Chpt 9
Tess shifted uncomfortably on the seat as Kyle plopped down and grabbed the remote. She moved away from him a little and he noticed it from the corner of his eyes but kept his light tightly sealed as he watched the news in grim silence.
Toying with her blonde curls, Tess thought of an excuse to sleep in a different bed tonight. She didn't know why she was being hard on Kyle but her emotions were out of control right now. She was reminding herself of Kyle almost freeing Maria and then the bitter memory of her almost getting raped by a group of lustful vampires. Those two memories merged together, creating a daunting image of the word vampire.
Tess was mentally scarred with vampires. Anything that came into contact with them made her sick. Including herself.
"Kyle, I think I'm going to go to bed now." She jerked, feeling something touch her bare skin.
"Night Tess." Kyle quipped, not wanting to talk to her any longer.
Tess nodded and hurried towards the guest room.
When Kyle was sure she was out of his sight, he slammed the remote on the coffee table cursing with white rage.

"Max, the door is open." Liz said, pushing the door open to the garage. "Come in."
Max hesitated and followed Liz inside the garage. His eyes soon went on Maria who jumped up with a new lease of life as soon as she saw her Max. "Max!" Maria tried to pry the cage apart. "Oh Max, I'm so happy to see you!"
Liz held Max back. "Don't try and break the cage." She warned.
Max nodded and Liz hurried to the wall and grabbed the key. Maria rubbed her hands and when Liz put the key in the lock, another voice came into the room.
"Liz, is that you?" Alex coughed as he staggered into the dark room.
Liz left the key unturned and looked at Alex, she could only see half his face. The other half was hidden away in darkness. "Yes it's me Alex." Liz confirmed.
Max immediately went to Liz's side and stood there to mark his territory. Alex moved closer to reach his friend. "I think I've..." He paused and sniffed another presence.
Turning at Max, he hissed and bared his newfound fangs.
Liz's eyes grew wide with shock as she noticed the changes in Alex but it was a quick reaction as Alex and Max began to hiss at each other. Liz noticed Max was also sporting his fangs and Maria had joined in the vampire talk.
"Guys?" Liz's eyes darted back and forth between the three of them. "Alex where's Micheal?" Liz asked with urgency in her tone.
"Don't worry." Alex rasped. "I didn't bite him." He sneered.
Liz's breath hitched. "You became a vampire." Defeat plummeted her heart, she failed to protect a friend tonight. It was her fault. All her fault.
"The residue got into his bloodstream and spread like wildfire." Maria said. "No doctor could fix that unless they drain him of his blood. Which of course, will kill him."
Refusing to let the tears fall down, her lips trembled as she swallowed the news that her friend had changed into a monster. Max wrapped an arm around Liz but Liz pushed his arm away. "It was one of your men." Liz angrily accused him. "You said that they don't bite humans! You said it Max!" Liz snapped.
Max took a strong hold of Liz and Alex wondered if he should attack Max at that point but held himself back.
"Liz, I told you I would do anything to save the people I love. I thought Maria was in danger. Wouldn't you do the same for your friends? For the people you love?"
Liz bit her lip. Max was right, she would do anything to save her loved ones. Then she saw it in his eyes. Even as a monster, he could love. He could actually feel with his heart.
"You have a heart?" Liz whispered, suddenly able to listen to the beats of his heart.
"Just like Angel from Buffy the vampire slayer." Maria grinned. "Max does have a soul. We all do. Humans, pardon you they can also be your greatest enemy. To be human does not mean to be compassionate. It's two different things." Maria smiled. "You just assume all humans have a heart and anything that's not human doesn't."
Liz went to unlock Maria.
She looked Max straight in the eyes. "I guess you really are capable of loving someone."

