Hello everyone :lol: I'm finally back! The updates will most likely be weekly from now on. Thank you for all of the well wishes and support...it has meant the world to me :lol: On with the story...

CHAPTER 20

As Alex finally came to he tried several times to blink his eyes but nothing would come into focus. A sharp pain riveted through his head like a jackhammer and he could feel a warm liquid trickling down his face. Trying to stay calm, he attempted to remember something, anything before he’d been knocked unconscious. Nothing. He remembered nothing. He tried to move but both his arms and legs were bound together. He was trapped. Focusing on his other senses he tried to hear what was going on around him, but for the moment there was only silence. The pain continued to course through his head causing him to wince. That’s when he finally heard him.

“Who are you?” The deep, angry voice questioned.

Alex had never met Phillip Evans before but he was sure he was the person the voice belonged to. “Where am I?” He asked, afraid to really know.

“I asked you a question, boy…who are you? I saw you with my son and that bastard he runs around with, so now I want to know who the hell you are.”

“Sir, there’s been a mistake…I don’t even know your son.” Alex was starting to panic despite his best efforts to remain calm.

“Liar!” Phillip moved closer to the boy and gripped the back of his neck. “I saw you with him! What happened to me last night? I know you were there so don’t try to deny it.”

Alex was hurting…more than he ever had in his life, but he knew he couldn’t reveal what he knew about Max. Exposing Max or Michael could expose Isabel and that was a chance he would not take. “I don’t know anything.” He stated quietly and waited for the beating he was sure would come.

Phillip jerked him out of the chair he’d left him in and threw him as hard as he was physically capable of. He watched the kid hit the floor and listened as he screamed out in pain. “One way or another I’m going to get my answers…obviously you’ve chosen the hard way.” Phillip walked over to where Alex had landed and began to kick him repeatedly, hitting every part of his body at one point or another. The kid cried out several times, but never offered him the answers he was looking for. After several minutes of continually kicking and punching the boy, he realized he had stopped moving. He heard no more cries or pleas…just silence.

~~~~~~~
Liz slowly opened her eyes, immediately noticing the bright sun pouring in through the window. It was morning. She stretched her arms and thought back to the night before. Suddenly she felt the ache in her heart all over again. Her dreams with Max had been shattered once again, forcing her to wonder if they would ever be fortunate enough to create a life together. She knew they were young and had their whole lives ahead of them, but Liz was ready for her life to begin…now. She looked over and saw Maria and Isabel sleeping soundly on the other bed. They had held her last night until she’d fallen asleep, that much she remembered. Liz knew she had been cruel and didn’t deserve their kindness after everything she had said and done, but they had simply been her friends. Ashamed of herself, Liz rose from the bed. It was then that she finally noticed Max’s form resting against the wall. He’d slept on the floor to be near her. Liz bent down and gently brushed his cheek with the back of her hand, trying her best not to startle him. “Max.” She whispered.
Max felt Liz’s touch instantly, but kept his eyes closed, savoring her soft touch. He smiled and heard a quiet giggle come from Liz, which made him open his eyes. She looked like an angel. The sun was beaming in through the window like a spotlight on Liz making her even more breathtaking in his eyes. “Good morning, beautiful.” He said as a yawn escaped him.
Liz sat down on the floor next to him, wanting nothing more than to climb into his arms and never let go. “Hi.”
Max reached out and touched her face. He could still see the tear stains from the night before present on her cheeks. “You ok?”
Liz shook her head. “I think so…minor meltdown.” She said grinning.
“Understandable. You know…hormones and all.” Max teased.
Liz playfully hit his arm and then lowered herself to lie against him. “Any luck last night?”
The sweet moment was gone with the mention of the night before. Max didn’t like that his father was still roaming free and able to hurt the ones he loved. “No…nothing. We searched for a while but couldn’t find him. We’re gonna go back out today.” Although Max knew he didn’t wish this upon any of them, he still felt completely responsible. He wanted to find his father, but even then how would he explain what had happened?
“Max, why can’t we just leave? You said it yourself…I need to face my life in Roswell, so let’s just go.”
Max wanted to run off with Liz, but he was certain it had been his father that called the sheriff in Roswell. If they just left…he would find them. “Liz…you don’t know how much I wish we could just run away, but we can’t. My dad knows where you’re from…he’d find us. No, we have to end it here.”
“End it how, Max? Who does he have to hurt next?” Logic was no longer a factor in Liz’s mind. She wanted them all to leave…at least in Roswell she would be on familiar ground.
Max stroked her cheek gently and kissed the top of her head. “I won’t let him hurt anyone else, Liz…I promise.”
Liz trusted Max and knew he wouldn’t let anything happen to her if he had his way, but he was only one person and he couldn’t be everywhere with everyone all the time. “I’m scared, Max.”
“I know.” Max sat there quietly for a few minutes holding Liz close before a knock on the door brought him back to the moment. “Just a minute.” He called toward the door and then turned to Liz. “I want you to go wait in the bathroom. If anything happens to me call the police.” He whispered in Liz’s ear.
“But, Max…”
“No. Get Maria and Isabel and get in there. Isabel can protect you. I love you.”
Liz didn’t want to leave Max for a second but the look in his eyes told her he was serious. Quickly, she jumped up and went to Maria and Isabel. The knock had already stirred them so she just grabbed their arms and headed for the bathroom.
Once the girls were out of sight Max jerked the door open, his guard up, and ready to fight. Lucky for Michael, he didn’t overreact. “Dammit, Michael!”
Michael just shrugged his shoulders and strolled into the room. “What? All I did was knock.”
Max closed the door behind him and took a deep breath. “Never mind. Where’s Alex? Isn’t he with you?”
“No…isn’t he here with you?”
“Michael, I left him with you last night…what happened? Didn’t you guys stay down at my place?”
“I had to run over to my apartment for some things and I crashed, but I told him he could stay at your place.”
“Oh.” Max shook his head. “He’s probably still sleeping. Let me get the girls, and then we’ll run down and get him.” Max walked over and tapped lightly on the bathroom door so he wouldn’t scare anyone. “Coast is clear. It was just Michael.”
Extremely relieved, all three girls vacated the bathroom. Maria walked over and plopped down on the bed, Isabel took a seat at the small table in the room, and Liz went to Max’s side.
“Hi, Michael…glad to see you’re ok. Where’s Alex?” Liz asked.
“Michael said he crashed at my place. I’ll go get him in a few minutes.” Max kissed the top of her head again and smiled.
“He’s seriously not here?” Michael questioned, a little nervous.
“No. I haven’t seen him since I left you two last night to come be with Liz.” Fear was starting to grow in Max’s stomach.
Michael began pacing back and forth and then stopped in front of Max. “He ain’t down there, Maxwell. I went there first because I figured it would take the girls longer to get up…the place is empty.”
Everything hit Max at once and Liz could see it on his face. “Max? Where’s Alex?” Liz could tell something was wrong just by the glances Max and Michael were exchanging. “Max? Tell me…where’s Alex?”
A hundred different scenarios were running through Max’s mind and right now none of them seemed good. “I don’t know, Liz. He stayed at my place last night and now he’s gone. Let us go check it out and we’ll be right back.” Max didn’t wait for an answer but jumped into action immediately. He and Michael both took the steps three at a time, but getting there quicker wasn’t going to change the outcome. Max already knew Alex was gone. Somewhere deep down he not only knew Alex was gone but was positive his father had taken him.
“I told you…empty.” Michael declared after searching the apartment. “What are we gonna do, Maxwell?”
“I don’t know, Michael! Dammit! Why did you leave him alone?” Max demanded.
Michael hung his head, now realizing how stupid it had been to separate. “I’m sorry. I never thought…”
“It’s not your fault, Michael. I just…what now?” Feeling beaten, Max sat down.
Michael hated when Max was like this. Max was always the problem solver, but now he looked defeated when Michael needed him the most. He wasn’t good under pressure…that was Max’s job. “Well, where could he have taken him? I mean…it would have to be somewhere private, right?”
“Yeah.” Max was wracking his brain but nothing was coming to him. Just as he thought Liz, Maria, and Isabel were not far behind them. The three of them came stampeding into the apartment, terrified.
“Alex!” Maria screamed when she saw Max and Michael’s faces. “Oh my God! Alex!” She dropped to the floor and started crying. Michael rushed to her and held her while she cried.
“Not Alex. No. He isn’t gone. He just went for something to eat. He’s fine.” Liz babbled on, not wanting to even think about the possible truth. Max tried to comfort her but she slapped away his hands. “This is my fault. It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t run away…he wouldn’t have…it’s my fault.” Liz began to cry uncontrollably, finally falling into Max’s outstretched arms.
Isabel stood nearby watching everything unfold. It couldn’t be real. Alex couldn’t be gone. She stood there appearing to be emotionless while falling apart inside. Not my Alex.
~~~~~~~

Max ran toward the motel office hoping to find some shred of where his father might’ve taken Alex. He had to find Alex. He knew Liz was blaming herself, but this was his father…if something happened to Alex he knew he would never forgive himself.

“Hey, Max.” Came a bubbly, young voice as Max came in.

“Hey, Paige.” Max ran past her and into the back office with no explanations. He didn’t have time to explain anything. Right now he was focused on Alex and nothing else…or so he thought. He heard the bell above the door ring as someone walked in, but he paid no attention.

“Hi. Can I help you?” Paige asked in her normally cheerful voice.

“Yeah, maybe you can. My girlfriend is staying here and I’ve come to pick her up.”

“Ok. What’s the name?”

“Parker. Elizabeth Parker.”

Max heard Liz’s name and knew who it was. He wasn’t thrilled about having to meet Kyle on a good day, so now just wasn’t the time. He stood up from his crouched position and went into the main office. His first impression of Kyle wasn’t exactly bad, but it wasn’t good either. Kyle was good looking enough but way too cocky for his own good. “Can I help you?”

“I think the young lady here has it under control.” Kyle said sweetly and winked at Paige causing her to blush.

“Well, it’s generally not our policy to give out guest information.” Max spoke through gritted teeth trying to maintain some composure.

“Well…I can understand that, but these are special circumstances.”

“Really? Like what?” Max was losing his cool. He could feel it.

“Like I’m pretty sure that’s none of your damn business.” Kyle responded, irritated. “Just who the hell do you think you are?”

“Actually, I’m Max Evans…as in the Evans Motel.” Max stated.

“Well then, Mr. Evans…I’d like to pick up my girlfriend and go home.”

“Sorry, but there isn’t an Elizabeth Parker staying here.” Max figured he might as well keep their story going, especially if it kept Kyle Valenti away from Liz.

“But, Boss…” Paige started as she held the room card in her hand.

“Paige, could you please excuse us?” Max grinned and then nodded toward the door. “Take a break.”

“Yes, sir.” Paige mumbled and headed out the door.

“Look,” Kyle started. He was growing angrier with each passing second. He knew Liz was here. “I know she’s here so why don’t you just tell me where she is. This is really a family matter.”

“You’re right…it is. As I said there is no Elizabeth Parker staying here. Currently we only have one guest named Elizabeth, but her last name is Evans. She’s my wife.”

~~~~~~~
Maria and Liz sat huddled together, both exhausted from crying, but instead of crying Isabel’s mind was thinking. So much had happened these last few days and while she normally wouldn’t be so giving of information, this time it could save Alex’s life. “I have an idea.” She said simply but it was enough to gain Liz and Maria’s attention.
“What?” Liz asked, sniffling.
Isabel sat forward and tried to figure out the easiest way to explain this to them. “I know you’ve seen some things in the last few days and I’m sure it’s been kind of scary…but you know me. You’ve known me most of our lives. Things are different now…you know I’m different…what I need to know is if you’re willing to trust me?”
“Trust you? With what?” Maria queried.
Isabel looked at their faces and for a brief second saw hope. It was all she needed. “I would never do anything to hurt any of you, so even if it seems like too much please know I just want Alex back.”
“Could you just spit it out, Isabel!” Maria demanded.
“Ok…I have gifts…abilities that may help us find Alex.” She paused for a minute to see if they had any questions and then continued. “One of my abilities is…dreamwalking.”
“Dreamwalking?” Liz asked, confused yet intrigued.
“If I concentrate I can go into people’s dreams. It will only work if he’s unconscious,” Isabel watched both Liz and Maria flinch, “but it’s worth a try…don’t you think?”
“So…you can only…well get in if he’s dreaming…or unconscious?” Liz didn’t want to think for a moment that Alex could be hurt, but since they were fairly sure Phillip Evans had taken him, it was a possibility.
“Yes…he would have to be asleep or unconscious.” Isabel said barely above a whisper.
Maria started shaking her head. “No. It’s already daytime so he’d be awake and how do we know this voodoo you claim to be able to do won’t hurt him? No! Leave him alone! He has to be ok…he has to be. He’s awake and he’s fine. He’ll be back soon.” Maria curled her legs up to meet her chest. This had to be a bad dream…one she was sure she would wake up from any second.
Michael heard Maria’s raised voice and came back inside. He’d been outside watching the beach, praying that Alex might come back on his own. Unfortunately, he knew that was not the case. “What’s going on?”
“She wants to do something to Alex…you can’t let her! Tell her to leave him alone!” Maria was near hysteria.
“Do what? What can you do?” Michael was curious. He hadn’t even thought about what Isabel’s abilities might be. Max had some that were unique to him…maybe, just maybe Isabel could find Alex.
“Maria.” Liz walked over and put her arm around Maria’s shoulder. “If she can help Alex…don’t you want her to try? I know this is all really strange, but I’ve seen some of the things Max can do,” Liz looked to Isabel reassuringly, “and I don’t think Isabel would do anything to hurt Alex. Maria…it might be our only chance.”
“You honesty think this could work?” Maria asked Liz.
Liz shook her head and smiled slightly. “Yes, I do.”
“Could someone please tell me what the hell is going on?” Michael demanded.
“Action now…explanations later.” Isabel directed toward Michael. “Ok, I need to concentrate so you have to be quiet.” She said to everyone and received a nod from each of them. “Ok…come on, Alex…this has to work.” She whispered.
Look at me actually keeping to a schedule :wink: Hopoefully this trend will continue, but due to a family emergency I have my doubts :cry: I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying everything will be ok, so hopefully I will be back next Tuesday with the next chapter. I hope you enjoy...
CHAPTER 21
“Excuse me?” Although Jim Valenti had told his son that Liz was now married, Kyle hadn’t believed it for a minute. After all, she’d only been gone a week.
Max smiled smugly, wanting nothing more than to strangle Kyle Valenti for what he’d put Liz through. “I think you heard me. I’m Liz’s husband, Max Evans, and I’m assuming that would make you Kyle Valenti.”
Kyle stood there in shock. It can’t be true. “Look, I don’t know who the hell you are, but I know my Lizzie and she wouldn’t have just run off and married a stranger…it’s just not her.”
“Yes, it was rather impulsive of us, but when you’re in love you do crazy things.” Max continued to smile, enjoying the fact that he was obviously getting under Kyle’s skin.
“Well, I don’t know what you convinced her to do, but she belongs with me. She’s carrying my…”
“Child.” Max interrupted with a grin even as his blood began to boil. “Yes, I know. We’re really excited about the child we plan to raise together. I know why you’ve come here, Kyle, but you might as well go home. Liz’s place is with me now.”
“The hell it is! That’s my child, and Liz is my girlfriend!” Kyle could feel his adrenaline pumping and knew he was only seconds away from punching Max Evans.
Was. Liz was yours, but things change. You had no clue what you had and now it’s gone. Why don’t you be a stand up guy for once and leave?” Max’s fury was starting to show despite his best efforts to remain calm. He didn’t have time for this right now. He needed to concentrate on finding Alex, but he wasn’t about to let Kyle anywhere near Liz…she’d been though enough. “Now, if you’ll excuse me…I have more important matters to deal with.” Max started to leave the office, but Kyle grabbed his arm and swung before Max could defend himself. He hit the floor hard, but Kyle hadn’t really hurt him. Instead, he’d only justified anything Max would do to him.
~~~~~~~

Isabel tried to concentrate, but the constant whispers from Maria only a few feet away about what was happening were too distracting. “Maria…please.” Isabel sighed in frustration. “I’m trying to concentrate but you’re making it impossible.”

“Well, I’m sorry…I don’t exactly understand all of this and I’m scared…sue me!” Maria exploded.

Isabel stood up and went to Maria’s side and knelt down. “Maria, I know you’re scared. I’m scared too, but every second we waste Alex could be in more danger. I understand that all of this is new to you, but I promise I would never do anything to hurt Alex…I promise.” Isabel held a hand on each side of Maria’s face and waited for a sign of understanding.

“Ok,” Maria said quietly and gulped, “just please help him, Isabel.”

“I will.” Isabel stepped away from Maria and walked back to her seat. She had to be calm for this to work. She’d taken a picture of Alex from Maria’s wallet and was concentrating on nothing but Alex now. She would get through…she had to.

Isabel found herself in a dark room. There were very few windows and they were almost as high as the ceiling itself. There was almost total darkness around her and she could hear a faint sound of water dripping. Beginning to panic, she looked around further. When she finally saw Alex it took everything in her not to scream. He was lying on the floor…he looked broken. She ran to him and started to shake him gently. “Alex? Oh my god. Please, Alex…say something.” Isabel felt the tears start flowing. He wasn’t moving at all. “Alex, I need you…please don’t leave me. I need you.” Finally, he stirred.

“Isabel? How? Where?” Alex tried to speak, but it hurt to talk.

“I’m here, Alex. I won’t leave you.” She held his head in her arms and continued to cry. His injuries were extensive, that much she could see. “Alex?” He seemed to have drifted off again, but Isabel knew she had to get him to talk. She didn’t know how much time they had, and she couldn’t let this be for nothing. “Alex, you have to wake up. Look at me. Alex!”

“It hurts, Isabel. I’m dying, right? That’s why you’re here…I’m dreaming.” He whispered.

“No, Alex! You’re not dying. I’m here. I’m really here,” She lied. Isabel had to make him keep going no matter what it took. “Alex, where are we? Do you know?”

“It hurts.”

As Alex coughed, Isabel saw a small amount of blood drip from his lips. “No, Alex…stay with me. Where are we? Where’s Phillip Evans? Did he leave?” Isabel pushed on.

Alex shook his head slightly. “No…he’s still here…you have to leave…he’ll hurt you.”

