Part 3
Kyle-
So I’m sitting here at the Crash Down waiting for Isabel to come and meet me. Yep, Kyle J. Valenti is going to a 4th of July picnic. When she asked me the other day I just couldn’t refuse those big, brown eyes of hers. Yeah, call me whipped. It’s OK - I kinda like it. Isabel and I have become so close, in lots of ways. She means more to me then I thought possible but…I’m just worried that the bubble is going to burst soon. I can feel it even though nothing “alien” has happened lately and everyone else has been enjoying the summer. Isabel and I spend a lot of our time alone. Max, Michael, Liz and Maria don’t seem to mind. They’re all into themselves, and Isabel and I are happy for them. Geez, even in my thoughts I’m friggin’ speaking for both of us. Sometimes I don’t know where I stop and she begins.
To tell the truth, though, I’m a little worried about going to this picnic. Her mom, dad, Max and Liz are going too. It’s not like they haven’t seen us together but I have this insane fear that her father is going to walk up to me and say “so you’ve had your hands on my daughter?” What the hell am I going to say? Oh, and the hands thing is another thing I can’t stop thinking about - Isabel and I have not taken that step into actually “consummating” our relationship, if you know what I mean, but we sure have done everything else. I can see the disappointment in her eyes sometimes when I stop, but I have to - she’s not ready, and maybe I’m not either. Even though I know she loves me I’m so worried that once we take that final step, she will be wishing it was someone else…Alex. That’s another problem I can’t seem to get over. Alex was my friend, and even though he’s not here sometimes I feel like Isabel is cheating on him. It’s stupid I know and I keep telling myself that he would want one thing for her and that’s for her to be happy. And I seem to make her happy. Yeah, and she makes me happy too. Damn! I sound sappy. That Max must be rubbing off on me…
“Kyle?” Maria’s voice drips with frustration.
“Huh?” Kyle says as he snaps out of his thoughts.
“Do you want something to drink while you wait for Isabel?” she asks again.
“Oh, yes a coke…sorry I was lost in thought,” he replies somewhat dreamily.
“That’s alright, jock boy, I do that sometimes too, and your coke is coming right up!” Maria says in her best “Auntie Maria understands” voice and pats his hand.
As Maria walks over behind the counter to get Kyle’s drink, she can’t stop looking at him.
“Liz, what do you think is going on with Kyle and Isabel?” Maria asks Liz point blank, interrupting her friend’s important sugar jar replenishing. Liz glances over at Kyle and twists up her face as she studies his body language.
“I think they have become very close…why?” Liz says with a sigh.
“I feel something more is going on with them than we think. He seems to be “lost in thought” a lot lately, which usually means one thing…love,” states Maria with certainty.
Liz looks back over at Kyle again just as Isabel walks through the Crash Down doorway and both waitresses proceed to watch as Isabel walks up to Kyle’s booth and slides in across from him. Kyle’s face immediately lights up as he reaches across the table to take Isabel’s hands.
“We-ell they’re definitely ‘close.’ Maybe they
are just being good friends, you know being there for each other and all that,” Maria says, still looking at the couple with a doubtful expression on her face.
“Well, I’m going to be at the picnic with them so I can watch for any signs of wanton behavior,” Liz replies with a giggle.
“Haha!” Then Maria’s voice switches to a softer tone, “Liz, I just want to keep an eye on Isabel…she’s lost…so much…and he would want us to watch out for her.”
“I know, Maria” Liz says sadly, thinking of Alex, “but would it be so bad if she was with Kyle? He’s a great guy and you know it. Plus, they have a lot in common, a lot more in common than he and I ever did,” she adds.
“Pfft! You just wanted to go out with a hot jock boy! And now you have a hot alien,” Maria answers teasingly.
Liz just laughs and smacks her friend lightly before grabbing her checks to go total them up. Maria starts to walk over to the booth with Kyle’s coke. As she gets close to the table she notices that they’re still holding hands. Her eyes bug out as she thinks,
“Just friends, my ass!” Kyle is rubbing his thumb lightly across the top of one of Isabel’s hands while they chat away, completely off in their own little world. “Yep, I knew it. They are soooooo into each other,” Maria whispers under her breath as she tries to hide her smirk.
