midnightstar29 - Thanks for the thumbs up! :D What more will they learn about their powers, you ask? Well...they discover that they might be able to 'share' all of their powers afterall. In other words, all eight of them might be able to mindwarp, blast, dreamwalk, create lightning, manipulate fire...just imagine the possibilities!

sylus27 - I don't want to say too much about the dupes' fate because it would ruin it for you. Let me just say...the dupes might just be too dangerous to be much of a help against Kivar. However...that doesn't mean that their story is complete.

nibbles2 - LOL! No, Kyle doesn't ever change his shoes. He's a typical guy with one favorite pair of tennis shoes that won't be replaced until they fall apart at the seams.

RhondaAnn - Brilliant observations! Yes, the gang was seeing Serena's memories and yes, their long trip down 'memory lane' helped the dupes find them. Oops.

ultimatepickupline - Thanks! I'm glad you liked the longer chapter. The next fic has longer chapters like that...although I haven't written in any major cliffhangers on that one yet. I'll have to work on that I guess. :P

Timelord31 - I tried not to make you resort to daily PMs for a new chapter. I was almost successful...I hope this chapter was worth the wait!

Jennifer24 and tequathisy - Sorry for the wicked ending! It was a little bit fun though, right? :P

A/N: Thanks for all the compliments on that last chapter! I promise, that cliffhanger wasn't meant to torture my readers. I just had to have a bit of fun before the end...yes, you read that right...this fic is almost complete. *sniff* But on a sunnier note; this is definitely not the end of the series. I've already got 16 chapters of the third installment written so I hope you guys stick around for the rest. :D Enjoy!

Chapter 31: Lines Have Been Drawn

FBI Director, Peter Adams, was barking orders into a walkie-talkie. His days as a field agent were long gone but there was no way he was going to ride the sidelines on this one. Currently, he was flying down the highway in a black SUV, working feverishly to mobilize the rest of his team. He had already dispatched agents to the Roswell crew’s location in the hopes that they would be able to prevent the impending attack.

His team had been completely blindsided when they listened to the audio footage of Liz’s vision. They realized immediately that the imposters were going to give them the slip and launch an attack on the Roswell group. Adams didn’t waste one moment questioning the validity of Liz’s vision. He immediately dispatched his entire team to Orlando, Florida. Even the agents on ‘imposter duty’ were sent out to the sunny state armed and ready.

The bug planted on Kyle hadn’t failed the FBI yet. Thank God he hadn't bought new shoes! Barely 12 hours after Liz's vision, Adams found himself reeling over all he had learned. At this point, the Roswell crew knew about the FBI’s involvement in their lives, they knew that the FBI was on their side and they had somehow even managed to read Serena’s memories via Liz’s vision. Amazingly, Serena had been completely unaware of the incident, so apparently the kids didn’t actually go into her mind directly. Today would be a day for the history books; Adams just knew it.

Urgent messages started flooding the SUV. The vehicle was equipped to be a mobile base of operations. The entire thing was outfitted with the latest in communication technology. Adams’ driver didn’t even bat an eye when the gadgets in the SUV lit up like a Christmas tree.

“We have visual confirmation! The eagle has landed. I repeat…the eagle has landed!” Harrison barked, referring to the sudden arrival of the dupes.

“You know your orders! Everybody move!” Adams yelled into his walkie-talkie.

*******************************************************

On one side of the park was a large group of armed FBI agents. On the other side, Courtney crept up and watched from the shadows. Directly between the two newcomers, less than a yard away from the distracted podsquad, the evil trio leered triumphantly.

“Not a threat? I’d say that’s an understatement, wouldn’t you Isabel?” Rath sneered.

Dozens of FBI agents started pouring into park, not caring whether they were seen or not. Harrison and Serena were at the head of the pack, clad in full riot gear, weapons ready. The entire team surged forward, hoping they still had time to prevent Liz’s prophetic vision from taking place.

“Rath!” Isabel gasped. Rath grabbed her and motioned for Lonnie and Tess to begin their attack.

The two women wasted no time. They immediately fired off blasts in all directions. They knew that they had to do as much damage as possible before the Royal Eight had time to join their powers. With Isabel separated from the others, there was no way they could join now anyway.

At that very moment, it seemed like the scene started to unfold in slow motion. FBI agents were flooding the scene. The royal soldiers joined the fight and started blasting at Tess and Lonnie with as much power as they could muster. The dupes were blocking the blasts of their attackers with larger ones of their own. Alex was blindly rushing forward to help Isabel.

Max threw his hands out and struggled to shield the rest of the group with one hand while blasting at Tess with the other. He desperately wanted to blast Rath right out of his shoes but he was too afraid he’d hit Isabel in the process. Fire shot from his outstretched hand as he focused his fury on Tess.

Liz was too preoccupied with feigning off Lonnie’s advances to add her power to Max’s shield. He was getting stronger and she knew his shield would hold without her help. For now, she adopted a defensive stance next to Michael and Maria and unleashed a torrent of blasts at the evil trio. Things were so crazy; she didn’t even notice that she was shooting out crackling bolts of lightning between each blast…just like Michael and Maria.

Rath had Isabel by the hair, twisting her neck violently. She lashed out, flailing her arms and kicking at him with as much strength as she could muster. After a very well placed kick to the groin, Rath leaned over in pain but never released his hold on Isabel. He gave her a mild electric shock to the back to stop her kicking. He smirked as he thought about how stunned her friends would be when he teleported her directly to his ship while they were too busy fighting for their pathetic lives to notice. Unfortunately for him, this smug plan was overlooking one crucial detail. Alex Whitman.

