Post by Chrisken »

Title: Antaran Holiday
Disclaimer: I don't own the film rights to 'Roswell'. Just having fun, no profit no sue!
Couples: Max/Liz Michael/Maria Isabel/Alex
Category: Roswell movie script
Rating: TEEN.
Summary: When an alien ship brings the gang to another world, their ideals are tested against inhuman politics.

Author's note: This is my 'script frenzy' for june 2007. (visit us on the web at http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/ ) Spoilers up to 'Destiny'. Liz didn't leave town the summer after season 1. Sorry Kyle lovers, but I don't think I'm gonna be able to squeeze him in. :(

I'll be updating this in script format at http://home.cogeco.ca/~ckenworthy1/holiday.pdf Might be easier to read that way than on the board.

         1 EXT. DESERT LANDSCAPE - MORNING 1

Establishing shot - an airborne view of New Mexico landscape,
camera moving over it. Wide patches of desert, some scrubby
green and rough rocky hills dotting it.

                                   LIZ (V.O.)
                         July 10th, 2000. Starting a brand
new journal today, so I guess I
might as well do a bit of recap. My
name is Liz Parker, I'm seventeen
years old, and I live in Roswell.
Ask anybody what they know about
Roswell, New Mexico, and if they
                         know anything, they'll probably say
                         something about the supposed UFO
                         landing in 1947.

At this point, a town should become visible in the distance,
not a big place, a mix of factories, houses, stores, and
               other assorted buildings.

                                   LIZ (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Fun fact - Roswell was actually not
the closest town to the crash site,
then or now, but it was probably
the biggest place in the area. Ask
those people if they really believe
in UFOs or Aliens, and they'll
either say no, laugh at you, look
at you like you're crazy, or maybe
come up with some exceedingly vague
hedge about how big the universe
                         is.

               City is growing bigger.

                                   LIZ (V.O.) (CONT'D)
                         Okay, here's the big surprise.
There are still aliens living in
Roswell, New Mexico. and I'm one of
the few people who even suspect
that much. In fact, I was dating an
alien guy... might, in fact, still
be dating him, though it's a pretty
                         complicated situation. You see...

And we're zooming in on a few buildings right at the center
of town, probably too fast to see much of them.
                                                                    2.

                                   MARIA (V.O.)
                             (Breaking in)
                         Come *on* Liz, your shift's
                         starting. As in, right now!

         2 INT LIZ'S BEDROOM - DAY 2

This is a tasteful, but still feminine space - the sort that
you might expect from a very driven college student instead
of a high schooler. The bed is made, and very little if
anything is untidy. There is a large window in the background
that leads onto a ledge big enough for at least four people
               to set up lawn chairs.

Liz Parker, a pretty, slender girl with straight dark brown
hair, is sitting at her desk and writing. She is already
wearing a Crashdown Cafe waitress outfit - a light aqua-blue
smock sort of deal with a moderately short hem. She scribbles
               a few more words.

                                   LIZ : (V.O.)
Oops, gotta go. More later. LP.

And she puts the journal into a desk drawer, LOCKS it,
pockets the key, and picks something else up from the desk.
It's a hair barrette with goofy flexible antennae sticking up
out of the top of it. Liz sets this into her hair, gets up,
adjusts it slightly in a mirror (that we may not be able to
               see,) and exits into foreground.

3 INT CRASHDOWN DINING ROOM 3

A fairly standard diner, at first glance. It would take a
sharp eye to notice some of the tacky alien decorations, or
the UFO-themed specials up on the wall. However, it's hard to
notice that the place isn't full. There are maybe eleven
customers sitting down, including some that are major
characters. LIZ and MARIA stand somewhere convenient to
survey the room. Maria is a girl of about Liz's age, and
standing next to her it is clear just how short Liz is. Maria
is wearing the same sort of uniform, and she has dark blonde
hair that is just starting to grow past chin length.

                                   LIZ
This is all of the business that
                         we've got??

                                   MARIA
It's picked up a little since this
                         morning, actually.
                                                                    3.

                             (Someone waves her over,
                              and she gets a cheque
                              ready and heads over. Liz
                              follows.)
What do you expect? 'Anniversary of
                         the crash' season is over.

                                   LIZ
                         Not yet! Fifty-three years ago
                         today, somebody-or-other held the
                         weather balloon press conference.
And anyway, we normally have more
                         steady business than this through
                         the summer, don't we?

                                   MARIA
                             (Offering the customer her
                              cheque,)
                         But things aren't normal around
                         here, Liz.

Liz opens her mouth, but isn't quite sure what to say. Maria
circles around her, heading behind the counter, to the window
where orders are passed through from the kitchen.

                                   MICHAEL
                         What do you want now??

MICHAEL is the cook. He's a tall and studly guy of around 17,
with a bit of Dylan McKay's attitude. Right now, though, he
looks pretty tired of being covered with grease.

                                   MARIA
The asteroid burger order that I
put in five minutes ago. (Pause)
And a night out - nothing fancy,
                         maybe burgers for ourselves and
                         movie?

                                   MICHAEL
I'll see what I can do about the
                         order.

LIZ turns around at this point, walking back through the
dining room. She checks on a few customers to make sure that
they don't need anything, and then steps up to the far booth.
There are three more teens sitting here - two guys, MAX and
ALEX, and a beautiful girl, ISABEL.

                                   LIZ
Hey, mind if I grab a seat for a
                         moment before any duty actually
                         calls out loud?
                                                                    4.

The three of them trade a look, and then MAX gestures to the
free seat opposite him, which is next to Alex. Liz sits.

                                   LIZ (CONT'D)
                             (in a lower tone)
                         How's it going, Max?

                                   MAX
Ehh... not too bad. Milton's been
keeping me busy at the museum,
which helps. But... well, if this
                         is representative of the tourist
season for the next month or so in
                         general...
                             (He looks over the
                              sparsely occupied room,)
I'm going to have more time to
think about what it was like to
enjoy the hospitality of the White
                         Room...

                                   ISABEL
Come on, please, don't talk about
                         that.
                             (She shudders.)

                                   LIZ
Okay, how about a different topic.
Do either of you have plans for the
                         rest of the day?

Liz's tone is faintly teasing, and both Alex and Isabel look
sightly uncomfortable, but there is some spark between the
two that neither of them can quite deny.

                                   ALEX
Umm, maybe head out to the park and
see if anybody shows up for the
                         Alien Abduction party. Anybody else
                         up for that?

                                   ISABEL
Oh, please - the last thing I need
is some alien guy to show up and
whisk me off to his home planet.

                                   LIZ
                         Yeah, he'd probably hold you
prisoner until you agreed to marry
                         him or something.
                                                                    5.

                                   MAX
Speaking of plans, Liz... I was
hoping that we could do something
tonight. Doesn't have to be a big
deal - walk around and talk or
                         something, grab some snacks?

Now it's Liz who seems clearly uncomfortable.

                                   LIZ
                         I... I'd like to, Max, but I'm
still not sure if that's a good
                         idea. What... what about Tess?

                                   MAX
                             (suddenly very firm.)
Tess isn't a substitute for you. No
matter how badly she might want to
be, no matter what we heard last
fall. She - she wasn't there, for
like all of last year, and she
doesn't seem to understand how much
it matters to me - all the stuff
                         that happened before she dropped
into town. She - she never *could*
identify with all the things I've
shared only to you, Liz. I... I
want to be friends with Tess, I
want to understand her, but I don't
think she could ever be my partner,
my soulmate. And I REFUSE to
                         believe that Reincarnation is
                         Destiny.

                                   LIZ
Well, that's all very nice to hear,
Max, I'll admit that much. But have
you thought about what Tess might
do if she gets pissed off at you?

Max opens his mouth to reply when a CELL PHONE rings. All of
the kids check their pockets, and Max brings his out. He
looks at the display, blinks slightly in reaction, and takes
               the call.

                                   MAX:
                         Yes, hello?

                                   CELL PHONE
Hi, Max. I have something that I
                         think you'll want to see.
                                                                    6.

Max shudders intensely when he first heard the voice, but
               then catches himself.

                                   MAX
                         Uhh... Nasedo? Is that you?

                                   CELL PHONE
Never call me by that name, Max.
                         Someone might hear.

                                   MAX
Should I call you Mister Pierce
                         then? Wouldn't anybody listening
                         find that suspicious too? Besides,
nobody else is anywhere close but
                         my frien--

                                   CELL PHONE
Just don't bother. Max, before I
left for Washington, you said that
there were a few things that I
should try to find out if the
Special Unit still had, and to
                         report back, right?

                                   MAX
Umm, yeah, actually. I forgot about
                         that, but...

                                   CELL PHONE
Reporting back. I've found one of
them - the original vessel from the
crash. It's been reassembled and is
working order. I'll be bringing it
                         to Roswell soon. Bye Max.

                                   MAX
                         Huh?

He looks at the phone, realizes that the line is dead, and
               shuts it off.

                                   LIZ
                         Max, what is it?

                                   MAX
That was... our non-friend who went
to join the FBI. He says that he's
got a ship to show us.

                                   ISABEL
                         A ship?
                                                                    7.

4 EXT. DESERT MIDDLE OF NOWHERE - AFTERNOON 4

There's a highway off in the distance with cars passing by,
and a small stand of trees, against which our heroes stand in
order to avoid being easily spotted. Everyone we met by name
already is here - LIZ, MARIA, MICHAEL, MAX, ISABEL, and ALEX -
and one other girl: TESS. She is short like LIZ, and very
cute, with curly blonde hair and a bouncy figure, but beneath
her pale blue eyes hides a spark of deceptive canniness.

                                   MICHAEL
Why did you ask him about the ship
anyway, Max? I mean... it's not
like you'll ever use it to GO
                         anywhere! You're too wild about
                         staying right here in Roswell.

                                   MAX
I dunno for sure - guess that after
we got that message from... from
the old alien queen, that anything
that might tell us more about our
alien sides or give us more options
                         would be helpful.
                             (sighs.)
I DIDN'T expect him to just drop
everything and bring it straight to
us even if he found it.

                                   LIZ
                             (thoughtful)
But you didn't tell him NOT to,
                         either?

                                   MAX
                         Well... I guess that I didn't at
                         that.

                                   TESS
Why are THEY even here, Max?
                             (points at LIZ, MARIA, and
                              ALEX)
They're not a part of our... of
whatever you might be hoping to
find out about from OUR ship.

                                   MARIA
                             (jumping in quickly)
No, but we've become a part of
                         everything that has happened to...
                                                                    8.

to our friends while they've been
trying to find this stuff out.
We're not going to go away just
because you come to town, Tess
                         Harding, and because they're
starting to find out a few answers

                                   MAX
Yeah, I agree with that. Liz,
Maria, Alex - you've been good
friends and if you want to still
take part in anything that we're
                         doing, then you're welcome to.
Nobody is saying that you HAVE to
still be a part of this - things
                         might get dangerous, especially if
there are alien enemies who know
now a little about who and where we
are. But your invites are still
                         good.

MICHAEL and ISABEL seem uncomfortable, but don't speak up
against MAX - almost as if they want him to be a leader so
badly that they won't undermine him when he's taking that
               role.

                                   ALEX
Well, I guess I'd love to see what
                         an alien spaceship looks like.
Never thought I'd get a chance - at
                         least, not before... well, you
                         know.

                                   TESS
So, that's all anybody's gonna do
with the ship? Look at it??

                                   ISABEL
I think that that's quite enough to
                         start... just blasting off and
heading to some other world without
                         considering the consequences could
be dangerous, Tess. We need to be
                         smart about this.

                                   MAX
Well said. So, does anybody else
                         have any other official business?

                                   MICHAEL
Not really. Been keeping an eye out
                         for any newcomers in town.
                                                                    9.

                         There's a drift-in who just started
                         working at the cafe...

                                   MARIA
                         Who, the blonde waitress? She's
                         annoying but harmless.

                                   LIZ
Which is exactly the reaction that
an alien agent would probably want
to provoke - well, the harmless
                         part anyway.

                                   ISABEL
                         Anything else??

Most of the kids look around at each other silently.

                                   ALEX
                         Nothing official, anyway.

                                   MAX
                             (laughing softly)
Okay, then the official meeting is
                         adjourned!

ISABEL shoots a look at TESS, then MICHAEL, and sidles close
               to ALEX.

                                   ISABEL
I, umm, I'd like to take you up on
your invite to go out to the park
                         together tonight.

                                   ALEX
                             (a little surprised.)
The alien abduction thing? I... I
thought that you didn't want to
have anything to do with it.
                             (unsaid: 'or with me.')

                                   ISABEL
Well, I guess I was a little hasty.
It's not like it's really asking
for trouble to hang out with the
UFO nuts, here in Roswell, and
                         they'll probably be throwing an
                         okay party.

                                   MARIA
                             (dropping another anvil on
                              him.)
                                                                   10.

                         Michael... any interest in checking
                         it out yourself?

MICHAEL gives MARIA a look, rolls his eyes slightly, and
flirts back against his better judgement.

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, but I wouldn't want to crowd
                         Izzie or Alex.

                                   MARIA
Well, you can hang with me then.

                                   MICHAEL
Sure, I guess... just as friends,
                         right?
                             (he winks)

Maria shakes her head at him.

                                   MARIA
                         Spaceboy, my spaceboy... we might
not be a couple, but we'll never be
                         'just friends.'

TESS, watching all of this going on, decides to make her move
               and crosses over to MAX.

                                   TESS
                         How about it, Max?

                                   MAX
                             (playing dumb on purpose)
                         How about WHAT?

LIZ hesitates for a second and then takes action of her own,
slightly conflicted at the prospect of one-upping TESS.

                                   LIZ
Actually... we have plans tonight -
                         sorry.

She stands very close next to MAX, in an implicit invitation
for him to put an arm around her. MAX does. TESS reacts to
their closeness, and LIZ seems a bit uncomfortable with what
she's done. MAX is obviously on cloud nine though.

                                   TESS
Okay, got it. Need to figure out my
own thing for tonight. As usual...
                                                                   11.

TESS heads off to her car, a pale blue SUV, and as she leaves
LIZ can't help feeling a little for the girl who's become an
outcast even among the only other people on the entire world
               who are her own kind.

                                   LIZ
As... as much fun as that
admittedly was Max... we can't keep
alienating her. For one thing... I
can't shake the notion that you'll
need Tess' help the next time some
                         alien danger looms.

                                   MAX
                             (brushing a bit of Liz's
                              hair back from her face
                              and speaking close to her
                              ear)
Tess makes it easy for us to need
her. She's great with her alien
                         powers... creating diversions,
fooling people into seeing what she
                         wants, messing with their heads.
                             (He sighs)
It's not the kind of help that I
                         WANT to need.

                                   LIZ
That doesn't change the fact that
we should both be reaching out an
olive branch. I mean, look... it
can't have been easy for her,
growing up with a hard-assed alien
like Nasedo posing as her father.
Maybe all she needs is a little
                         friendliness to... well, for things
                         to start getting better.

                                   MAX
                         I've TRIED a little friendliness -
more than a little, actually! Tess
is just impossible - if she's not
trying to tear her clothes or mine
off, then it's all about the
                         'aliens are so superior, humans
                         suck' trip.

MAX looks at LIZ. She gives him the serious, no-kidding
               around puppy dog eyes.
                                                                   12.

                                   MAX (CONT'D)
Maybe it should be YOU reaching out
the olive branch. A female bonding
kind of thing. That may be hard, as
long as she sees you as the hussy
who's keeping me away from her,
                         but...

                                   LIZ
Well, the bigger problem is that
she'd probably just laugh in my
face if I tried. On the other hand,
if we can get someone who she
wouldn't look down on to set things
                         up as an intermediary...

LIZ looks over at ISABEL, who is flirting with ALEX and
generally seems to have her usually icy guard let down. MAX
turns to look at her too, and tentatively smiles.

         5 EXT - ROSWELL PARK - EVENING 5

The 'abduct me please' party is in full swing. There are
maybe forty or fifty celebrants about - some drawing weird
symbols on the grass with glow-in-the-dark paint, cooking
food on campfires or barbecues, playing music, drinking soda
or beer out of cans, singing, arguing, or playing weird games
               involving running around.

MICHAEL and MARIA can be seen in the background, talking in a
circle made up of UFO nuts and young townies. MICHAEL seems a
bit upset about whatever a few of the enthusiasts are saying,
while MARIA is laughing and clearly enjoying the discussion.

ISABEL is sitting on a lawn chair by herself, staring up into
nowhere. ALEX walks by, notices her, and pulls up a sturdy
               cooler box to sit on.

                                   ALEX
Something on your mind about those
                         stars??

                                   ISABEL
                             (startled at first)
Huh? Oh, no, not really Alex. It's
things down here that I was mulling
over... Tess, and Liz, and my
                         brother.

                                   ALEX
                         Max?? What about him?
                                                                   13.

                                   ISABEL
Oh, umm... they want me to set up
an ambush for Tess... or at least,
maybe an ambush. Arrange some sort
                         of sleep-over or a girl's night
out, so that Liz and Tess can
settle things and bury the hatchet.

                                   ALEX
Hmm... not sure if Tess is going to
WANT to bury the hatchet if she
figures out that Max and Liz are
                         hatching plots together. I mean...
well, if I were in her position, if
I were upset because you were - if
you wanted to be with somebody
                         else...

                                   ISABEL
                         Yeah, well... I can understand
about Tess holding out on her hopes
for Max I guess... and I've had a
bit of experience on the upsides of
                         stubbornness when it comes to
                         matters of the heart--
                             (She reaches out to hold
                              Alex's hand in hers, and
                              they both smile.)
I mean, if you hadn't pursued me so
hard, then I'd never have even
dreamed that I could feel so mu...
Well, erm. But - but the thing is,
that Tess can be stubborn about Max
as much as she wants, just so long
as it doesn't affect our teamwork
                         stuff. Because working together is
all that really keeps us safe, when
                         it comes down to that.

                                   ALEX
A very good point. So you're going
to set up the meeting then?

ISABEL shakes her head at ALEX, realizing that maybe he
managed to talk her into this thing without her suspecting.

                                   ISABEL
                         Yeah, yeah, I'll do it.
                             (She stands up)
Want to figure out what's going on
                         with those people chasing each
                         other?
                                                                   14.

I think it may be some sort of
Martian tag or a thing like that.

                                   ALEX
                         Yeah, race you over there.

He rushes away, and ISABEL takes a moment to clue in before
               running after him.

         6 EXT - CITY STREETS - NIGHT 6

MAX and LIZ are doing the walk and talk thing.

