Liz glanced tenderly at Max before looking back at Alex. “We’re good, thanks for asking but we’re much happier still, which I didn’t think was possible, now that you are back. It’s like a dream.”

Suddenly Alex’s broad smile fell from his lips. “Speaking of dreams. I think I need to find a certain young lady so that I can spend the next week apologising.”

The boys all moved back, creating an opening in their ranks to reveal the van that stood behind them. As Alex focused his gaze on the inside of the van he thought he just saw the top of Isabel’s head duck down below the line of the window on the back seat.

“Will you all excuse me while I have a word with Isabel?” He asked sheepishly.

In unison everyone started to nod as Liz gestured back towards the hospital. “We’ll head for the cafeteria and give you guys some privacy.”

“We’ll see you in there when you are done.” Maria added. “We made a promise to Sarah so we can’t take you back until you are well fed.”

Alex nodded and smiled as he watched his friends turn and head across the street to the hospital. He turned back to face the camper van and let out a large exhale of breath as he steadied himself for the task at hand.

Slowly he moved around the van and found the side door open. He cautiously moved to the opening and glanced inside. His eyes were immediately drawn to the slumped figure that was squashed down on the back seat, almost hidden under a coat. He knew he had to take things slowly and make sure that he made Isabel understand what a complete fool he had been. This was not going to be easy.

Rather surprisingly he didn’t say anything. He simply turned and perched himself on the edge of the opening so he was actually sitting on the floor of the van with his feet sticking out of the side. He managed to get himself comfortable with his back leaning against the back of the front seats, which also allowed him to face the back of the van although Isabel was hidden by the middle seats due to where Alex was perched.

He thought about launching straight into an apology but he wasn’t in any kind of a rush. He was content to simply sit in the van knowing that just a foot or two away was the woman he held most dear. He actually hoped that Isabel wouldn’t say anything. His mind was already racing at a mile a minute and if Isabel spoke to him he would also have to contend with what he was going to say in return. He was relieved when they both remained silent. He realised that he could have sat like that for hours and if he thought he could have gotten away with it he would have, but he knew he couldn’t. Things weren’t going to get better just by sitting there. They had to speak to one another and that was all there was to it.

“I should start by saying I love you!” He suddenly stated.

There was a brief pause before Isabel lifted herself so she could look over the middle seat and look at Alex directly. “What?” She asked softly, her face showing a look of near disbelief.

“I said I love you.” He repeated. “I know I probably shouldn’t open with that but I have made such a terrible mess of things that I think I need all of the goodwill I can get and I think if you know from the start that I love you it might make what I am about to say easier to believe.”

“What you are about to say?” Isabel didn’t mean to keep going over what Alex was saying but she was scarcely prepared to speak to him in the first place but with an opening line of ‘I love you’ she wasn’t sure she could have told him her name if he had asked her, let alone form coherent sentences.

“Since I woke up from my coma I spent all my waking hours trying to guess what sort of guy I was and what sort of life I had been leading prior to my accident, all the time being thankful for simply being alive.” He began. “Then, from the very first moment I saw you standing over my bed yesterday, all I could think about was ‘Who is this beautiful woman that is visiting me and I hope and pray that she is part of my life’. When we connected and I started to see the flashes I also started to reconnect to my own memories and I remembered who you were and, more importantly, what you were to me, which is everything.” He glanced at her momentarily. “You are everything to me, Isabel.” He dropped his head. “Then I started to receive the flashes of your wedding and I realised I had lost you.”

“I’m sorry, Alex. I never…” Isabel was cut off when Alex held up a hand to stop her.

“Isabel, I’m not saying this to hurt you or make you feel guilty.” He continued. “I wanted to explain that the reason I said you broke my heart wasn’t so much that you got married, as hard as that might be for you to believe, it was that I had lost you. I thought you were gone forever.” Alex grimaced slightly when he thought about those feelings. “When I was speaking to Liz and Maria earlier they were using the same words like ‘gone forever’ and ‘heartbroken’ to me. It made me realise that we had been through the same emotions but for different reasons. I don’t judge you for marrying. If I had really been gone and I had the ability to look down on you from heaven I would have been truly happy that you had found happiness, or at the very least had tried to find happiness. I would never want you to cocoon yourself away and not be happy.”

“I never meant to hurt you.” She said softly as the tears started to run down her cheeks. “And I never forgot you. I know I didn’t show it outwardly but they were private thoughts meant only for you and me. You were on my mind every day and in my heart always.”

