Happy birthday, Xan, I heard my father say. I glanced at him and, at the same moment, I felt a warm feeling flood me, as if he was trying to express something that he could not put into words. It didn’t really feel like my birthday- not quite, anyway. But it was- on this planet. Funny, spending my eighteenth birthday in a completely new place.
I smiled as he led Sarah to the dance floor- after this, I would have to do the same. I'd promised my little sister a dance and she was going to get it. But for now, she was Dad’s.
Then I noticed Kyria approach Xadalyn. For a moment, Xadalyn glanced at me. But neither of us did anything- no one could know. Not now. Not yet.
Would anyone else ever know? What was the ultimate plan, the big picture?
Well, better to leave that for later. I stood around for a while, until Dad and Sarah were done. I walked casually towards them, just when Dad was asking Mom, "Are you hungry, too, or shall we take a little walk around?"
I caught his eye for a while, replying his earlier message, Strange way to celebrate my birthday, but thanks, Dad. Thank you.
I turned to Justin. “I’m starving- I could eat a horse,” I said, scanning my eyes over the food. “Nope, no horse. You’ve eaten, right, Justin? You tell me- what do you think is good?”

Alexander asks me what food is good and suddenly I feel like an expert. I don't know much about this world, but I have at least figured out the buffet table. That's something, right?
"Well, it's all really spicy, but I guess you've always liked it that way haven't you, Xan?" I ask, with a shrug. "These meat things in the orange sauce are good, but it doesn't taste any thing like oranges -- more like pineapple but hot. Really strange, but good."
Turning, I point out another dish that I liked. "And those are good too. Some kind of meat in a pastry -- like a dumpling. Next to them are dumpling-things with a red vegetable inside. At least, I think it's a vegetable. It's spicy and sweet."
While I'm explaining it all to Alexander and Sarah, I can't help but keep glancing at Sarah. She's only a year older than me but she looks so grown up in that dress. It makes me feel strange whenever I see her. She's so different here....
"And all those pastries over there are great. Except for the ones with the purple glaze -- they taste like coconut," I explain, making a face. I hate coconut. I don't know what Xan or Sarah think of it.

"Why don't you go eat? Justin should be able to point you to the stuff that's most like home. I think he's tried all of it," my dad said with laugh and I smile at him. As he and my mom left the buffet table.
My brother join us, and that’s when Justin start explaining the strange foods "These meat things in the orange sauce are good, but it doesn't taste any thing like oranges -- more like pineapple but hot. Really strange, but good. And those are good too. Some kind of meat in a pastry -- like a dumpling. Next to them are dumpling-things with a red vegetable inside. At least, I think it's a vegetable. I look at each one of them, but the one Justin said taste coconut I didn’t look at them twice .I hate coconut, it always taste like something like clue. Well to me it does, I don’t know with Xan how it tastes to him.
I pick up the one that Justin said it was some kind meat, and indeed they were spicy, but it was very good. I had 3 of them and then I was full. I was always a light eater.
When I was baby, mom told me that I would drink some of my milk, but never finish it. I guess it was the way I was. "Xan you can eat the coconut if want, you know how much I hate them"
I look at them time, and the night was almost over. I wonder what’s going happened tomorrow.

I smile as Xan approaches. He looks so straight and tall in those clothes. He looks strong, in control and calm. He doesn't look like this is the first time he's ever been to an event like this. Or at least, not to me.
*Strange way to celebrate my birthday, but thanks, Dad. Thank you.* Xan says silently. I'm so proud of him. I hope he knows it.
"It looks like you're having a nice time, Alexander. I'm glad," I tell him, aloud. "Thank you for the dance, Sarah."
Liz assents to walk with me, having had a small plate of food with Justin while I danced with Sarah. We walk together as I show her around the great hall. "Maybe I could wash up, first?" Liz asks, indicating her sticky fingers.
I nod, feeling a bit chagrinned as I walk with her to the nearest washroom. I stand out side, admiring the murals and trying to remember the stories behind them. I turn and look out over the dance floor as the many noblemen and noblewomen wander around. Which ones were my friends in that former life? Which ones weren't? I don't know why the faces seem to be the least familiar part of this place.
"The queen certainly does look lovely tonight," I hear a female voice to the left. I turn, wondering who it is. The style of clothing on her companion looks familar -- rather similiar to what Khivar was wearing only much more elaborate.
"I do hope she enjoys herself," says the woman's companion. He looks around briefly, seeming to check for unfriendly ears. Not recognising me, he continues in a low voice. "I don't believe she'll be celebrating her next birthday."
"It would be quite hard to do," the woman agrees, "If she is dead."

"Well, it's all really spicy, but I guess you've always liked it that way haven't you, Xan?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess," I said, though I had an inkling that he hadn't heard me.

