Chapter 11

Nathan sat huddled in a small corner in the room. A man had just left, leaving a bag of food in his wake. His stomach grumbled, but he refused to move from the safety of the corner. He had been there every since the dark man had ordered some more men to put him in the room. It wasn’t a bad room, in fact, it was a huge room, with a large bed, a flat screen t.v., and toys that any kid would be happy to have. But all that didn’t matter to Nathan, all he wanted was to go home. Home to his parents, who would wrap their arms around him, and tell him every thing was going to be okay, but that was all gone now. He could still hear his mothers scream, the image of his parents lying lifeless on his bedroom floor still fresh in his head. When the dark man had came into the closet, he had kicked and screamed, but he was no match against the larger man. He had tossed him over his shoulders like a rag doll, and as he was walking out the room with him, Nathan had saw his parents laying on the floor in a pool of their own blood.

He had fought hard, but in the end, the man had placed a napkin over his face, and everything went black. When he had woke up, he was laying in the bed, and he had been sitting there watching him.

“I see that you’ve finally decided to wake up” He said, lighting his cigar. Nathan only stared at him.

“I want to go home” he sniffed. He only let out a small chuckle and regarded him with a scrutinize eye. He stood up, and walked towards the bed. Nathan scooted back until his back came up against the headboard indicting he had nowhere to go. He sat down on the edge of the bed and held out his hand.

“Hush child, there’s no need to cry, I won’t hurt you” he said smoothly. Nathan pulled his knees to his chest, and kept a trained eye on him. He stared at the young boy in front of him.

“You know, you look so much like your mother, your real mother that is.....did you know I knew your mother” he asked. At the mention of his mother, Nathan’s hand instantly wrapped around the locket.

“She was a beautiful girl, very smart....maybe a little to smart for her own good” He continued. “I still remember the day I met her....I remembering her eyes” He stared into Nathan’s eyes, trying to see her in them. Looking away when the eyes staring back at him were very much like his own.

He had left soon after, telling him to get some rest, he’d soon have a visitor. Nathan hadn’t known what he meant by that, and as soon as He had closed the door behind him, Nathan had quickly scrambled to it, only to find it locked. He had crawled to the corner of the room, where he let the tears fall. Cautiously, he crawled over to the bed. Opening the sack, he saw a hamburger and fries. Closing it, he took it back to his corner and slowly unwrapped the sandwich. He took small bites as he took in his surroundings. Standing, he walked over to the only window in the room. There outside his window, was the Statue of Liberty. He recognized it from the pictures at school, and he also knew that the Statue of Liberty was in New York, which meant he was in New York. Fresh tears came to his eyes when he realized that he was far away from home, and his parents were gone. Sinking down to the floor, he balled up into a fetus position, his small hand wrapping around the locket, and he cried himself to sleep.

“Are you sure you don’t want to call the police” Max asked Beth, as he, Michael and Maria went around the house picking up the mess. They had barely made it home from the club when Michael had called her cell and told her that someone had broken into her house. She had gave him strict instructions, more like was adamant about him not calling the police.

“Yeah” she answered distractedly.

“Who would do something like this” Maria asked, stuffing the shards of glass of the lamp into a trash bag.

“Probably some punk teens, looking for something to get into” Michael grunted. “All done” he stood up, proudly examining the new lock he had installed.

“Well whoever it was, they didn’t leave anything upturned did they” Max said, looking around the room at all the damage in the room. “Beth are you sure nothing was taken....it seems strange that someone would come in here and trash the place, but not take anything” Max still wasn’t convinced that they shouldn’t call the police. Beth looked around the room.

“Yeah, everything seems to be here. Michael’s probably right, it was probably just some kids having fun”

“Well I know one thing, I don’t think I can stay here tonight, knowing whoever done this is still lurking around out there somewhere” Maria shivered. Michael wrapped an arm around her comfortingly.

“If you want, you can stay with me....you and Beth both” Michael offered.

“You wouldn’t mind” Maria looked up at him.

“Not at all” he smiled.

“I would like that” she buried her head in his chest.

“Beth?” both Michael and Max looked to her expectantly. Although Max knew Michael was only being a friend, but if Beth was going to be staying with anyone, it would be him.

“Thanks Michael, but I think I’ll stay here” she answered.

“What?!” they both shouted.

“Beth, you can’t stay here by yourself, it’s not safe” Max said, coming to stand in front of her.

“Max, I’ll be fine. It’s not like I haven’t been alone before” she waved his concern off.

“Beth, your house was broken into tonight..you want call the police..and now you’re determine to stay here alone...this is crazy” Max’s voice was rising, and he had to take a deep breath to calm his nerves.

“Max, I’m a big girl and I can take care of myself”

“Fine, then I’m staying with you”