                                   LIZ
I... I admit that I'm not sure what
to think about things yet, Max.
That... that alien lady whose image
we saw... she said that you and
Tess were MARRIED. And that she was
                         your mother.

                                   MAX
Liz, I think that I only have one
mother... and she's fed you very
bad tacos that came from a box.
                             (Liz smiles at this.)
All of that stuff that we learned
about, way up in the desert rocks
that day... it happened long before
I was born, so how can it really be
                         about me? I... I don't know what
this 'essence' was that they put
into my body after it was created
in a test tube... but at the very
most, that's part of my heritage,
not my identity. I'm not some alien
king, a ruler who lost a war. I'm
Max Evans, a confused kid growing
up in New Mexico... and I'm
                         definitely not married.
                             (He turns Liz's face
                              towards his, so that they
                              can look into each
                              other's eyes.)
                         I would DEFINITELY have remembered
                         that.

                                   LIZ
Oh- okay, I... I think that I can
accept that, at least for the
                         moment.
                                                                   15.

All of those people that the old
                         Queen talked about, they're not
really you guys, they're just your
alien parents, in a weird way.
                             (She thinks about that a
                              bit longer.)
I guess maybe, because of the way
you're not one species or another,
                         the way you were genetically
created or whatever, that you might
all have two parents of the same
gender. No genetic mom for you, I
mean, just an alien father and a
human father, some guy that they
kidnapped to get some human DNA
                         from.

                                   MAX
                             (A little disturbed by
                              thinking about this too
                              much.)
                         Yeah, I guess.
                             (He sighs)
Anyway, I've talked a bit with
                         Michael and Isabel, and they
                         definitely agree with me. The
message we got said that in their
past life, they were a couple too -
Isabel was still my sister and
Michael was betrothed to be married
to her. But they're not going to
                         date or anything. They've been
                         friends, nearly siblings for too
long. Neither of them are quite
sure if they can pick up where they
left off with Maria and Alex, but I
                         hope that they do.

                                   LIZ
Yeah, I guess I do too.
                             (Short silence)
Well, this is me coming up, and I
should probably go and reassure my
Dad that I won't be out all night.

                                   MAX
                         Yeah, okay.

They head through the Crashdown Parking lot and climb up a
ladder to Liz's BALCONY, the one outside her window.
                                                                   16.

                                   MAX (CONT'D)
I... I think I'm bold enough to ask
                         you for a kiss.

                                   LIZ
                             (flirty)
Maybe you don't even need to ask.

                                   MAX
                         Then you asked for this.
                             (Mortified expression)
                         I can't believe I just said that.

While MAX is still feeling foolish, LIZ takes the initiative
and kisses him on the lips. It isn't a perfect fireworks kiss
               - neither of these kids are completely comfortable with each
other again, after being through stuff that most teenage
sweethearts never have to deal with. But both of them are
grinning a bit foolishly when they break, and LIZ climbs
through her window into her bedroom.

MAX is silent as he heads back down the ladder, gets into his
car, a black JEEP that had been parked next to the cafe, and
drives off for home himself. As he pulls into the driveway,
his headlights briefly shine on a familiar figure with curly
               blonde hair.

7 EXT. IN FRONT OF EVANS HOUSE - NIGHT 7

Max turns off the ignition and gets out of the Jeep.

                                   MAX
What are you doing here, Tess?

                                   TESS
I... I just wanted to talk, Max.

                                   MAX
Okay, I guess. Lemme, umm, let me
poke my head inside, and then I'll
figure out where the best place to
                         do this thing is.

                                   TESS
                         Don't want your parents thinking
that you have a new squeeze, Max?
                             (Max shoots her a dirty
                              look.)
Your father knows that I was
waiting out here to see you.
                                                                   17.

                                   MAX
                         Just a minute, Tess.

         8 EXT. EVANS BACKYARD - NIGHT 8

A minute later. Max and Tess are sitting on wooden patio
furniture and they each have a glass of water on the patio
table. It looks a bit more like a political negotiation
session than two friends sitting down for a casual chat.

                                   TESS
                         Okay, I guess I'll start. Why don't
you want to do anything to help
                         your people, Max?

                                   MAX
That's what you wanted to talk to
                         me about?

                                   TESS
Yeah, what - you thought it would
be about the personal destiny thing
again? I... I can read the signals,
Max, even if it takes me a while to
get the hint. You don't want to
think about the two of us as a
couple, and you get upset every
time I even bring the subject up.
I... I haven't given up on you yet,
but I'll give the whole deal a rest
for a little while. Maybe figuring
out how the two of us can be
friends will get me further than
always getting into your face as a
                         sex object, or whatever.

                                   MAX
Well, umm... I have to say that I
didn't expect you to say that, but
                         the sentiment is appreciated. Um,
in the spirit of full disclosure,
                         tonight Liz and I...

                                   TESS
                         I don't need 'full disclosure'
Max... I don't really want to hear
                         about what went on.

                                   MAX
                         Oh, right. I... I guess I should
                         have thought of that. Sorry
                                                                   18.

                                   TESS
                             (Takes a sip of her
                              water.)
It's okay. Now, can we get back to
the question that I *did* ask?

                                   MAX
Yeah, yeah sure, um... okay, first
off... though I don't doubt that
message from the old queen on any
                         point specifically, some of the
things she told us about - about
                         her alien people...

                                   TESS
Is there a reason that you don't
want to admit that they're OUR
people too, Max? Maybe only on one
side - we're half human too. But
humanity hasn't asked for our help -
in fact, they've tried pretty hard
                         to... umm, sorry.

She looks embarassed at what she almost said.

                                   MAX
That... that's okay I guess. Umm...
I guess the only big issue that I
have is the one I was getting at -
that we can't be sure who to trust
when it comes to aliens. That lady
said that we... that we were born
to replace her children and her
                         children-in-law. That there was
some kind of war, and a tyrant took
over, and our people are enslaved.
But... but how can we be sure that
she isn't really one of the people
that took over, or that the
                         revolution wasn't actually a good
thing in the society of that
                         planet?

                                   TESS
Okay, I'll grant that. We don't
                         have too much information on
specifics. But... but don't we have
                         enough cues that there's trouble,
and trouble that we should be
involved in, that we have a DUTY to
figure out where the truth lies and
                         make our stand? If...
                                                                   19.

if that ship is working, shouldn't
we head off to that alien planet,
assuming we can find it, and start
                         asking some tough questions??

MAX takes a long look at Tess, in the spotlight from near the
back door, and sips at his own water before answering.

                                   MAX
That... that's too risky, I think.
If we go to some other planet - how
do we know that we can get back?
Where's the assurance that we won't
get captured by people who think
that we are their enemies right
away? And... and if we find the
people who think that they're our
                         friends... they might still ask
things of us that we're not ready
                         for.

                                   TESS
That the THREE of you aren't ready
to follow through on, you mean.
                             (She stares challengingly
                              at Max, who can't reply)
                         You're just afraid that they'll
want us to take on the roles of our
past life selves... for you to be
the King, and me the Royal Bride.
Isabel as the Princess, and Michael
                         as her Betrothed Consort.

                                   MAX
I... I'm worried about that, yeah.
A King doesn't usually have much
choice about who he marries or what
his own life is like, and I... I
don't want to be a king. There,
                         I've said it.

                                   TESS
                         Sometimes there are bigger things
                         than what YOU want, Max!!
                             (She gets up and
                              accidentally spills her
                              water; it starts dripping
                              through the wooden slats
                              of the table and away.)
Agent Pierce just WANTED to keep
his country and his planet safe -
and right now I think that you're
being as BLIND as he was!!
                                                                   20.

TESS storms away through the gate at the side of the house,
and a few moments later we hear a car engine roaring to life.
Max just sits there, stunned at what she said to him.

         9 INT. MICHAEL'S APARTMENT - NIGHT 9

There is the sound of a key on the other side of the door,
and then it opens. MICHAEL charges unsteadily in, bumping
into a telephone table (or something like that) just slightly
and STUMBLING. MARIA follows him in and does a take as she
sees MICHAEL flip backwards over the side of the couch and
flop onto it. She rushes over to assist him.

                                   MARIA
Did you drink from somebody's beer
                         back at the park?

                                   MICHAEL
No... I'd probably be really in a
bad way if I had any alcohol. You
remember how Max got when he drank
                         on Valentine's day.

                                   MARIA
Max had nearly a mouthful of Kyle
Valenti's best whiskey. If you had
about the same amount of beer, then
                         probably you wouldn't have been
quite as uninhibited as him. Seems
                         to fit.

                                   MICHAEL
Ohh. Well, maybe. I can't remember
having any beer. But... but a cute
                         redhead offered me this Mexican
fruit drink thing - while you were
                         off talking with Alex.

                                   MARIA
Oh, boy. Maybe there's something in
                         that which alien hybrids are
                         susceptible to.
                             (Suddenly realizes
                              something from what
                              Michael said.)
                         Just HOW cute a readhead??
                                                                   21.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Oh...
(He pulls her down to the
                              sofa next to him and
                              bends her head close to
                              his.)
Not NEARLY as cute as my ex
                         girlfriend.

                                   MARIA
                         Oh-ho, so we're still ex?

                                   MICHAEL
I... I think that we were 'ex'
                         earlier today.
                             (He kisses her cheek.)
As far as whether we're ex right
                         now...

MARIA suddenly moves to get up - MICHAEL tries to stop her
for a moment, but allows her to reach her feet. Maria paces
away from the couch and turns back to stare at Michael as he
               struggles to sit up.

                                   MARIA
Michael, you... you just can't do
this to me! I... I want to be back
with you, yeah, but you're not
really yourself at the moment. If
you're not actually drunk, then you
really might just as well be. How -
how can I know that things aren't
going to be worse in the morning if
                         I... if we...

                                   MICHAEL
Hmm... I guess you have a point.
There's only one way to be sure I
                         suppose.

                                   MARIA
                         And what's that?

                                   MICHAEL
Go home now, come back in the
                         morning, and kiss me then.

Okay, the pages are a little different now since I realized I should stop using scene numbers ;)

Here's up to page 35 or so:

Code: Select all

                                   MARIA
Michael, you... you just can't do
this to me! I... I want to be back
with you, yeah, but you're not
                         really yourself at the moment.

                                                                   21.

If you're not actually drunk, then
you really might just as well be.
How - how can I know that things
aren't going to be worse in the
                         morning if I... if we...

                                   MICHAEL
Hmm... I guess you have a point.
There's only one way to be sure I
                         suppose.

                                   MARIA
                         And what's that?

                                   MICHAEL
Go home now, come back in the
                         morning, and kiss me then.

Maria laughs nervously at this, and then gives him a warm
               smile.

                                   MARIA
Sometimes I guess that you're not
as dumb as you look, Michael
Guerin. Ohh... but you know that I
hate waiting for something that I
                         REALLY want!

And with that line, she leaves. Michael kinduv groans and
               tries to stand up.

               INT. EVANS HOUSE - MORNING

MAX opens his door, wearing pajama casuals, and blearily
moves down the hallway a few doors. Tries a knob - it doesn't
               turn.

                                   ISABEL
                             (singsong, from inside)
                         In use at the moment!

                                   MAX
For how long, dear sister mine? I
kinduv need to get in there and use
                         the can!

                                   ISABEL
Well, umm, I JUST started drying my
                         hair...

                                   MAX
You can stop that and pick it up
                         later!

                                                                   22.

Actually, you can unplug the blow
dryer and take it into your room!

                                   ISABEL
Yeah, but in my own room it won't
reach from the socket to the mirror
so that I can see what I'm doing...

                                   MAX
                             (groans)
Izzie, come on! I really need to...

                                   ISABEL
I think you really SHOULD be nicer
to me, considering that I agreed
last night to do you and Liz that
                         big favor...

                                   MAX
                         Okay, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have
                         raised my voice.
                             (leans closer to the door
                              to whisper.)
But if you don't let me in, I'm
                         opening this door another way!!

                                   ISABEL
Sure, fine... though I'm not sure
if you'll want to 'use the can'
with me here. If you can just wait
thirty seconds or so while I try to
get my bangs to come out right,
                         then...

Max passes his hand over the doorknob. With a soft yellow
glow of ALIEN POWERS in use, it turns itself and the door
swings open. We can now see Isabel, frowning at her
reflection in the mirror and holding a very fancy blow dryer.

                                   ISABEL (CONT'D)
Do you think that Alex would like
me with curls? Not really tight
curls, more like... I dunno, soft
                         waves or something??

INT. EVANS HOUSE - HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Now it is ISABEL who is waiting for MAX to give up the
washroom. However, she is much calmer and chattier about the
               necessities of her position.

                                                                   23.

                                   ISABEL
So... you didn't say much about how
the walk went between you and Liz
last night. Does that mean it was a
                         good thing? You usually don't
comment on things with Liz if
                         they're going pretty well. I
noticed that Michael and Maria left
                         the abduction party last night
together. As far as Alex and I...
well, I dunno, I guess that there
wasn't anything too dramatic, but -
well, it was still nice somehow.
                         Maybe you and Liz should...

She is cut off by a TOILET FLUSH. A long moment later, the
door opens, and Isabel bustles in to start adjusting her hair
this time, using her POWERS to preview a few fancy style
               changes.

                                   MAX
We kissed. It was grea... actually,
not quite great, but nearly great.
                         Better than 'good.'

                                   ISABEL
                         I wouldn't pass on a 'nearly great'
kiss right now myself... but not
with you, of course. I mean...

                                   MAX
And when I got back home, Tess was
                         waiting to ambush me.

                                   ISABEL
What?? Did she take her top off or
                         something?

                                   MAX
Huh? No, no, it wasn't like THAT at
least. But she... she compared me
                         to Agent Pierce.

                                   ISABEL
                         What??

                                   MAX
Well, sort of. It was a
conversation about the ship, in a
                         way, and... and what decisions
we'll have to make when it gets
                         here, and...

                                                                   24.

Once again there is an interruption, a telephone ringing. Max
cocks his head, then goes back into his room and picks up the
               CORDLESS phone.

                                   MAX (CONT'D)
                         Hello?

                                   TESS
Umm... Ed's back in town. Just
thought that you'd like to know.

                                   MAX
                             (sighs to himself)
Does he have it? If so, where??

There is a pause while Tess presumably relays the question
               and gets an answer.

                                   TESS
Meet us at the foot of the pod
                         chamber rocks, at quarter to
                         eleven. I'll tell Michael.

                                   MAX
                         Right.
                             (He hangs up and starts
                              dialing again. Isabel
pokes her head out of the
                              bathroom door.)
                         The ship's here already. I'm
calling Liz, probably Maria - do
you want me to tell Alex as well?

                                   ISABEL
No, I'll call him myself. Don't
want the poor boy to get any
                         paranoid notions about me avoiding
                         him.

Max smiles at that and puts the cordless to his ear again.

EXT. NEW MEXICO DESERT - MORNING

Max, Isabel, Liz, and Alex are all in the JEEP, driving at
fairly high speeds over a fairly rough track. Behind them we
               see a mid-90s Volkswagon Jetta.

                                   ALEX
So, Maria was over at Michael's
                         this early in the mornng?

                                                                   25.

                                   MAX
I guess. I didn't reach her on the
cell until they were already on
their way. But she made it pretty
clear that she hadn't been there
through the night, just came back
                         this morning.

                                   ISABEL
If we believe anything that Maria
                         makes THAT clear.

                                   LIZ
I do, I think... though I may have
to give her an opportunity to talk
to me alone later to be sure.
                             (Alex laughs)
Ooh, that's the rocks right up
                         ahead, right??

                                   MAX
                         Yeah.

They pull up at the foot of a distinctive jagged hill in the
middle of the desert. Tess' SUV is parked here, with both
front doors open. Everybody gets out to look around,
including Michael and Maria, who were in the Jetta

                                   ISABEL
What now? Head on up to the
                         chamber?

                                   MICHAEL
                         I don't think so.
                             (He nods at the SUV)
Does that make you think of
anything? Think what it might look
                         like from overhead.

                                   LIZ
Oh, I get it! An arrow sign, well,
sort of. So we're supposed to go in
                         the direction that it's pointing?

                                   MAX
                         Good enough, I guess.

They start to hurry across the desert floor, climbing up and
down some rough slopes. Isabel has an uncertain look on her
               face.

                                                                   26.

                                   ISABEL
Why couldn't they just stay with
the SUV and say 'come on, this
                         way?'

Nobody answers. After a bit more rushing around, they climb
up another ridge, which forms an oval-shaped crater in the
landscape, hiding the interior from observation by anybody
not right on top of it.

EXT - DESERT CRATER - MOMENTS LATER

Inside the crater is a clearly alien SHIP, maybe sixty
seventy feet long and fairly narrow and flat in proportion.
Next to it wait TESS and an older, balding man with an
impatient look on his face. This is ED Harding, one alias of
the shapeshifting alien who raised Tess.

                                   MAX
                             (Leading the way down the
                              crater's inner slope.)
Okay, that looks like one heckuva
                         ship, I have to admit.

                                   ED
Max, hi. Sorry for the short
notice. I think that someone in the
Special Unit might be suspicious of
me - figured that if I couldn't get
the ship out now, I'd lose track of
                         it.

                                   MICHAEL
Should you have come at all? If
                         they're suspicious, then
                         disappearing would just...

                                   ED
--occupy them for a while and keep
them out of other mischief, I
                         think. Don't worry about me,
Michael. It's supposed to go the
                         other way around.

                                   ISABEL
Okay. But... but what about this
ship? We - we can't keep it here
                         for too long without somebody
                         spotting it, and... well, umm...

                                                                   27.

                                   ED
                         I've arranged a safe storage
                         location for it, down near
                         Carlsbad. Actually, it's in the
                         Carlsbad caverns, one that's almost
imossible to get into without hover
                         capacity, and that nobody much
tends to bother with. Also have a
few tricks to keep it from
                         accidental discovery, even if the
                         worst happens.

                                   TESS
But we've got to at least give it a
                         test flight, first, huh??

Max turns to look at Tess suspiciously. However...

                                   MICHAEL, ALEX, MARIA:
Hell yeah! ... Well, sure I guess -
why not? ... I'm up for it if you
are... where should we go? ... How
                         about, no that won't work....
                         (etcetera)

Max, Liz, and Isabel trade wary glances. Max turns to Ed.

                                   MAX
How easy is this thing to pilot?

                                   ED
You'll pick it up in no time,
                         literally.

