Part 31
Liz groaned the next morning when the alarm clock went off. She felt something warm and hard move against her back and smiled when she remembered that Max was in bed with her. They hadn’t had a very late night the night before but she was still tired from their activities. After their shower and another hot round of sex, Isabel had come home. Surprisingly to both Max and Liz she was in better spirits than they had expected and had gone straight to her room to call Alex.
“Morning” Max whispered huskily his hand reaching up from her waist to cup a breast.
“Hmm morning to you too” she replied before rolling over and kissing him.
The kiss quickly turned to something more and soon Liz found herself pressed against the bed as Max slipped into her welcoming depths.
“Yes” he whispered in her ear.
“Oh god you feel so good” she whispered back as he pumped in and out of her body.
“You too baby” he replied.
It didn’t take long till Max was blowing his load deep inside of Liz and he smothered her mouth in a passionate kiss as she came around him, in an attempt to drown out her cry.
“I don’t want to get out of this bed,” Liz cried when they came down from their high.
Max chuckled “I know the feeling” he agreed. He could stay in bed all day with Liz. “But I have to go to work” he groaned as he rolled off her.
“I know” she smiled reaching over to push his sweaty hair of his forehead.
“Why don’t you grab a shower first?” Liz suggested.
“You’re not joining me?” he asked.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Isabel is probably up” she told him.
“Ah” he chuckled “ok I’ll be quick,” he promised.
Whilst Max was in the shower Liz went downstairs to start some coffee and breakfast for them and as she suspected Isabel was already at the table reading the morning paper whilst she ate her cereal.
“Morning” she greeted.
“Morning Liz” Isabel grinned over the top of her paper. “Alex said he’ll ring you tonight, he didn’t want to interrupt your night with Max” she informed her.
“Oh great” Liz grinned looking forward to it.
Ten minutes later she took some coffee, scrambled eggs, fruit and toast up to her bedroom on a tray.
“What’s this?” Max asked surprised when he walked out of the bathroom dressed in a pair of crisp gray slacks and a black dressed shirt.
“Breakfast” she told him licking her lips, but it wasn’t over the breakfast it was over how good Max looked.
“Well lets eat before it goes cold” he smiled sitting on the bed and pulling Liz into his lap. They hand fed each other breakfast until every last bite of it was gone.
“That was so great” he told Liz as he suckled on her neck.
“I’m glad you liked it” she smiled.
Max looked at the clock then and sighed, it was already eight o’clock and he needed to head to work. “Go” she whispered “I’ll see you at lunch”
“Don’t you want a lift?” he asked.
“No I’ll walk with Isabel, besides I’m starting at nine these days” she told him with a smirk.
He left with one last goodbye kiss leaving Liz to get ready for work herself.
“Ok” she said facing her cupboard “I have to find an outfit that’s going to knock the socks off Max and his dad” she smirked.
***
“Can I help you?” the waiter asked as Liz walked into the restaurant that she was meeting Max and his father at for their meeting.
“I’m here to meet Max Evans” Liz replied.
“Certainly” he replied “the Evans party are already seated and waiting for you” he informed her.
Liz looked at her watch, it was still a few minutes to one so she wasn’t late but she wondered how long Max and his father had been waiting. As they approached the table she could see Max talking to an older gentleman with gray hair. Liz could tell right away from his similarities to Max that it was Phillip Evans and she suddenly was feeling nervous.
This wasn’t just about a job offer anymore this was meeting Max’s dad. What if he didn’t like her? Would Max break up with her.
She took a deep breath as they reached the table and felt her nerves fade away when Max looked up and grinned at her.
“Hi” she greeted.
Max and Phillip both stood up “Hi Liz” Max smiled. He wanted to lean over and kiss her so badly but he held himself back. Like he told Liz he really wanted to keep this professional.
The waiter left then “Dad this is Liz Parker, Liz this is my father and the founder of Evans and Associates Phillip Evans’ he introduced.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Evans” Liz said offering her hand to shake.
Phillip grinned at the beautiful women in front of him. He could see why his son was so far gone on her. “No the pleasure is mine Liz and please call me Phillip” he said.
He looked at his son then who was staring at her lovingly “is that anyway to greet your girlfriend Maxwell?” he asked with an arched eyebrow.
Max looked at his father a little shocked “Um no, no its not” he said. He wasn’t going to tell his father that it had only been that morning that he had seen her; he stepped around the table and kissed her gently on the lips.
“Hi” he whispered when he pulled back.
“Hi yourself” Liz blushed.
Phillip watched in amusement. It seemed that Liz was as into his son as he was which was very good.
“So Liz” Phillip started after Max had held her seat out for her and helped her sit down “tell me a little about yourself?”
“Well I’m from Roswell New Mexico but I moved to New York to attend law school. I graduated with honors and have been working with Matheson and Tate now for over three years” she told him. “Mostly divorce but I have had some experience in family and business,” she added.
Phillip nodded, he was studying Liz very closely “How many clients do you have?” he asked.
“I had 20 major clients last year Phillip” she said “18 of which will follow me to Evans”
Phillip smiled impressed “Can I ask what made you decide to lave Matheson and Tate?” he wondered.
“Truthfully?” Liz asked. She knew all these old way lawyers new each other somehow.
“Of course” he smiled.
“I was sick of working in an organization where having a dick meant more that the amount of cases you won or the money you made,” she said bluntly.
“Ahh” Phillip smirked “yeah I could see where that would be a problem” he told her.
“It wasn’t at first but when you aren’t even considered for partner when you make more money for the firm than most of the men promoted above you it tends to start to annoy you after a while” she said.
Max sat next to his father and listed to Liz quietly. He knew all this already but he was impressed with the way Liz was handling herself.
“So what would you want from Evans and Associates?” he asked her then.
Liz thought about the question carefully before answering. “Well I would definitely want to know that there was room for me to move, that I have a chance of being considered partner or I think we would be both wasting each others time” she said.
“And money?” he asked.
“Money isn’t everything,” Liz told him seriously.
“No of course not” he agreed
“The truth is Phillip I could really help put Evans and Associates on the map as a divorce firm. I have the experience and reputation to do that and I think we both know that, given the right team and recourses in six months you would have covered any salary you paid me” she said.
Phillip looked at his son and smirked “where did you find her Max?” he asked.
Max laughed too “um actually Dad, Liz lives with Isabel” he told him.
Phillip’s eyes lit up at the mention of his daughter “Really you’re that Liz?” he asked.
“Yep” she said.
“Liz as you know, Evans and Associates is run by Max he’s the senior partner. I’m retired but I still sit on the board of partners and ultimately I don’t like telling Max how to conduct business. However, I am impressed that Max thought it wise to consult me and some of the partners about this before hand though. Obviously your relationship with Max wont stay a secret for long and regardless of how you got this job people are always going to say it’s because your sleeping with my son, are you prepared for that?” he asked.
“I think my work will speak for itself,” she said with a small smile.
Phillip smiled at her again “well I think there isn’t any other decision left to be made Liz. I’ll let you and Max work out the details of your contract but welcome to the team,” he told her.
Liz grinned brilliantly “thank you Phillip” she said.
After lunch was finished Phillip bid his goodbyes telling Liz he hoped to see her soon before leaving Liz and Max to grit out the details.
“So…” Liz said nervously.
“You did great” he told her taking her hand in his own.
“Thank you” she smiled. He had no idea what that meant to her.
Max reached down and removed something from his briefcase then and placed it on the table in front of Liz then.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“A contract” he smirked.
Liz eyes went wide “but how did you know?” she wondered how he knew she would impress his father.
“It’s you” he winked at her.
“Max” she whispered.
“Ok” he said pulling his eyes away from hers before he started to act inappropriate in a crowded restaurant “here’s the deal” he said.
“125 thousand a year plus 2% bonus on all cases won,” he told her.
“Um wow” Liz said that was a lot more than she currently earned.
Max smiled “you’ll have an office, an assistant which you can hire yourself, and I would like you to consider taking one of the juniors under your wing” he said.
“Of course” she said eagerly.
“As the work grows we’ll set up a team underneath you” he told her.
“Um wow,” she whispered.
“And a car” he added then.
“What!” Liz gasped “on top of all that?” she said.
Max chuckled “Liz if you went to the market you could probably get more than this” he told her. “But the car is a personal add on because I want to know my most treasured possession is safe when traveling to and from work” he whispered.
“Max” she said her eyes filling with tears at his beautiful words.
“And I’ll take you shopping for that” he added with a playful smirk.
When he could see that Liz was getting emotional he cleared his throat before getting back to business. Now wasn’t the place for all this “as for promotion there is definite potential. We’re expecting a few of the partners to retire at the end of this year and you’ll be considered as fairly as any male” he told her “and we’ll review every year” he added.
Liz nodded “Ok” she agreed.
“Ok?” he asked hopeful. God he wanted her to come to work with him so badly.
“Yep” she grinned. “I’ll look this over and as long as it’s right I’ll sign it and get it back to you”
“I’ll pick it up personally,” he whispered leaning over and kissing her cheek.

Part 32
Maria was nervous as hell as she dressed for her date with Michael. “No its not a date” she reminded herself. But if that was the case than why did she have butterflies in her stomach? She hadn’t felt that way since her and Liz had started their relationship.
At least ten times today she had picked up the phone intent on calling Michael and canceling but every excuse she came up with sounded weak, even to her own ears. So here she was in a pair of tight jeans and a nice top waiting for him to come and pick her up.
Deciding that she needed someone to talk someone Maria had told Alex all about the non-date when he called on Wednesday night.
“So it’s not a date?” he asked.
“No” Maria said.
“Then I’m a little confused about what the problem is?” he told her. Maria was a complex person Alex knew that but normally he didn’t have to deal with these types of issues with her and he was a little confused about what to say.
“Well maybe he thinks it is and that he stands a chance and he doesn’t,” she told him.
“Did you tell him it was a date?” Alex asked.
“No I specifically told him it wasn’t a date,” she said.
“Then just go and have fun. Don’t stress about it,” he told her.
“You make it sound so easy” she said to Alex.
“Well if you really only want to be his friend Maria then it should be,” Alex told her.
Alex’s words still rung in his ears and she wondered if he was right. Was she really placing herself in a situation where she could feel something for Michael more than friends?
