Part 11

“I’m a lawyer, I run Evans and Associates” Max answered Alex.

Alex nodded, he didn’t know the company but he had no doubt that it was probably a very respectable place.

“Cool so you and Liz must have a fair bit in common then”

“Yeah” Max smiled “we share a lot of interests as well” he added.

Max was a lawyer so he realised that Alex’s questioning was leading somewhere, he wasn’t sure where so he was being careful of what he said.

“Cool” Alex smiled.

“So Liz told me that her and Maria broke up” Max said.

Alex’s face fell slightly he was surprised that Liz told Max about her and Maria. Liz had a tendency to keep her private life private, most people would call it hiding in the closet but Liz was adamant that people didn’t need to know her business.

“Really?”

“Yeah which is why I’m kind of surprised that she’s here” he said bluntly.

“Oh well we’re all best friends but I think you’ll find that those two will be back together in no time. Maria just needs to swallow her pride and apologise which is what I’m sure they’re doing now” Alex smiled confidently.

Max however didn’t smile, could it be possible that after a night of having sex with him that she would reunite with her ex lover because that would be a complete blow to his pride. Sure they hadn’t talked about continuing what they had started between them the night before but Max was pretty sure that Liz wouldn’t be satisfied going back into a female relationship.

“What were you doing with Max?” Maria frowned.

“He took me out to lunch” she told her, Liz didn’t see the point in lying but leaving a few of the details out didn’t hurt.

“Oh” she said taking a seat on the desk.

“Well I wanted to talk to you” Maria told her getting back to the subject at hand, her and Liz and getting back on track.

Liz pulled a nice red shirt out of her wardrobe which she thought Max would like along with a slinky black skirt. She made her way to her underwear draw then and searched for a nice black set to go with her outfit. She wasn’t sure why she was paying so much attention to her outfit and picking things that she thought Max would like and she didn’t have time to analyse it right now.

“Liz are you listening to me?” Maria frowned annoyed that Liz hadn’t even turned to look at her since she had started talking let alone respond to the conversation.

Looking up “No not really” Liz answered truthfully “I’m trying to get ready” she added before walking straight past Maria and into the bathroom where she hoped she wouldn’t follow.

Luck wasn’t working in her favour today though.

“Liz this is important” Maria told her.

“No Maria it’s not” Liz replied adjusting the water temperature.

Maria’s mouth fell open in shock “we can talk later” she added “right now I want to take a quick shower”

Liz waited for Maria to leave so she could get undressed, truth was Liz was still pissed with Maria. She knew she was trying to apologise but right now Liz didn’t know if she wanted her to. The past 24 hours had been some kind of crazy wonderful for her and she wasn’t ready for the fairytale to end. Which meant she wasn’t ready to deal with Maria or real life.

It was selfish, she realised that but for once in her life she was going to put herself first.

Being dismissed by Maria the way she had been, after how long they had been together had ripped her to the core. It had also opened a world of possibilities to her that she hadn’t considered before and she didn’t think her best friend and ex lover would like to hear about that.

“Maria could you excuse me?” Liz finally said.

“What!” Maria said shocked.

“Can you leave so I can have a shower” she said.

Maria laughed she couldn’t believe what she was hearing “your kidding, I’ve seen you naked thousands of times Liz, god I’ve licked your pussy”

Liz however didn’t find that amusing and she frowned “Well that was when we were together” she snapped.

“Are you saying we aren’t together now?” Maria asked shocked, she realised that she still needed to apologise and that she had things to make up for but she had thought that by leaving a message and coming here tonight was a way of extending an olive branch, now it sounded as though Liz saying she wasn’t going to accept it..

“That’s the impression I got from our last conversation” Liz replied. “I mean did you or did you not tell me that if I didn’t move into your apartment that we were over?” she reindered her of her words.

“Liz” Maria said taking a step forward, she wanted to explain that yes she had said it but that she now regretted pressuring her.

