The Martyr of Antar
Chapter 24
When they arrived at the recovery room, Doctor Davis asked them to wait outside. He opened the door and saw the nurse holding Michael’s wrist and looking worriedly at the scanner. She turned to him and breathed with relief.
- I was about call you! He’s burning with fever! The dilator’s thermometer seems to be malfunctioning. It registers a body temperature of 115º and the scanner doesn’t stabilize! -
Michael’s back was beaded with sweat, his breathing was laboured and he was shivering.
- When did this start? -
- Just before you came in. The warning buzz went on and everything went nuts! - She was very agitated. The doctor noticed the blood transfusion bag was full.
- Did you just start a new one? - The nurse nodded. He checked that it was the same blood type as the discarded one in the trash can.
- Get me a fresh one. It’s unusual, but it might be mislabeled. - The nurse nodded again and left. He went to the door and waved Max and Isabel in.
- He seems to be reacting to the blood. -
Max raised his hand towards Michael.
- He won’t need it anymore. - He assured the doctor.
- No Max! It will be suspicious! -
- You’re right. - Max said, frowning and pulling back his hand.
- Let me. - Isabel passed her hand down the length of Michael’s body and he stabilized, his temperature dropped to 99.3, sweat started to dry and his breathing returned to normal. Doctor Davis disconnected the IV and Isabel changed it from AB positive to O negative.
- It was definitely mislabeled. - He winked at Isabel.
- Ok, go out before she comes back. -
They were just out of the room when they heard the nurse returning. Doctor Davis received the fresh bag and started the IV without a negative reaction. He gave the nurse the “defective” one and asked her to have it checked and labeled correctly. She left the room quietly after smiling at Max and Isabel. Doctor Davis went to the intercom and pressed a button.
- This is Doctor Stuart Davis. My patient Michael Guerin is ready to be transferred to a room. Give me the number assigned to him. -
- That would be 203. -
- Is that the best you can do? -
- Well, the best one would be 207. -
- Is that one available? -
- Yes, but…-
- I’ll take that one, thank you. Sent me a couple of orderlies right away to recovery. - Without waiting for an answer, he turned it off. Two big guys in white arrived almost immediately. They slid Michael on the stretcher they brought in with barely a couple of grunts from the boy and as one wheeled him towards the room, the other one and the doctor took care of carrying the IV’s. Michael is writhing and moaning. Max looked at Isabel and then addressed the doctor.
- Is he alright? -
- He’s just sedated. Apparently he’s waking up slowly because of the drugs.-
- Oh, that’s normal in him. He usually sleeps like a log and doesn’t wake up easily. -
- Not good for a soldier, huh? - Doctor Davis said winking, making Max and Isabel chuckle.
They arrived at the room and it was gorgeous. They put Michael on the bed and get everything in place. The room was big, with a couch opposite the bed and three cushioned chairs. Max looked around and whistled. Isabel went “Wow!”
- First class, - doctor Davis nodded, - it’s on me, no problem. - He turned to Isabel.
- I’ve taken your lunch invitation seriously, my only problem is that I won’t be free until 2pm. I’m scheduled for 3 lectures. -
- It’s ok with me, I’ll be right here. - Isabel smiled coyly. The doctor turned to leave.
- Oh, I was forgetting, - he pulled out of his pocket a stack of cards, - your passes, 24 hours long. -
- Thanks. - Max actually spoke to his retreating back. Doctor Davis waved back without turning.
- Iz, what have we got ourselves into? - He asked her with a worried look in his eyes.
- Max, relax, Michael is healing, the doctor is on our side, what more can you ask for? -
- Yeah, I guess you’re right, I have no bad feelings, quite the contrary. -
- You see? It feels so right to me too. -
- I’ll get the others. - As he headed for the door, Isabel pulled up one of the plush chairs and sat by Michael, holding his hand.
Max walked to the waiting room and spotted them sitting quietly near the aisle.
- Hey! Michael’s in his room. -
They got up and went to him. Liz grabbed his arms and they kissed. Max smiled at her reassuringly and turned to the others.
- C’mon. -
- Have you seen him? Is he awake? - Maria couldn’t hold back any longer.
- He’s still kind of out but not for long according to the doctor. -
When they arrive at the room, they react just as Max and Isabel had,
- This must cost a fortune! - Maria observed.
- Michael’s doctor is Brody’s cousin - Max informed them.
- No kidding!
- Yes, he had told me about his coming here but he didn’t say he was a doctor. He gave me these for all of us. - He handed the pass cards around.
Maria went to Michael and pulled another chair opposite Isabel. She held his other hand.
- He looks ok, a little flushed, though. - She leaned over and kissed his cheek. Michael reacted to her immediately, he went: “mmm” and started stretching, to end up freezing and gasping in pain. Isabel and Maria got up hurriedly and moved closer to him, as the others rushed to their hurt friend’s side.
- Michael, keep still! - from Isabel and - Michael, don’t move, love! - from Maria simultaneously.
- Hell, it hurts! What did you do to me now? - The two girls looked at each other intrigued. Max, Liz, Kyle and Jim are looking at them just as intrigued.
- Isabel, are you alright? - Michael sounded very worried. Maria stared at him open mouthed. Isabel looked quite uncomfortable.
- Yes, I’m fine, Maria is here. - Seeing Michael had finally opened his eyes, she nodded towards Maria.
- What? - He was totally confused.
- “What”? Is that how you think of me? - Maria was disgusted by his reaction to her name.
- Maria! What are you doing here? - He looked in her direction absolutely surprised and disoriented. - Isabel! What? Is this a hospital? I’ve got to get out! How could you bring me here? Where’s Max? - Max opened his mouth to make his presence known but Isabel was faster than him.
- Michael, take it easy, I’ve fixed everything, we’re safe, it all began with the nightmare, I had it too! -
- Oh, that! - Maria nodded in understanding, - Come here, baby! - She knelt on the carpeted floor and wrapped her arm around his shoulders as she held his hand. - Everything’s ok, I’ll take care of you! - She bent over him and kissed him on the mouth.
When they finally parted, Michael looked at her with a mixture of love and anguish.
- Maria, we’ll be discovered, you must get me out of here! - Max decided it was time to make himself heard.
- Michael, the doctor is Brody’s cousin, he knows what we are, he’s on our side. He’s totally thankful because he’s Brody’s daughter’s godfather, and he had our picture from the Phoenix hospital. He was there when I healed her, he got you this room and will even pay for it. Please relax, man, you’re hurting yourself. -
They were all looking at Max, their eyes popping out of their heads. Jim cleared his throat and put his arm around Liz and Kyle approaching the bed. Michael seemed to be calming down some, partly because of Max’s words and partly because of the close contact with Maria. Jim squeezed his leg.
- Glad you’re better, son. -
- Same here, dude. - Kyle playfully tousled his hair. Liz kissed his cheek and just smiled down at him, her eyes brimming with tears. They all looked at each other, surprised by her reaction. The door opened and the nurse came in with a tray.
- I’m sorry, you must leave now. -
- No way, lady, we have passes. - Maria flashed her card in her face in her typical defensive mode.
- I didn’t mean the hospital, dear, just the room while I medicate him.-
- Oh, all right. - She eyed nervously the syringes on the tray. Max leaned by Michael’s face.
- Play along, the doctor has arranged for you to have harmless drugs so it won’t look suspicious. -
- Sure, man, it’s my ass, so you don’t have to worry. - Max noticed a little resentment in Michael’s voice but chose to ignore it. He squeezed his shoulder reassuringly and they stepped out of the room to sit on a bench in the aisle waiting for the nurse to do her business.
When they arrived at the recovery room, Doctor Davis asked them to wait outside. He opened the door and saw the nurse holding Michael’s wrist and looking worriedly at the scanner. She turned to him and breathed with relief.

Chapter 25
They sat ill at ease, looking at their feet as they waited, knowing whatever was going on in there, was causing Michael some kind of pain. Liz was still teary eyed, and Maria just couldn’t take it anymore.
- Ok, Liz, out with it! - Liz shook her head no.
- C’mon, chica, get it out of your system, it’s making you sick. I think we can share anything, right? -
- C’mon, Liz, what is it? Please, let us help you, we’re all friends here. - Max put his arm around her shoulder.
- Liz, we need to know. - Jim gave her one of those serious looks of his and that sent her over the edge. She was crying openly now.
- I saw these horrid flashes when I was in the ambulance…- Liz tells them what she saw in every shocking detail. When she finished, the men were looking upset and disgusted and Maria and Isabel were in tears just like Liz.- I knew. - Said Max, looking pale. - I would heal him when he came to me hurting, sometimes it was during the weekend and he came to my window, so I took him to my bed and did it there and kept him overnight.. Sometimes it was in the school bathroom before classes. And sometimes we simply couldn’t do it and the others would see him in the showers, but since he didn’t try to hide them and seemed quite nonchalant about them, no one suspected his foster father. Probably because the first time, that jerk Steve Graham told him in his nasty voice: “Ooooh, Michael has been a bad boy and has had his ass really kicked for it.” And of course, Michael just smirked and told him to try to live in his neighbourhood. And that was it. We all believed it, even myself, he had told me the bullies in the other trailers had it in for him, and knowing his attitude, I had no reason to doubt him. -
- Yes, I remember, I believed it too. - Said Isabel, drying her tears on her sleeves.
