Chapter 11

’Agent Burns.’

’Doctor. I thought you’d be half way round the world by now.’

’Believe me I would have if it wasn’t for what I found.’

’Enlighten me.’

’Not over the phone. We have to meet.’

’I’m still in Phoenix. Get over here and then contact me again.’

’I’ll be there.’

Sacred Heart Hospital

“What happened?” Donny asked following the doctor outside Liz’s room. “When I found her she seemed to know who she was. She said the name…Max and then asked me if she was in Las Cruces.” Donny informed the doctor.

“She’s emotionally repressing what happened. In extenuating circumstances like she’s been through, it tends to happen.” The doctor continued and then looked over to the nurse behind the booth. “I need this in lab ASAP.” She said handing Liz’s rape kit over to the nurse.

“So what do we do until then?” Donny asked tapping on the wall.

“It’s only temporarily.” The doctor advised seeing the detective’s persistence.

“Hey, Roma!” Wess called out from the end of the corridor and ran up to him and the doctor, with his badge swaying side to side.

“Um, Dr. Emerson, this is my partner Detective David Wess.” Donny introduced.

“Nice to meet you.” The doctor spoke shaking his hand and headed over to the patient board to make some adjustments.

“So, what happened to you, man? One minute we’re chasing down clepto Luis and the next you’re rushing a vic here?” Wess questioned. “Which, by the way I had to find out from a uniform instead of my own partner.”

“I’m sorry, man. Just that…it was bad.” Donny apologized.

“So where is she, if I can safely assume it’s a she?” Wess asked intrigued.

“She’s over here.” Donny said walking to Liz’s room, but when they turned the corner of the curtain that covered the hospital bed, she was gone.

“So where is she?” Wess asked.

Michael’s Apartment

“What do you mean she’s alive?” Michael asked completely confused by Max’s sudden epiphany.

“She’s alive Michael. I can feel her inside.” Max described with an anxious smile as he clutched his chest.

“Max, are you sure you’re just not…I don’t want you to live on false hope.” Isabel asked worried that maybe Max was trying to lie to himself in order to survive without Liz.

“You guys have to believe me!” Max pleaded.

“I believe you.” Maria spoke up as she stepped up. “When Liz and I were in Winnaman Academy, she knew some how that you had died. I didn’t believe her until we actually found out it was true. I didn’t believe her when she said an alien killed Alex…if you say she’s alive…I can’t doubt you for Liz’s sake.”

“So if Liz’s really alive…then where the hell is she?” Michael asked.

Sacred Heart Hospital

“Hey. Hey. Hey.” Donny calls out to Liz when he spots her leaving the main hospital sliding doors. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“I-I have to go. I have to go.” Liz stuttered.

“Go where?” Donny asked, holding Liz from her shoulders.

“I don’t know where. But I have to go.” Liz answered in a panic.

“Wait.”

“No, I’m not going back in there.” Liz said sternly.

“Okay, okay, you don’t have to go back. Just give me an address and I’ll take you there.” Donny offered as he watched her struggle mentally to remember. “The doctor said you’re repressing what happened. You can’t be wondering the streets of Phoenix alone…so stick with me and…and I’ll help you try to remember who you are, okay?”

“I don’t even know who you are.” Liz said protectively stepping back a bit.

“I’m a cop. See.” Donny said handing her his badge.

“Detective Dominic Roma.” Liz read out loud. “Can I trust you Detective Roma?”

“Yes, you can.” Donny assured her as he held out his hand. Liz was still hesitant at first, but then finally gave in and placed her hand in Donny’s, and followed him to his Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Michael’s Apartment

“So, let me get this straight, Maxwell. You want to break back into Eagle Rock Military Base and do what? Room to room searches?” Michael asked unsettled with Max’s un-rational request. “It’s suicide.”

“Michael, I have to find her.” Max declared, looking Michael face-to-face.