“Please get out” Liz said then turning away, she couldn’t stand to see the sadness or apology in Maria’s eyes. She didn’t want to feel bad for what she had done with Max because the truth was she had loved every minute of it.

Maria nodded “Ok but this conversation isn’t over just because your choosing to avoid it, Liz” she told her.

Liz rolled her eyes “Shut the door on your way out” she told her pointedly.

Maria stomped down the stairs like a five year old and fell on the couch next to Alex. She wanted to cry but right now she was into much shock at what had gone down with Liz right now for the tears to fall.

“Where’s Liz?” Alex asked he could already tell by the look on her face that things with Liz hadn’t gone the way she had hoped they would.

“Showering” she answered.

She looked over and noticed Max then and wondered again why he was here when lunch must have been over hours ago

“Where’s Isabel?” she asked him.

“Away I believe” Max answered.

Maria arched an eyebrow “Really? Then why are you still here?” she asked bluntly.

“Maria” Alex hissed.

Max however smirked, he was seeing Maria’s jealous side and he was intrigued about what Liz had said that had brought it out.

“You know this and that” he shrugged.

“So how do you know Liz?” Maria asked.

Max quirked an eyebrow “I thought that would be obvious” he said.

Maria stared at him, studying his facial expressions “I realise it would be through Isabel initially but I’m interested to know how you became friends? You know the type of friends that have lunch? Because Liz has never mentioned you before”

Before Max could answer Liz came breezing into the room looking absolutely stunning, Max had to look twice to make sure she wasn’t glowing.

“Ok I’m ready” she announced “Where are we going?” she asked.

“Um I thought you’d have a suggestion since you live here” Alex scratched his ear.

Unconsciously moving to Max’s side Liz looked up at him “Max?” she said.

“Um well depending on what you like but there’s a great Thai place not to far from here” he said.

“Sounds great” Liz agreed.

“I’m in. I love Thai” Alex grinned.

“Well I hate Thai” Maria added glaring at Max. She didn’t like how close Liz was standing next to him or the way his hand had moved to her lower back. It was stupid she knew that, Liz was attracted to guys she was involved with her but it irked her all the same.

Liz frowned “Don’t be stupid Maria you love Thai” she said.

Alex looked between his best friends with a concerned frowned, there was a tension in the air all of a sudden and he didn’t know why.

“I can drive, my cars out the front?” Max suggested then breaking the challenging stare going on between Liz and Maria.

Liz smiled up at him “that would be great” she said and lead the way to the door. At first Maria didn’t follow she just stood there wondering who and what had taken over Liz Parker.

“What’s going on with her?” she whispered to Alex as they began following behind.

Alex shrugged she seemed fine to him.

When they reached the Thai restaurant it was fairly crowded but they were seated without having to wait.

When they reached the table Max held out Liz’s chair for her and she smiled both oblivious to the surprised looks from Alex and Maria.

“This place is great, Max” Liz told him.

“Yeah” Alex agreed as he hungrily looked over the menu.

Silence descended their table until a waiter came to take their orders.

“So Alex” Liz swallowed nervously, it was harder than she thought to be at a table with Maria and Max. Max had the added advantage that he knew what was going on Maria however didn’t. “Why didn’t you tell us you were coming?” she asked.

Alex scratched his ear “It was kind of last minute actually” he admitted exchanging a look with Maria.

Liz watched Alex look at Maria and then back at her and knew instantly why Alex was here. Maria had called him about their break up and he like the great best friend he was had come running.

“Well I’m glad” she told him. “I’ll have to see if I can get some time off work to spend with you” she said then.

“Or you could just take a few more sickies” Maria said without looking up from her menu.

Liz had never had a sickie in her life. The only time she had ever taken sick leave at work was when she had been genuinely sick so she knew what Maria was getting at.

“So Maria” Max said “What do you do?” he asked.

Him and Liz hadn’t really talked about her the night before but he was interested in the type of person Liz dated in the past.

Maria was surprised by the question and wondered why Max was interested, she wasn’t very trusting of men considering her history with them. No man in her life had ever done right by her, or stuck around. Alex was the only one she could trust .

