Part 21
It was a week before Chirstmas and Sara was sitting in her room doing her homework. School three hours a day was so much better than having to go to normal school. Plus living with a teacher was really cool. Anytime she had a question, Liz was there to answer it.
Liz and Max were wonderful. Having them around made the pain of losing her family a little easier. Whenever she got depressed or she was just missing her parents, they would stop what they were doing and were there for her. To bad it couldn't last.
Sara was terrified what was going to happen when filming ended. Sure, Max and Liz assured her that their home was her home for the rest of her life, but she often wondered what would come of her after they didn't need her anymore. Or when they had a baby of their own.
A knock came from her door. "Come in."
"Hey sweetie." Liz entered with a tray of milk and cookies. "How's the homework coming?"
"I'm almost done." She closed her book. "Can I ask you something?"
Liz set the tray down and sat on the bed. "Of course."
"How come I gotta do homework and none of the other kids on the movie do?"
Liz smiled. "Because none of the other kids have a mother who's a teacher."
Sara bit her bottom lip. "But you're not really my mother. You're just a nice lady who takes care of me. At least that's what the other kids tell me."
Getting off the bed, Liz went to the intercom and called for Max to join her in Sara's room.
"What's up?" He asked when he came into the room.
"Sara needs her Christmas present early."
"Which one?" He laughed but stopped when he saw the seious expression on his wife's face.
"The one your dad brought over last night."
Max smiled. "I'll be right back." He was gone for about a minute and came back with a flat rectanular box with a red ribbon on it. He handed it to Liz and she gave it to Sara.
The little girl removed the ribbon and opened the box. She pulled out the folded papers in side and looked at them. "What are these?"
Liz got back on the bed. "These are adoption papers. We were going to wait until Christmas Eve to sign these, but I think nows a good time as any. I know we can't replace your mom and dad, but Max and I want you to be our daughter legally."
"Does that mean that after the movie's over, I really get to stay here forever, no matter what anybody says?"
Max joined them on the bed. "Yes, baby girl. Liz and I will be yours and you'll be ours. And nobody will be able to take you away from us."
Sara began to nod. "I want that. I want us to be a real family."
~~~
Christmas Eve, Sara Evans ran into the Parkers house excitedly. "You're really my grandpa now!" She said as she jumped into Jeff's arms.
"That I am little lady. I guess that means I get to spoil you rotten and your mommy and daddy can't say anything about it."
She giggled. "I like the sound of that."
"Like the sound of what?" Nancy asked.
"Grandpa Jeff says he's going to spoil me."
Nancy nodded. "That's right. It's a grandpa and grandma's right." She looked out the opened front door. "Where are Max and Liz?"
"Mommy and Daddy went to pick up Mr. and Mrs. Ev..., I mean my other grandpa and grandma from the airport. This is gonna get confusing if I call you the same thing." Sara thought hard. "I used to call my old mommy's parents Nanny and Poppy. Can I call you that?"
Nodding with tears in her eyes, Nancy kissed Sara's cheek. "We'd be honored if you called us that."
"Now I'm real again. I have a mommy and a daddy, and grandparents, and an aunt and uncle. The other kids on the set can't make fun of me anymore."
~~~
Christmas morning at the Evans Mansion was an event. Sara had presents of every shape and size. She got clothes, toys, books, a miniture Corvette that she could drive around the property from the Evans, and a horse from the Parkers.
Her life was perfect.
Then, Liz made an announcement. She was pregnant.
Sara's heart broke.

I'm sorry this is so short. I had planned on it being longer, but due to unforseen circumstances, I didn't have the energy to write. I just found out Friday, that my position at work is being eliminated. What a fun thing to go back to after maternity leave, huh. The really sucky part is that I have to finish out the semester.

Part 22
Part 22
With the announcement of Liz's pregnancy, the completion of the filming of the movie was fast tracked. By the first week of March, they finished and she was five months.
Sara sat on the porch swing on the deck, staring out at the pool. The closer the end of the filming came, the more time she spent by herself. She really loved Max and Liz and she wanted to love the baby, but she'd heard stories at the home where she was before the movie people found her about how the adopted kids were forgotten when a biological baby arrived. As much as her parents tried to assure her that she was a forever part of their family, she couldn't help how she felt.
