Christmas Eve Night

“So what will it be? Santa Claus 3 or Elf?” Isabel asked the occupants of the living room.

After a massive traditional Evans feast, which was slightly strained from the events of the day, everyone had gathered in the lounge room to watch a video. Outside the weather had turned and there was even a slight possibility that it might snow that year.

“You’re kidding right?” Michael asked over the choices Isabel was offering him.

Isabel narrowed her eyes at her older brother, “No I’m not Michael, so which one will it be?”

The decision was put on hold when there was a quiet knock on the door and the Evans family all looked at each other in surprise.

“I’ll get it,” Isabel offered and headed off.

She pulled the door open and her mouth fell open in shock when she saw the face grinning back at her from the other side.

“Hi Isabel,” Alex Whitman grinned. He was holding a wrapped present under one arm, and a bottle of wine in the other.

“Alex! What are you doing here?” She asked.

Alex’s smile wavered a little then. “Oh I ran into Michael and Maria last night and they invited me,” he informed her.

“They did?”

“Yeah,” he nodded but when he could see the look on face he realised that this was the first she had heard of it. “Oh God Isabel, I’m so sorry. This wasn’t your idea at all was it…?”

Isabel shook her head.

“I’m so embarrassed,” he whispered. He held out his hands with the present and bottle of wine then. “Here, Merry Christmas,” he said shoving them into her hands and quickly stepping back.

When he had run into Michael the night before he had been surprised to be introduced to Maria, who was apparently Max’s girlfriend. Alex had been amused at the idea of the loud Maria with a quiet guy like Max; she seemed much more like Michael’s type. He was even further surprised when after being introduced to Maria that she seemed to know who he was, and when Michael had gone to the bar Maria had told him that she had heard all about him from Isabel. He couldn’t believe some of the things he was hearing from Maria so when she had suggested that he come by after dinner on Christmas Eve, and insisted Isabel was looking forward to seeing him, he had instantly accepted. He shouldn’t have known that someone as beautiful and smart as Isabel Evans wouldn’t be interested in a geek like him.

“No Alex stop,” Isabel called out stepping onto the porch.

Alex halted his steps and turned back.

“Please come in,” she smiled shyly.

“Are you sure?” He asked.

“Positive, we were just about to watch a video. You can help us decide which one,” she smiled.

Alex smiled back then. “Ok,” he agreed and followed her into the house.

***

“Did you get flights?” Liz asked Maria as she got off the phone.

Liz had been reluctant to agree to fly home on Christmas Eve. At this rate, they would spend their entire Christmas day just flying home to New York.

“No not until tomorrow morning,” she sighed. “What are we going to do now?”

Liz felt bad; it was obvious that Maria was hurting despite her best efforts to pretend that she wasn’t.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Liz asked.

Maria sat down. “There isn’t much to say. Its over,” she shrugged.

“How do you feel about that?” Liz asked. She didn’t want to seem like she was psycho analysing Maria but she thought it would help to get it off her chest.

Maria thought about what Liz was saying. “Truthfully I don’t know,” she admitted. “It hurt when Max told me it wasn’t going to work because we’re too different but the more I think about it the more I think he’s right.”

“Really?” Liz asked surprised, and a little hopeful.

“Yeah,” she nodded. “And lets face it the only person in his family I actually liked was Michael,” she added.

Liz quirked her head to the side then, “Michael hey?” She asked.

Maria blushed, “Yeah he’s pretty cool.”

Liz grinned, “Oh my God. You’ve got a thing for Michael don’t you?” She accused. It made sense now, why Maria had taken the break with Max so well.

“No!” Maria lied but her denial was useless as her face gave her away too Liz.

“You know it’s ok if you do. I mean I think Michael is a much better match for you,” Liz admitted.

“It’s too weird. I mean before I came here to meet the Evans I thought for sure that I was in love with Max, I even told him but now…”

“It’s ok, I can see why you would want to be in love with Max,” Liz replied.

Maria narrowed her eyes at Liz then who had looked away uncomfortably.

“Liz?” She questioned.