The sound of someone knocking on her door brought her out of her thoughts and she quickly gathered her purse and greeted Michael at the door. They grabbed something to eat at a café near by the concert hall before attending the show.
Maria had been shocked that she was going to see one of her favorite all time bands Three Doors Down and the tickets that Michael had turned out to be some of the best.
“Wow” she breathed out when they walked out of the auditorium three hours later.
Michael chuckled “So you enjoyed it?” he asked hopefully.
Although Maria had made it clear that his wasn’t a date Michael couldn’t help but hope that it could lead to a date. There was something about the blonde pixie that intrigued him. Normally he would never put so much effort into getting a chick to go out with him, he wasn’t sure what it was about Maria that was different but she made him want to try.
“Yes it was wonderful, thank you for inviting me” she smiled up at him. She had really had the best time tonight, she couldn’t remember the last time she had enjoyed herself so much.
“You’re welcome” he smiled back. They were on their way back to where his car was but Michael didn’t want the night to end.
“Did you want to grab a coffee?” he asked.
“Sure” Maria smiled even surprising herself.
They went back to the café that they had dinner at and both ordered a coffee “that was really great” Maria grinned.
“Yeah they’re awesome live,” he agreed.
“What’s your favorite song?” she asked then.
“Here with me” he said.
Maria grinned “me too” she said.
The waitress delivered their coffees then and they sipped on them in silence “So I’m really glad you came tonight” he told her.
Maria looked at him and smiled slightly “yeah well I picked up the phone a few times to cancel” she admitted.
“Really? Why?” he asked he wasn’t surprised but he wondered what had stopped her.
Maria chuckled nervously “I don’t do this type of stuff” she said.
“And what type of stuff is this?” he asked amused.
Maria blushed again when she realized what she said “Date?” he asked her.
“Is that what this is? Because I distinctively remember saying that this wasn’t a date,” she said.
“Ok well maybe it isn’t a date this time” he agreed with a smug smile.
Maria looked up at him startled and gulped “this time?” she said.
“Yeah” he grinned at her sitting back further in his seat. He felt his confidence soaring; he was breaking down her defenses.
When she didn’t respond he persisted with his questions “so why didn’t you ring and cancel?” he asked.
Maria quirked her head to the side and thought about his question “I don’t know” she admitted.
“Well for the record I’m glad you didn’t” he said.
“Me too” she whispered before letting her gaze drop back to the coffee in her hands.
***
Isabel threw the file down in frustration and pressed the intercom so she could talk to her secretary. She took a deep breath before she spoke “Miranda where’s the Thompson file?” she asked.
When there was no response she pressed it again “Miranda?” she snapped. The intercom only crackled back at her, laughing at her.
“What the hell?” she said before storming out of her office to find her secretary intending on giving her an earful but when she opened the door the office was empty and dark. Isabel looked at her watch then and realized that it past eight o’clock.
“Shit” she said.
She slumped down in her seat and resisted the urge to cry. Was this what her life was reduced to now? Before Alex she would be gone from the office before 4 on a Friday always having plans for the weekend. She couldn’t believe how much she missed him, it had been two days but god did she miss him.
Pushing aside her loneliness she packed up her things and headed downstairs where she hailed a cab and headed home.
***
“So how is she doing really?” Alex asked Liz. When Alex has spoken to her on the phone the day before she had seemed okay but he wasn’t buying it. He also wanted to know if she was missing him half as much as he was missing her.
Liz sighed “I don’t know Alex I’ve barely seen her since Wednesday” Liz admitted. She had a lot going on in her life but she was determined to be a better friend tonight to Isabel, which is why she had told Max that she couldn’t spend the night with him and was waiting at home for Isabel.
“What about you, how are you?” Liz asked Alex.
“Yeah you know” he replied.
“No I don’t know why don’t you tell me?” she asked.
“I didn’t realise how much I despised Boston” he replied and Liz laughed.
“So you said you had a plan what is it?” she asked.
“I need you to give me any information about Isabel’s plans to visit,” he said.
“Ok, why don’t you just ask her?” Liz asked confused.
“Because it might give away my plan,” he said.
“And what’s that?” Liz asked curious.
Alex sighed, “I resigned yesterday” he said “I gave two weeks notice at work and to my landlord. I’m surrounded by boxers as we speak”
“Alex” Liz gasped.
‘I know completely impulsive hey?” he chuckled.
“No I’m just shocked,” she said “that you actually took my advice,” she said.
“It was good advice so remember that when I’m trying to convince Isabel that I didn’t screw up my life for her when I show up on your doorstep” she said.
“Of course, so what are you going to do about a job?” she wondered.
“Actually I’ve already emailed my resume off to some of the tops companies in New York,” he admitted.
“Well that’s promising,” she told him.
“Yeah it is” he smiled back “So does that mean you’ll help me?” he asked.
“Of course” she replied.
At the moment Liz heard the front door open and look up just in time to see Isabel slam it behind her.
“Is that Isabel?” he asked concerned hearing the door slamming.
“Um yeah look I’m going to go,” she said. Liz didn’t want to concern Alex but Isabel didn’t seem like she was in a very good mood.
“Ok” he agreed “tell her that I’ll call her later” he said.
“Sure. Bye Alex”
“Bye Lizzie”
Liz hung up the phone and quickly followed Isabel up the stairs.
“Hey” she said poking her head in her bedroom.
Isabel looked up surprised “Hi” she replied. “What are you doing home?” she asked her.
“I was actually waiting for you,” she admitted.
“Me, why?” she wondered.
“Well I thought we could do something tonight” Liz smiled. It seemed like she had been right too. But the looks of Isabel flustered appearance and the tired circles under her eyes that she wasn’t doing as well as she would like.
“Thanks Liz but you really shouldn’t worry about me,” she said. “I’m sure you would prefer to spend your time with Max”
“Well I do and besides it’s been ages since we did something” Liz replied. “Besides Max had some work to do at the office,” she added, that wasn’t exactly the truth. Max had decided to stay at the office and work late when she had told him her plans to do something with Isabel.
Isabel looked at her then “what did you have in mind?” she asked. Isabel wouldn’t admit it but she was so glad that Liz was here right now; maybe she could get through her first Friday night without Alex. She wondered when she became one of those women who didn’t think she could survive without their boyfriend? That’s right it was when Alex Whitman walked into her life and swept her off her feet.
“Well we could catch a movie or hit a club,” she suggested.
Isabel contemplated her options “how about a movie I’m too tired to dance the wee hours away”
“Sounds great I’ll go get ready and we can head out” Liz smiled happy that she had convinced her.
“Liz” Isabel called out before Liz could leave.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks” she smiled.
“Your welcome” she told her.

Part 33
Maria tapped her pen on the bench in boredom. It has been so slow today with hardly anyone entering the small music shop she worked at. She was just about to go crazy when the front door opened the door jingled indicating that someone had entered.
“M-Michael?” she said surprised as she watched him approach the counter with a smile.
“Hey” he said, “is this a bad time?” he asked casting a casual look around the music shop.
Maria laughed “are you serious?” she said, “The place is dead”
“Well then I picked a good time then” he chuckled.
“What are you doing here?” she wondered.
“Well” he said running his hands through his longish hair nervously “I kind of wanted to ask you something” he said.
“Ok-ay” Maria said nervously.
“GooutwithmeSaturdaynight?” he said. But he had said it so quickly that Maria had no idea what he had said.
“Is that a question?” she asked.
“Um yeah.” He smiled and then took a deep breath before asking her again. “Maria will you go out with me on a date on Saturday night?” he said.
He watched her mouth opening and closing like a fish and he was positive she was going to say know “what are you scared of?” he whispered.
Maria’s eyes widened “what?”
“I already knew you were going to say no and I’m wondering what you’re so scared of?” he asked.
Maria looked around the store nervously, praying that someone would appear so that she didn’t have to have this conversation with him “Michael now isn’t the time” she said.
“You’re kidding right?” he laughed “this place is dead, I’m probably the first person that’s walked in here all day” he said to her.
“I can’t do this with you” she whispered, her face reflecting the pain that she was feeling right at that moment.
“I just want a chance,” he pleaded.
Maria looked at his sincere face. Her heart was telling her that he didn’t want to her hurt but her head was telling her he was just like every other man in her life and that she couldn’t trust him.
“I-I” she started tears springing to her eyes.
Michael could see he pushed too far, that she was on the verge of tears and immediately took a step back to indicate that he was backing off “Just think about it” he whispered as he continued stepping backward towards the door.
“Please?” he added.
“Ok” she finally agreed.
Maria took a few breaths and tried to rein in her emotions, what was she doing?
She picked up the phone and dialed the number by heart and sighed in relief when the phone was picked up.
“Liz” she said emotionally. “I really need to talk to you,” she cried.
***
Alex sighed as he looked around his apartment. He was almost finished packing, the only things left were the things he would need for the next week and he would finish packing them on Thursday before leaving to spend the night at a hotel.
He was rummaging through a box looking for some cutlery to eat his pasta witht when his phone started ringing and he smiled when he saw that it was Isabel.
“Hey beautiful” he greeted.
“Hey yourself” she said.
He had noticed a huge change in her since the following week. During some of their first conversations after he had left he could tell that she wasn’t doing too well and he was worried. Liz had told him that they had spent the night together seeing a movie and having coffee and that Isabel had opened up a little and since then she seemed happier.
“So I booked my flight,” she said cheerily.
“Yeah?” he said knowing he had to continue the pretence that he was expecting her, he hoped that she at least had a refundable flight or she was going to be pissed with him on Friday.
“Yep so your ass in mine on Friday night Whitman” she giggled.
“Oh you can count on it Princess” he replied.
“Oh I can’t wait,” she told him. On his end Alex was grinning like a fool, he knew without a doubt he was making the right decision and he couldn’t wait to see Isabel Evans face on Friday.
“Me either. I’m counting down the seconds,” he told her.
***
Liz frowned as she knocked on the door and waited for Maria to answer. When she had called her a few hours earlier in tears Liz had been shocked and extremely worried. Maria was normally such a strong person so Liz knew right away that something was definitely wrong.
She was right. When Maria finally opened the door her hair was a mess and her eyes were red from crying.