Isabel realized this was going nowhere. Alex didn’t know where he was and he was barely conscious. She looked around the room and tried to make mental notes of everything she was able to see. Hopefully Max knew enough about his father that a simple explanation of the building would be enough. “Alex…I have to get help, but I’ll be back. Hang in there, Alex. We’ll help you.” Isabel bent down and brushed her lips against his. “I love you, Alex. Please hang on.”

And the connection was gone. Isabel sat there, terrified and crying. “Oh my god, Alex!” Isabel screamed when his image faded away.

Michael held Maria and Liz back and ran to Isabel’s side. “What happened? Did you get through? Where is he?”

“I don’t know. He could barely speak…he’s hurt…he’s hurt so badly. We have to help him!” Isabel was now the one crying uncontrollably, while the others watched in shock.

“Shh.” Michael held her close and patted her back gently. “Isabel, we’ll get to him, don’t worry.” He pulled back and wiped away her tears. “Isabel, I need you to tell me everything you saw. How does this work? Could you only talk to him or could you see where he was?”

Isabel took a deep breath, knowing she had to go on. Alex needed her. This was no time to break down. “I talked to him, but yes…I could see everything around him. It was dark, but there was some light coming in from some windows up near the ceiling.”

“What else did you see?” Michael prodded.

“It looked like an old warehouse,” she glanced over at Maria and Liz, “kind of like the old soap factory.”

“Soap factory?” Michael questioned.

“It’s closed but kids still throw parties there all the time.” Liz stated calmly, almost completely numb by their current situation.

“It was just like it.” Isabel confirmed. “It was dark and I could hear water dripping in the distance. There were stairs and a hallway, but Alex was on the bottom floor. He was just…lying there. Michael, Phillip really hurt him…we have to get there before he kills him.” She wasn’t trying to scare Liz and Maria but she didn’t have the luxury of sparing them the truth right now.

“Ok…I’ll get Max. Maybe he’ll know where this place is. I’ll hurry back.” Michael leapt into motion and was out the door. Michael had always been the cynical one, but as he headed toward the office Michael found himself praying that Alex was ok.

“What do we do now?” Maria asked through new tears after Michael had disappeared through the front door.

“We wait…and we pray.” Liz replied.

~~~~~~~
Max was in motion instantly. He jumped up and swung at Kyle hitting him hard in the jaw, and sending him flying backwards. “You son of a bitch!”
Kyle was back on his feet quickly and attempting to hit Max again, but now Max was ready. “I’m taking her home with me, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me!”
“Wanna bet? You’re not taking Liz anywhere! She stays with me and you can go to hell!” Max bellowed as he shoved Kyle back again, but unfortunately he just kept coming.
Kyle maneuvered just out of Max’s grasp. “Liz and my child are going home with me and that’s final.” Kyle said wiping blood away from his jaw. “Now where is she? I have a right to see her.”
Furious, Max stood his ground. “Rights? How dare you talk to me about rights. You cheated on her, you betrayed her, and she left. I’ve been here for her…picking up the pieces you left. You have no idea what she’s been through. If she sees you now she could lose the baby…is that what you want?”
When he heard the word baby, Kyle put down his fists and slowly backed away from Max. “Why? What’s wrong? Are Liz and the baby ok?”
Although he wanted to deny it, Max could hear genuine concern in Kyle’s voice. “For now…no thanks to you. She’s been through too much too soon…she can’t take any more stress. Don’t you see…that’s what you are?” Max was hoping and praying that he could appeal to Kyle’s compassion…if he had any.
The guilt washed over Kyle forcing him to realize exactly what he had put Liz through. He’d been so consumed with finding Liz, he hadn’t considered her state of mind. “Please? Is she ok?”
Max wanted Kyle Valenti as far away from Opal Cliff as he could possibly be, but it wasn’t his choice…it was Liz’s. He wanted to believe Kyle had no rights over Liz and the baby…but he did. Reluctantly, he lowered his fists in defeat. He would fight to keep Liz if he had to, but he had no right to deny her the choice. “She’s ok…for now. There were some minor complications from all the stress, but other than that…they’re both fine.” Max looked up now and met Kyle Valenti’s eyes. They weren’t at all what he had expected. He’d expected to see cold, dark eyes with no emotion, but instead he saw a scared kid. “I don’t know you and I don’t know what your intentions are, but I can tell you Liz is extremely fragile…she can’t handle anymore stress right now. I’m asking…no begging you to give me some time. I won’t leave here with her, but I need time to make sure she’s ok before you see her. Can you give me that much?”
Kyle stood there before Max Evans and listened openly to his request, his father’s words ringing in his ears. I’m on my grandchild’s side. After everything he’d put Liz through, this was the least he could do. “Ok. I’ll give you the time you need to make sure Liz and the baby are ok, but I’m not leaving. Whether you are in fact her husband or not…I really don’t know, but Liz and I have unfinished business we need to resolve. Now…can I get a room? I’ve been traveling all night.”
“Fine.” Max realized he had no choice and he was wasting valuable time he didn’t have to spare. “I’ll put you on the north side of the hotel. As you can see, we’re not very big and I need to keep you out of Liz’s sight…for the moment at least. Agreed?”
“Agreed.” Kyle nodded and took the key Max held out. “I know you think I’m here to cause more trouble, but I’m not. I’ve been a jerk…I know that, but I can’t just leave things the way they are.” Kyle took one last look at Max and left the office, slamming into Michael in the process. “Excuse me.”
Michael came running through the door faster than he should’ve and plowed right over Kyle Valenti, but wasted no time with apologies. He needed to get to Max quickly and to hell with anyone who got in his way. “Maxwell!” He said winded and almost completely out of breath. “Think we got something! You gotta come now!”
Max followed Michael back toward his apartment and listened intently to Michael as he relayed the information about Isabel’s gift and what she had seen. Everything sounded familiar, but Max couldn’t place his exact memory.
“Come on, Maxwell…you’re our only hope. Isabel said Alex was really out of it and was hurt pretty badly. Does the place ring a bell?”
“It does…I just can’t remember. He took me there years ago…I know I’ve been there, but I was still young.” Max ran the images flashing in his mind over and over again, but he kept hitting a brick wall. When Max walked into the small apartment he saw three desperate pairs of eyes concentrated on him. They all expected this to mean something to him…the last thing he ever wanted was to disappoint them and put Alex in danger.
“Max.” Liz jumped up off the couch and ran to him, burying her face in his chest. “He’s hurt, Max…we have to find him.” Immediately she was crying again, but it came as no surprise to the others around her. They were all on edge.
“It’s gonna be ok.” Max assured her, even though he wasn’t sure himself. Max kept his arms around Liz and walked her back into the living room where the other two girls looked hopefully up at him. “You ok?” He asked them as he sat down, but knew it was a stupid question. “Isabel, tell me everything you can remember…try to leave nothing out.”
“I don’t know what to say. It was dark…damp…I could see a set of stairs and some windows up high on the wall near the ceiling...that’s about it. In the distance it sounded like I could hear the ocean, but that might have been this place…not where he was.” Isabel looked down and noticed her hands were trembling.
“The ocean? Are you sure?” Max asked, finally feeling like they were getting somewhere.
“I told you, Max…that could’ve been here.”
“No.” Max smiled and looked around. “I don’t think it was. My dad, he owns a warehouse near the ocean. It’s just off the pier about a mile from here. Michael, don’t you remember? We got in trouble for playing in there when we were kids…my mom caught us and said it was a dangerous place for two little boys to play.”
“Yeah…I remember. We used to…practice there.” Michael grinned when Maria’s questioning eyes settled on him. “Max, do you think he’s there?”
“Makes sense. It’s close and it’s secluded. We don’t have time to sit around second guessing it…let’s go.” Max stood up and kissed Liz on the forehead. “We’ll be back as soon as we can. You’re safe here with Isabel. Don’t worry…we’ll bring him back.”
“Be careful.” Liz whispered.
Michael walked over impulsively and kissed Maria on the top of her head. “Don’t worry, Deluca…he’ll be ok.” Surprised by his own actions, Michael blushed.
Once outside Michael looked at the grin on Max’s face. “What?”
“You like her…you really like her.” Max teased.
“Do not.” Michael responded defensively.
“Ok.”
Their walk to the pier was swift, each of them taking long strides to get there quicker. Neither of them had a plan, and neither of them asked the other for any ideas. They were running on pure adrenaline now, and God help Phillip Evans if Alex wasn’t alive.
They reached the warehouse in very little time and followed a small path around to the back. The memories of their childhood games washed over them and the layout came back to them both. They exchanged glances in understanding…he was here.
“What now, Maxwell?” Michael was the first to break their silence. Asking the one question Max didn’t know how to answer.
“I don’t know…I was kinda hoping it would come to me by the time we got here…but I don’t have a clue. We can both defend ourselves, but in doing so we risk exposing ourselves to my father.” Max saw the look of uncertainty flash on Michael’s face. “Michael…we don’t have a choice…it’s now or never.”
“I know, Maxwell. Whatever happens…I got your back.”
“Then we just get in, get Alex, and get out…got it? No showing off…we can make my father pay later. For now we just need to get Alex the hell out of here.”
“Got it. Ok…after you.” Michael was scared, probably for the first time in his life, but Max was right…it was now or never. “Be careful.” He muttered under his breath as Max entered through the back door and he followed.
The place hadn’t changed much through the years. It was old and rundown, but still the same. Max stayed close to the wall as he made his way around the room. They’d entered through the back, but the lower floor was just one large room. Finally, Max spotted Alex. It was dark so he wasn’t able to see him clearly, but he was sure it was him. Alex was coughing, which caused Max to breathe a small sigh of relief…he was still alive.
Max saw no sign of his father so he continued forward. He approached Alex slowly, hoping he wouldn’t frighten him. Even in the darkness that surrounded them, Max could see the dried blood matted in Alex’s normally brown hair. His eyes were swollen and his lip was still bleeding, telling Max that his father was still around. Max bent down slowly and lifted Alex’s head. In the corner of his eye he saw Michael watching the room and occasionally sending glances in his direction.
“Alex? Alex, can you hear me? It’s Max.” Alex moved slightly, but only enough to open his eyes. “Don’t make any noise…we’re gonna get you out of here.” Max turned and motioned for Michael to join him. Once Michael was at his side, Max gestured to the cuts and bruises that covered Alex’s body. “He’s hurt too badly…I don’t think he can make it out of here on his own.”
“So what do we do?”
“Not we…me. I’m going to have to heal his injuries.”
“Maxwell.”
“Michael, he already knows about us, so what do we have to lose? We can’t make it out of here without being noticed if we have to carry him.”
“Ok…you know what you’re doing.” Michael nodded in agreement for Max to proceed.
Max held his hands directly above Alex’s limp body, and winced when he realized how extensive his injuries really were. Silently, he cursed his father for the pain he’d inflicted on an innocent person. For years he’d made excuses for his father’s behavior, but no more…he’d finally crossed the line. Luckily it didn’t take long for him to heal Alex enough for him to move on his own. Alex looked up and met Max’s eyes, but all Max saw was gratitude where he’s expected to see hatred. “You’re gonna be ok now…can you move?”
“I think so.” Alex whispered, still in pain from the remaining injuries.
“Come on, Maxwell…we gotta get outta here.” Michael demanded. “Can he move on his own?”
“Yeah.” Max placed an arm under Alex to support his weight and allow him to get to his feet. “You ready?” He asked Alex.
“You kidding? What took you so long?” Alex smiled through the pain and winked at Max.
Max shrugged. “You know women…takes them forever to get ready.”
Michael checked the room, and seeing there was still no sign of Phillip Evans, decided it was time to move. “Ok, let’s go.”
The three of them made it around the large room and were almost to the exit before Phillip Evans showed his face.
“Hello, son…going somewhere?”
Max had hoped to make it out without any incidents, but that was obviously no longer an option. “Let him go, Dad. I’ll stay, but let both of them go.”
“I’m not leaving without you, Maxwell.” Michael stated forcefully.
Max ignored Michael and continued to reason with his father. “Please? This is between us…let them go. They have nothing to do with this.”
“What makes you think I’d let any of you go?” Phillip slurred through a drunken fog.
Realizing his father was drunk gave Max the upper hand. He slid Alex toward Michael and stood in front of the other boys. If his father wanted a target…he had one. “Fine. You want me? I’m right here!”
“You’ve gotten awfully cocky, son…not very wise.”
“Quite the contrary, actually. I’ve let you bully me around for years and I’ve made excuses for you, but no more. What the hell happened to you? I can remember what kind of father you used to be, but what kind of man uses his son as a punching bag?” Max was intentionally trying to gain all of Phillip’s attention so Michael and Alex could make it out safely, but Michael wasn’t moving. “You crossed the line this time, Dad. You hurt a defenseless kid you didn’t even know…and for what? To get back at me? Well, here I am. You can finally finish the job you started years ago.”
“Shut up!” Phillip yelled as he heard Max’s voice echoing through his head.
Seeing that he was accomplishing his goal, Max went on. “What’s the matter, Dad? Is it that I’m expecting it this time? What? You can’t hit someone who’s expecting it?”
“I said shut up!” Phillip yelled again.
“No.” Max stated calmly, lowering his fists.
“You’re leaving me with no choice, Max!” Phillip bellowed.
“So go ahead…hit me. Hit me, you coward!”
Phillip reached into his pocket and grabbed the gun he’d retrieved from his safety deposit box the night before. “You asked for this.” Phillip pulled the trigger out of anger before he knew what he was doing.
“Maxwell!”
It's Tuesday :D Well, here's my next chapter...it's somewhat of a transitional chapter, but a very important one in the long run. Thank you ALL for your support and well wishes...it means the world to me :) I hope you enjoy...
CHAPTER 22
“No!” Max heard the scream, but had no idea it had come from his own mouth. He watched the bullet as it discharged from the firearm in his father’s hand, but the seconds seem to be passing by in slow motion. Instinctively he held up his hand, knowing there was no way to stop the bullet, but not being able to bear the sight of it racing forward. Suddenly, a green, glowing shield appeared before him, covering him, Michael, and Alex. For one brief moment he stood there, shocked and yet relieved that their lives would be spared today. It was then he realized the bullet would have to go somewhere. Just as the thought crossed his mind, he saw the bullet ricochet off the glowing shield and propel quickly back into his father’s chest. He had saved his life and the lives of his friends, but now his father lay bleeding and dying on the floor. He rushed to his father’s side without a moment’s hesitation. Despite everything Phillip Evans had done to Max and many innocent others…he was still his father. “Dad?”
Phillip gasped for air and coughed up blood, but made no effort to move. “Max.” He whispered as the realization of his fate became blindingly obvious. He was going to die, but worse…he knew he deserved to die. “Oh, Max.”
“Dad! No, stay with me!” Even after everything, watching his father dying before him was too much for Max to handle. He held his hand over the bullet wound in his father’s chest, but Phillip’s hands stopped him.
“No, son...no.”
“But I can…”
A look of understanding washed over Phillip’s face and he smiled. “I know you can…but don’t.”
“What? How? How do you know?” Max questioned in disbelief.
Phillip coughed again, and winced in pain. “I’ve always known you were special…I just never knew how special…until now.”
“Then let me help you.” Max demanded, but Phillip shook his head in disapproval.
“I can’t…let you…do that.” His words were becoming more sporadic, and the color in his face had almost completely drained away. “I’m so sorry…I know…I’ve done…so many things…wrong…I wish…I could…make them…right…but there’s…no time.” Phillip coughed again, spewing blood from his open mouth. “I love you…Max…but let me go…I want…to go…at least now…I can be…with your mom…without her…I died years ago…please…try to remember…who I was…then…” Slowly his eyelids closed and his chest stopped rising.
“Dad?” Max whispered, tears streaming down both sides of his face. “Dad?” He tried again, but it was too late…his father was gone. So many emotions rushed through his mind that it made him physically sick. While he was throwing, he felt a hand rest gently on his shoulder, and as he looked up, he saw Michael. There were no words for their feelings at the moment and each of them realized that. Loss, sorrow, regret, relief…there were simply too many to even try to attempt to verbalize them.
“Let’s go home, Maxwell.” Michael said quietly.
“But my father…”
“I’ll help you deal with this later…for now we need to go home.” Michael only had one thing on his mind and that was removing Max from this situation. Max had done what he had to do to protect them, but at what cost? The longer he sat there, agonizing over his father’s dead body, the more he would suffer in the end. “I promise, Maxwell, I’ll help you later, but Alex doesn’t look so good and neither do you.”
Max turned his head to glance at Alex. The boy was extremely pale and looked exhausted. He didn’t want to leave his father lying here, but there were decisions to be made and he was far from thinking clearly. Without a word he rose to his feet and followed Michael and Alex out of the old warehouse.
~~~~~~~

“Do you think they’ve found him yet?” Maria asked, breaking another long silence.

Isabel shook her head and continued to watch Liz closely. She’d been sitting there silent, almost comatose since the guys had left. In her fragile condition, Isabel worried that the stress wasn’t good for her or the baby, but she didn’t know what to do. Max was the healer if something went wrong, but right now Liz needed a friend. “Liz? Do you want anything? A drink? Something to eat?”

Liz shook her head and kept looking out the window. She felt so guilty for what she’d put her family and friends through. She had thought leaving was the best option at the time, but if she’d stayed home Alex would be fine right now. Her life would be total chaos, but her friends would be safe and her parents wouldn’t be worried. “What will we tell them?”

“What, Liz? Tell who, honey?” Concerned, Maria walked over and sat down next to Liz.

“The Whitmans. What will we tell them if something happens and Alex isn’t ok?”

“Liz, you can’t even think that. Alex is gonna be fine…I know it. They’ll get to him in time, and he’ll be safe. We’ll all go home together.” Maria assured her.

“I’m so sorry, Maria…if I hadn’t…”

“Liz, stop it. We all understand why you left…it wasn’t your fault. Everything that has happened since is just…well it just doesn’t matter. We’ll all be ok…promise.” Maria laid a hand on Liz’s head and stroked her hair away from her face. As children, whenever Liz was upset this was the only thing that would calm her down and now it seemed to be working. Liz leaned against Maria and closed her eyes.