- We all considered him a bad ass punk. We kept our distance, because we knew he had beaten most of the bullies protecting Max, here, and we all knew he wasn’t afraid of anyone, obviously because of where he lived. - Kyle recalled. Jim shook his head and frowned.
- I had him all wrong too. Thought he was a smart ass and wanted to beat the crap out of him many times. -
They were silent for a few minutes until Maria started fidgeting and simply couldn’t take it anymore. -
- What the hell is she doing to him? She’s just taking too long! - She jumped up and opened the door, ready to give her a piece of her mouth. They were about to pull her away before she got them in trouble, when they noticed her eyes and mouth were wide open, and she was quiet, which was really weird. She slammed the door shut and sat back down still unbelievable speechless. It didn’t last long, though, she was Maria, after all.
- She had both her hands on his ass! I mean his ass! Not his butt, his ass, you know, right there! -
- She probably was checking his temperature, - Isabel tried to calm her down, - that thing he has sticking into him has a thermometer that you read in a little screen on the back tab. - Far from calming her down, it completely backfired.
- How do you know? You’ve seen it! - She was almost hyperventilating.
- Of course I have, the doctor did it at the Operating Theatre before they took him out. -
- Why is “that thing” sticking into him? -
- Doctor Davis said so he wouldn’t heal completely, you know, together?
- Oohhh! Gross! So he’s like those girls who use tampons! - She shuddered remembering - Michael saw me looking at a brochure of those things and told me never to use them. He was so upset, I don’t understand why! He made me promise. -
- He made me promise too. - Isabel said giving Maria a weird look.-
- He had a good reason, - Max told them, his voice shaking, - his foster father shoved them into him after he raped him so he wouldn’t mess up the sheets. If he wasn’t snoring drunk next day, he would pull them off himself, and if he was, I would do it. Of course, Michael said it was his neighbours pranks, and I bought it. - It was his turn to shudder.
- I’m afraid of them, I’ve never used them. - Liz said.
- I can’t understand how no one ever suspected his foster father. - Kyle wondered changing the unpleasant subject.
- Oh they must have. I saw him coming out of the principal’s office a few times and they were laughing and all chummy, so his excuses must have been convincing. I heard they had been classmates, so maybe that’s what did it. - Max remembered.
- That bastard! - Maria exclaimed and they weren’t sure to which one it was directed. Just then, the door opened and the nurse stepped out. She glared at Maria, upset by the interruption, and Maria glared back.
- I don’t like her! - Maria muttered as they went back to Michael. They were dismayed to find him writhing and moaning, quite sore.
- Oh baby, what did that bitch do to you? - Maria was all over him.
- She stuck me two that spewed fire inside me. I’ll never sit up straight again! - Michael complained.
- That took her so long? - Maria was immediately suspicious of the woman’s intentions.
- She also checked the needles in my thighs and the…- he winced, - thing up my ass. And she massaged me, -
- WHERE?! - Maria was getting very pissed.
- Over the injections, it did make it a little better, not much though, still hurts like hell…-
- I read in one of the books from the first aid lectures I took, that massages did help, because the heat from the hands warmed up the area and helped the drug get absorbed faster and easier.- Liz sounded so professional.
- Massage it is! - Maria said and sat on the bed placing both hands on Michael and started kind of squeezing the sore area. Michael’s breath was hissing through his teeth and Maria felt him go real tight.
- Hey, relax, I’m trying to make it better, you heard what Liz said. - Liz shook her head.
- That’s hurting him, Maria, let me show you. - She sat on the other side of the bed and pushed Maria’s hand away. She started massaging him gently with the heel of her hand and Maria started doing it like Liz on her side. Gradually Michael started relaxing. He sighed and lay still. Soon Liz noticed Max was looking at her with what she interpreted as jealousy in his eyes. At first she ignored him, as she was enjoying the feeling of the warm flesh under her hand, something that was out of the question with Max, due to anatomical differences, but she began to feel uncomfortable, so she raised her hand and shook it.
- I’m getting a cramp, I’ll have to stop. - She heard Michael give a disappointed groan and she knew the feeling had been shared. It made his warmth, still on her hand travel up her arm like that night at his apartment a couple of days ago. Isabel rushed to take her place.
- I’ll go on. - She said and continued what Liz had been doing. She went to sit by Max, a little resentful about the way he had got his way and taken her away from Michael. She sat there watching Maria’s and Isabel’s hands soothing Michael’s pain and she couldn’t help wondering if it felt the same as when she was doing it. They hadn’t realized how much time had passed until the door opened and Doctor Davis walked in.
- Well, I see someone’s having a good time for a change! Very well deserved, I may say so, too! - He chuckled, as he went to check out his patient. He saw that Michael was definitely half asleep as the drugs started to kick in, so he went to sit on the couch with Max.
Isabel got up and sat between them rubbing her tired hands. Maria took over with both hands.
- I don’t know why, but that nurse looks familiar to me. - Maria observed.
- Hey, you know? You’re right, she does…- Isabel agreed and Max nudged her with his elbow.
- Don’t stoke the fire. - He muttered. She got up glaring at Max.
- Well, she might be a skin! Shouldn’t we be wary? -
- What’s a skin? - The doctor asked intrigued.
- They’re our enemies. They wear some kind of husks that look human and they’re their second skins, enabling them to cope with the earth’s atmosphere. The meanest one of them is the one that attacked Michael. - Doctor Davis nodded.
- From what I’ve heard, she has worked here for ages. Everybody knows her. - He assured them.
- It could be a shape-shifter then. - Isabel wanted to get away with something, no matter what. The doctor looked even more confused now. Isabel hooked her arm around his and stood up, heading for the door.
- You take care of that then, and of Michael. - she continued, and turning to the doctor, she said to him - I’ll tell you all about it. - as she dragged him willingly along with her. Maria grinned with delight. She could hardly contain herself until they left.
- I think someone’s considering a divorce. - She giggled and Liz joined in. Jim motioned to Kyle who went to stand beside him.
- Well, I think Michael is in very good “hands”, - making Maria start giggling again, - so I guess I’m taking Kyle here to school and to inform the principal of Michael’s “accident”, putting in a word for you all, so you’ll have no problem going back to classes tomorrow. - He got a round of “good-byes” and “thank yous” and they left.
They sat ill at ease, looking at their feet as they waited, knowing whatever was going on in there, was causing Michael some kind of pain. Liz was still teary eyed, and Maria just couldn’t take it anymore.

Chapter 26
Barely a minute after the Valentis left, the door opened again and Isabel and Doctor Davis came in.
- The cafeteria is crowded with the people attending the lectures so we have a 20 to 30 minutes wait. We may as well be here. - He said. He went to sit with Max and Liz on the couch. The door opened again and Kyle came in.
- What happened to you? - Isabel asked him.
- I told dad I wanted to be with you guys, and he said it was ok. He doesn’t need me to speak to the principal. -
Isabel went to Michael and kissed his cheek. Her hair fell over his face. He knew the scent of her cologne.
- Isabel…- he whispered.
- Hey, I thought you were asleep. -
- I’m sleepy but not there yet. Weren’t you girls massaging me or do I have to call the nurse…- he stopped realizing his mistake but it was too late. Maria spanked him hard making him gasp.
- No way that woman is getting her claws into you! -
- Shit Maria! You can’t imagine how sore I am…-
- I’m sorry love, I just get so jealous…- she said sounding and looking regretful.
- They’ve been sticking me non stop for hours since I got here…-
- Michael, you’ve been asleep! -
- No, Iz, not really, rather drugged, I could hear and feel everything but I could hardly move, couldn’t even open my eyes or speak, and when I finally could, they drugged me again. Then I started burning all over, and I heard you, and it went away. -
- It was your blood, Isabel changed it into human so you wouldn’t be discovered, and it started returning to normal, so Isabel changed it again. - Max informed him.
- I don’t know how long it holds, but I’ll be here when you need me. - She assured him. He sighed and snuggled into the bed, getting more comfortable. - Oh well, I guess the drug is really kicking in. I hope he can get some rest. - Isabel went on.
- At least it takes the pain away. - Liz said.
- I don’t think so, drugs seem to work different in him, I don’t know why. - Isabel sounded confused.
- They sure do! He had one hell of a time at the operating theatre. My anesthetist was going crazy cause nothing worked at all. He even tried local and gave it to him in 6 places all around the…point of entry. Local is quite painful, but it’s worth it once it takes effect, only in him it did nothing but add to his suffering. - As he spoke, Isabel couldn’t recall seeing what he was saying, so she came to the conclusion that it had happened when she was interrupted and had to focus again, which took her a few minutes. He continued telling them how his colleague had managed to immobilize him with this effective trick he had learned he couldn’t recall where, but still couldn’t block the pain away. -
- Yeah, it was…- Isabel’s glare stopped Maria just in time before she gave it away. - It must have been terrible! - she corrected herself just in time, noticing the funny look she got from the doctor. But then he seemed to give it no importance.
- The rod had to come out, and even still, it took me 3 hard yanks to get it all out. Then I had to cauterize all the wounds he had inside, and that’s done with electric shocks. I felt real bad! -
- I felt worse, it was my ass after all…- His voice was husky from the drugs. Liz rushed to his side, by Isabel and took his hand, squeezing it with hers.
- That’s so cruel! - She exclaimed, and the silence that followed confirmed they all agreed with her, but it had been necessary. The doctor cleared his throat, trying to put the unpleasant experience behind, visibly feeling uncomfortable.