“Max” she began before he cut her off

“No Beth, if you insist on staying her tonight, then I’m staying with you..” he ran his hand up and down her arm. “I just want you to be safe, please don’t argue with me on this” Beth stared up into his eyes, seeing the worry there, she quickly succumbed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beth sunk low into her tub. It had been three days since the break in, and true to his word, Max had camped out on her sofa, protecting her from the danger in the world. She thought it was sweet of him, but she needed some alone time, and it had taken her all morning to convince him to go home. He wasn’t happy about it, but he had left, assuring her that he would be back the next day. Maria was still at Michael’s, she was still a little shaken up over the whole thing. Considering her past, something like a little break-in was nothing. Sighing as the hot water massaged her skin, she rubbed the sponge over her body.
After her bath, she curled up and the sofa and read a book. Sometime during, she fell asleep, and the sound of her cell phone ringing startled her out of her sleep. Groaning, she searched blindly for it on the coffee table. She knew it could only be one person.
“Hello Max” she smiled into the phone lazily.
“How did you know it was me” he smiled guiltily.
“Because Michael and Maria have already called to check on me, and since only three people have my number, process of elimination” she stood up and stretched her body.
“I’m not calling to check up on you” he said feigning innocence.
“Umm humm”
“Really, I’m not...I called to tell you that I got off my rounds early tonight, and I wanted to know if you would like to come over and hang out” he said hoping he didn’t sound like he was checking up on her. “I’ll make your favorite” he tempted.
“Triple fudge sundae” she asked like a little kid.
“Yelp, with extra whip cream, just like you like it” he smiled, thinking that he would see her soon.
“I’m in, give me an hour” she smiled into the phone, before they said there goodbyes. Looking at the clock, and she noticed it was almost six, which meant she had enough time to watch the six o’clock news before she headed over to Max’s. She didn’t watch much television, but she did like to watch the news every now and then. Walking into the kitchen, she turned on the little t.v. that rested on the counter, and retrieved a glass from the cabinet. She listened as the news began to come on while pouring herself a glass of orange juice. Leaning against the counter, she listened as the reporters talked about nothing in particular. She listened as she began putting away the dishes from her and Max’s dinner last night.
“In other news” the female reporter started. “Friends and family are mourning the lost of their neighbor this evening” Beth listened with half and ear while she put away the dishes. “The bodies of Benjamin and Madison Arnold were found earlier this afternoon, when a concerned co-worker of Mr. Arnold came by when he hadn’t shown up for work in the last three days. What he found, was something he least expected” Beth was staring intensely at the television. When she had heard their names, she had turned to the television sharply.
“I don’t know why someone would do something like this...they were the sweetest people...so kind” he cried into the camera.
“Police aren’t releasing much detail except that the Arnold’s were killed execution-style, and that they appear to have been deceased for at least three days before their bodies were discovered. Neighbors say that the couple had a four year old son, and his whereabouts are still in question.. Police won’t comment on rather or not their son was also in the house. As you can see” the reporter pointed behind her “the police have the scene tape off for their investigation, and are searching for any clues that would lead them to the suspects who would commit such an act. One other thing...a neighbor, who would like to remain off camera, said that he had been inside the house before police arrived, and was disturbed by the message that was left on the wall. He said, and I quote that the message said “It’s time to come home Eliza.” not sure of what that means, but it leads us to suspect that this wasn’t just a simple robbery, but yet, an deliberate attack on the Arnold’s. I’m Julie Welling reporting live..channel 8.”
The plate she had been holding, slipped from her trembling fingers landing in a thousand pieces at her bare feet.
“No” she whispered, finding it hard to breath with the constriction of her lungs. Her mind raced frantically. ‘This couldn’t be happening’ she said to herself. How could he have found her.
“Nathan” she whispered, running out the house disregarding her bare feet. Jumping in her car, she drove as fast as she could, and when she finally hit the corner of Victory and Turner, she found it blocked off. Knowing there was no way she would be able to get in undetected, she drove over to the next street and waited. Some three hours later, the police had finally cleared out, and after waiting on some of the neighbors to place teddy bears and flowers on the front porch, Beth slipped quietly into the house. The house felt cold and distant. The place was covered with crime scene tape and powder, but she knew that they would never find anything, Hewas cleaver like that. Walking around the living room, she stopped at the fireplace and looked on te mantle were there were several pictures of Nathan and the Arnold’s. She picked one up, it looked to be their Christmas photo. She could tell they loved him very much, and her heart went out to them. They had been victims of something that had nothing to do with them, all they ever did was loved Nathan as if he was their own, and now they were dead because of it.....because of her. She looked at the opposite wall, and there in bright red letters were the words just like the neighbor had said.
It’s time to come home Eliza”
For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out how he had found her. She had been so careful, always covered her tracks, and yet he had found her....found Nathan. She wasn’t worried for Nathan, she knew he wouldn’t hurt him. No, he was only using him as bate for her, knowing that she would come. Looking around the house, she now knew that her break in wasn’t just some random act, it was him, and he was making her aware that he knew were she was, and there was no were she could hide that he couldn’t find. She knew that she would eventually have to face her past, but why now, why when she was finally happy. She had friends, and Max. At the thought of Max, she sighed heavily. She knew what she had too do. Taking one last look around the house, she slipped out undetected. Sending a silent prayer up for the Arnold’s, she climbed into her car and drove away.
~~~~~~~~~~

Max was frantic. Beth was suppose to be there two hours ago, and she hadn’t shown up. He had called her cell phone numerous times, only to receive her voice mail. He had called Michael at least twenty times and he said he hadn’t seen her. Michael had told him that he and Maria would go by there since they were closer, and give him a ring and let him know what was going on. That had been twenty minutes ago, and he still hadn’t heard anything from them. Max was kicking himself for leaving her alone like that. He knew he shouldn’t have listened to her, and insisted that he stayed. The phone rung, startling him out of his thoughts.

“Hello” he answered impatiently.

“Max” it was Michael, and from the sound of his voice, Max knew something was wrong.

“What is it..were is she” he asked in fear.

“It may be nothing..”

“What!” he shouted in the phone.

“She’s not here.....her car’s gone....a-and there’s blood” Michael grabbed Maria, who was pacing frantically and mumbling incoherently.

“Wh-what” Max stumbled. He could here Maria crying on the other end, and his heart sunk to the pit of his stomach and the tears welled up in his eyes.

“Max?” Michael called over the phone. Making a decision, Max stood up and began tossing on his shoes.

“I’m calling the police..” he said walking towards the door, grabbing his jacket, he swung open the door, jumping in surprise at the person standing on the other side.

“Beth”

Chapter 12

“Beth!” Max pulled her inside, and crashed her against him. Max heard Michael calling his name over the phone. “Michael...yeah she’s here...I’ll tell her....talk to you later....and Michael....thanks” Max pushed the talk button and tossed the phone on the sofa. His hold on Beth tighten, and he buried his face in her hair.

“God you had me so worried” he sighed, pulling her over to the sofa. “Where have you been” Max noticed that she had yet to look at him, but instead focused on her hands in her lap. Max took in her appearance, and noticed that she was only wearing a pair of jeans and a thin camisole.

“My god you’re bleeding” he said, looking down at her feet. Still she made no move, not even when he rose from the couch and went into the bathroom, returning with a first aide kit. Max lifted her feet, and placed them gently in his lap. With extreme care, he cleaned her feet, pulling out a sliver of glass that had been embedded in her left foot. Once he was finished, he applied some ointment on them and wrapped them in a light gaze. Throughout his care, Beth had watched him with a sad eye, never saying a word. Max picked up her hand, and rubbed it against his cheek.

“Beth talk to me” his eyes pleading into hers.

“Max” she whispered, unable to take the loving look in his eyes, knowing she was about to break his heart. Beth pulled her hand away from his, and sat up. She scooted to the end of the couch, unable to take his closeness. She lowered her eyes from his, playing with her hands in her lap. On the way over, she knew what she was going to do. She wanted to tell him the truth, she did, but now that he was sitting in front of her, his eyes radiating so much love, she couldn’t. She couldn’t bring him into the mess she called her life. She realized that over the months that she had known Max, he had managed to do something no other man had been able to do....he made her fall in love. It was because of that love, she was now going to have to leave him. Feeling herself resort back to her training, Beth steal herself from all emotions, and stood up.

“I just came over here to tell you that we can’t see each other anymore” she was amazed that her voice didn’t quiver, because her insides were definitely shattering. She moved quickly towards the door, but Max was much quicker. He didn’t know what was going on, but obviously whatever happened was causing her to throw her walls back up, and he wasn’t going to let her pull away....not now.

“Don’t do this Beth.....don’t pull away from me” he ran his hand up her arm, and stared deep into her eyes.

“No one’s pulling away Max......it’s just not going to work. It was fun while it lasted” Her voice was remarkably calm, and she saw the hurt flash across his face, but he covered it quickly.

“It was fun.” he asked in disbelief. “So everything we had meant nothing to you” Beth had done many horrible things in her past, but this was the hardest thing she had ever done. Not only was she ripping his heart out, she was shredded hers right along with it.

“Yes” she pushed past him, only to have his large hands grip her waist.

“That’s a lie and you know it.......what happened” his breath was hot against her neck, and his scent invaded her senses. She willed her feet to move away, but they had a mind of their own, and stepped back. “Talk to me Beth” he whispered against her ear.

“Max” her voice was small as she leaned further into him. Max turned her towards him, his hand running threw her long mane. Beth lean into his touch, savoring every little detail.

“Beth, whatever it is, I’m here for you” he leaned in so that their lips were only inches apart. “You can’t get rid of me that easy” he closed the distance between them. “I won’t let you run away from me” he took her lips into a gentle kiss. Soon the kiss grew more passionate, and her arms wrapped around his neck. Max pulled her in closer, his hand running up and down her back.

“Max” she moaned, as his lips left her mouth and traveled down her jaw, before settling on her neck, were he proceeded to slowly suck and lick at her soft skin.

“Humm” he mumbled, slowly and carefully walking them to his bedroom. Beth felt the wall press up against her back, and she briefly wondered how they ended up in his room. She knew she shouldn’t let this happen, it would only make leaving him harder. But the feel of fingers brushing across her sensitive midriff, all logical thoughts left her.

Max pulled his lips away from her long enough to pick her up and carry her to his bed. Gently and with tender care, he placed her in the center of the bed. He stared down at her lovingly, his hand caressing her cheek.

“You’re beautiful...you know that” Beth’s heart felt so full of love, she that it would explode. She sat up, intending to stop things before they could go farther then they already had.

“Max” she started, but he pressed a finger to her lips.

“Don’t...don’t say how this isn’t right, because it is. I love you Beth, and don’t know what happened to scare you....to make you push me away, but whatever it is, we’ll get through it” he promised.

“Max, it isn’t...” again she was silenced by his long finger.

“Shh, don’t talk....just feel...” he pulled her so that she was kneeling before him, and captured her lips in a sizzling kiss, leaving her completely incapacitated. His hands skimmed her sides, coming to rest on her hips, pulling her closer to his hard body so that no amount of air could separate them. Beth clutched her fist tightly in his shirt, her head light feeling dizzy from his intoxicating kiss. She could feel his hands gently massaging her hips, waiting. Waiting on her to take the first step in deciding how far they went. Never, had any man been so gentle to her, never let her be the controller in the bedroom. She was use to them having their way with her with no consideration of her feelings at all. Squashing those old memories from her head, she focused on Max, and the colossal of feelings he was evoking in her. Pulling away from his kiss, she took a moment to capture her breath. She laid her head against his broad chest. She felt his fingers massage her scalp, and she sighed heavily in content. Max nuzzled his cheek against her crown, his hand leaving their residence on her hips, to run smoothly over her back. Beth raised her head to stare into his loving eyes. Max rested his forehead against hers, staring intensely back at her.

His eyes spoke volumes to her. They held nothing but unconditional love. Love for her. Swallowing hard, his words echoed in her head “Don’t talk....just feel”. So that is what she did. Nervously, she raised her shaky hands to his top shirt button. She looked up at him with uncertainty, and he smiled down at her, and she returned to her task. What seemed agonizing slow, Max watched her fingers as they carefully slide each button opened. He had to refrain from moaning out loud when her nails made the tiniest weep over his chest. Once she had finished unbuttoning his shirt, she dropped her hands to her side. His shirt hung around him, exposing his golden chest. Beth inhaled deeply, taking in his marvelous form. She could see his tiny brown nipple trying to peak out, and smiled inwardly when it seemed to tighten under her gaze.

Slowly, she placed her hands on his stomach, and looked up, when Max flinched under her touch. Max felt like a jolt of electricity ran through him when her tiny hands touched his stomach. He leaned over and kissed her forehead, before lifting up and placing his hands over hers, edging her to continue. Beth took his cue, and continued her exploration once he dropped his hands. She ran her hands up the length of his torso, she was mesmerized by the hardness of his body, yet complete softness of it as well. Her fingers played with the groves of his six pack, before they crept up to his chest, her hands briefly brushing over his erect nipples. Throughout her exploration, Max had to remind himself that oxygen was a vital part of living. He released a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, only to inhale sharply when her palms grazed his sensitive nipples. He stared down at her, but her long locks were curtaining her face.

Beth’s hands rested on his shoulders, before pushing his shirt away, letting it fall uncaring onto the bed. Free of the restriction, she resumed her sweet torture. Everything in her reach she touch, driving Max completely insane.

“B-Beth” he couldn’t help moaning, when she pressed her lips to Adam’s apple, before suckling a little. She moved down farther, and kissed him in the valley of his chest, her breath hot on his skin. Looking up, she found his hungry eyes staring down at her.

“You’re beautiful” she repeated his words to him. Unable to resist, Max captured her lips once again, his tongue dancing naturally against hers. Beth felt the bed press up against her back, and she shivered at what was to come. Max settled himself over her, careful not to put too much of his weigh on her. Her leg was wrapped around his, as they continued their kiss. His hand ran the up her body, pulling her closer to him. Her fingers danced in his hair, as she desperately tried to get closer to him. Finally, the need for air pulled them apart. They were both breathing heavily as they tried to catch their breath. They laid there staring into each other for the longest time, just taking in the other.

Max cupped her cheek, “Beth, from the first time I seen you, I couldn’t get you out of my head. I knew that you were the one for me. I’ve never felt this way about anyone before...and I-I love you” his eyes glazed over with unshed tears. Beth felt her own tears coming, and she turned, kissing the palm of his hand. She noticed the puckered scar on his wrist, and brought her hand up and traced her finger over it. She had known about his attempted suicide, even still, he made sure to always were long sleeved shirts to hide his scars. Max tried to pull his hand away, ashamed of his moment of weakness. “Don’t” she whispered, holding his hand in a firm grip. Max relented, watching as she traced his ugly scar, and then she didn’t something completely unexpected. She placed a tender kiss over it. “Beautiful” she whispered. Max didn’t know how he ended up with her, but he thanked the heavens above for her. Soon, their hands began to move over each others body once again.

Max ran his hand up her side, taking the camisole with him as he inched forward. He felt his member tighten as his thumb brushed the underside of her bare breast. “Are you sure” he asked her. Even though it would probably kill him, he wouldn’t continue if she didn’t want to go through with it. Beth bit her lip, nodding shyly. Max felt his heart pounding in his chest as he sat up. He nervously brought his hand to the hem of her shirt. Slowly, as if unwrapping a precious treasure, he slid the camisole up her body, his breath hitched in his throat when her tan flesh was slowly being revealed to his hungry eyes. He didn’t know how he managed not to lose his self in his pants when her rosy nipples stared up at him, begging for his attention. He was finally able to remove the shirt completely, and tossed it on the floor. He sat back on his heels, taking in the sight before him. She was beautiful, a work of art.

Never had Beth been ashamed of herself. It had never mattered to her what a man thought about her body. Most of the time, they didn’t care anyways, she was just a quick screw for them. But with Max it was different. He was staring at her as if she was a rare jewel, something that required worshiping. She didn’t feel worthy of loving gaze. Would he look at her different if he knew of the many things she had done? When his stare grew to intense, she began to bring her arms up to cover her nakedness.

“Please don’t” the raw emotions in his voice halted her movement, and she lowered her arms back to her side, and closed her eyes. “Beth...look at me” Max whispered. Slowly she did as he request. “Please don’t....you’re the most beautiful person ever, please don’t hide from me. I want you to watch as I take great pleasure in pleasing you” Max sensed that her needs have never been met, and he wanted to change that. Beth felt the heat travel up her body at his words. Max smiled when he felt her summit to him. Her eyes were trained on him as she watched his hands come to the top of her jeans. Taking one more glance at her, Max undid her jeans, sliding the zipper apart. Her black panties came into view, and he could smell her hypnotizing scent as it drifted to his nose. He began to slid them down her legs, careful not to hurt her feet once he came to them.

She was now lying before him in only her underwear. Max ran his hands up her legs, hooking his fingers in her panties, before bring them down as well. He groaned, when her neatly shaved sex stared back at him. Starting at her feet, he slowly massaged her naked body, careful not to touch any of her sensitive area. He massaged her hips, his large hand smoothed over her trim stomach, up between her supple breast, before landing on her shoulders.

“Turn over” he whispered, and she nodded. Turning on her stomach, Beth held her breath, as she waited on his heavenly touch. She didn’t have to wait long. Max massaged her calves in slow circles, then moved on to her thighs. She inhaled sharply when one of his long fingers brushed up against her core. Max felt her wetness, and moan. He brought his finger to his nose, and inhaled deeply before sticking the digit in his mouth. Beth could hear his slight suckling, and she moaned loudly when she realized what he was doing, he was tasting her. Max was addicted, and knew he was going to have to have more of her soon. Continuing his exploration, he cupped her buttocks, and gently kneaded them in his hands. Once he was sure he gave them a proper massage, he trailed his hands up her back. His hand came in contact with a long scar, that ran started under her right shoulder blade and traveled diagonally to the center of her back. He ran his finger down it, a question in his eyes. He felt her stiffen beneath him.

“Max?” she whispered, afraid of his reaction. But Max didn’t answer, he only looked at the scar, wondering were she could have gotten it. He leaned over, and placed a tender kiss over it, as she had did his. She relaxed, and he continued massaging her body. She was feeling like jell-o from his magical hands. Max moved her hair aside, and began placing pepper kisses over her neck. She turned so that she could capture his mouth.

“Max” she moaned, needing him. Max felt her need, and turned her over. Without warning, he sucked a tight nipple into his mouth, running his tongue over it, before sucking it deep into his mouth. His other hand twisted her other nipple between his fingers, excited when her heady moans pleasured his ears.

“Oh god Max..” her fingers laced though his hair, holding him in place. Max moved down her body, wanting to get to his destination. His eyes locked with hers as he traveled down her body. Her chest heaved as she watched the fire in his eyes. Finally he was in nestled between her legs. She could feel his breath tickling her nether lips. Using his thumbs, Max separated her lower lips, marveled at the wetness glistening in the moonlight. She was so pink and pretty . Max peaked his tongue out, licking the length of her, purposely ignoring the swollen, throbbing bundle of nerves that peaked out from under its protective hood. The more she cried his name, the more he sought out to pleasure her.

“Max...Max...Max” she called out. Max could feel her getting close. He invaded her with his finger and finally latched on to her clit, sending her over the edge. She arched up into him as her orgasm ripped through her.

“Maaaxxxxx!!!” Max continued to lap at her, wanting her completely satisfied. “Max..p-please, I need you” licking his lips, Max crawled up her body. As soon as he was within reach, she pulled him down and kissed him hard, tasting herself on his lips. “Max please” understanding her need, Max tried to remove himself from her, but she wouldn’t relinquish her hold on him. Somehow, they had managed to remove his pants and boxers. He laid naked above her, staring deeply into her eyes.

“Ready” he asked her. She nodded. Max placed another kiss upon her lips. “I love you” he vowed, before he enter her. Their bodies moved fluently together. Each time he enter her, it felt like the first time. He couldn’t get enough of her, and he knew he wasn’t going to last much longer. Snaking his hand between their sweaty bodies, he began to rub her clit gently. Kissing her deeply, that was all it took, and she exploded. Her throaty cries and the tightening of her walls around his member, made him loose all control, and he went over with her.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Nathan sat quietly at the window. He looked down at the many lights that covered the ground beneath him. Someone had just left with his dinner tray. It wasn’t like he had eaten much anyway. He had been in the room for four days now. He wasn’t allowed out of the room, but he made sure that he was well taken care of. He had stopped asking when he could go home, realizing it was no use.
“Come child, it is late. You must rest” Nathan turned towards the voice. He stood, leaning against the doorjam. Nathan noticed that he had changed clothes since the last time he came in. Instead of the clean three piece suit, he was now wearing a pair of khaki’s and a Polo shirt. He walked further into the room, and sat down on the bed. Nathan also noticed that he was holding something in his hand, that he was idly running his fingers over.
“Come, sit with me....I don’t bite” he coaxed, seeing the child’s hesitation. Nathan stared at his outstretched hand, but soon sat next to him on the bed. He smiled tenderly at the boy, feelings that he hadn’t felt in years tried to push forward, but he quickly locked them away. Clearing his throat, he handed him the object in his hand, a picture. Nathan stared down at the picture in his hand. His hand instantly wrapped around the locket. It was a picture of his mother. She was dressed in a all white dress, that appeared to be flowing softly around her as she stood on what appeared to be a cliff. Her hair was whipping around her, and she was laughing with someone out of frame. Nathan thought she looked like an angel.
“What’s her name” he whispered. Shocked to hear the boy speak, he stared down at him. Identical gray eyes staring into each other.
“Eliza” he whispered, turning his eyes away from the boy’s emotional ones. Nathan stared down at the picture of his mother...Eliza. He wanted to ask him more, but thought better of it. Staring down at the boy, he could tell he wanted to ask him something, so he waited. When he didn’t say anything after several of minutes past, he stood.
“You should get some sleep” Nathan nodded, setting the photo on the night stand next to the bed, he crawled under the covers, pulling them securely around his small body. He watched him for a moment, before leaving the room. Nathan laid there listening to him leave the room, he heard the all to familiar click of the lock going in place, and he slowly closed his eyes, letting the imagine of his mother comfort him to sleep.
Beth sat down heavily in her seat. She ignored the throws of people around her, taking their seats and bustling about. To her surprise, the airplane was quite full for a midnight departure. The couple behind her were trying to come down their cranky toddler, and she wondered briefly why anyone would take their child on an airplane at midnight. Most kids wanted to be home in their bed, not cramped on their parents lap for a long, tiring trip. She turned and smiled briefly to the elderly lady that had just sat beside her. Soon, the flight attendant went around making sure all the overhead compartments were closed, and that all bags were pushed properly underneath each passengers seat. The fasten your seatbelt sign flashed above her, the plane slowly moved, its destination....her past. Sighing heavily, she slipped on her headphones and pushed play on the cd player. She hoped that the music would drown out the slowly dying beat of her heart. Looking out the window, she stared into the blacken sky, watching as the twinkling lights of California grew farther and farther away as the plane began to reach its altitude.
She turned up the volume of her player, but it was no use, she couldn’t get Max out of her head. She shivered slightly, still feeling the aftershock of his lips, as they traveled lovingly over her body. He had loved her so tenderly, almost like worshiping her. She closed her eyes, feeling her chest constrict as she thought about the way she had left him.
Beth stood at the foot of his bed, storing every little detail about him into her memory. She had laid there long after their love making, and listened to his light snore. His breath tickling her nape. She had felt the tears as they quietly slipped out, and she couldn’t help the turning in her stomach, knowing that what she had to do was only going to tear them both apart. Slowly as not to wake him, she extracted herself from his vice grip, freezing in place when he whispered out her name. She waited with bated breath as he squirmed a little, before settling back into a sound sleep. Quickly she retrieved her clothes, dressing as quick as she could. Now as she stood there, seeing the serene smile plastered on his face, the tears came at an alarming rate, and she didn’t make an attempt to stop them.
“I love you too” she whispered, before making her way to the door, without a second glance, she left. Fore she knew that if she had given him another look, she would have wanted to climb back in the bed with him, and forget her past, but she couldn’t. She had to face her past once and for all.
It had taken every strength in her body to leave him lying there. She had made her way home, thankful that Maria was still staying at Michael’s. She had packed her duffle bag, and a few essential things. She had made a phone call, and then she was gone.
“Excuse me Miss” Beth turned to see the flight attendant standing in the aisle. She removed her headphones. “Would you like something to drink or anything:” she smiled brightly, despite the early hour.
“No thank you” the lady nodded, and went to the next row. Beth put the headphones back on her ears, and leaned back into the seat. Closing her eyes, this time painful memories were the only thing that greeted her......
Chapter 13
A/N
I've decided to post Beth's past in a couple of chapters instead of one long post which would take me longer to post. At least this way I'm able to give you something, instead of you have to wait weeks for a update.
Warning....the next chapter contains mentions of rape and some things that some may be hard to read, and I apologize beforehand . Just a warning so that no one is shocked
Eight Years Earlier
Sixteen year old Eliza stood at the edge of her parents grave. Her fourteen year old sister Natalie stood beside her. Her hand clasped tightly in her own. They stood motionless as the men lowered their parents into their final resting place, side by side, like they had always been since they were twelve years old. Eliza thought that it was ironic that her parents always said that when they died, they wanted to go together, because neither thought they would be able to go on without the other. And they had, that is died together. The memory of their death was forever imbedded in Eliza’s head, forever playing like a bad movie in her dreams.
They had been driving home from one of their Friday night rituals of dinner and a movie. She and Natalie had been walking a little ahead of their parents, enjoying their ice cream cones, and trying to drown out the sound of their parents as they were engaged in a very heavy PDA a few feet behind them. The two girls laughed and giggled as they cross the street. Just as they stepped on the curb, they heard the loud screeching of tires, burning hotly against the asphalt. They both turned and the world seemed to go in slow motion as they watched their parents get ran down by the pickup. Someone was screaming, and it took Eliza a minute to realize that it was her own voice, being ripped out of her own raw throat.
“Mommy please wake up...please” she could hear Natalie crying next to her as they kneeled beside their parents motionless bodies. The driver of the pickup, a lady, straggled out of her truck towards them. As soon as she was on them, Eliza could smell the liquor on her breath, and it made her stomach curl. She don’t remember much after the lady had approached them, all she saw was red, and it had taken the cops to finally pull her away. Their parents....dead.
She held on to Natalie as she feels her growing weak beside her. Natalie, her baby sister. It was up to her to look after her now. They were going to live with a cousin of their dad’s and her husband in New York. They didn’t really know them, had only met them once at their Grandma Claudia’s funeral when they were younger. Now they were leaving the only home they knew, and going to a place they knew nothing about.
~~~~~~~~~~

“Lizzie....you asleep” Natalie whispered, as she knocked softly on the door.