Isabel nodded in approval when Maria glanced her way. She knew exactly how hard this was on Maria and yet she was still willing to take care of Liz and help see her through it. Isabel couldn’t help but feel a slight pang of jealousy. She’d never had friends like this, but hoped that one day they would feel this comfortable with her. The last few days had flown by in a blur, but as Isabel thought back she realized they’d been the best of her life. Yes, things had gone terribly wrong, but for the first time in her life people knew who she really was. Isabel had never expected that to feel so good.

“Psst.”

Isabel came out of her daze and looked over at Maria. Liz had fallen asleep in Maria’s arms and was snoring softly. “I’m glad she’s resting…I was starting to worry.” Isabel whispered, not wanting to disturb Liz.

Maria motioned to Isabel with her free hand to come over. “Help.” She mouthed as Isabel looked at her in confusion.

Isabel walked over to them and smiled when she realized Liz had Maria completely pinned down. “Problems?”

“What do you think?”

Between the two of them they were able to transfer Liz to the couch. Isabel grabbed a blanket to cover Liz up, and Maria put a pillow under her head.

“Hopefully she’ll rest at least until the guys come back.”

“Isabel?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you think Alex is ok?” Maria had held herself together for this long, but she could feel the edge slipping. She needed Liz and Alex like she needed air to breathe.

Isabel smiled. “I know he’s all right.”

“How do you know?” Maria prodded.

Again, Isabel smiled. “Because my heart isn’t broken and if he were gone I’d feel it.”

“You really care about him, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do. Do you think it’s possible to love someone so much that you’ve just met?” Isabel questioned.

“Isabel…you’ve known Alex for more than half your life.”

“No,” Isabel shook her head, “I knew of him, but never bothered to look any deeper before now. I wasted so much time…”

“I haven’t been very fair or nice to you, have I?” Now that she’d gotten to know Isabel, Maria felt ashamed for the way she had always treated her.

“I never gave you a reason to be nice to me. Look, Maria…I know who I was before and I didn’t even like her…I just hope you see that I’m different now.”

“Yep…you’re different alright. I just never thought you’d turn out to be a martian.” Maria giggled, despite the circumstances.

“Very funny. Ha ha.” Isabel grabbed another pillow and chucked it at Maria.

“I couldn’t resist.” Maria teased.

The smile on Isabel’s face disappeared and once again her features were serious. “Maria, I know that everything is crazy right now so you’re tolerating me, but…will we still be friends when we get back to Roswell?”

Maria thought about teasing Isabel some more, but by her expression she could see Isabel was afraid that life as they knew it would just return to normal, and once again she’d be alone. “I think it’s safe to say you’re stuck with us, Isabel. Whatever we were before no longer exists…you’re one of us.” About that time Maria’s stomach rumbled sending both girls into a fit of giggles. “Guess I should’ve eaten something.”

“Me too…I’m starving, but it just didn’t seem…right.”

“Trust me…I know. But then again, you said you know Alex is ok, and if I know Alex he’s gonna be starving too.” Maria winked at Isabel, breaking the tension once again.

“Well…do you think we should get some food?” Isabel asked knowing there was hardly any food in Max’s pantry.

Before she could answer Maria’s stomach rumbled again. “Yeah…I’d say so.”

“But which one of us should go? Max told me to stay with both of you to keep you safe.”

“I’ll go.” Maria grabbed her sneakers and pulled them onto her feet.

“But, Maria…”

“No buts. We’re hungry. Alex will be hungry. Besides, it’s daylight out and I can take care of myself.”

“You know…I don’t doubt that for a moment.” Isabel grinned.

“I’ll hurry back. The diner isn’t far and God help the person that tries to mess with Maria Deluca.” Maria winked and opened the door. “Remember…don’t open the door for strangers…you never know what kind of alien creature could be lurking around.” Maria smiled and closed the door behind her.

“Maria.” Isabel huffed and then smiled. She was really one of them.

Maria whistled as she made her way across the parking lot and around to Isabel’s SUV. As she turned the corner toward the main office she bumped into someone, smacking her head with theirs. “Ouch! Hey, you ever thought about watching where you’re going?” When there was only silence Maria opened her eyes and looked up. “What the hell are you doing here?” Maria demanded.

“Bet I was the last person you ever wanted to see again.” Kyle remarked.

“You got that right.” Instinctively Maria raised her knee swiftly, catching Kyle in the groin before he ever saw it coming.

~~~~~~~
Michael had his arm under Alex to help support his weight as they walked back to the motel. He knew Max was behind them, but didn’t try to keep up the charade of a conversation. Right now he didn’t know how to console Max, so silence was his best option. Alex wasn’t so quiet.
“You think he’s ok?” Alex looked over his shoulder and saw Max at a distance behind them.
“Nope.”
“What are we gonna do?”
“There’s nothing we can do. Unfortunately, this is something Max is gonna have to come to terms with on his own.” It was easy to talk and act casual, but Michael was worried too.
“But his father died because he saved my life. How am I supposed to ignore that?”
“You’re not. Just be grateful and give him time.” Michael shot a quick glance over his shoulder to check on Max. He’d never seen him look so lost.
“Michael?”
“You know, for someone who’s injured you sure talk a lot.”
“I know…it’s just,” Alex looked up to face Michael, “I never thanked you…for saving my life.”
Michael wished he could take part of the credit and feel heroic, but it was all Max. “I didn’t do anything.”
Alex shook his head. “No? Then who’s practically carrying me right now?”
Alex was right. For once Michael had actually done something for someone else other than himself or Max. “You’re welcome. Now could you be quiet?” Michael felt proud, but he wasn’t one to express his feelings very well. Silence was better.
Max could hear the conversation going on between Michael and Alex, but he made no effort to join in. He replayed everything over again in his mind, but there was nothing he could have done differently. His father had left him with no choice. He was only protecting himself and his friends. He’d never meant to…Max let his thoughts trail off before he finished them. It had been an accident, nothing more. For years he’d wanted his father back…the man he’d been before Max’s mother had died, and for a brief moment he’d seen that man again…then he was gone. Max wasn’t sure what he felt guiltier about. Did he feel guilty because, whether he intended to hurt him or not, his father was dead, or was it because he felt relieved? He felt so ashamed for feeling that way, but it was the truth. Phillip Evans hadn’t been a true father to him in years, so to him he’d died years ago. Did that make it ok?
“We’re almost home, Maxwell.” Michael called back to him.
Home. Max didn’t feel like he had a home anymore. This wasn’t his home. Too many horrible memories lingered here for it to ever be home again. He looked at the small motel and wanted nothing more than to leave and never come back. Then he thought of Liz. She was his home now and for that he smiled.
~~~~~~~

“Maria!” Kyle coughed and tried to get back on his feet. “What the hell was that for?”

“If you have to ask then your brain is in worse shape than the doctors thought!” Maria could feel her temper getting the best of her. Kyle Valenti had destroyed Liz, and had it not been for him none of them ever would’ve come here, and Alex never would’ve been in danger. She watched as Kyle attempted to stand back up, but she kicked him again. “If you have any brain cells left…you’ll stay down!”

“Don’t I get a chance to explain?” Kyle asked from his position on the ground. For once he was taking someone else’s advice and staying down.

”Explain what? Explain that you’re a lying sack of shit that isn’t fit to lick Liz’s shoes? Or how about this…you can lie to me about how you weren’t screwing around with Tess Harding! Save it, Kyle! No explanation you could ever give could fix the things you’ve ruined!”

“But I’m here to make things right with Liz.”

“The hell you are! If I catch you anywhere near Liz, my foot won’t be the only thing planted in your crotch! Go home, Kyle! You don’t belong here!” Maria stormed off but instead of heading for the SUV she went back to Max’s apartment.

“That was quick.” Isabel stated quietly.

“Change of plans.” Maria was furious. How dare Kyle show up here! Maria was having a hard enough time trying to deal with Alex’s kidnapping…she didn’t have time or the energy to deal with Kyle too.

Sensing her obvious anger, Isabel rose and went to Maria. “What happened? You’ve only been gone a couple of minutes.”

“Well…you’re not going to believe who I just ran into.” Maria’s fists were clinched so tightly, she could feel her nails going through the skin in her palms.

“Who?” Isabel questioned in confusion. They didn’t know anyone else in Opal Cliff and Maria hadn’t been gone for more than five minutes.

Maria stopped pacing the floor and took several deep breaths trying to calm herself, but every time she pictured Kyle’s face her nostrils would start flaring again. “Kyle. Yep, you heard me. Kyle Valenti is here. As if life weren’t crappy enough right now…as if we didn’t have enough to worry about…God decides we need more obstacles!”

“Ssh, Maria.” Isabel pointed at Liz’s sleeping form and pulled Maria out the front door. “You gotta calm down…Liz can’t take much more right now…Max even said so.”

“Don’t you think I know that!” Maria threw both arms in the air. When was it ever going to be enough?

Isabel placed a supportive hand on Maria’s shoulder, but it was clear that she was too upset. “Well, you know what they say…God never gives us more than we can handle.” Isabel knew that neither one of them was overly religious, but it had been the first thing that came to mind.

“Then I wish God didn’t trust me so much!” Maria responded.

Isabel was about to try again when she saw Max, Michael, and Alex approaching from the beachfront. “Alex!” She didn’t pause, there was no hesitation in her now, she’d wasted enough time, but no more. “Oh my God, Alex!” Isabel reached them quickly and threw both arms around Alex almost knocking him to the ground. “I thought I’d lost you!” She was crying now and holding on to Alex for dear life.

Maria wasn’t far behind Isabel. When she saw Alex her heart started racing and nothing could’ve stopped her. She threw both of her arms around Alex also, overwhelming him slightly. “Alex! You’re ok! Oh my god! You’re ok!”

“Yes, yes…I’m fine. Thanks to those two right there.” Alex smiled in Michael and Max’s direction.

Michael and Max watched as the two girls crowded Alex, nearly smothering him. Finally, Maria released her hold on Alex and walked over to Max and Michael. “I don’t care who or what you are…thank you for bringing him back to us.” She leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on Max’s cheek first, then Michael’s. “Thank you so much.”

Liz had heard the commotion coming from outside and it had startled her. She woke up to the sound of yelling and she was all alone. She stood up slowly, making sure to get her balance and then walked to the door. While she was afraid to open the door she was just as afraid of being alone. Her hand was resting on the doorknob and she slowly turned and pulled the door toward her. The moment the door opened there was Alex standing before her. “Alex! Oh my God!” Much like the other two girls had, she launched herself into his arms. “I was so scared!” Liz stepped back and examined him more closely. “You’re ok. You’re really ok!” She wrapped her arms around him again, squeezing tightly. “I love you, Alex.”

After several more minutes Liz finally released Alex and went to Max. “How can I ever thank you?”

Max shifted nervously from one foot to the other. “Liz…please…if it weren’t for me he never would’ve been in this mess.”

Liz reached up and tugged at Max’s lowered chin. “Look at me,” she waited until his eyes met hers, “this was not your fault. Thank you for bringing him back to us.”

“You’re welcome.” Max whispered relieved. He was sure they would all blame him for what his father had done, but they didn’t. Peace finally washed over Max as he realized that everything might be ok after all. One thing he knew for sure, no matter what happened, they would all be together.

Hey everyone :) Well, it's Tuesday and I'm here. I wasn't going to post anything this week but Saturday night we had friends over to play poker and by the time they left I was so wound up I decided to try and do something constructive. Now this chapter was written at 3 am so go easy on me :wink: This chapter is also purely transitional. There isn't really any action, but it's setting the characters up for where they need to be for things to come. It's short, but something is better than nothing, right? I won't be posting a chapter next Tuesday for sure. My mom's surgery is Friday, so I'll have other things to worry about and since she's my editor I won't have anyone to proofread anything I could write. Hopefully this chapter is ok...she had a lot on her mind when editing this and she didn't have to do it at all, but she did. Just know I'll be back as soon as I'm able. I hope you enjoy...

CHAPTER 23

Liz had been absolutely ecstatic the moment she’d seen Alex coming back to them alive, but even with all of the excitement she couldn’t miss the obvious pain and torment written all over Max’s face. She had no idea of what had actually transpired when Michael and Max had gone to get Alex, but from the looks of it…it had been terrible. For almost an hour she’d been working up the courage to face Max, but she could see he wanted to be left alone.

Max sat among the group for as long as he could stomach it, but the last few hours were forever burned into his brain. He knew, even now, that he hadn’t been given a choice…he’d done what he had to do to save an innocent young boy along with himself and Michael, but those last minutes with his father were making everything more difficult to handle the situation. He’d seen it. It may have been brief, but in those final minutes, he’d seen the father he’d known so many years before. Finally, unable to watch the pleasantries between the others, he excused himself. He was thankful to be alive and thankful that they had not been hurt, but at what cost?

Liz watched as Max politely excused himself and went outside. Although she was curious to know the details of what had happened, for once she saw that it was not the right time. Max needed space, and she would give him that. Liz noticed instantly that she was not the only one worried about Max right now. Michael had been watching him like a hawk and had been quieter than usual. Liz listened as Alex, Maria, and Isabel chatted, but she couldn’t seem to focus on their conversation. Slowly she stood up and went to Michael. “Hey.”

“Hey, Liz.” Michael was cordial, but his eyes never met Liz’s.

“Michael,” Liz started gently, placing a tender hand on his arm, “I don’t know what happened, and it’s obviously not the right time to approach Max…but can you at least tell me one thing?”

Michael just nodded, totally at a loss for words, and silently praying Liz’s request would be an easy one.

“Is he ok? Don’t lie to me, because I can see he’s clearly a mess…just tell me if I should be worried.”

Michael sighed. As much as he wanted to tell Liz to back off, Michael was not a stupid man. Max was going through his own private hell at the moment, but maybe, just maybe, Liz could help him through this. “Liz…he’s a mess. I can’t go into details right now, but I can honestly say that Max has never needed you more. I wouldn’t ask him questions…I’d just be there to listen.”

Liz smiled and patted his arm softly. “Thank you, Michael.” Reaching over Liz kissed his cheek and then followed Max outside. If he needed her…she would be there. She walked out the front door and spotted Max instantly. He was a short distance away, standing on the edge of the beach. Liz’s heart ached at the distraught expression covering his face, and part of her wanted to back away…but she couldn’t. Slowly, she walked toward Max and waited for him to acknowledge her presence. He saw her, but did not speak. “Hi, Max…I was worried…I just wanted to make sure you were all right.”

“I think I am…but I’m not sure if it’s all sunk in yet.” Max stated, never taking his eyes off the ocean. “You know I’ve lived here my whole life…I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat in this very spot and watched the waves break against the shore.” Max sat there in a trance watching the ocean for several more minutes before speaking again. “The ocean reminds me of life…one minute peaceful, with the waves rolling along, and then the next…everything changes and the waves beat against the shoreline like life blowing up in your face.”

“Max,” Liz knew it wasn’t the time, but she was getting more and more worried about Max with each passing second, “I don’t know what happened today, but thank you. Thank you for saving Alex’s life.” Liz said sincerely.

“He’s gone, Liz…he’s dead.” Max continued to watch the waves, unable to look at Liz as he relayed the events that had taken place. “He’s gone and it’s my fault…but it’s not my fault. Does that make any sense? My father is dead…I could’ve saved him, but I didn’t.”

Liz was afraid to probe any further. She’d known from the moment they’d returned that things had not gone smoothly, but she didn’t think Phillip Evans was dead. Now words escaped her. How do you comfort someone after they’ve just lost a parent in what Liz assumed were violent circumstances? “Max.” She tried to find some words of wisdom, but there weren’t any. The last week had been a constant roller coaster. Absolutely terrifying and yet full of life, so how was it that it had ended in death? “I’m sorry…had I never come here…”

“Don’t.” Max finally pulled his gaze away from the ocean and met Liz’s eyes for the first time. “This isn’t your fault, Liz. Actually, this has been coming to a head for a long time…I just never knew it would end like this.”

“End?” Liz swallowed hard. This was the moment she’s been dreading the most. The moment where her fairytale ended, and she went back to Roswell without the love of her life, to face the nightmare of what her life had become. “I understand, Max. Just please know that I’m sorry. These last few days have been more special to me than you will ever realize…I’m just sorry I brought so much pain into your life.” Liz turned away quickly before Max could see the tears streaming down both of her cheeks.

“Liz, wait.” Max didn’t move quickly, but walked over to face Liz. “I don’t want you to go…not without me.”

“But, Max…look at all the pain I’ve brought into your life. I never meant for you to get hurt.” Liz sniffled, but tried to hold back the full weight of her emotions.

“You just don’t get it…Liz, my life has been hell for a long time. Until you came along, I thought this was all my life was destined to be…but you changed that. You showed me what it was like to love again…I didn’t think that was possible.”

“But your Dad…Max, how can you ever forgive me?”

Max smiled slightly and raised a hand to gently brush her cheek. “There’s nothing to forgive. My life started the moment I met you, and my dad…to be honest with you he died years ago.

“I don’t understand.”

“Liz, everything that happened today was beyond horrible, but in those final seconds I saw the man my dad used to be, and he was ready to go. I wanted to heal him…even after everything, but he didn’t want that. He told me to let him go.” His heart was still broken inside, but Max was quickly coming to terms with his father’s death. Not because he’d wanted him dead, but because Max knew now that it was what his dad had wanted. Maybe in his own way, it had been Phillip Evan’s time to go. Max never would’ve understood that concept before meeting Liz, but now he knew what it was like to love with your whole heart, and he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose that total, undying love he felt for her.

“He wanted to go?” Liz asked quietly.

“Yeah…I think in a way he’d been waiting for this day, because now he can finally be with my mom again.”

“How do you feel about that?”

“Surprisingly…I’m starting to find some peace in it all.”

“So…what happens now?”

“Well…Michael and I still have to figure out what to do with my father’s remains…”

“And then?” Liz knew she was pushing her luck. While she understood the gravity of the situation, she wanted to know if there was still a future for her and Max.

“Then…we take you home.” Max saw the devastated look cross Liz’s face and instantly knew she was thinking the worst. “But if you don’t mind…I’d like to go with you.”

Liz looked up into Max’s eyes again, stunned and sure she’d heard him wrong. “What?”

Max reached up and touched her cheek again. “You’re my home now, Liz Parker…where you go…I go.”

