Here I am as promised (even though I am apparently supposed to completing the census tonight instead - I'm stuck on the question of religion since the government has announced they will not accept 'Jedi' as a recognised religion this year).

I hope this was worth the wait :D I can already hear the 'it's about time!''s coming from the audience in the first half of this chapter.

Thank you everyone for the huge amount of feedback (and lengthy analytical review of Maria's character!!) Hopefully this part will keep you relatively happy (although I'm trying very hard to not let your comments influence her character - not that I'm completely sure where I am going with her yet).

Thanks too for your well wishes. I promise I wasn't fishing for it by telling you about my dramas (just trying to give a good enough excuse to get you all off my back! ) Results are back tomorrow so cross your fingers!

Liz’s eyes slowly fluttered open and she gradually focussed on her surroundings. She was still in Max’s living room, curled up on a big armchair wrapped up in a blanket. She had no idea how long she had been there, but Isabel and Max were nowhere in sight, and all the fan mail had been picked up off the floor and put away.

As Liz got to her feet and lifted her arms above her head for a stretch, her attention was drawn to the sound of dishes banging in the kitchen. Slowly making her way over and poking her head through the door, she saw Max pulling something out of the oven, and swearing because he had burnt himself on the hot pan.

“Ouch!” He said, dropping the ban onto the kitchen bench and shaking his hand.

“Let me have a look at that.” Liz said, pulling him over to the sink and running the cold water.

“Hey sleepyhead.” Max smiled at her, completely oblivious to the pain now that her hands were touching his.

“Hi.” Liz blushed, now suddenly conscious that she probably should have checked her reflection in the mirror when she woke up to make sure she looked presentable. “How long did I sleep for?”

“A couple of hours.” Max smiled. What he didn’t tell her was that for most of that time he had sat and watched her.

“I’m sorry.” Liz apologised. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you. I hope I wasn’t an imposition.”

“Never.” Max replied, honestly.

“So what are you doing in here anyway?” Liz asked, turning off the cold water, and turning back to where Max had dropped the pan on the bench.

“I was cooking you dinner.” Max replied, following Liz over to his attempt at making lasagne.

“You were making me dinner?” Liz asked incredulously.

“Yeah. Why? Didn’t you think I could cook?” Max asked, feigning offence.

“No, it’s not that.” Liz replied looking him in the eyes. “It’s just that no one has ever cooked for me before.”

“Serious?” Max asked shocked. “Never? What about Serena?”

“Serena doesn’t cook – unless grilled cheese sandwiches count.”

“Former boyfriends?”

“I guess it comes with the job description. People just assume I’ll do the cooking.” Liz explained, not flat out acknowledging whether there had been any former boyfriends or not, and wondering if Max would notice the omission.

“Well, then I don’t feel so nervous about letting you try my cooking then. You haven’t got a lot to compare it too.” Max smiled. “How about you go and freshen up, and I’ll finish up here.”

“Okay, where can I …” Liz began to ask. She couldn’t quite remember where the bathrooms were in this place.

“You can use my ensuite.” Max offered, leading her to his bedroom and indicating to the door on the right.

Max left the room and Liz walked into the ensuite to check her hair. She quickly wet her hands and ran them through her hair, attempting to flatten down the strands that had been standing on end, and feeling embarrassed that Max had seen her hair like that. After she had freshened up, she couldn’t resist poking through Max’s things. Coming across his aftershave, she unscrewed the bottle and inhaled deeply.

“Dinner’s ready.” Max said from the doorway, startling Liz, causing her to drop the bottle of aftershave all over the vanity.

“Oh … um … oops.” Liz said, blushing profusely. She was so embarrassed at being caught looking through his things.

“It’s no problem.” Max said, helping her clean it up, and not able to wipe the grin off his face at catching her smelling his aftershave.

“Here.” He said, dabbing some aftershave gently behind her ear. “Now it will smell like I’m around you for the rest of the night.”

Liz playfully smacked him on the arm as she led the way out of the ensuite, but was secretly glad that Max had placed his aftershave on her, as though he was branding her as his. She didn’t want to ever wash it off.

“So this looks good.” Liz said sitting down to the table where Max had dished out the lasagne and a garden salad. Max poured her a glass of red wine before taking a seat himself.

“Hopefully it tastes better than it looks.” Max replied, referring to where the lasagne had fallen apart because he had thrown it down on the kitchen bench when had had burnt his hand.

“Mmmm … it does.” Liz replied after she had tasted her first mouthful. “I’ll have to get the recipe off you to use at the restaurant.”

“Now you’re making me blush.” Max replied. “But, it’s an old family recipe, and if I gave it to you, my mother would kill me.”

“Well, she already doesn’t like me. We can’t give her another reason not to, can we? Especially after those photos this morning.” Liz replied, remembering the horrible front page spread for the first time since waking up.

“Don’t worry, my mother doesn’t read the tabloids.” Max smiled. “I think you’ll be safe from her wrath this time.”

* * * * *

After dinner, and the delicious dessert Max had also whipped up, Max offered to walk Liz home.

“So where did Isabel go tonight?” Liz asked, making conversation to distract herself from the fact that Max was holding her hand.

“She went to visit our parents. She’s going back in for more chemo tomorrow, so I think she wanted to get out of the house while she still felt up to it. She also mentioned something about making herself scarce.” Max replied.

“Oh.” Liz replied, blushing. Isabel had hinted more than once about her and Max, and obviously Max had picked up on it too.

“So.” Max said, once they had reached Liz’s front door.

“So.” Liz replied, equally eloquently.

“I had a good time tonight.” Max said, tucking a strand of Liz’s hair behind her ear, before leaning in to smell the skin behind her ear.

“Yep. Still smells like me.” Max said huskily, looking into Liz’s eyes, his lips millimetres from hers.

“Max?” Liz breathed.

“Yeah?”

“Kiss me.” Liz replied.

Max didn’t need any more encouragement than that, and his lips immediately met Liz’s in a kiss that started off slow and gentle, but gradually built up in forcefulness from the pent up emotions coming from either side.

“I’ve wanted to do that for so long.” Max panted when they finally pulled apart.

“Me too.” Liz admitted. Why had they taken so long to get to this point?

“So. Do you think that maybe I could take you out sometime?” Max asked shyly, as though they were still in high school and he was asking out his first girlfriend on a date.

“I’d really like that.” Liz replied, feeling as though she was bursting out of her skin.

“So … I’ll call you.” Max said, taking a step away, but still holding Liz’s hand.

“Okay.” Liz said, focussing on the Max’s fingers laced through hers. Feeling uncharacteristically confident, she pulled him back towards her and stole another kiss.

“Mmmm.” Max moaned, as their lips parted, but he let his forehead rest on hers.

“Would you like me to walk you home?” Liz offered, not wanting to say goodnight just yet.

“But then I’d have to walk you right back again.” Max smiled at the offer. “You’d better get inside before Serena sends out a search party for you.”

“Okay.” Liz agreed reluctantly, knowing he was right. “I’ll see you soon?”

“You can count on it.” Max promised before turning to walk down the street.

* * * * *

When Liz walked into her apartment, she was not able to wipe away her smile, until Serena appeared in front of her with a not-so-happy look on her face.

“What?” Liz asked, trying to recall if she had done something wrong. Had she promised to be home for dinner? Had Serena been starving, waiting for Liz to pick up some thai?

“She’s gotta go.” Serena hissed, trying to speak quietly, but obviously upset.

“What did Maria do?” Liz asked, knowing Maria was the only person that could upset Serena so much that she had failed to comment on Liz’s late night, and the grin on her face. Usually nothing would stop Serena from having some smart comment about her and Max on the tip of her tongue.

“She has been sitting in front of that television all day. The living room is a mess and she’s left all her dishes in the sink as though I’m her housemaid. All I want to do is relax in my own home, but she’s taken over. I want her out.” Serena demanded.

“Okay. Let me handle this.” Liz replied, knowing Serena had every right to be upset. This was her apartment, and she had the right to feel comfortable in her own home.

Liz walked over to where Maria was sitting on the couch, completely absorbed by the television.

“Maria?” Liz said tentatively, when Maria hadn’t even noticed that Liz had sat down next to her on the sofa.

“Oh, Liz. You wouldn’t believe this. They’re showing different episodes of ‘Friends’ on at least 10 different stations. Look at this – Ross and Rachel are together…” Maria said, flicking to one station. “… and now they’ve broken up…” She said, flicking to another station. “… together – apart – together – apart...”

“Okay …” Liz said slowly, attempting to pry the remote from Maria’s hand.

“Oh, and they’re up to season three of ‘One Tree Hill’! Channel 10 cut it half way through the 1st season, but now I’ll finally get to see what happens between Lucas and Peyton… And don’t even get me started on ‘Days of Our Lives’.”

“Maria. You need to snap out of it.” Liz said, finally able to get control over the remote, and switching off the television.

As the television screen went black, Maria was able to drag her attention from the screen to where Liz was sitting next to her.

“I’m sorry Liz.” Maria apologised, finally realising that she had spent the entire day in front of the television. “It’s just they have so many channels … We only get five stations in Australia. Here they have hundreds! How do these people find time to do anything?”

“My point exactly.” Serena piped up from the kitchen. Liz just turned and gave Serena a warning look.

“Maria. We need to talk.” Liz said seriously.

“What’s up?” Maria asked, completely oblivious that anything was wrong.

“What are you planning to do now that you’re here in LA?” Liz asked.

“I don’t know … I thought I’d check the place out, hang out with you. Catch up on lost time. Why?”

“How long will you be here for?” Liz prodded.

“Is that your way of asking when I’ll be leaving?” Maria replied offended.

“No, of course not. It’s just that this is Serena’s apartment too, and it’s a little small for three people.”

“You’re kicking me out?”

“Yes, take the hint.” Serena called out from the kitchen.

“Serena!” Liz admonished, and then turned to where Maria looked as though she was going to cry.

“Maria. It’s not that I want you to leave, it’s just … we don’t have enough room for a permanent house guest.”

“Where would I go?”

“Maybe you could go to the university and find someone looking for a housemate?” Liz suggested.

“But I don’t have much money. How could I afford it?” Maria asked.

“Getajob.” Serena not-so-discreetly coughed.

“I’m sure Amy could find you a waitressing job at the restaurant until you organised some paid gigs.” Liz suggested, referring to Maria’s dream to launch her career.

“But if I moved out, I’d hardly see you. I’ve only just found you, and now you want me to go away again?”

“Of course I don’t. There’s no reason we wouldn’t see each other any more. We just wouldn’t necessarily see each other here. Serena could get her sofa back.”

“I’m sorry for overstaying my welcome.” Maria replied, turning to apologise to Serena. Serena looked suddenly uncomfortable having Maria acknowledge that she was now aware of Serena’s desire for her to leave.

“So, tomorrow, come with me to meet Amy, and then I’ll help you find a place to stay.” Liz offered.

“Okay. That would be great. Thanks Liz.” Maria smiled. “But perhaps, we should find a place without cable tv.” Maria suggested.

“Good idea.” Liz smiled, relieved that ‘the talk’ had gone so well.
"Do you see what we’ve done?
We’ve gone and made such fools of ourselves..."

Hey everyone! I'm here with my dose of Ozus Fictus Newbius for you all. Make sure you only take as directed, and consult your doctor if pain persists.

Sorry about the delay, but I was suffering from Ozus non internetus. Unfortunately I'm still suffering, and have had to resort to dial-up :x . Hopefully it will be rectified soon (otherwise the nice people at the telephone company will be getting a serve of Ozus verius upsetius - and believe me, they don't want that!).

Thanks again everyone for letting me know how much you miss my fic. Hopefully we will be back on track with weekly updates from now on. Although now that I'm living in Brisvegas (Brisbane, Queensland for the uninitiated), I may be called to spend my days in the pool or down the beach instead.

Anyway, on with the show...

“Hey.” Liz said, watching Sean come out of the house and take Maria’s place next to her on the rug.

“Hey yourself.” Sean replied, taking a swig of his beer.

“So, did you hear the news?” Liz asked, pouring herself another glass of champagne.

“What’s that? They’ve invented beer flavoured nipples?” Sean replied, cracking open another can of beer.

“No.” Liz laughed, used to that kind of response from Sean. “Maria and I got accepted into the courses we applied for. We are officially no longer high school students.”

“Wow… So all grown up ‘ey Lizzie.” Sean replied, looking Liz up and down.

“You’d better believe it.” Liz replied, before laying back down on the rug to stare at the stars. “I’m going to be famous one day you know.”

“What for?” Sean asked, laying down next to her. “I’ve heard you sing, so I know it can’t be that.”

“Gee thanks. No, for my cooking. I’m going to be a famous chef and people are going to be lining up around the block for my food. The restaurant will be booked up for months in advance.”

“I still remember when you tried to make Maria and me toasted cheese sandwiches and we ended up having to call the fire brigade.”

“I was nine...” Liz said, lightly punching Sean, “and besides, I’ve had a lot more practice since then.”

“Oh yeah?” Sean replied, quickly jumping up and straddling Liz, pinning her down while he tickled her.

“Sean, stop.” Liz giggled, trying to stop Sean from tickling her.

“What if I don’t?” Sean replied, still tickling her.

“I’ll tell Maria that you were the one who scratched her Jennifer Lopez CD last week.”

“You wouldn’t dare.” Sean replied, no longer tickling Liz.

“Wanna bet? Maria!” Liz called, just to stir Sean up.

“She can’t hear you.” Sean replied.

“Why not?” Liz replied. Maria was supposed to be just inside in the kitchen.

“Because she’s on the phone to Billy. You know how she gets when she starts talking.”

“Well, since I still managed to get you to stop tickling me, then I guess I don’t have to tell her now anyway.” Liz replied, sitting up to push Sean off of her.

“Where are you going?” Sean asked, pushing Liz back down.

“To get some more champagne.” Liz replied, attempting to sit back up again.

“Your glass is still full.” Sean replied, pushing Liz back down again.

“Well, then, I’m going to check on Maria.” Liz replied, a little more forcefully this time. She didn’t like feeling so powerless.

“She’ll be busy on the phone for a while. Why don’t you want to stay here with me?” Sean demanded.

“Because you’re beginning to scare me.” Liz replied honestly.

“I haven’t done anything to you.” Sean replied, getting angry.

“Then why won’t you let me go?” Liz asked.

“Because I want to spend time with you, and you’re trying to leave.”

“I promise I won’t go anywhere, just please get off of me.” Liz promised.

“I don’t believe you. You never could see me as anything other than Maria’s brother. You never came over just to see me.” Sean said, pinning Liz’s arms down next to her side. “You could never see how good we could be together.”

“I … never … I…” Liz stuttered, completely shocked at what Sean was saying. He had never indicated anything like this ever before.

“Well, I’m taking what you owe me…” Sean breathed in Liz’s ear, before restraining her while he undid her jeans.

“No!” Liz tried to scream for help, but he slapped her so hard that she was scared at what might happen if she tried it again. She tried to push him off of her with all of her strength, but she was no match for him.

“Stop, please!” She begged, in the seconds before she felt him thrust inside her. She screamed in agony as he broke through and began pounding into her. By now the tears were rolling down her face. She wanted to scream but her voice refused to make a sound. She tried to think of something else, anything else, that could take her away from this awful place.

When he was done, Liz was drawn back to realty by the smell of his ragged breath near her face.

“You tell anyone about this – the police, your parents, Maria … and you die … Maria dies … got it?” Sean asked, millimetres from Liz’s face.

Liz tried to speak, but all she could do was nod.

“Oh, and by the way… you were so not worth the wait.” Sean said, before getting up from her and doing up his pants. “Now clean yourself up before Maria comes out.”

Liz quickly pulled up her jeans as she watched Sean disappear down the side of the house. She thought of his semen on her body, on her underwear, and promptly threw up in the garden. She couldn’t let Maria see her like this. She couldn’t tell anyone. She knew Sean had a reputation for violence, but he had always been so nice to her, that she had never believed the rumours. Now she wondered if he really was capable of going through with his threat. She couldn’t risk it. Instead, she grabbed her backpack, and headed out the side gate and down the driveway. As she reached the road, her walk turned into a run. She ran until her legs couldn’t take anymore. She ran until she found it hard to breathe. She ran until she knew exactly what she had to do. She had to leave everything she loved behind.

Liz woke with a start, breathing frantically like she had just run a marathon.

“Liz? Are you alright?” Maria asked. She had heard Liz having a bad dream, and had come in again to comfort her.

“No. I’m not… I dreamt about that night…” Liz said, before breaking into sobs.

Maria immediately pulled Liz into a hug and rubbed her back soothingly. She knew there was nothing she could say, she just had to let Liz cry it all out. This wasn’t the first time she had woken to Liz having a nightmare, but it was the first time Liz had actually remembered what she had been dreaming. This was also possibly the first time that Liz had relived that night in a very long time.

“I thought I had been able to forget it and move on with my life. Why can’t I be free of him?” Liz asked wiping the tears from her eyes.

“Because he took something from you that you can never get back.” Maria replied.

“My virginity.” Liz replied.

“Yes, there’s that, but he also stole your innocence; your trust; your family and friends; and your ability to have a normal relationship with another man.”

“I haven’t told Max yet.” Liz admitted. Was it possible that she and Max could actually have a normal relationship? What would Max say when he found out that she was damaged – that she wasn’t worth the wait?

“I need to take a shower.” Liz said, bolting from the room.

As Liz undressed for the shower, she glanced at herself in the mirror. She didn’t see a beautiful woman staring back at her, instead she felt dirty and scarred. Standing under the spray, she scrubbed her body ten times over, wanting to rid herself of that night, of Sean and everything he did to her. But it didn’t work, nothing worked, and the stains remained. Eventually she conceded defeat and sank to the floor, letting the water blend in with her tears.

