Chapter Eleven

“Liz, why are you sitting here all by yourself?” Kyle asks as he approaches later on. “Instead of out there shaking that little ass of yours?”
I shrug, letting out a sigh as I glance back at the supply room, where Nick and Max are still holed up.
What the hell are they doing in there? Plotting hostile takeovers? Having a private keg party? Jeez…
“I just don’t feel like dancing, I guess.”
He looks at me unbelievingly. “Right…” he drawls, shaking his head. He opens his mouth again to speak, when his eyes widen and train on a spot to my left.
I glance over in curiosity and see a beautiful brunette clad in a short black skirt and white halter holding a platter of dirty glasses and walking towards the bar. Her long hair hangs to the middle of her back and seems to shimmer under the dim lights.
I look back at Kyle and do a double take as I notice the longing in his eyes. I snap my fingers in his face. “Hey, where are you?”
He blinks and looks back at me. “Huh?”
“Who is she?” I ask in amusement. I look back over and see the girl in question smiling shyly at a group of college-aged guys doing their best to flirt with her.
“Who is who?” he replies in irritation, his jaw clenching as the mystery girl laughs at something one of the overzealous Romeo’s says.
“As if you don’t know,” I state dryly, shaking my head back and forth. “Come on, Valenti. Let’s hear it.”
I expect him to come back with a sarcastic quip as usual, therefore I am shocked when he releases a sigh of frustration and plops on the stool next to me. “She’s the new girl Joe hired.”
My brows lift in surprise as I look back over at her. She turns her head quickly, as if being caught staring at something. “Really? I thought you said she was from India?”
“What? I said Indiana, Liz,” he replies. “You need a hearing test.”
I smack him on the chest, mock glaring. “Hey, maybe you should try enunciating sometime, you stupid jock.”
He simply smirks and holds a hand over his chest. “Ouch, babe. Straight into the raw nerves.”
I roll my eyes as he breaks out into a grin. Well, damn. So much for getting free belly dancing lessons. “What’s her name?”
“Serena,” he breathes reverently, then seems to realize his blight. “Serena Gannon,” he states more firmly.
“Gannon? Is she related to Nick?” I ask in interest.
“Cousins or something,” Kyle states offhandedly. “But don’t go getting any ideas, Parker. She doesn’t really talk much, I doubt she’s looking for a new best friend.”
I cluck my tongue knowingly. “Let me guess… she turned you down?”
His face reddens in indignation. “I didn’t ask!”
“Hey, simmer down, big boy!” I say in surprise, holding my hands up in placation. “I was just joking around.”
His scowl disappears and he relaxes as he turns to look back at her. I study him for a moment, my eyes narrowing in realization.
“You like her.” It’s not a question, and he looks sharply at me. “Admit it, Kyle. This isn’t one of your usual bimbos. You actually like her, don’t you?”
Before he can answer me to deny or confirm, Serena steps up to us.
“Hi, Kyle,” she smiles hesitantly, her green eyes blinking shyly. “Um… Joe said you could show me around and get me adjusted and everything?”
Kyle practically falls off his chair at her soft voice. “Uh… uh... I uh…” He proceeds to stare at her owlishly.
Serena shifts uncomfortably under his dazed scrutiny and I roll my eyes before reaching out a friendly hand.
“Hi, I’m Liz, Kyle’s interpreter,” I smile brightly, earning a glare from Kyle. “He’s still a work in progress. So, you’re Joe’s newest victim? ”
She smiles a little wider and places her hand in mine. “Serena Gannon. And yes, I suppose I am.”
Up close I can tell she’s even more beautiful than I thought. Her skin is a delicate mixture of peaches and cream, lending her a youthful innocence. I figure her to be in her late teens, early twenties. Her eyes are shaped like a cat’s, and flecked with gold inside a deep evergreen. Her smile is reminiscent of Nick’s, down to the last dimple.
“You’re Nick’s cousin?” I say warmly, immediately liking her. “Now that I think about it, I remember him speaking of you.”
She laughs lightly, the sound making me think of tinkling bells at Christmas. “Guilty as charged. I hope whatever he said wasn’t too far-fetched. He has a tendency to embellish where I’m concerned.”
