Part 11
Max

So it’s now Wednesday and I still cant get a hold of Liz. I’ve called her house, dropped by, waited for her at lunch, waited to drive her to and from school and it’s like she’s disappeared off the face of the earth. Using my time to track her down has worked in my favour though because it was a good way to avoid Tess after all. I ended up begging Alex and Isabel to take her home on Friday night so that I could take off after Liz. As far as I know the only one that knows what’s gong in Maria so far and she isn’t being very helpful.

I walk up to her regular lunch table on Wednesday and just as I expected she isn’t there. ‘Hey guys’ I say.

‘Hi’ they all reply.

‘Maria can you tell me where she is please?’ I finally break down and plead.

‘Max she went to visit her Grandma in Las Cruses for a few days she should be back tomorrow ok’ Maria sighs. I know that she didn’t want to tell me and I’m thankful that she did.

‘Thanks’ I reply before taking a seat and enjoying my lunch all the while thinking about how I’m going to convince Liz to talk to me tomorrow.

Liz

I know that he knows I’m back in Roswell, Maria told me he begged her for the information and she couldn’t hold out on those puppy dog eyes any longer. So now I just have to decide how to deal with it. Should I just pretend that I don’t care about the kiss or that I didn’t see it? Or should I continue to ignore him.

I decide on acting normally, continue with patterns and trying hard to keep up the act that I don’t care about who Max kisses or not. So with that decision made I am on my way over to his house this morning for my lift to school.

‘Liz’ he says surprised when I’m waiting in the car when he emerges from the house.

‘Hi’ I smile back, but deep down I want to cry. He looks so good like usual with his tight jeans and shirts that show off his Adonis body but why did things seem so much easier before the new look. Maybe that’s because I didn’t see people like Tess Harding hanging all over him I can’t help but think.

‘You’re back’ he says as he hops into the jeep.

‘Yep it was just a short visit since my grandma will be away during spring break’ I explain.

I continue on after that telling him everything about my last 3 days at my grandmas knowing that’s it’s the only way to stop the dreaded subject of Friday night coming up. I can see him throwing me confused looks from the corner of his eyes and when I mention Jack who is my grandma’s next-door neighbour I could have sworn he almost looked jealous, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part. Jack is about my age and has been living next to my grandma now ever since I can remember. We’ve had out fair share of summer and school holidays hook ups and apart from Max and Kyle, Jack is the only real experience I’ve ever had with a guy.

‘Jack?’ he asks me leaving the question hanging.

‘Oh he lives next door to Grandma Claudia’ I answer.

We’ve just reached school and I can see Maria and Alex waiting for me by the Jetta. I haven’t just been avoiding Max with my impromptu visit to Grandma Claudia’s I’ve also been avoiding my two best friends and I can see that they’re on the warpath.

‘Thanks for the ride Max’ I say before quickly jumping out of the jeep and heading for the safety of Maria and Alex.

Max

Okay so I wish I could tell you what just happened between Liz and me but that would be impossible because I’m totally confused. Did she see Tess kiss me on Friday night? Does she care? And the last question and definitely the most important at the moment is who the hell is this Jack guy.

I’m still contemplating the answers to all those questions at lunchtime when I try to decide where to sit. I feel bad for leaving Tess to sit by herself but I just haven’t had the guts to deal with her since she kissed me on Friday night and told me she wants to be my girlfriend. I just don’t have those types of feelings for Tess, and I mean at all. Making the decision I head to my usual lunch table and see Tess already sitting there. She looks surprised when I sit down across from her, guess she picked up on me avoiding her afterall.

‘Hey’ I say before shoving my sandwich in my mouth.

‘Hey, didn’t expect to see you sitting here today’ she tells me.

‘Yeah well I couldn’t avoid you forever’ I joke.

‘Was that what you were planning on doing?’ she asks then more seriously.

‘Nah probably not. Look I’m sorry I ran off on you on Friday night but you kind of took me by surprised’ I reply.

‘Yeah I know, so you didn’t really give me answer’ she says then and I almost choke on my sandwich, wasn’t my reaction a good enough answer for her. Did she really expect me to spell it out for her?

‘Listen Tess, I’m flattered but I only see you as a friend’ I finally answer.

‘Oh’ she replies and her face clouds over with a look I haven’t seen in a long time. If I wasn’t mistaken it looks like she is angry.

‘It’s because of Liz isn’t it?’ she says then.

‘Actually it has nothing to do with Liz I just don’t like you that way’ I tell her.

She gets up and then and this time it’s more than obvious that she’s pissed with my answer because she has packed up her stuff and stormed off.

Tess

He just doesn’t see me like that, just a friend. I wanted to jam that sandwich down his throat. I cant believe he would reject me just like that, oh and that bullshit about it having nothing to do with Liz Parker. I’m not stupid I’ve see the looks those two were throwing each other on Friday night which is why I picked that moment to kiss Max. I know perfect Parker saw it and I’m surprised that she hasn’t given him the brush off yet.

