Chapter 21: Rendezvous in Arizona

Later that evening, an exhausted group of parents pulled into the Arizona Trails Resort. The guards had stopped them just outside of Hondo and told them that the kids were OK, while quickly altering the appearance of their cars. The parents had spent hours on the road, driving in loops and doubling back in an effort to make sure the skins hadn’t followed them. The only thing that had kept them going was the knowledge that their kids made it out of Las Cruces unharmed.

Isabel was sitting outside a family sized tent, nervously prodding a small campfire with a stick. She had been sitting in the same spot for hours, waiting for her parents to arrive. The others had gone off in search of some food but Isabel, Liz, and Maria had refused to move until their parents arrived.

When Isabel spotted her mother approaching from the parking lot, she let out a whoop of relief. Isabel ran over and enveloped her mom in a tight hug.

Dianne smiled in relief. “Thank God you’re alright. We were so worried about you guys…”

The rest of the gang was just coming back with supper when they heard Isabel’s heart wrenching sobs. “I’m so sorry mom…I’m so sorry…” She sobbed.

When the others spotted their parents trudging in from the parking lot, they rushed over to greet them. Max lost all of his usual composure and threw his arms around his father as though it was the first time he’d seen him in years.

There were relieved hugs all around and for a moment no one said a word. Michael and Ava stood off to the side alone until Amy Deluca spotted them and squished them both into a group hug with Maria. Even the Valenti men dropped their usual macho acts and embraced each other for a moment.

After a few minutes, they all regained their composure and gathered around the campfire. Food was passed around while they discussed their adventures.

“Courtney knew about the skins? I knew there was something off about her!” Maria gasped.

“I have no idea where she fits in with all of this but she did save Jeff’s life today so…” Nancy trailed off with a confused shrug.

Liz spoke up. “How did you guys end up together?” She asked, looking back and forth between her parents and Max’s.

“After the thing at the Crashdown, your mom and I ran straight out to the car and took off. Nancy tried to call the others to let them know what was going on. She got through to Jim and the Whitmans but we couldn’t reach either Philip or Dianne. We drove out toward their house to see if they’d already left and they ended up catching a ride with us.” Jeff said, leaving out his role in the Evans’ escape.

Dianne gaped at Jeff. “You’re being way too modest Jeff! If you hadn’t helped us, we might not be here right now.”

There were gasps all around. “What happened dad?” Max asked in shock.

Philip quickly explained the scene that unfolded at the house. He emphasized the point that Jeff had rushed out of the car to help armed with nothing but a crowbar and then finished with the tale of them driving off in the Parker’s car. “We couldn’t get to our car keys anyway…if Jeff and Nancy hadn’t gotten there when they did, we would’ve been sitting ducks.” He concluded.

Liz threw her arms around her father. “Oh dad! You’re a hero!” She gushed.

Jeff blushed and fumbled for something to say. Before he got even two words out, Max marched over and stuck his hand out to Jeff. Liz stepped aside and watched with pride as the two men shook hands.

“I will never be able to thank you enough for what you did today. I just wish…I’m sorry we put you in that position.” Max said quietly. Jeff pulled him into a manly hug.

“I have no doubt that you and your parents would’ve done exactly the same thing for us, Max.” Jeff said.

Amy had been uncharacteristically quiet during the whole discussion and it worried Maria. Delucas were notoriously loud and her mother was no exception to that rule.

“Mom? Are you OK?” Maria asked hesitantly.

Amy glanced nervously at the others. “I’m just a little bit overwhelmed right now. I mean…today I killed a man.” She whispered.

Ava took her hand in reassurance. “I’m sorry we put you in danger Amy. You did what you had to though. He was there to hurt you…you were just defending yourself.”

Amy shook her head in denial. “That’s the thing though…I was scared and I wasn’t thinking straight. What if he had been one of the good guys? What if he came in blasting because he thought I was a danger to you guys or something? He easily could’ve been one of your missing protectors and I just went and killed him because I was scared.” Amy said sadly.

“That man was not one of the protectors and you did the right thing. You didn’t know hitting him would kill him. You just knew that someone broke into your house and attacked you…you were trying to fend him off, not kill him mom.” Maria insisted.

Jim and Michael locked eyes from across the campfire. Amy was feeling the same thing as Michael had after killing Pierce and they both knew it. Neither one of them meant to hurt anybody but it had happened anyway and it was terrifying.

“Remember when we told you about what happened with Agent Pierce?” Michael asked quietly. Amy nodded.

“When Max told you guys about that, I was so sure that you’d think I was this terrible monster. I was afraid that you’d think I betrayed all of you because I accidentally killed a human. You knew I didn’t mean to though…you all understood.” Michael stared at his shoes, struggling to find the right words.

“I guess what I’m trying to say is…you didn’t betray anyone today Amy. Just like you knew I didn’t mean to kill Pierce, we know that you didn’t mean to kill that skin. He tried to blast you. He wanted you dead and he didn’t even know you. He was the monster…not you.” Michael finished, looking up to see Amy’s reaction.

Amy relaxed a little. “Thank you for telling me that Michael. It really means a lot to me.”

Philip cleared his throat nervously. “I think we all did a few things today that we aren’t necessarily proud of. I’m not thrilled that I shot a gun for the first time today. I’m not happy that my children had to run for their lives or that my wife had to jump out a window. I think we just have to accept that this is the way things are going to be for a while.”

Max and Isabel looked stricken. They were immediately convinced that they’d ruined their parents’ lives forever. “I’m so sorry dad…” They murmured in unison.

“This is absolutely not your fault. I know what you’re thinking…you think we would have been better off if we had never met you, right?” Philip asked. Off their shameful nods he continued.

“The happiest times in my life were spent with you guys…as a family. I can’t imagine any life without the two of you in it, being a good life. All I’m saying is that things might be a little dangerous for a little while but we’re going to be OK. We can all get through this together.” Philip explained.

Max still felt horribly guilty about the situation they were all in now. “If any of you feel like you want to go your own way…maybe find a quiet little town to settle down in, we’ll understand…” He said sadly. He couldn’t even look any of them in the eye.

“You guys told us you were stronger together. I’d like to think that includes us too. Whether you want to admit it or not, you need us…and we need you. There is no way I’m going to abandon my own son just because things got scary today. On the contrary, I’d much rather be there and try to help in whatever way I can.” Gloria Whitman said, fixing the others with an intense stare.

Jim nodded in agreement. “I made my choice a long time ago. I’m not going to turn back now.”

Amy sat up straight and put on her best sassy grin. “Do you honestly think that I’m going to let my daughter traipse around the country with her boyfriend, unsupervised? Nope…absolutely not. You can’t make me.” She said, boldly trying to accept this new situation.

Dianne didn’t even need to add her two cents on the situation. The others had already said it all. Instead, she tried to change the subject to relieve a bit of the tension. “So are we going to see the Grand Canyon tomorrow?” She asked.

“We’re not anywhere if we don’t figure out a way to come up with more money. We barely had $200 between the eight of us when we took off and the $1000 that Mr. Whitman gave us last weekend won’t last very long. Since we probably can’t use our credit cards, we’re going to have to come up with a plan…” Isabel pointed out.

“I think we’ll be OK for a little while.” Charles Whitman began. “Gloria and I hit the ATM just outside of Hondo. We withdrew as much cash as the machine would let us…$1000.”

“Amy and I stopped at an ATM just before we passed through Albuquerque. Between the two of us we managed to get almost $600.” Jim said.

“We stopped in Albuquerque too. Nancy and I can chip in another $1000.” Jeff Parker added.

“I had maybe $100 in my wallet and then we got $1000 on the way here. It sounds like we all opted for the maximum withdrawal. That should help, but I’m concerned that all those large cash transactions in one day will raise red flags with the FBI.” Philip pointed out.

“The FBI was on campus dad. They’ve got to know we took off by now.” Isabel said.

Kyle shrugged helplessly. “It’s better that you guys did your banking before you left New Mexico anyway, right? They won’t be able to track us so easily that way. If we’re careful about how we spend the money, we should be OK.”

Michael shifted uncomfortably. “We can get jobs along the way. You don’t need to give up all your money…”

Gloria waved a hand in dismissal. “Of course. We’ll probably have to lay low for a little while but eventually we’ll find a place where we can settle for a bit longer. We’ll worry about getting jobs then. For now, let’s just worry about keeping each other safe.”

“So if we stick to a reasonable budget, we should be OK for now. We’ll probably have to forgo hotels altogether because camping is much cheaper. It’s more private too, so that will work to our advantage.” Liz added, slightly relieved that they wouldn’t have to add financial worries to all the rest of their problems…yet.

“OK, well then I vote that we go see the Grand Canyon tomorrow. Since we’re planning on playing up the whole ‘tourist’ image, we might as well do it right.” Alex said with a shrug. There was little else they could do at this point but stick to the original plans.

“Should we split up for the day or stay together? There are a lot of us…a group this size might stick out.” Maria asked, mildly annoyed that every little step they made had to be carefully planned in advance.

Ava shook her head. “I think we should stick together. I don’t think we should risk getting separated just yet.”

“We’re going to have to split up at least temporarily though because there’s no way all of us will fit in one vehicle.” Jim pointed out.

“We’ll have the guards with us so it won’t hurt to split up for a little bit I guess. We didn’t stick together all the time at Las Cruces and we’re probably safer out here anyway.” Maria mused.

“Right now, we don’t know how many skins Kivar sent here or where Tess, Rath and Lonnie went so we can’t afford to split up the foursquares. We need to be safe, even if we’re going to play tourists.” Max added.

“What if we have Liz, Maria, Kyle and Alex go in one car and then Max, Michael, Ava and Isabel take another…The rest of us can just head out there in our own cars.” Jim suggested.

Michael shook his head. “The soldiers can’t really sense you guys like they can with us so they wouldn’t know if you were in danger right away. We’ll have to ask a few of the soldiers to ride along with you to the Canyon.” He said, addressing the parents.

“Alright guys. I’m exhausted so why don’t we just go with that plan and then call it a night. I could really use some shuteye.” Nancy said.

The others nodded in agreement. The next morning they would all get up early enough to catch a quick breakfast before heading out to the South Entrance of Grand Canyon National Park. None of them really felt festive enough to be planning some grand tourist adventure but there was really nothing else they could do at this point. They had to stick with their plans and play tourist for a while until things settled down.

Chapter 22: Settling In

The whole group slept in late the next morning. They had been exhausted from the previous day’s events. After a quick breakfast at a little café down the road, they hopped into separate cars and headed out for Grand Canyon National Park.

“I hate being separated like this. Skins, the evil trio…hell, even the FBI are out there somewhere and here we are splitting up to do random sight seeing. It just feels weird.” Liz complained.

“We have no choice but to follow our original plan though. We’re here now and if we just sit around the campground and never venture out to see the sights, people are going to start to wonder why.” Kyle pointed out.

Maria stayed relatively silent from her position in the driver’s seat. She and Michael had already had this conversation earlier in their tent. Michael wasn’t thrilled about being separated from her at a time like this. They had ended up in a full-blown argument because she thought he didn’t trust her ability to protect herself and he thought she wasn’t taking the situation seriously enough. Eventually they called a truce and decided that a few hours apart would be good for everyone…them included.

As Maria, Liz, Alex and Kyle pulled up to the South Entrance to the park, they looked around in awe. They found an overlook spot to park the truck and noticed that there was a hiking trail nearby. As they piled out of the truck, they were stunned by the beauty around them.

“This place is amazing. I never imagined it would be so beautiful.” Liz gasped.

“I say we take advantage of our free time and see where that trail goes.” Alex suggested. He wasn’t worried about being in danger out on the trail because a few of the soldiers would be following close behind at all times.

The others nodded and grabbed a few bottles of water for the hike. The further they walked, the more they seemed to relax. The view seemed to have a calming effect for each of them.

“I know this sounds weird but…this isn’t too bad. It’s almost like being on vacation.” Kyle said.

Maria smiled. “I do believe that it was me who suggested that we hide in plain sight by playing tourists. You can just go ahead and thank me now because I must say…this was a really good idea.”

“Ahhh…good ol’ Maria…modest as ever.” Alex quipped. “Seriously though, this really was a good idea. Remember when we were younger and we talked about taking the ultimate road trip after graduation? Well here we are…this is it. Sort of…”

“Oh I almost forgot about that! We were going to see the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Disney World…wow. We sort of gave up on dreams like that didn’t we?” Liz mused.

“I don’t know what you guys are talking about. I never gave up on any of my dreams. I mean yeah, I wanted to be a singer and tour the world with my two best friends by my side but hey…this is close enough.” Maria quipped with a roll of the eyes.

Kyle shook his head. “I can’t believe we’re actually enjoying ourselves right now. How weird is that? We’re on the run from…pretty much everyone. We’ll be spending the next six months or more living in tents…with our parents. You guys realize this might be the last chance we have to actually enjoy ourselves, right?” The group suddenly grew solemn at this reminder.

Further down the highway, Max, Michael, Isabel and Ava parked their SUV and prepared to go on a little hike of their own. Isabel was moaning about bugs, dirt and all things ‘outdoorsy’.

“Ugh…is it really necessary to go trudging through the wilderness? We can look like tourists just fine without getting all filthy.” Isabel grumbled.

Ava rolled her eyes. “You’ll be fine Iz…I promise. We’re all stressed out right now so maybe a little peace and quiet will do us some good. Who knows? You might even have a little fun.”

“Yeah…fun…” Isabel said distractedly, swatting a stray leaf off her shoulder.

Michael was slowly approaching the trail, looking around like a caged animal. His head whipped back and forth as though expecting to see someone pop out of the bushes at any moment.

“What’s up Michael?” Max asked.

“I’ve just got this feeling…I can’t kick it. Something’s not right.” Michael mumbled.

Max immediately tapped into his connection to Liz. He was trying to put on a brave face for the rest of the group but reality was making that a serious challenge. They all knew that they could be found by any one of their enemies at any moment. Sensing Liz’s serene presence not too far away, Max silently admonished himself for letting Michael’s sour mood get to him. They had to try to keep their fears at bay or all of their careful plans would just fall apart.

Max clapped Michael on the back with a nervous chuckle. “You’ve got the soldiers scattered all over this place. If someone were in trouble, we’d know about it already. You can sense Maria out there, right?” Off Michael’s reluctant nod, Max continued.

“Well then you know her group is all right. We’re obviously fine. You’ve got half a dozen guards tailing our parents. It’s OK to loosen up just this once Michael…really.” Max quipped. He was wearing his most convincing smile, hoping to put Michael’s mind at ease.

“Well if Michael thinks we’re in danger, maybe we should just go.” Isabel said with a secretive glint in her eyes. She knew darned well that Alex and her parents were all right but any opportunity to get back to their little slice of quasi civilization was welcome.

“Oh no you don’t! You’re only saying that because you don’t want to go on a hike. My crabby brother is just being his usual paranoid self and you’re going to make it worse.” Ava scolded.

Max smirked and tugged on Michael’s arm before he could launch into a moody tirade. Michael was naturally paranoid and Max had learned that distraction tactics seemed to work best to bring him out of a funk. He had watched Maria use that maneuver many times and was still stunned by the sheer simplicity of it.

“Come on guys…I think I see a better view up ahead.” Max announced.

The others followed and found a clearing just up the trail that provided an amazing view of the cavern. Ava gasped in awe. Even Michael and Isabel stopped grumbling long enough to appreciate the natural beauty. The four of them spent the next hour together in that clearing.

“Do you think this is how it was for us on Antar?” Isabel asked sadly. “Were we all close like this back then too?”

Ava cocked her head in thought for a moment. “I would think so…I hope so anyway. Our families had been close for ages.”

“I always trusted Michael and Isabel. I desperately wanted to trust Tess when she first came to town. Part of me was shouting, ‘she’s bad news, stay away’ but the other part of me felt like she was supposed to be a good guy…one of us. I guess on some level, we always knew we belonged together. It’s too bad Tess got to Roswell before you did, Ava. ” Max mused.

“I think I always knew that there was another one of us out there.” Isabel told Ava. “My parents said that when they first adopted us, I would cry out for someone every night in my sleep. They thought I was dreaming about my parents but after we met Michael, I assumed that I had been calling out for him. Maybe I was looking for both of you on some subconscious level.”

“I had dreams like that too. That’s why I thought Tess and Nasedo were on our side when we found out about them. I was so sure that they were the ones I had been looking for…” Michael said, shocking the others with his honesty. He usually wasn’t so open about things. Obviously Max’s distraction tactics were helping to lighten Michael’s mood a bit.

The snapping of twigs signaled that someone was approaching. Michael stood in front of the others and stuck his hand out defensively, ready to blast at a moment’s notice. Maria, Liz, Alex and Kyle came stumbling into the clearing and had to stifle a giggle at Michael’s attack pose.

Kyle threw both of his hands in the air. “We come in peace…don’t shoot!” He joked.

When they saw the flustered look on Michael’s face, the others broke into fits of laughter. Michael rolled his eyes with an annoyed grunt.

“It sure would be nice to be taken seriously once in a while you know.” Michael mumbled.

“Oh Michael, get off it. We take you seriously all the time…you’re just in a mood because you’re paranoid.” Isabel pointed out. Off Maria’s confused look, Isabel quickly recounted Michael’s earlier comments about being in danger.

“What did you mean ‘something’s not right’ Michael?” Maria asked in concern.

“I can’t explain it. I feel like we’ve been walking around with this dark cloud over our heads all day. It’s sort of like when you know a storm is coming before you even see the lightning…” Michael shook his head in frustration because he knew he probably wasn’t explaining it right.

“I want one of you to do that remote viewing thing to see where the dupes are.” He blurted out, pointing to Max and Liz.

“What?! Michael, if the dupes were here the guards would’ve alerted us already.” Max said in protest. The thought of trying to establish mental contact with Tess’ group almost made him feel physically ill.

"They were on campus with us for who knows how long but the guards never realized it. Tess could be mindwarping them again!" Michael argued.

“Lizzie…I know I shouldn’t even be asking you this but…will you try it?” Maria asked quietly. She knew she was probably overstepping just about every friendship boundary in the rulebook but something in Michael’s voice had her really worried.