INT. ALIEN SHIP - MOMENTS LATER

Our seven main characters have taken seats inside the cabin -
Michael and Max in the front, what might be the pilot's and
copilot's chairs, and the others around the edges of the
narrow room. The seats are arranged so as to allow a narrow
space along the center of the cabin down which someone could
walk, and most of them face controls, windows, or both.
Morning sunshine lights up the interior.

Ed's voice comes through an alien speaker near Max. Though
the mechanism for this is not plain, it will serve to
establish that he's remained outside the ship.

                                   ED
                         All set, guys?

                                                                   28.

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, totally! How do I lift off?

                                   ED
There'll be a vertical lever near
your legs. Up to go up, down to go
down - very simple. Just be careful
not to jump or fall too fast.

Michael finds the lever, and clearly he finds the positioning
               a bit awkward

                                   MICHAEL
                             (under his breath.)
What, do aliens have joints in
                         different places from us? Okay,
                         here goes. Gently...

He moves the lever up slightly, and outside the windows the
crater interior falls away. Max begins to utter a cry as the
desert landscape beyond becomes visable, but Michael deftly
drops them back down just slightly.

                                   LIZ
What does it look like from out
there, Ed? How high up are we?

                                   ED
Not much different than it looked
like when it was landed, Liz.
                             (Max bristles at Ed's
                              patronizing tone to Liz.)
You're not too high, maybe eight or
nine feet off the crater floor.

                                   MICHAEL
Okay, I think I've figured out the
                         other main controls. We have
                         spin...
                             (He reaches out and gently
                              twists a dial on the
                              console in front of him,
                              and the ship turns
                              slightly in the same
                              direction)
                         ...and forward/back, which I'm not
going to touch yet because the
crater wall is still in front of
and behind us. The big question now
is - are we actually going to GO
                         somewhere today??

                                                                   29.

There's a tense moment. Everybody is aware of both sides of
the question - the urge to fly and put this ship through its
paces, and the dangers of discovery that go along with such a
               trip.

                                   MAX
Okay, take her out for a spin. But
go FAST. That way we're less likely
                         to be seen clearly.

Michael chuckles and hits the controls in sequence, making
the ship rise and launch forward.

INSERT - THE ALIEN SHIP IN FLIGHT

Come on, we had to have a few shots of this, right? If
possible, we'll get a glimpse of a figure standing in the
crater beneath as the vessel rockets into motion - except no
               trace of rockets.

               RESUME - INSIDE THE SHIP

The kids look outside in wonder.

                                   MARIA
Why... why doesn't it feel like
                         we're moving at all??

                                   LIZ
                         The engines must be inertialess...
                         graviton based or something like
                         that. They don't just move
themselves, they move every part of
the ship and the cabin - including
                         us. Then there's no force
                         differential, which is what we
                         sense as acceleration.

                                   TESS
                         Like, duh.

Liz shoots her a dirty look.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Any suggestions for where to?

                                   ALEX
Tend north by northwest maybe. That
should give us some decent space to
fly in while avoiding cities and
                         highways.

                                                                   30.

                                   ISABEL
Until we need to get past the band
                         of suburbia that stretches between
Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Why not go
East? We don't need to worry about
crossing the state line in THIS
                         thing.

                                   MICHAEL
Actually, you know what would help?

                                   TESS
                         What, Michael?

                                   MICHAEL
If this control panel had a compass
on it. I'm kind of lost.

                                   ISABEL
Oh, come on, Michael. It's summer
morning, so the sun is in the
                         southeast, which means...

               INSERT - MICHAEL'S CONSOLE

In a previously blank spot, a COMPASS WHEEL suddenly appears
with the four cardinal points indicated and a thick black
               arrow pointing NORTH.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Oh, never mind. Crisis averted.

He starts to turn the ship around. Max looks down at the
console, somewhat disturbed by the way it just appeared after
               Michael asked for it.

                                   MICHAEL (CONT'D)
                         Okay, I'm heading northeast unless
somebody else has a better idea.

                                   NEW SPEAKER VOICE
                         Attention, unidentified air
vehicle. You are in violation of
                         United States Air Traffic Control
                         patterns. Please respond with your
                         designation and stand by for
                         landing orders.

Everybody panics for a moment. Max presses blindly near the
speaker, and a little black patch shows up next to it.

                                                                   31.

                                   ISABEL
Does... does that mean that they
                         can't hear us, Max?

                                   MAX
                         I - I hope so.

                                   SPEAKER VOICE
                         Unidentified vehicle, respond now.

                                   MARIA
Okay, so they can't hear us until
we want them to. But what now?

                                   ALEX
I suppose it's too much to hope
that we just happened to tune into
                         a transmission directed at a
                         completely different unknown air
                         vehicle?

                                   MICHAEL
                         I think so, yeah.

                                   LIZ
What bugs me is, why is he asking
for a designation? If he can't
identify us, the chances are high
that we don't have any kind of
official designation - as in fact
                         we don't.

                                   MAX
                         Yeah, but most unidentified vehicle
pilots would just reply with a code
name that they think is cool.

                                   TESS
Come on, just floor it Michael!
Soon enough we'll be out of their
                         radar contact range, whoever they
                         are!

                                   ISABEL
And into somebody else's. You can't
                         lose air traffic control that
                         easily.

                                   MARIA
Why doesn't this thing have a
                         stealth flight mode??

                                                                   32.

                                   ALEX
Maybe it does. But we don't know
                         how to turn it on
                             (beat)
                         Michael, don't just start hitting
controls at random. That way lies
                         MUCH badness.

                                   MICHAEL
I was *not* going to do that!!

                                   LIZ
I hate to suggest this, but maybe
we SHOULD just be looking for a
place to land as soon as possible.
That way, we'll drop off the radar,
and we can figure out how to get
                         home later.

                                   MAX
Or we could head for the Gulf of
Mexico, and figure out what to do
                         next once we're over international
                         waters.

Michael turns the ship around and zooms off at a new angle.

                         Unidentified vessel, by refusing to
                         answer contact and by altering
course, you are requiring that I
                         escalate this situation. Fighter
                         jets are being scrambled to
                         intercept you.

                                   TESS
                         Damn.

Suddenly there is an odd shaking of the ship, which was
previously quite steady even when Michael was maneuvering.

                                   MARIA
                         What was that?

                                   ISABEL
Sound barrier, I'd guess. And we
probably just made one heck of a
sonic boom, down there on the
                         ground. Which apparently now has
                         houses and farms around.

                                                                   33.

                                   MAX
                             (sort of panicking)
                         Umm... give us some altitude,
                         Michael.

Michael works the vertical control, and they shoot up higher
               into the sky.

                                   ALEX
Err... I think that I see the
                         fighter jets, or something
                         approaching, on this display.
                             (he taps the flat surface
                              in front of his seat.)
                         I don't think we're going to be
                         able to outfly them.

                                   MAX
Dammit! There... we need to be able
to get out of here, right now, and
                         be somewhere that they can't
                         possibly follow us to!

Max raises his fist in a dramatic gesture. Unseen by him, a
new BUTTON just materializes out of nowhere, like the compass
did. And Max bangs his fist on the console - right on top of
the button. The ship shakes again.

                                   LIZ
                         What... what's happening now, Max?

                                   MAX
I... I'm not sure. Something just
sort of appeared in front of us.
                         Michael, maybe you should...

He's cut off as the ship PLUNGES into a universe of fancy
swirling colors. There is violent turbulence and Liz sprawls
halfway out of her seat. Max sees this and gets out of his
own to help her, stumbles, and regains his balance.

                                   MICHAEL
We... we just flew into the
                         twilight zone or something.

                                   TESS
                             (awed and wonderstruck)
                         Or... or SOMETHING...

                                   ISABEL
                         It's... it's like the ship
responded to what you said, Max.

                                                                   34.

The way it did with Michael and the
                         compass. We're - were going
                         somewhere else. Somewhere that the
                         fighter jets can't follow us.

There's a moment as this sinks in.

                                   MARIA
Uh-oh. Any idea how far away this
                         somewhere else might be?

Cued in by Isabel's remark, Max examines his console and
               finds the button.

                                   ALEX
I... I think we may be about to
                         find out. Look up there.

Outside the ship, there seems to be something at the end of
the tunnel - not even clear if it's light or darkness, but
it's not the same as the colors all around it.

                                   MICHAEL
I... I'm trying to reduce airspeed
so that we can see better once
                         we're out...

                                   MAX
Should I try doing the same thing
again to find out if that brings us
                         back?

                                   LIZ
The same thing as WHAT, Max? As
saying that we need to get out of
                         here?

                                   MAAX
                         Um, no - there's a button. Didn't
                         realize that it had appeared,
                         but...

                                   TESS
Maybe it's better not to risk it.

                                   ISABEL
Where's the risk? Even if it sends
us somewhere randomly - who's to
                         say that the second random
                         destination would be any worse
                         than...

                                                                   35.

               EXT. ANTARAN SKY - EVENING

The ship emerges out of nowhere into an unearthly landscape -
greenish-blue sky, large orange-yellow sun sinking toward the
horizon. The vegetation below, rough scrub that leaves empty
patches of sand here and there, actually doesn't seem too
               different from New Mexico.

               INT. SHIP - EVENING

The kids react to what they see out of the windows.

                                   ISABEL
Umm... would be any worse than
                         this?

                                   TESS
It doesn't seem TOO bad, does it?
And... and maybe this first jump
was pre-programmed - by the people
who flew this ship to Earth the
                         first time.

                                   MARIA
Wait a second - we're on an alien
planet now? Like - we went through
a wormhole or something? Max - hit
the button again! Get me home.

Max looks over at Liz, who shrugs, and Isabel, who nods very
slightly. He pushes the button again. There's a faint whining
sound and the button flashes red.

                                   MAX
I think that we're fresh out of
                         dilithium crystals or something.
                             (Looks out the front
                              window again.)
Maybe we should find someplace to
                         land, and soon, before somebody
else calls to ask what the heck
                         we're doing up here.

                                   MICHAEL
Somebody will probably find us and
ask what the heck we're doing down
                         THERE, too.

                                   LIZ
Right... we've got to be smart
                         about this...
                                                                   36.

maybe try to find someone friendly?
Though... though I admit I'm not
quite sure how to do that without
                         taking the risk of meeting
                         SOMEBODY.

                                   ISABEL
Umm... weirdly enough, I might be
able to help out with that.

                                   ALEX
                         You can, honey?
                             (Realizes what he just
                              said)
                         Err... I didn't mean to - well,
that just sort of slipped out, and
                         I'm sorry if you...

                                   ISABEL
No, come on, that's okay Alex. In
                         fact, I sortuv liked it.
                             (Gets back to business.)
                         Michael, turn around seventy
degrees to the left, and drop
                         thirty feet or so.

                                   MARIA
What's going on with you? Does it
have anything to do with that weird
                         sculpture thing you've got your
                         hand against??

Everybody notices that Isabel's right hand is resting on an
oddly convoluted structure of metal and glass, roughly
               prismatic in shape.

                                   ISABEL
                         Umm... maybe that's helping, I'm
not going to take my hand away
until it looks like it's worked, or
                         it's clearly not.
                             (She sighs.)
I... I just have a strong sense of
a friendly mind, of somebody who'd
be friendly to us. Fairly close
                         nearby.

                                   MICHAEL
Okay, we've got a few small houses,
                         maybe half a mile away.
                                                                   37.

                                   ISABEL
Dammit, not that close. Keep going,
and I hope that they don't see us
                         and cause trouble later.

               EXT. ANTARAN COUNTRYSIDE - SUNSET

The kids file out of the ship again, which has landed in a
forest clearing. High up on a hill, maybe a quarter mile
away, is a very fancy looking MANSION with turrets and window
bays and whatever else we can use to make it look impressive.

                                   MARIA
And... and the people who live
                         there will be friendly, Isabel?

                                   ISABEL
                             (concentrating)
Not... not people, at least, I
didn't think so. It seemed like
                         just one person was there.

                                   MICHAEL
In a big place like that, just one
                         person??

                                   MAX
                         Umm... well, Isabel's never really
                         steered us wrong before.

                                   LIZ
Yeah - let's go, but be careful.
Those of you with powers - be ready
                         just in case.

                                   TESS
Got it. And off we go.

The kids form a rough two by two file towards the house,
except for Tess, who is all by herself at the third place in
               line.

               EXT. MANSION APPROACH - DUSK

They are now coming up what might be the mansion's 'front
walk' - a long straight path between a mass of shrubbery on
one side and a moatlike pond on the other, leading up to a
               tall brownish-blue door.
                                                                   38.

                                   ALEX
It's so hard to adjust for the time
                         difference. My head still thinks
that it's only 11 am or so, just
like my watch does. Probably that's
what time it is back in Roswell,
unless there was a time distortion
                         effect in the wormhole or
                         whatever...

He breaks off as the door suddenly OPENS. Michael hurries in
front of Maria, and the other hybrids (Max, Isabel, Tess)
also get themselves subtly ready for a fight.

After a beat, a humanoid figure steps forward from the
doorway into the waning twilight - a person who seems at
first glance grandmotherly. Her short curled hair is a
whitish steel gray, her wrinkled skin a delicate icy purple,
and her eyes, when we get to see them in a close-up, are
somewhere between golden and orange, and shaped more like cat
               eyes than human ones.

Though seeming old, she is apparently spry and healthy, and
she looks at the kids about as nervously as they are looking
               at her.

                                   ALIEN WOMAN
                         Babble babble whatchemacallit va de
                         ma ra??

               Max and Isabel exchange glances.

                                   ISABEL
                         Okay, we REALLY should've expected
                         this one!

                                   ALIEN WOMAN
                         Goobledy goobledy gekk?

She moves towards the nearest of them, who happens to be Max,
holding a hand out around head level in a fashion that's not
exactly unfriendly, but somewhat confusing until Liz takes a
               guess.

                                   LIZ
                         Connection powers! If she's the
same kind of alien as your other
half, Max, then she can connect
with a touch contact, just like you
                         can. You could communicate that
way, maybe she could even learn
                         English that way?
                                                                   39.

                                   MAX
                             (looks nervous.)
Okay, but... but I'm going to try
to shield her off from everything
but the language centers and some
very basic information about how I
grew up on Earth, and you guys
                         being my friends. Nothing about
royalty, or the Special Unit or the
                         crash. Sound good?

                                   MICHAEL
                         Alright with me.

Max nods slightly as the old woman, and she smiles and
reaches out to touch him - not actually hand to head, mind
meld style, but hand to hand. They both exclaim softly, and
the connection is over in a few seconds.

                                   ALIEN WOMAN
                             (speaking in an odd
                              accent, because she just
                              learned the words)
Who... who are you? What world is
this that you have come from - and
                         how?

                                   ISABEL
That... that will take a lot of
                         explaining I think.

                                   ALIEN WOMAN
Yes, I - I suppose that it would.
Umm... won't you all come in?

Michael shoots a suspicious look at Max. Max shrugs.

                                   TESS
I think that we'd love to.

               INT. SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

A somewhat odd-looking space in the mansion. There are many
chairs of somewhat unusual design, but they were created to
be comfortable to humanoids and thus not really too exotic.
An odd energy pattern bounces against the walls of a cube
next to a wall - think alien fireplace. A number of crests
and decorations are visible about the room, as well as
deserted landscapes, portraits of humanoids with odd hair and
skin colors, and other representational art.
                                                                   40.

The kids and the alien woman are sitting around, looking
               uncomfortable.

                                   ALIEN WOMAN
Well, let's see. My name is
                         Chajicka, and... is there anything
I can offer you by way of
                         refreshment before the telling of
                         stories begins?

                                   MAX
Hi Chajicka, I'm Max Evans. As far
as food or drink... maybe we'd
better sort that out later. It
                         might take a while.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Surely. Go ahead.

                                   MAX
Umm... I'm not sure to begin. We...
we come from a planet that the
                         natives call Earth...
                             (Chajicka makes an oddly
                              strangled sound.)
                         Is something wrong??

                                   CHAJICKA
No, that was... well, I just
thought it was a bit funny. Maybe
we have different ways of reacting
                         to humor.
(Max nods in his turn, and
                              Isabel shares a look with
                              Alex.)
A lot of planets, not all of them,
have developed a similar word for
their planet before they go out
                         into space. Something related to
rock or growing soil or dust...
because that's what they were most
                         familiar with about their planet
before they even realized that it
WAS a planet. It gets a little
                         confusing when two different
                         species like that make first
                         contact.

                                   ISABEL
I can imagine. Umm... but I'm not
sure we have any better names for
our homeland. The star it orbits
                         was named Sol...
                                                                   41.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         ...Which just means 'the sun',
right? It's okay... I'll try to
                         contain my fribblezin over 'Earth'
                         for the time being.

                                   MAX
                         Okay. So... well, Max, Isabel,
                         Michael, and I... we aren't
                         purebreed humans. We think that
we're hybrids, half of our heritage
                         coming from... from this world,
maybe. What should we call this
                         planet, anyway??

                                   CHAJICKA
Hmm... right. Let's try the name
'An-tar' on for size. Sound good?

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, that can work I think. Antar
as a place, Antarian for people?

                                   CHAJICKA
Yes. And now we should try to stop
                         these interruptions and really make
                         inroads on the story.

                                   MAX
                         Well, okay. Let's see... Michael,
Isabel, and I knew each other
growing up, and knew that we were
different, but that was about it.
There were - were stories, in the
place we lived, about an alien ship
crashing down out of the sky one
night, so we guessed that we might
be from another planet. We didn't
start to find out more until after
I'd saved Liz's life, and through
her, and a local sheriff who wanted
to catch aliens, we found out about
a 'stranger' who'd been around for
                         a long time...

INT. SITTING ROOM - MUCH LATER

Max is just starting to wind up the story. He is holding
Liz's hand, and the other couples (Michael/Maria,
Isabel/Alex) look pretty close. Tess has a much too familiar
               scowl on her face.
                                                                   42.

                                   MAX
And... and when we activated the
orbs, we... we saw the image of a
lovely woman, and she said that...
that Isabel and I were her
                         children, and Michael and Tess
our... our mates. That we had lived
other lives, and been royalty on
our home planet, been killed in
                         some sort of political uprising.
That... that we'd been reborn as
hybrids in order to keep the old
                         royal line alive.
                             (He shoots a shrewd look
                              at Chajicka.)
I'd like to hear what you think
                         about that.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         I... I'd guessed that part a while
ago, as you might have suspected
                         yourself, Max. Because... well, I
was a close personal friend of that
lady, that queen who sent the
message. Who arranged to have all
four of you - umm, sent to Earth.
                         Your mother, Max, Isabel...

