Chapter 4:
A Few Days Later

Tossing and turning in the late hours of the night, Liz sighed in her sleep. Contentment falling over her as she dreamed: Liz stood in her old bedroom watching herself through the mirror. She was dressed in a beautiful wedding gown. It was as if she were watching a movie and she couldn’t control the events that were taking place or her emotions. She was happy, excited, and nervous as she had never been before. Fingering the straps on her shoulders, Liz examined the gown. It was an exquisite white satin embossed with lace. The top was fitted…as the bottom flared out before her. It was if the gown were made just for her.

Looking up to meet her eyes in the mirror, Liz felt herself smile before whispering to herself that this was it. She felt magnificent…beautiful. Her dark hair was pulled back while falling softly down her shoulders. Two pieces were fastened into a lace and pearl comb, which was then attached to a veil. Her face looked soft, stress free, and her eyes were glowing with happiness. At that moment the door opened to reveal a grinning Maria in a lilac spaghetti-strapped bridesmaid’s gown. “It’s time, Chica. How do you feel?” Liz shook her head for a moment, speechless, before saying.

“I guess I had finally given up hope that this would ever happen…and now it’s happening! I’m finally marrying Max Evans!” Liz smiled turning to meet Maria’s eyes with tears. “I’m so happy…yet so afraid!” She whispered with a small chuckle of delight and fear. “As the bride’s maid and best friend…I should say that there is nothing to fear but then I would be lying to you. There is everything to fear in love…especially when you’re in-love. You just have to take that leap and hope that someone will catch you…and I have no doubt anymore that Max will.” Maria stated with a clear certainty in her eyes as she held Liz’s hands. “Max loves you and you will never love anyone the way you love Max…So basically what I’m trying to say is that you’re doing the right thing…you’re following your heart!”

Moments later, she was walking down the steps, into the break room, as Maria held her train. The room was empty except for Sheriff Valenti…as everyone stood in the Crash Down waiting. Taking a deep breath, Liz met the Sheriff’s smile with a smile of her own. “Okay babe, gotta go make an appearance before Max has a complete nervous breakdown!” Maria laughed, while giving Liz a little hug. Nodding in answer, she watched Maria step out into the ceremony. “Thank you, Sheriff!” She whispered, looking straight ahead. “No…thank you, Liz, for giving me this honor!” Jim Valenti smiled, tears filling his eyes.

‘I Shall Believe’ came on at that moment…signaling the bride’s turn to walk down the aisle. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, Liz took the first step into a new future. As she walked, she briefly met the eyes of those she loved…before meeting Max’s. Tears leaked from the corners of his eyes as he watched her walk towards him. He wore a black tux that accentuated his broad shoulders and tall form. His hair was cut short…making him look more masculine than usual. But his hazel-brown eyes remained the same…filled with love and happiness.

********

Liz moaned in her sleep as her dreamed changed to that of a hotel room…a luxurious hotel room. She lay in the king size bed waiting for him. The room was dark… illuminated with scented candles. Liz’s breath caught as the bathroom door opened and her husband stepped into the room in nothing but a towel. Under the silk sheets, Liz lay bare…her lingerie scattered on the floor. Her heart accelerated as their gazes met across the distance. The temperature in the room rose as he took the necessary steps towards the bed...towards her. His hard muscles gleamed in the candle light making Liz shiver and squirm in anticipation.

Kneeling on the bed as he stood in front of her, Liz stroked his abdomen, chest, and shoulders…delighting in his short, choppy gasps. “Liz…” “Touch me, Max!” She whispered applying her mouth to where her hands had been. He was so hard, she thought, so hot. Moaning in pleasure, he obeyed. His large hands…gentle yet filled with fever roamed her body. Licking his Adam’s apple, Liz sighed…running her hands over his smooth broad shoulders. Max shuddered at Liz’s boldness before taking her mouth. The kiss was long, sweet, and erotic.... as they stroked each other into a heated passion.

Breaking the kiss, she stroked her hands down to the towel hanging from Max’s hips. Liz met his eyes then as she loosened the towel and let it go. It felt like their first time all over again…the only difference being that this time they were together. Max’s eyes were dazed with pleasure and desire, his mouth swollen from their heated kisses. Liz swallowed as she stared into his eyes as she hesitantly took his hard jutting penis into her palm. It jumped…he jumped…as she touched him…stroked him. He was so big…larger than before. Liz wondered for a brief second about how he was going to fit…until she met his heated gaze once again.

Stroking him…squeezing him…memorizing him, she grew extremely hot. She ached with the intense need to have him inside of her. “Liz-Liz….Oh god!” Max gasped out, in pain and pleasure. “I need you, Max!” Liz breathed, watching as he grew harder… as the head of his penis was laced with pronounced bluish veins in his need for her. Nodding, he replied gruffly. “I need you too!” Lying back on the bed, Liz watched as Max mounted her, opening her legs wide for his large body. She felt as if she were about to implode at the anticipation. Holding himself over her by the strength of his arms, he kissed her with tenderness. Wrapping his tongue around hers in love play, Max’s turgid shaft met her entrance in permission. Wrapping her arms around his neck, Liz wiggled in answer

Looking deeply into each others’ eyes, they shared a deep breath as Max thrust slowly into her tight wet passage way. She laid there as pain warred with pleasure, but in the end pleasure won out as Max started to move. It was like their first time…but more intense. Thrusting slowly into her, Max sucked in a breath as Liz tightened her muscles around him. Moments passed as he thrust slowly into her but after a while they needed more. Sitting up while breathing erratically, Max held Liz’s legs open for more access. She cried out at the new position, in a fever, as he moved quicker…pumping into her. “Oh yes! Right there!” Liz cried, on the verge of climaxing.

Gritting his teeth, he held her by the cleft of her bottom as his thrusts grew frenzied. “Oh god, Liz! You feel so…!” Max grunted out, unable to finish as she started pulsing around him…grabbing him…caressing him in the mist of her climax. Arching, Liz cried out Max’s name…shuddering at the intensity of their lovemaking. Growing harder inside of her, she watched as he trembled and groaned at the force of his climax taking him over before collapsing onto of her. There bodies slick were with perspiration as they lay together.

***********

Liz awakened, gasping, with tears in her eyes as she still felt the after shocks of her climax run through her. Glancing around, she realized that she was back in her bedroom, her bed was empty except for her, it was 4 am in the morning, and she needed a cold shower. Slowly pushing back her tangled sheets, Liz climbed from the bed. Breathing in a deep breath, she made her way into the bathroom. That dream had been plaguing her for the past three nights. Her brain was jumbled with confusion as she thought about it. Was it just a dream or premonition?

Stepping into the cold spray, Liz stood there for what felt like an eternity…until she started trembling. After quickly cleaning herself up, she stepped from the shower with a clearer mind. It was premonition, she realized. Liz remembered stepping into the Crash Down…walking down the aisle…meeting Amelia, Alex, and even Zan’s gaze. Shaking her wet hair in dismay, Liz dried herself. That couldn’t be possible Zan didn’t even like her…so how could it be possible that she married Max and he was okay with it?

Quickly drying herself and stepping into clean clothes, she checked on Amelia and Alex before making her way to into her bedroom. She had seen or talked to Max since Annabelle’s birthday party where they had dance. Liz had tried to avoid him after that dance as much as possible. Coming into work early, avoiding her classroom until the very second the bell rang… She knew that she was running…that she was being a coward in refusing to face him. But she couldn’t help it…what they had scared her…what they could have terrified her.

Being held in his arms that day…smelling his scent that could only be his…made her yearn for him all over again. These past few days her mind, if not busy, was filled with Max. Just as Liz had been terrified of the day she had known she would lose Alex…she was petrified of the day that she would let Max in again. And it would happen because her premonitions never lied. Snuggling into bed, she glanced over to other side of her queen sized bed. It was empty…just as she felt at that moment as she stared into empty space.

The words Maria had uttered to her…haunted her. I’m afraid Chica that you will never find someone who loves you the way Max loves you. And that you will never love anyone the way you love Max. To state it simply Girlfriend… I’m afraid that you’ll end up alone. She was afraid as well…once she admitted it but she more afraid of what could happen if Max ever hurt her again. Liz had survived once without him…she didn’t think that she could survive again. Too many blows had been taken to her heart…to ever trust Max the same way again.

Liz knew that she was as much to blame as he was for their problems and that’s why, she realized, she owed him at least a chance. Picking up the cordless and dialing his number before changing her mind…she waited as the other line rang. Two rings later, a gruff voiced answered. “Hello?” “Hey Max, were you asleep?” “Liz?” Max asked, his voice filled with puzzlement and alarm. “Yeah…” “Is everything okay?” “Yeah umm I was just wondering if you still wanted to go to the movies this weekend?” There was a brief pause. “You wondering about this 4:30 in the morning?” Liz froze in embarrassment at his question.

“Umm yeah…I’m sorry. I know woke you…umm just forget about this whole conversation! Bye Max.” Moving to hang up the phone, Liz heard Max’s panicked filled voice calling out her name. Giving a brief pause, Liz pulled the phone back to ear…swallowing hard. “Yeah, Max?” “Do you really want to go to the movies this weekend? With me?” Looking towards the empty spot next to her, Liz answered. “Yes. I do!” “And dinner too?” “You’re pushing your luck Max…let’s just take this slow okay?” “Okay!” “Night, Max.” “Night, Liz.”

Hanging up his beside phone, Max lay on his back…folding his arms underneath his head. Baby steps he thought at the thought of Liz agreeing to going out with him. They were taking baby steps and for that Max was half grateful. At least they were making some progress. Every since that day they had danced…Liz had avoided him. Max knew that he deserved it but it still hurt nevertheless. It had shocked him upon recognition to hear that the very woman that had avoided him would call him 4:30 in the morning. Not that Max was complaining, he was just momentarily shocked and pleased at the turn of events. She was finally giving him a chance.

Max knew that Zan was not pleased at the idea of he and Liz together and he even understand why. But what Max would not do was sacrifice one love for another. He had made that mistake once before and was still paying for it. Max would not do it again, that’s another reason he had agreed to going slow with Liz. Zan needed to adjust to the fact that if Max had any say in the events that took place…he and Liz would be together. He knew he sounded cocky to the extreme but Max had faith in what he and Liz had shared so long ago…and still shared now. They had the kind of love that you only experienced once in a life time…something he had never had with Tess or with anyone else for that matter.

He had loved Tess…but just as he loved Maria. Guiltily he admitted that in all this he had led her on…used her as a safety net. So that he could never hurt again…could never be disappointed again…could never feel the pain again that he had felt at losing Liz. Sighing, he realized that that was another mark against his soul. Shame filled him at his methods at dealing with everything. He needed Liz…he was nothing without her. Thinking about the night where he could finally spend sometime with her, Max waited in anticipation. Staring determinedly up at his ceiling, he thought about Liz and why she suddenly changed her mind.

The Next Part

The next morning, Liz lay looking up at Ava’s ceiling as Ava herself got ready for work. “I can’t believe I said yes…I can’t believe I called him 4:30 in the morning…to say yes. God what is wrong with me?” She cried out, throwing her hands up into the air, before turning to Ava for an answer. “Hey, I’m still stuck on the fact that you called him. I thought you just wanted to be friends…what changed your mind?” Liz sighed, before turning to look up at the ceiling again. “I don’t know. It was that dream…I guess that finally did it…and maybe the fear that Maria would turn out to be right. I just want to know where all of this is leading.”

Standing in her uniform, Ava sat down beside Liz on the bed. “Is that what was bothering you last night…wait what dream?” Liz froze, staring up at the ceiling. “Did I say dream? Oh it was nothing really.” She replied, trying to wave away the subject. “Liz?” “Okay-okay, I’ve been having this same dream every since the picnic.” Liz sighed, before continuing. “I dreamed that Max and I got married in the Crash Down…I-I dreamt of our honeymoon too!” Ava just stared at Liz before breaking out in a full fledged grin. “You naughty-naughty girl. You’ve had this dream for a week and you didn’t tell me? I want details…of the wedding and honeymoon. I’ve always been a sucka for romance.” Letting out a short giggle, Liz rolled her eyes.

“Aren’t you going to be late?” “That long huh? Damn, I guess I’ll be in suspense until tonight.” Ava pouted. Sitting up, Liz pushed a lock of hair behind her ear. “That’s not all…I think it was a premonition. It seemed so… real.” “But you haven’t had a premonition in years?” “I know…I just hate doubting myself. What if it is just a dream? I should feel relieved if it is right? But I don’t. I was terrified in the dream and yet happy…so happy…an emotion I haven’t really felt in a very long time…as if I were finally coming home! I shouldn’t feel this way. I feel as if I’m just setting myself up all over again to get hurt but yet I’m willing to take that risk…if only for this weekend. It’s like a double edged sword, you know? Both ends are sharp and painful yet I have no choice but to pick one of them.”

“I wish I could say something profound to make things easier for ya but I can’t. You just need to follow your heart…who knows? Maybe in the end it’ll lead you and Maxie-Poo down the aisle like you dreamed.” “Maybe…maybe not.” Liz muttered, lost in her thoughts. What would it be like to be married to Max? Liz thought. Heaven on earth…she had no doubt about that. But what about when times got rough? Would they make it as a couple…as a family? Would Zan accept her? Would Alex accept Max? Would things ever be normal again? These questions plagued her mind as she went about the rest of her day. Deep inside, she was excited about this weekend…about finally doing something as simple as seeing a movie. Despite her fears and resistance, Liz wanted to get to know the man who was still a stranger to her, despite their history. Liz guessed that deep down beneath the pain and fear was a desire to know Max again…to know what made him tick.

Late that night, Liz sat grading quizzes when the cordless rang, interrupting her thoughts. Grumbling, she picked up the phone. “Hello.” “Hey…it’s Max.” Liz sat up straighter at the deep voice on the other end. “Hey Max…what’s up?” “I just thought we could talk…are you busy?” “No not at all…just grading papers.” “How are Amelia and Alex?” “They’re good…they missed your phone call tonight.” “I know I’m sorry. I had a case in Carlsbad and I just got in.” “Wow this late?” Liz asked looking over to the clock on the microwave that read 1:30am. “Yeah, there was an accident on 285 S. and they had the road blocked for about an hour.” Max explained, while undressing. “You sound tired?”

He gave a little snort of laughter. “I am.” “Do you want to talk about it?” Liz asked, concern feeling her voice. “It’s just been a long day that’s all. I hope your day wasn’t as tiring as mine?” She let out a short laugh at that question. “My days are always tiring Max. I have 28-30 students a class and 6 classes a day…not to mention Alex and Amelia when I get home.” “So why aren’t you in bed, Liz, getting some rest?” Max asked in concern, while lying back against his pillows. “Because my day never ends…there are chores that haven’t been finished and papers I still need to grade.” There was a brief moment of silence before Max said, “I’m proud of you, Liz. I know I’ve never said that before but I am!” She smiled sadly into the phone. “Thanks Max…that means a lot to me.” “No thank you, Liz, for everything.”

A few moments of silence went past before Max spoke again. “I had a background check done on Serena.” Liz froze, her pen in the mist of grading another worksheet. “Really? What did you come up with?” “She’s from LA…no family…no friends… her last known address is a property owned by a guy named Kal Langely…and on Cherelyn’s birth certificate… there is no name of the father.” Digesting the information given, Liz frowned. “Sean isn’t Cherelyn’s biological father or he would be on the birth certificate, right? Was that all the information you could get?’ “As of right now…yeah. But I’ll look more into it.” “Alright.” Liz said before letting a yawn slip from her lips. Max grinned on the other end “Get some rest, Liz.”