When Liz looked back, there were tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she immediately apologised.

“What for?” Maria asked. But when she looked into Liz’s eyes again she knew.

“Liz are you in love with Max?” She asked her.

“What? No of course not. I mean I hardly know him,” she shook her head.

But Maria wasn’t buying her story. “But you want too don’t you?” She guessed.

“I’m sorry Maria I didn’t mean for this to happen,” Liz sobbed.

“For what? For me and Max to break up because we both finally realised what everyone else knew all along?” She chuckled.

It had taken Max to say the words for her to finally accept what she had known since their very first date. Liz was right; Max Evans was the type of man you wanted to be in love with but in Maria’s case wanting just wasn’t enough. She could love him easily yes, but they’re relationship lacked one of the most important components, passion.

In truth the realisation had probably come to Maria during the night she had spent with Michael but she hadn’t wanted to admit it because that would mean once again her relationship was doomed to fail and she was really tired at failing in relationships.

“We kissed,” Liz blurted out.

Maria’s eyes went wide; she hadn’t expected to hear that.

“When?”

“Last night, after you had walked off on him.”

Maria just stared at her sister for a few seconds before she just broke out in laughter.

“You’re laughing?” Liz asked in disbelief.

Maria stopped then and just smiled. “I’m sorry I just find this whole thing hilarious. I was crying this morning because I thought I’d cheated on Max with Michael and now I’m all confused about my feelings for Michael and you’ve developed feelings for Max.”

“You’re not angry with me?” Liz asked.

“No,” Maria shook her head.

“Thank you,” Liz whispered.

“No thank you,” Maria said. “You’re always there when I need you, I don’t know what I’d do with you,” she whispered.

“Me either,” Liz agreed.

***

Max smiled as he watched his sister come alight in happiness as Alex told another one of his corny jokes. He had never really thought of Alex as Isabel’s type but now that he saw them together he had to admit that they were perfect for each other. Now Isabel just needed to admit it.

But watching Isabel and Alex made his thoughts turn to Liz. Would he look as happy as Isabel if he were with Liz right now?

***

On the other side of the room Michael was having similar thoughts to Max, but he was thinking about Maria.

He hadn’t been surprised that Max and Maria had broken up regardless of him coming clean about the events of their night together. But he had been surprised at how happy he had been about it. If you had asked him two days ago what he thought of Maria he would have told you that she was an uptight New York socialite who should learn to keep her mouth shut, but now…

***

Isabel smiled shyly as she walked Alex to the door.

“Well thank you very much for tonight…” he turned and smiled goofily at her.

“No thank you, it was really nice to have you here tonight,” she replied.

“Really?” Alex asked surprised.

“Yeah,” she grinned. “Remind me to thank Maria next time I see her.”

“Ok,” he nodded. “It’s a shame that her and Max decided to call it quits before Christmas. I was looking forward to seeing her again and meeting her sister.”

Isabel nodded, “Yeah,” she agreed, “A couple of days ago I couldn’t wait to see the back of her but now that her and Liz are gone, and on their way back to New York, Max just isn’t himself.”

“You know I’m still surprised that Maria wasn’t Michael’s girlfriend, she just seemed like his type.”

Isabel smiled at the comment, she hadn’t given it much thought but now that Alex had pointed it out she could see it.

Alex opened the door then and stepped through, “I really think it just might snow,” he commented.

“I hope so,” Isabel smiled.

“Well goodnight Isabel Evans,” he said.

Feeling confident Isabel stepped forward and leaned in until her lips were pressed against Alex’s for a brief second.

“Goodnight Alex Whitman,” she whispered.

Alex stood speechless for a few minutes before he finally walked down the Evans porch and to his car.

Once he was safely inside, Isabel closed the door and leaned against it with a big grin.

“You and Alex, who would have thought?” Max shook his head and smiled at his sister as he leaned against the doorframe.

“He’s a really nice guy,” Isabel replied.

“You’re right, he is. I’m really happy for you,” Max smiled.