                                   ISABEL
                             (Suddenly blurting it
                              out.)
                         Not MY mother!

There's a somewhat uncomfortable silence, with even Max
surprised at the vehemence of Isabel's reaction.

                                   ISABEL (CONT'D)
                         I... I'm sorry, I mean no
                         disrespect to your friend. But...
but I've been thinking about this a
lot, and... and I don't believe in
                         reincarnation, not like that. I'm
not this princess who ever lived
here, on this planet, before. I'm a
                         half-human girl, and I have a
mother and a father who I love very
                         much. I... I know that they're
                         adoptive parents, that they don't
have any genetic link to me, but...
but still I can't accept that I and
that princess, whoever she is, are
                         the same person. Connected, yes.
One and the same - nope, no deal.
                                                                   43.

                                   MAX
I... I've been thinking about that
                         too.
                             (He looks over at Liz.)
Call that woman our grandmother, in
a sort of weird way? The princess
was your birth mother, in a strange
way, because her DNA helped produce
                         you?

                                   ISABEL
                         Yes... I think that's better.

                                   CHAJICKA
Which... which makes me a sort of
                         godmother or substitute
                         grandmother? Well, I suppose.
                             (She levels a gaze at
                              Max.)
Whether you are King Zanar reborn,
or merely his only son though,
                         Max...

                                   MAX
It - it still makes me the heir to
the throne - as far as supporters
                         of his family are concerned.
                             (Leans forward)
                         What IS the political situation
right now? Has... has whoever took
                         control established himself as a
new king? Are the people enslaved
or suffering? Are supporters of the
                         old royal house still fighting
back? Has there been any kind of
                         compromise struck?

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Those... those are all complicated
                         questions, Max...

                                   MARIA
                         And I'm kind of hungry!
                             (Michael and Isabel glare
                              at her.)
Sorry... just - I knew that the
                         complicated politics stuff could
take a long time, and I sort of
wanted to get that out into the
                         open right away.
                                                                   44.

                                   TESS
Actually, I could eat too. It's
been an eventful... few hours, and
I was so excited about the ship
that I didn't have much breakfast.

Liz and Alex make agreeing noises, and Max shrugs at Michael
               and Isabel.

                                   CHAJICKA
We need to talk about that part too
                         - about how you got here so
                         suddenly.

                                   LIZ
YES - and if it'll be possible for
us to get back nearly as easily.
                         But food is good first.

                                   CHAJICKA
Then let us adjourn to the cookery.

               INT. COOKERY - NIGHT

The kitchen equivalent in the mansion - not a homey kitchen
dining room combination, but a large room devoted primarily
to the preparation of food, though there's a small table you
could eat off of nestled in the corner. Some of the equipment
should look slightly familiar, and some of it less.

                                   MAX
                         I... I think I'd probably be the
best one at using my powers to tell
                         if something's harmful to humans,
or to hybrids. The 'life force'
                         connection, you know.
                             (He sighs.)
As far as what's likely to be
tasty, we may well be stuck with a
whole lot of taste testing to work
                         that much out.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         I... I'm afraid I'm at a loss for
                         where to start suggesting, too.

                                   ALEX
                         Okay, umm... just guessing by
shapes and looks, then... how about
                         that?
                                                                   45.

He points out something shaped like a triangular prism, that
is undeniably breadlike in color, with a light brown crust
and a white interior visible on one end. Chajicka smiles.

                                   CHAJICKA
Yes, I... I should have thought of
that myself. That's a slab of
                         'darva' - it's a kind of plain
                         pastry, very simple food, but...

                                   LIZ
                         Bread, more or less! Cool.
                             (She takes the darva and
                              fairly easily manages to
                              slip off a plastic-like
                              covering.)
Do... do you have a sharp knife to
cut off slices, or how are pieces
                         usually obtained?

Chajicka points to something behind Liz and hanging over her
head, that kind of looks like a small hacksaw. Liz smiles,
takes it down, and manages to separate a slice. She passes it
over to Max to do his thing on. Max takes the slice and
stares hard at it, using his powers.

                                   CHAJICKA
                             (Meanwhile...)
Liz, you seem to be fairly at home
                         with food products.

                                   LIZ
                         Yeah, well, at home, I'm... I'm a
                         waitress, somebody who serves food
to paying customers, and I've been
cooking for a long time, though
never - umm, not professionally, I
guess. Maria waits on tables too,
and Michael's a short order cook.

                                   CHAJICKA
                             (lost the thread.)
Maria... she waits for the tables
                         to do what??

                                   MARIA
                         Umm... maybe we'd better try
                         explaining that again later. Max?

                                   MAX
                             (shakes himself back to
                              attention.)
                         I... I *think* that it's okay.
                                                                   46.

                         There's - there's something in the
                         starch equivalent molecules that's
not quite like earth starch, but I
                         can't quite narrow down...
                             (he peers at the slice
                              again.)
Liz, I think that one out of every
three or four sugars in the starch
                         chain is fructose instead of
glucose. Would that cause a problem
                         in human digestive systems?

                                   LIZ
                             (blinks in surprise.)
Umm... as long as the sugars still
chain up the same way, I think so.
I know that dietary fiber, which we
                         can't digest although it's still
good for our guts, is like starch
                         except every other glucose is
                         backwards.

                                   MAX
                         Well... I guess it's worth a try.
                         Smells pretty good, too. Anybody
                         else want this one?

                                   MICHAEL
Nah, you've been touching it the
                         longest, Maxwell. It's yours.

Max bites into the slice of darva, tears off a piece, and
               chews it.

                                   MAX
The crust is soft, like regular
                         storebought bread, not homestyle.
Liz, was it hard to cut without
                         squishing the loaf?

                                   ISABEL
Don't talk with your mouth full,
                         Max.

Max chews carefully with his mouth closed. Liz starts sawing
               off more slices.

                                   TESS
                         Are... are you getting tired
Chajicka? It... it's late here, to
judge by where the sun was when we
arrived. It... It was morning when
we left Earth, so I don't think any
of us are really tired yet.
                                                                   47.

                                   CHAJICKA
I... I stay up half the night
anyway, and it might be unfair to
leave you kids to wander the place
                         alone before you've finished
settling in. Umm... maybe we should
get to the part about how you left,
                         how you got here?

                                   ISABEL
                             (Hasn't taken a slice
                              yet.)
Well, it's fairly simple. One of
the alien protectors who came with
us to Earth... the last surviving
one maybe, he was able to find out
who took the ship after it
crashlanded and give it back to us.
We... we only expected to fly
around for a bit, but Max - well,
he sort of hit a button by
                         accident.

                                   MAX
                             (Finished chewing his
                              first bite by now.)
                         That's something that I don't quite
understand. Wouldn't we need to get
                         out into open space before...
before getting here? We weren't up
                         nearly that high.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         What makes you think that??
                             (Max shrugs uncertainly.)
No, Max my... my dear - true outer
                         space, relatively hard vacuum -
                         that's an immensely forbidding
                         environment, and by refining
                         hyperspace principles the Antarian
people have managed to figure out
                         how to transit between worlds
                         without exposing ourselves to it.
All that a ship like that needs is
to get far enough away from a
                         planet's surface or other solid
matter - a few miles up perhaps,
                         and the wormhole connection to
                         other places can be formed.
                                                                   48.

                                   MAX
So... so that's how the ship that
originally came to Earth would have
                         worked? It didn't approach Earth
from orbit, it just sort of
                         appeared over the New Mexico
                         desert?

                                   LIZ
And - and maybe there was a slight
                         accident upon re-entering normal
space - damage to the flight lift
system, hitting a big bird when it
came out of the wormhole or
something like that. So that it
couldn't stay up in the air and...
                         and crash landed.

                                   MARIA
                         Okay, good enough.
(She nibbles at a bit more
                              of her bread.)
                         So... what now?

                                   ALEX
                             (Teasing her gently.)
In terms of more food, more
                         conversation, or something else
                         entirely??

                                   MARIA
I'm not sure, I admit... just
                         feeling sort of awkward here.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Ohh... where's the ship, anyway?

                                   ISABEL
Didn't you see us land it?

                                   CHAJICKA
I... nope. Happened to look out of
one of the upstairs window and saw
you lot walking up the way...
                             (Clues in to something.)
Is it landed in the forest down
                         that way?

                                   MICHAEL
Umm... yeah. Will it be safe there?
                                                                   49.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Probably overnight. In the morning
you can take it somewhere a little
bit less likely to be found, in the
                         'back yard.'

                                   MAX
Alright. In the meantime - maybe we
should be 'settling in' and taking
a look around the place, even if
we're not tired. Are there enough
                         rooms for all of us?

               Chajicka nods, smiling

                                   LIZ
I hope that alien beds are comfy
                         for humans and hybrids

                                   CHAJICKA
I... I think that mine should be.
                         Many Antarians prefer a supportive
                         framework that generally fits only
their back structure and not that
of other species. I just go in for
                         soft mattresses, though, which most
species tend to find good enough.
                             (Pauses, looking at the
                              group.)
Will some of you be co-habitating??

This one is a big shock. Lots of hemming and hawing from all
of the kids, except for Tess who just sort of smiles to
               herself a bit bitterly.

                                   MAX
Uhh, well... no, the temptation is
there, but I think that none of us
are, alas, really at the point
where they're ready to share a room
                         with a partner.
                             (He grins forlornly at
                              Liz, who nods agreement.)
If... if there are rooms with two
                         seperate mattresses, though, we can
double up with a friend of the same
                         gender.

Isabel shoots Max a quick look

                                   ISABEL
                         I'll pair up with Maria.
                                                                   50.

Liz reacts to this and looks around, realizing that if Isabel
is with Maria, she's being pushed into rooming with Tess.

                                   MAX
How about it, Michael - you and me?

                                   ALEX
So I'm the only one left out on his
                         own?

                                   CHAJICKA
Actually... I think that I have one
room with three beds in it.

                                   MICHAEL
                             (Looks from Max to Alex)
Yeah, I guess that could work.

                                   LIZ
Oh, one thing that we didn't quite
get to yet, Chajicka - getting
                         home?

                                   MAX
Yeah - I pushed the same button,
but it didn't do much, and I'm not
sure why. Is there a special fuel
                         required for a hyperspace jump,
                         or...

                                   CHAJICKA
Well, first off, I imagine that
since you'd already reached the pre
                         programmed return co-ordinates,
there was nowhere for the ship to
go. We'd have to work out transit
equations for Earth for you to go
                         back there.

                                   ALEX
Maybe those are still in the
                         computer from the original jump
                         out.

                                   CHAJICKA
Perhaps. As far as the energy
requirements of the ship, I suspect
that if it was responding properly
in flight, there isn't a huge
                         problem there.
                                                                   51.

                                   MARIA
Okay. Let's go see the bedrooms for
now. I hope my mom isn't worrying
                         too much.

                                   ALEX
One thing first - this darva stuff
is nice, and I'll take another
slice - but what about something to
                         drink?

                                   ISABEL
Do you have pure water here?

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Reasonably pure - there are
dispensers all over the house. I'll
                         show you on the way.

INT, ISABEL AND MARIA'S ROOM - NIGHT

Like the sitting room, this chamber is furnished oddly but
comfortably. The two mattresses, each a bit larger than a
twin bed, are in opposite corners, one against an interior
wall, and the other beneath two small windows. Maria is
kneeling on her bed and looking through one of the windows.

                                   MARIA
That blueish moon - I remember
seeing it when we were downstairs.
It was probably in pretty much the
                         same place.

                                   ISABEL
Hmm... well, that wasn't too long
                         ago.

                                   MARIA
Long enough - we had jut come
inside, and we were talking a long
                         time, especially with Max telling
Cha all about you guys. Back then,
the moon was nearly full. Now it's
starting to shade back towards a
                         half.

                                   ISABEL
                         Hmm, really?
                             (She gets up to look
                              through the window
                              herself.)
                         Well...
                                                                   52.

maybe if it's closer to Antar than
our moon is to Earth, then it's
sort of keeping up with the way the
planet spins. That would tend to
keep it around the same area of the
sky - maybe for days at a time.
                             (she considers)
                         I don't suppose it's possible that
it's locked in the same place all
the time. But anyway, that would
explain why it would show different
                         phases through the night.

                                   MARIA
                             (Turns away from the
                              window, bored now.)
So... how do you feel about being
here, really? I... I realize that
it was an enormous shock for all of
                         us...

                                   ISABEL
                             (Sits down again.)
Yeah, it was... but I dunno.
                         Chajicka's nice, and I'm glad I
'found' her. I... I do want to get
back home soon, and see my parents
so that they don't worry about us
having run away... but in a weird
way, this is a great chance to find
out about the other side of my
                         background. Without leaving Alex or
any of the rest of you guys behind,
because you're right here with us.
                             (A moment's pause)
                         How about you??

                                   MARIA
                         I... I'm not sure yet, I admit.
Just sort of trying to keep from
                         freaking out totally... and hoping
that things look a lot easier to
                         handle in the morning.

                                   ISABEL
Well... maybe we should try to get
some sleep, then. I know that it's
early - but isn't this the best way
of adjusting to a time difference?

                                   MARIA
Not sure, but I'll give it a try. I
wonder if the day here is a
                         different length than 24 hours
                                                                   53.

                                   ISABEL
Sheesh, I didn't even think of that
one. There's so much to worry
                         about.
                             (A beat.)
Do you want me to try connecting
with you and using my powers to put
you to sleep? I'll be careful about
                         it.

                                   MARIA
                         Alright, sure I guess.

Isabel waits for Maria to assume a comfortable pose, touches
her, and Maria immediately slumps into a resting pose, her
eyes closing. Isabel lies down on her own bed and looks out
               towards the windows.

               INT. COOKERY - MORNING

Michael comes through a small hallway and blinks a little,
shaking his head, as he takes in the room. It looks rather
different in the morning, with diffuse sunlight entering from
a few windows. Alex, Maria, Liz, Tess, and Max are all here
already, exploring among the various supplies and Maria is
experimenting with an open-flame cooker like a bunsen burner.

                                   MICHAEL
Hey, what's up? Where's the good
lady of the house... and Izzie?

                                   MARIA
                         Isabel's sleeping - I think that
she only managed to get to sleep
                         around dawn.

                                   TESS
                         And Chajicka's upstairs... awake,
                         but I don't think that she's
usually up to having breakfast this
early. She said she doesn't mind if
we try to feed ourselves, as long
                         as we're clean and careful.

                                   MICHAEL
Hmm... maybe we could bring her up
some food... if we had any clue
                         what she liked particularly well,
                         that is.
                                                                   54.

                                   ALEX
Yeah, not to worry at the moment.
How did you sleep, and what sort of
thing would you like to eat?

                                   MICHAEL
                         I didn't sleep, really... and I
wouldn't say no to anything that
tastes vaguely like bacon and eggs.
But what about the ship, Max?

                                   MAX
Yeah, I was just going to go and
fly it around once I'd finished
                         this.
                             (He raises a metal bowl
                              that he's eating out of
                              with a huge spoon.)
Don't worry about it yourself -
I'll probably be back inside by the
                         time you're done eating.

                                   MARIA
Let's see... bacon and eggs, I
                         don't think we've found anything
too much like that so far, have we
                         guys??

                                   TESS
There was the salted meat - but
maybe that's more like beef jerky
                         than bacon.

                                   MICHAEL
                         I'll give it a try.

Liz tosses him a flat square of something, sandwich sized and
maybe a quarter of an inch thick. Michael bites into it and
               smiles.

                                   MICHAEL (CONT'D)
Maybe some more of the bread stuff,
                         too?

                                   LIZ
                             (pointing.)
It's right over there. Saw for
                         yerself.

                                   MICHAEL
Okay. What's that you've got in the
                         bowl, Max? Something oat-mealey?
                                                                   55.

                                   MAX
No, actually, umm... I'm not quite
sure how to describe it. Sort of
like pizza that's been through a
                         blender.

                                   MICHAEL
                             (Stops in the middle of
                              cutting his bread.)
                         Seriously??
                             (Max nods.)
                         What sort of pizza? Pepperoni?

                                   MAX
                             (smiling.)
                         Like Cici's barbecue.

                                   MICHAEL
Oh come ON - why didn't you tell me
about that first thing! I want a
                         bowl of it now!

                                   TESS
                             (teasing)
Finish your jerky and that triangle
                         of bread first.

                                   MAX
                         Okay, that's it.
                             (He puts his bowl and
                              spoon aside.)
                         Tess, Ed didn't mention anything
about a way to lock the ship, did
                         he?

                                   TESS
No, but there might be a way to
seal the door to our handprints,
like the way the pod chamber door
                         works.

                                   LIZ
I'll come along for the ride, Max.
That is - if you wouldn't mind some
                         company?

Max grins at her, and makes an 'after you' gesture. He and
               Liz exit.

Okay, another update, and if anybody finds that reading the script here on the board is too frustrating, I'll be maintaining an up-to-date PDF copy here: http://home.cogeco.ca/~ckenworthy1/holiday.pdf

Code: Select all

                                   LIZ
I'll come along for the ride, Max.
That is - if you wouldn't mind some
                         company?

Max grins at her, and makes an 'after you' gesture. He and
Liz exit. Michael quickly starts chowing on his meat and
'darva', and then takes a break to talk.

                                   MICHAEL
So... what's up for today?? Any
                         ideas??
                                                                   56.

                                   MARIA
Let's see... chatting more with the
good lady of the house, once she's
up for it. Exploring the nearby
area, being careful not to meet
                         anyone else, or just wandering
                         around the house. Starting to
figure out what we'll need to get
                         to program the hyperspace jump
                         drive for a trip home.

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, I guess that's enough to get
                         started on.

                                   TESS
I admit, I have so many other
                         questions for Chajicka. Ever since
                         I was little, I've - I've wanted to
hear about alien history and what
our people were really like - that
was before I realized I had a human
side too I guess. But Ed would
never even talk about what he knew.

                                   ALEX
I... I think I may hang around and
either listen to whatever you guys
talk about or explore - until
                         Isabel's up, at least.

                                   MARIA
                             (kidding him gently)
Big surprise. And what about you,
                         Spaceboy - once you've finished
                         stuffing your face?

Michael is in the middle of rapidly chewing a huge bite of
bread, and everybody waits until he managed to swallow -
which he does with a bit of difficulty, as if he just might
               have started choking, but didn't.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Umm... let's see. I don't know if I
can help much with the hyperspace
stuff, and anyway - well, it's not
                         like there's really anybody much
waiting for me back on Earth.
Everyone I care about is over here,
                         really.
                             (He looks out the window.)
                                                                   57.