Liz studied Maria for a long moment and then nodded in defeat. “Fine. I can’t guaranty this is going to work but if it does, you guys are going to owe me big time.”

Liz sat down on a cushy patch of grass in the middle of the clearing and closed her eyes in concentration. She tried for nearly five long, silent minutes. Finally she opened her eyes in frustration and said, “I’m not getting anything. They must be too far away.”

Michael shook his head in confusion but thanked her for trying anyway. “Thanks Liz. I guess that’s good news.” He mumbled.

The gang spent the rest of the morning following various trails that wound around the rim of the Grand Canyon. Michael became more quiet and withdrawn as the day progressed but nothing Maria did seemed to bring him out of it. As mid-afternoon started to roll around, the gang retreated back to their respective vehicles and headed back to camp.

At that very moment, Tess, Lonnie and Rath were flying down the highway in a flashy black Camero. They had been driving west all night, following the faint pull of the Royal Seals. With each passing mile, the pull got a little stronger, telling them they were headed in the right direction.

“I can’t believe that mousy little bitch tried to get into my head. What was she thinking?! She’s just a human!” Tess ranted furiously from the back seat.

“Shut up Tess. You blocked her so she saw nothing. Get over it.” Lonnie said irritably. She was beyond tired of listening to Tess’ endless ranting.

“You shut up Lonnie! I mean…her, of all people. I can’t believe she even tried it!” Tess continued.

“Both of you shut up! You’re giving me a headache!” Rath growled. “They’re getting suspicious. That’s why they’re looking for us. They can sense us somehow…”

“Yeah right,” Lonnie said with a snort. “They couldn’t sense us in the same room as them before…why would they start now?”

“Don’t mock me Lonnie. If you used your brain once in a while instead of your…other assets…you’d have a clue. They know we’re here now. They know they’re screwed so they’re more alert now. Remember, they have the same powers we do. If we can sense them, they can sense us.” Rath lectured.

Lonnie flashed a violent glare at her former lover. “Don’t get all high and mighty on me Rath. I am aware of their powers you ass. Ever since Kivar sent you off to that fancy schmancy training camp you’ve had this ego that won’t quit and I am so over listening to you talk just to hear your own voice.”

Tess interrupted, trying to get the conversation back on track. “We’re following their seals. We don’t have the royal seals and they’ve barely even started to tap into their powers. They can’t possibly know we’re coming.”

“They tried to get into your head, didn’t they? Trust me. Michael is me…with the power of the Royal Eight behind him. If there’s any of the original Rath left in him at all, he’ll know when danger is close.” Rath mumbled through gritted teeth.

The evil trio drove on in silence. They were about three hours away from their target’s camp, although it would take them longer to hone in on the exact location. It was only a matter of time before they completed their mission…the utter annihilation of the Royal Eight.

Timelord31 - I'm glad you liked the last few parts! Poor Michael's impulsive reputation is really messing up his credibility these days. It won't be that way for long though...

RhondaAnn - The gang is still figuring out how to use many of their newer powers. To make matters worse, they have other random powers sprouting up when they least expect it. (Maria's purple shield for example.) Because their powers are so unpredictible at times, they don't always realize that a 'feeling' can be more than just that. Hence, Michael sensing danger but the others brushing the feeling off as stress or general nervousness over the situation.

Jennifer24 - The Eight won't be joining up with the FBI against the dupes anytime soon. Nothing is ever that simple for the gang. Although, it certainly would be a good idea for them to join forces eventually...

Empress_luci - Welcome back! I'm glad you're still reading. :D You want hints, do you? Let's see...OK, here's one: Liz still has the power of premonition in this timeline but she doesn't know it yet. Her first 'real' premonition will change everything the gang thought they knew about their enemies.

tequathisy - Thanks for the thumbs up! The others are going to wish they had listened to Michael earlier...

Chapter 23: The Makings of a Good Leader

At the Arizona Trails Resort, the Roswell crew was beginning the second day of their Grand Canyon adventure. Everyone seemed to be much more relaxed than they had been the day before…everyone except for Michael that is.

As the others bustled around preparing a campfire breakfast, Michael sat stubbornly on a log nearby. The feeling of danger was so much worse than it had been the day before and no amount of gentle prodding by Max and Maria was helping. He had this desperate urge to take his family and run as far away as possible but he honestly didn’t know why. The frustrating part was if he couldn’t explain the feeling to himself, there was no way he could make the others understand either.

Up until now, Max and Michael had been trying to live up to their royal expectations. It was more than a little difficult to learn to be the leaders they once were though. The situation was completely different than it had been years ago on Antar. They weren’t the same people…not really. Michael had the respect of the soldiers from day one because of who he used to be, but living up to that role now was difficult. He was tired of flying by the seat of his pants, hoping he was making the right decisions. Act now; think later wouldn’t work for them anymore.

Amy noticed Michael’s dark mood and went over to sit next to him. “Why the long face Michael?” She asked.

Michael sighed. “I don’t feel safe here.” He answered bluntly.

Amy’s brow rose in surprise. Normally Michael wasn’t so forthcoming with his feelings. “Why? Are the soldiers concerned about something?” She prodded.

“No. It’s just…oh hell, I don’t know. For two days now I’ve felt like something bad is going to happen and I don’t know why. Liz did her little remote viewing trick yesterday to see if the dupes were nearby but she had no luck. They must’ve been too far away. It didn’t make me feel better though. The feeling is even stronger now than it was yesterday.” Michael confessed quickly.

Amy weighed her options carefully. She didn’t want to make him feel worse by dismissing his concerns but on the other hand, she didn’t want to fuel the fire either.

“Are you sure this isn’t just some kind of instinctual protective thing? The day before yesterday we were all running for our lives. Maybe this is like some kind of soldier’s instinct…like an internal state of high alert or something?” Amy asked gently.

Michael shrugged in frustration. “That’s part of the problem. I have no idea! I’m not a soldier. Maybe I was in that other life, but in this life I’ve had no training, no experience…nothing. There’s no good reason for me to feel this way, but I do anyway and I hate it.”

“You were not just a soldier back on Antar. You were the Master Commander. Top dog! I don’t believe for one second that you got that position just because you were from the Rathemere clan. Remember how Larek treated you when he figured out what was really going on here? He respected you guys…all of you. The four of you must have been really great because I get the impression that Larek doesn’t to give his trust to just anyone. You have that same greatness now…even Larek said so.” Amy said. She really believed Michael was someone very special and she wanted him to see it too.

Michael grunted in embarrassment. “If we were so great, how did Kivar win?”

Jim overheard Michael’s comments and decided it was time for him to step in and set a few things straight. He walked over and joined the conversation.

“Kivar won because he played dirty. Four people can’t protect an entire planet alone…especially if the enemy is determined to divide and conquer. You guys shut everyone else out, trying to protect both them and yourselves. It didn’t work. That doesn’t mean you guys were bad leaders though. It means you cared about your people, you were trying to help, and it didn’t work. Do you honestly think that’s the only time in history leaders made a bad choice?” Jim prodded.

“Did those other bad choices end in the enslavement of an entire planet?” Michael challenged sullenly. “We should’ve known better. We knew all about the Alpha system back then. We grew up there. We knew Kivar was bad news…yet we made the worst possible choice even with all that information. In this life, we don’t even have a fraction of that information. How the hell are we supposed to get it right this time if we couldn’t do it back then? If I can’t even figure out what’s going on in my own head, how am I supposed to lead anyone else? How could they ever rely on me to get it right?”

Jim sighed. “A good leader has to have faith in himself first…the rest will follow suit. Leaders aren’t born Michael; they’re made. There is some element of instinct involved, sure, but acting and reacting on sheer instinct doesn’t work. Good leaders learn how to use their gut feelings to analyze a situation. They figure out which gut feelings are worth acting on and which ones aren’t. So in this case, you feel like there is danger coming. Fine…so have faith in yourself that the feeling is there for a reason. Figure out where the feeling is coming from and do something about it.”

Michael thought it over for a moment. “I know this has nothing to do with the attacks from a couple days ago. This is new.”

“OK…well that’s a good start. Now, do you feel like this feeling is more general…like maybe you’re concerned that we might run into trouble eventually, or do you feel worried because you think something specific is going to happen soon?” Jim prodded with concern.

“This isn’t a general concern. I know we’ll run into more trouble eventually. That’s kind of inevitable. No…I feel like something is coming…like any minute now.” Michael said, starting to catch on. Jim was telling him to stop questioning himself and start assessing the situation. Was action necessary or not? Focus.

“Well there you go then. So what’s the next logical course of action?” Jim said with growing apprehension.

“I should ask the guards to do a wide sweep of the grounds. Look for anyone suspicious.” Michael said.

“Good choice. Will that be enough then? If the guards come back and give the all clear…will you feel better?” Jim asked.

Michael shook his head immediately. “Nope. I know something’s up. I know it. Plus, now we know they can be mindwarped so the dupes could be out there somewhere and they might not know it. I can’t just tell everyone to pack up and ship out though. They won’t listen.”

“Would it make you feel better if you guys joined your powers and had a little look around? I mean, maybe you all could try the remote viewing thingy or something. Then you could see for yourself. It wouldn’t hurt, right?” Amy suggested.

Michael’s eyes brightened. “Yeah…that could work.”

“Sounds like a plan then. Send the guards out, join powers, and then after you have more information, make a decision. You had a gut feeling, you decided it was important enough to act on and now you have a plan. That’s how leaders make decisions. It becomes almost like a reflex. You do it quickly, every time, and then you know that you covered all your bases and made the best possible decisions given the situation.” Jim said. Michael was growing right before his eyes and Jim felt almost like a proud father.

Michael called the soldiers over and told them to sweep the grounds. He explained that they were to assess the intentions of each and every outsider they found in the immediate vicinity. Then, Michael approached the rest of the gang and told them he wanted to join powers and look for the dupes. In true Michael fashion though, he didn’t really ask the others if they would help, nor did he use the word please at any point so there were immediate protests to the idea.

“You can’t just call us over and order us to join powers…especially right out in the open like this!” Isabel hissed.

“Are you really serious about this man?” Kyle asked in surprise.

Michael rolled his eyes. “Of course I’m serious! This is not just about me being paranoid. I know something’s up…I just don’t know what.” He insisted. Maria took his hand in support and subtly nodded indicating that she’d help.

“Not to be rude but, it seems a little weird that you would sense something that the rest of us can’t. If we were really in danger then why aren’t the guards aware of it? Why can’t any of us sense it? Maria has the same powers you do but she hasn’t mentioned anything out of the ordinary…” Isabel pointed out.

“I can’t answer that. I don’t know why I’m feeling this and you’re not but if you think about it, this isn’t the first time this has happened. There have been dozens of times I’ve felt like we were in danger but you and Max thought I was just being paranoid. Maybe it’s just some kind of weird soldier thing.” Michael said impatiently.

Max looked at Michael curiously. “We saw Lonnie teleport on campus and none of us knew that was possible. Obviously we have powers we haven’t discovered yet. Maybe this is one of them.”

Liz nodded. “Maybe the rest of us don’t sense anything because we don’t know how. It’s not like our powers came with a rulebook.”

“I’m in. It’ll be to our benefit to know where the dupes are anyway. It can’t hurt to try.” Alex said.

“Me too. If the dupes are anywhere near here, I want to know about it.” Maria added. Once Alex and Maria agreed to the idea, the others reluctantly started giving in too.

“Thanks…” Michael mumbled as they all sat down near the campfire.

The parents fanned out around the campsite to keep a lookout for outsiders as the eight joined hands and closed their eyes in concentration. Their connection with the dupes was almost instantaneous.

The evil trio was speeding down the road, just a few miles from the Roswell crew’s campground. They knew they would find the others within the next hour.

“We’re almost there! I can feel it!” Tess squealed with glee from the backseat.

“It’s about time.” Lonnie said in annoyance. “I am so sick of this planet. The faster we can get this done, and get back home, the better.”

Rath completely ignored them from his position in the driver’s seat. He had a bad feeling. Something was going to happen…something wasn’t right. The closer they got to the Roswell crew’s camp, the worse the feeling got. Out of nowhere, he was hit with a blinding pain in his temples.

All at once, Tess, Lonnie, and Rath screamed in agony. They gasped in unison as their car careened off the road and smashed into a tree.

Chapter 24: On the Road Again

There was a flurry of action at the Arizona Trails Resort. As one, the podsquad and crew scurried around packing up their tents and belongings at lightning speed. They didn’t bother discussing where they were going because they all knew that the second meeting point was Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

Max ran to the main lodge building and told the woman at the desk that his entire party would be ending their vacation early due to a family emergency. She nodded in understanding and Max was pretty sure that she’d bought his story. The last thing they needed was yet more suspicion directed their way.

Less than twenty minutes after the gang made contact with the dupes, they were all back on the road again headed for Wyoming. Michael grumbled about the current situation from his spot in the driver’s seat.

“I should’ve known! They were less than a mile away…you guys could’ve been killed!” Michael barked in frustration.

“Michael, you DID know. All day yesterday, and then today…you had that feeling. You knew. We should’ve listened to you.” Maria said.

Maria was secretly frustrated that Michael had sensed the danger but no one else had. She wanted to know why. If she and Michael were supposed to share the same powers, how had she not known they were in danger? If Isabel had said she sensed danger, the others would’ve listened right away because she was the mental powerhouse. Michael never had strong mental powers so why of all people was it him to sense the danger?

Maria mentally called out for Kaden, Michael’s guard. He appeared quickly and squeezed onto the bench seat between Michael and Maria as their truck sped down the road.

“Why didn’t you sense the dupes Kaden?” Maria asked.

“Ma’am, we cannot sense the others the same way we can with you. They do not have the royal seals and we do not have the power of the foursquare to enhance our senses. I am very sorry.” Kaden explained quickly.

“How did they find us so quickly?” Maria asked in confusion. “We were so sure that it would take them longer to figure out where we were…if they figured it out at all.”

“They can track your royal seals, much the same way as we can. We didn’t anticipate them being able to track you with such speed and accuracy though.” Kaden answered.

In the backseat, Ava’s face went pale. “Oh my God. It’s because we’re all together…isn’t it? The signal or whatever is stronger when we’re all together like this.”

Stronger together…” Kyle murmured as the literal meaning of their pet phrase struck him.

Kaden looked down in sadness. “Yes ma’am, it is.”

“I want you to go to Max and tell him what you just told us. We’ll figure out a way to let the others know.” Michael said, slumping in frustration. Kaden immediately teleported out of the truck and headed straight for Max’s SUV.

“I’ll call my mother and then she can call the others. We’re good at the whole saying everything without really saying anything kind of thing.” Maria rambled. She knew that it was very likely that their cell phones were being monitored, so she was going to make the call short and subtle.

“Hi Mom! Look, I only have a second to talk but I thought we should resolve that argument we had earlier. The whole problem is, we just spend way too much time together. We have this tendency to amplify the little things and make them into these huge beacons for conflict.” Maria said cryptically.

On the other end of the line, Amy blinked in confusion. She decided to just go with the flow, hoping Maria would elaborate. “Right…we have spent a lot of time together lately. Umm…I’m sorry about that argument we had. Was there anything else you wanted to tell me?”

“I’m sorry too, mom. I’ve really got to go now though. I just wanted to tell you that. I’ll talk to you soon, OK?”

“Sure honey. We’ll figure it all out later. Bye.”

Kyle leaned forward expectantly. “Did she understand?”

Maria shook her head, no. “She’ll get it though. She said ‘we’ll figure it all out later.’ That means she’s going to pass the message on to Jim and they’ll work it out together.”

Amy clicked off her cell phone and stared out the window deep in thought. Jim looked over at her in anticipation. “Well? What did she say?” He asked.

“I seriously have no idea this time.” Amy said. She reiterated the whole conversation for Jim, hoping he would have some kind of insight into the cryptic message.

Jim rubbed his eyes in confusion. “She said you guys spend too much time together but we both know that’s not true so it must have been a hint. Did she really use the exact words ‘amplify’ and ‘beacon’?”

Amy nodded. “Wait a minute…didn’t Larek say that the seals were sort of like a homing beacon to other aliens?”

Jim’s eyes widened in understanding. “The kids have these invisible seals that other aliens can sense. They’re always saying how they’re stronger together…they’re stronger because the seals are stronger. When all of the seals are together, the signal is amplified…which leads the conflict, the bad guys, straight to us.”

“But they can’t split up, Jim! It just won’t work…they need each other. We need each other!” Amy pleaded.

“I know, Amy…I know. We’ll figure this out after we get to Yellowstone, OK? Why don’t you call the Parkers and the Whitmans and do your ‘code speak’ thing? They’ll want to know what’s going on. Remember, don’t stay on the line very long and be vague. They’ll figure it out.”

A few hours later, the group met up at a busy truck stop café for supper. Max eyed Michael sadly as they approached the entrance.

“Michael, there’s something I need to tell you…” Max began.

“If it has anything to do with splitting up so the dupes can’t find us again then I already know Maxwell.” Michael grunted.

Max stopped walking and turned to face Michael. “That’s not it. I wanted to tell you, I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you yesterday. We should’ve taken you seriously and we didn’t. If we had listened to you we would’ve been long gone before the dupes got anywhere near us.”

“That’s not true and you know it.” Michael said bluntly. “We would’ve still been there because we’re not thinking straight. Yeah, we talk and we make plans but…we can’t always wait for the group consensus. We’re leaders and we all have our specialties in this thing. We need to learn when to trust our own instincts and when to trust others. There’s going to come a time when one of us has to make a decision that the others might not like but that doesn’t mean that the decision doesn’t need to be made. It just means that we all have to be able to trust each other enough to accept it.”

Max was dumbstruck. That was more words than Michael had ever strung together at one time before. Surprisingly, Max agreed wholeheartedly. He was just stunned that the revelation had come from Michael.

“You’re right. We do have our own individual strengths and weaknesses. That doesn’t mean we have to stop listening to each other though. That just means that we have to start trusting each other more…like I should’ve trusted your opinion more yesterday when you were worried about our safety. I don’t know what I’m doing here anymore than you do and I messed up.” Max confessed sadly.

Michael smiled cryptically. “Someone pretty smart once told me, you have to have faith in yourself first…then the rest will follow. Have a little faith Maxwell.”