- Well, I guess we should be able to get a table by now. - He got up and addressed everyone but Michael. - Would you guys care to join us? He really needs to sleep and we’re not making it easy for him. He’s been through enough, so let’s give him a break. C’mon. - He hooked his arm around Isabel’s and headed for the door. Everyone followed them except Maria who stayed sitting beside Michael, holding his hand.
- I’ll stay with him, I’m not really that hungry. - She looked a little pale. She turned to Liz, - Just bring me some soup, and coffee, ok? - Liz nodded, and they left.
- You ok, spaceboy? - she leaned over and kissed the corner of his lips. He turned and deepened the kiss. Then he took a deep breath and relaxed. Maria tucked her legs under her, and leaning over the arm of the fancy chair, leaned her head on Michael’s shoulder. She felt him kissing her hair and she smiled. He somehow managed to convey this thought to her through the connection of their skin contact: He would take anything no matter what, as long as she was there for him.
The table they got was large enough for all of them. The waitress rushed to them recognizing the doctor. They ordered and when she finished taking all down, Doctor Davis told her it was all on him. Liz ordered the take out for Maria. Her salad was ok, but like her friend, she seemed to had lost her appetite. She picked at her food, eating a little more than half the platter, and after a couple of sips of her cherry coke, Maria’s bag arrived.
- I better go check on her, just in case the nurse in charge of Michael makes her appearance, and who knows what could happen. - She forced an unconvincing smile and left in spite of Max’s protest. As she was crossing the door, the said nurse went in just before her. She smiled at her very convincingly and Liz couldn’t help smiling back. She looked definitely familiar. Once just outside the cafeteria, Liz turned to Max who gestured her to come back with his head, but Liz just shrugged and left.
When she arrived at the room, she thought they were both asleep, so she tiptoed to the chair Isabel had placed on the other side of the bed. As she sat down, Maria raised her head from Michael’s shoulder and sat up.
- I got you a veggie on rye sandwich that looked real yummy and a cherry coke. Ok? -
- Sure, sounds great. In a sec, ok? - Maria smiled and Liz nodded, smiling back. Maria got up and beckoned Liz to follow her to the couch. They sat snuggled together, lost in their thoughts. Maria noticed the way Liz was looking at Michael, finding it disturbingly full of … love? It didn’t make sense, those looks were exclusively for Max.
- Liz, are you all right? - Liz blushed guiltily at being discovered and turned to look at her hands.
- Liz! Don’t tell me you still…- Maria didn’t know how to go on.
- He was our crush Maria. Don’t you remember that first time we saw him at the yard, this chunk of a kid with his rather tight clothes, which he had totally overgrown, defying anyone to dare pick a fight with him, full attitude, what was it we said to each other? -
- I’d do anything for a chance to tame him down! - They said together, giggling at the memory.
- Yeah, he was the mystery kid, who kept everyone away, but two days later, he was eating with Isabel, and hanging
out with her and Max, and that was it. No one got near Isabel unless she allowed you, and she was the queen of snob, so we had no way through her. - Maria remembered.
- And Max! I was ready to puke every time he stared at me with those miserable looking eyes. I just couldn’t stand his lank hair that was always the same and still is, his funny pointy nose and the Dumbo ears. We avoided him like the plague! He was such a scrawny geek! - Liz shuddered.
- Well, so was Alex, but he was fun, not shy and withdrawn like Evans the Ghoul. Then there were the fights, and Michael stood out for Max, while he cringed, hiding behind him. I found it funny how all the bullies couldn’t take Michael down, even though he was much younger. We just drooled over him, and the “trailer trash” thing made him all the more interesting. - Maria scoffed and shook her head.
- Silly Alex made it even worse saying he saw him at the showers and he was constantly bruised and cut. And then he innocently told us about his cousin who was then in the Navy but had graduated from West Roswell, and how he had told him there were these holes in the small back paint deposit room, that they used to watch the girls showering, “and now it has become the boy’s bathroom, what a waste!” - Liz recalled sadly, Alex’s words.
- We almost got caught a few times by old Mr. “what’s his name” janitor who was so stupid to believe each time, we were playing hide and seek, and we kept using that place because no one looked for us there. - Maria laughed.
- We watched him so many times and then we sneaked into the nurse’s that day he was stabbed high up in the back of the thigh by that stupid jock, Kyle’s friend who was kicked out of school for it. That was really something! She had hitched up the leg of his shorts so high up that half his ass was bare when we came in so innocently, just wanting to know if he was alright. We almost gave her a coronary! - Liz rolled her eyes.
- The stupid bitch chased me all the way to the gym before she realized you had stayed behind and went back to scream you out of the room. I hated you! - Maria said in mock anger.
- He let me touch his wound and his butt where the nurse had stuck him a tetanus shot before she came spitting fire like a dragon. I almost got the coronary then! - Liz sighed.
- But then when we saw her eating lunch at the cafeteria, you went to sit with her to apologize, and I sneaked into the infirmary and he let me do it too. The resounding very fake sneeze you gave behind her as she was about to turn the corner and catch me made me run for it just it time. I was laughing my head off and Michael just said you were nuts. -
- She jumped sky high and almost caught me as I raced past her to catch up with you. She was furious! - They sat in silence, enjoying their memories.
- What is it with Max, Liz?
- What do you think, Maria? -
- Well, you’re soul mates, he’s the perfect boyfriend, he always does and says the right things, you’re both so in love!-
- Apart from the fact that it’s getting kind of boring, I still can’t forget or forgive his two timing me with Tess, or the fact that he was ready to leave with her to their planet and leaving me behind like dirty laundry. When Michael came out of the Granalith chamber, I was so jealous, not because it wasn’t Max, but because he wasn’t staying for me, just for you. What else he needed to do for you to get it through your thick head how much he loves you. He’s always been just yours, what better boyfriend do you need? He’s always been trying to protect you, sacrificing himself to your lack of understanding and taking it out on him for his care for you. We always loved his bad boy attitude, yet now you want to turn him into your personal programmed robot, like Max is, you can’t imagine how frustrating it is to always know what his every reaction will be. Believe me, if it were possible, and we could shape shift, I’d gladly switch with you. My problem is that in spite of everything, I owe Max my life. I sometimes wish it hadn’t happened at all, so I could move on and stop feeling trapped. -
- Why are you feeling trapped? - The male voice made them both jump, their eyes popping out of their heads with fright. To their relief it was Kyle, who had entered the room first and caught Liz’s last phrase. Max was right behind him and she was sure he has heard as much as Kyle had. Liz thought quickly and got a reasonably believable answer, just as they walked to the couch..
- Oh, my job at the Crashdown, I owe my parents, and I’ll eventually inherit it so I’m stuck with it unless I sell it, which would break their hearts because it’s been in dad’s family for so long. -
- Oh. - Was all they said, and proceeded to sit down on the couch.. Isabel and the doctor were nowhere in sight. Michael was still fast asleep, as far as they could see.
Barely a minute after the Valentis left, the door opened again and Isabel and Doctor Davis came in.

Chapter 27
Isabel sat sipping a chamomile tea, while Doctor Davis watched her quite amused.
- So I’m right? Chamomile is an excellent digestive? - He nodded and she continued. - No wonder it always works for me, and believe me, mom’s cuisine gives you a dire need for the most effective digestive possible. -
- Sounds like my mom. - He chuckled, and she joined in.
- I don’t mean to pry, but how are things with your husband? - Isabel grew serious and shook her head.
- I truly thought I was so in love, but lately, I’m afraid I just wanted someone there for me like Max and Michael had. Everyone told me so, but I just got stubborn, I hate to admit it! - He reached over the table and took both her hands in his.
- Isabel, if you ever need me, I will be here for you. I know about you so there are no surprises. I accept you as you are and I like what I see. Not only you but your family and friends. The tragedy that made me meet you has also given me a close attachment to Michael. He’s the worst patient I’ve ever had…no, that came out completely wrong, that’s not how I meant it. He’s the most difficult case I’ve ever had but he’s the best patient I’ve ever really had. I don’t think anyone else would have been able to take what I’ve put him through. You can’t imagine how much I respect him for his courage and endurance. I never thought I would have to pull out a metal rod out of a kid’s ass without anesthetics and have to tie him up with drugs to do it. And cauterize him on top of all, under the same conditions! I have nightmares about it, you know? - Isabel scoffed.
- Michael has given quite a few nightmares to those around him, believe me. -
- He seems like a great guy. - He sounded rather confused. Isabel sighed.