“I’ll try but not right now. How’s Zan?” Max grew sober at the question. “He’s okay…slowly coming around. Every week, I take him to visit Tess…It seems as if every visit opens him up more.” Liz sighed in relief and weariness. “He’s healing, Max. I’ve noticed that he’s been smiling and laughing more too…He even talks to me sometimes and that’s a surprise because I’ve came to the conclusion that he hates me.” Max winced as he digested what she just said. “He doesn’t hate you, Liz…he just doesn’t know you!” Liz doubted the former and agreed with the latter. “How does he feel about us going out this weekend?” He sighed somberly, pushing a hand though his dark hair in stress. “He-he’s not happy about it…but he’ll be okay once time pasts and he gets to know you.”

“I don’t know, Max. I don’t know if this us such a great idea…us going out on a date!” Liz sighed. “I thought we were just going as friends…do you want this to be a date, Liz?” She froze, realizing her mistake in acknowledging that it was a date. “No…Yes… I don’t know, Max! If we tried this…a relationship…we wouldn’t be taking a risk in just hurting ourselves…but in hurting our kids as well. I couldn’t do that to them. I mean Amelia’s fine with the thought of us being together but Alex and Zan are not! Alex…despite being the youngest… has always been protective of Amelia and me. He loves that you’re around…but I know Alex. He’s terrified at the thought of us together and so am I.”

There was dead silence until Max spoke again. “I understand and you don’t know how sorry I am for the pain that I have caused but despite everything you’ve said…I still need you…want you and not in a friendship capacity…if it’s time you need than your wish is granted Liz… We’ll take it slow…just give me a chance to make things right again! Please Liz!” Remembering her wedding day, she swallowed her doubts and fears before making her decision. “Okay… I love you, Max, please don’t ever doubt that…I just can’t take getting hurt again!” She whispered, closing her eyes. “I love you too Liz. Thank you. Are we still on for Saturday?” Max replied his voice gruff with emotion and hope. Liz smiled, anxiety and excitement flowing through her veins.

A few moments later after having said goodnight to Liz, Max went to make sure that the all the doors were locked and that Zan was okay. As he stood outside of his son’s door, Max found that the light under the door was on. Opening the door slowly, he found Zan standing behind his telescope…looking out into the night’s starry sky. “It’s late Zan…what are you still doing up?” Zan turned around at his father’s entrance. “I couldn’t sleep…were you talking to Liz again?” “Yes… come and have a seat.” Max suggested, sitting down on the twin size bed. “Okay…” Zan obeyed, hopping up beside his dad. “How do you feel about Liz and I going out this weekend?” Shrugging, Zan looked everywhere else accept at Max. “I don’t know…I don’t want you to go!”

“Why? Is it because you don’t like Liz?” “No…Yes, I just don’t want …” “Liz to replace your mom?” Max finished as he stared down at Zan inquiringly. “Yeah…you’re gonna forget about her and me…if you out with Liz you’re gonna fall in-love and… forget all about me!” He whispered with sadness and fear. “You’re wrong Zan. I will never forget about you or your mom. She was my wife and you’re my son, Zan…and I am already in love with Liz. We were together when I was sixteen before your mom came to Roswell. But we hurt each other pretty badly and she left Roswell before you were born. I loved your mother but I was…I am in love with Liz. There are many different kinds of love and none them can be changed…you’ll find that out someday when you get older. I love you, Zan, and because of that I could never forget you. But I also love Liz and that I cannot change.”

Zan continued to stare down at the floor as he tried to digest his father’s words. Despite the fact that he felt like crying, Zan understood and trusted his dad’s words. “I know you don’t want to hear this…but Liz is a good person and…she cares about you…so maybe you could at least try to be nice to her?” Zan looked about finally meeting his father’s hazel brown eyes that held so much hope, before sighing. “I guess so…Are you really going to the movies this weekend?” Zan asked, hoping against hope that the answer was ‘no’. “Yes.” Max replied firmly, meeting his son’s gaze. Sighing, Zan looked down at his feet. “I’m tired now...will you stay with me for a little while?” Max smiled before answering, “Yes…hop into bed… I’m not going anywhere.”

A few days later, Zan stood before his mother’s gravesite. It was 6:00 in the evening and the sun was setting. His dad was working over time and his Aunt Maria had been watching him. She didn’t know he was gone…at least he didn’t think so. The house was in total chaos…Mikhail was screaming, Annabelle and Alexa were fighting, Uncle Michael was snoring loudly, and Aunt Maria was screaming her head off trying to get Mikhail to sleep. It wasn’t too hard to escape the house…all he had to do was walk out of the front door. Zan had felt an immediate desire to talk to his mom today. He had missed her lately especially since his dad had started getting closer to Liz Parker. He just wished things went back to the way they were. He told his mom just that as he stood at her grave.

The wind blew softly as Zan quietly talked to his mom about everything that was happening. He suddenly heard footsteps coming from afar. Slowly he turned around to see Liz Parker walking towards him. She was wearing dark blue jeans and a sleeveless yellow tank top. Her hair was neatly combed back into clip and she had a sad smile gracing her lips. Zan watched her with a vivid curiosity and annoyance. What was she doing here? Did she come here just annoy him and interrupt his time with his mom? Putting on his best glare, he watched her as she came closer. “What are you doing here?” He demanded clenching his jaw. Liz just stood watching his sadly before answering him honestly. “Just visiting my dad and a friend. I just thought I’d come over and say hi… see if you were okay.”

“Oh…I’m fine… so you can just leave me alone now!” Zan glared before turning back to look down at his mom’s grave. Liz nodded in answer before moving to walk away. “See you in school, Zan.” Zan turned to watch her leave, her shoulders slumped in weariness. “Wait…how-how did your dad die?” She froze at his question before turning around to face him. “He had a heart attack.” “Do you miss him?” Liz thought about it before whispering. “Everyday!” “I miss my mom everyday too! Were you and my mom friends?” “Not really…we loved the same man…I wish things could’ve been different though!” Zan nodded staring at her intently. “How did your friend die?”

Liz sighed smiling sadly as she met the curious green eyes of the boy. “He died in an accident a long time ago.” “Oh… what was his name?” “Alex.” His eyes widened at her answer. “You knew Uncle Alex?” Liz nodded. “Yup…he was my best friend!” “My mom and dad named me after him but my nickname is Zan. That’s what my dad’s name use to be before he came to Earth.” “I know.” She answered with a small smile. “My mom’s name use to be Ava. Did you know that? I bet you didn’t. You’re just a stupid human.” Zan asked, his green eyes flashing with temper. Liz, despite being affected by his words, smiled. “Actually I’m just like you. I’m not human.” Zan’s eyes squinted as if trying to see if she was lying. “Your lying…my mom said that there was only four pods.”

She shrugged before explaining, “I was sent down in a separate ship. I can manipulate molecular structures just like you…I can connect with people and I can even see the future from time to time.” Zan glared becoming angrier by the second. He hated being lied to. “Prove it!” “Okay…” Looking around to see if anyone was looking, Liz touched her hair focusing her powers on making it bright red. Zan let out a gasp barely audible in the light breeze but Liz heard it and smiled inside before changing it back to dark chocolate. “Do something else.” Liz breathed in sigh, praying for patience. “Okay. Let’s see.” Moving over to a random grave stone with fresh red roses lying on it, Liz picked them up. Smiling, she turned the roses white. “Wow…hey I didn’t know you were a hybrid. So did you have a past life too?” “Yeah” “What was your name?” “Latanya.” Liz answered somberly, hugging herself against a sudden chill.

“Were you a servant or something?” Liz laughed softly rolling her eyes towards the sky. “No. I was a Princess.” Zan frowned before replying, “That’s hard to believe. You don’t look like a Princess…but more like a servant girl to me. Did you know my mom and dad?” “I didn’t really know your mom that well but your dad and I were friends.” Liz smiled, guilt riding her hard at having lied to Zan. She just couldn’t bare to hurt him even if he was a brat. He had lost his mother and he had already felt threatened by Liz…so hearing the news that his mother had been a traitor and that Max had happily married Liz in their past life would’ve been like pouring acid into his wounds slowly.

So she tried to tell him as much as the truth as possible without telling him everything. At that moment both Liz and Zan heard someone shouting his name from a distance. Seconds later a furious Michael came into view. “Dammit Zan…hey Liz.” Michael greeted briefly before meeting Zan’s guilt ridden eyes again. “How many times have we told you not to just leave without at least telling us where you are going first? It’s not safe, Zan, you know that…too many things have just happened to just walk around town without an adult to protect you!” Zan had to keep from laughing…Uncle Michael sounded so much like Aunt Maria when she was in one of her rants.

“But Liz was with me.” He replied innocently blinking up at Michael. “Hey don’t even try to play that innocent card on me...I’m not Maxwell. You walked here alone and you were planning on walking back alone as well but the question I have for you is…what exactly were you going to say to Maria when you walked through the front door?” Becoming nervous while looking everywhere but at Michael…Zan shrugged. “I don’t know!” “Well you had better figure it out on the walk home because Maria is waiting.” Zan groaned in despair, “Awww no.” “Say goodbye Zan.” “Bye Liz.” Zan muttered before stomping away. “Bye Liz.” Michael smiled sadly before walking in the direction where Zan was headed. “Bye Michael…tell Maria to call me.” “Okay be safe Liz.” “I’ll try.” She replied before making her way back to the car to continue her day with Alex and Amelia.

Chapter 5

Saturday evening, Liz stood nervously in front of her bedroom mirror. Max would be there any moment and she still couldn’t find anything to wear, which was ridiculous because they were just going to the movies. Looking at her reflection, Liz groaned. She wore a light pink halter top and black stretch denim jeans. Deep down inside, she wanted to look beautiful tonight. At that moment, Ava chose to poke her head through the door. “Hey, I’m headin’ out to the store. You need anything?” Liz shook head. “No thank you. Wait…how do I look?” Ava stepped into the room then, tilting her head to the side in thought. “Terrible!” Liz eye brows rose in worry and her cheeks tinted in embarrassment. “Really?” “I’m just jokin’, yo. You look fine. Just add on a bit of eyeliner and lip gloss and you’re done.” Ava laughed while shaking her head, making her pony-tail swing.

“Are you sure?” Liz asked with doubt as she looked into the mirror once again. “Yes, you look fine. You just have a little brown stain in your top though.” Panicked, Liz searched her top. “Where-where? Oh god he’ll be here any second.” “Kiddin’, Liz. Stop trippin’ yo. You look great.” Ava laughed once again. “Okay.” Liz nodded nervously, while smoothing a palm down her stomach. Picking up her eyeliner, she leaned closer into the mirror. “Kyle called by the way…four times.” Liz stated as she meticulously put on her make up. “Oh yeah?” Ava asked moodily. “Is everything okay?” She asked in concern. “Yes…no. I don’t know. I’m trying to give him space…like you said you know to heal. I hate the fact that every time he looks at me he sees Tess. I don’t want to be in competition for Kyle’s attention with a dead woman and…I told him that when I called a halt.”

“You called a halt? When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me?” Liz asked stunned. “It happened last weekend.” Ava sighed, looking every where else but at Liz. “Why didn’t you tell me?” She repeated walking across the room to stand in front of her best-friend. “I don’t know…you were going through your thing with Max and I didn’t want to bother you.” “You’re kidding, right? You should’ve told me, Ava. I’ve had your shoulder to cry on for more than eight years and now it’s your turn to let me help you…to let me be your shoulder to cry on. Despite everything that Max and I go through, I will always be here for you! Now that I’ve said that…you have to promise me that if you ever need a shoulder to cry on that you will not hesitate in coming to me” Liz asked angrily, looking Ava straight in the eyes.

Warmth filled Ava at realizing once again that someone actually cared about her. That she actually had a family…that cared not only about her welfare but for her feelings. No one had ever cared for her the way Liz and the kids did…not even her own so called family. “Promise, Ava!” Ava smiled, trying to hold back tears, before leaning in to give Liz a hug. “I promise, Cornball!” Liz smiled in satisfaction before replying, “Good!” “I’m gonna head out now…do you need anything?” “No…better yet a carton of Ben & Jerry’s… just in case this night doesn’t go so well.” Liz muttered, nervously combing her hair. “Have faith Cornball…if Maxie-Poo is anything like Zan…he won’t make the same mistakes twice.” Meeting Ava eyes through the mirror, she smiled sadly before whispering. “Let’s hope not!”

***************

Ten minutes later, Max stood nervously on the porch, his fist frozen before the door. Earlier, he had stood in this exact same spot as he had picked up the kids…the only difference being that Liz hadn’t been there. What if he did something wrong? Said something? It felt as if he were walking across a tight rope and any move that he made could decide his fate. Max could either fall by hurting her again or gain his balance by being with her again. He would rather avoid the former and gain the latter, he thought to himself. Gaining the courage that had deserted him upon stepping upon the porch, Max knocked firmly on the door.

Moments later, instead of a petite brunette coming to the door, to his disappointment Ava answered the door. “Yo Cornball, Maxis-Poo is here.” Ava called, her New York accent becoming even more pronounced for Max’s benefit. She knew Max didn’t like her and to be honest she wasn’t too fond of him either. He was nothing like Zan and maybe in a way that was a good thing because both men had their faults. Holding the door open wider, Ava made a sweeping mocking gesture for him to enter. Smiling coldly, Max stepped through the door. Closing the door behind him, Ava went to move into the kitchen without a second glance before Max’s voice stopped her. “Wait…I never got the chance to thank you for helping Liz out all these years…You’ll never know how indebted I am to you.”

Ava laughed softly. “I didn’t do it for you, Max. Liz means more to me than a friend…she’s like a sister. I’ll always be there for her…she knows that…you on the other hand she’s still trying to figure out!” Max had to bite back the words that threatened to explode from his mouth. Clenching his jaw, he took a deep breath. He held back for the simple reason that Liz cared about her. “Thank you all the same!” Ava nodded with a small smile. “You’re welcome, Duke!” Watching her retreat into the kitchen, Max waited. Moments later, his breath caught at the sight of Liz making her way slowly down the staircase. She wore a light pink halter top that flattered her creamy gold complexion and black denim jeans that caressed her curves. Her dark shoulder-length mane framed her face making her look that much more sexy and beautiful.

Liz couldn’t tear her eyes away Max’s no matter how hard she tried. He looked so handsome and rugged. He wore a casual black button-up shirt with black denim jeans. His wet hair gleamed, she guessed from a shower, and curled around his temples. Max’s hazel-brown eyes were intense and so filled with awe and love that they seared her to her very soul. “Hi.” She whispered, as she came down onto the landing. “Hi…you look beautiful!” Max replied. “Thank you…You look pretty nice yourself!” Liz smiled with delight. “Are you ready?” He asked, with a slight smile of his own. “Uh yes…let me just go tell Ava that I’m leaving.” Seconds went by as he waited. A moment later, Liz was ready. A hand to her lower back, Max led her to the pickup. She couldn’t help but notice during their short walk how good it felt…how good he felt. His large hand almost took up the whole expanse of her lower back and made her feel so feminine and cherished.