Still sad and yet relieved she fell into Max’s open arms. For the first time, she really thought that everything might actually work out.

~~~~~~~
“You ok?” Maria had waited for the conversation to die down, and could take the hint that Alex and Isabel wanted to be alone. She smiled as she watched the two sneak off to find a quiet place of their own, and realized it was time to face Michael.
“I really don’t know.” Michael sat there in front of Maria, lost and shaken to his very core…something that never happened to Michael. “My whole life I’ve always known what to do, but now…now I don’t even know where my life stands.”
“Michael…I don’t know what happened to you guys today, but I do know you brought my best friend back to me…alive and in one piece. For that…I’ll always be grateful.”
“It’s strange…today has been one complete tragedy, and yet I feel closure for the first time in years.”
“Does that mean Max’s dad is…” Maria tried to force out the words to the one question she needed answered, but she couldn’t. When they’d come back she’d somehow known Phillip Evans was dead, but hearing it out loud…made it real. She could tell by Michael’s face that she was right. “I’m so sorry…we never meant to…”
Michael could see where the conversation was going, so he stopped Maria before she could say another word. “Don’t. This wasn’t anyone’s fault…it’s just the way the pieces fell.”
“How can you be so calm?”
“Because…this day has been coming for years. I’m just sorry Alex was almost killed in the process.” Michael felt odd. Everything had happened so fast, but now looking back he couldn’t help but wonder if this had been Phillip Evan’s plan all along.
Maria stepped closer, making Michael obviously uncomfortable. “Michael Guerin, what am I going to do with you?” She’d asked the question, but she answered it herself. Her lips found Michael’s and this time she didn’t hold back. It didn’t matter any longer that Max, Michael, and Isabel were different…it only mattered that for once she knew what she wanted and wasn’t about to let him slip away.
~~~~~~~

“You know, Alex…I’ve never been so scared in my life, and that says a lot considering the secret I’ve spent a lifetime trying to keep.” Isabel’s heart was still beating so fast…she was looking at Alex and touching Alex, but she felt like any minute she would wake up and he would be gone.

Alex grinned from ear to ear. It had definitely been one hell of a day, and he was sure the full impact would hit him later, but for now…he was sitting here with Isabel…the girl of his dreams, and that was his biggest dream come true. “Isabel…it’s over and I’m ok.”

“I know…but I promised myself that if you came back to me safely I’d never waste another minute.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that I think I love you, Alex Whitman.” Isabel watched the shock as it appeared on Alex’s face. “I know all of this probably seems too soon, but I’ve never felt this way, Alex. I’ve spent my whole life hiding from everyone and everything, but for once I feel like I have no reason to run and no reason to hide,” Isabel reached over and tipped Alex’s chin to face her. “And it’s all because of you. I feel like I’ve found myself this past week and I’m more afraid of losing you than I am of being discovered.”

“You know I would never tell anyone, right?”

“Yes…I do know, but what I’m even more sure of…is that I belong with you, and I’m never going to let anything stand in the way of that again.”

“Wow.” Alex whispered.

“What?”