“No, come on in” she whispered, not wanting to wake up Monica, their cousin. She had just straggled in at 2am, and she would be pissed if they woke her up. Liz pulled back the covers and Natalie quickly climbed in next to her. She wrapped her arms around her sister. “Couldn’t sleep” she whispered, brushing her hand over Natalie’s hair. She couldn’t see her in the dark, but she felt her shake her hand against her arm she was resting on.

“I miss mom and dad” she spoke softly, trying to hide the trembling in her voice. Liz sighed heavily behind her, knowing exactly how she felt. It had been a month since their deaths, but the grief hadn’t lessen at all.

“Me too Nat, me too” she whispered, the room grew silent as the two thought about their parents.

“Liz?”

“Humm”

“Do you think they’re in heaven” Natalie asked her.

“Yes” Liz answered quickly.

“How do you know”

“Because, mom and dad were two of the most kindest people there was. They were always nice to others. They never did anything totally wrong that God wouldn’t let them in” she smiled, thinking about how their parents always looked out for others. Her mom would give her last dollar to a homeless person, and never question what they were going to do with her dollar.

“Let’s just pray for them” she would always say. Their dad was always helping out the local shelters, mentor runaway teens. It had been plenty of times that she and Natalie would house a girl in their rooms until a bed at the shelter came available.

Natalie smiled too. She felt better now. If Liz said that they were in heaven, then she knew they were.

“Go to sleep...we have to get up early” Liz whispered.

“I love you Lizzie....promise me that you’ll never leave me” Natalie sobbed.

“Shh, I’m not going anywhere. I promise”

~~~~~~~~~~~
“You worthless bitch, why don’t you get off your fat ass and clean this dump up” they could hear Danny yelling though the door.
“Me...it’s not my fault, it’s those two little bastards...I told you that they would be trouble, I didn’t even want to take them in, but no, you were the one that insisted that they came to live with us, I barely even know them” Monica shot back, flopping down in the puke green armchair.
“Hey, they come in handy...well at lest their monthly checks do” Liz stood on the other side of the door, Nat, leaning against the door, staring up at her with tears in her eyes. Liz smiled tightly letting her know everything would be ok. They had been living with their cousin for close to a year now, and everyday things seemed to get worse. They would fight all the time, never paid any attention to them, and constantly had people over, spending their money on booze and drugs. Liz had taken a part time job after school so that she and Natalie could have the things they needed. She also would put up part of her check so they could leave and find a place of their own, but it was hard, no one would rent to a sixteen year old and her fourteen year old sister. So they were forced to stay until Liz could figure out what to do.
“Come on, lets go to the park until they fall asleep” Liz grabbed her sister’s hand and slung her backpack over her shoulders.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Liz saw the light creep into her dark room, before the door closed. She smiled, knowing Natalie would always find her way to her bed. She turned over to move the covers aside for her, but froze when she saw the shadow at the foot of her bed. The hairs on the back of her neck stood at attention, and she knew that it wasn’t Natalie that stood at the foot of her bed. She sat up quickly.

“Danny?” she whispered. “What are you doing in my room....get out” she hissed.

“It’s ‘my’ room, and I’m only letting you use it” he stated calmly. It was funny how she could see the whites of his teeth amongst the darkness. “Do you know how pretty you are Lizzie. Pretty Lizzie” he sung. Liz felt her heart started beating frantically in her chest. Her mouth grew dry as he walked around the bed and sat down. His hand brushed her cheek, and she stiffed, moving away from his touch.

“Ahh, don’t be that way...give your ole cos a kiss” he slurred, leaning in.

“No!! Get the hell out of my room” she demanded. He grew angry, and the next thing she felt was the back of his hand slamming against her face.

“You little bitch...” he grabbed a hand full of her hair and yanked her against him, causing her to let out a painful cry. “If it hadn’t been for me, you and that sister of yours would be sitting in some foster home..” he growled, his alcoholic breath hot against her face. Tears ran down her face, but she kept her eyes locked on his. “I let you into my home, and this is how you repay me...by being rude and disrespectful...I’ll show you...” his mouth came down forcefully on hers, causing her throat to burn with acidic bile. He cupped her breast roughly, pinching her nipple hard between his rough fingers. Her mouth opened in pain, and he took it as an invitation to plunge his slimy tongue in her mouth. “Yeah, that’s it....you taste so good....so soft...I’m going to show you how to please a man Lizzie” he ran a callous hand up her thigh, before forcefully pushing her knees apart.

“Please...don’t do this” she pleaded. Tears slid down her face, resting in the crevice of her ears.

“Shh, don’t cry Lizzie....it’ll be our little secret” his mouth covered her once again, and she fought against him, but he pinned her leg down with his heavy one, and he wrapped his hand around her throat. “Now don’t you go waking up Monica, we wouldn’t want her to come in here....now you be a good little girl or I’ll have to pay that sweet little Natalie a visit” the fight in her down instantly at the mention of her sister. She didn’t want him to hurt her sister. “That’s a good girl” he ripped her panties off. The sound of her tiny sobs and the nauseating sound of his zipper as he drunkenly slid it open, were the only sounds that bounced off the walls.

She closed her eyes tightly and bit her lip till she tasted blood to block the pain as he ripped forcefully though her barrier. She could feel herself tearing down there, but she laid there as still as possible, to afraid that if she moved, it would remind him that she was still there. Soon it was over, and he pulled his limp penis from her.

“You did great Lizzie” he smiled wide, as he stuck himself back into his pants and zipped up. He leaned over and kissed her cheek, before stumbling out of the room. She listened for the door to their room to close, and the moment she heard it, Liz shot out of her bed, ignoring the hot pain between her legs, and rushed into the bathroom and vomited. She threw up until she couldn’t throw up and longer. Then she turned on the shower to hot water, and stepped in. She grabbed the soap and scrubbed harshly at her skin. She scrubbed her cheek were he had kissed her. She even ran the soap into her mouth, trying to wipe out his sickening saliva. She scrubbed between her legs, wincing as the soap burned her now torn flesh. Looking at the towel, the suds weren’t white, but red from her blood. She washed until her skin was an angry red. Sinking down in the tub, she wrapped her arms under her legs, pulling them against her chest, uncaring as the water soon turned from scolding hot to ice cold. She stayed there, the water drowning out her tears.

~~~~~~~~~~
“What’s wrong Lizzie” Natalie asked her sister in concern.
“Don’t call me that” Liz snapped. Natalie sunk back at her sister’s tone. Her bottom lip began to tremble, and she couldn’t stop the tears as the made their way down her cheek.
“Shit..” Liz cursed herself seeing that she had hurt Nat’s feelings. She pulled her into her arms. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell at you...it’s j-just I’ve been really tried lately” she lied.
“You’ve been acting strange for the last few weeks.....what’s wrong, why won’t you talk to me” she cried against her chest. I was true, she had changed the last few weeks. For the last few weeks, Danny had been paying her a visit for her next ‘lesson’ as he called it. It was the same thing, he would come into her room, lock the door, and climb into her bed. He would do his thing, and leave. And each time when he was done, she would scrub herself raw. She had started staying late at the library to earn more money so that they could leave. She had also made Natalie meet her there so that she could keep an eye on her, not wanting her to be in the house alone with Danny. Monica had gotten fed up with her constant fighting with Danny, and had left a week earlier. In turn, he had been coming to her room every night since. At first he would only come when he and Monica would have a fight, and she would storm out, heading for the bar. Now that he didn’t have the threat of Monica walking in on him, he took advantage of it. She had saved closed to eight hundred dollars, it wasn’t much, but it was enough to keep them in a hotel for awhile.
“I’m sorry Nat” she whispered.
“I miss you...I already lost mom and dad, please don’t let me lose you” she sniffled.
Liz pulled her closer, running her hand threw her hair. “You won’t” she vowed. Natalie nodded against her shoulder.
“Come on, you have to finish your homework before we go home, I’m going to finish restocking these books, and then we can go” she smiled, kissing her on the cheek. Liz went to the History section and restocked the books.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey Eliza” Mrs. Easton smiled upon seeing her favorite employee.

“Hi Mrs. Easton. How are you today” Liz smiled.

“I’m good” they shared idle chit chat for a moment, before a few kids came up to check out some books.

“I’m going to go but my stuff away, and I’ll be right back to help you”

“Okay hon....” Liz want into the backroom. She walked in expecting to see her sister, since she was always there an hour before Liz arrived. She frowned when she didn’t see any signs of her sister. Tossing her backpack onto the sofa, and turned back out the room.

“Mrs. Easton, has my sister came in yet” she asked once she made her way back up to the front desk. She waited as the older lady checked out a mother and her young child, before sending them on their way with a friendly smile.

“She called earlier, said she couldn’t find you at school, but she said that your cousin David..no, Dennis....”

“Danny” she asked in fear.

“Yeah, that was his name. She said that he had picked her up from school, and not to worry”

“No” Liz whispered, running out the library.

“Natalie!” she called as soon as she rushed into the house. She ran all the way home, her heart pounding in fear. She knew something was wrong. Danny had never once since they’ve been living with them, offered to take them to school or pick them up. She knew that he had to be up to something, and she feared the worse.

“Liz!” she heard her sister’s cry. She rushed to Natalie’s room. Swinging the door open, she nearly threw up at the sight. Danny had her sister pinned beneath him, ready to penetrate her. Liz couldn’t see past her blinding anger. Picking up the nearest to her, she slammed it against his skull, vaguely hearing the sickening cracking sound. He slumped over on top of Natalie.

“Natalie!” she cried, pulling her sister out from beneath him. “Natalie” she called again, pulling her eyes away from Danny’s motionless body. She pulled down her dress, and talked softly to her, trying to calm her trembling form.

“Is-is he dead” Natalie sobbed. Liz looked over to were he laid.

“I don’t know..and I don’t care.....come on we’re leaving” Liz grabbed Natalie’s suitcase out of the closet, and began throwing clothes in it. All the while, Natalie stood at the doorway, her eyes fixed on Danny. “Come on” Liz pulled her to her room, sitting her down on the bed. Liz stuffed her duffle bag to its capacity.

“He-he..he was going....” Natalie couldn’t finish, she broke down into a trembling mess.

“Shh...it’s okay, he’ll never hurt you again..I promise” Liz brushed her hand over her cheeks. Standing, she grabbed a book from the bookcase, opening it, she retrieved the money she had been saving and stuff it into her pocket.

“Lets go” throwing their bags over her shoulder, she pulled them out of the house without a second glance back.

Chapter 14

Sliding the key into the lock, Liz wiggled it several times before it finally gave way and clicked open. She quickly ushered Natalie inside, close and deadbolted the door.

“I know it’s not much, but it’ll have to do for now” she soothed her sister as she scanned the dingy motel. The Dive motel wasn’t someplace you would want to stay with your family. No, it was far from the Disney Hotel. Instead of being greeted by Mickey and Minnie, you were hassled by Jake the wino and ‘Good time Debbie.’ It wasn’t the first place on Liz’s list when she was in search of a place for her and Natalie, but after being turned down by five other motels because she wasn’t of legal age, she had to settle on the Dive, who’s night man didn’t care if you were eighteen, as long as you had the fifty dollars a day, everyone was of legal age.

Natalie looked at the dirt colored carpet, mauve wall paper and water stained ceiling and frown. But she would gladly withstand it then having to stay in the same house as Danny. Just the thought of him made her shiver with fear of what he tried to do to her. Her stomach cringed, and she rushed to the small bathroom and threw up. Liz threw their bags on the lumpy bed, and raced after her. Liz held her hair back as she continued to emptied her stomach until there was nothing left for her to throw up and she was now having dry heaves.

“Shh, it’s okay...everything’s going to be okay” Natalie turned to her sister, and Liz pulled her into her embrace. Together, they rocked and held each other as their sobs echoed around the enclosed bathroom.

“Liz” Natalie finally broke the long silence after their tears had subsided.

“Humm” she answered, stroking the stands of Natalie’s hair. Natalie stoked her nail over Liz’s jean covered knee. She wasn’t sure how to asked the question swarming around in her head, but she needed to know.

“Di-did Danny.....did he hurt you” she couldn’t get her mouth to even say the word rape. Liz stiffened above her. She didn’t want to talk about Danny and about the horrible things he made her do, and what he almost did to Natalie. She lifted up over the grimy floor, causing Natalie to sit up and stare after her retreating form.

“Liz?” she followed after her, watching as Liz took to removing their clothes from their bags, and placing them in the worn down dresser in the corner. She watched her silently for a moment, noticing how her posture was a tense. Her body language and her unwillingness to look at her, was all the answer she needed.

“He did, didn’t he...why didn’t you say anything......why didn’t you tell me...” tears clogged her throat as she sunk down onto the bed. Liz stood stiffly at the dresser, her own tears making their way down her face, as she listened to Natalie soft cries behind her. Stealing herself, she turned and walked over to her sister.

“Hey” her thumb brushed away her tears as they cascaded down her cheek and she kneeled down in front of her. . “Don’t cry....it doesn’t matter anymore, he can’t hurts us anymore, I won’t let him” her voice was cold and full of hate for her so called ‘cousin’. “Come on, lets go find something to eat while I figure out what we’re going to do”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh my god....you scared me” Mrs. Easton held her hand against her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. Liz stood in the shadows at the back of the library. It had been a week since she had ran out, and she didn’t plan on every returning, but there funds were running low, and she knew she hadn’t picked up her last check from the library.
“Eliza, were have you been, the police, social services, they’ve all been here looking for you and your sister, what’s going on” she asked, seeing that Liz wasn’t going to abandon her spot from the back of the library. Liz had no doubt that everyone was looking for them, that was way they hadn’t been back to school or her to work.
“Your cousin Danny, he came in saying that you girls had ran away, and he was really worried about you and wants you to come home” Liz snorted at this. Danny, worried, she highly doubted it. He was just trying to make himself look good. He couldn’t as well say that they left because he was molesting them. No, he made sure he was the victim in everyone’s eyes.
“I been worried about you too.....are you in trouble....need help...” Mrs. Easton spoke, taking a tentative step towards the girl.
“I’m sorry for worrying you” she whispered, and she was. Besides Natalie, Mrs. Easton was the only other person she talked too. At school, she would stick to herself, never participating in any of the school activities.
“Eliza, what happened”
“It doesn’t matter...I just came to pick up my check please” Mrs. Easton nodded. Going into the back, she retrieved the envelope from her desk drawer, on her way out the door, she grabbed Liz’s backpack that she had left when she ran off.
“Here you go” she smiled sadly, handing her the bag and her check. “Are you sure there isn’t anything I can do.....were are you staying.....do you want me to call someone for you....” she fired questions, trying to figure out how to help the young girl in front of her.
As much as Liz needed help, she couldn’t risk it. If she was to ask for help, social services would most likely put them back with Danny, and if she told them what happened, there was a risk that she and Natalie could be separated, and she wasn’t going to let that happen. She shook her head.
“Thanks, but we’ll be fine” and as quietly as she entered, she slipped out the back door into the dark streets.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“...I could sell my locket” Natalie suggested. They were sitting in the park, the home for the last few weeks. They had ran out a money three weeks ago, and they had to find somewhere to go. Their first night, they spent roaming the streets, looking for proper shelter. They had found an shelter that luckily had one bed left in which they gladly shared. They had been staying there a week, until operator of the shelter started asking questions. Liz quickly packed them up and left. For the next several days they roamed the streets. Liz had sold what little she had, her walkman she had got for her sixteenth birthday and some cd. She didn’t get much for them, but it was enough to get them a decent meal. They had been sleeping in the park for a week or so. Liz would sit up at night, watching over Natalie while she slept curled up against her. She would use this time to think. She didn’t know how they were going to survive. She would cry softly to herself, clutching her locket in her, silently wishing her parents were there.