“Liz?” Serena’s voice came from the door. “If you don’t get out of that shower soon they’re going to have to introduce level 4 water restrictions. Plus, you’re going to be late for work.”

Serena stood and waited for a moment until she heard the shower turn off and the screen door open.

“Is she okay?” Serena asked Maria, who had given up hoping for a chance to shower before leaving the house that day, and had appeared from Liz’s bedroom dressed for work.

“Not really.” Maria replied vaguely. She really didn’t know how much Serena knew, and how much Liz wanted Serena to know.

Serena didn’t want to push, so instead she asked “Is there anything I can do?”

“I don’t think there is much any of us can do. She just needs to work through some things on her own.” Maria replied, just as Liz appeared from the bathroom, and then quickly disappeared again into her bedroom.

Serena nodded, before leaving the room to fetch the morning paper from the front step.

“Liz? Did you order coffee this morning?” Serena called out on re-entering the living room.

“No.” Liz called out from her bedroom where she was putting the finishing touches on her hair.

“That’s funny. There’s a guy here with a cappuccino that has your name on it.”

Liz opened the door to her bedroom to find Max standing in the kitchen with a tray of coffees.

“Morning.” Max smiled. “Thought I’d bring all you lovely ladies a morning kick-start.”

“Lifesaver.” Serena replied, taking a coffee out of the tray. “Mmmm Espresso, just the way I like it.”

“Thanks Max.” Liz smiled, reaching for a coffee, before Max moved the tray behind his back, out of her reach.

“Pay the toll.” Max said, indicating to his lips. Liz hesitated for a moment, wondering if Max would be able to taste the sadness and guilt on her lips, before giving him a quick kiss and reaching around his back for her coffee.

As she turned around after taking a sip, she noticed Serena and Maria’s dumbfounded expressions on their faces.

“What?” Liz asked.

“Liz … Is there something you forgot to tell us last night?” Serena asked.

“Um … well, yeah, maxandIkindofhookedup.” Liz blurted.

“Well it’s about bloody time.” Serena replied, before digging through her purse for a twenty dollar note and handing it to Maria. “We had a bet going, and it seems I lost.”

“What was the bet?” Liz asked hesitantly.

“How long it would be until you both got over yourselves and admitted your feelings for each other. I said it would be at least another month. Maria bet that it would be within the week.”

“I can’t believe you guys …” Liz said disbelievingly. Serena wanted Maria out of the house one minute, and the next they were taking bets on her love life?

“I can’t believe you. Not telling us this had happened…” Serena admonished.

“You were a little preoccupied last night.” Liz reminded her.

“That’s still no excuse.” Serena replied. “I want details.”

“Can you wait until I’ve left?” Max smiled, not really wanting to know what they would say about him.

“Can we wait until after work?” Liz added. “Maria and I are running late.”

“Oh, There’s a coffee here for you too Maria.” Max said, handing the last coffee in the tray to Maria.

“Thanks. Do I have to pay the toll too?” Maria joked.

“No.” Both Liz and Max replied at the same time, before smiling at each other.

“So I’ll see you after work?” Max asked Liz, as he began to head for the door with Liz following him down the hallway.

“Maria and I are going apartment hunting, but maybe after that?”

“Okay. Give me a call when you’re done.” Max replied, leaning his body into Liz’s so that her back was up against the wall. He tenderly stroked her face before leaning in for another kiss. Liz’s body stiffened immediately, protesting about being cornered. She immediately stepped out into the middle of the hallway, as Max spun around in confusion.

“Are you okay?” Max asked concerned. “Did I do something wrong?”

“No. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Liz replied. “I’m just running really late.”

Max wasn’t convinced, but was too scared to ask the question that was on the tip of his tongue – whether she was having second thoughts. He really didn’t want to jinx the answer. So instead, he pretended to believe her when she said nothing was wrong.

“Okay. Sorry to keep you. I’ll talk to you later.” Max replied, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead before opening the door.

“See you later ladies.” Max called to Serena and Maria, as Liz bustled him out of the door.

“Okay Liz, you have got some serious explaining to do.” Serena said, as Liz returned to the kitchen.

“Really have to go. Late for work.” Liz replied between sips of her coffee, as she grabbed her bag and house keys.

“Don’t think you can get out of it that easily Liz Parker.” Serena called as Liz was closing the front door behind herself and Maria.

* * * * *

“Maria, Amy, Amy, Maria.” Liz did the introductions. “Maria is an old friend of mine from Australia, and I thought she would be perfect for the waitress position you have been trying to fill.”

“Good. Done. You’re hired.” Amy replied.

“Is that it? Don’t you want to at least check my references?” Maria asked astonished.

“I did. Liz recommends you, and I trust her judgement. I don’t need to know anything more.” Amy said, grabbing a spare apron and notepad. “We open for breakfast in ten minutes. Why don’t you use that time to familiarise yourself with the menu, and then I’ll get Samantha to show you around when she gets here.”

“Thanks Amy. I really appreciate it.” Maria said, tying the apron around her waist.

“No problem. If you have any questions let me know.”

“Will do.” Maria promised.

“Great. Well, I’ll leave you to it.” Amy replied, before heading off towards the office to do the books.

“Thanks so much for this Liz.” Maria said. “I really appreciate you putting in a good word for me.”

“You won’t be thanking me during the dinner rush.” Liz smiled, before heading back to the kitchen to get ready.

Halfway through the breakfast shift, Amy casually walked into the kitchen and made herself comfortable opposite where Liz was cooking.

“How’s she doing?” Liz asked, worried by the look of shock on Amy’s face.

“That girl of yours …” Amy began, “… has managed to convince Big Al to try the low-fat healthy-choice breakfast instead of his usual plate of greasy bacon and sausages… She’s been able to convince the majority of customers to try a glass of freshly squeezed juice instead of the non-profit-making bottomless cup of coffee… she even managed to get a large tip out of Stingy Larry. She’s a miracle worker.”

“I told you she’d be perfect. Just wait until the dinner shift – she can talk a starving model into a three course dinner. You’re bottom-line will never look so good.” Liz promised, relieved that Maria was doing well.

“Not just mine … Big Al’s too.” Amy smiled.

Early in the afternoon, Liz and Maria found themselves at the student bulletin board at the Los Angeles University, scanning the advertisements for students looking for housemates.

“What about this one… ‘Studious female seeks like-minded housemate’…”

“Me studious? I don’t think so. Besides, I don’t think she would appreciate my late night song writing.”

“Okay, what about … ‘Senior seeks outgoing, fun roommate’...” Liz began.

“That sounds okay.”

“… BYO keg.”

“Maybe not.” Maria screwed up her face at the thought of drunk uni students in her apartment every weekend. “There’s got to be something here…”

“Hey lovely ladies.” A voice came from behind them. “You wouldn’t be looking for an apartment would you?”

Liz and Maria slowly turned around, expecting to turn down whoever was making a bad attempt at picking them up. Instead they saw a lanky looking guy, about there age, holding a fistful of posters.

“Hi, I’m Alex.” He said, holding out his free hand for them to shake.

“I’m Maria.” Maria introduced herself taking his hand. “And this here is Liz.”

“Nice to meet you.” Liz said, taking his hand.

“Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere?” Alex asked, looking at Liz.

“That’s probably because-umph.” Maria began, promptly getting a jab in the side from Liz.

“I’ve just got a familiar face. I tend to get that a lot.” Liz replied, while Maria rubbed her now-sore rib.

“Anyway, I couldn’t help but notice that you were looking on the bulletin board for an apartment. It just so happens that I know of a great opportunity.”

“Yeah, what’s that?” Maria asked dubiously, still unable to shake the thought of drunk uni students in her apartment and really not believing that this idea of Liz’s was that great after all.

“It just so happens that I came here to post these advertisements for my own housemate requirement.” Alex said, waving the posters he had in his hand. “I recently acquired an apartment off campus, after a little incident with the roommate I was allocated to on campus.”

“What kind of incident?” Maria asked.

“He snored. I couldn’t sleep. I had to resort to sleeping in the library and the occasional lecture. Anyway, now I have my own apartment but the rent is killing me, so I’ve been forced to take on a housemate. Interested?” Alex asked.

“Maybe. What’s the rent?” Maria asked.

“$100 per week and supply your own food. It’s got two bedrooms, 1 bathroom. Close to the uni. What else do you want to know?”

“It sounds good, but could we have a look at the place?” Liz asked, not wanting anything left to chance. It could be filled with rats or cockroaches for all she knew.

“Sure. Got time now?”

“Yes, perfect.” Liz replied, not wanting to rush Maria into moving out, but she had a good feeling about this guy.

“So what’s your major?” Maria asked, as they began the walk back to Alex’s apartment.

“Music.” Alex replied, “Much to my parent’s disappointment. They always wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer or something.”

“Yeah, mine too. I just finished my music degree in Australia.”

“Well that explains the accents. So are you taking some extra classes here?” Alex asked, assuming they were students.

“No. We’re not students. We just thought it would be a good place to look for cheap accommodation - struggling musician and all.”

“What do you play?” Alex asked, enthused at finding a like-minded potential housemate.

“Guitar and vocals. You?”

“Lead guitar mainly. I actually play in a band called ‘The Whits’. Maybe you’ve heard of us?”

“Uh … no.” Maria replied, looking at Liz for any indication that maybe she had heard of them. Liz just shrugged.

“Yeah, well, we just play exclusive gigs.” Alex replied, talking up the fact that they weren’t quite big enough yet to pull a big crowd.

“We’ll have to check your band out sometime.” Maria offered. “Liz here has some connections that might even be able to get you a bit of publicity.”

“Really? Wow. That would be great.” Alex replied excitedly.

“Yeah, I’ll get my people to talk to your people and we might be able to work something out.” Liz joked, while wondering whether Maria had been referring to Serena or Max.

“So this is it.” Alex said, opening the door to the apartment. “I’m sorry, it’s a little messy. I wasn’t expecting to have to show people through so early.”

“It looks fine.” Maria replied, not being a neat-freak herself.

“So there’s not much too it. You’re standing in the living room. Kitchen is just to your left, bedrooms and bathrooms are through to the right. Yours will be the second door on the left. Feel free to have a look around while I tidy up a little.” Alex said before beginning to pick up some of the takeaway wrappers and music sheets he had lying around.

Maria and Liz took the quick tour through the apartment. There wasn’t much to see, but it looked comfortable. Maria’s room had a fire escape out of her window which she thought would be nice to sit out on and write music on a warm summer night.

As they walked back into the lounge, they found Alex holding a pile of magazines.

“Ah huh! I knew I seen your face before!” Alex exclaimed, turning the magazine around to face Liz. “You’re Max Evans’ mystery girl!”

“Oh C’mon. That doesn’t even look like her.” Maria said, grabbing the magazine. “Besides, the photo is all blurry. That could be anybody. That could be my grandmother. Hang on – I think that is my grandmother!!”

Liz just gave Maria a look to suggest maybe that was taking it a little too far.

Alex looked at the photo again, almost convinced. “No … that’s definitely Liz. But that’s cool. You don’t have to admit it to lowly little old Alex.”

“Okay, okay… It’s me.” Liz replied, feeling guilty. Besides, she really didn’t mind admitting it to someone like Alex. She was really starting to like the guy.

“Cool. So you really know Max Evans huh? What’s he like in real life?” Alex asked.

“Everything you would imagine him to be.” Liz replied vaguely, blushing.

“So… do you think you could sign my magazine?” Alex asked, blushing himself.

“Sure.” Liz replied, as Alex handed her a pen.

“Okay, can we get back to the task at hand?” Maria asked, having made herself comfortable on the sofa. “So, do we have a deal or what?”

“Absolutely.” Alex replied, glancing at Liz one more time before joining Maria on the sofa. Maria couldn’t help but wonder what had been the clincher for him to say ‘yes’ to her as a roommate – the fact they were both into music, or the fact Liz knew Max Evans? Her doubts were soon put at rest when she and Alex started getting talking about music as Maria flicked through the pile of music sheets Alex had piled up.

“I think I’ll get going guys.” Liz said, happy that Maria had found a roommate so well suited to her.

“Yeah, see ya.” Maria replied distractedly. “I’ll grab my stuff later tonight.”

“See ya Liz.” Alex said, while jumping up to find a CD that Maria just had to listen to.

Liz just smiled, happy that Maria had found roommate so well suited to her, and that she would now be able to tell Serena that she could have her sofa back soon.

* * * * *

Liz stood nervously at Max’s front door. She hadn’t yet rung the bell, her finger hovering millimetres from the button. The one thing thought she couldn’t get out of her mind was that the last thing she should be doing right now was attempting to start a relationship with Max. Not just because he was Max Evans - mega movie star, but the same would have applied to any guy. She had never had a relationship, and had never resolved what had happened with Sean. Trying to try both at once could only head for disaster. And she didn’t want that. She didn’t want to risk losing what she could have with Max, just because of bad timing.

As she contemplated all the reasons she shouldn’t be standing on Max’s front porch at that moment, she saw the one thing that could make everything seem right. Max appeared in the doorway and he smiled down on her. The smile that could make her heart melt, and make her forget her scars.

Hey everyone! As promised, I'm here to update for the week.

Thanks for the bumps and best wishes. The hip's not feeling too bad at the moment, thanks.

Sorry if there are a lot of mistakes in this one, but I forgot to bring my glasses with me today and my eyes are a little strained from staring at the computer all day - so I'm posting it as is. (I'm just full of excuses lately aren't I ... if it's not the hip, it's the mother-in-law (who has now gone home BTW - yay!), now no glasses - is anyone else starting to get the impression that I'm actually 92 years old rather than ... um ... somewhere between 20 and 30).

Anyway, it's just a small part but I hope you enjoy...

“Hey. You’re here!” Max exclaimed, surprised to see Liz standing on his doorstep. He had just opened the door, on his way out, and had just been thinking about her. “I didn’t hear the bell ring.”

“That’s because I hadn’t rung it yet.” Liz said, her lip quivering.

“Are you okay?” Max asked immediately, reaching out for her.

“I am now.” Liz replied honestly.

“Come inside.” Max said, steering her through the front door, but not letting his arm drop from around her shoulder.

“Would you like some tea?” Max offered, after Liz had dropped her bag in the lounge room.

“I’d love some.” Liz replied, following him into the kitchen.

“How do you take it?” Max asked, realising that he would have to learn those types of details if they were going to be together. ‘If’ being the operative word after this morning. He wasn’t sure what he had done, but she had definitely been acting jumpy around him.

“Black, no sugar.” Liz replied.

“Just the way I like it too.” Max smiled.

They were silent again until the kettle had boiled, and Max had placed a cup of tea in front of Liz, after adding a little cold water so it wouldn’t burn her mouth when she took a sip.

“I do that too.” Liz said, giving a small smile, before blowing on her tea a little. “I hate having to wait for it to cool down before I can drink it.”

“Not the patient type, huh?” Max teased.

“I can be. About some things...” Liz said, he voice trailing off a little. She had been patient when it came to getting over what had happened to her. A little too patient… She had been patient about waiting for her turn to meet someone who could break through the walls she had built up around herself … to fall in love … for her first real kiss … She knew that she was going to have to keep up that theme a little longer …

“Max?” Liz said, breaking away from her thoughts to see Max looking at her quizzically.

“Yeah?” Max gulped. This sounded ominous.

“I need to ask you to do something for me.” Liz began, putting her tea down on the kitchen bench.

“Anything.” Max replied honestly. He would climb Mount Everest or swim with sharks if she asked him to. At this point he would do anything for her … except let her go.

“Will you be patient with me?” Liz asked. When Max didn’t reply immediately, she began talking a million miles an hour, nervous that she was just about to lose the best thing that had ever happened to her.

“It’s just, I’m trying to work through some things at the moment, and I’m not sure if I’m quite ready for a relationship, but I really, really like you and I want to see where this goes, but I don’t want to ruin any chance we have of making this work because I may freak out occasionally, and you may realise that I’m really not worth the effort.” Liz spilled out, taking a deep breath when she had finished, before daring to look up to see Max’s reaction.

Max was smiling.

“What’s so funny?” Liz asked. That wasn’t the reaction she was expecting from her little rant.

“Nothing’s funny.” Max replied, unable to wipe the grin off his face.

“Then what?”

“You said that you ‘really, really liked me’.” Max grinned.

“So.” Liz blushed.

“Nobody’s ever said that to me before.” Max replied.

“What are you talking about? You have girls through themselves at you every day.” Liz replied.

“Yeah, and they all tell me that they really like me – but no one has ever told me that the ‘really really’ like me.” Max teased. “I feel like I’m back in school and the girl next door has finally gotten up the courage to ask me out.”

“The girl next door huh?” Liz said, trying to change the subject so he wouldn’t notice how deep a shade of red her cheeks had become. “Whatever happened to her?”

“She broke my heart.” Max replied, seriously.

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that.” Liz replied.

“Yeah, a week later I found out that she was going out with Frank Demonte, just because he let her share his last Twinkie. Can you imagine that? Dumped at the age of 5 by an older woman.”

“How old was she?” Liz smiled, knowing that Max had almost had her with that story.

“Five and a half.”

“Well, I bet she’s regretting it now.” Liz replied.

“I’d like to think so.” Max smiled, but then his face turned serious, as he walked towards Liz. “But seriously… I’ll do anything that you ask of me. I’ll wait until the end of time if that’s what it takes. I know you’ve been going through something lately, and it’s okay if you don’t want to tell me what it is. I just want you to know that I’ll be here on the other side waiting for you, whenever you’re ready. And Liz? I really, really like you too.”

“Thank you Max.” Liz replied, as Max pulled her into a hug, not caring that her tears were spilling down her face.

“And you know what?” Max continued. “I already know that you are worth the effort. You are one of the most amazing people I have ever met, and I hope that you’ll keep me around even if it is just to watch in awe at the person you are.”

