Hi Everyone! Thank you for the wonderful feedack and I hope you all had a great Christmas. This chapter is a little short but there should be a lot more going on in the next. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!!!
Chapter 37
“How was counseling” Liz inquired as Isabel walked through her bedroom door. Beside her, both Maria and Tess looked up from their fashion magazines, each curious as Isabel flopped back against Liz’s mattress. Almost instantly, she leapt up and moved to the floor. “Um… huh?” she asked, confused by her friend’s behavior.
“You and Max are like bunnies” Isabel stated as though it should have been obvious. “The last thing I want is to lie down on bed where the two of you… you know” she explained while a look of comprehension and then amusement crossed Liz features.
“Well you aren’t exactly safe on the floor either of that’s what you were going for” she informed and couldn’t hold in a laugh as Isabel grimaced and rolled her eyes.
“Anyway, enough about Liz’s sex life” Tess intervened and shot Isabel an expectant look. “Howwas counseling today?” she asked, repeating Liz’s previous inquiry. The three girls then watched as Isabel shrugged slightly and began picking at carpet lint.
“Okay, I guess” Isabel replied though the look each girl gave her was a clear indicator that she would have to elaborate further. “It’s still pretty hard, you know? I mean… I know I wasn’t pregnant for very long but it was so easy to get attached to the idea of being a mom… of having… having a little girl, or boy. I guess I still feel a little empty now” she explained, unconsciously lowering her hand to her flat stomach. “Alex is great though. He’s so supportive and… and just really great.”
Tess, Liz and Maria all nodded and only listened as Isabel added a few words here and there. They all desperately wanted to help but knew that there wasn’t much they could do besides giving their undivided support. None of them knew exactly what Isabel was going through, leaving only Alex and Max to truly understand her feelings. Still, they remained optimistic and hoped that Isabel and Alex’s regular counseling sessions would help speed up the healing process.
“God, I feel like such a horrible girlfriend” Isabel added with a small, self deprecating laugh. “I love Alex. I love to be hugged and kissed by him but I just can’t… I don’t want to have sex with him” she admitted as several small, crystalline tears fell from her eyes. “I’m scared of getting pregnant again because I’m scared of losing another child.” The confession wasn’t one that surprised her friends. They believed that it was only natural to still be scared and shaken up from the miscarriage.
Without hesitation, Liz slipped off the mattress and knelt down beside Isabel. Tightly, she wrapped her arms around the blonde and gently rocked her as she cried. Tess was next, followed by Maria.
If asked, none would have been able to tell how long the four sat together, locked in an embrace of friendship. The four girls might have only been sisters in a sorority but in their hearts, they were more than just friends. They were sisters and they would stand by one another throughout any and everything. Isabel was the one that needed them then and for as long as she did, Liz and Tess and Maria would continue to offer their support.

“Alright ladies, Greek Week will begin in eight days and as the head of the council, we have to organize the winner’s ceremony” Vicky informed as she paced in front of the Deltas. “Liz, as the reigning queen and king, you and Kyle will have to coronate this year’s winners” she added as an afterthought. “She and I will be stuck in meetings at the closing of each day so that means entertainment will be handled by Isabel and Maria. Get a team of three and figure out what you want to do. Serena, along with a team of four, will take care of decorations. Tess can figure out seating and Courtney and Darcy will arrange the food.”
Each female nodded and jotted down whatever notes Vicky had. “Don’t forget to consult our treasury before making any decisions and I want to see a copy of all receipts two days before Greek Week begins” Vicky informed and after a few other instructions, dismissed the group.
“So what are we doing this year?” Tess asked as she studied the event sign up sheet.
“Volleyball” Isabel and Maria both chorused while Liz scrunched up her nose and chose the Greek triathlon. “Honey, how someone your size manages to throw five javelins, run a mile and then swim four laps is beyond me” Maria stated, shaking her head in disbelief.
“I don’t know… I’ve always had a lot of stamina” Liz shrugged while Tess, who smirked mischievously, added that Max probably had something to do with that. All three laughed as Isabel blanched mockingly and covered her ears. “Anyway… I have a title to defend and I have stepped into a pool in months so I guess that means I have some training to do” she added while Tess searched for a competition for herself.
“Why don’t you try the co-ed flag football game?” Isabel suggested as she signed herself for that one as well. “I can teach you a few things and I’m sure Kyle would be a big help.”
“I guess I could try it” Tess agreed and added her name to the space below Isabel’s. “Hey, when is Vicky handing out the cast list for the entertainment competition?” she then asked when she realized that entire area was still blank.
“Tomorrow, I think” Maria replied. “It’s supposed to be some sort of parody or something like that. The whole boys play girls and girls play boys thing” she shrugged as the four recalled their previous performance. “Do you remember when Sean kept tripping in rehearsal and knocked down the entire set?” she laughed at her cousin as an image of Sean, covered in wet pain, filled their minds. “I swear that I thought we were totally going to blow it.”
“Urg, and then I almost slugged Grant when he tried to grab my ass during the dance routine” Isabel remembered, grimacing slightly. “That guy is such a sleaze. I don’t understand why any girl would ever want to go out with him.”
“Tell that to all the girls he’s boned this semester” Maria crudely replied.
“Well, I have to get going. Kyle and I have a date tonight so…” Tess interrupted and left the sign up sheet with Liz. “And I have a quiz to study for” Liz added, handing the sheet to Isabel. “Counseling” she stated and placed it in Maria’s lap.
“Now what else do I want to do?” Maria asked herself as she continued to study the list.