“No, you want” their parents had gotten them matching lockets the last Christmas they were together. Inside them both they carried a picture of their parents, and one of the two of them together. When their parents had died, Monica hadn’t let them bring a lot with them. She said that their wasn’t enough room for all their things, so they were only able to take their clothes, and a photo album that Liz had forgotten to grab in their hasty flight. Now all they had left was their lockets, and she refused to seal them.

“Don’t worry, I’ll figure something out...here, you can have the rest” Natalie looked at the sandwich Liz was thrusting at her. She shook her head.

“But you didn’t eat” as hungry as she was, Natalie knew Liz wasn’t eating much in order to make sure she had enough to eat. She was losing too much weight, and she was worried about her.

“It’s okay Nat, I’m not that hungry” she lied. She could go without eating, but she had to look after Natalie, and if that meant skipping a few meals, she would do it. “Go ahead...I’ll be fine” she reassured her after Natalie gave her an unsure look. Natalie finally accepted the sandwich, watching Liz closely as she took small bites.

“It’ll be dark soon...” she assess. Natalie nodded. They sat and watched the parents play with their little ones for awhile, before they packed it up for the night.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What the hell do you think you’re doing” the grocer grabbed Liz by the arm, yanking her towards him, his veins popping out in anger. She and Natalie hadn’t eaten in three days, and she needed to do something quick. Her parents had always thought them that stealing was wrong, but she prayed they understood. The store was small, but very busy. There was only two cashiers up front, and they were to busy to watch everyone that came into the store. She was only going to take a few things, bread, meat and maybe an apple or two, but in her attempt of being inconspicious, she failed to notice the security camera in the corner of the store.
“Let go of me” she hissed, trying to break free of his tight grip.
“Oh no, I’m sick of you little punks coming in here and trying to rip me off....I’m calling the cops” they were making a scene. and the other customers in the stare was looking at them. One girl watched the scene with a raised eye. He dragged Liz over to the counter, where he was going to call the cops on her.
“Chill Frankie, I’ll pay for whatever she took” a tall redhead said as she walked over to the two.
“You know this girl” he demanded. He looked down at Liz and back to the redhead. The girl looked at Liz and gave her a huge smile.
“Yeah, she’s my cousin” she told him.
“Your cousin?” he said, clearly not convinced.
“Yeah” she said, raising an eyebrow at him, daring him to question her farther. Frankie knew not to question her.
“Fine, but I don’t ever want to see her in my store again.....you got that” he snapped at Liz. She jerked her arm from him, and straightened her shirt. She watched as the owner retreated angrily to the back of the store. The girl had the cashier ring up the stuff Liz had taken, adding in a bag of chips, a gallon of water, and a couple of Kit-Kats.
“Here you go” she smiled, handing the bag over to Liz. Liz stared at the bag then up at the girl. “Well are you going to take it or not” she smiled. Liz looked at it, before walking out the store.
“Hey” the girl called after her, chasing her down the street.
“Come on” Liz grabbed Natalie’s hand pulling her out the alley she was waiting in.
“What happened....were’s the food....who is that following us” Natalie asked, as she tried to keep up with Liz’s face pace.
“Hey” the girl finally caught up with them. She turned Liz to face. “What’s wrong with you”
“Nothing...I don’t need your charity” Liz snapped, trying to walk around her.
“Look, it ain’t charity....I just thought you wanted the food” she hissed, dropping the bag at Liz’s feet. She hadn’t meant to snap at her. She had been seeing the girl and she assumed her sister, around the neighborhood for a while. She knew they slept in the park and sometimes she would watch the one from the store sit up at night, watching over the younger one. She knew what it was like having to find a place to sleep, food to eat. She had been by herself, she could only imagine what it was like trying to for two people.
Natalie looked to the bag on the ground, back to Liz, who was staring after the red head girl. “Liz?”
“Stay here” she ordered. Natalie nodded, picking up the bag, and searching thru it. She grinned when she came across the Kit-Kats. “Cool” she smiled, tearing open the candy wrapper. She leaned against the wall, and waited on Liz.
“Hey” Liz said out of breath, finally catching up with the taller girl. Sasha stopped and looked down at her. “Look I’m sorry for snapping at you...I mean you were just trying to be nice, right?” Sasha nodded.
“It’s okay....I’m Sasha” she extended her hand out. Liz took it hesitantly.
“Liz” she said, taking the other girls hand. Sasha looked down the street were Natalie was waiting. Liz followed her eyes. “That’s Nat” she answered the unspoken question.
“So you guys need a place to crash” Sasha offered.
“Nah, we’ll be okay.....thanks for the food, I just wish I could pay you back” Liz whispered.
“It’s no problem” reaching into her purse, she pulled out a slip of paper and pen. She scribbled something down, and handed it to Liz. “If you change your mind, I have a spare room with a soft bed. It isn’t much, but it beats sleeping in the park” Liz took the paper and slipped it in her pocket.
“See you around Liz” Sasha smiled and walked off.
“Yeah...see you around”
“Hey...will you turn that down, I think someone’s knocking at the door” Sasha shouted at her friends. she made herself to the turn. Swing it open, she was surprised to see Liz and Nat standing on the other side.
“Liz” she smiled. Liz shifted nervously in front of her. She hadn’t planned on coming over, but the police were cracking down on people sleeping in the park, and rounding up runaways. It had been a week since she had ran into Sasha, and if it hadn’t been raining, she probably wouldn’t have even showed up.
“I hope the offer still stands”
“Of course....of course, come on in” she grabbed their hands, pulling them inside. The other occupants in the room stopped what they were doing and look at them. “What the hell are y’all looking at, you act like you ain’t never seen girls before.......get up and make room” she shouted at the two men on the sofa. They quickly scrambled off the sofa. removing their empty beer bottles and ashtrays out the way. “Liz...Nat, these are my friends Brad and Steve, they were just leaving” she pointed out.
“We were?” Steve slurred.
“Yes, you were” she shoved them out the door, laughing at their attempts to stay.
“They didn’t have to leave on our account”
“Nonsense..” Sasha waved her off. “They were starting to get on my nerves anyways” she joked. “You guys hungry, I have some pizza still left over in the oven” Natalie looked to Liz, who gave her a slight nodded.
“I would like some pizza” Sasha noticed how they stood glued to each others side.
“Okay, I’ll just throw it in the microwave”
“That’s okay, I like it cold” Sasha grabbed a paper plate from the corner and retrieved the left over pizza.
“You sure you don’t want any Liz” Sasha offered. Natalie looked to her with a pleading look, and Liz accepted a piece.
“Here you go Nat, I think this should fit you” Sasha smiled, handing Natalie one of her old t-shirts. Once they were finished eating, Sasha showed them were they would be sleeping. “Liz if you want, I can take you guys things to the laundry when I take mine in the morning”
“You don’t have to do that” Liz felt like she was already intruding, and she didn’t want Sasha to go thru any trouble.
“It’s okay, I’m going there anyways, what’s a few extra pieces of clothes” she smiled. “I see you girls tomorrow. Feel free to make yourself a home”
“Wait, you’re leaving” Liz asked surprised.
“Yeah, I have to be at work in and hour” she slipped on her shoes. “but don’t worry, you guys will be safe here, I’ll lock up on my way out.....good night” she beamed.
“Night” they both said in unison. Liz sat down on the soft full bed, Natalie was taking a shower. She looked around the room. There wasn’t much in it, just the bed, and a small dresser in the corner with a t.v. resting on it. Liz picked up the remote and turned it on. She flipped threw the channels, settling on the cartoon channel. The door to the bathroom open, and Natalie’s freshly showered, stepped into the room.
“Man, that felt great” she beamed, jumping onto the bed, and lying behind Liz. Liz smiled, anticipating her own shower. it had been a while since they had a decent shower, only washing up in the public bathrooms when they could.
“I’ll be right out” she told Natalie. Natalie waved her off, too engrossed in watching Tom chase Jerry across the screen. Liz stepped into the inviting water. She had opted for a bath, considering she didn’t know when she would have another. The warm water massaged her tired muscles, and relaxed her worried mind. She took her time washing and conditioning her hair. Using the bath oil that was on the tub, she washed her body of the filth and grime that had accumulated there. Standing, she ran the shower to raise herself clean, and got out. She got dressed in the t-shirt and boxers Sasha had given her. She opened the door to the room, finding Natalie fast asleep. She tossed the towel that had been wrapped around her hair on the end of the bed. Running the comb thru her wet tress’, she pulled it into a ponytail on top of her head. Hitting the lights, she climbed into the bed next to her sister and wrapped her arm around her. She sighed heavily when he body settled, and enjoyed the soft mattress beneath her, a cry difference from the cold ground she had grown use too. Closing her eyes, she was asleep in seconds.
Chapter 15
Liz looked up from looking at the want ad as Natalie and Sasha strode thru the door laughing, She jumped up and retrieved the bag out of Sasha’s arms. They had been living with Sasha for close to two months now, and no matter how many times Sasha assured her that they’re not putting her out, Liz couldn’t help bu feel like they were a burden and were wearing out their welcome. She that by having them there, Sasha had to pay more for food and electricity, and she also knew that the landlord was starting to ask question about them. They weren’t suppose to be living there since they weren’t on the lease and all.
He had cornered her this morning in the washroom, and told her that if she and Natalie weren’t gone by the end of the month, all three of them would be thrown out in the streets. Liz couldn’t let Sasha lose her place over them, so she knew it was time for them to be moving on. The thing was they needed money to leave, wished left her three weeks to find a job and them a place to go.
Liz turned to her sister. “Nat, why don’t you go and finish those problems I gave you” Natalie looked at the seriousness in her sisters eyes, and knew that she was trying to get her out of the room, and she also knew not to argue. She grabbed her notebook off the table and headed towards their room, closing the door softly behind her. Sasha watched Liz out her peripheral vision as she out away the groceries.
“Sasha”
“Um hum”
“Um...uh, the other day you said that one of the girls quit.....have they found a replacement yet” she inquired. One morning Liz had been sitting up thinking when Sasha came in from work. They had talked for a while, and Liz had found out that she was a stripper. Although the money wasn’t always that great, sometimes she barely pulled in a hundred dollars, it was quick and it kept a roof over her head and food in her mouth she had told her.
Sasha sighed, sitting the box of cereal in her hand on the counter.
“Liz, what are you doing” she frowned.
“Natalie and I are leaving” she stated, grabbing the box of cereal and put them in the cabinet.
“What....why, I told you that you guys can stay as long as you wanted, it’s no problem”
“I know, but I can’t continue staying here without contributing anything. You’ve barely maintaining as is, Natalie and I are only putting more on your plate.”
“Would you stop! I never expected anything from you”
“I know, but I feel like a freeloader. It was never my intention to stay here this long, just long enough to figure out what our next move was going to be”
“And what have you figured out” Sasha bit out, upset over the hole conversation. Liz could tell this was quickly getting out of hand.
“Look, I appreciate you opening your home to us, but that’s the thing, this is your home. Natalie and I need ro find a place to call our own. Every since our parents died, we’ve been drifting, never feeling like we belong. I just want that, a since of belonging, independence” Sasha understood what she was saying. When she had been on the streets, she had lived on several of her friends couch, or in the streets. She had never stayed over long, feeling out of place. Her first night in her own apartment, she was so excited, felt proud. She definitely knew what she was saying. Sighing, she relented, pulling Liz into a sisterly embrace.
“Just promise me you’ll be careful”
“I will”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“How old are you” C.J. asked the girl that Sasha had suggested to take Lauren’s place. She didn’t look a day over fifteen.

“Eighteen” Liz lied. She was nervous, but she needed the money. Despite Sasha’s many attempts at talking her out of coming to the club, Liz was dead set on going, with or without her help. So she had agreed to talked to the manager for her.

“Is that right” he said disbelievingly. Liz nodded, seeing the unconvinced look on his face. She just knew he wasn’t going to hire her. C.J. studied her closely. He knew she was lying about her age, but he wasn’t worried about that, after all, he had hire Sasha when she was a few months shy of her seventh birthday. A lot of the girls that came through were young, looking for quick cash, before heading on their way. But Sasha and the rest of them had a body worth looking at, that could bring in customers. This girl was plain. She was skinny and shorter then what he normally looked for in dancers, and she barely had a chest worth glancing at twice, yet there was something about her that called to you. Reaching under his desk, he pulled out a small CD player, popping a CD in, he pressed play.

“Strip” he ordered. Liz nodded, Sasha had warned her that he might ask her to perform, so she had helped her, showed her a few moves, got her comfortable about dancing naked in front of people. She slowly she let the music enter her. When she was finished, C.J. was smiling widely at her.

“Sweet...be here tomorrow around eight” Liz nodded and quickly got dressed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Man, it’s dead out there” Sasha mumbled, sitting down at the vanity next to Liz. Liz looked over at her and smiled. She been dancing for two weeks now. The first night had been the worst. She had been nervous and scared. Someone had handed her a Hennessy and coke, and she had loosened up tremendously, With the liquor flowing through her, she didn’t mind when the man groped and poked at her during her lap dance. She had caught on fairly quickly, after that first night, and had actually gathered a few clientele.
“I know....I’m heading out earlier” Liz said, packing up her makeup bag. “Nat and me are going to catch a midnight movie”
“Be safe, I’ll see you in the morning” Sasha leaned over and pecked her cheek, before strolling back out into the club. Liz pulled on her sweater, and headed out the back door. Just as she stepped out, Alisha was pulling up in her new Lexus. Liz stood there and watched as she climbed out of the car.
“Well, if it isn’t little Lizzie” Alisha cooed strolling up beside her, flicking her cigarette onto the pavement. She had been calling her that from the moment she stepped in the club, regardless of how many times she told her not too. Instead of correcting her, Liz stared at the shiny new car. Alisha followed her line of vision.
“Nice huh....just picked her up this morning” she beamed. Liz agreed.
“How can you afford it, I know you’re not pulling in that kind of cash here” Liz asked. Alisha laughed.
“Girl please, this places is nickels and dimes. I couldn’t even afford a bike working at this place”
“Then how..” Liz pondered.
“Let’s just say, man aren’t going to give up any real money for a few second lap dance” she lit another cigarette, offering Liz one which she declined. “You got to give them a little something extra, something that will make them want to give up their hard earned cash, you know what I mean” Liz knew exactly want she meant. Alisha reached into her purse, pulling out a slip of paper. She scribbled something down on it and handed it to Liz. “Give me a call when you want to move up in the world” she winked, slapping Liz on the butt, before tossing the cigarette on the ground. “Later little Lizzie” she disappeared thru the back door. Liz stared down at the slip of paper in her hand, and saw Alisha’s phone number written on it. She stuffed it in her back pocket, before continuing her walk home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So...Candy says she saw you talking to Alisha the other night” Sasha said casually, applying her eyeliner. Liz narrowed her eyes at Candy across the room.

“Yeah...well Candy has a big mouth, and doesn’t know how to mind her own business” she snapped, standing to adjust her costume.

“Liz I told you she was bad news from day one. You don’t want to get involved in her shit” Sasha continued, not at all put off by Liz’s attitude. “You don’t want a label for yourself like she has” she stood up, and zipped the back of Liz’s outfit.

“How the hell do you know what I want” Liz was a little faded, and ut was making her very defensive.

