Chapter 28

Max closed the door firmly behind them. After instructing Lucy to hold his calls unless it was his wife and not to interrupt them under any circumstances, he turned back to toward his office, fully expecting Jake to follow. Once inside the large office, Jake took a moment to take in its surroundings. It was the same size as his back home in New York, but unlike his bare walls and cold feelings, the office walls were covered with beautiful paintings and had a very homely feeling to it.

“What do you want” Max asked, not wasting any time? Jake turned to him, clutching his hat in his hands as he eyed Max’s defensive stance.

“I was hoping we could talk, you know . . . man to man” he answered with a casual tone. Max only glared at him, crossing his arms over her chest. Clearly portraying the hate he felt for him. “Look, Max, I know I may not be your favorite person right now, but I think we should at lest sit down and discuss the situation like adults . . . for Amber’s sake” as soon as his daughter’s name passed the other mans lips, Max felt his ire raise, and he pushed off the door in which he had been leaning against.

“For Amber’s sake” he gawked in disbelief, “Have you even considered what your sudden ‘paternal instinct’ could do to her if she found out” Max had to take several deep breaths to calm himself.

“I have” Jake replied, unaffected by his hostile attitude. He was a lawyer and had faced plenty of hothead lawyers and judges in his past. For the last two weeks he had done nothing but think about the bright-eyed little girl. He had thought about what she looked like when she was born. About what her first words were...when her first steps were. He thought about what her favorite food or color was. Did she like school...what was her favorite subject? He had thought a lot about those things and many more. Also in the mist of wondering, he wonders how she would feel if she found out that he was her father. Would she be angry at him? Would she accept him? But most of all, was he doing the right thing by her by coming to ask Max for a paternity test.

“What’s the matter Jakey” his mother asked as she sat down at the table across from him? She took in his haggard appearance and faraway look, a cry difference from his usual tailored three piece suits and neatly trimmed locks. “Is it the case? Did it not go as well as you hoped” she pondered?

“No Momma, it’s not the case” he answered vaguely. He hadn’t informed her of what had been going on in his life lately.

“Then what is it?” she probed. Jake ran a hand through his tousled hair, expelling a heavy sigh. He looked up at his mother who was waiting patiently for him to speak. So he did. He told her everything about the party, about Lillian and his feelings for her, about Max and finally about Amber. When he was finished, she only sat there silently. Bea Paterson stared at her son with disappointment, before her hand flew upside his head.

“Ouch momma, what was that for” he whined, rubbing his head.

“I know I didn’t raise you to jump into bed with anyone like some common man whore” she glared at him. Jake winced at his mothers vulgar words. Being a staunch Christian, she very rarely cursed or had a bad word to say about others.

“I know momma” he whispered softly, shamefully. Standing from the table, he made his way over to the fridge. He pulled out a bottle of apple juice, taking a drink as he leaned up against the counter. “It wasn’t like I set out to have sex with her” he sighed, “I mean I had been drinking and so had she...and one thing led to another and it just happened and now I may have a daughter” he moaned, tossing his head back in order to keep the tears at bay.

“How come you never spoke to her afterwards...I know I taught you better then that” she chastised?

“You did” he answered quickly. All his life she had taught him to respect women. Had thought to treat them the way he would want a man to treat his own daughter. “After I sobered up and got my head back on straight, I went to talk to her a few days later” he revealed.

“And?”

“And, she was with him” he answered thickly. He felt the pain return once again as he remembered going over to her house, hoping to apologize for his actions. It was out of character for him to have a one night stand, and even worse, he had feelings for Lillian, and he didn’t want her to think that was all he was about. He thought, hopefully, they could get to know each other better, maybe start something. When he had got there, he hadn’t been expecting the scene he pulled up on. There she was sitting on the porch, her hair blowing in the wind. She was bundled in a large overcoat, and he watched as she tried desperately to keep warm. He was about to step out of his car when he saw Max step in his line of vision, making his way up toward the porch. He watched as she stood and they awkwardly regarded each other. He had felt his heart drop as he ran his fingers over her cheek and she placed one of her small hands over his. A few words were shared between them before he was pulling her into his arms. He watched the way she clung to him and him to her and he knew, knew that he would never have a chance with her. Dejectedly, he had gone home, returning to school earlier then he had planned.

“That’s why you left so early back then” she concluded astutely?

“Yeah” he answered tiredly. They sat in silence for what seemed like forever when he turned tearful eyes to his mother. “What I’m I suppose to do momma? I don’t want to cause trouble or anything...but I-I can’t go back to New York not knowing.” Bea placed a comforting hand over her sons.

“Have you thought about what this could possibly do to the child” she asked him softly? She knew Jake was a responsible man, and having grown up without a father, he had always vowed to be a better father to his children then his had ever been to him. “I know you’re a responsible man Jakey, and I know you will do what is right, but you have to know that if you pursue this, Amber could wind up hurt. She’s ten-years-old, and Max is the only father she knows, do you really want to take that from her?” She watched him shake his head no.

“But because I didn’t know about her, I’m supposed to just walk away, not have a chance to know her...for her to know me?” he asked in agony.

“I know it doesn’t seem fair and I’m not telling you what to do, but what if it’s determined that she is yours. What then? Would you want visitations...custody...are you willing to give up your career for her...to rip apart her world? Jake, I see that you’re hurting and confused over this, but I want you to think about this long and hard before you make any decisions and no matter what you decide, I’ll always stand by you” she stood, placing a motherly kiss on his forehead before leaving him to his thoughts.

“It’s all I’ve been able to think about for the last two weeks” he answered honestly. “I know I’m probably not your favorite person right now...” Max snorted, but Jake continued, “...I know if I was in your shoes, I would hate me too, but if you could just put yourself in my shoes...understand it from my position...”

“No, I can’t...because I could never be a selfish bastard like you” Max cut him off. “Do you even know what Amber’s been through...that her mother left when she was born...”

“I know” Lillian had actually showed up at his door. At first he hadn’t wanted to let her in, but she had begged and pleaded with him to hear her out. So he had let her in. To say he hadn’t been expecting to hear the things that she had confessed. She told him about her addiction and the way she had left Amber because of said addiction. By the time she had left later that evening, he had been completely shell shocked.

“Then you know that she doesn’t need any more added stress in her life” Max bit out bitterly?

“I’m not trying to cause her stress Max...all I’m asking for is to have a paternity test done...to know the truth.”

“The truth is, Amber is my daughter and nothing some fucking test could say will ever change that” his patience, were growing thin the longer Jake sat in his office.

“How would you feel if you found out that you could possibly have a child that you knew nothing about” Jake asked, trying to take a different approach at the situation?

“I know I wouldn’t just barge into their life demanding things I have no right to” he snarled? Seeing that he was getting nowhere, Jake looked Max in the eyes.

“Like it or not Max...Lillian and I were together, and I’m not proud of the way it happened, but it happened...but there is a child involved, a child that may be mine...that I would like to know if she is mine” he spoke honestly, letting his intentions known that if Amber is proven to be his, he wanted to be in her life.

He didn’t see it coming, but he definitely felt the sting of it as Max’s fist connected with his jaw. Max grabbed the lapel of his coat, slamming him up against the wall “Get the fuck out...and stay the hell away from my daughter” Max growled.

“Maxwell” Michael grabbed him after hearing the commotion outside. Max struggled against him, wanting to punch the hell out of Jake again.

“Let me go” he jerked away from Michael, his breathing erratic.

Jake wiped the blood from his busted lip, “I really hope you’d reconsider Max” he stated calmly as he fixed his coat and began to pull on his gloves.

“Not likely” Max returned bitterly, “Good bye Jake” Jake straightened tall before turning on his heels and leaving a very pissed off Max and a confused Michael in his wake.

Thanksgiving
One week later....

“Liz, Love...please sit down” Max pleaded, ceasing her hands from where they were mixing the stuffing. He led her over to the table. Sitting down, he pulled her into his lap. “Liz, you have to slow down. You’ve been up since four this morning. You need to rest” his hand rubbed the swell of her belly. Things had pretty hectic around the house, with Thanksgiving, visiting relatives, the situation with Amber. Their lives were one big roller coaster. Liz has been a real trooper throughout it all, but Max wasn’t blind, he could see the worry in her face, the tiredness in her eyes, and if he wasn’t mistaking, she was losing weight, definitely not a good thing for someone entering their sixth month of pregnancy. “I knew I shouldn’t have agreed to you throwing this dinner party” he sighed. Their entire family was coming to their house for Thanksgiving dinner, and Liz was spreading herself thin trying to make sure everything was perfect.

“Max, you know I can’t sit down. There’s too much to do...I still have to make the punch...prepare Amber’s Pineapple Upside Down cake...go to the grocery store because I forgot the cranberry sauce...and...” Max captured her lips with his before she could continue her rambling. When he pulled back, Liz was in a daze, and he used it to his advantage. Picking her up in his arms with little effort, he carried her upstairs to their bedroom. The soft bed against her back broke Liz out of her haze and she began to protest.

“Shh, you need to rest Liz” he moved down to her feet and removed her shoes, noticing how her ankles were slightly swollen.

“But Max...I have to finish dinner” she pouted.

“I’ll take care of dinner” he assured, sliding up beside her. He leaned on his elbow stroking the side of her face. “You just stay in bed and get some sleep...relax” he encouraged. He hovered over her, placing a sweet kiss upon her lips. When he went to pull away, she wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him firmly against her. Max groaned as her tongue dipped into his mouth, gliding gracefully against his own. Innately, his hand cupped her hip, turning her body flush against him. The kiss grew more heated, passionate, and Liz ran her hand under his shirt, tweaking his right nipple.

“Mmm” Max tried to pull away. He knew she needed to rest. After all, that was the main reason he had brought her up to their bed. But damn she felt so good...maybe he could enjoy the feel of her lips just a minute longer. Liz felt him trying to pull away, and threw her leg over his hips, trapping him against her.

“Liz” he managed once the need for air became demanding. Liz began placing kisses underneath his jaw, down his neck before suckling vigorously on his collarbone. She rubbed herself against his thigh, as best as she could with her expanding belly in the way. “Liz” he moaned once again, seizing her gyrating hips in his hand. “You’re supposed to be r-resting” he shivered as her fingers dipped in his sweat pants, stroking his member.