Wouldn't say no to a bit of a hike
I guess - see what the scenery
looks like in a bit more detail.
Maybe pack a picnic basket full of
                         new taste treats or something.
                         Whatd'ya say?

Maria looks at him and her heart melts a little.

                                   MARIA
I say you had me at the scenery.

Michael finishes the last of his bread and meat with a
               flourish.

                                   MICHAEL
Cool! And now - where's this pizza
                         in a bowl stuff??

INT. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - LATE MORNING

A fairly narrow and twisting corridor in Chajicka's house.
Isabel enters from a door at one end - she is wearing a robe
of odd design, not pulled closed too tightly, and shows a
glimpse of her bra underneath it.

She looks around, proceeds down the hallway, and just then
Alex makes an appearance down a fireman-pole-like device at
the other end of the hall, cheering to himself softly with
delight during the ride. As he lands, he catches sight of
               Isabel, and does a take.

                                   ALEX
Umm... hi there. Guess you're -
                         well, obviously you're up.

                                   ISABEL
                         Eee...
                             (Suddenly gathers her wits
                              enough to cover up
                              slightly.)
I... I had just finished washing
up. Didn't bring my clothes with me
for some reason, and... and I
thought that I'd hear if anybody
                         was approaching. Didn't - didn't
exactly figure on the sliding pole.

                                   ALEX
                             (Grinning big.)
Are you that sorry that I was able
to, umm... to see what I saw?
                                                                   58.

It - well, it isn't exactly like I
                         haven't seen your cleavage before.
Heck, you wore a few outfits to
SCHOOL that showed off about as
                         much as that!

                                   ISABEL
                             (Starting to blush.)
                         Yeah, but... umm. Well, it's
different when it's just you and
me... but not entirely different in
                         a bad way, I guess.
                             (She moves close and puts
                              a hand on his arm.)
                         Just - just a little unexpected I
guess. You know how I tend to be
                         when the situation isn't perfectly
                         under control.

                                   ALEX
Yeah, I... I guess I do at that.
                         Okay, one question.
                             (Isabel nods.)
Why did you leave your hair wet? I
mean... you could have used your
powers and dried it off instantly,
                         right?

                                   ISABEL
                             (She smiles.)
Yeah, but sometimes it feels kinduv
nice to have wet hair after washing
up. What do you think of that stuff
in the bathroom, anyway? All those
                         adjustable flowing fountains, the
                         puffy sponges, the soap powder...

                                   ALEX
Actually... I was a little scared
off by the strangeness of it. I...
I've washed my hands a couple times
since getting here, and cleaned up
a little bit more than that in the
morning, but... but not as much as
                         you did, I think.

                                   ISABEL
                             (Impish humor.)
Well... we could always go in
together, and I could help wash you
off and stuff. Scrub your back -
and any other hard to reach
                         places!!
                                                                   59.

                                   ALEX
                         Umm... really?
                             (Isabel nods fairly
                              sincerely, a hot gleam in
                              her eye.)
Well... umm - maybe later, after my
heart has gotten used to the idea
so it doesn't stop still. And...
                         and you're probably hungry, yeah?

                                   ISABEL
Okay, okay bass man - yeah, I
raided the kitchen in the middle of
the night, but I could eat some
more. Am I the last one up? It
didn't look like anyone was in the
                         rooms where we'd bunked down.

                                   ALEX
Yeah, everyone's awake now I think,
                         unless... well, Michael and-or
Maria might be grabbing a nap
wherever they chose to picnic, or
something like that. I think that
Max, Liz, Tess, and Chajicka are
                         all chatting about basic Antarian
                         facts and so-on.

                                   ISABEL
                         Hmmm...

They find a stairway and start climbing down.

                                   ALEX
                             (Gently probing.)
Do you think you might want to sit
                         in on that?

                                   ISABEL
Umm... no, I *do* want to learn a
little, I guess, but Michael and I
can do our session later - or Max
and Liz can tell me the essentials
of what I need to know sometime.
Right now, I'm up for some sort of
brunch, yeah, and then either wet
and soapy fun or exploring the
mansion with you. That was, umm,
that was pretty much what you were
up to when you bumped into me,
                         right??
                                                                   60.

                                   ALEX
                         Yeah, something like that. Poking
                         around and having some fun.
                             (Suddenly thinks of
                              something.)
You don't want to go back to your
                         room and change? I mean, I don't
mind hanging around you when you're
just in your robe - would you feel
weird if Max sees you like that,
                         or...

                                   ISABEL
                         Hmm... yeah, let's see. I don't
really want to head back upstairs
just to put on the same stuff that
I was wearing yesterday - did my
best to clean it, but still. So,
                         umm... ooh, there should do.

She takes a few more stairs down, Alex following mystified,
until they arrive at a window looking out on a grassy field,
maybe nine steps above the first floor landing. Isabel
squints into the glass, looking for her reflection instead of
the outside scenery, and concentrates. The robe MORPHS into a
               semi-dressy one-piece shift outfit.

                                   ISABEL (CONT'D)
                         Yeah, that should work, huh?

                                   ALEX
                         You look amazingly pretty.
                             (He comes close and kisses
                              her quickly.)
Though, umm, though your face is
                         still sortof a bit wet.

                                   ISABEL
                             (She smiles.)
Yeah - drying myself off with a big
puffy sponge is still a bit weird.
Haven't gotten the trick of it yet.

                                   ALEX
Well - it's not like I MIND or
anything! So, any idea what you
                         want for breakfast?
                                                                   61.

                                   ISABEL
Um... no, not really. Looks like
there isn't much in there that our
                         digestive system can't actually
handle, so I really want to explore
                         something new this time...

               EXT. SCENIC OVERLOOK - AFTERNOON

Michael and Maria are kissing on a blanket, with a picnic
basket nearby. After a moment they break apart, arrange arms
around each other, and sit together enjoying the moment.

                                   MICHAEL
Want anything else from the basket?

                                   MARIA
No. Well, umm, maybe. Are you
                         having anything?

                                   MICHAEL
Err... yeah, I just can't get
                         enough of these burritelada things.

He extracts a thick semicircular pastry and bites into it,
licking delicately at the filling that leaks out.

                                   MARIA
Okay, yeah, I'll have some of the
carrot chips I guess, and the
                         cherry wine as well.
                             (Michael hands them both
                              over, and Maria peers at
                              the bottle after drinking
                              from it.)
You're sure that this doesn't have
                         any alcohol in it?

                                   MICHAEL
                         Very sure... no alcohol molecules
of any sort, and no chemicals that
might be dangerous to humans either
like benzenes or what have you. If
you say it tastes a lot like wine -
of course I believe you, but it's
                         really not.

                                   MARIA
Okay. I wonder if I'll start to get
                         uninhibited just from the
                         psychological effect.
                                                                   62.

                                   MICHAEL
Oh, wasn't that why you were
                         kissing me?

Maria shakes her head, and kisses him again.

                                   MARIA
So hard to think about how many
                         Antarians are living out their
lives over there - either not
knowing or not caring that we've
                         come to visit.

As they look out from their picnic spot we see that Michael
and Maria are not far from the edge of a giant gorge or
canyon. Across the deep scar-like valley, an alien city can
just barely be seen, disappearing into the horizon.

                                   MARIA (CONT'D)
What did Chajicka tell you about it
                         before we left??

                                   MICHAEL
Not too much. The city is named
                         Vanteri, or something like that,
and it's not a terribly big place.
Maybe a little bigger than Roswell
is. It's the seat of a local
                         governorship that extends something
                         like twenty miles in every
                         direction - and there's urban
warfare ruining the city - rebels
trying to force the new King to
                         surrender it by continuous attacks
                         of attrition.

                                   MARIA
                         War is hell.
                             (Michael looks at her.)
                         Sorry... automatic reaction. But...
but do you think that you guys
could actually do something to stop
the fighting if you let people know
that you were here? Or... or would
you just get inescapably caught up
n the hell of it, unable to
                         extricate yourself or really make
                         things better, tipping the balance
a little further away from this guy
who killed your predecessor but not
                         defeating him?
                                                                   63.

                                   MICHAEL
                             (Lets out a big deep
                              breath.)
                         Yeah... that's something like the
                         ten million dollar question. If...
if we don't get a seriously
                         convincing pitch that interfering
in the war is going to change
things for the better, I think my
                         default assumption is that it's
better for US to stay out of it for
                         now. Keep learning things about
Antar maybe, keep growing up, and
maybe we'll be able to do some good
                         once we're grown up.
                             (He sighs and runs his
                              hands through Maria's
                              hair - she sighs in
                              contentment.)
On the other hand, I can see how
easy it would be to build a good
life on Earth and then not want to
give it up no matter how great the
need for us here is. Well, maybe
not easy in practical terms for me
to get a good job and a comfortable
                         life, but...

                                   MARIA
                         You're selling yourself short,
Michael - you always do that. No,
                         you'll probably never be an
                         academic genius, but you're
determined and not afraid to work
hard. In a few years, I could see
you as the grounded working guy,
and anybody in the gang who's gone
to college will be hitting you up
                         for spending money because they
spent all of their parent's cash on
                         school books.

Michael laughs softly at this. Maria reaches up and lays a
hand on the side of his face, quieting him instantly.

                                   MARIA (CONT'D)
                         I'm very serious.

He's shaken by that sincere faith.
                                                                   64.

                                   MICHAEL
Umm... do you want to stay out here
and watch longer, or maybe go back
                         to the house...

                                   MARIA
                             (Smiles enigmatically.)
                         Not quite, and no, respectively.

She pulls him back into a passionate kiss, and her hands
start to wander over Michael's body playfully.

               INT. SITTING ROOM - DAY

Max, Liz, Tess, and Chajicka have been talking for a long
time. There are a few snacks around and mostly-empty beverage
               tumblers.

                                   TESS
Okay, umm... what can you tell us
                         about - about our predecessors,
                         specifically?

               Liz swallows silently.

                                   MAX
Hey, umm... I - I'm not quite sure
how much I want to know, yet!

                                   TESS
Well, then, about just mine, then!
You... you can't keep me from
                         finding out just because you're
                         touchy about this stuff, Max.

Max and Chajicka share a long silent glance

                                   LIZ
Umm... she has a point, Max. And...
well, we can leave you alone if you
want, Tess... but I wouldn't mind
                         hearing it too.

Liz puts her hand at Max's side, (they're sitting next to
each other on a kind of couch,) and he nods. Chajicka takes a
               deep breath.

                                   CHAJICKA
Okay, well... I don't know that
much, myself, but - well, the young
queen was the Lady Anorrah of
                         Kabbald.
                                                                   65.

Her family as an old and fairly
                         conservative house of the nobility,
and... and she first really met the
royal family when she was, umm, was
seven cycles old, and came to live
at Court because of a threat to her
freedom back in her home region.

                                   TESS
                         Um, okay...

She breaks off as a cleaning robot enters the sitting room
and starts to suck dust away from the furniture. Liz starts
slightly, and Chajicka makes a gesture. The cleaning robot
starts working, and crosses the room to leave by the other
               door.

                                   MAX
                         Alright...

                                   CHAJICKA
                             (Smiling,)
I guess you don't have routine
appliances like that back on Earth?
                             (Tess shakes her head.)
                         Did you have a questions?

                                   TESS
Umm... so they were old childhood
                         friends? Umm... what about the
                         wedding and stuff like that?

                                   CHAJICKA
                         I... I don't know that much,
really. She and the prince -
                         Varnal, became close again several
years later - she moved back to the
capital city, and they spent time
                         together as they were passing
                         through towards adulthood. In fact,
at the time, the four of your
predecessors first became seen as a
group in the public eye. There's a
few reasons for that which are a
                         bit complicated to explain without
                         knowing much more about Antarian
                         society...

                                   MAX
We can give that a miss for now,
                         though.
                                                                   66.

                                   CHAJICKA
But... Anorrah was a good royal
                         match, for practical reasons. She
was of Varnal's age and they got
along well together, and she was
the daughter of a powerful family
who the old Royals wanted to keep
on their side in difficult times.
I'm not sure how much of that was a
factor in the two young people
meeting up, or if it was simply
                         evaluated afterwards once they'd
                         made a personal connection, but...

                                   TESS
And m... her family, the Kabbald -
how do they fit into the balance of
                         power now? I mean...

                                   CHAJICKA
They... they support the new order,
                         mostly... probably because they
don't see much value in prolonging
the conflict. The rebels are still
                         bottom dogs, as it were.

                                   TESS
I see. Umm... well, that's probably
                         enough for now.

                                   CHAJICKA
Enough talk at least. How about you
come back to the cookery, and I fix
                         you another of those snowflake
                         blends?

Tess smiles shyly and gets up. They exit.

                                   LIZ
                             (turning to Max.)
                         So, what now??

                                   MAX
Hmm... I'd like to look around, see
if Isabel and Alex are still
                         stashed away here somewhere.

                                   LIZ
                         Sure?
                             (Max gives her a curious
                              look.)
                         Alright, let's go then.
                                                                   67.

She takes his hand, and they walk through a hallway, and take
an open elevator (like a huge dumbwaiter) up to the second
               floor.

INT - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - DAY

Max and Liz step out of the dumbvator and look around, trying
               to get their bearings.

                                   MAX
I think that our rooms were over
                         this way.

They go together down the corridor.

                                   LIZ
                         Max - I, I think I understand why
                         you're nervous about learning more
                         of your predecessor the King.
But... but do you think it'll be
possible to - to remain in
ignorance and still live up to any
                         obligations that you have here?

Max opens a door and checks inside.

                                   MAX
Okay, neither of them are in the
guy's room. Well... I'm not too
sure that I'm on the hook for much,
just because we got here. I... I'm
still a kid, and wasn't brought up
                         to the requirements of royalty...
not that they're terribly fair for
those who ARE groomed to the crown
                         their whole lives.
                             (He sighs.)
                         Bottom line, I guess - I'll learn,
if I can get up the courage to
                         really listen. That's the first
                         step to understanding this planet
and its problems, after all. But...
but that's as far as I feel I can
                         go.

Liz silently hugs him, then turns to try another door.

                                   LIZ
This is Maria and Isabel's, I'm
pretty sure. And they're not here
                         either.
                                                                   68.

                                   MAX
                         Hmm... where else?

                                   LIZ
                         Not sure... Bathroom?

She points out a door further down the hallway. Max shrugs.

                                   MAX
Can't hurt to check I suppose,
                         though I don't think...

What Max doesn't think we never find out, because he breaks
off when he gets to the bathroom door and knocks. There's no
               answer.

                                   LIZ
I think I can hear running water,
                         or something.

Max hesitates, then opens the door.

INT - ALIEN WASHROOM - DAY

There is no natural light in here except whatever makes it
through the open door. Okay, let's see. The floor is tiled,
probably in a hexagonal or triangular pattern, and set up
with drains a bit like those of a locker room shower. Spaced
through the room are several fountains set on full blast,
shooting water out in concentric rings, splashing against the
walls and the ceilings. There are shelves against the wall,
many of which have plastic covers drawn so that the water
               won't get inside.

And Alex and Isabel are inside, wearing something like
underwear or bathing suits, and also partly covered with soap
suds, (even though every so often they get a bit splashed
which rinses some suds away.) Hair wet and everything. Alex
finishes spreading lather over Isabel's back and starts to
               scrub.

                                   ISABEL
Oh, hi Max - Liz. How was the talk
with our alien godmother? Or great
                         godmother or whatever??

                                   MAX
                         Ummm...

                                   LIZ
                         Didn't suck. See you downstairs
                         when you're done here?
                                                                   69.

                                   ALEX
Err - sure. I think that we could
                         probably both eat something.

                                   ISABEL
                         And - ooh, watch out!

She indicates one of the fountains near the door that is
gearing up for a terrific blast. Max hurriedly swings the
door closed, and we can hear a muffled splash.

Back out in the corridor Liz giggles, and Max shoots an
unimpressed look at her, which doesn't last for long. He
starts to shake his head, bemused.

                                   LIZ
                         Looks interesting. Maybe we could
                         try some squeaky-clean fun
                         ourselves??

                                   MAX
                         Umm... that has possibilities, I
                         admit.

Liz beams at him flirtaciously as they exit scene.

INT - SITTING ROOM - AFTERNOON

Max and Liz enter from one direction, Tess and Chajicka from
another. Max is about to pass through the room entirely when
Tess grabs his arm, fairly hard. Chajicka is moving to
               something amongst the bookshelves.

                                   MAX
I... we were on our way to the
                         cookery, to grab some...

                                   TESS
                             (stage whispering)
                         She's answering a call. I think - I
think that we should all be here,
                         to watch and listen.

                                   LIZ
                             (actually quiet)
                         A call? From who??

Chajicka finishes what she's doing, which involved a part of
the wall that had been quietly beeping, and suddenly a tv
sized screen brightens, showing the image of another
               Antarian.
                                                                   70.

(Not sure about the makeup requirements yet.) She is standing
off to the side, so that none of the kids are in the
               videophone's pickup range.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         Umm, yes, hello...
                             (She struggles visibly for
                              a name.)

                                   STRANGER
Greetings, and a blessing upon your
                         household, Lady Chaijicka Pereitan.
I am Turik Vannler, seneschal of
Prince Vorjal, the eldest son of
                         princess Kahvai, daughter of your
                         oath-friend, Queen Alinda...

                                   CHAJICKA
Yes, yes, I know who Vorjal and his
family are, even if I wasn't too
clear on you, Turik. And why are
you calling? Not simply to pass
along your liege's respects to an
old friend of his grandmother, I
                         think.

                                   TURIK
Very well, I shall move swiftly to
the matter at hand. You have, I
                         believe, unusual guests at your
estate this past night and day,
Lady. I... I am not certain of
their identity, but they arrived in
a vessel that was designed jby
people working for us, and so I
                         thought determining the identity of
the passengers would be a very good
                         thing to do.

               Chajicka sighs

                                   CHAJICKA
                         It... it's a little complicated,
                         Turik...

                                   TURIK
Come, we know that the vessel
                         arrived from that faraway
                         hinterland planet where the Royal
Four were sent for their safety.
Was it pirated by human meddlers?
                         Have the protectors lost their
                         charges and slunk cravenly home,
                         seeking to escape reprisal? Or...
                                                                   71.

or has the true king returned at
                         last??