“Wow. You really know how to sweet talk a girl.” Liz smiled, wiping away her tears.

“And I didn’t even need a script.” Max smiled.

“So, we’ll take things slow…” Liz prompted.

“Baby steps.” Max agreed, giving her a kiss on the forehead.

“Okay. Baby steps.” Liz replied, feeling more at ease than when Max had found her at his front door.

“Hey? When you opened the door, you looked as if you were going somewhere?” Liz said, realising for the first time that he had been carrying his car keys when he had let her inside.

“I was on my way to see Isabel.” Max replied.

“Oh, Isabel! I forgot that she was having more Chemo today. How is she?” Liz asked, feeling terrible that she had been too caught up in her own problems to remember what Isabel was going through.

“She’s doing alright. I spent the morning with her, and I just came home to grab a few things to take back to her.”

“I’m sorry.” Liz apologised. “I didn’t mean to keep you …”

“Don’t be sorry. I’m glad you came.” Max smiled genuinely.

“Me too.” Liz replied honestly.

“But she’s probably wondering where I’ve gotten to, so I’d better run.” Max replied, grabbing his keys.

“Can I .. can I come with you?” Liz offered.

“Are you sure?” Max asked concerned. He knew what it was like to watch someone go through hell – he didn’t want to put Liz through that too.

“Positive.” Liz smiled.

“Okay, let’s go.” Max said, taking Liz’s hand and leading her out of the house.

As they drove to the hospital, in Max’s convertible sports car with the top down, Liz watched the scenery fly past and enjoyed the feeling of the wind in her hair. She felt free, and alive, and invigorated. Max loved the look of peace she had on her face at that moment. He wondered how long it would last.

“Izzy?” Max said, as he led Liz by the hand into Isabel’s room. “I’ve brought you a visitor.”

Isabel turned her head from where she had been watching the view out of her window, to face the door where she saw Max and Liz standing. She immediately smiled, and her smile grew larger when she saw Liz’s hand in her brother’s.

“I wondered what had been keeping you so long.” Isabel teased.

“Sorry, I got a little … distracted.” Max apologised.

“I bet you did.” Isabel smiled. “But you’re forgiven since you have brought Liz with you.”

“Are you sure it’s okay that I’m here?” Liz asked. “I don’t want to impose.”

“Of course it’s okay.” Isabel said, reaching out her hand for Liz’s. “Come and sit with me.”

Liz immediately took Isabel’s hand, and noticed how clammy it was.

“Are you okay?” Liz asked, wondering how Isabel could be so cheery, when she was obviously feeling so ill.

“I’ve been better.” Isabel admitted, her eyes losing their sparkle for a moment before she shook it off again. “Now that you’re here, you can help me keep my mind off of it. Max has been trying, but he’s no help when it comes to my crosswords.”

“Speaking of which. I’ve picked up a few more magazines for you.” Max said, passing a pile of magazines to Isabel. “And you owe me big time for making me go into a store and buy chick magazines.”

“Oh, don’t be a wuss.” Isabel teased, knowing that Max was only joking. “Besides, I’ve always known that you’re in touch with your feminine side.”

“The rest of the world doesn’t have to know that too.” Max smiled, used to Isabel’s teasing.

“Okay Liz. Quiz or crossword?” Isabel asked, flipping open the first magazine.

“Uh, what’s the quiz?” Liz replied.

“It’s entitled ‘Are you a goddess in the bedroom?’”

“In that case, let’s start with the crossword.” Liz quickly suggested, glancing up to see Max take a seat across the room from them, watching them both with a smirk on his face.

“Good choice.” Isabel replied. “Okay … One across … ‘Name the first American Idol winner.”

“Easy. Kelly Clarkson.” Liz replied. This was going to be a piece of cake.

“Okay … One down … ‘Name the actress that starred in the recent adaptation of Jane Austen’s renowned novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’’.”

“Kiera Knightly.” Liz replied without breaking a sweat. Isabel however, had beads gathering on her forehead. “Are you okay Isabel?”

“I’m fine.” Isabel smiled, although a little less brightly this time.

“Next … Three down … ‘What is the Tess Harding’s real name?’”. Isabel asked.

“Beatrice Hardolfo.” Max’s voice piped up from across the room.

“Are you serious?” Isabel asked.

“Deadly.”

“It does fit.” Isabel conceded, filling in the squares. “But how did you know that? I always thought ‘Tess Harding’ was her real name.”

“She got drunk one night after filming, and let it slip. I don’t think she even knows that I know, or that I was possibly the one who passed it on to a journalist one day…” Max grinned.

“You’re so cruel.” Isabel smiled. “But I don’t blame her for wanting to change her name. What were her parents thinking?”

“It’s an old family name apparently. I personally think it suits her.” Max said casually, picking up one of Isabel’s magazines to flick through.

“Okay, moving on. Six across …” Isabel began.

“Hi Isabel. How are you feeling?” The doctor asked as he walked into her room and checked her chart.

“Oh, you know. Piece of cake.” Isabel replied flippantly.

“Okay, well we are going to start on the next course in a few minutes. Do you want your friend to leave?” The doctor asked, referring to Liz.

“No.” Isabel replied, squeezing Liz’s hand. “She can stay.”

“Okay, well I’ll be back in a moment and we’ll get started.”

“Are you sure you want me here?” Liz asked Isabel hesitantly. “I could wait outside.”

“Don’t be silly. Of course I want you here. Besides, if you leave, who is my brother going to make goo-goo eyes at?” Isabel replied, batting her eyes in demonstration.

“Very funny.” Max said, playfully swatting Isabel with a pillow he had been leaning on.

“Oi, stop, I’m the sick one in this room, you’re not allowed to beat me up.” Isabel teased.

“Yeah, yeah. You’re going to milk this for all it’s worth aren’t you?” Max retorted.

“You’d better believe it.” Isabel smirked.

Liz sat back and watched the exchange. Max and Isabel were so close, and knew each other so well, that they could afford to tease each other in the midst of Isabel’s illness. They could afford to ignore the fact that Isabel was attempting to overcome a condition that could be potentially fatal. They acted like this was only a slight glitch in the overall master plan, and maybe they were right. And maybe, Liz’s own problems were only a small glitch in her journey, and she too was destined for greater things.

Okay LairaBehr4, don't get too excited. This isn't going to be a regular occurance. I just had a little time on my hands so I had a chance to write some more this week. So you can stop with the 'daily update' requests!! (but you know I love them anyway).

As always, thanks for all the feedback!!

This is just going to be light a fluffy (kind of like a meringue...)

“So, are we going to the club on Friday night?” Serena asked, before plonking herself down on the sofa next to Max and Liz, savouring the fact that she finally had her sofa back. She was half contemplating sleeping on it that night just to completely relish in the fact that it was now a Maria-free zone.

“I don’t know …” Liz hesitated, remembering all too well what had happened last time they had been there. She really didn’t want her face splashed across the tabloids again.

“Oh, come on Liz. You can’t hide forever. If you let those photographers rule your life, then they’ve already won.” Serena argued.

“She’s right, you know.” Max piped up.

“Besides, who am I going to go with if you don’t come and keep me company? Who’s going to help me make fun of all the teeny-bopper girls who think their hot stuff, and the guys who can’t dance but do anyway because they are drunk and think they are impressing the chicks?” Serena grinned.

“Sounds tempting …” Liz hesitated.

“I promise you it will be okay.” Max assured her.

“How?” Liz asked.

“Let’s just say I’ve got it covered. Trust me.” Max asked.

“Okay.” Liz smiled. She did trust him, or at least, she trusted that he believed that he could make it all okay.

* * * * *

So when Friday night came, it was with slight trepidation that Liz walked with Serena up to the doors of the club.

“Hey Tony.” Serena greeted the bouncer. “Where’s Mike?”

“Uh … he got a promotion.” Tony replied vaguely.

“Promotion huh? Good for him. See ya Tony.” Serena replied, leading Liz inside.

When they reached their usual spot on the balcony, they found Maria already waiting with Alex.

“Serena, this is Alex, Alex, this is Serena.” Liz introduced them.

“Nice to meet you.” Alex said, shaking her hand.

“Serena here is a journalist for the LA Times. She does the movie and music reviews.” Liz smiled, knowing full well that would get Alex’s attention.

“Really. Wow. Oh gosh, when Maria said that Liz was connected, I assumed she meant with Max Evans. Wow, you must have a lot of contacts in the music industry.” Alex began to babble.

“Yeah, I know a few people.” Serena smiled, secretly feeling a little good about herself that Alex referred to her as a ‘connection’, as though that gave her some validity. And a connection of the likes of Max Evans – that was just a bonus.

“Alex has a band called ‘The Whits’.” Liz explained.

“Yeah, any chance you’ve heard of us?” Alex asked.

“Uh … no.” Serena replied, now feeling deflated that Alex was just another struggling musician wanting to use her to get his big break.

“That’s okay. I didn’t think you would have.” Alex replied without taking any offence. “So are you here to see the band tonight?”

Liz ignored Serena’s silent plea for help, and just grinned as Alex began to monopolise Serena with questions about different bands she had seen or met, and how she goes about reviewing a band while respecting other peoples tastes in music.

“How’s the new apartment.” Liz asked, turning her attention to Maria. So far they had only seen each other at work, and even then they were a little too busy to catch up properly. She hoped Maria wasn’t feeling shunted out of the way already.

“It’s great. Sorry I haven’t seen you much this week. I’ve been hanging out with Alex and his band. They’re really good. They even said that I could sing a few songs with them at their next gig. Alex and I have been writing some music together too. Which reminds me, you and I should do some more song writing together sometime. I miss that.”

Liz began thinking of a time back before she left, when she and Maria would spend hours writing songs together. With Maria on guitar and Liz on piano, they would come up with tunes and then try and put words to them. They were so sure they were going to be the next ‘big thing’. Well, Maria was sure and Liz just went along for the ride. Then Liz started getting interested in cooking, and they began to write together less and less.

“Yeah, I miss that too.” Liz agreed, snapping back to the present. “But I’m glad you’re getting on so well with Alex. He seems really nice.”

“Yeah, he is. My next big task though is to get him a girlfriend. That guy really needs to get laid. And I figure it shouldn’t be too hard a task. He’s sweet and funny, and seems like the kind of guy who would treat a girl like she was the only person in his universe.” Maria started scheming.

“Not your type then.” Liz smiled. She knew of Maria’s tendency to fall for guys who would treat her badly.

“Very funny… but you’re so right. Besides, I’ve already got my eye on someone.” Maria admitted.

“Who?” Liz asked. She hadn’t seen Maria with anyone. Was it one of the guys from work?

“Speak of the devil.” Maria said, watching the crowd part slightly as Max pushed his way through.

“Hey Beautiful.” Max said, giving Liz a quick kiss on the cheek, and immediately grabbing her hand.

Liz gave Maria a quizzically look. Maria had her eye on Max? But then she noticed that Max had brought someone with him.

“I believe you guys know Michael?” Max said. “I’ve hired him as a bodyguard.”

“Oh, I didn’t realise you needed one here. People don’t even seem to notice you amongst the crowd.” Liz pointed out.

“No, he’s not for me, he’s for you.” Max replied. “I want you to be safe.”

“But I’ve got you around to protect me.” Liz replied, not really sure that she wanted Michael following her around wherever she went.

“Yeah, but an extra body can’t hurt.” Max replied.

“You won’t even know I’m there.” Michael butted in, seeing the concern on Liz’s face.

“Okay, okay. But I’m not falling in love with you.” Referring to the Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner movie.

“Deal.” Michael smiled.

* * * * *

Later that night when she and Max were on the dance floor together, she had to admit that she really didn’t notice Michael hanging around. Either he was very good at being invisible, or it had something to do with the fact that he was acting a little more like Maria’s boyfriend than a bodyguard. Maria and Michael had spent most of the night getting to know each other, and had joined Max and Liz on the dance floor. She had to admit that they did look good together.

“Michael and Maria seem to be hitting it off.” Liz turned and said to Max.

“Yeah, that’s part of the reason I hired him. I noticed the other night that Maria seemed to be interested in him, and I decided it couldn’t hurt to give them a chance to spend more time together. Besides, then if we went out, we could double. You would get to spend time with Maria, and she wouldn’t feel like the third wheel.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you.” Liz smiled. “But what about Serena, Alex and Isabel?”

“I think I’m going to have to buy a minibus if I have to find dates for all of them as well.” Max smiled in return.

* * * * *

“How’s it going?” Liz asked Serena as she sat down next to her, wanting a chance to rest her feet after all the dancing. “I see you finally got rid of Alex.”

“Thank goodness. The guy seems very nice, but he can also talk the ears off a chicken.”

“Chickens don’t have ears. Well, none that could fall off anyway…” Liz pointed out, trying to get a mental image of what chickens would look like if they had ears.

“My point exactly. Anyway, I finally agreed that I would check out one of his gigs next week, just to get him to shut up. So you’re going with me right?”

“Of course. You know, with the amount I trail along with you to all of these shows and movies, the LA Times should have me on the payroll too.”

“You give them a story about your relationship with Max Evans, and I’m sure that could be arranged.”

“No, that’s okay, I think I’d prefer to continue to work unpaid.”

“Good choice.” Serena grinned, glad that Liz didn’t know about the amount of money and promotions the Times had been offering her since they found out that Liz was her roommate. There was no amount of money that could get her to do anything that would harm Liz in anyway, so she had flat our refused all offers. She hadn’t told Liz because she didn’t want her to feel obligated to do the interview. The corner office would have been nice though …

“So I see Michael is hanging around. What’s the deal with that?” Serena asked. She had missed Max’s introduction, being so monopolised by Alex.

“Oh, Max hired him as my bodyguard.” Liz replied, embarrassed.

“Really? Cool. So does that mean he’ll be moving in?” Serena asked, raising her eyebrows.

“No. Definitely not.” Liz replied.

“That’s a shame.” Serena grinned mischievously. “I was looking forward to walking on him in the shower.”

“Serena!” Liz admonished. “Besides, I think he already has his eye on Maria.”

“Yeah, I noticed that too.” Serena said, seeing Michael and Maria talking discreetly in the corner. “What is it with you Australian chicks? You seem to get all the guys.”

“We are from the lucky country, you know.” Liz joked.

“Yeah, well, looks like someone is going to get lucky tonight.” Serena replied, indicating to where Michael and Maria were now sharing a heated kiss. “Guess I’ll just have to go back to scouring the ‘Desperate and Dateless’ ads.”

“Since when are you desperate or dateless?” Liz replied. She knew Serena wasn’t interested in Michael - he wasn’t her type. She just got this way whenever she saw anyone around her hooking up, scared of turning 30 without having had at least one serious boyfriend.

“Since I found a grey hair in the mirror this morning. I need to find a man before I start looking old.” Serena whined. “Besides, with you and Max getting together, you’ll soon move in, get married, have six kids and get a pet dog, and forget about little old me.

“I could never forget about you.” Liz replied.

“But I’m still right about the six kids and the dog!” Serena grinned, watching Liz’s face when she realised that she hadn’t denied the rest of what Serena had said.

“You’re incorrigible.” Liz huffed.

“I know. It’s part of my charm.” Serena smiled.

Sorry I've taken a little longer than a week. I've been struggling over this part a bit. I think I am moderately happy with it now.

I need to give credit to some songs I'm using in my little battle-of-the-bands, which are (in order):

Jet Lag - Joss Stone
Mouth Shut - The Veronicas
Absence of Fear - Jewel
Torch the Moon - The Whitlams
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera
Bring me to Life - Evanescence
Fix You - Coldplay

See you next week!

“Are you sure this is okay?” Liz asked hesitantly. They had all decided to leave the club early, and Max suggested that they go back to his place. He had felt bad for leaving Isabel at home alone since she was now home from the hospital, and he thought she might like some company to cheer her up.

“Of course it is.” Max replied. “Isabel is going to love seeing you.”

“But Serena, Maria, Alex and Michael as well? Don’t you think it’s a bit much for all of us to descend on her at once?” Liz asked, still not convinced. “We’re not the sanest bunch of people to have around.”

“Speak for yourself.” Maria said, pulling Alex into a headlock and ruffling up his hair. This only began a tickle fight between Alex and Maria, at which shrills filled the air from Maria.

Liz gave Max a look that told him that they had just proved her point for her, while Michael just looked at Max and shrugged, disassociating himself for their behaviour.

“It’ll be fine.” Max said, although sounding less convinced then he had been a moment ago. Opening the door, he let them into his house.

“I can’t believe I am standing in Max Evans’ house!” Alex exclaimed. “This is so cool!”

“Chill Alex. Don’t lose your cool in front of Mr Evans here– OH MY GOD LOOK AT ALL THOSE OSCARS!!” Maria squealed, before rushing off to check out Max’s mantle that held his various Golden Globes and Oscars.

“Hi.” Came a voice from the couch. Maria turned to see a blonde sitting on the couch.

“Hi?” Maria said, staring mutely while fidgeting with the Oscar award she was still holding.

“Sorry Isabel, this is Maria, Serena, Alex and Michael. Everyone, this is my sister Isabel.” Max introduced.

“Oh thank God you’re his sister. For a minute there I thought Max had a hussy on the side, and I was going to get Michael to escort you outside.” Maria babbled.

“Maria!” Liz admonished. “You knew that we were coming here to see Isabel.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t expect her to look like that.” Maria retorted.

“Look like what exactly?” Isabel asked, intrigued.

“Well. Blonde for a start. And so, um, tall? You really don’t look anything like Max.”

“Uh, thanks… I think.” Isabel replied.

“Isabel and I are both adopted.” Max explained. “We don’t have the same parents – hence why Isabel here has all the brains and the looks in our family…” Max complimented, resting his hand on Isabel’s shoulder.

“Oh Max, you know that’s not true… actually, no it is.” Isabel teased.