“I am” she whispered huskily, “Max,” she purred against his ear, “I want you” Max closed his eyes tightly, fighting for an ounce of control. He captured her hand in his, bringing it to his lips. Placing loving kisses upon her knuckles, Max reluctantly removed her leg from around him.

“As much as I would love to be inside you right now, you need to sit back and relax” he kissed her on the forehead.

“But what better way for me to relax” she cooed, running her finger suggestively over his chest, “I mean don’t you want to help me relax Max” she cupped his manhood, raising a challenging eyebrow at him. Max swallowed hard, his breathing coming in irregular spurts. Seeing him wavering, Liz leaned over so that her mouth was only centimeters from his. “Please don’t make me beg...I need you” she whispered, licking his bottom lip teasingly. Before she could pull away, Max captured her head between his large hands, crushing her lips to his. Liz giggled as his hands worked urgently at the tiny buttons of her shirt.

“Fuck” Max mumbled against her lips as he encountered the multiple buttons. Sitting up, he ripped it down the center, sending buttons flying everywhere. “You do know you’re evil right...this is so wrong” he moaned as he cupped her breast. He sucked a lace-covered nipple into his mouth and bit down gently. Liz raked her hand through his hair, arching forward, aching for more.

“But it feels so right...Max...please” she sighed, rubbing against him, hoping to relieve the burn within her. Max released her nipple, nodding slightly. He quickly removed his shirt as Liz stripped him of his sweats and boxers. Once she had freed him from his clothes, she climbed off the bed and shed her own clothes. Max held out a hand, helping her as she climbed carefully onto the bed, straddling his naked hips. Max smiled inwardly with pride as she sat above him all round with their child. Encasing his erection in his hand, he rubbed the swollen head against her wetness, causing her to moan and him to bite his lip to keep from losing it too soon. Once his member was coated with her honey, he helped her ease down on him. He had only managed to slip the head in when she inhaled sharply.

“Wait” she paused, the slight discomforts of being pregnant, seizing her movement. Max stared up at her in concern.

“Are you okay” he asked, ready to pull out?

Liz dug her fingers into his chest as she eased down on him slow. “Yeah, just...just don’t move okay” Max nodded, running her thighs comfortingly. Again it took everything in him not to slam up into her. Finally she had managed to take all of him in, and she sat still for a moment, breathing heavily. Just when Max was about to ask her if she was alright, she began to move above him.

“You know you can move” she giggled as he lay static beneath her.

“Right” he smiled, slowly grinding into her. Using her knees for leverage, Liz rose up until he was nearly out of her, before lowering herself back down torturously slow. They rocked against each other in a desperate urgency. They hadn’t made love in the last week with so much going on. So Max took his time in loving her. His hands slid up her sides, coming around to cup her soft mounds, twisting the hardened peaks between his fingers. He watched in fascination as her pace increased and her walls clutched around him.

“Oh Max...Max...Max” she cried out his name, so close but not quite able to gasp hold of it. She groaned in frustration, bringing his hand to where they were joined. Max knew what she needed. He began rubbing her tiny bundle of nerves in tight circles with the pad of his thumb. Planting his feet firmly into the mattress, he drove up into her with primal force.

“Maaxx” she stilled above him, her head falling back in pure satisfaction as her orgasm ripped through her. Max could see the evidence of her release glistening over his member, drizzling down to settle into his nestle of dark hairs. The sight causing him to swell within her, shooting his liquid heat into her dark cavern.

“Liizz” her lax body slumped to his side, resting her head in the crook of his arm. Max cradled her protectively at his side. His hand ran soothingly over her dampened skin.

Liz tossed her arm over his chest, placing a lazy kiss on his neck. “Thank you” she yawn, snuggling in deeper. Before long, her breathing had even out, and Max knew that she had fallen asleep. He lay there for a little longer, before climbing out of bed. He quickly got dressed. Pulling the covers over Liz’s naked form, he made his way downstairs. Max was surprised to see Amber sitting in the living room watching Cheaper by the Dozen.

“What are you doing here?” he asked as he sat down beside her, “I thought you were coming home this evening.”

“Got bored” was her only reply, not turning her head from the movie. “Where’s mom?”

“Resting” he answered, watching the screen for a moment.“I’m going to finish dinner” he pushed up from the couch. “Wantta help?” Amber looked up at him then back at the television. Picking up the remote, she clicked it off.

“Sure” she smiled following him into the kitchen.

“What are you doing” Amber asked a few minutes later as she watched him put way to much salt in the potatoes?

“What?” he asked clueless.

“That’s too much” she frowned.

“Nah, it’ll be fine” he assured, scooping a sample up and bringing it to his mouth. The moment the salty concoction hit his tastebud, Max grimaced in horror. “Maybe we should start on the cakes” he suggested, scraping the ruined potatoes in the trash.

“Okay.” Max grabbed Liz’s recipe box and pulled out the ones for Carmel and Pineapple Upside Down cake.

“What the hell is Pet milk” he questioned, scratching his brow in confusion as he read over the recipes. Amber looked up from where she was cutting up onions. The pot on the stove drawing her attention from her dads question.

“Daddy! The eggs” the water had boiled out of them and the moment Max went to retrieve them, one of them burst, causing them both to hit the floor.

“Shit” Max exclaimed once he thought the coast was clear. He stuck the pot under the running water, hearing the hissing and cracking of the eggs as the cold water hit them. He began mumbling a string of curses under his breath as he dumped the mess down the disposer. Max turned around to see his daughter was gone.

“Hello”. Diane’s cheery voice came over line.

“Granny” Amber whispered into the phone.

“Hi sweetheart, what’s wrong” she asked, wondering why she was whispering?

“I think we need your help” Amber loved her daddy dearly, but he wasn’t very skilled when it came to cooking. Sure he could make breakfast food fine, but when it came down too really cooking, her daddy was seriously lacking in that department. Before Liz entered their lives, they lived off fast food and waffles. She went on to tell her granny what was going on, and Diane eagerly agreed to come right over with reinforcement. When she hung up the phone, she turned to see her daddy leaning against the wall, his eyebrow raised.

“What?” she smiled innocently. “We needed help...I would like to be able to eat sometime this century” she teased.