               Max shuffles very nervously.

                                   CHAJICKA
                             (Blurts the words out
                              impulsively.)
He's not the king anymore... or not
the one you were expecting, Turik!
                         Whatever you and your people
planned, it didn't work out that
                         way...

                                   TURIK
Maybe he doesn't remember how to be
a king. We've always been prepared
                         for that possibility...

Michael and Maria enter at this point.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Oooh, I'll never learn to
                         understand that stuff.

Liz starts in surprise at that remark, cocks her head at
               Michael and Maria

                                   LIZ
                             (softly still.)
Shush. And... and is that another
language? I... I hear it exactly as
                         if it were English.

               They whisper amongst themselves.

                                   MARIA
Huh?? Liz, that is *nothing* like
                         English!!

                                   MAX
One more question to ask her, I
                         guess...

                                   CHAJICKA
                         I... I promised them all - that
they can go home as soon as they
wish, when they feel like they've
                         learned enough. I... I won't break
                         my word on that.

                                   TURIK
You also made promises to Alinda!
                                                                   72.

                                   CHAJICKA
Vorjal cannot require that of me,
as she could... Only Raydeleen is
empowered to speak on my friend's
                         behalf in such affairs.

                                   TURIK
                             (scoffing)
I thought you were a lady of
                         principles. Would such a person
insist that the words be spoken out
loud again before honoring her vow?

                                   CHAJICKA
All right, all right, I take your
point. But... but I will appeal to
Rayde. She can free me of that
                         obligation, if she so chooses.

                                   TURIK
Raydeleen Terras is of the same
mind on this subject. The Royal
Four must take their places in
their army. The time is long past.

                                   CHAJICKA
Simply because you can't keep from
                         losing the war??

She stabs down at a button, closing the connection, and turns
to the kids, looking a little embarassed.

                                   LIZ
                         Okay, first things first... how
were... were any of us able to
                         understand that?

Chajicka makes here way to a favorite chair, and smiles
               slightly.

                                   CHAJICKA
The three of you should be able to -
                         you, Max, and Tess.
                             (Max and Tess each nod.)
I... I was trying to work on that
while we talked today. For - for
one thing, since we were talking
                         about so much complicated stuff,
often I didn't have the English
                         words. So...
                                                                   73.

so I sort of expanded my thoughts
through the air, and used them to
convey some facility in Antarian to
the three of you. Guess none of you
                         noticed.

                                   TESS
Umm... actually, I think I sort of
did - just didn't really bring it
                         up I guess.

                                   MAX
Okay, well... I guess I'm more
                         interested in talking about the
                         actual conversation.

                                   MICHAEL
What did she say? Who was the guy,
                         and what did he say??

                                   CHAJICKA
We... we'll fill you - and Isabel
probably - in on that later,
                         Michael. Max: I... I'm sorry, I
                         shouldn't have given away your
secret. Just sort of said that
                         without thinking.

                                   MAX
                         It - it's alright. I understand.
But, well, what was all of that
                         stuff about promises to Queen
                         Alinda?

                                   CHAJICKA
Well... that's a bit complicated to
                         explain...

                                   MAX
                             (Suddenly losing his
                              temper a bit.)
                         I don't care about complicated! I
need to know what I'm up against,
                         and right now!!

                                   ISABEL
                             (From offscreen)
                         Max! What's wrong??

Isabel and Alex enter from the cookery direction. Max is
suddenly embarassed about snapping and instinctively moves
               closer to Liz for reassurance.
                                                                   74.

                                   MAX
Umm... I'm sorry for snapping at
you like that, Lady Chajicka. I...
I'm just very worried about things
                         all of a sudden.

                                   ALEX
Maybe we should all sit down and
                         discuss things calmly.

                                   LIZ
Yeah - and get food for anybody who
                         wants it.

INT. FORMAL DINING HALL - AFTERNOON

This is a very different space from the cookery - a little
more imposing and somehow stark and luxurious at the same
time. The feasting table is long without being terribly
oversized for the eight of them.

Chajicka sits at one end, with Max, Liz, and Michael down her
right side and Isabel, Alex, Maria down her left. Tess is at
the other end. The table is set with odd but workable alien
               dishes.

                                   MICHAEL
Okay, so let me see if I got this
straight. Sanren was the king, and
Alinda was his wife. They had five
children, and some of them are
                         still alive or have living
children. So - so why are they so
hung up on Max being King Vornal
                         and Isabel Princess Atina brought
                         back to life.

                                   CHAJICKA
It... it's a long story, but
                         basically because of their fame
while alive and the stories about
how they died and so on, all four
of you have a kind of glamour, a
                         sensationalistic mob appeal, that
                         the leaders of the Liaretian
                         faction, royal blood though they
                         might be, can't match.
                                                                   75.

                                   ISABEL
Right. It's heavily symbolic, in a
way - the four young people that
Kivar made the biggest example out
                         of executing, metaphorically
                         demonstrating that he was in
command and that the old order
ruled no longer - if we show
ourselves and declare for the old
                         Royals, then it demonstrates that
anybody can resist him and none of
                         his victories are secure.
                             (She sighs.)
                         I... I just wish that it didn't
                         have to be US.

                                   MAX
I... I'm not convinced that we have
do play the role that's been set
                         out for us.
                             (He eats something small
                              and red, using a utensil
                              with three tines arranged
                              in a circle.)
What's the deal with this prior
                         commitment? Did you actually
promise to bring us to the army, if
we happened to show up on your
door? What could have made Alinda
think that we'd come to you?

                                   CHAJICKA
Well, to start off with - they made
the flight out to Earth from this
area. Because it's so remote, and
Kivar isn't able to tell what's
going on in these parts easily
without spending a lot of money and
effort on monitoring it. I... I
                         guess that they intentionally
                         programmed the same co-ordinates
for the return journey, so that
you'd be relatively safe, and so
that there'd be one friendly person
in the vicinity that you could come
to - if you knew about me or could
sense the emotions in my mind.

                                   LIZ
Put - put aside the promise for a
                         moment, Chajicka, if you can.
And... and the one you made to us.
                                                                   76.

Do - do you think that going to
join Turik and the people he works
for is the right thing to do?

Chajicka takes a sip of something souplike before answering.

                                   CHAJICKA
                         I... I don't know, Liz. You - well,
                         your friends at least, they'll
probably be able to help some
people. But... but there's a reason
that I stay up here in the middle
                         of nowhere. War is tshariznag.

There are some looks exchange, but nobody asks for a
               translation.

                                   MARIA
That... that sort of brings up
something else. If - if any of them
were to join the whole revolution
                         thingee... what, what about us??
Would - would we be able to come
                         with them?

                                   MICHAEL
                         I... I don't want you following me
                         into some alien ar...

                                   CHAJICKA
I'm not really sure. You wouldn't
be valuable in and of yourselves...
but if I know Vorjal, he might be
willing to make a few concessions
like this in order to keep the
                         people he does want happy.

                                   ALEX
But... but we might be carefully
kept secrets then, because we don't
fit the image that they want to
                         project.

               Chajicka nods sadly.

                                   LIZ
And... and if we don't go with
                         them, what else??
                                                                   77.

                                   CHAJICKA
Well, you're welcome to stay with
me, but that probably isn't a
solution you'd be happy with in the
long term. And... and getting home
                         would be a problem.

                                   MARIA
We couldn't just fly the ship home
                         ourselves? It didn't look too
                         complicated.

                                   TESS
I... I think Turik will want to
take the ship when he gets us,
Maria. It may not be worthwhile as
a vessel of war, but it's part of
the mythology of the Royal Four.

                                   CHAJICKA
Yes... and it could be used for
                         important courier runs to other
                         planets besides.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Hmmph.

A pall falls over the table as they continue to eat.

INT. LIZ AND TESS' ROOM - EVENING

Liz sits on her bed, perusing a scroll written with alien
characters. Tess is sitting up at a desk, watching a
televised stage comedy with Antarian performers. Then Liz
               puts the scroll aside.

                                   LIZ
So... what do you think of all of
this stuff, Tess? The war, the
demand that the four of you stay
                         here?

                                   TESS
I'm watching this! Can we talk
                         later?

               Liz groans loudly.

                                   LIZ
                         Tess, this is important!
                                                                   78.

                                   TESS
                             (Shuts off the screen and
                              turns to face Liz.)
Alright, you want to know what I
think? I... I want to go with it,
okay? Life on Earth was never that
great for me, and ever since I was
                         little I've been waiting for
                         something that matters! Something
that might be hard, and dangerous,
but where I'd be far away from
Earth and all of its problems,
among the stars, having a chance to
                         help alien people.
                             (beat.)
And, to be brutally honest, I hope
that Max comes too, and that you
find your way back home to Earth
and stay LIGHT YEARS AWAY FROM HIM!

Liz is awestruck for a moment.

                                   LIZ
                             (Starts quietly)
I... I cannot believe that you
                         finally said that out loud.

                                   TESS
Shouldn't have been that much of a
                         shocker.

                                   LIZ
                             (Voice rising.)
Well, Max might stay here, and I
might go home to Earth, but if you
think that he's going to turn to
you, no matter what the Antarian
public want to see, no matter what
                         may have happened between Anorrah
                         of Kabbald and Prince Varnal...
He'll NEVER TOUCH YOU like that!!

                                   TESS
                             (Losing her own temper.)
                         You little meddler! It wasn't...
wasn't supposed to be this way. But
you had to go and hook him in with
those big sad brown eyes before I
even had a... a chance to get to
                         Roswell and...
                                                                   79.

                                   LIZ
Grow UP, Tess! Nobody's life is how
they expected it or planned for
it... and that includes both of us.
If anybody's the meddler here, it
was you - thinking that what
happened here so long ago gave you
the right to ruin what Max had
found with me, back home in
Roswell. And here's one more news
flash... you feel like nothing on
                         Earth matters, but the connection
you have with Max, and Isabel and
Michael could matter a lot - if you
just kept from messing it up by
                         insisting on destiny and whatever
else they can't deal with! They
want to be friends, they want to be
family! Heck, Max wanted me to room
with you here so that we could have
a chance of burying the hatchet.

                                   TESS
                             (Snide.)
Bang-up job you're doing with that!

                                   LIZ
Well, umm... I'm sorry that I said
some of those things so mean.
But... but you kind of... oh, never
mind. I don't really want to rehash
                         everything and start arguing about
                         who started it.

Liz collapses back on her bed, opens the scroll for a moment,
and then closes it and tosses it onto a dresser, frustrated.

Tess turns back to the television screen, but doesn't switch
it back on. Sighing, she takes a seat and pulls it over to
               Liz's side of the room.

                                   TESS
                         I... I'm trying.
                             (Liz looks up.)
I know that - that things between
Max and I may never turn into the
grand romantic story that I'd hoped
for, and I'm trying to adjust my
                         life to that.
                                                                   80.

It's not your fault and it's not
his fault, just the way things
worked out, and if I'd been less
                         closed-off it might have happened
to me somewhere along the line too.

                                   LIZ
It still could. Earth is a big
place, and... well, you never know
                         what might happen.

                                   TESS
It could... if I go back to Earth.
But... but what I said about how
joining the cause here has an
                         attraction - that's still true,
even if Max isn't a part of it. Or
if Max and you are both of it, and
                         you stay an item.

                                   LIZ
Oh. Not quite sure what to say to
                         that I guess.

                                   TESS
It's okay. We won't have to talk
much more in five seconds or so.
                             (Pause)
                         Three, two, one... dammit, a
                         half...

There is a knocking at the door. Liz raises an eyebrow, and
               Tess smiles.

                                   LIZ
                         Umm... come in?

The door opens - it's Max.

                                   TESS
Right. That's my cue to go off
                         somewhere. The moon's starting to
get high in the sky - maybe I'll
watch it come out through the
                         twilight.

                                   LIZ
I... I wish that you had someone
here to watch it with, Tess. I - I
                         really do.

               Tess smiles at her.
                                                                   81.

                                   TESS
I know that you do. But don't worry
about me. I'm a tough cookie.

And with that, Tess leaves. Max swivels an incredulous stare
               from her to Liz.

                                   MAX
Michael said that the two of you
were catfighting in here! And then
I come and see the two of you
acting like... like I'm not even
                         sure what...

                                   LIZ
                         Well, we were never actually
                         wrestling, pulling hair, or tearing
                         clothes off... would you have
                         preferred that?
                             (She nudges Max teasingly)
There was a bit of melodrama, yeah,
but I think that it's cleared the
air and we understand each other a
                         bit better now.

                                   MAX
Okay. And here ends the point where
                         we're talking about Tess.

               Liz grins.

                                   LIZ
                         Definitely!
                             (She reaches up with both
                              arms around his neck and
                              kisses him.)
So... anything you want to do other
than hang around here and make out?

                                   MAX
It's a little hard to think of
                         anything else while you're right
here with me... but - well, to be
honest I dunno. The moonlit stroll
thing seems tempting, but I feel
nervous about doing it if Tess is
                         already out there.

                                   LIZ
Hmm... I guess you have a point.
                             (She runs a hand through
                              Max's hair.)
                                                                   82.

No sense in rubbing it in, or
                         anything like that.

                                   MAX
Maybe we can try that another
                         night.
                             (Liz beams.)
If we were back home, I'd suggest
watching a movie or doing some
                         channel surfing, but...

                                   LIZ
Ooooh! Tess was looking at an alien
TV - might be just the thing.
                             (Max looks dubious.)
Yeah, really it will. Umm... but
we'll need somewhere that we can
sit side by side and watch it - I
think that there was an upstairs
                         parlour or something...

                                   MAX
                             (Smiles.)
Wait a second - why sit?

Liz doesn't reply immediately. Max pulls her over to the
desk, grabs the television, (which is very light, flat, and
not wired into anything,) and then heads back to Liz's bed.
He probs the screen up on the dresser at the foot of the bed,
turns it on, and fluffs up the pillows so that they could
               both lie back against them.

                                   LIZ
Hmm... okay, I have to admit, there
are times when I like the way your
                         mind works, Max Evans.

                                   MAX
I always love everything about your
mind, Liz Parker... not to mention
a few of my other favorite things
                         about you...

He tickles Liz and maybe squeezes just a bit as they get
               settled in the bed.

               INT. GUYS' BEDROOM - NIGHT

Alex and Michael are sitting around.

                                   MICHAEL
Come on - showering together? With
                         Isabel?? You're joking with me.
                                                                   83.

                                   ALEX
Uh, no actually... we were both in
                         our underwear, but still...
                             (He sighs fondly,
                              remembering.)
And what were you and Maria up to
                         all day, anyway??

                                   MICHAEL
Ehh, this and that, you know.
                         Walking around, talking, eating.
And, okay, yeah, we kinduv kissed a
lot, but no clothes came off or
                         anything.

                                   ALEX
                         Alright...

There's a knock at the door, and Michael goes up and gets it.
               Maria and Isabel enter.

                                   MICHAEL
Well hello there! And what can we
do for you to lovely babes!

                                   MARIA
                             (giggling softly.)
There's a heated pool down in the
                         under-level. I thought that you
might want to check it out.

                                   MICHAEL
                             (raises eyebrows.)
                         Hmm... has possibilities. Wait a
second - none of us brought bathing
                         suits or anything.

Maria gives him a long once-over.

                                   MARIA
I... I think that you'll be able to
work out some way of dealing with
                         that little problem.

                                   MICHAEL
And... and have you solved the
                         problem for yourself?

                                   MARIA
                             (sing-song)
                         You'll find out soon enough...
                                                                   84.

She leads him quickly back out of the room. Alex turns to
               Isabel.

                                   ALEX
Umm, okay, so - good for them. What
                         about the two of us?

                                   ISABEL
                             (Kisses him.)
I dunno... not really feeling up
                         for anything fancy after everything
                         that's happened today.

                                   ALEX
                         Yeah... like sleeping in,
exploring, fun in the shower, and a
big fancy dinner was so hard on
                         you.

                                   ISABEL
No... you know what I mean, I
                         think.

                                   ALEX
Yeah, was just trying to make you
                         laugh.

                                   ISABEL
                         Oh. Sorry.

She tries her best grin, and they sit down side by side on
               Alex's bed.

                                   ALEX
Don't worry, baby. I think that Max
has a plan... and if you don't want
to stay here much longer, then he's
not going to let anyone make you.

                                   ISABEL
How... how can you be so sure of
that? I mean... it's just the seven
of us or so against an ENTIRE
planet out there. Some of them
probably want to kill us, and the
other half expect me to stick
around and... and somehow solve all
of their problems. How can I do
                         that? The last... I, Alex - I don't
                         wanna die as a martyr.
                                                                   85.

                                   ALEX
Only a few people ever do... the
                         ones who've found something so
powerful to believe in that it
                         makes everything else right.

He puts his arm around her and they hold each other tight.
After a moment Isabel looks at Alex and gets a provocative
               look on her face.

                                   ISABEL
Do you know what else I don't want
                         to die as, Alex??

                                   ALEX
Umm... no, not really. A teenager?

                                   ISABEL
No, that wasn't what I was going to
say. Though I guess it's true too.

                                   ALEX
Okay, then what were you going to
                         say?

                                   ISABEL
That I'm really not wild about the
idea of dying as a virgin.

Alex's eyes sort of pop out and he stiffens.

                                   ISABEL (CONT'D)
Oh, you are just too easy to freak
                         out, Alex Whitman.

                                   ALEX
And... and you're way too quick to
                         tease sometimes, Isabel. Of course,
if you do want some help dealing
with the virgin situation, I'll be
glad to participate. I'm in the
same boat, after all, and it just
sort of makes sense, well, not from
                         a technical perspective I guess,
                         but...

                                   ISABEL
Well... we could start by just
talking about it, I guess. Sex.
                         Sexual fantasies. Whether we've
started experimenting on our own or
                         not.
                                                                   86.

                                   ALEX
Do... do I have to go first?

                                   ISABEL
                         Only if you want to.

                                   ALEX
No... I want to hear yours first.

                                   ISABEL
                         Alright, let's see. This is
probably corny and poofy, but I see
                         a luxury-class bedroom suite, dark
purple upholstery and so on... and
you waiting for me lying on the
                         bed...

               ROMANTIC SONG MONTAGE - NIGHT

Not sure what music, yet. 'Somebody to love' by Amanda Stott
or 'Two people fell in love' by Brad Paisley could work. Show
scenes from the following, probably intercut:

               - Max and Liz, cuddled together on her bed, watching the
alien television, alternately laughing and baffled. They
touch each other tenderly and talk about nothing much. Liz
falls asleep, and Max runs his fingers through her hair as
               she snoozes.

