I told you I'd have a new chapter up! Thanks so much to everyone who was reading this, and left feedback. I feel terrible that it has taken me so long to update...but I have and I hope to update again soon.

Now enough of me and on with the story...

Chapter 10

Max just looked up at Liz with tears still rolling down his face. Liz had one hand on the door, and the other on the molding of the doorway, as if she were attempting to block him from entering her room. However, when Max looked up at her and she saw the defeated look on his face, all of the anger she had felt for the past two and a half years seemed to disappear as she realized that he needed her right then.

“Max?” she asked in a gentler tone looking into his eyes.

Max looked at her and while trying to hold back more tears from falling, said in barely above a whisper, “Erin left me…for another guy.”

As soon as Liz heard that, she knew she couldn’t ignore him. It must have taken him a lot to show up at her door, so the least she could do was help her once best friend. In an instant, her arms were off the door and around Max, as she embraced him in a caring hug. Max could no longer hold back the new tears, and just let them fall freely as he cried on Liz’s shoulder as she brushed the back of his head.

“Shh. It will be okay Max, don’t worry. Everything is going to be okay.” Liz whispered to him to try to calm him down. “C’mon, let’s go inside.” Max nodded against her shoulder before Liz lead him into her room and he sat on her bed. She grabbed her desk chair and pulled it over so she sat across from him.

After a few moments of silence, Max wiped away his tears and apologized to her. “I’m so sorry to show up here Liz, it’s just…I didn’t know where else to go. I know that we haven’t been on the best of terms lately but…”

“Max,” Liz interrupted, “don’t worry about that right now. I’m glad you came to me. I know how hard this must be.” They just looked at each other and sat in comfortable silence for a moment before Max dropped his head to stare at his hands. Liz could sense he was slightly uncomfortable so she decided to break the silence. “Do you wanna talk about what happened?”

Max looked up at her, his face changing, and said bitterly, “With us or with Erin?”

Liz winced at what he said and she felt a slight pang in her chest. She didn’t realize how much he resented her for breaking the chord between them. However, pressing on, she put on a brave face and said, “Well I meant Erin, but if you want to we might as well talk about us as well.”

With a scoff, Max shook his head, got off her bed and headed for the door, only to be stopped by Liz’s arm on his own.

“Max wait.” She was now standing and released his arm when she saw him hesitantly turn around. “You obviously came here…”

“Liz don’t” Max interrupted in a fierce tone. “I came here because at one point I thought you were my best friend, and you would be there for me no matter what. But apparently I was wrong.” He sighed, and in a calmer tone continued, “Right now, you’re the only one who knows my situation because I haven’t really made friends here since I was visiting Erin.”

Liz was close to tears after hearing what he had to say. “Max…”

“Why Liz?” he asked softly, not looking in her eyes.

“Why what Max?” she asked him back.

“Why did you get so mad at me that day? I’ve always found it hard to believe that me talking to Kyle would have made you hate me.” He looked up at her and Liz saw that he too had fresh tears pooling in his eyes, however these didn’t seem to be over Erin--these seemed to be over their lost friendship.

“Max I never hated you…I don’t think I ever could.” She stated simply.

“Then why? Why did you start ignoring me? I thought we were best friends.”

“We were!” Liz yelled.

“Then what the fuck happened?!” He yelled back, throwing his arms out in frustration.

Liz was silent. She didn’t know how to tell him that the reason she acted the way she did was because she was in love with him and couldn’t bare to see him with another girl. Luckily, just when Max was about to say something else to her, her cell phone rang. She walked over to it and saw that it was Kyle, and answered it.

“Hello?”

“Hi is this Liz?”[/b] a female voice asked her.

“Yeah who the hell is this?” She asked irritated.

“Oh my name is Tess…you’ve probably never heard of me though right?” she said in a ditzy way.

“No. Who are you and why are you calling me?” She asked again, this time getting angry.

“Well, I’m one of Kyle’s closest friends at UNM. In fact, I’m so close to him that I’ve been fucking him for the past three months, and let me tell you that you are definitely missing out.” Tess stated matter-of-factly.

“EXCUSE ME?!” Liz screamed forgetting that Max was in the room. “Is he there right now?” she asked after a moment of silence.

“Um…well…”

“Put him on the fucking phone right now!” Liz yelled. She then heard shuffling going on before she heard a scruffy ‘hello’ from Kyle.

“You are the biggest asshole I have ever met in my life.”

“Liz…”

“No! Now I see why you wanted to take a little break.”

“Come on Baby. She was just kiddin. You know I love you.” he said in a slightly slurred voice.

“Are you drunk?!”

“Nooo! Why would you think that babe?”

“Kyle if she’s telling the truth I swear to God…”

“Liz Liz Liz…I just miss you that’s all. She’s just there to help my needs when you’re across the country.”

Silent tears started streaming down Liz’s face as she heard his drunken confession. “Oh your needs? I’m sorry, then it’s okay.”

“I knew you’d understand.”

“Yeah I do understand. And ya know what Kyle? I understand so much that I just want to forget being on a break…because we’re through.” She said and hung up before collapsing on her bed in tears.

Max witnessed the entire thing and went over to sit on her bed to try to comfort her in some way. However, as soon as she felt the bed dip, she stiffened, and then sat up straight.

“Oh my God Max I’m so sorry. I completely forgot you were here. I’m sorry you had to witness that.” She said wiping her eyes.

Max just smiled, then put an arm around Liz pulling her into his side as they sat on her bed side by side. “Hey don’t worry about it Mon.”

Liz chuckled and put her head on his shoulder. “Thanks Chand.”

They sat like that in comfortable silence before Max finally said something. “Ya know, now that Monica and Chandler are dating, we might have to think of new nicknames for each other.”

Liz just looked up at him. “We can’t just change our nicknames Max. We’ll just have to pretend that they aren’t dating.” She said and proceeded to stick her tongue out at him, causing him to start laughing.

After their laughter calmed down Max asked, “So you and Kyle broke up too?”

“Yeah…that was some slut that he’s been fucking for the past three months. God I can’t believe I didn’t realize he was cheating on me. I’m such an idiot.”

Max pulled away and forced her to look at him then. “Liz you are definitely not an idiot. Shitty things happen to people who don’t deserve it, that’s all this is. You’ll get over it.”

“And so will you.” Liz said offering him a small smile.

They spent the next few hours talking about what happened with their ex’s, their previous conversation about what happened between them forgotten for the moment. They got out all of their anger and hurt at what both Erin and Kyle had done to them. It was nice for them to get it out. Liz hadn’t told anyone how much her and Kyle had been fighting recently, and telling Max made her feel like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She didn’t realize how much she missed talking to Max until right then, and she was happy that they were able to get right back into the swing of things.

“It’s getting late, I better head back to my room. Thanks for being here for me Liz.” Max said as he got off her bed and headed for the door.

“No Max, thank you.”

They smiled at each other before Max reached for the doorknob and left.

Once he was gone, Liz fell back onto her bed taking in everything that happened tonight. She knew that he would bring up why she got so mad at him again, and she didn’t know how to go about telling him the truth. She didn’t want to lie to him because despite the fact that they haven’t talked in over two years, she knew he could still tell when she was lying. She had to think of something though, and she had to think of it fast.

TBC…I promise!