- You may as well know this, as all our friends already know, and it will help you understand us better. Do you have time? It may take a while. -
- I’m done for the day, and the cafeteria is open 24/7. -
Isabel tells him how they arrived in this world, their coming out of the pods, and how Michael didn’t seem to trust them at first. How they saw the lights coming from the highway, how Michael had immediately reacted pulling at them and hiding behind the rocks, trusting they were behind him. He hadn’t counted on their freezing in fright and getting taken away. His protective instincts had backfired on him and he had ended with that drunk abusive foster father who beat him and raped him and Michael took all the suffering and torture without complaining, to protect them from discovery. He had learned to be tough from a very young age and according to her brother Max, that was Michael’s attitude: “I’m here, deal with me.” He had been there for them at school protecting them from bullies and nasty characters who dubbed her “Ice Princess” because she was so choosy with her friends, always the most popular, and never alone. Max on the contrary, had him as his shadow, being shy and quiet, he was the perfect target for the bullies, who had to deal with her, at first, as the screaming sister, until Michael appeared, and now she had a life without having to take care of her geek of a brother. She told him about the Liz incident, about Michael and Maria’s weird relationship, about Kyle, Alex and Tess and the baby. About their constant flight from the FBI, about Jesse, and her terrible truthful dreams of their previous tragic lives, which she had shared with Michael. By the time she was done, the doctor had been totally briefed on their out of this world lives. He would not need explanations about what they meant during their conversations, except, perhaps, for a few detail she may have left out, not for lack of importance but for shortness
of memory. He was dead serious when she stopped talking. His eyes showed an amazing amount of sympathy for their uncomfortable situation. He leaned over again, and kissed her forehead. Isabel closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened them, he was still staring at her, his eyes full of understanding.
- Isabel, I’m so sorry you had to go through all this alone, you really need someone to stand out for you apart from Max and Michael, someone of your own who won’t feel freaked out by who you are. -
- Doc, I…-
- Stuart, Isabel, my name is Stuart, and you should be calling me that by now, don’t you think so? - She smiled.
- Stuart, I thought Jesse would give me that, being older, that he would have the maturity and experience that I might be lacking, but he doesn’t seem to have it. -
- Sometimes age doesn’t get you there, you know? How old is Jesse? -
- He’s 27. And I’m 18, going on 19. I thought there was a lot of difference in ages. -
- Well, I’m 29, going on 30. I hope you don’t think I’m too old. - She started laughing, good naturedly and he couldn’t help laughing with her. She pulled one of her hands from between his and placed it over his. She liked the way he looked at her. Like she was the only woman in his universe, not frowning of disgustedly as Jesse did lately, when he thought she wasn’t looking at him.
- So Michael was your man in this other life…- she nodded, - you must have felt very secure and protected, so what happened in this one? -
- We thought he was our brother. I guess that’s what changed everything. -
- Quite possibly. It would feel like incest to you, right? - She nodded again and decided it was time to change the subject before it got more involved.
- We better go check on Michael, his blood problem, you know. -
- Right! - They got up, Stuart still holding onto one of her hands and went to the counter so he could sign his bill. They walked slowly to Michael’s room, feeling pleasantly relaxed. They opened the door to find Michael, of course, fast asleep, Liz and Maria slumped on the chairs at both his sides, their heads pillowed on his shoulders, and Max and Kyle, slumped on both ends of the couch, everyone catching up on a much needed sleep. They looked at each other, and Isabel tiptoed to Michael and passed her hand over his body to boost up his blood change. Then she went to the bathroom. Stuart sat on the only chair left and watched them separately to his heart’s content without making them feel funny. Isabel came out and was considering sitting between Max and Kyle, quietly, without waking them up, when the door opened and the nurse came in with her tray. Although she stepped in quietly, the door closed automatically behind her on a spring and the now loud “click” woke everyone up.
- I’m so sorry…I have to…-
- It’s alright, we’ll be out in a sec. - Max said taking charge and covering a yawn with his hand. He proceeded to get everyone out having to pull a very reluctant Maria almost forcefully. Stuart, who was of course, staying in the room, managed to hear the last of Maria’s tirade:
-…and now that I know she’s going to pull that thing out of his ass and push it back again I’m really…- the door closed, effectively blocking the rest of her words. Stuart looked at the nurse as she rolled her eyes at him making him laugh.
“The girl is a handful,” he thought, “with Michael’s description from Isabel, sparks must definitely fly when they are together”. The nurse was very professional and efficiently carried out what she had to do. Michael might have an attitude but he took it all with a few moans and gasps and starts. She took her time with the massage after the injections and when she thought it was enough, she tousled his hair and patted his cheek.
- There you go, kid, your girlfriend will massage your ass off. - She chuckled.
- Thank you, Susan. - He smirked. - She sure will, still I’ll miss your hands. -
Stuart raised his brows at her and she beckoned him to the bathroom. As she washed her hands, she whispered in a conspiratory way.
- I met him here a couple of years ago when the one with the ears was brought here with a goose bump the size of an egg on his forehead from a steering wheel. He came on to me on a most charming way, of course I told him to come back when he turned 18. Last night, when he woke up in recovery, he informed me he now was legal. - She shook her head, smiling. - Cute kid, but out of my league. My daughter in college is older than him. - Stuart nodded, smiling too.
Chapter 28
As the nurse left the room followed by Stuart, Maria jumped to her feet ready for the kill. Max and Kyle flanked her with amazing speed, hooking their arms in hers and covering her mouth with both their hands. They dragged her into the room as Stuart and Isabel laughed out loud, ignoring the SILENCE sign on the wall. They rushed into the room as Isabel shook her head and looked at Stuart smiling.
- She’s so hyper when it comes to Michael! -
- Well, I have to go home, take a shower and dress up because I’m taking Brody to dinner and a heart to heart, for old times sake’s unending chat. I’ll drop by when it’s over to check him out, ok? -
- Sorry for overhearing, but Brody doesn’t know about us, and I don’t think he’s quite ready yet. - Max told Stuart.
- I think you’re right, I agree completely. Don’t worry. -
- Thanks. - Stuart nodded and turned to Isabel, jokingly.
- Is he always so serious, he sounds like my grandfather. - Isabel laughed as Max blushed a deep shade of red, ears included.
- That’s our responsible king! - Stuart kissed Isabel’s cheek and it was her turn to blush. He ignored it completely and turned at the door to say goodbye, getting a general “goodbye, Doc”.
- Stuart, please, now you’re making me feel like my grandfather. -
- Ok then, goodbye, Stuart. - accompanied by some waves. He smiled and closed the door.
- Max please, could you get me some coffee from the machine? - Asked Liz.
- I guess I’ll need some too, pleeeaaasssee? - whined Maria.
Max nodded and started leaving the room as Kyle caught up with him and they left together. When they returned and were about to enter the room, they heard what seemed like Liz and Maria arguing heatedly. They burst in to find them each yelling at their cell phones, and Isabel coming out of the bathroom. Liz finished first, seconds before Maria, they both looked upset.
- Dad wants me at the Crashdown right away with Maria. - Liz announced.
- Mom doesn’t want me to stay here overnight. - Maria pouted.
- Amy’s quite reasonable, she doesn’t want you in jail. - Kyle looked smug.
- What the hell are you talking about, Kyle, do make sense, will you? - Maria wasn’t amused at all.
- You’d probably kill the nurse. -
- Oh, yeah, right. -
They ended it up so seriously that they had the other three cracking up with laughter. Liz wiped the tears from her eyes and turned to her sidekick.
- Maria, dad really needs us, he’s covering for us and going crazy! -
- Yeah, sorry, he’s right. We’ll have to go. - She went over to Michael and kissed the corner of his mouth. Michael stirred and whispered her name. That really made her day. She covered him with kisses, tousled his hair and whispered to him:
- I love you, spaceboy, sleep tight for me, huh? - Michael sighed and smiled.
- Did you see that? Did you hear him? I’m definitely on his mind! - She beamed at them happily, hooked her arm around Liz’s and dragged her towards the door.
- Maria, wait, let go a sec. - She pulled herself free and went to Michael to kiss his cheek. Then she pecked Max’s and Kyle’s cheeks too, waved at Isabel and joined Maria at the door. Kyle decided he had better join them and give the three aliens some much needed privacy. He said something about the girls needing some help at the Crashdown and took off after them. Max and Isabel looked at each other and shrugged
They stared at Michael who seemed to be sleeping almost quietly for a change.
- Any more nightmares? - Max asked his sister, concerned.
-No, none, I guess Nicholas is really dead. -
- You saw the body dust away? -
- No, it didn’t, his husk was different, he had to use the best and latest technology so maybe it was the nearest to human possibly. The airtight valve was at the base of the skull. Valenti’s bullet shattered it completely, leaving no evidence of it. Somehow I knew about the different location, don’t ask me how. Jim is trying to find out about the body, but they didn’t seem to need and autopsy as the cause of death was quite clear. I id’d him as Whitaker’s brother, whom we met when we went to Copper’s summit. Anyway, I’m glad to be rid of the nightmares. -
- Why didn’t I get them? I don’t understand .- Max looked absolutely frustrated.
- Michael and I were a couple then. That would explain it. -
- But Michael and I…- Isabel interrupted him with an angry hiss.
- Don’t…go there, Max, please! - He hung his head and nodded with closed eyes.
- Do you think Stuart will screw up with Brody? - He asked with a quick change of subject.
- No, he won’t. We had a long chat after lunch, and I assure you he’s completely reliable. He now knows where he’s standing, as far as we are concerned. -
- What did you tell him? - Now Max sounded worried.
- Everything, or at least all I could during the time we had. -
- Isabel, I’m still not quite sure…- Isabel silenced him with her glare.
- I am! And lately, in spite of the nightmares, I’ve been in closer touch with reality than you have been. Running after a phone call without making sure it was legit, really, Max, not very responsible, like the image you like to sell to those stupid enough to buy it! - She was totally pissed, and Max resorted to another change of subject, which seemed to be working for him so far.
- Do you like him? - Quite straightforward. Isabel nodded looking somewhat guilty.
- Do you think Jesse…- She cut him short again. -
- Jesse doesn’t need to know what doesn’t concern him! - Hurriedly.
