“So, Michael and I had another fight.” Maria said, as she and Liz got ready for the party.
“What about?” Liz asked.
“We were supposed to go out for dinner and a movie, but he completely blew me off to go bowling with his friends.”
“Maybe he just forgot about your date?” Liz offered.
“Well that’s the point. Am I that forgettable?”
“Of course not.” Liz replied. “So what did he say when you reminded him?”
“He said he double booked and asked if I would mind going bowling instead.”
“So did you?”
“Of course not. Have you seen the shoes they make you wear? Not to mention that you never know whose feet have been in them before you.” Maria replied in disgust. “Besides, you’ve seen me bowl before – it’s not pretty. Gutter-ball every time.”
“You could have just watched.” Liz suggested.
“I know. But it’s wasn’t what I had planned. I really just wanted to spend some time alone with Michael. I’ve never met any of his friends. They could’ve been freaks – and knowing Michael, that wouldn’t surprise me.”
“But if you are going to be with Michael, you’re going to have to meet his friends at some point.” Liz pointed out.
“I know, you’re right. I just had this night all planned, and wasn’t really in the right mind set to just hang out with his friends. Not to mention that I was still pissed over the amount of times he had been late to pick me up this week. Some excuse about hanging out at Alex’s and losing track of time. Since when does he hang out with Alex?”
Maria kept babbling about all of Michael indiscretions until Max and Michael arrived to escort them to the party. Liz could feel the frost emanating from Maria towards Michael, but he seemed to be oblivious – or was doing well at hiding the fact that he had noticed. It felt like the second-coming of the ice age when Michael failed to realise that Maria was expecting him to help her get her guitar into the boot of the car. Max eventually grabbed the guitar instead, and put it in the car for her.
“Thank you Max.” Maria said pointedly looking at Michael.
“What? You’ve got two hands.” Michael said gruffly.
“Unbelievable…” Maria mumbled, getting into the car and trying to sit as far away from Michael as the back seat allowed.
The four of them drove in relative silence to the party, and once there, Maria immediately dragged Liz towards the ladies room for more ‘girl talk’.
“So what’d you do?” Max asked Michael, as they headed for the bar.
“I haven’t got a clue.” Michael replied honestly.

Later that night, after the karaoke had officially kicked off and Alex, Isabel and Serena had arrived, the gang sat at a table near the bar, watching the various crew members making a fool of themselves at the microphone.
“So where’s your protégée?” A man asked Max, having meandered his way through the crowd.
“Maria, I’d like you to meet Phil. He’s the music director for the movie.” Max said, standing up and introducing Maria.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Maria said, holding out her hand, which he instantly took.
“So, not to put any pressure on you or anything, but you’d better be a hundred times better than this lot.” Phil said, pointing to the cameramen who were currently singing ‘YMCA’ by ‘The Village People’.
“I think that’s almost a certainty.” Maria replied smiling.
“Well then, I’ve got your name on the list to go next then.” Phil replied. “Good luck. We’ll talk later.”
“Thanks Phil.” Maria replied, suddenly getting nervous. At least she wasn’t following someone with a half decent voice. She would sound perfect compared to the drunken Village People.
“Wish me luck.” Maria said to Liz, and squeezing her hand.
“You’ll be great.” Liz promised, squeezing back.
Maria cautiously made her way to the side of the stage, and waited in the wings for the Village Idiots to take their final bow.
“You can do it Maria.” She said, giving herself a pep talk. “It’s only your entire future on the line.”
“And next up, we have Maria Deluca. Give her a hand.” The MC introduced her.
Grabbing her guitar, she made her way to the microphone, grateful when someone pulled up a stool behind her for her to sit on.
“I’d like to do one of my own songs for you.” Maria said into the microphone as she settled on the stool with her guitar. “I wrote this song a few years ago when I was in a particularly dark place. A really good friend of mine had disappeared without a word, and sometimes it felt as though she had died. Well, this is the song that came out of that grief.”
Maria began slowly strumming on the guitar, before her angelic voice began singing.