“Well, you must be starting to feel a little better if you are up to some verbal sparring.” Max said smiling. He didn’t care how much she teased him as long as she was okay.

“I am feeling a little better. I even managed to eat something for dinner.”

“Great. Next you’ll be running marathons.” Max smiled.

“Maxie-boy? Where’s the bathroom? That last vodka’s gone straight to my bladder.” Maria asked, beginning to hop from one leg to the other.

“Down the corridor and second on the left.” Max directed.

“Thanks. Michael?” Maria said, starting to head to the bathroom.

“What?” Michael retorted.

“Would you like to escort me to the bathroom?” Maria asked raising her eyebrow.

“Why would I want to do that? You heard Max, you can find it yourself.” Michael replied, taking a seat on a chair opposite Isabel.

“Michael … I’m asking you to please escort me to the bathroom.” Maria repeated.

“Women…” Michael huffed before excusing himself and following Maria down the hall.

Serena immediately took Michael’s place on the chair, while Max and Alex left the room with Max agreeing to take Alex on a tour of his house. Liz was in the kitchen rummaging through Max’s cupboards for some snacks.

“Hi Isabel, I’m Serena.” Serena introduced herself. “Liz’s roommate.”

“Nice to meet you Serena.” Isabel replied.

“So … this Max and Liz thing…” Serena began, making herself comfortable on the seat next to Isabel. “You approve?”

“Absolutely.” Isabel smiled.

“Good answer.” Serena replied.

“What are you two talking about over here?” Liz asked, having come back from the kitchen with a bowl of Cheezels, and catching the end of Serena and Isabel’s conversation.

“Nothing. Just comparing notes.” Serena smiled.

Liz just grimaced and went off to find Max and Alex, eventually locating them in the billiard room.

“How are you at pool?” Alex asked, offering Liz a cue.

“I can hold my own.” Liz replied, accepting the challenge.

“Okay. How about you and me against Max and Maria?” Alex suggested.

“Uh … I think Maria is otherwise occupied.” Liz explained.

“Oh, okay. Serena then. I’ll just go and get her.” Alex said, leaving the room.

“Are you sure you really want my friends here?” Liz asked Max after Alex was out of earshot. “Just because you want to be with me, doesn’t mean that you automatically have to put up with my friends as well.”

“I’m starting to think you don’t want me to spend time with your friends. What are you worried about?” Max asked.

“Nothing, I just, I want to make sure that you know that you have a choice here. You don’t have to feel like you have to open your house up to everyone I know because you think it will make me happy.”

“I do want to make you happy, but I also want to get to know everything about you, and part of that is seeing you with your friends.” Max replied, taking a step closer to her, and reaching for her face. “You know, your face lights up a certain way when you are with your friends. You get this look like, at that moment, everything is right with the world and you are … content. So maybe I’m being a little selfish, by orchestrating more moments in which I can see that look on your face, but I just love seeing you like that.”

“Wow.” Liz blushed. She had no idea that Max had studied her so much. “So tell me. What do you see in my face when I’m with you?”

“When you’re with me …” Max thought seriously for a moment, trying to find the right way to say it. “You have a hundred different looks. I see attraction…” and as Liz turned her head away and blushed, he continued “But also timidness. Sometimes you look really happy … but sometimes you look distant, like you have the whole world on your shoulders. But the look that I really wish I didn’t see… is when you look almost scared. You know you have nothing to be afraid of when you’re with me, don’t you?”

Liz’s head shot up and she saw Max staring at her intently.

“I … I…” She stuttered.

“Alex, I can do it myself.” Isabel’s voice came from the doorway. Max and Liz looked across the room to where Alex was carrying Isabel through the doorway.

“Max, would you please tell Alex that I’m not helpless.” Isabel begged Max.

“Hey, I would have done the same thing. And besides, weren’t you just complaining earlier today that I wasn’t waiting on you enough?” Max smiled.

“Yeah, but you’re my brother – it’s your job to wait on me.” Isabel grinned.

“I don’t mind waiting on you either.” Alex said, placing Isabel gently on the love seat in the corner. “Just let me know if you need anything.”

“Thanks.” Isabel blushed. It had been a long time since anyone had paid her attention like Alex was at that moment. Normally he wasn’t the kind of guy she would look twice at, but he had her intrigued.

“So are we going to play pool or what?” Serena asked, looking at the space that was growing bigger between Max and Liz, and growing smaller between Alex and Isabel.

“Yeah.” Liz replied, shaking her thoughts. “I’ll break.”

* * * * *

“You know what Parker … you are a pool shark!” Alex exclaimed after Liz had potted yet another ball in a row. “Feel like hitting a pool hall and hustling some money off of some bikies?”

“Uh, I think I’ll pass, thanks Alex.” Liz replied, taking a swig of her second Corona for the night. She hadn’t had anything to drink at the club, but now that she was in the privacy of Max’s home where she was safe … well, relatively speaking anyway… she was letting her hair down a little. She hadn’t actually planned to drink at all that night, but what Max had said to her earlier about his observations had freaked her out a little. Was she subconsciously scared of him? Or was he reading too much into it?

As Liz bent down to take the final shot at the eight-ball, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck start to prickle, knowing instantly that Max was in the vicinity.

“Don’t miss …” Max breathed in her ear, as an attempt to distract her at the moment her cue hit the white ball. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t work and the eight-ball slid neatly into the corner pocket.

“Nice try Evans.” Liz said, standing up and turning around to face him. “That’s two games to nil. Feel like being humiliated again?”

“If it means I get to watch you longer, then I don’t mind…” Max breathed, leaning into Liz who was pressed up against the pool table. Her heart fluttered for a moment, and then her chest began to constrict. What the hell was wrong with her?

Luckily for Liz, the entrance of Maria and Michael into the room quickly interrupted them.

“Looking a little ruffled there Maria.” Alex teased.

“Shut up.” Maria replied, although unable to suppress the grin from ear to ear. Michael immediately walked over to the bar and got himself a beer.

“So, who’s playing?” Maria asked, referring to the balls on the table that Alex had just been resetting.

“You can take my place.” Liz said, quickly squeezing past Max and handing Maria the pool cue. Without turning to see the look of confusion on Max’s face, she quickly went and took a seat with Isabel.

“Prepare to see how it’s done.” Maria said to Max, Alex and Serena who were still standing around the pool table. Maria took her time setting up the shot, slowly pulled the cue back, and then quickly sent the white ball in the direction of the triangle. Unfortunately, ‘in the direction’ was not nearly close enough, and she not only missed every other ball on the table, but potted the white ball in the process.

“Nice work Maria.” Serena retorted, setting the white ball up again. “That’ll be two shots for me.”

Maria’s face went a deep shade of red, and she sullenly went to get herself a drink from the bar.

“So Isabel, how are you feeling?” Liz asked.

“I’m okay. Better than I was a couple of days ago at least.”

“You know… If there is anything I can do, just name it.” Liz offered.

“Just keep making my brother happy, that’s all I need to make me feel better.” Isabel replied.

Liz looked over to where Max was standing talking to Michael, waiting for his next shot. As if sensing that she was looking at him, he looked over to her and gave her a weak smile, still confused by her sudden disappearance from his side.

“I’ll try.” Liz replied. “But I don’t know whether I can.”

“Why not?” Isabel asked confused.

“I … I need another drink.” Liz excused herself, unable to answer Isabel’s question.

Isabel watched as Liz hurried over to the bar, and then her eyes drifted towards her brother. Max was also watching Liz and then turned his eyes back to his sister. He frowned when he saw the look of confusion on Isabel’s face, and then turned back to watch Liz slam down a shot of whatever Maria had been making at the bar. Within seconds, she had downed another one.

“We need some music on in here.” Maria announced. “Max, where is your stereo?”

Max led Maria over to the other side of the room, and revealed a panel behind which was a stereo and LCD screen showing all of the CD’s on his hard drive. He flicked on a couple of switches and music filtered out of the speakers around the room.

“Wow. You’ve got a big collection here Max. I’m impressed.” Maria said, scrolling through the various CD’s. “It’s going to take me forever to pick one.”

“Let me.” Max replied, scrolling through the list of songs.

“Hey Maria, it’s your turn.” Alex called from the other side of the room.

“Coming…” Maria replied, as the sounds of Joss Stone began filtering though the room. “Hmmm, nice choice Max.”

Little angels
Whisper softly
While my heart melts
For you and I'll see
Only sunshine
Only moonlight
For the first time its real

And the higher you take me
The more that you make me
Feel so hazy
Tell me what this means

I got jet lag and I never even left the ground
See it's like that every time you come around
Oh, I'm so hung over and I never even touched a drop
See I can't get enough
This must be love

Max looked over to where Liz was standing in the corner, swaying to the music. He gave her a pointed look, as if to say ‘this song is how I feel about you’. Liz read his look and turned her eyes away, wondering if he could feel her panic from across the room. He watched a moment of indecision cross on her face before she hastily made her way over to the stereo. After scrolling through the list of songs, she selected one and seconds later the speakers began blaring a different tune.

I kept my mouth shut from the start
I guess I left you in the dark
You thought you knew me but you don't
You say you'll love me but you wont
When you find out who I am

I kept my mouth shut for too long
All this time you got me wrong
Now we're in this way too far
I'm about to break your heart
Tear everything we had apart

Max heard the words, and within moments he was back at the stereo, scrolling through the songs again. Liz had moved away from the stereo, and watched him from the bar, wondering what he was going to play next. She didn’t know what had possessed her to bare her soul like that in front of everyone, and in front of Max. And now she wondered what his reaction to it would be.

As the next song began to play, Max turned and gave Liz another pointed look, as if to tell her that he wasn’t going to let her end things before they had even begun. He wasn’t going to let her leave because she was too scared to stay.

Inside my skin
There is this space...
It twists and turns
It bleeds and aches

Inside my heart
There's an empty room.
It's waiting for lightning;
It's waiting for you

I am wanting, and...
I am needing you
To be here
Inside the absence of fear

Liz hurried to the stereo and scrolled through the list of songs again, until she found what she needed to say. By this time everyone in the room had stopped their conversations and their game of pool and just watched what was going on between Max and Liz. She knew everyone would be intently listening to the words of the next song, but she didn’t care anymore. She had to attempt to tell Max that she was more damaged than he knew, to give him the chance to back away before they said anything more.

Torch the moon, burn the schools
She wrote in red on her bedroom wall -
"Nothing's pure", the paint runs to the floor

She laughs too easily and cries too hard
Shouldn't drink alone, the colours run
How can she forgive
When we know well what we do?

Feather scratches on her wrist
Dry run with a bread knife for a final twist
It wouldn't be for show if it should come to this

She was born to feel it all, to see it all
When I feel so lightly it's still burning brightly
And she won't look away

Torch the moon, burn the schools
Why it's a man making all the rules
Frida Khalo poster on her door

Max looked Liz in the eye, almost panicked by what Liz was trying to tell him. Whatever had been haunting her for the past few weeks was a lot worse and a lot deeper than he had ever imagined. He had to let her know that everything was okay, no matter what she was going through.

To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The piece is gone left the puzzle undone
That's the way it is

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down
Don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do
No matter what they say
When the sun is shining through
Then the clouds won't stay

Liz’s heart fluttered, Max thought she was beautiful, not matter what she had been trying to tell him. No matter how dark her soul was. Maybe he could help her after all. Searching through the songs, she found the one that would be her way of reaching out for him. If he didn’t take it, then, well, she didn’t know what she was going to do.

How can you see into my eyes like open doors
leading you down into my core
where I’ve become so numb without a soul my spirit sleeping somewhere cold
until you find it there and lead it back home

(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Max smiled. Liz was reaching out to him, and he was going to let her know that he would reach back and hold on for dear life. So he spent a little more time on his next choice. Once and for all she needed to know that he would do anything to help her through whatever she was going through.

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears streamed down Liz’s face as she heard the words to the song. It was one of her favourite songs, but she never imagined that someone would be saying the words to her. Max wanted to help fix whatever was wrong. She looked up at Max, letting the tears continue to run down her cheeks. She watched as he began to hesitantly walk towards her, and reach out his hand. She stared at it for a moment, wanting so much to take it in hers, but the little voice of doubt and insecurity returned, telling her that he would feel the same way once she told him about her past. Watching the fear in Max’s eyes when he realised that she wasn’t going to accept his hand, she mouthed the word ‘sorry’ and ran from the room.
"Do you see what we’ve done?
We’ve gone and made such fools of ourselves..."

So last week I almost ended the part with a happy ending. I actually had it all written out. But then I decided I needed a scene change. So any of you her were thinking Liz was just running away again, it wasn't her fault, she was only doing my bidding! (insert evil laugh here).

I hope this makes up for dragging the whole thing out. Of course, we are by no means finished - I'm having way too much fun!

I hope you enjoy this part.

Oh, and credit goes to ABBA's 'Dancing Queen'. I must have been feeling nostalgic because there is also mention in there somewhere of the B52's 'Love Shack'. (I hope you get the reference to 'Tin roof rusted' - it seems to be a tradition at parties that everyone in the room must sing that line at the top of their lungs. I wasn't sure if it was just a daggy Aussie thing or a world-wide phenomenon. If anyone would like to let me know, your response would help my survey of the worlds varying party cultures.)

Anyway, enjoy. Plus I should mention that my operation is now a week away, so I'm not sure if I'll get one more post in beforehand or not, so bear with me if I take a while to post next week.

Within seconds, Max was out of the room after Liz. He immediately went to the front door, thinking she would have left the house, but the door was still locked from the inside. He searched every room, but found no sign of her. As he entered the living room one more time, he noticed that the sliding door to the balcony was not completely shut, and the curtain was blowing in the wind. Hesitantly he stepped out onto the balcony, but he didn’t see her immediately. As he was about to walk back inside, he heard Liz’s voice.

“I’m so sorry Max.” She said.

Max looked over into the corner and saw Liz sitting on the ground in the darkened corner of the balcony, with her back against the living room window. She had her eyes shut, but had spoken as though she had known that it would be him to come and find her. She opened her eyes and looked at him, the tears still streaming down her face.

“What can I do?” Max asked desperately. He hated seeing her upset, and felt sorry that he had pushed her too hard with the songs he had used to tell her how he felt.

“Just listen.” Liz replied.

Max obediently remained silent, wondering what Liz was going to say. From the look on her face he knew she would either tell him what was going on, or tell him goodbye.

“I really need to tell you what is going on, because it is eating me up inside and I’ve had enough. I’ve had enough of being scared.”

“What are you scared of?” Max asked, knowing he shouldn’t interrupt, but couldn’t help himself. Was she scared of him?

“Before you mentioned it tonight, I hadn’t realised it myself, but I am scared when I am around you. I’m scared that you won’t love me when you find out about my past and how screwed up I am over it. I’m scared to be alone with you, but most of all I’m scared that he’ll come back to hurt me again.”

“Who?” Max asked, his interest suddenly escalating. A man had done something to her. An old boyfriend?

“His name is Sean, Sean Deluca.” Liz answered, and when she saw the confused look on Max’s face she continued, “Yes, Maria’s brother.”

“He was your boyfriend?” Max asked.

“No!” Liz replied defensively, and then more quietly, “No. No, he was just a friend. I’ve never had a boyfriend.”

“Never?” Max asked. “Why not?”

“Because of what Sean did to me.” Liz replied.

She looked away from Max and looked out to the ocean. Max’s face went white – he had a very clear idea of what Liz was going to tell him.

“No...” The word escaped Max’s lips.

“Maria and I were celebrating one night, having received our tertiary placements after we finished high school. Maria went inside the house for a while, and Sean came out to keep me company. Next thing I know, he’s on top of me, and I couldn’t stop him.”

“Liz…” Max said, reaching down to touch her, but she flinched away.

“He raped me, and I wasn’t strong enough to fight him off.”

“The bastard...” Max swore, running his hands over his temples and starting to pace in front of Liz.

“So I ran away. I left Australia, went overseas, told myself that I was okay, but in reality I just pushed everything under the surface. I never dealt with it, I just shut myself off. I’ve never had a boyfriend. I’ve never trusted any man to get close to me. I tried to go on a date once. Serena convinced me to go on a blind date with this guy she knew from work not long after I met her. I should have said no, but I went as a favour to her. I spent the entire night in the ladies room, too scared to be sitting across the table from him… And it is scaring me to death to be here with you now.” Liz admitted.

“You have nothing to be scared of. I’m not like him. I would never hurt you.” Max promised.

“I know… It’s just, sometimes I have these panic attacks, and no matter how much I tell myself that I can trust you, sometimes my brain and my heart aren’t on the same wavelength.”

“What can I do?” Max begged, dropping down on his knees next to Liz. “Please tell me what I can do to make you feel safe around me.”

Liz turned to look at Max, and gave a faint smile.

“Just be yourself.” Liz replied. “Be the wonderful, charming man you are and be patient with me. Sometimes I might freak out, but I come to my senses eventually.” Liz joked.

“It’s not funny.” Max replied solemnly.

“I know.” Liz’s smile dropped. “And I’d understand if you just wanted to walk away. This is your chance Max. I’m giving you an ‘out’. Walk away now before I screw up your perfect life even more.”

Max stood up and walked towards the door, and Liz closed her eyes, not wanting to watch him walk away from her. She shivered, feeling suddenly cold without him beside her.

“What makes you think my life was so perfect before you got here?” Max retorted, not walking away, but pacing the balcony again.

Liz’s eyes snapped open. Max was still standing before her.

“C’mon Max. Your rich, successful, famous, not to mention drop dead gorgeous. You get thousands of love letters a week. Why would you want to be with me when you could have any woman in the world?”

