Chapter 11
’Agent Burns.’
’Doctor. I thought you’d be half way round the world by now.’
’Believe me I would have if it wasn’t for what I found.’
’Enlighten me.’
’Not over the phone. We have to meet.’
’I’m still in Phoenix. Get over here and then contact me again.’
’I’ll be there.’
Sacred Heart Hospital
“What happened?” Donny asked following the doctor outside Liz’s room. “When I found her she seemed to know who she was. She said the name…Max and then asked me if she was in Las Cruces.” Donny informed the doctor.
“She’s emotionally repressing what happened. In extenuating circumstances like she’s been through, it tends to happen.” The doctor continued and then looked over to the nurse behind the booth. “I need this in lab ASAP.” She said handing Liz’s rape kit over to the nurse.
“So what do we do until then?” Donny asked tapping on the wall.
“It’s only temporarily.” The doctor advised seeing the detective’s persistence.
“Hey, Roma!” Wess called out from the end of the corridor and ran up to him and the doctor, with his badge swaying side to side.
“Um, Dr. Emerson, this is my partner Detective David Wess.” Donny introduced.
“Nice to meet you.” The doctor spoke shaking his hand and headed over to the patient board to make some adjustments.
“So, what happened to you, man? One minute we’re chasing down clepto Luis and the next you’re rushing a vic here?” Wess questioned. “Which, by the way I had to find out from a uniform instead of my own partner.”
“I’m sorry, man. Just that…it was bad.” Donny apologized.
“So where is she, if I can safely assume it’s a she?” Wess asked intrigued.
“She’s over here.” Donny said walking to Liz’s room, but when they turned the corner of the curtain that covered the hospital bed, she was gone.
“So where is she?” Wess asked.
Michael’s Apartment
“What do you mean she’s alive?” Michael asked completely confused by Max’s sudden epiphany.
“She’s alive Michael. I can feel her inside.” Max described with an anxious smile as he clutched his chest.
“Max, are you sure you’re just not…I don’t want you to live on false hope.” Isabel asked worried that maybe Max was trying to lie to himself in order to survive without Liz.
“You guys have to believe me!” Max pleaded.
“I believe you.” Maria spoke up as she stepped up. “When Liz and I were in Winnaman Academy, she knew some how that you had died. I didn’t believe her until we actually found out it was true. I didn’t believe her when she said an alien killed Alex…if you say she’s alive…I can’t doubt you for Liz’s sake.”
“So if Liz’s really alive…then where the hell is she?” Michael asked.
Sacred Heart Hospital
“Hey. Hey. Hey.” Donny calls out to Liz when he spots her leaving the main hospital sliding doors. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“I-I have to go. I have to go.” Liz stuttered.
“Go where?” Donny asked, holding Liz from her shoulders.
“I don’t know where. But I have to go.” Liz answered in a panic.
“Wait.”
“No, I’m not going back in there.” Liz said sternly.
“Okay, okay, you don’t have to go back. Just give me an address and I’ll take you there.” Donny offered as he watched her struggle mentally to remember. “The doctor said you’re repressing what happened. You can’t be wondering the streets of Phoenix alone…so stick with me and…and I’ll help you try to remember who you are, okay?”
“I don’t even know who you are.” Liz said protectively stepping back a bit.
“I’m a cop. See.” Donny said handing her his badge.
“Detective Dominic Roma.” Liz read out loud. “Can I trust you Detective Roma?”
“Yes, you can.” Donny assured her as he held out his hand. Liz was still hesitant at first, but then finally gave in and placed her hand in Donny’s, and followed him to his Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Michael’s Apartment
“So, let me get this straight, Maxwell. You want to break back into Eagle Rock Military Base and do what? Room to room searches?” Michael asked unsettled with Max’s un-rational request. “It’s suicide.”
“Michael, I have to find her.” Max declared, looking Michael face-to-face.
“Why does everyone act like I don’t have any powers?” Isabel asked standing between the two, to prevent them from going at it. “I got into Liz’s mind before. I can do it again.” Isabel said taking the wedding photo Maria was looking at and then laid on the couch. She touches Liz’s photo and then shuts her eyes and begins to focus. When she finally entered Liz’s mind, she sensed something was wrong. It was completely dark. She focused harder, and then the images in Liz’s mind changed from blurry to impressionistic. There was a quick flash of Liz in an ambulance and then another of Liz out side of a hospital talking to a guy and then an image of his badge. Isabel tried to focus on the words on the badge, only making out ‘Phoenix Police’ and ‘Detective Dominic Roma’, before she was pushed out of Liz’s mind and back into reality.
“What’d you see?” Max asked worriedly as he saw Isabel open her eyes.
“She’s in Phoenix.” Isabel announced, as she looked around to see everyone’s shocked faces.