“You know what Max? I realised something tonight, you don’t always get to choose who you love, sometimes loves just chooses you,” she said softly and gave him a knowing look before walking past him and heading up the stairs towards her bedroom leaving Max to think about what she said.

NUNARFEATHEROO - well Maria and Liz are steps in this fic, and although it might be weird i guess its the same when bf do it
tequathisy - i just decided not to write Maria as a hypocrit, like Max was being. She might not have slept with Michael but she definetely tried until she passed out. Max and Maria both just wanted to be in love with each other. Maria because Max was a nice guy, and Max because Maria wasn't like the other girls he dated who always dumped him for something else.

OrangeSky - i don't think i could make him a baddy even if i tried
nibbles2 - Isabel and the Evans family already apologised in an earlier part.

Twelve

“Merry Christmas,” Liz said to Maria as she handed her a beautifully wrapped present.

Maria smiled and took the present before turning to get Liz’s from her suitcase.

“Merry Christmas Lizzie,” she replied. “I’m sorry it’s not much because most of your gifts are in New York,” she tried to explain.

“Yours too, I just brought something small with me,” Liz shrugged.

It was barely six o’clock in the morning but the girls were both up because their taxi would be there any second to pick them up to take them to the airport.

“I’m sorry that this is how we’re spending Christmas,” Maria sighed as she carefully unwrapped her present.

“It’s ok,” Liz smiled not wanting to make Maria feel any worse than she already did.

Liz grinned when she opened the present and found a beautiful photo frame. All it needed was a new photo of her and Maria and it would be perfect.

“Thank you,” she told Maria.

“You’re welcome,” she shrugged.

Maria finished opening her own then and squealed when she found it was the latest DVD box set of Greys Anatomy, her favourite show. “How did you know that I’d need to see McDreamy so badly after this trip?”

Liz laughed, Maria had been a big fan of Greys since it started and an even bigger fan of McDreamy, she had even managed to suck Liz into the show somehow although Liz wouldn’t admit it. “A good guess,” she told her.

The taxi beeped its horn outside then so the girls grabbed their bags, or in Maria’s case as many as she could carry and opened the door. The wind was blowing outside and there were a few drops of snow fallen on the ground.

“God its cold,” Maria complained as she stepped out and handed the taxi driver her first bag.

“Yeah but who would have thought it would snow in Roswell?” Liz grinned.

Five minutes later the girls were both tucked into the back seat of the cab and on their way to the airport.

***

Max was a man on the mission.

“You can’t choose who you love”

Isabel’s words continued to run through Max’s mind the night before which resulted in next to no sleep. But instead of being tired and grumpy, Max was smiling as he made his way towards the tumbleweed hotel. He only hoped that he wasn’t too late.

The lady behind the reception desk smiled when he walked in. “Merry Christmas,” she said.

“Same to you,” Max replied. “I’m looking for Liz’s Parkers room,” he explained.

“Oh well unfortunately Ms Parker just checked out.”

“Oh. How long ago?” Max frowned.

“Only a couple of minutes ago hun, I saw the taxi pull up so if you hurry you might still be able to catch her,” she said.

“Thanks,” Max yelled over his shoulder as he ran out of the office.

He looked both ways when he reached outside and sure enough, there was a taxi parked outside one of the rooms, and Liz and Maria were both hopping into the back. Max didn’t have time to think he just took off in a dead run towards the taxi which was already beginning to pull out.

“Liz, Maria wait,” he called out as he continued to chase but it was to no avail as the taxi continued to drive on, the girls unaware of his presence.

“Shit,” Max cried as he finally gave up and slowed down. He couldn’t believe he had been so close to them only to miss them at the last second.

He took a few seconds to get his breath back before it occurred to him that he still had a chance to reach them; that they would be heading to the airport. He jogged back to his car then and quickly pulled out onto the road heading for the airport.

***

“Where’s Max?” Zan asked as he and Ava joined the rest of the Evans family in the living room.

All eyes in the room turned to Isabel. “Why is everyone looking at me?” She asked.

“Well firstly because he’s your twin and secondly because very little gets past you.”