Holding the door open for her, Max watched as Liz climbed up into the fairly new pick up truck. He felt giddy inside at the prospect of having her all to himself…despite the fact that they were just going as friends. After she had made herself comfortable, Liz watched as Max made his way to the driver’s seat. He was so masculine in every way. His younger self had always had a gentle way about him but now as she watched him drive there was a difference in him… a maturity… toughness. Liz realized yet again that Max was no longer a boy but a man. As she thought about it she came to the conclusion that she was just fine with that. Liz no longer needed the boy that she had once loved…who had broken her heart but the man that held the maturity and determination…the boy never had.

They made their way to the movies in a companionable silence. Max had parked the pickup truck two blocks away so that they had walked the remaining blocks to the theater. Walking beside him, Liz thought felt so right and at the same time surreal. Was this really happening? Her emotions were turbulent as they entered the air-conditioned theater. Somehow in the mist of her thoughts, Liz hadn’t realized that Max’s hand was yet again on her lower back. Warmth filled her despite the fact that they were here just as friends.

Ten minutes later, they sat in the dark, silent theater as the movie started. Moments passed as they watched the movie. Max watched her out of the corner of his eye. She looked so peaceful…not at all the way he felt sitting beside her. Liz was so enthralled with the movie that it was if she didn’t really notice Max at all. Sighing, he went back to watching the movie. He hungered for more…for more of what they were. Max desired her not only physically but intellectually and emotionally as well.

Liz watched him out of the corner of her eyes as well. She never would’ve thought eight years ago that eight years in the future she would be sitting beside Max Evans contemplating a relationship. Nervously, she moved her hand into the popcorn for something to nibble on but to her surprise she touch Max’s hand, briefly, which sent flames of desire up her arms. Glancing quickly to see his reaction, Liz noticed that he didn’t even glance at her. Filled with a feeling she couldn’t understand, Liz pulled her hand away.

Trying to control the rush of desire that hit him at Liz’s caress, Max went back to concentrating on the movie. Several moments went by before Max’s hand reached for the popcorn again. Again coming into contact with Liz’s small hand, Max froze while staring at the screen. Liz sat frozen as well…looking down out of the corner of her eye at their hands touching. She took a deep breath before trying to turn her attention back to the screen. To Max’s surprise, she didn’t move her hand away at all. His heart almost stopped as she started moving her hand slowly…caressingly against his.

Liz didn’t know what she was thinking when she started moving her hand leisurely against his. All of her emotions were in turmoil but the emotion that was riding her most at the moment was desire…yearning… for Max. Her mind was screaming at her to stop it…that she was just leading him on…that they were suppose to be taking it slow but her heart and loins wouldn’t listen to a damn thing that her mind raged on about. Liz was in trouble and she knew it…but that still didn’t stop her.

Max closed his eyes to the urges raging in him at the caresses of her soft hand. Suddenly he was bombarded with images. Kneeling on the bed as he stood in front of her, Liz stroked his abdomen, chest, and shoulders…delighting in his short, choppy gasps. “Liz…” “Touch me, Max!” Flash. Looking deeply into each others’ eyes, they shared a deep breath as Max thrust slowly into her tight wet passage way Flash. Thrusting slowly into her, Max sucked in a breath as Liz tightened her muscles around him. Flash. Gritting his teeth, he held her by the cleft of her bottom as his thrusts grew frenzied. “Oh god, Liz! You feel so…!” Max grunted out, unable to finish as she started pulsating around him…grabbing him…caressing him in the mist of her climax. Flash.

Jerking upright into his seat, Max gasped…his heart threatening to leave his chest. “Max, are you okay?” Liz asked urgent concern filling her features as she sat upright as well and a laid a palm on his shoulders. “I’m fine…I just need air!” He replied hoarsely, grabbing her hand before dragging her out of the theater. “What happened, Max?” Taking in deep breaths, Max started walking. Liz fell into step beside him…her small hand still in his. “I saw things…a vision” “A vision…what did you see?” Liz whispered in fear…trying in vain not to meet his eyes. “C’mon let’s go to the park.” Max suggested, before gently pulling her across the street with him.

Panic and embarrassment threatened to strangle her as they made their way to the park. Once in the park, Liz came to a halt. “What did you see, Max?” “I saw us…together!” Max replied, holding Liz’s gaze captive. His eyes were so intense with longing that she had to close her eyes to him. “You saw us together? Was that it?” Liz asked trying not to give any credence to what he saw. “No that wasn’t it…you know exactly what I saw Liz. We were together as a couple…You don’t know how much right now I crave for that to happen…to be able to hold you without worrying that if I do…you’ll pull away from me… shutting me out for good. I need you to trust me again, Liz!”

“That’s not something that will come easily for me, Max, you know that. I’m trying I really am…that’s why I’m here.” Liz replied quietly, meeting Max’s eyes with sadness. “I know and I’m sorry…it’s just that I can’t lose you, Liz, but I feel as if I don’t have you either!” He sighed with frustration, while leading her further into the park. “I’m sorry about the movie!” Max said quietly moments later, while looking down at her with a sad smile. “It’s okay, Max. Maybe we can go another time.” “I’m counting on it. C’mon…I see a few swings over there.” Walking in companionable silence to the swings, Liz felt content… at least for a little while.

Letting go of Max’s strong hand, she made her way over to one of the swings. Swinging herself slowly, Liz met Max’s eyes that held a twinkle of amusement before staring up at the dark sky. Max’s voice filled the silence then. “I always use to think of you whenever I looked up at the sky at night…I would be in a trance for hours just watching the stars…thinking about you!” Max conveyed coming up behind her before pushing the swing. Liz let out a squeal of surprise and happiness. “Really?” She asked once again staring up at the star filled sky. “Yeah…did you ever remember me Liz…think about me…miss me?” “All the time…it hit me the hardest at night when everything had settled down and I realized I was alone once again!” Liz whispered. “I never meant for you to be alone, Liz!” “I know…but I survived. Do you ever wish that you were home?” As the swing came to a stop, Liz looked over shoulder in question to meet Max’s smiling eyes. “I am home…it’s you Liz!”

The drive back to Liz’s house was peaceful. Liz still held Max’s hand as she dozed in the passenger seat beside him…listening to the quiet tunes of the radio. All of Max’s attention was on the road and Liz. His thumb of its own accord stroked Liz’s palm in comfort, love, and hunger. To his surprise yet again, she never pulled away. Pulling up outside of the house moments later, Max hopped out of the pickup truck before making his way to Liz’s side to open up the door. Giving him a warm smile of thanks, Liz climbed out before making her way onto the porch.

After unlocking the door, she turned around to meet Max’s intense gaze. “I had a great time tonight, Max.” “Me too. Maybe we can do this again sometime?” Max asked, fingering a strand of her dark hair. “Maybe. Goodnight Max.” Putting her hands on his broad shoulders, she went to kiss him on the cheek. Turning his head slightly, their lips met briefly… but tenderly. Taking a step back, Liz gave Max a small smile. “Goodnight, Max.” “Good Night Liz.” Stuffing his hands into his jeans, he made his way back to the pickup truck before once again looking back to the small house yearningly. Sighing, Max hopped into the truck to pick up Zan, Alex, and Amelia from his parents.

The Next Part:
A Few Hours Earlier

Seconds after watching her dad back out of the drive way of her grand parents, Amelia plopped down next to Zan and watched as Alex dribbled his basketball. Sighing with happiness, she smiled into the sunshine. The day had come when her mom finally gave her dad a chance….admittedly Amelia was starting to get impatient with the whole mess that was called her parent’s past but they had finally realized that they belonged together. It was only a matter of time now before her mom and dad got married and they were a family. She just couldn’t wait for that day to come.

“What are you so happy about?” Alex asked, as he spotted his sister’s megawatt grin across the distance. She blinked at her brother before sighing again. “Mom and dad are gonna get married…” After having proving successful in ignoring his brother and sister, Zan turned to Amelia with his mouth agape. “What?” “I can feel it!” She said excitedly. “Amelia, stop it! Don’t you get it…this-them being together is not good!” Alex replied, stalking over to his sister in frustration…who had lost her smile. “Whaddya mean it’s not good Alex…don’t you see dad makes mom so happy…happier than we’ve ever seen her…And we’ll finally get to be a family!” Amelia replied with a hopeful smile. “As much as I hate to say it he’s right…your mom doesn’t deserve my dad!”

Amelia lost her patience then. Temper flaring; she stood up with her hands on her hips…as Zan slouched insolently on the steps in front of her. “Oh what do you know? You know nothing about our mom and dad…And just who does dad deserve, Zan, if not my mother?” Alex just stood staring at Zan through Amelia’s rant before saying with equal passion. “Your both wrong…our mother deserves so much more than what our father has to give. Amelia, I’m sorry, but you’re a dreamer…always has been. And Zan, you’re selfish, only thinking about number one. My mother has never done anything to your mother or our dad. She hasn’t even been in Roswell for the last eight years. No the blame…for our parents decisions …rest solely on them equally. You both need to wake up and smell the coffee!” Alex dribbled as he watched his brother and sister watch him in silence.

“I still think you’re wrong, Alex!” Amelia muttered, tears threatening spill free, as she stood up to run into the house…but not before her brother’s words hit her solely where it hurt the most...her heart. “I don’t care, Amelia!” He repeated softly, as he watched his sister run into the house in tears. Throwing the ball in a fit of anger, Alex made his way over to a tree and sat under it. He wanted to be happy for his mom and dad…to be happy for the future but he wasn’t. There was this crazy fear…growing stronger and stronger within in him everyday that said sooner or later his dad was going to hurt to his mom again…and this time for the long term. Laying head upon his knees, Alex just sighed. It was going to be a long day.

Seconds later, taking a sip of the ice cold juice her Grandma left out for them on the counter, Amelia went into the living room to find her Grandmother folding clothes while watching a movie. Standing in the doorway for a few seconds in uncertainty, Amelia shrugged before making her way into comfy but lavish living room. “Hi Grandma.” She said making her presence known. “Hi sweetheart…did you have fun outside?” Diane smiled taking in her granddaughter’s sad hazel brown eyes…so much like her father’s. She still couldn’t get over it…she had a granddaughter and another grandson. “I guess so…” Amelia replied with a small smile that never reached her eyes “Well then what’s wrong?” She just shrugged as looked everywhere else but into her grandmother’s warm inquisitive eyes. “Nothing really…Zan and Alex are just being idiots I mean…illogical as usual!”

“I think I know what you mean…you and Alex remind me so much of Isabel and Max… it’s almost scary.” “Really?” Amelia said with interest. “Yes, have you met your Aunt Isabel yet?” “Not really I saw her at Annabelle’s birthday party and Aunt Maria’s picnic…and few other times in school…we were introduced but we never really talked…” “Oh well you should …tell you what your Uncle Jesse is out of town again…so I’ll invite Isabel over for lunch would you like that?” “Yes” Amelia nodded vigorously. It surprised her just how much she wanted to get to know her Aunt Isabel. She looked nice enough and she had nice clothes. “Amelia…would you like to go up and see Isabel’s old room? I have to drop off these.” Diane asked breaking into her granddaughter’s thoughts as she made her way to the staircase. “Sure I’d love to.”

Outside, Zan watched as Alex sat under the tree lost in thought. Why wouldn’t his dad deserve Liz Parker? He thought. She was nothing special…at least not as beautiful as his mom…but his mom was dead. So why couldn’t his dad and Liz Parker be together if it made his dad happy? Because if they did get together…than his dad would forget about him…wouldn’t he? Was he really selfish…to want his dad all to himself? The answer shocked him…yes…but why? He had lost his mother… he tried to reason with himself…so what was so bad about wanting to keep his dad’s love all to himself. He knew that his dad loved Amelia and Alex just as much as he loved Zan. But Liz Parker was different story… a different kind of love as he remembered his father saying.

Sighing this was so confusing…he wanted his dad to be happy…just not with Liz Parker. My mother has never done anything to your mother or our dad. She hasn’t even been in Roswell for the last eight years. No the blame…for our parents decisions …rest solely on them equally. Was his mother’s decisions also to blame for the way things were now? Was he right in condemning Liz Parker for something she wasn’t fully responsible for? He knew most of his parents’ problems centered around Ms. Parker…but how much of those problems was the result of his dad not being in love with his mom and the man responsible for his mother’s death…Kivar?

Zan was so confused that he impulsively got up from his seat on the steps and walked towards Alex’s basketball. With said item in hand, he dribbled it before letting it roll over to his brother. “Wanna play?” Alex looked up in surprise as the ball rolled towards him before meeting Zan’s turbulent gaze. “Yeah sure!” Standing up, he caught the ball while meeting Zan’s smile with one of his own.

*************

An hour later, Isabel pulled her ’05 black Toyota Highlander into her parents’ driveway. Humming, she made her way into the house where upon first sight she saw two boys’ arm wrestling on her mother’s table. “Hi Zan… Hi Alex!” She greeted in surprise and happiness. Except for at school…she rarely got to see her niece and nephew and that was solely her fault. It was just that…she knew Zan from birth…changed his pampers…babysat him but with Alex and Amelia she had only known them for three months. She just felt so awkward around them…as if Alex and Amelia were strangers instead of her niece and nephew. Shame filled her as she met Alex’s knowing gaze. “Hi Aunt Isabel.” Alex greeted awkwardly before lowering his gaze. “Hi Aunt Isabel.” Zan greeted as well before beating Alex at arm wrestling with a whoop.

Making her way through the kitchen and living room, Isabel walked upstairs where she could've swore she heard giggles. Following those said giggles, she came to a stop at her old bedroom. Opening it…she found Amelia prancing around in her old clothes with face load of make up on…as her mother sat on the bed laughing and clapping her hands. Upon the door opening, Diane Evans turned around to see her daughter. “Isabel you’re here finally. Doesn’t she just look fabulous?” In the mirror across the room, Amelia met Isabel’s eyes with embarrassment and shame. “Yes she does…Hi Amelia!” Isabel greeted with a less awkwardness that she’d had with Alex. Her niece reminded her so much of herself at the age of eight. “Hi Aunt Isabel…I’m sorry…I’ll put it all back I promise!” “Aww sweety you don’t have to do that!” Isabel meeting her gaze with a warm smile.

“Well I’ll just leave you two girls alone…lunch is almost done.” Diane Evans said giving her granddaughter a wink before turning around to leave the room. Isabel felt the awkwardness return again as she watched her mother leave…before turning back to meet Amelia’s gaze once again. What was wrong with her? She taught kids for a living…she could spend a few minutes alone with her niece. “Your room is really cool!” Amelia spoke up finally before plopping her butt down on the bed. “Thank you…it is pretty cool isn’t? I’ve forgotten how much I’ve missed this room! Hey do you wanna help me rearrange my photo albums?” Smiling broadly, Amelia nodded. “Sure.”

**************

Hours later, Amelia stood inside of her father’s bathroom getting ready for bed as Alex and Zan were downstairs getting ready for bed. Exiting the bathroom in her night gown, Amelia made her way to Zan’s room where she would be sleeping. As she opened the door to the middle room, her gaze was drawn to another door…one she realized was Zan’s mother’s room. Taking the necessary steps to the door, she sucked in a breath. Every night that she had spent the night in this house... that door had always haunted her whether awake or in her dreams. Was she in there? Waiting to get revenge? What was behind that door? Amelia was so afraid and ashamed. She hadn’t meant to kill her…she had only been protecting her family. But still shame, guilt, and fear ran through her as the thought remained in her mind that she took someone’s life.

