Trent looked at the pan, making certain he had done everything that was needed. “I guess that’s it. Now it cooks,” Trent said. Knowing the oven was ready, he picked the pan up from the counter and walked across to the oven. Opening the oven, he placed the pan on the center rack and then closed the oven. Setting the timer for twenty-five minutes, he decided that he should make another so that he could also try his newest dish.

Rath remained silent, waiting to see if Lonnie had the guts to mouth off to him. He could feel her glaring at him with each step they took towards the lab. Breathing in deeply and then exhaling, Lonnie attempted to get her temper under control, knowing she had to ask him correctly or he would make Neasa in charge permanently.

“Is Neasa only in charge while I am with Alex?” Lonnie asked a moment later. Rath lead Lonnie into the lab and answered, “Depends on Alex.” Alex looked up from his computer where he had Maria’s blood work up on the screen and said, “What depends on me?” - “Whether Neasa continues to run the Harem,” Rath answered. Lonnie noticed the Ophidian snakes swimming in a jar that was placed next to other instruments on his tray and started to back out of the room. She gasped when Rath grabbed her in one swift movement and handed her over to Alex.

“You are not putting that thing on me,” Lonnie screamed. Alex ignored Lonnie while injecting her with a sedative. Lifting her up, he placed her on the table and cuffed her arms above her head. Lonnie attempted to struggle but could tell that her body was numb from whatever Alex had given her. Alex spread her legs apart and shackled her feet together so she was pinned to the table. “Now I need to wait for the sedative to wear off before I can draw your blood,” Alex growled.

Lonnie gulped, knowing from the tone of his voice that Alex was not pleased with her. She didn’t like the evil smile he gave her just before he turned his attention to Rath. “I decided for an accurate reading that I will need access to the ritual room,” Alex said. Rath raised his right eyebrow while wondering where Alex was going with all his tests on the Ophidian snakes. He nodded his head, giving Alex permission with the nod of his head. “I am not getting in that tank,” Lonnie screamed.

Rath snickered, slightly amused by Lonnie’s obvious dislike of what she was going to go through. “Ya are a slave Lonnie. You have no choice in the matter,” Rath said. Lonnie blinked in surprise, knowing she was a slave but had always been allowed some freedom that he had granted her a long time ago. She never expected Alex to treat her like a slave since she thought he had honestly cared about her. Alex hated how Rath had just thrown the fact that Lonnie was a slave in her face. He knew the reason that he had chosen her was that if worst came to worse, he would finalize the ritual.

“Rath, I know that Lonnie has been your head slave for a very long time,” Alex said. Rath nodded his head, knowing what Alex wanted without him even finishing his sentence. The whole situation reminded him of Zan asking him for Clio. “Since no one had gone through the ritual without conception afterwards, I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind granting Lonnie her freedom,” Alex said. Lonnie gulped when she heard conception, definitely not wanting to be pregnant, and then gasped when Alex asked for her freedom.

Rath raised his right eyebrow, knowing that if he did what Alex was asking, Lonnie could just leave the castle, possibly pregnant with Alex’s child, if Alex did complete the ritual. He knew that the best solution would be to give Alex ownership of her. “I can give you ownership of Lonnie like I did Zan with Clio. What you choose to do afterwards is totally up to ya,” Rath said. Alex nodded his head in agreement, knowing he could grant Lonnie her freedom if he wanted.

“I expect to be told immediately if any of this concerns Ria,” Rath said. Alex nodded his head yes and said, “Just working on a theory right now.” Rath nodded his head and walked out of the lab. Lonnie waited until she was certain Rath was far enough away before she asked, “Does this so called theory of yours somehow prove that Maria is already pregnant?” Alex’s jaw dropped open in shock while he connected the similarities between the Ophidian and the chemical he was trying to identify in Maria’s blood.

“I’m not sure,” Alex answered honestly. Walking over to stand by the side of the lab table, he said, “I believe Maria could get pregnant without the snake, which is rare amongst our people but possible.” Lonnie knew what he said was true since she had been conceived the old fashioned way since the ritual was reserved for the people of Royal blood. Her mother had been lucky with her but had died along with the child she carried. Swallowing the sudden lump in her throat, she asked, “You have every intention of completing the ritual with me?”