“I know.” Alex replied in equally hushed tones. “I wouldn’t doubt that for a second. I’m the only one who knows how much it took for you to open up to me because I am the only one who has connected to you and felt what you felt. I look at you now and I can still see it in your eyes just as I did the night of the Prom. I know this is a terrible admission and shows me to be a very shallow person but I couldn’t help but take heart when Liz told me you never told him about how special you are.”

Isabel shook her head slightly. “I knew how lucky I was to find you, someone who would accept me for who and what I am. I knew I could never find another you, there is only one Alex Whitman, so I tried to be everything he wanted me to be and in turn I buried who I really was, which with the benefit of hindsight was a mistake. He wasn’t a bad man, Alex. He just never knew what he was letting himself in for, which was very unfair. That and he wasn’t you.” She added.

Alex lifted himself from his seated position on the floor and sat down on the middle seat, sliding himself along until his back was against the side of the van. His right arm was now resting on the back of the seat as he glanced at Isabel to his right. “You look tired.” He smiled when he noticed Isabel starting to smile at his comment. “Not the most flattering thing I have ever said to you.” He joked. “I just mean you look like you could do with a rest.”

“I know.” Isabel nodded. “It’s been a long eighteen months and it just kept getting more and more difficult. The only one bright moment was when Max and Liz got married and that was only a few months ago. It’s been very hard going.”

Alex couldn’t help but notice that Isabel hadn’t referred to her own marriage as a ‘Bright moment’ but he wasn’t here to gloat or open old wounds so he decided to ignore it, for the time being. “Since we were together last night I have been trying to go over some of the flashes I saw.” Alex shook his head as he dropped his gaze. “Liz was right when she said it would take weeks if not months for me to get caught up.”

“Well at least you have you health now.” Isabel offered. “That gives you time to catch up.”

“Thanks to you.” Alex stated at he lifted his gaze and look directly at Isabel for the first time.

“We all played our part.” Isabel countered as she fought the need to blush. Inwardly Isabel was trying to stay composed and not just because he was making her blush. He was making her do everything. Her heart was pounding just at the sound of his voice. Her palms were sweating and her skin had goose bumps just at the nearness of his body to hers and that was nothing compared with her muddled brain that could barely manage a coherent comment she was so lost in his eyes.

“I’m sure everyone helped.” Alex agreed. “But I know it was you that called out to me on the dream plain. It was you that connected to my dream, once you had pulled me out of the coma and it was you that restored my memory. Did I miss anything?” He joked.

Isabel smiled. She was overjoyed at just being able to sit and have this conversation with him let alone anything else that may or may not happen. She suddenly felt her confidence coming back when it came to her closest companion. “I did buy you those clothes and if I do say so myself I have very good taste.”

Alex glanced down at his outfit. “I must admit that I am starting to warm to your ideas about what I should be wearing. No more plaid shirts or baggy jeans for me.”

“Well I tried to meet you halfway by buying clothes that I thought would be slightly baggy on you but you seemed to have…erm, you seem to have filled out a bit.” Isabel managed to stammer out as she felt herself blush for a second time.

“I think I am getting old.” Alex joked as he chose to ignore Isabel’s blushes. He didn’t want to make her feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. “I think I am going to seed!”

There was a prolonged pause and it became clear to Alex that Isabel was troubled by something.

“What is it, Iz?” He asked quietly. “You can say or ask anything, I don’t mind.”

Isabel had to force herself to ignore the fact that he had called her Iz and concentrate on his heartfelt concern for her. “I was wondering what you remember about Tess and what she did to you?” She asked nervously.

Alex frowned. “I’m not exactly sure. I’m still wading my way through my recovered memories as well as the multitude of flashes I picked up from you. From what I can make out Tess had me working on the translation, which you already know about. I then remember having a blazing argument with her when I think I began to realise she had been manipulating me.”

“That’s about as much as we were initially able to find out.” Isabel added.

“I have some fragmented images of me in a car, in the driver’s seat but I also remember stumbling through the bushes and falling down some kind of hillside or something similar, ending up in some dense undergrowth.” Alex scratched his head as he fought to remember. “I know they said they found me on the outskirts of the desert so I think I must have stumbled away in my dazed state.”

“So if Tess was looking to set it up like an accident why do you think she carried on with the plan if you managed to getaway? She must have stolen a body and set it up to be you. That or she mind warped the whole thing. It seems a lot of trouble to go to.” Isabel’s curiosity was getting the better of her even though she already knew Alex was only likely to know as much as she did.

