Chapter 10


The next day, Michael and Liz were packing. They were going to go to California. Tess, had not come home the entire night, which only meant one thing, she was at Max’s. That was a good thing, Tess would try and stop them. With, her gone they could just leave a note and leave. But, Liz felt bad, she wanted to take her best friend but, then again, she’d get into trouble with the principle. So, that was out of the question.

Michael knocked on Liz’s door and waited for an answer, “Hey, Liz it’s me. You ready?”

Liz looked around for anything else she needed. She looked in her suit case and saw about four pairs of pants, seven shirts, three pair of shoes, plus the ones she was wearing, about four pairs of socks, nine pairs of underwear, three bras, a bathing suit, and a baggy filled with her tooth brush, tooth paste, hair brush, and bands for her hair. Yes, she was ready.

“Yeah.” She said and zipped up her suit case. She went and opened the door and saw Michael there waiting. They both went and took a Snapple out of the frig to bring along for the bus ride and then walked out the door, leaving a post-it on it saying:

Dear,
Tess

Don’t be scared, Michael and I
just went for a little vaca.
I wanted to bring you, but didn’t
because I didn’t want you to get
into trouble with the princ.
I will call you once we’ve gotten
to where we’re going.

Love you,
Liz, oh and Michael.


Liz looked out of the window from inside the bus. This was it, she was leaving. ‘But, hey it’s not like forever.’ She thought to herself. The bus started moving and she grabbed Michael’s hand. He brought her hand to his mouth and kissed it. She smiled and he smiled back. And they sat there in peace as the bus took off to California.

Max walked Tess to her door. It was a school day, but they skipped. Tess put the key in the key hole and then noticed the post-it on the door. She took it off and read it aloud.

“Wow, they left?” Max said surprised that Liz, of all people would just up and leave.

Tess smiled, “She needed a break and she’s finally taking one.” Tess laughed and entered the apartment, where her and Max sat down and watched TV.

The bus hit Flagstaff, Arizona and stopped for the night. It stayed at a Motel 6, which wasn’t, too bad. Liz and Michael shared a room. They were happy that the bus company took care of the pay, because, with buying their tickets they only had about $400 and they needed that for when they got to wear they were going.

Liz was sleeping on the bed, Michael said he’s take the couch. Liz was in a deep sleep.

She was running away from her bedroom. She had just been through it, again. She never wanted to be touched by that man, ever. But, she mother didn’t give a flying shit about her so, she let it happen. Every time he needed to get off and her mother didn’t work, he’d go for her and she was tired of it.

She got to the door opening it but, she was, too late. He took a hold of her and brought her back, dragging her in the room. He threw her on the bed and then started hitting her when she yelled.

“Ahh...” Liz yelled sitting up in the bed, “No....no.....no!” She started rocking back and forth. Michael ran to her and held her, calming her down.

“Shhh, it’s alright, baby. I’m here. I won’t let him hurt you ever again.” He said knowingly.

Michael laid with Liz the rest of the night. He didn’t go back to sleep, he just sat there and watched her. Making sure she’d be ok.

“I love you, Liz.” He said to the sleeping girl in his arms.

Chapter 11


They were on the bus again and crossing the state line. ‘California, here we come.’ Liz thought to herself. The bus was going to stop in a town called Bakersfield and from there they would get onto another bus to San Luis Obispo. They just got out of a town called Needles. ‘Funny name for a town,’ Liz thought.

They were in the desert on a two way road. Liz looked at every car that passed and was amazed that they didn’t hit them. She swore that they were only two inches away from hitting them. Finally, after looking at dozens of cars, sleep hit Liz and she dozed off.

Michael looked over at her. He smiled, ‘How can someone be so beautiful while sleeping?’ He asked himself in thought. He turned back to the book he was reading, ‘Witch Child’ Liz had let him borrow it. He thought about the character, Mary. In some ways he could compare himself to her, like how he was always running away, not literally running away, like on foot, but in his mind he was always running away. Michael put the book back in his bag and decided that he would, also take a nap.