“He said only nice things, so I’m sure he didn’t exaggerate,” I smile. “I remember he spent six hours talking to me on the phone about you winning a scholastic achievement award from Brown University. I don’t think he got any sleep that night,” I laugh.
Her face flushes slightly and then her eyes widen. “Wait… Liz? As in, Liz Parker?”
I nod my head, smiling in puzzlement as she suddenly laughs and gives me a friendly hug.
“Nick has told me so much about you, I feel like you’re a member of the family!” she says excitedly, then laughs lightly. “I remember when he had a crush on you and you were all he’d talk about!”
My mouth drops open and I stifle a shriek. “WHAT? He had a crush on me?”
Serena’s smile falters. “Oh goodness, you don’t know? I can’t believe he never told you! It was a few years back, but I was sure he’d have said something about it by now!”
I shake my head in amazement. “Well, that just figures! One more potential date down the drain,” I grouse jokingly.
“Well, if it makes you feel any better, he told me he never said anything at the time because he knew you liked someone else,” Serena offered reluctantly. “Someone named Matt? I think that was his name.”
My mouth falls open again, and my cheeks flush as I hazard a glance at Kyle.
“Wait, who’s Matt?” he demands. “I don’t know any Matt’s. Liz, who is she talking about?”
“Or maybe it was Ma-“
“I think Nick just misunderstood,” I blurt out before Serena can guess correctly the name of my childhood crush and current flame.
Great, Nick has known all along about Max and me? Who else might have had an idea? Then again, Nick is more perceptive about things than many people.
“Hey, was all this going on while you and I were together?” Kyle demands suspiciously, complete with hands on his hips.
Serena glances at him then at me. “You two were involved?” she asks, biting her lip.
I wave my hand casually. “Oh, a long time ago. And Nick wouldn’t have dreamed of poaching on your territory, Kyle,” I add blandly, rolling my eyes at his show of indignance.
“Yeah, well… whatever,” Kyle mumbles, then turns his attention to Serena. “So… what brings you to Roswell, Serena?”
I raise an eyebrow at his flirtacious tone. Well, well, Mr. Valenti seems to have regained his use of speech…
I stifle a giggle at my cheeky thought.
Serena flushes slightly, and brushes her hands down her skirt before answering. “Oh, well… after I graduated, I spent a year abroad-“
“Ooh, where?” I squeal in interest, taking a sip of my drink as I give her my full attention.
“Um, mostly Europe. Florence, Paris… I spent a few months in Athens.”
“Wow,” I sigh enviously. “I would die to see Italy. But alas, I’ve never been out of the South-West.”
“Well, Italy’s nice,” Serena agrees. “But I think my favorite had to be Scotland. There’s just something magical about the Highlands. All those castle ruins, the fertile land, the legends… it just seems like anything could happen there.”
“Well, you sold me!” I laugh, glancing at Kyle, who has been hanging on Serena’s every word. “What about you, Kyle?”
“Huh?” his head slips out of his hands as he breaks out of his ‘Serena-appreciation’ daze. “Yeah, sure! That sounds great!”
I shake my head at him indulgently. “You have no idea what we’re talking about, do you?”
He glares at me. “I can follow a freaking conversation, thank you very much. Yes, I think Scotland sounds very… magical.”
I can’t help it, I giggle at his description and even Serena tries to press her lips into a straight line. “Wow, I wish the Lobo’s could be here to hear this,” I say, referring to the UNM football team that Kyle plays for.
“Anyway… you were telling us why you’re here, before Liz rudely interrupted you,” Kyle says between gritted teeth.
I snort, but turn my attention back to Serena.
“Um, I guess I got a little tired of traveling and decided to come home for awhile before I started my schooling,” Serena explains.
“But why not stay in Indiana?” I inquire. “Not that we mind having you here,” I add quickly.
“Certainly not,” Kyle murmurs.
Serena shrugs a shoulder. “There was some family stuff at home… let’s just say I didn’t feel like getting in the middle of it. Nick called, and before I knew it he was offering me a place to stay and a job.”
I nod, exchanging a glance with Kyle. “Well, I don’t know how much fun Roswell is, but you’ll have a blast working here. Joe’s a great boss – he looks big and intimidating, but he’s really just a big ol’ teddy bear.”
“Says the girl who doesn’t work here,” Kyle grumbles good-naturedly. “Haven’t you figured out yet that Joe is only like that with women?”