Alex charged at Rath, growling in disbelief. No one hurts his Isabel…no one. If he had known how to blast, Alex might have killed Rath on the spot. Instead, he lashed out at Michael's vile look-a-like with a quick punch directly to the windpipe. Rath dropped to one knee, gasping for air. As soon as he lost his hold on Isabel, she grabbed Alex’s hand and they ran over to join the others. They abruptly vanished from sight as they ran. Max blinked in surprise, panicking at their disappearance. Seconds later, they reappeared and Max dropped his shield to let them back in.

In the split second the shield was down, Tess landed a searing blast to Ava’s leg. Kyle turned on her in fury. His hands were balled up in fists, flames rising up his arms, engulfing his biceps. His face was a terrifying mask of fury. Then, in an instant, he just disappeared. Tess looked around in confusion for a moment, not believing her eyes. Seconds later, she stumbled forward as a massive ball of fire hit her from behind. Kyle reappeared at Ava’s side as Tess dropped to the ground, trying to put out her flaming shirt.

The FBI agents watched the chaos unfold with frantic disbelief. They couldn’t get anywhere near the battle because Max’s shield and the violent blasts of colored light forced them to keep their distance. They didn’t know how to proceed at this point. The Director and the President had authorized them to use deadly force against the imposters if necessary but…the Roswell crew hadn’t. If the Royals saw the move as threatening, it could mean deadly consequences for the agents on the field. Soon, the choice would be taken out of their hands.

While Liz rushed over to heal Ava, Michael and Maria continued furiously blasting through Max’s shield. It was very obvious that the dupes’ powers had grown exponentially after their training on Antar. Fortunately, Michael and Maria were both furious enough to match the dupes’ powers blow for blow. Max’s shield was taking such a beating from both the inside and the outside that he couldn’t hold it up any longer.

As Max’s shield fell, the FBI agents closed in and the dupes started firing directly at all of the unprotected people before them. Liz was so busy tending to the injured; she didn’t notice Lonnie carefully aiming a blast straight for her. Suddenly, a massive weight slammed into her side and knocked her to the ground. When she looked up, the man she knew as ‘Professor Harrison’ was standing protectively in front of her, pointing his rifle directly at Lonnie.

“You can try to shoot me young lady, but I promise you that my finger will pull this trigger before I go down.” He threatened, fixing Lonnie with a challenging look.

Max heard Liz yelp in pain and turned to see an FBI agent standing over her. His concentration was interrupted just long enough for Rath to hit him with a massive bolt of lightning. The violent energy leapt from Max’s body over to Alex and Isabel as well. All three of them dropped where they stood, hair singed, fingernails blackened.

Serena saw the three fall in complete horror. They were obviously stunned. Defenseless. She reacted on sheer instinct. She rushed forward, gun drawn, and stood defensively in front of the wounded group. She knew her gun was no match for the firepower the aliens possessed but she couldn’t stand idly by while that imposter killed three innocent people. Rath fixed Serena with a cold smile and prepared to unleash a fatal blast. Max raised a smoking hand and created a small, flickering shield around Serena. She was trying to protect them and he couldn’t allow her to die as she had in Liz’s vision.

Michael and Maria stood back to back and called down a wall of lightning to surround their wounded group. The barrier blocked out the evil trio’s blasts, but most of the royal soldiers were now trapped outside the shield as well. Michael let out a string of curses that would’ve shocked even him in any other situation. He was going to get those soldiers killed if he didn’t think of something soon.

Maria squinted her eyes and started panting as she focused on something unseen outside the lightning barrier. “I think I’ve got a shield around the soldiers!” She yelled to Michael. Sure enough, they could just barely make out a faint purple flicker outside the tangle of lightning surrounding them.

“I can’t tell if I’m shielding the dupes or the soldiers!” Maria said in alarm. “I can picture the shield around the soldiers in my mind but I don’t know if what I’m seeing is real or just wishful thinking…”

“Which one of you is in charge?” Harrison yelled over the chaos. He was still hovering over Liz, although they had both now moved over to where Max, Alex and Isabel lay.

Jim Valenti stepped forward, his service revolver drawn. “Mind telling us why you’re asking?” He challenged. The other parents stepped forward as well, as though they could protect the kids with their bare hands. Judging by the conviction in their eyes, at this very moment, they probably could.

“I have men ready to take down those imposters as soon as I give the word. I am asking you, point blank, is there any reason I should delay that call?” Harrison said in a rush.

Michael and Maria sustained their lightning shield while considering Harrison’s offer nervously. This man was asking for permission to kill someone? How could they agree to something like that? On the other hand, how could they say no when the trio had the power to kill every royal soldier outside the shield?

“When you say ‘take down’, if you mean temporarily incapacitate them…then go for it.” Maria said hesitantly.

Ava was helping Liz tend to the wounded when she heard the exchange between Harrison and Maria. She looked up in alarm. “Drop your shield Maria! If you’re shielding the dupes, the Feds won’t be able to get anywhere near them!”

As Maria nervously lowered her arm and released her hold on the purple shield, Harrison barked orders into his walkie-talkie. There was so much static from the lightning barrier that he wasn’t sure his instructions were even being heard. A moment later, it was obvious that the electromagnetic disturbance from the massive shield had likely fried the agent’s electronic equipment.

“If I fire off a flare, will it penetrate this shield or will it just bounce back at us?” Harrison asked Michael in a rush.