Max looked up, intrigued by Michael’s sudden change in demeanor. “So we’re OK then?” He asked.

Michael nodded. “Yeah, we’re OK. We’re not doing that gushy hug thing though so don’t even think about it.”

“Well that’s a relief! You’re really not my type anyway Michael.” Max laughed.

With that, the guys headed into the diner to find the others. The group had a very subdued dinner at a couple of booths in the far corner. They all knew how the dupes had found them but no one was willing to discuss the possibility of splitting up. The very idea left them all speechless. Each and every one of them was secretly trying to find another way to work things out while simultaneously thinking about how the groups should be split up if they couldn’t come up with a better plan. After their quick, quiet dinner, the group all filed back out to their vehicles and continued on to Yellowstone.

In the office of the Director of the FBI in Washington, DC, Peter Adams was pacing a hole clear through his lush navy carpet.

“What the hell happened?!” He yelled. “They got spooked and ran again…I want to know why!”

“Sir, our surveillance indicates that the imposters are able to track the Subjects, possibly in a psychic manner. One of the guardians said, and I quote: ‘They can track your royal seals’.”

Agent Ford thumbed quickly through his notes. “Then Ava said: ‘the signal is stronger when we’re together’.”

Agent Angela Garrett shook her head in wonder. “Sir, what little information we have indicates that they have a highly evolved nervous system. Their brains are most likely much more advanced than ours are. It is quite possible that the ‘royal seals’ they speak of are actually some kind of detectible wavelength of…well…of thought. I suspect they’re like mental birthmarks of some kind.”

“You’re telling me that the doubles are using their psychic powers to track some invisible psychic brand these kids have in their heads?” Adams asked in outrage.

Garrett frowned. “Sir, I know it’s a little far-fetched but so far, all of our evidence points in that direction. I’m just saying that it is a scientific possibility based on what we know about their anatomy and…”

Adams cut her off with an impatient wave. “It’s not that I doubt your research Garrett. My problem is…not only are they more technologically advanced than we are but you’re telling me that they’re probably smarter too. On top of that, we know they’re physically stronger and apparently they’re psychic too? This is a problem…this is a BIG problem!”

“I think we should approach the Subjects. They know about our presence now…maybe we could help each other. They need protection and we need answers.” Serena boldly suggested.

Agent Harrison immediately protested. “Absolutely not! They don’t trust us and we aren’t 100% sure we can trust them either.”

“They’ve shown us no signs that they are violent. When threatened, they run. When they’re frightened, they hide. They’re pacifists!” Serena insisted.

“That may be true but we still don’t know the whole story about why they’re here, where they came from or who it is that they’re running from. We don’t really know that we can trust them until we have those answers.” Harrison pointed out.

“I understand that. I really do, but the fact of the matter is…if we keep them in the dark, then we’re in the dark too. They’re the only ones that have the answers to those questions and if we don’t find a way to work with them, instead of around them, we all lose. If they were a threat to us, they would’ve had their guards lodge some sort of offensive when they discovered our presence on campus. They didn’t. They’re not violent…they’re just scared, and that’s partly our fault.” Serena argued.

Agent Ford cut in. “They already pegged Harrison as FBI back on the campus. It sounds like they still equate ‘FBI’ with ‘the enemy’. Direct contact from us might provoke them to defend themselves.”

“We don’t know that it’s safe to make contact with them yet. You’re the best profiler we’ve ever had Serena, and you know that I always trust your judgment, but we have to follow the book on this one. We’ll revisit the idea after we’ve had more time to observe their movements.” Director Adams began.

“We’ll continue observing both groups from afar. I want any information you guys can get. Harrison, your team is in charge of getting us some intel on the imposters. I want to know how dangerous those guys really are. Serena, your team will stick with the Roswell kids. Do not, under any circumstances, approach either group directly. Clear?” Adams ordered.

Two hours north of the Arizona Trails Resort, the dupes were speeding furiously down the road in their newly restored Camero. All three of them were livid that the pod squad had been able to invade their minds and find their location so easily. They hadn’t even had a chance to try blocking them out before the mental invasion forced their car off the road.

Between the violent crash and Rath’s temper tantrum that immediately followed, the car had nearly been reduced to a useless pile of rubble. Tess healed their injuries and Lonnie fixed up the car. Rath neutralized a passerby who saw too much, leaving a glowing silver handprint on the man’s chest for all to see. Within an hour, the trio was back on the road, following the faint signal of the royal seals again.

Rath called for two of the skins and ordered them to meet him at the Countryside Diner off Highway 80. He knew that they would need a major change of plans if they were going to catch up to the Roswell gang now. The skins found Rath, Lonnie and Tess waiting impatiently for them at the diner less than twenty minutes later.

“We’re going to find a place near Salt Lake City and you guys are going to go fetch the royal brats for us.” Rath said, addressing the skins.

They nodded. “Yes Sir.”

“We’re just going to sit here while they go after the others?!” Tess hissed in disbelief.

“Yes, we are. They know we’re on their tails now. They know they can spy on us whenever they want if they join their powers too. There’s no way we can get anywhere near them if they know we’re coming…so we send the skins.” Rath growled.

Tess turned to the skins. “Do not kill them. I want them brought back alive…got it?” She barked.

The skins looked to arrogantly over to Rath. Tess was not their Queen and her orders fell on deaf ears. Lonnie barely even earned a fraction of civility from the skin soldiers either because they knew why Kivar really kept her around. It certainly wasn’t for her sparkling diplomatic skills or her stunning intellect. They took orders from Kivar and Rath alone…no one else mattered.

Rath grinned. “Yeah…rough em’ up all you want, but bring them back alive.”

In a beat up old Ford Escort just outside of Yellowstone National Park, a woman was listening intently to an earpiece attached to her laptop. She grinned in satisfaction as she heard Rath ordering his minions to go after the Royal Eight.

“Let the games begin…” Courtney murmured with a smile.

I couldn't resist squeezing in just one more chapter to make up for the big delay in updates recently.

Chapter 25: Old Faithful

The podsquad and crew met back up again in the heart of Yellowstone National Park right in front of Old Faithful. They had taken different routes and doubled back frequently to throw off anyone who might be trying to track their group. Finally, just after dawn they entered the park. After so many hours in the car, they were all relieved to get a chance to stretch their legs and catch some fresh air.

Max, Liz, Isabel and Alex arrived first and took seats along the viewing deck in front of the geyser. They had a birds-eye view of anyone approaching. There were enough other tourists gathered around to blend in with easily but not so many that they couldn’t see the others arrive.

The Parkers arrived shortly thereafter with Philip and Dianne in tow. They subtly grabbed an open spot on the viewing platform next to their kids. The parents exchanged relieved smiles when they saw that their kids had made it to the meeting point without incident.

Fifteen minutes passed before the next group filed in. Michael, Maria, Kyle and Ava approached slowly, knowing that their arrival would most likely boost the signal from their seals to dangerous levels again. It was a bittersweet reunion.

Jim and Amy arrived next, and the Whitmans showed up less than two minutes later. They were all together again, blending flawlessly in with the rest of the tourists. Amy couldn’t resist the urge to scoop Maria and Ava into a crushing hug.

“I was afraid you guys wouldn’t be here,” she whispered.

Maria suddenly looked very serious. “I’m not leaving here without you mom,” she whispered back.

The group fell back into their ‘tourist’ role rather quickly and made an effort to visit a few of the other geysers near Old Faithful before setting out to find the nearest campground. All of the campgrounds in the park were full so they were forced to find a site in the nearby town of Gardiner, Montana.

The campground was more secluded than most. Their adjoining sites were spacious enough for all of the tents and while still leaving ample room for a big campfire in the center. The gang had avoided the subject of their seals during the drive up from Arizona but they couldn’t any longer.

The group hunkered down by the fire and got to work fixing a simple lunch of canned chili. Jeff was the first one to break the uncomfortable silence.

“I need to know what our options are here. We all knew we couldn’t stay together forever…not a group this size but…” Jeff shrugged helplessly.

“I think we should gather the soldiers and lay all our cards on the table. We can’t just keep running around blind. This obviously isn’t going to work.” Maria said boldly.

The others nodded in agreement. The soldiers responded to the gang’s mental summons immediately and appeared quietly into the campground. Isabel and Ava gestured for them to gather around.

“The signal or whatever from our seals is stronger when we’re all together like this, right?” Isabel asked, getting straight to the point. Off their nods, she continued.

“So how do these seals work then? I mean, can we turn them off somehow? Can we block others from sensing them?” She asked.

Connor stepped forward. “The seals are a biological part of you. They cannot be removed. You can temporarily block others from sensing the pull of the seals, but I don’t think it’s possible to block everyone, everywhere from sensing them.”

“Do we all have to split up before the signal gets weaker or does it diminish when even one of us is away from the others?” Liz asked.

“Each individual seal is detectible. All soldiers are trained to detect the royal seals and there are many civilians who are sensitive enough to identify them as well. The foursquares boost the intensity of the seals’ pull exponentially, and when both foursquares are together, the pull is nearly tangible.” Kaden explained.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to split up individually though. We’d be more vulnerable and we’d lose track of each other too easily.” Michael commented, looking to the soldiers for input.

“Sir, the seals were less detectible when you were traveling in the cars. Each time, you were less than 10 miles apart. Perhaps it would be sufficient to split the foursquares between two separate campsites.” Suggested Dillan, Kyle’s guardian.

Ava’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. “If we can weaken the signal a little without actually splitting up, maybe we can throw our enemies off for a while.”

Alex nodded in agreement. “I’m worried that we’re all too inexperienced with our powers to be too far apart right now. We’re OK at using some of our powers…when we have time to concentrate on it…but how about in a life or death situation?”

“So far we know that Nuclear Deluca can hold her own…so can Michael. Liz and Max mustered some pretty impressive blasts at that last practice session in Roswell too I guess. As for the rest of us though…I don’t think Alex’s dreamwalks will phase the enemy much and I’m not very good at Ava’s fire thing yet so, we definately have to stay close.” Kyle said in agreement.

“We’ve made a lot of progress with our powers so far and I know for a fact that we have other powers just waiting to be discovered. Look at Maria’s shield and Lonnie’s teleporting thing. That tells us that Maria and Michael should be able to make shields like Max and I do. Isabel and Alex ought to be able to learn teleportation…” Liz said with a shrug, trying to be optimistic.

“I think we should go with Dillan’s suggestion.” Max added. “We can stay within the same parks and travel together but maybe spending more time apart would slow the dupes down some. If we can just stay a step ahead of them…”

“There’s one problem with that plan Maxwell. The dupes have to know we’re on to them now. They won’t come for us in person…they’ll send the skins. We won’t be able to use the remote viewing trick on the skins because we’ll have no idea who to look for. We’ll never know how close they are.” Michael pointed out.

“How can we know that for sure though? They were never all that smart in the past…” Isabel pointed out.

“I’m positive they’ll send the skins now. I would…” Michael said bluntly.

Kyle threw in his two cents. “I think we should try the separate camp thing here in Yellowstone and see what happens. Michael sensed it when danger was coming last time…maybe he’ll be able to do that again.”

“I don’t think we should count on my instincts alone on this one. Our powers seem to randomly come and go whenever they feel like it. I haven’t figured out how to make a shield but Maria has…Future Max said Liz is supposed to get premonitions but she hasn’t had one yet in this timeline. I sensed the dupes, but Maria didn’t. What I’m saying is…I don’t think it’s a good idea rely too much on our powers right now. We need to use those as a last resort.” Michael pointed out.

“I hate to say it, but I think I agree with Michael on this one.” Jeff Parker said reluctantly. “Splitting up is a bad idea, but staying too close might not work either. Those skins are tough…I saw it with my own eyes. They can blast just like you guys.”

“Guys…it’s one or the other. We can’t stay together without being ‘too close’ and we can’t split up without…you know…splitting up.” Maria said with a hint of frustration. She looked at Michael in surprise, catching on to a fleeting thought in his mind. As she looked deeper, she saw his plan and gave him a nod of support.

Michael looked at Jim and then Max nervously. It was now or never. He was going to pull rank and make a suggestion that the others weren’t going to like. Hopefully Max would support his decision because the safety of the group was supposed to be Michael’s area of expertise. He and Maria were expected to play the role of Master Commanders one day on Antar. If he was going to be any kind of leader, then it was time to step up to the plate. He had Maria’s support…now he just needed to explain his plan to the others.

“We need to split up the camps. Not only that, I think we need to split up the foursquares too.” Michael began. There were immediate protests from the others but he continued on anyway.

“Look, I get that we’re more vulnerable without the power of the foursquare to back us up but…we’re less vulnerable if they can’t find us. Our strength has always been hiding in plain sight. So that’s what we’ll do. We’ll have separate camps, but never so far away from each other that we lose touch. The power of the foursquares boosts the signal from the seals. The only rational thing to do is, separate the foursquares. If they find us; they can't hurt us.” Michael explained. He saw Jim and Amy give him a nod of encouragement out of the corner of his eye.

Ava looked up at her brother in surprise. “So we would have to split up by couple then, right? If we can’t have a foursquare in either group, each couple has to stay together. So who goes with who?”

Maria answered that question herself. “The safest option would be to have Isabel and Alex camp with Michael and I. Then you and Kyle would go with Liz and Max.”

Philip cocked his head in surprise. His children were going to be split up? He didn’t see how that was necessary.

“Do you mind if I ask why Max and Isabel have to be split up?” Philip asked.

“Because that’s the safest alternative to having the foursquares together. It’s a matter of distributing your strongest powers throughout both groups so that one group isn’t more vulnerable than the other. Maria and I have the strongest destructive powers…blasting, manipulating lightning, et cetera. Max, Liz, Ava and Kyle each have some active powers, but their strengths are mainly passive in nature. Isabel and Alex have less destructive capabilities, but they excel in the mental arena.” Michael said confidently.

“Oh! So Max and I can blast a little and Ava can do that fire thing. Put us together and you have a stronger team.” Liz said, catching on to the plan.

Isabel frowned at Michael. “So what…Alex and I go with you guys because you don’t think we could defend ourselves otherwise?”

“No Iz. You go with us because you guys have the best mental powers…and ours suck. You’ve healed minor injuries before so we know you guys can heal too. Maria and I don’t know if we can heal at all. Each group will have healers, plenty of firepower and a wide range of mental talents. It’s the only way we’ll be able to split up safely.” Michael explained carefully.

“So we’re all going to be in the same campgrounds though, right? Just not the same campsites?” Dianne Evans prodded.

Maria nodded. “Yup. We can’t be too far away from each other with the foursquares split up. We’ll have to stay close enough to help each other out if there’s an emergency…but that means that we’ll have to move around more often. We won’t be able to spend a full week anywhere if we’re going to be that close to each other.”

“How are we going to do that here then? All of the other campgrounds were full. There’s no way we’ll be able to find another campground that has two sites open…not here.” Gloria Whitman asked.

“We won’t.” Max answered simply. He was respecting Michael and Maria’s decision on this and he wanted them to know it.

“We’ll have to move on tomorrow morning at the latest. Now might be a good time to choose the next two meeting points. We’ll need to choose wisely. We need to make sure we pick places that are more likely to have two or more open campsites…preferably not right next to each other either.” Max explained. He saw Michael shoot him a quick look of gratitude for the support.

The group nodded. The Evans parents were at least satisfied that they would be able to venture freely back and forth between their kids’ campsites to visit. They wouldn’t have to travel with one while worrying about the other for weeks on end. This wasn’t going to be a very big change really. It was simply an attempt to outsmart the constraints of the seals.

After quite a bit of discussion, the next two meeting points were chosen. The next morning they would head out for Badlands National Park in South Dakota. It was a popular tourist spot that the Whitmans were familiar with but not so popular that the campgrounds would be packed like at Yellowstone. After two or three days there, the groups would leave for Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.

The gang was pretty confident that their plans would work, although they were nervous about spending so much time apart. They would be traveling to the same areas, sleeping in the same campgrounds and touring the same places, but they would be doing it all in two separate groups. It was definitely going to be awkward in the beginning.

At a hotel barely five miles away from the Roswell crew’s hideout, Courtney listened in on their plans through the bugging device she had carefully planted on Mr. Parker.

“Well I’ll be damned!” She muttered. “Seems like they’re finally starting to get a clue…”

She listened intently to the rest of the plans with an expression of concern. What did this new development mean? When they finally realized their full power and potential, what would happen?

“Like they always say…absolute power corrupts absolutely…” She whispered with a frown.

Hello all! Many thanks to those of you have been so patient for updates.

sylus27 - I love the way you think. Imagine how shocked Liz would be if she met Serena in person and found out that her 'future friend' was really an FBI agent!

StarRyder - Thanks! Yes, the podsquad and crew will be developing more powers in the very near future...some of them will be quite surprising and others will be a bit 'familiar'. :D

RhondaAnn - I'm going to be a real party pooper and avoid all Courtney questions like the plague. She's a real wild card in this fic and trying to figure out who she is, what she is and who she's working with is part of the fun. I let one thing slip I guess...Courtney has first hand knowledge of the 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' concept and it has left her a bit jaded.

Jennifer24 - Stupid to send the skins after the Eight? Absolutely. But then again...it was Rath's plan sooo...

ultimatepickupline, Timelord31 and tequathisy - Thanks for reading! I hope you guys enjoy these next two chapters. :D

Chapter 26: World History

For two uneventful months, the Roswell crew successfully eluded the dupes and their skin soldiers. The first few weeks after the split were awkward and a bit nerve wracking. They were so close to each other yet they couldn’t reunite the groups again without risking exposure. Their prepaid cell phones weren’t very useful either because with the FBI out there somewhere, they had to keep all calls short and vague.

Michael, Maria, Isabel and Alex traveled with the Whitmans. Max, Liz, Ava and Kyle traveled with the Parkers. Jim and Amy didn’t want to separate, but with Kyle and Maria in different groups, it left them in a tough spot. In the end, they struck a deal with the Phillip and Dianne that allowed each couple to switch back and forth between groups every few weeks. It worked out quite well for everyone.

At both camps, the groups found that they finally had time to concentrate a little bit on their Antarean studies again. Because they were on the run and didn’t have access to the modified laptops they’d been using to scan Larek’s disks, they had to rely on the soldiers for information. Generally, a couple times a week they’d sit down with a few of the guards and have an informal lesson on Antarean history and customs.