“Sweetie what’s wrong?” Liz asked worried.
“I’m sorry to bother you” Maria apologized.
“Don’t be silly you are never a bother” Liz assured her.
“What happened?”
“Michael asked me out” she cried.
“Really that’s great” Liz smiled but when Maria didn’t smile back Liz’s smile faltered, “isn’t it?”
“No it isn’t,” she said. “What am I supposed to say?”
“What do you want to say?” Liz asked realizing that she needed to take tentative steps with Maria. Liz had known Maria most of her life and she understood why Maria had issues with men. Well to some degree anyway.
Maria’s father had walked out on her and her mother when she was six and Maria had been utterly devastated. Liz remembered how she had cried every day at lunchtime for over a year and then on her seventh birthday when he didn’t come back she didn’t cry anymore. Liz remembered what she had said like it was yesterday. Liz had asked her why she wasn’t crying today and she said it was because she wasn’t going to waste another tear on him or any other man ever again and to Liz’s knowledge she hadn’t.
“Y-Yes” she admitted. “But I’m so scared Liz” she cried then. “I’m so scared that I’m going to open myself to him, to trust him and that he’s going to disappoint me or hurt me like every other man in my life”
Liz thought about what she was going to say carefully before she said it, one wrong move and she knew Maria would close up on her. In their 20 years of friendship and their five-year relationship Maria had only ever opened up about her feelings towards her father once.
“I know that you have issues” Liz whispered “with what you father did to you and…”
“It’s not just that” Maria whispered painfully cutting Liz off.
Liz looked up her and immediately became surprised when the saw the look of absolute anguish on Maria’s face. She was shaking and she was starting to scare Maria.
“Maria” Liz whispered “are you ok?” she asked.
“I’ve tried so hard to forget Liz so hard but I cant” she cried “just when I think I’ve put in behind me it rears its ugly head”
Liz moved so that she was sitting next to Maria and took her into her arms “Maria I’m not sure what you’re talking about, is this about your Dad?” she asked.
Maria shook her head.
“Maria?” she questioned quietly.
“Do you remember by Uncle Frankie?” she whispered.
Liz nodded “yeah” she said. The memory was vague but she remembered a fat old guy that was always at Maria’s house when she was little. He used to drink and smoke and Liz always thought he smelt.
“He did things to me Liz,” she said painfully
Liz’s eyes widened. Was Maria saying what she thought she was saying? And if so how was it possible that she didn’t already know about this. Wouldn’t the police have been involved or wouldn’t Maria have been in therapy?
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“He touched me Liz” she cried “and I let him, I never told anyone,” she cried.
“Oh god” Liz closed her eyes in pain. She couldn’t believe this was happening but worst of all how was it that Maria had kept this a secret for so long.
“Maria honey” she said gently “where did he touch you?” she asked.
Liz already knew but she needed to hear Maria confirm it.
“God Liz don’t make me answer that,” she cried.
“Ok” Liz soothed “Maria when did this happen?” she asked gently.
“After my dad left” she cried “he left Liz and he let him do things to me that he shouldn’t have” she wailed.
Liz closed her eyes in pain “oh god Ria why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.
“He told me I couldn’t Liz” she cried “we had no money after my Dad left and he was helping my mum and he said if I ever told that he wouldn’t help her any more and that we would have to leave our house” she explained.
“Oh Ria” Liz soothed “I’m so so sorry” she told her.
“Now so you see why you can’t trust men Liz?” she asked her “They’re pigs Liz. They just leave without so much as a goodbye and allow other people to take advantage of the people they leave behind. He was supposed to protect me Liz,” she screamed.
“He was my dad and it was his job to protect me but instead he left me and he let that man do things to me. I was just a little girl Liz,” she cried before falling to the floor and sobbing her heart out.
Liz scrambled to the floor and pulled her into her arms and let her own tears falls. Tears of regret that she hadn’t know and hadn’t been able to do anything to help her best friend and tears for the pain she knew she was still experiencing and always would because of what that piece of shit had done to her.
Liz swore to herself then that she would find that man and make him pay for what he had done if it was the last thing she did.
“Shh” she cried. “Just let it all out honey”

Max looked over at his girlfriend with a worried frown. He had stopped by earlier wanting to take her out to dinner and she had been quiet and sad, something that he had never experienced with her before.
He reached across the table and took her hand and when Liz felt his hand over her own she looked up at him and offered him a smile. However, it didn’t reach her eyes and Max knew she was trying to put on a happy front for him and he wanted her to know that she didn’t have to.
“Let’s go for a walk,” he suggested.
“Um ok” Liz agreed.
Once they stepped outside Max wrapped his arm around her and pulled her tightly against his side as he walked. They must have walked a few blocks before the silence became too much.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he said.
“Huh?” Liz asked surprised.
Max stopped and framed her face with his hands “I know something is bothering you and I’m here when you’re ready to talk about it” he told her softly before leaning and kissing her lovingly.
Liz felt tears spring to her eyes then. How did she ever find someone so amazing “thank you” she whispered. Liz did desperately want to talk to him, since Maria’s confession a few nights earlier Liz had wanted to talk to someone, anyone about it but she didn’t think Maria would like her sharing a secret that she had kept so tightly for the past 18 years. Liz felt so guilty. Guilty because she hadn’t known that something was going on especially when Maria was supposed to be her best friend, that she couldn’t do something to stop it. But mostly she felt guilty now because she couldn’t make it better.
All she had been able to do the other night is stay with Maria while she cried, and cry with her. Nothing she said or did was ever going to be able to take the pain away but it did make things a lot clearer for her. Now she understood why Maria was so scared of men. For years Liz had thought it was because of the way her father had walked out on her life and never looked back.
“So you finish up at work on Friday” he said then “are you doing anything special?” he wondered.
Liz smiled for the first time that night; she was looking forward to finishing up at work. Since she had put in her resignation it hadn’t been the happiest place for her to work. So far she hadn’t accepted Max’s offer to work at Evans and Associates but she planned on it. It was a good contract for her first year and she was excited about going to work with Max.
“They’re taking me out to lunch” she said.
Max nodded “well at least that’s something” he commented.
Liz chuckled “I think that the only reason they’re doing that is because they know I haven’t started somewhere else yet”
“Ah” he smirked, she was probably right. They would have enough connections that they would be able to find out who had hired Liz, but since her contract negotiations at Evans were a secret they wouldn’t have heard anything about them.
“Yeah and about that” he started.
“I’m accepting” Liz quickly told him.
“You are?” he said hopefully. Although Liz was an excellent lawyer and he was sure that she would make the firm a lot of money he was excited about the prospect of working with her, having her close by. He had already started making arrangements to have an office built next door to his, with an internal door.
“Yeah I am” she smiled.
They started walking back towards where the car was parked after that and once there Max helped Liz in before they headed back to her apartment.
“Are you staying?” Liz asked hopefully.
Max hadn’t been sure after dinner if she wanted him to, that maybe she needed some time alone but as he looked in her eyes and saw the hope there he knew he was wrong.
“I’d love too” he assured her.
Isabel was working away at the table whilst watching television when they entered.
“Hey” she smiled.
“Hey Iz” they both greeted.
Isabel also looked at Liz concerned and threw a questioning look at Max when she turned away to place her bag and keys down. Max shrugged at his sister.
“We’re just going to head upstairs,” Liz told Isabel. Not that she had anything against Isabel but right now she just wanted to be alone with Max.
Max let her lead him up the stairs and into his room by the hand “Have a bath with me?” she asked him when they entered.
“Sure” he smiled.
While Liz poured the bubble bath into the large corner bath they had in the bathroom Max undressed, that was when he noticed the photo albums beside Liz’s bed. He sat down and quickly scanned through them and immediately realized they were from her childhood.
“It’s ready” Liz called out from the bathroom.
Max sunk into the tub full of hot water and bubbles before holding his arms out for Liz. Liz hopped in and sat down between his legs, her back pressed against his chest.
“This is nice,” he whispered.
“Yeah” she agreed. They’re alone time was minimal and normally they had so much to do and wanted to do together that they were exhausted by the time it was over.
Max looked down at the angel in his arms then and smiled, she was the most beautiful creature he had ever laid eyes on but he wished she would open up to him about what was troubling her.
They soaked in the water in silence until slowly it became too much for Liz and her shoulders began to shake with her silent sobs.
Max pulled her tighter against him and kissed the top of her head over and over again “Its ok baby” he whispered over and over again.
When Liz’s tears subsided she looked up at him apologetically “I’m sorry you must think I’m crazy”
“Nah beautiful” he whispered in reply.
God she loved him she thought.
“Do you want to talk about it?” he asked again.
“Yes” she answered automatically. “But I don’t know if I should” she added.
Max looked at her confused “now I’m confused” he voiced.
“I’m sorry” Liz sighed.
“Look, I’m here and you can talk to me about anything, when ever you’re ready”
“If I tell you, you wouldn’t tell anyone right?” she asked.
Max ran a hand through her long locks “of course I wouldn’t” he assured her.
Liz stood up in the bath then and hopped out, once she had a big fluffy towel wrapped around her body she held her hand out to Max. Max stood up and took it without hesitation and followed her into the bedroom.
They sat down on the bed with Liz wrapped in Max’s arms. “I got a call from Maria on Tuesday” she explained.
“Ok” he said. He had a feeling it had something to do with Maria, since meeting Liz she was the only one who he had seen have this type of affect on her.
“Did you know that her and Michael went out on Friday night to a concert?”
“He mentioned it” he nodded.
“Well he went to see her at the music shop on Tuesday and asked her out, this time on a proper date” she told him.
Once again Max nodded encouraging her to continue with the story.
“I’m not really sure what he said but he obviously has some type of affect on her. By the time I reached her apartment that afternoon she was hysterical. She didn’t think she could trust him not to hurt her like all the other men in her life had.
You see Maria’s father walked out on her on her sixth birthday and she has never seen or heard from him since. She cried every day for a year until one day she finally realized that he wasn’t coming back. Ever since then she has always hated men. I’m actually surprised that she could let Alex in enough to become his friend”
“Wow that must have been hard on her” Max sighed. His father had always played a big part in both his and Isabel’s life even though he worked a lot. Max couldn’t imagine what it must have been like for Maria growing up.