"Hey kiddo." Max walked onto the deck from the path that lead to and from the golf course.
"Hi Daddy." She greeted with no emotion in her voice.
He sat next to her. "What's wrong, baby? You've been so sad lately."
She shrugged.
He picked her up and pulled her onto his lap. "Are you mad at me?"
She shook her head.
"Mom?"
"I'm not mad at anybody."
Max sighed. He hadn't broached the subject yet, but he knew he had to. "You're upset about the baby, aren't you?"
Sara didn't say a word. She simply dropped her head.
"Sara, sweetheart, how many times is it going to take for you to realize that no matter how many biological children we have, you are our daughter." He took a deep breath. "Bet you didn't know that I'm adopted, did you?"
The little girl look up at her father with wide eyes and shook her head.
"Well, I am. You see, my mother ... my birth mother, was the daughter of a friend of your grandparents. When I was three, we were in car accident and she was killed. She was only seventeen. Anyway, her father knew that there was no way that he could take care of me. His wife had died ten years earlier and he was a workaholic. My parents wanted children very badly but my mom was having trouble getting pregnant. When my birth mother's father told them the situation, Mom and Dad jumped at the opportunity to adopt me. Nine months later, my mom had Isabel." He looked into his daughter's eyes. "Do my parents love me any less because my mom carried Isabel?"
"No." Sara said softly. "But if you're adopted, how come Gramma tells me stories about when you were a baby?"
"Because she's known me since I was a baby. But I've only been hers since I was three."
Tears filled her eyes. "Do you remember your other momma?"
Max nodded. "I still remember the way she smelled. And I've got pictures and home movies. Her father's still alive and we talk a couple of times a year. But see, the Evans are my family. They are my mom and dad and Isabel, even though she's always been a huge pain in the butt, she's my sister and I love her."
Sara hugged him. "Can I still go with you and Momma when you find out if I'm having a little brother or sister?"
He kissed her on the top of her head. "Of course you can. We're a family."
~~~
Liz stood quietly just out of sight listening to Max and Sara's conversation. It was strange that she had forgotten the her husband was adopted, but she thanked God that Sara would know she would never be alone again and this time believe it.
She cleared her throat. "Mind if I join you?"
Sara jumped off of Max's lap and hugged Liz. "I love you, Momma."
Liz blinked back her tears. "I love you too, baby."
Then Sara kissed Liz's slightly rounded belly. "Hi little baby. I'm your big sister. I can't wait until you get here. We're gonna have so much fun and I'm gonna teach you everything!"
Liz smiled at her husband as the tears fell. "Thank you." She mouthed.
Max nodded and smiled.
"Excuse me?" Michelle, Liz and Max's new assistant interrupted. "The Guerin's just drove through the gate."
"Thank you Michelle." Max smiled.
~~~
When they entered the foyer, Michael and Maria were arguing.
"She's my daughter too! If I don't want her hanging around a recording studio all fucking day..." Michael halted his conversation with his wife when he saw Sara standing in front of him. "Hey Sarabell."
The little girl shook her head. "Aunt Maria's got that look. What'd you do?"
He looked shocked as his friends began laughing. "What look is that?"
"The same look my first momma gave my first daddy everytime he said something stupid."
Maria snickered.
"That's it!" He took the three month old out of Maria's arms. "Come on Tally. You and me are gonna raid the fridge."
"Freeze!" Liz ordered. "I haven't held my God daughter in a month. Hand her over!"
Remembering the hormone hell he went through with his wife, Michael handed over his daughter. "I'm still raiding the fridge. Come help me Sara."
After they were gone, Liz nuzzled the chubby baby. "You've grown so much Tallulah Beth. I can't believe how big she's gotten in just a month." She led her husband and best friend into the den.
"Yeah, well, have you noticed the size of these jugs?" Maria pointed to her breasts. "She sucks em dry every time she eats. She's a bottomless pit. Just like her daddy."
Max shook his head. "Okay, I'm getting visuals that I just don't want to have." They all sat. "What were the two of you arguing about?"