“Max and Michael’s families ran the entire show on Antar for centuries, right? How could such a small group of people handle all that? I can’t imagine trying to micromanage an entire planet…much less an entire star system.” Maria asked. She had been trying to wrap her mind around that one since the day they all read the translation of the Book.

“Think about it in terms of your current situation for a moment. You currently have over sixteen people traveling around the country, in two separate groups…together, but not. Now, the eight of you have this circle of trust that allows you to make coherent decisions that benefit the entire group, even though you are not all physically together. Imagine for a moment what would happen if all sixteen of you were making decisions independently…with no coordination from the whole. We’d be scattered aimlessly around the nation. In the most basic sense, the Royal Families were like the coordinators. They made sure that the individual governments operated in an orderly manner and in times of crisis, they were the mediators who helped the people forge an agreement.” Kaden tried to explain.

“So basically the Zandros and Rathemere families were equivalent to CEOs here on Earth. The CEO doesn’t make all the decisions or do all the work. He just makes the big decisions and oversees the work of all the other managers.” Alex said with a little sigh of relief.

Connor smiled. “That would be fairly accurate. Each planet has a royal family of its own that would serve the ‘executive management’ function. Together, the five planets make up the Royal Antarean Empire. The royal families on Antar were like the ‘executive managers’ of the entire corporation…the Empire.”

Michael smirked. “I guess that would explain where Isabel got her bossy streak…”

Isabel thumped Michael on the arm and then turned to Connor. “I want to hear a little bit more about Antarean society and traditions…before Kivar came along of course. Tell us about the people.”

Kaden smiled. “Well that would be quite a tall order ma’am. There is a lot to tell.”

“It's really not necessary to call me ma'am, Kaden." Isabel said, blushing. "How about you start with some of the more basic things, like how Antarean society is organized? Were the social classes divided as distinctly as they are on Earth?”

“In any society I think you will find that the citizens just naturally choose to surround themselves with people they have the most in common with. In monarchical societies, the divisions can often be quite extreme but thankfully, that was not the case on Antar.” Connor said.

Kaden nodded in agreement. “Social circles on Antar are organized more on the basis of geographical location than they are by wealth or education. All Antarean schools offered exactly the same curriculum regardless of financial or geographical differences. Whereas soldiers and production workers are largely underpaid and unappreciated here on Earth, they are revered just as greatly as landowners and businessmen on Antar. Over the centuries, our society has learned that it can flourish only by the combined efforts of all the citizens.”

Isabel smiled. “Amazing! I guess it does make perfect sense. If all of the citizens were considered integral parts of society, then really, the only major differences left would be regional. What about the ‘nobles’ then? Our Book mentioned that the royal families generally mated with noble people outside their own houses. Where do they come in?”

“The families closest to the royals, both geographically and personally, were considered nobility of sorts. The Royal Families were revered above all others of course, so if the Royals saw fit to invest their friendship and trust in others, those people were seen as uniquely important in society. The assumption was, anyone that close to the Royal Families must be special to have earned such trust.” Connor said.

“Wow. They respect us enough to trust complete strangers just because we talked to them. Why? I’ve read the histories Larek sent and I understand that the royal families did great things in the past, but who’s to say that someone else couldn’t have done those same things just as well?” Asked Michael.

Kaden smiled. “I believe you have just answered your own question. The Royals were always humble. They never expected overt forms of worship or veneration. They were well aware that their job, as crucial as it was, could be done by others. They never hesitated to listen to the input of the people and they always tried to put the needs of the people above their own. There are very few who could give of themselves so greatly without expecting something in return. As Maria suggested earlier, your job is immense and to do it unconditionally, without pretense, is worthy of the greatest respect and admiration.”

There was silence around the camp as the ‘students’ considered what Kaden had just told them. It sounded so deceptively simple. Go to Antar, be yourself and everything will be fine. If only they could believe that was true. Alex decided to plow on with the questioning because there was still so much they had left to learn and now wasn’t quite the time to get lost in their own thoughts and fears.

“What about technology? For example, what was the standard transportation like?” He asked.

“Within each region, people generally traveled by foot. To get from one region to another, the people mainly relied on solar powered vehicles. They are a bit smaller and more aerodynamic than the vehicles humans use but they have a similar function. For safety reasons, their top speed is equivalent to your 50 miles per hour.” Connor said.

Michael looked surprised. “Huh. I expected hover cars or something like that. Something a little more…you know…high tech.”

Kaden laughed. “I suppose you could call them hover cars. They do not rely on wheels for forward motion. They operate using an anti-gravity propulsion system.”

“Wow! Do families have computers? Is there anything like the Internet on Antar?” Alex asked excitedly.

“On Antar, microcomputers are integrated within the home itself. Yes, there are workstations where you can perform daily tasks and it is possible to utilize the planetary network for leisure but the workstation itself is tied in with the…I believe you would call it the mainframe, in the palace itself. Because workstation access is present in all homes, families aren’t forced to purchase expensive individual units.”

Isabel’s eyes brightened. “That’s just another part of the plan to keep everyone on equal footing, isn’t it? If people don’t need to spend money on things like computers, they aren’t really luxuries… no one is singled out for not being able to afford one.”

Maria suddenly interrupted. “Do people even use money…like paper money, on Antar?”

Kaden shook his head. “Antar operates on a debit system supervised by the National Depository. Private citizens from each region are appointed by the Royal Families to work at the Depository, accounting for all credits earned through trade agreements or other work efforts. Every individual who offers product for trade or performs a service in the public sector receives credits, which are applied to their financial accounts. The citizens can then use their credits to purchase goods and services in any market place on the planet. The markets use a type of DNA authentication procedure to verify the identity of the citizen, and the purchases are deducted from their account.”

Maria’s jaw dropped. “Do you have any idea how complicated that sounds?! I would have no idea where to even begin ‘accounting’ for people’s debits and credits or whatever! Thank God Max took those economics classes last semester…” She rambled nervously.

“Actually, it’s a really good idea when you think about it. They don’t have different currency for each region like we do on Earth. And more importantly, the DNA authentication thing would prevent identity theft and robbery for the most part. Seems like a simple way to keep the peace to me.” Michael said with a shrug.

“These things you’re telling us about…are any of these procedures still in place, or has Kivar destroyed them all? Is there even such a thing as free trade left on Antar anymore?” Alex asked.

Connor looked away. “Those traditions were lost with the Royal Four.”

Maria sat up straighter. “Well then those traditions will have to be brought back. I have no idea how the original Royal Families came up with all this stuff but honestly, it sounds like it was working perfectly. I mean, the people had everything they needed, right? The Royals had this great system and the people were happy. Sounds like they laid the path out for us, clear as day. When we go to Antar and kick Kivar off the throne, all we’ll have to do is put everything back to the way it was and things will fine.”

Isabel sighed. “I don’t think it’ll be that easy, but at least we know what the end result should be. It gives us kind of a goal to work for I guess. It might take a while to get there but at least we have a shot at putting things back together now that we know what worked back then.”

In Max’s camp, there was a similar question and answer session in progress. Max and Liz were still reeling over the fact that someday they would be considered the King and Queen of an entire planet. Ava and Kyle, on the other hand, were trying to figure out their place in this whole thing.

“What is the population on Antar?” Liz asked.

Jonas looked down in thought for a moment. “Before Kivar took the throne, the population was approximately 8 billion…not much larger than your Earth. Since then, I would estimate that the population has dropped to perhaps 4 billion or less.”

Ava gasped. “Please tell me that the difference is due to people leaving, looking for safer lands or something. Kivar didn’t really kill over 4 billion people, did he?!”

“Few people have made it off Antar alive. During the war, the people stayed because they didn’t want to abandon their homes. They thought the Master Commander would call them to service, so they waited. After Kivar killed the Royal Families, he quickly swept through the population, killing all those in charge. His attacks were swift and by the time the people realized they needed to leave, it was too late.” Talia said softly.

Max’s heart broke. “They stayed because they thought we would need them?”

“Please don’t be offended Sir. The people had nowhere to go, even if they had left earlier. Kivar had a hybrid army, composed of citizens from all five of the Alpha System planets. Without a safe destination, their only hope was to rely on the Royal Four to restore order on Antar. On one hand, Commander Rath’s army was overwhelmed and he needed more soldiers. On the other, he no longer knew if he could trust soldiers from the neighboring planets. Many of them were fighting with Kivar already. And with the Royal Four divided, they couldn’t use the foursquare to subdue Kivar’s men. Please don’t think you are to blame Sir. All blame lies with Kivar alone.” Jonas explained.

“So what did I do during all this? I mean, our Book said that Ava was in charge of judicial matters, but what exactly did that entail? Did I even fight for my people or did I sit in some office somewhere waiting for the bad guys to get caught?” Ava asked suddenly. Her face was twisted into a frown because she couldn’t bare the thought that she did nothing while her people were slaughtered and her home fell to ruins.

Talia looked up sharply. “You had a pivotal role in the defense of Antar ma’am! You were both Commander Rath’s second in command and the Queen. When you weren’t working with King Zan and Princess Vilandra to negotiate a peaceful solution with the other planets, you were training new soldiers for war. The Royal Four died protecting their people…not the other way around.”

There was a moment of silence as the group thought about everything they had just been told. Kyle couldn’t get past this niggling little voice at the back of his head telling him that something wasn’t adding up. Finally, he realized what the problem was.

“The book that Kira and Rayna sent to Earth said that Kivar recruited his interplanetary army in secret. It said that the Royal Four were basically taken by surprise and killed right off the bat. How could they have known it was coming and been fighting against it if they were taken by surprise?” Kyle asked.

“The Royal Four knew Kivar was planning something. They were completely aware that ties between the five planets were fracturing faster than they could fix them and Kivar was somehow related to the whole mess. It was quite obvious that the System was being strained to the breaking point. Small skirmishes broke out on all five planets and quickly turned into large battles. Commander Rath had men stationed all over the System in an effort to protect the non-hostile citizens. The war for control of the Empire started long before Kivar attacked Antar.” Jonas pointed out.

Liz decided to turn the conversation back around to something a little less upsetting before their ‘learning session’ turned into a giant ‘moping session’. They wouldn’t learn anything helpful if they kept letting their feelings get in the way. If they didn’t learn all that they could before it was time to go to Antar, they would be of no use to the cause or the people.

“Tell us a little about Antarean geography. What were the lands like? What kind of regions did the people settle in?” Liz asked.

“Antar is quite similar to Earth on a molecular and geophysical level ma’am.” Talia said. “There is a slightly higher percentage of helium, oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere on Antar. The increased helium and oxygen create a violet hue in the daytime sky. The excess carbon dioxide results in higher ground temperatures and very lush vegetation. An ample supply of ozone in the upper atmosphere counterbalances the effects of the carbon dioxide to some extent, creating a year around tropical climate without the global warming fluctuations observed here on Earth.”

Liz’s eyes sparked with excitement. “That’s why you have virtually no illness on Antar isn’t it? The atmosphere protects you from the damaging radiation from your sun but the extra carbon dioxide keeps you warm. I’m picturing a lush rainforest scene…maybe like you would find in South America. Is that close?”

Jonas smiled. “That would be fairly accurate I suppose. Antar shares many of the common geologic features you would find on Earth. They have oceans, mountain ranges, rift zones formed by ancient fault lines, et cetera. Whereas Earth has seven continents, Antar has twelve, surrounded by many other small islands. Aside from some noticeable differences in color and vegetation, the planets are quite similar to the naked eye.”

“Is that why Kivar’s people can survive on Antar but not on Earth? Because of all the extra helium or whatever in the air out there?” Kyle asked suddenly.

Talia nodded. “Many of the people of Eros require a very specific concentration of carbon dioxide, helium and sulfur to survive. Their race evolved in a much more hostile environment than our own. The atmosphere on Eros would be considered borderline hostile by human standards. It is a highly volcanic planet, and the frequent eruptions have raised the levels of sulfur and carbon dioxide in the surrounding air. The increased levels of carbon dioxide on Antar are sufficient to sustain all but the most sensitive of Erosians.”

“I thought you guys said we would be able to go to any of the Alpha System planets safely. It almost sounds like the atmosphere on Eros would be inhospitable to us. Humans can’t tolerate high levels of carbon dioxide, methane or sulpher…all of which would be present in large doses on a volcanic planet like Eros.” Liz said, frowning.

“I assure you, the concentration of these gases isn’t nearly as excessive as it would appear. Basically, the people of Eros are somewhat hypersensitive to changes in atmosphere whereas our bodies are more adaptable. The difference is more anatomical or evolutionary than atmospheric.” Jonas explained, eliciting understanding nods from Liz and Max and blank stares from Ava and Kyle.

“So do Antarean people live in urban centers…cities like New York…or are they spread further apart in smaller communities?” Ava asked. She blushed when she realized she was speaking as though life hadn’t changed at all since the war.

Talia nodded in understanding. “Please don’t be embarrassed ma’am. Of course these are things you need to know…we understand that you aren’t discounting the current situation on Antar. And yes, the people generally live in smaller communities. Picture early North American populations, if you will. There are some cities but none like the bustling metropolis your New York has become. Mainly, the people are gathered in smaller settlements, built in a circular fashion around central market places.”

Ava still felt awful for her imagined faux pa. “I want you to know…I take the current crisis very seriously. It’s just that, when you guys talk about the way Antar used to be, you always sound so happy…like it was this perfect utopia or something. I feel like we should learn as much as we can about that ‘golden’ period in Antar’s history because it’s what we should be aiming to achieve when we get back there. We obviously have no idea what it used to be like or what it should be like after Kivar’s gone so anything you can tell us would be a major help.”

Max nodded in agreement. “Like a roadmap of sorts. When we’re called back to Antar, we’ll be no help at all if we don’t have an ultimate goal in mind. It’s not enough that we just plan on ousting Kivar. We need to have a clear idea of what needs fixing after he’s gone…and how exactly to fix it. We’re not naïve enough to think that we’re going to be the ones who put everything back together after Kivar’s gone. The people will most likely expect us to have all the answers just because of who we are but honestly…” Max trailed off when he saw Jonas shaking his head in protest.

“Yes, the people will expect the Royal Eight to have all the answers and yes, you’ll be under a lot of pressure to right all of Kivar’s wrongs but…don’t be so quick to assume that you’re not qualified to fill that role. You know nothing of the Empire and you have no bond with its people because in this lifetime, you are human…figuratively and for some of you, literally. Despite all that, each of you made the conscious decision to go to Antar to fight for those strangers anyway…just because they need you. Kivar has sent men to Earth to kill you, yet you choose to face him directly anyway…because people you’ve never met will die if you don’t. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have all the answers yet. You will be there for the people, when they need you the most, and that’s how you will make a difference.”

Chapter 27: The Beginning of the End

By the time May rolled around, both groups had fallen into a rather comfortable routine. They always kept important conversations restricted to the dream plane. Once a week, Isabel and Alex would bring everyone together in a group dreamwalk. They would chart out their next few destinations and talk about any new developments or concerns. It was during one of those weekly dreamwalks that Liz made a startling revelation.

“The premonitions have started.” Liz announced.

“Seriously?! How do you know for sure? What happened?” Maria babbled in excitement.

Liz blushed. “I wasn’t completely sure the first time it happened. I was sitting by the campfire thinking about how good s’mores would be right then. Suddenly, I had this weird little vision of Max walking up with chocolate bars and marshmallows. Not ten minutes later, Max walked up and surprised me with s’more goodies. At the time, I thought the little ‘mini-vision’ had been a daydream or something…I figured Max sensed it and decided to surprise me.”

Max interrupted with an embarrassed laugh. “I had no idea she was thinking about s’mores. Here I thought was going to bring her this great surprise but…she already knew.”

“We just kind of wrote it off as a fluke. Then last week, I was helping Max pack up our tent when all of a sudden I was hit with a vision of Amy stumbling and spraining her ankle. It was so quick I hardly realized I was having a vision. About an hour later, Jim and Amy were on their way into camp and I heard her yelp. As it turns out…she tripped on the way into camp and sprained her ankle.” Liz stopped there, letting the story sink in.

Maria missed the point of the story for a second. “You sprained your ankle mom? Are you OK? You’ve been keeping your weight off of it…and keeping it elevated, right?” She babbled in concern.

Amy giggled. “It’s fine now honey. Max fixed it. It was actually kind of funny…I limped around for two days on a sore ankle because I wasn’t sure if it would be rude to ask Max to fix it. Max wandered around for two days feeling bad because he thought I didn’t want his help. Liz finally figured it out and dragged him over to see me and set things straight. Now I’m all better.”

“Uh…no offense Liz, but I thought your visions were going to be more…you know…Earth shattering or something. I got the impression that you were going to be seeing these huge important events, not…well…s’mores.” Alex commented gently.

“They’re random and the s’mores one was pretty trivial…I’ll give you that. I guess what I’m trying to say is…we have a chance to do some good here. Think about it. Obviously, if I see something trivial, we won’t need to do anything about it. But, if I see something serious…we might be able to prevent it.” Liz explained.

“What do you mean, ‘we have a chance to do some good’? As in…we have a chance to use your visions to play Good Samaritan, or as in…we have a chance to change bad things before they happen to us?” Kyle asked.

“Both!” Ava said with a smile. “We could do something other than running around trying to cover our own butts for once. We could help other people!”

“No way…we can’t just wander around the US playing Robin Hood. If we meddle around too much in other people’s lives, we could make everything worse. First of all, what gives us the right to butt into people’s lives and change things? Second of all, we’d probably end up exposing ourselves. Are you willing to end up in the White Room just because you helped a little old lady cross the street?” Michael barked.

“Michael!” Isabel gasped. “Are you telling me that you wouldn’t try to save someone’s life if you had the chance?”

Maria jabbed Michael in the ribs with her elbow. “What Spaceboy really meant to say was: Of course I’d like to help people but we can’t just go around changing every little trivial event. We can only help people if we know that we’re not going to be doing more harm than good…and only if it’s serious enough to warrant intervention.” Maria translated.