“Maybe if you didn’t purposefully try to piss him off,” I point out and Kyle grins as he hops of the barstool.
“Yeah… well, someone has to. Come on, Serena. Let’s show you the ropes.”
“Okay,” she blushes again. “It was really nice meeting you, Liz.”
“Likewise, we’ll have to get together so I can introduce you to the rest of the group.”
“Great, well, um, I’m staying with Nick so you can just call there…” she trails off uncertainly, and I nod.
“Definitely. Well, take care of her Kyle, and try not to bestow any of your bad habits on her,” I quip, waving as they head away from the bar.
Leaving me alone once again.
I sigh again and stare down at gleaming wood as my mind wanders twenty feet away.
After several moments of anxious pondering, I see Nick and Max finally emerge from the back room. Nick has his arm slung around Max’s shoulders, his mouth moving as Max nods, his face slightly strained.
My grip on my glass tightens as I watch Nick pat Max on the back and look over at me. He sort of shoves Max in my direction and Max stumbles, scowling over his shoulder as Nick looks innocently at the ceiling.
Max turns back and our gazes clash. A flare of awareness jolts me and I swallow at the connection. I watch as the similar reaction on Max’s face and he takes a hesitant step toward me.
I swallow nervously as he reaches me. We both just stand there for a moment, before Max opens his mouth.
“I’m sorry,” he stares into my eyes. “I just got upset thinking about you and that bast- anyway, I had no right because it was before we were together and I don’t want to be one of those boyfriends who get pissed off about stuff that doesn’t matter in the long run and-“
“Max!” I cut of his rambling, my mouth hanging open at his harried words and imploring tone. “What did you just say?”
He bites his lip in an adorable fashion and cocks his head. “Uh, I’m sorry?”
I smile brightly. “You’re forgiven.”
He blinks in surprise. “I am? You’re not even going to make me beg? Or ask me about the girls I’ve slept with?”
I wrinkle my nose. “Now that you mention it… I did kind of have a little question…” my voice trails off.
“What?” he places his hand on top of mine. “Liz, you can ask me anything. I don’t want you to think I’m going to blow up or act like an asshole or something. What do you want to know?”
I worry my lip between my teeth, hesitating momentarily before blurting out, “Max, did you ever sleep with-“
“MAX!”
My words are cut off by a very familiar squeal accompanied by a flurry of blonde curls and a white halter dress.
“Tess…” I mumble, both finishing my earlier sentence and stating the obvious.
“Max, there you are!” Tess Harding blows a deep breath and gives Max a huge smile. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
Max smiles politely. “Well, you found me. Is there something you need?”
“Max, I’ve missed you so much,” Tess says in a sweet voice that makes me want to gag. “We need to talk.”
She glances at Max’s hand on top of mine, her eyes narrow, then she shrugs, obviously discarding me as a possible threat. I can practically hear my teeth grinding.
Max must also, because he shoots me an apologetic look before turning his attention back to the blonde at his side. “Um, Tess… we’ve already said everything that needs to be said…” he trails off meaningfully, but Tess shakes her head.
“Max, please?” she says, her blue eyes big and pleading. “I know you said you needed some time, but…” she glances at me and her lips press together. “Excuse me, but I need to talk to Max. Alone.”
“Tess-“ Max starts, but I shake my head and smile fakely at the petite blonde.
“I don’t want to intrude, so I’ll just be over by the stage,” I point over to where Alex and his band have just walked in. “Take as long as you need.”
“Thank you,” Tess preens at the same time Max says, “Liz, wait…”
I simply waggle my fingers and turn away, the smile immediately dropping from my face as I stomp over to where Nick, Joe, and Alex are talking.
“Hey, Liz,” Nick says, grinning at me, then narrowing his eyes at my stormy expression. “What’s wrong? I thought Max apologized?”
I glare at him and look pointedly at Alex, who is staring at me with a confused expression. “That girl is here again.”
Nick frowns and glances over my shoulder where Tess is currently got her arms wrapped around Max’s waist. His blue gaze darkens momentarily before he swallows and looks away. “It’s an open bar, Liz. We can’t just not let her in,” he says sadly, his gaze flickering back over my head.
I turn and clench my jaw as I watch Tess place her lips on Max’s.
