Distorted Reality(CC, TEEN) Chapter 5 3/13/07 [WIP]

Post by Amanda »

Title: Distorted Reality

Author: AMANDA.

Rating: Teen

Disclaimer: I do not own the show Roswell and or any of the characters.

A/N: I always wonder what it would be like to enter into your favourite TV show as yourself and just cause mayhem and have a little fun playing with the characters minds and such. I also began writing a story called Dual Personalities, a Pirates of the Caribbean story with a similar storyline. I hope you guys like this story and leave me lots of nice comments <3

Summary: After the death of her boyfriend, Zack Adams, Stephanie Atwood is in depression mode. While visiting her grandmother Stephanie finds a device hidden in her grandmother's attic. One thing leads to the next and she finds herself in the TV show Roswell. With the episode at her finger tips what will Stephanie do?

Chapter One

The sun was falling behind the clouds, casting an eerie glow on the city. Stephanie lay sprawled on her bed, hugging the covers tightly. She hadn’t left that spot since last night, after Zack’s funeral. She heard knocking coming from her door but didn’t move or speak. She didn’t want to be bothered; she wanted to stay forever in his memory.

“Stephanie, its Victoria. Let me in, maybe we can talk, it’ll help,”

No matter how many people would come and talk to her, try and make her feel better no one knew the pain she was going through. No one knew how much she and Zack were in love, they didn’t understand how it felt to loose their soul mate. But Stephanie knew. The feeling felt like it would never go away. It felt like a heavy rock was permanently placed in her stomach, weighing her down. Her hands traced the lace from the pillow cover, as warm tears slid down her cheek. She didn’t care what was happening in the world around her, she wanted to sleep, dream, and live in her dream of her and Zack happy together, the way it was supposed to be.

*

The phone rang disturbing her dream and bringing her back to reality. Stephanie opened her eyes and reached for her phone, almost knocking over her water bottle.

“Hello?” she asked groggily.

“Stephanie sweetheart, it’s so good to hear your voice again,” It was her grandmother. If there was one person in the world she could talk to, it was her.

A tiny smile formed at the edge of her lips, “Hi grandma,”

“I don’t know if you’re up for the challenge but I have some homemade cookies here with your name on it,”

“Thanks grandma but I don’t feel hungry,”

“It’s alright I’ll just get Bruno to eat it all up. Stephanie, I haven’t seen you in months, how about you come over and we just talk, like we used to?”

She couldn’t tell her grandmother she’d rather stay in bed all day, maybe she could leave the house, for a little bit. “Okay, I’ll be there in a second,”

*

“Stephanie!” Her grandmother pulled her into a hug as soon as she had opened the door. “My, you look so grown up and sophisticated,” She looked at the black car pulled up in her driveway. “Already know how to drive and everything,” She cupped Stephanie’s face in her hands and kissed her forehead. “You’re already an adult,”

Stephanie smiled, “I’m only 17 grandma,” Her grandmother took her hand and led her to the living room.

“Sit, and take a cookie,”

Stephanie grabbed a cookie and sat on the old beige couch. She remembered it being in that same spot in the same room since she was 8. She broke off a tiny piece of the cookie and attempted to eat it but she stopped and looked down at the floor. She could feel the tears starting to form; she tried desperately to stop herself from crying. She didn’t want to be sad around her grandmother.

“Stephanie dear, you can tell me anything,” Her grandmother’s voice was quiet and soothing like a lullaby.

Shaking Stephanie spoke through tears, “He’s gone grandma! He was only 18 and he died, it’s not fair!” She covered her mouth with her hand and began to cry.

“You loved him didn’t you?” Her grandmother asked, she moved from the armchair to sit next to Stephanie.

Stephanie nodded, “When we were together, I felt… I felt at peace, happy.” Stephanie began to wipe her tears but her grandmother stopped her.

“Those tears are special,”

Stephanie smiled, she was glad she had decided to come and see her grandmother. Stephanie took a deep breath. “I don’t know what to do; life doesn’t feel worth living for, the one thing I was living for died,”

“You have your family, and friends who care deeply about you and want to see you happy,”

“I know, but I don’t think I can be happy again,” Stephanie stood up and ran her hands through her brown curly hair, “I don’t understand why this had to happen, why he did this to me, why’d he have to die and leave me?”

