“I love you.”
Alec jerked awake suddenly, his dream slowly fading until only those three words remained. With shaking hands he rubbed his tired face.
“You alright?” Logan asked from the passenger seat.
“Yeah.” Alec paused shaking his head, “I’m always alright.” As he closed his eyes Logan and Max exchanged looks, both knew Alec wasn’t alright.
Casting another glance at the now sleeping Alec, Logan focused on the soothing sounds of the piano…
* Alec’s dream *
He walked through the darkened hall looking for something. Someone. The melodic sound of a piano filled the air. As he nears a door the sound is deafening. He enters the room.
“Don’t you like me?” he hears someone ask. “I like you a lot.” he hears himself answer.
“Who’s there? Show yourself!” he demands.
“I love you.” he hears again, spinning around he makes out a shape in the mist surrounding him.
“Are you alright?” he hears the feminine voice ask, he knows that voice. “I’m just happy.” he again hears himself respond.
“I love you Simon…” the words echo all around him. A girl appears slowly. She reaches for him. “I love you…”
Stepping closer, Alec recognizes her. The memories fighting to surface. “Rachel…” he whispers reaching for her. For every step he takes towards her, she moves further away.
“ No, Rachel, RACHEL!” he yells as she disappears.
*End dream*
“RACHEL!” Alec screams as he wakes up. Frantically he looks around for her, before remembering where he is. Slowly his heart calms down as reality takes hold.
“Still want to say you’re alright?” Logan asks skeptically.
“Yes.” Alec growls turning to stare out the window. “Do you have anything besides classical?” he asks barely suppressing a shudder.
“No. Not a fan?” Max asks glancing at Logan and shrugging.
“Something like that.” Alec mumbles still staring out the window. “Something like that.” He repeats to himself. “The darkness with out, compares not to the darkness within.” He heard that somewhere…
Leaving Alec to his musings Logan turns to Max, So Roswell? I didn’t know you had any siblings there.”
“Yeah. Lili, Ky, and Wits. They settled there at different times. They always hated the cold. Ever been there?” Max asks glad for a break in tension.
“No, but I can’t deny I’ve been curious,” Logan answered stealing a glance at Max out of the corner of his eye. “So do you believe in aliens?” he asked seriously as his eyes twinkled.
Turning to face Logan briefly, Max tried to hide the amused twitch of her lips, Not really. Though if Manticore can cook us up, why shouldn’t green men exist?” she smiled finally. The first real smile Logan had seen in a long time.
Reaching across the divide he grasped her gloved hand within his own. Startled Max went to pull away, but remembered as long as they wore gloves, they could “touch”.
“Hey,” Logan spoke softly, “Don’t worry. We can beat this. Have faith.” He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
“I do. I have faith in you.” Max told him, focusing on the road, mushy wasn’t her.
