Chapter 7

Liz kept glancing toward Josef as he and Mick quietly spoke. She’d removed herself from the conversation and room, needing breathing space. She could only assume they were speaking of her, their almost fight and her breakdown afterwards.

Mick’s memories were crowding her brain, and before she’d clamped it down there had been a flood of them from Josef too, yet, strangely, he hadn’t said a word about it. So either the connection was one sided or he was being his usual closed off self.

She’d learned that much about him from the images she’s received. That and he was much older then Mick, hundreds of years older, in fact. He also had a level of control she could only continue to strive toward. Of course being a Vampire and a changed human were to entirely different things, and she wasn’t even sure she could be classified as Human anymore.

She was turning into someone she didn’t know, something she couldn’t trust. There was so much inside her that ached in a way that she could barely describe. There were moments; the ones where she was losing herself, that her skin was to tight, it crawled, burned and itched. She wanted to score it with her nails, peel it off and set what ever was living in her, free. She wanted to run away, she also wanted to find Max and curse him for doing this to her.

For the first time Liz was afraid of herself; everything she was, what she was becoming…the mere thought of voicing her fears terrified her and how could she explain that to anyone?

She loathed that fear, it was a prison and one of her own creation, but that didn’t make it any less confining. Or easy to escape.

Kyle had understood to a point. His powers were negligible and honestly, she knew her situation terrified him. He didn’t want to be in her situation, and she didn’t blame him one bit.

Mick and Josef were completely different, from her and one another. Where one had embraced his nature, the other denied it. Yet, there was a deep affection between the two of them, and between their vast experiences there was something akin to hope creeping into her. They had changed violently too and still managed to hold on to themselves. If they could, so could she.

Maybe through them she could escape, learn to survive…better yet control this thing inside her and live her life again. Through them she could learn to live without fear. Liz shuddered, and an unbidden image of herself wrapped around the two of them in a way so sensual she would never had though it possible for her to imagine raced across her mind.

Her body wilted from the heat in what she saw; the need, the desire and she wondered if it was real or just product of whatever was going on with her body. Whatever it was, she longed for it to be a vision in the sickest most base way, because until that moment she’d never thought of Mick in a sexual way, and certainly not Josef either…Liz mentally called herself a liar the second she finished those thoughts.

Mick was a perfect specimen of manhood, and for that matter so was Josef. She was a healthy woman; she thought about them naked for at least six point five seconds, every few hours. To be even more honest, Mick, not Max was her first true crush even after she’d know he was a vampire. Hell, maybe even because, but she’d been fourteen at the time and him biting her had been a frequent fantasy.

Liz shook off those thoughts; the barrage of emotions was dangerous and could force her powers out of whack again, as it was the counter under her hands was discolored.

She wanted them both.

She could deal with that.

She could.

She was fucked, and not in the way she apparently wanted either.

Kyle shivered, the only warmth he could feel was centered in the coffee cup in his hands, and that didn’t permeate very far. He was lost, broke; he had no way of making money, or more importantly contacting Liz.

On the bright side, he wasn’t being chased by the Feds anymore.

Kyle slurped the dark, hot and sugar laden coffee and wracked his mind for a plan. He could hitch, but he didn’t know where to, and wandering aimlessly wouldn’t help him reconnect with Liz.

“Buddha, guide me.” He muttered aloud well scanning a map tacked to the wall.

“Brother, if you are weary, Buddha always provides.” Kyle turned to look toward the stranger speaking to him and had never been so relieved in his life.

“Brothers,” Kyle bowed his head in respect. The two monks looked at him curiously, but smiled widely and returned the bow. “I am indeed weary, and believe Buddha provides. He has, after all provided you in my time of need.”

The monks nodded in unison, “Come then, we will take you to a place of rest and you may restore your body and spirit. You will be able to sit at the feet of our master and he will grant you succor.”

Kyle grabbed his bag, and felt completely at ease, faith was always the way.

Chapter 8

Josef turned so he could watch Liz from the corner of his eye. The play of emotions running over her face was astonishing, almost as astonishing as Mick’s counter blackening under her tiny hands.

“Mick, if you don’t want to remodel your kitchen, you might want to go see what Liz is thinking about now.” His voice was dry and he felt he was exhibiting an amount of patience completely unseen before.

Mick looked over toward Liz and rushed to her side. His hand hovered at her shoulder for a moment before caressing her back. Josef watched his friend and knew that Mick was on love with her. Of course he would deny it. Mick was good at that, but his every action bespoke love, not just friendly concern. Jealousy surged through him. It was unfamiliar and ugly.

He hadn’t had cause to feel such a petty emotion in hundreds of years, and he didn’t like it one bit. It was also obvious he wasn’t getting Liz’s story out of them now, not with all the cooing and sighing going on.