“Oh I work in a music shop and I give lessons” she told him.

Max nodded “Sounds fun” he said.

“Do you play anything?” Maria asked him.

Max shook his head.

“So Max do you have a girlfriend?” Maria asked him. She hadn’t noticed a ring on his finger or the mention of a significant other but one could hope. She wished she knew what it was about this man that brought out her jealous side it wasn’t like he had really done anything to cause it.

Liz almost spat out the mouthful of water when Maria asked Max that.

“No” Max smiled “single at the moment” he added.

“Well a great looking successful guy like you should have no problem finding a girlfriend, I’m sure you have women throwing themselves at you all the time, right?” she laughed.

Max could hear the underlying message from her statement, it screamed leave my women alone.

Max nodded “just looking for the right one” he said casting a sidewards glance at Liz which didn’t go unnoticed by Alex or Maria.

Part 12

The car was quiet on the drive back to Liz’s apartment.

Max was wondering what would happen when he pulled up and Liz got out of his car, would he see her again, would she want to see him again? Or would she like Alex had suggested get back with Maria now that she had experienced heterosexual sex.

Liz was having similar feelings, she didn’t know how to broach the subject of seeing Max again with Maria and Alex in the car or if he would even want to, maybe he wanted it to just be a one night thing and that was all. Also, she knew that she had to sit down and talk to Maria. Avoiding the issue was not going to make it go away, it was easy to before because in reality Liz didn’t really know what she wanted. Did she want to be with Maria still or was it really over for her?.

Maria wondered if Liz was actually going to talk to her when they got back to the apartment as well. Dinner was ok, Maria couldn’t put her finger on it but there was something about Max that she just didn’t like. It bothered her the way he had subtly touched Liz all through dinner, everyone seemed oblivious to it though except her but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Max felt more than friendly towards her Liz.

“Thanks for the ride and dinner, Max” Alex smiled as he and Maria got out of the car when Max pulled up “It was nice meeting you” he added then. All in all Max was a pretty cool guy he thought and he couldn’t see why him and Liz had so much in common.

“Yeah” Maria threw in but Max wasn’t fooled he knew that he hadn’t earned himself another fan, apparently Maria Deluca was the one female in the world that was immune to his charms.

“You too, maybe we’ll see each other again before you leave” he told Alex, leaning over Liz so he could see her.

Liz shivered at his close proximity “you smell good” she whispered surprising both of them.

Max looked at her and grinned “You too”

Maria and Alex didn’t budge from their spot on the footpath as they waited for Liz too follow suit and exit Max’s car, Liz looked awkwardly between them and Max, when she realised they weren’t going to budge she knew she would just have to say goodbye with them there.

“So thanks for coming” she said with a shy smile.

“My pleasure it was fun” he told her.

Liz nodded “I better let you go, you still have a twenty minute drive”

“Yeah” he regretfully agreed, it was the one bad thing about living outside the city.

“Ok well goodnight” she smiled.

Liz picked up her purse and was about to move out of the car when Max’s hand on her arm stopped her.

“Can I call you?” he asked lowly.

Liz smiled “That would be nice” she told him and finally got out of the car.

The ride in the elevator up to her apartment was quiet. Alex was thinking about the interaction he had witnessed between his best friend and Max and for the first time he actually had doubts that Liz and Max were just friends. He had tried to ignore the subtle and touches and looks they exchanged that screamed intimacy to him.

Liz let them into the apartment and placed her bag down “coffee?” she asked.

Alex nodded “Yeah but I’ll get it” he told Liz.

Liz smiled at him in thanks but when he was gone she sighed she knew what Alex was doing and she knew she should be thankful but she wasn’t. She was scared as hell about her conversation with Maria.

“So Max is nice” Maria said taking a seat on the lounge.

“Yeah he is” Liz agreed her hands fidgeting nervously as she tried to work up the courage to finally talk to Maria about their relationship.