“Why you little...” Max rushed toward her and began tickling her sides, sending her into a fit of giggles.

~~~~~~~~~~
When Liz walked into her kitchen some three hours later, it was bubbling with action.
“Hi sweetheart” Diane smiled, kissing her on the cheeks as she whizzed by.
“How are you feeling” Isabel asked, from where she kneaded some dough at the island?
“Refreshed” she smiled, rubbing a hand over her round belly.
“Here...have a seat” Nancy gushed, pulling her over to the table.
“What are you guys doing here...where’s Max” she pondered?
“We kicked him out” Maria replied as she prepared the punch, “I love him dearly, but the mans a disaster in the kitchen” she giggled, thinking that was definitely the kettle calling the pot black. Although she did have to agree, knowing her husband’s handicap in the kitchen. She stood up, intent on helping.
“What are you doing” Tess admonished, grabbing the bowl out of her hand?
“Helping.”
“Oh no you don’t...Max told us how you’ve been wearing yourself out over this dinner, and we won’t be having none of that” Amy scalded.
“But I should be helping” she tried to retrieve the bowl once again, but received a firm glare from her mother.
“Out Lizzie...we will take care of everything...you go sit in the living room and relax.”
“But mom” Liz whined, not liking the fact that she was being kicked out of her own kitchen.
“Out!” they all said in unison. Liz pouted, folding her arms across her chest, she stalked into the living room, flopping down on the sofa next to her husband.
“Thanks for snitching on me” she pinched his side. Max jumped out of her offensive fingers reach. He rubbed his bruised side, smiling as she stuck out her bottom lip in a pout.
“Don’t be that way Love” he captured her feet, placing them in his lap. He began to massage them gently. “If it makes you feel better...they kicked me out too.”
Chapter 29
Family and friends began to file in around six that evening. Everyone was laughing and catching up on what had been going on since they were all last together. Michael was squirming in his seat as his mom hounded him about his sister. By now, they all knew about what was going on with Max, Amber, Lillian and Jake...that is everyone but Amber.
“Well, have you talked to your sister” Fran asked in disdain.
“Have you” he returned hotly? Every since Lillian had returned and they had learned the real reason behind her disappearance. Instead of seeing their part in the whole situation, they had called her spoiled and inconsiderate and had washed their hands of her.
“You watch your tone Junior” she sneered. “Lillian knows how to contact us, but she chooses not too” she replied indifferently as she brushed at an imaginary piece of lint on her sweater.
“Have you given her a reason to want to contact you” even though he knew she had messed up, and he had been angry with her for leaving, Michael loved his sister and wanted to patch things up with her, find a way to forgive her? When he had found out about what was going on currently, he had been torn between hating her for the hurt and pain that she might cause Amber, and being sympathetic because he now had a better understanding of just how sick she truly was back then.
He had gone by her room two days ago, when she had suddenly stopped calling him. They would talk to each other practically every night, meeting once or twice a week for lunch or dinner. He wouldn’t let Maria know, because she made it plainly clear that she despised Lillian, and refused to have her in their home. So he would always meet her somewhere, stating that Maria wasn’t feeling well.
“It’s okay Michael,”she smiled, sipping her coffee, “I know Maria dislikes me, and I don’t want to cause any friction between you guys” she had once told him. Then Maria had come home one day last week and she was fuming over her and Liz’s run in with Lillian. To say the least, he had to listen to her rant and rave the rest of the night. When he had talked to his sister that evening, she had apologized profusely, stating that she was just frustrated with the whole situation. She had even gone as far as asking to speak to Maria so she could apologize personally, but of course Maria had only glared at him and mumbled incoherently under her breath. It was after that phone call that she had stopped calling and he grew worried.
Michael stood impatiently outside the door. He had been knocking for the last ten minutes and hadn’t gotten an answer yet. He had been calling her for the last three days to no avail.
“Lillian” he called through the door. He knew she was there because the front desk had informed her that she hadn’t left the room for the last few days. He was about to leave when he decided to check the door. To his surprise it was unlocked. Pushing the door open he stepped inside. The place was eerily quiet. He took in his surroundings and noticed that the shades were drawn closed...several clothes strolled around the room and empty take-out carriers littered the small table in the corner. Taking the few steps that led to the bedroom, he pushed opened the door only to find it too empty. His ears suddenly perked from a noise coming from the bathroom. Making his way toward it, he slid opened the door to find Lillian perched upon the bathroom floor, her face buried in her arms as they rested on her knees.
“Lillian?” he spoke softly as he slid down the wall next to her. He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, and she raised her tear stained face to him.
“I’ve screwed everything up” she cried, sniffling loudly.
“Yeah...you did” Michael sighed, pulling her against him, resting her head on his shoulders.
“Here” she said, pushing something into his hand. Michael stared at the little vial for a second before he realized what it was.
“You didn’t?” Michael felt her shake her head no against his shoulder and let out a relieved sigh.
“No...but that didn’t mean I didn’t want to” she admitted honestly. God how she had wanted to. It was funny, she had been sitting in her room and suddenly it seemed like everything just started coming in on her and she had to get some air. She walked for some time, and eventually found herself standing in front of the old rickety building. She looked up at it, surprised that it hadn’t been condemned and knocked down already. She remembered the many nights she had spent there, just drowning her feelings in hypothermic needles.
“You looking for something” a guy had asked her, taking in her high class look. He knew her type. They only came to his side of town when they were looking for a good hit. Lillian just stared at him shifting nervously. “Come on sweetheart, you got troubles? I got something to take them all away” he smirked. Lillian thought about it, her mind debating...overloading.
“Let me get a twenty” she finally said reaching into her purse. The guy grinned, reaching into his coat pulling out a small vial. They quickly went their separate ways, and Lillian made her way back to her room. Making her way to the bathroom, she shut the door behind her. She had stared at the little rocks contained in the vial for a long time, hadn’t even noticed she had been crying until her tears turned into uncontrollable sobs.
“What stopped you” Michael asked curiously?
“Amber...” she brushed at her tears, “...and you. All I could think about was that I felt alone..and I wanted to ignore everything...escape. Then I got to thinking how I’d hurt everyone I love because of what was inside that vial. How because of it I had missed so much of her life...your life. I knew that once I opened it, everything I had accomplished, had done would have been for nothing” she sat up, her hands shaking slightly as she ran them through her hair. “I’m just tired of messing up Micky” she whispered softly. Michael pulled her back into his arms.
“Shh, everything will work out” he promised. The two siblings sat side by side on the bathroom floor, talking into the night.
“Now you listen here son...” Fran snapped, pinning her son with a deadly glare. “It was your sisters choice to get herself caught up the way she did...” she started, but was cut off by Michael’s angry voice.
“Do you have any idea what you put us through...all the shit we had to put up with to please you and dad...” his loud voice drawing Max’s attention?
“What’s going on in here” Max asked tentatively as he stepped into the room? Michael only continued to glare at his mother, her mouth still hanging open in shock.
“Nothing” he made a quick exit, leaving Max and Fran in awkward silence.
Dinner held a slight tension in the air as Michael and his mother continued to shoot daggers at each other. Finally she had, had enough and quietly said her goodnights to Amber and everyone. Afterwards the women all gathered in the living room to watch the game Max had recorded, while the men grumbled and cursed as they cleaned the kitchen. The older men entertained the kids.
“I can’t believe we’re stuck busting suds, while they get to watch the game” Kyle complained as he scrubbed the skillet.
“Well if you would stop bitching, we could be finished quicker” Michael growled. Kyle smiled, flipping him off in the process. Max, Alex and Tad just laughed at the two bantering. Suddenly the doorbell rung, and everyone stopped in confusion, wondering who could be at the door when their entire family was inside the house.
Max and Liz meet in the foyer, exchanging puzzled looks. Max pulled opened the door, revealing an older man in a suit.
“Can I help you” Max asked politely?
“Are you Maxwell Evans” he questioned?
“I am. Who are you?” the man reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a brown envelope.
“This is for you” he said, handing it to Max. “I would have been here earlier, but it being Thanksgiving and all, the little lady wouldn’t let me leave without dinner” he chuckled. “Well, good evening folks...Happy Thanksgiving” he made his way down the porch.
“Max, what is that” Liz asked as he closed the door?
“I don’t know” he answered, opening the envelope. Pulling out the papers, his eyes harden as he read over the contents. “I don’t believe this shit” he ground out through clutched jaws.
“What?” Liz stood on her toes trying to read over his shoulder.
“He’s taking me to court for a paternity test...son of a bitch.”
“What!” she shrieked, ripping the papers from his hands, needing to read it for herself.
“What’s going on” Phillip asked entering the foyer, the others right behind him? Max looked down at Amber who had pushed her way up front. Max looked pleadingly to his mom, who quickly understood.
“Come on kids, why don’t we go upstairs and I’ll put a movie on for you guys” they all let out an excited yeah and rushed upstairs, but Amber looked hesitantly between her parents before slowly climbing the stairs.
“Max?” Liz inquired in worry as he left them standing in the foyer without a word. She quickly followed behind him, watching as he poured himself a drink. Max paced in agitation back and forward, well aware of the eyes that followed his every movement.
“Max, what’s happening son” Phillip placed a hand on his arm, stopping his pacing. Max sighed, retrieving the papers from Liz, he handed them to his father.
“Jake’s taking me to court” he bit out, clutching the glass in his hand so tightly, his knuckles were turning white. Seeing the tension in his face, Liz removed the glass, rubbing her hand up and down his back trying to calm him down.
“What? Can he do that...daddy” Isabel turned panicking eyes to her father? Phillip continued to scan the legal document, ignoring her questioned all together.
“It doesn’t matter” he growled, “there’s no way in hell that I will consent to a paternity test. There isn’t a fucking judge in all of Georgia that can make me” his anger was evident as he tilted his chin stubbornly.
“Max, lets just sit down and discuss this” Phillip tried to reason.
“There’s nothing to discuss” he shrugged, “Amber is my daughter and no hotshot lawyer from New York is going to intimidate me just because he had a freaking one night stand with Lillian. As far as I’m concerned, the both of them can go to hell.”
“Max, just listen to your father for a minute” Diane spoke. She had come down after she had gotten the kids settled in Amber’s room watching a movie. Max let out a defiant huff. He felt his wife’s hand wrap around his forearm as her other rubbed his back gently.
“Love, just listen...please” she was scared, not sure what this all could mean...but most of all, she was scared of what the test would reveal. Hearing the plea in her voice, Max finally sat down with a defeated sigh.
“Fine” he whispered. Running a tired hand over his face, Max turned to hear what his father had to say.
As they all tried to calm Max down, no one noticed the small figure standing in the hall with wet eyes, and a shattered heart, listening to every word.
~~~~~~~~

Lillian sat on the sofa, eating a bag of popcorn as she watched a movie, trying to occupy her mind with something other then missing her daughter. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Thinking that it was the room service she had ordered, she made her way to the door. When she opened it, she got the shock of her life as Amber stared up at her.

“Amber,” she smiled, “What are you doing here...how did you get here” she asked looking down the hall for Max?

“Is it true” she asked sharply, causing Lillian’s smile to waver? “IS IT” she shouted, her face red with anger?

“W-what?”

“That he may not be my daddy” her voice had decreased to a small whisper as she tried to suppress her tears? Lillian felt the breath escape her body as she realized what she was asking.

“Amber, let me explain...”

“I don’t want to hear any more of your explanations...” she shook her head, brushing angrily at the tears that had dared to fall, “I just want the truth...yes or no...IS. IT. TRUE?” Lillian stared down at her. Her own tears flooding her eyes.

“I-I...yes, it’s true” she lowered her head shamefully. Silence fell over them as they stood in the hall.

“I hate you” she whispered calmly, “I hate you so much...I-I wish you had never come back...I wish you would just go back to London and leave us alone” her eyes, cold as ice sliced through Lillian like a hot knife through butter. She could only stand there an empty shell as she watched her daughter walk away. She did nothing to stop her, knowing that she deserved every word that was thrown at her.

Sorry...got side tracked.

Chapter 30

“You okay?” Michael asked, sitting down beside his niece in the hotel lobby. Lillian had called him on his cell informing him of what happened. She didn’t want her out at night by herself. She wasn’t even sure how she had even gotten to the motel. When she was sure Amber wouldn’t spot her, she followed her downstairs, fully intent on making sure she got home safely. Lillian had watched her as instead of exiting the motel, Amber sat down in the huge lobby sofa, staring absently at her hands as they rested in her lap. Knowing that any attempts she made to Max wouldn’t be welcomed, she had called Michael to come and get her.

Amber looked over at her uncle, noticing his concerned look. She shrugged before focusing back on the centerpiece on the table before her.

“Want to talk about it” he asked softly?

“No” she snapped.

“Okay” he nodded, not taking offense to her tone. Instead, he too focused on the centerpiece. “You know” he said after a short pause, “they should really fire their decorators, because that is one ugly centerpiece” he observed. He looked over at her with a raised eyebrow and a tiny smile on his face. Amber couldn’t help it and smiled back, nodding in agreement. Another pause fell over them, but this time it was Amber that broke the silence.

“Every ones been lying to me” she whispered, hurt lacing her voice.

“No...that’s not w-”

“You all knew right” she challenged, her crystal blue eyes boring into his? Michael sighed heavily, running a hand through his hair.

“Yeah” he answered truthfully. Amber managed a tight nod, returning her gaze ahead.

“So you all knew...yet no one told me.”

“We were trying to protect you. We knew how hard this would have been on you, and we didn’t want to put you through that kind of pain...the pain you’re in right now” Amber listened with half an ear, she could feel her hands began to shake and she fought desperately to control them.

“Amber?” Michael started to grow worried when she didn’t say anything.

“Can you take me home?”

“Yeah” Michael stood, extending his hand to her. Amber slid her small hand into his and allowed him to pull her to her feet.

“You do know you can’t run out in the night like that?” he spoke gently as the walked to his truck, “Your mom and dad were worried about you.” She only nodded, letting him led her to his truck.

“Thank God” Liz breathed in relief when she swung opened the door revealing Michael and Amber. Max stood anxiously beside her. Everyone had gone home already with the promise that they would be called once they returned. Michael carried his sleeping niece inside the house. She had fallen asleep the moment they left the motel and he couldn’t blame her. She was drained emotionally, and if he were in her shoes, he would sleep too to escape the pain.

“I got her” he grunted when Max went to take her out of his arms. Carefully he made his way up the stairs to her room, Liz and Max following quietly behind him. He laid her down, gently stripping her of her shoes and coat before tucking her under the covers. He placed a kiss on her forehead. Michael walked over to Max and Liz.