Michael frowned. “I have no idea. Hang on…”

Michael and Maria shifted slightly and above them, an opening appeared in the dense tangle of lightning. Maria looked to Harrison and cautioned, “I hope you’re aim is good…”

Harrison raised the flare gun and pulled the trigger. Liz propped herself up from her position near Max and created another shield around the group in case Harrison’s flare bounced back at them. A tiny ‘pop’ could be heard above the loud crackling of the lightning shield. Seconds later, the deafening sound of gunfire confirmed that his flare had been seen and his orders had been carried out. Suddenly, there was silence on the other side of the shield. Harrison called out to the rest of the agents, telling them to stand their ground and keep their weapons ready. After a tense moment, Michael and Maria dropped their shield to survey the damage.

The evil trio lay bleeding from several painful looking gunshot wounds. The agents stood their ground, weapons trained on the enemy. Liz eyed the surrounding agents nervously as she prepared to finish healing her friends. There was no point in hiding her powers now but it was still scary to display them so openly with FBI agents on the scene.

Michael and Maria approached the royal soldiers surrounding Rath and his crew. It broke their hearts to see that a few of the soldiers had been fatally wounded in the short battle. Maria felt a temporary rush of relief when she saw that none of the soldiers had been injured by the gunfire but the feeling quickly vanished when she realized they had died protecting her and her friends instead. Michael instantly thought it was his entire fault for trapping them outside the lightning barrier. Kaden stood at attention as his Commanders approached.

“What are your plans for these three Sir?” Kaden asked stiffly. Underneath his tough exterior, he was in pain. He had lost friends today. His sadness was so raw; most of the podsquad could feel it as though it was their own.

“Kivar doesn’t take failure well I assume, right? He’d be really pissed off at these guys right about now I bet…” Maria mused with an angry glint in her eyes.

“They attacked in broad daylight in the middle of a public park. If we let them stay, you know they'll attack again and next time, innocent bystanders could get caught in the crossfire." Kyle chimed in. Ava limped over and looked down at the dupes with distaste.

“Kivar doesn’t know the meaning of mercy. It might be a death sentence…” She added.

“Or, maybe it will send a message that we’re not going down without a fight this time.” Isabel said as she approached with Alex. Liz and Ava had managed to heal all but their singed hair.

Max and Liz trudged up in exhaustion. “Kivar might let them live so that he can use them as royal figureheads for a bit longer…” Liz pointed out.

“He’ll probably cover the whole incident up and keep them around for appearances. He’ll never let them forget they failed though. Their days are numbered no matter what we do.” Max added bitterly.

The answer was obvious. The evil trio would be sent back to the palace, wounded and empty-handed. The Royal Eight would join their powers as they had done the last time they faced off against the dupes and create a vortex to send the trio back to Antar. The FBI agents watched in complete fascination as the gang proceeded with their plan. Agent Harrison, the resident physicist, marveled at the spectacle occurring before his very eyes.

As the light from the vortex faded, they could still hear Rath screaming, "Nooooo!" His cries were reduced to a numb silence as the vortex disappeared from sight.

No one seemed to know what to do next. The park was destroyed. It looked like a bomb had fallen right in the middle of the picnic area and the surrounding trees were on fire. Much to everyone's dismay, it looked like the motel next door was quickly being consumed by the blaze as well. The entire Roswell crew eyed the surrounding FBI agents with concern. There was just no way they could 'fix' this now.

The brunette agent from Liz’s vision approached them carefully. “I understand that you probably don’t trust us yet, and for good reason I suspect, but you really can’t stay here. In this park I mean…we have to get a clean up crew in here to survey the damage. We have arranged a place for you to stay…not a military base of course, but a private ranch in the Rocky Mountains. We could take you there right now if you’re ready.”

Max nearly had a panic attack on the spot. The FBI was trying to trick them somehow. He was sure of it. They had taken him once but there was no way he was willingly going to let them take him again. Liz could feel Max’s fear but she wasn’t so sure that this was a trick. The brunette woman from her vision had tried to protect her friends, just as she had foreseen. They had to make a decision quickly and this was not the time to react out of blind fear.

“Answer one question first and then we’ll think about it.” Liz began. “Do you still think we’re brave? After everything you saw here today, after you watched us deliver the dupes to our greatest enemy…do you honestly still admire our bravery?”

Serena was shocked to hear Liz quote a passage from her journal. They must have seen it during their walk through her memories. She wasn’t angry of course. To be honest, Serena had felt honored they had chosen her of all people from Liz’s vision to connect with. Sure, this question was out of left field, but Serena knew exactly why Liz was asking.

“There’s not a doubt in my mind that you are good people. You can tell a lot about a person by the choices they make in impossible situations. You couldn’t let those imposters go free, but you didn’t want to kill them in cold-blood, while they lay defenseless either. To answer your question, yes, I do still think you guys are brave.” Seeing the doubtful looks on a few of the Roswell faces, Serena looked at each one in turn and explained further.

“Max shielded more than a dozen people while leaving himself exposed, hoping to find a way to get his sister away from that guy impersonating Michael. Liz dashed from one wounded person to the next, dodging blasts the entire time, risking her own life to heal others. Kyle had a chance to kill Tess but he didn’t…even though he easily could have. Michael’s impersonator seems to be the strongest one of that bunch, yet Alex faced him head on to help Isabel anyway. I saw the pain on Michael’s face when he realized that your guardians were trapped outside that shield, completely unprotected. It broke his heart! Last but not least, when given the chance to let someone else take out the imposters, Maria asked that they only be incapacitated…not killed. We still have a lot of questions about where you come from and why you’re here, but there isn’t one agent out here that questions whether or not you’re good people.” Serena said with conviction.