“Guys…we’re not God. How do we know that we aren’t changing a pivotal moment in someone’s life? Bad things happen to people every day and it sucks but that’s just how it is. These things make us who we are! Take Liz for example. She got shot! I’d say that qualifies as seriously bad…but…look at what came out of it. Granted, we’re on the run from just about every law enforcement agency from here to Antar, but we’re together. We wouldn’t have each other if that one awful thing had never happened.” Kyle pointed out.

“Kyle, I see your point but perhaps you’ve forgotten that the only reason Liz lived to see that day is because Max intervened and saved her. I agree that we shouldn’t risk our own lives to change something trivial in someone else’s, but I do think that if we can save a life…we have to at least try.” Alex, ever the voice of reason, argued. A few others nodded in agreement.

Michael sighed. “Promise me none of you are going to do something stupid that will expose the group. If you can promise me that, then I’m in.”

Isabel smirked. “Well now I’ve seen everything! Michael Guerin telling other people to think before they leap…hell hath frozen over.” Her good-natured teasing earned her a vicious glare from ‘Commander Michael’.

“I have one more suggestion to add to Michaels’…Please don’t go running off to help someone without letting the rest of us in on the situation first.” Sheriff Valenti suggested, looking sternly at Liz’s group. They would be the first to know about any new visions and it just wasn’t safe for any one of them to rush off without alerting the rest of the group.

“And for the love of God, please remember that you’re not invincible!” Amy pleaded. “I want to help people just as much as you guys do, but if you run into the middle of some dangerous situation you can’t possibly get out of…everyone loses.”

The Roswell crew didn’t spend much more time talking about Liz’s premonitions. The parents each chimed in with their concerns on the matter but before long, the conversation ended. No one knew when or if Liz would get another vision so there was really nothing else they could say. They all agreed they would try to help people if the right opportunity came along, and that was the end of it.

FBI Director Peter Adams called in his most trusted agents later that afternoon. He had listened to the audio surveillance from Liz Parker’s camp nearly a dozen times and he thought it was time to address his concerns with the rest of the team.

The recording clearly captured a conversation between a few members of Max’s group which the agents referred to as, Group A. Liz and Ava were openly discussing the implications of “her premonitions.” Liz’s description of her so-called premonitions was nothing to write home about but the idea that these kids could possibly foresee the future was extraordinary. As soon as the agents arrived, Adams played the audio feeds for them.

“I know you each receive transcripts of these audio files, but I thought this one was important enough to review the original recording instead. So…what does this tell us?” Adams asked the group.

Agent Garrett was in awe. Angela was a scientist to the core and already her mind was whirling trying to decipher why Liz would display such powers when the others hadn’t. Liz was, after all, completely human.

“I’m stunned. I really am. We probably should’ve anticipated something like this but…wow. Can the imposters do that? Do we have any evidence of that kind of power from them?” Garrett asked.

Harrison jumped right in. “We’ve seen no indication of that from the others yet. They’re capable of murder…we know that much. The silver handprint murders have started all over again near their hideout in Utah. They are without a doubt, hostile. We have no evidence of premonitions on their end though.”

“The more we observe, the more it seems obvious that the Roswell bunch is superior. They appear to be more intelligent, more empathetic and they seem to hold themselves to a much higher moral standard. The imposters though…I would question whether they had any humanity in them at all.” Agent Meyers mused.

“What do we know of Roswell Group B? With Kyle in Group A, we can’t have very much info on the others, right?” Agent Garrett asked.

“We have very little intel from that group. What little we do know comes second-hand from the parents that have been switching back and forth between the two. According to comments made by Ms. Parker, we know that they are able to somehow join together in their dreams…a place where we can’t reach them. We’re only getting half the picture here and sadly, that half is telling us squat.” Agent Ford, the counterintelligence specialist, commented.

“What are your observations on all this Serena?” Adams asked. Serena was the best profiler the FBI ever had so her observations were highly relevant here.

“Well… These ‘premonitions’ present two, very different, opportunities for the Roswell crew. Number one, they could try to use them strictly for personal gain. Number two; they could use them to help other people. According to the audio files, Liz and Ava never even considered using the ‘premonitions’ for personal gain…like it never occurred to them that it would be an option. This tells us a lot about their character. This new development just reinforces what we’ve suspected for a long time. They are innocent victims in all this.” Serena insisted.

“I am inclined to agree with that assessment.” Adams said, much to the surprise of the other agents.

“Have they tapped into their bank accounts yet? They’ve got to be getting low on money by now.” Agent Meyers asked curiously.

“They haven’t tried yet. They have to know that their sudden disappearance raised red flags all over the place. I highly doubt they’ll even risk trying to access their accounts again. They’re too smart for that.” Adams pointed out.

“So what happens when they run out of money? We can’t keep the others away from them for very long if they stop moving.” Serena asked in concern.

“Since we’ve already taken the liberty of confiscating their assets, I think we could easily arrange for a few subtle, chance discoveries, that will help their cause. Perhaps we could arrange for them to ‘find’ a bit of cash near their campsite…or they could ‘win’ a cash prize in some conveniently planted sweepstakes at a nearby store. Work it out. Make it subtle.” Adams offered.

“Michael will be suspicious.” Serena cautioned.

“According to your assessment, he’s always a bit suspicious. Feels like he has to protect the others and all that. This will be no different.” Adams countered.

The FBI had spent the last two months sifting through audio surveillance looking for even the tiniest hints about the ‘Royal Eight’. It was nearly impossible to get any visual information on the groups because they were choosing to stay in such remote areas that undercover agents would definitely be spotted. They were forced to rely almost entirely on the data coming from the surveillance device planted on Kyle and vague satellite data.

During that time, the FBI made many exciting new discoveries about the kids and more importantly, they learned a lot about their character. Because the two groups were traveling separately, their pursuers couldn’t find them, so for weeks the FBI had nothing to listen to except the sounds of ‘normal’ family life. That all changed when the groups started their unofficial ‘school’ sessions with their guardians.

The transcripts of those sessions were poured over time and time again by the agents. There was a stunning amount of information revealed during those meetings. Unfortunately, none of those transcripts revealed why the aliens were here on Earth, but it did tell them that the kids were preparing to leave in the foreseeable future to fight a war of sorts against this mysterious Kivar fellow. That information alone was very revealing about the ‘Roswell Eight’ because apparently, these kids were planning on whooshing off to another planet to defend a bunch of people they didn’t even know from someone they sarcastically termed ‘the evil dictator’. Over the last two months, the agents had come to trust Serena’s assessments of the Roswell crew despite the fact that all the answers they learned just served to raise more questions.

The President’s order of protection was still being enforced. Given comments from the guardian named Jonas, the FBI suspected this mysterious Kivar fellow had been responsible for the murder of nearly 4 billion people. The others, the ones called ‘skins’, were still out there and the kids seemed to think they were working for Kivar. That clearly implied that these skins were extremely dangerous. Based on the fact that the soldiers repeatedly commented on how important the ‘royal eight’ were to the people of their home world, it was clear that these skins couldn’t be allowed to hurt the Roswell kids. Desperate people can and will take desperate measures.

The skins were still trying to follow the kids’ trail, but they were failing miserably…thanks, in part, to the subtle efforts of the FBI. After many flat tires and inconvenient detours, the skins still hadn’t caught on to the fact that the kids had unseen protectors out there. That was exactly the way the agents wanted it. The imposters’ recent actions had proven that they were highly dangerous…to aliens and humans alike.

Director Adams ended the meeting an hour later with instructions for the agents to continue watching the Royals from a distance. He wanted more answers just as badly as the others in the room but direct contact with the Roswell fugitives just didn’t seem prudent at this point. They could learn much more by following the audio surveillance than they could by risking a confrontation. It seemed simpler to let the Roswell crew enjoy their peace for a bit longer than to risk scaring them away by approaching them.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, Rath was pacing furiously in his tiny motel room. It had been over two months since he’d sent the skins out to retrieve the Roswell crew. Two months of complete failure had put Rath on the warpath.

“Patch into those damned skins’ heads and find out what the hell is taking them so long!” He barked to Tess.

“It doesn’t work that way Rath.” Tess muttered miserably. Spending months alone with Lonnie and Rath was testing her patience to the breaking point.

Rath flicked his hand and watched indifferently as Tess started gasping for air. It was as if an unseen force was choking the life out of her. Just as she started turning a sickly shade of purple, Lonnie whacked his hand away in irritation.

“You can’t kill her idiot. Unless you learned to mindwarp at that fancy training camp of yours, we need her.” Lonnie mocked.

“First of all, her parlor tricks won’t do us any good against the Mayberry club anymore so no, we don’t need her. Second of all, you’re not in charge here Lonnie so just back off.” Rath grunted. He had no intention of clarifying what powers he did and did not have after his training on Antar so he didn’t comment any further. There was no point in revealing all the cards in his hand just yet.

Tess pulled herself up from the floor and rubbed her throbbing neck. “The skins don’t listen to me, remember? I can get in their heads no problem, but if they won’t answer to me then it won’t do any good.”

“I still don’t see why we don’t just get rid of those useless skins and take out the Mayberry gang on our own.” Lonnie snapped. “With everything we’ve learned, there’s got to be a faster way to do this.”

Rath shot her a violent glare but suddenly froze in place. A frightening grin slowly appeared on his face. “That’s a good idea…a very good idea…” He growled.

Rath began pacing again as he explained his idea. “If they can join their powers, there’s no reason why we can’t do the same thing. We don’t have four, but between the three of us…I bet we have enough juice to find them on the dream plane even if they’re trying to block us out. If we can’t approach them directly, we’ll find em’ somewhere they can’t fight back.”

“People remember being dreamwalked though. We can’t just waltz right into their dreams, ask them where they are and then expect them not to know we’re coming.” Tess pointed out.

Rath smiled. “Of course not! We’ll join our powers, Lonnie will get us in, we’ll fish around in their memories until we find something useful and then you’ll mindwarp them to forget the entire thing. When they’re sleeping, their defenses will be down and we’ll be able to get in and get out no problem.”

“That could work! We can use their dreams to figure out where they are! Then…poof. We’re there and they have nowhere to run.” Lonnie said with excitement.

“What…you mean just teleport right into the middle of their camp?” Tess stammered, surprised that none of them had thought of this before.

“Exactly. The skins say they must have split up because the seals are harder to track now. If that’s the truth, then they must have split up the foursquares too. The skins would’ve found them by now if they had kept the foursquares intact. No ‘power of eight’…no foursquare…no resistance.” Rath said with a grin.

“So who do we try first? Lonnie could find Isabel easily…” Tess said, already envisioning the whole plan in her mind.

“No way…it can’t be her. Dreamwalking is her thing too. She would sense me in there and block me out right away. That’s why we didn’t try this before. No…it’ll have to be the weakest one…someone who can’t block me out. It’ll be nearly impossible to sniff out someone I’m not connected to but with our powers combined…we’ll be all good. Who’s their weakest?” Lonnie asked Rath.

“How the hell do I know?!” Rath started protesting, but then stopped when the answer struck him. He looked to Tess.

“Can you get Lonnie in that Kyle guy’s head?” Rath asked quickly.

Tess didn’t even hesitate. “Absolutely. He’s easy.”

“Good! Then we start tonight. It shouldn’t take long at all to find them now…” Rath leered.

Luna_Seer - Thanks! Liz's premonitions are finally going start playing a bigger part in the story. They start small but they won't always stay that way...

RhondaAnn - Poor Kyle's been the patsy for a while now. Wouldn't it be fun if he wasn't nearly as weak as the others thought?

ultimatepickupline - Good call on the '*****' suggestion and I have added them in to the next few parts. Thanks!

Timelord31 - Yup, the FBI is listening to every word. They hear everything Kyle hears now that they have him bugged. The things they hear are completely out of context of course, so they're learning a lot while still being totally confused. At least they're getting more valuable information than they found in Pierce's files now though. :D

Jennifer24 - Thanks! I'm glad you guys all seemed to like the history lesson bit. It didn't seem very realistic that these guys would be expected to rescue an entire star system without knowing anything about it. And yes, Rath finally got a clue and came up with a less incompetant plan...which is bad news for our podsters...

ayznshorti - Thanks! Now that the FBI has a vague clue about what is really going on, things are going to get mighty interesting. They can only stay on the fringes, watching the whole thing play out for so long...

Chapter 28: Nowhere to Hide

The groups were gearing up to head out for their most exciting destination yet…Disney World. Nowhere else in the US could they find as many other tourists than at Disney. It would be a piece of cake to blend in there.

This was going to be their most expensive stop yet, but they all agreed that it was worth it. Money had been getting low but then last week, Alex had the good fortune of being the 1000th customer at a local Thrifty Mart…winning him a $1000 cash prize. That money, coupled with the $500 cash Maria found in the woods and the $100 a grateful woman insisted Kyle take for changing her flat tire, gave them enough extra for a short Disney adventure.

At Michael’s camp, Maria was bouncing around excitedly. The others were trying to pack up their camping gear but Maria’s continuous singsong chorus of, “M-I-C…K-E-Y…M-O-U-S-Eeeee,” kept echoing through the campground. Amy finally stopped working and turned to Maria.

“You’re not excited, are you Maria? Because it’s hard to tell…what, with the way you’ve been so quiet all after noon and all…” Amy chided.

“Mom! We’re going to Disney World! Is it too much to ask that the rest of you get a little excited for once? Share the joy, would you?” Maria lectured.

Jim laughed. “It’s very exciting, Maria…really. Perhaps it would be a good idea if we kept our happiness to a dull roar though. The idea is to not tip off our enemies by telling them exactly where we’re going…”

Maria fixed Jim and Amy with her best pout. “You guys are real party poopers, you know that?”

Alex laughed. “I’ll be excited with you Maria. Come on…sing with me…M-I-C…”

Isabel rolled her eyes and continued packing up her tent. Secretly, she was really excited to be going somewhere a little less…outdoorsy. It would be like a very welcome slice of civilization for once. Even if it was somewhere crowded with screaming children and overzealous life-sized cartoon characters. She too began quietly humming the Mickey Mouse club theme.

“You’re all crazy. Seriously.” Michael muttered.

*****************************************************

Over in Max’s camp, a similar scene was unfolding. Liz was scurrying about with a long list of supplies trailing behind her. “Don’t forget…we need to buy some sun block on the way!” She called out to Max.

Max just chuckled and kept folding up his tent. Kyle came trudging up, sporting bags the size of Texas under each eye.

“Hey Kyle! Are you feeling all right?” Max asked in surprise.

Kyle waved a hand in distraction. “Yeah…fine. Bad dreams last night.” He mumbled, wandering away in a daze.

Max looked to Ava in concern. “Anything we should be worried about?” He asked.

“I don’t think so. He was thrashing around in his sleep last night and then this morning he said he had a nightmare. He couldn’t even remember what it was by then though so…” Ava shrugged helplessly. “I think he just needs a good nap.”

Liz rushed by, her list growing longer by the minute. “He’ll have plenty of time to sleep on the way to Florida. Max, don’t forget…we need to pick up some disposable cameras too.” She babbled on, scribbling yet another three or four things on her ‘to-do’ list. Peering over, Ava laughed when she saw Liz add ‘Nap for Kyle’ to her list.

By the time both groups were ready to head out, Liz had been forbidden from adding anything else to her list and Maria had been silenced by Michael’s threats to drive them straight to Alaska if she didn’t stop singing. The whole motley bunch of them finally left for Florida, bustling with excitement.

****************************************************

Out in Utah, the evil trio was bustling with excitement of a different kind. They had successfully invaded Kyle’s dreams the night before. His dreams gave them a lot to talk about.

“That was just so…ugh…he’s human! What the hell is wrong with her?!” Tess ranted, thinking about the images of her double in Kyle’s mind.

“Oh forget about that! You’re just jealous anyway.” Lonnie taunted. “You couldn’t get a piece of that boy’s tight body if you paid for it…”

“Oh please! I could’ve had him at any time if I wanted to.” Tess started. Rath immediately cut her off.

“Who the hell cares?! You guys are completely missing the point! Didn’t you see what I did?” Off their blank looks, Rath’s irritation grew.

“No way does a straight guy dream about friggin Mickey Mouse…unless he’s got Disney on the brain for some reason…” Rath explained, waiting for the other two to catch on.

“Disney? They’re going to freakin Disneyland?! Oh that’s classic…” Lonnie snorted.

Tess looked doubtful. “We don’t know that. He could’ve fallen asleep last night watching cartoons in a hotel room somewhere.”

“No way…I don’t buy it. You said that guy was a jock. And, his dad’s a cop. Guys like that don’t sit around watching old Mickey Mouse cartoons.” Rath said.

Lonnie shrugged indifferently. “Doesn’t really matter anyway. We didn’t find out enough to pinpoint their exact location yet. We’re going to have to go back into his head again tonight for more details. If he’s dreaming about overgrown cartoon characters again, we’ll know for sure.”

“So hypothetically, if they are at some lame Disney park, it can’t be the one in California. They can’t be that close or we’d feel them.” Tess pointed out.

“Exactly. Now you’re getting it. They’re either in Florida, or they’re heading there soon.” Rath insisted.

“If we assume that stupid mouse in Kyle’s dream is supposed to stand for Disney World, then how do we know that it isn’t from a trip they already finished? Maybe they’ve been there and gone already.” Tess asked.

“Enough with the questions Tess! We’ll just keep dreamwalking him until we’re sure.” Rath said. “The second we’re sure, we drop in for a visit. They’ll never see us coming.”

**************************************************

The drive to Florida took almost twelve hours but that wasn’t nearly long enough to dampen the Roswell crew’s enthusiasm. Shortly after they arrived, they found a decent little Motel where they could splurge a bit and stay in real beds for once. Camping would have been a better decision financially, but since it was now summer, camping in Florida just sounded hot, sticky and miserable. Hence, the tiny, air conditioned motel rooms.

On the north end of the motel complex, Michael’s crew was getting settled in their rooms. The parents insisted that they have men in one room, women in the other. The men’s room was beyond crowded. Since the rooms came with two double beds and there were four men, none of whom wanted to share a bed, they had to set up two cots at the far side of the tiny room to compensate. Alex quickly unpacked the few belongings he had left and then wandered over to the girl’s room to see what theirs looked like.

Isabel smiled when she sensed Alex out in the hallway. She popped the door open and let him in the room before he even had a chance to knock.