“The only woman I want is you.” Max replied, no longer pacing. “Okay, so I have met a lot of women in my time, and many that are less … complicated.” Max replied, trying to find the right word to describe the rollercoaster that Liz was putting them both through. “But no other woman has captivated me like you have. No other woman has occupied my thoughts like you have, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No other woman makes me believe that I could give up my career, my money, my fancy cars, if it meant that I could spend one more minute in the same room as her. You have cast this beautiful, magical spell over me Liz Parker … so don’t think for a second that I would ever willingly walk away from you.”

Liz was breathless, speechless, and just gapped at Max. How could he feel that way about her when she couldn’t offer him perfection?

“Being with me is never going to be normal.” Liz replied.

“What’s so great about normal? I want something better … with you.” Max replied with a smile.

“Max …” Liz blushed. “What if I can’t give you what you want?”

“Just let me love you, that’s all I ask.”

“And if I freak out occasionally?” Liz asked.

“Let me in. Let me help you, or, if you can’t do that, just promise that you’ll come back to me when it’s subsided.”

“I can do that.” Liz promised.

“Good.” Max smiled, reaching out his hand to Liz. “Now, should we return to our friends? They’ll be getting worried.”

“Okay.” Liz replied, smiling at the fact that he had referred to them as ‘their’ friends, not ‘hers’. Liz gave Max her hand and he helped her to her feet. They walked back to the pool room hand in hand, and Liz couldn’t help but think how right it felt.

“Ready?” Max asked, about to lead Liz into the pool room where they could hear whispered conversation from the other side of the door.

“Ready.” Liz replied.

Max pushed open the door, and as he stepped through he saw the look of pity on Serena and Maria’s faces. Their faces beamed once they realised that Liz was right behind him.

“So, what’s been happening in here?” Max asked, trying to break the silence and take the attention off of Liz.

“We’ve had the follow up battle-of-the-bands between Maria and Michael, but we had to put an end to it before it ended in bloodshed.” Serena replied.

“Well I just don’t know how anyone could call whatever that noise that Metallica were making, real music.” Maria replied in her defence.

“Metallica is the greatest band on Earth.” Michael retorted. “Much better than that angry girl music you had us listening to.”

“What would you have us listening to instead? Kelly Clarkson or another Idol superstar wannabe?”

“See what I mean.” Serena said to Max and Liz. “So I’ve delegated the task of choosing the next song to Alex, but he’s been over at the stereo for the past ten minutes trying to make a decision.”

“I haven’t been over here for that long, you just sent me over here moments before Max and Liz came into the room to disguise the fact that we’d been talking about them – oh, oops, forget I just said that. Okay, I think I’ve found something appropriate.” Alex said, hitting the play button. The sound of the B52’s flooded the room.

“Love Shack?” Serena groaned. “This is like a hundred years old.”

“But such a good song to lighten the mood. Anyone want to dance with little old Alex?”

“Count me in.” Maria replied, joining Alex in the middle of the room. “Liz?”

“Sure.” Liz replied, squeezing Max’s hand before letting go and joining Alex and Maria. Soon the three of them were jumping around singing at the top of their lungs.

“Everything okay?” Isabel asked Max as he joined her where she was still sitting on the love seat.

“I think it will be. That’s enough for me.” Max replied, and the smile he gave his sister put her at ease.

“But you won’t tell me what’s going on?” Isabel pushed a little.

“It’s not my story to tell.” Max replied. “Liz just needs our support at the moment.”

“Of course.” Isabel replied, placing her hand on her brother’s knee. “You know you’ll both always have mine.”

“I know.” Max replied, putting his hand on top of his sister’s.

“Thank you for everything you have done for me since I got sick. I don’t know what I would have done without you.” Isabel said, quickly wiping the tears that were threatening to fall.

“It’s my pleasure Iz.” Max replied. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Thank you.” Isabel smiled.

They were interrupted by the sound of screeching coming from the dance floor as the threesome sang ‘Tin roof rusted’ at the top of their lungs.

“So… feel like dancing?” Max asked with a wink.

“I don’t think so.” Isabel refused.

“Oh, c’mon Isabel. Of course you want to.” Alex interjected. “And I’ve got just the song...”

“I’m too tired.” Isabel replied.

“Then, we’ll have to make you feel like you’re dancing on air.” Alex replied, as he made his way over from the stereo and the sounds of Abba filled the room. “This song’s just for you.”

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

Alex bent down to wrap one of Isabel’s arms around his neck, while Max took the other side. They both led her to the dance floor, supporting her weight so she barely felt as though she was touching the floor.

“Yay, Isabel!” Maria squealed, making room for Isabel to join their little dance party that had just doubled in size. Liz had even managed to get Serena to join them, although Serena still pretended to show her annoyance at having to stoop so low. Maria had tried to persuade Michael but he had managed to find the on button for the LCD TV behind the bar and was busy watching the basketball, groaning whenever the group sang too loud for him to hear the commentators.

Max looked at the smile that was now permanently affixed to Isabel’s face, and the laughter in her eyes that had been missing for the past month. He then turned to look at Liz and saw that a weight seemed to have been lifted from her too. At that moment he felt as though he couldn’t ask for anything more than to see his two favourite women with smiles on their faces. He just hoped that nothing ever happened to take them away again.

I just can't help myself ...

Had a little time on my hands - so make sure you remember how lucky you are at getting this bonus update if I find that I can't post next week ...

BTW - no responses on my world party culture survey from yesterday - obviously there's not that much partying going on in the rest of the world. Pity. You obviously all need to come down to Australia for a little R n' R

“Can you excuse me for a minute?” Max asked the journalist who was about to start yet another interview about his latest movie. His mobile phone had started vibrating in his pocket, and he was anxious that it was going to be Isabel asking for his help. Last night’s dancing had worn her out a little, so he was a little worried about her.

A smile came over his face when he saw Liz’s name on the caller ID, he put a little more distance between himself and the journalist before answering the phone.

“Hey beautiful.” He answered the phone.

“Hey yourself.” Liz replied, inwardly beaming at his warm hello.

“What’s up?” Max asked.

“Are you home at the moment?”

“No, I’m about to do an interview. Why?” Max replied.

“I think I left my handbag at your place last night. Will Isabel be home to let me in if I drop around to pick it up?” Liz asked.

“No. She’s gone to our parents’ house today.”

“Oh, damn, I really need my purse.” Liz sighed.

“I’ll give you the security code so you can let yourself in.” Max offered.

“Oh, no, you don’t have to do that.” Liz immediately turned down the offer. Her heart was racing – he was practically offering her a key to his apartment!

“I insist.” Max replied, not taking ‘no’ for an answer. He had no qualms about letting Liz having access to his place. He wanted her to feel welcome there anytime.

“Are you sure?” Liz asked, really feeling like she shouldn’t accept, but she really needed her purse to buy some groceries before she and Serena started dying of hunger, or worse, resorting to the unmarked cans of food that Serena had had in their pantry since the dawn of time.

“Positive. It’s 5-5-4-3-8-7. Just punch in the code and press ‘hash’. You should hear a beep once the alarm is switched off and hear the door click. Do the same on the way out to reset it.”

“Thank you so much for this Max.” Liz replied gratefully, jotting down the number. “See you tonight.”

“I’ll be by to pick you up at seven. Bye Liz.”

“Bye Max, see you then.”

Max sat back down on the couch to begin the interview, and the journalist gave him a look as if he was her next meal. She’d obviously heard enough of the conversation to realise that she could have an exclusive if she played her cards right.

“No comment.” Max said, before she had even asked her first question.

* * * * *

Liz took out the piece of paper on which she had written Max’s security code. Punching the number into the keypad, she heard the door click and pushed it open. Searching the house she tried to remember where she had last seen her purse. She searched every room that she had been in, but it was no where to be seen.

About to give up, assuming that it must have been back at her apartment after all, she heard a noise coming from Max’s bedroom.

“Isabel?” Liz called, assuming that Isabel must have decided to stay home instead of going to her parents place. She had looked pretty tired when Liz and her friends had left the night before.

There was no reply from Isabel, and Liz began to panic when she realised that the alarm hadn’t beeped when she had punched in the code. So if it wasn’t Isabel in the house, who was it? Liz immediately imagined a freaky stalker fan who had no doubt broken into Max’s house to tie herself to the bedposts, or something equally disturbing.

Liz’s first thought was to dial the emergency number for the police, but she really didn’t want to explain who she was and why she was in Max’s Evans’ house. Witness statements had a nasty way of getting into the hands of the media. So instead, she crept up to the bedroom and slowly pushed the door open, after having grabbed one of Max’s Oscars from the mantle as a weapon.

There, lying on the bed in nothing but her lingerie, was none other than Tess Harding.

“Tess Harding!” Liz exclaimed, trying not to burst into a fit of laughter. “What are you doing here?”

“What are you doing here?” Tess asked, bolting upright.

“Looking for this.” Liz replied, grapping her handbag that was sitting on the dresser. “But you didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?”

“Knitting a sweater. What does it look like I’m doing?” Tess retorted.

“Ah, it kind of looks like you’re breaking and entering, not to mention acting a bit like a stalker.” Liz smiled. “Does Max know you are here?”

“Not exactly.”

“And how did you get in?” Liz asked.

“Max gave me his security code.” Tess replied haughtily.

“I’m sure he did.” Liz replied.

“So, tell me something. Why is a caterer leaving her handbag in Max’s bedroom? And why are you holding his Oscar? Thinking of taking it as a souvenir?” Tess asked, referring to the bag Liz had picked up, and the Oscar in her hand. She wondered why she hadn’t noticed a female’s bag in Max’s room before.

“The Oscar was in case you were a dangerous stalker, which I guess you’re not.” Liz admitted while putting down the Oscar on the dresser, secretly believing Tess was definitely showing major stalker tendencies.

“And I left my bag here because last night Max and I made mad passionate love, just about where you are sitting now actually, and in the after sex-daze I must have forgotten that I had left it behind.” Liz replied, trying to get a rise out of Tess. Of course it wasn’t true, but Tess didn’t have to know that.

It worked, and Tess’ face went white as all of the colour drained from her face.

“I don’t believe you …” Tess replied hesitantly, although you could see her thinking seriously about it.

“Fine. It doesn’t really matter to me whether you do or not. Anyway, I’ve gotta run. Have a nice day Beatrice.” Liz said before hurrying out of the room. Not just because she was worried at Tess’ reaction at being called by her real name, but also because the sight of Tess in her lingerie was starting to burn images into her brain that she really didn’t want to have to see.

As soon as Liz closed the front door behind her, she called Max back on his mobile.

“Hi. Did you get your bag okay?” Max said when he answered his phone. He had just finished the interview, successfully dodging any questions that the journalist tried to ask about Liz’s identity.

“Yeah. I have a question for you though. How many people have your security code?” Liz asked.

“Just you, Isabel and the cleaner. Why?”

“In that case you had better fire your cleaner for giving out your security code.”

“What?” Max exclaimed, “Was there someone in my house?”

“Yeah, your lovely co-star. Lying on your bed. Wearing clothes that left nothing to the imagination I might add.”

“You’re kidding me.” Max replied stunned that Tess would pull a stunt like that. What the hell was she thinking?

“I wish I was. She and I had a nice little chat, and I left, but she’s still inside. Do you want me to call the police?” Liz offered with an evil grin.

“Tempting, but no. I wouldn’t want that kind of publicity. I’ll have to deal with it myself.”

“Okay, well I have to run, Serena’s waiting for me. I’ll talk to you later.” Liz replied.

“Liz.” Max said, before Liz had hung up the phone.

“Yeah?”

“You know that Tess and I aren’t… I mean … I didn’t invite her over.” Max stammered, fearing that behind the cool demeanour Liz was currently displaying, she was actually freaking out and thinking that he had been sleeping with Tess behind her back.

“Max, I’m okay.” Liz replied, knowing exactly what Max was thinking. “After what I have put you through lately, and for you to still tell me that I am the only woman in the world for you, I know that I have absolutely nothing to worry about. I trust you.”

“Thanks Liz.” Max replied with relief. “I’ll see you later for the party.”

“See you then.” Liz replied before turning off her phone.

Before leaving his house the previous night, Max had invited Liz to join him at an industry party on the following night. It was going to be their first social engagement as a couple. Max had been in two minds about whether or not they should be seen in public together so soon. He wanted more than anything to be able to show Liz off to the world, and give Tess a right-royal-wake-up call, but he also didn’t want Liz to have to put up with all the publicity. Eventually Liz had convinced him that it was okay, and that they were going to have to do it sooner or later. The fact that she didn’t want Tess on his arm all night was also a big incentive. After today’s stunt, she was happier than ever that they had agreed to go to the party together.

* * * * *

Max raced home as soon as he could get away. Only ten minutes had passed since he had been on the phone to Liz, and he doubted Tess would have left that quickly.

The front door was unlocked, and he walked straight up to his room where Liz had told him Tess had been.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Max demanded as he pushed the door open and stormed inside. Liz had been right - Tess’ clothes definitely didn’t leave anything to the imagination.

“I wanted to surprise you.” Tess purred, kneeling on the bed in front of him, making sure he was able to get a good look at all of her curves.

“Put your clothes on.” Max said, picking up Tess’ clothes from the floor and throwing them at her.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Tess continued to purr, completely undeterred by his offish behaviour.

“There isn’t going to be anything between you and me … ever. Why can’t you get that?” Max replied exasperated.

“Oh c’mon Max. Would you stop with the denial already, it’s getting old. You and I both know that what we had together was good. Why wouldn’t you want to try it again?” Tess asked.

“What you and I had is over. It was over a long time ago.” Max replied, trying to shake the image of Tess’ naked body from his mind.

“Then how can you explain the chemistry we have? We practically set fire to the screen.”

“Because we’re actors Tess, it’s what we do.”

“It’s not just that.” Tess persisted. “With every kiss, I can feel just how much you mean it.”

“It’s just acting Tess. There’s nothing more to it. I’m not in love with you, and I never have been.” Max added for the additional sting.

“Don’t say that.” Tess replied, taken aback. “You don’t mean it.”

“What do I need to do to get it through that head of yours? Yes, we used to go out, but there is nothing between us now. And there never will be again.” Max replied before adding “You only have yourself to thank for that.”

“It was a mistake. He didn’t mean anything. I was lonely, and he was there.” Tess tried to make excuses.

“Everyone gets lonely Tess, but most of us can deal with it without jumping into bed with the biggest player in the industry. Oh, but wait, that would be you now wouldn’t it. You two are made for each other.” Max retorted.

“But I want you.” Tess replied.

“I don’t give a shit because I sure as hell don’t want you.” Max replied. “Now get out of my house before I call the police.”

“You wouldn’t.” Tess dared.

“You’re probably right, I wouldn’t. But that won’t stop me from dragging you out of here by your hair if I have to.” Max threatened.

“Fine, I’m leaving. I need to get ready for tonight anyway. The studio wants us to go together. What time are you picking me up?” Tess asked.

“I’m not. I have a date.”

“With who? That bitch who was here before?” Tess replied. “You didn’t really sleep with her did you? She’s not good enough for you.”

“That’s it…” Max said through clenched teeth before grabbing Tess by the arm, barely letting her stop to pick up the rest of her clothes, and dragging her out of the house and slamming the door on her, leaving her to quickly pulled some clothes over her half-naked body.

“MAX!” Tess screamed as she banged on the door, barely noticing the people walking past the house staring. “You can’t do this to me!”

“I just did.” Max said with a smile on his face, before locking the door behind him and walking away.
"Do you see what we’ve done?
We’ve gone and made such fools of ourselves..."

Thanks for the bumps. I'm back, and without a limp - well almost. Op went ok - soon I'll be running marathons - well, hopefully...

Just because I had so much time on my hands, I've got 2 chapters for you. Plus I'm updating 'Beware of the Phoenix' too in case any one is interested (all three of you).

If you don't enjoy this part, I blame it on the pain killers...

“God, I hate these parties.” Max sighed. He was driving with Liz in his black SUV, on their way to the club.

“Then why do you go?” Liz asked. She had thought that she would be more excited about getting to meet so many famous celebrities, but right now she would have preferred just spending time alone with Max.

“Networking. That’s it.”

“But surely you wouldn’t have to work too hard to get a role?” Liz asked incredulously.

“They don’t all just fall in my lap.” Max replied. “Okay, some do, but then there are some directors who need a little convincing to cast someone like me. You tend to get stereotyped into a certain kind of role, so you have to really fight for anything that is different. At parties like this, everyone is there all vying for the best jobs. If you’re not there, you probably won’t even be considered.”

“So who are we sucking up to tonight?” Liz asked.

“We are sucking up to John Stockwell. Apparently they are making a sequel to ‘Into the Blue’ and Paul Walker couldn’t do it because in a moment of desperation he agreed to sign up for ‘The Fast and the Furious 4’.”

“Hmmm, let’s see … Jessica Alba … or fast cars …” Liz said, putting out her hands as if she was weighing up the options. “I think he made the wrong choice.”

“Well, I guess there’s always a market for movies about fast cars. All those young boys out there, wanting to show of their testosterone.”

“I think the same demographic would see a Jessica Alba movie too.” Liz countered.

“You’re a fan of Jessica Alba?” Max asked.

“Of course. She’s stunning, and besides, the chick can jump tall buildings in a single bound.” Liz replied, referring to her escapades in ‘Dark Angel’.

“Yeah, she is pretty cool.”

“So, why do you want to do this movie so bad anyway?” Liz asked curiously. She didn’t recall the first one doing brilliantly at the box office.

“Well … a couple of reasons. I’ve always wanted to learn how to dive. And it’s being shot on the Great Barrier Reef…”

“Nice location.” Liz agreed.

“… and I was thinking maybe you’d come down to Australia with me and show me around your home country.”

“Oh…” Liz replied.

Max gave Liz a sideways glance – she didn’t look too thrilled at the idea. Maybe he had pushed too hard again?

“Forget it …” Max said, trying to retract what he had said.

“No Max. It’s okay. It’s just … I hadn’t really thought about going home just yet.”

“The movie doesn’t shoot for another eight months.” Max countered.