“Well, my biggest wish finally came true.” Alex smiled again as Isabel leaned forward and their lips met. It was slow and tender at first, but quickly the longing between them grew and Alex took Isabel into his arms. With every ounce of passion inside of him, Alex surrendered himself to Isabel, and this time there was no turning back.

~~~~~~~
Liz smiled contently, despite the horrible circumstances, as she and Max strolled down the beach. “I can’t believe we’re really going to go through with this.”
“Any second thoughts?”
“Not at all. I’m scared, but with you by my side I feel like I could take on the world.”
Max knew what he had to do. He and Michael still had important matters to deal with, but Liz had her own skeleton waiting for her back at the motel and there was no telling how long it would take for Liz to stumble across Kyle Valenti. It was the last thing he wanted, but Liz had to face Kyle…there wasn’t any other choice. “Liz…I have something else to tell you.” Max paused, not wanting this to be happening, but after everything he’d been through today, he knew honesty was his only option.
“What is it, Max?” Liz questioned, still smiling. After all, what could be worse than what they’d already been through?
Max stopped walking and faced Liz. He took her hands in his, and then took a deep breath. “It’s about Kyle.”
“You know…I’m not so worried about him anymore. We’ve proven we can overcome anything together. Besides, I have until we get back to Roswell to worry about how to handle him.”
“Not really.” Max stated, closing his eyes.
Liz looked at Max, confused. “What are you talking about, Max?”
“Liz, I’d give anything in the world to protect you from this, but I can’t.”
Liz was starting to get worried. Max’s whole demeanor had changed in one brief moment and now he faced her with sad eyes once again. “Just tell me, Max…what is it?”
It was the moment of truth and Max couldn’t turn back now. “Liz…Kyle’s back at the motel…he’s waiting for you.”
Liz couldn’t speak. She stood there in total silence, taking in what Max had just said. Kyle was here, which meant she was out of time.
Here I am and only 1 day late! My mom totally rocks :D Hope you enjoy!
CHAPTER 24
Liz could feel her heart racing as she approached the door to Kyle’s room. She’d discussed all of her options with Max, but in the end the answer had been obvious. She didn’t want to see Kyle, but she knew she couldn’t move on and have a future with Max until she had dealt with her past, and Kyle was definitely her past. Standing at the door, she looked down and saw that her hands were trembling. She was nervous and with good reason. Liz knew Kyle well enough to know that he wanted more from her than to just talk. Most likely he’d come here to win her back and take her home, but it wouldn’t work…not this time. Her life was with Max now. Max had offered to come with her, but this was something she had to do on her own. Finally, after several minutes of procrastination, she raised her fist and knocked on the door. Kyle answered the door quickly, as if he’d been expecting someone, but by the shock on his face Liz knew it wasn’t her.
“Liz.” Kyle whispered.
Liz took a deep breath and walked inside before he even had a chance to invite her in. She wanted to appear confident, even if she was falling apart on the inside. “Hello, Kyle.”
Kyle closed the door slowly. He stood there for a minute staring at Liz, not knowing what to say. He had so many things he’d planned to say, but right now his mind was drawing a blank. “I thought you were pizza.” Kyle, you’re an idiot!
“Excuse me?”
“I just…well I ordered and I thought…” Shut up, Kyle! Just shut up!
“Oh,” Liz said when she realized what he’d meant. “I can come back later if you want me to.” Liz started back toward the door hoping she was getting off the hook.
“No!” Kyle called out, startling Liz. “I mean please don’t go. It’s good to see you, Liz. I was worried…you look good.”
“Thank you. I’m trying to take care of myself, which hasn’t been easy under the circumstances.” Liz wasn’t intentionally trying to be mean, but she knew the anger was evident in her voice.
“Liz, I…”
She held up a hand to stop him. “Save it. If you’re going to apologize I neither need it, nor want to hear it. I came here to see you, Kyle, because I knew I had to…not because I wanted to. I think I could’ve gone the rest of my life without seeing you and been just fine with it.” It felt good to finally express the anger and resentment she held against Kyle.
“Liz, please…I know I’ve hurt you, and I…”
Liz interrupted him again. “You’re right, Kyle…you did hurt me, but I think you also did me a favor. You see I could’ve been stuck with you for the rest of my life, because I felt like it was the right thing to do, but thanks to your actions I no longer feel any obligation to do that.”
“Liz, we have to talk about this.” Kyle demanded.
“We are talking.”
“No…you’re talking. So far I haven’t been able to say anything.” Kyle knew he had no right to be angry with Liz, but she wasn’t giving him a chance to explain anything.
“Fine, Kyle. What do you want to say?” Liz tapped her foot impatiently, while staring at him. He just stood there, silent. “Well, this has been fascinating, but obviously you don’t have anything to say worth listening to.” Liz reached for the doorknob, but Kyle blocked her exit. “Get out of my way, Kyle.” She said through gritted teeth.
“No, not until we talk. You can hate me all you want…God knows you’ve earned the right, but we have to talk about this. Whether you like it or not, I have a right to know and be involved with my child…you can’t deny me that.”
“You smug bastard.” Liz hissed out. “You want to talk to me about what rights you may have? I think, under the circumstances, any judge would side with me.”
“Is that really what you want, Liz? You want to go to court and fight me? Honestly? I would think with a baby on the way, and a new husband you would have better things to do.” Kyle saw the shock wash over Liz’s face. “Yeah, Liz, I know. All I can say is how could you? You’re pregnant with my child and you run off and marry some stranger?”
“Max is a wonderful man, and he’s no stranger!” Liz could feel her blood boiling. How dare he lecture her!
“Oh really! So you were seeing him before? Is that baby even mine?” Kyle regretted the question the moment it escaped his lips, but there was no way to take it back. He regretted it even more when Liz’s hand slapped him hard across the face.
“You son of a bitch!”
Kyle walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed. This wasn’t how he’d wanted this to go, and every time he opened his mouth he seemed to make things worse. “I’m sorry, Liz…I didn’t mean that. I know you’re not like that and none of this is your fault. I’m the asshole, and I’m completely responsible for everything that has gone wrong.”
“Ok, I’m listening.” Well, if he’s going to sit here and insult himself it won’t kill me to listen.
“I’ve screwed up so many things, and I’m not going to make it worse by thinking a simple apology can fix any of it. You have no idea how much I want to take back everything I’ve done, but I can’t. I’ve hurt so many people…not just you, but I’m trying to make it right. I’m not saying it will be easy, but I’m trying, Liz…can you at least give me that much?”
After everything, the last thing Liz wanted was to feel sorry for Kyle, but she did. He was scum, that much was true, but she’d known him her whole life and she was carrying his child. But even worse…she’d never seen him look so lost and pathetic. “Kyle, I believe that you want to make things right, but you just can’t. The damage is done, and I’m sorry just doesn’t make it any better. I’ve moved on with my life and I’m happy, or at least I have the chance to be. Can you give me that much?”
Kyle hung his head in shame. “So, it’s over?”
“Kyle, I think it’s been over for a long time and we just didn’t see it.”
“But I love you, Liz.” Kyle looked back up and met her eyes.
“No, Kyle. I think you love the idea of me, but I’m not the person you knew before.”
“Liz, it’s been less than two weeks…I think I still know you.”
“No, Kyle, you don’t. I don’t know who I was before, but I can tell you that the person I am now is different. And I’m in love with Max Evans and I plan on making a life with him.” Liz wasn’t trying to be cruel now, but she had to make Kyle see there was no future for them.
“And the baby?”
Liz sighed. “Honestly…I haven’t thought that far ahead yet, but I can tell you that Max wants to help me raise this baby.”
Kyle nodded. He’d expected as much. “Ok, but will you make me one promise?”
“That depends on the promise.”
“Promise me you’ll come home, and that we can take this one day at a time for now. Everything has happened so fast…I just want you to take some time to think about all of this.”
“Yes, I will come home…but Max is coming with me, Kyle. Ok?”
“Ok.” It was a step in the right direction, even if it meant he had to learn to live with Max Evans.
~*~*~*~*~
They had walked the entire way to the warehouse in total silence, but Max could tell that Michael wanted to say something. Michael had the ability to say nothing louder than anyone on the planet. “It’s ok, Michael…you can talk.”
Michael looked up at Maxwell, taken slightly off guard. “What? I don’t have anything to say.”
“Right. Well, I’m just saying if you do…then you know…go ahead.”
Michael did have things to say, but he knew it wasn’t the right time. They had enough to deal with right now…everything else could wait. “So…you ready to do this?”
“You don’t get ready for something like this, Michael…you just get through it.” Max felt a wave of nausea wash over him as they entered through the back door. The events of the day were already overwhelming him and they hadn’t even come to his father’s body yet.
Michael saw the color drain away from Max’s face and knew it was too soon. “Maxwell…why don’t we do this later?”
Max wanted to take Michael up on his suggestion, but he knew this was something they had to do now. If Max walked away now, he wasn’t sure he’d ever come back. “No, Michael…I need to get this over with.”
“Ok…after you.” Michael waited for Max to continue forward, and then followed behind. At least from behind Max he could watch to see if this was too much for him to handle.
Max walked along the back wall, the images flashing over and over in his mind. I did what I had to do. He wanted to go. He’s better off now. I’m better off now. It wasn’t until the last thought crossed his mind that Max felt sick. “Oh God! How am I supposed to do this?” He leaned against the wall and allowed himself to slide down to the floor.
Michael knew this had been too much, too soon, but Max had insisted on coming with him. He’d said it was his duty. “Maxwell, let me get you out of here.” Max didn’t respond, but instead sat there crying. Michael didn’t judge him for this…what Max had been through and what he’d done would’ve shaken anyone…even him. He’d been too embarrassed to admit it before, but he’d gotten sick earlier just remembering what had happened. “You know this isn’t your fault, right?” He watched Max, but there was no change. Slowly he sat down next to him on the floor. “I’m not going to pretend I know exactly what you’re going through, Max, but one thing I do know is that you saved two people today. If it wasn’t for you Alex and I would not have survived…I know that doesn’t make what happened any easier, but you have to know you only did what he forced you to do.”
Max raised his head up from where it had been resting on his knees. “I just keep seeing it over and over again.”
”I know, and I’m sure you will for a long time, but you have to know this wasn’t your fault.”
“But it was, Michael…I killed him.”
“Yeah, and you saved me and Alex. Don’t forget that. I know it doesn’t make it easier for you right now, but you saved two lives. Try and hold onto that. Max…I think he wanted to go. I still remember what he was like when we were kids…I was so jealous because I wanted him to be my dad. Watching him and your mother and you…well it made me feel like I was part of a family. That changed when your mom died…he changed. He died years ago, Max…you just put him out of his misery.”
“And that makes it ok?”
“No, of course not, but you were defending yourself and others…that makes it ok.” Michael put an arm around Max’s shoulder. “Come on…let me take care of this later.”
“No,” Max shook his head, “I need for it to be over. I need to see this through to the end.”
”Ok then…let’s finish this.”
The two of them got up and made their way to where Phillip Evans’ body was lying. They didn’t speak again while they worked. Max tried not to look at his father’s face as he waved his hand over the bullet wound, erasing any signs that he had been injured. They rolled Phillip’s body up in plastic and carried it out the side door to where Phillip’s car was parked, then headed back into the building. Carefully, Michael moved around the bottom floor cleaning up any evidence that Alex had ever been there, or that any violence had taken place. It wasn’t a perfect plan, but it was the best plan for everyone concerned. Michael headed out the door, while Max took one last look around. Then leaving the building behind Michael, they went to finish what they had to do. The roads near the beach were very curvy and it would be easy for a sober person to go over the cliff. An autopsy would show alcohol in Phillip Evans’ system and it would be ruled an accident. Max stood at the top of the cliff and watched as the car rolled over and over before it splashed into the ocean below. Max took the bullet out of his pocket, looked at it sadly, and then stuck it back in his pocket. Hopefully, today it would finally be finished.
“Let’s go home, Maxwell.” Michael waited for Max to acknowledge him and then he turned and walked away.
~*~*~*~*~
“This sucks.”
“Maria!” Isabel and Alex said in unison. They both looked at one another and smiled.
“What? It does. Liz is off talking to that weasel, while Max and Michael are disposing of a body. To say this sucks is putting it mildly.” Maria continued painting her toe nails and pouting. She and Michael had been in the middle of something when Max came barging in, so she had every reason to be moody.
“Ok, it sucks, Maria, but it’s not like they had a choice in the matter. You know we were busy too, so you’re not the only one that was inconvenienced here.” Alex had finally come to that one moment he’d been waiting for his entire life. He’d been alone with Isabel, and she had made it clear she wanted to take their relationship to the next level…then Maria had come in whining about Max and Michael leaving her all alone. And that was it…his perfect moment in time had passed.
Isabel was getting furious. “Do you two hear yourselves? Look, I’m sorry our romantic plans were interrupted too, but right now Max is dealing with a hell of a lot more than raging hormones!”
Maria and Alex both felt about an inch tall. Neither one of them had ever been so insensitive, but neither one of them had ever been so close to their dreams either.
“You’re right, Isabel…I’m scum.” Alex mumbled, completely ashamed of his behavior.
“No, I’m scum. I’m the one that started whining first.” Maria set down the bottle of nail polish and rested her head on her knees.
The way they both had managed to turn this around and make Isabel feel guilty was incredible. “I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have yelled at you. It’s just a really difficult situation and I think we’re all on edge. This has been a really bad day and everything that could’ve possibly gone wrong has gone wrong, and now, when we need each other the most we’re bickering.”
Alex put an arm around Isabel’s shoulder and pulled her close. “No more…promise. We’re all gonna chill out and be here for them when they get back…forgive me?” Alex winked at Isabel causing her to blush. “So…what do you think is happening with Liz and Kyle? Think she could use some back up?”
“No…I think the old Liz may have needed help, but now…I think she can handle him on her own.” Maria said as she looked up.
“But aren’t you the one who told me she couldn’t handle much more right now?” Isabel questioned.
“Yeah, but you didn’t see her an hour ago. Almost makes me feel sorry for the jerk.” Alex and Isabel both looked at her like she’d just grown an extra head. “Hey, I said almost.”
“Well, I would’ve given anything to see you drop him to the ground earlier!” Alex felt no sympathy for Kyle. Not only had he gotten himself into this mess, and hurt Liz, but he should’ve been smarter than to take on Maria Deluca.
Maria smiled, still so proud of herself. “It was definitely one of my finer moments. I just wish I’d stayed and finished the job.”
“Don’t worry, Maria,” Alex held his hand low, cupping himself as he spoke, “I know for a fact he suffered.”
“Alex, you’re such a cry baby. We were in the sixth grade for crying out loud. Are you ever gonna get over it?”
“I am over it…have I ever stolen your fruit cup again?”
Isabel smiled at the two of them. She was thankful to feel like she finally belonged…she just wished she hadn’t wasted so much of her life keeping everyone at arms length.
Liz strolled into the apartment feeling better than she had in months. “Well hello, all.” She said cheerfully.
Alex and Maria were on their feet in seconds, anxious to know every detail of what happened. “Ok, spill it!”
“Yeah, Chica…what’d you do to him? Anything broken?”
“Maria…you know I’m not the violent type.”
“Oh, come on…don’t tell me you went up there and didn’t hurt him just a little.” Maria had hoped some blood would be shed.
“Maria, you’re terrible. We talked…that’s it. Well, after I hit him once.” Liz admitted, much to Maria’s satisfaction.
“I knew it! Just once though…well that sucks.”
“Actually…it went ok. I think I finally have the closure I need. Now I can move on with my life.”
“So you told him to stick it?” Maria asked, knowing she was having way too much fun with this.
“Well…no.”
“No? What do you mean no? Don’t tell me you’re gonna forgive that jackass?” Alex was so tired of guys like Kyle getting ahead, while the nice guys always got shoved to the side.
“Alex…you make it sound like I’m doing it for him. I’m not…I’m doing it for the baby and me. Whether I like it or not, he’s the father, and as much fun as hating him would be…I just don’t need the stress. I told him that my life is with Max now and that he would have to accept that. It’s just easier this way.”
“Wait…does this mean you’re not coming home?” Maria had never thought for a second that Liz would choose to stay here with Max. What about her friends? Her family?
“Maria, calm down. I’m coming home.”
“But you just said…”
“I said my future is with Max now…but Max is coming with me.”
“Oh, your dad’s gonna love that.” Alex remarked sarcastically.
Liz shrugged her shoulders. “I’m going to be eighteen in less than a week, so he doesn’t really get a say in the matter. He’ll have to learn to live with it if he wants to be in my life, or the baby’s.”
Maria walked over and wrapped her arms around Liz. “Well as long as you’re coming home…I’m happy. Besides, Max is kind of a hottie.”
Liz giggled and hugged her best friend. “So glad you approve.”
Alex walked over to the two girls and held open his arms. “Hey, what about me?”
Liz and Maria pulled him into their embrace. “You know you’ll always be our main man, Alex.” Liz teased.
“Damn straight!” Maria agreed.
“I hate to bring this up, but what about Michael? We can’t just leave him behind. I can’t…he’s my family.” Isabel said quietly.
“We all go.”
Liz, Maria, Alex, and Isabel all turned around and saw that Max and Michael had come back. Quickly, they released each other, feeling guilty that they’d been laughing, while Max and Michael had been dealing with Phillip Evans’ remains.
Michael looked at Maxwell in complete surprise. “Maxwell, I can’t…”
“Yes, you can. I’m not leaving without you and I’m sure the others will agree.” Max looked to Isabel.
“He’s right, Michael…I won’t leave without you.” Isabel confirmed.
“Me either.” Maria said.
“You helped save my life, so I’m not leaving without you. Who knows when my ass is gonna need rescuing again.” Alex teased.
“I’d say it’s unanimous.” Liz grinned when Max looked at her.
“Well, what the hell am I gonna do in Roswell, New Mexico?” Michael asked.
“Don’t worry, Spaceboy. Seeing that it’s where you hatched…I’m sure you’ll do just fine.”
“It’s settled. Everyone pack your bags…we’re going home.” Max looked around the room and finally felt like he had a family again.
Hello everyone :) I'm finally back with a chapter. It's short, but it's something. I hope you enjoy :lol:
CHAPTER 25
“Kyle, where the hell are you?” Jim screamed into the phone. He’d had almost every deputy in the station looking for his son for two days now.
Kyle took a deep breath before replying. He’d known his dad would be mad, but apparently he’d underestimated him slightly. “Dad, if you’ll just calm down I’ll…”
“Calm down! How the hell am I supposed to calm down when my son checks himself out of the hospital and disappears?” Jim imagined if he could see himself in a mirror right now there would probably be smoke coming out of both ears.
“Dad, I had to leave.”
“You had to leave? What’s that supposed to mean? You know what, never mind! Just tell me where you are and I’ll come get you.”
This was the part Kyle had been dreading. “Well, you see…it’s actually kinda funny you should ask…”
“Dammit, Kyle! I’m losing my last ounce of patience with you!”
Oh well, here it goes. “Fine, Dad…I’m in California.”
“You’re what?” Jim couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He’d told Kyle to leave Liz Parker alone, and yet that’s exactly where he went. “Kyle, I can’t believe you. Haven’t you done enough?” Jim hated the feeling of total disappointment he had in his son right now.
“It’s ok, Dad.” Kyle insisted quickly. “Everything’s fine. I talked to Liz.”
“Everything’s fine? You do the one thing I ask you not to do, but it’s ok…everything’s fine!”
“Dad,” Kyle started again, “Liz is on her way home right now.”
Jim’s mouth dropped open and he sat there for a few moments unable to speak. “She’s what? Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure. We talked. It was hard, and she made her intentions pretty clear, but once she realized she didn’t have to hide from me anymore she decided it was time to go home.”
“Oh thank God. Her parents will be so relieved.” Jim let out a long sigh of relief himself.
“Wait, Dad…you can’t tell them.”
“Excuse me?”
“Yes, she’s on her way home, but I think in this case the element of surprise might be for the best.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Jim rubbed his temples and silently cursed for not buying more aspirin for his office.
“No, Dad…I’m not. You said it yourself…she’s been through enough. If her parents know she’s coming they’ll have a few days to clear their minds and plan an attack against her.”
“Kyle, they’re her parents. All they want is their baby girl home safe again.”
“Really? Ok, and how exactly did they react when they found out she was pregnant?”
Jim hated to admit it, but Kyle was right. The Parkers were wonderful parents, but they hadn’t exactly been happy that their daughter was pregnant. While he couldn’t blame them, he could spare Liz the extra stress. He owed her that much. After all, it had been his son that had caused most of this. “Ok, Kyle…you win. I won’t tell them yet. When are you coming home?”
“My flight leaves in two hours.”
“Just be careful…see you soon.” Jim placed the receiver back on the hook and stared at it for a minute. He knew things were about to get much more complicated.
~*~*~*~*~
“Are we there yet?” Maria whined from the back seat, earning her an eye roll from Alex.
Isabel, on the other hand, had already had enough. “Christ All Mighty, Maria!”
“Thank you, Isabel. It’s nice to see someone finally addressing me in the proper manner.” Maria smiled widely.
“Maria, could you please just shut up?” Alex closed his eyes in an attempt to fight off the headache that had been threatening since the moment they’d left Opal Cliff.
“God, Alex! Could you be any more rude?” Maria retorted.
Me? Could I be any more rude? Actually…yes, I could, but I’m attempting to keep peace and not upset your delicate emotional balance.” Five more minutes and I swear I’m gonna kill her!
“What did I do?” Maria asked and stuck her lip out in a pout.
“Maria!” Alex finally jerked around in his seat so he could face her. “What did you do? Hmm…let me see…what could you have done that would make me want to kill you? Oh, I remember…you’ve asked the same question every five minutes for the last hour! Do you think that might have something to do with my crappy attitude?”
“So…what’s wrong with me asking?” Maria said innocently.
“Because we just left an hour ago! There’s no possible way we could be there yet and you know it! So once again, shut up!” Alex was usually very mild tempered, but Maria was driving him insane.
Maria sat there in silence for a few minutes, but silence just wasn’t her strong suit. “Well, isn’t there a faster way?”