Middle of the night and it’s getting so hard to breathe
You can’t sleep, can’t think, can’t hardly dream
Do you fear what the world wants you to be?
Open your eyes and just see what the world is
Open your mind and you’re free
“What’s wrong?” Max asked from where he stood in her doorway. Liz had been so lost in her thoughts that she hadn’t even heard him walk up and offered him a small smile.
“I was just doing some thinking” Liz replied and reached onto her nightstand to lower the volume on the radio. Wordlessly, she watched as Max shut the door and took a seat beside her on the mattress. He was dressed in slacks and a nice sweater, causing Liz to remember he had had a late class that night. “How was Poli-Sci?” she queried, trying to act aloof as he studied her, appraisingly.
“Good. Same as usual” Max answered and gently ran his fingers through her hair. “What’s going with you?” he asked while Liz realized that it was useless to pretend she was okay. Max always seemed to know when something was wrong, when she needed him.
“I had a bio quiz yesterday and it was more of a review than an actual test but… but then I started thinking about how close we’re getting to graduation” Liz said, and bit her lips as another wave of sadness assaulted her. “I know that you want to go to either Columbia or Georgetown and I know that I said I wanted to go to Harvard but it wouldn’t be so bad if you know… I decided on New York or Washington instead. I mean, an education is an education right? As long as I go, it doesn’t matter where I’m going” she babbled and hoped he wouldn’t turn her down.
After thinking long and hard about it, Liz decided that she would willingly give up her shot at Harvard if it meant staying with Max. She just hoped he wouldn’t say that maybe they should take the time apart to figure things out.
There’s more in this world than we see
Just leave these illusions behind and run with me
If all of the things that you thought you would be
Pass you be
We’ll find what we need in our lives
We’ll find what we need in our lives
“Liz” Max murmured and pulled her close so that she was cradled in his lap. Tenderly, he pressed a kiss to her lips and pushed the stray strands of hair away from her face. “Professor Topolsky is a Harvard alumni and she pulled a few strings to get my application admitted late. I got in, Liz. I’m going to Harvard” he stated while shock and relief spread through Liz like wildfire.
“You picked Harvard?” she asked, almost to herself as a wide smile crossed her lips. “Oh my god! You picked Harvard” she repeated and threw her arms around his neck.
Laughing, Max tightened his embrace around her smaller frame and closed his eyes, savoring the moment. “I was willing to give up anything for you and I would have been glad to do it but knowing that you were willing to do the exact same thing for me… it means more to me than you know” he admitted as she peppered his skin with a thousand little kisses. “I love you so much, Liz” he murmured and plundered her mouth with a deep, longing kiss. “I love you so much.”
I spent a lifetime hoping it would come to me
Getting lost in the lies I believed
We’re covered by a mask that we think is our sin
But never realized that the truth is within
Open your eyes and just see what the world is
Open your mind and you’re free
“And I love you” Liz declared and laughed as they fell back against the mattress.

“I don’t care about any of that. I didn’t ask you out because I wanted to get into your pants, I asked you out because I couldn’t resist your smile” Alex admitted and placed a chaste kiss against her lips. “I love how caring and compassionate you are. I love the way you make me feel. I love you Isabel Evans and if we have to wait a little longer, then we’ll wait a little longer.”
Smiling through her tears, Isabel leaned against Alex and let the safety of his arms envelope her.
One of her biggest fears had been that Alex would get tired of her fear. She knew that he was a wonderful person but she also figured it was human nature to want to do more than just kiss and hug. Isabel should have known that Alex cared about more than that, he cared about her. “I got really lucky when you asked me out, you know that?”
“The way I look at it, I was the lucky one because you said yes” Alex whispered and continued to hold her close. Isabel knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. They still had a lot of things to deal with but for the first time since the miscarriage, she was completely confident that they’d get through it together. She also knew, then and there, that no matter what, she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Alex Whitman.