Her grandmother stood up and hugged Stephanie as she cried in her grandmother’s arms.

*

Her grandmother came into the living room carrying a tray of some more small cookies and two cups filled with tea. Her grandmother was a firm believer that tea could help people through the darkest of times. Stephanie sat up; a woolen blanket was wrapped around her. She reached for the green cup and took a sip. She didn’t care much for tea but she knew her grandmother was trying so hard to help her.

“Tastes good,” Stephanie said, going in for another.

Her grandmother sat down looking around the room. She looked at Stephanie and smiled, “I keep my sowing kit upstairs in the attic, would you mind getting it for me? I don’t walk as well as I used to.”

Stephanie placed the cup back onto the try and stood. Maybe a little walking would help clear her mind. Besides, the smell of her grandmother’s perfume and the scent of the candles burning in the living room were starting to give her a headache, although it could have been the result of her crying as well.

She walked up the stairs, it creaking as she continued on. The house was small but cozy; she always felt at home whenever she’d visit. She switched on the light as she made her way up another flight of stairs and into the attic. Like the house the attic was small but exceptionally clean. Stephanie made her way past a few boxes of old records, spotting the sowing kit on a hall table near the wall at the end of the room. She grabbed the kit and was about to leave when something caught her attention. A device that reminded her of one of those security devices that required you to place your hand on it so it would open the door. She dropped the kit on the table and walked towards it. She could see a thin layer of dust on the top of the device. It probably was the only thing in the room that wasn’t clean to a tee. She switched it on and watched as a bright green light glowed from the screen. She placed her hand on the metal, feeling as if someone was controlling her, taking over her body. Another bright green light flashed and Stephanie began to feel faint and dizzy. She tried to hold on to something and call for help but her legs went weak and her eyes shut as she fell to the floor.

A/N: I hope you like this part! I wanted to write some more but I have to go to bed. I'm really tired. = ) Good night.

Chapter Two

‘Lady…lady…ugh, I had to be stuck with the drugged teenagers…’
The voice sounded distant at first, but became louder as she regained consciousness. Stephanie lifted her head from the table, wiping off some drool from the side of her mouth and moving her hair from her face. She still felt a little weak. Her brown eyes looked up at the blonde waitress with a notepad in her hand, starring at her. Stephanie gasped, she looked around the room. She wasn’t in her grandmother’s attic that was for sure. She looked up at the wall. The huge painting of the green aliens covered the wall; she looked back at the waitress. No, it couldn’t be.

“Are you ready to order or what?” The girl tapped her pen on the notebook, looking back towards the back of the Café as another blonde waitress made her way through the back doors.

Stephanie felt like she was about to hyperventilate. “Where’s the washroom?” She asked trying to catch her breath.

The waitress sighed and pointed towards the green door at the far back of the room. Stephanie stood up quickly, a little too quickly. She felt the blood rush to her head. She closed the door behind her and faced the mirror. She looked so distant and tired; it made her look older than she was. She ran her hands over her face, desperately trying to wake herself up. She must have dozed off when she fainted in her grandmother’s attic that’s all. She pinched her arm, “Ow!” she cried. It wasn’t working, she wasn’t waking up. She opened the door slightly, and peeked through the opening, she wasn’t sure how or why but somehow she was in the show Roswell.

*

She left the washroom as soon as she felt strong again. Taking a seat in an empty booth and looking over the menu that was left there. She might as well get something to eat. She dug her hand in her stripped sweater and pulled out a twenty. ‘well at least I have some money with me,’ she dug into her sweater again and found nothing, ‘Great a twenty? That’s all? What can I get with a twenty?’ Another waitress walked up to her, it wasn’t the same one as before. Stephanie got the feeling that she had enough of Stephanie for one night.

Stephanie looked at the twenty, and then looked uneasily back up at the waitress, “I guess I’ll have some fries.”

“Fries it is,” The girl walked behind the counter and gave the guy working the grill her order. Stephanie caught the boy’s eye and a cool shiver ran down her back.