I try to calm myself down; it’s not over yet I just need to come up with a better plan. Max Evan’s is my ticket out of my miserable life and Roswell New Mexico and not even Liz Parker is going to stand in the way of that.

Part 12
Liz

So when Max didn’t come and sit with us at lunch so I assume he’s sitting with Tess, which I confirm when I make an excuse that I am going to the vending machine for a drink. I kept telling myself that I needed to see it with my own two eyes again to believe it and now I have. It’s time to move on.

I’m in the car park now waiting for a lift home by Max. I asked Maria but she had to head in the other direction to do something for her mum and couldn’t take me so I was stuck.

‘Hey’ he smiles as he approaches ‘Sorry got kept back by the coach who is trying to convince me to try out for the basketball team’ he laughs.

‘Wow that’s good. Are you going to?’ I know that’s he always loved his basketball and he’s really good. He tried out junior year but he didn’t make it, which most likely had more to do with the fact that they didn’t want a geek on the team than the fact that he wasn’t good enough.

‘We’ll see’ he smiles at me.

The ride home is pretty much silent except for the radio. I don’t know what to say to him and I don’t feel like pretending that everything is ok anymore.

He pulls into my driveway and I move to hop out quickly but before I can he’s raced around to assist me. I reluctantly let him help me out of the jeep.

‘So Isabel is having a bit of a party on Friday night for our birthday are you coming?’ he asks me.

Max and Isabel are 18 on Friday and if I hadn’t already agreed to go and for Flammable to play I would have said no.

‘Yeah we’re playing’ I shrug. I started writing a song, which I hoped I could sing for him at his birthday but I don’t think his girlfriend would like that very much.

‘Great’ he smiled, and it was that smile that makes you want to melt. I nod and begin to walk away.

‘Liz wait’ he calls after me as I reach the front door and fiddle around for my keys.

I look up at him and wait for him to say what he wants to say ‘What?’ I snap irritated at the way he’s looking at me. He shouldn’t be looking at me like that when he’s with Tess.

He takes a step back after my words. ‘I don’t know what you saw, or if you saw or I mean even if you care but it wasn’t what you think on Friday night’ he mumbled.

‘So you and Tess in a lip lock on the dance floor on Friday night after you told me that there was nothing going on between the two of you wasn’t what I thought’ I bit back.

‘Yes, No’ he replies. ‘No it wasn’t what you thought. She kissed me I didn’t want her to’ he says then.

My anger fades somewhat when he says that ‘you didn’t?’ I ask him then in a small voice.

‘God no’ he replies quickly.

‘So you aren’t interested is Tess at all?’ I ask to clarify. My heart is thundering right now as I wait for his answer. I see him take a step toward me and he reaches out and takes my hand in his own.

‘The only girl I’m interested in, is the girl that I’ve been in love with for as long as I can remember and it’s definitely not Tess Harding’ he tells me.

Max

I watch her face as I tell her that there’s nothing going on between Tess and I and then as it falls when I tell her that I love someone.

‘Oh’ she says then.

‘Don’t you know how I fell about you Liz?’ I tell her then and watch as her eyes snap up to mine and one of the most beautiful smiles I have ever seen emerges on her face.

‘Um no, I don’t think I do’ she tells me then

‘Well I better do something to fix that don’t you think’ I flirt back.

‘Yeah you should’ she tells me her face still lit up by that beautiful smile.

‘Will you be my date on Friday night?’ I ask her then praying that she’ll agree. I know that the band is playing and that that I probably wont get to spend much time with her but just knowing that she would want to go out with me would be enough for me.

‘I know it’s not the best first date but I don’t think I can wait any longer to ask you out’ I tell her honestly.

‘I’d love too’ she replies quickly.

‘Really?’ I ask her.

‘Looks like I’m not the only one that needs a little assurance’ she says then before she takes a step closer to me and her hand runs up my chest. I gasp at the feel of her small hand gliding up my chest and feel my body instantly becomes aroused. She moves in even closer to me now and I just want to reach down and brush my lips against hers.

‘We’re still on your front porch’ I tell her reluctantly. She takes a look around and realises that I’m right. I don’t want a possible audience for out first real kiss in almost 6 years.

She turns around and fiddles with her keys before unlocking the door and I follow her in. As soon as I close the door behind us I grab hold of her arm and pull her into my arms.

‘Now who’s Jack?’ I ask her.

She lets out a little laugh ‘I thought we covered Jack already this morning’

‘Hmm no, no we didn’t’ I reply.

‘Well can we talk about it later because talking about Jack isn’t what I want to be doing right now’ she tells me.

‘What is?’

Part 13
Liz

I can’t take my eyes off his beautiful lips and I know that I have to taste them.