**********************************************************

From the woods at the edge of the park, Courtney watched in fascination as the Royal Eight prepared to make a new alliance with the FBI. It was an odd turn of events that she never could have predicted. She had known for weeks that the FBI was following both the royals and the dupes but she never imagined that they would choose sides.

She had shown up at the park today, intending to subtly tip the scales in the Royals’ favor. She wasn’t there out of loyalty or friendship. She had simply showed up because she thought the Royals were at an unfair disadvantage. When she saw the FBI come storming into the park though, her whole plan changed. The Royals didn’t need help at all. Actually, they had held their own quite well, much to her surprise. And now, it appeared that they were going to come out of this grizzly situation with new allies.

Courtney tried to gauge her choices now. On one hand, she could reveal herself as the leader of the Eros resistance, forging an even greater alliance with the Royal Eight and these Earthlings. On the other hand, she didn’t know if these kids were really capable of forcing Kivar off the throne. She had no way of knowing if the royals would even be willing to fight for people they had never seen in this lifetime. Worse yet, even if they did fulfill their destiny and succeed against Kivar, would they be the rulers the Alpha system so desperately needed? Or would they just make everything worse?

Courtney shrunk back into the shadows and made her decision. There would be no alliance between the Eros resistance and the Royals…not yet. She had to think about the needs of her people. Her people needed two things desperately. They needed Kivar off the throne and they needed the right people to take his place. Courtney just didn’t know if the royals had changed enough in this lifetime to be the rulers her people so desperately needed. So instead, she crept back to her car and vowed to watch and wait.

I owe a big thanks to all of you have waited so patiently for these last few chapters! I won't name you all because you know who you are already but seriously...thank you. You guys are the best! :D

The good news is, in the time that I've been gone, I've completely finished the thirt installment of this series. (All 28 Chapters and 251 pages of it...) Will that be the last one? I have no idea. This series has been a blast to write and I'd hate to just let these characters fade away without sharing more adventures. Thanks again to all of my VERY PATIENT readers and I hope the end if this fic prompts you to continue reading the next.

Chapter 32: The Dawn of a New Era

Two months passed before the Roswell crew really felt like they could trust the outsiders that had shown up in their lives so suddenly. Their powers had been completely exposed when they were attacked in Orlando. After everything the gang had seen in Serena’s memories and everything she had said on the day of the attack, they knew they could trust her but the other agents would have to work very hard to earn their trust.

On that fateful day in Orlando, after the dust had fallen and the injured were healed, the FBI whisked them all away to a private ranch compound near the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. They were repeatedly assured along the way that they were free to leave at any time. The agents weren’t taking them into custody; they were simply offering them anonymity. Michael spent the entire ride out there with his powers primed and ready to strike if the need arose. It never did.

The compound turned out to be a 40-acre chunk of private ranch land complete with three very large homes. The ranch had been a vacation retreat used by many of the former Presidents and their families. The gang was given full use of the beautiful compound and true to the agents’ words, they really were free to come and go as they pleased.

The seemingly odd hospitality of the FBI was suddenly clarified one sunny afternoon almost a week after the gang had settled in at the ranch. The telltale ‘thwap thwap thwap’ sound of helicopter blades signaled that they had a visitor coming. That visitor just happened to be the President of the United States. His arrival at the compound would have been a bit overwhelming by itself, but the droves of armed Secret Service agents that showed up with him made the scene even more surreal.

It took more than one visit with the President and his cabinet members to convince the weary Roswell group that the government was actually being up front with them for once. Max and Isabel were clearly the stars of those meetings. Michael and Ava felt uncomfortable and out of place in the same room with these people but Max and Isabel stepped forward and took charge with complete confidence. Their destined roles became glaringly obvious at that point. Max and Isabel were clearly destined for diplomatic greatness.

When the President offered them a permanent home at the ranch compound, Isabel challenged him to explain his motives…why were they being so generous and why now? When he explained that he wanted to offer them both legal asylum within the US and private land to settle on, Max challenged him to define the exact price that would be attached to such an offer. He asked the President point blank what he would be expecting in return for such a gift. The Roswell crew was never blatantly rude during these meetings, but they did make it obvious that the United States government wasn’t dealing with a bunch of bumbling children. The whole crazy diplomatic dance somehow resulted in a new sense of respect between the Roswell crew and the federal officials.

Ironically enough, the only price attached to the land and the homes was truth. Just truth. The government wanted to forge an alliance between the true Royal Antarean government and the US. They wanted to know the whole story of how the podsquad came to be in exile on Earth. They wanted details about Kivar. Ultimately, they wanted the assurance that the podsquad and crew would help them be ready for the inevitable visit from other extraterrestrial nations. In return, the President pledged to respect their privacy at the ranch and to offer any assistance he could if Kivar threatened their lives again. The President knew full well this was the first alliance of its kind…the first intergalactic alliance in Earth’s history. Sadly, the outside world would never know about this momentous event though. It just wasn't safe.

Liz bullied more than one government official into admitting that the actions of former Agent Pierce were an embarrassment. She and Isabel made the President himself admit that part of his eagerness to forge this new alliance stemmed from the fact that they were the Royal Eight and their mistreatment could provoke a war. He won major brownie points with the podsquad for admitting it, although his advisors were openly horrified that he said it. He explained that agent Pierce had been a rogue agent for quite a while and by the time anyone figured it out, it was too late. After Pierce had made such a mess of things, the government could only try to fit together the remaining puzzle pieces to figure out what was really going on. They had to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Maria of all people summed it up best when she said…

“Well it’s not like we trusted you either so I guess that makes us even…except for that time you guys kidnapped and tortured King Max here, but I think it’s going to take you a long time to make up for that one…Sir.”