“Why does everyone act like I don’t have any powers?” Isabel asked standing between the two, to prevent them from going at it. “I got into Liz’s mind before. I can do it again.” Isabel said taking the wedding photo Maria was looking at and then laid on the couch. She touches Liz’s photo and then shuts her eyes and begins to focus. When she finally entered Liz’s mind, she sensed something was wrong. It was completely dark. She focused harder, and then the images in Liz’s mind changed from blurry to impressionistic. There was a quick flash of Liz in an ambulance and then another of Liz out side of a hospital talking to a guy and then an image of his badge. Isabel tried to focus on the words on the badge, only making out ‘Phoenix Police’ and ‘Detective Dominic Roma’, before she was pushed out of Liz’s mind and back into reality.

“What’d you see?” Max asked worriedly as he saw Isabel open her eyes.

“She’s in Phoenix.” Isabel announced, as she looked around to see everyone’s shocked faces.

Chapter 12

Song: I Think of You by Ivy

Roswell Sheriff Station

“I can’t believe we’re breaking in here for the second time.” Isabel said as the crept in after the new Sheriff was seen leaving the Sheriff’s Station and climbed up the drainpipe. “It must be like Christmas for you.” Isabel waved her hand over the lock and unlocked the window grate, and they both climbed in. Isabel started the computer while Michael handled the security alarm. “Alright, Dom-i-nic Ro-ma.” Isabel pronounced as she typed in the guys information. His police file popped up and Isabel clicked on the print option. “Alright, grab the print out and let’s get out of here.” Isabel ordered.

“Oh, yeah. Now it feels like Christmas.” Michael commented before grabbing the sheet.

Michael’s Apartment

“We got it!” Michael announce as he stormed in his apartment shaking the print out.

“Alright, let’s go. If we hurry, we’ll get there in five hours.” Max said grabbing his jacket and bolted out the door with Michael and Maria following behind him.

“Be careful.” Isabel yelled as she closed the door and hugged Jesse for comfort.

Phoenix Bus Station

4 Hours Later

“Hello? Burns? I’m here.” The doctor announced as he looked around in a panic as he sways in front of the pay phone.

“I’ll send my driver.” Burns answers and then hangs up.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

“Where are we?” Liz asked looking out of the passenger side window to a brown 3-story building.

“This is my place.” Donny answered cautiously. “I can take you to the precinct if you’d feel more comfortable there?” Donny suggested as he prepared himself to re-start the engine.

“No, here’s fine. I just really, really need to lie down.” Liz said rubbing the sides of her head.

“Okay.” Donny said getting out of the car and jogging over to her side to help her out.

Roma’s Apartment

“Sorry for the mess.” Donny apologized as he attempted to straighten up.

“It’s okay.” Liz said with a light smile as she sat on his two-seat sofa.

“So you really don’t remember what happened to you?” Donny asked, but when he turned to look at Liz, she had fallen fast asleep on his couch, curled up into a little ball. Donny grabbed the unfolded cover from the bed and covered her with it and continued to straighten his place up.

Phoenix Inn

“So what is it?” Burns asked impatiently.

“This.” The Doctor said with a huge smile holding up a videocassette. “Remember we only could get the camera’s to work on the outside perimeter?” The doctor asked and paused to see if Burns recalled, seeing him nod. “We’ll look what camera 4 picked up.” The doctor popped in the tape into the inns VCR and hit the ‘play’ button anxiously. Burns watched as the video starts up, and the shot is at an angle, recording three men with ski masks at the fence, but only two armed. They unarmed man holding out his hand in front of the fence and causing it to magically cut a hole so they could get through to the other side. Burns eyes widen at the sight.

“Pierce was right.” Burns mumbles in awe. The three camouflaged men get out of the view of the camera but then later return with a fourth. Max Evans. “I don’t care if we have to search under every rock, we have to find Max Evans. We find him, we find out who this freak is.”

“So what do you want me to do?” The doctor asked.

“Stay out of sight for now. I’ll call you when I need you.” Burns said heading towards the VCR to get the tape but was blocked by the doctor.

“I’ll hold onto the tape for now.” The doctor said sternly.

“Very well. I’ll be in touch so be ready.” Burns advised and then left the doctor in the hotel room.

Roma’s Apartment

I think of you
Whenever I'm alone.
Whenever I get lonely.
I think of you
Wherever you may go.
I know that you are only
One dream away.

While Liz slept, Donny watched her as she tossed in turned but not from a nightmare, it appeared to be a very good dream.