‘This’ I tell him before reaching up on tippee toes and brushing my lips against his. I move to pull back when I feel his arms that are loosely around my waist tighten and pull he hard against his body. Oh and what it feels like to be pressed against his hard body.

His lips find mine again as he caresses them with his own. I think I’ve died and gone to heaven this is just as I remembered and knew it would be.

‘Max’ I moan into his mouth and he takes the opportunity to slip his tongue into my mouth. I immediately seek his tongue out with my own and when I find it we passionately slide them against each other. By this stage my hands have gone up around his neck and I’m praying to god that he is going to hold me up because I know my legs aren’t going to hold me for much longer.

I can hear Max’s cell phone ringing from somewhere in the back of my mind but I cant bring myself to stop kissing him so that he can answer it right now. Max tastes better than I ever could have imagined a great combination of sweet and spicy and I know I’ll never be able to get enough of it.

‘Lizzie is that your cell?’ my mother’s voice sounds through the house pulling us out of their kiss.

‘Wow’ he said as he rested his forehead against mine.

‘You can say that again’ I reply just before his phone starts up again.

‘You should get that’ I tell him with a smile.

‘Lizzie?’ I hear my mum’s voice again but this time it’s a lot louder than before so I take a step back from Max before she can see anything.

‘Hello’ Max says into the phone.

Max

‘Max where are you?’ Isabel says into the phone.

‘Um just dropping Liz off’ I tell her, and its not a lie just because I got sidetracked from achieving the drop off part.

‘Oh so I take it you finally got her to talk to you then?’ she asks me.

‘I guess you could say that’ I smile into the phone. Nancy Parker has made her way to where Liz and I are standing now and looking at us strangely. I think she’s probably trying to work out what I’m doing here.

‘Well I need the car I want to go to the mall to pick up something for tomorrow night’

‘Um ok I’ll have it in the driveway for you in 5 minutes’ I tell her before hanging up the phone.

‘Hello Max’ Nancy Parker smiles at me.

‘Hi Nancy how are you?’ I ask her before stepping forward to give her a hug. I might not have mentioned before but both the Parker and Evan’s families are close. You could say that I consider Nancy and Jeff as second parents and the same could be said for Liz and my parents.

‘Good thank you Max. Are you looking forwards to tomorrow?’ she asks me then and I assume that’s she referring to my 18th birthday.

‘Yeah I guess so’ I reply.

‘I better go Izzy wants the jeep’ I tell them before offering Liz a small secretive smile. I don’t want to leave before we talk about what’s going on but I know that Liz has band practice to get to and I have to get the jeep next door for Princess Isabel.

‘Ok I’ll see you tomorrow’ Liz says then and walks me to the door.

‘Bye Max’ says Nancy Parker as she walks back towards the kitchen. When I’m sure that she’s definitely gone I reach out and pull Liz into my arms again.

‘Is there something I can do for you Max before you leave?’ she smirks.

‘Yes Ms Parker there definitely is’ I reply before leaning forward and kissing her again.

Liz

So it’s Friday afternoon all ready and I’m trying to decide what to wear for my date/gig/ party at Max’s house tonight for both his and Isabel’s 18th birthday. Maria is coming over to help me out. I didn’t get the opportunity to see much of Max today since his parents let him have half a day off so that they could take him and Isabel to lunch. Today was the last day of school for 2 weeks and I can’t wait

I walk over to the draw that holds most of my latest purchases from Victorias Secret and I pull out a red set that I’ve been saving for a special occasion, and I think tonight is that special occasion.

I’m not sure exactly what’s going to happen between us but I would be lying if I told you that I wasn’t beyond sexually frustrated and it’s only gotten worse in the last few weeks since Max has started retaliating to my little underwear trick.

He leaves his window open just like mine and then does his chins up on the door directly opposite. He wears nothing but these tiny little shorts that leave nothing to the imagination, and believe me I have a good one. Oh and did I mention that this is all done facing my window. I just sit there and watch him lift himself up and down whilst all the muscles in his perfectly defined six pack contract and relax. Who would have guessed that there was a body of an Adonis under all those clothes.

I have another little surprise planned too but I don’t want to give too much away. All I know is that I’m ready for tonight and for whatever comes with it.

Max

I’m standing out the front of Liz’s front door and I’ve gotta tell you that I’m as nervous as hell right now. I know this isn’t really much for a first date and I plan on making that up to her as soon as we both get the chance.

I ring the doorbell and I only have to wait a couple of minutes before Maria opens it and gives me a huge grin. She looks me up and down before giving me her approval, something about me being too hot to handle tonight. I can’t help but think that if Maria weren’t happily dating my best friend I’d have to be a little worried about her.

‘Thanks’ I say.

‘Liz will be down in a minute and believe me girlfriend she looks like a million dollars.’ she tells me ‘So I’m just going to head over to the party ok’

‘Sure’ but I don’t respond any further because I cant move my eyes away from the goddess walking down the stairs.