Alex shrugged. “The one thing we now know for sure was she was looking to break up the group at any cost, her attempt to kill me was proof of that. It might have been that she only needed a temporary problem to cause the split. Don’t forget she was looking to speed off with Max in the Granolith, it wasn’t like she was looking to hang around to face the consequences of her actions. Plus we are talking about a desert here. If she couldn’t find me she was probably hoping that no one else would. The last thing she would have been expecting was for me to survive in the state that I was in, lost in one of the world’s harshest environments. The Doctor’s and Nurse’s have all made it clear I was very lucky to be found alive, let alone survive. In fact I would have been in a permanent coma if it wasn’t for you.”

Isabel shook her head. “I can’t believe this. If all that we thought we saw with Max trying to save you in the back of the coroners van was a mind warp, which it must have been, I no longer know what to believe. We were all there but it clearly didn’t happen. When it comes to Tess I no longer know what was real and what was a mind warp.” Isabel suddenly lifted her head to look at Alex. “How could she have made us see what she wanted to see without us knowing? She always had that annoying habit of scrunching up her face when she carried out a mind warp!”

“But whose to say that she needed to concentrate that hard to carry out a mind warp? It may have just been her way of getting us to think she was doing a mind warp when in reality she could have done one while reading a book and painting her toenails.” Alex reasoned. “After having heard you describe how she took care of all those skins I wouldn’t underestimate Tess’s true powers. She had spent an entire lifetime being trained and prepared for one thing and one thing only, getting Max at all costs.”

Alex slumped back and rested the back of his head on the window. “It’s possible we’ll never know the truth, we’re only guessing here. What we do know is that Tess was psychotic, had one purpose in life that she wanted to achieve at any cost and she didn’t care who got in her way. She was more powerful than any of us could have ever imagined and she could make us see and believe anything she wanted.” Alex shook his head. “I’m not sure we can believe anything she said or did. In fact that goes for us as well. She totally played us all from start to finish.”

“What about the baby she had with Max?” Isabel questioned.

“You tell me.” Alex countered. “I think she initially tried to split up the couples by making you and Michael dream about making out with each other and you being pregnant. When that didn’t work she tried to kill me to split the group. Her constant mind warps might have fried my brain but rather than try to help me or get Max to mend my problems she chose to kill me off, no doubt hoping to cause a rift between you and us. Finally, when nothing else worked, she had Max do something totally out of character and against everything we have seen him do previously. It contradicted everything Max was and is except in one pertinent aspect. If Max really did have a child with someone he wouldn’t abandon it. He would stand by the child and the mother, which I can only imagine is what Tess was counting on.”

“When you lay it all out like that it seems so obvious.” Isabel looked slightly shocked.

“Don’t forget, because of the type of people we all are we are likely to think the best of people not the worst. If Tess says she is pregnant we are likely to believe her rather than believe that she is capable of being so duplicitous and manipulative. Of course all that has now changed as we know she tried to kill me, which I find rather damning.”

“I only hope we are right.” Isabel admitted. “Max and Liz are truly happy but it hasn’t been easy on either of them, especially Liz. Their relationship has paid a heavy price for Tess’s involvement. They deserve to be happy and if we can prove that Max didn’t act in the way that Tess made out he did I know it will be a relief to both of them.”

“Maybe when we are further away from here and we have more time you can trying having a look around my mind, maybe find out some other interesting things about our Tess. That way we can find definitive proof but I have very little doubt as to her involvement. It’s the only thing that makes sense. I’m sure towards the end she had given up on hiding things from me she was so confident she could simply wipe it from my brain, which I don’t think was the case with the benefit of hindsight.” Alex offered.

Alex glanced at Isabel. When she didn’t say anything in reply he realised that she was unashamedly staring at him. “What’s wrong?” He asked.

She continued to look thoughtfully at him before she spoke. “You don’t blame us in the slightest, do you?”

Alex frowned. “Blame you for what?” He didn’t understand.

“If you had never met us you would be back in Roswell leading a normal life without all this heartache and trouble.” She explained. “In all this time you’ve never once thought about walking away from us, from me.” She added.

“You’re my friends.” He stated as though it was the most obvious thing in the world to say. “I could never leave any of you and especially not you. I told you, Isabel. I love you.”

Isabel held his gaze but she felt the tears well up and start to trickle down her cheeks. “What if I’m not good enough for you? What if it’s too dangerous to be with us? I couldn’t stand to see you hurt. I’ve lost you once and it nearly destroyed me and I couldn’t go through that again.”