She sighed. "I got a job doing a voice for a feature and he doesn't want me taking her to the studio with me. He'd rather hire a stranger to watch her. Hello, I'm breast feeding."
"Can't you use one of those pump thingies?" Max asked innocently.
Maria got out of her chair, walked over to Max and pinched his nipple really hard and twisted it.
"Ouch!"
"That's what I said when I tried."
He rubbed his sore chest. "Sorry I asked."
Michael walked into the room with a very large sandwich in his hand and noticed Max's discomfort. "Pump?"
~~~
"You look adorable preggers, Lizzie." Maria told her as she nursed her baby.
Liz smiled. "I adore it."
"How are things with Sara."
She bit her lip. "I think she's finally realized that she's here to stay. She's going with us tomorrow morning for my sonagram."
"Has Max told her that he's adopted?"
"Right before you guys got here as a matter of fact. He really got through to her." Liz looked at the baby. "She's asleep?"
"Wanna bet?" Maria started to pull Tally from her breast. The little girl's big blue eyes opened and she grabbed her mother's breast and latched back onto the nipple. "See, just like her daddy."
Liz giggled. "It's so weird seeing you being such a ... mom."
"I know. Strange huh? What's even stranger is watching Michael with her. He's always been such a bad ass. I mean hell, that's what attracted me to him in the first place. But I've never seen him look sexier than when he's with Tally. He is so completely in love with her."
"Max is the same way with Sara. There's nothing he won't do for her. It's like she's always supposed to be ours. Like if the whole Tess thing had never happened..."
"Divine intervention. Told you we weren't alone in this universe."
~~~
Liz lay on the table having cold gel squirted onto her rounded belly.
The technician began running the wand in the goo. "Y'all wanna know the sex of the baby. Right?"
"Does that mean if it's a brother or a sister?" Sara asked. She was sitting on Max's knee beside the table.
Liz giggled. "Yes, baby."
"Then we want to know that." Sara told the man.
He sighed. "Okay, let's see what we got here." He pointed to the screen and pointed at the image. "There's the face."
Max smiled wide. "Sucking it's thumb already."
"Wanna brother or a sister?" The tech asked Sara.
"One or the other." She replied.
"Good thing. Congratulations Sara Evans. It's a..."

Part 23
Part 23
A very pregnant Liz waddled into the nursery and found Sara asleep on the floor by the cradle. "I found her." She motioned for Max to join her by the door.
He entered the room and squatted down to pick Sara up.
"I'm not done yet." She said softly.
"Doing what, honey?" Liz asked.
"Getting everything ready for my brother."
Max sat her up in his arms. "Sara, everything is ready."
She shook her head. "Nuh uh. It's not baby proof yet." She opened her hand and revealled three plastic plug covers.
Liz giggled. "Baby girl, we've got plenty of time before we have to worry about that."
"You sure?"
"Very sure." Max kissed her cheek. "You are going to be an incredible big sister. But even big sisters need their sleep ... in your bed not on his rug."
~~~
After putting Sara to bed, Max and Liz went into their bedroom.
"I don't know why we didn't look for her in the baby's room first. She's always in there." Liz sighed as she sat in the oversized chair by the window.
Max shrugged. "Brain overload. We've been so busy getting ready for the press to invade this weekend."
"Sara's really nervous. I reassured her that we'd be with her during the interviews, but you know how she gets. The nursery's become her safe haven." She winced and rubbed her very large, rounded belly.
"You okay?"
Liz nodded. "He's just been really active today." She sighed. "We really need to name him."
"I agree." He sat in the ottoman in front of her. "But we can't seem to come up with a name we both like. And before you say it again, I am not naming my son after me so that for the first five years of his life he can be called Little Maxie. It sounds like a femine product for a little person."
His wife busted out laughing. "I never thought of it that way. Okay, so no Little Maxies. Why don't we put a whole bunch of names in a hat and just draw?"
"Do you really want to leave the name of our son to chance?"
"Well, I never thought it would be this hard. When I was a little girl, I always said I was going to have a girl oddly enough named Sara and a boy named Matthew. But this isn't just my decis..."
"What's wrong with Matthew? I like it."
"Really?"