“Thank you Michael” Liz pulled him into a hug. Michael returned it the best he could with her belly in the way.

“Listen, she’s really upset...and she won’t be able to handle it if you continue to keep the truth from her” they both nodded, staring longingly at their daughter. “I’m going to head out” he mumbled heading out into the hall.

“Michael” Max called, causing him to stop at the top of the stairs, “I...I just want to say sorry...about earlier...you know the things I said about Lillian...I...” he fumbled. He had been pissed and upset, but regardless he had disrespected her in front of Michael. If any one ever said the things he had said about Lillian about his sister in front of him, he would have beaten the crap out of them.

“Save it Maxwell” Michael sighed heavily, “That’s your opinion, and I can’t tell you how to feel. I’ll see you tomorrow” he made a quick exit, leaving Max to stare after him.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Liz placed her hand over his knee, stopping the frantic bouncing. “Would you relax” she soothed, running her hand up and down his thigh? Max looked over at her, nodding slightly before entwining their fingers together. As much as he tried, there was no way he was going to relax. They were sitting in the conference room of Judge Denison, waiting on everyone to arrive. After his father had sat down with him and talked, Max finally agreed to a conference with Jake. It had been two weeks since that dreadful day of Thanksgiving. They had sat down with Amber and done as Michael suggested. They told her everything. There had been tears...screams of hate...more tears...denial...and when she was finished, she had collapsed in a fit of tears, clinging to the both of them in desperate need.
“What time is it” he asked his father, even though he had a perfectly good watch on his arm? Seeing his agitation, Phillip felt sympathy for him.
“9:45" he replied, “Don’t worry Max, we’re not suppose to start until ten. We’ll be starting soon” he patted his sons shoulder comfortingly. The large oak door opened, causing Max to look up in anticipation. Jake walked in dressed in a fancy suit, they locked eyes and Max’s hand clutched tightly around Liz’s. At his side was a slightly older man carrying an expensive leather briefcase. They sat down across from them at the large oval table. The air was thick with tension as Max and Jake had a silent battle of wills. The door opened once again, and Lillian stepped in. Lillian took a look around at all the tight faces, and sighed heavily before taking a seat a few chairs down from Max and Liz. She fiddled nervously with the strap of her purse, feeling Jake’s concerned eyes on her and Max’s equally heated ones as well.
Jake took in her haggard appearance. She was dressed in a nice business suit, her hair pinned up in a tight bun, looking every bit professional as if she had all the confidence in the world. But her eyes, her eyes lacked the confidence her outward appearance portrayed. Dark patches decorated her eyes and her face was hollow...pale. As much as he hated to admit it, he still had feelings for her. Despite everything that was happening, the feelings that he felt when he first saw her in that grocery store, were still there. He tried to ignore them, tried to bury them deep down in the land of forget. She looked so lost that he wanted to just get up and go wrap his arms around her, but his pride wouldn’t allow it.
The door opened drawing the attention once again. “Ah, I’m glad to see you all have arrived...” Judge Denison greeted as he took the large leather chair at the head of the table. “Mr. Evans...so good to see you again” he motioned to Phillip, having came across him several times during his career.
“Your Honor” he nodded.
“And you must be Maxwell and Elizabeth” he concluded looking over his documents.
“Yes” they answered in unison. He then turned to Jake.
“Mr. Paterson” he acknowledged.
“Yes sir...this is my attorney Wade Gipson.”
“Mr. Gipson” he addressed. Finally he turned to Lillian.
“Ms. Guerin, is your counselor on the way” he asked, noticing she sat alone?
“No sir” she spoke barely above a whisper.
“Well is he here already?”
“I don’t have an attorney Your Honor...I don’t feel the need for one” she shrugged, once again toying with her purse strap. Judge Denison nodded.
“Okay then...shall we get started?” he placed his reading glasses on the tip of his nose as he picked up some files. “Lets see, this matter is involving Paterson verses Evans for paternity of one Amber Louise Evans...shall we began?”
~~~~~~~~~~~

“...and all I’m saying is why should my client have to suffer when he didn’t even know that this child existed. How was he suppose to be in her life?” Wade Gipson retaliated hotly. They had been going at it for the last hour. Things had grown extremely heated between Max and Jake, and the judge had ordered them both to silence, while he dealt with just the lawyers. Throughout all the shouting, finger pointing and accusations, Liz stood by her husband in support. Lillian never said a word unless she was addressed personally. Otherwise she just sat there like a statue.

“Okay...that’s enough” Judge Denison demanded, “I think I have everything I need to make a decision” he said tiredly, pinching the bridge of his nose. He looked at his watch, noticing that it was a little after noon, “Why don’t we take a break for lunch and met back here say...at two o’clock, I should have my decision by then” he didn’t wait for their reply, just gathered his things and made a hasty exit.

“Why can’t you just drop this” Max gritted out?

“Max” Phillip warned.

“And why won’t you just have the test done...all I want to know is the truth.”

“Okay, every lets just go to lunch and wait on the judges decision...alright?” Wade recommended.

“Fine” they all agreed. Lillian was the first one out of he room, followed closely by Jake and Mr. Gipson.

“Max, son, you have to calm down” Phillip said, “Let me handle this okay. I know this is emotionally draining...for everyone, but you have to learn to hold your tongue son.”

“I know, and I’m sorry dad” Max sighed, “I just wish this was all a bad dream you know, that when I wake up, everything will be the way it was.”

“I know Max,” his dad laid a hand on his shoulder, “Come on, I’ll treat the two of you to lunch.”

“Sure dad” they made their way out of the office. Liz felt like her bladder was about to explode.

“I’m just going to stop off in the little girls room before we leave” she whispered to her husband. Max nodded, kissing her lovingly on the forehead before watching her disappear behind the bathroom doors.

Liz thanked the gods that there wasn’t a line for the restrooms. Quickly she took care of her business. She stepped out of her stall, and looked to her right were the stall beside her opened at the same time. Lillian stood in shock as she saw Liz standing there. The two stood there awkwardly, just studying the other. Finally, Liz made her way to the sink to wash her hands. She had just about made it to the door when her name was called.

“Liz...wait...” Lillian’s desperate voice penetrated the air. Liz turned around but didn’t say anything. Clutching her purse in her hands, Lillian took a tentative step forward. “I-I just wanted to say I’m sorry about what happened a few weeks back” her tone gently and apologetic, “I was out of line, and I had no right saying those things to you. I was just frustrated and just wanted Max to hear me out and when he didn’t and I came to you...I just lashed out, and for that, I’m sorry.” Liz stared at her, seeing the sincerity in her eyes.

“Thanks” she turned intent on leaving, knowing that Max and Phillip were probably wondering what was taking her so long.

“Liz...how is she?” Liz thought a moment before answering.

“Angry...but hurt mostly” she admitted honestly seeing no reason to sugar-coat things. Lillian nodded, brushing at the single tear that had escaped.

“I-I know it’s asking a lot...and it may not mean much to her, but c-could you tell her I’m sorry...a-and I love her” Liz could only nod mutely as she made a quick exit out the door.