Liz looked at Max quizzically. "We have a lot to talk about Max." The frown was still there on her face and Max's smile disappeared.
Minutes later, Max and Liz were in his bedroom where the privacy was high. He shut the door and Liz sat on the foot of his super king sized bed suddenly feeling uncomfortable.
He slowly turned with the eyes of a tiger; his facial expression was like that of a predator about to pounce on their prey. He wore a slight smirk and like a panther he slid towards her in a fluid motion; one second he was at the door, the next, he was on the bed with her.
"Today you stopped me from killing you." Liz started the conversation, trying to put a stop to the seductive tone he had dangerously introduced. "My friend has become a vampire and you found out my secret, my true identity."
Max cupped her cheek and gazed at her. "I promised to keep you protected." He murmured softly. "And those you love."
Liz closed her eyes and sighed. "That's not the point Max-the point is that you are always going to want to drink from humans and so will the rest of the vampires. That has to stop."
"Why?"
"Because they turn into you or die. The human race will perish. Vampires will dominate." Liz struggled to get out of her mouth as Max suddenly began to caress her hand gently.
"Is that such a bad thing?"
"It's very very bad." Liz nodded. "Humans deserve to live."
"So do we."
"Max, you're making me feel uncomfortable." Liz spoke with gritted teeth. She did not want to lose her focus. Not now, not ever.
The dim light suddenly flickered with a swift breeze of air that crept through the open window. The sudden draft circulated them and Liz hugged herself, trying to emit any cold feeling from her body. Max, however remained unaffected with an amused smile.
This girl was very receptive to her surroundings, maybe it would be easy to affect her he thought.
"What do you want Liz?" He whispered.
"I want you and your whole race dead." Liz lifted her long lashes and met his silent stare.
She would show him that she wasn't afraid. That she would fight against him if she had to.
Max gulped. "Is that what you really think?"
"Will you back off?", Swallowed Liz as she trembled a little while the draft became stronger.
"No."
Max's reply was a gentle smirk which held a dark secret behind it. The eyes shone as it they were behind a veil of mystery, clouded with darkness. Liz stood stunned for a moment, unable to believe him.
Liz scoffed and then stormed out of the room.
Closing his eyes, Max inhaled the fragrance she left behind.
He knew he had to wait a little.

Chapter Ten
Tossing and turning in his bed, Max shivered as the cold moonlight's breeze began to engulf him, leaving a silvery shadow in it's wake. Grabbing fistfuls of his silk sheets, Max moaned and uttered strange words as his nightmare took him again to those dark places...
[Nightmare]
He saw the blade kiss her skin, the sharp penetration in her skin and the trick of cherry red blood made his hunger awaken. He couldn't see her face, it was hidden underneath a black veil. Her hands were the only part of her body that was visible. The rest was hidden away. He yearned to see her face...just one more time.
Slowly reaching out towards her, he touched her hand. It was ice cold. The warmth he grew to love was no longer there. She was dying.
Then in the mirror he saw his father...Nasedo.
Nasedo wasn't his father.
But sitting on the mahogany arm chair, Nasedo was dressed in a crisp clean grey suit with a black tie. His hair was neatly combed back and he had no expression on his face.
"Nasedo." Max whispered and then turned his eyes to the veiled woman.
"You have to focus on the darkness Max." Nasedo said in a clear concise voice...still not looking at Max. "Only blood matters."
"Nasedo." Max repeated again, feeling a little stronger as the smell of fresh blood seeped into his senses. He leaned forward and took the blood with his tongue. It wasn't long before he latched on and began sucking like a hungry infant.
"Good my son, good." Nasedo sounded pleased.
Max felt the hand tremble beneath his lips and he finally pulled away, worried that he was over drinking. His lips were smeared with her blood. Oh god...what did he do?
"It's you Max. You should follow your destiny." Nasedo finally turned his haunting eyes at Max.
"No." Max shook his head. "I can't. I can't do this." He suddenly felt naked and vulnerable. It reminded him of his human form...of when he was just a boy.
He was just an innocent little boy back then.
"You have drunk from an angel." Nasedo grinned. "That is the best achievement for any vampire. Especially my son."
Max suddenly felt the blood rise up in his throat as he pulled the veil back..
No it couldn't be...It wasn't possible!
She fell into his arms, lifeless and cold that it would forever haunt him..
"What have I done!" He cried, staring at her body in horror.
[End of Nightmare]
Max sat up and gasped out aloud only to find Liz Parker standing before him, she was in his room. "And I thought vampires never slept." Mused Liz.
"You watch too much TV." Max retorted, feeling the sweat cool on his body.
Liz chose to ignore his sarcastic remark and sat on his bed. "I couldn't sleep."
"Yeah?" Max scoffed. "Neither could I." He pulled the sheet over himself, trying to shield himself away from Liz's prying eyes. "So what brings you to my bed this late hour?"
"I can't sleep knowing that you think it's ok to drink from humans." She admitted. "It's just not on."
"Don't expect me to have compassion for a selfish and vile species." He shot back. "Yes, I may not drink from them but that doesn't mean I respect them or feel anything for them."
"Was all that with Jesse a lie then?" Liz frowned. "Cuz you know I've been trying to figure it out. You putting on a show to make a fool outta me or are you just going round in circles?"
Max rolled his eyes and sniggered. "You're an angel, why don't you figure it out."
These Angels were over praised in literature, holy books, TV and everywhere. Angels were the creatures of perfection while his species, the vampires were notorious for their taste in human blood. It was outrageous. Angels had no free will, they were robots. Everyone should have mentioned that in their stupid literature. He never hated them but he despised the fact that they always were treated as the good guys. Everyone expected angels to save them.
"But I'm not god." Liz replied, staring at Max.
"Gee, now you realise." Max laughed.
"Stop being such an ass and listen to me. I don't have the time to play games with you. If you want, I can kill you right now. That's how much power I have Max." Liz lifted her fingers. "Just one touch and you would die."
Max stopped grinning and looked serious. "You wouldn't. You need something from me."
"Yeah but god's decision precedes over mine and if I have to Max, I will fucking kill you." Warned Liz.
Max shook his head, annoyed with Liz. "What do you want? Just say it and it's yours."
"Well..." Liz swallowed. "I want Alex to turn back into a human first."
"Sorry, that can't happen. I can't do that because I don't know how!" Hissed Max.
"Second.." Liz growled, with Max getting on her nerves she just wanted to take him out right now. "You will assist me in my quest to find a cure that converts vampires back into humans."
Max shook his head. "That's impossible. Humans have died in their pursuit of finding a cure. You're just kidding yourself Liz."
"May I need to remind that I am not a human." Liz hissed.
"Why do you need me?" Challenged Max. "Haven't I done enough for you already?"
"You are my cover. You only know the truth about me Max." Liz reminded him. "So you can protect me against your fellow vampires...not that I need protecting but I need an insider. I need you to make this look like...." Liz drifted off and blushed.
"A romantic getaway." Max finished. "Me and an angel. Imagine that."
"Stop it okay?" Liz frowned. "There's no need to be so damn annoying."
"Fine I'll be your lover." Max rolled his eyes and yawned. "But there's something you need to do too."
"What!?"
"First you gotta stop being so rigid with me and flow. If you're gunna pretend that we're lovers, you're gunna have to act like it to sweetheart." Teased Max.