“Yeah it was” Liz said.
“Maria wants to let Michael in. I thought that she was worried that he would do what her father did, walk out on her and that’s why she felt like she couldn’t trust him,” she explained.
“But…” Max prompted.
“God Max” she started to cry, “she told me the most horrible things” she started to cry.
Max rubbed her back and waited patiently for her to calm down a little “After Maria’s father left her Uncle Frankie came to stay with her and her mother for a while. I don’t really remember him except that he was fat and always stunk,” she told him.
Max nodded.
“God Max he did things to her” she cried “terrible things and I didn’t know. I didn’t see and I couldn’t do anything to help her”
Max’s eyes widened “Liz did he molest her?” he whispered in concern.
Liz nodded
“Fuck” Max hissed.
“She never told a soul Max” she added then “she’s kept this a secret for eighteen years”
“Oh god” Max said.
“He told her that is she told anyone he would leave and then her mum wouldn’t have enough money and they would have to move away from Roswell and all her friends” she explained.
“Sick fucker” he hissed.
“How did she do it Max?” she cried. “How did she keep something like that to herself for so long?”
Max thought about her question for a long time before answering and when he did what came out of his mouth was the absolute truth. “I have now idea Liz but what I do know is that something like that can destroy a person. Obviously Maria’s growing feelings for Michael are bringing all these things up again for her”
Liz nodded “yeah you’re probably right” she whispered thinking that if she had never broken Maria’s heart that none of this might never have happened.
“Don’t” Max whispered. “Don’t blame yourself for something that you had no control over” he told her.
“You were six years old baby and it wouldn’t have matter if you had known because you wouldn’t have been able to stop him, he might have just hurt you too.” They both shivered at the thought.
“I don’t know what to do to help her Max, I fell so helpless” she cried.
Max cupped her shin softly in his hand and ran his fingers down her cheek “just be there for her when she needs a friend Liz” he suggested “that and I think you should encourage her to get some professional help”
Liz looked up at him then, her eyes locking with his and she felt like she was drowning. He had the most beautiful eyes.
“Max” she whispered “God I…” it was on the tip of her tongue to tell him that she loved him but before she could say it Max leaned in and captured her lips.
He spent the rest of the night treasuring her and helping her leave the nightmares in Maria’s life behind, if only for a few hours.

Part 35
Maria rolled over and listened as the answering machine picked up her latest call. The phone had rung four or five times already that night, twice it was Liz, once Alex and the other two times the person hadn’t left a message. She didn’t feel like talking to anyone tonight. It still surprised her that she had finally been able to talk to Liz about what had happened in the past. It had been buried so deeply for so long and she had no idea where it came from.
Well that wasn’t entirely true.
Michael Guerin.
Ever since he had come into Maria’s life she had been so confused. Deep down she knew she was attracted to him and the more she got to know him the more she liked him, he was a sweet guy, someone that she could see herself with. But then there was still that little voice in the back of her head that told her that she couldn’t trust him. That in the end he was just like every other male and he would hurt her in the end.
Basically her and head and her heart were in conflict and right now she had no idea, which one would win.
It had helped talking to Liz. Liz hadn’t judged her instead she had just cried with her while expressing her sorrow and regret for what had happened to her. Maria knew that Liz was blaming herself but as far as Maria was concerned that was ridiculous. Liz was six years old at the time and she had no idea that anything was wrong, and Maria was glad that she didn’t.
“Hi this is Maria, leave me a message” she heard her voice say over the machine.
“Um Maria hi” the voice said “it’s Michael” he confirmed and Maria closed her eyes to ward off the desire running through her body to race towards the phone and pick it up. “Listen I want to take you out, no pressure just dinner on Friday night” he said. “Let me know ok”
The phone went dead then.
A couple of minutes later the phone rang again and this time it was Liz again.
“Maria I know you’re there and obviously you don’t want to talk to me right now. That’s fine. But here’s what I think. However stupid it might sound I think you should go out with Michael. Not because it might mean something or be the start of something but because you can’t let that scum bag win. Don’t let him stop you from ever finding any happiness with someone.”
She heard Liz sigh then and hopped up off the bed and rushed towards the phone.
“Don’t let him win… that’s all” she whispered.
“Liz” Maria said picking up the phone but by that stage Liz had already hung up.
***
“Is everything alright?” Isabel asked Liz. She has walked in the room and heard Liz talking on the phone and she seemed a little upset about something.
“It’s just Maria that’s all” Liz smiled grateful for the distraction that Isabel’s presence would cause.
“Ok” Isabel nodded deciding not to interfere. Isabel knew that if Liz wanted to talk to her that she would they just had that kind of friendship.
“So are you all packed for tomorrow?” Liz asked. She had to do her best to hide her smile.
“Yep” she grinned “God I can’t wait Liz” she admitted, “I’ve missed Alex so much”
“Yeah it’s strange he was only here for a month but I miss him too. I would really love to be able to just sit and talk to him right now”
“I know” Isabel smiled.
“So do you want me to take you tomorrow?” she asked. Friday was her last day at work and she didn’t intend staying very long after attending the lunch they planned for her.
“You wouldn’t mind?” Isabel asked.
“No I’ll just ask Max can I borrow his car,” she told her. Max had already told her that she could borrow it whenever she needed so she knew it wouldn’t be a problem.
“Are you sure?” Isabel asked.
Liz actually thought it was perfect because it wasn’t like Isabel would really be leaving the apartment. Alex’s flight had arrived a few hours ago and he was spending the night at the Hyatt around the corner. He planned on showing up on the doorstep just as Isabel was walking out to catch her flight.
“Positive”
“Ok well I’m going to go finish packing,” she said before leaving to head back upstairs.
Liz grabbed her stuff then “Isabel I’m going out I wont be late” she yelled up the stairs.
“Ok” Isabel yelled back.
Liz walked the two blocks to the Hyatt and asked for Alex’s room number at the reception.
“Lizzie” Alex cried when he opened the door.
Liz jumped into her best friends arms and let him hug her tight.
“God I’ve missed you,” she told him when they broke apart.
“Me too, its great to be back in New York” he grinned. “So how’s Isabel? She doesn’t suspect anything does she?” he asked.
“Not a thing. In fact she’s agreed to let me take her to the airport tomorrow in Max’s car so that way I’ll be able to stop her from leaving the apartment early or something”
“Great” he grinned.
“So what’s been going on? Where’s Maria?” he asked as they sat down on the couch. He had thought that both Liz and Maria would be showing up, they were going to order room service and catch up like old times.
Liz sighed. “I couldn’t get hold of her” she replied.
“Oh ok is she at work?” Alex asked.
“No I don’t think so”
“Did the two of you have a fight?” he asked concerned.
“No” Liz quickly assured him.
“What’s going on then?” he asked.
“I can’t really tell you too much Alex. Maria told me some things in confidence but I’m sure she’ll tell you herself when she’s ready” she replied.
“Is it bad?” he asked. Something about the way Liz was being vague told him that it was something bad and he was worried now. It wasn’t normal for Liz and Maria to have secrets from him. If one knew they normally all knew.
“Yeah it’s not good Alex” she tried to smile for his benefit but she knew she was failing miserably.
“Liz” he sighed. She couldn’t just tell him that and then not tell him, it was going to eat at him.
“I cant,” she pleaded. If Maria knew that she had told Max as well as Alex then she was sure she would be mad. Maria would tell Alex in her own time Liz was sure of that. The only reason Liz had told Max was because it was eating at her and she had needed someone to talk to and Alex hadn’t been available.
“I really wish I could tell you Alex because god do I need some advice on what to do but…”
“It’s ok Liz. I know Maria will tell me herself when she is ready,” he told her.
***
“I don’t really need to borrow the car,” Liz moaned out in between kisses.
Max had dropped over this morning to drop off the car after Liz had called him last night to pretend to ask to borrow it so that she could take Isabel to the airport. Of course Max was more than aware that there would be no trip to the airport though.
“Hmm I know” he replied his own voice hoarse from their passionate kisses “but this way it’s all for show and I get to make out with my sexy girlfriend this morning”
Liz giggled a little before leaning in and capturing the lobe of his ear in her mouth “well if you come to my room you’ll get to do more than kiss me” she teased him.
Max groaned, it was already eight o’clock and he should be getting to work but god her offer was so tempting. Liz wasn’t dressed yet, still standing before him in a skimpy satin slip that she wore to bed and it left nothing to his imagination.
“I can’t wait until tonight to have you,” she added when she saw that he was hesitating.
Since Alex was making his surprise appearance that afternoon Liz had already asked Max if she could spend the weekend at his place. It had become the norm between then since they had started dating to spend most of their time at his place, to spare Isabel, so it made sense this weekend. That way Isabel and Alex could have the apartment to themselves.
That was all she needed to convince him. The next thing Liz knew Max had scooped her up and was charging up the stairs towards her bedroom.
Liz had his tie undone and his shirt unbuttoned by the time Max slammed her door shut.
“God Liz” he groaned as her hot mouth closed around one of his honey nipples.
“Please Max I need you” she pleaded.
Max shoved a hand between their bodies as he propped Liz up against the nearest wall. He groaned when his finger came into immediate contact with the wetness.
“I knew you were coming,” she whispered when she realized his surprise and delight that she wasn’t wearing any panties.
Max thrust a finger inside her creamy depths and found her already wet and ready for him.
“God Liz” he groaned.
“Hurry Max” she pleaded again. Liz needed to feel him inside of her so badly that she was aching.
Max quickly tore at the button and zip on his dress pants and when he finally had them undone; he pushed them and his boxers down past his knees. He thrust inside her in one smooth stroke before immediately pulling out again.
“Yes Max” Liz cried.
“God Liz you’re so wet” Max groaned as he pumped in and out of body.
“Oh harder baby” Liz pleaded with him.
Max was already banging her hard against the wall but he was happy to oblige her and began to increase the strength and quickness of his strokes in and out of her body.
“Yes Max…. ahh MAX” she cried out as her walls fluttered around his hard cock and began milking Max of his orgasm.
“Ahh…. LIZ.” Max cried out.
They slid to the ground together both panting and trying to catch their breaths.
“Good morning sweetheart” Liz whispered huskily against his ear then.