He nodded. "Why haven't you suggested it before?"
She bit her lip. "I didn't think you'd like it because Matt sounds like Max."
He leaned forward and kissed her. "Well, now you know." He caressed her belly. "Do you want to be named Matthew?" The baby kicked. I'll take that as a yes."
The press junket was taking place at the Evans estate so the place was hopping. Each person being interviewed had their own room except for the Max, Liz and Sara. They were set up in the room that Max and Liz used as their personal office. As the first entertainment show set up for thier segment, Sara was shaking.
Max squeezed her hand and winked at her. "We're in this as a family. If you don't know how to answer a question, just look to us."
She nodded.
"I have one question before we start." The reporter said. "What names are you ladies being billed as so I can say the right ones.
"Oh, I'm still worling as Elizabeth Parker." She looked at her daughter. "She's going by Sara Masterson-Evans."
"Great. Let's get started."
~~~
By the time the last reporter left the room, Sara was bouncing off of the walls. She was having so much fun talking about the movie, her old and new families and her new baby brother that her new mom would be having in a couple of weeks. Everyone who met her absolutely fell in love with her.
Liz on the other hand was feelin more and more uncomfortable. She had been feeling twinges about every half hour during the interviews, but now she was pretty sure what she was having was contractions and now they were ten minutes apart. Her face tensed as pain wrenched through her belly.
"Baby, what's wrong?" Max asked with concern in his voice.
She rubbed her belly. "I'm pretty sure I'm having contractions."

Part 24
Max paced Liz's hospital room. It had been five hours since Liz told him she was in labor and so far the baby was a no show.
"Max, please it down. You're making me dizzy."
He stopped and looked at his wife. "Sorry. I just wish this wasn't taking so long."
Liz giggled. "You and me both. I"ve been sitting at five centimeters for the last hour and a half and your son is playing a world cup soccer game in here."
He sat next to her. "I'm not being very much help, am I?"
"You're here. I couldn't ask for anything more."
A knock came from the door before it opened. "Care for some company?"
Liz smiled at the sight of her father. "Hi Dad."
"You're mother's getting Sara some ice cream in the cafeteria. How ya doin'?"
"I'm fine. Max on the other hand could use a tranquilizer."
Jeff laughed. "Yeah, I remember that feeling. Feel lucky that she hasn't started blaming you for everything ... yet. When Nancy was in labor with Lizzie, she blamed me for all of the pain she was in, global warming, and the bad economy."
"Surely Liz wouldn't do that."
"She might. Most women do. Probably because of all of the hormones."
Max shuddered. "Hormones. I really hate hormones."
Liz swatted his arm. "Could you two please stop talking like I'm not in the room. I swear, every time a woman gets pissed off, she's hormonal. Did you ever stop to think that the reason we get pissed has nothing to do with hormones and everything to do with the fact that men are the most assinine creatures on the face of the earth. A woman has every right to get pissed off during labor. Look at the facts. After about, oh say, thirty seconds, your parts over. I've been through morning sickness, lightheadedness, headaches, backaches, swollen ankles, breast that are far too large for my body ... but you benefit from that, don't you ... I haven't seen my feet in months, I'm constantly aroused, once again benefiting you..." Pain wracked through her body. "And now, you're son is trying to rip my insides out. God, I hate you! Go check on our daughter and tell my mother to get in here!"
Max was frozen until she hit his arm, hard.
"Are you even listening to me?"
He nodded. "I'll be back." He leaned down to kiss her.
"Don't even think about it."
He got up and slowly walked out of the room with his head down.
Once her was out of the room, Liz looked at her father. "Do you have anything to add?"
Jeff shook his head.
~~~
Five hours later, the contractions were getting closer and stronger. "Why the hell isn't Max in here?"
"Honey, every time he comes in here, you get irritated and kick him out." Nancy reminded her.
"I promise I'll be good this time. Just go get Max."
Before Nancy could get him, Max poked his head in the room. His eyes were wide and his complextion was pale. "Can I come in or am I still that 'damn sperm donor who just couldn't keep his dick in his pants'?"
Liz had tears in her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Max. I really don't mean anything I'm saying. I don't know why I'm saying it."