Isabel huffed; “Fine,” she told them. “I heard him leave about an hour ago; we had a little chat last night so I think he might be going to see Liz.”

“Liz?” Ava questioned.

Zan smiled, “I wondered how long it would take him to realise.”

“To realise what?” Michael asked confused.

He was glad that his parents and Ava seemed to be just as confused as he was as to why Max would have gone to see Liz.

“That Liz is perfect for him,” Zan answered.

“But we barely know her,” Ava pointed out.

“I know but you don’t have to know her that well to see it,” Isabel explained. “You just have to look at them together; they’re perfect for each other. Plus they’ve already kissed.”

“What!” Michael asked. “But what about Maria?”

Isabel held her hands out in defence, “Don’t shoot the messenger Michael, all I know is what Max told me and what he didn’t tell me and that wasn’t much about Maria.”

Inwardly though Isabel was also smiling because going from Michael’s reaction to the information about Max and Liz, he did in fact have feelings for Maria.

“Well should we wait for him?” Phillip asked.

“Yeah let’s have breakfast,” Dianne replied getting up and heading into the kitchen.

***

“Which way?” Maria asked Liz as they entered the small airport where they were catching the plane.

“This way I think,” Liz gestured towards a desk with an attendant who appeared to be checking some passengers in.

“How can there be so many people travelling from Roswell on Christmas Day?” Maria groaned as she noticed the line had at least 20 people on it.

Liz just smiled at her sister. “Just be thankful or we won’t be flying at all,” she replied.

“True,” Maria nodded and settled into line next to Liz.

***

“Yes,” Max cheered when he found a park almost right away at the airport. He hadn’t been able to travel too quickly to the airport because of the weather but even so, he still figured he couldn’t be more than ten minutes behind the taxi Maria and Liz were in.

Getting out of the car, he began to jog towards the building. Once inside though he realised it might not be as easy to locate them as he hoped. There were a surprising number of people inside, lining up to check in and seated in huddles waiting for their flights to be called.

His eyes scanned the people seated as he began to walk towards the line of people checking in for their flights.

***

“Your flight will be departing from gate 2 in approximately half an hour. Enjoy flying Virgin,” the attendant smiled at Liz as she handed her the ticket.

Liz didn’t have any bags to check in so he simply picked up her carry on size bag and moved out of the line to make room for Maria.

***

Max was starting to panic as he neared the line. He couldn’t see either Liz or Maria anywhere and he was wondering if they had been coming to the airport at all. He was just about to continue to the other end of the airport when someone stepped out of the line and in front of him.

He immediately recognised her long chocolate hair and he smiled.

“Liz,” he breathed out in a whisper.

Liz froze when she heard her name on the lips of a voice she knew she would recognise anywhere. She may have only known him a few days but that was long enough for her to imprint every detail of him, including his husky voice, into her brain.
She turned slowly afraid she might be dreaming. Her mouth opened and she was about to speak before Maria beat her to it.

“Max? What are you doing here?” She asked stepping next to Liz.

Max hadn’t forgotten about Maria for that mere second he was staring at Liz.

“Maria,” he said.

Liz’s head fell. It was obvious what Max was doing there. He realised what a mistake he had made breaking up with Maria and he had come to beg her forgiveness.

“I’ll just leave you too it,” she whispered and began to walk away.

Maria watched Liz for a second before turning back to Max. “What are you doing here?” She asked.

“I…I,” Max didn’t know what to say.

Maria was as surprised as Liz to see Max. She had never expected him to come after her.

“Shouldn’t you be at home with your family for Christmas?” She asked.

“I had to stop you from leaving,” He finally found his voice but his eyes kept drifting to Liz who was now standing to the side trying to appear not to be watching them.

“Oh Max that’s really sweet…” Maria began thinking it would be best to let him down gently.

“I couldn’t let you leave like this without telling her…” he began to ramble.

“Wait a second who are you talking about?” Maria asked confused.