With a disgusted sigh, Josef turned toward the door and quietly left. He was hungry and lonely. He didn’t want to admit it but he was, and watching Mick and Liz had made him see it. Right now he hated them for that.

Mick heard the door close and barely spared Josef a glance. There was too much going on; Liz’s memories, Josef’s odd behavior, plus he was generally confused by the way he felt about Liz.

“Liz?” He brushed her hair off her face with one hand and used the other to pry her hands from the counter.

She yanked her hands from his grasp, her eyes consumed with panic. “Don’t, I…I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Liz,” Mick stepped closer to her and took her hands back, and held them tightly, “you won’t.” He was desperate; he was driven by something he couldn’t understand. This slight, pale and entirely too young girl in front of him was invading his every thought. Her scent flooded his senses, overwhelming him.

“No, Mick…” Liz took a step back, she could feel her pulse flutter, her heart pounding so harshly she thought it would burst from her chest. She knew what he was going to do. Her body ached with need; she wanted him to kiss her but her mind knew she wasn’t ready for this. Not yet.

Mick put his hand on her waist, and slid his other up her arm, pulling her closer as he did. He could smell her blood, hear her heart, he wanted to taste her… every inch of her.

He reached up and cupped her cheek, leaned down and kissed her. He could feel her lips part under his, her breath against his lips as she made a tiny helpless sound and suddenly his mouth was on fire.

Liz jerked away, her hand flying to her mouth. “Oh…no…” She had burned Mick, as she watched his lips blister and peel. Appalled, she turned, her hair billowing out behind her like a whip as she ran from the room and out of the apartment. Leaving Mick stunned in her wake.

The office was loud, people on the phone yelling, computers turned to Buzznet, others wandering around chatting about the story of the moment and for the first time Beth felt disconnected from it all.

She’s had a lovely dinner with Ben, they’d laughed, joked, talked politics and there was an overwhelming sense of normalcy that she had enjoyed. She hadn’t thought of Mick once, but she had thought of Josh.

Ben was solid, warm and there were moments when he confused her because he seemed so like Josh, but at the same time he wasn’t him at all. And he was definitely nothing like Mick, yes there was that need to fix things and save people, but with Ben it wasn’t about atonement. It was just who he was.

Beth wondered, and not for the first time, if her attraction to Mick had been an aberration. The lure of the bad boy, so to speak.

She sat at her desk, turned her computer on and opened her mail. Junk leads, spam, and more dead ends. Beth clicked out the window and typed Elizabeth Parker into her search engine. Link after link appeared, and Beth religiously read everyone. It seemed Liz might be her latest story.

Chapter 9

Liz ran blindly out of the building and onto the street. She didn’t notice the cool sharp pavement, or the way it was cutting into her feet as she struggled to be anywhere but where Mick was.

She slowed down when the honking of a horn brought her out of her fugue, and she realized she had no idea where she was, or how she got there. Liz walked over toward a building and leaned against the wall. Her feet throbbed, her legs ached and she had a blinding headache.

It was also dawn, she had no idea how far she’d ran, no phone or money. She was lost.

“Liz?” She turned toward the semi-familiar voice and recognized Beth.

“Beth.” Liz instantly felt relieved and guilty at the same time. She was the reason Beth and Mick had broken up, she’d kissed Mick. Liz felt the energy starting to crackle and build within her. “Oh god…” She backed up as Beth came closer and saw the concern now covering the other woman’s face.

“Dear God, Liz, what’s wrong?” Beth wasn’t feigning her concern either; Liz was pale, her skin tinged with green light and damn….she needed to get that girl off the street. Beth reached out to touch her and Liz flinched away. “Okay, no touching, but you are…gl…glowing,” Beth almost stammered the word, “We need to get you back to Mick’s.”

“No,” Liz shook her head, “No…anywhere but there.”

Beth stopped, “Anywhere but there?” She was completely confused now, but Liz was starting to draw attention. “Okay, how about my place?” Her tone was placating and maybe a touch to sweet but whatever worked.

Liz looked at the people with their camera phones, others talking into their cells and she bolted toward Beth. “Yes, let’s go. Now”

“Over there.” Beth pointed to the car, unlocked it and they quickly slid in and sped off. After a few minutes the silence was deafening. Beth couldn’t help but think of all the things she had read, about Liz being shot, her robbing a store at gun point, her disappearance and the things her F.B.I source told her. She had fifty million questions, but the girl sitting next to her seemed so defenseless, and Christ there was more to life then a good story.

Beth pulled in front of her apartment and shut the car off. “Do you at least want me to call and leave a message for Mick letting him know you are with me?” She watched Liz flinch at Mick’s name and became even more concerned. She hated the thoughts racing through her brain and the niggling fear the maybe Mick had somehow hurt the girl, but it seemed so unlikely. “Ok, what about Josef? Can I call and leave a message with him?”