“Then I strongly suggest you keep me close so you can make sure no harm comes to me because no matter what else happens I’m coming with you.” Alex stated resolutely.

“But what about Jesse? What about the marriage?” She asked nervously. “I couldn’t stand to see you hurt by me, you mean too much to me to allow that to happen. I don’t care what people think of me. I don’t even care what Max, Michael and the others think of me but you…I can’t have your eyes look at me filled with hatred and loathing, it would kill me.”

Alex turned in his seat so he was facing Isabel straight on. He reached out gently with one hand and wiped at the tears that trickled down her soft skin. “If you want to be with me that’s all there is to it. I know I want to be with you so it’s all down to you, you decide.”

Isabel paused for a moment as she dropped her gaze. Alex waited apprehensively for any sort of comment from Isabel. Finally, when she looked up through tear stained eyes he was surprised to see a smile on her face. “I want you so much it hurts. I wanted you before I lost you, I wanted you while I had lost you and now that you are back I want you more than ever.”

“That’s settled then.” Alex smiled broadly. “Sold to the tall, beautiful blond in the back seat.”

Isabel felt like shouting out she was so deliriously happy but when it finally dawned on her where she was actually sitting a mischievous grin slowly spread across her beautiful features.

“What?” Alex asked in confusion, and just a little panic.

“I’m not sure we have ever been in the back seat of a car before, Alex.” She state seductively.

Alex frowned. “I’m sure we’ve been in the back seat of a car before and…oh!” He suddenly realised what Isabel meant. He glanced around nervously. “What, here?”

“I only want to kiss you, Alex. It’s not like I am going to eat you.” Her throaty voice was sending shivers down his spine.

“Is there…is there room back there for me?” He stammered.

“I’ll make room for you.” She purred. “And if there isn’t, I’ll sit on your lap.”

Alex slowly lifted himself and climbed into the back seat. No sooner had he sat down when he felt Isabel entwine herself around him. “I’ve dreamt of this since the eighth grade.” Alex admitted breathlessly.

“I know.” Isabel replied as she started to bury her face in his neck.

Alex flushed furiously. “Oh God!” He exclaimed. “You’re seen my dreams!”

“I have.” Isabel admitted. “But if it helps I haven’t seen any that I disapprove of.”

Alex honestly thought he was going to pass out. He soon realised that Isabel was doing all of the interacting while he simply sat there and that was what was driving him wild so a counteroffensive was called for, just to even the score.

He pulled himself back slightly in the seat to look at Isabel. If he didn’t know better he would have thought she looked slightly disappointed. “I think it is only fair to warn you that I am going to kiss you.”

Isabel lifted her eyebrows in surprise and amusement. “Only fair to warn me?” She repeated.

Alex nodded. “I wanted to do this the day after the Prom but I never got the chance so I have been storing it up for eighteen months. I thought it was only fair to warn you.”

“Thank you, Alex. That’s very kind of you to warn me and I appreciate it but I think it is only fair to warn you.” Isabel reached up and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt. “We need to undo that button and make sure there are no restrictions on your breathing. By the time I have finished with you, you are going to need to be able to breath through your ears you’ll be so desperate for oxygen.”

“You are aware that we are still in the parking lot and anyone can see us?” Alex questioned nervously.

Isabel lifted a hand and placed it on the inside of the van. Instantly all the windows went black. She then threw out her other hand and the side door slid shut. Finally, with a wave of the same hand Alex heard all of the doors lock. “Happy?” She queried with a smile.

Alex simply nodded. “You will be gently with me, won’t you? I’ve just come out of hospital!”

“Don’t worry, Alex.” She stated seductively as she pulled him towards her. “I can pretend I am a nurse and look after you. If it will help I can make myself a uniform?” She joked, alluringly.

After that comment Alex really was convinced he was going to pass out.

“I love you, Alex Whitman.” Isabel suddenly stated firmly.

Those were the words Alex had wanted to hear more than any others but now that Isabel had said them he didn’t know what to do in return. “I don’t know what to say!” He replied, his honesty appearing at the most inopportune moment.

“Just tell me you know.” Isabel said with a smile, their faces a mere fraction apart. “All I ever want to hear from you is that you know I love you.”

Alex looked deep into Isabel’s beautiful brown eyes. “I know.” He whispered. He had never said anything with more certainty or convict in his entire life.

And with that, they kissed. Passionately!