Alex couldn’t help but smile in response. He knew when the snakes were removed, that Lonnie would crave sex badly and being eaten out wouldn’t quench the need inside her body. “I picked you because I love you, Lonnie, and if need be there is no one else that I would rather have my children with,” Alex said. Lonnie couldn’t help but smile at him before she said, “I love you, too, but right now I hate you, cause you are definitely that mad scientist.”

Alex shrugged his shoulders, knowing that he was considered the mad scientist. He hoped that his tests would help him to synthesize a shot that could be given a month before conception and then once a month during pregnancy so that the ritual could be a choice instead a necessity. He figured that if he could synthesize the shot, that he might be able to convince Zan to allow him to administer the shot to Clio.

Walking down the corridor, Rath wondered what Alex had already discovered and wasn’t telling him. He knew the snakes contained a hormone that aided the females of his species in child bearing. Not wanting to even consider the possibility that some how the ritual might not be needed with her species, he quickly pushed all thoughts about Alex’s experiment out of his mind. Reaching his office, he pulled the door open and went inside his office to wait for Zan.

Knowing he needed to have one of the soldiers take Melaina to Smeed for another slave, Rath decided to have Diomedes do that, so he could speak with him about Ambrosia, knowing that by the time he returned that the three of them should be done with what he had planned for later. He was also interested to see if Diomedes owned up to being the one that Ambrosia was always sneaking out of the Harem to see.

Walking over to his phone, Rath picked up the receiver and dialed the number he needed for the training area. After one of the soldiers there answered, he told him to send Diomedes to his office. Pulling back his chair, he sat down and wondered who would reach his office first. Zan is probably still busy wit Clio, he thought while knowing he himself would rather be back in his bedroom with Maria. He smirked, knowing she was fuming about not being allowed to go anywhere.

His office door opened a few moments later and Diomedes walked into his office. Closing the door, Diomedes walked over to in front of Rath’s desk and bowed his head. ‘Your highness,” Diomedes said. “At ease,” Rath said. Diomedes straightened his stance and looked directly into Rath’s eyes. Rath studied the soldier before him knowing that he was the one Ambrosia had gotten punished for on more the one occasion. Deciding to make him sweat, he said, “I have an errand for you to run for me.”

Diomedes nodded his head yes while trying to show he wasn’t intimidated, even though he was secretly scared out of his wits. He had never dealt with the King himself before today, he had always answered to Zan. “One of my slaves has been disobedient and I can no longer allow her to stay in my Harem,” Rath said. He paused to see if Diomedes believed that the slave he was talking about was Ambrosia. “Your highness I am just as much in the wrong as Ambrosia. I will do anything. Please don’t trade her,” Diomedes begged.

Rath felt Diomedes deserved to sweat since he deserved to be punished just as much as Ambrosia had, since she snuck out to be with him. “You are right in that ya were as much in the wrong as Ambrosia,” Rath said. He paused for a moment and then said, “The slave I am trading is not Ambrosia but Melaina.” Diomedes waited for Rath to continue, knowing he hadn’t finished talking yet. “From now on if you want to spend time with Ambrosia you go to the Harem and speak with Neasa about either being with Ambrosia there or taking her back to your quarters,” Rath said.

Diomedes couldn’t help but smile, knowing that access to the Harem was only granted to a few of Zan’s soldiers. He had happened to go with the two soldiers who were now currently away on an assignment for the King. “If Ambrosia sneaks out to see ya again, I will not only punish her but you as well and since Ambrosia has been punished these four last times, I am going to discuss with Zan later about extra training that ya will have to complete,” Rath said.

Diomedes nodded his head yes, signaling to Rath that he understood. “You will go get Melaina, take her to Smeed and trade her for another slave. Bring the slave back to Neasa and then stop by my quarters for Ambrosia,” Rath said. Diomedes blinked in surprise, while being more than happy to collect Ambrosia. “Zan will be told that when you come back, that I am dismissing you from duty to spend the evening with Ambrosia,” Rath said.