Finally getting up the courage to see for herself that nothing was behind the door, she opened it. Heart pounding and fear running like acid through her veins, she looked into the darkness of the room. There was something there despite the fact that she couldn’t see it. It felt like she stood there for an eternity peering into the darkness before she felt someone’s hand on her shoulder. Looking up she found her father staring into the darkness as well. “Come on Amelia it’s time for bed!” Her father said as he lifted her up into his arms before closing the door. Amelia started to cry then as her eyes remained glued to the door.

“I know what you’re thinking Amelia and it’s not true.” Max finally said breaking the silence. “But it is. I killed her, I killed Zan’s mommy!” Tucking her into bed, Max stared into the torment that was his daughter’s eyes. “You did what was necessary to save our lives and any one of us would have done the same. Tess was not a very nice lady. She hurt many innocent people, and she was about to kill us. Amelia... if you hadn’t stepped in, we might not be here today. You showed a lot of courage that day and for that we love you very much!” Amelia saw the truth in her father’s eyes and felt as if a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders, but there was a kernel of doubt that said that she was still wrong in what she did. Ignoring the said kernel of doubt, Amelia gave her father a small smile before whispering she loved him too.

The Next Part:
Two Weeks Later

Entering room 224 of the Tumbleweed Inn, Ava groaned in despair. Running late yet again and coming face to face with this disaster only compacted her depression more that today was not to be one of her better days. Glancing around the room, she caught a whiff of something that could only be described as sweat and sex. It would only take a wave of a hand, she thought, just a wave to make her day a whole lot easier. But then she thought about all of those stories that Liz told her about the FBI and groaned some more. The room could be bugged, she thought with a curse. Just because the FBI hadn’t haunted Roswell in some many years…didn’t mean that with some slight slip up that they wouldn’t be on their doorsteps tomorrow morning.

Starting the arduous and disgusting task of cleaning the hotel room, Ava thought back to her life in New York where she didn’t have to worry about being who she was…especially in public. The big apple was such a huge city that made using their powers all the more easier. But in Roswell that was an all together a different story…this being the alien capital of the world and all. If you would have asked Ava nine years ago if she would end up living in a small town called Roswell, a city filled to capacity with nuts, alien hunters, and cornball aliens, she probably would have laughed herself into a coma. But here she was…picking up a condom while considering her bad fortune in dumping Kyle Valenti…could things get any weirder?

She missed him…how was that possible when she didn’t even know him? There had been one date…one kiss…and two weeks of separation. So why did she feel as if she had lost her soul mate? Oh damn…she was starting to think like Liz…and as much as she loved the girl…that wasn’t good a thing. Unlike her dupe, Ava had never doubted that Zan didn’t love her…she just accepted it…accepted being alone because no human boy would ever accept her for who she was and she probably would’ve never accepted a male of another species so unstable, both emotionally and physically.

She wasn’t a Virgin Mary but she sure as hell wasn’t someone like Lonnie. Ava neither considered Lonnie a friend or a sister. She was the scariest alien Ava had ever encountered. She prayed on fear, toyed with peoples’ emotions, and in the end looked out for number one. Lonnie had no problem getting down and dirty with males of the human population while Ava had always been a bit reserved…knowing that deep down she had wanted more than a one night lay. Don’t misunderstand her…she wasn’t a romantic nor was she an optimist but she always had that secret hope that one day…she would be more than someones’ burden or toy.

Ava remembered the day when she had first laid eyes on Kyle Valenti as if it were yesterday. He had looked at her…the way a man looked at a woman he wanted for the long term and not just for a quick lay… the way Max looked at Liz. Kyle had looked at her as if she were special and for a few seconds she had believed it…that is until everything hit the fan…and Kyle found out that Tess mind warped him. Ava had seen the change in him…the suspiciousness in his eyes…even if he didn’t want to admit it. They had gone out and had fun but something dangerous…suspicious always entered his eyes whenever something had reminded him of Tess. And if Ava were to be honest with herself…she did just that.

It had been two weeks since she had called a halt to whatever it was that they were doing and two days since Kyle’s last message. There was frustration, sadness, and longing in his voice as she listened to him repeatedly on the answering machine. He wanted to get to know her. He said that she didn’t remind him of Tess. She knew that was a lie. He asked for a chance and she never answered. Ava was just so tired…of everything…of being compared to Tess…of the suspicious stares…of her growing restlessness. There was only one reason…well three actually that kept her in Roswell despite all of her reservations… Alex, Amelia, and Liz.

After having cleaned the room an hour later, Ava pushed the cleaning cart into the morning air as the sun glared into her eyes. Moving onto the next room, she happened to glance into the empty parking lot to find… who other than the man that haunted her thoughts both day and night…Kyle Valenti. He leaned against his jeep…watching her intently with sadness, hunger, and a determined glint. Feeling her stomach clench and her belly fill with butterflies, Ava made her way down the staircase…towards him. She knew why he was here…his eyes were the windows into his soul. Stepping in front him, Ava met his eyes steadily. “What are you doing here?” “You never answered my messages… and I needed to see you!” She felt her determination and resolve melt away in the blink of an eye. Nodding, she whispered, “Let’s drive!”

**************************

Hours Later, Liz sat beside Max in her car as they made their way to his parents’ home for dinner. There was absolute silence in the back as Alex looked out one window, Amelia sat listening to her walkman, and Zan looked forlornly out of the other window. Liz wondered somberly if it would always be like this…this tense awkward silence…where no one knew what to say or how to proceed. Max had been trying to convince her for the past three days to accept the invitation from his parents for dinner but something had held her back from accepting...maybe it was the derision that she would probably see in their eyes. She knew they knew the truth…about her teen pregnancy…about her running away from home.

They accepted Alex and Amelia but would they accept her? But the most important question to ask…was why did she care? She had been living with the stares and the questions of Roswell residents for close to three months now...why did she care what they felt about her? Well she thought maybe it was because she was still in-love with their son…maybe it was because she genuinely liked Mrs. and Mr. Evans? As if sensing her distress, Max’s hand found hers and squeezed it lightly in reassurance. Turning her gaze from the road…towards Max she found that his gaze had remained on the road as well.

They were getting closer…talking more to Liz’s awe, disbelief, and happiness. She would have never thought that they would be this close again. Max had taken her out to Senior Chows last Friday… It had felt like their first date all over again. Their first date had been innocent…beautiful but this date had been…un-describe-able. They had ate, danced, played pool, danced some more, and than kissed… repeatedly. Some innocent and loving…some hot and drugging. And at the end the night…being the gentleman that he was…Max had kissed her on the forehead and said good night. If Liz didn’t know better…she would’ve of thought that she was disappointed that he didn’t take things a bit further. It was crazy the way she was feeling lately…as if she were on Cloud 9. She just knew any moment now that she going fall to the earth with a reality check…but for some odd reason she didn’t seem to care anymore.

An hour later after having thanked the Evans for a wonderful dinner, Liz sighed in contentment as she made her way to her car. Walking, she felt someone’s gaze and looked up to meet Zan’s. He had been quieter than usual all evening. Upon Max picking her up, Zan had been unnervingly polite to Liz’s confusion and then at odd moments such as this she would catch him looking at her with an intense scrutiny. Sighing she climbed into the car…despite the fact sometimes he made her nervous…he was still a child…Max’s child…her student… she was worried about him. She felt his confusion and fear and wished that she could get close enough to him to make everything normal again. As Max climbed into her car and started the engine…she wondered yet again if things would always be this confusing and tense.

Chapter 6:

Six Months Later

Driving down interstate 80, Max glanced briefly across the console towards a sleeping Liz Parker. She was absolutely amazing, he thought, as he tried to keep his eyes on the road. They had become closer to Max’s pleasure after their first date six months ago. Despite the fact, that they were take things slow…he was finding himself falling more and more in love with her each moment they spent together. Max remembered their fifth date like it was yesterday…who was he kidding? He remembered every date they had gone out on. All of them had been special in his eyes but one in particular would always be memorable to him. It had been a month ago today…Liz’s birthday. While Maria had watched Amelia, Alex, and Zan, Max had been determined to make Liz’s night special.

Standing outside of an empty Crash Down, he watched as her gaze searched the premises forlornly. The plan had been to let Maria let it slip that they were planning a birthday party for Liz at the Crash Down. They had joined together in ranks as a family…something that they hadn’t done in years to make everything come into motion…even Nancy was all for it. Breaking out of his thoughts, Max watched her from the shadows as she stood in the middle of the café fingering her black floral-tie dress in disappointment. Using his powers to dim the light in the restaurant, he stood outside the door as the contraption they had made earlier came undone. Suddenly a dozen white rose petals fell from the ceiling as Liz stood in astonishment and awe.

He smiled before entering the diner unnoticed. Liz stood with her back to him as she took in the floating white rose petals. Standing behind her, he caught a whiff of vanilla and couldn’t help groaning. Her hair lay in waves down her back… held back from her face by an elegant clip. As if sensing someone’s presence, Liz turned around slowly to find the father of her children in an all out black tux. Letting out a little giggle, she grinned…her eyes sparkling with mirth as they stared into Max’s soulful eyes. He stared down tenderly upon her…taking in her infinite beauty. “What are you doing here, Max?” “Making your dreams come true!” Max responded with a small smile while kissing her tenderly on the cheek before taking her hand. “And what are my dreams?” Liz asked teasingly as stared up into his intense hazel brown eyes. “You’ll just have to wait and see…C’mon Liz…trust me!” Nodding, she grinned. “Okay but it had better be good.”

“Oh my gosh…a limo?” She said seconds later as she stared at the white limousine in awe. “Get in Liz…I promise you it’ll be a night to remember.” Opening up the door, Max helped her inside. Taking a deep breath, Liz watched excitedly as he climbed into the other side. What Liz never realized was…was tonight she would to take the final plunge.
Moments later, Liz sat confused as she looked outside at their old high school. “Max?” “Liz…before we go in I want to give you something.” Pulling out a box from nowhere, Max sat towards Liz. Sucking in a breath, she waited. “Do you remember the prom, Liz?” Of course she remembered the Prom…she remembered everything that happened that night. Somberly she nodded…as her eyes met his with wariness. “I do too… I’ve seen it in your eyes…that night! You were beautiful and that was the worst night of your life…I don’t know what I should kick myself for more…letting you walk away or hurting you by kissing Tess!”

“I’ll apologize for both and hope that someday you’ll forgive me…here!” He finished gruffly, handing her the box. Meeting his eyes, Liz opened up the box and gasped. It was her corsage. It looked brand new…as if it were never thrown in the trash…as if it were never eight years old. “Max? Where did you get this?” Clearing his throat…his eyes full of emotion, Max answered, “I found it the night of the prom…I had spent all night looking for you…and then I just happened to glance in the trash can. I kinda had my suspicions then of why you left but I never wanted to admit it myself. I messed up that night for you Liz and for that I will never forgive myself…but perhaps I can make it up to you by replacing those memories with a night even more special…will you spend tonight with me…will you trust me again just for tonight!” Max asked with a small smile as regret filled his eyes.

Smiling, Liz took the corsage out of the box… fingering it. “If I do remember correctly Max Evans…you put the corsage on me…it wouldn’t be right if you didn’t do it again.” Liz whispered, with a teasing smile… that had Max taken aback. “Okay!” Taking the corsage from her fingers…he gently stroked it around her wrist…all the while staring into her eyes. She could see the question in his eyes and couldn’t help but answer. “Yes…I have a lot of bad memories of us Max, but I also have a lot of good ones too. We all make mistakes…even kings...and for tonight I would like to just forget those mistakes and be with you…can you handle that Max?” Smiling tenderly, Max fingered a rose petal out of her hair. “I think so…c’mon Liz…It’s time to make your dreams come true!”

Moments later, Liz stood in the gym of her old high school as family and friends sung happy birthday. Max never ceased to amaze her…instead of a cozy dinner…she had found the people that she loved the most lying in wait for her. He had moved away from her side then with a kiss on the forehead and a wink before getting lost in the crowd. For a moment of confusion, Liz felt the loss of him at her side...as if she were caught adrift and had lost her safety net. Shaking away her thoughts, she gave both Amelia and Alex a kiss on the cheek before partying her 26th birthday away.

Liz stood eating a piece of cake as she watched Zan, Alex, and Amelia dance the night away on the dance floor. It had been one of hell of a surprise to watch Zan come up to her and wish her a genuine happy birthday. Looking around on the dance floor, she tried to find Max. He had made himself invisible upon arrival…one moment she would see him and the next he was gone. Why was the night just not the same without him by her side? Liz had danced all night…with everyone from her kids to Mr. Evans but she had never once danced with Max. “You know he paid and planned this all by himself?” Isabel said coming up beside her with a smile.

“What? Max did all this?” Liz asked, shock and awe hitting her hard in the solar plexus. “Yup…we just got an invitation a week ago to just be here…he didn’t tell you?” She shook her head slowly as if in a daze... tears filling her eyes. “No…I thought you had all planned this…why?” Isabel just smiled in sympathy before saying, “Do you really need an answer to that question? He loves you!” At that moment, Max’s strong tall body came into view… across the room in a shadowed corner. He stood watching her…with longing… his hands stuffed in his trousers. Putting her cake down, Liz made a decision…to take the final plunge. It was time to forgive and forget. Making her way through the crowded dance floor, Liz took Max’s hand before dragging him onto the dance floor.

Moments later, Max pulled up into Liz’s driveway and turned to wake her up but before he could…he found her eyes on him. “I thought you were sleep?” “Me sleep? No way…I was just thinking.” “About what?” Max asked beyond curious. “About you.” “About me?” “Is that so hard to believe…that I could be thinking about you?” Liz asked teasingly, staring up into his beautiful eyes. “No-yes…Sometimes yes it is…I would have never believed that you would give me a chance!” He whispered, his lips touching hers tenderly with each word. “Well believe it…at one time or another I was even obsessed with you! Can you believe that?” Max took several moments to think before nodding…laughing softly, “Yes.” Liz burst out laughing before climbing out of the pick up.

Making their way onto the porch, Liz unlocked the door before turning to one Max Evans. “I had a great time, Max. Thank you for inviting me!” “Thank you for coming…I know that you probably had other plans tonight…” “Other than obsessing about you? No not really…kiss me, Max!” Liz whispered, staring up into his handsome face. Obeying, Max kissed her…a kiss of erotic fantasies. Wrapping her arms around his neck, Liz moaned as Max made love to her with his mouth. They stood for what seemed like hours holding each other…Max trembled with unleashed needs and desires before pulling away from her. Liz almost groaned out loud with disappointed…desire running hot and rampant through her veins. Taking a deep breath, Max kissed her on the forehead before gruffly wishing her a goodnight. Liz watched as he drove away before heaving sigh and making her way inside of her quiet home.

The Next Part:
A Few Days Later

Getting ready for bed as usual, Zan brushed his teeth and washed his face. To anyone with human eyes he appeared to be just a regular normal boy getting ready for bed but Zan was anything but normal. Looking into the bathroom mirror, he looked at his reflection and felt himself smile with contentment. He was feeling somewhat okay again…never would he have thought that that would happen. Zan was no longer filled with anger and fear…well maybe fear. He still missed his mom but the anger somehow over time had faded away with the dreams. Nope he was no longer angry but resigned to that fact that his mom was gone. Fear… What was he afraid of? Of being alone…abandoned…of losing his dad! Yeah, he was still afraid.