~~~~~~~~~~
Judge Denison sat down stiffly in his chair. He looked around at all the tense faces in the room, and sighed. “It’s been a long day, and I’m not going to prolong it any longer” he said, sliding his glasses into place, “This is definitely an usual situation...here we have a little girl that seems to have several people that love her dearly. Mr Evans, I commend you on stepping up to your responsibility at such a young age. There aren’t many man that would have done what you done at your age. I know that this must be hard for you, and I understand your refusal for a paternity test I truly do, but given the circumstances and the fact that Ms. Guerin herself has admitted to having intercourse with Mr. Paterson here prior to your relations, therefore creating the situation we have here today...” Max felt dread wash over him as he listened to the words coming out of the judges mouth. “...and going on probability, I have no choice but to rule that there be a paternity test administrated for Amber Evans, Maxwell Evans, and Jake Paterson” the air whooshed out of Max at alarming speed. He vaguely felt Liz as she rubbed his thigh soothingly, or his father’s comforting hand on his shoulder. All he felt was numb. “I have already had my assistant call for an appointment...is this Friday at one good for everybody?” When he received okays from everyone, Phillip in Max’s place, he began to pack up his things. “Mr. Evans, I pray to god everything works out for you and your family...especially Amber” he quickly said his goodbyes wishing them all a good day.
“Max?” Liz’s worried voice finally reached through his fog, and he looked around the room. He noticed that everyone in the room had left, and it was just her and him. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah...lets go home” his tone was distracted, and Liz worried about what was going on in his head.
~~~~~~~~~~

Friday

The week had seemed to go by in a blur. Max and Liz had sat down with Amber and explained what was going on, and like her daddy, had refused to go through with the test.

“I won’t take it...you can’t make me take it” she shouted at her parents.

“Amber please...” Liz began.

“No! I won’t take it” she tilted her nose stubbornly in the air. Max slid off the couch to kneel in front of her.

“Tickles...” he brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear, “I know you’re scared...so I’m I” he admitted, causing Amber to look at him in shock.

“Y-you are?”

“Um humm, but you know what?”

“What?”

“No matter what this test says, you’ll always be my daughter” as if those were the magic words she had been waiting on to right her world, Amber lunged forward into his arms and held on tightly.

So they were now sitting in the waiting room of Quest Diagnostic waiting to been seen.

“Mr. Evans” the nurse called, motioning them back. Liz had explained the procedure to them, and they were a lot calmer then they had been earlier that morning. “Just have a seat, and I’ll be right back” she smiled, showing them into a room. Max and Liz sat down with Amber between them. Neither of them said a word, just wanted to get the whole thing over with. A few minutes past, and the nurse returned carrying a tray of test tubes in her hands.

“Okay, this should only take a second” she assured, “who wants to go first?” she asked looking between the three of them. Max felt Amber’s hand tighten around his.

“I’ll go first” he volunteer.

“Okay” she grabbed a swab from the tray, “open wide,” she instructed. Max watched her intently as she swiped the inside of his cheek twice, placing each swab into its own protective tube. “There you go, all done” she smiled. Next it was Amber’s turn, and she followed her daddy’s example and allowed her to swab the inside of her cheek.

“What now” Max asked after she was finished collecting their cultures?

“Well Judge Denison has requested a rush on these, so the results should be back in 48 hours” she smiled as she labeled each tube.

“Thank you” they all said in unison before making their way out of the lab, clutching each others hand in comfort.

“So what do we do now” Amber asked, looking between her parents?

“We wait.”

Chapter 31
Monday

“Hey sweetie” Liz smiled setting down the lab report she was reading. It was early, the sun hadn’t even come up yet, but Liz found it impossible to sleep. She couldn’t find a comfortable position and even if she did, her mind continued to work overtime. The entire weekend, the three of them had cut themselves off from the rest of the world. They had spent time together watching movies...playing cards...or just simply lounging around the house. The shadow of the paternity test weighed heavily on their minds, but neither of them wanted to talk about it. But the last to nights had been hell for Liz. Although the days were occupied with spending time with Max and Amber, her nights were plague with the ever going worry of what ifs. What if Amber was Jake’s...what if he wanted to take her away from them? She had laid awake, tossing and turning over the possibilities of losing her daughter. So as not to wake Max, she had climbed out of bed and head downstairs to her lab to catch up on some work she had been neglecting the last two days.

“Hi” Amber yawned sleepily, sitting down beside her in the oversized sofa. She laid her head on Liz’s chest, and Liz instantly wrapped a protective arm around her.

“What are you doing up” she asked, brushing her hand over her disheveled blonde hair?

“Couldn’t sleep” Amber picked up the folder her mom had just been reading before sitting it back down in disinterest?

“You okay” Liz asked, still combing her fingers through her hair?

“No.”

“What’s wrong” Liz instantly becoming alarmed? She lifted her up so that she could see her face, searching.

Amber shrugs. “I don’t know...my stomach feels funny...like there’s all kind of stuff jumping around in it” she explained. Liz let out a sigh of relief before pulling her back into her arms.

“Oh sweetie, those are just your nerves” she soothed, placing a kiss on her forehead. “Are you nervous about what today might bring” she asked softly? She felt her nodded against her. “It’s okay to be nervous...or even scared for that matter...”

“Are you...scared I mean?” Liz wanted to shout hell yes she was scared, but she didn’t want to add to the anxiety Amber was already feeling.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because...I know that everything will be okay” she didn’t know who she was trying to convince more, herself or Amber.

“But how do you know...how do you know that when that test comes back that it won’t say that he isn’t my daddy” her voice was growing hysteric, and Liz rubbed her arm and held her closer to calm her down.

“I know because I have faith” she stated calmly, “Our family is just now growing, and I don’t think God would rip that away from us...not when we’ve been through so much to come together” her words seemed to do the trick, and she felt Amber relax against her.

“Okay” she whispered softly, wrapping her arm around Liz’s waist. As soon as her hand was resting on her stomach, she felt the baby kick.

“See there, even he agrees” she chuckled slightly. Amber sat up, her hand lying protectively over her little brother. Leaning her head down, she began to speak softly to him.

“Hey little man” she smiled, giving Liz’s stomach a little jiggle. She was rewarded with another small thump. She continued to carry a conversation as if she wasn’t even talking to Liz’s stomach, but as if he was sitting right there with them, and the funny thing was, he responded. Liz just sat back and listened to the one-sided conversation.

“Mom?” She finally looked up at her.

“Umm hmm”

“He doesn’t have a name yet” she frowned. Liz stared down at her, realizing she was right. Throughout everything that was going on, they hadn’t had the chance to sit down and go over baby names.

“You know? You right...would you like to help me pick a name” she smiled watching the way her face lit up.

“Could I?”

“Of course, he is your brother, and I think you should help pick out his name” Liz tapped her chin in thought. “Lets see, how about Seth” she asked? Amber frowned, shaking her head.

“Uh...no.”

“Okay...what about Caleb?”

“There’s this boy Caleb in my class, and he eats dirt” Amber stuck out her tongue in disgust.

“So that’s a no on Caleb” Liz laughed. “How about Lionel?”

“To Smallville.”

“Jasper...”

“He’ll be called Casper the Friendly Ghost...” she shot down.

“Clinton...”

“Too old...”

“Sebastian...”

“Eww...”

“I thought you were going to help” Liz huffed,

“I am helping, my brother. I don’t want him to be stuck with some goofy name that kids will make fun of” she said seriously. Liz nodded, understanding exactly what she was talking about. There were plenty of names she had been called during her elementary days. From Lizard to Fizzy Lizzy, she didn’t want her son to go through that.

“How about Maxwell? You have to like that name” she raised an eyebrow at her.

“I do...but I don’t think he would like to be called Junior. I know Uncle Michael hates it, and someone would definitely call him that” she reasoned.

“Okay, how about this, you take a few days to think about it and when you find something that would do justice by your brother, you let your daddy and me know. Okay?”

“Okay” Amber smiled. Liz looked at the clock on the table, noticing that the sun would be rising soon.

“Are you hungry?”

“Yeah.”

“How about we make your daddy breakfast in bed” she smiled in suggestion?

“Okay” the two of them made there way upstairs to prepare breakfast.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Max frowned, swiping at his ear before settling back into his sleep. A few seconds later the tickling returned, and he slapped himself in the face...hard. Giggling penetrated his mind, and he opened one sleepy eye to see his wife and daughter standing before him wearing matching ‘cat that swallowed the canary’ grins.
“Good morning sleepyhead” Liz smiled, placing a sweet kiss upon his lips.
“Umm...good morning” he smiled lazily as he sat up.
“We made you breakfast in bed” Amber beamed as she carefully brought the tray over and placed it across his lap. Liz climbed in beside him smiling brightly.
“Wow! You guys have been busy” he exclaimed looking at the abundance of food that laced the tray. There was bacon, ham, eggs, grits, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, waffles, milk and orange juice . . . way too much for one man. “Everything looks delicious, but I can’t possibly eat all this by myself” he winked, tweaking his daughters nose.
“Of course not silly” she giggled, reaching for the extra plates on the night stand. She eased her way onto the bed and settled between her parents. Max fixed her a plate, then went about preparing both Liz and himself one.
“This is great” he moaned around a spoonful of eggs. “My compliments to the chefs” he smiled.
“Thank you...we try” Liz smiled.
“So...” he began casually, “there’s a lot of food here...you must have been up for a while” he looked at her pointedly, noticing the tiredness in her eyes.
“Don’t start” she warned. Picking up a piece of mango, she shoved it into his mouth before he could protest. She giggled at his shocked face before resuming eating her food.
“I’m just making sure you’re okay” he said once he swallowed.
“I know, but you have to stop worrying before you drive us both crazy” she smiled. Seeing the way he pouted, she rolled her eyes playfully. “C’mere” she leaned over so that their lips hovered near each other. “I’m sorry...just relax, okay” she brought her lips over his, tasting the unique mixture of him and mango.
“Mmm” she moaned, loving the tingling combination. Max darted his tongue out, teasingly dipping it in and out of her sweet mouth.
“You do know I’m still sitting right here, right” Amber’s annoyed voice penetrated their cloudy minds?
“Sorry” they both blushed, pulling apart. They chuckled seeing her disgusted glare. The three of them continued to have a nice, quiet breakfast in bed, with Max and Liz occasionally stealing kisses behind Amber’s back and feeding each other.
~~~~~~~

Around ten, Michael had arrived to help Max with the nursery. They had been working on it for the last past week, and Liz didn’t even recognize her room anymore. They had already knocked down two of the walls, extended the area, added the window and Michael had even added in built in wall units. The only thing left for them to do was add the light fixtures, put in the French doors and paint. Liz watched them as they worked sided by side, complimenting each other. She sat in the oversized glider, her hands resting atop her protruding stomach. She resisted the urge to moan as she watched Max’s sweat cover body flex and contract as he lifted the heavy lumber. He had long since lost his T-shirt and was now working naked from the waist up. Her eyes traveled a bead of sweat as it slowly trekked down from his nape, between his muscular shoulders, across the small of his back before disappearing beneath the waist of his low riding khakis. She licked her lips and shifted uncomfortably in her seat. ‘Damn these pregnancy hormones’ she cursed silently. Every since she got pregnant, she’d grown unsatisfiable. All she wanted to do was run her hands over his glistening body, let him have his way with her...damn who watched.

Max looked over at his wife, and noticed her labored breathing and the way she clutched the handles of the rocking chair. He immediately grew concerned, but when she raised her eyes to meet his, he felt a jolt of heat run through him at the smoldering fire he saw in her eyes. He felt himself harden instantly and glanced cautiously over at Michael, who was too engrossed in measuring lumber to pay any attention to them. Liz squirmed under his intense gaze and licked her lips, slowly letting her tongue glide between her plump lips. Max groaned, stalking over to her. He kneeled down in front of her.

“What are you doing” he purred, his hand running sensually over her calves before trekking up to her thighs where his thumbs drew tight circles?

“Enjoying the view” she smiled, tracing a finger over his broad chest, scraping her nail over his erect nipple. “God Max, I’m so horny” she said truthfully. Max growled capturing her lips in a steamy kiss. Liz ran her hands over his slick back, feeling herself drown in his musky scent.

“Can’t the two of you at least wait until I left the room” Michael smirked, leaning against the wall? Max and Liz pulled apart, glaring at him for interrupting their moment. Max was just about to say something, when the phone rung.

“I’ll get it” Liz giggled, dancing out of Max’s reach as he tried to pull her back against him. “Hello” she smiled into the phone. Her smile quickly faded as she listened to the person on the other end. “Thank you” she said a few minutes later, her fingers clutching the phone as the person hung up.

“Liz...what’s wrong” Max and Michael were both standing protectively at her sides. She looked up at Max with worried eyes. “Liz?” Max grabbed the phone from her hand, placing it back in its cradle. He cupped her face gently between his hands. “Talk to me Love” he pleaded. Liz looked up into his worried face and felt tears sting the back of her eyes.

“T-that was Judge Denison’s office...the results came back” it was Max’s turn to grow silent as he grew pale and stumbled backwards. He sat down heavily on the edge of the bed, his heart thumping a hundred miles a minute. He felt sick...like he could throw up everything in his stomach.

“Max?” Liz squatted down in front of him the best she could. Placing her hand underneath his chin, she lifted his eyes to hers. “Everything’s going to be okay...no matter what, we’re going to get through this” she caressed his cheek tenderly. Max stared at her, wanting to take comfort in her words. “Come on...” she coaxed, pulling him to his feet, “the judge wants to see us at three” she sent Michael a look that he quickly understood.