Isabel-
How hard is it to find something to wear to a picnic? I’m being such a typical girl and thinking to myself, he’s seen me in everything! I need to find something new to wear. Not that Kyle would care - he’s not the kind of guy who notices things I wear or how I wear my hair…
Wow, I just realized something. Lately I’ve been trying so hard not to compare Alex and Kyle but I just found something different - Alex always knew if something was different with how I wore my clothes or my hair. Of course that was important to me at the time and he would have known that. But now in the grand scheme of things it just doesn’t seem important.
*Sigh*
Alex. Now when I think about him (which is still about every twenty seconds) I feel a calm I didn’t feel before. I have to wonder if he’s looking down on me and sending me the good feelings he always gave me when he was here. I still miss him so much it hurts, but the hurt is a dull ache now. Kyle and I talk a lot about him and I think that helps. We promised once we decided to be together that we would talk about anything and everything. For me, Alex is still a big part of that.
But the one thing we
can’t seem to talk about is something I just can’t ignore…
At first I thought maybe Kyle just didn’t want to go there with me because that would mean he had to have some sort of attachment to me. But that is clearly not the case. I mean, he must be attached or why would he still be hanging around? Plus, I mean, hello, he is an eighteen year old man, and I can tell he has no problem being “with” me, but he always pulls back before...
Now to be honest I’m not sure I’m ready. I have only had one experience to go by and well, we didn’t get to even really talk about it before he was gone. I admit I haven’t had the nerve to tell Kyle that Alex and I made love. I’m just so worried he will be upset. I think I really do need to explain to Kyle what happened so I can make him understand that even if I could go back I would never change what happened between Alex and I. It’s a memory I will never give up, and it changed my life and for that and so much more I will always love Alex.
But I feel less and less guilty about being with Kyle. He’s such a wonderful guy. And I think I can have room in my heart for two people, can’t I? It’s not like we’re going to run off and get married or anything. We’re only eighteen and still have another year of high school. I CAN see a future with Kyle but sometimes I fear that we will always have these ghosts hanging over us.
I can’t stop myself from thinking about everything. I guess I need to just sit down with Kyle and explain things. Maybe it will help. I suspect that he’s got stuff on his mind that he’s not telling me as well. Like, I know he’s worried about how my brothers will react to us being together. But if we stand our ground we should be fine, right? They’re all happy, why can’t we be too?
OK, take a deep breath. Walking into the Crash Down. This is normal. There he is! God, looking at his face makes everything just melt away….
4th of July Picnic
Isabel and Kyle drive up to the park, Kyle turns off the car and sits for a minute looking out the window. He was quiet for most of the ride but not in a mad way, Isabel thinks, more like thoughtful or something.
“Kyle, are you OK?” she asks.
“Yeah Iz, I’m fine. I just seem to be lost in my own thoughts today…so are you ready for this?” he questions her with a sudden (slightly forced) smile.
“Ready for what? To see the same people we do everyday, except with BBQ and all the fixins?” she answers with a grin to show that she knows
exactly what he’s talking about.
“Yeah, you know the whole your dad working a grill thing is kinda scary,” he pauses before continuing, “but you know what I mean - they
are bound to notice that you can’t keep your hands off me. And most ‘friends’ don’t act like that, not even close ones.”
“ME? Alright smart ass, we’ll just see who keeps their hands to themselves. I’m always up for a challenge…but just remember this,” Isabel says, leaning oh-so-very close to his face and placing her hand on his upper thigh, “WE don’t care what they think. WE know what we’re doing and no one should have a say but us!” She tops this off with a lingering kiss on his lips, knowing exactly what effect it’ll have on him.
“OHHH!! Has anyone ever told you that you’re an evil woman?” Kyle exclaims on his way out of the car.