Michael managed to squeak in a request of his own when Max and Isabel were hammering out the details of the group’s involvement with the government. He requested formal combat training for the entire group, to be held twice a week at the ranch. They thought for sure that the President would deny that request but surprisingly, after some consultation with his advisors from the Department of Defense, he agreed. The only condition was that the military instructors be allowed to sit in on some of the gang’s special training sessions in return…the sessions where they honed their alien powers. In the spirit of compromise, Max and Michael hesitantly agreed to that condition.

There was such a whirlwind of events out at the ranch for the first few weeks of their stay, the gang didn’t get to talk to their FBI rescuers again for nearly two months. Liz finally put in a formal request to visit with Agent Harrison and “the young brunette agent.” The gang still didn’t even know the woman’s name. FBI Director Adams wasted no time granting that request. He had Serena and Harrison flown out the very next day.

Serena was thrilled to see how relaxed the group looked when she and John arrived. They were just as she had suspected. Good people…simple as that.

“I really like what you guys have done with the place. I could use some of your decorating skills at my own place!” Serena joked, trying to break the ice.

Ava blushed. “That’s kind of why we invited you out here today.” She began.

“You want to decorate my house?!” Serena asked in amusement.

“What? Oh..no. That’s not what I meant!” Ava laughed. “See the thing is…we thought it would only be fair if we told you personally that…well…” Ava trailed off nervously.

“Would it make it easier for you if I told you that I understand that you may have done some detective work of your own while you were on the run? I can respect the need to arm yourself with information…especially when the lives of your loved ones depend on it.” Serena said cryptically.

“You know, don’t you?” Kyle blurted out. “You got the whole thing on tape or something didn’t you?”

“If you mean I know that you went sifting around in my memories looking for a reason to trust me, then yes. I do. And I understand.” Serena announced boldly.

“Wait…what? How are you OK with that? You’re just all…oh yeah…they went poking around in my head but no big deal. Why aren’t you upset?” Maria babbled in shock.

“I’m not upset because you weren’t probing around for the latest round of gossip; you were trying to stay alive. You wanted to know if you could trust me just as badly as I wanted to know if I could trust you. I can respect that because I felt the same way when I was first handed your case files. We bugged your friend, and you peeked at a few of my memories. In the end, is one really more invasive than the other?”

“You know…we never got a chance to formally introduce ourselves.” Isabel offered her hand first to Serena and then to John. “I’m Isabel, that’s Alex, over there is Max and Liz…” She trailed off with a blush when she realized that these agents already knew who they were.

Harrison chuckled. “Yes…we know who you are. My name is John Harrison and this here is Serena Foster.”

Liz turned gray immediately. “Your name is Serena?” She croaked.

“You don’t like my name, Liz?” Serena asked in confusion. Liz’s reaction had been so extreme for such a simple thing as a name.

“Oh no! It’s a lovely name! It’s just…uh…well you see…” Liz looked helplessly at the others. They hadn’t discussed whether or not they were going to tell anyone else about the Future Max story. She had no idea how to explain her reaction otherwise though.

“How about we tell you guys a little bit about ourselves first and while we do that, you can decide whether or not you want to tell me why my name upset you so badly.” Serena offered kindly.

“How do you do that? How do you always know what to say?” Ava asked curiously. This woman seemed to know exactly what to say to diffuse the situation the second tension arose. It was almost eerie.

Serena smiled. “When you hear my story, you’ll understand. I have a PhD in Sociology as well as a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology. I joined the FBI in June of 1997. I’m what you would call a profiler I guess. In the beginning I worked on mainly white-collar cases…embezzlement, money laundering, et cetera. It was my job to study the cases and write up a profile of the man or woman we should be looking for. After a year of that, I was bumped up to the more high profile cases…violent criminals mainly. My job is about 40% skill and maybe 60% intuition. If you don’t understand people, you can’t do my job.”

“They assigned a violent criminal expert to our case?! We gee…makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside…” Kyle blurted.

“Oh Kyle, it’s not like that. I pursued a degree in Sociology because I am, and always have been, intrigued by people. I was always interested in every little nuance of people, the societies they form, the nations they build, et cetera. As you can imagine, outside of the competitive grant driven academic world, there isn’t much use for my skills in that area. I’m not competitive by nature. I didn’t want to sit in a dingy college office spending all my time begging for grant money just so I could go study some remote tribe in Africa. I decided that if I wanted to actually make a living, I’d better find a paying job and then pursue my other interests in my free time. Hence, my job at the FBI.” Serena paused to take a drink of the fresh lemonade Isabel brought her.

“Anyway, in January of this year I was recruited to join a special team of agents who were researching the validity of the Roswell Crash. At first I didn’t understand where my skills would be of any use, but the second they put the case files in my hands it was obvious. They already knew of the presence of four extraterrestrial individuals right here in the United States and they wanted me to figure out if they were friend or foe…no offense.” Serena finished.

“Oh how clever! They brought you in on the investigation because you were the best person to evaluate our little ‘society’ so to speak. Your sociology background requires you to be unbiased in your observations. You observe, find the patterns and then create a profile. Cool!” Ava bubbled. She was actually quite impressed.

