Twenty-One
"You ladies certainly out did yourself once again," Phillip Evans smiled happily as he patted his full belly. Thanksgiving lunch had been wonderful and now everyone was full.
"Thank you," Diane said.
Jeff Parker looked at the clock then. "The game will be starting shortly guys," he smiled.
The women all exchanged annoyed glances knowing that they would be left with cleaning up.
"I think you should clean up first Alex," Isabel spoke up. The look on her face left no room for argument and Alex knew that if he didn't do as asked that there would be hell to pay.
"It would be my pleasure Isabel," he answered with a forced smile.
"Whipped," Max coughed and chuckled at his best friend.
"For that you can help too Max," Diane spoke up.
Max's smile quickly fell. "Sure," he replied and when he looked up he noticed that Liz was barely able to conceal her amusement.
"You know," Isabel spoke up then. "I went looking for you this morning Max to tell you to get up for breakfast, and I couldn't find you anywhere," she said.
Liz and Max both instantly paled. What the hell was Isabel doing?
Her comment managed to get the attention of the table and everyone was waiting for Max to respond.
"Actually he was with me," Liz spoke up shocking Max.
All eyes turned curiously to Liz then not sure exactly what she was saying.
"Yeah I had to get some things from my room," Max blurted out.
Liz rolled her eyes at her boyfriends lame attempt to get them out of what he assumed would be trouble.
"Oh…" Diane began.
"He did not," Liz sighed.
"Liz!" Max hissed.
"What?" Liz looked at him. Her look conveyed the question she was asking. I thought you wanted to tell them? He did but just not the way Liz was planning it.
"Liz is there something you want to tell us?" Nancy asked.
"Max and I are together," she said bluntly.
Both sets of parent’s eyes both went wide with surprise. Soon though Jeff and Phillip were both smiling and congratulating each other for something that Liz had no clue about.
"Well that's nice sweetie," Nancy told her. "How long have you two been dating and why didn't you tell us sooner?"
"We only really defined things a few days ago," Liz answered both questions.
Max breathed a sigh of relief from his side of the table happy that Jeff Parker wasn't upset about him dating, and obviously sleeping with his daughter.
"I knew the plan was going to work but I never guessed it would work this well," Jeff said jovially then.
"Jeff!" Nancy hissed but she was too late.
"What are you talking about?" Max asked.
"Nothing," Phillip spoke up.
"Uh huh, we're not buying that," Liz replied.
"It's nothing sweetie," Nancy told her.
"Its sounds like something."
"Well, we all thought it was time that you and Max worked through your problems," Nancy started.
"Problems?" Max asked dumbly.
"For some reason you never got along and you were always doing something to upset Liz, Max," Diane added.
"So your fathers devised the plan that maybe if you had to live together that you might become friends," Nancy finished.
Liz and Max looked at each and then back to their parents.
"You made me go through months of hell just so Max would stop being such a asshole towards me?" Liz yelled angrily.
Max was shocked by the harshness of Liz's words and sunk back into his seat.
He was shocked at what his parents had done but he was also humble enough to realize that because of their meddling he had realized what a wonderful person Liz was and had fallen in love with her. Realistically, he should be thanking them.
"I think we'll start cleaning up," Isabel said looking for a quick escape for her and Alex.
"It worked didn't it?" Jeff replied to his daughter's outburst.
"This time," Liz snapped. "But what if it hadn't father? Did you not care that for those first couple of months I was miserable living with him?"
So caught up in her tirade Liz failed to see how she was hurting Max with every word out of her mouth Jeff studied his daughter for second before he answered. "I didn't realize you had been that unhappy," he told her in all honestly. He had believed that her complaints about Max had been ludicrous.
"Well I was," Liz admitted.
Unable to take listening to Liz talking about how unhappy she had been with him a second longer Max pushed his seat back.
"Excuse me," he whispered.
Liz looked at him confused when he stood up and it was then she noticed that he wouldn't meet her eyes.
"Max?" She called out to him as she watched him disappear out of the living room and towards his bedroom.