“Well … in that case … I’ll probably already be back in Australia. My visa expires before then.” Liz replied, still not looking overly happy.

“Oh … right … I forgot about that.” Max said, it dawning on him that Liz may not always be there. But they still had almost six months together – a lot could happen in six months. And surely someone like him could pull some strings …

“Anyway, this is it.” Max said, wanting to change the subject, and they had just pulled up to the club where the party was being held. The valets were immediately at the door to open the car doors for them.

The moment Liz stepped out of the car, she was blinded by the flashes from all the cameras. She had momentarily forgotten that the paparazzi would be there, and was grateful when she felt Max’s hand on her elbow, guiding her towards the club doors.

Inside, the club was already packed, Max either wanting to be fashionably late, or else just putting off having to go at all. Liz recognised quite a few people in the room, and she almost felt like she was on a movie set. Looking around though, she couldn’t see any cameras rolling.

“Ready?” Max asked.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” Liz replied.

Max placed his hand on the small of her back and led her through the room, acknowledging various people as they passed.

“Max! It’s about time you got here.” An older gentleman said, slapping Max on the back. “But I see what detained you. Who’s your beautiful young friend?”

“Liz, let me introduce you to Peter Jackson, Peter, this is Liz.” Max said, doing the introduction.

“Nice to meet you.” Liz said, holding out her hand to greet him, and was surprised when he took her hand and placed a kiss on it.

“The pleasure is all mine.” He replied.

“So Max…” Peter turned his attention back to Max. “When are we going to get this show on the road? We’ve already held production up by three weeks waiting for you.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry. I’ve had …”

“… family issues, I know.” Peter finished for him. “But the studio is getting nervous and threatening to find someone else if you can’t do it. Please don’t tell me that is going to happen.”

“I’ve made a commitment and I’m going to honour it. I’ll be there next week.”

“That’s my boy!” Peter said, slapping Max on the back again. “So Liz, have you ever been to Vancouver?”

“Vancouver?” Liz asked, confused by the sudden change of subject.

“Yeah, Vancouver. That’s where we’re shooting the movie.” Peter explained.

Liz looked at Max in shock. This was the first time she had heard any mention of Max having to go to Vancouver for work. She had just assumed his next role would be filmed in LA.

“Um, yeah, I spent part of the winter there back a few years ago.” Liz replied, hoping the sudden disappointment she felt at hearing Max was going away didn’t show in her voice.

“And how did you find it?” Peter asked.

“Cold.” Liz replied, remembering her fingers going numb as she carried her bags of groceries back to the apartment from the supermarket; and the cold air on her face – the only part of her body that wasn’t hidden under layers.

“Oh, c’mon. Vancouver’s not cold. Not compared to the rest of Canada – or parts of the US for that matter.”

“Yeah, but compared to Australia, it’s like being in the arctic.” Liz smiled.

“I was wondering about the accent… So tell me, how does a girl from Australia find herself in LA, on the arm of Max Evans no less.” Peter asked inquisitively.

“What can I say … I’m irresistible.” Liz replied.

“That you are dear, that you are …” Peter replied with a smile. “Max, I like your girl. She’s got spirit. Speaking of spirit … here comes your co-star.”

Max looked over to where Peter was indicating and saw Tess make a bee-line for them. It was too late for Liz and Max to excuse themselves without creating a scene, and soon he and Peter found themselves each greeted with a kiss from Tess.

“Max, Peter, how are you both?” Tess asked, completely ignoring Liz standing next to Max.

“Good Tess.” Peter replied. “Have you met Liz here?”

“Liz, sorry I didn’t see you there.” Tess replied haughtily, as though acknowledging Liz’s presence was beneath her.

“Tess, I didn’t recognise you with your clothes on.” Liz replied, at which both Max and Peter almost choked on their drinks. Peter gave Max a look as if to say he was more impressed with Liz by the minute.

“Hmmph.” Tess grunted in reply, unable to come up with an immediate comeback.

“So Tess, looks like shooting is going to go ahead next week. Max here has finally agreed to join us.” Peter announced.

“So you’ve finally realised there is nothing worthwhile keeping you here.” Tess said to Max, while staring pointedly at Liz.

“Watch it Tess …” Max warned.

“What? I’m just saying…”

“I know what you’re saying.” Max replied getting defensive.

“Now, now, that’s enough. Do I have to separate you two?” Peter asked, getting nervous that the tension that was set to explode was going to spill over into his movie – and not in a good way.

“Please.” Max replied.

“No.” Tess replied at the exact same moment. Her eyes darted at Max when she realised that his answer had been in the affirmative.

Peter looked at both of them, not knowing what to say.

“Well, it was nice to see you again Peter.” Max said, shaking his hand. “I’ll talk to you later about the arrangements.”

“It was nice to see you too Max, and it was nice to meet you Liz.” Peter smiled. “I hope you’ll come up and visit us on the set. We’d love to have you.”

“Thank you.” Liz replied, as Max took her hand in his, and led her away.

“Sorry about that.” Max apologised, once they were out of earshot.

“It’s not your fault. I just … now that I’ve met Tess … I find it hard to imagine how you can possibly have so much chemistry together on screen.”

“Believe me … it’s not easy. But hopefully this is the last movie we will make together for some time.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because I stupidly signed a six movie contract with Universal a few years ago, and Tess did the same. They’ve had us star in every one of those movies together. This is the last one, and then I’m free.” Max explained.

“So, Vancouver huh?” Liz said, broaching the subject of Max’s impending departure.

“I know I should have said something earlier…” Max acknowledged.

“Why didn’t you?” Liz asked. She still couldn’t believe it. He was leaving next week.

“Denial. I didn’t want to face the thought of leaving you so soon.” Max admitted.

“How long will you be gone for?” Liz asked. How long did it take to make a movie anyway?

“We’re hoping to get it wrapped up within three months, but you never know with these types of shoots. It depends on so many factors. The weather being one of them – and Tess’ mood swings.”

“Three months …” Liz repeated.

“But Vancouver’s not that far away. I’ll try and come back whenever I can … and maybe Amy will let you have some time off to come up and visit me on the set.”

“I’d like that.” Liz replied, partly driven by a desire to see Max, and partly because she wanted to keep an eye on Tess, who she didn’t trust one little bit.

“It’ll go fast, you’ll see.” Max promised.

Liz nodded, but couldn’t find the words to say that would tell Max that she believed him.

* * * * *

Later that night Liz had left Max talking to John Stockwell with the excuse of needing to use the ladies room. Unfortunately she had timed it at the worst moment, because when she left the stall, she found Tess at the mirrors reapplying her makeup.

“Tess.” Liz acknowledged unenthusiastically.

“Liz.” Tess replied with as much enthusiasm. Tess was about to walk out, but then stopped, realising what a perfect opportunity she had to talk to Liz alone.

“So, Max and I will be together in Vancouver next week… I still remember the last time we were there together … we had been skiing at Whistler, and had returned to the chalet to warm up, if you know what I mean…” Tess began. “It’s amazing what that boy can do in a hot tub.”

Liz didn’t reply, but washed her hands as quickly as possible so she could leave the room.

“The man is insatiable … but I guess you’ve probably discovered that already by now… and he has a particular preference for public places … and public bathrooms. In fact, I believe we’ve actually made love on this very bench top…” Tess said, running her hands over the bench top, as if savouring the memories.

Liz turned to leave, but Tess quickly put her hand on the door to stop Liz pulling it open.

“Don’t think you’re special … you just happen to be the flavour of the month. Once he’s bored with you, you’ll be passed over for the next model.”

“Speaking from experience?” Liz jeered.

“What makes you think what we had is over?” Tess taunted.

“Because the guy can’t stand the sight of you. Or hadn’t you noticed?”

“You’re so naïve…” Tess taunted.

“And you’re delusional.” Liz replied, before shoving her way past Tess and back into the club. She saw Max still talking to the director, but decided to head to the bar instead. She needed something to calm her down a bit.

“What can I get you?” The barman asked.

“Cosmopolitan.” Liz replied, taking a seat on one of the empty stools. Looking up and down the bar she saw Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Kevin Spacey and William Defoe, just to name a few. She would have felt a little star-struck if she wasn’t still torturing herself by thinking over what Tess had been saying.

“Let me guess …” A voice came from beside her. Liz turned around to see a woman looking at her critically. “Your agent told you that this was the place to be to get your first big break, but you’ve found it is not as easy as you thought. So now you’re drowning your sorrows at the bar because you can’t bear the thought of receiving yet another rejection…”

Liz was about to interrupt, but the woman seemed to have this whole speech worked out and she would hate to have spoiled it.

“… well I’m about to offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’ve been ordered to find the next Cameron Diaz, and I have a feeling you’re it. What would you say to a small part in Ben Stiller’s next movie? It’s a two week job max, but the potential for exposure is enormous. What do you say?”

“I had always thought of myself as more of a Drew Barrymore …” Liz replied.

“Drew, Cameron, whatever.”

“Look lady, I think you’ve got me all wrong. I’m not here as an aspiring actress looking for work. I’m just here as a plus one.”

“Who are you here with?” The woman asked sceptically.

“Max Evans.” Liz announced, wanting to rub it in the woman’s face.

“Max Evans? Yeah right.” The woman scoffed.

Liz crossed her arms and raised her eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You’re not Max’s type.” The woman replied.

“What is Max’s type exactly?” Liz asked curiously. She was really beginning to wonder who this woman was for her to have an opinion on who Max should be dating.

“Well, blonder … thinner … bigger breasted.” The woman replied.

“You mean Tess.”

“You can’t deny their chemistry.” The woman stated.

“Or her stalker tendencies …” Liz said under her breath.

“Tess and Max were made for each other. They were the perfect couple.” The woman argued.

“’Were’ being the operative word.” Liz counter argued.

“So they’ve had a temporary fallout… Tess has learnt her lesson. She would never hurt Max like that again.”

“So do you run Tess’ fan club or something?” Liz asked, trying to work out why this woman was so eagerly waving the ‘Vote 1 for Tess’ banner.

“They have been the biggest money spinners for Universal Pictures.” The woman continued, completely ignoring Liz’s question. “Their last five movies have made more for the studio than the studio’s previous twenty movies put together.”

“So you work for Universal Studios?”

“I’m Latanya …” The woman held out her hand.

“… Latanya Stevens.” Max said, joining the conversation.

“Maxie sweetheart, how are you?” Latanya said, kissing the air either side of Max’s face.

“I’m good. You?” Max asked.

“Fantastic.”

“So I see you’ve met Liz.” Max said, putting his arm around Liz’s waist.

“Yeah, we were just getting acquainted.” Latanya smiled.

“Well, I’m sorry to have to put a hold on that, but Liz and I really should be going.” Max apologised, taking Liz’s hand and dragging her out of the club as fast as he could.

“What was that all about?” Liz asked, as soon as they were out of earshot.

“Latanya is not only Tess’ agent, and her number one fan, but she’s also responsible for ever news story concerning Tess and I for the past five years.” Max explained. “The last thing we need is for her to get her claws into you.”

* * * * *

“You’re a little quiet. Is there something wrong?” Max asked, after having spent the last ten minutes driving in complete silence.

“No, nothing’s wrong.” Liz said distantly.

“Is it about Vancouver?” Max asked. “You know … I could stay here … screw the contract.”

“No. You should go. You’ve made a commitment.” Liz sighed.

Max stared at Liz for a moment, then quickly swerved the car off to the side of the road and killed the ignition.

“Did something happen at the club?” Max asked concerned.

“No.” Liz replied, unconvincingly.

“What were you and Latanya talking about?” Max asked. Something had happened between her going to the ladies room and leaving the club.

“Nothing much … you … Tess...”

“Ahhh.” Max replied, as if that explained what the problem was. “What did she say exactly?”

“Something about me not being your type … you and Tess being made for each other … blah blah blah… and that Tess wouldn’t hurt you…”

“She couldn’t possibly…” Max began.

“…again.” Liz finished.

Max’s smile fell.

“What did she mean by that?” Liz asked.

“Nothing …” Max replied automatically, but immediately regretted it when he saw the expression of disbelief on Liz’s face. He had to be honest with her, there was no other alternative.

“Listen, Tess and I did see each other for a while. It ended with me discovering her in bed with someone else.”

“I’m sorry …” Liz began to apologise, but then realised how absurd that sounded.

“Don’t be. She did me a favour. I stopped dating co-stars. I stopped partying. I stopped my wild behaviour.”

“So it’s true …” Liz replied, remembering what Tess had said about Max’s behaviour in the ladies room.

“What’s true?” Max asked confused.

“That you … well … that you used to do some crazy things.”

“I’ve done some things I’m not proud of.” Max confessed.

“Including having a penchant for public places?” Liz blushed. This was not a subject that she really wanted to discuss with Max, but what Tess said had been bothering her and she needed to know if it was true.

“She said what!?” Max exclaimed.

“She said … well she said that you were insatiable, and that you and she would often … you know … have sex in public places.”

“I can’t believe she said that.” Max said disbelievingly.

“Is it true Max?” Liz asked.

“It was a long time ago …” Max replied, not denying it.

“I see …” Liz replied, a little disappointed that it was true.

“Liz … please don’t think any less of me …” Max begged.

“I don’t …” Liz replied unconvincingly.

“I was young, my career was just taking off, and I didn’t know any better.” Max tried to explain.

“It’s none of my business.” Liz replied.

“But you’re upset.” Max prompted.

“No, I’m not … I just … It’s just that it has made me realise how little I know about you.”

“You know me.” Max replied. “You know the real me. You know so much more about me than Tess ever did.”

“But she knows you intimately…”

“And I’m so sorry for that. If I had known that I would have met someone like you … If I had dared hope that I was worth saving myself for someone…”

“It’s okay Max. I wouldn’t have expected anyone our age not to have done it before.” Liz blushed. She couldn’t believe they were actually having a conversation about sex.

“But you haven’t. When we … if we … make love …it’ll be your first time, but not mine.” Max pointed out.

Liz darted him a look, mortified that he would say something like that. She undid her seatbelt and bolted from the car.

“Liz wait!” Max called, immediately catching up to her. She spun around with tears streaming down her face.

“God Max! You know full well that you won’t be my first either.”

“Liz, what you had may have been sex… but it wasn’t making love…” Max explained.

“Fine distinction.” Liz retorted. “So all of those times with Tess – all of those quickies in the ladies room in the middle of a party when you just couldn’t keep it in your pants – that’s what you consider making love?”

“No … I …” Max stuttered in reply.

“Well if that is all there is to look forward to with you - I don’t think I want it.” Liz stated.

“Liz, please … that’s not what I said.” Max back-peddled.

“Take me home.” Liz asked, walking towards the car.

21

“So how was the party?” Serena asked, handing Liz a cup of hot chocolate.

“Fine.” Liz replied, expressionless and seeming to be extremely interested in a spot on the floor.

Liz knew she was being irrational, but since leaving the party she hadn’t been able to shake the image of Max and Tess having sex in the ladies room. She had tried to analyse what was bothering her exactly. It wasn’t the fact that Max and Tess had sex, it was the fact that he had wanted her … needed her … so much that he couldn’t wait to get home. He had to have her then and there, even if it meant getting caught. He either loved her that much, or lusted after her that much … and she couldn’t decide which was worse.

“Meet anyone famous?” Serena asked.

“A few people.”

“Look Liz, if there was ever a time for dropping names, this is it.” Serena prompted.

“Sorry … I’m just a little distracted.” Liz apologised.

“I’ll say. So how was your first date with Max anyway?” Serena changed the subject slightly.

“Up there with my grandmother’s funeral as one of the worst days ever.”

“What happened?” Serena sighed.

“The usual … I freaked out. He didn’t do anything wrong, but I went ballistic. What the hell is wrong with me?” Liz asked.

“I’ve been wondering that myself…” Serena teased.

“Stop it, I mean it.” Liz slapped Serena playfully.

“Okay, so what did Max do to make you freak?” Serena asked more seriously.

“He didn’t do anything per se. But I spoke to Tess …”

“Well that’s your first mistake right there.” Serena interrupted.

“… and she basically told me that Max was this insatiable sex-crazed animal.” Liz finished.

“And you believed her?” Serena asked.

“Not at first. But I mentioned it to Max and he didn’t deny it.”

“Well, what’s the big deal anyway? He’s a guy … all guys are sex-crazed animals.” Serena pointed out.

“Yeah, well, I’m not. I’m like the most complete opposite as he could ever find. I can’t be that kind of girl. I can’t be the kind of girl he needs me to be.”

“Has he asked you to be that kind of girl?” Serena asked.

“No … but that’s not the point.” Liz replied.

“Well, yeah, it kind of is. You’re getting upset about the past. That’s not only unconstructive, but it’s useless. You can’t change the past, but from what I’ve seen, Max has changed the kind of person he is.” Serena argued.

“You’re right. I know you’re right. But I can’t stop torturing myself about it. I must be masochistic.”

“Either that, or else you really have something against being happy.”

“It’s definitely not a concept I’m used to.” Liz replied.

“Well, get used to it. I can see it dominating your future.” Serena predicted.

“And what else do you see Madame Serena?” Liz joked.

“I see Maria’s music career taking off. I see Alex and Isabel hooking up. I see myself finally finding a man who is man enough to handle me. And I see Tess getting her just desserts.”

“So basically a happy-ever-after for everyone.”

“Well, maybe not for Tess...” Serena smiled.

Liz smiled too, but she wasn’t so confident. She knew it wouldn’t be that easy. She couldn’t shake the felling that the black clouds were beginning to roll in.

* * * * *

“I’ll get it!” Serena shouted, heading towards the front door after hearing someone knock. Liz had just arrived home after her shift the following day, and was moping about the fact that Max hadn’t called. No, that wasn’t true. She was moping over the fact that she didn’t have the guts to call him.