Alex grinned. “Nice room. It looks just like ours…although I imagine there will be a lot less snoring in your room than there will be in mine.”

“It’s quaint, isn’t it? I can’t believe how excited I am to be staying in a tiny, one star motel.” Isabel said with a laugh.

“Do you realize that we’re going to have hot running water…in our room? Showers, beds, air conditioning…this is going to be great!” Maria gushed. It had been so long since any of them had these basic things that now they sounded like pure luxury.

“Hey Maria…I saw a karaoke bar just down the road. We should check that place out before we leave.” Alex said, joining in on the ‘vacation’ excitement.

****************************************************

On the south end of the motel complex, the room arrangements were very similar. Again, all of the men were crammed into one room with two beds and two tiny cots. The gals had no qualms about sharing beds if it meant having real pillows and cushy comforters for once so their room was much less crowded. After Max finished setting up his cot, he wandered across the hall to see Liz.

“Wow…your room looks so much bigger than ours does without the extra cots in here.” Max commented, checking out Liz’s room in awe.

“So did Kyle even make it to the bed before he fell back to sleep again?” Liz asked with a grin.

“Oh yeah. He stayed awake long enough to call dibs on one of the double beds…leaving the Sheriff and I stuck with the tiny cots in the corner.” Max said, rolling his eyes.

Liz giggled as she finished organizing her ‘vacation gear’. Her cute little black backpack-purse was filled to the brim with enough sunscreen, disposable cameras, tour maps and snack packs for the whole group.

“Go wake Kyle up and meet us out front. We’re going to that cute little cartoon themed restaurant down the street for dinner.” Liz announced suddenly.

“Liz honey…you’ve got to slow down a little bit. I promise you, our little side trip will not crumble into ruin if we don’t stick to a strict schedule.” Nancy said with an amused smile.

Max tried to hide a relieved sigh. “Why don’t we give Kyle another hour or so to sleep before we drag him out to play? Ava said he didn’t sleep well last night and he was looking pretty ragged when we got here…”

Liz frowned. “I suppose we could just postpone our tour of Sea World until tomorrow. Oh wait…tomorrow is Epcot Center and we can’t miss that. Maybe if we go to Sea World on Tuesday and then move Universal Studios to…”

Ava, Dianne and Nancy shared amused glances as Liz started rifling through her bag for her notebook, still mumbling under her breath about their itinerary. Max quietly bowed out of the room, intending on taking a little nap of his own before dinner. The long drive had left him feeling far less enthusiastic than Liz apparently was at the moment. A bit of air conditioned rest and relaxation was in order, Max decided.

****************************************************

Later that afternoon, Max’s crew ate at one restaurant and Michael’s picked a similar one just down the street. Even in a crowded place like Orlando, Florida, the groups couldn’t risk being together too much. They had to keep in mind that their seals could give away their position in a heartbeat if they weren’t careful.

The soldiers were split between the two groups. They were having quite an interesting experience in Florida so far. They were both confused and amused by all the tourists lumbering by, loaded down with souvenir bags, wearing fake mouse ears on their heads. It must have been quite a ridiculous sight to a bunch of war-hardened soldiers sent to Earth to protect the prophesied saviors of their star system. Thankfully though, despite the strangeness of the situation, the soldiers seemed to blend in as well as usual. They had perfected the art of ‘hiding in plain sight’ just as well Royals had.

After dinner, both groups headed back to the motel to get some shuteye. They were all still a bit worn out after the long drive. Tonight they would have to rest up because tomorrow would be filled with nothing but sightseeing and fun.

While everyone else managed to enjoy sleeping in real beds for once, Kyle was once again plagued by bad dreams. After waking up from a particularly disturbing dream at 4am, he wasn’t able to get back to sleep. Max woke up to the sounds of Kyle angrily flipping through a magazine at sunrise.

“What are you doing up already?” Max whispered.

Kyle flipped over in irritation. “Another bad dream. I can’t go back to sleep now so I’m stuck laying here for who knows how long, waiting for everyone else to wake up.” He mumbled.

“Not to sound like a bad cliché but, do you want to talk about it?” Max asked worried. “This is the second night in a row…”

Kyle stifled a bitter laugh. “Nah. Thanks though. They’re just bad dreams. Maybe I’m not eating enough fiber or something.”

“Fiber…yeah. Sure. Well, OK then.” Max said with a laugh.

Since Kyle obviously wasn’t concerned about the dreams, Max decided there was no reason for him to be either. He flipped back over and quickly fell back to sleep. The other men in the room slept on as though nothing had happened.

The next morning, the two groups split up further and set out to visit different parks. Max’s group headed for Epcot Center while Michael’s group went to the Magic Kingdom. During the drive out to the Epcot, Ava couldn’t help but notice that Kyle wasn’t his usual mellow self. He was unusually cranky and withdrawn.

“Had another bad dream last night…that’s all. I’m just tired.” Kyle reassured her, as though reading her mind.

Max’s group had a blast at Epcot Center. The sections exploring different regions of the world were of particular interest to Max and Ava. Liz absolutely adored all of the science displays. Kyle just trudged along, his exhaustion showing, yet enjoying the experience all the same.

When Michael’s group arrived at the Magic Kingdom, a bubbly young woman informed them that the numbers on their admission tickets matched the winning numbers in the daily prize drawing. They were each given packets filled to the brim with coupons and free passes to Sea World and Epcot Center. Maria could barely contain her excitement.

“What are the odds that we would have such good luck all at once?” She gushed. “First I find that money by the campground, then Alex wins $1000 at the Thrifty Mart and best of all, we win Disney prize packets. How cool is that?! We won’t have to spend a dime here now!”

Michael didn’t share in her enthusiasm. “Isn’t that a little too weird though?”

Maria fixed him with a serious pout. “Don’t be a party pooper Michael. We’re going to have fun here. You’ll see!”

Powerless against the Deluca pout, Michael sighed and joined in on the festivities. He quietly pondered their recent string of ‘good luck’ to himself all afternoon though. As they say…if something seems to be too good to be true…it usually is.

****************************************************

All FBI agents stationed in and around Orlando, Florida, received urgent messages from Director Adams that very afternoon. He needed to alert them to the fact that the ‘skins’ had suddenly ceased pursuit of the Roswell crew nearly 48 hours ago. It was a major cause for concern because not only had the skins stopped, but also it appeared that they were actually retreating back to Utah.

There was no good reason for this move. It didn’t make any sense. Adams ordered each of his agents to move in closer to the Roswell crew in case there was trouble brewing. There was no way he was going to risk losing the ‘Royal Eight’ now. Aside from the threat of interplanetary war, Adams just couldn’t ignore the fact that these kids were innocent people.

The only reassuring part of this new development was the fact that the Roswell crew had picked the first convenient hideout in months. In the crowded Disney parks, it would be much easier for his agents to get close to the groups without being discovered. He could plant agents in every park if necessary and they would just blend in with all the other tourists.

To complicate matters a bit though, Adams suspected they might be forced to reveal their presence to the aliens much sooner than planned. In addition to the strange new movements of the imposters, Kyle Valenti talks in his sleep and the things he had to say were cause for major concern. The audio footage they’d been picking up from him lately indicated that he might somehow be sensing a threat from the imposters without even realizing it. He kept murmuring something along the lines of, “they’re coming for us…” Judging by the sudden retreat of the skins, Adams was almost convinced that Kyle’s bad dreams were more than just that. Perhaps he had the power of premonition like Liz did. There was really no way of knowing, but it was clear that something big was about to go down.

****************************************************

Later that evening, out in Utah, the evil trio was gearing up for another dream invasion. They planned on fishing through Kyle’s dreams for any detail they could find that would confirm the Roswell crew’s location. Tess had successfully warped Kyle through the dream plane to erase any memories he might have of the dreams they witnessed. On the off chance he somehow could sense their presence, if he couldn’t remember the dream, then he couldn’t blow their cover.

“You don’t think he can sense us, can he?” Tess asked for the first time.

“That Kyle guy? Hello! He hasn’t tried to block us out yet, has he?” Lonnie answered with a roll of her eyes.

“Well no…but…” Tess stammered.

“But nothing, Tess. The poor schmuck doesn’t have a clue and we like it that way. Let’s get this show on the road. I want a positive ID on their location before the skins get back here. It’ll be that much easier to punish their failure if we can prove we found the others without their help.” Rath said with a sneer.

The three settled in on Lonnie’s bed, crammed together side-by-side. The closeness was an unfortunate necessity because they had to be touching to join their powers. They didn’t have a strong enough mental connection to each other to make it work any other way.

Within seconds Lonnie found Kyle on the dream plane and wasted no time entering his dream. Kyle was sitting at a tiny table at some cartoon themed restaurant with his dad. The men were laughing and having a good time. Suddenly Kyle’s face fell and a dark shadow crossed over his features. He looked around nervously as though he sensed someone watching.

Kyle’s mind jumped to a scene where he and Ava appeared to be entering some kind of park, hand-in-hand. There was a giant dome at the entrance of the park and the sign at the top of the dome read “Epcot Center.” He gave Ava a sad smile and then the dream jumped again.

The progression of the dream was disorganized and unnatural. It was as if he was trying to control his dream for some reason. Most humans don’t even realize that’s possible so it really threw the evil trio for a loop when Kyle did it.

“What the hell…” Rath muttered, confident that Kyle wasn’t aware of their presence and wouldn’t hear him.

“Let’s just watch this play out. It could be some kind of manifestation of his powers. Ava’s mind used to jump like that sometimes when I would dreamwalk her too. He probably doesn’t even know he’s doing it.” Lonnie said.

Kyle’s dream abruptly changed again. Now he was sitting in a motel room with Max. The trio saw a sign for Disney World out the motel window. Kyle’s dream self turned to Max with a look of anguish and said, “I was wrong. The dreams are bad. We need to leave here.”

Without warning, the trio was unceremoniously booted from Kyle’s dream. They were stunned to realize that Kyle had managed to block them out of his mind. Rath was absolutely livid.

“Get your stuff together. We’re going to Florida.” He barked.

“We have to go now! Kyle will tell everyone!” Tess said frantically.

“No he won’t. He might have figured out what was going on in the end but it was still a dream and he’s still human. Humans remember maybe ten percent of their dreams at best and with your mindwarps, he won’t remember enough to be of any use anyway. We’re not going in there without a plan so chill your jets.” Lonnie snapped.

Rath snorted. “For once, we agree. We can’t just magically appear in the middle of Disney World without exposing ourselves. We need to find out where they’re staying. That’s where we want to show up. In the part of the dream where Kyle was in that room with Maxie boy, there was a notepad on the dresser that said something about Magic Motel or something. We can use that. Call every motel in Orlando if you have to…just find out where this Magic Motel place is and find out if our friends are still there.”

***************************************************

As Courtney listened in to the latest conversation with the dupes from her tiny motel room in Florida, she huffed in frustration. The dupes were closing in fast on the Royal Eight and it left her in a really tough spot. The Eight had barely begun to tap into their powers and sadly; the dupes had worked with Kivar already to hone theirs. Even though the Eight should be stronger because they had the power of two foursquares behind them, on an individual basis, the dupes would be just as strong. They were preying upon that poor human, Kyle Valenti, and she didn’t know how long his mind would hold out against all three of his adversaries.

The day Courtney planted that bug in Tess’ purse, she knew she was getting herself in too deep. She had used her ‘day off’ from the Crashdown to go spy on the Royals at Las Cruces. Her initial intent was to plant the bug on them. She needed to find out everything she could about them while she still had the time. When she saw the dupes creeping around campus, she’d bugged Tess instead on a whim. The idiot girl had been too wrapped up in her own mindwarp to even notice her presence. The Royals she could observe in person through her ties to Mr. Parker. The dupes though…they were wild cards. Any intel she could get on them would be helpful to the cause.

Faced with the possibility that the dupes were coming to Florida to take out the Royals, Courtney didn’t know what to do. In all honesty, they were both thorns in her side. Neither one was useful to the cause. Now, she would be forced to choose between looking the other way and helping the very people who had started this mess in the first place. Right at the moment, neither option sounded all that pleasant.

Timelord31 - Ask and ye shall receive...The FBI are going to have no choice but to step up and make a move soon.

RhondaAnn - You're exactly right. Action is most definitely on the horizon and Courtney is definitely playing for herself. The question is...is that a bad thing?

Jennifer24 - Thanks! I thought it was time for the gang to have a little fun. Sadly, it won't turn out the way they planned though. And I plead the fifth on the status of Kyle's memory for the time being...

tequathisy and Asabetha - Thanks! I hope you like this chapter as much as the last. :D

Arianneleigh - Things certainly are speeding up now. And it's not going to slow down any time soon...

ultimatepickupline - Glad to hear you didn't mind I quoted you. The gang's reaction to the presence of the FBI is going to be quite interesting. It would take something awefully extreme to bring the feds out of hiding, don't you think?

sylus27 - Thanks! The FBI snoops are going to be revealed VERY soon, in a very overwhelming way...

Chapter 29: All Good Things Must Come to an End

Both Roswell groups woke up quite early the next morning. It was hard not to be excited about the big day they had ahead. After yesterday’s fun, being in Florida was starting to feel much more like a big family vacation than just another pit stop on their way around the US.

Kyle was wide-awake and jittery by the time his roommates woke up. He had been up for hours already, gulping coffee from the tiny coffee pot in the corner of their room. Last night’s nightmare had left him shaken but for the life of him, Kyle couldn’t remember enough of the dream to know why.

“Son? I’m getting a little bit worried about you. You haven’t had nightmares like this since…well, since…” Jim struggled to say what was on his mind.

Kyle looked at his father sadly. “Since mom left us…yeah, I know. I have no idea what’s going on dad. When I woke up this morning I was terrified, but now I have no idea why.”

“When your mom left…you were crushed. I know you were. You never wanted anyone to see you hurting though, so you locked it all up inside. That’s when the nightmares started. It was like your body’s way of working through it all I guess.” Jim pointed out.

“I know what you’re getting at dad, but this is different. When I wake up…I feel just awful. Like I just had tea with Kivar or something. I feel guilty, I feel rage…I’m scared. What gets me is, I can’t remember enough of the dreams to know why.” Kyle kicked at a balled up sock in frustration.

“You don’t think this is like what Michael had back in Yellowstone, do you? He sensed danger coming but he couldn’t really figure out where it was coming from. With Ava being his sister, and her powers being what they are…do you think we should tell the others?” Jim prodded.

“Well…no. That can’t be it. I’m not this special commander guy like Michael. He’s practically hardwired to sense danger and stuff. Hell, I can barely manage to roll a pencil across the table with my mind. I’m a regular pro at changing the color of my cloths, but other than that…” Kyle shrugged helplessly.

Jim sighed. “You’re so much stronger than you know, Kyle. Even before your friends came along, you were a strong person. These dreams are there for a reason. They have meaning. Whether they mean you’re stressed out, developing a new power, or not eating right…it doesn’t matter. Figure out where they’re coming from and then do something about it.”

“Is that the same motivational speech you gave Michael back at the Grand Canyon?” Kyle asked with a smirk.

Jim smiled mischievously. “Nah…I save all the really good stuff for you.”

Soon, the rest of the guys were awake and ready for another day on the town. After meeting up with the ladies, Max's group headed out for a hardy breakfast right in the heart of the Magic Kingdom. Poor Kyle was so exhausted; he fell asleep at the breakfast table.

“Maybe you should take a peek into these nightmares he’s been having. I’m getting a little bit worried about him.” Liz whispered to Ava as Jim nudged Kyle awake.

Ava shook her head adamantly. “I won’t go rifling through his head like Tess did. He said he thinks maybe the dreams are just from being stressed out for so long. I have to respect his privacy. I won’t be like Tess.”

Liz gave Ava an understanding smile. She could totally sympathize with the pain of living in Tess’ shadow. If Ava wanted to distance herself from all things Tess, then it was completely understandable. And since Kyle was convinced that these dreams were nothing the group needed to be concerned about then maybe it was best to just let him work it out by himself.

“So who’s ready to go see the sights?” Liz asked, subtly changing the subject.

Max’s crew quickly paid for their breakfast and headed out to the Magic Kingdom. They had a blast from the moment they arrived. Ava got to ride on her very first roller coaster and even the exhausted Kyle had to admit it her excitement was contagious.

“Wow! That was so much fun!” Ava panted, climbing down from the coaster platform. “It’s times like these that make me wish I had met up with you guys earlier. I missed out on so much in New York!”

Max grinned. “Yeah, because we were the epitome of fun and excitement in high school…what, with all the invigorating classes and all…”

Liz swatted Max’s arm playfully. “Don’t listen to him. He won’t admit it, but he actually enjoyed high school.”

Ava laughed. “Of course he did, Liz. You were there. He could’ve been on his deathbed but he still would’ve tossed on a respectable sweater and loafers and showed up at school just so he could make a good impression on you. I might not have been here for most of that, but I’ve heard the stories. The soulful gazes…puppy dog eyes. Yeah, I’m sure Max loved school.”

Max blushed. “I’m pretty sure you don’t get to make fun of my so-called ‘puppy dog eyes’ Ava, because I’ve seen you and Kyle together. He looks at you like a man who’s been lost in the desert for a week and just found water. Trust me…as hard as you try, you guys can’t hide the fact that you’re hopeless romantics just like we are.”

Kyle wrapped his arms around Ava and smiled. “I’ll have you know, I did get lost in the desert once. I was on a hiking trip in middle school and got separated from the group. I was nearly foaming at the mouth by the time I found my way back to the road. When the rest of the group found me, I was sunburned and practically incoherent. If that’s what I look like when I see Ava, then I’m obviously doing something wrong. It’s a wonder she still loves me…”

Their playful banter suddenly ended when Liz sucked in a loud gasp of air and stopped walking. Her body went completely rigid and her eyes rolled back into her head. Max took her face in his hands and quietly started calling her name.

“Liz…honey, you have to look at me. Liz…Liz!” He pleaded.

Kyle and Ava quickly motioned for the parents. As the Parkers rushed over, bystanders began to stop and stare. Liz started shaking violently as though she was having a seizure of some kind. Jim and Amy looked around in horror as a crowd started to form around them. Liz’s breathing suddenly changed to loud, hitching gasps.

“Somebody call 911! That girl is having a seizure!” A bystander yelled.