“Thank you, your highness,” Diomedes said. “There is a list of rules with the Harem that I expect to be followed,” Rath said. Diomedes nodded his head yes and said, “I will follow the rules.” Rath nodded his head and said, “The rules are simple, if Maria is there, under no circumstances are you allowed to be there. While there, if Neasa tells you to leave, then without question you shall.” Diomedes nodded his head, feeling the rules were simple while having a feeling that Maria wouldn’t be there very often since there was already talk among the men on how this new slave spends the nights in his quarters.

Rath narrowed his brown eyes for a moment almost as if he sensed Diomedes thoughts about the talk amongst the men in his army. Seeing Rath’s eyes narrow, Diomedes asked, “Is there a particular slave I should bring back with me?” Rath shrugged his shoulders not caring himself what was brought back, as long as the new slave was obedient. “Pick one that you would think the soldiers of higher rank might like,” Rath said. Diomedes nodded his head yes and said, “Anything else?” Rath shook his head no and said, “You are dismissed.”

Diomedes quickly turned and went over to the door. Opening the door, he stepped out of Rath’s office and out into the corridor. Closing the door, he walked down the corridor to the Harem, knowing that Neasa would tell him the second he entered that his rank was not high enough to be allowed access to the Harem. He groaned as he realized that the extra duties would be him earning the higher rank. I had better enjoy the time King Rath has granted me with Ambrosia tonight because I will be doing nothing but training for the next month.

Walking into the Harem, Diomedes wasn’t surprised when, as he suspected, Neasa shook her head and said, “You are not supposed to be in here.” Diomedes sighed before he said, “King Rath asked me to come get Melaina to take her to Smeed and trade for another slave.” He couldn’t help but look longingly at Ambrosia who he thought looked like she desperately needed release. Feeling his body respond to his thoughts, he quickly shook his head and forced himself to regain control of his body while Neasa brought Melaina over to him.

“Rath said she is to be traded for another. I have a request that the new slave has red hair,” Neasa said. Diomedes nodded his head yes and said, “I will tell Smeed a red head is preferred.” He couldn’t help but notice that Melaina wore a simple black dress which he assumed was the same thing she had been purchased in when she had been sold to the King. Motioning for Melaina to follow him, he lead her out of the Harem. He heard the phone ring just as they stepped out into the corridor and hoped Rath was calling Neasa and telling her about what was to happen later tonight.

Rath smirked, knowing he had no intentions of allowing the promotion he had just given Diomedes to be easy for him. The door to his office opened and a servant walked in, carrying a tray with his breakfast and morning coffee. She was wearing a red and black maids uniform with a ruffled hem. Rath watched the servant, knowing that unlike his slaves, he had thought all servants should wear a uniform that covered them completely, knowing that otherwise the servants could be a distraction.

She bowed her head in respect while placing the tray on his desk. Rath waited for the servant to raise her head and asked, “Did ya take a tray to my quarters for Ria?” - “Yes, your highness,” the servant answered. Rath nodded his head in approval and said, “That will be all.” She turned around and quickly walked out of his office. Lifting the lid, he found a large mug with coffee and a plate with fried eggs, green ham, and hash browns. He smirked, knowing that Maria had been given the same breakfast.

Hearing the door to his office close, Rath frowned, knowing he should have instructed the servant to inform him if Maria didn’t eat. I will just have to instruct the servant that delivers Maria her lunch to inform me if she hasn’t eaten. Picking the knife and fork up, he started to cut the ham into small stripes so he could eat. Hopefully Zan will be here when I am done eating. I will have to give him a hard time about keeping me waiting. He snickered, knowing giving Zan a hard time about Clio was what Zan had been doing to him since Maria’s arrival.

Meanwhile back in the lab, Alex picked the syringe up and walked over to Lonnie. He positioned the needle and as gently as possible pushed the needle into her skin. Lonnie hissed when the needle pinched her skin. Alex filled a vial and then another vial with her blood before slowly slipping the needle from her vein. Walking over to the counter, he labeled each vial and placed the vials in the stand. Without turning around, he said, “I know how much you hate needles and I am sorry to say I will be drawing at least two more vials of blood from you.”