Max chuckled briefly before turning and fusing their mouths together, their tongues gently tangling together.
“Good morning to you beautiful girl” he whispered when they broke apart.
He caught sight of the alarm clock at Liz’s bedside then and groaned. It was now half past eight.
“Let me throw on some clothes and I’ll drive you to work” Liz suggested. It would be impossible to get a cab at this time of the morning.
“Thanks” he smiled “but are you sure I don’t want to make you late”
“Max what are they going to do, fire me?” she laughed.
“True” He said.
While Liz quickly dressed Max tried to straighten his very crinkled suit but he wasn’t having very much success and in the end decided to change into the spare suit he kept at Liz’s.
“You look nice” Liz smiled when she emerged from the bathroom and found him dressed in a black pin stripe suit instead of the gray one he arrived in.
“I’m so glad that I keep this stuff here” he chuckled “there was no way I could wear that to work now” he said looking down at his clothing.
“Come on stud” she grinned then “lets get you to work”

Part 36
“Liz are you ready?” Isabel yells up the stairs.
Her flight was due to leave in two hours and she wanted to get on the road in case they got stuck in traffic.
“Shit” Liz cursed up stairs. Liz hadn’t expected her to want to leave for another half an hour yet.
“Just a minute I need to go to the toilet,” she yelled.
Picking up the phone she quickly dialed Alex’s cell phone “You need to get over here now, she wants to leave and I’m running out of excuses” she whispered into the phone once he picked up.
“Ok, I’m on my way,” he told her.
Dragging out her trip to the bathroom for as long as she can, Liz finally hurried down the stairs ten minutes later.
“I’ll just go grab the car and park it out the front then I’ll come back up and help you with your bags” she suggested.
“Its ok I only have the one I’ll just come with you” Isabel said. Liz was acting very strange and she wasn’t sure why.
Liz opened her mouth to try and argue with Isabel but stopped when she heard the doorbell. “Why don’t you grab that and I’ll go and get a bottle of water?” she said.
“What the hell is wrong with her?” she mumbled to herself as she reluctantly dropped her bag and headed for the door.
Isabel had no idea who it could be; most people would still be at work.
“Yes?” she asked when she opened the door, not paying attention to the person on the other side.
“Wow I expected a better hello then that” Alex joked.
Isabel’s eyes shot up when she heard his voice “Alex!” she said surprised.
“Hi Princess” he grinned.
“Oh my god” she shrieked before jumping into his arms.
Alex dropped his bags just in time to catch her.
Liz popped her head around the corner and grinned when she saw Alex and Isabel in a tight embrace and then quietly crept out of the room to give some privacy.
“God what are you doing here?” Isabel asked when she pulled back.
“Well…” Alex said sheepishly looking down at his suitcases.
It was then that Isabel realized that Alex didn’t just have an over night bag he had two very large suitcases.
“Alex?” she questioned. “I thought I was coming to visit you, I even booked the flight?” she said.
“I wanted to surprise you,” he explained.
Isabel grinned at her handsome boyfriend then “well that’s a lot of bags for a weekend visit” she chuckled.
Alex chuckled nervously “yeah, do you think I could come in?” he asked.
“Oh of course” Isabel replied quickly stepping aside to let him in.
“So what’s with the bags?” she asked once they were in the living room, she also noted as she looked around that Liz had disappeared and she wondered if she had been in on Alex’s surprise visit from the start.
“Well” Alex started running his hand through his sheepishly; things weren’t going the way he planned. Firstly he had hoped Isabel would be so thrilled with his arrival that she would be too pre-occupied to be asking all these questions and secondly he hadn’t really worked out what he was going to say.
“I just missed you so much” he told her.
“Oh Alex” Isabel sighed, melting at his words and into his arms when he finally kissed her like he had been longing to since he set eyes on her five minutes earlier.
The minute their lips met Alex deepened it, thrusting his tongue into her mouth. God he had missed her taste and the feel of her in his arms.
“I missed you too” Isabel sighed when they broke apart.
Alex grinned at her.
“So how long are you staying?” she asked excited.
“How long do you want me to?” he replied.
“God forever but I know that’s impossible” she sighed.
“Well your wish is granted Princess”
“What?” Isabel asked a little confused.
“I said your wish is granted” he smiled.
“Don’t joke around with me, Alex,” she warned him.
“Would I do that?” he laughed. “Seriously, I’m here and I’m not planning on going anywhere”
“But what about your job?” Isabel cried.
“I resigned” he grinned sheepishly.
“What! When?” she demanded.
“Um about an hour after I arrived in Boston” he admitted.
“But why Alex? You love your job?” she asked. The last thing she wanted was for Alex to give up his job and life in Boston to move to New York for her. What happened if things didn’t work out, or worse yet what if Alex decided he had made the wrong decision down the track and hated her for it?
“Did you really think that I was going to be able to stay away? I love you Bella and I don’t want to do the long distance relationship thing”
“I don’t either” she cried “but I didn’t want you to have to give your life up for me”
“But I want to” he told her “I wouldn’t have gone back at all if you hadn’t of insisted on it” he added then.
“I don’t care about my job or Boston, I care about you and I would rather be in New York with you, Liz and Maria than lonely in Boston”
“Yeah but at least in Boston you had a place to live and a job” she grumbled.
“Yeah I did but its not like I can’t get a job in New York, I’m a computer programmer, Isabel there are always jobs going. In fact I have an interview on Monday” he smiled proudly.
“You do?” she asked hopefully.
“Yep and I’m pretty excited about it” he told her.
Alex stepped forward then and his arms out for her “please don’t be angry baby, I just want to be with you” he told her.
Isabel rushed into his arms and buried her face in his chest. God she had missed him like crazy and now he was standing in her apartment declaring his love for her again, and telling her that he had given up his life in Boston to be with her.
“God I love you,” she cried. “And I want to be with you too I just don’t want you to ever regret us that’s all”
“That will never happen” he assured her before kissing her softly.
They stood in silence basking in the love between them then and how wonderful it truly was to be back together. Both with their own hopes of where this new beginning would lead them and what the future held for them.

Michael hesitated before knocking on the door. He knew this could be a very bad idea but he hadn’t been able to help himself from coming.
It only took a few minutes for Maria to open the door and by the look on her face Michael knew he should have followed his first instincts. This was a bad idea.
“M-Michael!” she said surprised.
“Hi” Michael smiled sheepishly.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
Maria had just been minding her own business spending her Friday evening off by watching some DVD’s and catching up on her fan fiction when she heard the knock on the door. At first she was reluctant to answer, she had been avoiding phone calls from everyone all week but for some reason she decided not to ignore them anymore.
“Well you haven’t returned any of my calls so I thought I’d just take a chance and show up here” he explained.
“Um I’ve been busy” she lied.
“Yeah?” Michael said, “I just thought you were avoiding me,” he laughed.
Maria blushed bright red at how right he was “ok maybe I have” she admitted as she leaned against the door.
“So are you done avoiding me now so I can take you out to dinner?” he asked.
“Michael” she sighed.
“Its just dinner Maria, not a marriage proposal” he joked.
How did he do this to her? Maria wondered. All he had to do was smile at her and she was ready to give in to him.
“It doesn’t even have to be a date,” he added then.
Michael could tell by the look on her face that she was ready to cave “Please?” he added and he smiled when he watched her slump in defeat.
“Ok” she sighed.
“Great” he grinned.
“When?” she asked him then.
“How about now?” Michael asked. It was still early and there was plenty of time for Maria to get ready and to go grab something to eat. Also, Michael figured that if he took her out now rather than setting it up for the next night she wouldn’t have the opportunity come up with an excuse to cancel on him.
Maria hesitated for a second but then decided that she should just get this over and done with and then she could tell him to buzz off right?
“Ok” she agreed, “You can come in and wait while I get ready”
An hour later they were sitting in an Italian restaurant that Michael loved sipping on a glass of wine and Maria had to admit it was nice to get out of the house. She had been hiding from everything and everyone for most of the week.
“So this isn’t so bad is it?” Michael teased.
“Um no” Maria agreed.
“I’m sorry Michael,” she finally said. “I know you must think I’m crazy or something” she whispered.
Michael reached across the table and surprised Maria but placing his hand over hers “I don’t think you’re crazy” he whispered. “If I thought that I wouldn’t be here with you would I?” he smiled.
“Why are you?” she found herself asking. “after all the effort it took to get me to agree to come to dinner with you”
“I like you Maria” he whispered. “Its as simple as that. I want to get to you know you because I just know that you’re a wonderful person and I don’t want to miss out on that”
Maria felt tears come to her eyes; Michael Guerin had to be one of the sweetest guys she had ever met.
“I like you too” she found herself saying.
Michael was shocked when he heard the words come out of his mouth but he did his best to hide it because he knew the significance of Maria’s words. They had just made a major break through.

Part 37
Liz had to admit to herself as she stood in the elevator at Evans and Associates that she was as nervous as hell. Even though she knew that on the other side of the doors, once she reached the twentieth floor, Max would be waiting for her she still felt a little sick to her stomach.
Today was her first day at Evans. Last night over a romantic dinner Max had talked her through what would happen. It was fairly simple and easy but she still felt anxious. She wondered what everyone would think of her and if they would all know that she was sleeping with Max from one look at her.
“Can I help you?” a preppy young red head asked as she stepped out of the lift.
“Good morning” Liz smiled back trying to paint a picture of confidence “I’m Elizabeth Parker and I’m starting here today” she told her.
“Liz” Max called out when he saw her.
Liz turned and smiled at him, he looked so good in his suit, as good as he this morning as they got ready for work together.
“Liz this is Sandra” he introduced. “Sandra, Liz is the newest member of our team, she will be heading up the new department,” he informed her.
“Pleased to meet you” she smiled.
With his hand on her lower back Max guided Liz towards his office then, and once inside shut the door.
“Hey” he grinned leaning against his desk.
“Hey” she smiled back.
“Ok let’s get to it” he grinned then.
He handed her an envelope then. “In there is all your security access for the building. A key to your office and just some information about the firm” he informed her.
“Thank you” she smiled. Having the keys and everything in her hands made everything seem that little bit more real.
“I’ll show you to your office, there’s a brand new lap top there for you so if you want to spend the morning getting everything organized I’ve cleared my schedule so we can spend the afternoon going over some potential cases and to talk about hiring you an assistant”
“Great” Liz smiled and stood up.