Michael’s crew had plans to spend the entire day at Universal Studios. They were able to use their free passes for admission. Much to Isabel’s dismay, Michael and Alex were intent on riding each and every thrill ride on the property. The ladies made it through one ride before deciding to let the men test out the rest of the rides alone. They made the men pay their dues later when it came time for souvenir shopping though.

Alex paled when Isabel emerged from yet another store with more shopping bags. “Iz honey…don’t you think maybe we should call it a day? We have a few more days in Florida…plenty of time for souvenir shopping later.”

Isabel gave him a catlike grin. “But Alex dear, I thought you were having fun! You guys spent nearly four hours on those awful rides while we were forced to fend for ourselves alone. I thought you would enjoy spending a little time with me.”

Alex knew darned well that he had better just smile and nod because there was no safe response to a comment like that. So, Alex smiled and nodded while reaching out a shaky hand for yet another shopping bag. Isabel grinned innocently as she stacked her sixth bag on his arm.

Maria bounced up wearing a brand new Universal Studios tank top. “Are we ready to go now? I think I’m feeling all shopped out.”

Michael sighed in relief. “Gee, and it only took you two hours to decide to call it quits. That must be some kind of record. You only went to…” He rifled through the heavy shopping bags for a minute. “Eleven shops. Are you sure you don’t want to go for an even twelve?” He asked sarcastically.

“Would you like that? Because there was this really cute little hut near the entrance selling…” Maria grinned proudly when Michael looked toward the entrance in panic.

“Ah, nevermind. Let’s just go back to the motel now. I think we’ve had enough fun for today.” She said with a satisfied smirk.

**********************************************

On the way back to the motel, Michael’s crew chattered on excitedly about all manner of roller coasters and souvenir shops. They made elaborate plans to swap rooms so they could meet with the others and find out about their day of Disney fun. Unfortunately, their plans were about to be abruptly squashed.

A very worried Jim Valenti greeted Michael in the motel parking lot when they returned. He looked like he had been waiting a long time for the others to get back.

“We’ve got a situation here Michael.” Jim began cautiously.

“Situation? What kind of situation?” Isabel demanded in fear.

“Well first off, Liz had another vision. This one hit her hard…right in the middle of the Magic Kingdom. She went stiff and wasn’t responding to our voices. People noticed…complete strangers started crowding around us calling for an ambulance. They thought she was having a seizure or something.” Jim paused to suck in a quick breath. Maria and Alex immediately took off running for Liz’s room.

Jim shook his head and continued. “We told everyone that she was diabetic and needed her insulin. Then Max picked her up and we hightailed it back to the motel. Liz came to on the ride back here and she’s been nearly inconsolable ever since. She’s…well…she’s got some bad news.”

Isabel backed away wide eyed and headed straight for Liz’s room. Michael was at a loss for what to do when all of a sudden it occurred to him that everyone was probably crowded together in Liz’s room…boosting the signal from the seals. Michael took off running, hoping to intercept Isabel and Maria before they got to the room.

As Michael raced around the corner, he could hear his friends’ voices carrying down the hall from Liz’s room. He threw open the door and pointed to Kyle, Ava, Isabel and Alex.

“You guys have to leave.” He blurted out.

They stared at him stunned. “Excuse me?!” Alex barked.

“We’ve got both foursquares packed into one tiny motel room. We might as well put a neon sign on the building…'Royal Eight here. Assassins welcome.' We’re just begging to be found this way!” Michael tried to explain.

“If you’re so concerned about it, then you leave!” Isabel argued. “I need to know what Liz saw.”

Max looked up from his spot beside Liz’s bed. It was obvious that her hitching sobs were breaking his heart. He slowly stood up and looked around at his friends.

“Liz had a vision and it’s bad. She wanted to wait until we were all together to talk about it.” Max said quietly.

Liz leaned back against the pillows and tried to collect her thoughts. Now that everyone was ready to hear about the vision, she had no idea how to explain what she’d seen. The whole thing had been so chaotic and violent; it was hard to know where to begin.

“Babe…you know you can tell us anything. Why don’t you start at the beginning and we’ll figure it out together.” Maria said gently.

Liz started sobbing again. The TV erupted into a shower of sparks. Ava absent-mindedly waved a hand and the fizzling TV returned to normal. Alex looked at Liz curiously. Exploding TVs were more Michael’s style than hers.

“I don’t know how to tell you guys what I saw today…it can’t be true. It can’t happen!” Liz babbled through her sobs.

Michael closed his eyes. “Which one of us is it and where does it happen?” He asked sadly. The others gasped in surprise.

“It’s…it’s…I can’t be sure.” Liz stammered, running the vision through her mind over and over hoping for just one clear image.

Maria wrapped Liz into a hug. “Oh honey…you have to tell us what you saw. We’ll stop it. I swear we will!”

“The vision was like this huge blur of images…disjointed, out of order. It doesn’t make any sense! The dupes were there. They had Isabel. Alex and Max were laying on the ground…blood…there was just so much blood…” Liz dissolved into tears all over again, as though she was reliving the entire scene.

“Where were we, Liz? Was it here? How much time do we have?” Michael pushed.

“I couldn’t tell where we were. The images were moving too quickly. Max and Alex were lying in the grass. I saw our trucks in the background. There were all these other people…guns…they had guns. Rath got shot. At first I thought the other people were FBI but they can’t be…they just can’t.” Liz said, sniffling into a tissue.

“Are you sure they weren’t FBI? Future Max said he was on the run from both the FBI and Kivar’s men. That’s exactly what we’re doing now. Are you positive it wasn’t them?” Ava asked urgently.

“They couldn’t have been FBI! They just couldn’t have been. The strangers in my vision were trying to protect us!” Liz said, wide-eyed.

Her outburst was met with shocked silence around the room. Who, other than the people in that very room, would want to protect them?

Kyle stood up and started pacing. “I can’t believe we don’t even know where it happens! We don’t know when it happens. We can’t pick up and leave here without knowing more about this. What if our leaving is what starts the whole thing?”

“We don’t have to leave here yet. First, we should see if Isabel can get a good look at Liz’s vision…maybe she can help Liz make some sense out of it. Second, I think we should join our powers just long enough to find out where the dupes are. There aren’t any crowds of armed strangers out there, so we know this isn’t going down right this second.” Maria said, planning out loud.

“First we’ll call the soldiers and put them on high alert. They need to know what’s coming. After that we’ll join our powers, and then after that Isabel can try to help.” Michael said, liking Maria’s plan but rearranging it a bit.

Liz looked up sadly. “There was a purple shield around us all…Maria’s purple shield. I could hear Michael’s blasts in the background. There were loud gunshots echoing around us. Max and Alex were down. Rath had Isabel. I didn’t see Kyle and Ava anywhere. And if…if I was OK, Maria wouldn’t have been the one shielding everyone.” A tear trailed down Liz’s cheek. She wiped it away and quietly added her conclusion.

“I think Michael and Maria might have been the only survivors.”

Maria gasped. Michael sat down on the nearest bed with a thump. There really was no joy in being the ‘last man standing’. Knowing that everyone you loved might be taken from you at any moment was worse than the thought of facing your own demise. Liz’s confession definitely qualified as the very worst-case scenario. After a moment of stunned silence, Michael and Maria sprung into action.

“I’ll go back to my room and summon the guards. You guys see if you can find the dupes without me. No one leaves this room! I’ll be back in a minute.” Michael barked, already rushing out of the room.

“Alright…you guys heard the grouchy alien. Everybody hop to!” Maria said nervously. She plunked down on the bed next to Liz and grabbed her hand. The others gathered around and followed suit.

Again, the connection with the dupes was almost instantaneous. Even without Michael, they were able to locate the others easily. They could clearly see the red rock formations of the Rocky Mountains outside the window of the dupes’ hideout. The dupes were obviously still out west somewhere.

“I don’t get it…the dupes are no where near here!” Isabel said in frustration when they were finished. “Are you 100% sure that’s who you saw in the vision Liz?”

“Of course I’m sure! If it wasn’t them, then you explain to me why there were two of you and why Michael was trying to kill us!” Liz snapped.

Nancy Parker threw up her hands and called for calm. “Yelling is going to get us nowhere here. Why don’t you let Isabel help you honey…do your psychic connection thing and then she can see for herself.”

Liz looked away, embarrassed about her outburst. “I’m sorry Iz. This is just…” Liz sighed in defeat. “How do I show you what I saw?”

Isabel and Alex both sat down next to Liz. They joined hands and then reached for Liz’s. Isabel fixed her with an embarrassed smile.

“I’m sorry too Liz. Maybe if we can put our heads together on this one, we can figure it out faster. All I need you to do is look at me. Take a deep breath, try to relax and then think about what you were doing right before the vision started.” Isabel said quietly. The others leaned closely in to watch.

Isabel, Alex and Liz closed their eyes in concentration. Michael came back into the room just as the three connected. There was silence around the room as the others waited anxiously to see if they would be able to decipher the vision.

Isabel abruptly opened her eyes and announced. “It was them…the dupes. They’re coming for us.”

FBI Director Adams was frantic as he listened to the audio footage from Kyle’s surveillance device. This was exactly what he was afraid of. The imposters were going to lodge some kind of attack and he had no idea how it was going to go down or how they could prevent it. He got on the phone and started barking orders.

“I need a medical team at the Subjects’ motel immediately!” He barked. “Send Agent Garrett down there too. Get a room in the motel but don’t make contact with the Subjects yet …If Ms. Parker has another episode like she did earlier, we might have to send in the med techs.”

Adams slammed down the phone but picked it up and started dialing again immediately. “I need a chopper now. We’re going to Florida. I want a mobile command unit ready and waiting for me when we land.” There was a pause as he listened to Agent Ford on the other end of the line.

“No…send them all down to Florida. No point in watching the imposters any further because it sounds like they’re going to be on the move…and I don’t think they plan on driving. We need the whole crew down there before the imposters get there.”

Adams hung up without another word and then picked it up and dialed again. After speaking directly with the President and advising him on the current situation, he made one last call. He called his wife.

“I have to take a short trip…very last minute kind of thing. I just…I wanted to tell you I love you before I go…” He said, praying this wouldn’t be the last time he got to tell her that.

Less than two miles from the motel where the Roswell crew was staying, a tired woman sat in a similar motel, listening to an audio file on her laptop. She sighed as Rath started rambling on about surprising the Royals in Florida. She shook her head in irritation as she listened to the cocky man gloating over his plan.

“First two rules of engagement Rath…know your enemy and never underestimate him.” Courtney muttered with a roll of the eyes.

“God you guys are stupid. I hope the Eight kick your ass.” She yawned. Courtney leaned back on the bed and fell into a restless sleep. In her dreams, she saw the Royals being slaughtered, as she stood by doing nothing to stop it. She woke up with a start.

“They’re like helpless children. They’ve barely scratched the surface of their potential and they’re sitting ducks…” Courtney sat there wrestling with her conscience for a moment.

“They’re alone…no allies except for a handful of soldiers. Kivar’s dupes probably trained with the best on Antar. The Royals have all this power within their grasp but they don’t even know it.” Courtney continued debating with herself about the issue at hand. She knew what it was like to face evil head-on and lose. Regardless of her feelings about this new generation of Royals, could she really sit back and just let this happen?

“Oh hell…I hate it when the bullies pick on the little guys. They’re out of their league and someone’s got to do something. They won’t even know I was there…”

Coming in Chapter 30: Will the gang run again? Would it do them any good? The Eight make a bold attempt to get some answers about Liz's vision. Kyle has a startling realization about his dreams and maybe...just maybe, his dad was right. Maybe he is A LOT stronger than he thought.

sylus27 - Kyle's newfound abilities are going to be quite a shocker for all...him included. In fact, this part will reveal something that will be important in the third installment of this series.

Timelord31 - It would certainly make more sense for the FBI to contact the podsters now but since this is all new territory, the Feds are treading carefully. It's quite likely the choice will be taken out of their hands anyway...

Chapter 30: Answers to the Mystery

Before nervously retiring for the night Isabel and Alex had explained what they saw when they connected with Liz. Her vision was just as ghastly as she had implied. From what they could see, at some point in the future the dupes do find them and attack…in public no less. Isabel and Alex were able to confirm Liz’s initial suspicions about the strangers in the vision too. The armed men in the vision were definitely FBI.

Isabel had been able to slow down the images just enough to see that Maria was wearing a brand new Hard Rock Café t-shirt. That detail was enough to tell them that the attack wasn’t going down in the next 48 hours. Michael’s group planned on visiting the Hard Rock Café on the last day of their Disney stay so Maria didn’t even own the souvenir t-shirt yet.

“We have to be careful about every move we make from here on out. Anything we change could throw off the events that led up to Liz’s vision.” Michael cautioned them.

Isabel gasped. “Maybe that’s a good idea! We don’t want her vision to play out. I’ve seen it Michael and we die. If we can change that then I say let’s go for it!”

“I think Michael’s right, Iz. What if we change something and the dupes show up sooner? God, what if we already have? We’re not ready. The dupes probably learned to use their powers freely on Antar but we’ve never had that opportunity. Our practice sessions were sporadic at best and we’re just not ready.” Max pointed out in frustration.

“Yeah, but our powers are triggered by emotions, right? I’m pretty sure it’s clear by now that those guys don’t have any emotions at all. Their powers are the same as ours. If they’re strong, then in theory, we’re stronger.” Kyle pointed out.

Ava shook her head. “Not true. They definitely have emotions. They’re selfish to the core but they’ve mastered ‘anger’ and ‘want’ quite well…trust me. If they trained on Antar, which I’m sure they did, then they’re probably way better at our powers than we are.”

“If they’re so great, then how come they didn’t find us earlier?” Maria asked in irritation. Based on the raw energy she felt every time she used her powers, she knew they could be a force to be reckoned with. The thought of facing off against someone else who was just as powerful and knew how to harness it was intimidating to say the least.

Ava snorted. “They might be strong, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re smart. Granted, they’re not complete idiots, but they always had a problem seeing the bigger picture. That’s their weakness…they’re short sighted. Maybe they just haven’t managed to come up with a decent plan until now.”

Michael sighed. “Maybe they’re still learning, just like we are. When they came after us themselves, we found them, so they got a clue and sent the skins instead. When the skins couldn’t find us, they probably figured out that we split up so they came up with a better idea. We’re both trying to stay one step ahead of each other. They’re essentially us…only mean, with bad hair.”

Isabel rolled her eyes. “Well trial and error isn’t going to cut it when we’re talking about our lives here. Right at the moment they’re one step ahead of us and we’re going to have to do something about that."

“I agree completely. She’s right.” Max said, pointing to Isabel. “I don’t think running is the answer though because then we’ll throw off everything that led to Liz’s vision. We’ll be back to square one. If they can find us here, they can find us anywhere. The problem is…if we run, we’ll have no idea how long it’ll take them to find us again and we might not get a conveniently timed premonition to clue us in before they show up next time.”

“Now you’re talking!” Maria said in agreement. “I think we should stay here for one more day and try to sort out how they found us and where the FBI fits in with all this. According to the vision, they won’t be here for another two days at least, so we have time to get our act together before everything goes to crap.”

After a bit more talking, everyone agreed that they should stick around for at least one more day and try to piece together the rest of the mystery. There was no point making a run for it now if they didn’t even know how the dupes had found them in the first place. If the dupes were still in Utah, then they must be tracking the two groups with their powers somehow. It wouldn’t matter where the Roswell crew ran if that was the case. If the dupes could find them in Florida, then they could find them somewhere else just as easily.

The gang made serious plans to get some sleep and then tomorrow they would whip out every power in their arsenal to find a way to prepare for the attack. Their first goal was to figure out how the dupes were going to find them and then their next move was to try to decipher why the FBI appeared to be protecting them.

*************************************************

Later that night, Kyle found himself struggling with nightmares again. He woke up abruptly at 3am, but this time felt different than the last. He had no memory of the dream, but the feelings of outrage were still there though. He was exhausted too…like he had just run a marathon. He couldn’t make any sense out of it.

“OK…I need to get some sleep. Buddha, help me. OK…the greatest goodness is a peaceful mind. The greatest meditation is a mind that lets go. The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances…”

Kyle fell back to sleep in the middle of his mantra. It had helped to calm his mind and focus his thoughts just enough to slip into a very enlightening dream. He slipped right into Lonnie’s dream to be exact.

Lonnie was swallowed up in the embrace of a dark haired man. Kyle thought it was Isabel until Lonnie whipped around and grinned. The man faded into the shadows and disappeared.

“Well hello there, Opie! I’m surprised to see you here. Seems like we had you pegged all wrong. Here we thought you were Ava’s man. Ava can’t dreamwalk so you must be hangin with Isabel some on the side, eh?” Lonnie said with a smirk.

Kyle looked around in horror. This was real. He just knew it. How he’d ended up in Lonnie’s dream was just as much a mystery to him as it was to her. It certainly had nothing to do with any of the lewd things Lonnie was suggesting about he and Isabel though.

“Lonnie! Long time no see. So who was the poor guy you had your tentacles wrapped around a minute ago?” Kyle quipped nervously.

Lonnie let out an ear splitting laugh. “You honestly have no idea who that was?” She asked. Seeing the blush rise up Kyle’s cheeks, she added, “See? This is exactly why he keeps winning. You guys are just too stupid to beat him!”

“That was Kivar?!” Kyle blurted out. As soon as he realized how naïve he sounded, he scrambled to cover his blunder. “So apparently you were the last woman on Antar, huh? I almost feel pity for the guy!”

“You better watch yourself, Opie. Keep mouthing off like that and I’ll have to kill you first. Or perhaps your little bleeding heart would prefer to watch me kill all of your friends first. What do you say? You want to go first…or last?”

Kyle suddenly had an idea. “As amusing as your threats are Lonnie, you don’t have me fooled for a second. You guys will never find us. You’re just not strong enough.” He taunted.

Lonnie immediately lost her temper. “Don’t be so cocky little man. Who says we don’t know where you are already? I bet it would break your soft little heart if you knew how we found you…”

Kyle plastered on his best condescending grin. “Do you honestly think it matters if you find us? Your powers are no match for ours. I’m not all that concerned.”