               - Michael and Maria frolic in the pool, just wearing their
underwear probably. Kiss in the water, come out at the end,
serious making out action, with Maria lying on top of him,
pressing him down to the deck.

               - Isabel and Alex sitting very close together on a loveseat
in the upstairs parlour, talking, giggling nervously,
whispering things in each other's ears.

               - Tess walking around outside in the moonlight. She sees
someone else coming up the front walk, a beautiful Antarian
woman with grey-pink skin, orange-red hair, and brown eyes.
At first Tess is freaked out and almost runs away, but
something stops her. As the stranger just stands there, Tess
looks back at her, trying to understand. Finally, she nods
               just slightly.

               End of montage.
                                                                   87.

               INT. COOKERY - MORNING

Liz and Isabel are the first in here. Making breakfast with
alien foods has started to become routine. Tess enters from
the sitting room with the strange Antarian woman.

                                   LIZ
                             (Startled.)
Umm... hi Tess. Who's your friend??

                                   TESS
Morning. This is Raydeleen - the
woman who Chajicka was wanting to
                         talk to.
                             (She pauses meaningfully.)
The one who could void her promises
                         to Queen Emeritus Alinda.

                                   ISABEL
Alright, hi Raydeleen. And - well,
                         how does that work exactly?
                         Chajicka said something about you
                         being Alinda's "Gervehllkah," but
she didn't seem too keen on
                         explaining just what that meant.

               Raydeleen hesitates before speaking.

                                   RAYDELEEN
Well, it's not, umm, not the
                         easiest cultural concept to explain
to - well, to anybody who didn't
                         grow up familiar with it.
                         Basically, I'm a stand-in,
                         empowered to take her Majesty's
place in matters both personal and
                         political, even to make decisions
on her behalf if and when that is
                         so required.
                             (She hesitates.)
Alinda is a lady of great influence
and much respected even by her
enemies... but her health for the
last few years does not allow her
the chances to accomplish even a
fraction of what she would wish to.
Therefore... I see to what matters
                         I can, on her behalf.

                                   ISABEL
                         So, if you're a stand-in on a
                         personal level...
                                                                   88.

does that mean that Max and I
should react to you as if we were
                         being directly reunited with Alinda
herself? I mean, I would like to
meet her, my genetic grandmother or
                         whatever, but...

                                   MAX
                             (Entering from the far
                              side of the room with
                              Michael.)
React to who as if they were the
                         old queen??

                                   RAYDELEEN
Umm... you don't have to get any
more 'personal' with me than you're
                         comfortable with. Meeting you kids
is a bit more personal than I
usually have to deal with, I admit.
                         But... grandmother? I... I thought
you would think of Alinda as your
                         mother, Isabel...

                                   ISABEL
                             (Sharply)
How... how do you know my name? Did
                         Tess tell you??

                                   RAYDELEEN
That she did not need to do. I... I
have known a few key details about
the four of you, and your lives on
Earth, for a little while now.
Didn't expect that you'd come home
                         quite so suddenly, but apparently
that was a mistake of some sort.

                                   MAX
Yeah, it really was. As far as the
'grandmother' thing - well, a few
of us got the idea that it might be
easier to think of our predecessors
as genetic parents instead of, of
us having lived before. After all,
we have a human side to our DNA...

                                   RAYDELEEN
Yes, but genes are not everything,
                         Max. Your... your psyche, your
spirit, is that of King Varnal,
rescued from his prior life as he
                         died, and implanted into the...
                                                                   89.

                         the hybridized cell that
represented the very start of your
                         life.

                                   LIZ
                         So... so Antarians can manipulate
                         souls like they're something
physical? How... how can you be
                         sure that the implantation took
                         correctly? That the soul didn't
mutate in the process to something
                         that's unique?

Raydeleen turns to look at Liz, respect and approval clear in
               her face.

                                   RAYDELEEN
I... I'm not sure if what the
                         Essentologists work with is what
humans think of as the 'soul', but
there is a pattern of energy that
is supported by the body and the
brain of a living person, that can
                         under certain circumstances be
transferred from body to body - or
                         even into artificial containment
                         units. The processes are not
                         perfectly understood, and there are
risks - but there are also tests
that can be taken, to match your
                         friends' essences against the
recorded spirit pattern of the true
                         Royal Four.

By this point everybody has gathered around the edges of the
               Cookery.

                                   ISABEL
Umm... let's leave that one for
now. I - I'm not entirely sure that
I'm ready to know if I'm truly the
                         princess yet. Keep the glass
                         slipper away from me.

                                   MARIA
                         The glass slipper is Cinderella,
and she wasn't a princess until
after her identity had been proved
with the slipper. Also, I don't
                         think that our Antarian friends
                         catch the reference.
                                                                   90.

                                   MAX
Okay, bottom line - Turik said that
you were going to back him up,
require Chajicka to go through with
her promise, and that we'd all end
up staying here and joining the
                         war. What do you think?

                                   RAYDELEEN
I... I'm not sure. I'd like to see
you guys helping us out, I admit...
but I'm not sure if it's right,
especially if you don't really want
to come. Or whether it's what
                         Alinda would have wanted.

                                   TESS
                         Can't you just ask her?

                                   RAYDELEEN
She's on Sanctuary at the moment -
a hideout that we have on a fairly
                         distant planet, and undergoing
                         medical treatments too. I don't
think I'd be able to get a message
through to her soon enough without
                         betraying the location to Kivar's
people. And events are going to
move quickly right here if I
                         hesitate.
                             (She sighs, idly reaches
                              for some darva, tears off
                              a chunk and munches on
                              it.)
But... I think that I have enough
time to learn something about you
guys, since I don't really have
                         enough information to make a
                         decision.

                                   CHAJICKA
Alright, back out front I guess...

                                   RAYDELEEN
                             (Suddenly firm.)
No. I would talk with the royal
four alone - in your upstairs
                         parlour, if that's quite alright.
                         You can entertain the human
children in the sitting room if you
                         so choose.

Max and Liz trade an uncertain look.
                                                                   91.

                                   MAX
Liz is my partner in all things. I
don't want her excluded from this,
                         if it's so important...

                                   RAYDELEEN
                         Max, please, don't protest too
much. I'll talk with Liz and the
others a bit later, but... but this
is getting to be a bit too much for
me to deal with, and talking with
the four of you first would be
                         easier I think.

                                   ISABEL
Max, come on. It'll be okay.

Liz nods, and the two groups split up.

               INT. UPSTAIRS PARLOUR - MORNING

Raydeleen, Max, Isabel, and Tess awkwardly take seats.

                                   RAYDELEEN
Okay, Max. What did it feel like,
being a captive of the FBI Special
Unit, helpless and at the mercy of
                         their leader.

               Max does an uncomfortable take.

                                   RAYDELEEN (CONT'D)
                             (does something a bit like
                              a shrug.)
Sorry, I like to ask the hard
questions - they tend to lead
                         further than easy ones.

               INT. SITTING ROOM - DAY

               And four are waiting...

                                   MARIA
They... they've been up there for a
                         long time, haven't they??

                                   ALEX
                             (Checks a watch.)
Something like an hour and a
                         quarter.
                                                                   92.

                                   LIZ
Oh, that reminds me. Has anyone
managed to figure out about how
long Antar's day is, compared to
                         ours??

                                   MARIA
                         Not me.

                                   ALEX
                         Hmm... okay, let's see. Umm...
                         sunrise yesterday was something
like 7:30 pm by this watch, and
this morning it was 6:20 pm. So...
                         twenty-two hours and fifty minutes?

                                   CHAJICKA
It doesn't matter what the clocks
say. They'll be done when they're
                         done.

                                   MARIA
                         That doesn't help.

               INT. PARLOUR - NOON

The five of them have already been through a lot. Rayde is
touching Isabel, and then lets go. Isabel's eyes open and she
moans softly, coming out of an alien connection. Max and
Michael are tense, but Tess looks a bit bored.

                                   RAYDELEEN
                         Very well, I am satisfied.
Requiring you to join the cause at
this point would be... counter to
our aims. But... but you do have
obligations here, Max, and I would
not be vigilant about my own duty
if I allowed you to forget that.

                                   TESS
Hey, wait a second! What if... if I
want to stay here, and go with you
                         by myself?

               Everyone's surprised by this suggestion.
                                                                   93.

                                   ISABEL
Are... are you sure, Tess? If we
take the ship home -- well, it
might be hard for you to find any
other way back. Should you change
                         your mind, I mean.

                                   TESS
                             (Stamping a foot, not un
                              cute-ly.)
                         I'm serious about this! What...
what is there back on Earth for me?

                                   RAYDELEEN
I'm not sure what there would be
here on Antar for you, Tess.
Alone... you might be harmful in
terms of public relations - a
                         dishonored bride, if Max didn't
choose to keep you with him.
There'd be whispers and gossip, at
least. And... and it would probably
be socially hard for you, at least
until we can use hormone treatments
to allow your Antarian heritage to
show in your appearance. I figured
that it would be better if you were
all together, so that you'd be
                         going through it together. There
are a few humans in the rebel army,
                         but not that ma--

                                   MICHAEL
                         There are??

                                   RAYDELEEN
                         Yeah, the children of 'abductees'
long ago - slaves and scouting
                         mission subjects.
                             (Pauses meaningfully.)
                         I had a human grandmother.

                                   MAX
                         Oh. I... I guess I should have
                         expected that.

               Rayde smiles at him.

                                   RAYDELEEN
Yes, it shows in my eyes and my
                         hair. Everybody says so.
                                                                   94.

                                   MICHAEL
You... you can stay if you want,
Tess - at least, as far as I'm
concerned. But I hope that you do
come back. I'd miss having someone
like you to practice my powers
                         with.

                                   RAYDELEEN
The four of you should stay
                         together, I think. You're stronger
that way, and there will be some
                         dangers.

                                   MAX
Yes, we know that there are enemy
                         alien agents on Earth somewhere,
                         hunting for us.

                                   TESS
                         Okay... I -- I'll think about it,
                         at least.

                                   RAYDELEEN
Good. And on that note, Max... I
have some things to tell you about,
                         that should help hone your
                         strengths and prepare you for
                         what's to come.

INT. FIRST FLOOR LANDING - NOON

A small space near the front door of Chajicka's house, with
exits to the sitting room, down a long hall towards the back
of the house, and up a ladder to the second floor. Liz rushes
in from the sitting room, nervous and excited all at once,
and then Max scrambles down the ladder. Isabel, Michael,
               Rayde, and Tess follow him.

                                   LIZ
                         So... was anything decided?

Alex enters as well. Max shoots a look at Rayde, and she nods
               to him.

                                   MAX
Rayde has... has agreed to help us
all go home. She says she'll be
                         able to find hyperspace co
ordinates for Earth, and use them
                         to program the ship.
                                                                   95.

                                   MARIA
                             (coming onscreen)
Oh, that's great news. Not that...
well, no offense to your planet and
                         everything, but I'm... I'm not
quite ready to live here yet.

                                   MICHAEL
Well, you've got years yet to make
                         that decision, I guess.

He crosses over and hugs Maria

                                   ALEX
                             (As he steps near to
                              Isabel)
                         Hey, what?

                                   ISABEL
Umm... we made a promise to Rayde
in exchange. The three of us get
six Earth years, back there. Then
we're supposed to come back -
assuming that we've been able to
                         protect our means of
                         transportation.

                                   LIZ
                             (Seeing it.)
Six years - long enough to finish
high school and go through college,
if you choose, or work McJobs for a
                         while.

                                   MARIA
Wait a second - the three of you??

She shoots a look at Tess

                                   TESS
                         I... I haven't made up my mind
whether to stay here or with the
rest of the gang, though Rayde is
                         discouraging me from the former.

Chajicka enters, from down the hall

                                   CHAJICKA
She can discourage you from joining
her people, but I'm inviting you to
remain if you wish, Tess. And you
wouldn't have to stay here the
                         whole time.
                                                                   96.

I know other people around the
planet who you might like to meet

                                   RAYDELEEN
I'm not convinced that Tess would
be safe enough in your care,
                         Chajicka. Kivar's people will find
out that she's here soon enough -
he might want to capture her, or
kill her, as a strike against us.

                                   CHAJICKA
                             (Irritated)
Yes, and she'd be so safe taking a
                         part in your war...

                                   TESS
                         Come on, guys, that's enough
fighting over li'l old me. Thanks
for the offer, Chaj, and I'll take
                         it into consideration - including
                         the risks.

                                   ALEX
How about lunch? You guys have been
                         sequestered up there for hours.

                                   RAYDELEEN
Indeed, I feel the pangs of hunger.
Liz, Maria, Alex - would you care
to assist me in preparing a meal of
                         celebration?

               They exchange glances.

                                   LIZ
Okay I guess, just tell us what to
                         do.

                                   ISABEL
                         Oh, I don't think that'll be a
                         problem for her.

Rayde gathers up her helpers and hustles them down the hall.
Turning around, she delivers one parting shot to Chajicka

                                   RAYDELEEN
And keep those foolish robots of
yours out of the cookery until
                         we're done!

And now, because we're running low on time, start another...
                                                                   97.

               MONTAGE OF SEVERAL DAYS ACTION

Music - something instrumental, maybe classical..

Rayde, Liz, Maria, and Alex serve a fancy Antarian feast to
the others in the formal dining room, and then all of them
               eat together.

Rayde leaves, with all of the kids waving goodbye. (Maybe
               that gesture puzzles her.)

A big tag game out in the BACK YARD of Chajicka's house, with
the teenagers running around the parked ship like seven-year
               olds.

Max and Liz taking a turn in the hot tub, maybe hands under
               swimsuits.

               Much exploring of the mansion.

Alex and Isabel have a moonlit picnic.

Another big discussion in the drawing room, maybe a map of
some part of Antar propped up as a visual aid, or a schematic
diagram of various power blocks and their alliances.

Michael and Maria waking up snuggling, without any clear
inference of what happened the night before.

               End of montage...

               INT. SITTING ROOM - MORNING

Max, Liz, Chajicka, Tess, Isabel, and Alex are present,
talking and having a casual breakfast or something.

                                   ALEX
So, when did Rayde say that she was
                         going to arrive?

                                   CHAJICKA
In your terms... something like two
                         hours from now.

                                   MAX
Good... I'm kind of eager to get
                         going, actually. It's been great
                         staying with you Chajicka, learning
                         and exploring this side of
                         ourselves...
                                                                   98.

but we'll have been missing for
several days back on Earth, and my
parents are probably going crazy by
                         this point.

                                   LIZ
                         Yeah, not just yours either.
                             (She hugs Max's arm to
                              her.)
At least I'm not quite as afraid of
what an alien planet might hold as
                         I was before.

                                   ISABEL
                             (Looking out the window.)
Umm, hate to put a dark note on
this happy moment, but Max - maybe
                         you should come over here.

                                   MAX
                         Oh, no, what is it??

An angle out the window on Chajicka's front lawn shows
uniformed people arranging themselves in a rough cordon
               across the house.

Liz approaches and looks past Isabel and Max as best she can.

                                   LIZ
                         Soldiers??

                                   ISABEL
Or... or some sort of organized
                         force, at least.

                                   MAX
                         Kivar's people??

Chajicka hasn't even looked towards the window, but she
               speaks with authority.

                                   CHAJICKA
I don't think so. His goons would
be inside already. No, this seems
more like a bit of 'friendly'
                         persuasion.

                                   ALEX
                             (Suddenly getting it.)
That Turik guy? Isn't... I mean,
why wouldn't he let us go if Rayde
took our side? She called off the
                         promise...
                                                                   99.

                                   TESS
He believes in the cause. Since the
promise won't work, he just decides
                         to take more direct action.

                                   LIZ
Oh, man... and just when we'd got
                         everything sorted out.

                                   MAX
Okay, well... come on, let's check
                         out back. That's the important
place, so they'll probably have it
                         covered already. And then, well,
I'll talk to whoever's in charge.

                                   ISABEL
Do you think that's really going to
                         work, Max?

He shoots an anxious look at her.

                                   MAX
                         No, but something has to.

EXT. CHAJICKA'S BACK YARD - MORNING

A pretty morning, if it weren't for all the guards. The alien
ship is parked maybe fifty feet from the back door. Max pokes
his head out the door, sees guards between the house and the
ship. The guards see him too and a few of them make waving
               gestures.

Max sighs, makes a 'come-on' gesture back into the house, and
emerges fully. Michael and Liz follow him. Together they move
up to the nearest guard, all poker faces.

                                   MAX
Alright, who's in charge of you
                         guys?

                                   NEAREST GUARD
                         Your Majesty, Lord Turik is
commanding our company. I... I can
                         have him sent for, if...

                                   MICHAEL
                         Yeah, do tha--

Suddenly Turik appears from the other side of the ship, where
nobody would have been able to see him.
                                                                  100.

                                   TURIK
                         No need. Greetings, your Majesties.
(Bows very deep to Max and
                              Liz, to their surprise,
                              then turns to nod at
                              Michael.)
Lord General. A pleasure to see you
                         all once again.

                                   MAX
Cut the pleasantries. What is the
                         meaning of this, surrounding Lady
                         Chajicka's house with guards. At
first we thought that Kivar had
                         found us.

                                   TURIK
Apologies, sire - I meant not to
cause you such alarm. This is
                         simply a form of friendly
persuasion for the Royals to return
                         to their true duty.

                                   LIZ
                         But Raydeleen...

                                   TURIK
May I speak plainly, my Queen?

Max and Liz can't help but share a glance - it's now plain
that he thinks Liz is Tess, or something of the sort.

                                   LIZ
                         Could we really stop you?

                                   TURIK
Not from doing what I have to do -
                         and explaining the situation while
                         maintaining courtly protocols would
                         just slow everybody down.

                                   MAX
Very well, speak as you wish,
                         remembering that outright
                         disrespect may require its own
                         payment.
                                                                  101.

                                   TURIK
All right. I don't know how you
managed to tweedle Rayde or nudge
her into feeling sorry for you, but
I don't intend to let her have the
final word, and neither does my
                         lord, the Prince Vorjal.

                                   MAX
                         Find. Friendly persuasion, you
said. Well, I do not intend to be
so lightly moved from my chosen
course. If we do not voluntarily go
with you, then what happens? Will
you storm the good Lady's house and
                         take us all prisoners?