Her hair is piled on top of her head, and she has on a tight black dress that stops mid thigh and is held up by spaghetti straps.

‘Wow’ I finally get out once she’s reached me ‘you look stunning’ I tell her. Stunning doesn’t seem like the right word but to tell you the truth I don’t think there would be words right now that would adequately cover how amazing she looks.

She smiles that smile at me then, you know the one that makes your knees go weak.

‘You look very nice too’ she replies. I look down at my black dress pants which I am wearing with a black button up shirt, I think it’s a little to tight by Isabel assures me I look hot in it and that Liz will think so too. I’m happy that she likes it.

‘Do you think it would inappropriate to get the goodnight kiss out of the way at the beginning of the night?’ I ask her as she takes another step towards me. I don’t know where all this confidence has come from. It must have something to do with the kiss we shared yesterday, I would never dream about saying something like that normally.

‘No not at all. In fact you should feel free to go right ahead with that’ she tells me.

I move forward and gently caress her lips with my own, I know that I should pull back but her eager response forces me to reach out and pull her to me.

Liz

I swear every time he kisses me it gets better and better. I feel his teeth tug gently on my bottom lip before he pulls it into his mouth. I take the opportunity to open my mouth and sweep my tongue across his bottom lip; I want entrance into his mouth. I want to discover every crevice and every taste. I can’t help but moan when his tongue darts out to meet mine, apparently just as eager to join the exploration.

When we finally pull apart I can’t help but moan when I take in his ravaged appearance. His hair has that messed up look now from where my hands ran through it and he is looking thoroughly kissed which is a look I’m looking forward to seeing on him a lot more.

‘God’ he groans. ‘You gotta stop looking at me that way, and stop looking that way’ he tells me, I laugh at the comment. I know that my eyes are devouring him, I feel like a starving woman at the moment and the only thing that will feed that hunger is the Adonis standing in front of me.

‘What am I looking like?’ I ask him.

‘Apart from sexy as hell you look ravaged’ he smirks in response.

‘Well we don’t want either of our parents seeing me look that way do we?’

‘No so we’ll just walk slowly’ he says before offering his hand. I happily take it and I cant help but stare dopily at out joined hands. Being with Max has been a dream of mine for some time. I still don’t know if either of us is completely ready for the reality but I cant wait to find out.


Max

The party has been in full swing for a few hours now and I have to admit I am having a good time. There are not too many people here thankfully and most of them are dancing to Flammable at the moment. I am standing at the back of the room watching and listening in awe. I cant deny that Liz is meant for the spotlight, she comes alive on stage when she is singing and I love that fact that she is so happy.

‘Hi everyone’ she says when they finish the song ‘the next song is a new one that I have written. Some of you may remember the beautiful song that was written for me that I performed a few weeks ago; well this is a song that I have written to the author of that song. They know who they are and now this is for you.’ She tells them before a beautiful melody starts and Liz’s voice follows.

When the song finished I gesture to the rest of the band that that’s it. I want to spend time with my date. It is his birthday after all and I have something very important to tell him. I’m just about to jump off the stage when Mrs Evan’s approaches and tells us that the cake is coming out and asks if we’ll sing happy birthday. I turn to Alex with a grin knowing that this is the perfect opportunity for him to show Isabel he’s interested.

He must be thinking the same thing I am because I don’t need to explain to him what I have in mind.

‘You in?’ I ask him.

‘You bet’ he replies.

Someone turns the lights out and we see the candles so we start our song. We approach Max and Isabel who are standing the middle of the room as we sing.

‘Happy birthday to you’ I sing in my best Marilyn Munroe voice.

‘Happy birthday to you’ Alex joins in.

‘Happy birthday dear Max’ I continued at is run a finger up his chest ‘And Isabel’ Alex adds blowing a kiss right into her face’

‘Happy birthday to you’ we finish together. (A/N: imagine Marilyn singing to Mr President).

Part 15
Max

Oh god I cant believe they did that. Isabel is totally embarrassed at the moment even though I know how much she loved it.

We blow out our 18th birthday cake together just like we have for every birthday before that. We have never missed a birthday together and I don’t suppose we ever will.

Dad thanks everyone for coming and helping us celebrate our introduction to adult hood before mum starts handing out cake.

‘Hey birthday boy’ I hear whispered huskily. I know it’s Liz, I would know that voice anywhere, and years of obsession will do that to a guy.

‘Hey yourself’ I smile before pulling her against me.

‘You having fun?’ she asks me.

‘I’d be having more fun if it was just you and me’ I reply honestly.

‘That can be arranged’ she tells me before grabbing my hand and pulling me out of the room. I thought once we reached outside we would stop but we don’t, we don’t stop until we reach her house, and more specifically her bedroom.

I’ve never been in here before so I quite happily look around for a few minutes.