- He is your husband, Isabel. -
- So now you’re on his side? You keep away from my married life! That’s my problem and I’m the one who’s handling it! - Her reaction shocked him, hinting they might be going through some problems which shouldn’t concern him at all.
Max was a loss for words when an unexpected visit came to his rescue: Their parents pushed the door open and let themselves in. They noticed the tense atmosphere and thought something was wrong with Michael.
- Oh my god! Is he alright? - Diane exclaimed, rushing to Michael’s side without waiting for an answer. Philip followed his wife, looking worriedly down at the sleeping boy. Isabel put her arm around her mother’s shoulder, noticing the tears running down her cheeks, while Max stood beside his father.
- They’re keeping him sedated, because he is in a great deal of pain…- Michael chose that precise moment to writhe and moan.
- He seems to be hurting, shouldn’t you call a nurse or a doctor? - Diane said rather agitated, full mother mode.
- Mom, mom, it’s alright, the doctor says he has some kind of resistance to the drugs they’re giving him, so he’s trying different ones to find the most suitable. They put him to sleep but they don’t control the pain. They’re doing their best, the doctor is Max’s boss’s cousin and he’s very good. - Isabel was very convincing but Diane kept crying.
- How could they do that to him! Who was that beast? - Now she sounded so angry.
- We’re not sure why, mom, but he was the late congresswoman Whitaker’s brother. He must have been affected by her death and came here to take some misguided revenge. Michael just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sheriff Valenti shot him dead in the head, so we’ll never know. - Diane continued sobbing, and placed her hand on Michael’s shoulder. He snuggled, smiling at the warm touch but ended in a wince and gasp.
- Oh, it’s not fair! He’s gone through so much! That beast of a foster father and now this! He should have been with us! - Diane couldn’t take it any longer and went to sit down on the couch. She reached out her hand to her daughter and she came to sit beside her while Max and their father sat on the chairs. Isabel hugged her mother to her and Diane started calming down some. Philip just looked disgusted and didn’t say a word. Sensing they were about to turn on him, Max stood up and looked at Isabel.
- I’m going to get your sleeping bag. - Then to his parents, - Stay with her until I come back, ok? - And he rushed out of the room. Philip got up to go after him, but Isabel patted the couch beside her.
- Come, dad, sit with us. - Philip hesitated, looking at the door, but desisted and went to sit with them.

Chapter 29
Max arrived at Isabel’s and got the sleeping bag from the closet. Just as he was leaving, the phone rang. Max picked up and it was Jesse, who was surprised by the sound of a male voice.
- Who’s this? - He asked gruffly.
- Jesse? It’s Max. -
- Oh Max, can I speak to Isabel? -
- She’s at the hospital with Michael, call her on her cell phone. -
- Ok, how’s Michael? -
- He’s in a lot of pain, they keep him sedated but it doesn’t help him much, though, Mum and Dad are there with Isabel, right now. -
-What time is she returning? -
- We’re both staying over. There’s a couch in the room so I came to get the sleeping bag for me. -
- Oh, I see, I’ll call her on the cell phone, then. How are you managing with the hospital? -
- No problem, Isabel keeps his blood all human, but she has to be there to make sure it stays that way. He should be released in three days. -
- Couldn’t Michael have done that for her? -
- We’re not sure, guess he couldn’t trust himself with her life. -
- I can understand how he felt, he was her mate before after all. -
- Well, it’s different here now. -
- Yeah, sure, bye. -
Max left the apartment and stopped by the Crashdown to check on Liz and Maria. Jeff Parker walked up to him.
- Max, sorry about Michael, how’s he doing? -
- Uh, dealing, you know? He’s tough. -
- Yeah, good kid, we miss him. -
- He’ll be back soon. -
- Sure. - He patted Max’s arm and continued towards the counter.
Max found Liz in the kitchen.
- Hey! -
- Max, what are you doing here? Michael ok? -
- Yes, I went to Isabel’s to get the sleeping bag and stopped by to see how you two were doing. -
- We’re fine, Maria hasn’t stopped smiling since Michael whispered her name in his sleep. - She gestured in the blonde’s direction. They turned to look at her with her tray and a big smile on her face.
- Well, that’s a nice change! -
-Yeah, isn’t it? - Liz smiled, happy for her friend.
- Ok, I’m off. I don’t want to leave Isabel too long with Mom and Dad. -
- What do you mean? -
- They’re at the hospital visiting Michael. -
- Oh! Ok, bye then. - They kissed quickly and Max left.
Brody and Stuart had just finished eating at the restaurant. They had had a long chat before dinner, because they had no reservation and had to wait about half an hour. Stuart wanted to go to another restaurant but Brody insisted on this one.
- Much better than I had expected, really. - Stuart said, pleasantly surprised.
- Should be, it’s your first real meal in more than 24 hours. -
- No, it was really good. Well, I better get some rest, tomorrow’s a working day! -
He signaled and the waiter rushed over. Stuart took out his wallet but Brody stopped him.
- No, no, this is on me, for the pleasure of being together again. -
- Ok, I’m too tired to argue. - Stuart said, accepting the invitation.
They left the restaurant and went to Stuart’s car. He checked his watch and raised his eyebrows.
- It’s barely 9:25, thought it was later, mind if I check on my patient? -
- Always the doctor, - Brody shook his head smiling at him, - sure, no sweat. -
They arrived at the hospital and parked near the Emergency entrance.
- I’ll be right back. - Stuart sprinted towards the door.
- Wait for me! - Brody took the keys and closed the car, following his cousin. The nurse on duty greeted Stuart, then gestured questioningly to
Brody. Stuart turned to see him close behind him.
- It’s ok, he’s my cousin, he’s coming with me. -
The nurse nodded smiling and they proceeded towards Michael’s room. Stuart opened the door to find them all standing by the bed looking worried. Michael was groaning and writhing restlessly. His back was beaded with sweat and his pain and discomfort were quiet obvious. Isabel turned as she heard the door and her expression changed immediately to relief.
- Stuart! We were about to call you! - He signaled behind him with his eyes and they saw Brody appear at the door. Isabel grabbed Liz and Maria by the arms, winked at them and pulled them towards Brody.
- Brody! So glad you’re here! We girls are dying for a cup of coffee. Be a dear and come with us to the cafeteria. - She took his arm as they practically swept him along with them.
- How’s Michael? I want to…- That’s all he managed. Maria caught on and grabbed his free arm as Liz pushed him from behind.
- Let Stuart check Michael, we’ll be right back, ok? - Isabel smiled at Brody who let himself be led away, trying unsuccessfully to steal a glance over his shoulder.
- All right, then…- not quite convinced. They turned the corner and Maria was the last to look back, anguish painted on her face.
- Max, what is it? - It took Stuart barely a fraction of a second to turn totally professional.
- He’s burning up and hurting bad. - Max informed him.
Stuart signaled towards the transfusion bag but Max shook his head.
- No, it’s not that. Isabel checked it already. -
- Is there a possibility of you working on him without leaving a hand trace? -
- No trace is left of other aliens, and our connection is still strong. -
- What’s that? - Max realized he had gone a bit too far.
- Nothing, just an alien thing. - Thankfully, Stuart gave it no importance.
- Are you sure? You mustn’t leave any evidence! -
- Absolutely. I’ve healed him many times after his foster father beat him, also a bullet wound and his whole back which was lashed to ribbons, just a couple of days ago. I couldn’t manage the pain either, but the flesh was healed. -
- Is it always like that? -
- No, only with him. Everyone else I’ve healed was perfectly sound right after, human or alien alike. -
- Ok, now, when you heal, does it just happen or you concentrate on the specific damage? -
- So far, I knew what the damage was, I didn’t have to guess. I concentrated on making everything the way it should be and it just happened. I’ve had a few problems, with Michael when he was sick, once, and I found no reason for his fever, so an Indian, who had had previous experience and had been giving some healing stones, helped us get him back to health. Then with a friend of us, who was already dead, and our protector, a shape shifter, who died from an alien attack. There was also this autistic boy, but there was nothing I could heal. -
Michael started muttering incomprehensibly and they leant down trying to make out what he was saying. Max thought it was another nightmare and surprised Stuart saying he had to get Isabel right away, before he ran out of the room.
Stuart wet a small towel in the bathroom and started wiping Michael’s face and back as he waited for Max and Isabel to return.
Max tried to act calmly as he beckoned Isabel from the door of the cafeteria. She excused herself and got up. Liz looked back at him hoping to read his face. Brody and Maria had their backs to the door and they were deep in conversation, so they probably thought Isabel was just going to the ladies room.
- What is it Max? -
- I think Michael is having a nightmare, I need you all with me. How can we get rid of Brody? -
- I think Stuart is the only one who can…wait, I’ve got it. Go, we’ll be right over.-
Max decided to wait for them at the door. Isabel approached the table and put her hand on Brody’s shoulder.
- Hey, I’m so sorry Brody, Stuart sent Max to tell you to take his car home cause he has to stay for a lady who’s about to give birth, before her time, and he’ll stay at his office to be here all night it case the baby has problems later on. He says he’ll call you as soon as he is able, probably tomorrow. I’ll get you his keys. -
- No, it’s ok, I have them in my pocket. -
- Oh, ok, thanks for the coffee, see you soon. - She turned and glared at the perplexed girls, making them know something was up. They took the hint and rushed out of the cafeteria with Isabel at their heels. Brody had to leave totally frustrated and surprised. “Welcome to Roswell”, he said to himself as he downed his cup of coffee and turned towards the parking lot.