“Yeah,” Liz nodded dejectedly. Josef was a touchy subject too but someone needed to know where she was.

“Okay. Josef it is.” Beth grabbed her phone and dialed as she opened her door and headed to unlock her apartment. She saw Liz slowly following her and noticed that Liz was shoeless, and apparently bleeding. Damn.

“Hey, Josef. I just wanted to let you know that if Mick calls freaking out about Liz missing she is with me. I found her wandering around downtown. Apparently she doesn’t want to talk to him, but seriously I need to know what is going on here so someone needs to call me and let me know.” Beth put her phone in its cradle and headed off for her first aid kit, she wasn’t the best at this sort of thing, but she knew Liz couldn’t go to a hospital. Now with the whole glow in the dark/daylight thing she had going.

“Here, sit…” She pulled out a chair and directed Liz to it, “let me look at your feet.” She kneeled down and picked up Liz’s left foot gently and wiped off the blood. She was surprised at how placid Liz had suddenly become and was starting to wonder if the girl had gone into shock when she saw it.

The cuts were flickering with the same green light she had seen on the street only…they were sealing up, healing as she looked at them. Beth yelped, dropped Liz’s foot and scrambled backwards. Liz looked at her sadly, as if she were expecting that specific reaction and Beth suddenly felt small and petty.

“You are wondering what I am, aren’t you?” Liz’s voice was quiet. She leaned forward, resting her arms on her knees and stared at Beth intently. “You know where I am from, Roswell, New Mexico. Alien Town, USA.

Beth curled her legs into a more comfortable position and waited.

“Well, the stories are true. I know because I am not even human, or mostly not human, any more.” Liz stared at Beth’s face and watched her eyes widen. But like the good reporter Beth apparently was she knew when to listen and when to ask questions. “I shouldn’t have to tell you that what I am about to say can get you killed. But I will. There are people who want to destroy me because I loved a boy who turned out to be an alien, because he saved my life and changed me. And you should also know that they will kill anyone who knows this story. So it goes without saying you can’t tell anyone.”

Taken aback Beth wondered if she really wanted to know, she knew about Vampires and that was a deadly enough secret. But this seemed so much worse than that already, and yet she couldn’t not know. “I understand.”

Liz nodded. “Good, I am glad you do because I am living it and I still don’t.”

“I said I fell in love with a boy who was an alien, and that he healed me. Being who you are I am sure you have already read everything you could on who I am, so you know I was shot.”

Beth nodded guiltily, “Yes, I did.”

“I should have died that day, but I didn’t thanks to him, but because of his decision to save me, the Special Unit, an alien hunting unit, decided we were of interest.” Liz folded her hands together and tried to think of the most succinct way to put her story. “To sum up three years of my life quickly, they hunted us, and we, being Max, the boy I was in love with, his sister Isabel, Michael their brother, Maria, my best friend and Kyle who had also been healed by Max, all ran. Max and I fell apart, for reasons that don’t matter at the moment, and I started changing.”

Liz stood up and walked to the window. “I knew I was different already,. I had been told by another that I was more, and I’d had things happen so I knew it was true but this was different.” Liz turned around and faced Beth. “You saw me glowing, how I healed myself. I can’t control it. Any of it and the more emotional I become the worse this.

“Can I have a drink?” Her question startled Beth.

“Yes, of course.” Beth carefully stood, still trying to absorb what she’d been told already and found she just couldn’t. Why vampires were more believable than aliens she couldn’t explain but they were. “Juice, Water, Milk, Coffee, Wine…”

“Juice, Please.”

“Apple or Orange?”

“Um, Orange.” Liz smiled and walked into the kitchen. She took the glass Beth handed her and drank deeply.

“He cheated on me.”

Beth turned from putting the juice away and stared. “What?”

“Max, he cheated on me. That started the powers the first time, and when he did it again they kicked into overdrive. But they were getting worse before I found out. I lost it at work and people saw, just like out there on the street, and we all became separated. Kyle and I were on our own and that was why we were headed here, but the unit almost caught up with us in Kentucky and well…I lost Kyle too.”

“Oh, Liz…” Beth felt the emotions coming from the girl, who really wasn’t much younger then her, but she seemed so fragile, so out of balance. She walked over to hug her when Liz stepped back again.

“Wait…” Liz bit her lip. She needed to confess. “I kissed Mick.”

Beth stood there for a moment, shocked, but she had seen it coming and laughed. “That’s alright I slept with Ben.”

This Josefcentric chapter, also it is short cause Josef isn't very talky.

Chapter 10

Josef awoke abruptly as he had every evening for over four hundred years; although waking up in a freezer was significantly more pleasant then waking up in the dirt/a cave or ice room. He still felt he need to shower the second he woke, and having been fastidious about hygiene in life as he was in unlife he loved it when freezers were invented.