Max looked at her guiltily then before turning his eyes to Liz. Maria watched as his expression changed, softened until he was looking at Liz so adoringly that her heart literally ached in jealously. It was stupid, she knew that her and Max breaking up was for the best, but to see the look of pure love in his eyes made her jealous because that was how she wanted someone to look at her.

“I’m sorry,” he immediately apologised.

“Its ok,” Maria smiled. “Go on,” she said to him and gestured to where Liz was standing.

“Thanks Maria,” Max smiled.

***

Liz tried her hardest not to watch them. She knew that mostly likely Maria was letting Max down gently at that very second but it still didn’t stop it from hurting.

So intent on trying not to cry, and avoiding looking at Max, Liz failed to notice him coming towards her until he was right in front of her.

“Liz?” Max whispered.

Liz’s head snapped up in surprise until their eyes met and that was all Max needed to know that this was right, that putting his heart on the line was the best chance he had ever taken. So he smiled.

“I’m sorry about you and Maria,” she blurted out.

“I’m not,” Max continued to smile. “I’m not sorry that I met her or dated her, or even that we broke up,” he shrugged. “You know why?” He asked.

Liz shook her head.

Reaching out Max caressed her face gently. “Because I met you,” he whispered.

“Wha…?” Liz asked confused. “But I thought you were here to stop Maria?”

“No Liz,” he shook his head and stepped even closer. “I’m here to ask you if you would come home with me and spend Christmas with me and my family?” He smiled.

Liz’s gaze snapped towards Maria then who was still standing near the check out line, her bags at her feet and smiling at her sister. She gave Liz a thumbs up then, and Liz felt her heart surge. “Thank you,” she mouthed to her.

“You really think your family would like me?” She teased him.

Max grinned at her. “I have a feeling they’re going to love you.”

He leaned in slowly then waiting for any objection from Liz but when none came, he slowly pressed his lips against her. Liz sighed into his mouth and sunk into the kiss, her hands reaching up to wrap around his neck as she returned his kiss.

It wasn’t until Maria cleared her throat that they reluctantly pulled apart. “Hate to interrupt you love birds but Liz our flight will be boarding soon.”

Liz looked to Max then to Maria. She really wanted to go with Max, to share Christmas with him and maybe starting one of the best things to happen to her but she didn’t want to abandon her sister, especially on Christmas day.

Looking at Max, she bit her bottom lip.

Max understood immediately. “Actually Maria there has been a change in plans if that’s ok with you,” he smiled. “You and Liz will be spending Christmas with me,” he told her.

“Really?” Liz asked hopefully.

“Really,” Max smiled. “Besides I think I know someone who will be really happy about it,” he added giving Maria look that told her he was referring to Michael.

“Ok then, what are we waiting for?” Maria grinned, “Let’s stop wasting our Christmas.”

***

Then Evans were just finishing breakfast when they heard the front door open.

Isabel quickly rushed out towards the door and she smiled when she saw Max.

“Merry Christmas,” she said.

Max returned her smile, but brighter. “Merry Christmas Iz,” he told her.

The rest of the Evans family walked out then joining Isabel in the hallway near the stairs. “I hope you don’t mind but I brought a couple of people to spend Christmas with us,” he informed his family.

He stepped aside then and allowed Maria first, and then Liz to enter the house.

The Evans family waited anxiously to hear what was going on.

“Of course that’s fine honey, welcome back Maria, Liz,” Dianne Evans smiled. She had decided whomever her son chose to be with that she would support him this time around.

Michael watched and waited for some type of indication to tell him what was going on and get got it when Max opened his arm up and pulled Liz into the safety of his arms.

The Evans family all shared secret smiles. “Let’s open some presents,” Phillip Evans declared and one by one everyone followed him into the living room until it was only Maria and Michael standing awkwardly.

“So Liz and Max?” Michael asked.

“Yeah, they make a much better couple,” Maria smiled.

Michael couldn’t help but return Maria’s smile with one of his own, “Merry Christmas Blondie.”

“Merry Christmas Michael,” Maria replied before she followed everyone into the living room.

There is only an epilogue to follow and its short.

Epilogue

“Does that look alright?” Maria asked Isabel anxiously.