His dad was happy… happier than Zan had ever seen him. The reason behind this sudden happiness…Zan guessed was none other than Ms. Parker. She terrified him but at the same time intrigued him. Zan had never thought he would actually start to like her or to look forward to her class during school but he did. He wouldn’t be caught dead before admitting it out loud though. During the six months that had passed, Zan had seen Ms. Parker as a person…a real person…instead of the enemy. He had watched her laugh, had watched her slump in her seat after school bone tired… defeated, had watched her angry which wasn’t a pretty sight, had witnessed her smother Amelia and Alex with kisses, and had even upon occasion watched her cry…at her dad’s and Uncle Alex’s graves.

Sometimes he watched her from a distance and sometimes he watched her up close. She didn’t pretend with him…with fake smiles and sympathy but was just there trying to heal her own wounds. At times he felt angry when she arrived because it was suppose to be just him and his mom but at other times he actually sought her out and was disappointed when he could never find her. But then things changed two months ago. No one at Aunt Maria’s had ever noticed him leave because he would always choose to leave when the house was in total chaos and Uncle Michael was asleep. Ms. Parker, of course, had asked him that one day, two months ago, if anyone knew where he was and he had lied.

Zan knew she had read right through him…especially when she had issued him a deal…well rather a black mail, moments later. She had said that if he chose to sneak around Roswell…she would have to be his ride to and from…and if she ever caught him out alone…she would spill. Her reasoning being that despite Roswell being a small town…it still wasn’t safe for an eight year old. Grumbling that it was deal…he had shook on it and Ms. Parker had been his ride every since. He would sneak out of course but would always find her parked outside of Aunt Maria’s. Zan also had the feeling that Ms. Parker had asked his dad…if she could spend sometime with him. Which Zan knew still had his dad puzzled to this day.

Exiting the bathroom, Zan made his way into his bedroom but not before stopping outside of his mother’s bedroom. Amelia was terrified of that room and he couldn’t really blame her. It was just something about that room…that he had never before now noticed…something spooky…haunting. Shaking his head, Zan ran into his room. His dad was downstairs finishing some paper work…any minute now he would be up to tuck Zan in with questions about Liz and how Zan felt about her. Zan could recite the questions verbatim…Do you like Liz now? Are you okay with spending time with her? What do you two talk about? Are you okay, Zan? Are you okay with me dating her? Climbing into bed Zan shook his head with a small smile because he always pretended to be too sleepy to answer… but deep down he knew the answer to some of those questions were…yes.

Hours later asleep in his bed, Zan tossed and turned. Something was calling out to him. Moaning in his sleep, he tried to push the call to follow away… to shut it out…but he just couldn’t ignore it. The voice… it was so mesmerizing and scary. Crying softly with fear, Zan obeyed. Rising from bed still in a slumber, he followed the voice…through his room…into the hall…to the door of his mother’s bedroom. Pushing the door open, Zan entered the darkened room. He walked straight towards the center of the room and knelt down onto the hardwood floor. Using his powers, he raised the nails up out of the floor board. As he never heard the continuing beeping sound that grew louder and louder, Zan pried the board up and came awake instantly as he heard his father’s shout before an explosion rocketed the room.

As he looked up, he found himself surrounded by his father’s force field. “Are you okay? You’re not hurt are you? Zan…answer me?” His father asked with concern and fear, deeply etched in his face, as he shook Zan tenderly out of his daze. They were lying in corner across the room. “I’m okay…I think…what was that?” Zan asked with more curiosity than fear. “I don’t know…I want you to wait out side…” Max commanded, standing up. “But dad…” “Zan wait outside and if anything happens… run! Do you understand?” Sighing, Zan nodded, “Okay.” “Good...now do you remember how to put up your shield?” Zan nodded enthusiastically before using his energy to do just that. “Okay now make a break for it!” Max commanded, inclining his head towards the door.

Once Zan was safely outside of the room, Max surveyed the room…the walls were charred black by the explosion. His heart beat rapidly with fear, relief, and anger at the thought of what could’ve have happened if he hadn’t been drawn to this room a lot sooner. He would have lost his son...he would have lost Zan! Max had always had a feeling especially since Tess’s death that something was extremely wrong with this house…with this room. But for Zan’s sake…stability, he had chosen to ignore his instincts once again and it had almost cost him his son. Guilt and fear ran rampant in his veins until he felt sick to his stomach. What was wrong with him that he couldn’t see the most obvious warning signs?

With self disgust and renewed determination, he walked across the room…to where Zan had once sat. There was a hole the size of a basketball from where the bomb had exploded. Max instantly suspected that Tess planted it… but why? Zan could have triggered it at anytime…and if it was anything he knew about Tess…he knew that she would never harm their son. So the question still remained in his mind of why she would plant a bomb in her room…beneath the floor boards? Taking a deep breath, Max stuck his hand in the hole. It ran arm deep. Suddenly, his hand touched something hard and cold….a box? Sitting back with moonlight shining in through window, he examined the metal box. Alien symbols were engraved in it with the Royal Seal ‘V’ centered in the middle. Tracing his fingers over the symbols, he got a vision of Liz as she had been on Antar.

Sitting back, Max used his powers to unseal the melded metal. So this was what she was hiding. Opening the box, he pulled out a book with Tess’s handwriting, a diamond, and a map. On the map was printed some kind of oval shaped machine...with Solarian printed above it. Puzzled beyond belief, Max turned to the book. Flipping through the pages, he found that Solarian was even more powerful than the Granolith and that it was hidden away on Earth somewhere. Tess and Kivar had been obsessed with finding it. The Solarian had unlimited powers. Its creator was none other than Prince Rainer of Wilderan.

“Dad?” Zan asked worriedly, poking his head through the door. Snapping out of his thoughts, Max stood up with the box in head and walked out of the room to stand in front of his son. “Pack some clothes…we’re going to a hotel!” “What’s in there?” Zan asked beyond curious as he watched his dad close his mother’s door. “A map and a few other things...” Max replied absently as he walked into Zan’s room. “Who planted that bomb?” He froze as he threw Zan’s underwear in a duffel bag. What could he say? That Tess planted the bomb? “I don’t know…I just know that it’s not safe here and that maybe we should move!” He replied quietly, throwing more clothes into the bag. “But…dad we can’t! This is home!” Zan cried out in shock. Max remained silent as he continued to pack some of his son’s clothes. Plopping down on the bed, Zan felt so confused and scared. First he lost his mom and now he was losing his home. He just didn’t know if he could take anymore

Twenty minutes later, Max dialed Michael’s number as they drove across town to the Tumble Weed Inn. “Yeah!” Michael greeted gruffly with annoyance. Glancing at the clock, Max realized that it was 1:36 in the morning. “It’s me…” “This had better be good Maxwell…” He grumbled as he rose from the bed to leave the room. He would catch hell if he woke up either Maria or Mikhail. “Just listen…Zan triggered a bomb in Tess’s room and I found some things. We’re staying at the Tumble Weed Inn…meet me at Liz’s tomorrow morning at 7!” Michael just stood in the hallway in shock as Max’s words registered. “Is Zan okay? Are you okay?” “Yeah we’re just great…” “Do you know who planted it? What does Liz have to do with this?” “Listen Michael… I can’t talk about this right now but I’ll give you all the details tomorrow!” He replied covertly watching Zan from the corner of his eye.

“Yeah…alright…just be safe Maxwell!” A few seconds later after having hung up with Michael, Max dialed Isabel’s number. To say that their conversation wasn’t easy was an understatement. They argued back and forth on whether or not Max and Zan should stay at Isabel’s before Max finally admitted defeat…promising that he and Zan would be over there tomorrow but just for tonight or rather this morning…they needed some time alone. Agreeing with reluctance to back off some, Isabel sighed before also agreeing to their meeting that afternoon. Questions ran through her mind as to what Max found and anxiety ran through her veins as they said their goodbyes.

Moments later, he pulled up into the Tumble Weed Inn and sighed before looking over to Zan. He had not said a word since leaving the house which worried Max all the more. Exhaustion and defeat ate at both Zan and Max as they exited the truck in complete silence. After having made their way to the front desk…they walked side by side outside to find room 215. Upon entering the dank but clean room, Zan slumped down onto a bed. Max slowly sat down beside him…his head in his hands. “Are we really moving?” Zan whispered moments later staring up at the ceiling. “Yes…” “But…it’s our home!” Max sighed before meeting his son’s eyes with sadness and worry. “It’s too dangerous, Zan, and who knows…maybe it’s for the best!” “It’s not…I don’t want to move… Mom is dead and the only memories I have of her are in that house! You might want to forget about her but I don’t!” Zan whispered as he sat up…angry tears leaking down the side of his face.

Max watched his son silently. He wished he could lie and say that that wasn’t true but it was. His gut churned with anger at both himself and Tess. How he going reassure his son that everything would be okay when he wasn’t so sure himself. Just when things were starting to work out and Zan was becoming himself again…this had to happen. “I know you have every right to doubt me right now and I don’t blame you but I need you to trust me to know what’s best for you. It’s too dangerous in that house and I can’t take the chance of something happening to you. You know I’m right…don’t you? You’re just too angry to admit it! Look at me Zan…just because we’re moving doesn’t mean that we’ll forget about your mom…the memories will always be there. But change is also good as well and maybe we need that!” Looking away from his dad’s pleading gaze, Zan refused to accept the inevitable. Without so much as a word to his father’s heartfelt words, he climbed into bed…turning away from his father in rejection. Max just sighed.

*******************************

Hours later, Liz sat down at the table drinking coffee as she watched her son in fascination wolf down his pancakes. Amelia watched her brother as well and wanted to smack him one…he was so gross sometimes. “In a rush to get to school, Alex?” Looking up from his plate, he frowned before smiling sheepishly. “No!” “Well then maybe you should slow down.” Liz smiled teasingly. At that moment, Ava entered the kitchen with a frown. “We have visitors!” At that moment a knock came at the door. She frowned as well…Max had called her this morning asking if he could come over…telling her that they needed to talk and that it was important. Liz had been filled with dread every since…maybe it was Max’s serious tone…maybe it was her sixth sense but something was definitely wrong.

Opening the front door Liz came face to face with Max, Zan, Isabel, and Michael. “Good Morning…come on in!” She greeted with unease…opening the door wider so that they could all enter. “Morning” Max greeted with a small smile of pleasure. Zan, Isabel, and Michael followed closely after with a greeting. At that moment, Amelia, Alex, and Ava chose to enter the living room. After all of the greetings were made… there was a tense silence. “So…” Liz said giving Max a questioning look. “What’s going on, Max?” “Hey mom…can we go show Zan outside?” Amelia interrupted…sensing that this was adult talk and that it wasn’t good. “Sure sweety…just don’t get dirty okay…you have school in an hour.” “Okay…come on guys.” Amelia smiled with a warning glint in her eyes. Giving Amelia a dirty look, Alex followed…Zan right behind him.

Watching Amelia, Alex, and Zan walk out the front door, everyone then turned their attention to Max and the box in his hand… waiting. Watching Liz, Max began to recite what he had told Michael and Isabel hours earlier...about Zan dreaming walking into Tess’s room… and about the bomb going off. Liz remain frozen to the spot as she listened to his voice…all the while her eyes were glued to the box. “It was melded shut and anyway when I touched the seal…I got a vision of you!” Max finished watching Liz steadily. “So what you are saying is that whatever is in that box is connected to Liz?” Isabel asked…watching Liz as well. “Yeah…that’s what I’m saying” He finished while opening the box itself.

“So I’m kinda confused…is Liz the Queen…I mean we never really discussed this!” Isabel asked once again in confusion. Everyone’s gaze drew to Liz in that moment. She stood frozen to spot…confusion, fear, and resignation eating away at her. She was Liz…she never really came to terms with being a Queen of another planet. “I guess…I kinda am… I was sent down in a different ship with my parents…or rather protectors. They aren’t really my biological parents as I’m told. My real parents are Prince Rainer and Princess Kiara of Antar. I was Max’s second wife… and since Tess was considered a Traitor…I was considered the Queen!” She finished soberly, wishing that this wasn’t happening.

“Okay so…what’s in the box, Maxwell?” Michael asked after a moment of silence. “Well…there’s a map of a machine called The Solarian, the key to a ship, and Tess’s diary!” Max replied pulling out the contents of the box. “The key to our ship?” Isabel asked, examining the diamond. “No…I think it’s the key to Liz’s ship!” At that moment all eyes were on her again. “Well there is only one person who knows where that is and…what all of this means!” “Who?” Michael asked. “My mother…” “Well let’s go…” “No Michael…we can’t…not right now. The kids have school to go to and I have to go to work!” Liz breathed, feeling her composure slipping away. “Yeah I have to get the office…we’ll meet at the Crash Down at 6…is that okay?” Max asked, watching her in concern and guilt. “Yeah sure!” Liz answered with a sad smile as everyone stood up to leave.

Closing the box, Max walked over to stand in front of Liz…after Michael and Isabel had said their goodbyes. “Can I leave this here? We’re currently staying at the hotel and I don’t want Zan to get into it!” “Yeah…go ahead…so you’re really moving? How’s Zan taking that?” “Not so good…he refuses talk to me!” He replied somberly, fingering back a strand of Liz’s soft hair behind her ear. “Give him sometime…everything will work it’s way out!” She smiled, staring up into his beautiful hazel eyes with a sad smile. “I will…about moving is that a house across the street for rent?” Max asked his lips mere inches from hers. “Umm I think so…” Liz smiled teasingly, her mind blank of anything but Max.

“Have I told you how pretty you look this morning, Ms. Parker?” Max asked smiling softly down upon her. “No you haven’t!” She replied with a small pout before smiling. “Well you look amazing!” “Thank you!” Liz whispered, before finally meeting Max’s soft lips with her own. The kiss was a brief but hard one as Max pulled away to Liz’s disappointment seconds later. Giving her a kiss on the forehead, Max smiled down at her. “I’ll see you later!” “Yeah bye” Liz replied as she watched him walk out the front door with a small smile gracing his lips. “Tease…such a tease!” She muttered to herself.

Chapter 7:

Hours later, Max, Isabel, Michael, Liz, and Nancy stood outside of a cave opening in silence. “Kivar didn’t want me did he…he wanted The Solarian?” Liz asked suddenly breaking the silence. “No…he did want you but he also wanted this!” Nancy whispered indicating the location of The Solarian . “Why didn’t you tell me about this?” She asked in anger, turning her gaze on her mother. “This was to be kept in secret…even from you…this is a weapon far more advanced than the Granolith. It was an order that if it was a life or death crisis that then would The Solarian’s location be revealed!” “News flash mom…I’ve been dealing with life or death crises since I was sixteen! I wish I could’ve known about this a whole lot sooner!” Liz whispered bitterly, before taking a step into the cave.

Watching in silence, Max grabbed Liz’s arm before she took another step into the darkness of the cave. Looking up into his eyes, she registered his plea clearly. He wanted her safe and he wanted her trust. They were in this together. Taking his hand in acceptance, she accepted his support and protection. What were they she asked herself other than friends? Were they a couple? They had kissed a hand full of times, had talked about everything and nothing at all, had grown closer she guessed in the six months since their first date had past. But again…what were they?