Lonnie huffed while thinking, You are going to be sorry all right when I can get my hands on you. Tears filled her brown eyes while she watched Alex reach into the jar with the Ophidian snakes. Her heart pounded faster in her chest when she saw he had taken the largest snake out. Alex walked back over to her and said, “I really do love you.” Lonnie huffed and then said, “You have a funny way of showing me.”

Alex placed the snake on her body between the valley of her breasts. Lonnie shivered when she felt the snake touch her skin. She begged him with her brown eyes to change his mind. “Just think you will have more of my time,” Alex said. Lonnie glared at him and said, “You not only have me cuffed and shackled to a table but had Rath take away all the power he had given me over the years.” Alex sighed, knowing she was right. Stepping back, he watched the snake slowly move down her skin. Seeing the chemicals on her skin, he grabbed an instrument and squeezed, sucking the secretions into a test tube.

Lonnie whimpered while feeling her skin heat where the snake was slithering down her body. She started to struggle to get free when she saw the snake had almost reached her heat. “Alex!” Lonnie screamed. She swore the snake dug into her skin when she struggled. Alex moved his hand to her head and gently ran his fingers through her damp hair. Lonnie was unable to stop the small sigh from escaping her lips when she felt his hand touching her forehead and then running his fingers though her hair.

Attempting to lighten the mood, Alex said, “You do realize that after this, you will have me all to yourself.” Lonnie attempted to laugh but it came out more like a whimper when the snake reached her heat and slowly slipped inside of her. She screamed, feeling the snake slither around inside of her and gasped when her body felt as if the snake had caused her to climax. Tears filled her brown eyes, knowing that he would take her to the ritual room soon, a room she had never imagined herself being inside of, unless it was to help whomever Rath had chosen to bear his children in and out of the tank.

“I need to wait at least a half an hour to see what changes the snake has already caused in your blood,” Alex said. He believed the snake started to put the follicle stimulating hormone in her blood the second it entered her and then the Chorionic-Gonadotropin hormone, which he believed increased upon conception. Lonnie glared at Alex, knowing from the look on his face his mind was working a million miles a minute with the possibilities to anything he might have brewing inside his head.

Zan pulled the door open and walked into Rath’s office. Closing the door, he walked over to the desk and sat down in the other chair. “Sorry I’m late,” Zan said. Rath smirked before he said, “Clio was always hard to resist.” Zan nodded his head in agreement and said, “We both know that if you could, you would still be in bed with Maria.” Rath shrugged his shoulders, knowing that Zan was telling the truth. Not wanting to be frustrated all day since he couldn’t just drop everything to be with her, he said, “I don’t know if you were aware of how Melaina was giving Clio a hard time.”

Zan shook his head no and said, “I am assuming that Clio let Lonnie deal with her.” Rath nodded his head yes and said, “Melaina was trouble from the beginning.” Zan shook his head while looking slightly amused, knowing Rath had lost interest in Melaina after two weeks. “I decided to trade her to Smeed for another slave since I am unwilling to give her a chance to treat Maria badly,” Rath said. Zan snickered, knowing all along his reasons were somehow connected to Maria.

Rath decided to ignore the snicker and continued saying, “I was also informed that Ambrosia was caught sneaking out again to see Diomedes.” Zan made a mental note to have yet another talk with Diomedes about how he couldn’t just give in to his desires about Ambrosia since she technically still belonged to the King which could cause him to end up in the dungeon or worse if Rath was in a bad mood. “The only solution seemed to be to allow Diomedes access to the Harem,” Rath said.

Zan raised his right eyebrow, knowing Diomedes must have caught Rath in a good mood which meant Maria had pleased him earlier. “You are going to make him work for that increase in rank?” Zan asked. Rath snickered and nodded his head yes. “I was thinking that you could make the training required even more difficult somehow.” Zan snickered before saying, “I can do that. Have him so tired from all the training that if Ambrosia snuck out, he would have a hard time even getting it up.”

