I'm going to recommend something different: a prequel

The Shapeshifter Series by Kathy W narrates everything that happened from the moment the Shapeshifters left Antar all the way till the TV series ends. It's six books long, and although we don't see the podsters for quite a while, learning what happened before they even came into the picture is a blast. It's incredibly complex and deliciously intriguing. Even if we know where it all leads, knowing all the players that helped or chased the pod squad along the way is a blast!

As given by the author, SERIES SUMMARY: I’ve always been fascinated with what happened before the pod squad hatched, and I’ve had a million questions. Why don’t the hybrids remember more? Why was the Destiny Book in the library instead of in the pod chamber? Why did the Dupes wind up in a sewer in New York City? Why did both shapeshifters appear to abandon their charges after hiding them so well in the very beginning? Was Nasedo really working for the Skins? Why was Langley so unwilling to help Max? And so on and so forth.

This is the story from the viewpoint of the shapeshifters, my own little fantasy about what happened, why it happened, and what went wrong. This is the sixth and last book in the series, each a sequel to the others and which have closely tracked the show; my intention is not to rewrite Roswell, but to fill in some of the blanks. The story began on the ship headed to Earth and will end a few weeks after the last episode of the series.

The one fanfiction that I recommend is MOUTH by Jasper711. All I can say is that I nearly fainted while reading the story. (WOW! I'm still fanning my face)