So don't give up, baby.
Don't give in.
If we try we can begin again.
I know what we've been through.
But I still think of you.

Liz was dreaming of making love to a dark-haired mysterious guy, but couldn’t remember his name, the only thing she could gather was the emotion, the raw passion and love the two of them felt as the made love.

'I wanted this for so long.'

'You don’t know how long I’ve wanted you…needed you like this.'

'Well, now you have me.'

I think of you
Whenever I get down.
Whenever I get weary.
I think of you
When you're not around.
I wonder if you hear me
Call out your name.

Liz sat up, sweaty and shaky, to find Donny looking at her mystified.

So don't give up, baby.
Don't give in.
If we try we can begin again.
I know what we've been through.
But I still think of you.

“Are you okay?” He asked bewildered. Liz bit on her lower lip from embarrassment wondering if she was talking in her sleep.

“Did I say anything?” Liz asked worriedly as she gripped the couch.

“Just a lot of moaning.” Donny answered blushing himself. “Did you remember anything?”

“Just this guy. I-I think he was my boyfriend.” Liz replied confused.

“When I first found you, you called out the name Max. Does that ring a bell?” Donny asked, seeing Liz trying to remember, but shook her head in disappointment. “Don’t worry. It’ll come to you.”

Phoenix Inn

“Alright, Maria. We’re going to get you checked in, okay? Start calling hospitals to see if they picked up anyone matching Liz’s description, then call me on my cell if you do, we’ll go to this Roma’s house .” Max assigned as he and Michael got out of the Chevelle, they began to head for the inn’s office when a familiar man caught Max’s attention.

“What? What is it?” Michael asked after Max came to a screeching halt.

“That’s the man that was…back at the…” Max murmured not being able to complete his sentence as he pointed to a man returning to his room with an ice bucket. Michael was about to ask him if he was sure, but knew that Max would never forget what happened back at the base.

“What’s he doing here?” Michael asked skeptically.

“I don’t know.” Max answered,

“We’ll let’s go over there and find out.” Michael suggested, and without hesitation Max followed right behind, while Maria hopped out of the car and crept behind them.

Chapter 12

Roma’s Apratment

“How can I not know who I am?” Liz said running her hands through her long hair frustrated.

“Relax, don’t push yourself.” Donny advised, handing her a glass of water. Liz took two gulps ands the lowered the glass on the coffee table Donny was sitting on. She tucked her hands between her knees and began to scan the room. The apartment was very plain. Leather recliner, two-seat sofa, un-made bed, dirty laundry, everything just screamed bachelor.

“Do you have a dog?” Liz asked curiously, seeing that was the only thing that was missing from the bachelor/cop picture. She expected he’d have a German Shepard named Kujo or Hank that would attack on command, being the basic model of a cop dog.

“No.” Donny answered, arching his eyebrow interested in why she would ask such a question. “Why? Does my place smell like I do?”

“Oh, no, it’s just that it looks like you live alone…I just assumed you had a dog.” Liz said biting her lip in embarrassment.

“Um, that’s just an action cop stereotype. I’m not Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis…I’m not a renegade cop that’s trigger happy like you see in Lethal Weapon and Die Hard…” Donny corrected with a faint smile.

“I didn’t mean to…”

“I have fishes.” Donny added quickly before she could begin to apologize. “Well, I had fishes. They died. I forgot to feed them.” He said with a small chuckle, making Liz laugh as well, their laughs ceased and an awkward silence was left. “Do you want to take a drive? Maybe it might jolt your memory.” Donny suggested, breaking to silence.

“Sure.” Liz answered and followed him out the door.

Phoenix Inn

The doctor enters his room whistling and closes the door with his leg, Max quickly stops the door from closing and slips in. The doctor places the ice bucket on the table and then stops, letting out the rest of the whistle when he noticed he didn’t hear the door shut, he turns around slowly and sees Max and Michael standing in his room and then Maria creeping in.

“Maria, go start the car, this won’t take long.” Michael ordered. Maria quickly ran back to the Chevelle, not wanting to witness what was about to happen.