Isabel smiled at the shorter blonde standing next to her. They had certainly come a long way since last Christmas when they had first met. She would never have thought Maria would be standing next to her this Christmas decorating the Evans family tree, but here they were.

“It’s fine,” she promised.

“So what time is Alex getting here?” Maria asked.

Isabel looked at her watch and smiled as she thought of boyfriend whom she hadn’t seen since Thanksgiving. She knew she had Maria to thank for bringing him back into her life last Christmas Eve, and she would be forever grateful for that.

“He should be here in an hour,” she smiled.

“So things are still good with the two of you?” Maria asked curiously. Maria and Isabel had formed a type of friendship in the last twelve months but Isabel was still a private person and she was shy about talking about her relationship with Alex.

“Yeah, it’s hard doing the long distance thing but we only have another six months and we’ll both be finished with school.”

“Yeah, the long distance thing is hard,” Maria agreed.

The conversation was halted from going any further when the front door opened. “We’re here,” the couple chorused as they placed their bags by their feet.

The sounds of footsteps could be heard all over the house as the Evans family all rushed to greet the latest arrivals.

“You’re here! We were worried you wouldn’t make it,” Isabel grinned as her and Maria, being the closest, beat everyone to the door.

“We didn’t think we would either for a second but we’re here,” Max grinned.

“How was Paris?” Maria asked enviously.

Liz’s grin only brightened at the mention of her now favourite city. “Spectacular,” she sighed and sunk further into Max’s side as he wrapped an arm around her.

“Okay everyone move back and let them a little further into the house,” Phillip chuckled.

They all made their way into the living room then and Max took a seat on an armchair before pulling Liz onto his lap.

Maria stared at her sister with a smile. She had never seen Liz look as happy as she was, there was something inside of her that just glowed and when Maria looked down she saw exactly what that was and she gasped.

“Maria what?” Michael asked from the other side of the room.

Liz smiled when she realised her sister had spotted the new addition to her finger.

“When? Why didn’t you tell us?” She demanded.

Liz giggled and turned to Max. “I think we’ve been found out,” she told him.

“Bound to happen sooner or later,” he replied.

“What’s going on?” Zan asked. He had his sleeping son in his arms and was doing his best to try to keep him asleep.

“Well Liz and I have some good news,” he said. “We got engaged in Paris.”

The room erupted then with happiness over the news and tears as baby Jake was woken.

***

On the other side of the room Dianne Evans sat with a content smile on her face next to her husband, a man that she had loved and been married to for the past 30 years.

“Looks like you have a wedding to help plan,” Phillip whispered.

Dianne had known it wouldn’t be long before her youngest son proposed to his girlfriend. He had asked her for the ring again at Thanksgiving and this time she had no hesitation in giving it to him, knowing with complete confidence that he was indeed in love and happy.

He and Liz had never looked back since they had gotten together last Christmas. Liz had settled back down into school and a few months into their relationship, they had gotten an apartment together.

“I’m so happy for them,” Dianne smiled and looked up at her husband.

Her eyes drifted to her older son then, Michael, who was standing with his arms around Maria as she, Liz and Isabel talked animatedly about Liz’s engagement ring.

Dianne would never have picked them as a couple but now that they were together she saw what everyone else did. Maria complimented Michael with her outgoing and vibrant personality whilst Michael complimented Maria by keeping her level headed and real. They made a beautiful couple. Right now, they were struggling to have a relationship living in two different cities but Dianne knew that the distance was only a minor thing and they would work it out very soon.

“Maybe it wont be so long until we have another either,” Phillip smiled as he also watched the other couple.

“Do you know what I wish for Phillip?” Dianne looked up at him.

“What’s that sweetheart?”

“That our children get to experience even one third of the happiness I have being married to you,” she said.

Phillip kissed his wife gently then and squeezed her hand. Their children were all under one roof again, a rarity these days and they had news to share with them.

“I think my news can wait,” she whispered tearily.

Phillip agreed with a nod.

Today was a day to be happy. Today was a day for family, and they were family. The Family Evans.