Like a freeze-dried rose
You will never be what you were
What you were to me in memory
But if I listen to the dark
You’ll embrace me like a star
Envelope me
Envelope me
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me to before you went away
If only for a day
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me back to the tune we played
Before you went away
And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white
You’re my mystery
One mystery
My mystery
One mystery
The entire room had gone silent as everyone listened to the words Maria was singing. None more so than Liz, who felt a pang of guilt at hearing how her disappearance had really affected Maria. Maria was singing as though Liz had died, and that really hit home to her how selfish she had been by leaving, and staying away, the way she did.
My silence solidifies
Until that hollow void erases you
Erases you
So I can’t feel at all
But if I never feel again
At least that nothingness will end the painful dream
Of you and me
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me to before you went away
If only for a day
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me back to the tune we played
Before you went away
And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear I hear your smile
And breathe your light
And if I listen to
The sound of white
Tears began to stream down Liz’s face, and she didn’t even bother to wipe them away. She deserved to feel this bad after what she did. Max put an arm around her and she had to stop herself from shrugging him off. She didn’t feel as though she deserved to be comforted.
I knelt before some strangers face
But I’d never had the courage
Or belief to trust this place
But I dropped my head
‘Cos it felt like lead
And I’m sure I felt your fingers through my hair
And if I listen to
The sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile
And breathe your light
Yet if I listen to
The sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white
There was a massive round of applause from everyone in the room, and Maria was shell-shocked at the response.
“Thank you.” She said into the microphone, before turning to walk off the stage. After doing a mini-happy dance once she was out of eyesight of the crowd, she found Liz waiting for her, looking like a train wreck.
“Babe? Are you okay?” Maria asked.
“No.” Liz replied, pulling Maria into the biggest hug she could manage. “I’m so sorry.”
“Hey, it’s okay.” Maria said, squeezing Liz back.
“It’s not okay Maria. I’ve been so selfish. I don’t know how you could forgive me for leaving you like I did.”
“I’m just happy that I’ve found you again.” Maria said honestly. “The rest is ancient history. Besides, it made for hundreds of emotionally-charged gut-wrenching songs that will catapult me to stardom.”
“It’s not funny.” Liz replied, picking up that Maria was trying to make light of it so Liz would feel better.
“I know. But it can’t be undone. We can just work on the future. Promise me we’ll be friends forever, and that’s all that matters.”
“I promise.” Liz replied.
“Good. Now, let’s go and find our seats so we can make fun of the next victim to the karaoke stage.” Maria suggested.
“Okay.” Liz smiled, taking Maria’s hand and walking back to where Max and the gang were.
“This should be a laugh.” They heard Max say when they got back to their seats. Liz and Maria both looked towards the stage and saw why Max’s comment was justified. Tess had made her way to the stage and was currently picking which song she was going to sing.
“Maybe she can sing.” Liz suggested hopefully. “She might be good.”
“Trust me. She’s not.” Max replied.
“I would like to dedicate this song to the love of my life…” Tess announced.
“Oh God no.” Max said, burying his face in his hands. “She wouldn’t…”
“… Max Evans.” Tess finished.
“She would.” Michael replied grinning and slapping Max on the back. Max just wanted to shrivel up in the corner rather than hear what Tess was going to sing in front of everybody.
“This one’s called ‘Best work’. It’s Australian, just the way you like it…” Tess announced.
Maria and Liz just looked at each other.
“She’s not …” Maria began.
“Oh God I hope not.” Liz replied.
Max was right about Tess being unable to sing. She not only missed the first note, but every syllable following was out of key.
After the fall
Things will never be the same
How in the world
Can anyone love again?
Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
“And she did…” Maria exclaimed, before covering her ears. “She’s completely ruining this song.”
“I’m never going to be able to listen to ‘The Whitlams’ the same way every again.” Liz also groaned. “She’s killing it!”