He stretched luxuriously, yawned unnecessarily and drew on his robe. He went to his closet pulled out what he wanted and headed into his bathroom. He could hear his cell ringing but he refused to answer it until he’d had a shower. It was just how things were; if it was a true emergency someone would be beating on his bedroom door…he smirked. That wasn’t true; most of his employees knew better, Mick on the other hand didn’t.

His friend had, in fact, dragged him out of the house sans shower and breakfast more then once. Josef tested the water and wondered once again why he was friends with the plebian. He stepped into the extremely hot shower, bless modern amenities, and quickly washed his hair. He might love the hot water but unfortunately he couldn’t stay under it for long.

Lather, rinse, think of dinner and not Elizabeth.

Josef turned off the water and frowned. Elizabeth Parker was going to be a problem. A delicious one, that sadly was off limits for him, but a problem nonetheless. His doorbell rang, dressing quickly he buzzed in his first freshie of the evening. She was right on time; he loved it when his dinner was prompt. Then again he loved it when everyone was prompt.

“Hello…” He smiled at the young blonde. He couldn’t remember her name but she was AB Negative, his favorite blood type, so he might make a point of learning it. “My Dear, what was your name again?”

“I am Anna.” She walked over to him and held out her hand. Josef smiled, he knew the women thought it was seductive, for him it was so much more then that. That smile hid his true thoughts. Even after a century of ‘behaving’ the desire to see his prey frightened, the accelerated heartbeat, the scent of fear in the air was hard to quash. So he smiled, and took her hand, ran his nose up to her inner elbow and began the seduction instead. It was almost, as satisfying. Almost.

It was so easy, she shuddered slightly under his touch, her pulse quickened, and her skin flushed. It was delightful and so easy, but even as he sunk his fangs into her arm and let the flavor of her blood wash over his tongue the act of feeding felt empty.

Josef suddenly pictured Elizabeth standing there, offering herself to him instead of the now pale, washed out, over primped blonde that stood there. His appetite disappeared. He released the girl and watched her walk over to his couch and sit.

He turned away from her, the sight of her disgusted him now and headed back up stairs to his room. “There is juice in the refrigerator, make sure you drink something before you leave.” He heard her gasp at the rudeness in his tone but he no longer cared. An unfamiliar sense of urgency was driving him to his phone, which was once again ringing.

He glanced at the caller id before he answered. “Hello Mick.”

“About time, Liz is missing.”

“What?” Josef once again had an unfamiliar rush of emotions. Panic, Distress…emotions he’d left behind with his humanity.

“Liz is missing. We…had a moment and she bolted.”

“A Moment?” Josef was already grabbing his jacket and car keys. “Is that a delicate way of saying you fucked her?” He felt a sliver of jealousy working its way through him and he ruthlessly tried to crush it.

“NO! I kissed her.”

“Whatever. I’ll head out and look for her too. Not that I have any idea where she would go but still…”

“Thanks man, I owe you one.”

“No, Mick, you owe me several… but who is counting.”

“Apparently you.” Mick quipped back and hung up.

Josef looked at his voice mail; saw that there were six calls from Mick, and deleted those and one from Beth. That puzzled him, so he listened to it on the way to his car, paused and smiled.

So Elizabeth and Beth were playing patty cake.

How interesting.

Small Author's Note

I had a heavy work schedule last week and therefor no time to write so I am sorry for the lack of updates after the rapid secession of them. I have the next few days off so I am starting the next chapter, but no promises about it being finished this week. I am shooting for next Monday or Tuesday, but hey if Mick and Josef play nice it might be here earlier. So keep your fingers crossed. :D

A.N. My divorce is starting to get messy, and I am still in the same house with him. As of right now, the phone and Internet bills are in his name and he is threatening to turn them off. So, if I don't appear with a update next week you will all know what happened. Sorry.

Chapter 11

Josef debated calling Mick, but he couldn’t refuse the request to keep it quiet. Besides, he was just perverse enough to enjoy the fact that Mick would be pissed at him for not letting him know. He also wanted to see Elizabeth again. The opportunity to see her without Mick there was entirely to tempting and he had never been good about resisting temptation. He smiled fondly; after all, that was how he had ended up a vampire.

He tried to push Elizabeth out of his mind as he drove toward Beth’s, but it was a task that proved to be nigh impossible. She drew him. She invaded his thoughts, disturbed his feeding. It was disconcerting. He’d made the mistake of caring for a human once before, and he didn’t want to go down that road again.

If it hadn’t been for Mick’s involvement, he would have seduced her and walked away. He had done it before. But Mick was involved which created a huge amount of unwanted and unneeded confusion.

He turned the corner, pulled up behind Beth’s car and parked. Josef quickly refocused. Pondering these things would do him no good. Elizabeth belonged to his best friend, and therefore, off limits. He needed to remember that.