“Yes, actually I have been told that. But I refuse to believe it,” Isabel answers with a teasing grin and a toss of her hair as she quickly exits the car and struts to where her parents are waiting.
“Hey dad,” Isabel says to her father as she taps him on the shoulder to get his attention.
“Oh hello, Isabel, Kyle…I was just telling my new colleague here about Roswell. Have I introduced you to Jesse Ramirez yet?” Philip asks jovially.
“I don’t think I have had the pleasure yet, although I have heard a lot about you and your brother,” Jesse replies as he reaches out to shake Isabel’s hand.
“Ah yes, dad mentioned you, nice to meet you…this is Kyle,” Isabel states, trying to hide her nerves.
“Well hi, nice to meet ya,” Kyle says, reaching out to shake Jesse’s hand.
It’s clear to Kyle that Jesse can’t seem to take his eyes off of Isabel. She hasn’t noticed yet because she’s busy talking to her dad, but Kyle can’t help but watch as Jesse looks her up and down with obvious admiration.
“Come on Iz, I see Max and Liz pulling up. I think Max said he might need some help unloading the car,” Kyle says quickly, pulling Isabel away.
A somewhat bewildered Isabel follows, calling out behind her, “sorry dad, we’ll be back in a minute.”
“Kyle, what is your problem?!” Isabel asks after they’ve taken enough steps as to be out of earshot.
Kyle continues to urge her towards the parking area but not towards Max and Liz.
“Kyle, I’m stopping right now and not going any further until you tell me what the hell is wrong,” she insists with that tone in her voice that can’t be ignored by any man, human or alien.
Staring into the confusion on her face, Kyle feels something he hasn’t felt since he first saw Max with Liz together - jealousy.
“Isabel, I’m sorry but I had to walk away for a second…” he stutters frantically.
Isabel looks at him with wonder. His face is red and he looked angry and embarrassed.
“Kyle, what’s got you so upset? I don’t get it. We were just talking to my dad and that guy Jesse.” As soon as she says Jesse’s name, Kyle’s eyes light up with barely concealed frustration. “Is it Jesse?” she asks softly. “I don’t even know him. You heard my dad - we just met…” Isabel says in an attempt to soothe him.
“Oh Iz, you did nothing wrong…I’m sorry. I’m just being a guy and he was checking you out and I sorta…panicked,” Kyle says in a softer voice, feeling foolish.
Isabel walks forward and proceeds to grab both of his hands, forcing him to look into her eyes.
“Kyle, I love you. Jealously is normal, and don’t think I haven’t felt the same way when all those girls check you out but you have
nothing to worry about,” she punctuates this by squeezing his hands.
Kyle relaxes visibly and smiles at her and squeezes her hands back, “yeah, the only thing is - girls can’t help but check me out. Have you checked me out lately?” he jokes in an attempt to make her smile again.
Isabel just smacks him lightly and gratifies him by laughing. She starts to pull him back towards where her brother and Liz are now standing with her parents.
“Isabel, I love you too,” Kyle says, turning serious all of a sudden and giving her hand a soft tug.
When she flips around to face him she has to stop herself from tearing up. But instead she just smiles softly, knowing how hard it is for him to say those words, and her silence tells him everything he needs to know.
They begin to walk slowly together, hoping for an uneventful and moderately pleasant day, neither of them realizing that they have had an audience to their heartfelt exchange. Liz saw it all.
“Maria was right!” Liz thinks to herself in shock. “Now what is Max going to think?”
she muses as she runs back to meet her boyfriend by the car.
Later…still at the Picnic
After everyone had eaten, it was easy enough to decide to play a game of football but splitting the teams was becoming a bit of a fiasco. Kyle didn’t particularly want Isabel on Jesse’s team but he
really didn’t want “tall, dark and legal” to have the opportunity to tackle her either. Luckily he and Max were team captains. Kyle decided not to choose Jesse for his own team knowing that Max would choose his sister and also be stuck with Jesse. After choosing, they split up to plan before the game gets started. Now that the plotting and scheming, er, strategy is over, Kyle places himself in front of Isabel to block her. With a knowing grin on his face he leans down and waits for Max to yell “hike.”