Max walked forward and wrapped an arm around her waist then and pulled her against him “You seem nervous baby?” he smiled. He was a little amused that Liz seemed slightly intimidated by him and he had to remind himself that she wasn’t used to him in the work environment.
Liz chuckled “I was”
“You’re feeling better now?” he whispered huskily as he leaned down towards her mouth until he only a breath away.
“Um I’m certainly getting there,” she whispered back.
Max pressed his lips against hers gently for a brief second before pulling away. He would have liked the kiss to be a lot more but he knew it wasn’t really appropriate for the office. “You look gorgeous today,” he informed her. “I don’t know how the hell I’m going to get any work done knowing that you’re next door”
“Next door?” she asked in surprise.
“Uh huh” he grinned. The room that Max had converted to Liz’s new office had previously been a second meeting room that Max’s father had used. Max very rarely used it and had thought with its magnificent views that it would be the perfect office for Liz. It helped that it was so close to his and there was already an internal door.
“Let me show you” he offered then.
They both composed themselves and took a step apart as they exited his office and walked the few meters to Liz’s.
Liz grinned when she read her name ‘Elizabeth Parker’ printed on the door.
Once inside the office Liz was very impressed. Max hadn’t spared any expense in setting it up. The furniture was a dark chocolate with a modern lounge, and meeting table. The office was also twice the size of her previous one.
“What do you think?” he asked.
“It’s wonderful” she smiled at him “thank you so much”
Max smiled happily “I would suggest keeping the blinds drawn” he whispered then.
“Really?” she asked “any reason?”
“Hmm a few” he whispered huskily “but just remember your boss could come knocking on your internal door when ever he feels the need”
“Internal door?” she asked surprised.
“Ah huh” he replied nodding towards the door.
“Well I’ll keep it unlocked” she grinned.
“You do that sexy” he grinned before swatting her ass. “I have a few meetings this morning but if you need anything just see Margaret outside my office”
“Ok” she said.
“Wow” she mumbled to herself when Max was gone. The office really was amazing and she suspected Max had chosen most of the furnishings himself because it was all perfectly and suited her to her tastes.
Deciding to get to work Liz turned on her lap top and began going through the files that had already been left on her desk and that’s how Max found her over three hours later.
“Working hard I see?” he smiled from her opened door.
Liz leaned back in her leather chair and smiled at him “yeah someone has too, seems the boss just walks around the office all day” she teased.
“Ha ha” he replied as he walked in “keep talking to me like that and I wont take you to lunch” he warned.
“Lunch?” Liz said surprised but when she looked at the clock she realized it was now one o’clock.
Max chuckled when he saw her shock at how much time had passed. “Yes lunch, do you think you could spare an hour for me?”
“Of course” she immediately agreed.
Grabbing her bag Liz followed Max out of her office. It was so hard to stop from reaching out for him; she wanted to hold his hand like they normally did when they walked together.
They were on their way to the lift, passing other offices on the way, which Liz looked at curiously wondering who occupied them. She knew that Max would get around to introducing her to everyone later that day.
“Hey Max” a man a few years older than Max greeted them as they walked past “and you must be Elizabeth” he smiled.
“Yes” Max confirmed “Jessie Ramirez this is Elizabeth Parker. Jessie handles most of our litigation,” he explained to Liz.
“Its good to meet you” Liz smiled and offered her hand.
Jessie eyed the new piece of meat with delight. He and a few of the other associates had been intrigued when they heard that Liz Parker was joining the firm and heading up a new department. Jessie had to admit it was a smart move on Max’s part and now that he had met Liz Parker and he was even more pleased. Liz was gorgeous and he wondered if she was seeing anyone.
“You too” he replied with a bright grin, a grin that Max was not too happy to see on his colleagues face.
“Excuse me Jessie” a voice interrupted them then before blonde curls appeared.
Max had to bite back a groan. It was inevitable that Liz and Tess were going to run into each other eventually but Max had hoped it would be later in the week.
“Oh Tess” Jessie turned to his assistant with a smile. “Have you met Liz?” he asked oblivious to the way his assistant was glaring at Liz or the way Liz had stiffened.
“No” she replied.
“Liz Parker” Liz introduced herself holding out her hand.
“Tess Harding” she replied shaking her hand.
“Liz will be heading up our new department” Max explained.
“Oh” Tess resisted the urge to frown. “I didn’t realise that we were getting a new department”
“Yes” Max nodded “they’ll specialize in divorce” he replied.
“How did you like your office Liz?” Jessie asked then.
“Oh its great” Liz smiled. Jessie seemed liked a nice guy and she thought they would get a long well.
“You sure lucked out with the space some of us have been trying to get our hands on it for years” he chuckled.
Liz smiled back a little unsure of how to respond, “well if you’ll excuse us we were just on our way out” Max explained.
“Sure. Good meeting you Liz” Jessie said. “I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other around the office”
“You too Jessie, Tess” Liz said politely.
Once they were safely inside the elevator Max finally relaxed “I’m sorry about that” he said turning to Liz.
“Why?” she asked. It wasn’t like it was Max’s fault that Jessie had stopped them on the way out for lunch.
“It must have been awkward meeting Tess that way after the last time you met” he said.
“Yeah it was a bit of a shock seeing her again,” Liz admitted. “I guess I just didn’t think about her working here”
“Is it going to be awkward for you?” he asked concerned.
“Does it matter?” Liz asked with a small smile. “Its not like you can just fire her because I don’t like her,” she pointed out.
“You’re right” he sighed, “I’ve been trying to figure out how to get rid of her but in the end it isn’t really my call”
“Whose is it?” he asked.
“Jessie’s” Max replied “and unless his dick falls off anytime soon it wont happen” he scoffed.
Liz raised her eyebrows at that comment. “Just do me a favor and stay away from him,” he said then.
“Excuse me?” Liz laughed.
“The guys a sleaze, Liz and I saw the way he was looking at you. He’s eyeing you up for his next conquest”
“Isn’t he married?” she asked confused. Liz could have sworn she saw a ring on his wedding finger.
“Like that stops him. Tess is hardly the secretary of the year, Liz why do you think he keeps her around?”
“Oh” she replied her eyes widening. “I didn’t realize she was so busy” she added then unable to stop the scathing comment from leaving her lips.
The minute she saw the hurt look on his face she wanted desperately to take it back but seeing Tess had made her slightly angry. She hated the fact that a women Max used to fuck around with still worked close by to him.
“I guess I deserve that,” he said quietly.
“No you didn’t” Liz shook her head. “That was totally uncalled for and bitchy and I’m sorry,” she said. “Will you forgive me?”
“If you’ll forgive me?” he smiled pulling her into his arms.
“There’s nothing to forgive. There wasn’t anything between us when you were with her right?” she asked.
“No” he immediately replied.
“Then lets just put it behind us” she suggested “and enjoy a nice lunch together”
Max smiled in agreement and once they reached the car park Max whisked them away for a very private and romantic lunch.

Part 38
“What are you smiling about?” Isabel asked Alex as she looked up at him over her magazine. Alex had just walked in the door and he had the cat that ate the canary look on his face.
“Well you my love are looking at the newest employer of Systems Go” he grinned back at her.
Isabel’s eyes widened as the magazine that had her full attention moments before dropped to the floor, all of a sudden Jennifer Anniston’s newest outfit wasn’t so appealing.
“Oh my god” she squealed.
The job in question was the closest thing to Alex’s dream job in New York. It was the job he wanted but never thought he would get and she was so happy for him.
“What happened?” he had only left that morning to have an interview.
“To tell you the truth I’m still a little unsure” he chuckled. “But I showed up for my interview and I was a nervous wreck until they started asking me all these questions about programming and I just got so caught up. I swear I was rambling on about java code for twenty minutes but something I said in there must have made sense because before I know it they’re shaking my hand and asking me did I want the job”
“Oh Alex” Isabel smiled as wrapped her arms around his shoulders “I’m so happy for you, and proud” she told him before planting a kiss on his lips.
“Lets celebrate” he smiled when they pulled apart.
“What did you have in mind?” she asked wiggling her eyebrows.
“Well yeah that” Alex blushed “but let’s call Liz, Max and Maria and go out to dinner,” he suggested.
“That sounds like a great idea” she agreed “I’ll go call them now”
***
Liz picked up the phone absently as she read over the notes in the file in front of her. “Liz Parker”
“Hi Liz” Isabel greeted her.
“Isabel?” she asked.
“Yep” she smiled “how’s you first day of work going?”
“Good” Liz smiled. After her nerves had settled down and her romantic lunch with Max, Liz had finally started to feel at home in her new office. All throughout the day people would knock on her door and introduce themselves and Liz had to admit that she hadn’t met a single person that she hadn’t like yet. Her meeting with Max had also been very productive. Tomorrow an add would be placed to hire a suitable receptionist for Liz and Ryan, one of the junior associates who would now be working under Liz. He was an enthusiastic guy who had a sound knowledge for the law and Liz knew that with a little guidance he would be a great divorce attorney in no time.
In no uncertain terms Liz Parker was excited.
“I really think I’m going to like it here Isabel” she told her.
“Good” Isabel smiled. “Not that I ever doubted you would”
Liz laughed at that “So what’s up?” she asked.
“Well Alex got the job at Systems and we thought it would be nice to go out and celebrate tonight and wondered if you and Max were busy?”
“He got it?” Liz asked.
“Yep” Isabel responded proudly. Isabel was completely proud and at the same time relieved that Alex had gotten the job. She hated the idea of him being unemployed, not that it mattered since Alex had been financially smart and could afford not to work for a little while. Isabel just knew that Alex was the type of guy who needed to work in the job he loved to be happy and god did she want him to be happy.
“Oh that’s so great” Liz replied happily “and dinner sounds great”
“Excellent so will you tell Max?” she asked.
“I sure will. See you at home”
“Bye Liz”
***
Liz smirked as she approached the internal door between hers and Max’s office. She hesitated before opening it, she wasn’t sure if she should knock or not. Deciding that she didn’t need to she opened it.
Max was sitting at his desk typing away on his laptop and was completely oblivious to the fact that Liz was watching him.