“Exactly! I don’t mean to pry Ava, but I do believe you would be quite good at what I do. You should really think about continuing your criminology studies.” Serena said. She had no idea she was recommending that Ava pursue the exact same role she was prophesied to take on Antar.

Ava was beaming with pride when Max interrupted the moment. “So…Mr. Harrison. How did you get mixed up in all of this?”

Harrison sighed. “That’s quite a long story really. I have a PhD in Physics. During the cold war my expertise in electromagnetism was of interest to the bureau, so I joined in 1982. I was pretty much a nobody…just another scholar. Then there was a reported UFO sighting just outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1999. The case file ended up on my desk because the bureau wanted me to figure out how we could explain it away as ball lightning or some other such nonsense. I couldn’t. The data just didn’t support that theory at all so I started digging…the further I dug, the less the information added up. Finally, in August of 1998 I think it was, I must’ve dug too deep because my security clearance got cut and I was shipped off to a branch office in Arizona. For 18 months they stuck me with ‘busy work’ just to keep me quiet. After the Special Unit was disbanded, a new FBI Director took office and brought me back to Washington. He handed me some files and said ‘what do you make of all this John?’ They were the infamous Roswell Crash files…what were left of them anyway. I studied them extensively and then a few months ago, my instruments picked up a massive electromagnetic discharge in the New Mexico desert. It was you.” Harrison paused to let the information sink in.

“Us? What do you mean it was us?” Liz asked.

Alex slapped his forehead. “Electromagnetic disturbance! Of course! I read about that online once…my God I can’t believe it never occurred to me.” He looked up, noting the amusement on Harrison’s face.

“It was the lightning, wasn’t it? You picked up on Michael and Maria’s lightning show. Your meters probably went off the charts and there was no reason for it…except us.” Alex said.

“Precisely. That amazing thing you guys do with the lightning set off sensors all over the southwest. Your lightning show in Orlando was serious enough to fry all the electronic equipment within a ten-mile radius! I can honestly say that I never thought I’d see the day that a human was capable of harnessing such power.” John remarked in awe.

“Go Maria! You managed to fry every toaster in Florida! Now that’s power.” Kyle teased.

“I wouldn’t be so flippant about that if I were you young man.” Harrison cautioned. “Ever heard the phrase ‘with great power comes great responsibility’? Let’s think about this for a moment. What kind of products come equipped with electronic controls these days? Computers, medical equipment, stoplights, cars…hell, even your beloved toasters have em’ now. So what happens if all these things suddenly stop all working at once?”

“Oh wow. It would be total chaos! People never carry cash anymore so with all the equipment fried, they wouldn’t be able to buy or sell stuff. Their cars would be dead in the street but no one would be able to fix them because all the diagnostic equipment is electronic now too. Oh crap! And no microwave dinners!” Kyle said, his stomach growling loudly in protest.

“Now you’re starting to see the big picture here. I’m not trying to scare you or to imply you should stop using your powers for defense. I’m just suggesting that you keep in mind that your choices can and will have very serious consequences. Given the way you guys have taken such great pains to blend in to society, I just thought you should know that.” Harrison explained.

After all the information the two agents had just given them, Liz decided to volunteer a little bit of her own in return.

“You asked why I was so shocked when I heard your name Serena. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to explain that a little. See, a few years ago, someone came to me…someone who knew far too much about the future to be ignored. He told me about the end of the world…and it was all our fault.” Liz paused for a moment. Even after all this time, it was still painful for her to tell this story.

“He said that in the future, Kivar would come to Earth to assassinate ‘the Royal Four’…that’s Max, Michael, Isabel and Ava by the way. He said the government would detect Kivar’s arrival somehow and it would result in my friends having to defend themselves against both Kivar’s army and the US Army. He said a great war would break out and because of all the firepower between both sides; it would basically result in the end of the world. He told me that all my friends would be killed and our only hope of survival lie in the hands of a woman I had never met…her name was Serena. This Serena would be my friend in those days and she would help prevent the entire planet from being destroyed.” Liz explained in a rush.

John and Serena listened to the story in silence. Liz was quite obviously leaving out part of the story and they weren’t really sure why. What could be so shocking that she would have to hide it now, after all they’d already seen?

Isabel saw the agent’s doubt and explained a little further. “This man claimed to be from the future and since he knew things that no one could’ve possibly known unless they had lived all of this already, Liz realized he was telling the truth. He claimed that Liz would meet a woman named Serena and that this woman would be the one to help Liz send him back in time to change things for the better.”

Serena blinked in shock. “That couldn’t possibly have been me…future me…whatever. Even if we assume that time travel is possible, I would have no idea how to make it happen! That kind of thing is barely understood even at the highest levels of advanced physics…” Serena trailed off and looked at John in realization. He was the most gifted physicist in the country and if her future self knew anything at all about time travel, it would have been because the information came from him.

“Time travel is an interesting theory that has plagued physicists since the beginning of the recorded history. It could be possible, in theory, but the amount of energy it would require…we just haven’t got a source of power strong enough here on Earth to make it happen. At least we have never been aware of a power source like that…” John mused, clearly shaken by the revelation.

“I would appreciate it if we could keep this little bit of knowledge between us if you don’t mind. When this man came back from the future, he nearly made everything worse. In the wrong hands, that kind of information could be fatal.” Max pointed out.

“I agree.” Harrison said. “I am curious about one thing though. Why was the FBI attacking you? If they had done their homework, they would’ve known that they needed to join you…not fight you. What exactly did that man change?”