I never dreamed about you
When we were never far apart
But now that I’m without you
You’re here all through night
Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
I would ride the ups and downs
Be a woman and get my feet back on the ground
Meanwhile, while Maria and Liz were almost withering around on the floor in pain, Max was watching Tess with a frown. He couldn’t believe that she was embarrassing herself like that in front of everyone. And embarrassing him too for that matter. He knew he shouldn’t be surprised, but he had thought she had more class than that…
Some of my best work
Some of my best work
My best work was you
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
Some of my best work was you
I wish you were here right now
“Would someone get me some earplugs?” Maria groaned, unable to block out the sound of Tess’ grating voice.
“I think it’s almost over.” Liz replied hopefully. “Please God, let it be almost over.”
But when Tess began the final chorus, both Maria and Liz cried out in exasperation.
Some of my best work
Some of my best work
My best work was you
But I still don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
I don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
I don’t want to know
If you’re moving on
There’s no lovers up above
There’s no lovers only love
As the song ended, there was an obligatory five second clap from the audience, but you could tell that they were all relieved that the song had finally finished. Max was too, until he realised that when Tess left the stage, she was headed in his direction. She pushed her way into the group, bumping Liz out of the way as she did. Michael moved in, his body-guard instincts kicking in.
“Can I help you?” Michael said, towering over Tess.
Tess just completely ignored him and turned her attention to Max.
“Max? Can we talk? Privately?” Tess asked.
“No Tess, we can’t.” Max replied. There was no way in hell he was going anywhere with her alone.
“Well, okay …” Tess conceded, looking at the rest of the group who were staring her down, wondering whether she wanted to say what she needed to in front of everyone. She decided she did.
“Max. I just wanted to say … you were my best work.”
“That was your best?” Max replied scathingly.
Tess didn’t have a reply, but looked defeated. Before she turned to go, Max could see the tears well up in her eyes. For a moment he regretted saying what he did. He had never seen her look so vulnerable in front of him before – well, when she wasn’t acting anyway.
“Tess, wait.” He said, wanting to apologise, but Tess pulled away and ran out of the room. He hesitated for a moment before going after her.
The group looked in shock, none more so than Liz. Max was going after Tess? Hell had actually frozen over and all the damned were wearing ice skates.
“Nice going bodyguard.” Maria said, referring to Michael’s great skills at protecting Liz from Tess.
“Have you got a problem?” Michael retorted.
“I’m just saying …” Maria began.
“So … Liz.” Alex began, wanting to prevent World War III, as well as draw everyone’s attention away from the door Max and Tess had just disappeared through. “When are we going to get to hear you sing?”
“When hell freezes over… Damn, that has already happened. Okay, in that case, definitely not until I’ve had a lot more to drink.” Liz replied, making her way to the bar and ordering a cosmopolitan.
“Michael? What about you?” Alex grinned.
Michael gave him a look which made Alex drop the grin.
“Oh, Maria. I haven’t told you how great you were up there.” Alex said, referring to her debut that they had yet to comment on, thanks to Tess’ performance. “I knew you would be though.”
“Thanks Alex.” Maria said, again looking pointedly at Michael, who hadn’t yet said anything to her.
“So when you get the deal, you’ll put in a good word for your old buddy Alex won’t you?” Alex hinted, putting an arm around her.
“Maybe …
if I get the deal.” Maria stressed the word ‘if’. Nothing was certain yet.
“Consider it done.” Phil said, startling Maria by appearing from behind her. “That was fantastic. I’m assuming there’s more where that came from?”
“Absolutely.” Maria promised.
“In that case. Here’s my card. Set up a time with my assistant and we’ll start working through some details.” Phil said, handing Maria his card.
“I will. Thank you so much for this opportunity.” Maria gushed.
“No problem. I’m looking forward to working with you. Just promise me something…” Phil began.
“Anything.” Maria replied.
“Get up there a few more times tonight. Someone has to save us from more of what we just heard.” Phil smiled, referring to Tess’ singing debut.
“I think I can do that.” Maria smiled. “Thanks again.”