“So you must be the masked hero from the video.” The doctor said trying to play of that he wasn’t afraid. But deep down inside he could feel his heart beating so fast, he was afraid it might burst from them adrenaline.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Michael asked confused, noticing the doctor subconsciously looking to the VCR.

“Nothing.” The doctor quickly answered. Michael looked over at Max and then walked boldly to the VCR and pressed play. The video began to play and revealed Michael using his powers to cut the fence.

“Nothing. Right.” Michael said tucking the tape in the back of his pants.

“Doesn’t matter. The FBI already knows about the tape.” The doctor announced. “They’ll be breaking down your doors…”

“Hey, what makes you think they didn’t already know about us?” Michael asked. “That Medical Research Lab, how do you think we know about it? We’re the ones that shut it down.” Michael informed him with a hint of rage in his eyes. “So what do want to do with him Maxwell?” Michael asked anxiously as he cracked his knuckles.

“Whatever we do, I want it to be slow and painful.” Max said with anger and hatred trembling in his voice as he stepped beside Michael.

“You’re the King.” Michael said with a sly smirk, seeing the look of shock hit the doctor’s face.

“Make him sit.” Max ordered, Michael held up his hand and used his powers to force the doctor down and held his hand up to prevent him from moving. “You guys picked the wrong alien to ‘interrogate’.” Max said in a warning tone.

“Yep, I thought the FBI was suppose to be the Mecca ‘intelligence’…now I know who guys are complete idiots.” Michael commented.

“What makes you say that?” The doctor asked, giving up on struggling against Michael’s powers.

“Taking me is one thing…but Liz…” Max said becoming more enraged.

“Big mistake.” Michael finished Max’s threat. Max dug in the doctor’s pocket and pulled out his wallet and then tossed it to Michael. “Dr. Peter Stanfield. Roswell, New Mexico. We got ourselves a local. Oh and look, little Bobby and Sally Sue with their pet, Golden Retriever, Spot. Quite the suburban family, aren’t you, Doc?” Michael asked with mischief behind his voice.

“Please, don’t hurt my family.” The doctor begged.

“Should of thought about that when you started hurting mine.” Max threatened and then moved to sit on the bed. “We’re not animals. This has nothing to do with your family. This is about you and my revenge on what you put me and Liz through.” Max said, looking at the doctor for a moment and then pressing his hand his chest.

“Nooo!” The doctor yelled in pain as Max used his powers to boil him from the inside out. Max stepped back and looked at the doctor, thinking to himself, ‘one down’.

“Maxwell, we got to go.” Michael ordered, pulling Max out of the room. The two of them ran to the Chevelle and hopped in and Maria stepped on the gas, leaving a cloud of dust behind them. Moments after, the man from the next room came out, after hearing all the commotion and spotted the door open with a dead man on one of the inn’s chairs.

“Oh, my Lord!” The man yelled and ran back to his room dialing 9-1-1. “Hello? Police. There’s been a murder at the Phoenix Inn. Hurry!”

Jeep Grand Cherokee

“So, do you want to get something to eat or something?” Donny asked, making a left turn, as his cell phone began to ring. “Hold on.” He told Liz as he picked up his phone. “Roma.” He answered.

‘Yo, Roma. We got a stiff here at the Phoenix Inn. What’s your ETA?’

“Uh…” Donny trailed off looking at Liz, who was giving him an ‘it’s okay’ look. “5 minutes.” He answered and then hung up the phone.

“Duty calls?” Liz asked.

“Yeah, this won’t take long.” Donny said making a U-turn as he attached the single, red, siren light on the roof of his car and sped to the crime scene.

Phoenix Inn

By the time they reached the inn, yellow crime scene tape blocked the entrance of Room #19. Donny spotted Wess taking statements from a man. He took Liz’s hand and headed over to him, waving his badge to the uniforms that attempted to stop them. “What do we got?”

“The weirdest thing I have ever seen. The guy is cooked from the inside out.” Wess informed him, and then noticed Liz’s tiny frame standing behind Donny. “Is this the vic?” Wess asked, pointing to Liz with his chin.

“Uh, yeah.” Donny answer turning a little so Liz could step up. “Uh, this is my partner, Detective David Wess.” Donny introduced.