“He didn’t set out to change very much at all. He wanted to change one event…just one thing. His change caused this ripple effect though and now everything is different. When we first found out that you guys were on our trail, we were afraid he hadn’t changed enough but now it seems obvious that everything has been affected.” Max said.

Alex slapped his forehead in understanding. “I know exactly why the government is working with us instead of against us this time. My God, it’s so obvious I can’t believe we didn’t realize it earlier! In this timeline, we came back up on the FBI radar after that big practice session out in the desert where Maria did her lightning thing. That couldn’t have happened in the other timeline because Maria didn’t have powers. Liz was the only human who did but her powers are completely different. That means, in that other time, there was no huge electromagnetic disturbance to catch Agent Harrison’s attention. The FBI didn’t know we were the good guys because they never got the chance to find out. ”

Ava jumped in. “So, the FBI didn’t know what was really going on! Kivar and his band of merry men show up and cause this huge conflict. The dupes had to have been in on the whole thing and since they look just like we do…the government had no choice but to think we were a threat. They look just like us, so why not?”

Serena smiled. “I hate to interrupt a truly fascinating conversation about alternate realities and such but I’ve been waiting a long time to say something to Max…” She paused, remembering the grizzly scene in that Florida park as though it was yesterday.

“Max, I really want to thank you for protecting me during the battle with the imposters. I made a rash decision and stepped directly into the line of fire. If you hadn’t shielded me, I wouldn’t be here today. Thank you for that. I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am.” Serena said emotionally.

Max looked away uncomfortably. “In Liz’s premonition…you died. I don’t know if you ever heard that part during your surveillance, but it’s true. That’s probably why we were able to see so many of your memories later on. Apparently, when people say your life flashes before your eyes just before you die, they’re right. You tried to protect Isabel, Alex and I…knowing full well that you would probably die doing it. I just couldn’t let that happen.”

“So actually…we should be thanking you!” Isabel said with a relieved smile. “My brother was just returning the favor, so to speak.”

Harrison looked puzzled. “I know I’m going off on a tangent here but, what year did your mystery future man travel to? What I mean to say is; did this man come to you in 1999?”

Liz gasped. “How did you know that?!”

Harrison laughed at the irony. “Remember when I told you the government summoned me to investigate supposed UFO activity that year but I couldn’t explain it away as ball lightning like they wanted me to? Well none of my findings could support any kind of natural explanation for the energy disturbance that day. Of course they couldn’t because it never occurred to me that the disturbance could’ve been caused by time travel.”

“Well I guess our paths were destined to cross sooner or later.” Maria added with an amused smile.

The gang spent the next hour dancing around the subject of how everything had changed in this timeline versus the last, without elaborating on who the mystery man from the future was or how he got here. They might have forged a new alliance with these people, but that didn’t mean they had to spill all of their secrets at once.

Ever the gracious hostess, Isabel arranged a delicious lunch for everyone. The agents got to witness the podsquad’s dietary quirks in full detail. Serena watched in amusement as Michael doused his dessert with Tabasco and then devoured it with a satisfied grin.

After lunch, the agents left, vowing to return for another visit soon. They asked if they would be allowed to meet the royal soldiers during their next meeting. They were beyond curious about those men and women. They had already been informed that those soldiers arrived here barely a year ago from planets they had never heard of. The sociologist in Serena was dying to speak to them in person.

The frail new alliance was proving to be quite helpful for both the podsquad and the FBI. They were given a beautiful place to stay, real combat training that would be useful when they went back to Antar and most importantly, a little peace of mind.

True to their word, the powers-that-be sent some of the finest military men and women out to the ranch to train the podsquad twice a week. Michael, Maria, Ava and Kyle seemed to catch on to the lessons a bit faster than the other four did. Alex and Maria both were the stars of the hand-to-hand combat drills, but other than that, the ‘Rathemere clan’ was the clear winner in the military department. After a few weeks, the royal soldiers joined the training sessions and managed to learn a few things from the Earth soldiers while teaching them a few new tricks in the process. It was a genuine learning experience for them all.

Max, Isabel, Liz and Alex observed every political move the President and his cabinet made. Aside from their obvious blunder in losing track of Agent Pierce, they were generally a well-oiled political unit. The ‘Zandros clan’ learned a lot during their meetings with these influential men and women.

Because there were three houses on the ranch, the Roswell group still had to share their living quarters with others, but they had a heck of a lot more room to share now. These ‘houses’ would be better explained using the word ‘mansion’. Each one had at least six huge bedrooms, formal dining rooms, fully stocked libraries with first edition this and first edition that…you name it, these homes had it. At first, the extravagant retreat had seemed fairly excessive considering the President offered it to the Roswell crew as a ‘gift’. Who gives something like that away for free? As soon as they realized that they were being offered this ‘gift’ as a peace offering after all the damage Pierce had done, they decided it wouldn’t hurt to accept the gesture. It represented an act of goodwill on both sides. The six private bathrooms in each house alone made Isabel demand that they thank the President personally and agree to stay.

The parents and a few of the remaining soldiers took up residence in the largest of the homes. The group had toyed with the idea of splitting up the living quarters by family, but common sense finally won out over that idea. None of the couples were willing to split up and none of the parents were very eager to sleep just down the hall from their children and their significant others. Suffice it to say, there are just some things that a parent never wants to know about their children first-hand.

Ironically enough, the two remaining houses ended up being divided between the Zandros clan and the Rathemere clan. It just kind of worked out that way and no one really noticed the irony until after the two groups had settled in. Max, Liz, Isabel and Alex shared one of the homes. Michael, Maria, Ava and Kyle shared the other. A few of the royal soldiers stayed in each home, just for good measure. Everyone felt a bit safer with the guards nearby.