Stephanie looked up at the clock, it read 11:34 pm. She had no idea where she’d go after this. It’s not like she knew anyone here. Well, she did but they didn’t know her, it was complicated. The waitress returned with her fries and Stephanie gave her the twenty.

“Wow, all that tip for me?” The waitress snatched the twenty.

“Actually I need all the change,” Stephanie replied flatly. She couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. It was normal for anyone to feel nervous in her situation, not that many people had been in her situation. It’s not everyday someone randomly gets sent into a TV show.

The waitress frowned, “Fine,”

The waitress returned with her change, “Is that all?”

Stephanie shrugged, “Yeah,”

The waitress, Courtney, walked away and to the back of the Café. She hadn’t seen Liz so far, she must have a day off. She took a bite of the fries. It was her first meal, if you could call it a meal, she had since Zack’s funeral… and then it hit her. The memories came flooding back and she suddenly felt sick. She stopped eating; she heard some arguing coming from the back of the Crash Down and guessed it was Michael and Maria. At least they had each other; they could argue and then make up. Stephanie didn’t have that option anymore. Maria came strolling out from the back, the expression on her face told everything, she wasn’t happy.

“We’re closing,” she said to Stephanie as she walked towards the Café doors. Stephanie grabbed her box of fries.

“Don’t I get a bag or something?” she asked Maria. Maria stood there and crossed her arms.
“Fine I’ll just carry them like this,”

*

The night air was cool against Stephanie’s soft warm skin. She was happy she had on her light sweater. She munched on some fries in between walking. She didn’t like it that she was by herself at night, in Roswell. Anyone or anything could come up behind her and… well, do who knows what to her. She finished eating the fries and threw the package on the floor. The sound of a car resounded in her head as Stephanie turned to look, her hair flying everywhere. It was a police car, what looked like the sheriffs car. Stephanie groaned, she had no choice, she could either sleep out on the streets tonight and for who knows how many more days, or she could go and talk to Sheriff Valenti and hope for the best.

Stephanie walked up to the edge of the side walk and waved her hands in the air, hoping she caught his attention. To her liking she watched as the car started to slow down and stop beside her. The driver’s window lowered, revealing Sheriff Valenti, wearing the same dark shades Stephanie noticed he wore too often. A shiver ran down her spine, he always seemed a little creepy to her when she watched the DVDs but now, face to face, he was much more.

“What’s a young girl like yourself doing alone at a time like this?” he asked, taking off his shades. His icy blue eyes watching her.

She hadn’t thought of what to say. She couldn’t tell him the truth; she’d be on her way to the crazy house for sure if she did. Stephanie smiled, “I kind of wasted my money on drinks and now I have nothing to use on a hotel or anything… basically I have no where to go,” she added with a slur, just to make her act seem authentic. She wasn’t sure if he bought it.

“How old are you?”

“18,” she lied, she’d be 18 sooner or later.

“Do you have a name?”

Stephanie considered lying but it wouldn’t matter, no one knew her, she could say anything she wanted, “Stephanie Atwood,”

He got out of the car and opened the passenger’s door, “Get in and I’ll see what I can do for you,”

A/N: I wrote Chapter three for you guys so here it is. I hope you like this chapter, more to come tomorrow I promise. :)
Thank you to uw51 and KatnotKath for your lovely comments! <3

Chapter Three

Surprisingly Valenti hadn’t said much during the drive. He was busy keeping his eyes on the road, and his mind on other things. Stephanie guessed finding out that Max, Michael and Isabel were aliens really did change him, maybe for the better. After finding out that the sheriff’s station had no room for Stephanie to stay, Valenti had offered her some money to stay the night at a local hotel.

“Oh, thanks but I don’t really know my way around here. I kind of came with some friends from out of town and they ditched me,” She said a little too fast. He was coming onto her she knew it.

“Right, well until you can find your friends again, you can stay with me and my son and a friend of ours, Tess,”

“Tess?” Stephanie blurted out by accident. Tess wasn’t exactly her favourite character and if this, what ever this is, was real, her powers were real too. The idea of living under the same roof with an alien… with Tess, didn’t sit too well with Stephanie.

Valenti raised his eyebrow, “Is there a problem?”