Chapter 30
They arrived at Michael’s room to find both Kyle and Stuart brushing Michael’s hair from his face, their other hands squeezing his shoulders and speaking soothingly to him.
- It’s ok, dude, I’m here with you, they’re all coming..-
- You’ll be fine, it’s alright, it’s alright…- Stuart turned to them and asked:
- Who is Hank? - They all went instantly death pale.
- Oh hell, he’s your alien enemy! - Stuart guessed.
- It’s his foster father…- Max answered finding his voice, - why? -
Stuart gestured towards Michael with his head. They all got as close as possible to hear Michael’s mutterings. They started making some sense.
- No, no, it hurts too much…nooo, don’t go…I can take it….yes, yes…I can…just don’t go…- he winced and gasped, then moaned and started breathing hard, - tell me you love me…yes! It hurts! It hurts like hell!...please, tell me you love me…you only say it when you fuck me!...Hank please…- another heart wrenching moan, - Hank, wait…you’re tearing me…wait please…nooo…you’re hurting me…Hank, please…no, I can take it…- another moan, - just don’t go…- he gasped, -.please Hank…yes, hurt me…just say it…please? - Maria just lost it.
- Oh my god, Michael, I’ll kill him! I’ll find him and kill him! - She slumped to the floor, sobbing. Isabel and Liz were in exactly the same condition but dumb with shock. They helped Maria up and took her to the couch, where they all sat hugging each other and crying. Maria’s wailing seemed to have got through to Michael. His breathing calmed down gradually and his eyes started opening.
- Hey, you ok? - Stuart asked once his eyes were fully open. The unfamiliar voice confused Michael, who closed his eyes tight and whispered:
- No, not in front of my friends, please…- This time Max spoke.
- Michael, it’s alright, we’re all here with you, it was a nightmare, it’s just us. -
He opened his eyes, not sure what to expect and saw Max and Kyle and this other guy who was vaguely familiar, staring down at him with worried looks in their eyes. The three weepy girls rushed to him, pushing the guys aside and hugging him from all sides. Maria was kissing his cheek, Isabel was kissing his hair and someone else was rubbing his back. He looked over his shoulder and discovered it was Liz.
- Hell, it’s hurting…- he rasped, his voice loaded with pain.
- Ok, Max, just do what you can, I’ll see how to handle it. - Stuart decided.
Michael turned to look at him, not sure who he was, Stuart sensed his confusion.
- I’m your doctor, I’m Brody’s cousin, remember? I know who you are and want to help you get well. Please trust me. - Michael stared at him and nodded.
- Yeah, I remember you. - Stuart sighed, feeling very uncomfortable.
- I’m sure you do. No wonder you just had a nightmare. I’m sorry for the pain I’ve caused you, but I wasn’t the one who shoved the rod up your ass. -
- Nicely put! - Michael tried to chuckle but ended wincing. - I know you were trying to help me, you had to hurt me, there was no other way. Thanks, man. -
- Alright Max, he’s all yours. - Stuart stepped back and saw Isabel reach her hand towards the door, then heard the lock click. He couldn’t help the look of awe he gave her. She understood, one thing was hearing, another seeing.
Max placed his hands over Michael’s hips and concentrated. The white light started glowing from his palms. He found out most of the fever and pain came from the burnt closed wounds inside him being infected. His alien part had fought the antibiotics, blocking their effect, but working against him. He concentrated on the infection, cleaning up the wounds and started the natural healing process without interfering with the healing itself. The lack of infection killed the fever, and the pain lessened considerably but not completely. The tissue around the wounds was still inflamed and responded with painful signals to the nerves of the damaged areas. Healing would take care of that. Hopefully, Michael would be able to sleep tonight without much tossing and groaning.
He raised his hands and the white light was turned off. Sweat beaded Max’s face, and he went to the bathroom to wash up. Stuart was intrigued until Max came back and explained what he had found and done. He was truly amazed.
- You’d make one hell of a doctor! - He exclaimed.
- Yeah, I’ve truly thought about it, I could say I’m psychic and that I’ve studied healing with the hands in the Philippines or wherever they do that. -
- I’d open a clinic with you, honest, think about it, we could work together.-
Max nodded, seriously considering the proposal.
- I’m also interested in studying medicine, it’s really my second choice, but if Max goes for it, so will I. - Liz added enthusiastically.
- Well, make a wish, they say they sometimes come true. - Stuart smiled at the amazing people he had been so lucky to find.
- I hate to say this, but thank you Michael for bringing us together. -
- Yeah, say that to my ass! - He smirked in his typical way. The girl’s tears turned into giggles, glad that Michael was feeling better, and the current problem had been solved. Someone trying to open the door made them jump. Isabel was raising her hand to unlock it but Stuart stopped her.
- Wait! - He whispered and went to stand by the door. - Now! - He mouthed, and Isabel unlocked it. Stuart pretended to open it from inside and met the nurse’s confused look.
- It was unlocked. It must have jammed. - He said apologetically. - Ok, kids, come with me, who needs a ride home? - Maria and Liz went to kiss Michael goodnight and Kyle whispered to him as the girls turned to go:
- I could kiss you man, but they’ll take it the wrong way. -
Michael smiled as he bit his lower lip, and couldn’t help noticing the way Kyle was staring at his mouth.
- Thanks, dude, see ya. - He thought best to close his eyes shutting off Kyle’s disturbing gaze. He heard Kyle walking away. Then Max and Isabel telling him they would be right back. And then the door clicking shut and the nurse’s hands on him. He braced himself for what was coming.
They arrived at Michael’s room to find both Kyle and Stuart brushing Michael’s hair from his face, their other hands squeezing his shoulders and speaking soothingly to him.

Chapter 31
Stuart led them to the Emergency Exit and went over to the nurse on duty’s desk. She smiled up at him.
- Doctor…-
He took the pen from her hand and started writing on her pad.
- I need to have this sent immediately to room 207. Susan is with my patient and the shots are the last he gets so it has to be right away, ok? -
She checked what he had written as she spoke on the phone to order the prescription “urgent on the double!”
- Light sedation? Patient’s getting better? -
- Yeah, the boy’s healing nicely. -
- Amazing how these kids just bounce back, huh? -
- Well, age has a lot to do with it. I’ll need a taxi…-
- No, you won’t. Your cousin took a taxi and left you your car keys. - She handed them over to him.
- Oh, great, thanks. -
They walked towards the car.
- I’m giving Michael a thorough check up examination with two other doctors tomorrow morning, so what Max did tonight was perfect. They will find no infection, and attribute it to the antibiotics he’s receiving, and if everything goes the way I expect it to, my 72 hours diagnosis will hold. - He turned to Isabel..
- See you at lunch? -
- Probably sooner. Max and I are staying over, and since I’m not in school anymore, I’ll stay with Michael all the time, to make sure he has no blood problems. -
- Ok, fine, see you then. - A smile and a wave, and Isabel’s small smile screamed disappointment, but that was it. They got in the car and took off. Max and Isabel walked to Michael’s room and sat on the bench just outside, waiting for the nurse to leave so they could go back in.
Susan entered the room and left her tray on the table by the bathroom door. She approached Michael, and gave his thigh a gentle squeeze. He smirked and purred, acknowledging her presence in the room.
- Hey, Susan. -
- Hi kid, ready for me? -
- Always, you’re in charge. -
- How have you been? -
- Dealing. -
She scoffed, and checked him out, thinking “nice! And cuddly! But too young! Damn!” She sighed and went to work.
- Let’s check out the IV’s first…- She pushed down the tube attached to the needle making sure it filled with blood, first one thigh, then the other. Ok. She proceeded to withdraw the dilator very slowly and gently, stopping every time Michael jerked and gasped, then took the instrument to the bathroom and washed it with soap, rinsing and drying it carefully. She placed it back on the tray when the door opened and a rookie nurse came in with a small tray. She shyly peaked in, awaiting permission to enter. Susan beckoned her in.
- Sorry, I have a last minute change of prescription from Doctor Davis…-
- Oh, what is it? - Susan took the tray from the girl who couldn’t take her eyes away from the naked boy on the bed. She checked the note and changed the syringes with the sedative so the girl would take away the other one.
- Millie, right? - “Let’s give this girl a treat,” she thought.
- Yes. - She answered sweetly.
- This is Michael, say hello to him. -
- Hi Michael. - So shy…
- Hey, Millie. - He opened his eyes and she was lost in the honey pools.
- Ok, girl, I need a hand here. -
Millie tore her eyes away from him unwillingly, and obeyed her superior. She stood by Michael’s right hip, opposite Susan, who had her hand on Michael’s left buttock.
- Spread him like I’m doing. - She asked, and once the girl complied, Susan slid in the nozzle attached to the large tube of ointment. Susan checked on the girl and saw her staring open mouthed. She squeezed half a tube into Michael who gasped at the cold goop. She took the tube back to her tray and brought the clean dilator, using a scoop of lubricant on her other finger. She greased the mean looking thing and wiped what was left on Michael, rubbing in all around to ease the entrance and placed the blunt instrument against him. A small cry from the girl made Susan look up at her. She noticed her eyes were now also wide open.
- Are you going to…put that thing…into him? - She asked sounding shocked.