Liz’s moping was interrupted by the sound of whispering at the door. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she poked her head around the corner.

“Are you going to let me in or not?” Max asked.

“Not until you promise that you are going to go easy on her.” Serena demanded.

“C’mon … it’s me where talking about.” Max replied. “When have I ever not gone easy on her?”

“He’s right.” Liz piped up after stepping out from around the corner. “He’s never given me any reason to treat him the way I have.”

“Liz …” Max tried to interrupt, but Liz gave him a look as if to warn him not to say anything.

“You know how I warned you that I might freak out occasionally? Well it didn’t take me long did it?” Liz tried to feign a smile. “I’m sorry. You shouldn’t have to put up with this.”

“I would put up with a lot more if it means being with you.” Max replied.

“Stop it.” Liz replied. “Stop being so sweet.”

“I can’t help it.” Max grinned.

“Stop it…” Liz smiled. “I mean it.”

“Look. You warned me about the freak-outs, and I promised that I would be waiting for you when it was over. So here I am.” Max said, holding out his hands.

“It can’t be that easy. I said some things…”

“It’s okay. What you said is true. I know I wasn’t a saint before I met you, and I’m sorry it upset you. But I can’t change what happened. All I can change is the person that I am now. And I promise you that I have changed.”

“I know Max…” Liz interrupted.

“Listen. I don’t expect anything from you. You know that right? I know there’s a chance that you may never be ready for an intimate relationship with me. And if that’s the case, I can accept it. All I want is to be with you.”

“Max, you can’t mean that.” Liz protested.

“Why not? I love you Liz.”

“I love you too Max.” Liz replied, throwing herself into his waiting arms.

“And I love you both.” Serena said, having kept quiet in the corner, but now unable to resist turning the hug into a group hug.

“Serena?” Liz said hesitantly. “Are you crying?”

“No!” Serena replied, as if offended that Liz would suggest such a thing, but at the same time wiping a tear from the corner of her eye.
"Do you see what we’ve done?
We’ve gone and made such fools of ourselves..."

TRICK OR TREAT?!

Okay, you got me, it's a treat. Brand new update hot off the press.

Thanks for all the magnificent feedback. You guys are so great.

Also, a big shout out to my mum who has just started reading my fics. Actually, I probably should have waited until after her university assignments were finished before giving her the web address, because apparently she is following in my footsteps and staying up until all hours reading fanfic rather than writing assignments! (Although now, I'm up all hours writing instead just to keep up with your demands (yes I'm talking about you LairaBehr4!) rather than getting to read any.)

Happy Halloween ...

“So when are you leaving?” Liz broached the subject of Max’s imminent departure. They had just had a heavy make out session on the sofa, and momentarily stopped to come up for air.

“Thursday.” Max replied, propping himself back up into a sitting position at the other end of the sofa, where he could more easily read Liz’s expression while they had this conversation.

“So soon?” Liz replied, her eyes glazing over as she thought through all the implications of Max going away.

“I’ve put it off as long as I can.”

“… to be with your sister.” Liz continued.

“No Liz … to be with you.”

Liz’s eyes shot up towards him, and she couldn’t hide a smile.

“You stayed here for me?” Liz asked incredulously.

“Of course. I did stay for Isabel too, but you were my main reason for putting off leaving LA for so long.”

Liz spun around on the couch, so that she could snuggle back up to Max. She was amazed at how comfortable they fitted together.

“When will you be back?” Liz asked.

“Well, the first break in my schedule is in three weeks, and then I’ll be on the first flight back to see you.”

“Three weeks.” Liz repeated. Three weeks. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do for three whole weeks without Max around.

“I’ll call every night …” Max promised.

“I’ll be waiting by the phone…” Liz counter-promised.

“And Liz?” Max began. “While I’m gone will you promise me something?”

“Anything.” Liz replied.

“Will you promise me that you won’t believe anything you read in the tabloids or see on TV? Will you try and give me the benefit of the doubt?”

“I promise. I think I’ve learnt my lesson there.” Liz replied, remembering the fiasco with the shoelace.

“That’s my girl.” Max replied, placing a kiss on Liz’s forehead.

“Will you promise me something?” Liz asked in return.

“Anything.” Max replied, using Liz’s words.

“Will you try not to spend more time with Tess than you have to? I think she’s bad for your health.” Liz smiled.

“I’ll do my best.” Max smiled as well.

“So, what’s this movie about anyway?” Liz asked, sinking into Max’s arms a little further.

“It’s a sequel to ‘Against the Tide’, called ‘Against the Current’.” Max replied.

“How much did they pay someone to come up with that title?” Liz scoffed.

“It’s a romance…” Max continued.

“I guessed that much.” Liz answered.

“And , well … it’s a little darker than the first one. It’s definitely not a comedy.”

“But what’s the plot?” Liz pushed.

“Well, my character and Tess’ have separated since the end of ‘Against the Tide’. The sequel is about how we find each other again, after, well, a lot of angst. My character basically hates her, and doesn’t let her near him. He treats very badly, but for some reason she stays around until she can break through to him.”

“Well, let’s hope art doesn’t imitate life…” Liz murmured.

“Hey, you’ve got nothing to worry about.” Max replied, taking her hand in his and linking their fingers together.

“I know. So, can I read the script?” Liz asked.

“Oh, uh, well, I guess so. If you have time before I go.” Max replied, not sounding overly keen.

“Cool. So what are we going to do between now and Thursday?” Liz asked.

“Spend every waking moment together?” Max suggested.

“Hmmm … I do have to work though.” Liz replied.

“I’ll help you. You can teach me to cook. Amy can advertise to customers that they’re having their meals cooked by ‘Max Evans’. It’ll be a publicity bonanza.”

“On one condition… You personally apologise to any customer you give food poisoning to.” Liz smiled.

Max’s response was to smack her with a cushion, which started an all out pillow fight war. At the end of which, Max had somehow managed to find himself on top of Liz.

“Sorry.” He immediately apologised, moving off of her, afraid he was going to freak Liz out by his proximity.

“Don’t be.” Liz replied. And she wasn’t freaked out, not even a little bit. Her chest wasn’t constricting, and her palms weren’t sweating. Maybe there was hope for her after all?

“I should be going anyway.” Max replied, getting up to leave.

“Why?” Liz asked.

“Because it is 2am, and I need my beauty sleep.” Max replied, grabbing his jacket.

“Is that how you get so gorgeous? Man, you must sleep a lot.” Liz smiled.

“Watch it.” Max warned, threatening to grab the nearby cushion again and continue their pillow fight. Liz put her hands up in surrender.

“So I’ll see you at 7am?” Liz asked.

“7am?”

“Breakfast shift tomorrow. I’m going to teach you how to make Eggs Benedict.”

* * * * *

“So Max is really going away?” Maria asked.

“Yeah. I can’t believe it myself.” Liz replied, wiping the kitchen counter.

“It’s too bad … and he seemed like such a promising cook too.” Maria said, referring to Max’s debut in the kitchen that morning.

Customers were lining up around the block once word got out that Max Evans was cooking breakfast at Café Blu. Maria was run off her feet all morning, but was loving the extra tips.

“So – we should have a party.” Maria stated.

“A party?” Liz replied.

“Yeah – you know. Music, dancing, alcohol, singing, or perhaps drunken musical singing and dancing.”

“You think that’s a good idea?” Liz replied, seriously considering the idea.

“Of course. Why not? Any excuse for a party.”

“Yeah, but still. I’m not sure a big night out is what we all need.” Liz argued.

“Did someone mention a party?” Max said, walking into the kitchen after having just finished his duty to Amy of signing autographs for the customers.

“Maria here thought we should have a party before you leave.” Liz explained.

“I just thought you needed an appropriate send off.” Maria explained.

“Well … I found out today that apparently Peter Jackson felt the same way, and has organised a pre-shoot party for Wednesday night. It’s for family and friends of the cast and crew to have a bit of fun before we up and leave for three months. Would you both like to come?” Max asked.

“Wow. Of course. I’d love to.” Maria replied.

“Liz?” Max asked, sensing her hesitation.

“Sure.” Liz replied, although with less enthusiasm than Maria.

“Great.” Max replied.

“Just one thing I should probably mention. Peter Jackson is a huge fan of karaoke…”

“Cool.” Maria replied. She rocked at karaoke.

“… and the musical director is going to be there. It’ll be a great chance for you to showcase you talent. I’ve mentioned your name. He’s looking forward to seeing you and maybe using you for some of the songs in the movie.”

“Ohmygodohmygodohmygod.” Maria hyperventilated, before throwing herself at Max. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“No problem Maria.” Max said, trying to steady himself under Maria’s weight.

“I can’t believe it!” Maria gushed. “But are you sure? You haven’t even heard me sing.”

“Liz has told me how good you are, and I trust her judgement.”

“I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you for this opportunity Max.” Maria said, comprehending what an opportunity it was going to be.

“There’s no need. I’m glad to get the chance to use my powers for good instead of evil.” Max joked. “So don’t forget to bring your guitar so you can do some originals.”

“I will. Thanks again Max.” Maria replied gratefully, beginning to run over in her mind exactly what songs she was going to perform.

“No probs.” Max replied. “Anyway, I’ve gotta run.”

“Where are you going? What happened to ‘every waking moment’?” Liz asked, referring to Max’s promise that they would spend every waking moment together until Thursday.

“I have secret men’s business to take care of.” Max explained, putting his arms around Liz’s waist. “But I’ll come by as soon as I’m done.”

“Okay. I’ll see you soon.” Liz replied, as Max gave her a kiss on the forehead.

“So what do you think his ‘secret men’s business’ is?” Maria asked, once Max was out of earshot.

“I don’t know. He’s probably just gone to see his sister.” Liz replied, getting back to cleaning up the kitchen so she could go home.

“I bet you ten bucks it is more than that.” Maria said.

“You’re on.” Liz accepted the bet.

“Okay. So now that your McDreamy has gone. Let’s talk about my love life.” Maria said, planting herself on the bench opposite where Liz was cleaning up.

“How are you and Michael?” Liz asked.

“I’m good. Michael’s good. Together? I’m not so sure.” Maria admitted.

“What’s the problem?”

“I just can’t read him. One minute he’s hot – the next he’s cold. He’s either acting like he can’t get enough of my body, or he’s telling me that he’s too busy to see me because he’s hanging out with the guys? I mean, what’s up with that? And don’t even get me started about his behaviour at the mall the other day. He’s the one who asked if he could come with me, and then he proceeded to complain about how long I was taking in the change rooms? Of course – he wasn’t complaining once he joined me in the change room, but that’s another story.” Maria said winking. “But the guy has no fashion sense. I mean, how long has it been since Metallica released an album but he still insists on wearing their t-shirts? They’ve all got holes in them but he refuses to throw them out. I tried to buy him some new shirts but he complained that I was trying to change him! But the sex … oh my goodness, the man’s a god …But, is that really enough? I’m not looking to settle down or anything, that’s not what I’m saying, but I also don’t want to waste my time if this can’t possibly go anywhere. You know what I mean?” Maria finally stopped for breath.

Liz just smiled.

“What?” Maria asked.

“You haven’t changed at all in the past few years have you?” Liz observed. Maria always talked a million miles a minute and could change the topic five times without breaking a sweat.

“I’ve changed Liz… You can’t lose your best friend without it changing you in some way. I’ve just had to learn how to hide it.” Maria replied seriously, getting down from off the bench.

“I’m sorry Maria…” Liz apologised.

“Yeah, well, it’s in the past.” Maria brushed it off. “I’d better get going. I’ve gotta choose some songs for the party.”

“Do you want some help?” Liz offered, feeling bad for making light of how her disappearance affected Maria.

“Nah. That’s cool. You’ve got a date with Dreamboy. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Maria replied, giving Liz a quick hug, before hanging up her apron and leaving through the back door.

Liz sighed in her empty kitchen. Maybe one good thing would come out of being able to spend less time with Max – it would give her a chance to mend some bridges.

Sorry for briefly going MIA. What can I say? I'm a busy girl. Plus I think you'll find an extra long chapter here to make up for it.

Acknowledgements to the musicians I am once again stealing songs from - all in the name of promoting Australian music of course (with the exception of #3, but I'll personally adopt them as honorary Australians). In order of appearance:
Missy Higgins - The Sound of White
The Whitlams - Best Work
Riddlin Kids - Here we go again
The Veronicas - Secret

Also, in case anyone is interested, I'm supposed to be giving an author's chat at 'Roswell Heaven' on Thursday if anyone wants to join me (or - if I messed up my calculation of the timezone difference, I might still be asleep recovering from the U2 concert when I'm supposed to be chatting - in which case - feel free to talk amongst yourselves! )

Thanks for all the bumps - hopefully this makes it all worth your while ... Oh - and welcome to all the new readers. Thanks for letting me know that you were enjoying my story! See you next week ...

“So, Michael and I had another fight.” Maria said, as she and Liz got ready for the party.

“What about?” Liz asked.

“We were supposed to go out for dinner and a movie, but he completely blew me off to go bowling with his friends.”

“Maybe he just forgot about your date?” Liz offered.

“Well that’s the point. Am I that forgettable?”

“Of course not.” Liz replied. “So what did he say when you reminded him?”

“He said he double booked and asked if I would mind going bowling instead.”

“So did you?”

“Of course not. Have you seen the shoes they make you wear? Not to mention that you never know whose feet have been in them before you.” Maria replied in disgust. “Besides, you’ve seen me bowl before – it’s not pretty. Gutter-ball every time.”

“You could have just watched.” Liz suggested.

“I know. But it’s wasn’t what I had planned. I really just wanted to spend some time alone with Michael. I’ve never met any of his friends. They could’ve been freaks – and knowing Michael, that wouldn’t surprise me.”

“But if you are going to be with Michael, you’re going to have to meet his friends at some point.” Liz pointed out.

“I know, you’re right. I just had this night all planned, and wasn’t really in the right mind set to just hang out with his friends. Not to mention that I was still pissed over the amount of times he had been late to pick me up this week. Some excuse about hanging out at Alex’s and losing track of time. Since when does he hang out with Alex?”

Maria kept babbling about all of Michael indiscretions until Max and Michael arrived to escort them to the party. Liz could feel the frost emanating from Maria towards Michael, but he seemed to be oblivious – or was doing well at hiding the fact that he had noticed. It felt like the second-coming of the ice age when Michael failed to realise that Maria was expecting him to help her get her guitar into the boot of the car. Max eventually grabbed the guitar instead, and put it in the car for her.

“Thank you Max.” Maria said pointedly looking at Michael.

“What? You’ve got two hands.” Michael said gruffly.

“Unbelievable…” Maria mumbled, getting into the car and trying to sit as far away from Michael as the back seat allowed.

The four of them drove in relative silence to the party, and once there, Maria immediately dragged Liz towards the ladies room for more ‘girl talk’.

“So what’d you do?” Max asked Michael, as they headed for the bar.

“I haven’t got a clue.” Michael replied honestly.

* * * * *

Later that night, after the karaoke had officially kicked off and Alex, Isabel and Serena had arrived, the gang sat at a table near the bar, watching the various crew members making a fool of themselves at the microphone.

“So where’s your protégée?” A man asked Max, having meandered his way through the crowd.

“Maria, I’d like you to meet Phil. He’s the music director for the movie.” Max said, standing up and introducing Maria.

“It’s nice to meet you.” Maria said, holding out her hand, which he instantly took.

“So, not to put any pressure on you or anything, but you’d better be a hundred times better than this lot.” Phil said, pointing to the cameramen who were currently singing ‘YMCA’ by ‘The Village People’.

“I think that’s almost a certainty.” Maria replied smiling.

“Well then, I’ve got your name on the list to go next then.” Phil replied. “Good luck. We’ll talk later.”

“Thanks Phil.” Maria replied, suddenly getting nervous. At least she wasn’t following someone with a half decent voice. She would sound perfect compared to the drunken Village People.

“Wish me luck.” Maria said to Liz, and squeezing her hand.

“You’ll be great.” Liz promised, squeezing back.

Maria cautiously made her way to the side of the stage, and waited in the wings for the Village Idiots to take their final bow.

“You can do it Maria.” She said, giving herself a pep talk. “It’s only your entire future on the line.”

“And next up, we have Maria Deluca. Give her a hand.” The MC introduced her.

Grabbing her guitar, she made her way to the microphone, grateful when someone pulled up a stool behind her for her to sit on.

“I’d like to do one of my own songs for you.” Maria said into the microphone as she settled on the stool with her guitar. “I wrote this song a few years ago when I was in a particularly dark place. A really good friend of mine had disappeared without a word, and sometimes it felt as though she had died. Well, this is the song that came out of that grief.”

Maria began slowly strumming on the guitar, before her angelic voice began singing.

Like a freeze-dried rose
You will never be what you were
What you were to me in memory
But if I listen to the dark
You’ll embrace me like a star
Envelope me
Envelope me

If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me to before you went away
If only for a day
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me back to the tune we played
Before you went away

And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white

You’re my mystery
One mystery
My mystery
One mystery

The entire room had gone silent as everyone listened to the words Maria was singing. None more so than Liz, who felt a pang of guilt at hearing how her disappearance had really affected Maria. Maria was singing as though Liz had died, and that really hit home to her how selfish she had been by leaving, and staying away, the way she did.

My silence solidifies
Until that hollow void erases you
Erases you
So I can’t feel at all
But if I never feel again
At least that nothingness will end the painful dream
Of you and me

If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me to before you went away
If only for a day
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me back to the tune we played
Before you went away

And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear I hear your smile
And breathe your light
And if I listen to
The sound of white

Tears began to stream down Liz’s face, and she didn’t even bother to wipe them away. She deserved to feel this bad after what she did. Max put an arm around her and she had to stop herself from shrugging him off. She didn’t feel as though she deserved to be comforted.