Stephanie shook her head, “Nope, no problem. Thank you,”

*

The Valenti household had that Bachelor pad look but it smelled somehow like wild flowers, a fresh, sweet scent that Stephanie never would have guessed she’d find in a place like this. Valenti held the door open for her as she slowly walked in, making a mental note of the room. The house was dark, except for a dim light passing through the darkness, located in the hallway at the far end of the house.

“Kyle!” Valenti yelled. He took off his jacket and threw it onto the couch. Stephanie considered doing the same but second that motion.

Following Valenti through the hallway she wondered what she’d stumble upon. The door was open to Kyle’s room and inside Tess sat on the single bed while Kyle stood talking to her. The sight of Stephanie and Kyle’s dad made Kyle jump slightly.

“Dad!” Kyle exclaimed, running his hand through his hair and moving aside so that his father and the girl he didn’t recognize could come in.

“Tess, Kyle, this is Stephanie. She’ll be staying here for a while, it’s only temporary,” Valenti said introducing the new girl.

Kyle laughed, “Oh, right. That’s what you said about this one,” Kyle looked at Tess then back at his father. When he caught Stephanie looking at him he blushed. “Sorry, it’s nice to meet you,”

“I think it might be best if she stays with Tess,” Valenti said, nodding to Tess. He didn’t want anything to go wrong, the last thing he needed right now was for Tess to use her powers in front of a human, then they’d be in even more trouble. Still he found Stephanie’s actions to be somewhat suspicious. Roswell was a small enough town and he didn’t remember ever seeing the girl before. She came to him and told him she had no money and needed somewhere to stay. That alone was suspicious. A part of him truly felt sorry for her, he knew what it was like to be a teenager, you’d do things without thinking about the consequences but a part of him felt like she had come to him for a reason and that the little act she was playing was a lie. He wanted to stay around to find out what was going on.

Tess stood up revealing the wall behind her. There was a pink Z painted on the wooden wall and Stephanie suddenly had a feeling she knew which episode she was in.

“There’s not much room but I could sleep on the floor if you like,” The words took Stephanie by surprise. She didn’t remember Tess being that nice. Stephanie smiled politely and shook her head in refusal.

“No, no it’s okay I’ll sleep on the floor, it’s only temporary right? Besides I sleep better on the floor,” Stephanie added.

“But-“ Tess was cut off by the sound of knocking coming from the front door.

“I’ll get it,” Kyle made his way past his father and towards the front door.

Stephanie knew already who’d be on the other side. It was Liz; Liz was coming to talk to Tess about her plan. The plan that would help bring Max and Tess closer together. Stephanie felt like there was something stuck in her throat. She knew it must have been difficult for Liz to discuss it with Tess let alone go through with it. If only there was something she could do, something that could help Liz stay with Max, but what?

She heard the front door open and heard Liz’s fragile voice tell Kyle she needed to speak with Tess. Stephanie took a deep breath, this was it Liz’s plan was about to unfold, unless…

“Ouch!” One of Kyle’s lanterns that sat on the shelf suddenly fell over and broke into large, sharp pieces of glass, one of which cut Tess’s foot as she accidentally stepped on a shard. Stephanie gasped in surprise and amazement. She didn’t know what had happened, she was just concentrating and hoping that something would happen to slow Tess from going to see Liz and it did, the lantern fell and now Tess was hurt. It wasn’t the ideal situation Stephanie would have come up with but it would do for the time being.

Valenti immediately moved towards Tess, “You okay?”

Tess limped her way back over to the bed and sat down. Taking off her shoe, revealing the shard of glass stuck in her foot, blood was already starting to form. Valenti bent down and took a look at it.

“Kyle could you bring me some rubbing alcohol and some bandages please,” Valenti said.

Stephanie couldn’t help but smile, her plan was going to work, there was no way Tess would go through with Liz’s plan tonight.

“And be careful there’s glass on the floor,” Valenti looked at Stephanie, “Could you go and grab the dust pant, it’s under the sink in the kitchen.”

Stephanie nodded and made her way out of the room, passing by Kyle and a confused looking Liz. Stephanie caught Liz’s eye and smiled. The dust pan was under the sink just like he had said. She grabbed it and carried it back to the now crowded room.