Liz made her way into the office quietly and studied his profile for a while. He had his jacket off now and his tie loosened and Liz thought he had never look sexier.
“You know” she spoke causing Max’s head to snap up to meet hers in surprise “you have to be the sexiest man I’ve ever seen” she told him.
Max leaned back in his leather chair and grinned at her. Liz also had lost her suit jacket and Max admired the way her shirt and skirt hugged her sexy body.
“Well you are the sexiest woman so I guess we’re a good match” he replied.
“I think you’re right” she agreed with a coy smile “want to marry me and have babies?” she asked playfully.
“Yes, definitely” Max smiled back “and we should definitely get started on that right away too”
Liz threw her head back and laughed, “you Mr. Evans have a one track mind and I love it”
“So are you out of here?” he asked her. It was already five o’clock and he doubted that she had enough work to keep her busy into the night considering it was only her first day..
“Without you?” she asked “not a chance”
Liz moved around the desk and when Max pushed his chair back in invitation she plopped down on his lap. “I still have work” he sighed as he pulled her against his body. He wanted nothing more than to say screw this work and leave the office with her but unfortunately it had to get done and there was no one else to do it but him.
“Oh” she smiled “are you too busy to join us for dinner?”
“Us?” he asked.
“Yes” she smiled. “Alex got the job at Systems Go so we’re going out to dinner to celebrate”
“That’s great” he smiled.
“Yeah. So…?”
“What time?” he asked. If he could get a couple more hours of work done then he would be able to join them and then hopefully spend the rest of the night wrapped in Liz’s arms.
“Seven?” she smiled hopefully.
“Done” he grinned. “Now get out of here and let me get some more work done and I’ll pick you up at seven” he said.
Leaning in Liz couldn’t resist kissing him. She teased him with her tongue and sucked on his bottom lip until he groaned and crushed her against him. Max’s hand sank into her hair as his mouth returned her kiss with as much ardor.
“That should keep you going” she whispered huskily when they pulled apart panting.
“Uh huh” he nodded. “Especially since I know there is a lot more to come,” he grinned.
“Only if you’re good,” she whispered.
“Oh I wont be good baby, I’ll be very, very bad,” he teased.
Liz shivered with anticipation “my house?” he asked her.
“Yep I’ll pack some things,” she told him. It would make it so much easier for her to stay with him now that they worked together.
Liz started backing out of the office then “okay I’ll see you tonight” she smiled.
“Oh wait” Max called out. He pulled his keys out of his pocket then “why don’t you take the car and then come back and get me at seven” he suggested.
“Are you sure?” she asked.
“Yes. At least that way I know you will get home safely” he told her.
Liz chuckled “Honey I’m a big girl and I’ve been taking the subway and cabs for years”
“I know but tonight you don’t have to and on the weekend we’ll go and get pick your car out” he smiled.
Liz felt her heart swell, Max was truly the most extraordinary man that she had ever met. “Thank you”
“Your welcome gorgeous. Now get out of here and let me get some work done,” he grinned.
***
Maria was on her way out the door when she collided with a hard chest.
“Oh god, Maria are you ok?” Michael asked, his hands had quickly gone out to clutch at her when she went falling backwards. He hadn’t expected the door to open and for Maria to come barreling at him so quickly.
“Yeah” she chuckled “yeah I’m fine”
“Good” he smiled his hands still secured around her waist. She felt so good in his arms and he didn’t want to let her go.
Maria cleared her throat feeling a little awkward that she was still clutching her to him. “How are you?” she asked.
Michael finally removed his hands and smiled at her “Good. You?”
“Ok” she replied with a small smile and a nod.
“I’m sorry were you going out?” he asked noticing for the first time that she had her bag in her hands.
“Um yeah dinner” she nodded.
“Oh ok” he said a little disappointed. He had hoped when he deiced to drop by unannounced that he might be able to convince her to go out with him again.
“See Alex chucked in his life in Boston and moved to New York and he got a new job today so we’re going out to celebrate” she explained.
“That’s great” Michael smiled. Isabel was like a sister to him and he knew that she had strong feelings for Alex.
“How about you?” she asked.
“Oh yeah I was just in the neighborhood” he shrugged.
“Oh really” she smiled obviously not buying his cool, calm and collected act at all.
“Yeah” he smiled.
“Well if you didn’t have plans why don’t you come?” she asked.
“You sure?” he asked.
“Yeah well that way I wont be the fifth wheel,” she told him.
“That would be great,” he said. They started waling towards his car then and Michael unconsciously placed his hand on the small of her back. Maria tensed when she first felt his hand but she quickly relaxed into his touch, which made Michael smile. He was almost sad when they reached his car and he had to remove his hand so she could get in.
“So where are we going?” he asked.
“Milano’s” she informed him.

Part 39
“Dinner was nice” Max said as he climbed into bed beside Liz.
They six of them had a great time that night at dinner as they drank, ate and celebrated Alex’s new job, but at the same time it wasn’t just celebrating the job it was about welcoming Alex to New York and into their fold. Because to Liz and Max that’s what it felt like they were now. A group, a fold, but it was the six of them. All brought together for different reasons but together all the same.
Liz rolled over and laid her head against Max’s chest “Yeah” she replied.
Max looked down at her in concern. She had been quiet ever since dinner and he was wondering what was on her mind. He knew that it had been the first time since she had seen Maria since the confession, but the two of them had seemed fine. Liz hadn’t brought it up at dinner and the two had talked quietly and laughed together.
They were both surprised when Maria had turned up with Michael and secretly hopefully that something was happening between their two friends after all.
“Hey” he said lifting her chin up so he could see her eyes “you ok?” he asked.
Liz bit her bottom lip and nodded “Yeah” she said. To tell you the truth she was fine. In fact she was better then fine she just had a few things on her mind and the need to get it off her chest was beginning to become too much.
“You’re not having seconds thoughts about work are you?” he asked worried. Max wanted Liz to be happy, although he would be very disappointed if she decided not to stay on at Evans he would deal with it if it were what she truly wanted.
Liz smiled “No not at all. In fact have I thanked you yet for all the trouble you’ve gone to, to make me feel welcome?” she asked as she leaned up and brushed her lips against his gently.
“I don’t believe you have,” he whispered back huskily as he rolled them until Liz was on top.
***
“Thanks for the ride” Maria said nervously as Michel pulled his car up out the front of her apartment. She knew that it was out of his way but he had insisted on bringing her home.
“No thank you for inviting me. I had a great time,” Michael replied.
“Me too,” Maria nodded.
“Good,” he whispered. “So maybe we could do it again sometime?”
Maria took a deep breath. Over the past week she had done nothing but think about her life and the things in it that she had no control over. There was a lot in her life that she needed to sort out and confront and she didn’t know if she was really ready to start something that she had no idea if she would be capable of finishing. It didn’t seem fair to Michael to lead him on, as much as she would like to.
“I would like that,” she started “but I don’t think it’s a good idea,” she finished.
Michael sighed. He thought he had made progress with Maria but ever step forward was like two steps back.
“I have some things going on in my life,” Maria started to explain. She believed that she at least owed him some type of explanation for her actions and behavior, even thought she had tried not too she knew she was sent him mixed signals.
“Things that I have tried to bury and forget but they don’t want to stay buried any longer,” she admitted. “I need to deal with those things”
“I could help” Michel offered which surprised her.
“I don’t think you could,” she said sadly. Boy did she wish he could help her. “As much as I would like for you to be able to this is something that I need to deal with myself. Some things happened to me in the past, and even though it’s not an excuse, it’s probably why I’ve treated you and other men in my life the way I have”
“Maria…”
“No let me finish” she interrupted him. “Hopefully I wont’ be like this forever and one day if you still wanted to we could be friends or maybe something more but I just don’t know”
“Maria” Michael started again. “I know I don’t really know what’s going but it sounds serious. Are you getting professional help?”
“Professional?” she asked.
“Are you seeing a psychiatrist?” he asked.
“Um no” she shook her head. The last thing she wanted was to sit there and talk to some random stranger about her problems. She would deal with this herself.
“Like I said I don’t know the full story but going from experience I think it would really help. When I was in college my roommate killed himself. Everyone suggested I get help but I wouldn’t listen. I almost flunked out of school before Max finally forced me to see someone. It helped.” He admitted.
“I don’t want to talk to a stranger…” she shook her head.
“I felt that way too but I couldn’t talk to Max either. Is there someone you can talk to?”
“I’ve talked to Liz,” she admitted.
Michel nodded that was a start at least. “Well that’s a good start but you really should consider talking to someone. I can recommend someone if you think you might consider it”
Maria wasn’t sure why but hearing Michael say that it was all right to talk to someone about your problems made her feel better. He had a better understanding of what she was going through then anyone and that was comforting.
“Thanks” she agreed. Maybe she would take his advice after all.
***
“Tonight was great. Thanks” Alex said as he kissed Isabel sweetly.
“You’re welcome” she grinned back. Got it was good to have him back in New York it was ridiculous that she had missed him so much.
“So I meant to ask you when you start?” she asked.
“Next Monday” Alex replied. He was so excited about his new job and if they had asked him to start the next day he would have.
“That will give me a week to get myself sort and maybe find an apartment,” he said.
Isabel sat up straighter then and looked at him “an apartment?” she asked.
Alex chuckled “Yeah I can bum on you and Liz forever” he said.
“Why not?” she wondered.
Alex looked at her more seriously then “are you serious?”
“Of course I am. Why would you need to go anywhere?” she hated the idea of him being away from her again. She knew she should talk to Liz before she said anything but she didn’t want Alex to go out and find an apartment and move out.
“Well because you live here with Liz and I don’t think she would want to live with a couple,” he explained.
“Liz spends most of her time at Max’s place anyway” she argued.
“Izzie” Alex sighed.
“No Alex I want you to stay here, to move in here and I’m sure Liz wont have a problem with it,” she cried.
“Well let’s talk to Liz about it first before we make any decisions, ok?” Alex compromised.
“Ok” Isabel agreed.
Their mouths came together in another sweet kiss then “I love you, Alex” Isabel sighed when they pulled apart. She had never been happier in her life than she was right now.
“I love you too” he replied.
***
“Oh god Liz” Man moaned as Liz sunk down on his cock. “You’re so wet,” he groaned.