He took her hand and kissed it. "It's okay, baby. It's just your..."
"I swear to God if you say it's my hormones, I'll rip your dick off and feed it to you for breakfast!" Her hand flew to her mouth. "I didn't mean that."
Max nodded. "It's okay."
Liz felt a sudden woosh and then wetness. She grabbed the call button and pushed it.
"Yes, Mrs. Evans?"
"My water just broke."
Within seconds Liz's doctor was in the room and was checking her. "Now were getting somewhere. Water's broken and you're finally at ten." She turned to the nurse. "We're ready to go."
Liz looked at Max and then her mother. "Mom, get Sara."
"Are you sure?"
Both she and Max nodded.
"We want her with us when her brother is born." Max told her.
Nancy kissed her daughter on the top of her head. "I love you, baby girl."
"I love you too."
~~~
Max held Sara in his arms as they both looked down at Matthew Parker Evans who was sleeping in the clear plastic bassinet. Liz was in her bed sound asleep. During labor, she wanted absolutely no drugs. Now that her son was safe, she gladly accepted the pain medication they offered her.
"He looks like you, Daddy."
"Why do you say that?" He already knew the answer to his question.
Sara outlined Max's face with her fingers. "Mattie has your nose, and your chin, and just look at those ears." She shook her head. "There's no denyin' him."
He sharply looked at his daughter. "Where'd you here something like that?"
"That's what Michael told Ria."
Max shook his head. "Sweetie, do me a favor. Never repeat ANYTHING Michael says. He doesn't always think before he speaks and he often puts his foot in his mouth."
Sara nodded. "That's why Ria's always mad at him."
~~~
Liz sat in her room in a rocking chair, nursing her son. She'd sent everyone home to get some rest since they'd all been up all night waiting for the baby boy to be born. This was the first time she'd gotten to spend time alone with her baby and she was thankful for the time.
She sighed. "I'm so glad you're here. I'm gonna miss having you just to myself, but now that I get to hold you in my arms, it's so much better."
Max entered the room. "Hey."
"I thought I told you to go home and get some sleep."
He shrugged. "Couldn't. How's he doing?"
"He's a breast man like his daddy, that's for sure."
He chuckled. "As long as he's willing to share, that's fine with me."
Liz shook her head. "We really created this little person, didn't we?"
"Yeah. Kinda hard to believe, huh?"
She nodded. "I'm really sorry for every thing I said to you while I was in labor. You know I didn't mean ... most of it."
Max gave her a lopsided grin. "You're forgiven." He looked at his son. "He's asleep. Want me to take him?"
"Please. Do you know how to burp him?"
"Not a clue."
"Grab one of those cloth diapers and put it over your shoulder." She stood, still holding Matthew. "Trade places with me."
Max did as he was told.
Carefully, Liz placed the baby in Max's hands. "Gently place him on your shoulder and rub his back."
"I don't have to pat him?"
She shook her head. "He likes his back rubbed ... just like his daddy."
As Max held his son and rubbed Matthew's tiny back, tears slipped down his face.
"Are you okay?" Liz asked her husband.
He nodded. "This is the first time I've really held my son. It's just a little overwhelming."
Liz grabbed the camera that was beside her bed and started snapping pictures. In her heart she knew that she had lived her entire life to get to this exact moment.
Max paced Liz's hospital room. It had been five hours since Liz told him she was in labor and so far the baby was a no show.
"Max, please it down. You're making me dizzy."
He stopped and looked at his wife. "Sorry. I just wish this wasn't taking so long."
Liz giggled. "You and me both. I"ve been sitting at five centimeters for the last hour and a half and your son is playing a world cup soccer game in here."
He sat next to her. "I'm not being very much help, am I?"
"You're here. I couldn't ask for anything more."
A knock came from the door before it opened. "Care for some company?"
Liz smiled at the sight of her father. "Hi Dad."
"You're mother's getting Sara some ice cream in the cafeteria. How ya doin'?"
"I'm fine. Max on the other hand could use a tranquilizer."
Jeff laughed. "Yeah, I remember that feeling. Feel lucky that she hasn't started blaming you for everything ... yet. When Nancy was in labor with Lizzie, she blamed me for all of the pain she was in, global warming, and the bad economy."