“I’ll just go check on Amber” Liz smiled gratefully. Max followed obediently as she led him into their bathroom. Closing the door softly behind them, Liz led his dazed form over to the toilet were he mechanically sat down. She walked over to the tub and turned on the water. Glancing over her shoulder, her heart ached at his lost look. Once the water was ready, she bent down and removed his shoes and socks from his feet.

“Stand up” she spoke softly. Max did as he was told, the whole time his eyes watched her and she could see the fear embedded in them. She undid his pants, sliding them over his hips before she quickly shed her own clothes. She slid into the warm bath, holding her hand out to him. Max latched onto her hand like a lifeline before stepping into the tub and settling between her legs.

“It’s okay” she coaxed when he was reluctant to lean against her stomach. He finally relented and leaned back, not allowing all of his weight to settle on her. Neither of them said a word as Liz picked up the sponge and squeezed water over his chest. Her free hand brushing soothingly over his forehead urging him to come flush against her. She continued to run the sponge over his torso, across his shoulders and down his arms. She felt him relax against her, his eyes closing as he let out a heavy sigh.

“I’m scared” he finally admitted.

“I know” was her only reply as she washed his body. She knew that he had been trying to be strong for her and Amber, but she knew that he just as scared as the rest of them.

“W-what if the test comes back...a-and it...I can’t lose her Liz” his voice was thick with tears. Liz wrapped her arms around him, kissing his temple.

“Shh...don’t even think like that. No matter what...if we have to fight through hell and back...no ones taking her...” Max shifted, bringing her around to straddle his lap.

“I love you Liz...I don’t know what I’d do without you” he wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his head in her chest. Liz trailed her fingers through his hair, rubbing his back gently. Together, they held each other, taking strength from one another.

~~~~~~~~~~
When Max and Liz arrived at Judge Denison’s office, they were surprised to see not only his father waiting in the lobby, but his mother, Isabel and Alex, Tess and Kyle and Maria and Michael.
“What are you guys doing here” he asked, secretly relieved to have his family and friends surrounding him?
“We wanted to be here for you” Isabel smiled, pulling him into a warm embrace. Isabel squeezed her sister-in-law’s hand before pulling her into a three-way hug.
“You guys didn’t have to come...” Max said, “but I’m glad you’re here” he looked around at everyone, relaying his gratitude.
“Come on Max...Lillian and Jake are already inside” Phillip announced. Max nodded, clutching Liz’s hand in his. He took a deep breath before following behind his father. When they entered, all eyes fell on them.
“Judge Denison should be in shortly” his assistant told them. They all nodded, taking a seat at the table. Jake folded and unfolded his hands atop the table nervously. Lillian sat as if in deep thought. Liz bit nervously on her bottom lip. Her thumb traced soothingly over the inside of Max’s wrist as he continued to run his free hand over the fabric of his pants. He was no doubt trying to remove the sweat that was rapidly gathering there. Suddenly the door opened, causing all of them to jump in tension.
“Thank you for coming in” he acknowledged, taking his usual seat. He shifted through the papers in front of him, noticing how quiet the room was. So quiet you could hear a pin drop. “There you are” he announced once he found what he was looking for. “Like I said before, this is a tough situation, and very emotional...so I’m just going to get this over with because I know you all are very anxious to get this over with as well” he picked up the large yellow envelope and Max felt like his heart was trying to jump out of his chest. His knee began to bounce frantically and Phillip placed a firm hand over it. Jake wrung his hands together, and from the way his body shook, you could tell his own leg was moving rapidly under the table. Liz’s stomach hardened in a tight ball as she watched every move the Judge made. Lillian kept her head low, too afraid to hear the results, but knowing they all needed to know.
“Okay...” Judge Denison exhaled, reading over the papers, “In the case of Amber Louise Evans, we at Quest Diagnostic have concluded with a 99.9% accuracy that Maxwell Evans is the paternal parent of this child...” the air rushed out of Max. He hadn’t even realized he had been holding his breath.
“Congratulation sons” he felt his father pull him into a tight embrace. Max turned around to see Liz with tears running down her face and the hugest smile upon her lips. It didn’t take but a second before she was wrapped in his arms. Max held on tight. He buried his face in her neck and as if a dam had been opened, he cried. He cried in relief, he cried in happiness, he just simply cried. The others in the room had disappeared, giving the two of them some privacy. Liz felt him sag against her right before they sank to the floor. Liz cupped his teary face between her hands, kissing away the salty mixture before placing her lips over his.
“Is it really true...” he asked, still not believing that it was over? That their family could now move onto the happiness they so deserved.
“Yes its true baby” she brushed away his tears.
“I need to see her” he announced suddenly, standing to his feet pulling her with him. But before they could leave, the room was suddenly filled with his family, and they all pulled him into their arms. There wasn’t a dry eye around. Max found himself being suffocated by his mother’s embrace, followed quickly by Maria, Tess and Isabel.
“Congratulation...it’s a girl” Kyle teased before pulling him into a manly hug. Alex shook his hand firmly, congratulating him as well. Michael released Liz when he saw Max walking toward them. They shifted nervously in front of each other before surprisingly Michael stepped forward and pulled Max against him. Max wrapped his arms around him and neither cared what they must look like crying in another mans arms. They were brothers and would be there for each other no matter.
“Lets go get your daughter” Michael slapped him on the back and Max nodded eagerly taking Liz’s hand in his.
Amber looked up from where she and Sabrina were coloring. Max stepped into the living room and their eyes locked. Amber stared at him, his face unreadable. Suddenly a smile plastered on his face and she knew. She knew everything was okay. Max barely had time to brace himself before she came barging into him. Max caught her, holding her closely as he fought with his tears once again.
“I love you daddy” Max never thought the word ‘daddy’ could ever sound so sweet.
“I love you too, Tickles...I love you too.”
Chapter 32
Liz giggled as his fingers danced over her ticklish spot. Max lifted his head, sending her a tiny smile before continuing his exploration. He kissed the rosy nipples of her breast before his lips traveled downwards. He kissed the top of her stomach before his lips traveled even further, kissing her protruding bellybutton.
“Hey mini-me, it’s daddy” he coos to her tummy. He took a moment to say his good mornings to his son before sliding down to his destination. He pushed her thighs apart for better access. Liz shivered in anticipation, knowing what was coming. Max spread her nether lips apart with the pad of his thumbs, moaning at the beautiful picture before him.
“God you’re so beautiful...so wet” he traced a finger down the length of her and felt her shake beneath him. He brought his drenched finger to his lips and licked it clean. “So sweet” he moaned in satisfaction.
“Max...please” she squirmed, needing him to touch her...to taste her. Since she was two and a half weeks from her due date, he had been adamant about them not having sex. He was scared of hurting her or the baby even though Dr. Smith had ensured him that sexual relations were okay, he still was paranoid to make love to her. Instead he would pleasure her by other methods...with his hands and mouth. She wasn’t complaining though, because he was very skilled with both. Max didn’t hesitate to fulfill her throaty request. His tongue dipped out, tasting her creaminess before he stiffened it to a point and drove it in and out of her center. He growled in frustration when he couldn’t reach her like he wanted. Grabbing a pillow, he gripped her hips and slid it under her, setting her at just the right angle.
“Oh god” Liz moaned as his tongue continued to reek havoc on her lower body. She clawed at the sheets beneath him as first one then another of his digits invaded her core. Max used his thumb to caress her clit while he continued to probe and stroke her sensitive core. It wasn’t long before she shattered with orgasm, his name chanted over and over. Max crawled up her body, brushing aside the strands of hair matted to her forehead with sweat.
“Hi” he smiled once she finally opened her eyes.
“Hey” she smiled back lazily, bringing his head down for a kiss. “Mmm” she slid her tongue into his mouth, tasting herself upon his lips. “What time does your plane leave” she mumbled, nibbling at his jaw-line? Max jerked when her hand found his erected member.
“T-two” he hissed when she stroked his sack. His fingers combed through her hair as she flicked her talented tongue over his hardened nipple.
“Good...” she smiled mischievously, sliding off the bed bringing him to the edge. “That gives us plenty of time.” Max groaned as he watched her take him into her mouth.
“Oh god!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Liz leaned against the door, staring into their son’s nursery. They had finished a month ago, but they recently just got all the furniture in last week. Liz had wanted to make sure they got the right furniture to match the crib Max had made. Walking over to the crib, a gentle smile masked her face as her fingers traced over the chiseled train that Max had carved into the footboard. The room was painted a powder blue. Michael had painted a Lionel train theme around the room. The whole nursery was covered in train accessories right down to the engineer’s cap that rested on top of the dresser. Picking up the stuff teddy bear Isabel had insisted on buying, and she played with its soft ear.

“All that’s missing is you little guy” she laid a hand upon her stomach, stroking it lovingly. It had been close to two months now that the whole thing with Lillian and Jake and things had finally gone back to normal. They hadn’t heard from Lillian since that day at Judge Denison’s office, but they knew she was still in town. Maria says that she and Michael have lunch at least twice a week and they had actually run into her one day at the grocery store. To say the least, things had been awkward. Before everything had happened, Lillian and Amber were slowly making an amends. Their relationship was starting to grow, and Amber was willing to open herself to having her biological mother in her life. Amber doesn’t talk about her much, but Liz knows she misses her to some degree.

“You okay” Max asked coming up behind her. Liz smiled.

“Yeah, I just can’t wait to actually hold him in my arms” she admitted.

“I know what you mean” he said, reaching out to play with the bear in her hand. Liz ran her hand over the soft baby blanket hanging over the crib.

“Are you all packed” Max and Michael had a meeting in Florida for a potential project? They were going down to look at sights and review plans with the company and if all went well, the project was to take off that spring.

“Yeah...yeah, god I hate to leave you alone right now” he sighed, nuzzling her neck and cradled her stomach.

“I won’t be alone. Your mom, Isabel, Maria...they all will be here if something happens...which it won’t so stop worrying” she soothed, turning in his arms. “Besides, it’s only for two days and then you’ll be here with us.”

“I know, but it still doesn’t make leaving you easier” he pouted.

“Oh I know baby” she cooed, bringing his head down to meet hers.

“Promise me you’ll call if anything happens” he whispered against her lips, spraying his hand over her round tummy.

“I promise” they shared a longing kiss as if they wouldn’t see each other for weeks instead of just two days.

“I’m going to miss you” he rested their foreheads together. This is the first time since they were married that they would be separated and Max was very hesitant to leave her, especially since she was so close to her delivery date. If the clients they were going to meet hadn’t insisted that he be there, Max wouldn’t even be leaving her.

“Not as much as I’m going to miss you” she rested her head against his chest, sighing heavily as she closed her eyes and inhaled his scent. They stayed wrapped in each others arms before Amber’s voice pulled them apart.

“Daddy, Uncle Michael and Alex are here” she announced as she entered the nursery.

“Thanks sweetie” he brushed aside her long bangs before squatting down in front of her. “I want you to look after your mom while I’m gone, okay?”

“Of course daddy, I won’t let anything happen to her” she smiled, looking over at Liz.

“That’s my girl” he pulled her into his arms, kissing the top of her head. “Come on, you can help me take my bags down” he smiled.

“Took you long enough” Michael teased as he watched the three of them coming down the stairs. He had to cover his grin as he watched Liz waddle toward them. “How are you feeling Liz” taking the small bag from her hand?

“Huge” she laughed. Michael threw an arm around her shoulders.

“Don’t worry, it won’t be long now” he placed a kiss on her temple, rubbing her arm gently.

“Thank you Michael” she laid her head on his shoulder. She loved Michael like a brother. He was always looking out for her, always making sure she had her favorite cookies and cream ice cream in stock along with extra Oreo’s and olives. Sometimes he was worse then Max when it came to protecting her, but she couldn’t complain. She loved him dearly for it and knew one day he was going to make an excellent father.

“So two days huh?” Max said after he finally got his bags in the car.

“Yeah, two days...we can do this” she smiled.

“I love you Liz.”

“I love you too Max.” Max turned to Amber, giving her a kiss and made her promise to be good. Sinking to his knees, Max lifted Liz’s blouse exposing her belly. “Hey Mini-me...you be a good boy for mommy...a-and you stay in there until daddy gets back, okay...” Liz giggled as she listened to him, “I love you...and I’ll be back soon” he kissed her stomach before smoothing her blouse back down and standing to his feet.

“Two days” he told himself as he walked backwards toward the car. Liz wrapped an arm around Amber’s shoulders, the other hand resting on her stomach.

“We love you” they called as they stood on the porch and watched them drive off.