“I have to talk to Tess, alone, it’s important,” Liz announced, looking at Tess’s now bandaged foot.

Stephanie excused herself past Liz and bent down and began to sweep the big shards into the pan, while still listening to the on going conversation.

“I understand that but she’s hurt.” Valenti said placing his hand on Tess’s shoulder. “That was a mighty big cut, what happened?”

Stephanie finished cleaning up and stood up, she wasn’t sure what Tess thought had happened.

Tess sighed, looking down at the floor where the glass once was, “I don’t know, it was an accident, the lamp fell and broke,” she looked up at Stephanie.

Stephanie nodded, “It just fell,” She looked up at the shelf. But there was no way it could have fell off the shelf without some kind of help. “I better go and throw this out,”

“I know you’re hurt Tess but it’s important, please,” Liz asked, it almost sounded like she was begging.

Tess nodded but gave Liz a questioning look, “The cuts not that bad, we can talk outside,”

Stephanie felt all her hope deplete. Her plan didn’t work and now Tess was about to aid Liz with her own plan. And then it hit her, she understood why she was here, she needed to help Liz and Max stay together, the challenge wouldn’t be so unproblematic.

A/N: Here's the next little bit for Chapter four. There'll probably be a Part 2 of Chapter Four, just to let you all know. I hope you all like this little part, I loved writing this part. Comments always welcomed and loved. :D

Chapter Four

Kyle shifted his position on the couch, awkwardly trying to find a comfortable arrangement. He sat there, with Stephanie, for the past half hour, neither of them spoke. Kyle would occasionally flick through channels on the television, but nothing seemed to catch his attention. Finally, he decided it was his duty to break the silence.

He shifted towards her, but quickly shifted back when he saw her reaction, “Look, I don’t care who you are, but I think I deserve an explanation of why you’re here, living in my house,” His dark brown eyes looking up at her. He watched as she looked away from him and stood up, slowly walking back and forth as if contemplating what to acquaint him with.

Kyle did the same, standing up and walking up to her. If what she was here for involved him or his family, including his Martian family, he wanted to know, he needed to know. “What is it?”

Stephanie pondered a moment. She didn’t know what to do. She wanted to tell Kyle the truth, but he’d think she’d gone crazy or worse, he’d think she was an alien or someone who was after all of them. She could lie again, but it would only be time before he put everything together. She couldn’t even explain the broken lamp, she wasn’t even sure if it was her who made the glass break and harm Tess, none of which had helped. It seemed like either way, there would be some kind of consequence to pay and she wasn’t sure which one was the better choice.

She turned around to look at Kyle, his brow furrowed the way it did whenever he was listening attentively to something important. Stephanie relaxed a little, all the muscles in her body feeling lighter, making it easier for her to breathe. “You might not like what you here,” She said, trying to spare her some more time to think.

Kyle shook his head, “I’ll take my chances,”

Stephanie closed her eyes for a moment, reciting the words, ‘there’s no place like home’, over and over again in her head. When she opened her eyes she was still there. ‘Damn, I thought that would work,’ “Kyle…”

“Please don’t tell me you’re another one of those Martians, as if my life couldn’t get anymore complicated,” he slumped himself back down on the couch, there was a loud screech.

“Need a new sofa?” Stephanie asked smirking.

Kyle smirked, mimicking her, “Enough with the crap, you’re one of them aren’t you? You’re an alien!”

Stephanie sighed; she had to tell him what he wanted to hear, “Yes Kyle, I’m an alien,”

“I knew it!” He exclaimed happily, and then sat bat down, his face burrowed in his hands. “Jeez, not another one,”

“I told you, you wouldn’t like it,” Stephanie stated simply, slowly moving away from Kyle and towards the front doors.

“Where are you going?” Kyle asked, jumping off from the couch and pointing his finger at her, like a 6 year old who caught their older sister stealing a cookie from the cookie jar.

“I was going to get some fresh air,”

“No you’re not, you have to stay here,” he grabbed her arms and dragged her over to the couch. He sat her down and looked at her nervously. “Do something,” he said biting his thumbnail.

Stephanie frowned, “Do what?”