I knelt before some strangers face
But I’d never had the courage
Or belief to trust this place
But I dropped my head
‘Cos it felt like lead
And I’m sure I felt your fingers through my hair

And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white

There was a massive round of applause from everyone in the room, and Maria was shell-shocked at the response.

“Thank you.” She said into the microphone, before turning to walk off the stage. After doing a mini-happy dance once she was out of eyesight of the crowd, she found Liz waiting for her, looking like a train wreck.

“Babe? Are you okay?” Maria asked.

“No.” Liz replied, pulling Maria into the biggest hug she could manage. “I’m so sorry.”

“Hey, it’s okay.” Maria said, squeezing Liz back.

“It’s not okay Maria. I’ve been so selfish. I don’t know how you could forgive me for leaving you like I did.”

“I’m just happy that I’ve found you again.” Maria said honestly. “The rest is ancient history. Besides, it made for hundreds of emotionally-charged gut-wrenching songs that will catapult me to stardom.”

“It’s not funny.” Liz replied, picking up that Maria was trying to make light of it so Liz would feel better.

“I know. But it can’t be undone. We can just work on the future. Promise me we’ll be friends forever, and that’s all that matters.”

“I promise.” Liz replied.

“Good. Now, let’s go and find our seats so we can make fun of the next victim to the karaoke stage.” Maria suggested.

“Okay.” Liz smiled, taking Maria’s hand and walking back to where Max and the gang were.

“This should be a laugh.” They heard Max say when they got back to their seats. Liz and Maria both looked towards the stage and saw why Max’s comment was justified. Tess had made her way to the stage and was currently picking which song she was going to sing.

“Maybe she can sing.” Liz suggested hopefully. “She might be good.”

“Trust me. She’s not.” Max replied.

“I would like to dedicate this song to the love of my life…” Tess announced.

“Oh God no.” Max said, burying his face in his hands. “She wouldn’t…”

“… Max Evans.” Tess finished.

“She would.” Michael replied grinning and slapping Max on the back. Max just wanted to shrivel up in the corner rather than hear what Tess was going to sing in front of everybody.

“This one’s called ‘Best work’. It’s Australian, just the way you like it…” Tess announced.

Maria and Liz just looked at each other.

“She’s not …” Maria began.

“Oh God I hope not.” Liz replied.

Max was right about Tess being unable to sing. She not only missed the first note, but every syllable following was out of key.

After the fall
Things will never be the same
How in the world
Can anyone love again?

Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on

“And she did…” Maria exclaimed, before covering her ears. “She’s completely ruining this song.”

“I’m never going to be able to listen to ‘The Whitlams’ the same way every again.” Liz also groaned. “She’s killing it!”

I never dreamed about you
When we were never far apart
But now that I’m without you
You’re here all through night

Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
I would ride the ups and downs
Be a woman and get my feet back on the ground

Meanwhile, while Maria and Liz were almost withering around on the floor in pain, Max was watching Tess with a frown. He couldn’t believe that she was embarrassing herself like that in front of everyone. And embarrassing him too for that matter. He knew he shouldn’t be surprised, but he had thought she had more class than that…

Some of my best work
Some of my best work
My best work was you
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on

Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now

“Would someone get me some earplugs?” Maria groaned, unable to block out the sound of Tess’ grating voice.

“I think it’s almost over.” Liz replied hopefully. “Please God, let it be almost over.”

But when Tess began the final chorus, both Maria and Liz cried out in exasperation.

Some of my best work
Some of my best work
My best work was you
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
I don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
I don’t want to know
If you’re moving on

There’s no lovers up above
There’s no lovers only love

As the song ended, there was an obligatory five second clap from the audience, but you could tell that they were all relieved that the song had finally finished. Max was too, until he realised that when Tess left the stage, she was headed in his direction. She pushed her way into the group, bumping Liz out of the way as she did. Michael moved in, his body-guard instincts kicking in.

“Can I help you?” Michael said, towering over Tess.

Tess just completely ignored him and turned her attention to Max.

“Max? Can we talk? Privately?” Tess asked.

“No Tess, we can’t.” Max replied. There was no way in hell he was going anywhere with her alone.

“Well, okay …” Tess conceded, looking at the rest of the group who were staring her down, wondering whether she wanted to say what she needed to in front of everyone. She decided she did.

“Max. I just wanted to say … you were my best work.”

“That was your best?” Max replied scathingly.

Tess didn’t have a reply, but looked defeated. Before she turned to go, Max could see the tears well up in her eyes. For a moment he regretted saying what he did. He had never seen her look so vulnerable in front of him before – well, when she wasn’t acting anyway.

“Tess, wait.” He said, wanting to apologise, but Tess pulled away and ran out of the room. He hesitated for a moment before going after her.

The group looked in shock, none more so than Liz. Max was going after Tess? Hell had actually frozen over and all the damned were wearing ice skates.

“Nice going bodyguard.” Maria said, referring to Michael’s great skills at protecting Liz from Tess.

“Have you got a problem?” Michael retorted.

“I’m just saying …” Maria began.

“So … Liz.” Alex began, wanting to prevent World War III, as well as draw everyone’s attention away from the door Max and Tess had just disappeared through. “When are we going to get to hear you sing?”

“When hell freezes over… Damn, that has already happened. Okay, in that case, definitely not until I’ve had a lot more to drink.” Liz replied, making her way to the bar and ordering a cosmopolitan.

“Michael? What about you?” Alex grinned.

Michael gave him a look which made Alex drop the grin.

“Oh, Maria. I haven’t told you how great you were up there.” Alex said, referring to her debut that they had yet to comment on, thanks to Tess’ performance. “I knew you would be though.”

“Thanks Alex.” Maria said, again looking pointedly at Michael, who hadn’t yet said anything to her.

“So when you get the deal, you’ll put in a good word for your old buddy Alex won’t you?” Alex hinted, putting an arm around her.

“Maybe … if I get the deal.” Maria stressed the word ‘if’. Nothing was certain yet.

“Consider it done.” Phil said, startling Maria by appearing from behind her. “That was fantastic. I’m assuming there’s more where that came from?”

“Absolutely.” Maria promised.

“In that case. Here’s my card. Set up a time with my assistant and we’ll start working through some details.” Phil said, handing Maria his card.

“I will. Thank you so much for this opportunity.” Maria gushed.

“No problem. I’m looking forward to working with you. Just promise me something…” Phil began.

“Anything.” Maria replied.

“Get up there a few more times tonight. Someone has to save us from more of what we just heard.” Phil smiled, referring to Tess’ singing debut.

“I think I can do that.” Maria smiled. “Thanks again.”

* * * * *

Meanwhile, Max was in the lobby with Tess …

“Tess. Wait up.” Max called out. Tess stopped and turned around. Tears were streaming down her face.

“Look. I’m sorry for what I said.” Max apologised.

“That was my grand gesture Max. I don’t know what else I can do to make you see how much I love you.” Tess replied.

“There’s nothing you can do. It’s over.” Max explained.

“It can’t be! What we had was something special. Something like that doesn’t disappear so easily.”

“If it was so damn special, why did you sleep with him?” Max demanded.

“We’ve been through this. I was lonely. I shouldn’t have done it, and I’m sorry.” Tess apologised.

“It’s not enough Tess.”

“Just give me one more chance. We can go back to how we were.” Tess begged.

“We can’t go back Tess. It’s too late.” Max replied.

“Tell me what to do. I’ll do anything.” Tess pleaded. “We can get back to that place.”

“No Tess, we can’t.” Max replied, starting to regret his decision to follow Tess out here. “And I don’t want to.”

“It’s because of her, isn’t it?” Tess said, her demeanour instantly changing from being repentant, to being accusing.

She has a name. And yes – I love her.”

“You only just met her. You don’t know anything about her.” Tess retorted.

“I know more about her than I ever knew about you. She lets me in. With you … most of the time I don’t even know if you’re showing me the real you or if it is all an act.”

Tess looked at him with tears welling up in her eyes.

“See, there…” Max began, “is that you, or are you putting on a show to get me to feel sorry for you?”

“Would it make a difference?” Tess asked. “Would it make you come back to me?”

“No. But it may make me despise you a little less.” Max admitted.

Tess visibly flinched at hearing how Max really felt about her.

“You weren’t the perfect boyfriend either you know.” Tess retorted.

“But I didn’t cheat on you.” Max replied. “That’s the difference.”

“Well, if you had of been there for me when I needed you, I wouldn’t have needed to.” Tess replied.

“If you had let me in and told me how you were feeling, instead of acting as your usual high-and-might self-sufficient self, I would have known what you needed.”

“Well, I’m telling you now.” Tess replied.

“And I’m telling you that you’re too late. I don’t feel that way about you anymore… I’m not sure that I ever did.”

“You did … I know you did.”

“I may have thought I did, but to tell you the truth, I never really understood what real love was until I met Liz.”

Tess flinched for the second time, before impulsively lunging towards Max and kissing him on the lips.

“What the hell are you doing?” Max demanded, pushing Tess off of him.

“Trying to break that spell that she’s obviously got you under. You don’t love her – you love me!” Tess screamed.

“You’re insane!” Max replied. “From now on, I want you to stay away from me.”

“That’s going to be a little difficult isn’t it, with the two of us going away to Vancouver together for three months, seeing each other on the set every day, not to mention having adjoining hotel rooms…” Tess said, running her finger down the length of Max’s folded arms.

“We may be in the same movie together, but if you so much as come near me without it being required for the purpose of filming or promoting this movie, I will seek a restraining order.”

“And risk having that come out in the press? You wouldn’t do it. You hate publicity.” Tess tried to call his bluff.

“Not as much as I hate you at this minute.” Max replied, before storming out of the lobby, leaving a screaming Tess in his wake.

Maria had finished talking to Phil, and was about to head to the bar to join Liz, when she heard a familiar voice over the microphone.

“Hi everyone. I want to dedicate this song to my girlfriend. Maria – I wrote this one for you.” Michael said, looking into the lights trying to see Maria in the crowd.

Maria spun around to see Michael standing at the microphone, and Alex up the back with a keyboard and drum machine. Once the music kicked in, Maria was speechless.

Well another bad day's gone by
Another day of being angry
Never known a person who could spend so much time being mad at me
And I didn't mean to get here late, my car ran out of gas
and then a plane crashed into the road and I had to save the people
Didn't think you'd get so mad, but here we go
here we go again

Maria’s jaw feel open, which she hadn’t noticed until Liz shut it for her.

“Wow. I didn’t know Michael could sing. Surprised?” Liz asked.

“Understatement.” Maria replied.

Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again

Well I'm glad that you calmed down
Never thought I'd ever see you smile after your head spun around
and you spit all that green stuff out on me
No, I can't go to the mall
That really sucks you know how much I love to wait while you change again
and again and again and again and again
Didn't mean to let you down, but here we go
here we go again

The audience was in fits of laughter, well, everyone except Maria. The male members of the audience particularly saw the funny side.

Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again

Well, I'm really sorry that - that I made you mad again
That doesn't really mean I'm sorry
Cause it's really not my fault that you're over reacting
here we go, here we go

“So I guess this is why Michael has been spending so much time with Alex lately.” Liz pointed out.

“Yeah, I guess so…” Maria nodded, but kept all of her attention on Michael.

Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again

Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again. Yeah
Don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again

The song ended, and the audience was on their feet with a standing ovation. Michael gave a bow before making a quick exit. Alex took a little longer to leave the stage, giving bow after bow until the next singers had to drag him off stage so they could have a turn.

As Michael headed down the steps he saw Maria at the bottom.

“I know what you’re going to say …” Michael began with the excuses.

“Michael.” Maria interrupted, so he stopped, waiting for the screaming to begin.

“You wrote that for me?” Maria asked.

“Yeah…?” Michael replied hesitantly.

Maria threw herself at Michael giving him a massive hug.

“You’re not mad?” Michael asked, confused.

“Are you kidding? No one has ever taken the time to write a song for me before.” Maria gushed.

“Oh… cool.” Michael said, wondering how his song had managed to put him in the good, rather than bad books. Maria was one confusing girl.

“We should write together sometime. You, me and Alex … Can you imagine it?” Maria said, already planning it in her head.

“Yeah … sure.” Michael replied, getting less enthused by the minute. What had he gotten himself into?

“Hey.” Max said, taking a seat next to Liz at the bar.

“Hey! You’re back.” Liz replied, trying to smother the little green monster that was attempting to rear its ugly head.

“Sorry about that.” Max said, not really sure what Liz was thinking about his little disappearance with Tess.

“It’s okay.” Liz said unconvincingly, as she took the cosmo that the barmen had just handed to her.

“How many of those have you had?” Max asked, seeing the empty glasses that the barmen was clearing from them.

“Not nearly enough.” Liz replied, taking a gulp.

“Are you okay?” Max asked hesitantly.

“I’m fine.” Liz replied, a little too enthusiastically.

“Do you want to ask me something?” Max asked, wanting to make sure that Liz didn’t think anything was going on with him and Tess.

“No. You don’t need to tell me anything.” Liz replied. “I trust you Max.”

“Okay …” Max replied disbelievingly. “Then why are you trying to drink your weight in alcohol?”

Liz blushed. She hadn’t really noticed how much she had had to drink.

“Well … because I don’t trust her.” Liz admitted.

“I don’t love her Liz. You know that right?” Max asked.

“With a voice like that, I don’t blame you?” Liz joked, trying to lighten the conversation, and her mood.

Max wasn’t convinced by her sudden carefree attitude, but their conversation ended when Maria came to drag Liz up on stage. Surprisingly, Liz didn’t resist too hard. Max wondered if that was a sign of how desperate she was to end their discussion.

“What are we going to sing?” Liz asked once they reached the stage. She had been glad to have an excuse to stop talking about Tess, but now that she was on stage she was feeling nervous. What would possess her to agree to sing in front of a crowd?

“You remember the one we wrote about Billy?” Maria asked.

“How could I forget…” Liz said with a smile, knowing she could pull this song off.

“Ladies and Gentlemen.” Maria said into the microphone. “Liz and I would like to sing for you a little number we wrote about an old friend of ours from back home.”

Maria began strumming slowly on the guitar, her voice soon coming in with the intro.

You’re a little obsessed with me, I’m a little bit scared of you
The way you look and stare at me, maybe its time I let you know

The strumming rocked up a little, and Liz came in with the chorus.

You can call me six times, but still I won't pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me, but still I say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
'Cause I always thought you were gay

Liz’s singing wasn’t too bad. She wasn’t going to get a record deal like Maria, but it was acceptable compared to the other people who had graced the karaoke stage that evening. Well, it wasn’t hard. Everyone was better compared to Tess’ effort.

The guitar dropped back to a slow rhythm again, and Maria’s melodical voice came back in.

Every time you come around
You just look me up and down
And then you try to hold my hand
I’m confused and I don’t understand

Liz came back in with the chorus, and Maria kicked the stool away so she and Liz could jump around the stage.

You can call me six times but still I wont pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me but still I'll say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
‘Cause I always thought you were gay

Maria’s voice came in for the bridge, but the tempo didn’t drop as it had for the verses.

You told me lies and made me believe
It would be fine if there was nothing to see
I’d be undressing in front of you
I told you secrets that no one else knew

“Any idea who Billy is?” Max asked Michael.

“No idea… But if I ever see him, I’m going to kick his arse.” Michael replied, taking a swig of beer.

“Ditto.” Max replied.

You can call me six times but I still wont pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me, but still I say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
‘Cause I always thought you were gay

Later that night, Liz was at Max’s house, helping him pack his bags for his flight the next day.

“You don’t have to do this you know.” Max said, feeling bad that it was 2am and Liz had to be up early the next day for the breakfast shift.

“Every waking moment, remember?” Liz replied. “Anyway, I’m not going to see you for three months. I want to soak up as much of you as I can.”

“Come here then.” Max said, using t-shirt he was holding in his hands to wrap around her waist and pull her towards him for a kiss.

“Mmmm.” Liz replied, licking her lips after it was over, as if salivating for more.

“I’m going to miss you.” Liz said.

“I’m going to miss you too.” Max replied. “But it’ll go fast – you’ll see.”

“Promise you won’t forget about me…” Liz said, leaning her cheek against his chest, and wrapping her arms around his waist.

“That’s not even possible.” Max replied.

They stood there for a moment, until Liz suddenly pulled back and looked at Max in the eyes.

“There’s something I want to do.” Liz said.

“What’s that?” Max asked, wondering what put the glint in her eye.

“This.” Liz replied, kissing Max and gradually pulling him down onto the bed. As their make-out session became heavier, Liz’s hands moved towards the end of Max’s shirt, which she pulled over Max’s head and threw to the corner of the room. They continued kissing, but when Max felt Liz’s hand reach for the button of his jeans, he immediately pulled away.

“Liz … wait.” Max said, taking her hand away.

Liz looked at him as if in shock, and then quickly sat up.

“I have to go.” She said, pushing Max off of her, grabbing her jacket and running from the room.

“Liz, wait!” Max called, taking off after her. He caught her at the front door. “Where are you going?”

“I have to go. It’s late. I have work tomorrow.” She babbled.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Max apologised, worried that he hadn’t stopped what they were doing early enough. He didn’t want her to feel pressured into doing anything she wasn’t ready to do.

“You didn’t.” Liz replied, but her voice wasn’t convincing. She turned to leave.

“Please don’t leave like this.” Max begged, grabbing her by the arm.

“Please don’t make me stay.” Liz pleaded in return.

Max relaxed his grip on her arm and reluctantly dropped his arm away from her. She tried not to see the pained expression on his face as she turned to leave.

“I love you.” Max whispered before she walked through the door. She looked at him for a second with an apologetic look on her face, before closing the door behind her.

Max lent against the door and slid to the ground. Burying his head in his hands he wondered how he had managed to ruin everything with in such a short amount of time.
"Do you see what we’ve done?
We’ve gone and made such fools of ourselves..."