“Still no go with the memories, huh?” Wess asked Liz. Liz nodded her head ‘no’. “So, wanna take a look?” Wess asked Donny as he handed him a pair of medical gloves.

“Yeah.” Donny answered, snapping the gloves on and the followed Wess in, turning on his heels to see where Liz was, and finding her trailing right behind him. “Uh, maybe you should stay out here.” Donny suggested, seeing her look around frightened. “Just stay close and don’t touch anything, okay?” He ordered. Liz nodded and followed closely behind him.

“No wallet. The manager says his name is Dr. Peter Stanfield. Got a copy of his ID.” Wess read off from his notepad. Liz approached the body, unable to see the man’s face since it was tilt back almost as if the neck had been snapped. She then noticed something silver peeking through the man’s business shirt, who’s buttons were completely melted off, and waited until she saw Donny and Wess talking to the side, before she peeked underneath and spotted a silver handprint. The sight knocked her off her feet, and suddenly a rush of memories started to flow through her mind. She saw images of her being shot, of Max healing her, of the same handprint on her stomach as she looked at herself in her mirror, of their first date, Christmas, them in prison, them making love, her premonitions, and the awful time they endured in Eagle Rock Military Rock. And just s quick, the feeling of Max vibrated all over her.

‘He’s alive!’ She thought.

“Max!” Liz exclaimed, startling Donny and Wess. Donny quickly ran to her side as she gripped her stomach and sat on the bed, dizzy from the head rush she just suffered. “I remember.”

Thanks for reading guys. I don't know if the fic is going to finish just yet. I have to figure out what the sequel is going to be about, if it comes to that. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm already brainstorming another fic that just came to my head. I just had to jot it down on paper so I've been writing notes all night. :P

Chapter 13

Song: I Will Return To You by K's Choice

Today there's nothing more to say
But someday I'll return to you
Today things didn't go our way
Maybe tomorrow I will return to you

Today I'd like to slip away from all this pain
Someday, I'll return to you
Today I'd like to be a cell inside your vein
Maybe tomorrow I will return to you

Once more I'd like to put a spider in your bed
For that, I will return to you
I want you to hear the things I never said
For that, I will return to you
Someday, I'll return to you

Dry the rain inside my head
To hear the things I never said
I will return to you

To be a light beam through a cloud
To laugh at things I'm singing now
I will, I will return to you
I will return to you, to you
I will return to you
Someday I'll return to you
I will return to you
Maybe tomorrow I will return to you

Phoenix Inn

“I remember.” Liz repeated looking at Donny face-to-face. “I-I have to go.” Liz said as she stood up, but was held back by Donny.

“Wait a minute. You have to report what happened to you now that you remember.” Donny advised.

“I can’t. I have to go.” Liz said pushing past Donny and Wess, touching the VCR and getting of flash of Max and Donny fighting in Donny’s apartment.

“Where are you going?” Donny asked following behind her. “Wait. We can put who ever did this to behind bars all you have to do…”

“No. No they won’t go to jail. They never do.” Liz yelled.

“They?” Donny repeated. “This happened before?”

“Not to me. To Max.” Liz answered heartbroken, to think that Max had to endure that base for the second time. The first time Liz had left Max, this time she wasn’t going to make that mistake. She had to find him.

“Hey, I’ll make sure they get locked up, you just have to trust me.”

“I don’t know if I can.” Liz answered.

“You can, just let me help you?” Donny pleaded.

“If you really want to help me…take me back to your apartment.” Liz asked, seeing the confuse look Donny gave her, but accepted either way.

Al’s T.V. Repair

Burns had been walking from his parking spot to his hideout he had about a block away. He walked straight and scanned the street as he was trained to do, just when he was passing a T.V. repair shop with a few people watching the different size and model T.V.’s that were turned on to the same channel, his attention was grabbed when the news reporter began to speak.

‘That’s right Bob. A real mystery here at the Phoenix Inn. I’m standing in front of Room#19 where the tragic event happened. Police aren’t releasing enough information, but from what we gathered, a man was killed by ways unknown as we can see here the coroner’s are already loading up the body to take him to be examined. All that’s being released is that the man was in his mid 40‘s and his named was Dr. Peter Stanfield of Roswell, New Mexico. If anyone has any information, Phoenix Police ask that you call into the witness hotline with anything…’

Burns began to walk away, dialing the driver from before on his cell phone. “Meet me in ten minutes. We have to go to the Phoenix Morgue.”