‘It looks different from this side’ I tell her.

She laughs at that ‘I thought you would have had the room memorised by now’

‘Nah not interested in the room only the person who occupies it’ I tell her.

‘Noted’ she replies.

‘Thank you for my song’ I say then.

She’s quiet for a moment before she starts to approach me. My eyes are memorized by her swaying hips, she looks like a temptress right now and god I hope I’m her target.

‘Your welcome, did you understand what I was trying to tell you?’ she finally says as she puts her hands around my neck and brings our bodies into contact.

‘Um’ is all I can get out.

‘I’m in love with you Max Evans and I have been for quite a while’

I feel the grin form without thought. She loves me. Liz Parker loves me.

Before I know it I’m taking her mouth in the most passionate kiss I can muster. I want her to feel how much her words mean to me and how much I love her too. The kiss quickly turns heated and both our hands start roaming new territory. My hands are caressing her perfect ass while her hands have found their way under my shirt and she is caressing my chest and abs.

When I pull away I immediately move my mouth to her neck ‘so what about the part about moving slow?’ I mumbled between kisses.

‘I think we’ve moved slow enough’ she replies as her fingers go to work on the front of my shirt. When she has freed me from it I begin kissing her neck again using my tongue to slide one spaghetti strap off her shoulder before moving to the other. I feel her shiver before she decides to help me out by giving her dress a couple of tugs causing the material to fall down her body and pool at her feet.

I gasp when I take the sight before me. She is wearing a strapless red sheer bra and I can see her hard rosy nipples poking through begging to be devoured, a job I can’t wait to start. I let my eyes travel downward and take in the tiny matching g-string, which is barely covering the treasure that I ache to discover.

‘You are a goddess’ I tell her before we come together again in another passionate kiss.

Liz

2 Weeks Later

Today is the first day back at school after the holidays and even Isabel is returning with us after her parents agreed that she didn’t need to go to boarding school any longer. Max and I spent our entire break going on dates, which is something Max insisted on doing properly, but most of them ended with us making love in his car or at one of our houses. Making love was a huge step for us but now that it’s happened we cant keep our hands off each other.

‘Hey’ I greet my boyfriend with a lusty kiss as I jump in the jeep.

‘Hey yourself’ he replies huskily as we break apart. ‘Iz is catching a ride’ he tells me then as we move back towards each other’s lips as we wait for Isabel to join us.

‘How are you two going to get through the school day?’ she laughs as she hops in the back.

‘That’s why we need to get these kisses out of the road before we get there Iz’ I tell her with a laugh. Surprisingly enough Isabel doesn’t get upset at Max and my PDA’s like you would expect a sister too.

We arrive as school and enter West Roswell High for the first time hand in hand. People are staring at us, some congratulate us or slap Max on the back but we just ignore them and head to our lockers. It’s not important to Max or I what people think of our relationship, our parents included. Thankfully though they were very supportive when we told them that we were dating. I think the fact that my mum and Dianne had been hoping it would happen since we were born probably had something to do with it.

We stop at my locker first so that I can put away some books and grab what I need for the first couple of periods and then Max carries my books until we reach his locker. When we get there though Tess is waiting and she doesn’t look happy when she notices that we’re holding hands.

When we reach my locker we find Tess there and she doesn’t look very happy. I guess she didn’t hear about Liz and I over the holidays. I probably should have told her myself considering her feelings for me but the truth is that I just didn’t think about it. When I’m with Liz she’s the only thing I think about.

‘Hi Tess’ Liz and I both greet her.

‘Um hi’ she replies.

‘How were your holidays?’ Liz asks her then. One of the things I love about Liz is how nice and sweet she is to everyone, even people like Tess that haven’t been so nice to her in the past.

‘Not to good actually’ she replies.

‘What happened?’ I ask her. I know she does it tough at home now that they don’t have money to spare. It’s not like they’re poor but Tess was used to a certain lifestyle for so long and now her Dad cant keep up with it.

‘My mum’s sick’ she tells me then and I can see that she’s upset about it.

I drop Liz’s hand so that I can step forward and give her a hug. ‘I’m sorry. Is she going to be ok?’ I ask.

‘I’m not sure’ she says into my chest.

The bell for first period sounds then so I take a step back and reach out for Liz’s hand but I can’t find it. I turn then and notice she’s taken a step back, obviously still a little uncomfortable with my friendship with Tess and I remind myself to talk to her about it. I reach my hand out to her again and she takes it.

‘Do you want to talk about it?’ I ask Tess then.

‘Um yeah that would be good. Do you think I could catch a ride home this afternoon?’

‘Sure’ I answer without thinking. ‘I’ll see you then’ I say and Liz and I start walking off towards out first class.

‘Max’ she calls after me and I turn to face her ‘can it be just the two of us?’ she asks then and I feel Liz tense up beside me reminding me that I have to give her a little reassurance at lunch time.