“I wonder if they reached California, yet?” Tess asked sitting under her and Liz’s tree.

Max laughed, “She said she’d call, ok. She’s fine, she has Michael.” Max said giving her a hug.

Tess took in the hug and smiled up at him, “I love you, Max.” She said.

“I love you, too Tess.” Said Max kissing the top on her head.

Michael could feel someone shoving him. His eyes blinked open and he saw the bus driver looking at him.

“Son, the bus has stopped. You’re in Bakersfield, now. You have to get off the bus, sorry.” The bus driver said.

“Ned, it’s all right. Just let me wake her up.” Michael said rubbing his eyes and turning towards Liz. He shook her gently. “Liz....Liz, it’s time to go....Liz?”

Liz shot up making Michael and Ned the Bus driver jump.

“Hey, it’s alright. We’ve reached Bakersfield. It’s time to go.” Michael said and saw her nod her head. She picked up her back pack and stood up. They walked off the bus and Ned handed them their suit cases.

“Thanks.” They both told Ned.

“No problem, kids.” He said smiling and closing the bus door, driving off in the direction of New Mexico.

Liz yawned and stretched her arms out. She looked around and saw the Motel 6 and the bus station next to it. She felt Michael grabbed her hand. She looked up at him.

“Come on.” He said pulling her in the direction of Motel, “Lets get some sleep.”

“But.... but, we. Just. Slept.” Liz stammered.

“Well, I’m still tired.” Michael said stopping and looking at her, “Plus, we need our sleep so we can wake up in the morning and get on the next bus.

Liz thought for a moment. She nodded her head, “Ok.” She said.

They were kissing in her living room. She pulled back.

“Why don’t we go to California, I mean we could make a new..” Max cut her off.

“Tess, you can go if you want, but I can’t I still have a Mom and Dad....I still have a....a....” Max tried to think.

“A family?” Tess said. Max nodded his head.

“Yes, I have a family. You, Liz and Michael....Well, you don’t and....”

“Excuse me!” Tess raised her voice, “ I don’t have a family! What do you call this.” She said picking up a picture of her, Liz and Michael. “What does that look like to you!?! This is my family, Max! Mine! I may not have a mom or a dad, but I have sister and brother! Or at least that’s what we call each other, haven’t you been paying any attention. I do have a family! And you know what? Maybe I need to go be with them in California.” She said going to the front door and opening it, “Good bye, Max.” She said looking away.

Max was shocked. He sure did screw it up. God, why couldn’t he keep his trap shut. He stood up and walked over to her, “Is this how you want to leave it?” He asked, standing outside, in front of her.

She looked at him....and slammed the door.

Liz laid their in Michael’s arms. She felt safe. Safer than she’s ever been. She felt happy and that was good. She looked at him and saw eyes pierce into hers. She smiled as he brought her into a good night kiss.

Chapter: 11


Michael and Liz were on the next bus, heading for San Luis Obispo. The new bus driver called out and said that they only had ten minutes until they’d reached their destination. Liz was asleep she had her ear-phones on that was hooked up to her disc-man and Michael could hear the music blaring and wondered how she could sleep. He listened more carefully and found out she was listening to Papa Roach. He smiled, ‘Nice choice, not Metallica, but nice choice.’ He thought to himself bobbing his head with the music. He didn’t even know he started singing along.

I tear my heart open
I sew myself shut
My weakness is that I care too much
Our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

Michael stopped as he bobbed his head with the music more. Pretending he was playing the drums with his hands against his legs. Lip singing to a verse before chiming in.

I can’t help you fix yourself
But at least I can say I tried
I’m sorry but I got to move on with my own life

When Michael was finished he was applauded by the several people in the bus. He sunk into his seat, embarrassment sweeping over him as his cheeks started to blush.

Moments later the bus stopped and Michael woke Liz up. Once they stepped off the bus a man walked up to them.

“Hey, what’s your name, man?” The guys asked. He didn’t look like a hit man or anything dangerous. He had Reddish-brown hair and a goatee to match. He was probably 25. He wore baggy pants and a maroon polo shirt with some vans. He had on some sun glasses that had red lenses and a black rim.