Confusion, fear, and anger ate at her as they came to a dead end. “Did we take a wrong turn?” “No this is it…it’s there Liz!” Nancy replied with a smile of encouragement and sadness. Looking to the cool surface in front of her, she lifted her palm to where she suspected the handprint would be. The ground suddenly started shaking as the smooth stone wall slid open to reveal…The Solarian. It was...huge Liz thought taking a step towards it. The closer she came to it…the brighter it glowed red. “Is it supposed to do that?” Isabel asked in alarm. “Yes…it registers Liz’s presence…as it should. Prince Rainer gave this machine one command…to protect Liz. No one knows that though…only us… we know the true meaning behind this machine. It just wouldn’t work for anyone!” Nancy finished with a small smile.

“What can it do?” Michael asked, stepping forward to examine the machine. “It can make a human an alien…make an alien a human….enhance powers…enable your memories…and so much more!” Liz, with Max’s hand in hers, took the first step into the chamber. She was mesmerized…couldn’t take her eyes off of the red glow of oval shaped machine. Something else caught her eye as she stood with Max examining The Solarian. Slowly pulling away from him, Liz walked over to the far wall of the chamber and stopped. After having felt Liz pull away, Max watched Liz. As if feeling his gaze, she turned to meet his intense hazel-brown eyes before turning back to study the wall. Walking over to her, Max tried to see what she saw. “What is it? What’s wrong, Liz?”

“There’s something behind this wall…I can feel it!” Putting her hand onto the cool surface, Liz closed her eyes and jumped when she opened them again to see that it was glowing. ”Max?” At that moment, before he could answer, the wall separated to reveal another room. Stepping hesitantly into the second room, Liz grabbed Max’s hand. Giving it a reassuring squeeze, he surveyed two rectangular cases standing up against a wall and in the middle was a pod…Liz’s pod. Taking one step at a time, she stooped down to touch the small incubation pod. Max’s hand immediately settled onto hers. All at once, visions hit her.

A little girl climbing out of the pod… shivering as she stood alone. Looking around in confusion, she fingered the white substance in her hair. Big brown eyes looked up into two more empty pods…touching them curiously. Shivering and shaking, the little girl made her way into the corner to wait. Days passed before she awakened to see two beings standing over her. Looking into the brown eyes of the tall one with dark hair, Latanya De Christoff held out her arms to be taken out into her new home. Liz’s mind was suddenly filled with the memories of tasting for the first time, meeting Grandma Claudia, taking a bath, watching T.V, becoming Liz Parker, and then suddenly everything went black.

Seconds went by, minutes went by before Liz came awake, rubbing the back of her head. “Your awake…how are you feeling?” Max asked from the driver’s seat. “Umm terrible…my head hurts…where are we?” She asked, tenderly touching the back of her as she opened her eyes to see nothing but desert. “I’m taking you home….Isabel’s right behind us with your mom.” Taking one hand off the steering wheel, Max gently touched the back of Liz’s head where she had hit her head when she had fainted before pulling over to the side of the road. Waving Michael and Isabel on, he turned to meet Liz’s glazed brown eyes. “What happened?” She asked as she felt Max’s healing touch at the back of her throbbing skull. “You fainted…I think the memories were too much for you.”

As he finished healing the back of her head, he gingerly massaged it. “Thank you!” Liz whispered biting her lower lip. “No problem…do you want to talk about it?” “I don’t know… just when I think my life is going back to normal…this happens. You know all this time I’ve known about my alien status…I’ve never truly believed it or rather embraced it and then today seeing that machine… and then seeing my pod…it truly hit home…that I’m not Liz Parker!” Tears filled her eyes as she tried to blank them away…she truly felt vulnerable for the first time in a long time. “Liz-Listen to me....are you listening?” She nodded obediently staring up into his determined gaze. “You are Liz Parker…you’ve been Liz Parker since you stepped out of your pod…and you will forever be Liz Parker…the woman I fell in love with in third grade. We can’t live in the past, Liz, and we can’t deny who we are... You are Liz Parker…just like I am Max Evans!” Max finished staring earnestly into her brown eyes, hoping upon hope that she believed him.

*************************************

A few days later, Zan sat in Aunt Maria and Uncle Michael back yard broodingly playing his game boy. He frowned even more as the sun beat down on him. Sighing, he went back to winning. Annabelle watched him from inside the kitchen wondering if she should go out or not. Zan was as always moody but she felt that she could help if she got up the courage to sit beside him. She liked Zan…liked talking to him…when he wasn’t in one of his foul moods. Sighing, she turned toward the freezer to take out two freeze pops. Her mom and dad were in the living room with Alexa and Mikhail watching cartoons. She had been watching cartoons too until she had looked around to find Zan missing yet again. Opening the screen door, letting it bang shut, Annabelle plopped down beside the boy that would forever change her life.

“Here…Want to talk about it?” Zan narrowed his eyes down at the little person sitting beside him. She had always reminded him of a little fairy sprite… one of those magical fairies in a fairy tale granting wishes. “No.” He answered grimly taking the freeze pop from her hands. “Well I wanna talk about it…what’s wrong?” Annabelle replied stubbornly pulling the game boy from his hands. “Everything…now give it back!” “No! What’s everything?” Heaving a sigh, Zan gave up getting his game boy back…knowing how stubborn Annabelle could be when she set her mind to it. “My dad’s selling our house…can I have my game boy back now?” “No…I heard what happened…you almost got blown up!” “I did not…it was an accident!” Zan replied in frustration. “It was an accident that blew up right in your face from what I overheard from my mom and dad.” Annabelle replied, taking a lick of her freeze pop.

“Oh what do you know?” “More than you do obviously!” Annabelle shot back, raising her eyebrows at him in a challenge. “Your mom didn’t die and your house isn’t being sold…so you know nothing!” Zan retorted, grabbing his game boy back in anger. She just sat there in silence and watched him. “Your right…but so is Uncle Max. If you haven’t figured it out already…parents know what’s best…how I don’t know but they do. For a few short seconds, I bet his life flashed before his eyes when he realized what was happening…don’t ya think? Just picture it…you sleepwalking and a bomb going off. Imagine if Uncle Max had been asleep or in the shower? Where would you be now Zan? Probably dead.” She stated nonchalantly, licking her freeze pop carefully while studying him.

Zan tried to concentrate on the game but Annabelle’s words pounded at him. Would he be dead right now? Is his dad right? He had never thought about it like that…maybe he had never thought about it at all. “What if it happens again? What if there are more? What if next time it’s too…” “Alright-Alright. I get it!” Zan interrupted, fear clouding his green eyes as he met Annabelle’s gaze. What if she was right? What if there were more? What if it happened again? What if his dad happened to set one off one day and Zan was too late? Sighing, he laid his head in his palms. “I didn’t mean to scare you, Zan!” She whispered in guilt. “You didn’t scare me!” Zan mumbled in anger. “Hey…Maybe it’s not so bad moving…you get a new room!” She replied, hope filling voice as she wiggled her eyebrows. “Yeah maybe” He muttered without expression before turning back to his game boy. Annabelle just sighed beyond exasperated.

Two weeks later, Liz lay on the sofa in her living room as Amelia and Alex watched cartoons. She felt content at best. It was a Saturday…no chores needed to done, no assignments needed to be graded, and the world didn’t need to be saved. It was just her, Amelia, Alex, and Sponge Bob. Ava at the moment was in her kitchen having breakfast with Kyle. With a small smile, Liz watched Amelia and Alex laugh hysterically at something Patrick said. At that moment, a truck’s engine chose to interrupt her silence. It was 8:30 in the morning. There was absolutely no movement down this street so early on a Saturday. Getting up out of curiosity, Liz moved towards the window. Pulling back the curtains, she found a moving truck parked directly across the street. New neighbors…that property had been up for rent for about a month now. Shaking her head, she went to turn away from the window when something or rather someone caught her eye…Max Evans.

Throwing on a robe and slippers to cover up her Pajamas, Liz opened the front door to watch Max and Zan walk across the street towards her. “Good Morning!” She greeted when they started to climb her steps. “Good morning!” Max greeted with a small smile, looking absolutely sexy as always to Liz’s distress. She couldn’t take him this early in the morning…especially in the state of mind that she was in to drag him up to bed and to relieve some of the tension he had caused for the last eight years. She couldn’t help it…her mind was in the gutter…more now than ever. She was a woman…an alien of course…but still a woman and she hadn’t a warm male in her bed since she was seventeen. It wasn’t just the sex part that had been making her crazy lately but the intimacy afterward. She had never had that. She had read books, watched movies, watched television shows and, until today or rather a few months ago, hadn’t realized that she would never have it…if she didn’t move forward.

She wanted to move forward with Max. But she was afraid… sick of being afraid…but still afraid. “Hi Ms. Parker!” Zan greeted shuffling his feet as he waited in silence for his dad and Liz to snap out of their daze. Hearing Zan’s voice, Liz glanced down with a small smile. “Hi Zan come on in! Are you guys moving in?” She asked suddenly stepping back to allow them in as she inclined her head towards the moving truck. “Uh yeah.” Max replied a bit sheepishly. “I thought when you commented on the house that day…that you were just joking… but you’re really doing this?” She asked in shock. What would it be like to have Max living right across the street from her? Torture…agony…could she come up with any better words? “I mean if you have a problem…I know this kind of sudden…” “No-No I don’t a problem with you living across the street…I’m just a little shocked.” Liz laughed trying to get her bearings, as she watched Zan sit on the floor beside Amelia.

“So…do you want some coffee?” Liz asked nervously rushing into the kitchen. “No thanks…Liz are you sure you are okay with this?” Max asked, watching her with an intense concern. His main objective was to protect Zan…but when he had seen the house up for rent across the street he hadn’t been able to resist. This was a way for all of them to grow closer…to be together. “Okay with what?” Kyle interrupted suddenly as he took a sip of his coffee. “Max is moving across the street!” Liz replied, meeting his gaze head on in a blank stare. “Across the street huh? I guess you’re killing two birds with one stone huh Maxey boy!” Kyle replied teasingly. Max refused to answer that. He and Kyle had never been friends but now more than ever he wanted to deck him for pointing out the obvious. Yes, he admitted he wanted to get closer to Liz and next to moving in with her…this was the best way.

Giving Kyle a simmering glare, Liz gave Max a small smile. “Well I have nothing to do today…so do you need some help?” Liz didn’t know how she felt about Max being directly across the street. A part of her was excited at the knowledge of having Max so close but yet another part was terrified at the prospect of growing too close to him too fast. “Sure…we need all the help we can get!” He replied with a small shrug. “Okay…I have to go change but if you want we can start when I get back?” She asked, moving to leave the kitchen. All at once, Max grabbed her hand pulling her into him for a quick kiss. He couldn’t help it…couldn’t let her leave the room in fear of what was to come. The kiss was quick but erotic all the same. Breathing deeply Max let her go. Staring up into his eyes, Liz quickly blushed in embarrassment as she realized they were not alone. Not being able to resist, she gave him another peck on the mouth before quickly leaving the kitchen.

That night, Liz stood with Max in her kitchen making dinner. Amelia, Alex, and Zan were currently in the living room watching the cartoon Zoids. They had finished moving the furniture into the house surprisingly fast especially with Ava, Kyle, Michael, Maria, Isabel, and Jesse there to help. Stirring the macaroni, she watched out of the corner of her eye as Max shredded the cheddar cheese. Liz wasn’t looking so much at the cheese being shredded but Max’s bulging muscles working through his t-shirt. Her mouth watered in agony as his long fingers worked the cheese on the grater. Groaning, she turned back to stirring the pasta. This was how it was going to be from now on with him living directly across the street. Moments later after having drained the macaroni, Liz called Amelia and Alex. “Amelia…Alex come and set the table please.”

Running into the kitchen, Alex came up beside Liz. “Whoo-hoo Mexican Macaroni!” Grinning excitedly, Amelia went to climb the small ladder to the Cabinets beside Max. “Have you ever eaten Mexican Macaroni?” He looked up with at her with overwhelming happiness as he watched his daughter pull done five plates. “No but I’m guessing that it’s good.” “Oh it is… mom makes it so good!” Watching Alex and Amelia set the table; Max’s gaze then went to Zan. He was slowly but surely coming around to their moving. The change in Zan puzzled Max. He didn’t know whether to feel concerned or relieved at the turn of events. Things had changed so drastically in last past six months that Max was almost terrified to blink in fear of things going back to the way they were. Moments later looking around the table, he realized that this was wanted he wanted… a family with Liz and their kids. If he couldn’t have anything else…. He wanted them to be together!

**************************************

A Month Later:

Max sat at his desk staring down at the black box in his hands as if it would give him the answers to what he sought. He been working over time for the past month…loading up on cases so that he could buy this ring. There was no doubt in his mind that this was the right thing to do. He had fallen in-love with Liz in the third grade and to this day he still loved her. His love for her had at times overwhelmed him, confused him, feared him, and at times even angered him. Max felt a hunger in himself that he had never felt before…a relentless ache that had started a month ago and hadn’t gone away since. If not at work, they were together all the time but it wasn’t enough anymore.

They had started somewhat of a tradition where he and Zan would have dinner with them on the weekends. They spent time together as a family and as a couple. Max realized that when he had looked into Liz’s eyes and had no longer seen distrust or weariness that he had finally decided to make his move. For the last past six months, he had shown infinite patience when it came to him and Liz being together… especially last week when they had almost made love. But Max had realized then that she had once asked him for time and if he owed her anything…he owed her that. That had been the only reason that he pulled away from her with a quick kiss before running home to the cold water of his shower. Something inside screamed out to him that it was past time to do this… to ask Liz to spend the rest of her life with him. Each time he left her, Max was reminded of the fact that they weren’t together in the sense that when he stepped into his home she wasn’t there. When he lay in his bed, she wasn’t there.

The fact that Zan and Liz were getting along somewhat didn’t help Max’s cause to be patient and to give her time…to take things slow. It just increased the temptation more to ask her to become his wife. Opening and closing the small box, he stared into space as he wondered what she would say. His deepest fear was that she would say no and that he would somehow undo everything that they had become in the last past six months. His thoughts plagued him as he went through the day. Was this the right time to ask her? What if she said no? Would Zan be okay with the prospect of him and Liz getting married? Would Alex and Amelia be okay with it? Would Max be able to deal with the pain afterward if she said no?

Chapter 8:
A Few Days Later

Silence reined in the house as Alex, Zan, and Amelia ate breakfast. Max watched his kids in a brooding silence as he contemplated telling them of his plans. Studying each small face individually at his kitchen table, he knew exactly how they would each react. Amelia would become excited…squealing. Alex would become vocal with his anger…lashing out. And Zan would become distant…once again labeling Liz as the enemy. But despite knowing all of this, Max still intended to ask Liz to marry him tomorrow night. His emotions were turbulent as he thought about the coming events. But above all of the emotions was fear and excitement. He had been waiting along time for this…too long actually.

Watching as the kids stacked there dishes in the sink bickering, Max took a deep breath. It was time. “Alex, Zan, Amelia come have a seat. We have to talk!” More curious than anything, they sat down at their individual seats waiting. Taking a deep breath, Max set his jaw firmly before speaking. “We’ve been through a lot haven’t we? Together and a part…we’ll always be a family…but there’s one thing or rather one person missing from this table and she’s right a cross the street. I love each of you with every fiber of my being and that’s why I’m confiding this to you instead of just doing it!” He continued looking pointedly at both Alex and Zan. “Tomorrow night…I’m taking Liz to dinner…and I’m asking her to marry me!” Max finished, meeting Zan’s suddenly tear filled gaze.

