Part 11
Max took a deep breath before exiting Kyle’s car.
“Max the school isn’t going anywhere. Get out.” Kyle laughed. They were parked in front of the community college. “You got your books right?”
“Yes.”
“And money?”
“Yes. Mom.” Max cracked a smile.
“What did I tell you about that?” Kyle frowned despite his humor. “Now get out of my damn car before I kick your ass out.”
Max laughed and exited the car.
“Do you need me to pick you up?” Kyle asked.
“Nah, it’s ok. Thanks anyways.” Max smiled and waved him off.

Alex ran down the block towards the community college. He didn’t want to be late today. He was doing better now. He wasn’t up all night being depressed as much now. His job and school kept him pretty busy. That and trying to spend as less time in his apartment as he could.
He didn’t want to run into Cowboy Jim anytime soon.
So he ran up the steps, past all the new students and made it to his first class.

Max scanned the halls looking for any trace of Alex. He sighed and went into his first class. Computers were scattered all throughout the room and Max managed to find an empty one near the back. An older man walked into the room and the students sat up straight.
“Hello everyone, I’m Professor Watkins, this is intro to computing. I’m having my TA pass out the class syllabus for the quarter.” He announced. Max looked over as a younger man walked in carrying a box. It was Alex. Max gasped and the students around him looked at him.
Alex began to pass everyone their syllabus and when he reached the back row he froze. Max was staring back at him with a mixture of surprise and hurt in his eyes. He passed the row their papers and nodded at Max.
“Ok this is the first day and the majority of labs do not start till next week, so let’s just call it a day shall we? See you all next time.” The professor says and quickly exits the room.
The rest of the students get up and left soon after, but Max couldn’t seem to leave his seat. Alex also remained behind leaning on the front table, looking at anything but over at Max.
Max finally gets up his nerves and gets up, heading straight to Alex.
“Where have you been?” He asks angrily, and hurt. “I call, leave messages, and nothing. Absolutely nothing from you. Do you know I haven’t been able to sleep well since that night? I was so fucking worried about you, and you don’t even care.”
“Look I really rather not talk about it here ok. If they knew we had a relationship here I’d be kicked out.” Alex said.
“Oh well sorry. I haven’t seen my boyfriend in weeks, I’m a nervous wreck, and now I can’t make a scene because you might get in trouble.”
“Look, I’m really sorry ok, what more do you want from me?” Alex said, now starting to get angry.
“I want to know what happened? Why you haven’t called or taken my calls?” Max said.
Alex slumped his shoulders and took a deep breath. He looked up at Max, seeing the hurt and anger combined into one glare. He felt bad, yes, and felt stupid for not calling Max, but he couldn’t do it.
“I’m sorry.” Alex said and took a shivering breath. “I just…I couldn’t be with you, not then. And now, I feel horrible.” Alex leaned forward and rested his forehead on Max’s chest, letting the tears flow freely. Max took him closer and cupped the back of the shorter boy’s head.
“What happened?” Max whispered against his ear.
“Can we go back to your place, please?” Alex said. Max nodded and led him out of the room.
*
Max led Alex into the living room and watched as he collapsed onto the sofa. He’d never seen anyone break down how Alex was now doing. Alex gasped for breath in between sobs.
“Alex, what happened to you?” Max asked as he sat down beside him. Alex continued to cry into the cushions. “Alex, please, tell me.”
Alex turned and fell into Max’s lap, crying helplessly against Max’s legs.
“I’m sorry, so sorry. I missed you so much. I did, I do. I never meant to hurt you Max, never would hurt you. I’m sorry.” Alex cried.
“Oh Alex,” Max held him closer, “I’m just glad you’re back.”

Michael ran his hands through his hair for about the twentieth time as he waited, hoping that Alex would arrive soon. Cowboy Jim was due to be there in fifteen minutes and Alex was no where to be found. Michael bit his nails down to nubs, he had no idea where Alex was or what he was doing. He hadn’t been coming home on a regular basis, he would leave the house wearing nice clothes.
The knock on the door made Michael stumble. He was crashing and his nerves were on edge.
“Hello son, who are you on this grand evening?” Cowboy Jim said.
“Uh, hey Cowboy Jim,” Michael said. He wiped his hands on his jeans and motioned to the older man to sit.
“Where is that Alex?” Cowboy Jim asked as he sat down. “I haven’t heard from him. Is he alright?”
Michael and wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. His throat burned from its dryness, and his hands shook as he placed them back on his lap. He needed another fix, fast.
“Are you ok son? You don’t look too good.”
“Yes sir, I’m fine.” Michael tried to smile. “Uh, here’s the cash I brought in.” He fished in his jeans and dropped his earnings onto the small coffee table.
Cowboy Jim looked down at the money then back up at Michael.
“Well son, this looks like a poor amount.” He shook his head. “Where is Alex?”
“I…I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No sir. He hasn’t been around lately.” Michael ducked his head.
“Is that so?” Cowboy Jim sighed. “You have him contact me as soon as you hear from him Mickey. And here…” He pulled out a folded piece of paper and handed it to Michael.
“A job sir?” Michael asked as he picked up the paper.
“You can say that. I’ll be seeing you again. Have a nice day, son.” He tipped his hat and left.
Michael looked down at the writing on the paper and sighed. He didn’t like the look of it one bit.
He needed to find Alex.