“Sure. You call your mom, beg for money for a plane ticket, and we’ll drop you at the next airport.”
“No…I didn’t mean an airplane…can’t you little green people wiggle your noses and transport us home?”
“Maria.” Alex growled.
“What? Can’t Jeannie up there do it?”
“Oh no.” Alex buried his face in his hands out of pure embarrassment.
“Jeannie?” Isabel asked, irritated.
“Yeah Jeannie, or Samantha would work too.”
“You can’t be serious.” Isabel responded. The sad thing was…she knew Maria was serious.
Maria’s eyes went wide. “Yeah. Don’t tell me you’ve never seen ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ or ‘Bewitched’ because that’s just a crime against nature.”
“Oh, Maria…please shut up.” Alex mumbled with his face still buried.
”Nope. Never heard of them.” Now Isabel was just trying to irritate Maria.
Oh…my…God! That’s just not right on so many levels! You could learn so much from them.” Maria had grown up on old re-runs of both shows, so she just couldn’t understand how three aliens had managed to miss them.
“I’m sorry, but what exactly do you think we could learn from them?” Isabel asked while getting more and more frustrated.
“You know…about your powers.” Maria replied simply.
“Maria,” Isabel started slowly, “just in case you forgot, which I really am hoping is the case, they were witches…not aliens.”
“Witches, aliens, what’s the difference?”
Alex lifted his head and looked at Isabel in the driver’s seat. “Just so you know…she’s my friend, but I would totally understand if you wanted to kill her.”
“Thanks for the support, Alex…traitor.” Maria said sarcastically.
Isabel slowly pulled off onto the shoulder of the road and watched in her rearview mirror as the two cars behind her did the same. Now she was thankful they’d put her in the lead. “I’d say it’s Michael’s turn to have her.” Isabel said as she opened the door and climbed out.
“But Michael said not a chance in hell.” Alex called out to her.
Isabel poked her head back inside the vehicle. “Well, Alex…we’re in hell!” Before he could stop her again, Isabel slammed the door and stomped off toward Michael’s truck.
“I have a really bad feeling this is about to get ugly.” Alex said before opening his door and climbing out too.
Isabel stormed up to Michael’s truck and he was already jumping out of the driver’s seat, waving his arms in the air. “No! No way! I told you not a chance in hell!”
Isabel smiled. “Then it’s your lucky day…we’re in hell!”
“But it’s only been an hour?” Michael replied desperately. He liked Maria and their chemistry was out of this world, but that didn’t mean he wanted to be trapped in a car with her.
Max strolled up holding Liz’s hand and smiling widely. “What’s going on?” He asked cheerfully.
Isabel stomped over to him now and jammed her finger into his chest repeatedly as she yelled, causing him to drop Liz’s hand. “I’ll tell you what’s going on! It’s someone else’s turn to take Maria for a while!”
“But it’s only been an hour?” Max said confused.
“See!” Michael jumped in. “That’s what I said!”
“Quiet! I’m talking now. So, would you like me to decide which one of you gets her, or would you like to draw straws?” Isabel hissed through gritted teeth.
Max and Michael looked at each other and then back to Isabel. “He gets her!” They both said together.
“Why me?” Max asked.
“Because…well because you have a bigger car.” Michael was grasping at anything now.
“Well, I think you should get her.” Max stated forcefully.
“Why me?”
“Cause you’re the only one that’s shoved your tongue down her throat!” Max insisted.
Michael gulped, already feeling the defeat. He’d lost by default. “Ok. Deluca, get your stuff…you’re with me.”
“Why can’t you be the guy and get it for me?”
“Sorry.” Michael rubbed his lower back, “bad back…can’t lift boulders.”
Max rolled his eyes and looked at Liz. She’d remained silent through the entire exchange with a smile plastered on her face. “I’ll help you, Maria…since pansy ass over there won’t.” Max jerked his thumb in Michael’s direction, and then walked over to Isabel’s SUV.
“Thank you, Max.” Maria sent a fiery glare in Michael’s direction. “Nice to know there are still a few gentlemen left.”
“Can we get back on the road now?” Alex asked.
“Sure.” Max replied after loading Maria’s twenty suitcases and bags into Michael’s truck. “Everyone get back in your cars. Michael, don’t kill Maria.” Max winked and shut the passenger side door to Michael’s truck.
“No promises.” Michael mumbled as they all pulled back onto the highway. This is gonna be a long drive.
~*~*~*~*~
Jim was still sitting at his desk when he heard a knock on the door. “Come in.” As the door opened Jim looked up, but it wasn’t one of his deputies standing before him. “Aaron? How are you, son?” Jim had always thought of Aaron like a son, so it was great to see him…despite the uncomfortable circumstances.
“I’m ok, Sir. It’s great to see you.”
“You too. Please, have a seat.” Jim waited for Aaron to pull up a chair before he spoke again. “So, what brings you here this beautiful afternoon? Shame we’re stuck inside, don’t ya think?”
“Yes, Sir. Actually, I came to talk to you about everything going on.”
“Oh.” Jim had been expecting this, but he still didn’t know what to say. “I’m sure this must be very tough for you. You’ve been through a lot these last few years.”
“Yes, Sir…I have. That’s why I’m here. I know it’s not fair to put you in the middle of our problems, but I wanted to know if you knew what Kyle’s intentions were.” Aaron’s hands were sweating and shaking, so he was careful to hide them at his sides.
“I think I understand where you’re coming from. If you’re worried that Kyle will interfere with you and Tess, you shouldn’t be. I know this sounds cruel, but he isn’t the least bit interested in pursuing a relationship with her.”
“That’s not really my concern, Sir. I was thinking about the baby.”
“Oh, I just assumed because I’ve heard around town you’ve been seen with Tess Harding quite frequently lately.”
“That’s true, but not for the reasons you or she, for that matter, think.” Aaron said angrily.
“I’m sorry, son. I’m just a little confused.”
Aaron shifted in his chair and then looked at Jim again. “I know Tess thinks we’re getting close, and she’s even deluded herself into thinking we have a future…but she couldn’t be more wrong. I could never forgive her for what she did to me or Liz, but if that child’s mine I want it.”
Suddenly seeing the full picture, Jim understood. “You mean you would want custody of the child?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“And Miss Harding?”
”Well, Sir…I really don’t care what she does and I’m confident I have a chance at custody. More and more courts are awarding children to their fathers, and if I can show the kind of person she really is…well then I’m hopeful. I just don’t want any surprises so I need to know if Kyle will be fighting me for custody.”
Jim sat back in his chair and smiled. He’s always thought highly of Aaron and this was no different. He didn’t know if Aaron would have a chance at full custody even if the child was his, but he admired Aaron for stepping up to the plate. “Aaron, I don’t think that would happen even under the best of circumstances, so obviously, with the way things are, I don’t think Kyle would fight you on anything.”
Relieved, Aaron took a deep breath. “Thank you, Sir. That’s what I was hoping you’d say.” Aaron stood up and started to leave.
“Aaron?”
“Yes, Sir?”
“Just remember you’ll always be family. If you need anything…I’ll always be here.”
Aaron smiled and nodded. Then, he turned and left Jim’s office.
Well, well, well, Miss Harding…it appears you’re not going to get away with everything after all.
Hey everyone :) I'm posting a day early this week because I'm having minor surgery this afternoon and didn't want you all to have to wait. I was totally doped up on medication when I wrote this chapter, and yet I think it's one of my best...go figure :wink:
I also wanted to clarify really quick that Tess is not an alien! I just don't like her so she seemed like the perfect villian! The "pod squad" came out of the pods at about the age of two, so they have almost no memory about where they came from. I kept the alien aspect in this fic so Max could feel Liz's baby, Isabel would feel drawn to Opal Cliff, and a few more reasons to come :wink:
Ok, gonna shut up now...I hope you enjoy the chapter!
Oh, btw...two lines of this chapter were taken from the movie Empire Records. Obviously, I don't own any rights to this movie :wink:
CHAPTER 26
The hours continued to roll on, but Liz felt as though time was standing still. The scenery outside the window whipped by, but Liz saw nothing. Her mind, so overwhelmed with thoughts, refused to let anything else in. She felt queasy, as if everything was about to fall apart. Finally, unable to bear the silence any longer, she looked at Max. He looked so peaceful, so content. Was it really right for her to disturb that? Liz wanted nothing more than to see Max happy after everything he’d been through, but right now she needed him. Needed to hear his voice, needed to hear him reassure her that everything was going to be all right. Most of all, she needed for him to help her break out of the black hole that seemed to be swallowing her.
“Max?”
Max smiled at Liz as he turned his head. He’d been thinking about everything they would have to face once they got to Roswell, and his thoughts had been far from pleasant, but looking at Liz he only saw beauty. “Liz.” He said playfully.
“I need to talk to you.”
Max felt the knot in the pit of his stomach, start to grow. Her tone was serious, which made Max worry. “Ok…shoot. You know you can tell me anything, Liz.” He spoke the truth, but at the moment the truth was what worried him the most.
“I know, Max.” Liz started and then began playing with her fingers. She was stalling. She needed to talk to Max, but was scared of the answers she might get in return.
Max sensed her urge to pull away, so he reached over and took her hand into his own. “It’s ok, Liz…together we can handle anything.”
“Max…I just have so many worries, and so many questions running through my head and they won’t stop. I’m scared.” She finally whispered.
“Liz, there’s nothing to be afraid of. We’re together, and together we can solve anything. I’m not going anywhere Liz…you’re not alone.”
While his words were in fact reassuring, there were still so many questions and answers that needed to be dealt with. “It’s not you I’m afraid of, Max. It’s everything else. The last week has been nothing but a nightmare, and I know once we reach Roswell it’s only going to get worse. I mean…ok, well first of all, everyone thinks we’re married. Then, there’s the baby, which no one is going to be too thrilled about. My parents are going to go into cardiac arrest when they meet you, since I’m sure they know I’m pregnant with Kyle’s child. And, as if that isn’t enough to worry about I still know almost nothing about you. I know I love you and that I’m drawn to you, but I don’t know you.” It probably wasn’t the best way to approach the conversation, but blurting it out was the only way Liz knew she could say it.
It was amazing! They’d only known each other for a short time, but every thought Liz had, Max had. Every worry Liz carried within her, Max was worried about also. Max could no longer tell where he ended and Liz began…they simply felt like one. Max couldn’t help but laugh at the entire situation.
Liz was taken aback by the sound of Max’s laughter. Here she was about to have a breakdown, and he was laughing. What was so funny? “Max, I don’t think this is in any way funny. I tell you I’m scared and you laugh at me? That’s just not right.”
Again, Max laughed. “I’m sorry, Liz. I’m not laughing at you, but more at the fact that we’ve been sitting here in total silence, worrying about all the same things.”
“Well, why did you laugh the second time?” Liz asked, confused.
“Oh, well that time I laughed because you sounded just like Maria.”
Liz punched him in the arm with her free hand and pulled her other hand away from him. “That is so not funny.” Liz growled.
“Liz.” Max tried to stifle a giggle but was barely successful. “I just meant that I thought you were being cute.”
“Oh, so now you think Maria’s cute? What about me, Max? Am I not good enough for you? Do you need someone a little crazier and more neurotic than me?”
By this time Max was laughing so hard that it made it difficult to concentrate on the road.
“Fine! Laugh it up! Why don’t you pull over and I’ll ride with Isabel and Alex. Or I could always trade places with Maria so you two could be alone!”
"I guess it is true after all.”
“What’s true?”
“Women really do go insane during pregnancy.”
“Asshole!” Again she punched him in the arm and jerked away in a huff.
“Aww come on, Liz…you know you’re the only one I could ever want. I was just teasing you…promise. Besides, Michael’s already got his hands full with Maria…do you really think I want that kind of punishment?”
Liz was trying to stay angry, but it wasn’t working. Max was right, she was being irrational, and only Michael Guerin could handle someone like Maria. “Max, I’m so sorry. It’s just I’m really worried, kinda freaking out about everything, and my hormones are going wild.” She scooted over in the seat and laid her head on Max’s shoulder. “Forgive me?”
“You’re not playing fair.” Max teased.
“But you love me and forgive me anyway, right?” Liz lifted her head and stared into his beautiful amber eyes.
Max smiled at her with so much love in his heart. “Was there ever any doubt?”
Liz laid her head back down and listened to the soothing sound of Max breathing. Their conversation could wait.
~*~*~*~*~
“I said don’t touch the radio!” Michael screeched for the tenth time.
Maria rolled her eyes and continued to flip through the stations. “Chill out, Spaceboy. I’m just trying to find something that won’t make my brain bleed.”
“So now something is wrong with my choice of music?”
“Yes, Michael. Something is definitely wrong with this music.” Maria replied sarcastically.
“Well did you ever think I might like this kind of music?” Michael asked growing more and more irritated.
“Yes, it did. Thankfully I don’t like you for your taste in music.”
“Well maybe I don’t care what you think.”
“Fine, Michael. You don’t have to care what I think, but at least consider this…listening to this crap is bound to make you sterile.”
“Maybe I want to be sterile.” Michael retorted.
“Hallelujah! Michael Guerin has decided to protect the human race and notspread his seed!”
“You know something,” Michael punched the dial on the radio until he found his kind of music, “I don’t like you right now.”
“Ditto! I don’t like you either!”
Michael looked over at Maria, sitting agitated in the front seat, and felt his pulse speed up rapidly. “Wow. You look really hot when you’re angry.”
Hiding her smile Maria turned back to face Michael. “You look kind of hot yourself, Spaceboy.”
“Think we’ll be stopping for the night anytime soon?”
“God I hope so.” Maria couldn’t wait to get her hands on Michael Guerin again!
~*~*~*~*~
Alex turned around in his seat to look at the two vehicles following closely behind them, and then faced forward again. “I can’t believe Michael’s survived so long with Maria in the truck.”
Isabel glanced in her rearview mirror and smiled. “Yeah, she is something of an acquired taste, but as pigheaded as Michael seems…they’re suited perfectly for one another.”
“Maria’s always been difficult…every since we were kids, but you know something?”
“What?”
“I’ve never seen her look happier than she does with Michael. Maria needs to be challenged by someone who won’t take her crap…Michael’s perfect for her.”
Isabel smiled again and snuck a quick glance in Alex’s direction. “I couldn’t agree more.”
“Isabel?”
“Yes?”
Alex turned sideways so he was facing Isabel. He wanted to see her reaction to the questions he had for her. “What happens when we get back to Roswell?” Alex saw the look of sadness cross her face and immediately regretted asking the question.
“I don’t know, Alex. I know Liz’s parents are going to furious. Not to mention our own parents because we all ran away. Then there’s the little issue about where to put Max and Michael…I just don’t know.” Isabel said frustrated.
Alex shook his head before clarifying his question. “Those are all very valid points and I know things are going to get really complicated, but…”
“But what, Alex?”
“Well…I was kind of talking about you and me.” Alex waited to see her tense up and feel awkward since he knew she had to blow him off, but instead she smiled.
“I guess that all depends on us. I know you’ve always thought I was a snob, and I’m sure your friends will give you a hard time about dating me…but I hope you’ll ignore them.”
“Me? Ignore them? You mean you think I wouldn’t want to be seen with you?” Alex suddenly felt like he was lost in an alternate universe.
“You don’t have to be sweet just to spare my feelings. Truth is, I’d rather you tell me now than to wait until we get home and then dump me.” Isabel had been dreading this moment for days. She’d been afraid that once they got home everything would go back to business as usual, and now Alex was trying to break it to her gently.
“Isabel, I don’t think you understand.”
“Yes, I do…I just hoped things would be different.” She swore to herself as she felt a single tear roll down her cheek.
“I’m stuck in the Twilight Zone.” Alex mumbled.
“Excuse me?”
“Ok, you’ve got everything wrong here. Now, I want you to take a step backwards and look at the whole picture. You, Isabel Collins, Roswell’s very own beauty queen, and then me…Alex Whitman, band geek and generally a nobody.”
“Alex…you can’t possibly think that’s how I feel after everything we’ve been through this week. After everything I’ve told you about myself, and everything you’ve witnessed, do you honestly think I’d run back to my lonely, boring, pitiful existence?”
“Well, you…you know…you were kind of…well popular, so I just assumed…”
“You assumed wrong then. I’m not only where I want to be, but I’m with the only person I ever wanted to be with.”
“Really?” Alex asked in total amazement.
“Really, Alex. I know now…you’re the one for me.” Now Isabel’s tears slid down both cheeks but she didn’t care. Finally, she had the life she’d always wanted.
~*~*~*~*~
Liz sat up straight once again, knowing she couldn’t put this off any longer. “Max, we still have to talk…about things.”
“I know. I was just enjoying the feeling of you next to me, but you’re right…we need to figure some things out. Where do you want to start?”
Liz bit her bottom lip trying to figure out where they should start. “I guess I need to know more about you first. Where you come from? Why are you here? How do you know for certain you were in the crash? Will you ever leave me to return home to your own planet? That kind of stuff.”
“Good questions…really. Let’s see. Hmm…we don’t really know where or why we’re here. We came out of incubation pods and it was just us…no explanation. We were too young to even remember how we got there.”
“Then how do you know you were in the crash?”
“She told us.” Max stated simply.
“She who?”
“When we were in school our teacher assigned one of those family tree assignments, but excused me and Michael because she knew we were adopted. Still, we were both curious. We started asking questions about how we were found and where, but the only thing we found out is that we were both adopted out of Roswell. So, when we got older we went there to find out anything we could and that’s when we met this woman.”
“A woman?”
“Yep. It was really weird, because she said she’d been waiting for us. She told us about the crash and how it was covered up. She said she never believed the cover-up for a second. She’d been out in the dessert during the crash and knew what she’d seen.”
“Ok, but that doesn’t explain why she was waiting for you.”
“And that’s exactly what I told her. So she told us about naked orphans roaming in the dessert several years later, and how she just knew we’d come out of the crash. She’d been researching quietly for years, and had even found the pods. She took us to them and told us what little she’d found out.” Max remembered the day as if it had been yesterday.
“Which was?” Liz asked eagerly. She was completely fascinated by the whole situation.
“Just about the crash site and how she’d stumbled upon the pods. She didn’t know much because of the government, but the government knew nothing about the pods or where they were located.”
“Why didn’t she tell you more?”
“Well, at the time she told us everything she knew. Then, a year later, probably about two years ago, she called me and said she had more information for us, but we had to come to her.”
“What happened?” Liz questioned, sitting on the edge of her seat.
“I got Michael and we went back to Roswell, but we were too late. She died of a stroke just before we got there.” Max could feel the pain haunting him again. She’d been the only link to their past and who they were, but mostly…she’d been a great woman.
“I’m sorry, Max. I didn’t mean to bring it all back up for you.” Liz couldn’t imagine what it was like for Max, Michael, and Isabel not knowing who they were.
“It’s ok, Liz. You needed to know.”
“What was her name?” Where did that come from?
“Huh?”
“I don’t know…I just wondered what her name was.”
“Ok. Well, we only knew her first name. It was Claudia.”
“What?”
“Her name…it was Claudia.”
Oh my God! “You’re sure?”
“Of course I’m sure. Liz, what’s wrong? You look pale. Is the baby ok?”
“The baby’s fine.” It all made sense now. Her immediate attraction to Max. The ability to just accept that aliens walked among us. Everything! “Max…”
“Yeah?”
“I think you met my grandmother.”
“Liz, you know that can’t be.”
“Max, my grandma used to tell me wild stories…your kind of stories.”
“If she lived in Roswell that makes sense, Liz.”
“No, Max. She told me the whole story you just told me…word for word.”
“Come on, Liz…it’s just not possible.”
Liz took a deep breath and tried desperately to steady her pulse. “Max, my Grandma Claudia died from a stroke two years ago. One of the last things she ever said to me was that my destiny was coming. She said he would be here soon. Max…I think she meant you.”
Hey everyone :) I'm back! Thank you for your patience and all of the great feedback! Also, a special thank you to Amy for reading this before I posted so I would know if it was crap :wink: I love you, Amy!!! Ok, on to it...
CHAPTER 27
Jim walked into the supermarket to pick up something for dinner. The last week had been so hectic that he’d had no time to go shopping. As he walked down the frozen foods section he noticed the all too familiar blonde standing by the ice cream. “Well, well…what brings you here this evening, Miss Harding?”
Tess rolled her eyes and huffed as she looked at the Sheriff. “Hello, Sheriff Valenti.” She looked away and pretended to concentrate on the ice cream selections in front of her.
“I hear you’ve been trying to convince Aaron that you’re some kind of saint.” He said in a mocking tone. “Guess you couldn’t fool my son anymore, so you moved onto the next poor bastard.”
Tess slammed the door to the cooler and turned to face Jim with fire in her eyes. “I don’t really care what you think of me, Sheriff. It’s obvious you’ve never had a high opinion of me, so why should I give a damn what you think now?”
“Well, let’s see…you no longer have my son roped in as your meal ticket, even if the baby does turn out to be his, and I practically raised Aaron, so he’s not as naïve as you’d like to believe. As a matter of fact, I wonder if either one of my boys had anything to do with your current condition.” Jim had been hearing all kinds of rumors lately, and while he wasn’t normally one to pay attention to gossip, there was a ringing of truth in some of the things he’d heard.
Tess felt the chill all the way down to her bones. She’d planned everything so carefully, and now Jim Valenti was determined to ruin everything she’d worked for. “How dare you! You don’t know anything about me, so you have no right to judge me!”
“You see that’s where you’re wrong, Miss Harding. I know a lot more about you than you think. You’re so much like your mother was…I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.”
“Wh-what’s that supposed to mean?”
“I think you should have a long talk with your father…a history lesson you might say. I’m almost certain he’s the one that put you up to all of this…wouldn’t you like to know why?”
“You’re lying. You’re just trying to make me nervous. I don’t believe a word you say.”
“That’s your choice…believe me, don’t believe me, but I see the doubt in your eyes, Tess. Like I said, I knew your mother quite well, and I know your father more than I’d like to. You want answers? He’s got them. Good evening, Miss Harding.” Jim strolled past her and finished his shopping. If she were half as smart as she thought she was, she’d go to her father and demand answers. Then again, Ed Harding wasn’t likely to be forthcoming with any information. After all, he’d had years to plan his revenge.
~*~*~*~*~
“Thanks for the ride, man.” Kyle said as he approached Aaron’s truck.