Amelia suddenly squealed interrupting the silence before meeting Alex’s angered glare with an embarrassed flush. “What ever you have to say…now is the time to say it.” Max whispered meeting Alex’s glacial glare. “You can’t do this…your just gonna hurt her again and ruin everything!” Alex whispered. “That’s not true, Alex. Yes dad hurt mom but he’s sorry and they’ll be happy together, right?” Amelia demanded meeting her father’s intense gaze head on. Max smiled warmly nothing the warning in Amelia’s voice. “Right.” At that moment, Zan ran from the table knocking the chair over in a hurry as he ran upstairs to the room he shared with Alex. They watched in a tense silence as they heard a door slam. “Stay here!” Max whispered, moving away from the table to make his way upstairs.

They watched their father silently until he was out of sight before Amelia gritted out between clenched teeth. “You’re wrong…you know?” “No I’m right…what are you so stupid that you can’t see he’ll hurt mom. Yeah they were happy for a little while but it didn’t last. He’ll hurt her again, you’ll see!” “No he won’t…what are you so afraid of Alex him hurting mom or him hurting you?” “Shut up!” “No you shut up!” Voices rising, they glared at one another. “Shut up, Amelia!” “I hate you!” Amelia cried out running from the table. Alex sat there in silence as tears clouded his eyes. Just when he thought things were going back to normal this had to happen.

**********************

The next night, Max had escorted Liz into the Crash Down. Dressed comfortably in jeans and a yellow lace camisole, she watched Max in concern. She had had to pull conversation out of him all evening. He had tried to act as if there were nothing wrong but she knew better. They had gone to dinner at Senior Chow’s where they had eaten in silence and then they had danced. They had danced so many times in the past but this one dance had been different more intense…as if Max hadn’t wanted to let her go and vice versa. They hadn’t laughed and talked as they usually did. Liz was worried…something was wrong…very wrong. For the hundredth time, she asked if everything was okay. “Every things fine…listen can we talk somewhere Liz…private!” He asked intensely, nervousness and anticipation filling his hazel eyes. “Sure…come on let’s go upstairs!” She whispered with concern dragging him by the hand onto her old balcony.

“What’s wrong, Max?” She said suddenly a few moments later, interrupting the silence. “Every things wrong, Liz!” Max whispered turning to toward the wall where their fading initials were…. promising forever. “What’s wrong, Max? What happened?” Liz cried out softly, terror leaping from her brown eyes. “You did! Every since the first time I laid eyes on you. There hasn’t been a day that went past that I haven’t thought about you…that I haven’t thought about being with you!” Max stated somberly with a small smile gracing his lips as he turned to meet her gaze. “I thought about doing this for a long time. When I step onto your porch and you open the door I feel as if I’m coming home and when I leave…it’s unbearable because you’re home, Liz!” Frozen by his words, Liz watched as he touched the wall where their initials stood, making them glow.

Coming to stand in front of her, Max took hers hands gently. “I’m in love with you and I’ll be in love with you until the day I die. I want to be with you, Liz, forever!” Eyes filled with tears, Liz watched Max in awe and shock as he got done on one knee, pulled out a small black box, and opened it. “Max?” “Liz…will you marry me?” It felt as if her heart collapsed into her chest. Tears streaked down her face as she looked down into his handsome face filled with love and fear. The ring was a white gold band with three sparkling nice sized diamonds in its center…it was simply beautiful but her eyes were on him the whole time. Everything in her screamed yes but something wasn’t right. She couldn’t say yes without making sure that her kids and Zan wouldn’t get hurt in the process. No matter how selfish she wanted to be she couldn’t do that to them. “No! I can’t marry you! I’m sorry!” She whispered as more tears fell down at her face at Max’s devastated expression.

Max felt as if his heart had been wrenched out of his chest. She said no. Closing the small black box, Max climbed to his feet as he felt an intense burning sensation from behind his eye lids. Stuffing the box into his pocket, he took a deep breath before looking into her eyes which held so much pain. Blinking back tears, Max smiled sadly before whispering “Come on let me take you home!” Moments later, they were in his pick up driving along Main Street in silence. Moments which felt like an eternity later, Max pulled up in front of Liz’s house. She didn’t even wait for him to open his door before she climbed out hastily and ran into the house. Taking a deep breath, Max pulled into his driveway, cutting off the ignition before laying his head on the steering wheel as he silently cried.

In the house, Liz slumped against the door crying. It hurt…It hurt so badly. She had never wanted to feel this kind of pain again. It was overwhelming. She couldn’t forget the look in his eyes…the devastation. She didn’t hear Ava come down the stairs and sit beside her but she did feel an arm around her shoulder. “What happened, Liz? What did he do…the bastard?” Ava whispered as Liz cried harder. “He asked me to marry him!” She said, sobbing into her hands. Ava froze…her eyes widening. “And what did you say?” She asked already guessing what she had said. “I-I said no!” She whispered, crying silently once again. Alex and Amelia watched from the stairs crying silently as well as they realized that things would never be the same again.

A Week Later

Zan listened moodily as Liz gave the class their homework. He couldn’t get over it. His dad had asked Liz to marry him and she had said no. He didn’t know whether to fill relieved or angry. He had just started to like Liz…had been trying to get use to the idea of her being his step-mother and then she had said no. His dad wasn’t himself…he was a walking talking shell and Zan hated it. Liz was no better herself…she looked tired and wary. There was no sparkle in her eyes. She no longer looked at him and smiled…actually she didn’t look at him at all and he would never admit it to a living soul but that hurt. Zan wanted things to go back to the way they were when he and his dad use to go over to Liz’s house for dinner, or when he use to catch them slobbering over one another when they had thought the kids were occupied. Admittedly he wasn’t too happy about his dad proposing to Liz but he hadn’t wanted this to happen.

Writing out an assignment on the board, she felt like crying once again but that wouldn’t do. She needed to get control of herself and fast. She missed him…she missed what they had. It was hard to go from seeing someone daily to not seeing some one at all. She knew from Maria that he had had several out of town cases so it was nothing. But she knew that wasn’t true. He was avoiding her and she couldn’t really fault him. She could still see his eyes and knew he was hurting just as much as she was…maybe more. Taking a deep breath, Liz turned around to meet the class’s gaze or rather Zan’s gaze. She couldn’t help but feel she was back to square one where he was concerned.

Twenty minutes later, Liz watched as the class exited her classroom. After watching them go, she turned back around to meet Zan’s gaze waiting. “Why did you say no?” Liz froze at his question before sitting down at her desk. “Because I would be hurting the one’s that I loved if I had said yes!” “Amelia would’ve been happy!” “But what about you and Alex? Would you have been happy?” Zan shrugged. “I don’t know…I think we’d get over it though!” Liz was tired of beating around the bush. “Zan…do you want me to marry your father?” “I don’t know…no-yes…I like my dad happy and he isn’t that way…without you!” Tears started to fill her eyes again before she blinked them away in desperation. Liz watched as Zan made his way to the door. “I just want things to go back to the way they were…and if that means having you for a step mother…so what? Don’t make anything out of this…I like you a little and you make my dad happy…so maybe you two getting married won’t be so bad!” He whispered with a small smile before leaving stunned Liz to think things over.

That night sitting at the table with Amelia and Alex doing homework, Liz thought about what Zan had said. “Amelia…Alex I want to ask you something and I want you to be honest, okay?” She asked getting their attention. “Okay!” They both said together. “What do you think about me marrying your dad?” Amelia and Alex both froze glancing at one another before looking back towards their mother. “I think it’s cool!” Amelia whispered with a big grin. Liz smiled before turning her gaze to her son. “How about you, Alex?” Shrugging with anxiety, Alex looked down at the table. “I don’t know…I guess it will be okay!” He whispered before meeting his mother’s gaze. “I just don’t want you to cry anymore!” Smiling reassuringly, Liz gave him a warm smile before giving him a hug. “I’m not…I’m not!”

The next day, Liz stood nervously outside of Max’s front door. It was 5:30 in the morning; she couldn’t sleep for wanting to see him…to talk to him. Knocking on the hesitantly, Liz waited. The door was swung open suddenly startling her out of her thoughts. Looking up slowly, Liz took in long hairy muscled legs, a red bath robe, and a little bit of a glistening chest before swallowing hard and meeting his eyes. “Hey!” He whispered with a sad smile, his eyes wary. “Hi…can I come in?” “Sure.” Moving back to let her in, Max closed the door slowly before turning to meet her eyes. He didn’t want to admit that he had been avoiding her but he had. He had been dreaming about proposing to her most if not all his life and his worst fear had come true…she had said no. Max didn’t blame her but that didn’t stop it from hurting nevertheless.

“Do you want some coffee?” He said moving into the kitchen. “No thank you! I actually just wanted to talk…please don’t say anything until I get this all out!” She whispered pleadingly, looking into his eyes. “Okay!” He nodded. Taking a deep breath, Liz smiled sadly. “I had given up on there being an us a long time ago. I have loved you and I have hated you. I have sacrificed for you and if you asked me to I would do it again. I love you… I’ve been in love you with you for what seems like forever. There was a reason I said no that night and if you had asked I would’ve told you. It’s not because I don’t love you…or need you… or want you. It’s not because I don’t trust you or what we have or could have. It’s because I thought that Alex and Zan would be hurt. It’s because I couldn’t stand the thought of hurting them. It’s because it’s not just us anymore that we have to consider. I’ve talked to the kids and I’ve thought about it…and if you ask me again I’ll say yes!” Liz whispered, with eyes filled with tears, sadness, anticipation, and love.

Max stood frozen to the spot trying to register her words. Tears filled his eyes and this time he didn’t try to stop them. Before she knew what he was doing, he was across the kitchen kissing her ravenously. His large hands held her face gently as he made love to her mouth. The kiss being once e-motional and heartbreaking was now erotic… taking them to unknown heights of pleasure. Shuddering and groaning, Max’s hands traveled to her small waist before lifting her up so that she could wrap her legs around his waist. Liz’s hands traveled leisurely down his neck and back before wrapping her arms around him. Gasping…out of breath, Max looked up into Liz’s dazed eyes and grinned. “Liz Parker…will you marry me?” She grinned as well before touching her mouth to his. “Yes.” Putting her down gently, Max told her he’d be right back before sprinting upstairs as if his life depended on it. Moments later, he was back again with the small black box. Standing before her, he open it…slowly taking out the ring, as his hand shock, before taking her hand gently. Meeting her eyes, Max slid the engagement ring on her finger with a promise in his eyes of forever.

Chapter 9:
A Week Later

Liz opened the front door to find Maria, Michael, and the kids waiting on her doorstep. Smiling broadly, she ushered them in. It had been a week since Max had proposed and she had said yes…a week since they had both planned to tell their family the news of their being engaged over dinner. She didn’t know how they had managed to keep the news from spilling from out of all their mouths for so long but they had. Liz really didn’t know how to feel about her and Max being engaged to be married. She was excited and happy, yes, but there was the dread of the other shoe dropping that had her doubting what was to come. “So…may I ask what is this dinner is all about, Liz? Not that I don’t mind being here…but you’re holding out and your best friend knows it. Look at you…you’re practically glowing!” Maria stated suspiciously watching her friend closely.

“I’ll tell you after dinner…I promise!” Liz blushed, before leading them into the living room where her mother sat with Diane Evans talking while Max, Phillip Evans, and Kyle stood to the other side of the room quietly talking as well. Amelia, Alex, and Zan were upstairs playing a computer game. Hurriedly walking into the kitchen with Maria right on her heels, she went about checking dinner. Grabbing a spoon, Maria stirred the rice, muttered. “Let’s get this done…the sooner we eat the sooner I can know what the hell is going on.” Shaking her head, Liz watched as Ava start to set the table. “What is going on, yo?” Ava interrupted angrily. “Don’t think I don’t know you’ve been avoiding me all week!” She said accusingly. Looking guiltily to the floor, Liz bit back a smile before looking up in apology. “I know and I’m sorry…I’ll tell you guys what’s going on as soon as dinner is over, okay?” She asked meeting both Maria and Ava’s eyes while hiding her ring finger. “Okay, Liz Parker. We’ll wait but after dinner you had better spill!” Maria pointed with eyebrows raised teasingly. Liz just nodded and went to go gather everyone up for dinner.

Half an hour later, Liz met Max’s heated gaze that spoke volumes from across the room. Taking a deep breath, she traveled the distance towards him. It was time. Moving into his arms, Liz grinned with happiness as Max got everyone’s attention by clearing his throat…asking for their attention. “Do you want to do this or shall I?” He whispered in her ear grinning as well. “We’ll do it together!” She whispered looking up into her eyes before meeting those of their families. “We’ve been through a lot together, Max and I, and all of you along with us. We’ve had our bad times and we’ve our good times but through all of that we’ve always been connected to one another…we’ve always loved one another…you’ve been a witness to that!” Giving him a nudge that it was his turn, Liz grinned shyly at her family’s confused expressions. “Last weekend I asked Liz to marry me…for the second time and she said…yes!”

There was complete silence before Maria started sobbing loudly throwing herself into Liz’s arms. “Oh my god, Lizzie, you’re getting married!” At that point the crowd rushed at them with hugs and claps on the backs…congratulating them. Liz laughed…tears clouding her eyes as she hugged Diane Evans. “Okay everyone back it up!” Michael announced from the middle… clearing the crowd before him. Clapping Max on the back, Michael said, “Congratulations Maxwell!” “Thanks!” Max replied while watching Liz with intense emotion as she received hugs. Suddenly, Maria was giving her another hug before admiring Liz’s engagement ring when she asked, “So…when is the happy day?” “August 5th!” Liz answered, meeting Max’s gaze with excitement and love in her eyes.

“That’s three months from now!” Maria said, contemplating all that needed to be done in the next three months. Liz could actually see the wheels turning in her best friend’s head. Sighing, she sat down on the sofa to be bombarded with questions from not only Maria but Isabel, Diane, and her mother as well. Half an hour later, she was pushing her last guest out the door. Sighing, she dragged herself into the living room, plopping down into Max’s lap. “Can we elope, Max?” She whispered looking pleadingly down into his eyes. “Do you really want to do that?” He asked somberly, looking into her eyes with concern. “No…I want to walk down the aisle with our family there!” Liz whispered leaning down to give him a tender kiss. Looking up into his eyes, she smiled. “See its Maria, Isabel, and our mothers…that’s making me contemplate eloping. As much as I love them…they’ll probably drive me crazy up until the day I say I do!” Holding back his laughter at her comment, Max stroked her back in reassurance. “Everything will be okay… I promise you…Three more months and you’ll be Mrs. Evans!” He whispered, kissing her neck while waiting in anticipation for that day to finally come.

Two Months Later

Liz stood trying on her 9th wedding gown today. Sighing with dejection, she shook her head at Isabel, Maria, Ava, Diane, Nancy, and Amelia. This dress just wasn’t her. She looked as if she were Cinderella dressed for the ball. “Liz babe…it’s beautiful!” Looking for help and not finding any from the other women present. She shook her head. “It’s beautiful…but it’s not me! I’m sorry guys!” She said before turning around to enter the small room. Stepping back into her clothes, she couldn’t help but hear their murmurs. They were clearly annoyed that she hadn’t picked the first, the second, or the eighth gown they’d picked out. She was just so nervous and scared…her wedding day was a month from now and she wanted everything to be perfect. God help her she was turning into perfectionist…but dammit it was her wedding day. So why couldn’t everything be perfect.