Rath laughed before he said, “I am informing Ambrosia that if she is caught sneaking out one more time that instead of being sold to Smeed I will demote Diomedes and he will have to re-earn his rank to be allowed access to the Harem.” Zan smirked, knowing that Diomedes would not be pleased if after all his hard work he was demoted and forced to redo all the rigorous training. “Diomedes should return with the new slave this evening,” Rath said. He growled, knowing he had forgotten to tell Diomedes that the new slave had to be taken to Alex first for the normal examination required by each slave brought into the castle.

“When we are through here, can you inform the guards at the entrance to the castle to have Diomedes take the new slave to Alex and wait before taking her to the Harem?” Rath asked. Zan nodded his head yes and asked, “How far is Alex taking this experiment of his with the snakes?” Rath smirked before he responded, “I believe Alex should be taking her to the ritual room soon.” Zan looked surprised while wondering how this connected to what Alex had been working on with Maria’s blood. He knew Alex was trying to discover everything he could about her species.

“Do you plan on having Maria go through the ritual?” Zan asked. Rath shook his head no, causing Zan to raise his right eyebrow at how quickly Rath shook his head no. “I am not interested in becoming a Father anytime soon,” Rath said. Zan had a feeling that Rath not wanting to be a father was caused by him believing he could be like his own father somehow. “Neasa is running the Harem in Lonnie’s absence. She should return in a couple of days and maybe then only run things until she starts to show,” Rath said.

“Clio will be staying in my quarters unless I am on duty,” Zan said. He grinned, knowing that if he had her before he came on duty like today she would still be in his bed while he was on duty like she was today. “I would like Maria to chose Clio as her female lover so that Maria spends as little time as possible at the Harem,” Rath said. Zan smirked, knowing all the soldiers had been informed to not even look at the King’s new slave Maria. “I was going to have Ambrosia join me and Ria tonight and then Diomedes will pick her up from my quarters,” Rath said.

Zan raised his right eyebrow, knowing even without asking that Rath had decided he didn’t want to share Maria when he could have her all to himself. “You just don’t wanna share Maria,” Zan said. Rath growled before he said, “I am trying to decide if I want Maria to myself tonight or if I am in the mood to watch her with Ambrosia.” Zan had an idea come to mind and said, “How about instead I bring Clio to your quarters and we watch them together.” He smirked before he said, “That means you would have to allow another male to look at Maria.”

Rath nodded his head yes and said, “Zan, you are different because ya would be watching Clio.” He knew Maria might not like the idea of having Zan watch her but liked Zan’s idea better, which was what caused him to say, “After dinner Maria and Clio can put on a little show for us.” Zan licked his lips, looking forward to watching Clio with Maria. Knowing they needed to talk about Smeed, he said, “Smeed has been doing his daily activities, nothing different. I believe the portal will be activated after Maria has been here three months.”

Rath thought that made sense, since the time between the last disturbance and Maria had been three months. He was silent for a few moments while making certain they had discussed everything that needed to be discussed. “Anything else that we needed to talk about?” Rath asked. Zan brought his hand to his eyebrow and scratched it before he said, “I think we covered everything.” Rath sighed, knowing that meant he had some paper work to do and Zan needed to go on duty.

Zan pushed back the chair and stood. “I will be over with Clio later.” Rath nodded his head yes and said, “I have a feeling Maria will be punished before the night is over.” Zan smirked, knowing that Maria wouldn’t be pleased when she discovered Zan was going to watch. Walking over to the door, he pulled the door open and stepped out into the corridor. Closing the door, he glanced down the hall to see Alex leading Lonnie down the corridor. He shook his head before continuing down the corridor in the direction of the training room.

Lonnie whimpered, feeling the snake inside of her with each step. She glared at Alex through the tears in her brown eyes. Alex sighed, knowing Lonnie was going to be mad at him for a long time. He attempted to reason with his consciousness by telling himself that making her go through the ritual was a right he had as a royal. Lonnie noticed the guilty look on his face and thought, You should feel guilty, you asshole.