“Fine, you want to be a high priced whore, I definitely won’t stand in your way” Sasha stepped closer to her. “Just remember this, when some fat bastard is sticking his nasty dick in you and you accepted his money, were will your pride be then” with that she stormed off. Liz picked up her shot glass, downing it in one swallow. Coughing violently as the warm liquid burned the back of her throat. But it didn’t burn as much as Sasha’s words.

~~~~~~~~~~
Natalie ran from room to room, giggling like a kid. Liz sat the bag of groceries on the counter and smiled as she watched her.
“Liz this is so cool...I can’t believe we have our own place” after their argument, things between her and Sasha hand been strained. One day she had been washing her clothes when she found Alisha’s number. She had called her up.
“Don’t worry Lizzie, I’m going to hook you up” things had became a blur after that phone call. He had been a suave fellow, the perfect gentlemen throughout the entire evening, but once the door closed, he became a different person. He had been rough, taking her anyway he want. It was his right, after all he was paying for it. Afterwards, she had went home, Sasha had been waiting for her. She had taken one look at Liz and shook her head sadly, before going in her room, slamming the door behind her. She had taken a long hot shower that night, and cried.
A week later, with the extra money coming in added to the money she had saved up, she had enough to afford a decent place for her and Natalie. Natalie was sad to leave Sasha, but the thought of having her own room again. ‘Don’t worry, you can always come to visit me’ Sasha hugged Natalie before turning to Liz. ‘That goes for you too’ she had pulled her into her arms ‘Please be safe.’
The slamming of the cabinets brought Liz out of her thoughts. “What are you looking for” she watched Nat, as she continued to open every cabinet door.
“Nothing, just looking” she shut the cabinet, and turned to her sister. “Liz, how are we going to afford this place” she asked worried.
“Don’t you worry about that, I’m taking care of that. You just worry about figuring out what color you want your room” she nudged her sisters shoulder. Natalie smiled, thinking already what color she wanted it to be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

C.J. smiled widely as he spotted who had just walked in the door. It was Friday night, there busiest night. All kinds of big shots showed up on Friday nights.

“Hey man, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you in here” C.J. shook the other mans hand.

“C.J., it’s good to see you too” he looked around the crowded club. “looks like the place is packed tonight.....too packed for me and my boys to get a table” he asked, pulling out a wad of cash.

“Never, we’re never to crowded for you. In fact, you can sit in the VIP room with me” he lead them up the stairs to a private balcony over looking the club below. Drinks were spread around as they talked about old times. His eyes caught sight of one of the dancers. She was small, and looked very young, She seemed out of place in there. She seemed comfortable as she danced, but he could tell that she didn’t like being up on stage. While all the other girls tried to steal the spotlight, she stood in the back trying not to be noticed. But he noticed, and he couldn’t keep his eyes off of her.

“Who’s the new girl” he asked casually. Taking a slip of his Scotch. C.J. smiled.

“Her name’s Liz, she started about a month and a half ago. She’s a little shy, but once you get a little liquor in her, she’s a real fire starter. She has grown quite a following” he smiled. He took in what he said, ignoring him once he went on talking about some game he seen the other night. His attention was elsewhere.

“Liz...C.J.’s looking for you, he’s upstairs in VIP” Candy informed her.

“What does he want” Liz asked annoyed. She was on her way out the door, she didn’t have time for his shit. Slipping the strap of her bag over her shoulder, she made her way back into the club, climbing the stairs up to VIP. There were several of man up there with C.J., all of them in suits and ties, a cry difference from the average Joe’s that usually occupied the club. They stopped talking as soon as she walked in.

“You wanted to see me” she asked nervously. The way one of the men was looking at her, sent a chill down her spine.

“Liz, come over here. I want you to meet someone” Liz took a timid step forward. “Liz this is a old friend of mine....Frankie Delucci....Frankie, this is Liz” he stood, offering her his hand. Liz took it.

“It’s nice to met you” she whispered shyly, tucking a strand of her behind her ear. He brought her hand to his lips, and kissed the back of it.

“Trust me, the pleasure is all mine” he stared into her eyes, and Liz found she couldn’t tear away from his remarkably gray eyes.

Chapter 16

Liz stood quietly in the corner of the massive ballroom. Alisha had told her about a client that needed a date to some formal party and was offering good money for an escort. Since getting their own place, Liz had managed to pull in enough money so that they could live comfortably. Natalie was starting night school so that she could get her GED, and Liz took Alisha up on her offer so that she could pay for the class and books she needed to study. Liz was bored and ready to go. Her date, Peter Hurls, was a real jerk, and she could see why he couldn’t get a date. She looked around the room, and saw Alisha as she engaged what seemed like a boring conversation. She walked out onto the patio, needing the fresh air.

“It can get a little stuffy in there huh?” a deep voice startled her from behind, and she turned to see someone sitting in a chair in the corner. Frankie stood, stepping out into the light. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you” he said sincerely. He couldn’t understand what is was about her that captivated him so much. From the first moment he laid eyes on her at the club, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. He had been surprised this evening to see her walk into the ballroom on the arms of Peter Hurls. He had watched her most of the evening as she tried to go unnoticed, but he noticed her.

“It’s okay” she hadn’t noticed him inside, but obviously he had noticed her. He stepped closer, standing next to her by the rail. They stood in silence, him eyeing her curiously.

“What?” she chuckled nervously, fidgeting under his instance gaze.

“Nothing..” he smiled, “You’re beautiful, you know that?” his voice was smooth, silky.

“Thank you” Liz blushed, tugging a strand of her hair behind her ear. Another silence fell over them as they stared at each other.

“Liz, there you are” Alisha smiled excitedly as she found her. “I’ve been looking for you all over..” she trailed off when she noticed Frankie standing there. Her eyebrows rose in surprise. She knew who he was, question was, did Liz know.

“Ladies” he raised his glass to them, “..I better get back inside...it was a pleasure seeing you again Liz” with that, he made his way back into the large ballroom. Liz watched him go with a curious eye. The moment he was out of sight, Alisha turned fearful eyes on her.

“What the hell are you doing” she admonished.

“What are you talking about?” Liz asked confused. Alisha grabbed her by the elbow and pulled are away from the doors.

“Do you have any idea who that was” she hissed?

“His name’s Frankie...I met him at C.J’s” she said clueless.

“Frankie....as in Frankie Delucci” Alisha stated as if that said everything. Seeing the still clueless look on Liz’s face, she went on. “As in the mobster Frankie Delucci...won’t hesitate to kill you Frankie Delucci...Liz, the guy is a criminal mastermind, a murderer....you don’t want to get tangled with him. The guy gives even me the chills” she shuddered. She had heard the stories on Frankie, and none of them were pretty. The Feds and any other law enforcement have been trying to pin him for years on charges of murder, drug trafficking, money laundering and God only knows what else. But every time a trail was set for him, witnesses mysteriously disappeared.

“No way” Liz retorted in disbelief.

“Yes way, and if you’re smart, you’ll stay away from him. He’s nothing but bad news” she walked away, leaving Liz to think about what she said. Liz walked back to the large house. She stepped back into the ballroom. She stood there, watching the people as they mingled about. Her eyes landed on Frankie. She couldn’t believe the things that Alisha said about him. He didn’t look like the mobster type, with his boyish look and gorgeous smile. She looked up and found his piercing gray eyes staring back at her. She felt the heat graze her cheeks at being caught staring. He smiled brightly, giving her a wink before turning his attention back to the gentleman before him, his eyes returning to her occasionally throughout the rest of the evening.

“I can’t believe this” Liz frowned in frustration as she stood outside the large house. Her ‘date,’ had gotten himself drunk out his mind, and was crashed out on the rec. room pool table. “This is just great” she mumbled. She was glad she insisted that he paid her up front, otherwise, she doubt she would have gotten her money. The good thing was she could leave without worrying about bedding him later, but the only thing was, that he had been her ride home. Alisha had already left, something about ‘overtime.’ Liz didn’t even want to think about what that entitled. Now she had to find a way home. She shivered slightly when the night air nipped at her, and she rubbed her hands up and down her bare arms to warm herself up. Suddenly she felt something warm wrapped around her shoulders, and she jumped.

“I’m sorry...I didn’t mean to startle you...again” Frankie chuckled. “It’s just..you looked cold” he smiled down at her.

“It’s okay, really....um, thank you” she whispered softly.

“Are you okay? You seem...agitated” he observed, his eyes never leaving her face.

“I am..a little” she confessed. “It looks like I’m stranded” she admitted shyly.

“Well, we can’t have that” he turned to some men, that Liz hadn’t realized was standing there, and said something to them, before turning back to her with too died for smile on his face. “Shall we” he gestured to the black Lincoln Towncar that pulled up in front of them? Liz looked at the car, then back to him warily.

“Don’t worry, I don’t bite” he teased.

“I..um..I..” she stumbled out.

“Hey” he spoke softly to her, “I just want to make sure you get home safely” he said, seeing her hesitation. Liz stared up at him, searching his eyes. What she saw there was sincereness.

“Okay” she let him led her to the car, where he opened the door and waited for her to get in. After she told him where she lived, the drive was done mostly in silence. Liz looked out the window into the darkened night, her mind a million miles away.

“Are you okay” the sudden sound of his voice startled her, he noticed? “Do I make you nervous” he asked once she turned to him?

“No” she spoke honestly. He didn’t make her nervous at all. In fact for some reason she felt completely at ease around him. “I was just thinking.” He smiled, nodding his head in understanding.

“So,” he started after another moment of silence, “Liz, is that short for something....Elizabeth perhaps?” he asked, wanting to find out all he could about her.

Liz winkled her nose in disgust. She simply despised the name Elizabeth. “It’s definitely not short for Elizabeth” he laughed heartily at the frown on her face.

“Okay..point taken” he held up his hands in surrender. “So if it’s not short for Elizabeth, what is it short for huh?”

“Eliza...it’s short for Eliza” she smiled.

“Eliza” he repeated, testing the name over his lips. “I like it..it’s sophisticated...it suits you Eliza” he gazed at her, and Liz found herself once again drawn to him.

“Thank you for the ride” Liz smiled they stood in front of her building.

“It was my pleasure” he assured her.

“Goodnight” Liz smiled, turning to walk into the building, when she remembers she was still wrapped in his jacket. “I’m sorry” she blushed embarrassed, taking it off and reaching it to him.

“Keep it. You can give it to me tomorrow” he smiled.

“Tomorrow?” she asked confusingly.

“Yeah, when you met me for lunch” he stated boldly.

“I..” she started, not sure what to say.

“Oh come on” he playfully pouted. “Please” he added when he saw she was about to decline.

“Okay” Liz finally relented after several moments of contemplation.

“Great” he smiled brightly. “I’ll send a car for you.....goodnight Eliza.”

“Goodnight” he watched her as she made her way into the building, before finally driving off.

~~~~~~~~
Liz slid on her sneakers, and checked her pockets. Seeing that she had enough change on her, she made her way out the door and down the stairs. She came to a halt when she saw Frankie leaning against a motorcycle dressed in a pair jeans and T-shirt, something she wasn’t privileged too often. Despite the many warnings from Alisha, Liz had been seeing him since that of the Children’s Benefit. As promised, he had sent a car for her, and the driver had taken her back to one of his estates in Staten Island. He had, had an immaculate picnic lunch set up for her out under a large oak tree on the grounds. Since then, they’ve been spending a lot of time together. Liz didn’t know what it was, but something about him captivated her....stroked her curiosity.
“What are you doing here” she wasn’t upset, just shocked? Usually if they had something planned, he would send for her, never coming himself. Something occurred to her. “We didn’t have anything planned, did we?” thinking she had forgotten.
“No..I just wanted to see you” he smirked. “You busy” he asked? Liz looked down at her watch. She was on her way to pick up a few things for the house, before she went to meet Natalie at the center.
“Actually, I was just on my way to the store” she watched his face fall.
“Can’t it wait” he pouted?
“Sorry, but I have to go pick up Nat afterwards” Frankie nodded. Although he had heard a lot about her sister, he had yet to meet her.
“How about you and Nat join me tomorrow for lunch. I would really like to meet her” he asked hopefully. Liz bit her bottom lip in thought.
“Please” he pleaded. A small smile started to play itself over Liz’s lip, and she nodded. “C’mere” he coaxed, and she inched closer. As soon as she was within his reach, he wrapped his arms around her waist, and kissed her. “I’ll see you tomorrow Eliza” he threw on his shades, and wrapped his legs around his bike. He gave her a wink, before kicking the engine and riding off.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Frankie snapped another picture of her as she laughed and danced about with Natalie. Lowering the camera, he watched as the wind picked up her hair and whipped it around in a provocative dance. Her white dress switched about with a gentle sway. She was beautiful. Leaning back against the tree, he took the time and just watched her. His moment of piece was interrupted when Sean whispered something in his ear. With a frown, he stood to his feet.

“What’s wrong” Liz asked, noticing the frown on his face.

“Nothing, I just have some business to attend too” he smiled. “But in my absence, Sean here will keep you entertained” Sean wanted to protest, but knew better. He was new in the family, and he didn’t want to cause anything to get on Frankie’s bad side. He was only a kid, barely sixteen, but his brother has been Frankie’s right-hand man for years, and had gotten him a job as a runner. He was doing his best to gain respect from Frankie, who thought he was just a snot nose kid. He stared at the two girls before him. Eliza, the oldest, everyone knew that she was Frankie’s and he made it known. His eyes drifted to Natalie. She was shy, they both were, but there was something about her that he found intriguing.

“I’ll see at the house” he leaned over and kissed her cheek. Liz nodded and watched him walk back to the house.

~~~~~~~~
Liz landed hard on her back, the wind temporarily knocked out of her. Frankie stood over her, his sword in hand.
“You have to concentrate Eliza” he ordered, pulling her roughly to her feet. Liz wiped the sweat from her brow, and barely had time to dodge as he swiped his blade at her. He had been teaching her self defense for the last couple of months. Liz hated it, because it brought out a side of him that she didn’t particular care for. He was always cold and harsh. She had become an excellent marksman and fluent in martial arts.
Frankie swung at her, this time dodging her blade, as it whizzed past his face. A smile graced his lips.
“Much better” he nodded approvingly. Again he lunged at her, but she moved gracefully, bringing a roundhouse kick to his stomach. He doubled over, trying hard to capture his breath. “I think that’s enough for today...why don’t you practice your meditation” Liz nodded. She sat in the middle of the large room and closed her eyes. She listened to her surrounds, becoming one with them. Frankie waited, then as quietly as possible, he crept upon her. He raised the blade, but before he could connect, her hand shot out and caught his hand. Her eyes snapped open to see the satisfied smirk on his face.
“Excellent”
~~~~~~~~~~~

Liz crept quietly through the large house. She had just left Natalie, who was gushing over Sean. She had to smile, happy that her sister was happy. She made her way down the stairs to Frankie’s study hoping to find him there. She wanted to let him know that they had to return home soon. When she got to his study, the door was ajar slightly. Forgetting to knock, she pushed it open.

“Stand him up” Frankie ordered. The man did as instructed, and hoisted the badly beaten, bloody man to his feet.

“F-Frankie..p-please” the man begged, blood spurting from his ruptured lips. Liz gasped, turning their attention to her.

“I-I..” she couldn’t find her voice. Frankie walked over towards her, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

“What are you doing here Eliza” he whispered as he stood behind her, noticing her eyes fixed on the man? His hands crept up her arms, walking her deeper into the room. He could feel her tremble, and he rubbed her arms to soothe her. He captured her hand in his, and pulled them so that they were now standing in front of the broken man.

“You thought you could steal from me” his voice was hard, scary.

“F-Frankie..I w-would never do that...you know me man” he cried in an attempt to save his life.

“I thought I knew you. You’re nothing but a snake that came into my family and stole from me” he sent his hand across his face, spraying blood across the room. He felt Liz flinch beside him, and he turned to her.