“Use your alien powers,” He demanded. Stephanie had a feeling he wouldn’t let her leave unless she did something spectacular.

“If you don’t let me go I’ll be forced to use my alien powers on you,” She replied.

“You wouldn’t… would you?”

She smiled.

“Okay fine, just a small little thing, I need to know if this is all happening and that it’s not a dream,” he said.

“You and me both,” Stephanie whispered. If it was her who had knocked over the lamp, maybe she could do it again. “Alright,” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, concentrating, just hoping that something would happen to make Kyle believe she was some alien.

“Hey what the hell!” Kyle exclaimed, making Stephanie open her eyes.

Kyle was bent over reaching for his sweat pants that now lay on the living room floor. He pulled them up in a hurry, his cheeks flushed.

Stephanie looked away, attempting not to laugh, “Pants too big?” she asked, stiffing a giggle.

“Very funny,” He said.

“I think it is,” Stephanie shrugged, “I warned you. So you believe me now?”

“Yeah, yeah. Just don’t EVER do that again,”

She didn’t know how long he’d buy into it, or if he’d tell anyone, and that would create a problem, “Kyle, you can’t tell anyone okay? Please.”

Kyle walked over to the couch and lay down, starring at the ceiling, “Why am I such an alien magnet?”

Stephanie moved off from the couch and knelt down beside Kyle, she placed her right hand on his arm which caused him to look at her. She didn’t look dangerous or a threat in any way, she looked sad and a little desperate too. He didn’t know what he was getting himself into, but when he looked into her honey colored eyes, he felt calm and somehow, safe.

“Please Kyle, I can’t do this by myself,” she whispered. “I think this might be the only way I can go back home,” he could hear her voice shake.

Kyle took her hand in his, “What’s the plan?”

She smiled, a tear falling from her eye, “To help Liz and Max stay together,”

“Max loves Liz, what makes you think they’ll fall apart?” He asked, “Tess?”

“Look I can’t explain everything to you right now but you have to trust me okay? Just trust me,” They both looked down at their hands, and Stephanie pulled back releasing her hand from his grip.

“Okay,” he replied softly, “but can I ask you one thing?”
“Sure,”

“Are you doing this for Liz and Max or are you doing this for yourself?” Kyle asked, sitting up and looking down at her.

She had never thought about it like that. She guessed a small part of her wanted to give Max and Liz the happiness she would never have with Zack.

“Whoa.” Kyle breathed, rubbing his eyes disbelievingly. There across the street inside the building was and older version of Max. He blinked several times to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating.

“He’s not going to go away like that,” Stephanie assured from behind him. The two stood on the other side of the road, binoculars in hand.

“This is too unreal,”

“I know,” Stephanie replied, “But all I’ve said to you is true Kyle. I just don’t know what to do now, I mean Future Max already talked to Liz and has her convinced to get Tess and Max together, I just don’t know…”

Kyle lowered the binoculars, “Well, Buddha tells us to go to the source of our problems and resolve them from there,”

“Future Max,” Stephanie agreed.

“Right, so maybe if you talk to Future Max you might be able to persuade him.”

“I don’t think I can. His world is in danger; this is the only way he can think of that will help,” Stephanie took a deep breath, “there’s so much you don’t know Kyle, so much is going to happen.”

“Like what?”

“I can’t say. I-I wish I could tell you everything but that’s not what I’m here for.”

Kyle nodded. “I think you should give it a shot. You were sent here from the future to do something good for Max and Liz, maybe they can be saved, maybe all our lives can be saved and it’s you who can do it.”

Stephanie smiled happily. It felt good to have someone have faith in her. So much faith, that it’d kill her to see that faith and hope diminish and burn. “Alright, I’ll try, but there’s no guarantee.”
She took the binoculars from him and peered through them. Present Max was kissing Liz.
“How am I supposed to talk to Max alone? I don’t want Liz seeing me,” Stephanie asked.

Kyle took the binoculars from her, “Why don’t you want Liz to know. You’re trying to help both of them it doesn’t matter if they both see you.”

“It’ll just mean more explaining to do and I’m not sure how long I’ll be here for,” She gave Kyle a look and he smiled.