Alex pulled the golden doors open and lead Lonnie into the ritual room. Lonnie backed away from Alex the second her brown eyes looked at the tank. She felt her body start to tremble knowing she had to get inside with the snakes. “Couldn’t you get the same results by just waiting twenty-four hours and taking this snake out?” Lonnie asked. Her voiced trembled, showing just how much she disliked what she had said. Alex ran his hands through his hair and said, “I’m not sure.”

Lonnie begged him with her brown eyes to consider her idea. “I need the results to reflect being put through the ritual,” Alex said. Lonnie whimpered while he took her hand in his hand and lead her over to the steps. “I hate you,” Lonnie said while walking up the steps. Alex sighed before he said, “The longer you put off getting in, the longer it will take for you to be done.” Lonnie reluctantly stepped into the tank and tried not to think about how she was climbing into water where snakes were swimming. She was surprised that in a sense her body felt almost completely relaxed while her mind was screaming in protest.

Alex had taken a sample of the water earlier, knowing there must be something in the water that prevented the women from just jumping out once they were left alone. He had found oil from the Valerian plant. The oil was a mild sedative that had a calming effect which was necessary, since most of the woman like Lonnie hated the fact that there were snakes all around them. “I will be back later to help you out so you can eat,” Alex said.

Lonnie rolled her eyes while half tempted to ask if he found the results he was looking for if she could stay out. Alex walked down the steps and out of the ritual room a moment later. Lonnie whimpered, feeling the snakes moving around her body. Stay away from me, she thought. She shifted her body in an attempt to get away from the snakes. Closing her brown eyes, she decided to think of all the ways that she could torture Alex later for her revenge.

Alex walked back into his lab a few moments later. He examined the blood he had taken from Lonnie half an hour after the snake had implanted itself. Typing his results onto the screen, he brought the results up from the last sample of blood he had taken from Maria. His brown eyes doubled in size at the results he found. Nibbling on his bottom lip, he contemplated asking Rath if he could get another sample of her blood but already knew what the results would be.

Reaching over for the jar with the snakes, Alex reached inside and took another one out. Placing the snake on the counter, he grabbed the syringe and poked the snake with the needle and drew out some of the chemicals from the snake’s skin. Slipping the needle out, he placed the snake back in the jar and started to analyse the chemical that was in the snake’s skin. Grabbing a pencil, he started to jot down notes on what he felt would be needed in order to synthesize the chemical into a shot.

Glancing up, Alex looked at the clock, making a mental note on when he had to return to the ritual room, knowing that if he didn’t, that he could become engrossed in his work. He tried not to think about what he felt now that he had found out about Maria, not wanting to be the one to break the news to Rath. I won’t really be sure until I take another sample of Lonnie’s blood when she has been in the tank for the full twenty-four hours. He smirked, knowing that there had never been a need for anything to prevent someone from getting pregnant.

Walking into his office, Michael sat down at his desk and wondered how long he would have to wait for Jim. Opening the drawer on his desk, he pulled out some paper and a pen. He knew what he wanted and that getting what he wanted wouldn’t be a problem since he was King. Glancing down at the paper a few moments later, he read over what he had written. I Michael Guerin grant Tess Harding her freedom deeming her no longer my slave and free. Singing the bottom, he placed a wax seal of a lion’s head on the paper next to his signature.

The door to his office opened a few moments later and Jim walked into his office. Sitting down in the chair across from Michael, he said, “Morning.” Michael nodded his head and said, “Morning.” Jim smirked, knowing the reason he had wanted to talk to him before Michael even said anything. Glancing down at the paper, he said, “You know since Tess isn’t from this planet this is technically not needed.” Michael nodded his head in agreement and said, “I know it isn’t needed for you or me, but I felt giving this to Tess would be the right thing to do.”

“I’m sure she will appreciate it,” Jim said. He watched Michael closely, knowing that Michael had found the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and make his queen. “I want you to have the local jeweler come here in the next couple of days so I can get her a ring,” Michael said. Jim smiled and nodded his head before he said, “I will make the arrangements.” He was silent for a moment before he said, “You should speak with Ismede before she leaves about coming back after you give Tess her ring.”

