It was very shocking and sad to hear about his death. I mean all these years he's worked with dangerous animals and to die from a sting ray? It just doesn't make sense. But it just proves no matter how much you are around animals and you feel like they won't hurt you. They can and they will. I hope his wife and children are doing ok. :(

From what I've read the barbs on a stingray can get up to ten inches long. That's more than long enough to reach your heart and hit it just like any knife would.

It was just an unlucky shot that hit him in the chest and heart. And even more unlucky that it slipped between two ribs instead of hitting one of them.

Yeah, I never thought it'd be something like this, either. Actually, I never really thought about it. I figured he'd survive to be a grandparent and retire.

Stingrays are dangerous...but it's incredibly rare. According to a news article I read, it's one of only three or four reported accidents.

Anyone remember his bit in Dr Dolittle 2?

They're only dangerous if they feel threatened, apparently the the cameraman was in front of the stingray and Steve above it (not touching it or anything) and it felt cornered. Unfortunately Steve was in the line of fire and the barb went straight through his chest.

I'm glad no one has made stupid jokes here, he was a wonderful person with such enthusiasm for life and family.

I used to watch him with my parents when I was younger, and it just breaks my heart! And his poor children, they're so little!

Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom,
Man made up a story, said that I should believe him.
Go and tell your white knight that he’s handsome in hindsight,
But I don’t want the next best thing.
So I sing, I hold my head down, and I break these walls ’round me.
Can’t take no more of your fairytale love.