“What do you think I should do with him Eliza” he asked with an eerie smile? Liz stared at the man, who was begging her with his eyes for salvation. Unable to take his stare, she lowered her eyes. She knew that if she said release him, he wouldn’t do it, so what was the point. Motioning to one of his men, Frankie gave the order. “Watch” he demanded to her, lifting her head to watch as Ray slit the mans throat.

“No” she whispered, tears filling her eyes as she stared into the lifeless ones of the man, blood oozing out of his wound. Feeling the bile rise in her throat, she pulled her hand free and ran out the room. As soon as she was in the hall, she dropped to her knees, and threw up.

Chapter 17

Eliza didn’t even flinch when the gun went off inches from her head. Stepping over the fallen body, she gathered the suitcase full of money and the identical one next to it full of cocaine. taking another quick look around the room, she motioned to Ray, who was standing by the door. He quickly relieved her of the suitcases, before following closely behind her. He couldn’t help but watch with a tiny smirk as her leather clad ass swayed gracefully in front of him.

“You better watch it” Leroy chuckled, “if Frankie caught that look you just gave his girl, you’ll be missing a certain anatomy” he warned. Ray only nodded, before tossing the two suitcases in the truck of the car. Liz slid smoothly into the Towncar as Ray climbed in after her while Leroy took the drivers seat. Ray’s cell rung and he instantly answered, knowing that it was Frankie.

“Yeah...yes we got it...no, no trouble at all” the conversation went on for a few more minutes, before he turned to her. “He wants to talk to you” he said, holding the phone out to her. Liz stared at the phone with disgust, before sighing and taking it from him.

“Hello” her voice was calm, never reflecting the tiredness that was truly there.

“Ah Eliza...” Frankie’s smooth voice cooed in her ear, “Everything went well?” Liz resisted the urge to roll her eyes at his redundant question. Didn’t Ray just tell him just as much. She knew better then to voice her irritation. Instead she gave him the information he desired.

“Good...good. I will see you shortly Eliza” and with that the line went dead. Liz stared at it momentarily, wanting to toss it out the window in frustration. Flipping it closed, she tossed it to an unexpected Ray before turning back towards the window. It was late, the streets were practically deserted. Maybe that was because no decent, respectable human being would be out this late. Only low lives and up to no good doers like herself. Her mind drifted to the mess she now called her life. She snorted inwardly thinking that her parents must be turning over in their graves at what she had become.

She’d been with Frankie close to two years now. Every since that night she had watched Ray slit that mans throat, she had been witness to multiple murders, drug deals and near death beatings. She had tried to escape, to get Natalie and herself as far from him as possible, but he had found her. For her efforts, he made sure she herself had been involved in numerous murders and drug deals, becoming Frankie’s leading trade off person. He had made sure she too had blood on her hands, knowing that if she was to ever try to leave and go to the police, she would go down with him, because she was in just as deep as he was. Leaving no choice for her but to stay.

Soon, Leroy was pulling up to the large estate. He quickly stepped out, opening her door for her. “Madam” he teased with a bow, but Liz was tired and was up for his usual comical side. Instead, she made the trek up the stairs into the massive house, Ray and Leroy following dutiful behind her. Ray pushed forward, heading into Frankie’s study were she knew he was waiting.

“Eliza” she heard his silky voice as she tried to escape upstairs to her room. She froze on the stairs debating rather she should keep going and pretend she hadn’t heard him. In the end, she knew better and she reluctantly made her way back down and into the study. She watched as he finished up his business with Ray, before dismissing him and turning his attention to her. Frankie took in her leather clad body. The way the shiny material hugged her curvy hips, complimenting her full breast. Her hair was slicked back from her face giving her the look of an Amazon warrior. She was hot, and turning him on. He walked around her like a tiger does his prey, smiling inwardly at the way she straightened her back and kept her head held high. No longer was she the shy, quiet little girl he had first laid eyes on two years ago at C.J. No, she was a woman now, one that had seen things and done things that no one would expect from her.

“You wanted something” she asked with a hint of annoyance in her voice. He stopped behind her, pulling her roughly against him.

“Yeah...you” he palmed her breast hard, biting the soft flesh of her shoulder. “I hear you were magnificent tonight...I knew I’ve taught you well” his fingers were already working the tie of her leather corset, revealing her mounds for his eyes to feast on. Liz knew the quickest way to get to her room was to let him have his way. So she did. He took her hard and fast against the study wall. While he did his thing, Liz would think of ways she could escape. To get away from this life.

As if reading her mind, he whispered hotly in her ear, “You are mine...I’ll never let you go.” with that, he released his seed into her, grunting and groaning as his mouth attacked hers. Afterwards, Liz slid her feet back to the ground and fixed her clothes.

“Rest well My Sweet Eliza” he cooed, placing a kiss to her forehead. She resisted the urge to shutter at his affection. What little feelings she had for him had died that night he made her watch that mans execution. Now, all she felt was hate and disgust. Not only for him, but herself as well. Making the journey up the deep spiral stairs, Liz checked on Natalie before heading to her own room were she took a long hot shower and falling into a restless sleep.
~~~~~~~~
Liz smiled as she watched Nat prance around in front of her. They were enjoying a quiet picnic alone. It had been a while since they had spent any time together, and Liz was just happy to be away from Frankie’s watchful eye.
“Isn’t it a pretty day Liz” Natalie sighed as she flopped down beside her sister and rested her head in her lap. Liz looked around at the gentle spring afternoon and smiled.
“Yeah...beautiful” she whispered in awe as she combed her fingers through her sisters long mane. Nat stared up at her sister, noticing the slight smile on her face. But the thing that caught her attention were her eyes. They no longer held joy or laughter, just pain and darkness. She wished there was a way she could bring the old Liz back. The one before their parents died, before she was forced to do things against her will by Danny, when they would laugh and horseplay with their dad. But those times were over. Natalie didn’t pretend to not know what Frankie was having her sister do. She knew that everything Liz did was to keep her safe and taken care of, but Natalie was determined to get her away from Frankie.
“Sean asked me to marry him” she announced, filing her other thoughts away for the moment. Liz looked down in surprise.
“Married...you’re only seventeen Nat” Liz quirked an eyebrow at her.
Natalie shrugged her shoulders, playing with a blade of grass. “Mama and daddy were seventeen when they got married” she stated matter-of-factly.
“Yeah, but those were different times back then...” Liz began. She was about to go into a whole list of reasons why they should wait, but the plea in her sisters eyes made her swallow her response and sigh heavily, “Are you sure this is what you want?”
“More then anything” Nat answered honestly. Her sisters blessing meant everything to her.
“Okay” Liz smiled, genuinely happy for her sister. Natalie beamed happily, lifting up to embrace her sister.
“Thank you Liz” they sat in silence. Natalie laced their fingers together, and rested her head on Liz’s shoulder.
“Sean’s leaving the family” by family, she meant leaving Frankie. “He doesn’t want this life anymore...he wants us to move somewhere were we could build a family together...the thing is, I can’t go without you Liz...I won’t leave you here” tears gathered in her eyes as her hold on her sisters hand tightened.
Liz turned and kissed her temple. “Don’t you worry about me...Sean’s a good person, I never thought he fitted in with Frankie and his people” Liz smiled, “You just go and be happy...let him love you like you deserve...that’s all I ever wanted for you was to be happy.”
“I am...I’m very happy, but I’d be even happier if you would say you’ll come with us” Natalie pulled back to look her sister in the eyes. “Say you’ll come with us Liz, please. I won’t be able to be happy knowing you were here with Frankie and having him doing god knows what to you” she lifted her hand to the bruise on Liz’s cheek. Liz looked away, refusing to let the tears that were stinging her eyes fall. Two days ago, Frankie had hit her because one of his deals had went bad, and she allowed one of the man to get away.
“Please Liz...please say you’ll come with us” Nat waited with bated breath as Liz fought internally. Finally after what seemed like forever, Liz swept her hand up in her own and nodded.
“Okay...I’ll come with you” Liz fell over with laughter as Natalie lunged forward and pulled her into a big bear hug.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I just don’t understand why you have to do this...” Natalie pouted as she sat in his lap. Sean ran his hands through her hair, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“I told you Nat...this will have us set for life. We won’t ever have to worry about anything ever again” he tried to assure her.

“I just don’t think it’s wise...I just have a bad feeling about this” her voice grew hysteria at the thought of something happening to him.

“Shh, don’t worry...nothing’s going to happen to me I promise” she nodded slowly, allowing him to gather her in his strong arms. “Now, give me some suga” he teased, causing her to giggle.

~~~~~~~~~~
Liz awoke from her dreams with a start as the plane made a jerky attempt at landing.
“Are you alright dear” the elderly lady next to her asked?
“Yeah…thanks” she mumbled, waiting on for the flight attendant to announce they could exit the plane. Liz quickly removed her bag from the overhead compartment and left the plane. Standing out on the terminal curve, she hailed a taxi.
“Where to miss” the driver asked?
“Hell” she mumbled, staring out the window as she mentally prepared to face her past hopefully for the last time.
Chapter 18
The taxi pulled up in front of the RestHaven Cemetery, the driver fidgeted in the front seat. “Are you sure this is where you want to be” he asked, taking in the dark and scary looking graveyard? Liz looked out the window into the long stretch, feeling her heart constrict painfully. It had been years since she had been there and she felt the sadness and shame roll over her.
“Yeah” he took another cautious glace, before eyeing her in the rearview mirror.
“Do you want me to wait for you” Liz could tell by the look in his eyes that he didn’t want to wait in front of a dark cemetery?
“That’s okay...I’ll be fine, thanks” reaching into her bag, she pulled out some money and handed it to him, “keep the change” she said before exiting the car. Stepping out onto the pavement, she adjusted her bag beginning the long familiar path through the cemetery.
Finally she came upon the small secluded area, which coincidently had light from the streetlight overhead. She just stood there momentarily, just staring at the black marble headstone.
Natalie Claudia Parker
1980 -1997
Beloved Daughter,
Sister and Friend
Tears formed in her eyes as she sank down to the grass. Liz picked at the ugly weeds that dared to grow around her grave, tossing the stray rocks over her shoulder. She noticed the wilted flowers resting at the foot of the headstone...Tulips...her favorite. She knew only one person could have placed them there.
“Hi” she managed to choke out through her tears, “I know it’s been awhile...a-and I’m sorry...but if you’re watching above with mama and daddy, I know you know why I haven’t been here” she whispered, getting more comfortable as she played with a strand of grass. “Oh Nat, he’s so beautiful...I-I wish you could have been here to see him...I named him Nathaniel...after you of course” she smiled wistfully, remembering how they always said they would name their firstborn after each other. “God...I’m so sorry Nat...I never meant for any of this to happen...I-I just wanted you to be safe...to be taken care of...I-I never thought that when I hooked up with Frankie that it would cause me you...” another sob escaped her throat, but she managed to control them. Once she was able to get herself under control, she continued, “I met someone...” she smiled thinking of Max, “His name’s Max...and he’s the sweetest...kindest...gentle person I’ve come across in a long time. He says he loves me...but how could he love someone that he really doesn’t know” she asked painfully, “Would he still love me if he knew what I was capable of...would he still love me if he knew that I, Eliza Parker was nothing more then a high priced whore and murderer” she bit out with disgust. “I love him too...but it could never be. I-I wish I could just go back...back to the time when mama and daddy were still alive, and we were all just one big happy family...but you’re all gone...the only one I have left is Nathan...I have to get him back...” she swiped at her tears, standing to her feet, “if you’re out there Nat...please watch over him for me...keep him safe until I can get to him...” she kissed her fingers, running her hand over the cool surface of the headstone, “I love you...say hi to mama and daddy for me” with one last glace at her sister’s grave, Liz shrugged on her bag and left.
~~~~~~~~~~

Looking up at the sign, U-store-it, Liz pulled out a set of keys and walked down the row of storage buildings before coming to the number 85. Unlocking the door, she gave it a good tug, and the chains creaked from lack of use. She was immediately assaulted with the musky smell of the room. She closed the door behind her, searching in the dark for the light switch. Finally finding it, Liz turned on the light, looked around the room. Everything was just the way she left it. Walking around the room, she removed the varies tarp’s around the room. Suddenly, she came upon the old safe behind several boxes. Pulling it from it tiny space, she placed it on top of the small table in the room. Searching the keys, she slid the right one into the lock and it opened with a loud click. Opening the safe, she shifted through the stacks of money before her hand collided with the small packaged. Lifting it out, she opened the envelope, emptying the contents in her hands. Flipping the disk over in her hand, Liz sighed, thinking of how much trouble that such a small object could cause. Slipping the disk into her jacket, she continued to shuffle through the things she had left behind in the storage years ago. It took her two hours to finally finish going through the mass of things. Taking one last look around, Liz removed the last tarp that covered her old bike. She had one destination in mind as she climbed onto her bike. She just hoped that she didn’t run into any of Frankie’s goons before she was ready too.

