Chapter 16
Josef walked backwards to the door, his eyes never leaving the unknown vampire sitting comfortably on his couch. The older vampire’s handcrafted leather shoes caused him a momentary fit of lust, but he quickly overcame it and stepped out into his hallway.
“Mick, apparently my company is for you? Who would have thought?”
Mick leaned his head out of the elevator, “For me?”
“Yes and he wants you and Liz to come inside. Oh, and it wasn’t a request.”
Mick frowned and looked down at Liz. She smiled at him and stepped out of the elevator leaving him wondering if he would ever be able to predict her actions. She was so damn frustrating. Frowning he followed her then stepped between her and the door. “Stay behind us.” He murmured in her ear.
Liz shook her head and smiled. “He isn’t going to hurt us.” She laid a hand on his shoulder, smiled at Josef and slipped around them both leaving them no choice but to follow her.
She stopped just inside the door, her face alight with joy. She could feel this Vampire in a way she couldn’t Mick and Josef. He was old. Maybe the oldest of his kind, he was vicious, graceful and utterly amazing. She moved closer, slowly and curtsied. He chuckled, stood and caressed her hair.
“Such a lovely greeting, child, such manners and grace in a human even.” He took her hand and raised her to her feet leaning in close to inhale her scent. “But you are not truly a human are you, my dear.”
Liz could feel Josef and Mick standing at her back, she could sense there fear and confusion. “No, My Lord, I am not.”
“My Lord?” He asked casually, once again in the amused tone. “How is it you know what those standing behind you do not?” He stroked her cheek gently as he asked.
“I just do, My Lord.”
He smiled a true smile and let go of her hand. “Please, child, call me Hugh,” He looked at Josef and Mick, “but you two may call me sir.” He returned to his seat on the couch and gestured for Liz to sit with him. She hesitated then followed.
“This is all highly amusing but who the hell are you?” Josef was very unhappy. He was leaving miffed and well into pissed as hell, but he also knew there was no way he could take the vampire that had invaded his home. Even with Mick’s help.
Hugh looked at Mick, “I am Coraline’s father.”
“Her father?” Josef and Mick asked as one.
Hugh frowned, “Her sire if you prefer.”
“Yes, but that still doesn’t answer who you are.” Josef snapped.
“Josef.” Hugh chided. “I had forgotten how impetuous the young are.” He looked over at Liz, “My dear, would you mind filling my glass.”
“Not at all.” Liz looked at Mick and Josef, her eyes hard before looking back at Hugh with a mischievous smile covering her face. “How long would you like me to be in the other room eavesdropping?”
“Liz!” Mick sounded horrified, whereas Josef sounded proud.
Laughter spilled from Hugh’s lips, a dry deep laugh that he was obliviously unused to using. “You, my dear, are a treasure and if these two younglings ever are foolish enough to let you go, you are welcome in my house.” He patted her hand fondly. “I do adore a young woman with a sharp mind and a witty tongue. You may stay.”
He turned his gaze on Josef and Mick, “You may sit also.” He waited until they had taken seat on the opposite couch and continued. “I am the man history refers to as Hugh Capet. Coraline was one of many, and the last, that I have fathered over the ages. Always descendants. She broke faith with the convent by ‘siring’ you without consent, from myself and you.” Hugh frowned.
“What…” Mick hesitated.
“She lives, but is currently bound. Her punishment will last one hundred years. I am loathed to destroy her. She is, as a human would say, the baby of the family. Or was.” Hugh looked at Josef and Liz. “I see she did not hold your heart the way you hold hers. That is regrettable but no matter. I have seen what I need to see and there is another human approaching so my time here is at an end.” He stood, offered Liz his hand and helped her stand also. “My dear, it has been an unexpected pleasure.” He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it.
Hugh turned toward the balcony, paused and pulled a card from a gilded case then handed it to Liz. “Should you ever have need, call this number.” He then turned, walked through the balcony doors and leapt over the edge.
Liz ran to the balcony and looked over the side, not that she expected to see anyone but…she laughed and turned to face Mick and Josef. “That was history. In this room. He was the founder of the Capitan Dynasty, half of the royalty in Spain and France carry that man’s blood in their veins.”
Josef walked over to her, took the card from her hand and looked at it. He turned it over but the thick, heavy cream colored card reveled nothing but a single country code and a phone number. He handed it to Mick who glanced at it before handing back to Liz. Josef tuned to Mick, frowned again and walked back into his living room. He could hear Beth walking down the hall, and as odd as this had all been, they really did have pressing matters, such as why did Beth smell like death and terror, Liz’s powers and why Hugh had looked at both he and Liz when speaking of Mick’s heart being taken.