Michael nodded his head yes while knowing Jim was talking about having Ismede make her a gown. “Tess has to agree to be my wife and Queen,” Michael said. Jim couldn’t help but laugh at Michael. “If you think Tess will tell you no, I believe you should see the doc cause there is no way she will. I have seen the way she looks at you,” Jim said. Michael smirked before he said, “I know she loves me.” Jim couldn’t help but smile, knowing that Michael loved Tess just as much.

“Tess is having twins?” Jim asked. Michael nodded his head yes and said, “I figured Tess would want to have the ceremony before she started to show.” He frowned, knowing that with her size and build, Tess would start showing soon. “I don’t want Tess to feel I am rushing things,” Michael said. Jim understood what Michael was trying to say and said, “You are worrying about things that have no need to fret over.”

Michael sighed, knowing Jim was right. “I just want a simple ceremony with my close friends,” Michael said. He frowned while wishing his mom had met Tess and that he could have his brother there. Knowing the reasons behind the frown, Jim said, “Your mother would have adored Tess.” Michael nodded his head and smiled while wishing that she had met her. He felt a chill run down his spine knowing his mother would have hated how he had treated her in the beginning.

“Any suggestions on how I can end this war that rages between me and Rath?” Michael asked. Jim remained silent while he tried to decide the best way he could explain what he had discovered about Rath over the years. Michael narrowed his brown eyes not liking how Jim looked almost lost in his thoughts, almost like he didn’t want to answer the question he had been asked. Noticing how Michael narrowed his eyes, he said, “Rath is a complicated man.” Michael raised his right eyebrow in response.

“I used to be close friends with the soldier who was in charge of your brother’s training,” Jim said. Michael remained silent, knowing from the look in Jim’s eyes that they seemed almost pained. “Your mother had asked me to contact Phaedrus just so she could know how he was doing,” Jim said. Michael nodded his head in understanding, knowing he had wished the same thing. “I lied to your mother, telling her your father had intercepted the message from Phaedrus, knowing that for her to know the truth would have only caused her more pain,” Jim said.

Michael stared at Jim in shock while wondering what exactly had been in the report he had received all those years ago. Jim sighed, knowing Michael wanted answers. “I can’t tell you what happened over the years. I believe if I do and Rath were to find out he might feel that you are only contacting him because of sympathy,” Jim said. Michael felt a chill run down his spine while he waited for Jim to continue. “The connection you have to Rath would be the only way I can think of that you can get through to him,” Jim said.

“What connection? When I was five Rath broke our connection and I haven’t felt him since,” Michael said. Jim shook his head no and said, “When you were seven, you woke the whole castle up screaming one night.” Michael cut him off saying, “It must have been a nightmare since I remember the conversation we had like it was yesterday.” Jim didn’t want to go into details about the dream or how he had known that Rath unconsciously had opened their connection that night, since right after he had gotten Michael calm enough he had contacted Phaedrus to find out that Rath had been caught in their old room and whipped with a whip for punishment until Rath had passed out from the pain.

Michael growled in frustration, knowing from how Jim was acting, Rath was the last thing he cared to talk about. Jim sighed before he said, “You will have to look deep inside yourself for the answers to how to end this war.” Michael sighed before he said, “You are telling me that I will know.” Jim nodded his head yes and stood, knowing that Michael had to wait until Rath contacted him. “Your desire to end this war comes from two places, your love for Tess and the family you will have and your love for your brother.”

Michael nodded his head yes and said, “Rath is fine with how things are now. The only way I see that changing is if he decides he wants to be a father.” Jim doubted that Rath would ever want to be a father. He shrugged his shoulders and said, “Time will tell.” Walking over to the door, he opened the door. Looking at Michael, he said, “You could always try connecting with him like you used to when you were kids.” Michael watched Jim duck out of his office a moment alter and growled in frustration. Glancing at the clock, he wondered if Tess would be done soon.