~~~~~~~~~~
Sean stumbled into his apartment, dead on his feet. He made his way into his bedroom where he began to undress in the dark. He had just finished unbuttoning his shirt when the hairs on the back of his neck suddenly stood at attention. His hand instantly reached for the piece he kept in the waist of his pants, he turned swiftly as the light flicked on.
“You’re getting sloppy” her voice was smoothed as she sat in the armchair in the corner of his room. Sean could only stare in shock at her. “Aren’t you going to say something, or are you just going to stand there with your mouth hanging open” she raised an eyebrow at him?
Finally finding his voice, Sean lowered his weapon, an angry scold dancing across his face, “What the hell are you doing here” he demanded, stalking over so that he was standing directly in front of her?
“Wasn’t exactly the welcome back I was expecting” Liz stated dryly.
“I’m sorry I didn’t welcome you with open arms” he stated sarcastically, “but do you have any idea the repercussions your turning back up here is going to cause?” He began to pace back and forward in front of her like a caged tiger. Liz just watched intently.
“God Eliza, why didn’t you just stay away...do you know what I’ve been through to keep you safe...Frankie has a contract out on you...and now you’ve walked right back in here...he’s going to kill you” he sighed tiredly.
“I had to come...he has my son” she glared, standing in front of him.
“Your son? What son?” he asked confused.
“Look, I don’t have time to explain and I promise I will later, but Frankie has my son, and I’m here to get him back” she stated firmly. “But I can’t do it alone” she looked at him pleadingly. Sean sighed as he sat down on his bed, running a tired hand through his hair.
“Please Sean” she kneeled own in front of him, cupping his hands in hers, “I’m begging you...he’s the only family I have left...you said you’ve been trying to keep me safe...well my safety doesn’t matter if Nathaniel isn’t safe.”
“You named him Nathaniel...after Natalie” he smiled sadly, swallowing the huge lump that was suddenly lodged in his throat. Liz nodded sadly. “Eliza...I...I tried...I”
“Not now Sean” she cut off his sentence with a shake of her head. She knew what he was trying to say, but she couldn’t focus on the detail of her sisters death at the moment. Her main focus was to get her son away from his psychotic father. Sean nodded his head in understanding. He stared down at her. He had to admit, even under the circumstances, he was happy to see her. Taking her by surprise, Sean wrapped his arms around her tightly.
“I’ve missed you” he whispered. Liz smiled, clinging to him.
“I’ve missed you too,” they stood together for a moment, just holding onto each other. Liz was the first to pull away as she stared up at him.
“I really need your help Sean...I wouldn’t ask you to go against the family like this...”
“What family...the only family I had died five years ago and the other was force to go into hiding...” his jaws tighten, “the only reason I stayed in was to protect you...I felt it was the least I could do since I couldn’t...” protect Natalie, he added silently. Liz knew what he was going to say and once again felt tears prick her eyes. Seeing the painful look on her face he quickly changed the subject.
“What do you want me to do” he asked her? Liz went on to tell him her plans and what she needed from him.
“Absolutely not” he shook his head adamantly, “there is no way I’m letting you walk in there alone” he stood from the bed only to resume his pacing from earlier.
“Sean” she called to him, halting his movements. Liz walked over to him and placed a calming hand over his forearm. “I need you to do this and not question me on it.”
“But what’s stopping him from killing you on the spot?”
“He won’t” she stated surely.
“How do you know? You don’t know what he has been like since you left. He’s on a murderous rampage and you’re his number one target.”
“I know because, just like he has something I want, I have something he wants” Sean stared at her questioningly wondering what she meant. “I just need you to make sure that once we have Nathan that you will get him to safety.”
“And what about you” her eyes scattered across his face, staring at her feet.
“He’s all that matters”
Chapter 19
“Eliza! Eliza!” Sean’s panic voice rang through the house. Liz ran down the stairs, only to stop dead in her tracks at the sight before her. At first she thought it was a joke that they were trying to trick her, but as she watched the blood soak through her sister’s white shirt, she knew.
“Nat . . . Natalie” she cried, taking her sister out of Sean’s shaking arms. “Natalie, sweetie, talk to me” she cradled her blood stained face in her hands, “Get up . . . ” she whispered against her ear, “Do you hear me damn it . . . wake up” she shouted, “ . . . you have to wake up” she sobbed, but it was useless, she was already gone. Liz didn’t feel it as Ray took Natalie’s lifeless body from her arms or when Frankie picked her up and carried her to her room. All she felt was numb.
“What happened” she could hear Frankie on the other side of the closed door.
“I-I didn’t know she was there” Sean’s trembling voice reached her ears, “everything happened so fast. Shots just started flying” he began to cry hard.
“Sean” Frankie shouted. He grabbed his arm and Sean winced. For the first time he noticed that Sean had been shot in the shoulder. “Look” he started calmly, “lets get this taking care of . . . and then we’re going to sit down and handle this situation” Sean nodded and did what he was told. Frankie walked back into her room and sat down on the side of the bed.
“Don’t worry Eliza . . . I’m going to make them pay” he vowed. Liz only stared blankly up at the ceiling as tears slowly slid down the side of her face, collecting into puddles in her ears.
~~~~~~~~~~~

“Eliza . . . ” Frankie called to her as he entered the room. It had been two weeks since Natalie died, and as promised, he had taken care of the responsible party. Liz hadn’t left her room since the day of the funeral and he had comfort her the best he could, but she wouldn’t let anyone near her. He felt he had been sensitive in her time of grief, but now it was time to move on. Liz turned to him briefly before returning her gaze back out the window. She watched the rain as it pelted the windowpane.

“I need you to make a trade” he announced, coming to stand next to her.

“No” she answered without giving him a second glance. Frankie grabbed her roughly by the arm.

“I think I’ve been supportive long enough” he hissed, “Now it’s time to move on. I’m sorry for Natalie, but life goes on and you will be making the trade” Liz snatched her arm from him.

“My sister is dead . . . I couldn’t give a flying fuck about your precious trade” she bit out. She knew it was coming, but she held her chin up stubbornly. Frankie’s hand connected with her face hard. Liz bit her lip against the pain.

“Leroy will be escorting you . . . this package is very important . . . it could take us to another level” he ran a finger down her smarted cheek. He captured her chin roughly, “The deal goes down tomorrow night, I suggest you have a new attitude by then” he kissed her forehead before exiting the room. Liz followed his moment, her eyes hard and full of fire.

~~~~~~~~~
“...it’s all there . . . a million just as agreed” Liz responded smoothly, closing the briefcase on the desk. The man across from her nodded in approval as his eyes roamed her body.
“So you’re the one everyone has been talking about” he rubbed his chin thoughtfully, “I must say, Frankie definitely knows how to pick them” Liz didn’t respond, she just kept a keen eye on him. He stood from his seat and walked around the desk and stood in front of her. “You are a sweet looking thing” he grabbed her, pulling her roughly against him. “What do you say you give me a taste” he licked her face? Before he knew what was happening, his face was pressed against the table, his right arm twisted painfully behind his back.
“I don’t think that was part of the deal” she ground out, “Now, where is the package” Leroy stood to the side trying to hide his smirk. He knew Eliza could handle herself.
“I-it’s over there” he motioned for one of his men and he quickly reached beneath the desk.
“Slowly” Liz ordered, training her gun on him. She motioned to Leroy, who quickly retrieved the brown envelope and handed it to her.
“Cover me” she instructed, releasing the hold she had on the man and he rubbed his sore arm. With quickness, she slid the disk into the laptop and read through its contents.
“Is that it” Leroy asked? Liz nodded her head before packing up the computer and sliding the disk back into it protective covering. She handed the briefcase full of money to the man.
“It was a pleasure” she smirked. She strolled out of the room, Leroy following cautiously behind her.
They drove in silence as Liz thought about the right time to put her plan in action.
“Can you pull over, I don’t feel so well” she clutched her stomach and moaned for show? Leroy stared at her in concern.
“Do you think you could wait, we’re almost to the house” he asked?
“I think I’m going to throw up” she gagged and Leroy quickly swerved the car off the road. Liz quickly stumbled out of the car to her knees.
“Are you okay” Leroy kneeled before her? He didn’t see it coming but definitely felt the pressure as the butt of her gun collided with his temple.
“I’m sorry” she mumbled before grabbing the keys out the ignition and opening the trunk. She pulled out the duffle bag she had stored there that morning and slung it over her shoulders. She tossed the keys into the dark and took off running.
Finally coming upon her bike, she removed the shrubs covering it and climbed on. She knew she was working against the clock and it was only a matter of time before Leroy was back at the house and Frankie would be after her. Arriving at the storage unit, she quickly opened up her door and pushed her bike inside. Flicking on the lights, she knew she would be safe for the time being, the storage was in her great grandmothers maiden name and no one but her and Natalie knew that it existed.
“Wake her up” Frankie ordered. Liz moaned as cold water began to drizzle down her body. She sputtered, coughing as the water entered her nose and mouth. “That’s enough” Frankie stepped in front of her, “Glad to see you’re awake . . . for a moment there, I thought they had went a little over board” he lifted her chin so that he could see her eyes. Liz jerked her head away, wanting nothing more then to wipe that condescending smile off his face. She barely remembers how she ended up here. She remembered knocking out several of Frankie’s guards and finding out the room where they held Nathan. She had just slid opened the window and stepped in when the room was flooded with light and Ray, Leroy and Frankie stood before her.
“Welcome home Eliza” he had said before her world went black. She had woken up a little while later at his demands. She had tried to move, but soon realize that her hands were bonded above her head as she dangled in the air. She looked down at herself and noticed that she was only clad in a bra and a pair of jeans.
“Where is it” he asked her?
“Where is my son” she returned?
“Don’t you mean our son” he raised an eyebrow at her as his breath danced across her face? “You haven’t changed a bit . . . you’re still just as beautiful as the day I first laid eyes on you” he cupped her cheeks and Liz shook off his hand. “Ah, don’t be that way Eliza” he gripped her face roughly, bringing his mouth down to cover hers. Liz pushed him, only to have his hand come down hard across her face.
“Don’t forget” he gripped her hair roughly, “If I wanted . . . I could have you disposed of with a snap of my fingers” he seethed.
“Then why haven’t you” she challenged? The corner of his mouth lifted in a smile.
“Still the same little firecracker I see.”
“Where is he?”
“Don’t worry, he’s fine . . . you really think I would hurt my own son” Liz only glared at him. “It wasn’t nice keeping him from me” he clicked his tongue, “you’ve deprived me of several father-son moments” he smiled.
“I want to see him.”
“Now, I don’t think you’re in any position to be making demands” he warned.
“Go to hell” she retorted.
“Only if you’re right there with me” he smirked. “I want my disk Eliza” he commanded.
“People in Hell want ice water, but we all can’t get what we want” she smiled. Frankie glared at her before punching her hard in the side.
“You listen to me . . . you will tell me where it is at or I’ll make you talk and trust me . . . you won’t want that” he vowed, stepping away from her. Liz inhaled sharply as she struggled to absorb the pain. “Now, are you ready to talk” her only response was to hold her chin up high and set her jaw stubbornly. Anger flashed in his eyes as he saw her defiance. Walking over to one of his man, he straightened his jacket.
“Make her talk, but don’t kill her” he ordered before stepping out of the room. She had been kicked, punched, stomped and burned until she past out, not one word passing her lips.
“Are you ready to talk now” he asked, standing before her? When she didn’t respond but only stared at him challengingly, he nodded toward Ray who disappeared, only to return, dragging something with him. She couldn’t tell what it was because they were standing in the shadows. “Bring him into the light” Leroy helped Ray drag the unconscious figure and dropped him at Frankie’s feet. Liz’s eyes widened in shock as she felt a lump in her throat.
“Max” she whispered, feeling a little of her control slip at his battered form.
Chapter 20
Sean waited until the right moment before slipping undetected into the house. He had watched in fear as Frankie had captured Eliza and saw them carry her out of the room. He had wanted to rush in and save her, but she had made him promise that no matter what, he would get Nathan to safety. So he had held back, knowing that Frankie wouldn’t kill her until he got what he wanted from her and knowing Eliza, wild horses couldn’t drag it out of her. He knew where they were heading. He would have to go after her later.
“Watch the boy . . . ” he had heard Frankie say, “Wait for my instructions” he ordered before he climbed into the car they had placed Eliza in. Frankie had been lax on his security of Nathan, and Sean used it to his advantage.
“Hey man” he said smoothly as he entered the room connecting to the room he knew Nathan was housed.
“What’s up man” Gerald nodded, “Man where have you been? There has been some major shit going down” he said. Gerald liked to run his mouth, always telling stupid jokes and opening his mouth at inappropriate times. He wasn’t the sharpest crayon in the box, which is why Sean was sure Frankie had left him to watch the boy. Figuring that he couldn’t possibly screw up.
“I know . . . that’s why I’m here” he said, making his way to the door leading to Nathan. He opened the door to find the frightened boy sitting in the middle of the bed, clutching a necklace that dangled from his neck. Gerald stared at him in confusion.
“What’s going on” he asked, stepping into the room behind Sean?
“Frankie sent me for the boy” he answered nonchalantly, hoping he hadn’t misjudged Gerald’s intelligence. Gerald raised an eyebrow at him.
“But Frankie said that he would contact me first” not sure what was going on.
Sean shrugged, “I guess he got a little side tracked and sent me for him” he could feel the sweat rolling down his back as he prayed that nothing went wrong before he got out of there. No matter what, he was going to get Nathan to safety.
“Well, I’ll just call him to make sure . . . I don’t want to be on his bad side” Sean watched as he pulled out his cell and flipped it open. Mistakenly, he turned his back on Sean.
“I don’t think that’s a wise idea” Sean warned, the barrel of his gun resting comfortably at the other man’s temple.
“Whoa” Gerald exclaimed, holding his hands up in surrender. Sean snatched the phone out of his hand, and slid it into his pocket.
“What the hell are you doing man” Gerald asked, staring at the gun trained on him?
“Walking out of here” Sean grabbed Nathan, but he wasn’t expecting the fight the little boy put up. During his struggle with him, Gerald took the opportunity to reach for his own weapon. Sean saw the light bounce off the gun from the corner of his eye and turn just in time.
Gerald’s eyes widened in shock as he looked down at the gaping hole in his chest. He fell with a loud thud to the ground, his eyes still open. Sean looked around the room and didn’t see Nathan anywhere.
“Shit” he mumbled as he started looking. He noticed the way the tablecloth swayed and knew that he was under the table. Squatting down, he lifted up the tablecloth.
Nathan stared fearfully at the man that kneeled before him. He had never seen him before and from the way he had just shot a man in front of him, he gathered that he wasn’t a very nice person.
“Look kid . . . I’m not going to hurt you” Sean vowed as he tried to coax the scared boy out from under the table. His words only seemed to cause Nathan too coward farther under the table. Sean sighed heavily, he was never good with kids. “Nathan . . . that is your name, right?” he asked trying a different approach. Nathan stared at him, his head nodding slightly. “Well my name is Sean . . . I’m a friend of your mom, Eliza . . . ” at the mention of Eliza, Sean watched the young boys eyes light up, but he didn’t say anything. “She sent me here for you . . . to bring you to her” he informed him. Still, he didn’t budge. Sean looked at his watch, knowing that they were pressed for time. “Look, I promise, I’m not a bad guy . . . I just want to take you to your mom.” Nathan stared at him, something about him was trustworthy. After all, he was the only person that had ever came for him.
“You promise to take me to my mommy” he asked softly?
Sean smiled, “I promise” he held out his hand and was grateful when Nathan hesitantly took it. “How about we go get your mom” Nathan nodded his head eagerly?
~~~~~~~~~~~

Max was groggily, his head hurt and he was quite sure he had several broken ribs. He tried to remember what had happened in the last twenty-four hours. He remembered Beth showing up at his door, stating something along the lines of they didn’t belong together. But he had quickly convinced her otherwise, and they had made love. He could still fell the arch of her body as she submitted to him . . . the feel of her soft skin . . . the taste of her sweetness. It was all permanently burned into his memory. But with those beautiful memories, he remembered waking up without her beside him. He had instantly felt panic. He couldn’t believe that after what they had shared, she could just leave. Determine to not let her continue to run away from him, he had quickly gotten dressed and headed to her house. He should’ve known something wasn’t right when he arrived at her house to find the door ajar, but he ignored his instincts and went inside. The place was quiet as he had made his way to her room. The first thing he noticed was that her dresser drawers were open and empty. He had felt the ball of lead settle in the pit of his stomach, because he knew . . . she was gone. He had sat on the edge of the bed, trying to understand why she would do something like that when he heard a noise. He looked up and saw two men standing in the doorway of her bedroom.

“Who are you” he had asked? Neither one of them had said a word as they rushed toward him. Max remembered praying to the heavens above for strength as he began to fight them. The twenty years of karate had come in handy until one of them pulled out a stun gun and he went down like a sack of potatoes.

Once he had awake some time later, he was beaten repeatedly while some man watched on with a satisfied smile on his face. He had come to stand in front of him.

“I must say . . . Eliza sure knows how to pick them” he had said. Max hadn’t known who the hell Eliza was, but from the menacing look on the guys face, he was definitely going to be finding out really soon.

Max’s head flew back as the smelling salt burned his nose and his eyes were assaulted by bright lights.

“I see Harvard’s finally awake” Frankie laughed, coming to stand in front of him. Max kept his eyes trained on him, not an easy task when his left eyes was practically swollen shut. “So this is what had you tied up in LA,” he turned to Liz. Max followed his line of vision and stared in shock.

“Beth” he struggled, only to have his arms twisted painfully behind his back.

“Beth? I think you’re mistaken…isn’t that right Eliza” her name dripped off his tongue with venom. He grabbed her hair painfully.

“Don’t you touch her” Max shouted, struggling against their hold.

“What are you going to do about it Harvard” Frankie asked? Keeping one eye on Max, he leaned in, placing his mouth over Liz’s. Max growled deep in his throat as he watched on. Liz allowed him to kiss her, and the moment she felt his tongue slip into her mouth, she bit down hard.

“You bitch” he growled. Stepping back, he saw the satisfying smirk on her face. “We’ll see if you’re still smiling when I finish with your little boyfriend here” he walked over to Max and slammed his fist into his stomach. Max let out a moan, but continued to stand tall, well as best as he could.

“Looks like we have a tough guy here” Frankie laughed, “You a tough guy Harvard? We’ll just see how tough you are” he motioned to Ray, who drug Max out of the room. Moments later she could hear his screams.

“All you have to do is tell me what I want to know and I’ll let him live” he raised an eyebrow at her.

“I’m going to enjoy watching you die when I kill you” she glared, her fiery eyes staring into his.

“Have it your way” he shrugged. “I’m going to check on the boy . . . ” he told Leroy as he buttoned up his jacket, “Make sure Ray doesn’t kill him just yet.”

“What do you want me to do about her” Leroy nodded to Liz? Frankie stared at her, seeing the way her eyes were closed and she winced each time Harvard screamed.

“Nothing for now . . . she’ll find her tongue soon.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Are you sure this is the right address” Michael asked, staring up at the brownstone?
“For the fifth time, yes. I do know how to read” Maria answered in irritation. Alex just rolled his eyes at their bickering. They had been like that every since they left LA hours earlier. He just wanted to find Max and Beth and get the hell back home.
“Could you two chill out for a minute, jeez” he groaned? Michael and Maria stopped arguing and looked back at him. “Maria, let me see the wallet” Maria reached into her bag and pulled out the wallet. She tossed it to him.
“Anthony Caldwell” he read the name off the licence.
“It doesn’t sound like a mobster’s name” Michael said, remembering the description Maria had gave them.
“I know what I saw Michael” she huffed, folding her arms across her chest. How could she forget? She had gone back to Beth’s to get some clean clothing. She hadn’t been expecting the scene she’d come upon. She had watched as Max fought with two men. He seemed to be holding his own until one of them pulled out a stun gun. She had wanted to help him, but knew that she was no match against them. She had watched them drag him out the house and throw him into the back of a car. She had called Michael in hysterics and told him what was going on. When he and Alex had arrived, she had been crying uncontrollably and heavy with guilt.
“Maria, there was nothing you could do...you said that they were huge” Michael tried to soothe her.
“B-but I could have done more . . . I could have jumped on their backs . . . kicked, scratched, something . . . ” she cried, “ . . . but I didn’t, and now Max and Beth are gone” he wrapped his arms tightly around her.
“Whoa oh, what do we have here” Alex said? While Michael had been consoling Maria, he had been looking around the place. He bent down and picked up the object that peeked out from under the bed.
“What is that” Maria asked, snatching it out of his hands? It was a wallet.
“One of them must have dropped it during the struggle” Michael retrieved the wallet from her hands. He opened it, going through the contents.
“Well?” Maria and Alex both asked.
“It looks like we’re going to New York.”
“Are you sure we shouldn’t call the police” Maria asked, her hands shaking nervously in her lap?
“If these guys are really in the mob like you think . . . the police would be no help. Max and Beth will be dead before they got off their asses” Michael retorted.
“And what the hell are we going to do . . . a computer geek, an ill-tempered bartender and a waitress . . . we’re hardly a rescue squad” she snorted?
“Maybe, but we’ll have the element of surprise on our side” Alex answered, stepping out of the car, Michael following behind him.
“We’re going to die” Maria mumbled as she climbed out of the car after them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sean watched as Frankie drove off without Leroy or Ray, which meant they were still inside, along with at least four others. Six against one, he didn’t stand a chance. He looked in the rearview mirror at the sleeping form in the backseat. He knew this was no place for a kid, but he had no where else to take him, and he had to get Eliza. Stepping out of the car, he opened the backdoor.

“Hey” he shook him gently. Nathan woke up instantly, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “I need you to do me a favor” Sean said softly.

“Okay.” Taking his hand, Sean led him over to an abandon shed.

“I need you to stay in here” he saw the boy’s eyes widened in fear, “I have to go get your mom, but you can’t go with me . . . this is the safest place for you” still the fear remained. “I promise, I’ll be back” he didn’t give him any more time to consider before placing him into the shed and closing the door firmly behind him. He could hear his tiny cries as he put the lock in place. He walked back to his car and popped the trunk.

“Where are they” Sean froze when he felt something press into his back? He held his hands up.

“Who?”

“Don’t play dumb” Michael growled, shoving the object harder into his back, “Where are our friends” he demanded? After they had managed to break into Caldwell’s apartment undetected, they had caught him off guard and with a little persuasion and a lighter, had gotten him to disclose where Max was. They had knocked him out before taping his mouth and tying him up, leaving him in the tub.

Before Michael could react, Sean turned quickly, grabbing the object from his hand and training his own gun on him.

“What the hell is this” he couldn’t help but laugh as he saw what had been sticking in his back, a tampon. Michael cursed Maria silently. Sean tossed it to the ground. “Now, who the hell are you” he asked, looking at the three of them. When neither of the boys said anything, Maria stepped up.

“We’re looking for our friends Beth . . . Caldwell said that she was here . . . ”

“Maria” Michael scolded.

“What?”

“Beth?” Sean said in confusion.

“Eliza” Alex corrected, remembering the name Caldwell had called out when Michael burned him. Recognition shone in Sean eyes. Eliza had told him a little about her life in LA, but not much. She wanted him to contact them in case something happened to her.

“Let me guess” he said, lowering his gun, “Michael . . . Maria . . . Alex” he pointed to each of them correctly. “Eliza told me about you” he answered their silent question, “It looks like we’re on the same team.” Turning back around, he grabbed his bag out the car.

“So where are they” Michael asked?

“They?”

“Max and Eliza” Alex retorted.

“I don’t know who this Max is . . . but Eliza’s in there” he pointed to the large warehouse several yards ahead of them.

“Then what are we waiting on . . . lets go” Michael said, already heading toward the warehouse.

“Whoa, slow down there Action Jackson” Sean grabbed his arm, halting his moment. “You have no idea what you’re up against, so I suggest you take Opie and the Princess here and leave.”

“Like hell . . . we’re not going anywhere without our friends” Maria growled lowly. Looking at his watch, Sean sighed, he was running out of time. There was no doubt Frankie was on his way back to the estate and he would find Gerald dead and Nathan gone.

“Okay look, maybe you could help” reaching into his bag, he pulled out some guns and handed one each to Michael and Alex. “Watch yourself Spike, that isn’t a tampon you got there” he chuckled, “you do know how to use one of those don’t you” he asked the both of them.

“Of course” they lied in unison.

“Good.”

“Hey, what about me” Maria asked?

“You stay here” Sean and Michael said in unison. They looked at each other before turning back to Maria.

“What! No way Michael” she grew angry. The two of them began arguing.

“Are they always like this” Sean asked, looking on in amusement?

“As of lately” Alex said dryly. Seeing that he needed to step in, Sean stepped between them.

“Look Princess, I need you to stay here . . . ” he walked over to the shed and unlocked it. “Come here” he held out his hand. Michael, Alex and Maria gasped as they saw the scared little boy step out. “This is Nathan . . . Eliza’s son” they didn’t question him as they stared at the miniature Beth.

“Nathan’s been through a lot” he said, staring at Maria, “maybe you could look after him . . . talk to him” he pleaded.

“Of course” Maria said without hesitation. She dropped to her knees in front of the little boy, “Hello Nathan, my name’s Maria . . . I’m a friend of your mommy” she held out her hand, and smiled when he took it.

“Lets go” Sean said as he realized Maria was to engulf in Nathan to pay them any attention.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Liz stared at Leroy as he leaned against the wall watching her. “If you let me go, I promise I won’t kill you when I do get lose” she said, causing him to laugh.
“Trust me sweetheart, the only way you’re leaving here is in a body bag” he retorted.
“Okay . . . don’t say I didn’t offer.”
~~~~~~~~~~~