*

“How are the powers coming along? Have you got them under control yet?”

Stephanie grunted, leaning on her right arm, “I’ve been practicing the whole drive here. It seems more controlled but I don’t know, I’m afraid I’ll make something terrible happen.”

“What terrible thing could happen?” Kyle asked, “The worst thing you’ve done so far is break a car’s window,”

Stephanie squinted, remembering the incident. She hadn’t purposely wanted the window to break; she was trying to get the car’s lights to flash. “Right…”

“If it makes you feel any better, I thought it was cool.” Kyle said, shrugging his shoulders.

Stephanie shook her head smiling, “It doesn’t.”

“Well, it was worth a try. Why don’t we go back to my place, get some sleep and think about this tomorrow,” Kyle suggested, it was already getting pretty late. He wasn’t much for curfews but he hadn’t slept well over the past couple of days and it was catching up to him.

“I can’t sleep until I do this,”

*

“Okay, I see Liz going through Max’s window,” Kyle reported. He was holding a jam filled donut in one hand while looking through the binoculars with the other hand. They had made a quick stop at a local convenience store to buy some snacks; they weren’t sure how long this would take. Kyle could see Future Max standing close to the window, waiting for Liz.

“I think it’s time.” Kyle looked over at Stephanie, hoping this would work.
Stephanie nodded and closed her eyes, clearing her mind of all thoughts and concentrating on the image of Future Max, trying to remember every detail of his face. The way his hair moved in the wind, his smile, and how his eyes twinkled every time he looked at Liz. She found herself slowly easing her way into his mind. The process was a little hard on her; she could sense the start of a head ache. She wanted to give him something to make him leave Liz’s side for a moment so she could try and talk to him, then Kyle could talk to Liz while driving her home. Now what to place in his mind?

There were so many possibilities but she needed something that would hit him right in the heart and leave no time to talk to Liz or anyone else. Then the idea hit her like a rock, it wasn’t going to be pretty but it’d work for sure.

Kyle watched as Stephanie broke off her connection with Future Max. Opening her eyes; her eye lashes batting together as she blinked a couple of times, Kyle guessed trying to remove the message she had sent Future Max from her head. Whatever it was it would send Max running. Kyle was pretty sure he himself wouldn’t want such an image in his head, haunting him. He placed his hand on her shoulder, concern in his eyes as she laid her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes in relaxation. What happened next surprised the both of them. Kyle rubbed her back for support, kissing the top of her forehead. Stephanie’s eyes shot open when she felt his warm, moist lips gently touch her skin. She didn’t look at him but quickly sat up straight.

“I think it’s going to work,” she said, watching Future Max holding his forehead with his palms. He was in pain. So far all Stephanie had done was cause pain. Pain to Tess, pain to Future Max and soon pain to Kyle when he finds out she’d been lying to him all along.

“What did you make him see?” Kyle asked, intrigued, ignoring her reaction to his kiss. He had meant it in a comforting matter, not anything else. He wasn’t sure if Stephanie got that or not, he wasn’t sure why she was acting weird all of a sudden.

“Something that’s going to make him go exactly where I want him to,” Stephanie said, watching as Future Max quickly glanced through the window to make sure Liz was okay and then dashed into the night, running, and running. Meaning Stephanie would have to catch up to him and talk to him. Even through all this, even at his age now, Future Max looked at Liz the same way the present Max did, full of love. She couldn’t help but feel a little jealous.

*

“Max?” Liz called out, when she left through Max’s window.

“Weren’t you just in there with Max?” Kyle asked, as he pulled up in front of her. Stephanie was gone doing her part and now it was his turn.

Liz smiled, “Yeah I was just-“

“Need a ride?” Kyle asked, cutting her off.
Liz just nodded and took a seat next to Kyle, her head down. She seemed gloomy; Kyle could sense the negative energy coming from her.

“Rough day?” He asked, trying to strike up a casual conversation. Hopefully she felt like talking.
Liz nodded silently, her mind somewhere else.
“Liz, I know I’ve said this to you before but I’m going to have to say it again and I don’t want any interruptions this time okay?” Kyle asked. “I’ve been thinking about the past, about how I treated you and I’m sorry,”

Liz looked up at him finally, her eyes were wet, but Kyle guessed she had been teary eyed since she got in the car. “Kyle… the past doesn’t matter to me,”

Kyle smiled, “Why?”