- That’s where I took it out from. -
- Why? - With a shaky voice. Susan patiently explained the reason and need to use it on the boy. She nodded not quite convinced and stared as it disappeared gradually into him, not without a few moans and winces.
- Ok, I have to give him 3 IM’s, maybe you could ask him if he would let you give him one as practice, with my supervision? -
- Do you think he would let me? - Susan shrugged.
- Ask him, it’s his ass.-
Millie moved over near Michael’s face.
- Michael, would you…? -
- Sure, why not? -
- Thanks, - She gave him a big smile.
- Ok, you give him this one. - Susan handed her a syringe, then swabbed Michael with an alcohol soaked cotton wool, and passed it to Millie. She jabbed the needle into the middle of Michael’s left buttock. He jerked and gasped.
- Shouldn’t it be higher up, here, - she pointed, - because of the sciatic nerve? -
- Not with this mass of muscle, his sciatic is deeper than this needle, I assure you.-
Millie nodded and swabbed him and jabbed. Michael jerked and hissed. “Millie sure needed a lot of practice”, he thought, regretting his decision.
- Millie! You were supposed to wait until I finished! These are rather painful and he doesn’t need to take 2 at the same time! -
- Sorry, I’ll just wait then…-
- No, just go slowly, that one is also oily. Pull the plunger first to make sure you’re not in a blood vessel. - She did, no blood entered the syringe. - Ok, now push it in slowly. - Michael was biting his lower lip hard to keep quiet, not to make the girl more nervous than he knew she already was. He just couldn’t help groan a little at the end. Then Susan expertly shot the last one into him, as Millie massaged him where she had injected him. She felt his muscles under her hand tense real hard as he got the last shot. They massaged him together for a while until Susan thought it was enough.
- Ok, now I need to check his rectal temperature. -
- How will you do it if he’s got that thing sticking into him? -
- “That thing” has a little screen that shows his temperature. - Susan bent over Michael and spread him just enough to see the screen on the upper tab. She pointed at the screen for Millie to see and asked her to read it out for her.
The inexperienced girl leant over and pushed her elbow into Michael’s thigh.
- Ooowwwww, unnggghhhh…- Michael protested as Susan realized what was going on.
- Millie, watch out! - The girl jumped up away from Michael, who writhed with pain and was breathing hard.
- Oh my god, what did I do? -
- Your elbow! -
- Oh! So sorry! -
- Michael, you ok? -
- Yeah, I think so. -
- Be careful, please! Now read out his temperature. -
This time Millie was careful not to lean on him and read out:
- 99.3. Isn’t it a little high? Normal is 98.6, right? -
- Right, but as far as he’s concerned, this is the lowest he has got so far. Kind of hot blooded, it’s rare, but possible. -
Millie was still staring at the small screen, full concentration.
- Wait, it’s going up, it’s now 99.7 and it’s rising! - She exclaimed with alarm. Susan noticed beads of sweat starting to form on his back and his muscles were tensing tight again standing out visibly.
- Michael, are you alright? - Susan was now worried.
- My thigh is on fire…- Susan immediately pushed down the tube on the thigh Millie had leant on and no blood backed up.
- Damn, it’s out of the vein! Hang on, I’ll get it back in. - She turned to Millie,
- Hold him down, - and to Michael again, - Keep still, honey. -
She proceeded to fish around for a vein, as Millie’s hands held his thigh as still as possible, and it took about 5 tries to get one back. Michael’s temperature had gone to 102, with the stress of the pain, but started going back down slowly as the needle was back in place. Susan used the same ointment she had pushed into him to cover the slightly swollen area around the needle where the plasma had leaked, and applied a light massage to make it penetrate the skin.
- I’ll take responsibility for this, sorry Michael. - She added feeling guilty.
- Nahhh, it’s ok…I’ll say I moved, it will be my fault. -
Millie was in tears.
- I’m so sorry, it will never happen again in my lifetime, I swear! - She stated, dramatically. Michael thought she sounded very much like Maria.
- Ok, kid, we’ll let you rest now. Do you need anything else? -
- No Susan, and hey, Millie, it’s ok, don’t worry, I’m cool. -
She rushed to him and kissed his cheek, then looked down at him with tears running down her face. Michael reached out and grabbed her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
- I’m fine really, you’ll make a great nurse, maybe, who knows? If I get hurt again you’ll take care of me. - He smiled at her.
- I’d be glad to! No! I mean, I don’t want you to get hurt again, but if you do, I’ll be here for you. - She was now sniffling and shaking.
Susan put her arm around her shoulders and pulled her away from Michael.
- Go wash your face, Millie, he needs to sleep. -
She nodded and went to the bathroom. Susan went to Michael.
- Thank you, you’re a great guy, I’m so sorry, she didn’t mean to hurt you…-
- I know, it’s ok. I’ve been hurt a lot in my life, on purpose, so I’m used to it. -
The way she looked at him was definitely motherly, and he felt touched by it.
- Sleep tight, kid. -
- Good night, Susan. -
Millie came out of the bathroom, and both nurses got their trays and left.
Max and Isabel were surprised to see 2 nurses come out of Michael’s room, especially since the young one seemed to have been crying, so they rushed into the room, and they were relieved to see Michael apparently sleeping.
- You asleep? - Isabel asked brushing her lips on his cheek.
- Almost there, Iz. -
- We’re right here, ok? We’re staying with you. -
- Thanks. -
He snuggled and winced as he shifted his weight a little on his good leg, then he sighed and relaxed.

The Martyr of Antar
Chapter 32
Michael was in a restless sleep, he was moaning, and writhing and muttering the same word over and over. .
- Max, do something, please! - Isabel said worriedly.
Max put his hands over the area he guessed was causing Michael's reaction. After a few seconds, he turned to his sister looking absolutely frustrated. He could find nothing wrong enough to be causing Michael's distress. She frowned when he told her so.
- Then why does he keep repeating "hurts, hurts" if nothing is wrong? It doesn't make sense! -
- Could it be another "Hank" nightmare? -
- That could make sense...- Isabel pulled up a chair and sat by Michael, holding his hand and rubbing his back.
- I'm right here, Michael, I'm not going anywhere until you're alright, I'm here beside you...-
Michael seemed to relax some. Max pulled up another chair and sat by Michael's other side, holding his hand and squeezing his shoulder. Michael calmed down some, so they decided to stay there. They made themselves as comfortable as they could and went to sleep.
That's how Susan found them when she came in for the medication. She shook Isabel's arm.
- Sorry dear, you must leave the room. - Isabel opened her eyes, recognizing the woman, and started to pad out of the room. She kicked Max's foot as she passed by him and he jumped up. Isabel beckoned and gestured towards the nurse with her head, and Max obediently followed her. They sat on the bench snoozing until she came out again. She patted Isabel's hand and smiled.
Isabel went back in and Susan stopped Max as he started to follow her.
- I'm sorry about Michael's thigh, last time I came, the needle got out of the vein and some plasma leaked. I rubbed in some ointment, but apparently it didn't help much. I brought a more specific one this time, and I'm sure it will take care of the problem. - She smiled and left. Max went to Isabel who was caressing Michael's hair knowing the nurse left him sore.
- It's his thigh, the nurse says he had a problem with the IV. -
He found the hurt thigh and proceeded to repair most of the damage so it could be attributed to the new ointment.
Max rubbed his face and sighed.
- Well, I think we still have a couple more hours to catch on some sleep. - Max announced, checking his watch: 4:28 am.
Michael was breathing evenly, so Isabel kissed his cheek and went back to the couch, as Max returned to the sleeping bag.
Max's alarm clock went on at 6:30 making him sit up and turn it off almost immediately. But not soon enough.
- Dammit, Max! - Isabel sounded hoarse and very pissed.
Max stole a peak at Michael, who continued sleeping peacefully.
- No harm done, he's still sleeping. -
- When has any alarm managed to wake him up? I meant ME! -
- Oops, sorry. - He ran to the bathroom before things got really ugly. 15 minutes later, he came out showered and dressed to find Isabel, Liz and Maria having coffee, o.j. and bagels fresh from the Crashdown. Max joined them and a few minutes later, the door opened again. They were struck dumb at the sight of a Jim Valenti grinning from ear to ear, pushing a reluctant looking Kyle into the room. Then he beamed at them and waved exaggeratedly before closing the door, the sound of his running feet filling their stunned ears. Kyle stood with his hands clasped as if in prayer, looking at his feet. That was even weirder, he should have gone for what was left of the food under normal conditions. Maria was, of course, the first one to find her voice.
- Kyle, what was that? -
- You don't want to know...- He didn't even look up. Maria went into full Hurricane DeLuca mode, her fists at her waist and her foot tapping the floor impatiently. Not good.
- Just what do you mean? Of course I want to know, so tell me what's up right NOW! -
- He's going on a picnic with your mother. -
- SHIT KYLE! -
- That's why I didn't want to tell you! - They were all shushing Maria, reminding her they were in a hospital. Max finally decided to do something. He gathered his stuff and turned to the others.
- Well, we better be going or we'll be late, c'mon. - He walked to the door looking impatient.
Liz and Maria, who was still flushed red, went to Michael's side and kissed his cheek one after the other. As they turned to leave, they found Kyle just behind them standing in line.
- Are you going to kiss him too? - Asked Liz looking as innocent as she could muster. Maria started giggling.
- What? Nooo! - Said Kyle, scowling. He nudged Michael on the ribs.