"Surely Liz wouldn't do that."
"She might. Most women do. Probably because of all of the hormones."
Max shuddered. "Hormones. I really hate hormones."
Liz swatted his arm. "Could you two please stop talking like I'm not in the room. I swear, every time a woman gets pissed off, she's hormonal. Did you ever stop to think that the reason we get pissed has nothing to do with hormones and everything to do with the fact that men are the most assinine creatures on the face of the earth. Part 25
When "Forever Remembered" premiered, Liz couldn't get over how great the reviews were. Fan websites about her were popping up all over the Net dedicated solely about her. It was completely unreal for her.
So much had changed in the past couple of years. One of them came crawling into the room followed by his big sister.
"I'm gonna get you." Sara pretended to chase him.
Matthew giggled and crawled to Liz. He pulled himself up to try to crawl onto her lap. "Mama." His big brown eyes pleaded for her help.
"What's wrong, little man? Is Sissy chasing you?"
He giggled again. "Dissy." He pointed at Sara.
Sara flopped down on the couch next to Liz. "So is the Academy Award more important than a Golden Globe?"
Liz bit her lip. "I guess it depends on who you ask. The Oscar gets more recognition, but I say all of the awards are the same. It's public recognition for you work."
The fourth grader looked at the trophy shelf. All of Liz's childhood awards were there along with Liz's new Golden Globe. Max and Sara were both nominated but they were up against a period piece and the awards went to two European actors.
Max yawned as he trodded into the room. "Have they announced the nominees yet?"
"We've got about ten more minutes." Sara told him.
He looked at his daughter. "I can't believe you're even awake."
"Please. How many nine year olds do know that might be nominated for an Oscar?" She flipped her hair and then giggled. "Actually, the Matt Monster climbed out of his crib again, crawled into my room and started yelling 'Sissy at the top of his adorable little lungs an hour ago. May I please have a lock on my door?"
Max kissed her on the top of her head. "We'll see."
Sara sighed. "You do know that 'we'll see' is parent for no."
"Can't put anything past her." Liz nudged her daughter.
Ten minutes later, the nominations came on.
The perky female actress began with Best Supporting Actress. When Sara's name was announced, she jumped off the couch and began bouncing around the room. Then the handsome older actor read Best Supporting Actor. Max's name was the first read.
Sara started dancing and singing, "Daddy's got one too. Daddy's got one too."
The the man read Liz's name for Best Actress and the phone began to ring. For most of the morning all three of them were on the phone with friends, family and reporters.
The small shy girl that she once was, was now a media savy nine year old and handled the press with ease. Now that she was working on a new project, she was even known to call Entertainment Tonight and plug what was going on.
Her life was pretty cool.
"I'm sorry. Sara and I already have a designer for our dresses, but thank you for calling." Liz hung up on the twentieth designer. "Cynthia, unless my family or Harry Winston's calls, I'm not here."
"Yes ma'am." The young maid answered.
Max laughed. "Man, it's times like this I'm glad I'm a man. I made one call, had one fitting and bam, I'm ready."
"Yes, but nobody cares what you'll be wearing, Daddy. Me and mom on the other hand have to be glamourous."
"Mom and I." Liz, ever the teacher, corrected.
"Sorry. Mom and I have to be glamourous."
Max shook his head. "You better not be getting to Hollywood on us missy, or the movie you're working on now will be the last until you're eighteen."
Sara sighed. "I'm just kidding. I hate having to get all dressed up to have to sit there and then not win. It kinda sucks."
"Wrong word." Liz reminded her.
"Sorry. It stinks."
"Your mother wouldn't know." Max teased. "She has every film award there is."
Liz stuck her tongue out at her husband.
"Is that a good example to set in front of our children?" He quirked his eyebrow at her.
Sara giggled. She loved the way her parent played with each other.
"DISSY!" Matthew's voice bellowed throughout the house. "MAMA!"
Sara had a panicked look on her face and ran for the stairs. Max and Liz behind her.
When they got to the little boys room, Liz didn't know whether to be angry or to start laughing. Matthew was on the floor. His playpin was turn upside down and he was under it.