Aaron stood there and watched as Kyle threw his bag in the back and climbed into the cab of his truck. He paused as he started to open the door, but then climbed in. He no longer knew how to make small talk with his former best friend, so he just listened as Kyle babbled away. Aaron knew in the long run Kyle had done him a favor, but he’d still betrayed him. Aaron held so much resentment and anger toward Kyle that it made the short trip back to Roswell very awkward.
Kyle had been talking for most of the ride home with only an occasional nod from Aaron to show he was even listening. Kyle deserved this. He knew that, but he wanted so much to make things up to Aaron, and possibly restore some of what used to be there. “I know you can’t forgive me.” Kyle finally said with his head hung low.
Aaron had been ignoring Kyle, but his last statement brought Aaron back to the moment. “What?”
It was a long shot, Kyle knew that, but he had to try. “I know why you can’t forgive me and I accept that. I’d hoped we could mend things between us, but I didn’t expect anything from you.”
“Kyle…” Aaron started to speak, but he had nothing to say.
“I know I’m sorry isn’t good enough, and I know I’ve hurt everyone I ever cared about. I wish I had some great explanation for what I did, but I don’t. I screwed up, man. I seriously screwed up, and there’s no way for me to take any of it back. I know it doesn’t help, but I’ve lost everything, Aaron. I’ve lost Liz. I’ve lost you. I’ve even lost the respect from my father. I know that doesn’t seem like enough right now, but I thought if you knew I was paying for my mistakes you might find some comfort in that.”
Aaron sat there for a few minutes, occasionally shooting a glance in Kyle’s direction, but he still held his head low and was now silent. “I don’t hate you, Kyle…” Aaron started, and then stopped to find the words he was looking for. “For so long you were like a brother to me, not a best friend, but a brother, so when you betrayed me it hurt worse than I ever thought possible. I know you didn’t know about Tess and me, and I’ve tried to find some peace in that, but I can’t. Regardless of whether or not you knew about us, you had an amazing girlfriend that you didn’t hesitate to betray. So, I know even if you’d known about Tess and me…you would’ve done what you wanted to anyway. That’s what I can’t forgive. You only thought about what you wanted and what you needed and to hell with everyone else.”
Kyle knew he was right. He had no way to defend himself, because everything Aaron had said was true. “You’re right…I only thought about myself. Like I said before, I know it’s not enough, but I’m really sorry.”
Aaron could hear the sincerity in Kyle’s voice. It may not be enough, but it was a start.
“Where are we?” Maria asked as they walked into the small diner.
“Not really sure,” Alex stated as he looked at the map, “somewhere outside of Bakersfield.”
“Well this place is a dump.” Maria looked around. Even the other customers were scary looking. “Do you people have any clue what kind of diseases are lurking around in a place like this?”
“Maria, we’re hungry. Could you just sit down and shut up?” Alex didn’t know how Michael had lasted three hours without killing her. They’d only been stopped for ten minutes and she was already driving him crazy.
“But what about the germs in the booth? I don’t…”
“Maria, sit down!” This time it was everyone, including Max and Liz.
“Fine, but when we’re all on our death beds, don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Reluctantly, Maria sat down.
After a few minutes a bubbly, blonde waitress strolled over their way. “Hi, I’m Candy. What can I get y’all to drink?”
Maria, Liz, and Isabel all looked at each other, then to their men, and back to Candy. “Of course your name would be Candy.” Maria said sarcastically.
“Yeah, I’ll bet it’s Cotton Candy.” Isabel replied as she elbowed Alex in the stomach.
“Or Candy Cane.” Liz said under her breath as she watched all three of the guys stare at Candy’s store bought breasts.
“I think…well you have…I mean…Coke would be…well if you have Cherry Coke…” Max was trying to form a complete sentence, but like Michael and Alex, he was busy shoving his foot in his mouth.
“I think what Max meant to say,” Liz shot an angry glare at him, “is that we’d like three Cherry Cokes, and three iced teas. Is that ok with everyone?” Everyone nodded and Candy went on her way.
“I can’t believe you three! Not a single piece of her isn’t store bought, and your girlfriends happen to be sitting right here!” Isabel exclaimed.
“Girlfriend? I don’t have a girlfriend.” Michael responded in a panicked tone.
“Excuse me, Spaceboy? What do you call me?”
It was a trick question, he knew it. What’s the right answer? What’s the right answer? “Well, I just meant we haven’t exactly…you know…defined…what we are.”
“Really? Ok, so every time you’ve kissed me what did you think I was?” Maria questioned.
Shut up, Michael! Shut up, Michael! Both Alex and Max were willing Michael to keep his mouth shut, but it was impossible…they knew he would speak.
“Just a chick I’ve been hooking up with.” Michael stated innocently, not seeing his life flashing before his very eyes.
Max kicked Michael under the table from one side, as Alex nailed him in the shin from another side. They both knew Michael’s stupidity would get them all in trouble.
“A chick?” Liz asked angrily. “Michael, didn’t we warn you about referring to us as chicks again?”
“Hey, it’s not my fault that’s what you are.”
Max grabbed Liz by the arm just as she was about to take a swing at Michael. “Ok, easy does it. Why don’t we all figure out what we want to eat…we’ve got some things to talk about.”
Everyone agreed and when Candy returned to their table they placed their orders quickly. All of the men stared safely at the table, and then sent her on her way. Once she was out of earshot Max spoke up again.
“Something’s come up and I think we all need to talk about it.” Max said in a hushed tone.
“What’s going on, Max?” Alex asked, eager to change the subject from Candy.
“Liz and I were talking about where we came from and why we’re here, you know…stuff, and something interesting came out.”
“Maxwell, could you just spit it out already?” Michael had never been one to beat around the bush.
“It’s about my grandma.” Liz started.
“Aww gee…isn’t that sweet.” Michael said rather obnoxiously as he chewed on a straw. “Homemade cookies and apple pie…bet it makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.”
“Michael, do you have to be such a total ass?” Isabel asked.
“Yeah, maybe I do. I don’t get why Liz’s grandmother is of any importance to us.”
“But she is, Michael.” Max interjected. “Liz’s grandmother is really important.”
Maria sat there dumbfounded. She’d loved Liz’s grandmother, but even she didn’t understand what it had to do with any of them. “Ok…I’m lost.”
“Real shocker.” Michael mumbled under his breath.
Maria elbowed him in the ribs and then finished what she’d been trying to say. “I mean don’t get me wrong, I loved Grandma Claudia, but what does that have to do with…” Maria stopped as Candy approached the table with their food. Maria blurted out the first thing that popped into her mind. “Czechoslovakians?”
“Czechoslovakians?” Alex asked, puzzled.
Maria shot a quick glance at the approaching waitress and then back to Alex. “Got it?”
Alex looked up and then quickly back down. “Right, but what does it have to do with Grandma Claudia? She wasn’t Czechoslovakian.”
“Hey, Max and me used to know a Claudia…go figure.” Michael glanced around the table for Tabasco sauce, and then frowned when he realized a place like this wouldn’t carry the essentials. He picked up his burger and took a bite anyway, only half paying attention to the conversation.
“Liz’s Grandma Claudia is our Claudia.” Max stated after Candy walked away.
Michael almost choked on his burger when Max’s statement finally registered in his head. “That’s impossible, Maxwell. You’re just reaching now.” He set his burger down and just stared at it.
Max shook his head, “I’m not reaching, Michael, and you know as well as I do that nothing’s impossible.”
“Ok,” Maria threw both hands in the air since obviously they weren’t getting anywhere, “instead of arguing whether or not it’s possible, why don’t you just explain what you’re talking about.”
“Fine,” Max said, then smiled at Liz, “do you want to tell them or should I?”
Liz smiled back at him. She liked the idea of Max being her destiny…it made her life make sense. “Why don’t you tell them what you know, then I’ll fill them in with what I know.”
Max nodded in agreement, and then spent the next several minutes telling everyone about how he and Michael had come to know Claudia Parker in the first place. He told them about his last conversation with Claudia, and then Liz picked up where he left off. She talked about her last few days with her grandma and then told the group about their last conversation.
“I just thought it was her wish for me in the future…I never thought for a second that she might be serious.” Liz stated as she wiped a tear off her cheek. It wasn’t until she began telling everyone else about those last few days that she realized how much she’d missed Grandma Claudia. Somehow, she’d locked her away in her heart and hadn’t talked about her since.
Maria scooted over to Liz and wrapped her arms around her best friend. “Liz, you have no idea how long Alex and I have been waiting to hear you open up about her. After she died you just closed up. You changed so much…neither one of us knew what to do.”
Alex cleared his throat, causing everyone to look at him. “Sorry…I just…I don’t know…never mind.”
Isabel could tell by the expression on his face that there was something he desperately wanted to say, but understood that he was probably embarrassed to open up in front of everyone.
“No, Alex…if you’ve got something to say then say it.” Maria demanded. They’d spent hours upon hours discussing this, so he wasn’t about to clam up on her now.
Alex pushed his plate away and took a deep breath. “It’s just…Maria’s right. You changed so much, Liz, and you wouldn’t talk to anyone. You left the room at the slightest mention of Grandma Claudia, and you attached yourself to that walking baboon. It’s only been in these last few days that we’ve finally seen the real Liz Parker again. I know what your grandma said seems crazy, but knowing her as well as we did, and knowing that things can be unexplainable…I just can’t help but think it’s all true. I mean why Opal Cliff, Liz? What made you go there? And then this whirlwind romance with Max, no offense, what made you fall so hard, so fast? Maybe it was your destiny.”
“You know this all sounds crazy, right?” Michael said, while looking around at the people surrounding him.
“Why is it crazy?” Isabel asked.
“Because she’s human! She’s not like us.” Michael stated.
“Hey, Michael…would you like to say that a little louder? I don’t think everyone in here heard you.” Max said sarcastically.
“Look, I’m sorry, but I think this is just craziness. You’re all babbling on about the ramblings of an old woman who’s not even here anymore to explain what she meant. I think you all want to believe it, so you’re twisting everything she said to fit what you want to believe.” Michael pushed his plate back and threw his crumbled napkin on the table. “I’m done, so I’ll be waiting outside when you’re ready to leave.” Michael stood up and stormed out of the diner.
“Well, that proves we’re on to something.” Max said matter of factly.
“Why?” Alex questioned.
“Because that’s exactly how Michael reacts every time we come closer to learning who we are. He isolates himself until he can figure out what’s going on.” Max looked out the window at Michael standing in the parking lot. “Yep…he believes it might be true.”
“So, what do we do now, Max?” Isabel asked in a mumbled tone.
“We get to Roswell and finish putting all the pieces together.”
Riverdog stopped smoking his pipe and set it down. Slowly he stood up and walked out into the cool, crisp night. The time had come, he could feel it. He’d always known this day would come. Now it was time to finish the promise he’d made many years before. He owed Claudia Parker that much. The visitors were on their way, and he had the answers they would seek. He walked back to his porch, sat down, and picked up his pipe. “Soon my work will be finished.”
He rocked in his chair as he watched the night sky. The stars meant so much more to him now than they had in his younger years. He knew of the worlds that existed well beyond his reach, because he’d witnessed their magnificence. His life had forever been changed out in the dessert in 1947. Now there was no turning back.
Hey everyone :lol: Sorry this chapter is late, but real life has had me chained up for days :wink: This is kind of a transition chapter...you know, getting all the players in place, but I promise the next chapter will start to answer many questions! I hope you're all enjoying this story and I want to thank you all for the wonderful feedback! I don't have an outline for this fic, so I just go wherever my muse decides to take me! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy...
CHAPTER 28
Jeff trotted down the steps and into the kitchen of the Crashdown Café. It was only five o’ clock in the morning, but on Sundays the morning rush usually started early. He began his day as usual, following the same routine he’d had for the better part of fifteen years. Only today, things weren’t normal. On Sundays Liz had always awakened early to lend him a hand. It was their personal time, but today his Lizzie wasn’t here. Deep inside, he feared she would never be here again. He walked out of the kitchen and into the café, taking a seat in Lizzie’s favorite booth. Nothing felt the same now. His baby girl was gone…how was he supposed to get past that? Tomorrow is her eighteenth birthday…the first birthday I’ve ever missed.
Nancy looked through the small hole in the door that led to the café and saw her husband. He looked tired, and overwhelmed, but most of all he looked sad. Neither one of them had expected something like this could ever happen, so neither one really knew how to deal with it. Nancy was trying so hard to be the rock right now, for Jeff’s sake, but inside she felt like she was dying too. Sheriff Valenti had tried to keep them both positive, but nothing about this situation seemed positive. Their baby girl had run away, pregnant and all alone, and now she was married to a stranger neither one of them had ever heard about. From the time they’d brought her home, they’d both fantasized about her wedding day. How beautiful she’d look in her gown, the flowers surrounding them, the reception full of friends and family, and standing in the bride room with her, telling her no woman had ever looked more beautiful. Now those hopes and dreams were gone. Slowly, Nancy pushed the door open.
“Thought you could use some help.”
Jeff spun around at the sound of her voice. He’d thought he was alone, but as he noticed the glistening of tears in Nancy’s eyes, he could tell she’d been standing there for a while. It was obvious to him that her feelings mirrored his own. “When does this get any easier?”
Nancy walked over and took a seat across from him. “I don’t know.” They both sat there in an awkward silence, until Nancy finally spoke up again. “Tomorrow’s her birthday. Her eighteenth birthday…did you ever think this is how we’d be celebrating?”
Jeff shook his head, and held back his own tears. “I thought it would be one of the happiest days of her life. I wanted so much to see her become an adult, so I fooled myself into thinking it would happen on that very day,” Jeff ran a hand through his hair, and then looked at his wife, “I guess she became an adult sooner than we realized. When did all of this happen, and how could we have missed it?”
“We both wanted her to be our baby girl forever…guess it just never works out the way you plan.” Nancy placed her hand on Jeff’s and the room fell silent again.
Jim hadn’t slept much the night before. From the timeline he’d calculated in his head, Liz should be home today. There were so many things to be discussed, and he knew the day would be difficult. All he hoped for was the chance to be in his grandchild’s life, but thanks to all of Kyle’s mistakes it was the one thing he might be denied. Then there was the matter of Liz’s new husband…it wasn’t like Liz to be so impulsive, so how had she managed to find someone and get married in a week? None of it mattered anymore, it was beyond his control now.
He placed his hand on the doorknob and turned it slowly, trying to make as little noise as possible. Kyle had come in late, and Jim had seen how exhausted he looked. Somehow, just in the few short days his son had been gone, Kyle looked different. He looked like he’d aged five years…he looked exhausted. Jim had wanted to talk to him and find out more details, but it hadn’t been the time. Looking at Kyle now, all balled up in his blanket, he looked like a helpless child again. Kyle was still snoring softly, so Jim closed the door. They would have plenty of time to iron out the details later. Right now, Kyle needed his rest.
Jim walked into his office, and went straight to the closet. He was certain it was still there; he hadn’t touched it in years. Quickly, he found the box he’d been looking for. Although he’d purposely gone in search of it, now he found it hard to open. He sat down at his desk and lifted the lid as if it would crumble at the slightest touch. There it was, right on top. He pulled the photo out and studied it. It was strange looking at the reflection of himself so many years ago, but that wasn’t what caught his eye. There she was…her blonde curly hair, those magnificent blue eyes, and award-winning smile. Even without the picture he could’ve remembered every curve of her face, and the dimple high on her left cheek when she smiled. She’d been breathtaking, and he’d thought she’d been his. Yes, Cynthia Mayes, soon to be Cynthia Harding, had fooled everyone…especially him.
~*~*~*~*~
“Would you please get your stinky feet out of my face for the hundredth time?” Michael was tired. He’d been driving non-stop for hours because Maxwell had insisted they not stop for the night. Why, he didn’t know, but the lack of sleep was making him cranky. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they’d stuck him with Maria again who absolutely refused to take shifts driving.
Maria yawned but did not open her eyes. “My feet do not stink.” She mumbled, barely awake.
“Fine, they don’t stink, but could you move them anyway?” He’d learned rather quickly that it was impossible to win an argument with Maria Deluca. Not because she was always right, but more because she was so irrational no one could keep up with her.
“You know,” Maria sat up and jerked her feet away from Michael, making sure to kick him in the stomach as she moved, “some people say chivalry is dead, and I’ve always argued that it wasn’t because of our dear, sweet Alex…but then I spend time with you and I realize it is dead.”
“Why, because I don’t want your…” Michael paused and chose his words carefully before finishing his sentence, “feet in my face?”
“That’s exactly what I’m talking about.” Maria huffed. She was completely awake now. “My feet were nowhere near your face, they were in your lap.”
“Well maybe if they didn’t…” I can’t win, why am I even bothering to try? “You’re absolutely right, Maria, so why don’t you go back to sleep?”
“No! You woke me up, and got me all upset, so now you have to deal with me!” Maria sat up straight and folded her arms across her chest.
“That’s it!” Michael put on his flashers and pulled off onto the shoulder of the road. Once the truck had come to a complete stop he jumped out. “I can’t take it anymore!”
Max and Liz had been following behind, so they were the first ones to pull over. A little further ahead, Alex had pulled over Isabel’s SUV and was walking toward Michael’s truck.
“What seems to be the problem?” Alex asked a little too cheerfully. He’d known it was only a matter of time before Maria would drive Michael completely insane, so he found this quite amusing.
Max thought something was wrong, so he jogged up to the truck in a mild panic. “Michael? What happened?”
“The woman is driving me crazy!” Michael paced back and forth mumbling under his breath.
Alex and Max looked at each other, and both tried to hide their smiles. Unfortunately, Alex wasn’t able to hold it very long, so he burst out into a fit of laughter.
Michael stormed up to Alex and started jabbing his finger into Alex’s chest. “Oh, so you think this is funny? Fine! You take her then! Let’s see how far you get before you’re ready to pitch her out the window!”
Michael was practically hysterical, so it made it damn near impossible to hide a smile, but Max did. “Michael, why don’t you just tell us what happened.”
“Her feet stink!”
“Her feet stink? That’s why we’re all pulled over on the side of the road at five o’clock in the morning?” Max growled.
“Well she moved them this way,” Michael tried to do a standing impression of Maria, “and then she twisted this way,” again Michael tried to impersonate Maria, “so I just couldn’t take it anymore.” Michael finished, knowing he sounded like a complete jackass.
“Yep, Maria’s such a stinker.” Alex said in a mocking tone.
“Alex!” While Max thought it was funny too, Alex wasn’t helping the situation. “Why don’t you just go back to Isabel and wait for us to be on our way?”
“Fine, but you take all the fun out of it.” Just as Alex turned around he saw Isabel approaching them, looking far from happy.
“What the hell is going on here? Do you people have any clue what time it is?” Isabel demanded, already tapping her foot on the ground.
“Well, you see…” Michael started.
“Michael, shut up. Do you really want to go there again?” Max glared directly at Michael, praying his lips would stop moving.
“Hey, why are we stopped?” Liz called out as she approached the others.
“Great, Michael. You woke them all up.” Max rubbed his face, trying to figure out a way to explain why Michael had stopped, without getting them all killed.
Maria climbed out of the truck, walked around to the driver side door, and leaned against the truck. “Yeah, Guerin…tell them all why we’re stopped.”
Michael looked around at all of the angry faces staring him down, and took a deep breath. “It’s nothing…why don’t we get back on the road?”
“No, you dragged all of us out here, so what’s the emergency?” Isabel was far from a morning person, especially when the only sleep she had gotten was cramped in a vehicle.
Michael could see his life flashing before his eyes. They might be equal when it came to gender, but he was fairly certain Alex and Max would take their women’s sides. “It was just a big misunderstanding…let’s get back on the road.”
“Maria! Alex! Look!” Liz called out to her best friends.
A moment later everyone was looking at the sign just off the road. Roswell 10 Miles
“We’re almost home.” Liz said excitedly as she hugged her friends.
Max turned and looked at Michael, who was clearly relieved. “I hope you know your life was just spared.”
“I know, Maxwell. Trust me…I know”
~*~*~*~*~
Jim strolled into the Crashdown Café for breakfast. It was still early, but he knew Jeff would be opening any minute. The door jingled as it closed behind him, causing him to smile. In times of great chaos, a little familiarity was comforting. Unfortunately, that comfort was short lived. Instead of the usual bustling sounds of the café, Jeff and Nancy were both sitting quietly in one of the booths. His heart went out to both of them, reminding him what it had been like during those first twenty-four hours after Kyle’s accident. The not knowing if your child was safe, or whether or not they’d ever come home again was a pain only a parent could understand. He wanted so much to tell them that Liz was on her way home, just to ease their pain a little, but he’d made Kyle a promise. If Jeff and Nancy knew she was coming home, they’d start preparing their defense right now. Liz wouldn’t stand a chance.
“Good morning, Jeff, Nancy.”
They both looked up and nodded, but neither made an effort to move. “Can I help you, Sheriff?” Jeff asked without meeting his eyes.
“Just thought I’d come in for breakfast…see how you two were holding up.”
“How do you think we’re doing, Sheriff?” Nancy asked angrily. She knew it might not be fair, but she blamed the Valenti’s for everything right now.
“Nancy!” Jeff snapped in response.
“It’s ok, Jeff…she has every right to be upset. If the tables were turned I’d be just as ready to blame the two of you. So you know, I don’t condone Kyle’s actions for a single moment, and as a father it’s hard to know your own son is the cause of so much grief.”
“I appreciate that, Jim.” Jeff had known Jim Valenti for many years, so he knew what a good man he was. Jeff was willing to see how much pain this entire situation had caused him too.
“So…any news?” Jim asked trying to bring up the subject as gently as possible.