“Maria” she started “I’m sorry that I brushed you off earlier but I wasn’t prepared to see you and talk to you” she admitted.

Maria nodded “Ok” she said, she could understand that especially since she had done the same thing to Liz the first few days after the fight.

“I guess I kind of deserved it” she smiled “but I did come waving my white flag”

Liz nodded “I know that” she sighed “the thing is I wasn’t ready to hear what you were going to say” she said.

“Why?” Maria asked.

“Because you were trying to say you were sorry and I know you think it’s going to make everything ok” Liz finally looked up at her best friend tears filling her eyes “and I’m afraid that when I tell you it’s not your not going to be my best friend any longer and that scares me”

Maria’s mouth fell open in shock and then closed again, what was Liz saying. She licked her suddenly very dry lips before responding. “What are you saying?”

Liz wiped her eyes on her hands “I love you, I do but I’ve come to realise that I’m not in love with you like someone in a relationship should be” she whispered.

“I-I” Maria started to say but instead of words tears began to fall down her face.

Liz immediately moved to her side and wrapped her arm around her friend, she knew it was selfish, she was ending their five year relationship but she didn’t want to loose her best friend.

“W-when?” Maria finally asked.

Liz looked at her confused not too sure what she was asking “I mean when did things change?” she asked.

“I don’t know” Liz replied honestly “I think we changed gradually and instead of changing our relationship with it we’ve kind of just stayed the same”

“But you just don’t fall out of love with someone suddenly, Liz. There must have been something or some point where you realised?” she cried. In all the scenarios that had run through her head when she finally got to talk to Liz never did she imagine this. She couldn’t believe that the women she loved was telling her that somewhere along the way she had fallen out of love with her, and worst of all how had she not noticed.

Deep down Maria knew she did, it was why she had started fighting Liz so hard for them to move in together, she thought that if they spent more time together they would be happy again.

Liz dropped her head, there were a thousand if you wanted to break apart every thought she had “I guess it was when I realised I wanted something more, something else”

“’what do you mean?” Maria asked. “I mean was it the fighting over where we were going to live? Because you know I can change, I can move here”

Liz shook her head “No sweetie that’s not it” she replied “that was just what we continued to focus on, it’s what brought all of this to a head” she told her.

“Still, it doesn’t change how I feel” Maria told her.

“And how do you feel, Maria? because it’s been a very long time since we’ve talked about it” she said trying to remain clam and talk rationally.

“I love you, I always have and I always will” she said.

“yeah I know” Liz said “but do you love me as Liz your best friend since birth or do you love me as your partner and lover?” Liz asked.

“I don’t see the difference” Maria cried.

“See that’s the thing Maria, there is” she whispered “and I need and want to feel that so badly” she admitted.

The room became quiet then as both girls thought about the reality of the moment.

Maria stood up and walked to the coffee table where there was a box of tissues and retrieved some.

“I never expected this” Maria admitted then “I thought I would apologise and it would all go away” she said tearily.

Liz lowered her head “it was always going to rear its ugly head over and over again until we ended up hating each other and I couldn’t bare that Ria. You have been my best friend and my rock for my entire life and I don’t know what I would do if I lost you completely”

“I don’t know if I remember what it’s like to be just your friend, Liz”

“I know it’s been a while Maria but can we please try?” she begged.

“and there’s no chance that we can work things out?” she asked.

Liz slowly shook her head, she hated what she was doing, She was breaking Maria’s heart and because it was her doing it she couldn’t even be there as her best friend to give her a shoulder to cry on.

“I didn’t realise before how many things I want in life that I’ll never be able to have” she admitted then.

“What do you mean?” Maria asked shocked and little curious.

“I mean don’t you want kids Maria?” Liz whispered passionately.

Maria’s mouth fell open in shock was that what all this was about, seeing what Maria was thinking Liz immediately interrupted her before she could speak. “I mean I want to get married, Maria and I wanted to know what it felt like to be with a man and I want to know what it feels like to be loved by a man” she told her.