Same time outside the warehouse

“I thought you said you knew how to use a gun” Sean whispered as he stood over the man’s fallen body.

“So I lied” Alex wheezed, rubbing his sore neck from where the guy had tried to strangle him. Sean rolled his eyes.

“Here . . . ” he removed the safety, “just point and shot . . . you think you can do that Opie.”

“Stop calling me that” Alex snapped, snatching the gun back.

“What about you” Sean asked Michael?

“I think I can manage” he replied sarcastically.

“Good, come on” they stepped over the two fallen watchmen. They heard screaming, and ran toward it.

“Looks like you picked the wrong girl to fall in love with” Ray laughed as he slammed his fist into Max’s stomach. Max doubled over to his knees, coughing up blood.

“Fuck you” he managed to choke out.

“Harvard . . . Harvard . . . Harvard” Ray tisked as Rick jostled Max to his feet. He raised his fist, but before it could connect, the door bust open.

“I think he’s had enough” Sean said as he walked into the room, weapon drawn. Alex stood beside him, but he didn’t know what kind of help he would be from the way his hand shook.

“I always knew that you couldn’t be trusted . . . ” Ray growled.

“Well give the man a prize . . . let him go” he ordered.

“Or what, you and Opie here going to take us down” he laughed.

“Stop calling me that” Alex said through clutched jaws.

“Shut up” Sean said, focusing back on the occupants in the room, “now, I said let him go” when they didn’t move, he fired a shot on the ground near Ray’s foot. “Next time it’ll be your head . . . ”

~~~~~~~
“What the hell was that” Chuck asked Leroy?
“I don’t know . . . go check it out. Make sure those morons didn’t kill him . . . ” he said. Once he was gone, Leroy walked up to Liz.
“You know, I still owe you for that little move you did that night” he had, had a nice size lump on his head and sever headaches for months after he had woken up from her attack. He ran his hand over her trim stomach, up to her breast. “I think I’ll take my dues now” he moved his hand down into her pants, cupping her roughly.
“Enjoy it while you can”
“Oh, I plan on it” he smirked. Before he could do anything, his cell rung distracting him. Liz took her opportunity. Using all her strength, she wrapped her hands around the chain and pulling her body up, she wrapped her legs around his neck. Leroy gasped, being caught completely by surprise. He tried to get free, but damn she was stronger then she looked. Liz continued to squeeze her legs together, another move she learned from Frankie. “I’m going to show you a hundred different ways to kill a man Eliza” he had once said. She twisted her body, and heard the snap of his neck. She released him, his body falling with a heavy thud. Liz sighed heavily, knowing she wasn’t out of the clear just yet. She still had to get down. She struggled with the rope tied around her hands, hoping to wiggle free. She heard a series of shots rang out and felt her heart pound in her chest
“Max”
~~~~~~~~

“Did you have to kill them” Alex asked, staring at the two dead corpses at his feet?

“Hey, it was either them or us, and I preferred them” Sean shrugged. “Give me a hand” he said as he wrapped Max’s arm around his neck. They carried his battered body into the hall where they met up with Michael who was standing over Chuck’s dead body, the gun hanging loosely from his hand.

“You or him, right?” Sean looked at Michael’s pale face.

“Right” he mumbled, still in shock over taking another man’s life.

“Get him out of here . . . I’m going to find Eliza” Michael took Sean’s place and helped Alex carry Max.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Liz’s wrists were bleeding as the rope bit into her flesh. “Come on” she cursed. Suddenly the door opened and she held her breath.
Sean peeked cautiously into the window, seeing Eliza, but he also noticed Leroy lying at her feet “Someone order a Knight in Shining Amor” Sean smiled. She sighed heavily in relief.
“Well it’s about time” she smiled, “what took you so long” she asked as she watched him lean over and check Leroy’s pulse.
“I had to find a babysitter” he smirked, helping her down.
“Where is he” she asked?
“Don’t worry, he’s safe . . . come on, we have to get out of here . . . can you walk” he asked, holding her up.
“Yeah” he quickly shed his shirt and handed it to her. “Thanks.”
~~~~~~~~~~

“Beth” Maria called as she saw them coming. She engulfed her into a tight embrace.

“Maria?” she said in shock, looking over at Sean. Sean just shrugged his shoulders and walked onto the car.

“Oh my god . . . we didn’t know if you were alive . . . and then they took Max . . . ”

“Oh my god Max, where is he?” Maria leaded her over to the car where they had placed Max in the back seat. Liz kneeled down, taking in his battered face.

“I’m so sorry” she whispered, brushing the matted bangs from his forehead.

“Is he okay” a small voice said from the front seat? Liz looked up and felt a lump form in her throat.

“Hi” she whispered, not believing he was really there.

“Hi” Nathan smiled back. They stared at each other for what seemed like eternity until Sean’s voice broke through.

“Eliza, we really should get going” he fidgeted behind her, watching the warehouse.

“We can go back to our hotel” Alex suggested.

“Lets go” she replied.

~~~~~~~~~
“Must you do that right now” Maria asked as they watched Sean clean his guns? Sean smirked but didn’t reply. They had arrived back at their hotel and it had taken some sneaky moves to get Max upstairs undetected. Maria and Liz had bandaged up his ribs and dressed his cuts and bruises and now he was asleep in the other room.
“Here Maria” Michael handed her a cup of tea before sitting down beside her. They were all a little on edge. Alex stood at the window, expecting Frankie and his men to show up anytime.
“Relax Opie, we’re safe right now . . . why don’t the three of you get some sleep.”
“Sleep” Maria snorted, “I don’t think I’ll be able to close my eyes for weeks” Michael rubbed her shoulders comfortingly, knowing exactly how she felt.
~~~~~~~~~~

Liz stared at his beautiful face, unable to tear her eyes away from him. She ran a finger over his soft cheek, caressed his thick locks. She never thought that she would see him again. Even though she hadn’t shown it, she had been scared when Frankie held her. Not of Frankie himself, but at the mere thought of never seeing her son again.

What amazed her the most was that he had accepted her with welcome arms, had known who she was and accepted her. He had clung to her once they arrived at the hotel, and once she had taken care of Max, she had taken him into another room where he buried his face in her neck and fell asleep. There was a small knock at the door before it crept open.

“Hey” Sean whispered, closing the door softly behind him.

“Hey . . . how are they” she asked, not taking her eyes off Nathan.

“Scared . . . confused” he answered with a shrugged, taking a seat on the floor next to her. Liz nodded, expecting as much.

“What are you going to do Eliza” he asked after a silence fell over them? Liz sighed, brushing her hand down her son’s back.

“I have to finish this” she answered.

“Eliza, you know that’s like walking into the lion’s den with raw meat around your neck” he warned.

“I have no choice Sean. If I go to the police, my name is just as dirty as his . . . I can’t go to jail” she stared longingly at her son, “and I’m tried of running . . . it’s time I end this once and for all” she stated simply.

“So that’s it, you’re going after him” she nodded, standing up. Sean stood up, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as he stared down at Nathan.

“He looks like you and Natalie” he smiled wistfully. “I’m coming with you” he stated. Liz didn’t say anything, expecting that as well.

~~~~~~~~~
“This is crazy!” Michael shouted. Liz had just finished telling them about her life and the fact that she was going after Frankie. “And you . . . ” he said turning to Sean, “how the hell could you agree to something as insane as this?”
“Hey man, I tried” he shrugged.
“Beth, you can’t do this . . . think about Nathan . . . and Max” Maria tried to reason with her.
“They’re the reasons I have to do this. If I don’t stop him now, they’ll never be safe.”
“Then we’re going with you” Alex said, “we can help” Sean snorted but quickly straightened when Liz glared at him.
“No” she rushed on when she saw them about to protest, “This isn’t your fight, it’s mine . . . besides, I need you guys to take care of Max and Nathan for me” she pleaded with them.
“This is bullshit” Michael mumbled, but she knew he had already succumbed.
“Thank you” Michael pulled her into his arms, hugging her tightly.
“You be careful” he whispered against her ear.
“I will” she smiled against his chest. They separated, only for Maria to take his place.
“Don’t be too long, we got some girl talk that is long overdue” she tried to laugh through her tears.
“Promise you’ll watch after them.”
“Promise” Maria released her. With one finally hug from Alex, Liz grabbed her bag.
“Ready” Sean asked, slinging his own bag over his shoulder?
“As ready as I can be” she answered. Taking one last look at her friends, Liz left the room with Sean closely behind her.