Donny’s Apartment
Song: Bleed To Love Her by Fleetwood Mac

Liz anxiously waited as Donny opened up the dead bolt of his apartment. She pushed passed him and began scanning the room until she froze when she saw Max standing in the shadows with Michael on the side and Maria beside him. “What are you…” Donny was asking, noticing she was searching for something and then spotted three strangers in his apartment and pulled out his gun from behind him. “Who are you?” He demanded an answer as he took turns pointing at each trespasser with his gun.

“Max!” Liz exclaimed in tears as she ran to him and hugged him tightly. “Max. I love you. I love you.” Liz said kissing him all over.

“I knew you couldn’t leave me.” Max said kissing her just as frantically as Liz was. “I love you.” Donny began to lower his gun, clicking the safety back on when he noticed Liz knew who they were. “Let’s get out of here.” Max ordered, taking Liz’s hand, with Michael and Maria following but only managing to take a few steps because Donny drew his gun again to prevent them from leaving. Instinctively Max and Michael stood in front of Liz and Maria to shield them.

“You’re not going anywhere until I get some answers.” Donny threatened, noticing Max had been severely beaten as well.

“Get out of the way.” Michael ordered, about to hold out his hand but Liz stopped him before he could.

“Michael, no.” Liz defended. “He’s a good guy. He helped me.”

“He’s the cop Isabel saw?” Max asked looking at Liz quickly to she her nod and then looked back at Donny. “Roma? Right? I want to thank you for taking care of Liz. I don’t know how I can every repay you…”

“Repay me by telling me what the hell is going on? Who are you? Who did this to you two?” Donny questioned, still not lowering his weapon.

“We can’t tell you.” Max answered. Meanwhile behind Max, Liz noticed blood seeping through Max’s shirt, very delicately she lifted his shirt and saw the awful mess he was in.

“Max?” Liz called out, Max turned his head to look and noticed her lifting the back of his shirt and gave her a sorrowful gaze that just tore Liz’s heart up, and then stepped out in front of him.

Once again she steals away
Then she reaches out to kiss me
And how she takes my breath away
Pretending that she don't miss me

Ooh, I would bleed to love her
Ooh, bleed to love her
Ooh, I would bleed to love her

And once again she calls to me
Then she vanishes in thin air
And how she takes my breath away (breath away)
Pretending that she's not there

Ooh, I would bleed to love her
Ooh, bleed to love her
Ooh, I would bleed to love her

Somebody's got to see this through
All the world is laughing at you
And somebody's got to sacrifice
If this whole thing's gonna turn out right

Ooh, I would bleed to love her
Ooh, bleed to love her
Ooh, I would bleed to love her
Bleed to love her
Bleed to love her

“Dominic, I asked you before if I could trust you and you told me yes. Please, put the gun down and I’ll explain everything.” Liz promised ignoring the worried looks Michael and Max were giving her.

“I want to know everything.” Donny demanded.

“Okay.” Liz answered.

Chapter 14

Song: This Time by 3 Doors Down

“Liz, you can’t make this decision for all of us. You only known this guy for a few hours.” Michael stated.

“Well, we can do it two ways Michael. One where were not a threat or your way where we show him how you are anyways and he considers us a threat.” Liz replied.

“You know what’s funny. When this all started, it was just you we had to worry about…now it’s you, Maria, Kyle, Alex, Valenti, Jesse, Max’s parents, and now this guy. You turned this into a freaking fan club.” Michael snorted, shaking his head and then looked at Max for his final word. “She’s your girlfriend.”

“What the hell is that suppose to mean?” Maria asked in her feminist tone. “Look, from the three years you’ve known Liz, have you ever had a reason to doubt her?” Maria asked getting her answer from Michael’s silence. “Proved my point. Now if Liz says she trusts him then that means I trust him too.” Maria defended.

“Are you done with the huddle, so you can tell me already?” Donny asked impatiently as he watched them whisper at the opposite side of the room. Then Liz looked at Max to confirm that he knew she was about to start explaining.