~~~~~~~~~~
“Eww...what are you eating” Amber scrunched up her nose as she looked in her mom’s bowl?
“What?” Liz asked innocently, looking down in her bowl. “It’s just ice cream.”
“No, it’s not...ugh...are those olives” she asked in disgust.
“Your brother happens to like olives...would you like some” she laughed as she spooned up some of the weird concoction and slid it into her mouth. Her laughter grew stronger as Amber faked gagging. Just then the doorbell rung.
“I got it” Amber quickly jumped up and ran for the door. She returned a few seconds later with Maria, Tess, Isabel, Sabrina and Tanya right behind her.
“What are you guys doing here” she asked as she struggled to get up from the sofa?
“We thought you guys could use some company” Isabel began.
“Yeah...we brought movies and pizza” Tess announced as she came in carrying plates. Liz watched them move around the living room and her eyes narrowed in suspicion,
“Max called you didn’t he” she placed her hands on her hips, daring them to lie. She got her answer when they all looked away guilty. “I knew it” she fumed. She had talked to him the night before until one in the morning and then he had called her right before his meeting just to say I love you, but never once did he mention calling his sister and friends to come and baby-sit her.
“Don’t get mad at Max, Liz” Isabel rushed in to explain, “you know my brother’s just worried about you and to ease his mind he asked us to come and just be with you.”
“Besides, we were do for a girls night,” Maria said, “I mean once the baby’s born, who knows when we will be able to do this again” they all nodded.
“Fine” she huffed, taking a seat on the sofa, accepting the pizza Tanya handed her. “Your brother best be lucky I love him so much” she spoke around a mouthful of pizza. The girls shared a laugh before settling down to watch a movie and pig out.
“Are you sure you’re going to be okay here by yourself” Isabel asked some time later as she shrugged on her coat?
“You guys, I’ll be fine. Besides I’m not alone, Amber’s here with me” she rolled her eyes at their overbearingness.
“Well, just promise that you will call if anything happens” Tess smiled, leaning over to kiss her cheek.
“Will do” she vowed. Shutting the door behind them, Liz leaned up against it with a heavy sigh. She loved her friends dearly, but sometimes they could be a little too much for her. She ran her hands over the swell of her stomach, trying to ease the tightness there.
“Are you okay” Amber asked, eyeing her worriedly?
“Yeah, sweetie, I’m fine” she smiled, pushing off the door. “Why don’t you go on up and get ready for bed, I’ll be up shortly.”
“Okay” Amber watched her hesitantly for a moment before climbing the stairs to get ready for bed. While Amber was in the shower, Liz took to cleaning up the remains of their girls night. She was going to head upstairs when she came across the breakfast and lunch dishes her and Amber had left earlier that day and decided she might as well clean them too. Amber was in her nightclothes and settled under her covers when Liz finally made it upstairs.
“Hey” Liz smiled sitting on the edge of her bed, “I just came in to say goodnight.”
“Goodnight mom” she replied leaning up and giving her a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Are you sure you’re okay” she asked, noticing the way she kept rubbing her stomach?
“Not you too” Liz chuckled.
“What?”
“Nothing, I’m fine. You just get some sleep. Your dad’s plane comes in early tomorrow.”
“Okay...I love you.”
“I love you too sweetie” hitting the lights, Liz headed to her room for a nice long bubble bath. She rubbed her back, trying to relieve the ache there. After a good hour soak, she climbed into bed waiting on Max’s call. She didn’t have to wait long because ten minutes later they were on the phone telling each other about their day. She didn’t reprimand him for sending over the babysitters, but she did plan on making him pay later. They said their good nights with the promise of seeing each other the next day. Liz fell asleep with a happy smile on her face.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Amber awoke to Pepper’s whining. Opening her sleepy eyes, she felt her pulling at her covers.

“What’s the matter girl...you want out” she yawned sleepily, climbing out of her bed? Pepper grabbed her pajama leg, pulling her roughly. “Okay...okay...you don’t have to be so bossy about it” she groaned. Pepper let go of her pants, dashing into the hall. Amber followed, but instead of going downstairs, she ran into her parents room. “What is she up to” Amber mumbled to herself? She followed her into the room, noticing the light on in the bathroom. She watched Pepper dancing impatiently at the door.

“Mom!” she shouted once she came upon the scene. Liz had woken up with extreme pressure in her bottom. At first she thought maybe she had to use the restroom, but when she got there nothing happened so she went back to bed. A few moments later the sensation returned but this time it was accompanied by a sharp pain in her lower stomach. She was now squatting against the toilet, trying to ride out another contraction.

“I-I think you b-better call your Granny...” she huffed out as she was hit again by the burning pain. “Your brother’s wanting to make an appearance” she gritted her teeth when another pain hit.

~~~~~~~~~~
Max burst through the hospital doors with urgency of a mad man, Michael hot on his heels. He had been a nervous wreck every since he was awakened out of his sleep by his daughter’s panicking voice, announcing that Liz was in labor. It had only taken him five minutes to get ready and he was racing down the hall to Michael’s room.
“Maxwell, what the hell, our plane doesn’t leave for another five hours” he had growled as he opened the door.
“Liz is in labor...we have to go NOW!” upon hearing Liz was in labor, Michael had rush around the room, gathering his things before they were both rushing to the elevators.
“Oh my god, I knew I shouldn’t have left her” Max chanted as they waited on the elevators.
“It’s going to be alright Max” Michael tried to calm him down.
“What if I don’t make it in time...I can’t miss the birth of my son” Max ran an angry hand through his hair. “Shit, what the hell is taking this thing so long” he shifted from foot to foot. Suddenly the ding sounded and the doors opened. It seemed like forever before they made it to the lobby. Michael quickly took care of their bill before meeting Max on the curb. When they finally arrived at the airport, they ran like hell to the private hangers. Michael had the hotel call and reserve a private jet for them which was ready and waiting when they got there.
“What if we don’t make it in time” Max worried as they settled in and the jet began to take off?
“Don’t worry Max, I won’t let you miss the birth of your son” Michael vowed. Max nodded, staring out the window, praying they made it in time.
“Daddy!” Amber jumped from her seat as she saw him rush through the doors. Max hugged her quickly before turning to his sister.
“Where is she” he asked frantically?
“Max!” Max turned to see his mother waving him over. “Hurry, she’s fully dilated and ready to push...she’s asking for you” Diane quickly shed her scrubs and helped him into them. “GO!” she pushed him through the doors before walking over and joining the rest of the waiting family.
“...you’re doing so good sweetie” Maria soothed, brushing the sweaty strands of hair from her friends forehead.
“Maria...I-I can’t do this...I need Max” she cried, “where’s Max...I need Max” tears slid down her cheeks at the thought that her husband wasn’t going to be there with her.
“Liz” Dr. Smith called to her, “You’re doing great hun, on the next one, I want you to push” she instructed.
“I-it hurts” she cried, feeling another contraction take over. She gripped Maria’s hand as she bore down.
“That’s it Liz...and hold it” Dr. Smith patted her leg, counting to ten, “and relax” Liz laid back exhaustively against Maria.
“Where’s Max” her voice was small and full of tears. Just then the door burst open, and Max rushed to her side.
“I’m here Love” he cooed, kissing her forehead.
“You made it” she smiled through her tears. Max placed a kiss over her lips.
“Of course, where else would I be” he smiled. Liz would have returned it if she wasn’t hit by another splitting pain.
“That’s it Love...you’re doing excellent” Maria had abandon her spot for Max, and she now stood to the side, holding her friends hand.
“It’s burning” Liz shouted as she pushed harder.
“I know baby I know” Max stroked her arms in encouragement. “God I wish I could take away your pain...I love you so much Liz...so much...thank you...thank you so much for going through this” he whispered in her ear, tears running down his own face. His words seemed to give her the extra adrenaline she needed, fore on her next contraction, the rather large body of their son was expelled from her body and she slumped over in relief as his loud wail echoed throughout the room.
“Here he is...Liz...Max...meet your son” Dr. Smith held up the squirming boy before laying him across his mother’s chest.
“Oh god Max...he’s beautiful” Liz whispered in awe as she held her son for the first time.
“Just like his mother” he kissed her temple, running a finger over his sons tiny hand.
“Hey little guy...Happy Birthday” he smiled as big doe eyes stared up at him. Maria stood to the side, snapping pictures of the new addition to the family. Max cut the umbilical cord and the nurses whisked their son away while Liz delivered the afterbirth. The nurses checked his vitals and wrapped him in a blanket and a tiny blue cap before handing him over to his proud daddy. Max could only stare at the bundle in his arms. His son. He gently swayed him in his arms, never wanting to let go.
“I can’t believe you’re finally here...” he spoke softly, “although I do specifically remember telling you to wait on daddy before you decided to make an entrance” he chuckled softly. His son gurgled, staring up at his father.
“What’s his name” Maria asked from her spot next to Liz? Liz and Max shared a look.
“We don’t know” Amber had came up with a name weeks ago, but she refused to tell them until the baby was born.
“Okay, I think we can get you guys to a private room now” one of the nurses said. Max walked over and carefully handed his son to Liz.
“Maria, would you go with Liz...there’s a waiting room full of people waiting on this little guy here” he smiled, stroking his wife’s cheek before doing the same to his son.
“Sure.”
Leaning over, he kissed his wife lovingly before exiting the room. Max entered the waiting room, and all eyes fell on him. His eyes immediately landed on his daughter. “Congratulations Big Sis” he beamed proudly. Amber rushed in his arms, hugging him tightly. Everyone began to throw questions at him left and right.
“Whoa...slow down” he laughed, throwing up his hands, “everything went fine. He’s a healthy 8lbs 12oz baby. Both he and Liz are doing fine...and we should all be able to see them soon” congratulations went around and soon Maria came out to show them to Liz’s room.
Liz looked up from her sleeping sons face when the door crept open. Max stuck his head in to make sure she was decent.
“It’s okay, come in” she smiled. Everyone filed in excitedly.
“Oh my god, he’s so tiny” Isabel gushed as she got her first glimpse of her nephew.
“He wasn’t so tiny a few minutes ago” Liz joked, thinking how she thought she was going to split in two from pushing out her ‘tiny’ son.
“My goodness Phillip...he looks just like Max when he was born” Diane raved over her grandson.
“Yeah...poor kid got your ears too” Michael teased, earning him an elbow in the stomach from Maria.
“Isn’t he precious Kyle” Tess gloated, staring longingly at the small bundle?
“Hey, don’t you be getting any ideas” he warned, seeing the want in her eyes. Tess shrugged, ignoring his statement.
“Would you like to hold your brother sweetie” Liz asked reaching out to Amber? Amber nodded eagerly. Max helped her onto the bed, and she settled next to her mom. Liz carefully handed him over to her.
“That’s it...make sure to support his head” she instructed. Amber stared down at him and was surprised when his tiny eyes opened and stared up at her.
“Hi...”she whispered, “I’m your big sister Amber” he made a cooing sound is if in recognition. The others laughed. Leaning over, she placed a kiss over his forehead.
“Happy Birthday Jeremiah.” Amber looked between his parents, hoping they liked the name she had picked.
“It’s perfect” they agreed.
“Happy Birthday Jeremiah” they all echoed.
~~~~~~~~~