I nod my okay and we continue on to class.

Liz

That afternoon Isabel and I get a ride home with Maria. Iz was anything but pleased when she found out that Max was taking Tess 15 minutes across town and that she had to find another way home. Both Maria and Isabel ask me how I feel about Max and Tess and I find myself confiding in them.

‘It’s not that I don’t trust Max because I do its Tess that I don’t trust’ I tell them.

‘Yeah I don’t blame you.’ They tell me.

‘So do the Doctors know what’s wrong?’ I ask Tess as I drive her home that afternoon. She told me her Dad is working the night shift so that he can be home through the day while she is at school to look after her mum.

‘Not really’ she replies with a shrug ‘They don’t talk to me about it very much when I’m around, but I know it must be serious for Dad to stay home through the day with her’

‘Well I hope she feels better’ I tell her as we pull up in her driveway.

‘So you and Liz hey?’ she says then.

‘Yeah’ I smile.

‘Liz is really nice’ she says then.

‘She’s the best’ I reply. I don’t want to have this conversation with Tess it feels totally wrong to tell you the truth.

‘Thanks for the lift Max I really appreciate it. I really need a friend right now’ I feel so bad for her right now. She doesn’t have anyone and I’ve just dumped her as my friend because suddenly I have a girlfriend. I realise then that I have to find the time to still be Tess’s friend and have lunch with her and still maintain my relationship with Liz.

‘I’m your friend Tess’ I tell her ‘how about we have lunch tomorrow?’

‘That would be great’ she smiles.

‘Um Max do you think maybe I could get a lift tomorrow? I mean my Dad used to bring me to and from school and now that’s he not on his way to work I have to catch the bus and it leaves so early and takes so long to get to school’

I feel for her again and I really want to do it but I don’t think that either Isabel or Liz would be happy about leaving 30 minutes early every morning.

She must realise that I’m not to keen about the idea ‘It’s just that I have a project due and I need to get there early so that I can use the library’ she adds then.

‘Um sure’ I tell her then, one morning wont hurt and Iz and Liz will be able to ride with Maria.

‘Ok so I’ll see you in the morning’ she says then as she gets out of the jeep.

‘Yep’ I tell her and offer a small smile. I figure it’s the least I can do to make up for being such a bad friend.

Little did I know at the time that it would be the worst week of my life.

Liz

I didn’t get to see Max last night. By the time he got home from dropping Tess off I was at band practise for Friday night. It’s my 18th birthday so we’re going to play at the party my parents are letting me have. But he left me a message saying he couldn’t give me a ride to school today, which I thought was strange. Luckily my mum lets me take her car but I’m surprised when Isabel is left without a lift as well.

‘Where’s Max?’ I ask her.

‘He didn’t tell you?’ she yells.

‘Uh no I didn’t get to talk to him last night’ I tell her ‘he left me a message’

‘Oh well apparently Tess needed a ride to school as well’ she says sarcastically. ‘So he couldn’t take us to school because he went to pick her up’ she continued

‘Oh’ I reply upset. I thought that I was past this whole thing with Tess but I realise now I’m not. I don’t trust her and I don’t believe for a second that she isn’t doing this to get her paws into my boyfriend. So I make a decision to ask Michael to look into it for me. He likes that sort of stuff and I can trust him to be discreet about it.

I’m pissed now. I can’t believe he ditched us this morning and now it’s lunchtime and he’s not here again. He told Alex he was having lunch with Tess but he would be over to see us, see me but there's no sign of him and i have to get to my next class.

I wish I hadn’t agreed to have lunch with Tess. I miss Liz, I haven’t seen her since yesterday at lunchtime and that’s the longest we’ve been apart in three weeks’

‘So what are you doing this weekend?’ Tess asks me.

‘Um’ I wrack my brain for what I’m doing. I know it’s something important but for the life of me I cant think what it is.

‘Well do you want to catch a movie on Friday night? I haven’t been in ages and I just want to get out of the house’

‘Oh ok’ I tell her. It sounds innocent enough and I’m sure I can convince Liz to come with me. She continues to talk about lots of different things whilst I watch the clock. I really want to go see Liz.

‘Listen Tess I’ve gotta go’ I tell her but just as I’m about to pack up the bells rings and I sigh because I realise there is no way I’m going to get to see Liz now. We don’t have a single class together on Tuesday’s.

By the time I make it the car park that afternoon everyone is gone. I got caught up with Tess, I think she was hoping I would offer her a lift home and I realise that once again I’ve missed Liz.

I jump in the jeep and drive home as quickly as possible hoping that I will be able to catch her before band practise. But as I pull up in the driveway I see the jetta speeding away and I realise that I’ll have to wait till she gets home.

At 10 o’clock that night I’m still waiting. I’ve called her cell but it’s off and Isabel won’t talk to me for some reason. In the end I give up hoping that I’ll get to talk to her in the morning.