“I wouldn’t be so confident if I were you, Opie. You forget…we’ve been on Antar for a long time. You might think you’re all big and bad because you have the power of the Eight behind you but keep in mind…you guys weren’t the ones who spent nearly a year training with Kivar himself. You’re out of your league boy.” Lonnie said with a confident, yet sinister smile.

Kyle’s heart thudded in panic at the thought of Kivar training the dupes. He struggled to calm his breaths and think clearly. He knew Lonnie wasn’t lying about Kivar. Somehow he just knew it. If the dupes really had trained with Kivar, on Antar, then they were a much bigger threat than they ever had been before. He had to find their weakness. He had to get as much information from Lonnie as he could before she kicked him out of her head so that maybe…just maybe, he and his friends would be able to come up with a defense strategy. Kyle plastered on a calm smile and tried to get Lonnie to drop her guard for a minute.

“You know, I’m really surprised Kivar bothered with you guys at all. I mean, you guys are the defective ones! What’s the point? We kicked your asses and dumped you on his doorstep. I guess I just don’t understand why he let you live at all.” Kyle said, wearing the smuggest grin he could muster.

Lonnie’s eyes flashed with hatred and she let her guard down without even realizing it. As Lonnie lashed out with a string of taunts and insults, Kyle used the momentary distraction to open his mind to her raging emotions. This was the first time he’d tried to read anyone other than Ava and he was absolutely shocked by the experience. He wasn’t able to latch on to any of Lonnie’s thoughts at first, but he was able to embrace a violent tide of her emotions. She was still ridiculing him when her thoughts suddenly became clear to him. He gasped at the stunning clarity.

Lonnie’s eyes narrowed when she realized Kyle was scanning her thoughts. “I guess we did underestimate you, Opie. Never again though…never again. Congratulations little man. Now, you die last.” With that, Lonnie winked and kicked Kyle out of her head.

Kyle awoke with a start. The sun was starting to shine through the motel blinds. It was nearly 6am already. Kyle started to wake the rest of the men and announced that they all had five minutes to get dressed because he had big news to share with the whole group. While the men were tumbling out of bed and groping for their cloths, Kyle quickly stopped by each of the other motel rooms to wake the troops and get them moving.

*************************************************

Instead of cramming into Liz’s room as they had the night before, the entire gang met at a park just behind the motel. It was too early in the morning for anyone else to be out so the crew had the entire park to themselves. They got straight down to business the second they arrived.

“I know how the dupes found us but you guys have to promise me that you’ll hear me out before you start yelling.” Kyle started.

“You’re practically my brother so I get to yell at you whether you deserve it or not. Now, get on with it because I haven’t had my morning coffee yet.” Maria said with a nervous smile.

“Look guys…I didn’t know. You’ve got to believe that.” Kyle paused nervously. “The dupes didn’t find us. They found me.”

Before Kyle got another word out, Max blurted, “The dreams. It was the dreams, wasn’t it?”

“Dreams? You mean they went into your head?!” Ava said, appalled. “Oh my God…I could’ve stopped them! I should’ve known! Check him, Max. Make sure they didn’t do any permanent damage!”

Kyle batted Max’s hands away. “I’m fine Ava. I promise. This wasn’t your fault and there was no way you could’ve known. There is a lot I have to tell you guys so no more comments from the peanut gallery until I’m finished, OK?”

Kyle spent the next ten minutes explaining about his mysterious dreamwalk earlier and what he saw in Lonnie’s head. He drove the point home when he told them that the dupes planned on teleporting directly to their location as soon as they managed to pin it down.

“I thought Isabel and Alex were our only dreamwalkers. Ava, have you ever dreamwalked anyone before?” Liz asked in confusion.

Ava shook her head. “Never. I always knew when Lonnie was trying to dreamwalk me and I was able to control what happened when she found me on the dream plane but…I never actually tried to initiate a dreamwalk myself.”

“I suspect that our powers are all a bit intermixed now. We’ve been traveling together for months and we were all close before that even. Maybe our mutual connections help us access powers we normally wouldn’t be able to use. Think about it…I’m connected to Iz, who’s connected to Max, who’s connected to Liz, who’s connected to Maria…and so on. We might have this collective pool of strength to work with and we never even knew it.” Alex mused.

Liz gasped. “I can’t believe we never thought of that before! That’s why Maria can make a shield. That’s why Kyle could dreamwalk Lonnie. We can tap into each other’s powers but we never know it. How would we? I wouldn’t even begin to understand how to read other people’s minds like Isabel does or do that disappearing trick that Ava does. It would never even have occurred to me to try. But if one of us is under extreme stress like Kyle was…” Liz trailed off thinking about all the possibilities this scenario would present.

“So you’re saying we’re like the Borg then right? You know…Star Trek…the collective consciousness. We’re much better looking of course…” Kyle noticed everyone staring at him in exasperation. “I’m just saying…”

Isabel interrupted Kyle’s sci-fi monologue. “I don’t understand though. How did Kyle manage to connect with Lonnie without even trying?”

Max shrugged in confusion. “If Alex’s theory is correct, then we’re probably a lot stronger than we thought. If we have this collective pool of power between us because of our connections to each other then that would also imply that we have the entire power of the Eight behind our individual powers too.”

“Maybe, but why couldn’t Kyle remember being dreamwalked? You guys always remember my dreamwalks. There’s no memory loss involved. You remember those dreams better than you remember your normal ones. Why wouldn’t Kyle have known this earlier?” Isabel insisted.

Everyone looked up startled as a vicious string of curses erupted from Ava. “God, we’re so stupid! Lonnie can’t connect to Kyle by herself because she barely knows him and she doesn’t have any power of Eight or whatever to back her up. She would’ve needed someone who already knew how to get in his head. That bitch…she let them in your head and then she mindwarped you so you wouldn’t remember. I promised you she would never hurt you again. I promised!”

“Tess?!” Maria started snarling threats under her breath. “I’m going to fry that frizzy little bleach blonde head of hers and then I’m going to blast her smoldering carcass into next week. Then I’ll use Max’s healing abilities to fix her just so I can do it all over again…”

Michael wrapped his arms around Maria in comfort. “Not to be insensitive here but that’s kind of my strong suit anyway so…Max, go heal Kyle’s head. The rest of you, get ready to join your powers so we can try to get a handle on what’s going on with those FBI agents from Liz’s vision. After that we can worry about who gets to take the first shot at Tess.”

“You hold her and I’ll slap her…” Maria muttered quietly to Ava. Ava shot her a fiery look so Maria edited her plan a bit. “Ok fine. I’ll hold her and you can slap her.”

Max didn’t spend very long at all scanning Kyle’s mind. Tess hadn’t done any real damage this time. From what Max could tell, Kyle must have been able to prevent the evil trio from getting too far into his subconscious. Ironically, he had managed to prevent the mental invasion without even realizing he was doing it. It was almost like an instinctual reaction.

“Kyle’s fine. They didn’t do any damage this time.” Max announced. He shook his head, almost in admiration. “You’re a lot stronger than you thought Kyle. To keep all three of them at bay the way you did…”

Ava threw her arms around Kyle in a fierce protective hug. Over her shoulder, Kyle could see his father nodding in relief. It was just as his dad had said the other day. Kyle was much stronger than he ever imagined. Apparently, they were all stronger than they had thought. It was just a matter of learning to use those emerging powers by the light of day now.

“I guess one good thing came from this.” Liz said hesitantly. “Now we know that Ava and Kyle can block dreamwalks just like Michael and Maria can block mindwarps. We have the means to block out two of the three dupes. That could help…”

“I get what you’re saying Liz, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are planning on dropping in on us without warning. If they can pinpoint exactly where we are, they can teleport in before the guards even realize they’re coming. How exactly do we block that?” Alex said.

Max and Michael locked eyes. “We don’t,” they said in unison.

“There’s nothing we can do about that. We all knew they were going to show up sooner or later… or the skins would anyway. At least now we know how they’ll be showing up.” Max said somberly.

Jeff Parker couldn’t listen in silence anymore. “I have a suggestion to make and I hope you guys will hear me out on this one.” As the group nodded, he continued.

“In the vision, Alex and Max were down, Rath had Isabel and Lizzie was MIA. Seems to me like all of the known healers were taken out first. I assume that was done on purpose. I’m not trying to say that any of you are more important than the rest but since you know the others will be attacking without warning maybe you should think about tightening up the ranks a bit. I know that didn’t work for you guys back on Antar, but honestly, what do you have to lose now?”

Michael thought the suggestion over for a minute. “Seems kind of pointless to stay in separate groups if we know the dupes can find us anyway, doesn’t it? And Mr. Parker’s probably right that they’re planning on going for the healers first. It would be a smart move in a twisted kind of way…”

Max nodded. “I agree. And that explains why Michael and Maria were the only ones left standing in Liz’s vision. They’ve never healed anyone. I think we need to figure out why those FBI agents were protecting us before we make any concrete decisions though. We need all the facts before we can decide where to go from here.”

After a bit of discussion, the group decided that they should join their powers and try to connect directly to the agents Liz saw most clearly in her vision. There was one woman in particular that Liz got a really good look at. If they could somehow find a way to capture that impression and connect to the woman, maybe they could find some answers. This was uncharted territory but if their latent powers really were as strong as they were starting to believe, then maybe it would work.

After connecting to each other, the gang was able to link to Liz’s vision very quickly. They all viewed the grizzly images together this time. Again, Isabel and Alex concentrated on slowing down the chaotic scene. Soon the gang saw a beautiful brunette woman in full riot gear come into view. In the midst of the vision-battle, she threw herself protectively in front of the injured bodies of Max and Alex, leveling her massive gun at Rath and Tess in the process. A look of sadness crossed the woman’s face. The gang watched in horror as Rath fired off a fatal blast.

Without warning, the scene changed dramatically. Everything went white for a moment. “I think we got her!” Isabel gasped. Everyone was quiet as they waited for a sign that they’d succeeded at connecting with the woman.

Slowly, an unfamiliar room came into focus. It looked like a living room of sorts. The beautiful brunette woman from Liz's premonition was sitting on a couch, rifling through file folders. She would read for a bit and then stop to make notes on a worn legal pad. Chewing her pen between her teeth, the woman would study her notes for a bit and then go back to reading the files again.

“Will she know we’re here?” Maria whispered.

Isabel and Alex shook their heads. “No. We’re seeing one of her memories here. You know what they say about your life flashing before your eyes just before you die? Well this is her life.” Alex murmured sadly. The gang went silent again as the woman started thinking out loud.

“Extraordinary! They’ve come here seeking asylum of some sort…it’s so obvious. Why Earth though?” The woman thumbed through a few more pages and began mumbling to herself again.

“Highly evolved sense of morality…” She shook her head in irritation. “So much for nature versus nurture. Nurture obviously isn’t much of a factor in their species. The fact that Michael never killed that bastard says a lot…”

Michael looked away in embarrassment as the woman muttered about his file. She was apparently privy to all of his foster care records and obviously, she found the information appalling.

The woman snorted. “What does it say about the human species that we tiptoe around, spying on people who just want to be left alone…just to satisfy our own sense of curiosity?”

The scene abruptly shifted and the gang found themselves observing a high level meeting of some sort. They were in a posh office, complete with plush navy carpet and a conference table. A young blonde haired man was saying something about “the Roswell bunch…superior…imposters no humanity at all…”

The gang watched in silence as a group of FBI agents discussed their every move. It was obvious that the FBI had bugged them at some point. They were talking about audio surveillance files. Max shook his head in irritation because none of them had realized it earlier. He listened closely as the agents spoke of his friends as though they knew them well.

“The President is adamant that we keep the imposters at bay. Whereas the Roswell crew consistently avoids confrontation, the imposters purposely seek it out. The duplicates are leaving a trail of dead civilians in their wake. It’s quite obvious who the good guys are here.” A short balding man commented.

A timid looking redhead added her two cents. “What I still don’t understand is, with all this evidence, how exactly did Agent Pierce conclude that these Roswell kids were a threat? Obviously they have the potential to be a threat with their advanced physiology but every bit of evidence I’ve seen thus far points to them being peaceful by nature. What am I missing here?”

The brunette from Liz’s vision cleared her throat. “I took the liberty of reviewing Agent Pierce’s psychological profile when this mission began. Like the rest of you, I wanted to know where he was coming from. How do I put this…Agent Pierce was…well, frankly I’m stunned that he was admitted to the training academy in the first place. His profile screams ‘sociopath’. He was clearly unstable from day one. I wouldn’t put one ounce of faith into any of that man’s conclusions.”

The gang was less than surprised to see Professor Harrison from Las Cruces sitting next to the brunette woman. They had figured out he was FBI just before leaving Las Cruces, so it would stand to reason he would be an associate of hers.

“Is it possible that Pierce got the Roswell crew mixed up with the imposters? We know the imposters are dangerous. If that were the case, then it would be obvious where his assessments came from. Right faces, wrong people.” Harrison mused.

The scene faded and the gang found themselves alone in a room with the brunette again. She was writing in a journal of some kind. Feeling a bit guilty, the group leaned forward and strained to read the woman’s writing.

"It seems odd that we insist on operating under this false indifferent façade. The very fact that we care enough to keep exploring their history gives lie to our indifference. The fact that I feel guilty for our continued invasion of their privacy, which we have so cleverly labeled ‘surveillance’, shows my utter lack of indifference. I stopped being neutral the day they left Las Cruces. They ran from a fight they easily could have won. Winning…now there’s a double-edged sword. See, they already know what most humans haven’t figured out yet. In war, there are no winners. The day you give up your ideals is the day you give up your soul. They could have destroyed their enemies right there at Las Cruces and I’m sure they knew it. In one subtle move, they could’ve stolen their lives back and no one would have known. No one they were aware of anyway. Yet they didn’t. They ran. The thing about aggressive societies is, they don’t realize that choosing not to fight is vastly different than being afraid to fight. Yes these people are afraid, but they’re staying true to their ideals. That is brave. I admire their strength…their love for each other…”

The gang spied on this woman’s memories for far longer than they had intended. When they broke the connection, they were surprised to see that nearly 30 minutes had passed. Thankfully, the park was still completely empty. They quickly tried to brief their parents on what they’d seen. They left out the part about reading the woman’s journal, but the didn’t leave out any other details. There was a moment of stunned silence after they finished their tale. Not surprisingly, Amy Deluca was the first parent to speak up.

“Wait a minute. So you’re saying that they actually get it? They finally get it?” Amy asked bluntly.

“Well I’m not entirely sure how much they ‘get’ but they definitely suspect that we’re the good guys now.” Alex explained. “They’ve been stalling the dupes and covering our tracks for months now. Apparently the President himself ordered our protection.”

Nancy Parker sputtered in shock. “The President?! How exactly is it that the President of the United States knows of your existence and orders your protection but never bothers to let any of us in on that fact?”

“He’s smart.” Philip snorted. “It almost makes me wish I’d voted for the guy. First of all, he’s smart enough to know that all of you are American citizens because technically…you were ‘born’ on US soil. Secondly, I assume his people have informed him about what kind of technology was on those Roswell ships from the ’47 crash. He has to know he’d be risking interstellar attack if he allows you to die here…”

Charles Whitman looked less than impressed. “So basically, they gave you guys the benefit of the doubt because they were afraid the planet would be annihilated if they didn’t. Pardon me if I don’t sound terribly grateful about that.”

Liz picked at her shirt nervously. “It’s entirely likely that they’re listening to everything we say right now so let’s all just try to stay positive for a minute. The important thing is, they seem to have no intention of carting us off to some secret military base for tests…” She trailed off as Michael interrupted.

“Again. You mean…they don’t seem to have plans to drag us off to some secret base for tests again. I’ll go out on a limb and say I might be willing to trust that brunette woman…maybe…but there is no way I’m ready to trust her superiors. If they know we’re the good guys, then where the hell were they when Max was…” Michael abruptly stopped ranting when he saw Max turn a pitiful shade of gray.

“I think I agree with the big guy on this one.” Kyle said. “They haven’t exactly been very forthcoming with their plans up until now. Do you honestly think they planned on babysitting us for a while and then everything that happened with Pierce would just be forgotten?”

“Did you recognize any of the people we saw in that lady’s memories Max?” Maria asked gently. Even after all they’d seen in the woman’s memories, they still didn’t know her name.

Max thought for a moment and then shook his head. “No, I didn’t. I can’t be one hundred percent sure that none of them were at the base where I was held, but I know I never saw them there.”

“I’m only asking because I got this really good vibe from that lady. She was so…real. And then in that meeting, the others were talking about Pierce like he was a bug under a microscope or something. They obviously don’t trust him…” Maria explained.

“So you don’t think they were involved with the Special Unit?” Alex asked Maria. She didn’t even get a chance to answer before another idea hit him.

“Oh hey! That would explain a lot! Of course they wouldn’t know where he got his ideas or what he was doing, because after you guys sprung Max, Nasedo impersonated Pierce and destroyed all the files.” Alex said in a rush.

“Yeah, but if Nasedo destroyed all of the files then why are they following us again?” Michael grumbled.

Ava’s hands flew to her mouth. “They followed the chain of evidence! Let’s assume that Nasedo could have missed something when he was destroying Pierce’s files. It’s not that unlikely if you really think about it. So, something gets left behind and inevitably someone else finds it. This someone would’ve had to do Pierce’s research all over from scratch because Nasedo destroyed everything else…”

Maria caught on immediately and jumped in. “All law enforcement agents are taught to look at evidence from a neutral standpoint. We learned about that in our criminal justice classes! You can’t solve a mystery properly if you’ve already got your mind made up before you even see the evidence. Pierce already had his mind made up and we all know it. If the person who found his leftover files didn’t have those same preconceived notions though…” Maria waved her hands in excitement, waiting for the point to sink in.

“An unbiased person would be able to connect the dots and see that we’re not a threat…” Isabel said in awe. She was almost afraid to hope that was possible.

The entire group was so wrapped up in their thoughts that they didn’t even notice that they were quietly being surrounded. On one side of the park was a large group of armed FBI agents. On the other side, Courtney crept up and watched from the shadows. Directly between the two newcomers, less than a yard away from the distracted podsquad, the evil trio appeared.

“Not a threat? I’d say that’s an understatement, wouldn’t you Isabel?” Rath sneered.