Meanwhile, Max was in the lobby with Tess …
“Tess. Wait up.” Max called out. Tess stopped and turned around. Tears were streaming down her face.
“Look. I’m sorry for what I said.” Max apologised.
“That was my grand gesture Max. I don’t know what else I can do to make you see how much I love you.” Tess replied.
“There’s nothing you can do. It’s over.” Max explained.
“It can’t be! What we had was something special. Something like that doesn’t disappear so easily.”
“If it was so damn special, why did you sleep with him?” Max demanded.
“We’ve been through this. I was lonely. I shouldn’t have done it, and I’m sorry.” Tess apologised.
“It’s not enough Tess.”
“Just give me one more chance. We can go back to how we were.” Tess begged.
“We can’t go back Tess. It’s too late.” Max replied.
“Tell me what to do. I’ll do anything.” Tess pleaded. “We can get back to that place.”
“No Tess, we can’t.” Max replied, starting to regret his decision to follow Tess out here. “And I don’t want to.”
“It’s because of
her, isn’t it?” Tess said, her demeanour instantly changing from being repentant, to being accusing.
“
She has a name. And yes – I love her.”
“You only just met her. You don’t know anything about her.” Tess retorted.
“I know more about her than I ever knew about you. She lets me in. With you … most of the time I don’t even know if you’re showing me the real you or if it is all an act.”
Tess looked at him with tears welling up in her eyes.
“See, there…” Max began, “is that you, or are you putting on a show to get me to feel sorry for you?”
“Would it make a difference?” Tess asked. “Would it make you come back to me?”
“No. But it may make me despise you a little less.” Max admitted.
Tess visibly flinched at hearing how Max really felt about her.
“You weren’t the perfect boyfriend either you know.” Tess retorted.
“But I didn’t cheat on you.” Max replied. “That’s the difference.”
“Well, if you had of been there for me when I needed you, I wouldn’t have needed to.” Tess replied.
“If you had let me in and told me how you were feeling, instead of acting as your usual high-and-might self-sufficient self, I would have known what you needed.”
“Well, I’m telling you now.” Tess replied.
“And I’m telling you that you’re too late. I don’t feel that way about you anymore… I’m not sure that I ever did.”
“You did … I know you did.”
“I may have thought I did, but to tell you the truth, I never really understood what real love was until I met Liz.”
Tess flinched for the second time, before impulsively lunging towards Max and kissing him on the lips.
“What the hell are you doing?” Max demanded, pushing Tess off of him.
“Trying to break that spell that she’s obviously got you under. You don’t love her – you love me!” Tess screamed.
“You’re insane!” Max replied. “From now on, I want you to stay away from me.”
“That’s going to be a little difficult isn’t it, with the two of us going away to Vancouver together for three months, seeing each other on the set every day, not to mention having adjoining hotel rooms…” Tess said, running her finger down the length of Max’s folded arms.
“We may be in the same movie together, but if you so much as come near me without it being required for the purpose of filming or promoting this movie, I will seek a restraining order.”
“And risk having that come out in the press? You wouldn’t do it. You hate publicity.” Tess tried to call his bluff.
“Not as much as I hate you at this minute.” Max replied, before storming out of the lobby, leaving a screaming Tess in his wake.

Maria had finished talking to Phil, and was about to head to the bar to join Liz, when she heard a familiar voice over the microphone.
“Hi everyone. I want to dedicate this song to my girlfriend. Maria – I wrote this one for you.” Michael said, looking into the lights trying to see Maria in the crowd.
Maria spun around to see Michael standing at the microphone, and Alex up the back with a keyboard and drum machine. Once the music kicked in, Maria was speechless.
Well another bad day's gone by
Another day of being angry
Never known a person who could spend so much time being mad at me
And I didn't mean to get here late, my car ran out of gas
and then a plane crashed into the road and I had to save the people
Didn't think you'd get so mad, but here we go
here we go again
Maria’s jaw feel open, which she hadn’t noticed until Liz shut it for her.