"Tess...if I've done anything stupid or wrong that offended you then I'm sorry." Came Kyle's voice through the voicemail.
Tess having spent the entire day by herself and staying away from Kyle as much as possible finally allowed herself to listen to his voice. He sounded lonely and hurt. She suddenly felt guilty but the pain of him making that big mistake made her stop from calling him back. All she could do was listen to the voicemails he left her.
"I miss you Tess." Kyle admitted. "I love you too. I wish things didn't have to be this hard but damn...I miss you so much."
Tears began to well up in Tess' eyes and she blinked them away as Kyle finished his message. "I hope we can go back to us again. Bye."
Tess pushed the cell phone back into her pocket and proceeded to get off the train.
Once she stepped on the platform..she was greeted by a group of people.
"Erm..please get out of my way." Tess said while she noticed how bloodshot their eyes were.
All of them were wearing black leather and looked deadly. Their mouths curled up into a smile as they circled her. "You're with us now." One of them hissed before grabbing her throat.

"Does this happen to people like you?"
Now the questions were running so fast in Alex's head, he hadn't known anything about being vampires and to have just been thrust into the world of vampires was both overwhelming and exciting.
"Not usually. It's just my genetic makeup." Replied Maria
"Damn." Alex sighed. "And there is no cure for you?"
"Not that we know off...no." Maria shook her head.
"Maybe instead of trying to find me a cure, Liz and Max should just find a cure for you." Suggested Alex.