“Not yet. Got an attorney friend out of Santa Fe looking into the different legal angles, but with Liz turning eighteen tomorrow…” Jeff’s voice cracked unintentionally, “well there’s really nothing we can do. So we’re just praying our Lizzy will come home.”
“Keep your chin up, Jeff…I know Liz and I have to believe she’ll be coming home soon.”
“I hope you’re right…what can I get you for breakfast?”
The two men sat there and continued to make small talk for the next few minutes, while Nancy excused herself and went back upstairs. Until her daughter was home safe she wasn’t about to pretend like everything was fine.
~*~*~*~*~
“Oh, Max.” Liz had been smiling for the last several minutes since the moment she’d seen the sign to Roswell. Until that moment, she hadn’t realized how much she’d missed home. “I really think you’re going to like Roswell. It’s a small town, so people are always gossiping, but they’re friendly too.”
“Liz,” Max didn’t know how to say this without bringing Liz down, “what are we going to do about your parents? I know you’re excited, and I don’t want to change that, but we need to think about how they’re gonna react to me.”
“Yeah…I’ve been thinking about that too. I know their initial reaction won’t be a good one, but we stick together, right? We’re a team?”
“Of course we are, but don’t expect them to welcome me with open arms.”
“I’m not…honestly…but I’m not a little girl anymore and they’re going to have to accept the decisions I’ve made.”
“So you still want them to believe we’re married?”
“Yes! Max, it’s the only way they’ll accept any of this. Alex, Maria, and Isabel have already promised to go along with it, so Michael’s the only one we have to worry about.”
Max smiled and brought Liz’s hand up to his lips. “Don’t worry…Michael won’t say a word. So, Mrs. Evans…you ready for this?”
Liz smiled, but then looked down. “I don’t think you can get ready for something like this. It’s ok though…as long as you’re by my side we can do this.”
“I know we can. Promise me one thing?”
“Anything, Max.”
“For now I think it would be wise to keep our guard up with Kyle. I know he was understanding when he came to Opal Cliff, but I’m not ready to trust him yet. He has a stake in this baby’s future, and I don’t want to underestimate him.”
“I won’t, Max, but I made it clear that we were over. You and this baby are my life now, Max, and nothing’s going to change that.” Liz leaned over and kissed Max’s cheek. As she faced forward again, the café came into sight.
~*~*~*~*~
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Was Michael’s reaction when the café came into view.
“Nope, Spaceboy. The Crashdown Café is the town’s monument to aliens. Well, it and the UFO Center across the street.”
“I can’t believe this! You know I do have some dignity left.”
“Hey, at least Mr. P is always hiring, so you should be able to get a job pretty quickly.” Maria laughed when she saw the mortification cross Michael’s face. “Cheer up…greasy food awaits.”
“Great.” Michael mumbled. He was officially in hell.
~*~*~*~*~
The three vehicles pulled up in front of the Crashdown Café and parked in a row. Alex was the first one out stretching his legs, followed by Maria. Isabel hung back for a minute…suddenly the town seemed so different to her. Max climbed out of his car and walked around to help Liz out. The second the door opened she smiled and took his hand. Michael was the only one that hadn’t gotten out of his vehicle, so everyone stopped and watched as Maria went to him.
“Get out of the damn truck, Spaceboy, or so help me God I’ll kill you.”
Surprisingly, he climbed out of his truck and took Maria’s hand instantly, intertwining their fingers together. Maria almost melted right there, but she held herself together and walked up to the others. “You sure you’re ready for this, Chica?”
Liz took a deep breath hoping to calm her nerves, but it didn’t help. “It doesn’t matter if I’m ready, Maria…it’s time.”
Together the six of them walked up to the double doors, which led into the café. There was no turning back now and they all knew it. Max reached forward and pulled open the door allowing Liz to walk in first. Everyone else followed, but then stopped just inside the door.
Jeff and Jim both looked up at the same time. “Lizzy?” Jeff whispered.
“Hi, Dad…I’m home.” Liz said quietly, barely able to find her voice.
Jeff leapt over the counter and embraced his daughter. “My Lizzy’s come home!”
Nancy heard the commotion from upstairs and came running down. “Jeff, what’s…” She saw Liz and didn’t hesitate before running to her. “My baby!”
Everyone stood back, watching the sweet reunion until Liz pulled away. “Mom, Dad,” she reached back and took Max’s hand into hers, pulling him forward, “this is Max Evans…my husband.”
Hey, sorry I'm late. My son was kind enough to pass on his ear infection so it's been a long week :roll: Thank you all for the amazing feedback and I hope you enjoy the chapter!!!
CHAPTER 29
Jeff was so overwhelmed with joy when Liz walked into the café, that he’d forgotten about this mystery man that was now her husband. He stood there, speechless and praying it wasn’t true. Jim had already broken the news to him and Nancy a few days before, but he’d been holding out hope that it was all a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, reality was standing right in front of him. Lizzy, his baby girl, was not only going to have a child of her own, but now she was also a wife.
“Dad? Say something…please?” Liz pleaded with him. She’d expected shock and even disappointment, but she’d never expected silence. Even her mother had taken a step back away from her. “Mom?”
Max could feel Liz’s pain, and it was the one thing he couldn’t bear. He released Liz’s hand and stepped forward to meet Jeff Parker face to face. “Mr. Parker, I’m Max Evans. I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about you…I’m just sorry we had to meet under such awkward circumstances.” Max extended a hand out toward Jeff, but Jeff just stared at it as if it were a snake.
Jim stood there, watching the scene unfold before him, and realized someone had to say something. “Liz, I’m so happy to see you back home safely.” He stepped forward and kissed her cheek. “You look absolutely radiant.”
“Thank you, Sheriff.” Liz whispered, trying to fight back tears.
Jim nodded and then looked past Liz to where the others were standing. “Well, well, if it isn’t the rescue team. I know several people that are going to be happy to see you kids again.” He said, indicating Alex, Maria, and Isabel.
“Tell me the truth, Sheriff…is my mom gonna kill me?” Maria said absolutely panicked. “You know murder is against the law, so if she’s gonna kill me it’s your job to protect me!”
“Well, Maria…you know your mom…if you think I’m stepping in then you’ve been sniffing way too much of your mother’s products.” Jim said teasingly, trying to lighten the mood. Jeff, Nancy, Liz, and this Max Evans kid were all still standing silent and still, so Jim decided it would be best to give them some time alone. “Come on, kids…I’ll drive you home. Your parents are worried sick and I think the Parkers would like to speak to their daughter right now.”
Maria looked at Alex, Isabel, and Michael and shook her head. They didn’t belong here right now, and truthfully none of them wanted to be here right now. Maria crossed over to Liz and gave her a quick hug. “I’m only a phone call away. I love you.”
Liz kept her eyes locked on her father, but spoke to Maria. “I know…thank you, Maria…for everything.”
Maria smiled and patted Liz’s cheek. Alex winked at Liz to let her know he was always around for moral support. Isabel just waved as the Sheriff ushered them out the door. Once outside he finally noticed an extra body.
“So…who’s this, Maria? Please don’t tell me you ran off and got married too?” The last thing Jim needed right now was for Amy to be hysterical, especially since he knew there would already be fireworks exploding at home.
“You’re kidding right?”
“God I hope so.” Jim replied.
“Me? Married? No! This is Spa…Michael. This is Michael. He’s Max’s best friend. You know guys, where one goes…” Maria stopped before she said something she’d regret. She was nervous and she always babbled when she was nervous.
“Ok…well let’s get you three home and I’ll help Michael find a place to stay for tonight, ok?”
They all nodded in agreement, and then took one last glance back at the café, each of them silently saying a prayer that everything would work out in the end.
Jeff and Nancy continued to stare in silence until they were alone with Liz and Max. Nancy didn’t know what to say, so Jeff started. “Lizzy…I don’t know what the hell you were thinking, but this ends right here. First thing tomorrow we’re having this marriage annulled and Max here is heading back to wherever the hell he came from.” Jeff was so angry that his hands were shaking.
“Dad, that’s not…”
“Quiet, Lizzy. I think you’ve caused your mother and I enough grief already.”
“Mr. Evans, I know this…”
“You don’t know shit, son! You waltz in here and the two of you announce that you’re married…you don’t have the foggiest idea how this feels, so don’t you dare say I know!” All Jeff wanted was five minutes alone with this kid!
“Daddy, you’re being unreasonable!” Liz jumped in front of Max when she noticed her father’s clenched fists.
Unreasonable! My baby girl just takes off with not a single word to either one of her parents. Then her friends disappear because they go chasing after her, and if that’s not bad enough we have to hear, from the sheriff no less, that she’s not only pregnant, but married too! Now, do you really want to talk to me about being reasonable?” Jeff’s voice was growing louder and louder each time he opened his mouth.
Nancy reached over and tugged on her husband’s arm…this was getting them nowhere. “Jeff, why don’t we all sit down and try to discuss this rationally?”
Jeff jerked his arm away and pointed a finger at Max. “No, we have nothing to discuss. We’re having this marriage annulled and Mr. Smooth here is gonna take a hike! End of discussion!”
“No, Daddy…it’s not.” Liz had to be strong. In less than twenty-four hours she would officially be an adult, and in less than eight months she was going to be a mother…it was time for her father to finally listen to her. “I know I’ve always been your perfect little girl…straight A’s, Science awards, never rebellious, but I made a mistake, Daddy…a big one. I know you want to fix this and make everything go away, but it’s just not that simple. Getting rid of Max won’t solve anything, and if Max goes…I go. It’s not what you wanted to hear, but it’s just the way things are.” Liz could feel her hands shaking. In eighteen years she’d never talked back to her father.
“That’s where you’re wrong! This isn’t how it’s gonna be. As long as you live under…”
“Jeff!” Nancy interrupted. The whole situation was getting completely out of hand.
Liz felt the tears forming in her eyes, but she knew she had to stay strong. “Fine, Daddy. If that’s the way you want it, I’ll just go pack my things.” Liz started to walk past her father, but he grabbed her arm.
“The hell you will!” Jeff insisted.
Now Liz was getting angry too. “You seem to have forgotten that as of tomorrow I’m an adult, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me. I didn’t want it this way…you made it this way.” She tried to break free from his grasp, but he held on tighter. “Let go of me!”
“You’re not going anywhere!”
Max couldn’t stand by and just watch things deteriorate any longer. He jumped in front of Jeff and pulled Liz’s arm free. “With all due respect, Mr. Parker, Liz is my wife and my responsibility now. If you’ve got something to say, then say it, but don’t you dare touch her again.” Max didn’t raise his voice at all, but his tone was warning enough.
“Excuse me? That happens to be my daughter!”
“That’s right, she is, but have you asked her once, since the moment we walked in, how she was doing? No. Your daughter is in a delicate position right now, carrying your grandchild, and yet all you want to do is get rid of me. I know this isn’t what you wanted for your daughter, but it’s done. This is how things are, and I refuse to stand by and watch someone, even her own father, put her or the baby in any danger. I love her and I will protect her with everything I am…even if it means protecting her from you.”
Nancy stood back, her mouth open wide in shock. It had been years since she’d seen Jeff so angry, and she’d never seen anyone stand up to him like that. Although the situation wasn’t ideal…Nancy realized she liked this kid. After a couple of minutes of Max and Jeff squaring off, neither willing to bend an inch, Nancy intervened. “He’s right.”
“Thank you, honey…I am right!”
Nancy shook her head and prepared for the storm she knew was coming. “I meant Max. He’s right, Jeff. What’s done is done, and right now Liz’s health should be our main concern.”
“But…”
“But nothing. Jeff, not even an hour ago you wanted nothing more than to have your daughter safe at home…well she’s home and fighting isn’t going to solve anything.” Nancy turned away from her husband and faced her daughter. “Baby, are you ok? You look a little tired.”
Liz finally felt a little relieved. “I’m fine, Mom…just exhausted. I’ve had some minor cramping, so I need to rest.”
“Ok, why don’t you and Max head upstairs and lie down for a little bit. You both look like you could use a nap. If you need anything, I’ll be here.”
“Thanks, Mom.” Liz wrapped her arms around her mother, glad to feel the safety of her arms again. She pulled back and smiled at her mom. “We should be up in time for the lunch rush. I love you.”
Jeff watched as Max picked up their bags and started toward the door that led upstairs. “Hold it! Not one more step! You two aren’t sharing a room…I forbid it!”
“Jeff,” Nancy said calmly, “she’s already pregnant…what damage could he do now?”
“But…”
“Go ahead you two. Get some rest.” Nancy watched as Max and Liz disappeared through the door and then turned back to face her husband. “Jeff? What are you doing?”
“What do you mean? I’m being a father.”
Nancy pulled him over to a booth and made him sit down. “Jeff, I know you’re upset. I am too.”
“Doesn’t seem like it. You like him, don’t you? I can tell…you like the little bastard that stole my daughter!”
Our daughter, and yes…I do. I see a young man willing to take on a young wife who is pregnant with someone else’s baby, and he seems to genuinely care about her well being.”
Jeff shook his head no. “I can read people, Nancy, and I’m telling you something’s off about this kid. Didn’t he seem twitchy to you?”
“No…as a matter of fact, he reminded me of you twenty years ago.” She could still see the anger on her husband’s face, but one way or another he was going to have to give a little on this one. “He loves our daughter, Jeff. Would you rather it be Kyle?”
“Hell no!” Jeff proclaimed.
“That’s what I thought.” Nancy stood up, pulling Jeff to his feet with her. “Then I guess you’ll have to take bachelor number two.”
“Do I have to accept any of them?” Jeff said, pouting.
“What do you think?” Nancy grinned and disappeared into the kitchen.
“Dammit!” Jeff huffed, and then went into the kitchen to warm up the grill. In less than an hour his entire world had been turned upside down. There was something off about Max Evans and he was going to find it.
“Sheriff, I really don’t want to go home.” Maria saw the kitchen light on and just knew her mother was waiting for her. Somehow, Amy Deluca knew her daughter was home.
“Maria, we’ve dropped everyone else off…I’m afraid it’s your turn.”
“But she’s gonna kill me. Dead! Murdered!”
“Drama queen.” Michael mumbled from the back seat.
Maria turned around to glare at him. “I am not! You don’t know my mother. I can hear her voice already. Maria Ann Deluca! That’s where she’ll start and then the satanic rituals will begin! You’ve heard of hell…fire and brimstone…well that’s a cake walk compared to the wrath of Amy Deluca!”
“She can’t be that bad. Besides, I’d like to meet her.” Michael confessed.
“Why would you want to do something like that?” Maria asked hysterically.
Michael shook his head. “Maria, she can’t be that bad, and since I’m your boyfriend you can’t hide me forever.”
“Great! Now you want to act like a boyfriend! I thought I was just a chick?” Maria was growing irritated…she couldn’t keep up with Michael Guerin’s mood swings.
“You are a chick,” he replied with a grin, “but you’re my chick.”
“Just promise me the two of you didn’t get married.” Jim interrupted.
“God no! I’m not crazy!” Maria said defensively.
Jim smiled and removed the keys from the ignition. “Well, the jury’s still out on that one, but at least now you have some bargaining room.”
“What kind of bargaining room?” Maria inquired.
“Well, the way I see it, you’re not married and you’re not pregnant…maybe she’ll go easy on you.”
“Ok, I know they say love is blind, but I never believed it until this exact moment. Sorry, Sheriff, but you’re delusional.”
“I might be…but I’m not the one in the doghouse.” Jim smiled as he climbed out of his Blazer.
“Come on, Maria…I’ll be there with you.” Michael laid a hand on her shoulder.
“Fine…I’ll go. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Maria and Michael both climbed out of the Blazer and headed for the front door. “Last chance to run.”
“Maria.” Michael growled. He’d been driving for what seemed like forever, so all he wanted right now was a bed.
Maria extended a hand out to turn the knob, but the door flew open before she had the chance. “Maria Ann Deluca! Where the hell have you been?”
“Hi, Mom.”
“Don’t ‘hi mom’ me…you’ve got some serious explaining to do!” Amy could practically feel the fire shooting out of her ears and then she noticed Michael. “Who are you?”
“I’m Michael Guerin…I’m a friend of…”
“Why are you here? Are you having sex with my daughter?”
“Mom!” Maria was so embarrassed. She knew Michael didn’t exactly have a great track record with parents, so she was sure any minute he’d say completely the wrong thing!
“No, Ms. Deluca. Maria and I are just dating…well, you know…we just started…so nothing’s gone too…well we haven’t…no.” Suddenly Michael realized Maria had been right…her mom was scary.
“Would the two of you just get in here before the neighbors start gossiping?” Amy stepped aside and allowed them to come in. She closed the door behind them and then gestured toward the couch. “Sit down…you’ve both got a lot of explaining to do.”
Michael waited for Maria to sit down, and then took a seat next to her. So much for getting any sleep!
Liz woke up several hours later with the sunlight streaming in the window, and the warmth of Max’s body as he cradled her closely. Waking up beside him felt more right than anything else had in a long time. She wasn’t ready to move, but she needed to go to the bathroom. Slowly, she wiggled out from beneath Max’s strong arms and got up. When she came back into her room she saw that Max’s eyes were open.
“I hope I didn’t wake you.” She walked over and sat down next to him on the bed.
Max yawned and pulled his weight up onto his elbow. “When I didn’t feel you next to me I woke up. Want to come back to bed?” He grinned at her like a Cheshire cat.
Liz blushed. Somehow he could make her melt with just a smile. “I wish we could, but it’s late. Plus, we have some things to do today.”
“We do? Can’t we just lie around in bed all day?” Max stuck his lip out in a pout.
“Max, be fair. You know I’m weak when it comes to you.” She winked at him and then finished explaining her plans for the day. “Max, I want to go out to the Indian reservation…my Grandma was very well known out there, so I was thinking we might be able to find out something.” Liz stopped and nibbled on her lower lip.
“What is it? I know you want something.”
Liz took a deep breath and then started talking again. “Max…I’d like to see the pods. I mean if it’s ok with you.” She rushed out.
“Of course it’s ok. Liz, I’d never hide anything from you, especially where I came from. And since your Grandma Claudia was involved, I feel like you have a right to know why.”
Liz smiled widely like a kid at Christmas, and jumped up off the bed. “Well, let’s go then!”
“What about the others?”
“Ok, well…I know Alex’s parents, so I’m positive he’s grounded, but don’t worry it never lasts long before they give in. Then, there’s Maria’s mom…I’m absolutely positive she blew a gasket when Maria came home, and since Michael was with her…I’m betting they were both interrogated and then lectured on the downside of premarital sex. It’ll probably be a few days before we see them again.” Liz could only imagine the hell Ms. Deluca had put Michael through, but she got a twisted sense of pleasure knowing Michael was finally the one on the receiving end.
“Well, what about Isabel?”
“I honestly don’t know. Before this past week I never really knew her. I’ve heard her parents are kind of cold, so they might not have even noticed she was gone.” Liz felt bad for Isabel. Sure, she’d joined in with Maria talking about what a snob she was, but now she saw her in a totally different light.
“I’m gonna try calling her then…if she’s not in trouble, she’ll want to see this as much as you do.” Liz picked up the phone and dialed Isabel’s number, and then quickly handed Max the phone. “Thanks.” He listened as the phone rang, but finally on the fourth ring someone picked up.
“Hello.”
Max knew her voice instantly. “Isabel, it’s Max. How are you?”
“Alright I guess. My parents barely knew I was gone, and now that I’m home safely they don’t feel the need to give it any more attention.”
Max could hear the hurt in her voice, which made him angry. When it came to Isabel, he felt a brotherly protectiveness over her. “I’m sorry, Iz. Get dressed, ‘cause we’re coming to pick you up.”
“To go where?”
“Liz wants to see the pod chamber, and I think it’s time you saw it too.”
”I’ll be ready in fifteen minutes…see you soon.”
Max heard the dial tone and turned the phone off. “She’ll be ready in fifteen minutes.”
”Great! Oh, Max…what should I wear?”
“Huh? I don’t know. Something comfortable…hiking boots maybe.”
“Max…I can’t wear hiking boots the first time I see where you were born. I have to look special.”
Max loved it when she was like this. He knew it was partially hormonal, but the rest was just Liz being Liz. He’d never met anyone with such a tender heart and now he couldn’t wait for them to really be married. “You can wear anything you want to and you’ll still be beautiful.”
“Aww, Max.” She melted into his arms and felt the butterflies in her stomach as his lips touched hers. Being in Max’s arms was her own personal heaven…one she’d never want to leave.
~*~*~*~*~
After arguing with Liz’s parents for twenty minutes about where they were going, they were finally on their way to pick up Isabel. She was waiting at the end of the driveway, and smiled when they pulled up. They all made small talk as they drove out toward the dessert, and to the pod chamber. Max pulled his car over once they finally reached their destination. Each of them took a deep breath before climbing out of the car.
They all walked up the slope that led to the chamber, with Max being extra careful to make sure Liz was ok. Once there, they all just stared in silence, not sure what it was they were getting themselves into. Finally, Max stepped forward and touched the cave wall, and then stepped back to watch for himself as it opened.
Max looked at Isabel, knowing how much this moment meant to her. She smiled easily, but nervously back at him, and then stepped forward. He looked to Liz then, but where he expected to see fear, there was nothing but excitement.
“You ready?” He asked.
Liz smiled and stepped forward. “I’m ready.”
They walked in together and stared in awe at the empty pods that had once held Max, Michael, and Isabel. Liz noticed the fourth pod immediately, and walked over to take a closer look.
“Max…there’s four. What happened to the fourth?”
Max was about to answer when there was a sound behind them. They all turned around to see an old Indian standing in the doorway.
“What are you doing here?” River Dog questioned.
“I’m…well…Claudia Parker brought me out here a few years back…I just wanted to show…” Max couldn’t seem to find the words he was looking for.
“Claudia brought you here, but what about the other two?”
Isabel stepped forward and faced the man. “I belong here for the same reasons he does.”
River Dog looked at them both and nodded his head in understanding. Then he gestured toward Liz. “And you? Why are you here?”
Liz stepped forward to where Max and Isabel stood. “I’m with them, but I’m also Liz Parker…Claudia Parker’s granddaughter.”
River Dog stepped forward and concentrated on Liz. “Your grandmother loved you very much. She always knew this day would come.”
Liz looked at him with confusion. “I’m sorry, but what day?”
“The day you would finally face your true destiny. You belong here…just as they do.”
“Me? But I’m not…”
“Come.” He said and took a seat on the floor. “It’s time you learn who you truly are.”
Max, Liz, and Isabel followed him and each took a seat, but none of them knew that what this man had to say would forever change their lives.