“Wow. I didn’t know Michael could sing. Surprised?” Liz asked.
“Understatement.” Maria replied.
Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again
Well I'm glad that you calmed down
Never thought I'd ever see you smile after your head spun around
and you spit all that green stuff out on me
No, I can't go to the mall
That really sucks you know how much I love to wait while you change again
and again and again and again and again
Didn't mean to let you down, but here we go
here we go again
The audience was in fits of laughter, well, everyone except Maria. The male members of the audience particularly saw the funny side.
Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again
Well, I'm really sorry that - that I made you mad again
That doesn't really mean I'm sorry
Cause it's really not my fault that you're over reacting
here we go, here we go
“So I guess this is why Michael has been spending so much time with Alex lately.” Liz pointed out.
“Yeah, I guess so…” Maria nodded, but kept all of her attention on Michael.
Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again
Your face cramps and you make a frown, then you make a whiny sound
and it won't be long till we both reach ground zero so here we go again
And I know you didn't get your way, and now I guess you want to fight all day
I better watch out what I say, well don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again. Yeah
Don't look now cause here we go again
Don't look now cause here we go again
The song ended, and the audience was on their feet with a standing ovation. Michael gave a bow before making a quick exit. Alex took a little longer to leave the stage, giving bow after bow until the next singers had to drag him off stage so they could have a turn.
As Michael headed down the steps he saw Maria at the bottom.
“I know what you’re going to say …” Michael began with the excuses.
“Michael.” Maria interrupted, so he stopped, waiting for the screaming to begin.
“You wrote that for me?” Maria asked.
“Yeah…?” Michael replied hesitantly.
Maria threw herself at Michael giving him a massive hug.
“You’re not mad?” Michael asked, confused.
“Are you kidding? No one has ever taken the time to write a song for me before.” Maria gushed.
“Oh… cool.” Michael said, wondering how his song had managed to put him in the good, rather than bad books. Maria was one confusing girl.
“We should write together sometime. You, me and Alex … Can you imagine it?” Maria said, already planning it in her head.
“Yeah … sure.” Michael replied, getting less enthused by the minute. What had he gotten himself into?
* * * * *
“Hey.” Max said, taking a seat next to Liz at the bar.
“Hey! You’re back.” Liz replied, trying to smother the little green monster that was attempting to rear its ugly head.
“Sorry about that.” Max said, not really sure what Liz was thinking about his little disappearance with Tess.
“It’s okay.” Liz said unconvincingly, as she took the cosmo that the barmen had just handed to her.
“How many of those have you had?” Max asked, seeing the empty glasses that the barmen was clearing from them.
“Not nearly enough.” Liz replied, taking a gulp.
“Are you okay?” Max asked hesitantly.
“I’m fine.” Liz replied, a little too enthusiastically.
“Do you want to ask me something?” Max asked, wanting to make sure that Liz didn’t think anything was going on with him and Tess.
“No. You don’t need to tell me anything.” Liz replied. “I trust you Max.”
“Okay …” Max replied disbelievingly. “Then why are you trying to drink your weight in alcohol?”
Liz blushed. She hadn’t really noticed how much she had had to drink.
“Well … because I don’t trust
her.” Liz admitted.
“I don’t love her Liz. You know that right?” Max asked.
“With a voice like that, I don’t blame you?” Liz joked, trying to lighten the conversation, and her mood.
Max wasn’t convinced by her sudden carefree attitude, but their conversation ended when Maria came to drag Liz up on stage. Surprisingly, Liz didn’t resist too hard. Max wondered if that was a sign of how desperate she was to end their discussion.
“What are we going to sing?” Liz asked once they reached the stage. She had been glad to have an excuse to stop talking about Tess, but now that she was on stage she was feeling nervous. What would possess her to agree to sing in front of a crowd?
“You remember the one we wrote about Billy?” Maria asked.
“How could I forget…” Liz said with a smile, knowing she could pull this song off.
“Ladies and Gentlemen.” Maria said into the microphone. “Liz and I would like to sing for you a little number we wrote about an old friend of ours from back home.”