"Mrs Deluca please!" Begged Micheal. "You have to help me. There's gotta be a way to save him."
The red head woman turned her head towards Micheal and looked at him disdainfully. She had taken him home and spent all night arguing about vampires. She was definitely pissed off.. "You break into my office to get me to help you against vampires? The reason why my life got ruined in the first place?"
"I'm sorry I had no idea Maria was your daughter-I'd-"
"Save it." Amy raised her hand to stop Micheal from talking.
Micheal winced and stopped talking. Amy Deluca was a woman that people did not want to trifle with. She was stern, stubborn and scary as hell. She was a politician. She screamed power.
"Micheal..." She spoke softly. "If word got out that I threw my daughter away as soon as her father died, and that she's a dying half vampire that lives with other vampires, it will be the end of my career. I've slaved away to get this far. Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter but she's not human. I can't pretend she is because sooner or later someone will know what she is and they will treat her like a lab rat. She's better off with vampires. Now when you blackmailed with Maria, I just lost it."
Micheal smirked. "If Maria is the only way you'd help me, then so be it."
"Shut up boy! I'm not done talking!" Amy scolded Micheal.
Micheal remained quiet and allowed Amy to finish.
"Right..okay...I don't have the cure on me. There is a cure...I know where it is.." Amy paused when she saw Michael’s eyes light up in excitement. "But my husband died to get this cure. I don't want anyone to die that's why I was a bit reluctant to tell you the location of this cure."
"I have a friend...she can go." Micheal said quietly.
Amy shook her head. "If a half vampire couldn't do it, what makes you think a human could do it?"
"What if she wasn't human?"

She suddenly felt guilty but the pain of him making that big mistake made her stop from calling him back. All she could do was listen to the voicemails he left her.
"I miss you Tess." Kyle admitted. "I love you too. I wish things didn't have to be this hard but damn...I miss you so much."
Tears began to well up in Tess' eyes and she blinked them away as Kyle finished his message. "I hope we can go back to us again. Bye."
Tess pushed the cell phone back into her pocket and proceeded to get off the train.

"Well she can, she wants you to have your old life back and she also wants to give others the opportunity too."
"I like this life better." Alex shook his head. The female vampires were pleasing. He had better luck with them then human females. As far as Alex could remember, he had last dated when he was seventeen which was years ago. Since then, no girl came into his life. Now he had as many girls as he wanted. She was getting paler and paler by the day. He wondered when she was going to die and it scared it because the same could happen to him.
"I have genetic malfunction." Maria told him. "It means I'm a half breed. My dad was a hybrid and my mom was human." Maria explained.
"Does this happen to people like you?"
Now the questions were running so fast in Alex's head, he hadn't known anything about being vampires and to have just been thrust into the world of vampires was both overwhelming and exciting.
"Not usually. It's just my genetic makeup." Replied Maria
"Damn." Alex sighed. "And there is no cure for you?"
"Not that we know off...no." Maria shook her head.
"Maybe instead of trying to find me a cure, Liz and Max should just find a cure for you." Suggested Alex.

"Mrs Deluca please!" Begged Micheal. "You have to help me. There's gotta be a way to save him."
The red head woman turned her head towards Micheal and looked at him disdainfully. She had taken him home and spent all night arguing about vampires. She was definitely pissed off.. "You break into my office to get me to help you against vampires? The reason why my life got ruined in the first place?"
"I'm sorry I had no idea Maria was your daughter-I'd-"
"Save it." Amy raised her hand to stop Micheal from talking.
Micheal winced and stopped talking. Amy Deluca was a woman that people did not want to trifle with. She was stern, stubborn and scary as hell. She was a politician. She screamed power.
"Micheal..." She spoke softly. "If word got out that I threw my daughter away as soon as her father died, and that she's a dying half vampire that lives with other vampires, it will be the end of my career. I've slaved away to get this far. Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter but she's not human. I can't pretend she is because sooner or later someone will know what she is and they will treat her like a lab rat. She's better off with vampires. Now when you blackmailed with Maria, I just lost it."
Micheal smirked. "If Maria is the only way you'd help me, then so be it."
"Shut up boy! I'm not done talking!" Amy scolded Micheal.
Micheal remained quiet and allowed Amy to finish.
"Right..okay...I don't have the cure on me. There is a cure...I know where it is.." Amy paused when she saw Michael’s eyes light up in excitement. "But my husband died to get this cure. I don't want anyone to die that's why I was a bit reluctant to tell you the location of this cure."
"I have a friend...she can go." Micheal said quietly.
Amy shook her head. "If a half vampire couldn't do it, what makes you think a human could do it?"
"What if she wasn't human?"