Things were finally starting to look up for the group. They had accepted their destiny over a year ago but none of them had foreseen this new alliance with the government. It seemed to be working well for all involved. The powers-that-be in the US government got the answers they needed and the podsquad got peace…finally.

Epilogue:

The Roswell group spent nearly a year getting used to their new lives at the secluded mountain ranch. They continued training weekly with the few military brass that had high enough security clearance to know they existed. Michael and Maria were clearly the top pupils in this makeshift arrangement. By the end of the year, they were already more than proficient at everything from hand-to-hand combat to flying the government’s most high tech aircraft. While the others were eventually relieved from their military training, Michael, Maria, Kyle and Ava carried on. After nearly a year of training and study, they were becoming well versed in law enforcement, government policy and the justice system.

Max, Liz, Isabel and Alex spent quite a bit of time working with the President and his most trusted advisors. They decided how much information they were willing to share with the government and when it was to be shared. There wasn’t much left to negotiate over with the President and his team, but they did have a lot to learn from them. They quickly learned that diplomacy truly is an art form and there isn’t necessarily just one way to solve a problem.

Both groups got the privilege of working with Agent Ford, the FBI’s top counterintelligence official, as well as one of his counterparts from the CIA. They learned everything there was to know about thinking two steps ahead of both your allies and your opponents. Throughout this experience, something they had known all along became more obvious than ever before. In order to be the leaders Antar needed, they would have to tread carefully, be decisive and always work together. When they pooled their collective talents, they were a force to be reckoned with. It didn’t matter if they were pooling their powers or pooling their thoughts, the results were the same. Their team was unbreakable.

The new alliance with the US government helped the gang find a little peace for once. Sure, most days were filled with training, meetings or self-prescribed studying, but they could finally do these things without fear. The government was keeping a keen eye on the skies and would alert the group to any new arrivals. The soldiers had the ranch compound heavily guarded. From its days as a Presidential retreat, the land was equipped with all sorts of high tech security devices. If the bad guys returned and the soldiers didn’t catch them first, the heat sensitive cameras and laser operated perimeter fences would. The Roswell group could finally afford to relax a little.

Six months into their new life, Amy and Jim finally started planning their wedding. Isabel immediately went into a wedding frenzy. For months there were fabric swatches and photos of floral arrangements scattered about all three of the homes. An official date hadn’t even been set but by the time it was, the plans would already be complete.

The chaotic experiences the gang had faced over the last year had only brought them closer. Max and Liz were finally able to have a shot at building their relationship without worrying about when the next shoe would drop. They were able to wake up in the morning without wondering where they were or wondering if their enemies were nearby. They could have breakfast together without having to rush off to class in the middle of the meal. They could curl up in bed together at night and know that this really wasn’t going to be the last time they did.

Ava and Kyle were finally comfortable enough in their own skin to turn their full attention toward each other. Early in their relationship, Ava had been self conscious about the fact that Tess, her double, had hurt him so badly. She felt guilty for cementing his place in this insanity because she bonded with him. Kyle on the other hand, had spent months wondering if Ava would ever truly open up to him. He had been afraid that she was regretting her choice to be part of his life. After a few months of peace at the ranch though, they both got past their secret fears and started building a life together.

Isabel and Alex fell into a content routine very quickly after moving into the ranch. When Isabel complained about the cold mountain mornings, Alex would light a fire in the fireplace and fold her into a warm embrace. When Alex would get concerned that he wasn’t cut out to be a great diplomat like the prophecy said, Isabel would gently remind him that she could never have made it through the last few years without his big heart and rock solid resolve. He could laugh at her controlling holiday nazi tendencies and she didn’t mind the sound of him clicking away at his new computer for hours on end at night. Their relationship was contented and sweet, but there was also a fiery passion that the two kept hidden away from the others, for their eyes only.

Michael and Maria changed very little after moving into the ranch. Their relationship had always been explosive and passionate. That much definitely hadn’t changed. They could be heard yelling at each other at least twice a week, but the yelling was always followed by a forgiving silence as they made up. Michael did learn to let his guard down a bit more after a few months in the house. He finally felt like he had a real family. He shared a house with his mate, his sister and by Antarean standards, his brother-in-law. They were the new Rathemere clan. As that fact finally set in, Michael could be heard laughing out loud a little more often and enjoying meals that included actual conversation instead of just random grunts. He rarely ever threatened to punch Kyle for touching his sister anymore either, which was a very welcomed change where Kyle was concerned.

Kyle and Maria surprised the others a bit with their budding friendship. Now that they were practically related by both Earth and Antarean standards, they were starting to argue less and talk more. They found they had a lot of the same hopes and fears in common during these talks. They both struggled to ignore fears about what would happen when they were finally called to Antar. Would the people hate them because they were human? Would their human status become an embarrassment for Michael and Ava? They kept these fears private, a subject that was only discussed with each other. Ironically, their fears helped bring them closer together, almost as though they had been siblings for years.

It was now the spring of 2003. The gang still had another five years until the Granilith was programmed to reactivate and transport them to the Alpha system. On August first in the year 2008, the Granilith would take them all to Kira, the Queen Mother of Antar. Would they be prepared for that day? Would they be able to make a difference when they got there? Those questions plagued the minds of the whole group but there was no way to know the answer. The best they could do was live life to the fullest over the next five years and learn as much as they could in the process.

THE END