"When I said you could put him down for his nap, I meant to put him in the playpin, not under it." Liz told Sara as she swatted Max who was fighting laughter.
"I'm sorry. I'm just tired of him waking up and going into my room."
Max was laughing loudly as he lifted the playpin releasing it's prisoner. "Maybe a lock isn't such a bad idea."
"Thank you."
Part 26
Part 26
Liz supervised her daughter as she dressed for the award ceremony. They were staying in Max’s LA home and Sara’s room looked like a tornado had hit it. They wouldn’t be leaving for a few hours, but Sara insisted that she needed to get dressed before she got her hair and makeup done because she needed to get use to the feel of her dress and her real girl shoes. Defined as shoes that had two-inch strappy heels and not the average shiny kid heels.
Sara twirled. “How do I look?”
“Like an angel.” Liz smiled. She’d designed the dress for Sara. It was a pale pink, spaghetti strapped, silk and sequined dress that oozed innocence and Hollywood glamour.
“I’ll second that.” Max echoed from the doorway.
Liz turned to her husband’s voice to find him dressed in a pair of severely faded, ripped jeans, a black t-shirt, and barefooted. He looked incredibly sexy.
“Just came in to tell you two divas that your hair specialist and makeup artist are here. Pierre is a little freaked because I answered the door and he just wasn’t prepared for that.” Max fanned his face mocking the way the hairdresser reacted. “Where do you find these people?”
“Isabel.” Sara and Liz answered together.
“Nuff said. Anyway, the limo will be here in two hours. That should give you enough time to pour your body into that scrap of material you call a dress, over paint your face and kill the ozone layer. You know, as much shi … I mean stuff that we pack for Matty when we go somewhere for a week doesn’t take as long as two females getting ready for a few hours out on the town. I swear, the rest of the kids we have are all boys. Look how long it takes me to get ready. Ten minutes, tops. I put on my tux, socks, shoes, a little cologne, and comb my hair, and I’m done. Nope, nothing but boys from now on. Two females in this house is all I can handle.”
Diane Evans appeared at the door holding Matthew. “Max, your masseuse and manicurist are here. Where should they set up?”
Liz and Sara smirked at him.
“What?” He took his son from his mother and headed down stares. “Come on Matty. Let Daddy show you how a Hollywood star pampers himself in a manly way.”
All three females in the bedroom laughed loudly.
~~~
Sara waited for her parents to get out of the limousine before she exited. Suddenly everyone was calling out her name and cameras were clicking so loudly that the sound was deafening.
Liz took hold of her hand and squeezed. “This is your night, baby. Enjoy every second of it.”
She nodded, took a breath, and posed for the cameras.
After what seemed an eternity, they finally headed inside to take their seats and prepare for the evening.
~~~
Liz decided that a quick potty break was a very good. She didn’t want to be caught in the ladies room if or when her or Sara’s names were read.
Maria barreled into the lounge looking for her best friend. “There you are. You’re not gonna believe this. I’m pregnant. I swear, Michael must have super sperm. We’ve barely been in the same city at the same time for like months. One incredibly erotic weekend in Topeka of all places and boom! I’m knocked up. This is the last one! He comes near me and I whacking his little pecker off.”
Liz could hardly control her laughter. “That’s what you said the last time.”
Maria glared at her. “Shut up.” She took her lipstick out of her purse and began to apply it. “Nervous?”
She nodded.
Sara entered the lounge. She stood next to Maria a checked her hair and makeup.
“So grown up.” Maria winked at her in the mirror.
Liz sighed and grabbed both of their hands. “Let’s go get this shindig started.”
~~~
It seemed like forever before Sara’s category was called. She was up against some heavy hitters. Women that were twice her age and had been in the business much longer than she had. Still, she tried to breathe deeply and remain calm.
“And the Oscar goes to…” There was a pregnant pause while the presenter opened the envelope. “… Sara Evans for Yesterday!”
