Epilogue
They sat curled together on the lounge watching the fire works shooting into the dark sky and waiting for the famous apple to drop in Times Square. Max pulled her small body against his tighter. She was never close enough, and they were never touching enough.
“Our first New Year” he whispered, awed that he was with her, here to share it. The past five days had been the best of his life. He reached out and fingered the necklace around Liz’s neck and couldn’t help but think back to Christmas Day when he had finally been able to give it to her.
Flashback to Christmas Day
They had sat together at the pond holding hands and talking for what felt like hours when they realised the time.
“Will you come with me to Christmas dinner at Alex and Isabel’s?” she whispered.
“I’d go to the ends of the world with you, Liz” he smiled back.
“You would wouldn’t you?” she said awed.
“Yes. I love you. I’ve always loved you."
“I love you too.” Max smiled brilliantly after hearing her words. Although she had said it already it was still the first time she'd said it back when he had told her he loved her.
“I have something for you,” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the small package.
“I was going to leave it with Michael to give to you after I left.” He was glad that he hadn’t been able to part with it.
Liz unwrapped the small present carefully until she pulled out the delicate bag. Her hand was shaking for some reason and she wasn’t sure why. She opened the bag and poured its contents out into the palm of her hand.
“Oh Max,” she gasped. The chain was so delicate you could barely see it, but hanging from it in the middle was a small guardian angel, with a diamond halo.
“I thought it was appropriate and that it could look out for you when I was gone,” he explained.
Liz felt herself tearing up “Can you help me put it on?” she asked. When Max nodded and took the necklace Liz turned and lifted her hair so he could place it around her neck. Max secured the necklace like an expert and when he was sure it was in place he leaned in and placed a warm open mouth kiss against the back of Liz’s neck.
“Merry Christmas, my beautiful Liz” he said.
Turning back to face him, Liz cupped his masculine cheek in her small hand. “Merry Christmas,” she whispered back, before leaning in and kissing him.
Liz sighed and closed her eyes against Max’s strong chest. She couldn’t believe that he was here with her and that he loved her and that she had been able to finally tell him that she loved him. He had saved her in so many ways and her heart felt like it would burst right now with happiness. She couldn’t wait to tell him the news that she had discovered just that morning.
After Christmas dinner with her friends, Liz and Max finally sat down and talked about everything. Liz was shocked and happy to find out that Max had been watching over her for as long as he could remember and the reasons for his sudden appearance into her life. She had cried and thrown herself into his arms when he told her that he shared every hurt and heartbreak with her his entire life, and how he wished everyday that he could come and take it away.
“You did?” Liz had told him.
Max frowned slightly. “Just by being here and being there when I needed you the most,” he explained.
“Do you know how happy it makes me to think that all that time I would spend wishing and praying wasn’t for nothing. That there really was someone out there looking after me?”
Max shook his head, he really didn’t have any understanding because he’d never had that. “You don’t do you?” she had asked him.
“I had Michael,” he replied.
“Well now you have me.If you ever feel alone or sad, never doubt that I will be close by. I want you know that I’ll be there for you, always” she promised him.
“My very own guardian angel?” he smiled.
“Uh huh,” she had giggled.
Liz was brought out of her pensive thoughts by the feel of Max’s mouth against her neck. “Just checking you're still awake,” he whispered huskily.
Wiggling her bottom against his arousal Liz giggled. “I’m very awake,” she told him.
“Good.”
They watched as the countdown for the New Year started.
10, 9
“Max?”
8, 7
“Yeah?” Max took his eyes away from the television to find Liz staring up at him.
6, 5
“I have something to tell you,” she smiled.
4, 3
“Ok,” he said.

“I’m pregnant,” she smiled
HAPPY NEW YEAR
The television erupted with noise and cheering as Max leaned down and took Liz’s mouth passionately. She wasn’t sure if he had really heard what she said but she responded eagerly, allowing him to turn her around so that she was straddling him.
They pulled apart panting. “You're pregnant?” he asked, a small smile lighting up his face.
Liz nodded.
“How? When?” he asked in happy surprise.
Liz laughed. “Well I think you know how, but if you need a refresher I can help you out there.”
“Yeah, I might have to take you up on that later,” he kissed her again.
“As for when, well I’m not exactly sure, but I took a test this morning because I was a week late,” she explained.
Max reached down and lifted her woolen jumper and shirt so he could see her stomach.
“You can’t tell yet,” she told him.
“I know, but I just can't believe that a little piece of me and you, a little piece of our love, is growing inside of you,” he said awed.
“Well it is,” Liz said cupping his face. “And just like his or her father. they are a miracle,” she added.
“Thank you,” he whispered as tears sprung to his eyes.
“What for?” Liz asked. She was the one who should be thankful, God had sent this wonderful man to her and she would spend the rest of her life trying to deserve him. One thing Liz Parker knew though was that no one would ever love Max Evans the way she did.
“For being you and for giving me this,” he said.
“I’m the one who should be thankful. I mean I almost lost you,” she said, her eyes filling with tears.
“Shh”, Max said pulling her to him. “You didn’t and that’s all that matters.”
“I know, and now we’re going to have a baby” she smiled.
“Yes, we’re going to have lots of babies and we’re going to grow old together Liz."
Liz smiled through her tears. He always knew the perfect thing to say. “I’m going to love you forever Max. "I’m going to hold and love you so hard and so perfectly,” she promised him.
Max smiled. “You already do.”
Liz shook her head. “No. I will never take anything for granted. I’m going to love you everyday, like it’s the last night on earth.”
Max mirrored Liz’s thoughts as he brought their mouths back together again, and when he pulled apart he glanced over his shoulder and saw Michael leaning against the wall with Gabrielle. The light that surrounded them was beautiful and comforting, but the love Max felt in his heart for Liz and her love for him, enveloped him like a blanket, and he knew that he would never want anything more for the rest of his life.
They smiled at him, and with one last wave they disappeared. Max knew he would miss his best friend but something told him Michael would never be too far, and he knew he could always reach him through Maria. It wasn’t the end. He turned back to Liz then and she smiled at him, obviously seeing Michael and Gabrielle too.
Heaven had been his stopover on the way home.