                                   TURIK
No, Max. But neither will we allow
you to return to the planet Earth
in that fine vessel, or to leave
the environs of the house. I have
five and forty elite soldiers under
my command here - you cannot
overwhelm them by themselves, and I
would urge you not to try.

                                   MICHAEL
                         So it's a stalemate?

                                   TURIK
                         Until Kivar notices all the
activity out here on some spy
satellite or another, and sneds his
own forces in to kill or capture
anyone he finds. I don't think that
                         any of us want that.

                                   MAX
                             (Suddenly his poker face
                              cracks just a little.)
No, we don't. Excuse me, please,
but I must return inside, notify my
good sister and our friends of the
                         situation.

Turik smiles a creepy alien smile that has the anticipation
               of victory in it.

                                   TURIK
                         By all means, your Majesty.

Our heroes beat a hasty retreat back inside.
                                                                  102.

               INT. DINING ROOM - DAY

War council is now in session. All of the kids are sitting at
the dining room table making plans, except for Tess, who is
standing and watching from next to a doorway. Chaijicka is
also seated, in her customary place at the head of the table.

                                   ISABEL
So, it's a game of alien chicken?
Whoever backs down first loses, and
if neither of us back down as the
train, ie Kivar, arrive, then we
                         all lose?

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, looks like, though I'm not
sure if I've heard of a variety of
                         chicken that involves a train.

Isabel shoots Michael a nasty look.

                                   CHAJICKA
While that Turik said is true, I
                         suspect he was attempting to
                         indirectly mislead you - Kivar's
people will notice activity in this
region, and eventually he will send
an expedition in force. He may have
                         already heard rumors, with Turik
                         and Rayde both expressing an
                         interest. However, I don't think
that we need to worry about that
                         terribly soon yet.

                                   MAX
So he's trying to sucker us, just a
                         little - he probably has
                         information about when the train
will be coming, to use Isabel's
metaphor, and if he's going to
bail, he'll do it at the last
                         moment. Meanwhile, we're supposed
to be sweating it out, not knowing
when the midnight hour will strike.

                                   ALEX
There's some electronic gear - or
                         something considerably beyond Earth
electronics - in the mansion that
may help us reach parity in terms
                         of getting the train schedule.
                                                                  103.

                                   LIZ
Good. But still, I think that we
need to find some way out of the
whole chicken game. A plan to get
out to the ship, despite the
guards, and take off no matter what
they can do. Ideally to transit
                         without landing, once we're
                         airborne.

                                   ISABEL
We'll need to get the numbers from
                         Rayde, before we do that.

                                   MARIA
She's probably in the area, trying
to find some way to signal us
                         without letting Turik's people
                         know.
                             (She considers.)
Rayde can't just pull rank on Turik
and make the guards go home, can
                         she?

                                   CHAJICKA
                         No, unfortunately. Her borrowed
                         moral authority is considerable,
but neither she nor Alinda are
truly officers in the rebel army.
And that's what it would take to
                         command the guards in this
                         situation.

There's a bummed-out moment as the gang considers this.

                                   MAX
Okay, so - we need the numbers from
Rayde. We need to work out some
unexpected way past the guards and
to the ship. And we'll probably
need some sort of diversion while
we make our move. Anything else to
work on, just to start with?

                                   MICHAEL
                         Seems quite enough

                                   ISABEL
Yeah. Alex and I will get started
on the Rayde connection - I might
                         have an idea for that.
                                                                  104.

                                   MICHAEL
Yeah, and I think I've got a plan
                         for the great escape itself.

                                   MARIA
                         I'm with you, Spaceboy.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Glad to hear it!

Maria, Michael, Isabel, Alex, and Chajicka all exit in
               various directions.

                                   MAX
So, I guess that leaves us with a
                         diversion.

                                   LIZ
Yeah it does... and I think that
we're going to need your help with
                         it, Tess.

Tess jumps in surprise at being called on.

                                   TESS
                         Why... why me?

               Max looks at Liz too.

                                   LIZ
Because I think that you can
believably betray us - take Turik a
plan to warn him when and how we'll
                         be leaving the mansion.

                                   MAX
                         And it'll be a fake, a red
                         herring??

                                   TESS
Well, now that the word 'betrayal'
                         is mentioned, you probably won't
tell me the real plan until you're
                         all ready to leave.
                             (She takes a deep breath.)
But why should I go out there and
                         tell him anything, really?

                                   MAX
Maybe you don't want to get
captured any more than the rest of
                         us to.
                                                                  105.

               Tess scoffs

                                   TESS
Fat chance of that. After all,
*why* isn't Turik barging in here
to subdue us, if he wants us
working with the army so bad?

                                   LIZ
                         Because maybe Max, Michael, and
Isabel would be nearly useless to
his cause if he pulled something
                         like that.

                                   TESS
                         I think there's something else -
there's a code that he lives by,
that he won't break. Allowing any
of us to get captured because he
was making this power play is
                         definitely against the code. When
the chips are down, he'd risk his
life to save us from imprisonment.
                             (She takes a deep breath.)
And if he does, I'll go with him.

               Liz starts. Max nods unhappily.

                                   MAX
I... I expected that you might take
                         something like that tack, Tess.
But... but I really do want you to
come back to Earth with us - and
not just because you could help us
out of this jam... or some of the
                         tight spots that we're probably
going to get into back in Roswell,
with aliens hunting us down there
                         too.

                                   TESS
                         Okay, then what's the bigger
                         reason?

Max hesitates, trying to put his thoughts into words. He
stands up and puts his hand on Tess' wrist.

                                   MAX
Tess, the four of us, we're more
than just four half-breed orphans -
as long as we stay together.
                                                                  106.

Our shared origin is something that
nobody else in the galaxy can
claim, probably - and that makes us
                         connected. It, well, as
                         insufferably corny as this sounds,
                         it makes us all family.
                             (He pauses.)
And... and I don't want to be light
years away from one of my sisters.

Tess absorbs that, moved but trying to hide it. She turns to
               Liz.

                                   TESS
And what do you have to say?

                                   LIZ
                         I... I don't have any more problems
with you, Tess. I want you to come
back... and I hope that we can
learn some way to actually be
                         friends, instead of just people
                         connected in the same social
                         circle.

Tess walks over to Liz, pulls her gently out of her chair,
               and hugs her.

                                   TESS
                         Okay, guess that that's that.
Should I go out and find Turik
                         right away??

               Liz checks her watch

                                   LIZ
No, it hasn't been that long since
we came in. Better to wait a bit.

                                   MAX
We still need to work out just what
                         you should tell him.

                                   TESS
Oh, yeah, right, that might help
                             (She thwacks the side of
                              her own head playfully.)
And maybe go up to check on any
news that Kivar's on the hunt
                         already.

The three of them leave together, as we once again segue
               into...
                                                                  107.

SONG MONTAGE - THE THRILLING HEROICS VERSION

Actually, the song probably started overlapping the end of
last scene. Gotta go with Megan Metcalf's "The Marrow and the
Bone" for this one, even though it's probably going to be
hard to figure out who has the rights to it now.

Again, some mixing and matching and going back and forth will
be worked out later, but the following main elements:

               Guards slowly shuffling around outside

Rayde watching the guards from inside a grove of trees far
               away.

Alex and Isabel sitting together in the upstairs parlour -
Alex holding her hands as she concentrates.

Distorted images of Isabel and Rayde trying to touch each
other as a huge storm blows through the sitting room - this
               is imagery from Isabel's powers.

Michael and Maria peer out an upstairs window that looks over
the back yard, the guards, and the ship - taking care that
the guards don't notice them there. Creep back to another
room, the guys' room, where they start arguing animatedly and
drawing various schematics (think Wile E Coyote's road runner
plans) that we can't really see.

Max, Liz, and Tess talking in another bedroom, and using some
sort of alien computer or similar equipment to access a news
               network.

Chajicka in the sitting room, talking to an Antarian over the
videophone - maybe a thin circlet crown on his head or
               something like that.

Big special effect shot, zooming out of the mansion, showing
the ship and the rebel guards surrounding it, Rayde's trees,
then expanding to show the alien countryside that it's set
               within.

Transition to a far-distant room, where a figure shrouded in
black looks at a satellite picture of that same countryside
(not zoomed in close enough to show any detail of the house
               or the ship.)

               END OF MONTAGE.
                                                                  108.

               INT. PANTRY - AFTERNOON

This is the room between the cookery and the back door -
mostly filled with food supplies. Liz and Tess are waiting.
               Chajicka enters from pantry.

                                   TESS
What's the... oh, hey there. I
thought it was Max reporting back
                         in.

                                   CHAJICKA
No, though I do have something to
                         report. Managed to reach Prince
Vorjal and speak to him on your
behalf... he says that he will not
be moved, but I don't think that
they're as resolute as they seem.

                                   LIZ
Well, that could work out in our
favour for this plan. As long as we
can get it done in this time. The
news networks were full of rumors
and guesswork - it's hard to say
when Kivar might make his move.

Tess steps over to stroke Liz's arm in a friendly, reassuring
               way. (Or some other gesture.

                                   TESS
Don't worry. We're gonna have time.

               At this point, Max enters.

                                   MAX
Okay. Isabel thinks that she can
                         make contact anytime, but there's
somebody who's able to overhear her
mental powers among the guards, so
we'll have to work that into our
                         diversion somehow.

                                   LIZ
                         Maybe it's Turik himself who's
                         listening in?

                                   MAX
Izzie doesn't think so. Michael and
Maria are ready to go whenever.
                                                                  109.

                                   TESS
                         Okay, that's my cue then.

                                   MAX
                         Break a leg, or something.

Tess smiles at him, then exits to the outside. Max tries to
get a good view out the door, then steps over to hug Liz.

                                   LIZ
The waiting always gets to me.

                                   MAX
                         Yeah, I know.

               They wait for a while.

                                   MAX (CONT'D)
What do you want to do first once
we get home? I mean, assuming that
                         all the uncomfortable parent stuff
can either be put off, or dealt
with first and neither of us get
                         grounded again.

                                   LIZ
Hmm... not sure really. I mean, I
do want to get home, but this
really has been a fun holiday. I
can't think of anything in Roswell
                         that really compares.
                             (She sighs.)
I just don't want to live here yet.

                                   MAX
Yeah, I kinduv know what you mean.
There's no place like Oz, huh?

Liz shoots him a suprised look, then chuckles. Tess enters
               from outside.

                                   LIZ
                         How did it go?

                                   TESS
Great. We don't have much time,
though. Come on, let's give Isabel
                         and Alex the word.

                                   MAX
                         Okay.

They all leave, heading towards the cookery.
                                                                  110.

               INT. LANDING - AFTERNOON

Max and Liz hurry through. Tess takes a look back as she
               enters, and hesitates.

                                   TESS
Guys, wait a second. I lost my
                         locket from Ed.

Liz returns into shot, followed by Max.

                                   MAX
Do we have time to look for it now?

                                   LIZ
                         Tess - you weren't wearing a locket
today. Even before all of this
                         started...

                                   TESS
Well, I put it on this morning...

Max and Liz step closer to her. Suddenly guards appear from
two different doorways into the room, making a particular
               point of surrounding Max.

                                   MAX
                         Wait - what's going on?

Liz has figured it out and glares at Tess.

                                   LIZ
You - you found some way to play
the Judas anyway. You invited them
in, left the back door open. You
                         gave them the opportunity to...

                                   MAX
Michael won't let himself be caught
this easy, Tess. He'd fight - and
Turik won't want a fight started in
                         here...
                             (Something changes in his
                              voice as the scene goes
                              vague.)
Liz - come on, I think she's coming
                         back in.

                                   LIZ
                         Huh??
                                                                  111.

               INT. PANTRY - AFTERNOON

We're back where we were a scene and a half ago - Max hugging
               Liz, waiting on Tess.

                                   LIZ
Wow... I just had the most vivid
                         daydream...

                                   MAX
Tell me about it later, okay?

He kisses her. Tess enters, and Liz glares suspiciously at
               her.

                                   TESS
                         What? He bought it!

Liz continues to watch nervously as Tess closes the outside
               door.

                                   MAX
Okay, well, we've got a little
                         time, right?

Tess nods, heading up towards the other end of the room. Liz
crosses past her, engages a locking mechanism on the back
door, and peers out as if she's going to catch the guards
sneaking towards the mansion. They're just standing out
               there.

                                   LIZ
Okay, let's go make our break!

               INT. SITTING ROOM - AFTERNOON

Liz and Alex watch, as Isabel concentrates. In another weird
mental vision, we see Rayde dictating a complex series of
numbers and instructions to Isabel. (Specifics to follow.)
Back in the sitting room, Isabel scribbles furiously on a
               writing tablet.

Then her head snaps up a bit and her eyes open.

                                   ISABEL
                         I think I've got it!
                                                                  112.

INT. LIZ AND TESS' ROOM - AFTERNOON

This is where Michael and Maria were spying out on the back
yard from during the montage. Liz, Alex, and Isabel hurry in.

                                   LIZ
                         How're we doing?

                                   MICHAEL
                         I... I don't think that they've
taken the bait yet... oh, okay.
Yeah, looks like some of the guards
are moving around the front of the
                         building.
                             (Pause.)
Maybe half of them went. I think
that that's as much as we're gonna
                         get.

                                   MAX
                         Alright. Let's do this thing.

                                   LIZ
                         Bye, Chajicka.

She hugs the old lady goodbye, and nearly all the other kids
follow suit. Even Max kisses her, though he still looks a
little annoyed that Liz stepped on his cue.

                                   MAX
Okay, NOW are we ready to go?

                                   LIZ
Your own fault for not asking
                         before.

                                   MARIA
                         Yes, yes, let's just go!

In a semi-coordinated flurry of movement, they hurry across
the room. Tess and Isabel wave, using their powers, and the
window opens up wide. Michael and Max take their places at
each side of the window, concentrating, and a sort of shimmer
appears in the air between the window and the top of the
ship, which is around forty feet away and maybe six or seven
               feet down.

                                   LIZ
                         Geronimo!!
                                                                  113.

She belly-flops out of the window, and it becoems clear that
the shimmer is a sort of slide - it supports her weight and
she plunges down to tumble off onto the roof of the ship.
Tess follows her, and the two girls work together to find a
hatch in the roof - Tess uses her handprint to open this up
and they climb a ladder down inside.

All the other kids follow, Max and Michael going last, and
the slide disappearing once they are done.

               INT. SHIP - AFTERNOON

Isabel and Tess are at the controls this time, and once Max
and Michael take their seats, Isabel raises the ship maybe
eighteen feet into the air. Out the viewscreen, they can see
Turik coming back around the mansion, looking annoyed.

Tess pushes a button and speaks into a crystal, and we can
faintly hear an echo as something alien relays her voice
               outside.

                                   TESS
Sorry, Turik, but my place is back
on Earth - with my family. We're
still going to try to come back in
                         six Earth years.
                             (She hits the button
                              again, turning off the
                              outside speaker.)
                         Izzie - hit it!

Isabel starts operating controls, making the ship fly away
from the mansion and climb higher into the sky.

                                   ISABEL
Alex - I gave you the hyperspace
                         instructions, right? Start
                         programming this thing.

                                   ALEX
                         Gotit.

Alex pulls out a slip of paper from his pants and starts
adjusting controls - first near his seat, then reaching out
               towards Maria's console.

Max notices something familiar on a screen.

                                   MAX
Uh-oh. Once again, I think that
                         we've got another air vehicle
                         trying to intercept us.
                                                                  114.

Swing seventy degrees to the right,
                         Isabel, and all possible speed.

                                   ISABEL
Hey, watch it with the orders,
mister. You're not the king of
                         anybody!

But she does make evasive maneuvers as he suggested. Liz is
helping to program the hyperspace shunt now.

                                   MAX
                         He's faster than we are!

                                   TESS
Or she. You can't tell from a blip
                         on a screen.

                                   LIZ
Make yourself useful, Tess, and hit
                         the hyperspace button!

                                   TESS
It... it's not here anymore. Max -
how did you get it again?

                                   MAX
Umm... I, I said that we needed to
                         go somewhere else, didn't I?

                                   TESS
There's no place like home, there's
                         no place like home...

The button appears in front of her.

                                   TESS (CONT'D)
                         Wow. That actually works?

She hits the button. Plunge once again into the realm of
colored swirly stuff. Michael reaches out to take Maria's
               hand.

                                   MICHAEL
                         Kinduv pretty, isn't it?

Maria turns to Michael, not sure what to say to that. Fairly
quickly we're back out of it, and above a not-too-familiar
               desert.

                                   ISABEL
Did it work? How do we figure out
                         where we are??
                                                                  115.

               Liz giggles

                                   LIZ
Think about it, Isabel. This ship
is responsive to our wishes. What
                         else?

                                   ISABEL
Ohh... okay, ship - give me a
                         reading on the direction and
                         distance to Roswell, New Mexico.
                             (In a stage whisper.)
What if it doesn't understand that?

                                   TESS
                         Look.

There's a clear directional indicator on the console nearest
               to Isabel.

                                   ISABEL
Okay, what else... I'll start the
                         turn. Second request, ship -
analyze radar or any other air
                         traffic control systems and hide
                         from them.

                                   MAX
Sheesh, yeah, that's a good idea.

               INT. UNDERGROUND CAVES - NOON

A tour guide is leading a bunch of older people along a
carefully marked path. From a crack far away, Max pokes his
head out and is surprised by the light. (Artificial spotlight
               shining right at him?)

                                   TOUR GUIDE
And down this way is one of the
most remote and delicate caves in
all of Carlsbad... hey, what are
                         you doing in there??

Max hesitates and retreats back into the darkness. The tour
guide heads off after him, then thinks better of it and
               starts to radio security.

                                   TOUR GUIDE (CONT'D)
Hi, Dave? Yeah, we've got a few
                         trespassers down in the King's
                         chamber I think...
                                                                  116.

               EXT. BUS STOP - AFTERNOON

A greyhound pulls and the seven kids file on.

                                   MAX
How much for seven to Roswell?

                                   BUS DRIVER
Umm... a hundred and five. You kids
are a long way from the regular
                         caverns stop.

                                   LIZ
                         Yeah, I know. But still - we're
                         almost home.

Max pulls some bills out of his wallet - Isabel and Alex chip
in too. The bus driver produces tickets for all of them and
punches them. They find seats halfway down the bus as it
pulls back out onto the highway.

                                   LIZ (CONT'D)
So, Alex - what are you going to do
when we get back to Roswell?

               Alex looks over at Isabel.

                                   ALEX
Everything that I can think of.

The kids laugh at that and start to chatter, as we come to...
               THE END!