“He certainly is beautiful” Max looked away from the glass to the person standing next to him. Lillian shifted nervously under his scrutinizing gaze. She turned to peer into the glass to hide her nervousness.

“Jeremiah Evans...it suits him” she stared at the tiny bundle as he stretched into a perfect bow before settling back into a peaceful sleep. She smiled wistfully, thinking of all the things she had missed with Amber at this age. The missed feedings, the missed cries, the missed sweet baby smells. She sighed heavily. Those days were gone. She had lost them the day she had left her daughter. Now she knew there was never a chance to right all the wrong she had done. Lillian felt tears prick her eyes, but managed to keep them in check.

Max watched her silently, quite sure of the thoughts running through her head at that moment. Since the whole paternity suit, his anger toward her had slowly dissipated. He hadn’t seen her since that day they ran into her at the grocery store and even then she hadn’t said much, just an awkward hi before quickly leaving the store.

“I guess you’re wondering why I’m here” she said, finally turning to him. Max had to admit, he was a little curious. “I hope you don’t mind me showing up here, but I called Michael a little earlier to say bye, and he told me that Liz had the baby and that you’ll most likely be here all day” she rushed to explain.

“You’re leaving” Max asked suddenly?

“Yeah...my plane leaves in a few hours...that’s why I needed to see you” looking around, she spotted some chairs not far from them. “Do you think we could sit down?”

“Um...sure” he followed her over to the seats were a pregnant silence falls over them. Lillian wrung her hands together as she fought with her words.

“F-first I just wanted to apologize for the way I left all those years ago...” she rushed forward when he was about to speak, “I just wanted to say thank you Max. You’ve done a beautiful job with her. I know you sacrificed a lot to raise her alone...and I know I messed up when I left” she sighed, running a shaky hand through her hair, “I also want to say that I’m sorry for the whole Jake thing. I never meant to cause so much hurt when I returned...but that seems that was all I did, and I’m sorry” reaching into her purse, she pulled out an envelope and handed it to him.

“What’s this” he asked, eyeing the envelope as if something was to jump out of it and bite him?

“For the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking...analyzing you could say...and I know that although I haven’t done right by Amber in the past...I thought I could at least do something right for her now” tears slid down her face as she continued, “I’ve been seeing a lawyer these last few weeks...”

“A-a lawyer...” Max squeaked, his heart beginning to pound in his chest.

“Don’t worry” she smiled, seeing the panic in his eyes, “It’s nothing bad,” fresh tears ran down her cheeks. “I went to see a lawyer Max because I’ve terminated my parental rights...”

“What?” he asked confused.

“I terminated all my rights to Amber...I thought it’s the best thing for her. Those...” she pointed to the envelope in his hand, “...are adoption papers...for Liz. All she has to do is sign on the doted line and make official what is already true...she’s Amber’s mother” she smiled sadly, her throat working diligently to keep the tears under control.

“I...I...don’t know what to say...” he stumbled in shock.

“You don’t have to say anything...like I said before, I just want her to be happy...and I see that she is with you and Liz...I can respect that...there’s also papers for a savings account I had set up in her name...of course she won’t be able to touch it until she’s eighteen...but it’ll be there when she’s ready.”

“Are you sure about this” he didn’t know what else to say?

“Yes...I’ll be returning to London this evening and after that...who knows” she shrugged, “All I do know is that Amber’s happy here with you and Liz and I had no right to disrupt that and I’m sorry” she stood up, gathering her purse in hand.

“Take care of yourself Max...and that beautiful little boy” she had stopped fighting her tears, and let then fall unattended, “c-could you tell Liz I’m sorry...and congratulations.”

“What about Amber?” He asked sadly. Lillian managed a wistful smile.

“J-just let her know that I love her...a-and I’m sorry I was never there for her...but I did love her even though my actions may not have shown it” she was sobbing fully now. Suddenly she felt arms wrap around her and she heard Max coo softly as he rubbed her back. “M-max...d-do you think I c-could get a picture or two every once in awhile” she cried against his chest.

“Of course” he soothed, stroking her back.

“I better go” she finally said, pulling away from him. Max nodded brushing away her tears. She smiled in thanks.

“You take care of yourself too Lil” he smiled.

“I will” they shared a silent moment before she began to walk toward the door.

“You were just going to leave” Amber’s voice suddenly sounded in the hallway. She had come down to be with her daddy and see her brother and had stumbled upon them. She knew it was wrong to eavesdrop, but she couldn’t help it...now she wished she hadn’t. Lillian stood frozen. “You were just going to leave without saying anything to me” her lower lip quivered as she raised tear filled eyes to her, “Is it that easy for you to abandon me...to leave me...you were going to just leave without saying bye or anything...do I mean that little to you” she cried.

“No...God no” Lillian shook her head, sinking to her knees in front of her. She wanted so badly to wrap her in her arms. “I thought this is what you wanted...to be with your dad and Liz and me out of your life...I know I screwed up and I’m just trying to make it right...you mean everything to me...”

“Yet you can just walk away from me so easily” she whispered.

“Amber, I don’t know what you want from me...tell me...tell me what to do, because I’m trying...I’m trying so hard to do right by you and I’m failing miserably...I don’t want to cause you anymore hurt” she cried desperately. They stared at each other for what seemed like forever as Max stood to the side. Suddenly Amber did something that shocked them...she hugged her.

“Will I ever see you again” she mumbled against her neck?

“If you want...It will totally be up to you... but I won’t disrupt your life again” she whispered, holding on tightly to her daughter “just remember that I love you... and if you ever need me...I’ll be there...okay” Amber nodded, feeling her own arms tighten around her mother’s neck. Lillian held on just a little longer, relishing in the feel of having her daughter in her arms for the first and last time.

“You be good...and watch out for that baby brother of yours” Lillian smiled once she finally pulled back.

“Okay” Amber’s voice trembled with tears as she stared at the woman that had given birth to her, “I-I didn’t mean those things I said...I don’t hate you...” she lowered her eyes shamefully.

“I know baby...and I understand,” cupping her face, Lillian brought her face up to look at her, “I love you” she mumbled against her forehead as she placed a longing kiss there. She inhaled sharply as her tears landed in her daughter’s blonde locks.

“I better go” she stood up, clamping her hands over her mouth to stifle her sobs, “Bye Amber.”

“Bye” she returned sadly. Max stood behind Amber, placing comforting hands on her shoulder as they watched Lillian leave through the doors.

“You okay” Max asked after awhile?

Amber actually smiled as she stared at the door, “Yeah...I am now.”

~~~~~~~
“God, I can’t believe he’s actually here” Liz whispered as she leaned over the crib where her son rested.
“I know” Max smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist. It was their first night back home. Liz’s parents had arrived that afternoon, and of course the whole house had been filled with family and friends trying to get a glimpse of the new arrival.
“He’s so beautiful” she ran a finger over his tiny fist marveling at the fact that he was actually hers. Turning in her husbands arms, she stared up at him. “Thank you Max...thank you” she sighed laying her head on his chest.
“I think I should be the one thanking you” he cradled her neck tenderly, “for loving me...for loving Amber...for our son...you’re amazing Liz, and I’m thankful every day that you’re in my life” he kissed her forehead before lowering his lips to hers. Liz clung to him closing her eyes to hold in her tears. She never thought that when she brought a house three years ago...she would find her heart...her soul...her home.