Liz was watching out the window as soon as the sun had started to set. She was agitated and could swear she was feeling Mick’s fear. She could also swear she felt the confusion pouring off of Josef before he even turned the corner.

She hated it; the feelings weren’t hers. They itched and crawled and made her feel dirty. There was a connection with them now, accidental yet it was there. If she closed her eyes she could see it. There were tenuous shining threads connecting all of them. Liz wondered briefly if there was a way to break them, and the mere thought caused her pain.

She saw Josef wince and touch his fingers to his forehead, and she knew, in that instant, that this was irreversible. She was now connected to these two men…no, not men… vampires. As if her life wasn’t complicated enough.

These bonds were more tightly wound than anything she shared with Max. She had never been able to feel what he was feeling. Was this part of her ever changing powers, or had her bond with Max been temporary? Her mind was racing, and each new thought made her head pound.

Liz leaned her head against the window. It was still warm from the sun; for a moment, she focused on that, and the way it felt against her too cool skin. She took a deep breath and gathered her scattered thoughts.

She hadn’t felt Max for weeks before she’d left. The fighting had wore her down, and there had been a point where being in the same room with him caused pain. If that was a temporary bond, what would a permanent bond do? Would she lose even more of herself, or could Mick and Josef help her gain control over her powers? She was attracted to them both, so much so that it frightened her, and she could hear Josef knocking which meant she was out of time.

“Beth, you have no idea how delighted I was to receive your call.” Josef’s voice was soft, warm even, but there was always an underlying tone that felt like mockery.

“Apparently, you are the lesser of two evils; in Liz’s opinion, not mine, and really I only called so Mick wouldn’t tear the city apart looking for her,” Beth closed the door behind him and added, “with your help, of course.”

Josef took off his sunglasses, folded them and put him in his pocket. He could see Elizabeth standing quietly by the window; she looked pale and her stillness bothered him.

“Yes, well, I do love a good town razing, but this century isn’t really conducive to that sort of fun.” He threw Beth a feral grin, “All those pesky reporters make reminiscing the old times difficult,” Josef turned to looked at Elizabeth as he finished, “after all, it wouldn’t do to end up on the six o’clock news.”

Liz bit back a smile. Josef was amusing, and she could tell he was only half joking and enjoying the banter. Whereas, Beth looked irritated and bored, as if Josef were a reluctant child who needed to be tolerated. That was something that would have to change if she and Beth continued toward the friendship that was obviously forming.

“Elizabeth, you naughty, naughty girl,” Josef walked toward her slowly, shaking his finger slightly as he spoke. “Running away like that, attempting to cause chaos and panic, a failed attempt too, I might add. I should spank you.” He hadn’t meant to say that, exactly, but something about the way she looked, the fragile air about her had him desperately wanting to hear her laughter. He raised his eyebrow and smirked. “But you would like that too much, wouldn’t you, you minx.”

Laughter bubbled in her chest and spilled out of her lips before she could even think of restraining it. “I probably would.”

Josef stepped closer and chucked her under the chin. “That’s my girl.” He said softy, so softly it was almost a whisper. Liz stilled and her eyes went dark at his touch. He stared at her for a moment before stepping back. Josef wanted to shiver, the air around him felt charged, volatile, and he knew that the small slip of a woman in front of him was the cause. He could almost smell the power coming off of her.

Beth’s phone went off loudly in the silence. “Hello? What? Where? Ok, I am leaving now.” Beth grabbed her jacket and bag. “I have to go; I have a tip on a great story.” She paused, walked over to Liz, hugged her hard and whispered, “Be careful”, in her ear before rushing out the door.

Liz suddenly felt awkward; Beth’s presence had been a safety net, preventing her from saying or doing anything stupid.

“Mick has a habit of being an imbecilic moron.” Josef stated in a matter of fact tone. “He can be slightly obsessive about certain things, like answers or finding someone.” He casually sat on the couch. “This means, you, my dear, need to tell Daddy Josef everything that happened, and please spare no details, so we can fix this.”

I am am going to attempt to start posting this weekly, Thursdays most likely but because of the holiday this week I am posting early.

Chapter 12

Even though she was standing still, Liz felt as if she were prowling around the room, circling the truth, Josef, her feelings…playing a game of cat and mouse she was bound to lose. With Mick she’d stood a chance of hiding what was happening for a bit longer at least but not against Josef.

His expression was wary, as if he were expecting her to lie, hence the joking. He was trying to disarm her, make her comfortable. Liz looked at him carefully. He wasn’t the sort you’d want as an enemy, but he was someone you’d want as a true friend or a lover because he would tear up the world for those he cares about.

“What did Mick say to you?”

“Oh, so that is how we are going to play this.” Josef crossed his leg and tapped his fingers against his thigh. “Alright then, I’m good at this game, just so you know.” His eyes were feral, and Liz couldn’t repress the shiver that ran through her.