It took a few seconds for Liz to work out what had happened and as soon as she did she jumped to her feet and took of after Max.

The door to the bedroom was closed as Liz approached but that didn't stop her from walking straight in.
Max was going through his draws and pulling a few things out and placing them in a pile on the bed. He didn't look up when she entered.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Just getting a few things so I don't have to bother you," he answered concentrating on what he was doing.
"I'm sorry," she blurted out then.
Max looked up at her then and he could tell immediately that she meant it.
"What for," he shrugged, "It's the way you feel."
"It's the way I felt," she replied, "But that didn't mean I had to be so harsh about it."
"I didn't realize you hated living with me so much," he said sadly.
"It wasn't you," Liz said begging him to listen to her. "It was the situation. You didn't want me there any more than I wanted to be there," she pointed out.
"I know," he nodded.
"I'm just angry that our parents did that to us," she told him finally moving forward so that she could get closer to him.
"I get that," he said.
"Why aren't you angry with them?" Liz asked.
"Because even though what they did was wrong, and they meddled, as far as I'm concerned it's the best thing that ever happened to me," he said.
"It is for me too," she told him.
"Really?" He asked his eyes rose in question.
"Wow, I'm really terrible at this," Liz laughed bitterly. "You're the one who had relationship issues yet I'm the one who keeps stuffing things up between us." She said more to herself than to Max.
"I'm sorry if you thought for a second that I'm not happy that we're together. I am, truth is I don't remember ever being this happy."
Max stopped to listen to her as she spoke.
"I don't want you to ever get out of my way, I like the idea of you being around all the time," she whispered.
Liz reached out tentatively then not sure if Max would welcome her touch but when he didn't flinch or avoid her she quickly covered the short distance between them and threw herself into his arms.
"I don't want to fight," she said against his chest.
Max chuckled. "We're not fighting," he told her.
"Good," she whispered, "I'm sorry if what I said hurt you."
"It hurt to hear that I made you so miserable," he shrugged.
Liz nodded acknowledging that, she knew there was nothing she could do about it.
"And for the record, I'm sorry for the way I treated you all those years," he said.
Liz nodded against his chest thankful for his apology.
"Can I ask why you were like that?" She asked.
"I guess I just used to get sick of hearing about how wonderful and perfect you were," he sighed. "My parent's were always talking about how well you did at school and how polite you were, it kind of got on my nerves."
"But I didn't do that on purpose," Liz said.
"I know," he nodded, "But once I started teasing you and saw how easy it was it was kind of hard to stop."
"I was such a geek," Liz said remorsefully.
Max chuckled. "Yeah that kind of didn't help," he said.
"I'm still a geek at heart you know. I still get good grades and I'm pretty polite," she teased him.
"Yeah but you certainly don't look like a geek anymore," Max groaned as he cupped her tight ass in his hands.
Liz swatted his hands away as she smiled. Although it was good to talk about the past it wasn't something that either of them really wanted to rehash. "So you're saying you don't love me for my mind but for my body?"
Max groaned. "I love you for both," he whispered.
Liz's startled eyes snapped up to meet his then.
"Come on," Max whispered then.
"What?"
"We should go back out,"
"Do we have to?" Liz whined.
"Yep, otherwise they'll be gloating for weeks that they were the ones that got us together," he told her.
"Imagine if they really knew how we got together?" Liz giggled.
"I don't think they'd enjoy that story," Max grinned.
Liz smiled as they headed out of the door hand in hand. "No I think you might be right about that, but it would be nice payback."
Their parents were still waiting at the table when they walked back in.
Before either of them had a chance to talk Jeff stood up. "Liz, I'm sorry that I didn't listen to you, it was wrong of me and I promise to not meddle in the future," he said.
Liz nodded and smiled at her father.
"Do I owe you an apology Max?" Phillip asked.
Max shook his head. "Nah, if I wasn't such an ass to Liz in the first place your plan would never have been necessary." He admitted.
"We are extremely happy for the both of you," Nancy told them.
"Thank you," Max nodded.
"Yeah we're pretty happy for ourselves too," Liz grinned.