Maria swallowed the lump in her throat “so what your saying is that you don’t think your gay?”

Liz looked up and met her best friends eyes “I don’t think I was ever gay, I think if I hadn’t fallen for you that I would never have pursued a bi-sexual relationship”

Maria sat down shocked, “But I mean you seemed to have wanted to be me with me” she stuttered out.

“Oh Maria I did, please don’t even doubt that, it meant so much to me but I want something else now sweetie and I’m so sorry that I’m hurting you because that is the last thing I ever wanted to do but I have to be selfish because if I don’t I’ll break” she cried.

Liz couldn’t bare the thought of Maria thinking that what they had wasn’t real because it was and when it had been good it had been great but it just wasn’t what Liz wanted or needed for the rest of her life.

Maria dried her eyes “It’s going to take me sometime” she admitted.

Liz nodded in understanding, she would give all the time she needed. “ok” she whispered.

Alex walked into the room then, he had heard Maria’s voice raise a few times and had stayed in the kitchen as long as he could. He sensed that things were dying down so brought the girls their coffee.

“Here you go ladies” he said placing their coffee’s in the table in between them.

“Thanks Alex” they both whispered.

Alex looked between their tear stained eyes “so I take it it’s the end?” he whispered.

Liz nodded sadly “not of our friendship just of our relationship” she told him.

“good, I mean it’s good that you’re still going to try to be friends” he said. He had no idea what he would do if his two girls weren’t friends anymore. They were the two most important people in his life They were the two most important people in his life and they were the three musketeers they needed to stick together.

“Do you two want to stay the night?” Liz asked then “We could watch a movie and stuff ourselves with ice cream” she suggested, she didn’t want them to go just yet.

Maria nodded tearily, she was sad, very sad but the thought of loosing Liz completely kept her from fleeing, she had to have her in her life in some capacity.

“Ok you guys choose the movie and I’ll grab supplies” Liz told them wanting to give Maria a few minute alone to talk to Alex.

“Sounds good Liz” Alex smiled.

Maybe, just maybe things would be ok after all he thought.

Part 13

It had been more than a week since Liz’s date with Max and break up with Maria and Liz was feeling down.

Alex had been doing his best to spend as much time with Liz as he was with Maria but it was hard with Liz’s work hours. Maria was still talking to Liz but she had needed some space to recover from their break up, it was harder because she knew it was permanent this time and that she couldn’t give Liz what she wanted. So Liz was doing her best to give Maria the space that she wanted but she was finding herself very lonely.

Adding to her depression was the fact that so far Max hadn’t called. It wasn’t like she had really expected him to but she had hoped that maybe he had felt a little more for her than just lust and desire like she had for him.

Luckily Isabel had returned from her work assignment the day before, she was only supposed to be gone a few days but the job had been bigger than expected and had to stay the week. It was great to have her other best friend and room mate back, and to have someone to talk to who didn’t judge her or have concerns for the other party.

“So it’s all over?” Isabel wasn’t surprised, she had thought as much when the little tiff had lasted longer than usual.

Liz nodded, she had just finished telling Isabel everything. About her date with Max to the awkward dinner with Max, Maria and Alex. Isabel had thought it was terribly funny and wished that she had been there for it.

“So are you ok?” Isabel asked.

Liz smiled weakly “Truth was it’s been over for me for a while, I’m sad that I hurt her though but she’s agreed that she still wants to be friends so hopefully I wont loose her completely” she told her.

“So then if you’re ok, what’s with the mood?” Isabel could read Liz a mile away and her friend had been down since her return so it was obvious that if the break up with Maria wasn’t bothering her that something else was.

“He didn’t call” she sighed.

Isabel was confused for a second but then it clicked that she was talking about Max and she smiled “so it went that well?” she asked.

“I already told you it did I was just sparing you details because I didn’t think you wanted to know how great your brother is in bed as well as out of it” Liz teased.

“Eeew Liz” she whined “I’m glad he pleased you and everything but I don’t want to know about it”

“and I’m not going to tell you” Liz said.