Liz sighed, this was going to be more difficult than she expected. “No, Josef, this isn’t a game; nothing about this is a game. I just wanted to know what Mick said; I needed to know where to start and if I needed to defend my actions.”

Josef chuckled coldly. “That there was a moment, apparently involving kissing, and you ran.”

“Accurate, but it doesn’t get into the meat of the problem.” Liz moved closer to him as she spoke. Her words were stilted, almost forced; yet her movement was graceful. She wanted to see how far she could push him; how far his loyalty to his kind and to Mick went.

“The meat of the problem?” Josef asks questioningly, raising his eyebrow. There is a wealth of dirty remarks he could make, but for once he skips them.

“Yes,” Liz moved her hand in an oddly jerking motion; Josef couldn’t quite tell what her actions betrayed. “I burned him…his lips, that is, when he kissed me.”

“You burned him?” Josef didn’t bother to hide his disbelief.

Liz moved closer, standing directly in front of him now looking at him coyly through her lashes. “I’m dangerous. Didn’t you know that?” It hit him; they were still playing a game, but this time he wasn’t sure of the rules. His hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, capturing it and encircling it easily.

“What the hell are you playing at?”

“I could expose you all, did you know that?” Liz watched his eyes narrow at the threat, but rushed on before he could say anything. “What I am, what I am becoming, I am infinitely more dangerous than you can believe. There are people looking for me, people who would love to know who and what you are. People who would cut you open just to watch you heal and then do it all over again.” Liz smiled coldly as she spoke.

Josef stood faster than Liz could see or even imagine; she found herself staggering backwards, gravity pulling at her till she tumbled to the floor.

“Little girl, you have no idea what you are playing with.” Josef’s eyes had gone ice blue, his fangs had appeared and he was leaning over her threateningly.

Liz stood up slowly, ignoring the waves of tension and confusion coming off of the man in front of her. “No, you have no idea what I am. I burned Mick, with my mouth. I lost control and I burned him. I burned his counter; I made things explode.” She looked at him calmly, very aware of how close he was and how close she felt to losing control again. “The Special Unit is looking for me, Josef, looking for my friends who are all like me. They know I am more alien than human.” She watched Josef’s face carefully and saw his expression go unchanged; in that instant, she knew he had seen things from her to. “But you already knew that, didn’t you?”

“Yes. I saw…something I couldn’t explain. You’re from Roswell; there have always been rumors, whispers, so I connected the dots, especially with everything I have seen happening around you.” Josef paused. His eyes went back to normal and his fangs were hidden once more. “You don’t smell human, and I can feel power leaking from you like an old faucet.”

Liz stepped closer, laid her hands on his chest and looked up at him. Now there were no games, no coy looks, just seriousness and something more that he couldn’t quite read yet.

“Then you understand what a danger I am to your world.” Liz’s voice was low, cautious.

Josef nodded and covered her hands with his own. He could feel her chest heaving against his, feel her breath against his neck, and he wanted her, consequences and friendships be damned. Everything he was screamed out that she was his.

“I need a favor.”

“Who do I have to kill?” The words slipped out his mouth carelessly.

Liz leaned up, her hair brushing his face, her breath hot in his ear and whispered. “Me.”

Her words rocketed through him; he was shocked but at the same time his respect for her had no boundaries. She was putting Mick, him, and all of the Vampires’ safety in front of her own. She trusted him to do what could become necessary if she went supernova, and he loved her for that. Her actions, her words…she owned him, body and soul. He leaned back, looked her in the eye, and made the one promise he hoped to never have to keep. “I give you my word, but I plan on doing whatever is necessary to not have to keep it.”

Liz sighed and fell boneless against him, her chin on his chest, her eyes still holding his. “Thank you.”

Josef smiled grimly, before leaning down and capturing her lips. He felt more than heard her sigh, and for a second, it was perfection. Perfection, however, doesn’t last.

Electricity coursed though him, searing him from the inside out leaving everything in its wake raw. He could feel Liz pulling away from him even as the pain stopped, but he wouldn’t let her go. He dragged her to the floor with him as his legs gave out, and he could hear Liz panicking and sobbing, pulling at his hand ineffectually but it all felt so far away. Soon even the sound of Liz’s crying faded into nothingness, and all he could hear was the thumping of her heart and whoosh of her blood sliding through her veins.

Without a thought… because there was no thought now… only need. The need for blood to easy the pain, heal his wounds. He grabbed at the body near him, the one he could smell, the one whose blood was making his fangs ache. He heard a whimper; it was a soft fragile noise as he bit the body’s neck and sucked deeply. Blood, not entirely human but, oh, so fucking delicious, flowed over his tongue, and he could feel it healing him, faster than he could have imagined. All too quickly, he could hear and feel the heartbeat in the body he was holding falter, and he reluctantly pulled away. He looked down, the pain gone, his insides no longer raw and his mind cleared.