Max’s hand trailed up her body as she rode him and cupped her breasts, teasing her nipples before he leant up and took on into his mouth.
“Max” Liz moaned out her approval.
“Hmm you feel soo good,” she told him and he did. His cock was big and hard and she slipped up and down him with the ease of an expert.
“God yes Liz… ahh baby” Max cried out as he felt his release approaching.
Liz began grinding down on him harder and Max’s hands moved her hips to help her movements.
“Yes Max…ahh MAX” Liz cried out as she came around him. Her walls tightened like a vise and Max groaned with pleasure before crying out with his own release.
“LIZ”
Liz’s collapsed against Max’s chest panting for air “that was wow” Max told her “I’ll have to redecorate the office more often if that’s what I’m going to get” he chuckled.
Liz smiled as she drew circles on his sweaty chest with her finger “Max…” she whispered.
“Yeah?” he replied looking down at her.
“I love you,” she breathed out so quietly that Max wasn’t quite sure he heard her right.
“What?” he asked.
Liz stiffened and she took a deep breath before she looked up. “I love you,” she said again.
Max’s breath caught in his throat. He couldn’t believe he was hearing the words out of her mouth. He was shocked.
Liz felt tears swell in her eyes over his reaction. Obviously he didn’t feel the same way.
“Um I’m just going to the bathroom,” she whispered out before rolling off him and rushing towards the bathroom.
As soon as the bathroom door shut Max closed his eyes and cursed silently “shit”. He knew he had hurt her by not saying anything back but he had been so taken back by her words. He had never expected Liz to confess that in a million years.
He sat up in the bed and waited for her to come out which Liz did about ten minutes later. He could tell immediately that she had been crying but she put her head down and her hair covered her face.
“Liz…” he started.
“Don’t,” she whispered sliding into the bed beside him. “You don’t have to say anything that’s now why I told you ok”
Max opened his mouth to respond. He wanted to say something didn’t she realise that? Max realised at that moment thought that she didn’t. That Liz Parker had no idea how he felt about her but he was determined to prove it to her. He would let it go tonight because when he told her how he felt he didn’t want her to think it was because she had said it first and he felt obligated to say it back. So with a plan forming in his mind Max lay back down and pulled Liz’s body close to him.
“Night” she said rolling over so her back was to him.
It broke Max’s heart to hear the hurt in her voice but he swore to himself that he would make it up to her.
He spooned behind her and wrapped his arms tightly around “Night beautiful” he whispered back.

Part 40
“Hey thanks for coming” Isabel greeted Liz as she sat down at the table. After her discussion with Alex the night before Isabel decided that she might as well just talk to Liz about Alex living with them straight away.
“Your welcome, it’s a nice opportunity for the two of us to just catch up anyway” Liz smiled as she took a seat. “It feel like ages since we’ve sat down and had a good conversation,” she laughed. Since Alex and Max had come into their life they had been spending a lot less time together. It had been a nice surprise when Isabel had rung and asked her to lunch it was also a good excuse for Liz to avoid Max.
Liz wouldn’t lie and deny that when Max hadn’t responded back when she had told him she loved him the night before that it hadn’t hurt. It hurt like hell and it still did. In hindsight she knew it wasn’t the right moment but she had needed him to know.
“So how are things?” Isabel asked.
“Good. I love work so far” she replied vaguely. The last thing Liz wanted to do was talk to Isabel about what was happening with Max.
“You sure you don’t seem yourself?” Isabel frowned.
Liz laughed bitterly “Is it that obvious?”
“Are you and Max fighting?” she asked concerned.
“No” Liz denied. “Nothing like that”
“Ok” Isabel relented. It was obvious that whatever was going on that Liz didn’t want to talk about it and she could respect that.
“How about you?” Liz asked wanting to change the subject.
“Great” Isabel smiled “Work is good and its wonderful having Alex here”
Liz smiled in genuine happiness for Isabel. “That’s great Iz”
“Which brings me to one of the reasons I wanted to have lunch, other than the fact I just wanted to see my best friend”
“Ok” Liz said.
“Well Alex mentioned getting his own apartment last night and it got me thinking”
“Uh you want to move out with Alex” Liz assumed.
“What! No” Isabel shook her head. “I love our apartment and I definitely don’t want to move,” she told Liz. “I also don’t want Alex to leave so I was wondering what you would think about Alex moving in with us permanently”
“Oh of course” Liz immediately said.
“So you don’t mind?” Isabel asked.
“No. Lets face it I’m hardly there anyway and we have the space,” she said. “I like the idea of having Alex close by” It would be great to live near her best friend again after so long of living apart.
“Thank you so much Liz,” Isabel cried getting up from her seating and moving around to hug her.
“You’re welcome” Liz smiled back “besides doesn’t every girl deserve a fairy tale ending” she laughed but deep down she wondered if she would ever be as lucky as Isabel was to find a guy who loved her back.
***
Across town Max was just getting ready for lunch and decided to duck his head into Liz’s office and see if she wanted to grab a sandwich with him. He was surprised when he opened the door to find it empty so went outside to ask the receptionist if she knew where Liz was.
“Do you know where Liz is?” he asked Sandra.
“She left for lunch a half hour ago Mr. Evans” she replied.
Max bit back his frown of confusion “thank you”
He wondered where Liz had gone and why she hadn’t come into see him. She hadn’t mentioned anything about meeting anyone for lunch that morning so he could only assume she went to lunch herself. When they had woken up that morning things between them were awkward. Max wanted to talk about what had happened but it was very clear that Liz didn’t.
Max hated the distance that was between them right now and he knew he couldn’t wait any longer to put his plans into action so instead of going out for lunch he asked his secretary Margaret to get him sandwich and he went back into his office to make a few calls.
***
Maria looked at the phone for the twentieth time that day and cursed herself for not just picking it up and dialing.
Michael had given her the name of a psychiatrist that he had used the night before and encouraged her to call. After a lot of consideration she had decided that he was right. Even though she knew she could talk to Liz anytime she needed to, Liz didn’t have the experience to help her through this and it was unfair to expect her to take it all on her shoulders.
But more importantly she had realized something, she liked Michael and she didn’t want to loose him because of secrets from the past.
So with a shaking hand Maria picked up the phone and dialed the number.
“Dr. Sierras Office” a friendly voice greeted her.
“Hello” she said nervously “I wanted to book an appointment” she informed her.

“Thanks for this Roger I really appreciate it” Max smiled into the phone. “I know it was really last minute of me”
“It’s not a problem Max, really” Roger assured him.
Max hung up the phone just in time for Margaret to walk in with his sandwich. “Thank you Margaret I don’t know what I’d do without you,” he told her.
“You’d probably starve” the older women joked before turning to leave just as quickly as she came.
“Margaret?” Max called out stopping her departure.
“Yes Max?” she asked.
“Is Liz Parker back from lunch yet?” he wondered. He was trying to seem professional but he knew his secretary wasn’t stupid, she had seen the looks between the two when she had walked in on them in his office.
“I don’t believe so,” she informed him.
“Thank you” Max sighed.
Liz was walking past Max’s office as Margaret walked out and the old women smiled at her “Hi Liz”
“Hi Margaret” she replied and kept walking.
“Liz, Max has been looking for you,” she told her.
“He has?” Liz asked surprised.
“Yes. He’s available now if you want to go in,” she informed her.
“Um ok” Liz nodded. The last thing she wanted to do was see Max but it would be a little hard to explain that to his secretary.
Liz knocked hesitantly on the door and entered when Max called for her to come in.
“Liz” he said surprised when he looked up from his sandwich.
“Hi” she replied.
“I thought you were at lunch”
“I just got back,” she said. “Were you looking for me?” she asked him then.
“Yeah I was going to see if you wanted to grab a sandwich but you weren’t there,” he said.
“I met Isabel,” she explained.
“Oh ok” he smiled relieved that she did in fact have plans and wasn’t just avoiding him.
Feeling more comfortable by the second Liz took a seat across from Max “Alex is moving is with us” she told him.
Max’s eyes widened in surprise “Wow”
Liz smiled “I know I’m so happy for him and Isabel they’re so in love” the minute the words left Liz’s mouth she regretted them. They just served as a reminder that her and Max certainly weren’t in the same boat.
Standing up she picked up her bag “I should go. I have work to get back too” she lied.
“Liz?” Max said standing up. He didn’t want her to go he could tell that she was upset with him and it was killing him.
“I’ll leave you too it” she tried to smile as she backed up towards the door.
“Please don’t leave” Max pleaded with her.
Liz’s hand stopped on the door handle “not this way” Max added as he moved around the desk and towards where Liz was standing.
Once Max reached her and pulled on her hand and tugged her towards the leather couch in the corner, sitting down he pulled Liz onto his lap.
“Look at me?” he asked lifting her chin so he could see her eyes, which were already brimming with tears.
Using the pads of his fingers Max cupped Liz’s face and wiped her tears away. “You mean the world to me” he whispered, “Please don’t doubt that”
“But you don’t love me?” she cried.
“I never said that, never” Max said vehemently. “You just caught me by surprise last night” he admitted. “Let me make it up to you?” he pleaded with her then.
Liz looked up at him with a look of unsureness in her eyes; she wondered how he believed he could make up for not loving her back.
“I made plans already” he coaxed.
“Ok” Liz nodded. She knew it was unfair to punish him because he wasn’t emotionally in the same place she was. He was still committed to their relationship and she knew that he cared for her deeply he showed her how much every single day.
“Good” Max grinned. “I’ll pick up you at 6 o’clock and make sure you pack something for over night” he told her.
“Why? I have everything at your house already” Liz questioned.
“Just humor me” he smiled.
“Ok” Liz smiled back. They snuggled in each other’s arms for a few more minutes before Liz reluctantly pulled back.
“I have to get back to work or I’ll never get out of here in time” she told him.
“Then get back to work,” he instructed teasingly, which caused Liz to giggle.
“What should I wear tonight?” Liz asked as a second thought.
“Oh nothing would be good” Max grinned.
Liz hit him playfully “Seriously”
“I was very serious,” he continued.
“Max!” she whined.
“Something fairly dressy” he informed her.
“Really?” she asked, excitement lasing her voice.
“Really”