Isabel watched her friend then, it was obvious that Liz liked Max, that in itself didn’t surprise Isabel but she had thought Liz understood the deal with Max and was sorry that she had hooked her friend up with him now because it was obvious she would end up hurt.

“Liz, Max doesn’t really do relationships……” she started to explain.

“don’t worry Isabel I know, he told me all about it” she said. “He just asked could he call me and I guess I was kind of hoping he wasn’t just being polite” she sighed.

“I know some other guys I could introduce you too” Isabel began to suggest.

Liz quickly shook her head “No thank you Isabel but it’s fine” she assured her.

Realising then how late it was and that she had to work the next day Liz said goodnight to Isabel then and headed to bed.

The next day Max was sitting in his office trying to focus on the case he was working on but his mind kept wandering to Liz and his eyes kept moving to the phone. It had been over a week since had seen her and he wanted to call her so badly but he didn’t know if he should.

Did he want to start a relationship? And if he did, did he have the time?

Shaking his head and tried to go back to the case in front of him but five minutes later he threw his pen down when he realised it was pointless.

Pressing his intercom “Margaret can you get me Liz Parkers office over at Matheson and Tate on the phone please” he requested.

“Right away Mr Evans” she replied.

Seconds later she told him that the call had been put through and Max hit the speak phone just in time to hear the secretary answer.

“Good morning Matheson and Tate, Jennifer speaking” she replied friendly.

“good morning Jennifer it’s Max Evans is Liz available please?”

“Just one moment Mr Evans and I’ll put you through”

Liz’s morning had been the opposite of Max’s she had made the decision that morning to stop wasting her time thinking about Max and get to work. She had already had several appointments which doubled her work load for the next three months.

“Liz I have a Max Evans on line 1 for you” Jennifer informed her over the intercom.

Liz stared mouth open at the phone before finally answering “Thanks Jen” she said.

She took a deep breath before hitting the speak phone “Liz Parker” she said coolly.

Max smiled and leaned back in his chair when he heard his voice “I don’t think you’re supposed to sound that sexy at work” he found himself saying.

Liz smiled at his comment and felt herself blush “I don’t know, my clients seem to like it” she responded.

“I can see why” he said.

Liz laughed “Well this is a surprise” she finally said.

“I know” he sighed “I’ve been wanting to call you sooner” he admitted.

Liz put her pen down “hmm well I’m pretty sure my phone’s been working”

“I know” he cringed “so let me make it up to you” he suggested then.

“what do you have in mind?” she asked her voice becoming sexy as she imagined a few of the things that she would like him to do to make it up to her.

Max was having similar thoughts but shook them out of his head, he pulled up his calendar then to see how his afternoon looked “let me take you to lunch?” he asked.

He had two hours free from one o’clock.

Liz pulled her own calendar up and check to see if she was free, she had a two o’clock appointment but she could easily have Jennifer push it back.

“Sure how about one?” she suggested.

“Perfect, I’ll pick you up” he told her.

“Downstairs?” she asked.

“No I’ll come up” he smiled.

“Ok well I’ll see you then” she replied.

“Bye Liz” he said before hanging up.

He smiled and looked at the clock, he still had over an hour and that was plenty of time to knock off the work in front of him he thought.

The next hour and a half flew by for Liz and before she knew it Jennifer was on the intercom telling her that Max Evans was here for her.

“Send him in” she requested.

She stood up from her desk and began straightening her short red shirt as Max walked through the door. He smiled at her before he allowed his eyes to travel up her body.

“Hi” she smiled.

Her hair was flowing and she didn’t have her suit jacket on, just the black lace top she wore under it and Max thought she had never looked sexier.

Michael was already there when the group arrived at the bowling alley.

“So how are we going to do this?” Isabel asked after they all got their shoes and moved to their assigned lane.

They got on with the game then and in the end it was Michael and Maria who came out on top.

“So where do want to go to dinner?” Isabel asked the group as they made their way out of the alley and towards the parked cars.