“Dominic, the thing is…we’re a family…a special type of family…”

“Very special.” Maria added to Liz’s opening statement.

“Too special…and when people find out how special we are…they tend to get…”

“Killer Instinct on us.” Michael finished.

“So why is your family so ‘special’?” Donny asked.

“Because of who I am…who me and Michael are.” Max answered.

“And who are you?” Donny asked intrigued.

“Let’s just say, bigger VIP’s then the President and Elvis put together.” Maria answered.

“We’re that special.” Michael added with a serious smirk.

“So how do you two fall into the picture?” Donny asked pointing to Liz and Maria, seeing the four of them looking at each other and blush.

“They’re with us...” Max said holding Liz closer to him as Michael did with Maria.

“…and since we know who they are…it makes us accessories.” Liz finished.

“Is the reason why you’re so ‘special’ illegal?” Donny asked firmly in his cop voice.

“No.” They all answered.

“You can’t get punishment like that if there isn’t something illegal going on.” Donny added in disbelief.

“Listen, Detective. I can assure you that we’re not involved in anything illegal and by looking at us there’s proof enough that there’s such punishment...the people we tell, end up being as in danger as we are. Liz and Maria with the others put their lives at stake just by knowing us and by the two of them being our girlfriends…they’re more of a target to our enemies.” Max explains.

“So who’s your enemy?” Donny asked.

“The FBI.” Michael answered, seeing Donny’s look change to skeptical.

“No, Dominic, not the FBI, a secret organization called the Special Unit that’s buried within the FBI. They think Max and Michael are responsible for something that there’s no possible way that they could be responsible for. But they believe this so much that there’s no changing their minds.” Liz explained. “And that’s why we can’t go to the police and tell them what happened to us…believe me if this was under different circumstances…I’d be signing my statement right…” Liz stopped when she remembered about the rape kit they did on her and then suddenly her face turned pale white, feeling the room spinning she tripped over Michael’s feet as she stepped back and fell back on the couch.

“Liz?” Max called out worried. “Did you have a vision?” Max whispered, seeing Liz’s head shake ‘no’.

“Liz, what’s wrong?” Maria asked concerned.

“Max, I-I…” Liz didn’t know what to say, just staring back at Max’s worried face made her feel even more guilty then what she felt. “Max we need to talk. Private. It’s important.” Liz whispered to him. “I guess I’m still feeling light headed.” Liz announced to Donny, noticing he was concerned for her as well. Max helped her up and then they went back to the opposite end of the room, this time just them two, while Maria and Michael made sure Donny didn’t intervene.

“What is it?” Max asked cupping her cheek.

“Max, when Dominic found me, he took me to the hospital they did a…a test on me to see if I was…you know…because of how I was when they found me…so they’re going to think…because me and you made love before all this happened. Max, I’m so sorry. I let this get so out of hand.”

“Liz it’s okay. We’ll take care of it.” Max promised kissing the top of her head.

“No, Max we have to take care of the guy they found at the inn…he had the handprint on him.” Liz informed him. “They took him to the coroner’s, we have to get there before they check out the body.” Liz advised, Max nodded and moved towards Michael.

“We have to go now.” Max announced in a demanding tone.

“Go? Wait, I’m not done asking questions.” Donny said stepping in front of them.

“Look, we don’t have time to sit here and answer you’re questions. We have to go now, our lives depend on it.” Max declared. “It’s our responsibility to make sure nothing happens to Maria and Liz.”

“Maxwell, what’s going on?” Michael asked seeing Max’s sudden urge to leave.

“Remember when I touched Liz’s stomach the first time we met?” Max asked with hidden meaning, Michael’s eyes widen when he figured out what Max was insinuating and pushed pass Donny.

“I’m coming with you.” Donny declared as he followed behind them.

Phoenix Morgue

By the time they reached the morgue federal vehicles surround the parking lot. A handful of Agent’s were walking around and one agent in particular caught Max and Liz’s attention. Agent Burns came out from the building and shortly after two agents came out wheeling a black body bag that they could only assume it belong to Dr. Peter Stanfield.