- Get well, dude. - Michael groaned and Maria whacked Kyle up the head as he turned to go and he cried out in protest. Maria followed him at his heels, saying: "go, go, go," and whacking him again with each word. Kyle covered his head with his hands and tried uselessly to get away.
Isabel reached her hand out to the door and closed it after them enjoying the silent aftermath.
At least Liz had had the decency to put all the rubbish in a bag and take it with her to toss it somewhere. She could imagine Max and Liz standing in the middle of a sparkling house, so clean that even the walls and ceiling shone. She blinked and saw now a very naked Michael lying over an apparently also naked Maria, and going at it like horndogs in the midst of a domestic chaos, coloured candles lit all around them. "Those will end like Kentucky Fried...M&M's?" she thought. She blinked herself back to the hospital room and shook her head.
- Oh my god! They’re making crazy! This time I’m really going out of my mind! - Michael groaned and Isabel rushed to him. She touched his cheek but he felt alright.
- You’re ok. - She whispered mostly to herself. She was about to pat his ass when she remembered he was sore there, so she just put her hand on it and gave it a gentle squeeze. Michael purred and shifted his hips bucking against her hand.
- Yeah, give me a massage, that really helps…- he whispered in his sleep. Isabel sighed and complied. She used both hands to knead him carefully, not to hurt him, rather to ease his pain. It was definitely working, by the way he was relaxing. Her hands were beginning to tire, when Stuart arrived. He walked towards the bed as she watched him approach her. She noticed his eyes were focused on her hands as she went on massaging Michael’s butt, and she could have sworn she saw a hint of jealousy, which she certainly liked.
- Is he alright? - He asked as he leant down to kiss her cheek. Isabel turned her head “accidentally”, and he kissed the corner of her mouth instead. She made herself blush just a little, keeping her eyes shyly away from his.
- When are you coming for him? - She asked, barely above a whisper. He checked his watch.
- My colleagues should arrive at about 9:00 but I have to admit they’re not very punctual. - She detected a smile in his voice. She finally turned to look up at him and flashed him her best smile. He couldn’t help returning it.
- Have to run… - He said with a sigh and hurried out of the room.
Isabel’s hands were still on Michael, but though they had been still during Stuart’s visit, she didn’t find him protesting, but fast asleep. She raised them slowly without any reaction from him, and went to the couch to cuddle up and snooze until they came to take him.
Maria sat behind the wheel and took a whiff of her cedar oil vial. She drove at a reasonable speed and waited patiently at the red lights, to everyone’s relief. They arrived safely at West Roswell High and she parked in her usual space. Maria was checking herself out on the rear window, when Kyle sent everything to hell on a one way ticket when he asked:
- What time is Stuart giving Michael his check up? - Maria froze and Max and Liz closed their eyes in dismay, to open them up again and give Kyle a glare that sent fire his way. Kyle looked back at them in a “what did I do?” confusion which was immediately clarified by Maria’s high pitched scream, which made everyone in hearing distance turn to look their way. It ended in an unnerving and unstopping whine which drove them nuts. Liz reached over the seat and hugged Maria to her in an effective attempt to shut her up.
- Maria! Maria! It’s ok, calm down, Michael will be fine, Max has made sure everything will be alright, please, take it easy, ok? Ok!
Maria ended sobbing into Liz’s shoulder and Kyle handed her the cedar oil vial. Liz placed it under Maria’s nose as she took a deep breath and she started coughing her lungs out.
- Dammit Liz, you almost choked me to death! - She wheezed.
She noticed her three friends were staring at her as if she had suddenly turned green or something.
- OUT! Everyone out! I’m going back to the hospital! -
Max reached over with lightning speed and retrieved the keys from the ignition. Maria stared at him open mouthed in utter disbelief.
- Max! Give me back my keys! Shit, Max! I need my keys!-
- Maria, Stuart is sticking his neck out for us, he doesn’t need the extra attention! You must promise me you’ll stay in school! Promise Maria! I really mean it! - Max looked very serious.
- Max is right, Maria, we need Michael out of the hospital as soon as possible so Max can heal him completely without arousing suspicions, and the only way is letting Stuart make it happen! - Liz as usual was the one to reach Maria and get her to behave.
- Alright, alright! You’re absolutely right! I want him out of there too. - She grabbed her bag and stepped out of the car. They went to the lockers and then the two girls went to Geography together. Max and Kyle went to their own separate classes.
Michael was in a restless sleep, he was moaning, and writhing and muttering the same word over and over. .
- Max, do something, please! - Isabel said worriedly.

The Martyr of Antar
Chapter 33
A beep from her cell phone made Isabel jump. She picked it up and saw she had a voice mail. She heard Max’s voice saying:
“ My phone is in vibe mode, call me when it’s over to know how it went.” She frowned, typical Max, he didn’t have the guts to call her directly cause he knew she would bite his head off over the phone, so her chicken brother sent her a voice mail! Wuz! She tossed the phone on the couch beside her and looked over to check on Michael who was still sleeping. She wrapped her arms around her breasts and continued snoozing.
The phone ringing woke her up and this time she was really pissed. Without checking who the caller was, she barked: “What!” and was surprised not to hear Max’s voice but a girl’s.
Five seconds after the class started, Liz knew Maria was freaking out. She knew her so well, that what to the rest of the class was a calmer than normal Maria, to her it wasn’t at all. She could see the little details, the way her finger twirled around a lock of hair, her head turning to look this way and that every few seconds, her legs crossing and uncrossing…they were unmistakable to Liz. Then to her dismay, Maria raised her hand.
- Yes, Maria? -
- Please I need to go to the bathroom. - The teacher nodded and she proceeded to leave the room. “That was sneaky.” Liz thought, upset because there was no way the teacher would also let her go, knowing they were best friends. Maria had barely closed the door when she took off running, and of course, everyone heard her. Liz thought it was uncanny how she had imitated Jim Valenti’s weird performance of this morning.
Maria raced to the bathroom and locked herself in. She dialed Isabel’s number and heard her answer in an angry tone.
- Hello? Hello! - she said impatiently.
- Yes, Maria…- Isabel sounded as if she was talking to a 5 year old retard.
- Have they already taken him? - “Oh shit”, thought Isabel, “she remembered.”
- Not yet, Stuart said it would be from 9 on. -
- Please call me when they do, my phone…-
- Is in vibe mode…- Isabel finished for her, - I know, so is Max’s.-
- Ok, thanks. - She hanged up.
Isabel went on snoozing and Maria took off full speed back to the classroom. Liz was relieved to see her come back. She tried to convey a silent message, but Maria wasn’t locking eyes with her. Now she kept checking her watch at short intervals and Liz wondered what was going on.
Isabel woke up to a warm kiss on her forehead. Her eyes opened to see Stuart’s fiery hair and his smiling face looking down at her.
- I hate to wake you up. -
Isabel sat up and saw two orderlies in white waiting at the door. Stuart beckoned to them and they came in with the stretcher. They slid Michael expertly onto it, and covered him with a sheet up to his shoulders. Michael groaned and reached back to push the sheet down all the way to his hips. The orderly started pulling it up again and Michael voiced his protest. “No!” The orderly looked at Stuart for instructions and Stuart shrugged. The orderly pulled it up to his waist and Michael allowed it. Isabel went to him and ran her fingers through his hair, watching his lashes part and his eyes flutter open.
- Where are they taking me Iz? - He whispered sleepily.
- Stuart is giving you a check up with two other doctors from the hospital, so you can go home. -
- Oh, cool…- He closed his eyes again, and Isabel kissed his cheek.
- Hang on, for me, ok? -
- Sure, Izzy, anything for you. - He smirked and sighed.
She watched them take him down the corridor, the other orderly and Stuart taking the IV’s like when they brought him to this room. As they rounded the corner, Stuart turned and smiled at her reassuringly, and waved at her. She smiled back and returned to the couch. She sat in the middle, closing her eyes and relaxing. She concentrated on Michael, to go to him, waiting patiently for her mind to find him. She knew it would take a few minutes.
Maria noticed it was almost 5 minutes to 9. She raised her hand again.
- Bathroom, Maria? - Guessed the teacher.
- I’m sorry, breakfast didn’t agree with me, I’d hate to throw up here…- Magic words. She was out of the class in two strides. This time, though, she didn’t go to the bathroom, but left the school altogether, hailing a taxi right outside. She had the man flying to the hospital just within the speed limits. She checked her watch and it was 9:16. Flashing her pass to the nurse at the desk, she raced towards Michael’s room. She tried the door but it was locked. She guessed what Isabel was up to and knocked desperately to be let in. Isabel’s eyes opened, scowling in frustration, she unlocked the door and Maria stumbled into the room, her eyes resting immediately on the empty bed.
- When did they take him? -
- Just before you arrived. -
- Are you going to him? -
- I was trying…-
- Will he let you in? -
- He can’t help it, he’s so full of drugs, he can’t block me out, and he won’t even try. -
- Sorry, go ahead. -
Isabel closed her eyes again and placed her hands, palms up on her legs. Maria waited until she saw Isabel visibly relax to a deeper level, and knelt in front of her, placing her hands on Isabel’s, palm to palm. She felt a crackle of electricity as their palms met and then they were glued together: They were connected, she felt her brain melt into hers and they both floated towards a source of energy that acted like a magnet. Maria knew it was Michael’s energy without the slightest doubt.