Liz

No messages or anything. I got home late so I didn’t get to talk to him but he didn’t even leave me a message. God what is going on? is he going to take me to school this morning? My question is answered though when I walk outside and find him waiting for me near the jeep.

‘Hey’ he smiles and pulls me into his arms. I’m still angry with him so I stay stiff.

‘Hi’ I reply and then walk around to hop in the jeep.

I can tell he’s hurt by my reaction because he’s about to say something until Isabel jumps in the back.

‘Let’s go’ she tells us as we drive silently to school, the only conversation during out drive to school is Isabel and I occasionally.

When we get there I let Max help me out of the jeep and take my hand because I realise I’m overreacting. He loves me and he’s with me. So what if I haven’t seen him for a few days because he was spending time with Tess?

Just before we enter the school he stops pulls me to him and I let him give me a sweet kiss on the lips. God I’ve missed this, I’ve haven’t tasted him since Monday lunch time and I’m going through withdrawals. I move to deepen the kiss when I hear something next to me.

‘I told you it was just a rumour. He’s with Liz not Tess’ says someone. I pull back and turn to look at them and then back at Max. His expression show’s nothing and I realise he probably didn’t even hear it.

We continue walking until we get to my locker. We grab both of our stuff and he walks me to class.

‘So I’ll see you at lunch today?’ I ask him hesitantly. I don’t think I could take it if he tells me no.

‘Sure will. I’ve missed you way to much to skip out on my Liz time today’ he replies with a grin and I sigh in relief.

‘See you then’ I tell him before leaning up to give him a kiss and then turn to enter my first period. I feel like everyone is staring and whispering at me, but maybe I’m just being paranoid because of that comment I thought I heard earlier this morning.

It’s in my 4th period of the day though when Pam Troy approaches me and I finally find out what everyone is talking about.

Yeah the rumour mill loved our little show in the eraser room on Monday but apparently they love the little rumour Tess is spreading better.

‘Hi Liz’ Pam greets

‘Hi Pam’ I reply. Don’t get me wrong Pam is nice enough, she was never a bitch like Tess and she respects me because she realises that people like me but we’re hardly friends.

‘Listen I thought I should tell you what everyone is saying’

‘Oh ok what?’ I ask her.

‘Well they’re all saying that Max dumped you to go out with Tess’ she tells me.

‘So what he has lunch with a friend and gives her ride home and suddenly there an item?’ I ask irritated.

‘Well no I heard they have a date on Friday night’

‘Well that’s just stupid.’ I tell her stubbornly. I mean it’s my birthday, and my party.

‘Yeah I had a feeling Tess just did it to upset you Liz but you should talk to Max about it’ she tells me.

‘Thanks Pam’ I say before turning back to my class.

When I reach the table at lunchtime everyone is there and Liz is talking quietly with Michael, whispering about something.

‘Hey’ I say as I take a seat next to her.

I feel like there are a million eyes on me at the moment.

‘Hey’ she turns and smiles at me. ‘After you eat can I talk to you privately?’

I flash her a grin because that’s exactly what I had in mind too it just didn’t involve talking. ‘Sure’

After we both finish we head to the eraser room but when we get there it’s locked so instead we head to the library.

‘Not what I had in mind’ I sigh when I pull her against me.

‘Yeah I know. Listen I wanted to talk to you about Tess’ she tells me.

‘Ok’ I smile. I’m glad that we’re talking about things I could tell she was upset with me this morning.

‘There’s a rumour going around that you dumped me for Tess’ she tells me and I’m shocked it must show on my face too.

‘Yeah I know’ she smiles ‘I told Pam it was ridiculous that just because you had lunch with her and gave her a lift doesn’t mean that we’ve broken up but she said Tess told a few people that she had a date with you on Friday night’

‘Oh’ I reply scratching my ear. Now I understand where the misunderstanding could be.

‘Obviously it’s not a date. We were just going to go to the movies as friends I was going to see if you wanted to come along actually’ I tell her.

‘You made plans with her for Friday night?’ she asks me then but now she’s not nervous she’s clearly upset with me.

‘Yeah I reply. She wanted to get out of the house so I thought what the hell, you, me, her and a movie couldn’t be too bad. I know the two of you aren’t friends’ I explain but Liz doesn’t let me finish before she stands up and starts to run away.

‘Liz’ I call after her and begin following her.

‘You bastard’ she whispers when I finally reach her and pull her around to face me.

‘What’s wrong? What did I do?’ I ask desperately. I’m totally confused at why she is so upset. It’s not like it was a date I never intended on going without her.

‘If you don’t know then I’m not sure whether this thing between us is going to work’ she cries and before I can stop her she’s run off again.

Liz

I hide in the ladies toilets until I can pull myself together and then I beg Maria to take me home in her free period that afternoon. I don’t tell her what happened between Max and I because I’m too humiliated and hurt and I don’t think I could get through the story without breaking down.