“What’s going on?” Donny asked, as he tried to get a better view from the bushes they were hiding behind.

“It’s too late.” Max announce with a saddened voice, knowing that this was another battle they had to prepare for.

“Max, what are we going to do?” Liz asked.

Unsure of yourself
You stand all righted and now
We sure will led you there
Last time you fell and you hit hard
Your wounds have healed by now
But you still see your scars yeah

But it’s not the way it used to be right now
You come so far to just let this go my friend
Don't go out the same way you did the last time
You’ll break when you fall
Don’t make the same mistakes you did all over
You’ve got to believe in yourself this time

Live on, live it up today
This life’s your cup
So drink it up I say, yeah
Say it’s mine so give it all up to me now
And walk that line, don’t let this go my friend

Don't go out the same way you did the last time
You'll break when you fall
Don’t make the same mistakes you did all over
You’ve got to believe in yourself this time, this time

Life’s your cup, life’s your cup
Drink it up
Life’s your cup, life’s your cup

The same way you did the last time
You’ll break when you fall
Don’t make the same mistakes you did all over
You got to believe in yourself
You got to believe in yourself this time

Chapter 15

Song: The End by Flick

Phoenix Morgue

“Max, what are we going to do?” Liz asked.

“Maxwell?” Michael called out when Max didn’t answer Liz.

“We have to leave.” Max commanded.

“If we speed, we can get to Roswell by midnight.” Michael calculated.

“Wait, what’s going on? Why are they taking the body?” Donny asked, grabbing Max’s arm to make sure he didn’t leave. “Do you have something to do with this body?”

“Let go of me.” Max threatened. Donny wasn’t prepared to let go but when he saw Michael adjusting himself to be more mobile and then Maria and Liz holding on to each other in worry, slowly causing him to release his grip.

“Let’s go.” Michael ordered, creeping at first until they were out of sight range and then sprinting to the Chevelle with everyone behind him.

“Liz.” Donny called out, making her stop dead on her tracks hearing him call her by her name for the first time. “What am I suppose to do?”

“You never met any of us.” Liz advised. “It’ll be safer for you that way.”

“Just tell me one thing…did you guys murder that man back there?” Donny asked.

“Can’t murder someone that isn’t human.” Liz answered sadly and then climbed into the Chevelle.

The Chevelle

“Max, I wish I could heal these for you.” Liz whispered in Max ear as she examined his back. Max had healed all his other wounds and Liz’s as well, but couldn’t reach the one’s in his back. Liz was pretty sure that he wanted to leave them as a reminder of what had happened. Scar or no scar, it would always be with them.

“Isabel, it’s Michael. Max said for Jesse to take the job in Boston. Our covers blown big time…What? No, Valenti and Kyle can stay. If they want to leave that’s up to them. Us? We don’t know and it’s better if you don’t know either...I promise…we love you.” Michael confessed and then hung up Maria’s cell and tossed it to the side of the road. “We can still drop you off.” Michael suggested to Maria.

“No. I’m staying with you.” Maria declared. Michael gave her a faint smile of gratitude and gripped the wheel tighter.

“So, pick a direction. North? South? East? West?” Michael announced to no one in particular.

“I’ve always liked the snow.” Max commented. Michael looked back real quick to see Max smiling weakly, as he was being caressed by Liz and then looked at Maria, who nodded in agreement, and then back on the road.

“North it is.” Michael announced as he pressed his foot on the accelerator.

Donny’s Apartment

The Next Day

“Hello?” Donny called out answering his telephone.

‘Detective Roma? This is Dr. Emerson. I just called to let you know that we got the results from your Jane Doe's rape kit and you’re not going to believe this…I can’t even believe it…hey, hey, that’s private property…’

“Hello? Dr. Emerson?” Donny called out when he heard her arguing with a man.

‘…you can take that…that’s private property…I don’t care if you’re the FBI, CIA, or the President himself...where’s your warrant…’

‘Liz?’
Donny thought worriedly. He got up quickly and shoved an assorted collection of clothes into his duffel bag and then ran out the door. He tossed his duffel into the back of his Cherokee and then dial his precinct. “Hey, Chief. Roma here. You know that vacation time that we were talking about. Starting now would be great.”