“You can wipe that smile of your face Kyle - you have to catch me to tackle me, and that’s SO not going to happen,” Isabel tells him, smirking all the while.
“Oh but it’ll be fun trying at the very least and my varsity letter tells me I can catch you,” he tosses off smugly.
The sound of Max’s voice yelling “hike” bursts through the air and everyone takes off - Isabel runs so Max that can throw her the ball with Kyle right on her heels. He waits until she’s far enough out field and then he drives for her. Tumbling to the ground he’s on top of her with her face down in the grass before she can even catch her breath.
“Kyle! You can’t tackle me unless I have the ball!” she yells incredulously.
“Hey, I can tackle you if I want. Besides I really thought he threw you the ball,” He answers with mock innocence.
“Right, sure you did…are you going to let me up? We ARE playing a game here - something I’d think you’d appreciate, jock boy,” Isabel points out, slightly perturbed at Kyle’s behavior.
“Sure, sure, I’ll let you up,” Kyle says as he starts to get up himself. At which point, Isabel takes the opportunity to pounce on him and throw him to the ground before straddling him and holding his hands up above his head.
“Next time play by the rules, Mister - or else!” she teases.
“Or else what?” Kyle says with a tilt of the eyebrow as he attempts to buck up towards her.
Isabel’s expression changes from teasing to shock when she feels Kyle’s desire. Looking down at him and seeing his smirk, she realizes he has positioned them this way on purpose. She lifts herself up a little and comes back down, watching his face lose its smirk.
“So you want to do this with my dad and everyone watching? I mean, I am old enough, what can they do…but I didn’t think THIS was how we were going to tell everyone. And from what I can feel you’re going to have to figure out how to get up…off the ground,” Isabel says, looking him straight in the eye.
Kyle shudders knowing that everyone can see them and are probably wondering what on earth is going on.
“Great Valenti, just great, think with your dick and see what happens,”Kyle groans inwardly.
Isabel gets up and holds her hand out to help him off of the ground. He takes it and then brushes himself off and as calmly as possible starts to walk back toward the others.
The game goes pretty good after that. Kyle does his best to keep his hands to himself. His team loses to Max’s team but it was pretty close: 14 to 13. Of course Isabel is thrilled and when the final touch down is made, her entire team goes wild as well. Jesse takes this opportunity to approach Isabel and hug her in “sportmanlike camaraderie.” He’s on the winning team too after all. But Isabel stiffens as soon as Jesse’s arms go around her. She searches for Kyle with her eyes and when she finds them she smiles at him in reassurance.
“Isabel, I was wondering if you would like to go out to lunch some time?” Jesse inquires cluelessly after pulling away from the hug.
“Oh Jesse, that’s really sweet of you but I’m seeing someone, and it’s pretty serious,” she answers politely, getting a secret thrill out of saying the truth out loud for the first time to anyone but Kyle.
“OK then. Not surprising but figured it didn’t hurt to ask. Well, if you ever change your mind, you know where I work.” Jesse answers back with a gentlemanly wink before walking off to leave Isabel standing alone and gazing at Kyle.
Liz stands off to the side waiting for the congratulations to end, and by chance once again overhears the conversation. As she walks over to Isabel, she catches the exchanged glances between Kyle and Isabel but Kyle looks away when he realizes that Liz is watching. Abruptly he begins to gather the remaining football gear still lying out on the field.
“Isabel, that was a great game,” Liz says when she gets close to the other girl, who is, Liz can’t help but notice, still staring at Kyle.
“He’s a great guy. I really hope you know you deserve to be happy…” Liz pauses for a moment and grabs Isabel’s hand,
“He would want you to be happy also.”
Isabel is taken back by Liz’s words at first but then a radiant smile breaks out over her face and she turns to look over at Kyle once again.
“We really are good together,” she thinks to herself in wonder.