“Liz?” Josef panicked, she was pale, and her heartbeat was slow. He listened for another moment and was relieved to find it was also steady, but the most amazing thing, the thing that would have stopped his heart if were still beating, was the crackling sparks of green energy arching between the fang marks healing them before his eyes. Damn she was amazing.

He watched her, waiting but his vigil was interrupted by a knock on the door. Josef looked up and knew he was fucked. It was Mick.

Eclipse 13

Beth slid deeper into the shadows by the freezer; she’d crouched down hoping the autopsy table would hide her presence. Guillermo had promised her ten minutes alone with the body, but it wasn’t happening. She could hear the voices of two men arguing lowly, and if she were lucky they were looking for the body on the first table. Of course that would kill her story, but at least she wouldn’t have to explain why she was here.

The door opened, and Beth shivered.

“I don’t like this, Maxwell. It’s too… perfect. We get exposed, and suddenly, there’s a new body?”

“Be quiet and help me look.”

“Max, I am telling you, this is bad. Nasado is dead, so who did this? Kal?!”

“I don’t know Michael, that’s why we are here.”

Those names, Beth recognized them. She pressed back against the wall as far as she could go. They were here for the same reason she was, and apparently, they were also Liz’s lost ‘friends’. She needed to get out of here and get to Liz. If these were the husband and brother-in-law, Liz would know about the body and the hand print, and that would also mean the special unit would be coming. Beth felt her heart clench and her stomach roll dangerously. She fought to stay still and keep her breathing under control. Mick and Josef could be exposed, all of them could.

“I don’t know what we are going to find staring at a body. Kal is the only shifter we know, and if it isn’t him, we are in some pretty serious trouble. Add that to the fact we lost Liz and Kyle, and that the Special Unit has been on our ass for over a week this whole thing fucking stinks.”

“Liz and Kyle can take care of themselves, and Liz is the reason we are a target… again.” Beth heard the malice lacing the man’s voice. That was supposed to be Liz’s husband, and he was acting like he hated her. Beth forced herself to stay still, but what she really wanted to do was leap out and taser the asshole into the next millennia.

Michael grumbled, and Beth heard metal clattering against metal with a soft curse quickly following. The scalpel landed near her feet and Beth felt her heart stop. Footsteps; thud… thud… thud, and she knew if the man leaned over just a bit more he would see her. “This is ridiculous. I know there is more what is going on with you and Liz than you are telling me, fine whatever. Be an asshole. Just remember I follow you because I am your second; you’re my brother and it is my duty. I follow Liz because I love her.”

Beth held her breath as the man, Michael, moved closer still and then stopped. How he couldn’t see her, she didn’t know, but he hadn’t looked at her, or said anything. The scalpel laying near her feet quivered, spun and then flew up into Michael’s hand, leaving little doubt in her mind these were most definitely Liz’s friend’s. She watched him toss the scalpel back on its tray and then clap Max on the shoulder. “Let’s go, this isn’t getting us anywhere.”

“Fine, but we aren’t leaving L.A. yet.”

“Whatever Maxwell… whatever.” The door opened and Beth heard two sets of footsteps head out into the hallway. She held herself still for a moment longer and then let out a deep sigh. She sagged against the wall and pulled out her phone. She needed to get a hold of Liz right away, and as soon as her legs stopped shaking, she’d take pictures of the corpse than get the hell out of here.

Kyle sat calmly on the hard floor. The room was awash with shaved heads and brown robes; the scent of incense hung heavy in the air as the smoke curled and drifted around the room gleefully. He felt completely at peace. He was calm, centered, and there was nothing but the warmth of Buddha’s love surrounding him. He opened his eyes and looked at his brother’s sitting, meditating and chanting around him. There was only one thing missing…Liz…but as much as he needed to find her, he needed this too. He needed what the brothers had freely given him, wisdom, food, quiet contemplation, and much needed rest.

He stood quietly, unwilling to interrupt and nodded to the Zen master as he walked out into the bright sunshine. Kyle took a deep breath, closing his eyes and feeling his lungs expand and then his diaphragm, holding it then expelling it slowly. He pushed his anxiety away; he pushed away all thoughts of fear and started down the path to the Lotus pond.

Soon enough he would have to leave. He could feel it, the energy and the restlessness that came with the very rare vision. Visions he’d told no one about; no one but the Zen master not long after he arrived. The water of the pond rippled as a bug landed on it, and the small waves expanded until they disappeared. Soon.

Also if you head over to my author's page I am posting teasers of the three other fics I am working on and will start posting soon.

Chapter 14

Josef ran his fingers through Liz’s hair, brushing off her forehead and moving the strand that was trapped on her lips. He leaned over and grabbed a pillow from the couch, placed it under her head, all the while ignoring the persistent knock on Beth’s door. He would get to that and Mick in a moment, maybe his very last and if it was he wouldn’t fight Mick at all because he deserved it. Liz features were porcelain thin and just as pale.