Maria began strumming slowly on the guitar, her voice soon coming in with the intro.
You’re a little obsessed with me, I’m a little bit scared of you
The way you look and stare at me, maybe its time I let you know
The strumming rocked up a little, and Liz came in with the chorus.
You can call me six times, but still I won't pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me, but still I say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
'Cause I always thought you were gay
Liz’s singing wasn’t too bad. She wasn’t going to get a record deal like Maria, but it was acceptable compared to the other people who had graced the karaoke stage that evening. Well, it wasn’t hard. Everyone was better compared to Tess’ effort.
The guitar dropped back to a slow rhythm again, and Maria’s melodical voice came back in.
Every time you come around
You just look me up and down
And then you try to hold my hand
I’m confused and I don’t understand
Liz came back in with the chorus, and Maria kicked the stool away so she and Liz could jump around the stage.
You can call me six times but still I wont pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me but still I'll say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
‘Cause I always thought you were gay
Maria’s voice came in for the bridge, but the tempo didn’t drop as it had for the verses.
You told me lies and made me believe
It would be fine if there was nothing to see
I’d be undressing in front of you
I told you secrets that no one else knew
“Any idea who Billy is?” Max asked Michael.
“No idea… But if I ever see him, I’m going to kick his arse.” Michael replied, taking a swig of beer.
“Ditto.” Max replied.
You can call me six times but I still wont pick up the phone,
You can spend all your money on me, but still I say no
You can write a million letters everyday, confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
‘Cause I always thought you were gay

Later that night, Liz was at Max’s house, helping him pack his bags for his flight the next day.
“You don’t have to do this you know.” Max said, feeling bad that it was 2am and Liz had to be up early the next day for the breakfast shift.
“Every waking moment, remember?” Liz replied. “Anyway, I’m not going to see you for three months. I want to soak up as much of you as I can.”
“Come here then.” Max said, using t-shirt he was holding in his hands to wrap around her waist and pull her towards him for a kiss.
“Mmmm.” Liz replied, licking her lips after it was over, as if salivating for more.
“I’m going to miss you.” Liz said.
“I’m going to miss you too.” Max replied. “But it’ll go fast – you’ll see.”
“Promise you won’t forget about me…” Liz said, leaning her cheek against his chest, and wrapping her arms around his waist.
“That’s not even possible.” Max replied.
They stood there for a moment, until Liz suddenly pulled back and looked at Max in the eyes.
“There’s something I want to do.” Liz said.
“What’s that?” Max asked, wondering what put the glint in her eye.
“This.” Liz replied, kissing Max and gradually pulling him down onto the bed. As their make-out session became heavier, Liz’s hands moved towards the end of Max’s shirt, which she pulled over Max’s head and threw to the corner of the room. They continued kissing, but when Max felt Liz’s hand reach for the button of his jeans, he immediately pulled away.
“Liz … wait.” Max said, taking her hand away.
Liz looked at him as if in shock, and then quickly sat up.
“I have to go.” She said, pushing Max off of her, grabbing her jacket and running from the room.
“Liz, wait!” Max called, taking off after her. He caught her at the front door. “Where are you going?”
“I have to go. It’s late. I have work tomorrow.” She babbled.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Max apologised, worried that he hadn’t stopped what they were doing early enough. He didn’t want her to feel pressured into doing anything she wasn’t ready to do.
“You didn’t.” Liz replied, but her voice wasn’t convincing. She turned to leave.
“Please don’t leave like this.” Max begged, grabbing her by the arm.
“Please don’t make me stay.” Liz pleaded in return.
Max relaxed his grip on her arm and reluctantly dropped his arm away from her. She tried not to see the pained expression on his face as she turned to leave.
“I love you.” Max whispered before she walked through the door. She looked at him for a second with an apologetic look on her face, before closing the door behind her.
Max lent against the door and slid to the ground. Burying his head in his hands he wondered how he had managed to ruin everything with in such a short amount of time.