Stepping out in the waiting room, Liz met everyone’s annoyed gaze and grimaced. “Let’s call it a day guys!” She whispered, grabbing her daughter’s hand with a reassuring squeeze. “Wait…Ms. Parker wait!” The small woman, Mrs. Boyd, who had helped her pick out her dresses called. Turning around, Liz waited as everyone else did. “We’ve found the perfect dress…just what I think you’ll like!” Ushering them back inside, she ran to the back and came back with the gown of her dreams…literally. She remembered that gown… remembered wearing it. That dream so long ago had been a premonition. Just as she remembered the gown was an exquisite white satin embossed with lace. The top was fitted…as the bottom flared out before her… The train was chapel material. It was simply… beautiful as if the gown were made just for her. “Liz? Whaddya think?” Ava asked while watching Liz with a small smile. “It’s beautiful!” She whispered, gently taking it from the woman so that she could try it on.

Driving back, Liz stared out into the desert thinking about all that they had to accomplish before the wedding. It had already been decided that it would be best if they had started house hunting again. So that they could all start anew as a family. Max was insistent upon it. It just wouldn’t be fair to pick up and move Alex and Amelia across the street and the same with Zan. Liz somewhat agreed. There was just so much to be done. They still had to rent the reception hall, pick out bridesmaids dresses, and order the flower decorations. They had sent out the invitations last month. So that was done…Liz thought going over her mental list of things to do. If you had told her over a year and a half ago that she was going to marry Max Evans…she would’ve thought you had gone insane. But here she was marrying the boy she had loved since that day so long along when he had saved her life. She would never forget what he said when she asked him why he had done it. It was you.

Later that night, she lay in Max’s arms watching him sleep. For the last few weeks they’d been having dinner together at his house. When dinner was over, she would try to leave but he would just kiss her soundly and ask her to stay. They had decided to wait until their wedding night to finally cement their relationship. It was hard at times…especially when he just got out of the shower to go to bed. His skin glistening… his touch just beckoning her to want more but they went no further than kissing. It was always the hardest in the morning…waking up in each other’s arms…sexual tension filling the air. Sighing she pushed his hair back away from his face. He was only wearing his boxers tonight because of the heat and she happened to be wearing one of his old t-shirts. Now was not the time to think about what she was thinking about which was straddling him… taking things a bit further.

Turning over to get her thoughts off of making love to Max, Liz thought about Ava’s weird behavior lately. She was more quiet than usual…more somber…withdrawn. She was working overtime again too. Liz had known that by accepting Max’s proposal two months ago that she would be putting her best friend in a bind. Ava couldn’t afford to rent the house across the street. Not to mention that lately, she had been spending more time with Max and Ava had been spending more time with Kyle. They hadn’t had an actual conversation in at least two weeks and that sadden Liz. She felt as if she were losing a friend and she couldn’t handle losing Ava. She planned on catching her tomorrow before she left for work so that they could talk.

The next morning Max awakened to find Liz in his arms, snuggled close. Smiling slowly, he gently pushed her hair from out of her face. The sun was barely up…so they had time to cuddle a little. This was what he had been missing for the past nine years. Max felt a happiness he hadn’t felt in a long time. Propping himself up on his elbow, he watched her sleep. Grinning at her small snores, he watched her for a few moments before he couldn’t resist kissing her awake. Kissing her tenderly on the mouth, he moved onto her eyelids whispering her name. Sighing with distress, Liz opened one eye. “Max?” “Hmm” “What are you doing?” “Waking you up…properly!” “Really…do tell?” Liz whispered before wrapping her arms around his neck…before moving her mouth up to meet his parted lips.

An hour later, Liz stepped into her house to catch Ava so that they could talk. She had left Amelia and Alex over at Max’s to finish their breakfast. She found Ava slumped in the kitchen eating cereal alone. “Hey!” She whispered. Ava looked up startled before giving Liz a small smile. “Hey…I didn’t expect you back!” “Well here I am…look at me, Ava!” Liz demanded. Ava obeyed with a brow raised. “I realized a long time ago that accepting Max’s proposal would hurt someone I cared about…I just never thought that-that would be you. I’m sorry!” “Listen cornball…there’s no need to apologize. I’m a big girl…I knew that someday you and Maxie-poo would go down the aisle and buy a house with a white picket fence. I just never realized I would lose ya’ll so soon…ya’ll the only family I have!” Guilt and sadness rode Liz hard. “We’ll always be family Ava…we’re not going anywhere…nothing has changed!” “Everything has changed, Lizzie. You’ll be a married woman in a month and I’ll be looking for a place to stay…don’t look so sad cornball…like you said we’ll always be family!” Ava whispered tears in her eyes. Liz just nodded with a sad smile…tears filling her eyes. Ava was right…things had changed.

Chapter 10:
Thirty-four Minutes Before The Wedding

Max looked at himself in the mirror as he adjusted his tie. He had to be at the Crash Down in twenty minutes. Trying to stay calm, he glanced at the clock again. He had been doing that for the past two weeks. He was marrying Liz in a matter of minutes and he still couldn’t believe it. Max had dreamed about this day for years but never had he thought it would come true. He was really getting married and to his dream girl. He wondered what Liz was thinking at that very moment? Was she scared? He hadn’t seen her in two days. Two days of pure hell. He hadn’t slept a wink last night for thinking about her…about them.

This was one of the most important days of his life and he was terrified…terrified of something going wrong…terrified of not being worthy of Liz. She was everything that he had ever wanted and yet was he everything that she had ever wanted? He had never doubted himself more than he did today… his wedding day. He knew without a doubt that Liz loved him but was he worthy of her love? He had done a lot of things to hurt her…to hurt them. His doubts were going to be the death of him. Swallowing hard, he took a deep breath as he donned his black jacket. Looking at the clock once again, he realized that only a minute had passed. Max couldn’t wait any longer. At that very moment, Michael entered his room in a rented tux.

“Let’s shake a leg, Maxwell. Maria not to mention your bride to be will kill me if we’re late!” Michael muttered, laying a palm on Max’s shoulder. Max glanced at the time again before meeting his best man’s gaze. “You have the ring?” At that moment, Michael started checking his pockets in a panic. “Michael, you do have the ring, right?” Max growled, terror and anger filling her eyes. Michael just grinned. “Yeah…yeah I got the ring!” “Alright let’s go!” He said, giving a sigh of relief. His hands shook slightly as he turned off the lights in his bedroom. Climbing down the steps behind Michael, Max ushered Alex and Zan out the door.

They had decided to say their vows at the Crash Down which had made a lot of people angry now that he thought about it. The Crash Down was significant in away to all of them because that’s where it had all started. They knew that their wedding was unconventional to say the least. In the passenger seat of his truck, Max looked nervously out onto the streets of Roswell. Michael sat behind the wheel whistling with a smirk on his face. The groom had been too shaken and nervous to drive. Max had it bad. Michael remembered his wedding day as if it was yesterday…and no way in hell did he remember being as crazy as Max was being.

They arrived at the Crash Down five minutes later. Max was actually shaking as he got out of his truck. Taking deep breaths, he stepped into the Crash Down where no more than twenty guests awaited. Everyone at that exact moment looked up to see the groom, his sons, and the best man arrive. Maria grinned with excitement as she excused herself from the priest. “You cut your hair?” She asked as she came to stand before them…her gaze examining Max’s new hair cut. It was cut short and neat making him look 19 again. How he could look 19 again and still masculine…Maria didn’t know. “Is it bad?” Max asked nervously as he tried to sneak a peek at Liz in the back. “No…not at all…It looks great. She’s upstairs Romeo so you can stop looking!” Maria scolded with a smile of approval gracing her lips.

“You look beautiful!” Michael smiled staring down at his wife. Maria smiled looking down at her lilac spaghetti-strapped bridesmaid’s gown. “Thank you…keep it up space boy…and I might let you take it off of me tonight!” She whispered before her eyes once again fell on Max who once again staring at door in yearning. It was time. Giving Max a wink, Maria went to get everything ready. Twenty minutes later, Max stood before the priest as he watched the wedding progress. Minutes later, their song I Shall Believe came on signaling Liz’s turn. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath before opening them again and that’s when he saw her.

She stole his breath away. Every emotion Max felt for Liz in that instance swelled within his heart. He had never felt so overwhelmed or terrified as he did at that very moment. Their eyes met and held as Sheriff Valenti gave her away. They both smiled softly at one another as they listened and said their vows. “ I, Elizabeth Ann Parker, take thee, Maxwell Phillip Evans, to be my lawfully wedded husband I, Maxwell Phillip Evans, take thee, Elizabeth Ann Parker, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.” “By the state of New Mexico and in the eyes of man and god…I now pronounce you man and wife…you may kiss your bride!”

Their kiss was sweet…clinging…filled with promise as tears glistened in their eyes. “I love you!” Max whispered against her soft lips as happiness and relief invaded his soul. “I love you too!” Liz replied with a small smile as everyone applauded and cried their happiness. At that moment, rice reined down on them. Grinning like fools, both Max and Liz faced the crowd receiving congratulations and hugs. It was quite some time before Max had Liz to himself again. As the limo traveled the distance to their reception, they snuggled together as best as they could…kissing and whispering how much they loved each other. Just as they were heating up, the limo came to a halt. Sighing, Max looked down into Liz’s daze eyes and grinned. “We’re here!”

Moments later they were bombarded by both family and friends. The reception hall was large. Up on stage a band started setting up while Amelia and Cherly chased Alex and Zan around the dance floor. Leading Liz by the hand, Max made his way to their table…stopping a hand full of times along the way to receive more congratulations and hugs. Sitting down, he noticed Liz’s wince as she sat down beside him. “What’s wrong?” “Heels…they’re killing me!” Liz whispered with a small smile. “Max…not here!” She gasped…looking around as he reached for one of her legs, turning her sideways to accommodate them both. Taking off her high heel, Max started messaging her small foot just as Maria and Michael sat down beside them. Calmly as if it were no big thing, Max continued to rub her feet as he and Michael got into a conversation. Blushing, she looked down before looking up to meet Maria’s gaze.

“Do I even want to know what’s going on under the table?” She whispered into her ear. “Shh nothing is going…he’s just rubbing my feet. I told you these heels were a size too small!” Liz blushed. “I said I was sorry for the last time, Liz. What was I suppose to do? They were the only ones that looked good with your dress and you look absolutely beautiful!” Maria explained with a small smile. “Being beautiful hurts.” Liz murmured before blushing some more as she met Max’s heated stare. Realizing what she felt under her foot…Liz tried not laugh. Their honeymoon could not come soon enough…speaking of honeymoon? “Maria, where are we going for our honeymoon?” “It’s a surprise!” Liz frowned as she watched her friend smile mischievously. She hadn’t been too keen on letting Maria decide where they went for their honeymoon and neither had Max. But her friend had been too adamant about planning their honeymoon…saying that it was wedding present. So she and Max had conceded defeat.

Twenty minutes later, Max held Liz in his arms as they started the dance as man and wife. There were no words to express what Max felt right now. Holding hand over his heart, he listened to the words of the song and thought about her. At that moment as if feeling his gaze, she looked up and grinned shyly. There were no words to be said to express how they felt about it each other because they already knew. Sighing, Liz leaned her head against his heart and listened…to the beat of his heart…to the words of the song. Suddenly flashes bombarded her…making tears come to her eyes in remembrance.

I've never tried this before, but maybe I can make the connection go the other way. So you can see, you know that, that I'm still me.

I've finally found the nerve to say
I'm gonna make a change in my life starting here today
I surrender all my love, I never thought I could
I'm giving all my love away and there's only one reason that I would...
And baby it's you

Max, who else knows this?

No one.

What about your parents?

We don't tell anyone. We sorta think our lives depend on it.

So when you healed me you risked all of this getting out didn't you?

Yea.

Why??

It was you.

The way you walk
The way you talk
The way you say my name and smile
The way you move me
The way you soothe me
The way you sleep softly through the night
Every morning you rise, and open your eyes
I just wanna be there with you baby
I just wanna be yours, from this day forth

It's all true, Liz. It's how I really feel. It's all just magic when I think about you.

Max, turn it off. Anyone can see.

And when I'm not with you...I go crazy.

Max.

When you're here...

Oh, Max. Please.

You're my dream girl, Liz.

Next year lets call this day our Anniversary
The day I put my heart in your hands and said that it was yours to keep
From this moment on say that you'll always be mine
'Cause girl when I'm alone with you there's only one thing that's on my mind...
And baby it's you

Me, too. I just wish that I could have stopped you from saving my life that day in the CrashDown.

Don't say that.

Max, the day that you saved my life, your life just ended.

No, that was the day my life began. Liz, when I was in that room, and they did what they did to me. You're what kept me alive. The thought of you. The way your eyes look into mine. Your smile. The touch of your skin. Your lips. Knowing you has made me human. Whether I die tomorrow or fifty years from now, my destiny is the same: it's you. I want to be with you, Liz. I love you.

The way you walk
The way you talk
The way you say my name and smile
The way you move me
The way you soothe me
The way you sleep softly through the night
Every morning you rise, and open your eyes
I just wanna be there with you baby
Just wanna be yours, from this day forth.....

I, Maxwell Phillip Evans, take thee, Elizabeth Ann Parker, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Hours later, both Max and Liz exited the reception hall with their family and friends not too far behind them. “I can’t believe you guys did this…Las Vegas…a four star hotel…for seven days?” Liz whispered in awe…tears filling her eyes. “Don’t cry, Lizzie, you both deserve this!” Maria choked back laughing. “Thank you!” Liz cried silently, Max just squeezed her hand in comfort before saying his thanks. “You guys better get going…you still have to change and your flight leaves in three hours!” Michael muttered, shaking his head. “Okay…we’re going…where’s Alex, Zan, and Amelia?” Liz asked looking in the crowd for her kids. At that moment they came running around the reception hall to stand right in front of them.

“Are you leaving?” Alex asked stuffing his hands into his trousers. “Yes…can I have a hug and a kiss before I go!” Liz laughed looking down into her son’s eyes. “Alright!” Alex sighed dejectedly with a twinkle in his eyes. After giving him a kiss on the cheek and a hug, she moved onto her daughter. “Will you bring me back something?” Amelia asked with a hug grin. “Yes now give me hug and a kiss before I go!” Liz whispered, smoothing her daughter’s dark hair into place. After having saying goodbye to Amelia and Alex, she turned to her step-son. “I’ll just take a hug thank you!” Zan muttered with a small smile. “As you wish!” Liz smiled, giving him a hug before whispering a thank you. “For what?” Zan frowned with curiosity. “For being you!”

Turning toward Max, she watched as he said goodbye to Zan, Alex, and Amelia. She smiled at their bond before watching Max turn toward her. Taking her hand, Max looked into her beautiful brown eyes with a small smile of tenderness before leading her to the limo. Waving goodbyes to everyone, they climbed in. Hours later, they were on a plane to Viva Las Vegas. Holding Max’s hand, Liz looked out the airplane into the dark of the night. She expected to wake up at any moment and find that this was all a dream. She was really a wife…Max’s wife. Grinning with joy that she couldn’t seem to suppress, Liz looked forward to getting her honeymoon started.