Nineteen-year-old Sara placed her hand over her pounding chest and then to her mouth. She stood and kissed her parents than made her way to the stage. She grasped the golden man that was handed to her and blew out a big breath. She’d prepared a speech just in case, but what she’d jotted down, seemed trivial. She decided to say what was in her heart. “I know I’m supposed to thank everyone who was involved with this film, but you know who you are and you know how I feel.” She bit her bottom lip. “This wasn’t supposed to be my life. I was supposed to grow up in the apartment above my family’s restaurant, work in the restaurant, graduate from high school and get married. It’s what my family had done for generations. When I lost my family, I thought it was over. I didn’t think I would ever be part of that kind of unit again. I thank God everyday that I looked so much like Elizabeth Parker as a child. Because of that, I got my mom and my dad, my brother and my five sisters.” She laughed. “So much for your all boy baseball team Daddy.” The audience laughed. “I want to thank my parent, Liz and Max, Mommy and Daddy, for keeping me normal. For making me save every dime I made and making me live off a very small weekly allowance. So small I sometimes had to borrow money from my friends. Try explaining to your friends who were making minimum wage that yes, I’d just made millions of dollars for a few months of work, but I’d already spent the fifty bucks I got for doing chores around the house. That didn’t always fly.” She looked down at the music conductor. She was already over her time, but he nodded for her to keep talking. Tears filled her eyes. “You’re the best thing that has happened to me. It’s because of you that if I don’t want to, I’ll never have to work again. It’s because of you, that I’m attending an Ivy League University. If it wasn’t for you, I don’t know who I’d be.” She stared directly at Max and Liz. “I’m me, because of you.”
~~~
The End
Thank you to everyone who has supported this story. It’s been an unusual ride and took a completely different direction from where it started out. I’m not sure if I’ll continue Sara’s story or not. Let me know if you think I should. I’m me because of you!
Maria glared at her. “Shut up.” She took her lipstick out of her purse and began to apply it. “Nervous?”
She nodded.
Sara entered the lounge. She stood next to Maria a checked her hair and makeup.
“So grown up.” Maria winked at her in the mirror.
Liz sighed and grabbed both of their hands. “Let’s go get this shindig started.”
It seemed like forever before Sara’s category was called. She was up against some heavy hitters. Women that were twice her age and had been in the business much longer than she had. Still, she tried to breathe deeply and remain calm.
“And the Oscar goes to…” There was a pregnant pause while the presenter opened the envelope. “… Sara Evans for Yesterday!”
Nineteen-year-old Sara placed her hand over her pounding chest and then to her mouth. She stood and kissed her parents than made her way to the stage. She grasped the golden man that was handed to her and blew out a big breath. She’d prepared a speech just in case, but what she’d jotted down, seemed trivial. She decided to say what was in her heart. “I know I’m supposed to thank everyone who was involved with this film, but you know who you are and you know how I feel.” She bit her bottom lip. “This wasn’t supposed to be my life. I was supposed to grow up in the apartment above my family’s restaurant, work in the restaurant, graduate from high school and get married. It’s what my family had done for generations. When I lost my family, I thought it was over. I didn’t think I would ever be part of that kind of unit again. I thank God everyday that I looked so much like Elizabeth Parker as a child. Because of that, I got my mom and my dad, my brother and my five sisters.” She laughed. “So much for your all boy baseball team Daddy.” The audience laughed. “I want to thank my parent, Liz and Max, Mommy and Daddy, for keeping me normal. For making me save every dime I made and making me live off a very small weekly allowance. So small I sometimes had to borrow money from my friends. Try explaining to your friends who were making minimum wage that yes, I’d just made millions of dollars for a few months of work, but I’d already spent the fifty bucks I got for doing chores around the house. That didn’t always fly.” She looked down at the music conductor. She was already over her time, but he nodded for her to keep talking. Tears filled her eyes. “You’re the best thing that has happened to me. It’s because of you that if I don’t want to, I’ll never have to work again. It’s because of you, that I’m attending an Ivy League University. If it wasn’t for you, I don’t know who I’d be.” She stared directly at Max and Liz. “I’m me, because of you.”
The End
Thank you to everyone who has supported this story. It’s been an unusual ride and took a completely different direction from where it started out. I’m not sure if I’ll continue Sara’s story or not. Let me know if you think I should. I’m me because of you!