It surprised me, how fast his mouth could go when it came to food.
"And all those pastries over there are great. Except for the ones with the purple glaze -- they taste like coconut."
"Looks like you've tried everything on the table," I teased Justin, ruffling his hair as I tried to decide what to have.
I noticed Sarah grabbing the meat things to eat- at least she wasn't starving herself. I was kind of worried that she was leaning towards the anorexic side, but nah, she was fine. Just, she was a girl. "Xan you can eat the coconut if want, you know how much I hate them" she said.
One thing I could never understand was why I was the only one in the family who seemed to like coconut. I mean, really like it. What was so bad about it?
I grinned, reaching for the purple-glazed pastry thing. I turned it over, examining it for a while before taking a bite. "Aww come on, it's really good!" I said, licking my fingers. "You're just picky, Sarah."
The dumplings tasted pretty good too. But at the same time, I sort of missed Mom's home-cooked meals. Nothing came close.
As my stomach filled, I began to realise that I was actually getting tired. Maybe it was because of the hike with Kyria. And perhaps I hadn't fully recovered from last night . . . the strange, strange events of last night.
Still, what was that rule about eating at least two hours before bedtime?
"Hey Sarah." I decided I'd better end the night early. "Care to dance and burn some of these calories?"

"Hey Sarah........Care to dance and burn some of these calories?" I laugh. And follow Xan to the dance floor. He does look older to me. As we come together and dance to music, I look at him. "Happy birthday dear brother." I said to him, he's 17 and now as a adult. I remember yesterday when I was trying to get throught to him, and that Xada try killing me because of Xan. I'm kinda glad she did that, now I know she does care about him.
The dance end and I kiss his cheek."Happy birthday!"I walk back to Justin."Have fun Justin I'm going to look around the castle, dont let my mom and dad know...."
I walk off and into the hall way.....

The words of this stranger bring fear to my heart. I know that Xadalyn's a target. She's been one all her life and the events of the last 48 hours clearly demonstrate that it's still true. Khivar nearly killed her yesterday. There's no reason to think she's safe from all harm just because he's gone. Dom knew that.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen Dom around tonight. I wonder where he's been.
Still, this conversation seems like they're talking about more than just a ever-present threat. It sounds like they may know something very specific. "Indeed," says the man. I miss some of what he says next because of another conversation nearby that becomes louder, but then I hear, "She'll never take the throne."
I move a little closer to the two of them.

"Happy birthday dear brother," Sarah said affectionately as we began to dance. I smiled in return. Dear brother- she only called me that when she was feeling really close to me . . . or when she was being sarcastic.
Everyone had been wishing me a happy birthday as if it was completely normal, when in fact, I wasn't used to it. In my head, my birthday was in a couple of weeks- plenty of time. Talk about time zones.
Sarah and I danced in silence, whatever we wished to tell each other was done without the need for words. I held my little sister rather protectively, realising that both of us had grown up- we weren't little kids calling each other names and chasing after each other anymore.
When the dance came to an end, Sarah gave me a quick peck on the cheek, saying again, "Happy birthday!"
I thought we were going to have a seat and talk for a while or something, but instead, she hurried back to Justin, said something to him, and went off in a flash.
Well, it was just as well- I didn't really feel like hanging around anyway. If someone had handed me a pillow at that very moment, I would have gone to sleep then and there.
By the time I reached Justin, Sarah had disappeared from the hall. I was tempted to go back to our quarters and rest, but the part of me that was Sarah's big brother told me to make sure that Sarah was going to be all right on her own.
"What was that all about? Where is she off to in such a hurry?" I asked Justin.

I walk down the hall way and pass my parents room, xan's and justin and my room. I stop at one room where Xada is need. I knock and the maide answer it."May I please talk to the queen., alone?"
The maide let me in and I look at Xada. I am kinda nerves this is the first time I'm actually going to talk to her."Um Hi.....I was wondering if we can talk?"

I sneak out quietly into the hallway and head back to my room for a few minutes of peace and quiet before I have to go back to the party. I sit down on a couch in my sitting area but before long there is a knock at the door. ."May I please talk to the queen., alone?" I hear Sarah’s voice and the maid looks back at me for permission before letting her in.
"Um Hi.....I was wondering if we can talk?" she asks when the maid disappears. Sarah doesn’t look that much younger than me but I feel light-years older than her. Perhaps its just because we were raised differently. I was raised to rule a planet and she, well, I don’t really know how she was raised.
“I suppose, what is it you want to talk about?” I say keeping my voice completely neutral. I really have no clue what to say to this girl. It seams we have absolutely nothing in common besides the fact we share a parent. One that she’s had all her life while I’ve been an supposed orphan. I wonder if she has any clue how lucky she is.