“Michael and you are?” Michael said pulling Liz to his side, just in case. Liz felt the same way, so she put her arm around Michael’s waist.

“Oh, yeah. Sorry, It’s Brandon.” He said giving out a hand, which Michael shook. “I heard you on the bus. See, I work, well, own a bar, club, whatever and my last dude got fired because he was caught with drugs, just got back from seeing him in rehab. Anyway, I was wondering if you want the job?”

“A Singing.....Job.” Michael couldn’t help but, let out a small laugh. Liz started smiling.

“I’ve heard you sing before Michael, your great.” Liz said beaming.

“I don’t know, I’ll have to think about it.” Michael said.

“No worries, here.”Said Brandon giving Michael a card, “My home phone and the bar’s number is on there. The address to the bar, as well.”

“Thank.” Michael said taking the card. Brandon nodded and walked away.

Michael was smiling, he thought the whole thing was funny. When, he turned around he saw Liz’s face with a frown. Then, she hit him on the shoulder.

“Ow, what was that for?” Michael said rubbing his shoulder.

“Hello, we’re starting anew and you were just offered a job. I mean, you don’t throw away an opportunity.” Liz said crossing her arms across her chest.

Michael sighed, “Ok, lets go find this place.”He said putting his arm around Liz’s shoulder and walking towards a street.

The phone rang all day. She unplugged her phone and she still heard the ringing. She was sitting on her couch watching a episode of General Hospital. Sky was pregnant with Lorenzo’s child, but she loved Luke, who was married to Traci. Then there was Courtney, who died giving birth, and never got to tell everyone who the real father of her baby was, which it was Nicholas’s, but Jax thought the baby would be in danger with Nicholas, so Jax threw away Courtney’s wishes and declared the baby his. And know Carley knows and doesn’t know if she should side with the so called, man she loves or tell Nicholas the truth.

Tess clicked to another channel. “That show is way, too dramatic.” She said with a half smile. Her half smile became a frown when there was a knock on her door.

Tess clicked the TV off and walked over to the door opening it to find a bouquet of purple roses in front of her. She immediately smiled as she took in their sent. Then, she smiled as she knew who was behind the bouquet. Max always brought them to her when she was upset with him. She grabbed the bouquet and walked into the Kitchen, leaving the door open for max to come in. Tess was filling a vase with water. She put the flowers in it and then spun on her feet and into Max’s arms taking each other in a deep kiss. Max picked her up and walked towards the bedroom.

Michael and Liz walked up to the bar called ‘Carmels’. Michael went to open the door when it didn’t open. Liz look up and saw the closed sign.

“Closed. Maybe we can wait.” Liz said looking up at Michael.

“Or I can just open it for you.” Said a voice from behind.

Michael and Liz turned around and saw that Brandon guy there with some keys in his hand. “Here let me get this place open. So, we can talk.” Brandon said opening the bar. He let Michael and Liz walk in before him, just being nice.

Brandon slid behind the bar, “So how old are you guys.” Brandon asked.

Liz could see that Michael was about to say Seventeen and sixteen. “I’m 21 and Michael’s 22.” Liz said getting there before him. He looked at her like, ‘Do you know what you just did.’ Liz just smiled as he stared.

“Great. That’s Great. So, you’ll be singing and bartending if that’s alright.”

“Thats...Thats just fine.” Michael said still staring at Liz.

Liz walked up to the bar and sat on a stool. Michael following her. “Um..Do you know of any place that I could work at?” Liz asked.

Brandon smiled, “Well, we could always use another hand at the bar.”

Liz smiled, “Good because we’re going to need the money, oh and how much do you pay.”


“$7.50 an hour plus tip.” He said getting out some shot glasses and pouring some whiskey into them handing Liz and Michael each one.

“Wow, really.” Liz said in amazement at the pay. It was good. Liz downed the shot and slammed the shot glass down on the bar like a pro. Michael looked at her never seeing her drink or act like this. He smiled, ‘I like it’ He thought to himself and downed his shot.