Because of him.

He’d taken her like she was nothing, when in fact he was fairly sure she was everything. He leaned over, pressed a soft kiss to her lips, this time there was nothing but the soft sound of her breathing and the fluttering of her lashes against her cheeks, and then went to face Mick.

Now he knew how all the vampires and humans he’d condemned to death over the centuries, felt.

He opened the door and saw Mick’s surprised expression, any other time it would be an excuse for mockery but not now, not with Liz lying still as death on the floor and her blood singing in his veins.

“Josef?” Mick pushed into the apartment and saw Liz. He stumbled and then was instantly at her side. He could hear her heartbeat steady and slow; hear her breathing, and he knew she was alright but…fury, cold and lethal coiled in his gut. He turned his gaze on the man he considered his best friend.

“What the hell happened?”

With a steady gaze, Josef unflinchingly stared into his friend’s eyes. “I bit her.” He watched Mick’s eyes change, his fangs appear and in the same instant he felt the other vampire’s hands encircle his throat, lifting him from the floor. The growl aimed at him was loud and fierce enough to shake the walls.

“What?” Rage, pure and focused poured through him. He wanted to lash out, destroy Josef quickly and return to the woman he loved. But a small fragile thread of rationality snaked its way across his mind.

Josef wasn’t fighting back.

He was hanging there, staring at him, allowing himself to be handled.

Why wasn’t he fighting back?

“Mick, put him down.” Liz’s voice was low, raspy, as if she hadn’t had a drink in days but he instantly obeyed. He was at her side once again before Josef even crumbled to the floor. He pulled her gently into his arms, kissed her temple and before tossing another glare toward Josef.

“It was an accident.” Liz felt foggy; her limbs were thick and as heavy as cinder blocks. She licked her lips but it didn’t help.

Across the room Josef carefully stood, brushed the invisible dirt from his suit and went to pour Liz a glass of juice. His cell rang, pulling it out he answered only because it was Beth.

“Josef?” Beth’s voice was shaking.

“Who else would be answering my phone?” The sarcasm slipped out of him naturally.

“Look, something happened here at the morgue and you need to get Liz to your place. I don’t think…yeah, your place is the safest.”

“Hold on, are you alright and what do you mean safer?” Josef felt a trickle of concern for her safety. He didn’t hate her after all; she was amusing…for a human.

“Just trust me please.” Beth seemed frantic.

“Alright, meet us there.” Josef clicked his phone shut and looked over toward Mick and Liz. They were watching him, apparently following his conversation with Beth.

Mick stood, his hand in Liz’s pulling her up along with him. Liz’s face was still pale, and she seemed unsteady on her feet. “Is she alright?” Her voice was soft, still rough and Josef walked over, juice in hand.

“Here drink this.” He pressed the glass into her free hand. He felt unsteady; the guilt he felt was so unusual, out of place in him. In fact he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this awful emotionally. Mick stood silently next to her still, and Josef could feel Mick’s patented glare crawling over his skin. He wondered if there was a way to repair the damage he’d done to their friendship.

Liz took the glass and quickly drained it. She was feeling stronger with each passing second.

“What did Beth want?” He was looking at Liz as he spoke, he couldn’t even begin to explain how Liz had supplanted Beth’s place in his heart, mind, soul. If he was human, he would have gone so far as to say she was the very air he breathed. But he wasn’t, neither was she, and apparently there was something going on between her and Josef too. Jealousy snaked its way through him, leaving nothing but bitterness and anger in its wake. He turned to look at Josef and found him staring at Liz.

“Josef?” He watched his friend’s gaze snap back to him, and for a few seconds remain unguarded. The longing, the desperate, raw need he saw almost drove him to his knees. In that instant he forgave him, how could he not? Whatever had happened, it had been an accident, Josef was in love with Liz too, and he would never hurt someone he loved.

“Beth wanted me to get Liz to my place, she didn’t say why but I gather from her tone, and what she did manage to say, that something went terribly wrong while at the morgue.”

Mick sighed heavily and muttered, “She never learns.”

Michael paced the threadbare, circa nineteen seventies, carpet. He was pissed, and he was in the dark. Max was being King Maxwell, asshole extraordinaire… again. Lying, keeping him in the dark…it was just like old times and he was fucking tired of it. Without Liz here as a buffer, it was only going to get worse. She understood him, she understood how relived he was when Maria left instead of telling him over and over how he had messed up. She understood why he was happy Isabel had gone to Jesse finally, and the need to draw, create when everything else in his life was destruction orientated. She got him, he loved her for that and he fucking missed her.

He was going to figure out what the hell happened and what Max had done this time. He was going to find her if it killed him. Someone needed to look out for her, and he would have to do the job until someone better came along.