Liz was confused, “Because it’s over with, I can’t do anything to change it and I don’t want to relive those events. I’d rather concentrate on my present, and most importantly, my future,” A future without Max, she thought sadly.

“Exactly,” Kyle replied a little too cheerfully, “No one can do anything about their past Liz. They can’t change it, even though there may be things about their past they didn’t like and don’t agree with. They can only think about their present and what matters to them right now, and from there they can build their future. No one dwells in the past Liz,”

“What are you trying to say?” Liz asked.

“I know there’s this big problem between you Tess and Max because of this prophecy but Liz, Max loves you he always has. Ever since he healed you that day in the Crash Down,”

“I know but it’s not that simple…” Liz said.

“Actually it is,” Kyle looked at her from the corner of his eye, “Tess is his past, they once were together, and yes they once were in love. But you’re his present Liz. Max wants to build his future with you not Tess. The past doesn’t matter Liz,”

Tears streamed down her face, “Kyle I don’t want to talk about this,”

“Liz it’s up to us to choose our own destinies. We decide what happens to us not someone else, not some alien, or someone from the future,” At the sound of the last two words Liz looked at him accusingly, Kyle hastily added, “or a troll,” it wasn’t a great comeback but it didn’t matter.
“If we want to be happy we can be but we can’t let anyone stop that, no matter what they say you get me? I mean, take Isabel and Michael, they have the whole destiny thing going on but they aren’t acting on it. You know why? Because Michael loves Maria and he’s choosing her to be his destiny, and things are okay, nothing bad is going to happen to the world Liz.”

If only he knew, Liz thought to herself. She didn’t know where this had come from but she liked this side of Kyle. Cautiously, Liz hugged Kyle.

“I just want you to follow your heart okay?”

“Okay,” she replied.

Chapter Five

Stephanie followed Future Max into the park. His body was slumped on the floor against an old tree. She could feel her insides churn, an uneasy feeling fall on her. She hated doing this, making Max feel confused and hurt but she felt like she was running out of time, and she needed to do something drastic, something to get his attention.

“Who are you?” He huffed, running his hands through his brown hair. His body shaking immensely, the way it did when someone had been crying. Stephanie jumped a little, his voice scaring her. “What did you do to me? Why did I see my sister dieing on the floor, here on the floor” His voice rose with anger as he turned to look at her. Stephanie could see the scars his tears made. She backed away nervously.

“I needed to get you alone so I coul-“ She began to explain but he wouldn’t hear it.

“So you could kill me? What do you want from me?” He asked, practically begging her for an explanation, an explanation that would please him.

Stephanie’s own eyes began to well up with tears, she frowned, “It’s not like that I swear!” She breathed, trying not to cry, desperately trying to keep things together. She very much knew what it felt like to watch someone you loved die right in front of you. “I wanted to warn you, to tell you that you can’t let Liz go through with this plan of yours. It will only cause you and Liz pain, more pain than is needed. Max-“

“What are you talking about? You know nothing about what will happen,” he spat.

“I know much more than you actually. I know that you can’t trust Tess, I know that she’s made a deal with K-“ The next thing she knew, she was on the floor, her hand immediately went to her throbbing head. Future Max had thrown her back, obviously not liking what she was saying. But it was the truth, and one way or the other, she’d tell him everything. Slowly she began to get up, her body sore. Max walked over to her, looking down at her body.

“I’m not going to let you talk about Tess like that. You don’t know anything about what’s going on; you don’t know how hard it is to have to loose someone you love,”

Stephanie’s eyes widened, fearing what action would come from Max next. She hoped it wouldn’t involve her getting hurt. You know how people say the eyes show the soul or something like that, well for that moment Stephanie could read him like a book. She saw the fear and vulnerability he felt, and the deep sadness that took over him. “Actually I do,”

Stephanie could hear a car stop a few feet away, Kyle’s voice yelling through the night sky. She was glad she had someone else to help her explain everything, maybe now Future Max would believe her.