My parents aren’t home so I go straight too my room where I throw myself on the bed and finally give in to my misery. This is the second time in the past months that I’ve cried over Max Evan’s and I’m not sure I want to do it again.

Max

I looked around for Liz everywhere this afternoon but it was like she disappeared off the face off the earth. When I reached the car park it was only Isabel waiting for me and she mentioned that she saw Liz and Maria leaving early.

When I got home I wanted to go straight over to her house and try to talk to her about what was wrong but I decided to give her some space and let her come to me when she gets over whatever it is that has upset her.

It’s when I enter my room that I realise that things are a lot worse then I thought because when I look over to her window the blinds are shut. For the first time since I can ever remember Liz has locked me out of her world and I feel absolutely lost.

The next day things don’t get any better. Liz rides to school with Maria and does everything possible to avoid me during school. She won’t return my phone calls and she doesn’t have lunch with the rest of the group. They all seem oblivious to what’s going on though they obviously have reason to believe that Liz is busy doing something. I don’t understand why she’s behaving this way though; I never knew Liz could be such a spoilt brat. Of course the rumour mill is speculating again too, which isn’t helping the situation.

Liz

Its Friday morning, my birthday. I’m having a nice breakfast with my mum and dad since it will be the only family moment we get today considering we’re having the party tonight. They are letting me have half the day off so that Maria, Alex and I can get the party organised though.

I have almost 20 messages on my phone from Max now and not one of them does he apologise for forgetting my birthday and making plans to spend the night with another girl. The last message he told me I was behaving like a spoilt brat. Unbelievable, maybe I am overreacting but at least I remembered his birthday, in fact he got luckier then he ever had in his life and what does he do when it’s my birthday, agrees to take out that skank Tess Harding. I’m not just upset anymore I’m pissed as hell.

Luckily for me though I got my present from my parents this morning, a brand new black Mazda 3 so I don’t have to worry about getting to school anymore.

I give Isabel a call and ask her if she wants to ride with me to school, she seemed a bit confused which I’m not surprised considering I haven’t told anyone other than Michael what’s going on with Max and I.

‘Happy Birthday Lizzie’ she smiles then and comes to give me a hug. We’re just about to pull out of the drive way and a van pulls up and a delivery guy gets out with a bunch of white roses. My favourite.

‘Delivery for Liz Parker’ he says.

‘That’s me’ I smile before sighing for the flowers. Isabel holds them whilst I read the card.

‘Oh’ I sigh as I take another smell of the glorious arrangement, I know they must have cost him a fortune but what I’m most happy about at the moment is that my boyfriend didn’t forget my birthday after all.

Once we reach the school I take off towards Max’s locker hoping to find him there and just as I thought there he is, the only problem is Tess is also there. I decide to totally ignore her though and instead go ahead with the Thank you I decided on for my boyfriend.

‘Max’ I call out as I walk over to him and when he turns around I launch myself into his arms and take his mouth in a passionate kiss. He doesn’t resist instead he pulls my body against his tightly and returns my kiss with as much passion.

‘Wow’ he says when we finally pull back for air.

Tess is still standing next to us and she doesn’t look happy, I cant help smirk at her. She might have thought her plan was working but she’s wrong.

‘Thank you’ I tell him then.

‘Your welcome’ he smiles in return ‘but what are you thanking me for’ he whispers.

I pull back to look at him and that’s when I realise he has no idea what I’m talking about. ‘You know for my flowers’ I tell him as I take a step back. By this stage Tess has stalked off somewhere thankfully.

‘Um I’m confused, what flowers Liz?’ he asks as he scratches his eyebrow. Normally I would find that totally adorable and would end up dragging him to the eraser room to have my way with him but tears are forming in my eyes instead.

‘Oh don’t worry about it, it must have been someone’s idea of a joke’ I reply taking a few more steps backwards and away from him.

‘Hey chica there you are’ Maria rushes up before I can make my get away.

‘There’s the birthday girl’ Alex grins as he follows her.

I try to suck up the tears until I hear Max gasp at Alex’s comment I just can’t shake the thought that he really forgot my birthday.

‘Hey guys’ I reply but the tears are falling now and I cant stop them.

‘What’s wrong?’ Maria asks then casting a glance at me then to Max and back to me again.

‘Nothing. I’ve gotta go’ she tells them before stalking off towards the entrance.

‘Liz’ I call out after her and move to run after her but I’m stopped by someone’s hand on my arm, I turn around and find Tess smiling at me.

‘Max what time are you picking me up for the movies tonight?’ she asks.

I hear both Maria and Alex gasp at the comment both turning to glare at me but at the same time begging me to tell them it’s not true and in a classic Max Evan’s moment I just stand there with my hands in my pocket staring at my feet like they’re the most interesting thing in the world.
